MILTON, Ga. — An Atlanta man was arrested for possession of multiple illegal drugs near Cambridge High School May 18.

A Milton officer noticed the man walking near the school after midnight and stopped to question him.

Justin Thomas Northrop, 24, of Atlanta said he was attempting to walk to Amicalola Falls northeast of Jasper, a trek of some 44 miles.

He said he had been traveling on foot after taking MARTA earlier in the day.

IRS scam swindles woman out of $8K JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman was tricked out of $8,000 when someone claiming to be an IRS agent called her about fake charges and threatened her with arrest.

The woman received an “urgent” voicemail middday May 19 by someone claiming to work with the IRS. She later received another call that same day from a man calling himself “Rick Harrison,” who said she owed $8,000 in taxes penalties and interest.

The caller also told her that he had a warrant for her arrest and it could be carried out immediately if she did not go to WalMart to buy cash cards to cover the debt. She was further told not to hang up while buying the cards or else the warrant would be executed.

DUI arrests ►► Terrence Lacliffe J Brown, 22, of

Miami, Florida, was arrested May 8 on Ga. 400, Alpharetta, for DUI, possession of marijuana, speeding, reckless driving and littering. ►► Michael Thomas Martin, 24, of Providence Square, Alpharetta, was arrested May 13 on Providence Road, Alpharetta, for DUI, duty to stop upon striking fixture and failure to maintain

when first asked, Northrop later admitted there was marijuana in the bag.

Officers found three bags of marijuana and a pill bottle which contained LSD wrapped in foil.

Northrop asked officers not to expose the LSD to sunlight as it would lower its potency. He stated he had the LSD for religious purposes and he “only takes it on top of mountains.” He said it was $90 worth and for him it was a lifetime supply.

Officers also discovered 13 pills and Northrop admitted he knew the pills were Schedule IV drugs. He said he did not have a prescription for them and purchased them online because they

help keep people awake.

Northrop stated he also had an ecstasy pill, but said he might have left it at home considering he normally travels with five pill bottles and only had four that day.

Other medications and powders were also found, which Northrop said were natural herbs and legal medication. Northrop said he is studying to become a doctor and has “all kinds of medications.”

Northrop was arrested for possession of Schedule I drugs, possession of Schedule IV drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of drug-related objects.

The woman went to two different WalMarts to buy enough cards to cover the “debt” and read off their numbers to the man.

Police arrived shortly before the woman finished reading off the numbers. They told her to call WalMart’s corporate offices to try to stop the cards from being transferred successfully.

Burglars ransack home while couple is away JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A family came home Sunday, May 21 only to discover that someone had broken in and ransacked their house. Over $3,500 worth of items were missing.

Both a man and his mother left for work that morning in Stone Mountain and returned home to Morton Bridge Lane shortly before midnight.

When they arrived, they saw that the rear door had been kicked open.

Police later determined that the door was pried open with a screw driver or similar flat, metal object.

The kitchen and living room were lane.

DUI suspect caught traveling at 102 mph ALPHARETTA, Ga.— A Florida man on vacation in Cumming was clocked at 102 mph on Ga. 400 on May 8 in Alpharetta and was later arrested for DUI and possession of marijuana.

Officers clocked the man on Ga. 400 northbound just before midnight and an officer pulled the driver over after he said he saw the driver throw a small bag out of the window.

When officers questioned the man, he was “hesitant” and said he did not throw anything out of the window.

Officers smelled marijuana and alcohol on his person. The man was arrested for DUI and driving under the influence of multiple substances.

Plan provides ‘blueprint’ for potential development

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga.— The Milton City Council has endorsed a blueprint for future development within the Crabapple District, one of the city’s most valued downtown areas.

By unanimous vote, city leaders approved the designer TSW’s Downtown Crabapple Placemaking Plan May 15 after an eight-month review process.

The plan, first proposed last September, calls for walking trails, parks and outlines potential residential, commercial and mixed-use development.

Before the final plan was adopted, the city held two public information meetings and a town hall meeting in April, to gather resident input.

Mayor Joe Lockwood stressed that the plan is not a final rendering of future development in Downtown Crabapple but provides a professional “blueprint” for the city.

He said he would like Downtown Crabapple to be a destination and

provide a live, work and play district for residents.

Lockwood expects tweaks to the plan along the way, especially where residents’ properties may become affected.

“This is a look from professional planners,” Lockwood said. “They are not looking at each individual property owner, they are giving suggestions that make the best sense overall. It doesn’t mean that residents will have to sell their land or develop it a certain way.

It’s just an overall suggestion plan.”

The mayor said residents expressed a desire for interconnectivity, trails, walking paths and sidewalks, and TSW addressed those requests.

“There are going to be some property owners that don’t want that going in front of or beside their house, so over time that will have to be tweaked so that we can hopefully address as many concerns as possible,” Lockwood said.

Any proposed development would be vetted through city staff, citizens and elected officials once the city moves forward with the plan.

Lockwood said some councilmembers had concerns with the plan, but those concerns were addressed before the plan’s approval. He said he liked the proposed parks, walking trails and

their interconnectivity within the plan.

The city has begun the initial stages of implementing the plan said Kathy Field, Community Development director, and the order of implementation within the plan has changed from the City Council’s suggestions.

City staff will look at streetscape enhancements, parks and trails, a potential parking deck before reviewing potential valet parking solutions in Downtown Crabapple.

GDOT is conducting a traffic survey in the area for the feasibility of midblock crosswalks in Downtown Crabapple and Milton’s public works department is getting ready to make a bid on a Charlotte Drive extension, said Field.

The Charlotte Drive extension would bring the road beyond its intersection with Mayfield Road further north before cutting left into the proposed roundabout along Birmingham Highway near Milton High.

“That will open that whole block up so it is a very important piece,” she said. She said there is funding for the extension through TSPLOST. Field said the city is also looking at the proposed walking trails, and those will be reviewed with public input and consideration.

