Rausch told police that he had dropped a friend off at the hotel.

Police told him that he was being issued a warning for traffic violation and

asked if he had any narcotics. Rausch said that there was an open needle with heroin under one of the seats.

Police did find a bag with heroin residue and a needle. Rausch was arrested without incident for possession of heroin.

When they stopped the driver, 38-year-old Matthew Cutbill from Atlanta, Cutbill would not lower the window more than two inches, nor would he step out of the car despite multiple warnings.

An officer eventually pulled Cutbill out of the car and handcuffed him.

While searching him, police found schedule II drugs on him and used syringes.

When they ran Cutbill’s information through their system, they found that Cutbill had a warrant out for his arrest from Gwinnett County. He also did not have a driver’s license.

Can Astigmatism be Corrected at the Same Time as Cataract Surgery?

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye, or the lens inside the eye have different amounts of focusing power vertically and horizontally. Ideally, the cornea is sphere shaped, like a baseball, and images are focused on a single spot resulting in clear vision. If the cornea has an oblong shape, like a football, images are focused on 2 different spots resulting in blurry vision.

How does cataract surgery affect astigmatism?

When a cataract, the natural human lens that has gotten cloudy, is removed during cataract surgery and replaced with a clear artificial lens, all of the astigmatism arising from the lens is also removed. The astigmatism that remains is caused by the oblong shape of the cornea.

If patients have significant untreated astigmatism after cataract surgery, the uncorrected vision is blurry, and the patient will require glasses to correct the astigmatism and get clear vision.

How can astigmatism be corrected at the time of cataract surgery?

Fortunately, there are now options available to surgically correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. The process starts by measuring the amount and location of astigmatism in the cornea during the cataract evaluation. Often this is performed with more than one device to improve accuracy. The most reliable way to correct moderate or high astigmatism during cataract is with a special “toric intraocular lens” that corrects astigmatism inside the eye. The amount of astigmatism to be corrected is calculated using the preoperative measurements. The artificial lens is orientated during surgery to line up with the steepest part of the cornea, so that it cancels out the astigmatism of the cornea and results in clear vision. Patients corrected for the distance will still require reading glasses for near vision. For some patients, correcting one eye for closer vision is a way to reduce dependence on reading glasses as well. Your eye doctor can help you determine if this would be a good choice for you.

Another method for correcting lower amounts of astigmatism during cataract surgery is by “limbal relaxing incisions.” In this procedure, arc shaped incisions are created in the peripheral cornea which relax (or flatten) the steepest part of the cornea. This results in a cornea that is more sphere shaped, correcting astigmatism. There are different methods for creating these incisions. One method that works well is using a diamond knife. A more recent innovation involves using a laser to create these incisions, which results in greater precision. Limbal relaxing incisions are good at reducing low amounts of astigmatism, but toric intraocular lens are better at reducing higher amounts of astigmatism. Some patients may have so much astigmatism that they required both methods.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta City Council had its second look Monday at Alpharetta’s proposed $130 million 2018 budget.

The overall spending package represents an 8 percent increase over the current budget, thanks in large part to additional revenue from the recently enacted transportation sales tax.

Budget and Procurement Manager Shawn Mitchell told the council Monday that projections for this year anticipate an overall increase in the city’s property values of about 3 percent. However, he said, the official appraisal numbers from Fulton County will not come out until Friday.

He said those numbers could carry a surprise.

There has been some word, he said, that the Fulton County Assessor’s Office has been updating appraisals on residential property this year, and this could mean an increase in property values over what the city had anticipated. Right now, he said, the city has estimated residential property values only slightly higher than last year.

If values do come in higher, it could mean increased revenue for the city – and that added revenue could

come in handy.

Already, the city is feeling the pinch of rising costs, particularly in the area of construction costs for capital projects.

Mitchell pointed out that two projects already underway – construction of the Wills Park pool and at the Alpharetta Arts Center – are seeing cost overruns totaling more than $1.5 million combined. Both projects are being funded through a special bond passed by voters in May 2016.

Even the city’s proposed dual parking deck project, originally estimated at $8 million, is showing signs of future cost overruns that may total more than 20 percent, he said.

The city will conduct three more public meetings to discuss the 2018 budget beginning in June.

In other action Monday, the City Council: • Delayed a vote on a request

by TPA/Fuqua Development for a mixed-use project on the west side of Haynes Bridge Road south of Lakeview Parkway. The request is to allow 320 apartments, 167 town homes, 55,500 square feet of retail/restaurant, 664,400 square feet of office and a 200-room hotel. The item was tabled April 17 and is expected to be considered at the May 22 City Council meeting.

Voter registration cuts off May 21 Fulton County announces early voting locations FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The final runoff race between candidates Jon Ossoff and Karen Handel for the 6th Congressional District seat is fast approaching, but there’s still time to register to vote.

Anyone who wants to cast their ballot in the June 20 runoff but hasn’t registered yet can now do so until May 21, thanks to an order by U.S. District Judge Timothy Batten.

Wood’s term limits challenged in court Roswell resident says mayor’s fifth term violates City Charter

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — It may be next month before Jere Wood’s remaining tenure as Roswell mayor will be settled in court.

Wood appeared in Fulton County Superior May 8 to face a lawsuit alleging that he is illegally exceeding his term limits as mayor as set forth in the 2010 amended City Charter.

The lawsuit was launched against Wood by Roswell resident Michael Litten, who said he plans to run for mayor this fall.

Litten pointed to a section in the City Charter that limited the mayor to no more than three consecutive terms for a total of 12 years.

Chapter 3, Section 50 of the charter states, “No person who has been elected to three or more four-year terms of office as mayor shall be eligible for election to the office of mayor.”

Wood was first elected as mayor of Roswell in 1997 and was most recently reelected in 2013 for his fifth consecutive term. This is his 20th year serving as mayor.

Wood, however, testified at the court session that the 2010 change did not apply to terms served before the law went into effect.

“My understanding, — and I believe the council was clear — was that I could serve an additional three terms after the term that I was serving,” Wood said.

According to Wood and Roswell City Attorney David Davidson, the 2010 charter was not retroactive. They argued that the term limits didn’t take effect until Wood’s term ended in 2012.

“The lack of unanimity is the result of some delegation members wishing to allow the ongoing litigation to be decided without legislative interference.”

Litten said he first filed the suit January 2016 because Wood had “betrayed” his campaign promise for term limits after running against 30-year incumbent mayor William “Pug” Mabry.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Craig Schwall has told both sides to submit their arguments to him by June 15, after which he would rule on the issue.

The 2017 race for the mayor’s seat is set for Nov. 7 during Roswell’s general election.

By HATCHER HURD Hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. – The Fulton County Public Works Department broke ground May 5 at the Little River Water Reclamation Facility to expand its sewer capacity from 1million gallons per day (mgd) to 2.6 mgd.

