Man cites religious beliefs for LSD possession MILTON, Ga. — An Atlanta man was arrested for possession of multiple illegal drugs near Cambridge High School May 18.

A Milton officer noticed the man walking near the school after midnight and stopped to question him.

Justin Thomas Northrop, 24, of Atlanta said he was attempting to walk to Amicalola Falls northeast of Jasper, a trek of some 44 miles. He said he had been traveling on foot after taking MARTA earlier in the day.

Northrop was asked by officers if there was anything illegal in the backpack he was carrying. After replying no when first asked, Northrop later admitted there was marijuana in the bag.

Officers found three bags of marijuana and a pill bottle which contained LSD wrapped in foil. Northrop asked officers not to expose the LSD to sunlight as it would lower its potency. He stated he had the LSD for religious purposes

and he “only takes it on top of mountains.” He said it was $90 worth and for him it was a lifetime supply.

Officers also discovered 13 pills and Northrop admitted he knew the pills were Schedule IV drugs. He said he did not have a prescription for them and purchased them online because they help keep people awake.

Northrop stated he also had an ecstasy pill, but said he might have left it at home considering he normally travels with five pill bottles and only had four that day.

Other medications and powders were also found, which Northrop said were natural herbs and legal medication.

Northrop said he is studying to become a doctor and has “all kinds of medications.”

Northrop was arrested for possession of Schedule I drugs, possession of Schedule IV drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of drug-related objects.

IRS scam swindles woman out of $8K

House burglarized after leaving for work

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman was tricked out of $8,000 when someone claiming to be an IRS agent called her about fake charges and threatened her with arrest.

The woman received an “urgent” voicemail middday May 19 by someone claiming to work with the IRS. She later received another call that same day from a man calling himself “Rick Harrison,” who said she owed $8,000 in taxes penalties and interest.

The caller also told her that he had a warrant for her arrest and it could be carried out immediately if she did not go to WalMart to buy cash cards to cover the debt. She was further told not to hang up while buying the cards or else the warrant would be executed.

The woman went to two different WalMarts to buy enough cards to cover the “debt” and read off their numbers

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A family came home Sunday, May 21 only to discover that someone had broken in and ransacked their house. Over $3,500 worth of items were missing.

Both a man and his mother left for work that morning in Stone Mountain and returned home to Morton Bridge Lane shortly before midnight.

When they arrived, they saw that the rear door had been kicked open.

Police later determined that the door was pried open with a screw driver or similar flat, metal object.

The kitchen and living room were visibly ransacked, but no items were missing.

However, the upstairs rooms were missing several belongings, including a designer handback, jewelry, watch and

Leaders call for action to fight opioid addiction

By HAtcHer HUrD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Only one thing brought North Fulton leaders, educators and law enforcement officers to the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce offices May 25 – heroin addiction in everyone’s own backyard.

Chamber President and CEO Brandon Beach told the some 60 people gathered that it was time for North Fulton County to confront the problem of opioid addiction head on.

“I have tried to stay in my lane and just look after business and transportation in this community,” Beach said.

“But in the last two years, my wife and I have seen our friends bury six of their children from ages 26 to 30.

“All of them died of heroin or opioid addiction. It is a cancer in our community that cannot be ignored.”

It is an issue that has been taken up by the community and it should be a plan of action that involves the community, he said.

The meeting was officially held with the North Fulton Mayors Association, with mayors Mike Bodker (Johns Creek), Jere Wood (Roswell), Rusty Paul (Sandy Springs) and David Belle Isle (Alpharetta) in attendance and offering support.

Fulton Commissioner Liz Hausmann, whose day job is with the chamber, supported the effort to bring attention to North Fulton’s drug problem out in the open.

It’s young people dying, too,” Hausmann said.

Fulton County is redirecting resources to be more proactive in treating drug addiction as a health issue.

“It is about changing the mindset in treating addicts. We still have to go after drug pushers – they are peddling death. But we are looking at Behavior Health Services as a way to help people who need it,” Hausmann said.

Outsourcing those services will help, she said. It will allow the county to treat people holistically.

“We need new answers. Fulton County spends $14 million a year on health services just for the jail. We need a network of services outside to break that cycle [of drug dependence],” Hausmann said.

John Robison said he would like to create permanent drop-off points for surplus prescription medicine.

“We periodically set up temporary sites to turn in drugs, but it is an ongoing issue that shouldn’t be that hard to do,” Robison said. “Everyone gets it that there is a problem, but we still have people out there that are clueless.”

Many of North Fulton’s heroin addicts get their start raiding their parents’ medicine cabinets for opioids lying around and unneeded.

Doctors still routinely overprescribe opioids for various conditions, and research shows it is a primary source of opiates that starts the path to addiction – in both adults and teenagers.

Meanwhile, local police are doing two jobs. They carry the wonder drug Narcan that can resuscitate an opioid victim almost miraculously if they get to the victim in time.

On that end, the cities of North Fulton will see greater cooperation among the law enforcement departments and with Forsyth County.

“There is a triangle of drug abuse from Alpharetta to Forsyth to Johns Creek. There is no one demographic for an addict. We all fit the profile,” Robison said. “So we will be working closely together and share our resources.”

Synthetic opioids are here such as fentanyl. It is 50 to 100 times more potent than heroin. Many drug deaths are caused by addicts taking fentanyl when the think they are using heroin.

And there are more potent synthetics in the pipeline.

Beach said the meeting was only a beginning.

“We have six mayors here (in North Fulton). We can make things happen,” Beach said. “This was not the last meeting. It’s the first.”

Design of STEM HS taking shape Board approve educational specs for Alpharetta campus

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Hands on labs, “huddle spaces” and collaborative work areas will be the hallmark of the North STEM high school opening in downtown Alpharetta in August 2020 on the grounds of old Milton High School.

Last month the Fulton County Board of Education approved the educational specifications for the STEM high school which focuses on three career pathways – health sciences, engineering and computer sciences.

These educational specifications will now be handed over to the architectural team to begin the building design process. “[Educational specifications] are the documents that the district hands over to our designs professionals, the architects, to define what program requirements are,” said Patrick Burke, deputy superintendent for Operations

for Fulton Schools. “It is not a drawing – it is what is used to define success when the drawing begins.”

Conceptual drawings of the school should be completed in August.

The North STEM campus is funded by the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved by voters in May 2016.

The schools will be open to all students, and will help alleviate overcrowding at North Fulton’s traditional high schools. A South STEM high school opens in 2021. “[The STEM high school] is dedicated to providing rigorous and relevant instruction focused on science, technology, engineering and math that will prepare students for college and careers,” said Burke.

While traditional high schools offer similar STEM instruction, the differential, noted Burke, is the STEM school will provide opportunities to connect students with “unique, authentic learning opportunities” tied to partnerships within the business community.

allowing for student collaboration and “huddle” areas for small group activities.

