FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — An undercover investigation into Forsyth County massage parlors has uncovered several businesses attempting to provide illegal sexual acts and has led to three arrests. On May 18, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Ordinance and Permits Unit conducted an undercover operation targeting local massage parlors. Its purpose was to combat and suppress illegal sexual acts for hire and to check the massage parlors and their employees for compliance with state laws and county ordinance, according to Public Information Officer Doug Rainwater. Three businesses were targeted, and at each, an undercover deputy was solicited for a sexual act. This operation resulted in three arrests with a total of

Battle the Bulge! By Kiran Sajja, M.D.
Kiran Sajja, MD.
Reconstructive and Aesthetic Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon
Not at your waist line, but on your face! How many times do you look in the mirror and you think…that can’t be me! You envision yourself as energetic and youthful, but your eyes tell a different story. You find the droopy skin of your upper eyelids make you look disinterested or angry. The puffiness and dark circles of your lower eyelids make you look tired and aged.
Gone are the days that you have to grow graceful with age… YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Eyelid rejuvenation is a common outpatient procedure which combines the use of minimally-invasive facial injectables and surgical techniques. Botox and Dysport can be used to relax the tense muscles of the brow and forehead and diminish prominent crow’s feet. Fillers, such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Sculptra, can be used to correct loss of natural volume that occurs with age restoring a youthful contour to the eyelid and cheek. Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can be performed to remove excess skin and fat around the eyes. These procedures can be performed with minimal to no scarring. Upper eyelid surgery in some circumstances may be covered by your medical insurance. At Milan Eye Center, Dr. Kiran Sajja has demonstrated unsurpassed skill in the use of facial injectables and eyelid surgery. He has been designated, by his peers, as one of the “Best Doctors in America”. Dr. Sajja is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in reconstructive and cosmetic oculofacial plastic surgery. This unique background means Dr. Sajja possesses the microsurgical precision of an eye surgeon and the artistry and imagination of a plastic surgeon. Dr. Sajja uses a wide variety of injectable products and surgical techniques to achieve your desired result. Dr. Sajja welcomes the opportunity to discuss your specific cosmetic concerns and work with you to design an appropriate and individualized treatment plan. Dr. Sajja is available for consultation at 5 convenient locations across North Atlanta in Johns Creek, Marietta, Cumming, Buford, and Canton.

County considers layout options ranging from $4-7M By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Students at the future Denmark High School and nearby residents will be able to walk down the street to a new library within a few years after action by the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners. At its May 23 meeting, the board decided that a new library would be the best option of those under consideration for the extra space on the school’s land at 645 Mullinax Road. The decision comes four years after the county opened its fourth library, the $6.5 million Post Road Branch. The board weighed the library against other suggestions, including a practice field and a satellite office for the Forsyth County Sheriff. The satellite office idea was scrapped when Sheriff Ron Freeman told the board his department didn’t need a location at the site because there would be a full-time resource officer at Denmark High School. Greenberg Farrow Architecture will return at a later meeting with a proposal that includes 5.5 acres without field space. Construction of a branch library will also require an intergovernmental agreement between the library board and the school. Denmark High School is scheduled to open by the beginning of the 201819 school year, and the library won’t be open until at least five years after.
The second proposed option includes the library near Denmark High School, however the board had further modifications to the mockups. Library Director Anna Lyle said it’s a good idea for the library to be neighbors with the high school. The county’s newest library, Post Road, cost roughly $6-7 million and was on about 4 acres, Lyle said. “That is a small building,” she said. “We’re hoping for this to be about 32,000 square feet. We’re trying to start out larger rather than needing to expand in the future.” Brent Pierce, landscape architect with Greenberg Farrow Architecture, said his company was charged with including 220 spaces for library parking and 70 spaces for the field. Lyle said the department needs about 5.5 acres