The expansion will not only end the sewer tap moratorium in its coverage area but allow for new economic growth in western Roswell, Mountain Park and western Milton along Arnold Mill Road.

It is the first step in a plan to overhaul of the county’s water and sewer system that will include: • Boosting Big Creek Wastewater Reclamation Facility’s capacity by more than double to 38 mgd • Building a diversion line from Big Creek to RL Sutton Wastewater Reclamation Facility in Cobb County • Laying water reuse piping from the Johns Creek Environmental Campus to replace the reuse water lost with the closing of Cauley Creek WRF The current base rate of $8.41 per 1,000 gallons of water will be increased 5 percent in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The rates will be re-evaluated at the end of three years to see if further

assessments are necessary, said Fulton Deputy Director for Technical Services Ray Wooten.

No rate changes will go into effect before Oct. 1.

The nine-year capital improvement plan budgeted at $523,516,000 includes: • $42 million for water system improvements • $278 million for wastewater treatment plant expansions • $56.85 million for wastewater collection systems improvements • $145.7 million for water and wastewater relocations and repairs At the Little River WRF groundbreaking, Fulton County Post 1 Commissioner Bob Ellis said Little River’s expansion is a major economic step forward for the western area of North Fulton and the first step in a major overhaul of the Atlanta-Fulton County Water System.

“This upgrade and expansion is absolutely necessary to accommodate the growth in this portion of North Fulton County,” said Ellis speaking at the ground-breaking. “Upgrading the Little River plant will allow us to continue to provide residents with the world-class water and sewer services that they expect now and well into the future.”

Ellis also acknowledged that the upgrades for Little River were a long time in coming.

Dan Pile lives, breathes the YMCA credo We had a farewell party last week for Dan Pile, Atlanta YMCA senior vice president of operations. There were a lot of people there because he has a lot of friends. I don’t think Dan ever met HATCHER HURD anyone who wasn’t Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com soon his friend.

I first met Dan Pile somewhere around a quartercentury ago. I received a press release (no emails in those days) about YMCA activities offered in the community.

I decided it would be a good idea to meet this guy, because when you are new to a newsbeat, you want to meet the people who know people. Meeting Dan Pile turned out to be a good move on many levels.

Yes, Dan knows a lot of people. He’s a people type of guy. Second, he was coordinating YMCA activities in North Fulton in a most unique way.

I asked if I could come to see him, and he said sure. But I didn’t find him at the YMCA. No, he had an office in one of those office row houses. There was no gym, no pool, no locker room.

There was no YMCA building at all in North Fulton then.

Dan was offering Y programs mostly partnering with schools for space. He had the YMCA involved with kids and their parents through the schools without a physical YMCA presence.

But Dan knows the YMCA spirit is in its people, not buildings. As it turned out, what Dan Pile had secured was a beachhead in North Fulton.

And just like the U.S. Marines, once on the beach it is just a matter of time.

I won’t say it was a straight line from that little office to the Ed Isakson/ Alpharetta YMCA, but it was mission accomplished.

I used to think Dan had a bad knee because he would began conversation with you and the next thing you know he’s got his arm around your neck talking to you like you are his closest friend.

I just figured his knee bothers him from time to time but he doesn’t want to break the moment so he holds on for a little support.

And suddenly you know you are going to do something you had no idea of before, but now it seems like the best thing you could be doing. That is known as his Pile Driver technique.

He pulls you close, talks to you as if you are the most important person in the world. He shares an idea that may seem unattainable now but yet is within grasp if we but try.

After talking to many of his friends, I have discovered that is a common

In fact, the only time he can stand without an arm around someone’s neck is when he is standing in a freezing river holding onto only his favorite bamboo fly rod – usually in some far-off place that ends in a vowel: Montana, Colorado, Alaska, South Dakota.

Notice how inaccessible most of these places are. But Dan goes where the fishing is not only good but a challenge.

He is happiest in the middle of a cold stream, holding his bamboo rod.

And when he is ready, he just flicks his wrist, floating the lure just so … and BAM, he’s hooked another salmon.

And once he puts his arm around you and pulls you close, he is going to share something special with you. I don’t know how it will start out, but it will end in the letters YMCA. And you are hooked too. Just like one of his salmon.

Dan is good at getting people hooked – hooked on helping other people.

Oh rare Dan Pile, we will miss you.

But remember, Georgia ends in a vowel also.

Authoritarian governments are free from tough questions The last time I wrote something for our newspapers it HANS APPEN was for an interview General Manager hans@appenmediagroup.com we had with the last editor in chief of Turkey’s largest daily newspaper before the government took it over and shut it down.

He is now living in exile in the United States.

In fact, his newspaper was one of more than 160 media organizations that were shut down or taken over by the Erdogan government, which has jailed hundreds of journalists, lawyers and judges throughout his rise to power.

What was the only Muslim secular democracy in NATO, a long-time ally of the United States, Turkey is now joining the ranks of authoritarian governments.

During our interview, I asked him if something like that — a slow erosion of democracy — were ever to happen in the United States, how would we know it is happening? What are the signs?

His answer? First, they would start

by jailing journalists.

Well, last week a reporter in West Virginia was arrested for yelling questions at Roswell’s own Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. Tom Price.

The reporter did not threaten Dr. Price. He did not yell profanities or attempt to make physical contact with him in any way. He simply asked a question, repeatedly, that Dr. Price was not answering.

He was arrested on the charge of willful disruption of state government processes.

Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt later asked Dr. Price if the charges against the journalist should be dropped.

This is a softball question.

“Of course they should be dropped.

No journalist should ever be arrested for asking tough questions. This is America, after all.”

Done. Simple. Who would argue with him for an answer like that?

Instead, he said: “Well, I’ll leave that to the local authorities. Look, this fellow, we were

walking into the state Capitol, and a fellow was yelling at us, which is not necessarily unusual from the press.

But I turned the corner to head on into the round table, and something happened afterwards. So I’d leave that to the authorities there.”

When pressed to give a different, better answer, Dr. Price declined, repeated his previous answer and added that the Capital Police had done a “stellar job.”

We are now arresting journalists in America for asking tough questions, and the leaders of our country are complimenting the manner in which the arrests are made.

It’s happening.

Alpharetta, Johns Creek sign pact to widen Haynes Bridge Plan will add lanes to 2-mile stretch

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — City leaders signed an agreement with Johns Creek Monday that paves the way for major traffic relief along a growing commuter artery.

The action gives the green light to a $10 million project to widen Haynes Bridge Road to four lanes between Old Alabama Road in Johns Creek north to Mansell Road in Alpharetta. Under terms of the agreement, each city will pony up $5 million from their share of revenues from the special transportation sales tax passed by Fulton County voters last November.

Councilman Chris Owens called the agreement a common sense approach on how to get a job done efficiently.

