Fake closing attorney takes buyer for $15,000 ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman in the process of purchasing a house was scammed out of $15,000 May 22 by a suspect impersonated a closing attorney.

The woman said she had received a call from someone claiming to be the closing attorney confirming the date and time for closing on the house. The caller then said she’d email instructions for wiring the money. An hour later, the woman received the mail and followed instructions to wire $15,000 to an unknown account for someone living in Illinois.

The woman later became suspicious of the interaction and contacted police.

When police contacted the real closing attorney, she said that she had never spoken to the woman about a wire transfer. The company, she added, only conducts transfers through their website.

behind three children between them.

The couple was found at 8 p.m. after Georgia Department of Natural Resources rangers were called to do a welfare check on a 24-foot Bayliner cabin cruiser boat.

The couple had failed to make contact with their family. The rangers located the boat anchored off the Three Sisters Island chain within Forsyth County.

After failing to make contact with the couple, the rangers boarded the boat and found the two deceased in the front cabin area. The cause of death is believed to be carbon monoxide positioning, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Nothing is definitive until the autopsy is completed. The case is still under investigation. Foul play is not suspected.

“Walter” said that he would see what he could do and hung up.

The woman tried “many times” since to reach “Walter” again to check on her grandson, but the phone service was always busy or the voicemail was full.

The woman’s daughter convinced her it was a scam and to contact police.

Grandmother loses $18,000 Grandmother loses $4,200 to grandson impersonator in fake arrest scam ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman contacted police May 29 after her daughter helped her realize that she had been scammed out of $18,000.

On May 23, the woman received a phone call from someone claiming to be her grandson. He said that he was locked up in downtown Atlanta for a DUI. While she was speaking to the man, another man, who called himself “Walter,” came on the phone claiming that he could help her grandson if she sent $8,000 to bail him out.

The woman said that she was so convinced by the story that she agreed to send cash inside a FedEx shipping envelope overnight to a man in Florida.

Two days later, the woman received another call from “Walter” who said that he had more bad news related to her grandson. He said that he would need another $9,500 because her grandson had apparently broken another man’s nose and ribs. The woman complied with the request. That same day, “Walter” called the woman again and said that he would need an additional $6,000. But this time, the woman said that she could not afford to pay any more fees.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman was swindled out of $4,200 when she was convinced by callers that her granddaughter had been arrested after a car crash and needed help.

The woman said that at 9 a.m. on May 16, she received a phone call from a woman claiming to be her granddaughter.

The caller said that she had been in a car cash, was arrested and needed help. She then passed the phone to a man who said he was a lawyer assisting her. The fake lawyer convinced the woman to buy six $700 gift cards from Sam’s Club and read off the numbers to him. After the woman did so, she was once again contacted by a different man who said he belonged to a law firm representing her granddaughter and that she needed to purchase another $3,000 in gift cards. This time, the woman did not comply and instead called her granddaughter to see whether she had been in an accident. She had not.

The woman called Sam’s Club about the incident, but employees told her that there was nothing they could do at that point. She contacted police to file a report.

Milton’s development director retires

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. — A longstanding member of Milton’s city staff recently announced her retirement after serving the city for more than six years. Kathy Field, community development director, retired May 25.

In her role, Field oversaw all aspects of development within the city, including planning, zoning, design review and permits for land disturbance and building.

She also served as a lifeline for developers with questions on the city’s codes and ordinances and worked directly with the City Council, Planning Commis-

sion, Board of Zoning Appeals, Design Review Board and Historic Preservation Commission.

“Kathy Field helped shape the city of Milton,” said City Manager Steve Krokoff. “She is a true visionary whose FIELD planning expertise has been the foundation of some of the most creative city planning from the Atlanta Metro to the Northeast. We were fortunate to attract someone of [Field]’s caliber and she will be sorely missed.”

In a feature interview with the Her-

ald in 2017, Field said one of the most important aspects of her role was to provide expertise and professional advice that helped ensure informed decisionmaking by the city’s elected officials and then implement the policies they set forth.

“Other equally important aspects of my position include making sure that good planning principles are utilized and facilitating community input that can be utilized by the City Council for policymaking purposes,” Field added.

Field began her tenure in 2011 and brought a bevy of experience to Milton, a city still breaking out of its infancy after incorporating in 2006.

She held similar positions in Newburyport, Mass., and Providence, R.I. before moving to Georgia in 2000. She then worked with the cities of McDonough and Roswell.

Field was also an active member in the community, serving as chair of Senior Services North Fulton and with the Johns Creek Community Association.