“We consistently heard the school environment needed to feel like work environment,” said Burke. “These extended learning environments allow additional collaborative space where learning can spill out in a very organic way throughout the building.”

The school will encompass 243,000 square feet, including the auditorium, with a capacity of 1,500 students.

Unique concepts of the STEM school include looking at how media centers and the cafeteria can be fully in use throughout the day, eliminating “dead spaces.”

While the existing athletic fields will remain, their use will not be incorporated into the curriculum. The physical education facilities inside the school will be limited to a 6,000 square foot fitness center/weight room.

Similarly, space for music and visual arts will be much less than in traditional high schools, although the STEM campus will include about 15,000 square feet for the art and music offerings.

“The whole idea is to come into this building and seeing the labs are front and center,” he noted. “You are going to see ‘doing’ going on instead of simply classrooms.”

Take me out to the old ball game – at SunTrust Park What happens when Major League Baseball meets Wall Street? I suspect something very much like SunTrust Park, the new home for our Atlanta Braves – albeit just outside of Atlanta in HATCHER HURD Cobb County.

Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com Yes, professional baseball has gone the way of NFL football, which is to say it is marketing itself almost exclusively to the corporate clientele.

By that I mean the average Joe (me) is no longer the target market – meaning a season ticket holder at the least.

I don’t mind really. I really prefer the TV anyway (except when my hallowed Bulldawgs are at home, and even then only once or twice a season).

But I did want to see the Braves New World that is SunTrust Park. With a cost somewhere north of $1 billion, well, who wouldn’t want to see the elephant at that price? And I wanted my

As My Lady Wife and I were cruising the interstate to take Tripp and Chase to see The Battery (not half finished yet) and the new stadium, my mind wandered back to the mid-1960s when Atlanta first became a major league city, the first south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

It was 1966, and with the acquisition of a Major League Baseball team, Atlanta sealed its place as the pre-eminent city in the Deep South. It wasn’t until 1996 and donning the Olympic mantle did The Big A become the ATL and join the ranks of World Class cities.

Yes, in 1966 I became a Braves fan — sorry Dodgers, but you had to root for the home team. And it was a pretty good team. Pitching was Phil Neikro, remember him? I loved Felipe Alou (hit .327 in 1966, what’s not to like?).

Catching was a guy named Joe Torre.

Say, whatever happened to him?

Rico Carty, a big lovable Dominican player everybody called “Beeg Boy.” That’s because he always played at one speed: Beeg. Shoot, he hit .299 lifetime.

Then there was Eddie Mathews. The Hall of Famer third baseman had 512 home runs. He would be the greatest home run hitter of all time for most teams, but …

But Hank Aaron was on that team, too. Perhaps the best to ever play the game of baseball.

So I was spoiled those first years at old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. It doubled as home to the Braves and the fledgling Falcons. You remember that and you can call yourself a real Atlantan.

Worse days were ahead for the Bravos. They were a big part of the tag “Loserville” they hung on Atlanta. We acquired sports franchises but no pennants – in any sport.

But each year, hope would well in my breast, and I would await opening day. We had a brief ray of sunshine with Neikro and Dale Murphy, but I remember going to games at Fulton County Stadium where attendance was in 4 digits.

The worst was when, in 1987, the Braves traded pitcher Doyle Alexander, our most reliable starter that year in August for a Detroit Tigers minor leaguer.

I was heartbroken. We were giving up on the season in August and obviously giving up on 1988 as well.

And for what? I would never forget that name because the guy didn’t even sound like a major league player. Some kid named John Smoltz. Whatever happened to him, anyway?

There is plenty to see and do before the game. which I was not going to get all gooey about a new slate for the Bravos. That year I wrote a different column. I would not put my heart on my sleeve and root for another hapless Braves team with a bunch of retread everyday players and a bunch of young pitchers fresh off the farm.

For crying out loud, Ted Turner demoted his general manager Bobby Cox just to have the pleasure of firing him for being in last place at the All-Star break with the team Cox himself had assembled.

Take that, you Atlanta Braves.

That became the Worst to First season and the first of five trips to the World Series and 14 straight division titles. (Oh, that John Smoltz).

Those were the days when the Braves played in the Ted, the stadium we got for having the Olympics. It would last just 20 years. Think of Fenway, think of Wriggly, even the House That Ruth Built. Now there is tradition.

We do live in the throwaway age. So now comes SunTrust Park.

I have to say there is a bit of a wow factor. You drive in, you park and you’re 10 minutes from the gate. Except it takes a lot longer than 10 minutes because there is this thing called The Battery.

What is The Battery? I can tell you what THEY call it. They call it the South’s pre-eminent lifestyle destina-

tion. Whatever happened to just going to a ballgame?

So it is not a game but an experience. So why not have an experience?

Much of it is not done yet, but there is still plenty to see and do. Their catchphrase is: Eat. Shop. Play Ball.

And trust me, there is truth in their advertising.

Personally, I don’t go to baseball games to shop. But My Lady Wife likes shopping like I like French fries. And I do like eating. I like eating like ... oh well, you get it.

And if you are so inclined, you can just live there a la Avalon. I noticed they promote USB connections in the kitchen. Must be some kind of millennial thing.

You can walk to the game and walk home. That’s what I did in Little League.

So we did see the Bravos play, and my grandsons were suitably impressed.

But being twins and 14, any comments were mostly monosyllabic. (“Nah hunh,” is about half their spoken vocabulary.)

Well, perhaps I exaggerate. A little.

It was a grand evening for baseball.

On May 18, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Ordinance and Permits Unit conducted an undercover operation targeting local massage parlors. Its purpose was to combat and suppress illegal sexual acts for hire and to check the massage parlors and their employees for compliance with state laws and county ordinance, according to Public Information Officer Doug Rainwater.

Three businesses were targeted, and at each, an undercover deputy was solicited for a sexual act.

FULTON COUNTY – In a move that could affect the outcome of the 6th Congressional District runoff, the Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections announced last week that “due to unforeseen circumstances,” 12 North Fulton and Sandy Springs polling locations will not be available for the special runoff election June 20.

The areas affected contain some 109,000-plus voters.

Richard Barron, director of Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections said the changes are due to unforeseen circumstances particular to each polling station.

Charlie Harper, a spokesman for Republican Karen Handel’s campaign, said that there is no indication of “political shenanigans” in the polling

changes.

“The reasons for the changes are valid. Many of these polling sites are schools. It’s just one of the things that puts the “special” in special elections,” Harper said. “It is just another burden to a summer election along with vacations and people getting out of town.”

That is why the Handel campaign is putting an emphasis on early voting that began May 31.

“We are advising our constituents to vote early and be done with it. But it is apparent that no one is trying to get an advantage with this,” Harper said.