minimum. “In our SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) request for the next SPLOST we had about $11 million including estimates, not necessarily specific to this site, but it did include estimates based on past projects.” The prices include grading of the locations, parking and landscaping, and do not include the library building. In addition to SPLOST funds, Lyle said the department has impact fee money that will be used on the project. The initial three options presented to the board took into consideration the 5 percent slope on the site, and were: • Option one, $6.3 million: the library on top of the hill with the practice field below: the library would be closest to the school, have a potential pedestrian connection • Option two, $4.3 million: the library on top of the hill with an informal field, playground and restrooms. Without the field, the cost would be reduced by $400,000. • Option three, $7.9 million: the library and no practice field. This option was thrown out. Field space is often a “fight amongst the community,” according to County Commission Chairman Todd Levent. “The schools all have feeder teams, so sharing a practice field doesn’t accommodate that,” Levent said. “They’re looking for a field and there’s a lot of struggle for extra space.” Denmark will already have field space on its grounds, so that idea will likely be removed.

Marine Corps League hoping to open detachment in Forsyth Gainesville detachment has over 100 members By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Marine veteran Romaine Brunson lives by the saying, “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” Already heavily involved in the Marine Corps League in Gainesville as its commandant, Brew wants to help start a detachment, or chapter, in Cumming or Forsyth County. An information meeting will be held in September to gauge interest in a Cumming detachment. Brunson said the league is an important way to communicate for the members. “They can talk about things that were meaningful to them,” Brunson said. “It’s the ‘Espirit de Corps’ comradery that’s particularly important.” The Gainesville detachment, officially called the Upper Chattahoochee Detachment 665, chartered in 1988 and has more than 100 members. The group meets at 9:30 a.m. every second Saturday at the VFW in Gainesville. Now Brunson, who lives in Cum-

Brunson said she’s heard from many people who’d like to join the de-
tachment, but who don’t want to travel to Gainesville. “We want to help the Marines in this area,” Brunson said. “The comradery is just unbelievable. We have Marines as old at 91, some in their 20s and some still active duty.” The purpose of the national league is to join together in fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps, Brunson said. To do that, the group bands those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service. It is also open to any other prior service member. The Gainesville detachment is involved in programming like Toys for Tots, Eagle Scouts and other honor and color guards. “We do a lot of things for the community and veterans community in particular,” Brunson said. “We are community oriented.” To learn more about the Gainesville detachment, visit mcl665.com or contact Brunson at 570-541-9138 with any questions or to show support.

Community honors veterans and their families Annual Memorial Day ceremony solemn reminder of nation’s freedom By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Memorial Day represents a day of national awareness and reverence while honoring those who’ve died to protect the nation’s values, according to Lt. Col. Reed L. Berry. Berry was the keynote speaker May 26 at the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans War Memorial in Cumming. Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the valiant men and women in uniform who have sacrificed their lives in service to the country, Berry said. “Many of the veterans here today have personal stories of sacrifice,” he said. “They know the cost of freedom first hand and that cost has a first name, last name and families.” More than 11,000 men and women from Georgia have died in combat since World War I, Berry said. Since Sept. 11, 2001, 42 Georgians have died in the
National Guard. “They, like so many others, are honored and preserved in monuments throughout the state and country,” Berry said. “While the fighting men and women on those walls may no longer be with us, their spirits live on through the work accomplished in their honor.” This is accomplished by fundraisers, memorial events and creating foundations to help other soldiers, which keeps their light alive, he said. Additionally, to honor those veterans, the city of Cumming created the Avenue of Flags Dedication in 1995. Every year, multiple flags are dedicated to fallen soldiers, with nine flags being dedicated this year. “They are never truly gone so long as we continue to dedicate ourselves to preserving the memory of their patriotism,” Berry said. “By standing for something greater than themselves, they have earned a place in the pantheon of celebrated heroes in our history.”