In her absence, Carter Lucas, director of public works, will serve as the community development director until a replacement is hired. According to the city, Milton is conducting a national search with assistance from a professional executive search firm.

New community prosecutor targets drug epidemic

By CONNER EVANS interns@appenmediagroup. com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Fulton County Tag Office hosted a meet and greet May 30 to introduce Bailey Rogers, the new Fulton County commuROGERS nity prosecutor.

Rogers has worked as a criminal prosecutor for more than 10 years in Atlanta, where she focused on the opioid epidemic and gang activity in the community.

Rogers works with local police officers, helping them build cases, coordinate jurisdictions and build relationships between “white collars” in the

District Attorney’s office and uniformed officers on the ground.

But she said that there are some common misconceptions about her position.

“I’ve had people call me after getting arrested and ask me to represent them,” she said. “Some people don’t get that I’m not a free attorney — I’m a community prosecutor.”

One way Rogers is trying to combat the opioid epidemic is by providing officers with Narcan pens that can save individuals who overdosed.

The statistics on opioid use are tough to track, she said, because even while overdose rates are decreasing, Narcan use has increased.

And precise numbers for Narcan use and sales can be difficult to find because they are now sold over the counter. Rog-

Although people tend to think of drug problems as isolated to Atlanta, drug operations can happen even in the affluent suburbs of Roswell or Alpharetta. And opioids in particular have become such a problem in the area that large portions of North Fulton have become known as the “Heroin Triangle.”

But those are not the only kinds of drugs making their way into the suburbs.

Just recently, a mother in Sandy Springs was arrested for making THC pens in her home, Rogers said. She was only discovered because her child called the police.

Several other officials from the district attorney’s office at the meet and greet shared similar goals as Rogers in trust-building to help prevent gang activity.

mar, who joined the office in 2012, said he works to build trust between law enforcement and teenagers by talking with students at local high schools and middle schools.

“When I was younger I might have said ‘eff the police,’” he said. “But now, I can’t say that after being behind the scenes. No matter what you see on the news with cops, that’s really just one guy out of a lot. There’s going to be bad guys anywhere.”

Ian Elmore-Moore, who previously worked at a mentorship program and now works as a gang prevention and intervention coordinator for Atlanta, said that work with the youth has been incredibly rewarding.

“Getting a million dollar grant is really big for these programs,” he said.

“Helping 20 kids at a mentor program is still great, but there’s more I can do here even if it’s less hands-on.”

Local high school sports: Why I need a vacation I believe there is no better area in the state to be a high school sports journalist than North Fulton and Forsyth County. Unless you are a lazy sports journalist, that is.

In this area, you JOE PARKER can expect so many Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com great games each week your head will spin. You can expect that the first round of the playoffs will contain more teams than you can count, and you are nearly guaranteed that a local team will be in state championship contention in every sport.

Flip through this publication and

you will find an article highlighting the 2017-18 season for North Fulton and Forsyth County programs. Local teams captured 19 state championships, 12 state runner-up titles, and 25 athletes won individual state titles in swim and dive, track and field and wrestling.

It is a truly remarkable area to cover, with standout athletes, sharp coaches and strong fan support at every school in nearly every sport.

And, it is a very tiring area to cover.

The season starts in July as we ramp up for the start of football, softball and volleyball season. Those sports are still going strong when basketball, wrestling and swim and dive begin. Then comes the busiest time of year. With winter sports still wrapping up, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, golf, tennis and track and

field all kick off. And as stated earlier, you can expect at least one, but more often than not many, teams making deep playoff runs on their way to the state finals.

Though sports overlap constantly throughout the year, I understand the GHSA schedule is about as good as it can be. But if I could make a suggestion, perhaps the implementation of a mid-year “sports journalist” week where no sports are played to help us keep our sanity.

That said, I still look forward to game day. Having attended hundreds of local games, I still get excited when two teams are duking it out and exchanging blows.

Chills still descend my spine whenever the crowd roars in celebration. I feel the adrenaline surge when the band and drumline fire up the crowd. And the smell of hamburgers grilling and buttery popcorn almost provide an olfactory home away from home.

I truly love what I do, but I will also enjoy the summer months.

When schools are out of session, I can finally relax a little bit. There are no more Friday night football games to attend, then hurry home and have the article and a recap of all other local games on our website. There are no more baseball doubleheaders, volleyball

Roswell Police share summer safety tips

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Summer is heating up, but that’s no reason to relax your guard, police say.

Representatives from the Roswell Police Department met May 31 with Roswell Rotary Club members to give an update on their department and provide summer safety tips for residents, whether at home or out of town.