“This is an example of teamwork with an adjoining city,” Owens said.

“The simplicity of this agreement is what’s great about it. It’s three pages.”

the design, engineering, and right-ofway acquisition for the project. Design costs and third-party costs associated with right-of-way acquisition will be split 50/50 between the cities. The design proposal will be brought forward at a future council meeting for award.

Despite its heavy use in Alpharetta, Haynes Bridge Road narrows from four lanes to two lanes heading south at Mansell Road.

The two-mile stretch is a major source of frustration for tens of thousands of daily commuters and for those living in the more than two dozen neighborhoods sprinkled along the route. The two-lane connects neighbor-

hoods along the stretch to schools, Ga. 400 and other business centers.

“It’s a huge choke point, from there all the way down (to Old Alabama),” Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said. “It’s trying to balance increasing the capacity without making it too much of an arterial, going through the more residential sections.”

The Johns Creek concept plan takes the residential areas into account, Drinkard said.

“You’ve got this blip in the middle that’s residential in nature,” he said.

“So as you’re dealing with that capacity improvement, you have to do it in a manner that is respectful of that resi-

dential section.”

Alpharetta Public Works Director Pete Sewczwicz said the city saw the benefits of the Johns Creek proposal immediately.

“Johns Creek had a concept plan before TSPLOST was even envisioned,” Sewczwicz said. “Johns Creek came to us and asked if we were interested. We saw estimated costs, the benefits and we were interested.”

The daily bottlenecks, he said occur when Mansell traffic turns southbound onto Haynes Bridge. That traffic soon narrows down to one lane in each direction.

Sewczwicz said to preserve some nature of the residential flavor of the road, the design includes wide sidewalks to gain access to the Greenway; tree-lined streets and landscaped medians.

“That’s the concept. Nothing’s been designed. Nothing’s been engineered.

Nothing has been surveyed,” he said.

Sewczwicz added that both cities expect to have the roadway exceed expectations.

“It’s already is a major corridor,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is improve the quality of life for those individuals to get to their house in a more timely manner.”

Habitat gives homeless ‘second chance at life’ Women Build Week helps inspire families

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — All Asha Akachi wanted was a house to call her own.

Four years ago, she moved to Georgia as a single mother fleeing domestic abuse from her husband who struggled with service-related PTSD. She found her safe haven through Habitat for Humanity North Central Georgia and told her story May 11 at the kickoff event for the Women Build Week.

“I was seeking refuge,” Akachi said.

“My three children and I were battling homelessness. We lived with friends and at a domestic violence shelter. And we had to start over as we didn’t have a home to call our own, and that meant everything to me.”

Left with nothing, Akachi and her children connected with Habitat and were able to build and move into their own home. She currently home schools her children and will complete her nursing degree this year.

If you’re not faced with adversity, you may not appreciate the things you have in life, she said.

“It’s something as simple as being able to paint your own walls,” Akachi said. “When you’re living in temporary housing, you don’t get to do that or hang up pictures because you have to

leave that place someday. Being able to lay down our roots, have foundation and start fresh meant everything for us.

It meant a second chance at life.”

Being a homeowner isn’t easy for everyone, Akachi said, and different circumstances arise that also prevent people from being successful. But with help through programs like Habitat, Akachi said it is possible, and it might help the family in other ways, too.

“Sometimes as women, we can be not too supportive of each other,” Akachi said. “This is a positive environment for my 15-year-old daughter to be in. I’m grateful for that.”

Allison Mann is on the board of Habitat for Humanity North Central Georgia and said Lowe’s partners with Habitat every year for the weeklong event. This year, Lowe’s donated nearly $2 million to support the Women Build Week, which will take place in more than 300 communities.

More than 17,000 women are expected to participate in the week this year, she said.

“The week invited women to devote at least one day to help build decent and affordable housing in their local communities,” Mann said. “We would like this event to launch the initiative for our affiliate to build a home in 2018. The goal of Women Build is to empower women to help families build strength, stability and independence.

Every woman holds the key.”

Get to know Steve Acenbrak

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell’s transportation department has been recognized nationally as a pioneer in the field, thanks to the efforts of its director Steve Acenbrak.

Acenbrak has been with the city for 13 years after spending 20 years in the Army and retiring out of Fort McPherson. During that time, however, Acenbrak took a break with the city and became an independent engineering consultant with other cities in the Atlanta area.

That experience, Acenbrak said, helped him gain valuable new perspectives on how to solve transportation issues in Roswell once he returned.

Some of these highlights include replacing the bridge on Grimes Bridge Road and building the area’s first

roundabout at the intersection of Grimes Bridge Road, Norcross Street and Warsaw Road. Both of these projects were unique from a design point of view, Acenbrak said.

“We’ve done infrastructure improvement projects that are different from standard projects,” Acenbrak said.

The bridge, for example, has three legs, and the roundabout has five legs.

The city is also currently constructing a multi-lane roundabout, not only a first in the area, but the first multi-lane roundabout on a state route.

These projects have not gone unnoticed, and staff has been invited to multiple conferences to speak on them.

Moreover, students from universities like Georgia Tech frequently visit Roswell to study the projects.

Acenbrak ascribes much of the successes to the creativity of his staff and the support of the mayor and City Council.

But not everyone supported these projects at first. Acenbrak said that there was a lot of opposition at first, and previous proposed roundabout projects were frequently shot down.

“There was an enormous backlash, publicly, over it,” Acenbrak said of the

2011 roundabout. “I can’t even tell you how bad. As the public became aware that we were doing this, there was apprehension. It was new. It was different. And it was nothing they could relate to.”

However, attitudes changed toward this “new monster” once people saw how successful the project was at relieving traffic and minimizing what was once an accident-prone area. Roswell’s

first roundabout blazed a trail for more to be constructed. Now at least a dozen roundabouts dot north Fulton and more are planned to come.

“It has become an amazing chapter in this city’s history,” Acenbrak said.

Nonprofit honors their women and children

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Every year, Mother’s Day reminds people to celebrate one of the most important people in their lives.

But The Drake House recently dedicated an entire month to honor the women they’ve helped after the nonprofit recorded their 400th mother and child pair move in to their own private apartment.

“The Drake House moms are strong, steadfast and faithful,” volunteer Meg Chapman said. “They have fallen on hard times, but they are determined to triumph and overcome, and they are relentless in their pursuits.”

One such mother, who will be referred to as Mary for privacy reasons, recently graduated from The Drake House and now lives in her own home. Mary had escaped from domestic abuse, like many of the women brought to The Drake House. But within the span of a few months, the nonprofit helped her improve her budgeting skills and gain a promotion at her work.

Now, Mary and her 3-year-old son Sam no longer need The Drake House’s assistance to make it on

Drake House staff have been helping homeless women and children since 2004. their own.

Her story is just one of many.