Ga. SPCA celebrates 10,000th adoption Nonprofit also celebrating 10 years By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com SUWANEE, Ga. — It’s raining cat and dog adoptions at the Georgia Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. On May 17, the nonprofit reached the milestone of placing its 10,000th animal during its 10th year of operation. “It’s remarkable to see the support we receive for the animals,” said Executive Director Jacki McDonald. “More and more people are choosing to adopt rescue animals. Year over year we’re seeing tremendous growth in all facets of our operations and our need for donations.” The 10,000th animal is a kitten that was named Carmel and now goes by the name Mowgli, and was adopted by Mark and Vicki Grizzard of Lawrenceville. “This invigorated our staff and volunteers,” McDonald said. “This gives us a chance to kick off saving the next 10,000 as our work is never done. There are so many lives to save.” McDonald said this is a major accomplishment in itself, but it means even more considering Georgia has one of the highest animal kill rates in the country. Every year, 27 percent of homeless dogs and cats get euthanized in the metro Atlanta area, she said. The largest counties, including DeKalb and Fulton, see about 50 animals a day being surrendered in county shelters. The animals at the nonprofit are from around the state. “For us to at least be able to see a solid number of saved versus just in need, is so rewarding,” McDaniel said. “This shows we are making an impact on getting those animals into happy environments from where they came from.” McDaniel said while they were attempting to pass over the milestone number, the nonprofit does strive to match animals with homes that will suit both parties. The group is not affiliated with any other organization, such as the American SPCA, and does not receive funds from any other agency. Therefore, they depend on individual and corporate donations, corporate sponsorships, fees, fundraising events, merchandise sales and grants to fund their operations. However, they want to be out in the

CUMMING, Ga. — On July 8, Cumming resident Walter Carmack will turn 104-years-old. Born in Boudin, Virginia in 1913, Carmack lived in several different states — including Tennessee and Florida — before eventually moving to Georgia. Carmack spent 70 years in Tennessee and moved to Cumming nearly three years ago to live with his daughter, Pat Vicknair, following the death of his second wife. He said his favorite part about living in Georgia is the people. Carmack has seen many generational changes throughout his lifetime. His childhood was different than the childhoods of children growing up today. Carmack would often drive his mother and grandmother to go shopping at an early age. “During my childhood, you did pretty much what you wanted to,” Carmack said. “I started driving when I was 8 years old. You didn’t have to have driver’s licenses. I didn’t get a driver’s license until I came back from the Army.” He joined the Army when he was 18. He did not serve in World War I or II, but he was stationed in Hawaii from 1931 to 1934.
“It was back during the Depression,” Carmack said. “There weren’t many jobs out anyways, so I just [joined] the Army.” Vicknair said that during his time in the Army, Carmack was a boxing champion in Honolulu. He was also able to see much of Hawaii while he was serving in the Army. “I traveled a pretty good bit,” Carmack said. “Not too much in the states — it was all in Hawaii.” Since serving in the Army, Carmack has married twice. He now has a large family, including four children, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, and he is very close to both his blood-related family and stepfamily. While his life motto is to simply enjoy life, Vicknair said that Carmack has always carried around a saying in his wallet. “’I shall pass through this world but once,’” the saying reads. “’Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.’” Vicknair now has a cross-stitching of this saying in their home. “He’s always helped other people,” Vicknair said. “So he’s lived by it.” Carmack is grounded in his Christian faith. Vicknair said that he always acted as a deacon or an elder in the church. Now, Carmack spends his days with his daughter relaxing, eating and watching his favorite game shows on television. “I have a good life,” Carmack said.