Summer tends to be the time that people go on vacation and let their guards down, but that doesn’t mean that crime takes a break, police said.

Several types of scams become more prominent during the summer months, according to Officer Sam Wolfson.

Some of the biggest scams people report in Roswell are related to fraud.

The department has seen several cases where someone receives a call from a suspect claiming to be an agent with a police department, IRS or other government agency, often threatening the victim with arrest if they do not pay them money.

The suspect will frequently ask for money to be sent through prepaid cards, such as Green Dot cards or iTunes gift cards.

Police and other such agencies will never ask for any sort of fee to be paid in

such a manner, Wolfson said.

Scammers also frequently impersonate a loved one and claim that they need money to get out of jail or some other sticky situation. It’s not uncommon for the scammers to research the victim’s family through Facebook or other social media sites to obtain information that sounds legitimate, Wolfson warned.

People might also encounter contract or repair scams, especially after hazardous weather, where the scammer will ask for money upfront or offer cheap services but will not deliver.

Be wary of such situations, research any potential contractor and protect yourself with a contract, Wolfson said.

The City of Roswell requires any solicitors to have a permit from the city and show the permit prominently when going door-to-door. Some groups such as Girl Scouts and campaign volunteers are exempt.

When in doubt about suspicious activity, from strange solicitors to an unknown vehicle circling the neighborhood at an odd hour, call the police, Wolfson said.

He also provided several tips for vacationers to protect themselves and their house while they are gone.

Local hero honored by state, city Local resident Ken Kraus was also honored at the Rotary Club meeting for his service to the country and the city. “[Kraus] is extremely well respected,” said Rotarian Roger Wise. “You mention his name in any of the annals of law enforcement, and they know who you’re talking about.”

Kraus previously served as a United States Marine. In 1979, when he was 22, Kraus was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Tehran when it was attacked, and Kraus was taken hostage by Iranian militants. He was tortured and sentenced to death before his release was secured.

Kraus later on went to serve over 20 years with the City of Roswell Police Department as a crime scene investigator while vacationing, avoid wearing flashy clothing that might make you a target for robbery, checking hotel reviews and alerting your bank before traveling.

Reeves wins 5th term Cambridge High School on Fulton School Board receives SkillsUSA honor

NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Katie Reeves will retain her long-held seat on the Fulton County Board of Education, after fending off a challenge from retired teacher Tom Pemble for the District 1 seat.

First elected in 1999, Reeves will be sworn in for her 5th four-year term on Dec. 31. Pemble, who serves on the Milton High School Governance Council, ran a strong campaign, picking up much of his support in the Milton area. His platform of smaller school sizes, school security and support for teachers resonated with many voters.

But in the end, Reeves won easily – garnering 5,000 of the nearly 8,500 votes cast. She credited her victory to a long record of fiscal responsibility and a student-first focus.

“I think any time you win by almost 20 points, you are surprised and pleased,” said Reeves. “I am very honored to be representing this community for four more years.”

She noted the issues of smaller class sizes and safety in schools, which Pemble campaigned on, are issues the board has

been focusing its attention and budget on for years as the economy recovers.

Reeves said the conversations around these topics throughout the campaign will help direct her focus while at the board table.

“The input from the community during this campaign has given me great insight into what this community supports,” said Reeves.

As far as attracting the best teachers, Reeves said it starts with the community and what it can offer teachers beyond the classroom.

“My focus has always been that we are most accountable to our parents and taxpayers,” said Reeves. “If we are serving those stakeholders well, we will put students first, and create a system that attracts the best and brightest.”

In a message to his supporters following the election, Pemble said a “sleeping giant” has been awakened in the community with a resolve to improve the schools.

“I know that the amazing people I have met throughout my campaign can and will accomplish these changes and that together you can do more than any single person could have,” Pemble said.

North Fulton library hosts new grant, scholarship resource

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Finding scholarships and grants in North Fulton just got a little easier thanks to a new database located in the Roswell Library.

Roswell Library has brought the Funding Information Network from the Foundation Center to North Fulton with the help of Mary Lyons, grants coordinator for the City of Roswell, Danny Blitch, grants manager for the City of Roswell, and the Friends of the Roswell Library.

The network brings together libraries, community foundations and other nonprofit resource centers across the world all into one searchable location.

And while it is mainly geared toward nonprofit use, everyone can benefit.

It can be an invaluable tool for local nonprofits searching for grants as well as for students and parents looking for scholarship opportunities or research grants, Lyons said.