Members from Democrat Jon Ossoff’s campaign did not respond in time for publication.

Meanwhile, voters can take advantage of early voting (see box).

The county is also mailing notification letters (by standard mail) to residents registered in the affected precincts.

Each affected eligible 6th Congressional District voter will also receive a new voter registration card. All concerned residents are urged to check online to find out if the changes will affect their poll on Election Day.

“The locations will either be undergoing renovations or have scheduled events.

The timing of this election is causing us to make these changes.”

District 1 Commissioner Liz Hausmann (Johns Creek) said it is frustrating because many schools where precincts are located will be undergoing construction or renovations, and having voters show up to construction sites would not be advisable.

“We do have early voting starting, and my advice is that voters take advantage of that opportunity,” Haus-

mann said. “Summertime means many people will be out of town, but there are three weeks of early voting.

“Having a summer election creates issues. I understand that the Board of Education does not want to conduct elections during their construction period.”

The Fulton Elections Department mailed 109,296 notification letters May 22.

JCHS student wins wildlife art contest again Rayen Kang Georgia winner in Junior Duck Stamp Art

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Johns Creek resident Rayen Kang, 17, a rising senior at Northview High School, has established herself at a young age as an excellent wildlife painter.

For the second year in a row, Kang has been judged as having Georgia’s Best in Show in the annual Georgia Junior Duck Stamp Art Competition.

The contest was held April 11 at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta. Kang won based on her acrylic painting of the American wigeon, a marsh duck indigenous to the Northwest and western Canada.

Kang trains as a painter two hours a week at the First Fine Art & Design Studio in Johns Creek with her art teacher Zhi Qu. She said she chose to paint the American wigeon because its coloring interested her.

She typically spends about 12 to 16 hours on her paintings. She began her work on the duck in mid-January to meet the early March deadline.

A panel of five judges was selected for their expertise in artistic design, wildlife art and waterfowl biology. They unanimously selected her acrylic interpretation of an American wigeon as the Georgia Best of Show from among 574 submissions.

And as Georgia’s Best of Show, Kang’s original artwork competed in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest in Charleston, South Carolina.

Her work was ranked seventh among the submissions from 50 states plus American territories.

Kang said she does not plan to pursue art as a career.

“But I would like to incorporate the science and the arts, like industrial design or something like that,” she said.

“Art can be incorporated into many different fields.”

Kang has been “doing art” since her elementary school days. But she doesn’t concentrate on wildlife.

“I draw a variety of stuff – faces, landscapes – as well as wildlife,” she said. “I concentrate on wildlife for the contest.”

This year, she thought her wigeon was an improvement over last year’s painting of two hooded merganser ducks.

“Last year, I couldn’t get the water

right. It just didn’t hold the duck. This year, I got the swirling better. It was an improvement,” Kang said.

The pert teenager said she would enter the contest again.

“I have been looking at geese for next year. I guess it’s the old ‘duck, duck, goose’ thing. The contest is for water fowl,” Kang said.

Asked for thoughts about going for a third state award and the possibility of winning nationally, Kang said she will take what comes.

“There have been state winners who have won three times,” she said. “To win nationally would be nice, too. But the kid who won it all was from one of the U.S. protectorates, and he’s only 12 years old.”

Junior Duck Stamps are sold by the U.S. Postal Service and Amplex Corporation consignees for $5 per stamp.

Proceeds from the sale of Junior Duck Stamps support conservation education and provide awards and scholarships for students, teachers and schools that participate in the program.

Study paints picture of downtown’s future parking needs Alpharetta explores ideas to handle expected volume

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – With close to $8 million already committed to add parking in downtown, Alpharetta city leaders took time recently to study whether the city is keeping up with future demand.

The study, conducted by Nelson/ Nygaard Consulting Associates, also shows the city has no room for complacency because demand for parking is liable to outgrow supply, particularly in the area of available public parking. ”This is a way to keep a finger on the pulse of downtown parking condi-

tions,” said Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard. “It helps guide us on how to manage our parking inventory.”

Alpharetta is right to be concerned.

While it has two parking decks on the west side of Main Street already in the planning stages, there are a slew of commercial and office projects underway as well. And those projects promise to draw more vehicles to downtown.

Both new parking decks carry a combined cost of $8 million and will add 345 stalls to the current 908 public parking spaces – on and off-street – currently available in downtown.

At the same time, though, the Downtown District is in the midst of a commercial, residential and office boom.

Among the projects underway or planned: • City Center — with 70,000 square feet of restaurant and retail, a four-story office building with three floors of office over retail and 168 apartment units atop commercial shops — is scheduled to open in late 2018.

• Liberty Hall — a four-story building with an upscale restaurant and cigar shop on the first floor, well-ap-

pointed office suites covering 12,000 square feet of space on the middle two floors and a private social club on the top floor.

• Downtown Main — a mix of retail, office, restaurants and residential on 12.9 acres at the corner of Main Street and Devore Road.

That’s a lot of cars, city officials concede.

Nelson/Nygaard said as much in its study, predicting that the city’s current parking garage across from City Hall and the library will get increased use, as will the on-street parking – about 90 spaces – once City Center is opened.

The study shows that downtown currently has 3,517 parking spaces, but fully two-thirds of those, 2,609, are on private lots, such as churches and businesses. Of the 908 public parking spaces available in downtown, 445 are within the existing parking deck. The rest are either on-street spaces or in off-street lots.

Data from the study shows a lot of fill in the public lots during peak hours, Drinkard said. At the same time, the study shows a lot of vacancy in private lots.

“They’re not carrying the load they

could carry,” Drinkard said. “Some of them we may be able to work out agreements with. Some of them, we may not. Clearly the existing public parking structure is getting pulled very heavily.”

It will be up to the city to pursue possible agreements with some of the private lot owners, said Alpharetta City Councilman Mike Kennedy, who serves as liaison to Community Development.

“He may come back to us later with some ideas about how we could partner up with some of these private lots, the churches or Publix or some of these office complexes,” Kennedy said. “I think that may be the direction he goes, is encouraging some public-private partnerships.”

At the same time, he added, he wants to see how the city can best utilize the public spaces it has, whether with time limits or with metered stalls.

Right now, less than 10 percent of downtown public parking has time limits.

Kennedy stressed the report is preliminary, and he hopes to have a better handle on the future needs for downtown parking in the coming months.

“The reason the staff brought it into work was just to brainstorm any and all ideas, public and private,” he said.

Glazer said the event has grown each year, with dozens of classes, demonstrations, samples and activities available this year.

The festival will kick-off at 10 a.m. with a free outdoor yoga class, followed by multiple meditation and massage opportunities throughout the day at the Zen Zone. The zone is one of the festival’s most popular sections, Glazer said.