Community unites to help end childhood cancer Rally Foundation, Dutch Monkey Doughnuts partner for local kid By JACK WAYLOCK news@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — For Martin Burge and Arpana Satyu-Burge, owners of Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming, helping children fight cancer is a big part of both their lives and work mission. The couple has been involved with the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research for several years and both are always on the lookout for new, interesting ways to help fund cancer research. In honor of National Doughnut Day on June 2, they invited Maybin Hornick, who has leukemia, and her mother, Kati, to Dutch Monkey May 24 to spend the afternoon learning about doughnuts and how they are made. “Days like these allow me to stop and reflect on everything,” said Martin Burge, whose family has personally felt the effects of cancer. Years prior, when Burge was in his 20s, his sister passed away following a battle with multiple myeloma. “When you’re able to give back to the community like this with such a tremendous organization like Rally, it doesn’t really seem like work anymore,” Burge said. The mission of the Rally Foundation is to empower volunteers across the country to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. The goal is to find better treatments with fewer long-term side effects and, ultimately, cures.
When it comes to cancer research, the Burges both understand the need for more funding, according to Emily Kallos, director of development at Rally. So far this year, Rally has awarded more than $2 million for childhood cancer research grants. The organization expects to raise thousands more throughout the year, with events like Rally on the Runway, a fashion show that raised over $280,000 for research, and the upcoming Doughnut Dash, which will be held June 4. Last year, over 900 people participated in the Doughnut Dash and raised more than $40,000 for cancer research. Burge said getting to meet the recipients of Rally is the best part of his involvement. He sees firsthand how Rally makes a difference. When Homik was first diagnosed with leukemia, she and her mom were living in Seattle. Shortly after the diagnosis, they moved to Cumming, not knowing a single person, but quickly found help with Rally. “The amount of support Rally has given us has been tremendous,” Kati Hornick said. “Rally has allowed Maybin to make friends, experience extraordinary events and just feel more involved.” Rally continuously aims to make sure everything is perfect for her daughter, Kati said. Burge and Dutch Monkey Doughnuts will continue to support Homick and Rally with National Doughnut Day June 2. While customers are getting their sugar fix that day, they can also donate to Rally in the change collection jars. The second annual Doughnut Dash, hosted by Rally and Dutch Monkey, will be held Sunday, June 4 at Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming.

Here in Michigan, Georgia is a big deal I’m working from Lansing, Michigan, this week, the capital, next to the home of Sparty and host of the 2017 Odyssey of the Mind World Championships where my son’s team is competing. For being a capital city, Lansing is relatively small and very charming, filled with old brick buildings and split by the Grand River. GEOFF SMITH I drew the short straw and while Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com everyone else flew up here, I drove the Penske truck filled with the team’s set props for the competition. After driving 14 hours and drinking five or so Starbuck’s coffees, I was in no shape to go to the opening ceremonies, nor was I able to go to sleep. So I walked over to the bar across from the hotel and ended up having drinks with what seemed like half of Michigan’s House or Representatives. This bar is right across the street from the Capitol building. They were a very lively and very nice bunch. And you know what? They love Georgia. When I told them where I was from, they all nodded in tones that showed envy of what we have in our state. “Atlanta has it going on,” one told me. “There’s so much activity, so many colleges….oh, and jobs! So many jobs!” It seemed almost every one of them had a cousin, or aunt, or nephew who lives in Atlanta. They all had some kind of a connection here. And they all seemed to look up to Georgia and Atlanta. It was kind of a shock to me. Growing up here, it always seemed like New York, California, Texas, and, yes, Michigan, were the big ones. They were the blue-bloods. And we, Georgia, were always the underdogs. After this conversation though, my attitude is totally different. In this case, Georgia is what Michigan now wants to be. The recent economic demise of Michigan, particularly Detroit, is very well documented. It was a city so heavily reliant on one industry that when the main auto manufactures sputtered to the point of near bankruptcy, the city itself filed bankruptcy. While we in Atlanta have seen a huge influx of new residents over the last five years, they have seen a huge decline. While we in Atlanta are running out of housing in certain markets, they are flush with them. I was told Detroit’s city limits are built to house over one million residents, but less than 700,000 actually live there. They are actually razing entire city blocks of homes to plant urban farms. In Atlanta, we cannot build houses fast enough. In the under $400,000 market in Atlanta, we only have
two to three months of supply. If you do not know, that is incredibly low. A healthy market is six months of supply. And this problem doesn’t look like it will go away any time too soon. According to Smart Real Estate Data, in several metro counties there were actually fewer building permits issued in the first quarter of this year than last year. Clayton, Cobb, Fayette, Gwinnett and Forsyth counties each saw more than a 6.8 percent drop in building permits issued. There are some serious headwinds blowing against the homebuilding industry in Atlanta. Buildable land is becoming scarce and land prices are rising quickly. But perhaps one of the biggest issues is finding skilled labor. The good news about our economy is that we are finally near full employment. The bad news is that we need more skilled workers to build homes. Where are we going to get them? If we are at full employment, they will have to come from other industries. None of these problems will go away quickly. We can expect inventory levels to stay low for some time. That said, our problems could be a lot worse. I’m going to head back to the Michigan State campus. When I left my boys this morning, they were going nuts trying to find the Italian Odyssey team. They heard the Italians are the best pin-traders. Raising money for your small business Are you trying to raise money for your small business? Most small businesses need to spend money to make money, and the first step in being able to spend money is to raise money. Most small business owners fund their busiDICK JONES ness through their own Founder & President Jones Simply Sales personal finances, such as using their savings, getting an equity loan on their house, or tapping into their IRA. There are plenty of other choices that allow small business owners to raise money other than borrowing it from themselves. A popular choice is to borrow from family and friends. Your family and friends want to see you succeed, and they may even want a stake in the business potential you have. Make sure you put any lending agreement in writing to ensure both parties understand the terms of the loan. Crowd funding, while still in its infancy, has become a popular way for small business owners to raise money. Crowd funding allows you to raise money from the general public by proposing what you’d like to fund, and then having people choose how much, or little, they want to give you. One of the most common and traditional ways is bank funding. Your banker may request that you have your loan guaranteed. Securing your loan with the equity in your business/home, or having your loan guaranteed by the Small Business Association will require you to meet specific criteria. There are a lot of resources available for small business owners to raise money. Evaluating all your options and selecting the best ones will help you raise money for your small business without having to borrow everything from yourself.