The database houses information about nonprofit resources and community foundations across the nation.

Searches can customize in a variety of ways, including by demographics, types of grants, who is being funded and how

organizations are being funded.

“Our hope is to serve or even overserve our local community,” Blitch said.

“We all are serving the same group of people: Roswell residents. The idea is that the more services that we provide as a group to all of the nonprofits and the city together, we’re elevating everyone. It makes it better for everyone.”

There are over 400 Funding Information Network locations in the world, but the closest one to North Fulton had previously been in downtown Atlanta.

The distance, combined with traffic and parking costs, made the network difficult to access for many North Fulton nonprofits.

And without the ability to find grants, a local nonprofit may stagnate or disappear altogether.

“When people heard that it was coming to this area and that we were bringing training, it was a very big deal,” Lyons said. “This is probably one of the most significant things we have ever done.”

Not everyone can apply to bring the Funding Information Network to their location. The Foundation Center first wants to ensure that the area has a need as well as the capacity to house the network and training. The Roswell Library

“It’s a comprehensive partnership with the Foundation Center,” Lyons said. “They’re going to try to run continuous training. Previously, we held training through the city with the Nonprofit Partnership Program.”

But this new partnership with the Foundation Center brings the information and training to everyone, Blitch added.

The network will be available to anyone for free during regular library hours.

There will be trained library staff that can assist, and the library plans to hold regular informational workshops on the network.

When the Roswell Library closes in the fall for scheduled renovations, the database will temporarily be moved to the East Roswell Library for continual access.

Another championship year for local schools Local teams capture 19 state titles, 25 individual championships

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The 2017-18 GHSA athletics season marked another remarkable year for local athletics and ensured North Fulton and Forsyth County retain their status as a state hotbed for athletics.

During the year, 19 local teams won state championships and 12 finished as state runner up. In addition, 25 athletes won individual state titles in wrestling, track and field and swim and dive.

The titles continue an impressive streak for the area. A North Fulton school has won a state championship in at least one sport every year since 1995.

Forsyth County has earned at least one state title since 2011.

With the wide range of spring sports ending in May, it is no surprise that the month saw an influx of state titles to the area. Over half of the area’s team state championships were captured last month.

In soccer, six local teams earned berths in the state championships, with

the Alpharetta girls and Chattahoochee and Lambert boys winning titles in their respective classifications. Lambert downed crosstown rivals South Forsyth in 7A finals, and Chattahoochee beat fellow North Fulton team Cambridge in the 6A title game.

This year marks the most state soccer titles won by North Fulton and Forsyth County teams. Previously, only the 2012 Lambert boys and Milton girls had won titles in the same year.

Just a week after the soccer finals, five local teams battled for lacrosse state titles.

Blessed Trinity earned the Class A-5A sweep with their boys and girls crowned state champs. For the girls, it was their third straight and the boys’ first in program history.

Lambert met Lassiter for the third straight year in the Class 6A/7A boys finals. Lambert completed its undefeated (22-0) season to capture the title, their fourth since 2011.

The Milton girls continued their dominance over the entire state, winning their 12th state championship in

Since the GHSA recognized lacrosse as a state championship sport in 2005, local teams have won 24 state titles.

Also in May, Johns Creek area schools continued their dominance in golf.

The Johns Creek boys team captured its third straight state championship on May 22. The Northview and Johns Creek girls finished as state champion and runner-up for the second straight year, with the 2018 title going to the Titans.

While the Johns Creek boys continued their run of titles, Lambert girls golf saw its impressive streak come to an end. The Longhorns fell short of their sixth-straight state title this year, placing third in Class 7A. For the second consecutive year, a Forsyth County boys tennis team lifted a state title trophy with South Forsyth winning its program’s first championship. The Johns Creek boys and North-

view girls also won 6A titles. In all, 13 local tennis teams made berths in the quarterfinals.

In track and field, the Alpharetta boys fell just short of giving North Fulton its first team state championship since Roswell’s in 1961. However, 11 individual state championships were won from athletes representing Milton, North Forsyth, West Forsyth, Roswell, Alpharetta, Centennial, Johns Creek and Mount Pisgah. Kai Williams of Mount Pisgah captured three titles in the 100 and 200-meters and long jump.

In other spring sports, local schools were denied baseball state championship rings but Alpharetta and Blessed Trinity reached the semifinals.

Despite five teams earning football state championship berths in 2015 and 2016, North Fulton teams went without a state title. That losing streak came to an end this season with Blessed Trinity winning its program’s first championship over region rivals Marist.