The Drake House provides short-term crisis housing for homeless single mothers and their children, like Mary, in north Metro Atlanta. As part of their mission to help these mothers get back up on their feet, The Drake House also provides education and empowerment programs to help them attain stability

and self-sufficiency.

Since they were founded, The Drake House has served over 400 families and 700 children in the north Fulton area. Their graduation success rate has grown each year, and now rests close to 80 percent.

Nikki, another Drake House mother, was likewise brought to the nonprofit after she was left with nothing to her name except her daughter.

“That was a very sad Christmas for me and my 47-day-old baby girl,” Nikki said. “My ex-husband gambled everything away to the point that I was left on the streets with nothing: no car, no house, pregnant, without a job and without prenatal care.”

She had no family nearby to turn to for help.

“I was so afraid and scared as never before in my entire life,” Nikki said. “I wasn’t worried about myself.

I was worried about my newborn starving or not having a place to live, or even worse: losing her custody to my ex-husband.”

Not all hope was lost, however. Nikki was sent to The Drake House by North Fulton Community Charities, and slowly but surely, Nikki was able to recover from her losses. Volunteers helped her improve her employment skills, learn budgeting skills, reduce debt and save money, all while keeping her child safe and stable both in school and home.

The months of work and determination Nikki put in for herself and her child at The Drake House paid off. She was able to begin her life anew.

“The Drake House and all its volunteers helped to guide us, help us, teach us and love us,” Nikki said. “I felt loved there. Cared for. I can’t thank them enough for all the help they gave me and my baby.”

Roy Ganga named Toastmasters International region advisor

Alpharetta Rotary hosts Memorial Day Tribute

MILTON, Ga. – Toastmasters International has appointed Milton resident Roy Ganga to serve as region advisor for 2017-2018.

Ganga will serve the next 15 months providing coaching and guidance to Toastmasters district leaders in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

He will help clubs to identify strategies to expand the districts marketing capacity. He will serve as a vital link between the districts and Toastmasters World Headquarters.

Ganga previously served as Georgia Toastmasters district governor in 2010-2011 where he led the district to a ranking of 11th in the world.

Ganga joined Toastmasters 15 years ago to brush up on public speaking; little knowing he would go on to serve in leadership roles at district and regional levels.

Peachtree Parkway Improvement District beautifies, maintains roadway Forsyth Board of Commissioners approves beautification grants

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Every day, more than 35,000 cars travel Peachtree Parkway from Fulton to Forsyth counties. To benefit those drivers, the nonprofit Peachtree Parkway Improvement District wants to make it a nice trip.

And now the group is taking a big step forward after the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved seven beautification grants May 9. The grants total more than $50,000 and come from tipping fees the county collects from trash collectors who deposit in Forsyth County.

The Peachtree Parkway Improvement District encompasses a seven-mile stretch of Ga. 141 from Ga. 400 Exit 13 to Deer Lake Drive just north of McGinnis Ferry Road.

In March 2014, a group of property and business owners formed the PPID, taking charge of maintenance of the roadway. Their goal is to create an aesthetically pleasing thoroughfare that will help brand the area as a community that cares, and also attract high quality businesses and residential developments that add value to Forsyth County.

One thing the group learned along the way is the county or state does not typically landscape medians. And at

the time, there was nothing planned for Peachtree Parkway.

So the group divided the medians into 25 sections and will soon have 15 completely renovated.

Since its inception, the district has accomplished much, including: • Intergovernmental agreements have been signed between Forsyth County and Georgia Department of Transportation and between Forsyth County and the PPID transferring responsibility for the maintenance, mowing and refuse cleanup of the medians and right of way for the seven-mile strip along Ga. 141.

• GDOT gives its annual budgeted allotment of $17,500 for maintenance along Ga. 141 in Forsyth County to the PPID. • GDOT has mowed twice a year along the medians and rights-of-ways, and picks up trash year round.

PPID Chairwoman Kristin Morrissey said the group is grateful for the community’s support, including from the board and GDOT, local businesses, homeowner’s associations and residents who helped raise nearly $270,000 over the last few years. It has been used for mowing, maintenance and recent landscaping installations.

MARTA stations have become the new ocean-front property Continuous In case you missed it, MARTA is officially in the real estate development business. And last Wednesday, it hosted the groundbreaking for its latest project called Trackside, a four-story office/retail development alongside its Chamblee rail station.

MARTA CEO Keith Parker has worked hard over the last three years.

The organization is operating in the black, riders will soon have uninterrupted Wifi on all rail lines, and developers are vying for its undeveloped property.

For years, MARTA rail stations have been no-man’s land spaces devoid of any sort of economic life. There was a clear separation between MARTA and everything else.

The new philosophy is to be the opposite. As the corporate elite have decided that they need to cater to the millennial market, which seems to want to be near mass transit, MARTA stations have become more popular. And developers are looking for ways to incorporate projects on and around them.

State Farm is almost midway through building it’s four 20-plus story high rises across from the Dunwoody station.

And lots on either side of that same station are slated for high-rise development.

Mercedes-Benz located its North American headquarters near the Sandy Springs MARTA station, and other companies are moving intown to be near mass transit opportunities.

So MARTA stations are in hot demand, and it just so happens that MARTA owns undeveloped property around many of the stations. So it seems that it’s time to deal.

The new project will be in Chamblee at the Chamblee MARTA station. Parkside Partners will build two buildings on MARTA’s 2.16-acre site that will be four stories and include 70,000 square feet of office space, 10,000 square-feet of retail space and 4,300 square feet of greenspace.

The new development will go nicely with other developments going on around the station that include Peachtree Station, an 11-acre project that will include a Whole Foods Market and several other restaurants.

MARTA is working with developers on several other stations offering its vacant land and unused parking lots as spaces to build new and creative projects that blend with surrounding development.

This particular project went through several public forums that resulted in several iterations. MARTA spent a lot of time working with the city of Chamblee and its residents.

MARTA spent a lot of time working with residents of Brookhaven too. MARTA intended to develop a fairly massive project that included an eight-story office building, a 125-room hotel, 340 apartments, 107 condos, senior housing units and 56,000 square feet of restaurants and retail.

After almost a year of working with the city, the developer and MARTA withdrew their application.

It seemed the residents and council were not pleased with the project. They were actually looking for a more significant development.

Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst was quoted in Brookhaven’s, The Post, as saying that the new development needs to be a city center that not only includes the immediate area around the MARTA station, but a much larger area.

It is taking a lot of work to retro-fit these existing stations into new communities. It will be exciting to see what can be done once MARTA starts expanding and building new stations.

Rountree Group makes move to Milton Company sought to be in the center of north Fulton

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Don Rountree, president of communications and public relations firm Rountree Group, said the world of communications is ever-changing. Rountree Group is undergoing a change of its own with a relocation Alpharetta to Downtown Crabapple in an effort to be in the center of its client-base in north Fulton.