At least six food trucks will be available on location. On the back porch of Barrington Hall, there will also be food samples for lavender marshmallows, lavender chocolate bark and peach lavender popsicles.

For children, there will be live storytelling and music every half hour starting from 10:30 a.m. as well as various craft opportunities.

Both the “young and young-atheart” are also invited to build a free fairy house at the Enchanted Fairy Hollow, Glazer said. All materials will be provided.

Other lavender-inspired crafts will include live demonstrations on how to make lavender bath salts, how to cook using lavender and how to cultivate lavender.

Mayfair students ‘ambushed’ last day of school Water bombs fall as students step off bus JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The annual last day of school water battle was re-commenced yet again as young students stepped off their school bus in front of the Mayfair subdivision for the last time in the 2016-17 school year.

Scarcely dry behind the ears, firstgraders were met with water balloons and squirt guns from their parents who were blowing off steam after 10 months of lost homework, blown spelling tests and dreaded notes from teachers.

A damp truce was soon called and it was agreed there would be towels all around.

Law and order has been restored and peace is at hand – until next year.

SUWANEE, Ga. — It’s raining cat and dog adoptions at the Georgia Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

On May 17, the nonprofit reached the milestone of placing its 10,000th animal during its 10th year of operation.

“It’s remarkable to see the support we receive for the animals,” said Executive Director Jacki McDonald.

“More and more people are choosing to adopt rescue animals. Year over year we’re seeing tremendous growth in all facets of our operations and our need for donations.”

The 10,000th animal is a kitten that was named Carmel and now goes by the name Mowgli, and was adopted

by Mark and Vicki Grizzard of Lawrenceville.

“This invigorated our staff and volunteers,” McDonald said. “This gives us a chance to kick off saving the next 10,000 as our work is never done.

There are so many lives to save.”

McDonald said this is a major accomplishment in itself, but it means even more considering Georgia has one of the highest animal kill rates in the country. Every year, 27 percent of homeless dogs and cats get euthanized in the metro Atlanta area, she said.

The largest counties, including DeKalb and Fulton, see about 50 animals a day being surrendered in county shelters. The animals at the nonprofit are from around the state.

“For us to at least be able to see a solid number of saved versus just in need, is so rewarding,” McDaniel said.

“This shows we are making an impact on getting those animals into happy environments from where they came from.”

McDaniel said while they were attempting to pass over the milestone number, the nonprofit does strive to match animals with homes that will suit both parties.

The group is not affiliated with any other organization, such as the American SPCA, and does not receive funds from any other agency. Therefore, they depend on individual and corporate donations, corporate sponsorships, fees, fundraising events, merchandise sales and grants to fund their operations.

Wilson Creek Elementary ‘Wildcat Walk’ honors current, past students Former students return to celebrate graduation

By JULIA SANDERS news@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A group of high school seniors recently had the chance to return to where it all began.

On May 23, Wilson Creek Elementary School invited the high school seniors who were members of the original kindergarten class in 200405 to return to their beginnings. The students walked the halls one last time while current students clapped and cheered for the graduates during the event called the “Wilson Creek Graduation Walk.”

Elaina Forney, a second grade teacher at Wilson Creek, said she and other teachers came up with the idea after they saw a Facebook post last year.

The teachers decided they wanted to do the same thing for their former students.

“We thought we could probably pull that off because a lot of our kids stay in this community,” Forney said.

Forney thought it was important for Wilson Creek to have its first “Wildcat Graduation Walk” because they wanted the graduates to see how much they were impacted from their elementary school.

“We focus a lot in education about the end game, which is graduation,

and I think it is important to see and remember where they start,” Forney said. “All those kids with honors, robes and tassels wouldn’t be where they are without this great foundation that these teachers here give them.”

Jimmy Zoll, principal at Johns Creek High School, has been able to see some of the graduates from all stages of their education. He was the first principal of Wilson Creek when the school opened in 2004.

“Last year was the first time that I led graduation,” Zoll said. “To shake each of their hands as they came across the stage is just an incredible experience for me because you see from the beginning these young, great adults that they have become.”

Alli Benelli is a 2017 graduate from Northview High School, and a participant in the Wildcat Graduation Walk.

“This is where my education experience all began,” said Benelli, who will attend Louisiana State University next year. “I made a lot of life-long friends here. I learned a lot of the basic skills you need to be successful in life, and I made a lot of great memories that I will never forget.”

Benelli said the Wildcat Graduation Walk was been a great experience for her because she saw old friends and teachers.

“Getting to see all my old friends and some of my teachers I haven’t seen in seven years was a very special moment,” Benelli said.

Here in Michigan, Georgia is a big deal I’m working from Lansing, Michigan, this week, the capital, next to the home of Sparty and host of the 2017 Odyssey of the Mind World Championships where my son’s team is competing. For being a capital city, Lansing is relatively small and very charming, filled with old brick buildings and split by the Grand River.

GEOFF SMITH I drew the short straw and while Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com everyone else flew up here, I drove the Penske truck filled with the team’s set props for the competition. After driving 14 hours and drinking five or so Starbuck’s coffees, I was in no shape to go to the opening ceremonies, nor was I able to go to sleep. So I walked over to the bar across from the hotel and ended up having drinks with what seemed like half of Michigan’s House or Representatives. This bar is right across the street from the Capitol building. They were a very lively and very nice bunch.

And you know what? They love Georgia. When I told them where I was from, they all nodded in tones that showed envy of what we have in our state.

“Atlanta has it going on,” one told me. “There’s so much activity, so many colleges….oh, and jobs! So many jobs!”

It seemed almost every one of them had a cousin, or aunt, or nephew who lives in Atlanta. They all had some kind of a connection here. And they all seemed to look up to Georgia and Atlanta. It was kind of a shock to me. Growing up here, it always seemed like New York, California, Texas, and, yes, Michigan, were the big ones. They were the blue-bloods. And we, Georgia, were always the underdogs.

After this conversation though, my attitude is totally different. In this case, Georgia is what Michigan now wants to be.

The recent economic demise of Michigan, particularly Detroit, is very well documented. It was a city so heavily reliant on one industry that when the main auto manufactures sputtered to the point of near bankruptcy, the city itself filed bankruptcy. While we in Atlanta have seen a huge influx of new residents over the last five years, they have seen a huge decline. While we in Atlanta are running out of housing in certain markets, they are flush with them. I was told Detroit’s city limits are built to house over one million residents, but less than 700,000 actually live there. They are actually razing entire city blocks of homes to plant urban farms.

In Atlanta, we cannot build houses fast enough. In the under $400,000 market in Atlanta, we only have

two to three months of supply. If you do not know, that is incredibly low. A healthy market is six months of supply.