It was the first locally won title since Chattahoochee’s in 2010 and just the fifth for all local programs.

Developer withdraws residential plan for North Point

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. — Plans to bring high-density residential housing to a 12-acre site at North Point Parkway and Kimball Bridge Road fell through May 21 after Alpharetta officials tacked on conditions that backers found untenable.

The applicant, 1699 Land Company, pulled their request after more than 90 minutes of deliberation with the four members of the City Council. The developer had sought approval to change the site’s land use from “corporate-office” to “high-density residential” in order to build 56 single-family homes on the property.

The City Council action – or inaction – was the last major zoning case the four-member council will consider before a new mayor and two more council members join their ranks following the May 22 municipal election.

It also represents a growing attitude among city leaders to question recent growth in high-density residential developments – one of the key campaign topics in this year’s local election.

Plans to develop the site have been in the works for close to three years, and, at varying times, have included town homes and as many as 90-some dwellings. The latest proposal represented months of negotiations between 1699 Land Company and city staff to work out details of a development that could meet recommendations to revive the North Point area.

Just this year, the city adopted a new blueprint for future development of North Point which calls for some highdensity residential. That document was drawn up through a Livable Centers Initiative, a grant program through the Atlanta Regional Commission that in-

centivizes local jurisdictions to reshape communities into vibrant, walkable places that provide increased mobility and access to work and amenities.

The new North Point LCI plan differs from the citywide Comprehensive Land Use Plan which designates North Point primarily for commercial and office use.

Attorney Don Rolader, representing the developer, argued that the LCI plan should take precedence. He said the proposed development could accommodate a nearby workforce, providing housing at reasonable costs.

Moreover, he said the project would help alleviate future traffic problems by reducing the number of daily car trips by more than 80 percent compared to a major commercial-office project which could occupy the site in the future.

About a dozen residents were at the meeting to monitor the outcome.

A handful of them addressed the City Council, all expressing misgivings about high-density residential in the area.

Al Modglin, representing the nearby Kimball Farms homeowners association, asked that the application be deferred because residents hadn’t had time enough to study its ramifications for the area. He said he hadn’t learned of the latest rezoning request until mid-April, and some residents were still in the dark as to the details.

When it came time for a decision, City Council members began introducing conditions on the development, changing the width of buffers, calling for pavers along an alleyway, restricting satellite dishes behind homes along Kimball Bridge Road.

In the end, none of the conditions were adopted or even debated.

Rolader ended the discussion by announcing that the developer was withdrawing the request.

The two-story, 40,000-square-foot facility is expected to see over 80,000 outpatient procedures and patient visits in the North Fulton area its first full year of operation. It is expected to create 5075 new jobs.

The total cost of the project is approximately $15 million, and its completion is scheduled for summer 2019.

“WellStar North Fulton Hospital has been a fixture in this community for years,” said Jon-Paul Croom, WellStar senior vice president and president of WellStar North Fulton Hospital. “The opening of the WellStar Avalon Health Park creates a wonderful opportunity for patients and consumers to experience the high-quality care they have come to expect at the hospital in an outpatient setting.”

WellStar is one of the largest health systems in Georgia and includes 240 medical office locations and 11 hospitals.

A summer of leisure, or not of leisure – that is the question If the sticks in the backyard outlining our future pea-gravel walkway are any indication, there could be some incoming turbulence in my summer of leisure.

My wife is an GEOFF SMITH art teacher, which Assurance Financial, means she is very gsmith@lendtheway.com creative. But she is also very industrious. Her last workday before summer break was May 29.

When I got home from work on May 30, I saw new mulch, a re-arranged back porch, an organized garage, a new spreadsheet up on the computer detailing the boys’ summer camps, and those rows of sticks going from the stairs of the back deck to the gate in the fence.

Our boys are typically knee-deep in activities. At one point we realized that our oldest boy was in six different after-school activities — he kept asking, and we kept signing him up. We’ve since capped him at four.

The school year claims most weeknights and weekends, leaving a scant evening or Sunday afternoon where we stare at each other and wonder what to do with all the free time. It’s kind of like clinging to a bullet-train where you have a vague idea where it’s going, but you’re doing everything you can to make sure you stay on-board and in as orderly a fashion as is possible. Then finally the train slams to a stop, and that’s called summer.

All of a sudden, weeknights and weekends are wide open. Last summer was our first in our new house, which we bought as a fixer-upper. So I spent sun-up on Saturday to sundown on Sunday fixing it up. After a summer like that, I was looking forward to getting off that train this year and setting up shop in fun-land. In fact, I was so proud of the work I did last year that I declared out loud that this would be

my summer of leisure. I have dreams of hanging out at the neighborhood pool playing bocce ball with our friends.