Rountree Group was started by Don’s mother 34 years ago in Sandy Springs. After her retirement nearly a decade ago, Don has run the group as its president and has spent 20 years with the company.

The seven-employee company specializes in branding, marketing, digital

communications, social media, advertising, public relations and local events.

Rountree said the reason for the move after over a decade in Alpharetta was based in the culture of Downtown Crabapple, its growth and location in what he calls the center of north Fulton.

“Milton is in the center of north Fulton which means we are in the center of our action,” Rountree said. “And that just plays to our strengths.”

The move will allow Rountree Group to serve as a go-between for Milton, Alpharetta and Roswell and will allow the company to place itself in the growing Crabapple Market, he said.

The group was also seeking a certain culture for its new base.

“I think Crabapple Market Place provides that culture which we’re seeking,” Rountree said. “Crabapple Market gives flexibility to not only have a very strong client base because we are in the center of North Fulton, it also gives us that freedom of being able to enjoy ev-

More details emerge for Elan Halcyon FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — On May 1, RocaPoint Partners releases new details surrounding its multifamily options at its Halcyon mixed-use village in Forsyth County.

Georgia State Parks launches ‘Tails on Trails’ We outdoor writers take great pride in reporting things exactly as they happen. It’s a matter of professional pride.

And so, here, with possibly only a few creative emSTEVE HUDSON bellishments, is my Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net report on a recent conversation that I had with my dog, Ellie the Miniature Schnauzer. She’s my buddy, and she loves to go for walks.

Anyway, I walked into the office this morning, and there sat Ellie the Miniature Schnauzer. Everybody needs a friend like Ellie – unfailingly cheerful and always overjoyed to see you. I can walk out of the room for 30 seconds, and when I return it’s like she’s welcoming me back like I’d just come back from a trip to the other side of the world.

Anyway, I walked into the office and there she was, curled up in the chair like she owned it and with one paw resting on the keyboard of the computer. She looked at me and then back at the computer screen, and that’s when I saw it – the official announcement of the upcoming June launch of Georgia State Park’s new hike-with-your-dog walking program, “Tails on Trails.”

“See?” said Ellie, clear as day and tilting her head toward the computer.

“There are the details, right there.

It’s a great idea, for it gives us dogs a chance to walk our people on the trails of Georgia’s parks.”

“Well, yes it does,” I agreed. After all, who could possibly disagree with a cute little mini Schnauzer named Ellie? “So how does it work?”

“It’s simple,” Ellie said. “The good folks at Georgia State Parks have always welcomed well-behaved dogs like me, and now we dogs and our people can earn some recognition for all that fun hiking that we like to do. All we have to do is join the Tails on Trails program, and we can do that at any of the seven participating parks or online at GaStateParks.org/TailsOnTrails.”

“Does it cost anything?”

“Just $15,” Ellie said. “A bargain!”

“Once we join, then what?” I asked.

“Then you grab my leash and we hop in the car and off we go to hike the seven designated trails together,” she said. “But don’t worry,” she added.

“I’ll go slow. You’ll be able to keep up.”

It sounded intriguing, and I wanted to know more.

Ellie is ready to take on the Tails on Trails challenge.

“So tell me about these trails,” I asked. “Where are they?”

Ellie explained to me that the Tails on Trails hikes are loop hikes located all across the state, which range in length from just a-mile-or-so to about five miles.

“I did some research,” she said, “and here’s a look at the Tails on Trails hikes...”

FORT MOUNTAIN STATE PARK LAKE TRAIL (1.1-MILE LOOP)

This loop takes you through The White Tail Trail of Red Top shaded forest and through a creek val- Mountain State Park meanders ley. Short and mostly flat, it’s a great through hardwood forest to a beautiful running loop for owners and their dog. overlook of Lake Allatoona.

F.D. ROOSEVELT STATE PARK MOUNTAIN CREEK TRAIL (3.2-MILE LOOP)

One of this parks most scenic trails, this one takes through over gently rolling mountain terrain and through several plant habitats such as pine and hardwood forests.

DON CARTER STATE PARK WOODLAND LOOP AND LAKEVIEW LOOP TRAILS (1.5 MILES) This hike is paved for stroller and wheelchair access, and the Woodland Loop option provides welcome shade in the summertime.

SWEETWATER CREEK STATE PARK RED TRAIL (2 MILES) AND WHITE TRAIL (5-MILE LOOP)

Both of these trails lead to the historic ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company. The Red Trail, at 2 miles, leads directly to the mill ruins. For a longer hike, explore Sweetwater Creek’s rocky banks on the 5-mile White Trail Loop.

HIGH FALLS STATE PARK FALLS TRAIL (1.5-MILE LOOP)

She stood up then and stretched, then settled back into her place in the chair.

“We also get bragging rights,” she added. “And that’s important, you know.”

Susan Velazquez won the trip at Appen Media Group’s 55+ Lifestyle and Travel Expo May 6. She visited most of the 40 diverse vendors, played the game to win and entered, but didn’t think she would end up winning a trip to Italy.

“I didn’t even believe it,” Velazquez said. “I thought it was a prank. My daughter even said it was a scam.”

She is in the process of planning the trip with Debra Levinson, owner of Mr. and Mrs. Italy.

“All the trips are amazing,” Levinson said. “But the ones that are the creme de la creme are those who say, ‘I know you have knowledge. Let me know where I’m going.’”

for the College of Education at University of Phoenix, attributes the loss of new teachers to the lack of continuing teacher development, induction and other educator support programs. “We need to focus on helping teachers grow professionally and be reflective in their practice.”

In a recent University of Phoenix College of Education survey, more than three in five K−12 teachers cite mentorship programs that support teachers in their first few years of teaching as key in retaining talent. Forty-six percent of those survey respondents also indicate teacher induction programs designed to mentor and provide professional development as a way to grow the teacher talent pipeline.

Drotos says while the teacher shortage can be attributed to many things— including baby boomer teachers retiring and insufficient resources—helping mitigate the teacher shortage begins with providing them with resources to seek coursework for recertification and to stay current in their field with the latest knowledge of how students learn.

The same K−12 survey found that just one-third of teachers say they have significant training in standards and assessment preparation and curriculum development.

Supporting Teachers and Districts in the Changing Education Landscape Drotos added that districts need to become savvier with their resources to support their educators during this critical time in their career. “The first few years of a teacher’s career are vital

to his or her success. We need to create an environment where teachers are provided the training and mentoring to boost their confidence and effectiveness in the classroom.”

According to the same survey, some skills for which K−12 teachers say they are interested in pursuing more development include: • Technology in the classroom to embrace the latest development in technology and software applications • Addressing student behavior issues with the skills necessary to effectively manage classrooms • Curriculum and instruction to help in curriculum analysis, design, development and implementation • Teacher leadership that utilizes collaboration, mentoring and inclusion as a way to initiate and sustain change in their school community.