Beat the heat with Summer Sippin’ Highest rated drink to be crowned “Best Sip in Roswell” By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell Inc is helping usher in the summer with their second annual Summer Sippin’ celebration. Like its sister event, Restaurant Week in the winter, Summer Sippin’ showcases the best that local restaurants have to offer. Unlike Restaurant Week, however, Summer Sippin’ focuses on unique cocktails and drinks instead of food. There are non-alcoholic options available. “This event is a fun way to celebrate and promote our city’s restaurant industry, which is a huge economic driver for Roswell,” said Steve Stroud, executive director of Roswell Inc. “By encouraging the restaurants to create new, innovative drinks and inviting guests into those establishments to try them,
we hope to build upon the growing excitement about what’s happening in the food and beverage scene in our city.” Throughout June and July, visitors can enjoy specialty drinks with summer-inspired flavors only available during this season. Non-alcoholic options will range everywhere from specialty iced coffees to juice blends and smoothies using seasonal fruits and vegetables. Some restaurants will also be serving non -alcoholic versions of their alcoholic drinks. “Food is, of course, the main focus of Roswell Restaurant Week,” said Carisa Turner, communications and public relations director for Roswell Inc. “So with this sister event, we wanted to focus on beverages and cocktails - which also felt like a perfectly refreshing fit for the months of June and July.” A total of 25 restaurants in and around Roswell’s Historic District are participating this year. Some of the restaurants include 1920 Tavern, The Big Ketch, El Porton, Kale Me Crazy, Pastis, PURE Taqueria and Spice of Thai.
“We received great feedback from both the participating restaurants and the community last year,” said Turner. “Our restaurants enjoyed the friendly competition with each other and the community enjoyed the chance to try out all the new drinks created by the restaurants for the event.” New this year is the Summer Sippin’ App for both iPhone and Android devices. The app shows information about all of the sips and restaurants and provides a map of participating restaurants throughout the city. It also lets guests rate the drinks from their phones. The drink with the highest overall rating at the end of the Summer Sippin’ will be crowned the “Best Sip in Roswell” for 2017. The app is designed by Ringer Consulting Group, a Roswell-based digital solutions agency that specializes in customized website development, creative design, video production and databases. This year’s Summer Sippin’ is sponsored by Gas South, New Kent Capital and Ringer Consulting Group. To learn about Summer Sippin’ and