And this problem doesn’t look like it will go away any time too soon. According to Smart Real Estate Data, in several metro counties there were actually fewer building permits issued in the first quarter of this year than last year. Clayton, Cobb, Fayette, Gwinnett and Forsyth counties each saw more than a 6.8 percent drop in building permits issued. There are some serious headwinds blowing against the homebuilding industry in Atlanta. Buildable land is becoming scarce and land prices are rising quickly.

But perhaps one of the biggest issues is finding skilled labor. The good news about our economy is that we are finally near full employment. The bad news is that we need more skilled workers to build homes. Where are we going to get them? If we are at full employment, they will have to come from other industries.

None of these problems will go away quickly. We can expect inventory levels to stay low for some time. That said, our problems could be a lot worse.

I’m going to head back to the Michigan State campus. When I left my boys this morning, they were going nuts trying to find the Italian Odyssey team. They heard the Italians are the best pin-traders.

Unlike Restaurant Week, however, Summer Sippin’ focuses on unique cocktails and drinks instead of food.

Dubbed “The Engine,” the incubator is moving closer to fruition as five metro Atlanta entrepreneurs have signed on to the project to serve as mentors and potential investors in Milton-based businesses. A lease for office space along Deerfield Parkway is in the works to provide a site for startups.

Sarah LaDart, Milton Economic Development manager, said The Engine has three purposes – keep entrepreneurs in Milton, have business owners share their knowledge with their fellow residents and to provide venture capital to grow those businesses.

LaDart said the project came about during a trip to Atlanta Tech Village where she spoke with a Milton resident who had made the trip south to be a part of the village’s innovation center.

She asked herself why would he be driving all that way and why can’t Milton cultivate and support that kind of system.

She presented the idea of a Milton-based incubator to Atlanta Tech Village co-founder and Milton resident David Lightburn, who supported the plan.

The Engine aims to bring the wealth of knowledge from Milton’s experienced entrepreneurs to local startups, some of which may otherwise be afraid to take the plunge, LaDart said.

“We have such a wealth of knowl-

edge and different experience and success that can be shared,” she said.

Startups and their mentors will work closely together at The Engine’s 4,800-square-foot office space along Morris Road near Windward Parkway in the Deerfield district, an area Milton has been working to grow as a business hub for the city. A lease is being finalized through a partnership with Banyan Street Capital, owners of Deerfield Corporate Center.

Entrepreneurs can rent desk or office space in the location “at a fair price,” LaDart said.

Nearly half of Milton’s business licenses are home-based businesses, and the space could open the door for those startups to grow.

She said the ability to rent a desk or office as compared to having to rent an entire space could help alleviate concerns of startups who fear taking the plunge.

“And you will be surrounded by others on the same path,” LaDart said.

The advisory board and mentors include David Lightburn, Jake Sherill, founder of Tier4Advisors, Brightlink Technology CEO E.W. Looney, Notora President David Hartin and Mark Baule, founder of Selling Insights Principal and Cause Local.

Startups will eventually “graduate” from the program, and the incubator hopes to bring together investors and the budding businesses.

The Engine will specifically cater to Milton residents, but LaDart said they will not turn away great ideas just because someone is across the city lines. However, those going through the program will sign a non-legally binding agreement that they will agree to remain in Milton.

The city will manage the incubator, but the advisory board will run day-today operations and provide funding.

Though the project is through Milton, no taxpayer dollars will be used, LaDart said.

Free Fishing Days – and a kids’ fishing derby close to home Summer is definitely here, and there’s no better way to kick off the season than by enjoying one of the many fishing-related activities taking place during STEVE HUDSON National Fishing Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net and Boating Week.

This week-long celebration of fishing and boating takes place each year the first full week of June; this year, it’s June 3 through June 11.

National Fishing and Boating Week provides a perfect excuse (if you need one!) to take a break and get out on the water – and Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources is making it even easier for you to do so with two “Free Fishing Days” during the week.

That’s right – on Saturday, June 3, and Saturday, June 10, you do not need a fishing license or trout license (or Wildlife Management Area license if fishing a Public Fishing Area or at Waters Creek) to enjoy some quality time on one of Georgia’s lakes or streams.

This does not include fees at private ponds or other private water, and all other fishing regulations remain in effect.

According to DNR, Free Fishing Days are designed to “encourage people to try fishing and help celebrate fishing as wholesome and healthy recreation; promote respect for our state’s natural resources, wilderness, and wildlife; and recognize anglers for their contribution of billions of dollars to the state’s economy and financial support for programs to conserve and protect our natural resources.”

I hope you’ll take advantage of these Free Fishing Days. Here in Georgia we are incredibly blessed with outstanding opportunities for outdoor recreation, especially fishing, and Free Fishing Days make it easier than ever to (pardon the pun) sample the waters and see just how much fun fishing can be.

JUNe 3: A KID’s FIsHINg eveNt close to HoMe

There are Kids Fishing Events being held all over Georgia, but the good news is that this Saturday, June 3, you don’t have to go far to find one. In fact, you only need to make the short drive over to the Brookside Office Park Lake (3625 Brookside Parkway) to enjoy the Alpharetta Recreation Department’s annual Youth Fishing Derby.

This event is free, but preregistration is required.

The fun begins at 8 a.m. and continues till 11 a.m., and you’ll need to bring your own fishing gear and bait (nightcrawlers are great). The lake will be stocked with catfish, giving kids ages 4-12 (accompanied by an adult) a good chance to land a fish. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the event for the longest fish and for the most fish caught, and children must be present to win prizes.

Note that fishin’ space is limited around the lake, so remember that you must preregister for this event.

North Fulton remembers the fallen Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton hold Memorial Day ceremonies Alpharetta

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Close to 300 people gathered at the lawn behind Alpharetta City Hall Monday to honor the nation’s fallen heroes.

With American flags — large and small — framing the venue, attendees sat in morning sunshine to hear patriotic music from the city band and a short procession of dignitaries deliver words to guide the nation in its observance of the country’s sacred holiday.

Mayor David Belle Isle spoke first, telling the crowd that “memorials are not for the dead of us, but for the rest of us.”

He said Americans are obligated to live on in a way that honors those who died fighting for the freedoms we enjoy.

Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle said all of us are reminded of individuals whom we have known, individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we all enjoy.

In some cases, he said, we introduce ourselves to those fallen soldiers whom we didn’t know.

Several years ago, Cagle said, he visited the memorial at Normandy, the site of the Allies’ invasion to liberate France in World War II. “As I walked up to that 172-acre site, and I saw the white crosses that were lined up on that humongous area, it was emotional because you knew those individuals paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Memorial Day in Milton, May 29, began with a flourish as daredevil parachutist Lt. Christian Stevens brought a streaming American flag from one mile up to the ground.

Georgia House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones opened the ceremony, recalling her father, a career military man, and four uncles, all World War II veterans.