Sarah LaDart, Milton’s economic development manager

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — Serving as intermediary between Milton and its businesses is Sarah LaDart, Milton’s economic development manager.

LaDart is responsible for the recruitment and retention of businesses within the city and ensures that Milton supports a business-friendly environment.

And if you are seeking to start or maintain a Milton business, LaDart says she is here to help.

Recently, LaDart said she facilitated a building permit for a business owner who needed to quickly secure her permit because of a seasonal inventory issue.

“Working with the business owner, Milton building officials and the city’s fire marshal, we were able to educate the business owner about what was needed and help expedite her building renovation,” LaDart said.

When a resident or business owner has an issue or the city’s ordinances do not allow the business’ plans, LaDart is responsible for vetting the issues.

She said she works to ensure the city’s codes are business-friendly, if the city can find middle-ground with a business and what can be done legally while still adhering to Milton’s vision for its commercial makeup.

“My role as a business advocate and an intermediary is meant to facilitate continuous improvement,” she said. “I always tell people I’m the business com-

plaint department for the city. When we know better we can do better.”

LaDart also recently spearheaded three special projects for Milton.

dinances, geared to provide businesses with another outlet to serve their customers. The Milton City Council passed the ordinance changes at its May 15 meeting (see pg. 4).

She is also working to develop a small business incubator whose aim is to bring together the entrepreneur, capital and experienced start-ups to grow Milton’s businesses. LaDart also works with the Metro Chamber to recruit entrepreneurs and companies to Metro Atlanta, which she says also has a positive impact on Milton.

A graduate of the University of Tennessee, LaDart worked with the city as a member of the Progress Partners team, the development arm of the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.

After taking off a few years to start her family, LaDart joined Milton part-time in 2014 before taking over as the economic development manager full-time in 2016.

She said working for the city is a privilege. “[Working for Milton] means that I have a responsibility to each taxpayer to earn my position every day. I accidently told someone, ‘on my drive home this morning,’ calling Milton City Hall my home. That’s how much working for the city means to me,” she said.

It is also a privilege to work for a city management team that leads by example, she said.

Take me out to the old ball game – at SunTrust Park What happens when Major League Baseball meets Wall Street? I suspect something very much like SunTrust Park, the new home for our Atlanta Braves – albeit just outside of Atlanta in HATCHER HURD Cobb County.

Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com Yes, professional baseball has gone the way of NFL football, which is to say it is marketing itself almost exclusively to the corporate clientele.

By that I mean the average Joe (me) is no longer the target market – meaning a season ticket holder at the least.

I don’t mind really. I really prefer the TV anyway (except when my hallowed Bulldawgs are at home, and even then only once or twice a season).

But I did want to see the Braves New World that is SunTrust Park. With a cost somewhere north of $1 billion, well, who wouldn’t want to see the elephant at that price? And I wanted my grandsons – aka The Beach Boys – to see it for the first time with me.

As My Lady Wife and I were cruising the interstate to take Tripp and Chase to see The Battery (not half finished yet) and the new stadium, my mind wandered back to the mid-1960s when Atlanta first became a major league city, the first south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

It was 1966, and with the acquisition of a Major League Baseball team, Atlanta sealed its place as the pre-eminent city in the Deep South. It wasn’t until 1996 and donning the Olympic mantle did The Big A become the ATL and join the ranks of World Class cities.

Yes, in 1966 I became a Braves fan — sorry Dodgers, but you had to root for the home team. And it was a pretty good team. Pitching was Phil Neikro, remember him? I loved Felipe Alou (hit .327 in 1966, what’s not to like?).

Catching was a guy named Joe Torre.

Say, whatever happened to him?

Rico Carty, a big lovable Dominican player everybody called “Beeg Boy.” That’s because he always played at one speed: Beeg. Shoot, he hit .299 lifetime.

Then there was Eddie Mathews. The Hall of Famer third baseman had 512 home runs. He would be the greatest home run hitter of all time for most teams, but …

But Hank Aaron was on that team, too. Perhaps the best to ever play the game of baseball.

So I was spoiled those first years at old Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. It doubled as home to the Braves and the fledgling Falcons. You remember that and you can call yourself a real Atlan-

Worse days were ahead for the Bravos. They were a big part of the tag “Loserville” they hung on Atlanta. We acquired sports franchises but no pennants – in any sport.

But each year, hope would well in my breast, and I would await opening day. We had a brief ray of sunshine with Neikro and Dale Murphy, but I remember going to games at Fulton County Stadium where attendance was in 4 digits.

The worst was when, in 1987, the Braves traded pitcher Doyle Alexander, our most reliable starter that year in August for a Detroit Tigers minor leaguer.

I was heartbroken. We were giving up on the season in August and obviously giving up on 1988 as well.

And for what? I would never forget that name because the guy didn’t even sound like a major league player. Some kid named John Smoltz. Whatever happened to him, anyway?

In 1991, I wrote a spring column in which I was not going to get all gooey about a new slate for the Bravos. That year I wrote a different column. I would not put my heart on my sleeve and root for another hapless Braves team with a

bunch of retread everyday players and a bunch of young pitchers fresh off the farm.

For crying out loud, Ted Turner demoted his general manager Bobby Cox just to have the pleasure of firing him for being in last place at the All-Star break with the team Cox himself had assembled.

Take that, you Atlanta Braves.

That became the Worst to First season and the first of five trips to the World Series and 14 straight division titles. (Oh, that John Smoltz).

Those were the days when the Braves played in the Ted, the stadium we got for having the Olympics. It would last just 20 years. Think of Fenway, think of Wriggly, even the House That Ruth Built. Now there is tradition.

We do live in the throwaway age. So now comes SunTrust Park.

I have to say there is a bit of a wow factor. You drive in, you park and you’re 10 minutes from the gate. Except it takes a lot longer than 10 minutes because there is this thing called The Battery.

What is The Battery? I can tell you what THEY call it. They call it the South’s pre-eminent lifestyle destination. Whatever happened to just going

to a ballgame?

So it is not a game but an experience. So why not have an experience?