Going camping. Golfing a Saturday or two. My mind really hasn’t even begun to wander yet.

But driving home and seeing what Brenda had done to the house on only her first day of summer showed me that her mind wasn’t wandering at all.

If my first move for summer is to head to the pool with the boys and a cooler, hers was to roll up her sleeves and initiate the myriad of projects that have been piling up in the back of her mind.

And there is the divide.

It’s hard to head to the pool when your wife is hauling 20 lb bags of pea gravel. My guilty conscience starts to act up (I’m Catholic after all).

Rainstorms, webcams and waterfalls Can you believe the rain this past week? The amounts that fell in some areas were amazing (and a bit terrifying, too, especially if you were one of the folks affected by out-ofthe-banks creeks STEVE HUDSON and flash flooding).

Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net It made the news bigtime, and it was hard to pull your eyes away.

I think about that TV video showing the normally quiet Chattahoochee through Helen as it rampaged through the town. Rain in the mountains flooded small branches, which then flooded small creeks, which in turn flooded bigger creeks and, eventually, flooded the Chattahoochee through the town.

The result? A zillion gallons of water roared right through the middle of the community, right through places that I recognized from days spent fishing the river earlier in the year. But there was no fishing in the midst of that maelstrom – just awe at the force of a flooding river.

Watching this on the news was scary enough, but watching it in real time was another. Thanks to the U.S. Geological Survey’s live webcam in Helen, I could see the river “right now” without leaving the comfort of home.

You can see it too. Here’s the web address: www2.usgs.gov/water/southatlantic/ga/rivercam/webcam-helen.html Watching the river this way is always interesting, and for a few seconds at a time you can even take control of where the camera is pointing. If we get more rain, and they say we might, this will be a compelling way to see firsthand what’s going on as the rain comes down and the rivers come up.

There’s another waterway webcam you might enjoy checking on too – the one that overlooks Big Creek near Rock Mill Park. Find it here to see what happens to Big Creek when heavy precipitation comes: www2.usgs.gov/water/southatlantic/ga/rivercam/webcam-bigcreek.htm I found this one by accident one day while fishing this part of Big Creek at low water. Right away, I called my wife on the phone and told her I was on TV, sort of, and that she should check it out. So she went to the site and, sure enough, there I was (waders and fly rod and all) standing on the paved greenway trail. I waved and blew her a kiss.

She liked that.

But I digress. Here in the southeast, we’ve got good live webcam coverage

An angler does some Trout fishing in the mountains between rain bands. of a number of different rivers. In fact, there are currently some 17 USGS river cams in operation in Georgia and in North and South Carolina. You can access them via the USGS site, usgs.gov/ centers/sa-water.

Look for the link at the right side of the screen (it’s the second entry under “SAWSC Quick Links”). Then click on the “Overview” tab, which takes you to the links to the various webcams. But be forewarned. These live river cams will eat up a ton of time if you don’t watch out.

Yes, river cams are nice. But there’s nothing like experiencing a creek or river firsthand, even in the rain. My buddy Marty and I managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of fishing last Monday far up in the mountains, between the worst of the rain bands, and the trout fishing turned out to be better than you might have expected. The trout, as my dad once pointed out to me, are already wet and don’t mind the precipitation at all (at least until things get too high and too muddy).

But the big rainy-weather draw isn’t fishing. It’s waterfalls.

There’s no doubt about it. If you’re a waterfalls enthusiast, the days right after a big rain event are the best time ever to check out some of northern Georgia’s falls. Otherwise, tiny falls become impressive cascades, and medium to large falls take on epic proportions that just may be a photographer’s dream come true.

Of course, you’ve got to keep safety in mind when visiting waterfalls during

or after a rain event. For one thing, there’s a wee bit of danger associated with all that fast-flowing, hard-falling water. Don’t forget that. Stay out of the swollen creeks, and don’t go climbing in search of a better angle, etc. etc. You know the drill.

Be careful hiking in too. The same rains that turn the falls into unforgettable scenes will also make trails slippery and footing unsure.

Are there any particular falls you should check out? Everyone has favorites. One of the most accessible (and most spectacular) post-rain waterfalls is Anna Ruby Falls (accessible via Ga. 356 and Anna Ruby Falls Road near Unicoi State Park) not far from Helen. Fed by creeks that come out of the mountains, this falls truly has been in world-class form these last few days – and the fact that a paved trail takes you to a couple of observation platforms makes the adventure even more appealing.