Jones especially recalled the eldest of the four brothers as the one who did not come home to “till the fertile fields

Retired Lt. Col. Cary King, now an Atlanta attorney, gave a moving account of three men he commanded in Charlie Battery, part of the 175-man command. They were the three who died at their posts during the Tet Offensive in 1968 Vietnam.

The memorial service concluded with the reading of the 512 names listed on markers that line Milton streets for the Memorial Day remembrance. They are the names of Milton residents who served in the armed forces, some to return and some who did not.

Hundreds flocked to the grounds at Roswell City Hall Monday morning to do just that and to thank local veterans for their services.

“Today is a day we hold sacred, to honor fallen heroes and hope no more heroes have to die,” Albers said. “This land is secure and we are free thanks to them. These things are still worth fighting for today.”

This is the 20th year that Roswell has held the ceremony, now viewed as one of the largest in Georgia. As in previous years, the ceremony included the Laying of the Wreath, an Armed Forces Tribute and a From the Heart section inviting veterans and families of veterans in the audience to speak for a few minutes.

This year’s guest speaker was Sgt. Henry E. Freedman, retired U.S. Army.

He spoke of his capture during the Battle of the Bulge and his eventual liberation four months later after he had lost 55 pounds as a prisoner of war. He was awarded multiple medals for his service, including the Bronze Star, Prisoner of War Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and American Campaign Medal.

To honor him, the Roswell Rotary presented Freedman with a brick inscribed with his name that now lies in front of the Faces of War Memorial.

Community unites to end childhood cancer now Rally Foundation, Dutch Monkey Doughnuts partner for local kid

By JACK WAYLOCK news@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — For Martin Burge and Arpana Satyu-Burge, owners of Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming, helping children fight cancer is a big part of both their lives and work mission.

The couple has been involved with the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research for several years and both are always on the lookout for new, interesting ways to help fund cancer research.

In honor of National Doughnut Day on June 2, they invited Maybin Hornick, who has leukemia, and her mother, Kati, to Dutch Monkey May 24 to spend the afternoon learning about doughnuts and how they are made.

“Days like these allow me to stop and reflect on everything,” said Martin Burge, whose family has personally felt the effects of cancer.

Years prior, when Burge was in his 20s, his sister passed away following a battle with multiple myeloma.

“When you’re able to give back to the community like this with such a tremendous organization like Rally, it doesn’t really seem like work anymore,” Burge said.

The mission of the Rally Foundation is to empower volunteers across the country to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. The goal is to find better treatments with fewer long-term side effects and, ultimately, cures.

When it comes to cancer research, the Burges both understand the need for more funding, according to Emily Kallos, director of development at Rally.

So far this year, Rally has awarded more than $2 million for childhood cancer research grants. The organization expects to raise thousands more throughout the year, with events like Rally on the Runway, a fashion show that raised over $280,000 for research, and the upcoming Doughnut Dash, which will be held June 4. Last year, over 900 people participated in the Doughnut Dash and raised more than $40,000 for cancer research.

Burge said getting to meet the recipients of Rally is the best part of his involvement. He sees firsthand how Rally makes a difference.

When Homik was first diagnosed with leukemia, she and her mom were living in Seattle. Shortly after the diagnosis, they moved to Cumming, not knowing a single person, but quickly found help with Rally.

“The amount of support Rally has given us has been tremendous,” Kati Hornick said. “Rally has allowed Maybin to make friends, experience extraordinary events and just feel more involved.”

Rally continuously aims to make sure everything is perfect for her daughter, Kati said.

Burge and Dutch Monkey Doughnuts will continue to support Homick and Rally with National Doughnut Day June 2. While customers are getting their sugar fix that day, they can also donate to Rally in the change collection jars.

The second annual Doughnut Dash, hosted by Rally and Dutch Monkey, will be held Sunday, June 4 at Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming.

Marine Corps League to open Forsyth veterans detachment Gainesville detachment has over 100 members

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Marine veteran Romaine Brunson lives by the saying, “Once a Marine, always a Marine.”

Already heavily involved in the Marine Corps League in Gainesville as its commandant, Brew wants to help start a detachment, or chapter, in Cumming or Forsyth County.

An information meeting will be held in September to gauge interest in a Cumming detachment.

Brunson said the league is an important way to communicate for the members.

“They can talk about things that were meaningful to them,” Brunson said. “It’s the ‘Espirit de Corps’ comradery that’s particularly important.”

The Gainesville detachment, officially called the Upper Chattahoochee Detachment 665, chartered in 1988 and has more than 100 members. The group meets at 9:30 a.m. every second Saturday at the VFW in Gainesville.

Now Brunson, who lives in Cumming, wants to spread the sense of community into Forsyth County.

Brunson said she’s heard from many people who’d like to join the detachment, but who don’t want to travel to Gainesville.

“We want to help the Marines in this area,” Brunson said. “The comradery is just unbelievable. We have Marines as old at 91, some in their 20s and some still active duty.”

The purpose of the national league is to join together in fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps, Brunson said.

To do that, the group bands those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service.

It is also open to any other prior service member.

The Gainesville detachment is involved in programming like Toys for Tots, Eagle Scouts and other honor and color guards.

“We do a lot of things for the community and veterans community in particular,” Brunson said. “We are community oriented.”

NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Northern Ridge Boy Scout District, which includes the cities of Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton, has named its newest Eagle Scouts. These Scouts passed their Board of Review April 27.

The Scouts who passed their Eagle boards of reviews held at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church are listed below: Nicholas Pittman of Troop 7153 was sponsored by St. Brigid Catholic Church. His project was the design and construction of six glass display cases to hold artifacts for the museum at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center.

Sterling Johnston of Troop 356 was sponsored by Fellowship Christian School. Johnston’s project was the design and construction of a pedestrian bridge that connected an outside pathway in the wooded area of North Park.

Taylor Berthelot of Troop 841 was sponsored by St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. His project was the design and construction of a nature walk on the property of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Berthelot also created a clearing for youth groups to hold campouts.

Connor Neely of Troop 27 was sponsored by the Johns Creek Christian Church. Neely’s project was the design and construction of three garden boxes and the repair of the existing garden boxes.

Vishal Rajakani of Troop 27 was

sponsored by the Johns Creek Christian Church. For his project, Rajakani designed and built an Adirondack shelter for the ducks living at the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center Duck Pond. He also constructed a base for the bunny exhibit at Autrey Mill Nature Center.

Robert Spradlin of Troop 69 was sponsored by Alpharetta First United Methodist Church. His project was the design and construction of a pedestrian bridge at Webb Bridge Park. This bridge connects the soccer fields to parking area, angling over a ditch.

Samuel Hendrick of Troop 69 was sponsored by Alpharetta First United Methodist Church. Hendrick’s project was the construction of six 1-foot-long, two-level stepping stools for the kindergarten classes at Cogburn Elementary School.