Much of it is not done yet, but there is still plenty to see and do. Their catchphrase is: Eat. Shop. Play Ball.

And trust me, there is truth in their advertising.

Personally, I don’t go to baseball games to shop. But My Lady Wife likes shopping like I like French fries. And I do like eating. I like eating like ... oh well, you get it.

And if you are so inclined, you can just live there a la Avalon. I noticed they promote USB connections in the kitchen. Must be some kind of millennial thing.

You can walk to the game and walk home. That’s what I did in Little League.

So we did see the Bravos play, and my grandsons were suitably impressed.

But being twins and 14, any comments were mostly monosyllabic. (“Nah hunh,” is about half their spoken vocabulary.)

Well, perhaps I exaggerate. A little.

It was a grand evening for baseball.

It was a little tricky getting in, but once you know the way, it beats driving down to the Ted all to …

Let’s just say it’s better. And as for the latest edition of the Atlanta Braves?

I like their youth. And I have seen worse Braves teams. A lot worse.

Design of STEM HS taking shape Board approves educational specs for Alpharetta campus

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Hands on labs, “huddle spaces” and collaborative work areas will be the hallmark of the North STEM high school opening in downtown Alpharetta in August 2020 on the grounds of old Milton High School.

Last month the Fulton County Board of Education approved the educational specifications for the STEM high school which focuses on three career pathways – health sciences, engineering and computer sciences.

These educational specifications will now be handed over to the architectural team to begin the building design process. “[Educational specifications] are the documents that the district hands over to our designs professionals, the architects, to define what program requirements are,” said Patrick Burke, deputy superintendent for Operations for Fulton Schools. “It is not a drawing – it

is what is used to define success when the drawing begins.”

Conceptual drawings of the school should be completed in August.

The North STEM campus is funded by the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved by voters in May 2016. The schools will be open to all students, and will help alleviate overcrowding at North Fulton’s traditional high schools. A South STEM high school opens in 2021. “[The STEM high school] is dedicated to providing rigorous and relevant instruction focused on science, technology, engineering and math that will prepare students for college and careers,” said Burke.

While traditional high schools offer similar STEM instruction, the differential, noted Burke, is the STEM school will provide opportunities to connect students with “unique, authentic learning opportunities” tied to partnerships within the business community.

The layout of the school will be focused on labs, in addition to traditional classrooms, with flexible work spaces allowing for student collaboration and “huddle” areas for small group activities.

“We consistently heard the school envi-

ronment needed to feel like work environment,” said Burke. “These extended learning environments allow additional collaborative space where learning can spill out in a very organic way throughout the building.”

The school will encompass 243,000 square feet, including the auditorium, with a capacity of 1,500 students.

Unique concepts of the STEM school include looking at how media centers and the cafeteria can be fully in use throughout the day, eliminating “dead spaces.”

While the existing athletic fields will remain, their use will not be incorporated into the curriculum. The physical education facilities inside the school will be limited to a 6,000 square foot fitness center/weight room.

Similarly, space for music and visual arts will be much less than in traditional high schools, although the STEM campus will include about 15,000 square feet for the art and music offerings.

Burke said the overall design goal can be summarized in what student focus groups said was important.

“The whole idea is to come into this building and seeing the labs are front and center,” he noted. “You are going to

Trolley program permits easier travel to Historic District ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Trolley Pilot Program officially launched May 12 and allows visitors to navigate the city’s historic district more easily. The trolley runs Friday and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. through Aug. 5.

The city council recently approved the project to make movement through the Historic District easier during the busiest times of the week. People can now park at City Hall and catch the trolley to Canton Street and the Historic Town Square.

NF Chamber hosts heroin summit Leaders call for action to fight opioid addiction

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Only one thing brought North Fulton leaders, educators and law enforcement officers to the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce offices May 25 – heroin addiction in everyone’s own backyard.

Chamber President and CEO Brandon Beach told the some 60 people gathered that it was time for North Fulton County to confront the problem of opioid addiction head on.

“I have tried to stay in my lane and just look after business and transportation in this community,” Beach said.

“But in the last two years, my wife and I have seen our friends bury six of their children from ages 26 to 30.

“All of them died of heroin or opioid addiction. It is a cancer in our community that cannot be ignored.”

It is an issue that has been taken up by the community and it should be a plan of action that involves the community, he said.

The meeting was officially held

with the North Fulton Mayors Association, with mayors Mike Bodker (Johns Creek), Jere Wood (Roswell), Rusty Paul (Sandy Springs) and David Belle Isle (Alpharetta) in attendance and offering support.

Fulton Commissioner Liz Hausmann, whose day job is with the chamber, supported the effort to bring attention to North Fulton’s drug problem out in the open.

“And it is important to see it as a health issue. Give Bandon [Beach] credit for bringing these people together to look at this as more than crime. It’s young people dying, too,” Hausmann said.

Fulton County is redirecting resources to be more proactive in treating drug addiction as a health issue.

“It is about changing the mindset in treating addicts. We still have to go after drug pushers – they are peddling death. But we are looking at Behavior Health Services as a way to help people who need it,” Hausmann said.

Outsourcing those services will help, she said. It will allow the county to treat people holistically.

“We need new answers. Fulton County spends $14 million a year on health services just for the jail. We need

Alpharetta Public Safety Director John Robison said he would like to create permanent drop-off points for surplus prescription medicine.

“We periodically set up temporary sites to turn in drugs, but it is an ongoing issue that shouldn’t be that hard to do,” Robison said. “Everyone gets it that there is a problem, but we still have people out there that are clueless.”

Many of North Fulton’s heroin addicts get their start raiding their parents’ medicine cabinets for opioids lying around and unneeded.

Doctors still routinely overprescribe

opioids for various conditions, and research shows it is a primary source of opiates that starts the path to addiction – in both adults and teenagers.

Meanwhile, local police are doing two jobs. They carry the wonder drug Narcan that can resuscitate an opioid victim almost miraculously if they get to the victim in time.