Other falls in the area will be equally impressive. In that context, I’ve got to mention Dukes Creek Falls, accessible from the parking area off the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway/GA 348 which turns west off Highway 75A just north of Smithgall Woods State Park). You’ve got to do a bit of hiking to get there, but it’s worth it at any time – especially after a lot of rain. Need I say more?

Just be safe as you visit these falls.

Never forget the power of a rain-swollen stream – even the little ones like you find up in the mountains.

Just don’t forget that camera – and a dry change of clothes!

cal tips for narrowing down your house hunt in Atlanta.

1. Get pre-approved for a loan At first, this step might seem completely removed from your actual home search — but trust us, it helps. Talking to a mortgage broker first is one of the smartest things you can do because pre-approval immediately rules out any home for sale that is not in your price range, saving you lots of wasted time.

Pre-approval will also give you credibility with sellers, making them more likely to accept an offer from you — plus, it streamlines the loan process itself once you go under contract.

2. Make two lists Before starting your house hunt in Atlanta, we recommend making two separate lists. On one list, write down all the aspects of a home that are “musthaves” — anything that is non-negotiable for you. For example, if you need three bedrooms and two bathrooms, or if you won’t consider anything without a two-car garage, you can rule out any

home that does not have these features.

The second list is a “wish list” — things that you would like to have in a home but could do without.

Once you have made these two lists, review them while searching for homes online. Exterior shutter trends for 2018 Exterior Shutters plays an important part in the overall look and feel of your home. Let’s explore some of the popular trends we see for 2018.

Simplicity: Try using simple shutters for a pure, uncluttered effect to allow other beautiful features on the outside of your home to shine. It is in line with minimalism, where you incorporate clean, refreshing looks, while adding a nice touch to your decor.

To follow this trend, use shutters with sharp lines, minimal details and neutral colors. Here we will propose something like a flat panel shutter, and/ or a shutter with one large single panel, or even a board and batten style with no battens (horizontal pieces).

Lighten up: Color plays a big role in the overall appearance of your home, and while exterior shutters are typically dark colored, we’ve seen an uptick in lighter colored shutters. This works especially well when trying to modernize the look of an older building. Light colored walls, combined with shutters in a slightly darker hue seems to be the norm. Whites and greys works very well and is a trend that will be with us for a while.

Stick with the basics: Exterior shutters should never overpower the look of your house and not all homes lend itself to the exotic. There’s nothing wrong with some traditional Raised Panel style shutters or even Louvered shutters to give a traditional, formal house a neat and tidy look. Board and Batten shutters works well on a house with a mix of exterior surfaces (brick

and stone, or siding and shingles).

For Raised Panel style shutters, make sure the panels mimic the windows, for Louvers you can try a wider slat, and with Board and Batten shutters we see a trend to use more, but narrower Boards (vertical pieces).

Add flair and personality: Another subtle way of giving you home a oneof-a-kind appearance is to add custom cutouts to your shutters. Let your home’s personality shine with just about any shape you can imagine, from stars and crescent moons to palm trees and hearts.

Go bold and traditional with a full cutout, or subtle and interesting with only a small relief cut on the outside corner. This obviously only works on paneled or Board and Batten style shutters.

Cooktop On the Wall. “We’re moving the cooktop to a wall location and creating magnificent tile focal points on many of our kitchens” says Remodeling Expo Center’s, John Hogan. “Moving the cooktop to the wall or moving the microwave from above the cooktop, each of these design strategies yields gorgeous kitchens.

Smart Storage. Sometimes enlarging the kitchen isn’t possible, or sometimes as a component of expanding the kitchen, smart storage options is always a component of the remodel. Spice racks, Keurig inserts, roll-out drawers and hidden appliance options are all surprisingly common features of 2018 kitchens.

Lighting. More light sources create less shadows and more comfortable ambient lighting feel. Remodeling Expo Center emphasizes the use of clear light, LED technology which reflects off counters and backsplash and contributes to truly gorgeous kitchens.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The 2017-18 GHSA athletics year was filled with thrilling comebacks, last-second wins, underdogs slaying Goliaths and tightly contested battles.

With another year in the books, here are some of the most thrilling contests from the season.

Appen Media has compiled, in no particular order, its best games of the year for North Fulton and Forsyth County team sports.

Lambert 15, Centennial 14 (boys lacrosse semifinals) For the second straight year, Lambert and Centennial met in the boys lacrosse playoffs with a berth in the state finals at stake, leading to a thrilling, overtime battle between two of the top programs in the state.