Clay Voytek of Troop 629 was sponsored by Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. His project was to construct a wooden fence and the restoration of a bridge at the end of the fence line at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage center.

Zachary Weatherly of Troop 27 was sponsored by the Johns Creek Christian Church. Weatherly’s project was to build a library book Kiosk next to the children’s playground at the Norcross Co-op Campus. He then collected 750 books to stock the kiosk.

Cottage School’s athletic program breaks school records ROSWELL, Ga. —The Cottage School’s Cougar athletic program finished this year with seven team AAC championships. Last year, the school broke many sport records, but that distinction was surpassed in 2016-2017 due to back-to-back championships in baseball, JV boys basketball, and boys track & field.

First place titles were also achieved in girls and boys cross country, girls track & field, and boys doubles tennis. TCS also scored its first school championship in soccer. The Cougars finished second place in varsity boys basketball, golf and tennis. These accomplishments tallied more points than any other school in the AAC giving TCS a back-to-back victory as Commissioner’s Cup Champions.

The Cougar baseball team finished 11-0 becoming the first team sport to record a complete undefeated season in school history. The team also finished 15-0 in AAC play over two consecutive years.

Some of the student athlete highlights include junior Harris Menetre leading the league in points in soccer, and freshman Larry Orsini earned soccer playoff MVP, which is both a first in TCS history. Orsini also received MVP honors in the JV basketball tournament. Senior Harrison Rowell took home the MVP award in baseball and junior Sasha Torri teamed up with last year’s doubles champion, 8th grader Zach Wichman, to secure the doubles tennis title. Track & Field senior MeLani McMillon is the AAC’s 100m champion.

The Cottage School has built a 32-year reputation for its comprehensive educational program for students who learn differently. In the last decade, the

Chattahoochee lacrosse alumni win collegiate awards JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Many of Chattahoochee High School classes have had graduates who had gone to play lacrosse in college, and have won many collegiate honors for their hard work.

Chris Berchock, Chattahoochee High School class of 2015, is a sophomore midfielder at NCAA DIII Berry College in Mount Berry. He was named to the All-Southern Athletic Association Second Team, set the single-season goal record for the Vikings and tied the single-game goal record this year.

Jack Cioffi, CHS class of ‘14, is a junior midfielder for NAIA Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah.

Cioffi, a team captain, was named a 2017 NAIA Independent Conference First Team midfielder and a 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Men’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete. Nationally, he was No. 24 in goals per game and No. 30 in points per game. In his first two years, he was a two-time MCLA Academic All-American, two-time SELC All-Conference Second Team selection, an NAIA Inaugural Independent All-Conference Third Team selection and the 2016 team MVP. Through soggy conditions, golf state champs crowned Johns Creek sweeps 6A, Lambert girls win fifth straight title

NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Rain and soggy conditions persisted throughout the 2017 GHSA golf state championships, but it was anything but dreary for those capturing team and individual state titles May 22-23.

where Lambert scored four pars, besting Mill Creek’s two pars, bogey and double bogey to capture the state title.

Alison Crenshaw and Kate Owens both shot a team-low 157 over the two rounds.

Roswell was led to a third place team finish behind a strong showing from Emily Haigwood, who shot 11 over par for the tournament. Haigwood competed at last year’s state championship as an individual competitor.

Nine strokes behind Roswell was South Forsyth in fourth, a six-spot jump up in the standings from last year’s 10th place finish.

It took a playoff, but Lambert captured its fifth straight state championship at the Chateau Elan Legends course last Tuesday.

After two rounds, Lambert and Mill Creek were tied at 40 over par. The teams returned to the par-5 first hole

Lambert’s boys team fell just short of a state championship, placing second for the second straight year.

Lambert placed behind state champs Mill Creek, who extended their eightstroke lead over Lambert after the first round to finish 17-strokes ahead of the Longhorns.

Lambert’s Grant Cutliff finished two strokes behind Peter Chung of Mill Creek for the individual title.

Two other Forsyth County teams placed in the top-five, with South Forsyth placing third and West finishing fourth.

West was the only team to finish in the top-five that shot lower in the second round. West improved by 10 strokes in round two.

Class AAAAAAA Area 3 champs Milton placed eighth in the state tournament. The Eagles were tied for fourth after the first round, but shot a 332, 18-strokes over their round one score, to drop in the field.

Class AAAAAA girls Johns Creek captured its first state golf championship in program history last Wednesday at Atlanta’s Chicopee Woods Golf Club, besting crosstown rivals Northview for the team title.

Johns Creek held a 3-stroke lead over Northview entering the second round. Both teams saw lower scores in round two, but Johns Creek ultimately prevailed, winning by five strokes.

The individual state title also pitted the Johns Creek area schools against one another as Johns Creek’s Amy Ng and Northview’s Christyn Carr were tied at 144 strokes after 36 holes.

In the playoff, Carr captured the individual state championship with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole.

Tied with Ayala for fifth was Heather Kipniss of Cambridge. The Lady Bears placed eighth in team scores, 19 stokes ahead of ninth-place Valdosta.

Class AAAAAA boys After the Johns Creek girls team captured its first state title, the boys team captured its second straight golf crown, completing a Class AAAAAA sweep for the school.

The Gladiators finished 3 over par, three strokes ahead of Creekview.

Andy Mao and Nic Cassidy posted the low scores for Johns Creek, a 2-under par 142 at Gainesville’s Chattahoochee Golf Club.

Cambridge, which beat Johns Creek in the playoff to capture the Area 3 championship, sat in second after the first round but dropped to fifth after the second round.

Bloke Kollin tied for 10th in individual scores, scoring even par.

Centennial and Alpharetta had drastically lower scores in the second round of the tournament, but placed 14th and 16th, respectively.

Class AAAA girls Rain washed out the second round of the AAAA state championship at Maple Ridge Golf Club in Columbus, forcing Blessed Trinity to settle for a fourth-place finish.

BT’s Hannah Jones tied for the individual state championship with a 2-over

par 74. Jones finished as state runner up in last year’s state tournament.

The Lady Titans’ Sarah Leonard finished 10th at 9-over par.

Class AAAA boys The boys AAAA tournament was also cut to a single round due to rain.

Blessed Trinity placed 10th in team scores with a 27-over par 311.

Jeremy Smith finished tied for 24th overall in individual scores with a 5-over par 76 in the only round of the tournament.

A-Private girls Mount Pisgah was seeking to capture its first state title after finishing as state runner up last year, but the Lady Patriots never got a second round to do so.

Rain washed out the second round at Green Island Country Club in Columbus. The Lady Patriots placed sixth with the deciding round one scores.

Leading Mount Pisgah was Morgan Sachs who shot an 18-over par 89 on the soaked course.

A-Private boys Mount Pisgah’s boys also had just one round to score in the state tournament as rain forced the second round to be cancelled. The Patriots finished 10th in team scores.