Milton creates valuable resource with business incubator Startups to partner with veteran entrepreneurs By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — A new incubator for small businesses is in the works for Milton that aims to grow and retain Milton-based startups. The incubator will allow entrepreneurs to take the leap toward growth and provide them with mentorship from seasoned business owners, work space and the possibility of capital. Dubbed “The Engine,” the incubator is moving closer to fruition as five metro Atlanta entrepreneurs have signed on to the project to serve as mentors and potential investors in Milton-based businesses. A lease for office space along Deerfield Parkway is in the works to provide a site for startups.
Sarah LaDart, Milton Economic Development manager, said The Engine has three purposes – keep entrepreneurs in Milton, have business owners share their knowledge with their fellow residents and to provide venture capital to grow those businesses. LaDart said the project came about during a trip to Atlanta Tech Village where she spoke with a Milton resident who had made the trip south to be a part of the village’s innovation center. She asked herself why would he be driving all that way and why can’t Milton cultivate and support that kind of system. She presented the idea of a Milton-based incubator to Atlanta Tech Village co-founder and Milton resident David Lightburn, who supported the plan. The Engine aims to bring the wealth of knowledge from Milton’s experienced entrepreneurs to local startups, some of which may otherwise be afraid to take the plunge, LaDart said. “We have such a wealth of knowl-
edge and different experience and success that can be shared,” she said. Startups and their mentors will work closely together at The Engine’s 4,800-square-foot office space along Morris Road near Windward Parkway in the Deerfield district, an area Milton has been working to grow as a business hub for the city. A lease is being finalized through a partnership with Banyan Street Capital, owners of Deerfield Corporate Center. Entrepreneurs can rent desk or office space in the location “at a fair price,” LaDart said. Nearly half of Milton’s business licenses are home-based businesses, and the space could open the door for those startups to grow. She said the ability to rent a desk or office as compared to having to rent an entire space could help alleviate concerns of startups who fear taking the plunge. “And you will be surrounded by others on the same path,” LaDart said.
The advisory board and mentors include David Lightburn, Jake Sherill, founder of Tier4Advisors, Brightlink Technology CEO E.W. Looney, Notora President David Hartin and Mark Baule, founder of Selling Insights Principal and Cause Local. Startups will eventually “graduate” from the program, and the incubator hopes to bring together investors and the budding businesses. The Engine will specifically cater to Milton residents, but LaDart said they will not turn away great ideas just because someone is across the city lines. However, those going through the program will sign a non-legally binding agreement that they will agree to remain in Milton. The city will manage the incubator, but the advisory board will run day-today operations and provide funding. Though the project is through Milton, no taxpayer dollars will be used, LaDart said.

Luxury lake market update Brought to you by: Christina Abunassar Harry Norman Realtors The Lake Lanier luxury home market has remained stable over the last few years despite the lake being well below full pool. With the stabilization of the economy, affluent buyers are finding their way back to the ABUNASSAR market and second home purchases are on the rise, as is the amount that they are willing to spend on their luxury lake home. There are 231 homes currently listed over $500,000 either on the lake or in communities with lake access. Over the last six months there have been 80 closed sales in this market segment with the 49% of sales falling within the $500-
$749K range. In addition, there are 40 homes currently pending. An impressive 14% of the homes sold in 2017 have closed for over $1 million. Comparatively, in 2016 there were 79 closed sales during the same 6-month period, with 70% of those sales being within the $500-$749K range and a mere 7% selling for over $1 million dollars. So, what are these affluent buyers looking for? The lot of course remains a top priority. Buyers want a lot on deep water, with a dock and preferably on a point. However, at the higher price point the expectation is that the home is move-in ready and requires little to no updating or renovations. They are looking for top of the line appliances and fixtures with a clean crisp, neutral palette. Lake Lanier remains a top destination in North Georgia for both local and international buyers. Working with an
agent that knows the lake and its nuances is always recommended whether you are buying or selling. With the economy continuing to improve look
for home prices on the lake to continue in their upward trend! 919-389-8317 Christina.Abunassar@HarryNorman. com