Newest Eagle Scouts New Eagle Scouts for the for April announced Northern Ridge District NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Northern Ridge Boy Scout District, which includes the cities of Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton, has revealed its newest Eagle Scouts.

These Scouts passed their Board of Review on April 27.

The Scouts who passed their Eagle Board of Reviews, held at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church are: Nicholas Pittman, of Troop 7153, was sponsored by St. Brigid Catholic Church. His project was the design and construction of six glass display cases, to hold artifacts, for the museum at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center.

Sterling Johnston, of Troop 356, sponsored by Fellowship Christian School, whose project was the design and construction of a pedestrian bridge that connected an outside pathway in in the wooded area of North Park.

Taylor Berthelot, of Troop 841, was sponsored by St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. His project was the design and construction of a nature walk on the property of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Berthelot also created a clearing for youth groups to hold campouts.

Connor Neely, of Troop 27, sponsored by the Johns Creek Christian Church, whose project was the design and construction of three garden boxes and the repair of the existing garden boxes.

Vishal Rajakani, of Troop 27, was sponsored by the Johns Creek Christian Church. For his project, Rajakani designed and constructed an Adirondack shelter for the ducks located at the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center Duck Pond. He also constructed a base for the bunny exhibit at Autrey Mill Nature Center.

Robert Spradlin, of Troop 69, sponsored by Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, whose project was the design and construction of a walking bridge at Webb Bridge Park. This bridge connected the soccer fields to parking area, angling over a ditch.

CHS students earn Girl Scout Gold Award ROSWELL, Ga. — Centennial High School has announced that three of its students have earned the highest achievement in Girl Scouting this year.

Abigail Harden, Kara Gibson and Michelle Manganiello have all dedicated countless hours of work to earn their Gold Awards.

The Gold Award is open only to high school students and requires recipients to create a sustainable and measurable “Take Action Project.” On average, these projects take one to two years to complete.

The goal of these projects is to provide meaningful, long-term solu-

tions for local and global communities.

Each awardee was asked to design, plan, implement, and evaluate their project based on an issue that spoke to them.

For her Gold Award project, Michelle Manganiello donated 300 books to Esther Jackson Elementary School and created a ‘reading nook’ consisting of a bookshelf, a bench and a ‘Michelle’s Book Nook’ sign. She also created a reading program for high school students to read the donated books to elementary school students during after school care.

Alpharetta Girl Scout troop helps seniors ‘Garden for Health’ Young volunteers connect with residents of Charter Senior Living ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Girl Scout Sarah Kucia of Troop # 3347 in Alpharetta recently reached out to Charter Senior Living of Alpharetta in pursuit of earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.

This is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.

Kucia proposed building and planting two raised garden beds for Charter of Alpharetta residents. She met with Community Relations Director Paula Haynes and Executive Director Jeannette Rodgers to explain how they wanted to add to the well-being of the residents by building this “Garden for Health.”

Kucia and her team met with residents and staff at Charter Senior Living

of Alpharetta on April 22 with materials that were donated by local sponsors.

The building of the two garden beds was completed by the Girl Scout troop that day.

On April 29, fellow Cambridge High School friends, mother, father, family members and residents filled the backyard and planted flowers, cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes and herbs. The event brought such joy as residents, staff and family were prepared for a sunny day with garden hats.

Kucia said she plans to return to help residents ensure those vegetables and herbs grow along with the relationships that were planted that day.

Adhering to the advice of Charter’s residents, the team planted marigolds around the perimeter of the garden beds to keep insects away.

Charter Senior Living of Alpharetta shared that Sarah, her friends and parents have become part of the Charter family.

Local National Merit scholars announced Students to receive $2,500 scholarships

Cambridge captured the Class AAAAAA Area 3 championship at Woodmont Country Club last week.

Cambridge golf prevails in playoff for Area 3 championship MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge’s boys golf team captured the Class AAAAAA Area 3 championship in dramatic fashion last week at Woodmont Country Club, winning the title in a two-hole playoff.

After regulation play, Cambridge and defending Class AAAAAA state champions Johns Creek were tied at 302.

All of Cambridge’s six-member team, which includes Brad Plaziak, Blake Kollin, Ryan Demit, Blake Farbman, Matthew Leemann and Robbie Bentley, competed in the playoff.

On the first hole of the playoff,

Cambridge recorded four pars and two birdies from Plaziak and Leemann. The Bears then captured the Area championship with a dramatic eagle from Bentley and two more birdies from Plaziak and Leemann.

In regulation, Plaziak led the Bears with a 72, finishing second overall.

Plaziak was followed by rounds of 75 from Kollin and Demit who tied for fifth.

The area championship advanced the team to the GHSA state championship May 22-23 at Gainesville’s Chattahoochee Golf Club.

NORTH FULTON, Ga. - The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced this year’s National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners.

The list includes 23 in Fulton County Schools.

The Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

These scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. Milton’s golf team captured its Area championship last Tuesday.

Milton golf wins Area championship MILTON, Ga. — Milton’s boys golf team captured the Class AAAAAAA Area 3 championship last Tuesday at Chestatee Golf Club in Dawsonville.

The team, composed of Matt Cinesi, Michael Olmsted, Dalton Cauley, Phil Jones, Ethan Unverzagt and Fabian Brugeruas turned in a team score of 291 to beat Lambert and Etowah by one stroke.

Jones led the Eagles with a 3-under par 68, tied for the lowest score of the day.

Olmsted’s final stroke of the day, a 15 foot birdie putt, clinched the Area championship for the Eagles.

The team will advance to compete at the GHSA State Tournament on May 22-23 at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MACON, Ga. — Chattahoochee head coach Les Meenan said his team had already mentally booked their spot in the state championship game last year when the team rode into the semifinals with an undefeated record and were ranked the No. 1 team in the nation.

But Parkview had other ideas.

Parkview shut out Hooch 2-0, abruptly ending their season before they reached the state title game they seemed destined for.

It was that game that remained on the minds of the returning Chattahoochee players this season.

“It was definitely on our minds,” Meenan said. “The boys knew that with one bad performance or coming in to the game not prepared we were beatable. We learned from it and came out this year ready for all of our playoff games,” he said.

That preparation and mental fortitude payed off for the Cougars this playoff run, as they outscored opponents 24-2 in five playoff games, culminating with a 2-0 win over Gainesville in the Class AAAAAA state championship Saturday at Mercer University.

The Cougars used a goal and assist from junior Ryan Kapper and a brilliant performance from its defense and goalkeeper Jack Corrigan to capture Hooch’s second state championship – its first since 2011 in Class AAAA. Meenan called his defense’s performance exceptional and said Corrigan’s performance was his best all season.

“You want kids to have big performances in big games and that’s his best performance in goal this year,” Meenan said.