On that end, the cities of North Fulton will see greater cooperation among the law enforcement departments and with Forsyth County.

“There is a triangle of drug abuse from Alpharetta to Forsyth to Johns Creek. There is no one demographic for an addict. We all fit the profile,” Robison said. “So we will be working closely together and share our resources.”

Synthetic opioids are here such as fentanyl. It is 50 to 100 times more potent than heroin. Many drug deaths are caused by addicts taking fentanyl when the think they are using heroin.

And there are more potent synthetics in the pipeline.

Beach said the meeting was only a beginning.

“We have six mayors here (in North Fulton). We can make things happen,” Beach said. “This was not the last meeting. It’s the first.”

Alpharetta OKs proposed Fuqua development Mixed-use plan will add office, retail, apartments

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA — After more than a month of negotiating details, city leaders approved a plan Monday that will allow a major mixed-use development on a 62-acre site at Lakeview Parkway and Haynes Bridge Road.

The City Council voted 6-1 to allow a change in the mix first approved for the property more than five years ago.

The major change is the addition of 276 apartment units on the site.

Applicants for the project, TPA Fuqua and Peridot, originally sought to build 320 high-end apartments into the mix of 488 residential units proposed. But city staff and members of the Planning Commission wanted the number of apartments lowered to 220.

Over the month since the proposal was first introduced at a public meeting in mid-April, Fuqua and the city met to reach a compromise.

During that time, the City Council has debated its stated goal of achieving a residential balance of 68 percent owned and 32 percent rented properties within the city.

Councilman Jim Gilvin, who cast the lone dissenting vote for the project, expressed frustration at the progression of apartment units over the past decade. He reiterated Monday that Alpharetta will never achieve its residential goal by allowing more apartments.

“We look at all these projects individually, and we look at the traffic studies,” he said. “Are you aware that if you go back and total all the projects that have been built or approved since 2010, once they’re all built, we’ll have added 100,000 cars to the roads here in Alpharetta?”

Kathryn Zickert, the attorney representing the development team, told

city officials that the developers had acceded to nearly all the conditions – more than 50 – recommended by city staff and the Planning Commission.

She also said that the process of winning approval for the development had been rigorous and, ultimately, had led to a better project in the long run.

When completed, the project will include: • 15,300 square feet of retail • 26,300 square feet of restaurants • 9,600 square feet for a market • 27,000 square feet for entertainment • 104,000 square feet for a 200key hotel The residential portion will include no more than 470 total dwelling units.

Of that total, there will be no more 276 apartments and a minimum of 48 stacked townhomes. The remaining 146 for sale units may be developed for townhomes, stacked flat condominiums, stacked townhome condominiums or single family zero lot line detached dwelling units.

In other business Monday, the City Council voted to table action on a proposed trolley service for the Alpharetta Downtown District.

Representatives from Alpharetta-based City Solutions presented a proposal that would provide two sixpassenger vehicles to traverse downtown lots offering shuttle service to shops and restaurants. The proposal comes one week after the City Council first introduced plans to study the idea and possibly offer it on a short-term basis while construction of City Center moves forward.

But at Monday night’s meeting, city leaders said they were not quite ready to act until details of funding and liability had been worked out.

Nearby Roswell just launched its own pilot program offering trolley service to visitors of its Historic District.

Here in Michigan, Georgia is a big deal I’m working from Lansing, Michigan, this week, the capital, next to the home of Sparty and host of the 2017 Odyssey of the Mind World Championships where my son’s team is competing. For being a capital city, Lansing is relatively small and very charming, filled with old brick buildings and split by the Grand River.

Geoff smith I drew the short straw and while Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com everyone else flew up here, I drove the Penske truck filled with the team’s set props for the competition. After driving 14 hours and drinking five or so Starbuck’s coffees, I was in no shape to go to the opening ceremonies, nor was I able to go to sleep. So I walked over to the bar across from the hotel and ended up having drinks with what seemed like half of Michigan’s House or Representatives. This bar is right across the street from the Capitol building. They were a very lively and very nice bunch.

And you know what? They love Georgia. When I told them where I was from, they all nodded in tones that showed envy of what we have in our state.

“Atlanta has it going on,” one told me. “There’s so much activity, so many colleges….oh, and jobs! So many jobs!”

It seemed almost every one of them had a cousin, or aunt, or nephew who lives in Atlanta. They all had some kind of a connection here. And they all seemed to look up to Georgia and Atlanta. It was kind of a shock to me. Growing up here, it always seemed like New York, California, Texas, and, yes, Michigan, were the big ones. They were the blue-bloods. And we, Georgia, were always the underdogs.

After this conversation though, my attitude is totally different. In this case, Georgia is what Michigan now wants to be.

The recent economic demise of Michigan, particularly Detroit, is very well documented. It was a city so heavily reliant on one industry that when the main auto manufactures sputtered to the point of near bankruptcy, the city itself filed bankruptcy. While we in Atlanta have seen a huge influx of new residents over the last five years, they have seen a huge decline. While we in Atlanta are running out of housing in certain markets, they are flush with them. I was told Detroit’s city limits are built to house over one million residents, but less than 700,000 actually live there. They are actually razing entire city blocks of homes to plant urban farms.

In Atlanta, we cannot build houses fast enough. In the under $400,000 market in Atlanta, we only have

two to three months of supply. If you do not know, that is incredibly low. A healthy market is six months of supply.

And this problem doesn’t look like it will go away any time too soon. According to Smart Real Estate Data, in several metro counties there were actually fewer building permits issued in the first quarter of this year than last year. Clayton, Cobb, Fayette, Gwinnett and Forsyth counties each saw more than a 6.8 percent drop in building permits issued. There are some serious headwinds blowing against the homebuilding industry in Atlanta. Buildable land is becoming scarce and land prices are rising quickly. But perhaps one of the biggest issues is finding skilled labor. The good news about our economy is that we are finally near full employment.

The bad news is that we need more skilled workers to build homes. Where are we going to get them? If we are at full employment, they will have to come from other industries.