JonErik Alford and Conner McKinnon both placed in the top-15 in individual scores.

Johns Creek, Lee County settle it on the field Lee County downs Gladiators in decisive Game 3

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com LEE COUNTY, Ga. — Though his team had just suffered a loss that ended its season, Johns Creek head baseball coach Billy Nicholson was still OK. “If there’s one thing we can take from [Game 3], it’s got to be the fact that they were able to settle it on the field,” Nicholson said. “For that day, Lee County was just the best team.”

Lee County used a seven-run fifth inning and a complete game shutout from pitcher Josh Hatcher to down the Gladiators 8-0 in Game 3 of the Class AAAAAA semifinals.

“We felt like it was one of those games where as soon as someone got a crack in the door the game could bust open,” Nicholson said. “The game went that way, just not for us.”

The loss ended a season in which the Gladiators overcame several unlikely situations to advance to the program’s second semifinals appearance.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Gladiators were

multiple wins outside a playoff berth after dropping four games in a row by one run.

The Gladiators then pulled together for a five-game winning streak against region opponents to close out the regular season, including an 8-6 win over Alpharetta in the season finale to earn a playoff berth.

“That stretch was indicative of our season,” Nicholson said. “Lots of highs and lots of lows.”

“The guys came together, started believing in themselves and caught

lightning in a bottle. As a coach it was fun to watch,” he said.

Johns Creek then made a run to the semifinals, winning six games on the road — all against higher-seeded teams – before matching up with Lee County.

Then the most unpredictable occurrence of the Gladiators season occurred when the Georgia High School Association overturned a ruling in Game 2 after Johns Creek had apparently won the game.

Johns Creek appealed twice, winning its second appeal to the GHSA Board of Trustees, to earn a Game 3 nine days after Game 2.

Nicholson said the appeal process, and wondering if his team’s seniors would ever have a chance to play another high school game, was exhausting.

“But every moment was worth it,” he said.

After graduating Thursday night, the team’s seniors did play in one more game, but the program’s first trip to the state championship game was not to be.

Nicholson said his 17 seniors have been a close-knit group from day one,

DUI suspect caught traveling at 102 mph ALPHARETTA, Ga.— A Florida man on vacation in Cumming was clocked at 102 mph on Ga. 400 on May 8 in Alpharetta and was later arrested for DUI and possession of marijuana.

Officers clocked the man on Ga. 400 northbound just before midnight and an officer pulled the driver over after he said he saw the driver throw a small bag out of the window.

When officers questioned the man, he was “hesitant” and said he did not throw anything out of the window.

Officers smelled marijuana and alcohol on his person.

The man was arrested for DUI and driving under the influence of multiple substances.

Blessed Trinity falls in state championship to region rivals Marist comes back to win deciding Game 3

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROME, Ga. — Making its fourth straight state championship appearance, Blessed Trinity baseball fell to region foes Marist in three games last week in the Class AAAA state championship series. Marist claimed its 13th baseball state championship while denying BT its fourth.

The state title series loss was BT’s second straight after capturing the state title in 2014 and 2015.

The Titans had no troubles in Game 1, dominating the Eagles 11-1 in a game that ended after the bottom of the fifth on a run-rule.

Colin Davis and Jake Lundkovsky each batted 3-3 with Lundkovsky driving in four runs. Mitchell Weidner also hit a home run in the win that saw BT light up Marist for six runs in the top of the fifth.

Peyton Glavine threw a complete game for the Titans, allowing five hits

and one earned run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Game 1 appeared to be a continuation of the two teams’ series in the regular season. Blessed Trinity swept Marist, 7-2, 9-4 and 4-0 on its way to claiming the region title. However, Games 2 and 3 would see BT’s dominance over the War Eagles end.

BT got off to a promising start in Game 2 as Colin Davis improved to 4-4 in the series with a double to score his brother, Ryan. Lundkovsky followed that double with one of his own, scoring Davis to put the Titans up 2-0 early.

But those would be the last runs of the game for the Titans.

Marist loaded the bases in the top of the third against BT starter Patrick McNamee, who gave up two singles and a walk. A BT error on an infield grounder scored one run and was followed by another single to tie the game at 2-2.

With the bases still loaded, Marist hit a bases-clearing triple before adding another run to go up 6-2.

Blessed Trinity stranded six runners in the next four innings, as Marist added an insurance run to take Game 2, 7-2, forcing a decisive Game 3 Saturday.

In that decisive game, BT stranded

six runners, which proved to be a critical blow in Marist’s 4-3 win.

BT opened the scoring once again, going up 3-0 after Cole McNamee hit a tworun double in the top of the second and added another run in the top of the third.

Marist responded in the bottom of the third as the Titans, with one of the top pitching staffs in the state, struggled on the mound.

McNamee walked two batters, gave up two singles and hit a batter to allow Marist to tie the game.

Jake Smith took over for Smith in the bottom of the fourth and allowed three hits, one earned run and struck out two in 2.2 innings.

Marist took a 4-2 lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, giving BT just three outs to keep its hopes of a fourth state championship alive.

The Titans looked poised to do so when Weidner opened the top of the seventh with a double, but three straight outs, including two straight pop outs in foul territory, ended the Titans’ run as Marist sealed its 4-3 win for the Class AAAA state championship.

BT’s loss brought to an end the high school careers of its nine seniors.

Dasinger steps down at Alpharetta after one season

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Jason Dasinger has stepped down from his position as head boys basketball coach at Alpharetta after one season, citing family reasons for his decision.

A Woodstock-native, Dasinger will take over as Etowah’s head coach after former Etowah head coach Allan Whitehart resigned to take over the same position at Milton.

Dasinger said he took the Etowah job due to the close proximity to his home which will allow him to spend more time with his wife and young children.

“That’s the singular reason,” Dasinger said. “I can

be a better husband and father now that I’m closer.”

He said the time and travel commitment of his head coaching job, plus the effort to be a part of the Alpharetta community by staying to watch other sports, cut into his family time.

The most difficult part of the process was telling his team after he had emphasized building relationship all season.

“All I remember from that year is the relationships,” he said. “I think the kids played really hard because they knew how much our coaching staff cared about them.”

Alpharetta basketball will be fine without him, he said, but he hates to leave.

“I’m not going to coach them next year, but I’m go-

ing to be their biggest fan,” Dasinger said.

Alpharetta went 10-18 in its season prior to Dasinger’s arrival. Under Dasinger, the Raiders compiled a 25-4 overall record, earning Dasinger Region 7-AAAAAA Coach of the Year honors.

The Raiders started the season 23-1 before dropping crucial DASINGER late-season games in the region tournament and state playoffs.

Alpharetta lost to Dunwoody in the semifinals and fell to Tri-Cities, 60-57, in the first round of the state playoffs.