Remodeling Expo Center Virtual reality is changing the way homeowners think about remodeling their indoor spaces. North Atlanta homeowners are now seeing their remodeling imaginations become reality. Remodeling Expo Center has quickly become North Atlanta’s highest grossing remodeling company, in part, due to its practical application of technology. The same devices that have revolutionized the entertainment industry are now being used to provide realistic 3D models of in-home renovations. Equipped with a virtual reality headset, homeowners can preview their newly remodeled home without using a single hammer or nail. Virtual reality has been widely praised as the next big technological revolution, revamping the way that users interact with the digital world. Much of the hype surrounding virtual reality (VR) has been focused on gaming, but more and more businesses are finding clever ways to adapt to this technology to their own industries, like medical students using VR systems for surgical training. In the unlikely world of architecture, virtual reality has found its way into a special niche. VR technology is the perfect tool for modeling 3D structures and buildings during the design phase of a remodel. For the first time, homeowners can preview different floorplans, different
color schemes, or different interior designs without ever having to break ground on a project. From the comfort of a VR headset, home remodelers and their clients can make advanced design decisions at a fraction of the cost. One Atlanta business is single handedly expanding the industry. As a pioneer in the home remodeling market, Remodeling Expo Center has already used this technology in more than 100 projects. According to John Hogan, President of Remodeling Expo Center, “Virtual reality is the best visual tool for homeowners to preview their design. Just a decade ago, this work was largely left to the imagination. Now we can generate a photo-realistic rendering right before their eyes. This way, homeowners can see exactly what the finished product will look like weeks in advance.” Advanced technology is just part of the re-engineered remodeling experience. Along with the use of virtual reality is a digital estimation system, certified kitchen and bathroom designers and finally, an integrated installation team. The combination of all these elements has resulted in a remodeling experience unlike anything else in the marketplace. To learn more about Remodeling Expo Center, visit their showroom in Downtown Roswell, 48 King Street, Roswell GA, 404 910-3969, or visit them online RemodelingExpo.com

Being in the business now for 20 years I have seen a lot of change in the real estate industry. During the down turn back in 2007/2008 many agents were forced to PATE look elsewhere due to the decline in income. Developers and builders went bankrupt and started looking for work in other similarly related fields. Spring forward to 2017 some agents have come back and our industry is thriving once again. Being a real estate agent can be extremely rewarding but, also very challenging. Often we will hear from
candidates that they like “working with people” or “how much they love looking at houses”. I am here to tell you there is a whole lot more to it! For one you are responsible for most people’s largest expenditure. You will be working with legal documents that must be executed without error to protect your client. Selling or buying a home can be stressful for your client and emotions can flare. You will work hard to be successful. Market conditions fluctuate from year to year and then season to season. In our current market we continue to experience a shortage of inventory. Finding the right property for our buyers may take longer or we might find ourselves in a multiple offer situation. As the agent, you will need to have a strategy and be a good negotiator. Still want to consider it? Here›s what it looks like. First, you must ob-