None of these problems will go away quickly. We can expect inventory levels to stay low for some time. That said, our problems could be a lot worse.

I’m going to head back to the Michigan State campus. When I left my boys this morning, they were going nuts trying to find the Italian Odyssey team. They heard the Italians are the best pin-traders.

the community last year,” said Turner.

Milton creates valuable resource with business incubator Startups to partner with veteran entrepreneurs

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — A new incubator for small businesses is in the works for Milton that aims to grow and retain Milton-based startups. The incubator will allow entrepreneurs to take the leap toward growth and provide them with mentorship from seasoned business owners, work space and the possibility of capital.

Dubbed “The Engine,” the incubator is moving closer to fruition as five metro Atlanta entrepreneurs have signed on to the project to serve as mentors and potential investors in Milton-based businesses. A lease for office space along Deerfield Parkway is in the works to provide a site for startups.

Development manager, said The Engine has three purposes – keep entrepreneurs in Milton, have business owners share their knowledge with their fellow residents and to provide venture capital to grow those businesses.

LaDart said the project came about during a trip to Atlanta Tech Village where she spoke with a Milton resident who had made the trip south to be a part of the village’s innovation center.

She asked herself why would he be driving all that way and why can’t Milton cultivate and support that kind of system.

She presented the idea of a Milton-based incubator to Atlanta Tech Village co-founder and Milton resident David Lightburn, who supported the plan.

The Engine aims to bring the wealth of knowledge from Milton’s experienced entrepreneurs to local startups, some of which may otherwise be afraid to take the plunge, LaDart said.

“We have such a wealth of knowl-

edge and different experience and success that can be shared,” she said.

Startups and their mentors will work closely together at The Engine’s 4,800-square-foot office space along Morris Road near Windward Parkway in the Deerfield district, an area Milton has been working to grow as a business hub for the city. A lease is being finalized through a partnership with Banyan Street Capital, owners of Deerfield Corporate Center.

Entrepreneurs can rent desk or office space in the location “at a fair price,” LaDart said.

Nearly half of Milton’s business licenses are home-based businesses, and the space could open the door for those startups to grow.

She said the ability to rent a desk or office as compared to having to rent an entire space could help alleviate concerns of startups who fear taking the plunge.

“And you will be surrounded by others on the same path,” LaDart said.

Startups will eventually “graduate” from the program, and the incubator hopes to bring together investors and the budding businesses.

The Engine will specifically cater to Milton residents, but LaDart said they will not turn away great ideas just because someone is across the city lines. However, those going through the program will sign a non-legally binding agreement that they will agree to remain in Milton.

The city will manage the incubator, but the advisory board will run day-today operations and provide funding.

Though the project is through Milton, no taxpayer dollars will be used, LaDart said.

Local athletes compete in Special Olympics NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The Special K’s, a local agency of the Special Olympics based in North Fulton, competed at the 2017 State Summer Games at Emory University last weekend.

The Special K’s delegation included over 60 Olympians, partners and coaches. The athletes competed in cross country, soccer and swimming.

The Special K’s have represented North Fulton in competitions for over 20 years.

The agency thanks supporters Crossfit North Fulton and the Johns Creek Police Department for their contributions to The Special K’s.

Milton girl wins gold at gymnastics championships MILTON, Ga.— Lexie French, a 10-year-old from Milton, won three gold medals at the Level 6 Georgia State Gymnastics Championships and one gold medal at the Region 8 Gymnastics Championship in Mobile, Alabama.

At the Georgia state competition, French placed first in the balance beam and floor exercise with scores of

9.625. She also won the all-around title with a score of 37.875. Lexie’s performance qualified her to the regional competition where she again went on to win a gold medal for her performance on the floor exercise with a score of 9.60.

Lexie is the daughter of Mark and Lori French.

Milton performing arts school awarded at southeastern competition MILTON, Ga. — Milton’s Renaissance International School of Performing Arts (RISPA) won multiple awards at the Regional Access Broadway competition in Atlanta. Over 200 students from RISPA performed at the southeast region competition.

RISPA took home awards for Best Performing Arts School, Best Dance School and Best Choreographer in the southeast region.

RISPA students performed acts from Broadway plays including ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Hamilton,’ and were among the 500 performances from schools in the southeast region.

The students trained with school choreographers and instructors for months to perfect their 15 solo, duet, trio and group numbers.

In earning its trio of awards, RISPA is now qualified to compete in the Access Broadway National Competition July 10-16, 2017 in Orlando, Florida.

“The entire RISPA family is delighted to win these three prestigious awards,” Danny Louchiey, owner and director of RISPA, said. “It takes hard work and commitment from everyone involved.

The quality of each performance was outstanding and I am so proud of everyone.”

109,000 voters affected; move could impact June 20 runoff

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY – In a move that could affect the outcome of the 6th Congressional District runoff, the Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections announced last week that “due to unforeseen circumstances,” 12 North Fulton and Sandy Springs polling locations will not be available for the special runoff election June 20.

The areas affected contain some 109,000-plus voters.

Richard Barron, director of Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections said the changes are due to unforeseen circumstances particular to each polling station.

Charlie Harper, a spokesman for Republican Karen Handel’s campaign, said that there is no indication of “political shenanigans” in the polling changes.

“The reasons for the changes are valid. Many of these polling sites are schools. It’s just one of the things that puts the “special” in special elections,” Harper said. “It is just another burden to a summer election along with vacations and people getting out of town.”

That is why the Handel campaign is putting an emphasis on early voting that began May 31.

“We are advising our constituents to vote early and be done with it. But it is apparent that no one is trying to get an advantage with this,” Harper said.

Members from Democrat Jon Ossoff’s campaign did not respond in time for publication.

Meanwhile, voters can take advantage of early voting (see box).

The county is also mailing noti-

fication letters (by standard mail) to residents registered in the affected precincts.