Kapper connected with Nicholas Troyer on a corner 10 minutes into the game and scored on a fantastic run midway through the second half to put Hooch up 2-0. “[Kapper] is the smallest kid, but he

is everywhere,” Meenan said. “Sometimes I look out and think there are two of him on the field.”

Meenan said the team had been giving Kapper a “hard time” about not scoring enough goals, but his goal in the second half proved to be worth the wait as Kapper took the ball near midfield, weaved inside and outside defenders to the left side of the box before burying his shot.

“That was class act,” Meenan said.

“All-in-all it was a great performance [by Kapper].”

Meenan said the mindset for the game was to attack early, a weakness he saw in Gainesville. With Troyer’s header finding the back of the net just 10 minutes in, Hooch began to step back and play more defensively.

Corrigan and Hooch’s defense, which rightly began calling themselves the “brick wall,” posted the team’s 11th shutout of the season. Gainesville had been shut out just once this year entering the state championship.

Chattahoochee continually forced Gainesville outside where the Red Elephants were forced to settle for long, contested crosses.

“We worked so hard to get them to throw crosses in the box and on every corner that wasn’t perfect [Corrigan] was great for us.”

Corrigan made four saves in the second half and with Kapper’s goal, Hooch denied a late, desperate attempt

by Gainesville to force a comeback.

After the frenetic final few minutes, Meenan gave credit to assistant coach Eduardo Coloma for helping keep Hooch’s legs strong.

And those legs still had enough energy to rush the field and circle it in celebration, state championship trophy in hand.

On his team’s state championship, Meenan said he is delighted for the team and the school to overcome the upsetting end to last year’s season and to once again claim a state title.

“As coaches, we’re looking for that spark in the kids’ eyes. These are the happiest moments of their lives. It’s what keep us coming back and coaching.”

Cambridge girls LAX downs defending state champs Lady Bears prevail in overtime, 11-10

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge girls lacrosse outlasted defending state champions Walton 11-10 in overtime on Saturday to clinch a berth in the semifinals.

The Lady Bears (17-6) return to the semifinals for the third straight year and first in Class 6A-7A.

Cambridge led 9-6 at the half, but Walton (14-8) clawed back to tie the game at 10-10 and force overtime. The Lady Bears would ultimately prevail, winning 11-10 on a goal from Abby Edmisten to set up a semifinals berth against Lambert this Wednesday.

The Lady Bears will again play at home.

Lambert and Cambridge will squareoff for the second time this season in the semifinals, with Cambridge winning 8-4 over the Lady Longhorns on March 9. Cambridge is 3-0 all-time against Lambert.

Milton head coach Tim Godby said, “This was by far our best all-around performance of the season and it came at the right time. We only had 3 turnovers in the game against a defense known for their high pressure and physical play. We had eight different players score in the game on eight assisted goals.”

Goalie Bridget Deehan had 10 saves in the win and scoring was led by Kelly Hyman who scored three goals with an assist. Lexie Morton and Sophie Baez each scored two goals.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga., - Blessed Trinity earns 6th straight semifinals berth — Blessed Trinity swept West Laurens 6-1 in both games of the quarterfinals to advance to the state semifinals for the sixth year in a row.

Pitching was once again vital to the Titans’ success as Peyton Glavine and Patrick McNamara each earned impressive wins.

Glavine got the start in Game 1 allowing two hits and one earned run in six innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Connor Durham relieved Glavine, allowing one hit.

McNamara threw a complete Game 2 with 47 strikes on 66 pitches in seven innings. McNamara allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out seven The Titans’ offense had 16 hits in the series with Ryan Davis driving in three. David Dunn went 3-7 with an RBI and run scored, CJ Abrams went 3-6 with an RBI and two runs scored and Colin Davis had two RBIs. In Game 1, BT got some help from West Laurens who committed four errors. Only two of BT’s runs were earned.

Blessed Trinity has surrendered seven runs in seven playoff games but will face a test in their semifinals opponent, Heritage Catoosa.

Heritage is averaging 8.2 runs per game this season and has already scored 73 runs in six playoff games.

Johns Creek sweeps, continues to win as underdog — Johns Creek didn’t secure a playoff spot until the final night of the regular season, downing

Alpharetta in a must-win. That momentum has carried on as Johns Creek has defeated two No. 1 seeds and won every playoff game on the road to earn a semifinals berth.

Johns Creek downed the No. 2 team in Class AAAAAA, Allatoona, in two games last week to earn its second semifinals berth in four years.

The Gladiators took both games by a single run, 1-0 and 6-5.

Hayden McIlwaine threw a complete Game 1 for the Gladiators, allowing six hits and striking out two.

Johns Creek only had four hits in the game, but Matt Gravely scored on a Travis Sands single in the top of the fourth to score the game-winning run.

There was much more offense in Game 2, but once again Johns Creek was able to edge Allatoona.

Brandon Crews went 2-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Cole Neuber, Chaz Bertolani and Buddy Fultz all drove in runs for Johns Creek.

The Gladiators jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and extended that lead in the second. Crews tripled to drive in a run, and Fultz hit a sacrifice fly to put Johns Creek up 3-0.

Allatoona quickly tied the game in the top of the third with a three-run home run off the Gladiators’ Jared Mihalik.

In the bottom of the third, Johns Creek regained the lead with a run on an error and a Neuber single.

Crews had another extra-base hit in the bottom of the fifth to put Johns Creek up 6-3, but Allatoona once again responded quickly with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Neuber replaced Milhalik on the mound in the top of the seventh and forced three straight outs to end the series.

The Gladiators pitching staff and defense has allowed just 11 runs in seven games, five of those runs scored

by Allatoona in Game 2.

Johns Creek will take on Lee County in the semifinals, and once again, the

Gladiators will play on the road.

Lee County eliminated Northview from the playoffs in the second round.

Next series: Johns Creek vs. Lee County, May 17-18.

King’s Ridge falls to Holy Innocents’ — King’s Ridge exited the playoffs in the quarterfinals for the second straight year as the Tigers were swept

by Holy Innocents’, 3-2 and 4-1.

Carter Buchanan threw a complete Game 1 for King’s Ridge, but Holy Innocents’ used seven hits to score three earned runs.

King’s Ridge had stranded six runners in six innings and trailed 3-0 in the top of the seventh. Three walks from Holy Innocents’ loaded the bases with two outs and the Tigers were finally able to score.

Ryan Higginbotham hit a line drive single to score two runs and advanced the potential game-tying run to third.

Holy Innocents’ then made a pitching change and got the third out to

avoid extra innings with a strikeout.

It took extra innings to decide Game 2 as both teams scored just one run in seven innings thanks to solid pitching from both starters.

The Tigers’ John Byrnes allowed just two hits and one run with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Holy Innocents’ Alfredo Grainer threw an eight-inning complete game allowing six hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.