Through soggy conditions, golf state champs crowned Johns Creek sweeps 6A, Lambert girls win fifth straight title By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Rain and soggy conditions persisted throughout the 2017 GHSA golf state championships, but it was anything but dreary for those capturing team and individual state titles May 22-23.
Class AAAAAAA girls It took a playoff, but Lambert captured its fifth straight state championship at the Chateau Elan Legends course last Tuesday. After two rounds, Lambert and Mill Creek were tied at 40 over par. The teams returned to the par-5 first hole where Lambert scored four pars, besting Mill Creek’s two pars, bogey and double bogey to capture the state title. Alison Crenshaw and Kate Owens both shot a team-low 157 over the two rounds. Roswell was led to a third place team finish behind a strong showing from Emily Haigwood, who shot 11 over par for the tournament. Haigwood competed at last year’s state championship as an individual competitor. Nine strokes behind Roswell was South Forsyth in fourth, a six-spot jump up in the standings from last year’s 10th place finish.
Class AAAAAAA boys Lambert’s boys team fell just short of a state championship, placing second for the second straight year. Lambert placed behind state champs
Mill Creek, who extended their eightstroke lead over Lambert after the first round to finish 17-strokes ahead of the Longhorns. Lambert’s Grant Cutliff finished two strokes behind Peter Chung of Mill Creek for the individual title. Two other Forsyth County teams placed in the top-five, with South Forsyth placing third and West finishing fourth. West was the only team to finish in the top-five that shot lower in the second round. West improved by 10 strokes in round two. Class AAAAAAA Area 3 champs Milton placed eighth in the state tournament. The Eagles were tied for fourth after the first round, but shot a 332, 18-strokes over their round one score, to drop in the field.
Class AAAAAA girls Johns Creek captured its first state championship in program history last Wednesday at Atlanta’s Chicopee Woods Golf Club, besting crosstown rivals Northview for the team title. Johns Creek held a 3-stroke lead over Northview entering the second round. Both teams saw lower scores in round two, but Johns Creek ultimately prevailed, winning by five strokes. The individual state title also pitted the Johns Creek area schools against one another as Johns Creek’s Amy Ng and Northview’s Christyn Carr were tied at 144 strokes after 36 holes. In the playoff, Carr captured the individual state championship with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole. After finishing as state runner up last season, Alpharetta placed seventh in this year’s state tournament led by Alejandra Ayala who tied for fifth in individual scores. Tied with Ayala for fifth was Heather Kipniss of Cambridge. The Lady Bears
placed eighth in team scores, 19 stokes ahead of ninth-place Valdosta.
Class AAAAAA boys After the Johns Creek girls team captured its first state title, the boys team captured its second straight, completing a Class AAAAAA sweep for the school. The Gladiators finished 3 over par, three strokes ahead of Creekview. Andy Mao and Nic Cassidy posted the low scores for Johns Creek, a 2-under par 142 at Gainesville’s Chattahoochee Golf Club. Cambridge, which beat Johns Creek in the playoff to capture the Area 3 championship, sat in second after the first round but dropped to fifth after the second round. Bloke Kollin tied for 10th in individual scores, scoring even par. Centennial and Alpharetta had drastically lower scores in the second round of the tournament, but placed 14th and 16th, respectively.
Class AAAA girls Rain washed out the second round of the AAAA state championship at Maple Ridge Golf Club in Columbus, forcing Blessed Trinity to settle for a fourth-place finish. BT’s Hannah Jones tied for the individual state championship with a 2-over par 74. Jones finished as state runner up in last year’s state tournament. The Lady Titans’ Sarah Leonard finished 10th at 9-over par.
Class AAAA boys The boys AAAA tournament was also cut to a single round due to rain. Blessed Trinity placed 10th in team scores with a 27-over par 311. Jeremy Smith finished tied for
24th overall in individual scores with a 5-over par 76 in the only round of the tournament.
A-Private girls Mount Pisgah was seeking to capture its first state title after finishing as state runner up last year, but the Lady Patriots never got a second round to do so. Rain washed out the second round at Green Island Country Club in Columbus. The Lady Patriots placed sixth with the deciding round one scores. Leading Mount Pisgah was Morgan Sachs who shot an 18-over par 89 on the soaked course.
A-Private boys Mount Pisgah’s boys also had just one round to score in the state tournament as rain forced the second round to be cancelled. The Patriots finished 10th in team scores. JonErik Alford and Conner McKinnon both placed in the top-15 in individual scores.