Each affected eligible 6th Congressional District voter will also receive a new voter registration card. All concerned residents are urged to check online to find out if the changes will affect their poll on Election Day. “Unfortunately, we will have to move 12 polling locations for the upcoming run-off election,” said Barron.

“The locations will either be undergoing renovations or have scheduled events.

The timing of this election is causing us to make these changes.”

District 1 Commissioner Liz Hausmann (Johns Creek) said it is frustrating because many schools where precincts are located will be undergoing construction or renovations, and having voters show up to construction sites would not be advisable.

“We do have early voting starting, and my advice is that voters take advantage of that opportunity,” Hausmann said. “Summertime means many people will be out of town, but there are three weeks of early voting.

“Having a summer election creates issues. I understand that the Board of Education does not want to conduct elections during their construction period.”

The Fulton Elections Department mailed 109,296 notification letters May 22.

Polling location changes are posted on the department’s website, fultonelections.com.

“I strongly encourage residents to take a moment to verify if they are affected by the changes prior to Election Day,” said Barron.

Through soggy conditions, golf state champs crowned Johns Creek sweeps 6A, Lambert girls win fifth straight title

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Rain and soggy conditions persisted throughout the 2017 GHSA golf state championships, but it was anything but dreary for those capturing team and individual state titles May 22-23.

Class AAAAAAA girls – It took a playoff, but Lambert captured its fifth straight state championship at the Chateau Elan Legends course last Tuesday.

After two rounds, Lambert and Mill Creek were tied at 40 over par. The teams returned to the par-5 first hole where Lambert scored four pars, besting Mill Creek’s two pars, bogey and double bogey to capture the state title.

Alison Crenshaw and Kate Owens both shot a team-low 157 over the two rounds.

Roswell was led to a third place team finish behind a strong showing from Emily Haigwood, who shot 11 over par for the tournament. Haigwood competed at last year’s state championship as an individual competitor.

Nine strokes behind Roswell was South Forsyth in fourth, a six-spot jump up in the standings from last year’s 10th place finish.

Class AAAAAAA boys – Lambert’s boys team fell just short of a state championship, placing second for the second straight year. Lambert placed behind state champs Mill Creek, who extended their eight-stroke lead over Lambert after the first round to finish 17-strokes ahead of the Longhorns.

Lambert’s Grant Cutliff finished two strokes behind Peter Chung of Mill Creek for the individual title.

Two other Forsyth County teams placed in the top-five, with South Forsyth placing third and West finishing fourth.

West was the only team to finish in the top-five that shot lower in the second round. West improved by 10 strokes in round two.

Class AAAAAAA Area 3 champs Milton placed eighth in the state tournament. The Eagles were tied for fourth after the first round, but shot a 332, 18-strokes over their round one score, to drop in the field.

Johns Creek held a 3-stroke lead over Northview entering the second round. Both teams saw lower scores in round two, but Johns Creek ultimately prevailed, winning by five strokes.

The individual state title also pitted the Johns Creek area schools against one another as Johns Creek’s Amy Ng and Northview’s Christyn Carr were tied at 144 strokes after 36 holes.

In the playoff, Carr captured the individual state championship with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole.

After finishing as state runner up last season, Alpharetta placed seventh in this year’s state tournament led by Alejandra Ayala who tied for fifth in individual scores.

Tied with Ayala for fifth was Heather Kipniss of Cambridge. The Lady Bears placed eighth in team scores, 19 stokes ahead of ninth-place Valdosta.

Class AAAAAA boys – After the Johns Creek girls team captured its first state title, the boys team captured its second straight, completing a Class AAAAAA sweep for the school.

The Gladiators finished 3 over par, three strokes ahead of Creekview.

Cambridge, which beat Johns Creek in the playoff to capture the Area 3 championship, sat in second after the first round but dropped to fifth after the second round.

Centennial and Alpharetta had drastically lower scores in the second round of the tournament, but placed 14th and 16th, respectively.

Class AAAA girls – Rain washed out the second round of the AAAA state championship at Maple Ridge Golf Club in Columbus, forcing Blessed Trinity to settle for a fourth-place finish.

BT’s Hannah Jones tied for the individual state championship with a 2-over par 74. Jones finished as state runner up in last year’s state tournament.

The Lady Titans’ Sarah Leonard finished 10th at 9-over par.

Class AAAA boys – The boys AAAA tournament was also cut to a single

round due to rain. Blessed Trinity placed 10th in team scores with a 27over par 311.

Jeremy Smith finished tied for 24th overall in individual scores with a 5-over par 76 in the only round of the tournament.

A-Private girls – Mount Pisgah was seeking to capture its first state title after finishing as state runner up last year, but the Lady Patriots never got a second round to do so.

Rain washed out the second round at Green Island Country Club in Columbus. The Lady Patriots placed sixth with the deciding round one scores.

Leading Mount Pisgah was Morgan Sachs who shot an 18-over par 89 on the soaked course.

A-Private boys – Mount Pisgah’s boys also had just one round to score in the state tournament as rain forced the second round to be cancelled. The Patriots finished 10th in team scores.

Dasinger steps down at Alpharetta after one season Coach accepts position To be closer to family

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Jason Dasinger has stepped down from his position as head boys basketball coach at Alpharetta after one season, citing family reasons for his decision.

A Woodstock-native, Dasinger will take over as Etowah’s head coach after former Etowah head coach Allan Whitehart resigned to take over the same position at Milton.

Dasinger said he took the Etowah

job due to the close proximity to his home which will allow him to spend more time with his wife and young children.

“That’s the singular reason,” Dasinger said.

“I can be a better husband and father now Dasinger that I’m closer.”

He said the time and travel commitment of his head coaching job, plus the effort to be a part of the Alpharetta community by staying to watch other sports, cut into his family time.

The most difficult part of the process was telling his team after he had emphasized building relationship all

season.

“All I remember from that year is the relationships,” he said. “I think the kids played really hard because they knew how much our coaching staff cared about them.”

Alpharetta basketball will be fine without him, he said, but he hates to leave.