When Byrnes was pulled after the seventh, Holy Innocents’ found quick success against Hayden Milling with two singles and a home-run, putting Holy Innocent’s up 4-1.

King’s Ridge put two runners on in the bottom of the eight after Tanner Wakefield was hit by a pitch and Carter Buchannan singled, but two straight outs ended the game and the Tigers’ season.

King’s Ridge finished the season with a 21-11 overall record.

Area schools make their mark at state track and field meet Local athletes win individual state titles

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Dozens of athletes from north Fulton and Forsyth County competed at the GHSA track and field state championships over the weekend in Rome and Carrolton. Athletes from eight schools captured state championships.

Chattahoochee led all north Fulton/ Forsyth County by capturing four state championships and placed fourth in boys team scores for Class AAAAAA. Chattahoochee’s team podium finish was a first for the program.

Milton’s boys team also placed fourth in team scores, the first podium finish for the Eagles in 51 years. Sam Bowers won the state championship in the 3200-meter run, and the Eagles boys had four total top-three finishes.

Blessed Trinity had the largest representation of any north Fulton school at the state championships and the boys and girls teams both finished in the top-7 in team scores. The Titans had success in long-distance runs with Ben McCoy capturing the state cham-

pionship in the 3200-meter and Emma Rose Bagwell finishing as state runner-up in the 800 and 1600-meter.

Jamal Ellis’ state championship in discus and second in shot put led Alpharetta to a top-10 team finish.

Roswell captured two state championships. Grace Artis won a state title in discus, and Nate Wonsley won in shot put.

Caden Ciul of Johns Creek won the state title in the 300-meter hurdles, and Jack McHugh of King’s Ridge placed first in the 110-meter hurdles.

West Forsyth athletes Jack Haller and Liz Galarza each captured state championship – Haller in pole vault and Galarza in the 1600-meter run. Galarza placed second in the 3200-meter run.

5 Centennial students selected for Governor’s Honors Program ROSWELL, Ga. — This year, five students from Centennial High School have been selected to attend the 2017 Georgia Governor’s Honors Program, hosted at Berry College.

GHP is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. Selection is based on a combination of ability and interest and is highly competitive.

Only 72 students were selected as finalists in all of Fulton County out of thousands of entrants.

This will mark the 54th consecutive summer of GHP, making it the longest continually running program in the nation.

Students will arrive on the campus of Berry College June 18. They will spend the mornings in their major area of nomination, exploring topics not usually found in the regular high school classroom for four consecutive weeks. Evenings are filled with seminars, activities, concerts and performances.

However, Acenbrak said that Roswell is still greatly struggling with connectivity.

Roswell is a city of rolling hills, according to Acenbrack, and a lot of the roads follow these ridge lines, which

isn’t always the best for traffic patterns.

He added that one-third of the entire city’s streets end in cul-de-sacs.

“It’s one of the highest percentages nationally,” Acenbrak said. “It’s extremely unusual.”

The high concentration of cul-desacs can create conflict points for traffic and residents in those neighborhoods.

“When you only have one entrance or exit to some place, if there’s an accident or emergency, people can be

trapped,” Acenbrak said. “We’ve had that happen in the past. So we’re trying to open up these various places so people have more mobility.”

One of the biggest projects the department is currently working on aims to ameliorate these issues by adding more connections between existing streets. The Sun Valley Expansion project is expected to make a throughway from Mansell Road to Ga. 9 to relieve congestion along those corridors. Phase

I is already in construction, and Phase II and III are in the works.

Acenbrak encourages transparency and open dialog between residents and his department. For example, the city has an app called seeclickfix that residents can use to report potholes or other road damages.

They also have a free alert system called Nixle that residents can sign up for to receive traffic and emergency alerts in the city.

The incident occurred at an ATM on Jones Bridge Road. Before the check was confirmed to be fraudulent, $5,000 was used from the account in two separate transactions in Lawrenceville.

A third transaction was attempted, but denied due to the account’s suspicious activity. A man identifying himself as the account holder called the bank Oct. 26 asking why his card was not working. A few hours later the same day, another man identifying himself as the account holder reported that his debit card was stolen. The account was officially closed in November. SunTrust gave police all relevant materials May 1 to aid in the investigation after deciding to prosecute for deposit account fraud.

Man charged with theft of computer equipment

MILTON, Ga. — Milton police were called to Fry’s Electronics on Webb Road after a loss prevention officer observed a man conceal several items of computer merchandise in his backpack and walk out of the store.

The man paid for one item he did not conceal but passed all other points of sale with the concealed items still in his backpack. The items stolen included multiple hard drives and a computer gaming mouse. The total value of the items was $900.

The man was arrested for theft.

Blessed Trinity state championship LAX game postponed Field, equipment issues delay game, force site change

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA – Blessed Trinity and Kell were set to play the first-ever lacrosse state championship at a neutral site on Saturday at Lakewood Stadium, but what resulted proved to an embarrassing episode for Lakewood Stadium, Atlanta Public Schools and the Georgia High School Association (GHSA).

Goals to be used in the game were dented and the nets of the replacement goals were improperly strung. The restraining line was not painted completely across the field and the facility did not provide game balls for the Class A-5A state championship game.

After a near two-hour delay, the GHSA and staff of Blessed Trinity and Kell agreed to postpone the game.

Officials first noticed the dented goals just before the game was set to start.

Staff with Lakewood Stadium went out to purchase, from a local sporting goods store, string for the nets and paint for the field after it was brought to the officials’ attention that the restraining line was not painted across the entire field.

In addition, the facility did not provide game balls, which under the GHSA, must be unused prior to the start of a contest.

Though Kell and Blessed Trinity’s coaches had unused, regulation balls, the game was eventually postponed as players from each team had been in the sun for over three hours with no clear end to the delay in sight.

Blessed Trinity head coach Liz McFarland said the GHSA was reluctant to postpone the game, but “wiser thoughts prevailed.”

McFarland, along with BT athletic director Ricky Turner

and Kell AD Robert Horn, spoke with GHSA Director Gary Phillips, who eventually allowed the game to be postponed.

“I was so impressed with the way [Turner and Horn] handled it. They took input from players, coaches and all of us into consideration. Everybody worked together to come to the right conclusion and we all agreed it was the right decision,” McFarland said.

She said that both teams had the expectations that the field and equipment would be ready and to regulations in the first neutral state championship game, but that was not the case.

“And that’s a shame,” she said.

After it was agreed upon to postpone the state title game, team captains from Kell and Blessed Trinity gathered at midfield for a coin toss to decide which team would host the rescheduled game.

BT won the coin toss to host the game, but on Monday the GHSA stated that the game must be played on a neutral site. Walton, who had both of its teams eliminated in the Class 6A-7A quarterfinals over the weekend, was chosen as the neutral site.

The state championship game will be held this Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Walton.