“I’m not going to coach them next year, but I’m going to be their biggest fan,” Dasinger said.

Alpharetta went 10-18 in its season prior to Dasinger’s arrival. Under Dasinger, the Raiders compiled a 25-4 overall record, earning Dasinger Region 7-AAAAAA Coach of the Year honors.

The Raiders started the season 23-1 before dropping crucial late-sea-

son games in the region tournament and state playoffs.

Alpharetta lost to Dunwoody in the semifinals and fell to Tri-Cities, 60-57, in the first round of the state playoffs.

Blessed Trinity falls in state championship to region rivals Marist comes back to win deciding Game 3

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROME, Ga. — Making its fourth straight state championship appearance, Blessed Trinity baseball fell to region foes Marist in three games last week in the Class AAAA state championship series. Marist claimed its 13th baseball state championship while denying BT its fourth.

The state title series loss was BT’s second straight after capturing the state title in 2014 and 2015.

The Titans had no troubles in Game 1, dominating the Eagles 11-1 in a game that ended after the bottom of the fifth on a run-rule.

Colin Davis and Jake Lundkovsky each batted 3-3 with Lundkovsky driving in four runs. Mitchell Weidner also hit a home run in the win that saw BT light up Marist for six runs in the top of the fifth.

Peyton Glavine threw a complete game for the Titans, allowing five hits and one earned run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Game 1 appeared to be a continuation of the two teams’ series in the regular season. Blessed Trinity swept Marist, 7-2, 9-4 and 4-0 on its way to claiming the region title. However, Games 2 and 3 would see BT’s dominance over the War Eagles end.

score his brother, Ryan. Lundkovsky followed that double with one of his own, scoring Davis to put the Titans up 2-0 early.

But those would be the last runs of the game for the Titans.

Marist loaded the bases in the top of the third against BT starter Patrick McNamee, who gave up two singles and a walk. A BT error on an infield grounder

scored one run and was followed by another single to tie the game at 2-2.

With the bases still loaded, Marist hit a basesclearing triple before adding another run to go up 6-2.

Blessed Trinity stranded six runners in the next four innings, as Marist added an insurance run to take Game 2, 7-2, forcing a decisive Game 3 Saturday.

In that decisive game, BT stranded six runners, which proved to be a critical blow in Marist’s 4-3 win.

BT opened the scoring once again, going up 3-0 after Cole McNamee hit a two-run double in the top of the second and added another run in the top of the third.

Marist responded in the bottom of the third as the Titans, with one of the top pitching staffs in the state, struggled on the mound.

McNamee walked two batters, gave up two singles and hit a batter to allow Marist to tie the game.

Alpharetta, Roswell parks gain national acclaim Both departments competing as Gold Medal finalists in separate categories

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Out of all of the parks and recreation departments across the United States, the cities of Alpharetta and Roswell continue to be a cut above the rest.

Both cities have been singled out as finalists for the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. This honor is distributed yearly by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.

Founded in 1965, the awards program recognizes excellence in longrange planning, resource management and program development. Volunteerism, environmental stewardship and professional development are also considered.

Roswell is no stranger to this distinction. This is the seventh consecutive year that its Recreation, Parks, Historic & Cultural Affairs Department is in the running.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be in among the ‘Gold Medal’ finalists once again,” said Jeff Pruitt, deputy director of the City’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department.

“We are so thankful for the continued support of the Recreation Commission,

Gold Medal Awards are given to seven different classes, one for armed forces recreation, one for state park

systems and five based on population size. Roswell is one of four cities in the Class III section for a population size between 75,001-150,000. They will be facing off against departments in Ar-

lington Heights, Ill.; Evanston, Ill., and Mountain View, Calif., this summer.

“Each day, we try to go above and beyond to offer the best recreational experiences to our residents and visitors,” Pruitt said. “This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff.”

Alpharetta’s Recreation and Parks Department was likewise recognized as a finalist, but for a separate category than Roswell.

Although this is the first time that Alpharetta has received this distinction, the city has an award-winning history.

The Alpharetta department has been selected eight times as the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s Agency of the Year.

This year, Alpharetta was named in Class IV of the Gold Medal award for a population between 30,001-75,000, along with Bismark, N.D., Lombard, Ill., and Wheat Ridge, Col. “Folks in our city understand the value and benefits of recreation and parks, both in their personal lives and to our community as a whole,” said Department Director Morgan Rodgers.

“Alpharetta is consistently named as a desirable place to live, work, retire and play, and the commitment of our recreation and parks department is one of the driving factors of this success.”

Rodgers recently joined the Alpharetta department this April after working with Roswell’s department for 25 years, the last three as director. Roswell is still seeking a replacement.

Each category will be narrowed down to one city, who will be named Grand Plaque Award honors this summer. The seven Grand Plaque recipients will be publically announced Sept.

26-28 during the 2017 NRPA Annual Conference in New Orleans, La.

King’s Ridge club joins with Meals by Grace MILTON, Ga. — The Interact Club at King’s Ridge Christian School recently teamed up with Meals by Grace to provide meals for North Fulton families.

They put together more than three weeks’ worth of meals for families in need in the North Fulton area.

Meals by Grace is a program of The Bridge and is a nonprofit ministry focused on providing food support through multiple programs to children and families in need.

The families are recommended to

the program by school social workers, childcare center directors and poverty trained counselors.

The Interact Club at King’s Ridge, led by Cambri Driskell, decided to work with Meals by Grace and focus on serving families in need in the North Fulton area.

Driskell said, “As the head of the first King’s Ridge Interact Club, I look forward to carrying out many more projects like this next year with the club’s members and with the entire school.”

Milton’s Memorial Day remembers the fallen

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. – Some 300 Milton residents came to remember American military servicemen and woman who, as Lincoln phrased it, paid the last full measure of devotion.

Memorial Day in Milton, May 29, began with a flourish as daredevil parachutist Lt. Christian Stevens brought a streaming American flag from one mile up to the ground.

Georgia House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones opened the ceremony, recalling her father, a career military man, and four uncles, all World War II veterans.

Jones especially recalled the eldest of the four brothers as the one who did not come home to “till the fertile fields of middle Georgia.”

Retired Lt. Col. Cary King, now an Atlanta attorney, gave a moving account of three men he commanded in Charlie Battery, part of the 175-man command. They were the three who died at their posts during the Tet Offensive in 1968 Vietnam.

The memorial service concluded with the reading of the 512 names listed on markers that line Milton streets for the Memorial Day remembrance. They are the names of Milton residents who served in the armed forces, some to return and some who did not.

Georgia SPCA celebrates 10,000th pet adoption Nonprofit also celebrating 10 years

On May 17, the nonprofit reached the milestone of placing its 10,000th animal during its 10th year of operation.

“It’s remarkable to see the support we receive for the animals,” said Executive Director Jacki McDonald.

“More and more people are choosing to adopt rescue animals. Year over year we’re seeing tremendous growth in all facets of our operations and our need for donations.”

The 10,000th animal is a kitten that was named Carmel and now goes by the name Mowgli, and was adopted

by Mark and Vicki Grizzard of Lawrenceville.

“This invigorated our staff and volunteers,” McDonald said. “This gives us a chance to kick off saving the next 10,000 as our work is never done.

There are so many lives to save.”

McDonald said this is a major accomplishment in itself, but it means even more considering Georgia has one of the highest animal kill rates in the country. Every year, 27 percent of homeless dogs and cats get euthanized in the metro Atlanta area, she said.

“This shows we are making an impact on getting those animals into happy environments from where they came from.”

“We’ll be doing more off-site adoptions and education opportunities,” McDaniel said. “This has invigorated us to be out in the community and say, ‘we found 10,000 pets a perfect home and can find one for you as well.’”

Local resident turns 104 years old Walter Carmack reflects on life’s changes through the decades

By NATASHA ROY news@appenmedagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — On July 8, Cumming resident Walter Carmack will turn 104-years-old.

Born in Boudin, Virginia in 1913, Carmack lived in several different states — including Tennessee and Florida — before eventually moving to Georgia.

Carmack spent 70 years in Tennessee and moved to Cumming nearly three years ago to live with his daughter, Pat Vicknair, following the death of his second wife. He said his favorite part about living in Georgia is the people.

Carmack has seen many generational changes throughout his lifetime.

His childhood was different than the childhoods of children growing up today. Carmack would often drive his mother and grandmother to go shopping at an early age.

“During my childhood, you did pretty much what you wanted to,” Carmack said. “I started driving when I was 8 years old. You didn’t have to have driver’s licenses. I didn’t get a driver’s license until I came back from the Army.”

He joined the Army when he was 18. He did not serve in World War I or II, but he was stationed in Hawaii from 1931 to 1934.

“It was back during the Depression,” Carmack said. “There weren’t many jobs out anyways, so I just [joined] the Army.”

Vicknair said that during his time in the Army, Carmack was a boxing champion in Honolulu. He was also able to see much of Hawaii while he was serving in the Army.

“I traveled a pretty good bit,” Carmack said. “Not too much in the states — it was all in Hawaii.”

Since serving in the Army, Carmack has married twice.He now has a large family, including four children, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, and he is very close to both his blood-related family and stepfamily.

While his life motto is to simply enjoy life, Vicknair said that Carmack has always carried around a saying in his wallet. “’I shall pass through this world but once,’” the saying reads. “’Any good therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.’”

Vicknair now has a cross-stitching of this saying in their home.

“He’s always helped other people,” Vicknair said. “So he’s lived by it.”

Carmack is grounded in his Christian faith. Vicknair said that he always acted as a deacon or an elder in the church.

Now, Carmack spends his days with his daughter relaxing, eating and watching his favorite game shows on television.

“I have a good life,” Carmack said.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Johns Creek resident Rayen Kang, 17, a rising senior at Northview High School, has established herself at a young age as an excellent wildlife painter.

For the second year in a row, Kang has been judged as having Georgia’s Best in Show in the annual Georgia Junior Duck Stamp Art Competition.

The contest was held April 11 at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta. Kang won based on her acrylic painting of the American wigeon, a marsh duck indigenous to the Northwest and western Canada.

Kang trains as a painter two hours a week at the First Fine Art & Design Studio in Johns Creek with her art teacher Zhi Qu. She said she chose to paint the American wigeon because its coloring interested her.

She typically spends about 12 to 16 hours on her paintings. She began her work on the duck in mid-January to meet the early March deadline.

“I was flipping through some books and saw it. I liked the green coloring around its neck and the white on its head,” Kagan said.

This duck was once known as “Baldpate” because of its white crown.

It is the second time the wildlife artist has won the coveted award from the U.S. Wildlife Federation.

A panel of five judges was selected for their expertise in artistic design, wildlife art and waterfowl biology. They unanimously selected her acrylic interpretation of an American wigeon as the Georgia Best of Show from among 574 submissions.

Kang received a $175 scholarship from Georgia Power, sponsor of the Georgia Junior Duck Stamp Program.

And as Georgia’s Best of Show, Kang’s original artwork competed in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest in Charleston, South Carolina.

Her work was ranked seventh among the submissions from 50 states plus American territories.

Kang said she does not plan to pursue art as a career.

“But I would like to incorporate the science and the arts, like industrial design or something like that,” she said.

Kang has been “doing art” since her elementary school days. But she doesn’t concentrate on wildlife.

“I draw a variety of stuff – faces, landscapes – as well as wildlife,” she said. “I concentrate on wildlife for the contest.”

This year, she thought her wigeon was an improvement over last year’s painting of two hooded merganser ducks.

“Last year, I couldn’t get the water right. It just didn’t hold the duck. This year, I got the swirling better. It was an improvement,” Kang said.

The pert teenager said she would enter the contest again.

“I have been looking at geese for next year. I guess it’s the old ‘duck, duck, goose’ thing. The contest is for water fowl,” Kang said.