In the high-intensity contest, Lambert opened a 9-4 halftime lead, but the Knights came fighting back in the second half.

Centennial eventually tied the game at 10-10 before taking a 13-11 lead with just over six minutes remaining. With both teams exchanging blows, Lambert pulled to within one goal in the final minute and forced overtime on a goal with just seven ticks remaining on the clock.

In the sudden death overtime, Benny O’Rourk scored the game-winning goal to send the Longhorns to the state finals.

Northview 61, Coffee 57 (girls basketball state quarterfinals) Northview earned its second straight

trip to the final four on Feb. 27 against Coffee, but not before staving off a fourth-quarter comeback from the Trojans.

The Titans led by 12 entering the final period, but Coffee forced multiple turnovers and tied the game with just three minutes remaining.

Both teams battled through missed shots over the next two minutes with Northview clinging to a one-possession lead.

The Titans looked to ice the game in the final 60 seconds, but in front of a hostile traveling Coffee crowd, Northview missed four free throws, keeping the Trojans within striking distance.

With 30 seconds left, Coffee looked for the tying 3-pointer. After missing on the first attempt, Coffee retained possession as the crowd collectively held its breath for the second attempt. The second 3-point attempt also missed, and Northview’s Maya Richards gathered in the rebound to ice the game and secure the thrilling win to advance the Titans to the semifinals.

Blessed Trinity 21, Cartersville 17 (second round football playoffs) In order to reach their eventual 2017 football state championship, Blessed Trinity first had to get past the two-time defending state champs Cartersville, who entered their contest against the Titans riding a 41-game win streak.

Undaunted, the Titans scored a goahead touchdown in the final minute to end the Canes’ remarkable winning streak.

BT led 14-3 at the half, but the Canes scored two unanswered touchdowns to claim a 17-14 lead.

On May 4, the rivalry that spans nearly seven decades had one of its most exciting recent chapters with the Hornets and Eagles meeting in the Class 7A girls soccer quarterfinals. looked poised to extend their lead, but a Canes receiver had the ball punched out of his hands near the goal line and BT recovered. Though they were forced to punt, the Titans were back on offense after stopping Canes quarterback Trevor Lawrence, at that time the nation’s top QB recruit.

The Titans drove to Cartersville’s 26yard line in the final minute. Jake Smith rolled to his right and connected with receiver Ryan Davis with 12 seconds left for the game-winning score.

Milton 2, Roswell 1 PKs (girls soccer quarterfinals) No North Fulton rivalry can compare to the history and love-to-hate sentiment of Roswell and Milton. With their seasons on the line, both teams played with fervor throughout the contest, but the match remained in a scoreless deadlock until Milton broke through with a go-ahead goal in the 69th minute.

Facing elimination at the hands of their rivals, Roswell upped its pressure and forced overtime with a goal in the final minute.

Riding the momentum of their thrilling tying goal, the Hornets came out shooting in overtime. Though the Hornets put multiple shots on goal, they were unable to find the back of the net

and Milton held on to push the game to PKs. In the shootout, Milton’s Alexandra Bicknell made three saves to give Milton the 3-2 advantage to win and keep their eventual state runner-up season alive.

Alpharetta 34, Centennial 31 (football, Sept. 9) Alpharetta football earned their fourth region championship this season, and it all started with a thrilling comeback win over Centennial in the Raiders’ region opening game.

Centennial’s high-powered offense came out swinging and opened a 24-7 lead in the second quarter. Alpharetta chipped away at the lead over the next two quarters but still trailed by a touchdown in the final minutes.

Facing a fourth-and-two in their own territory, Raiders quarterback Matthew Downing kept the ball on a zone read, found a seam along the sideline and scrambled 65-yards to tie the game with under three minutes remaining.

On Centennial’s ensuing possession, cornerback Jaycee Horn intercepted a pass and returned it to the Knights’ 14yard line with just 34 seconds remaining.

With just three ticks left on the clock, the Raiders called a timeout to set up Dylan Schorr’s 21-yard, game-winning field goal to complete the stirring comeback.

Chattahoochee 2, Cambridge 1 OT (boys soccer finals) Chattahoochee and Cambridge boys soccer met twice in 2018, and each time a championship was at stake. In the regular season, the two programs met for the de-facto Region 7-AAAAAA title, with Cambridge ending Hooch’s 33-game region win streak for the title. But on May 12, Hooch earned their revenge by denying Cambridge its first state championship in an overtime thriller.

Battling in a scoreless stalemate, Chattahoochee broke through with the go-ahead goal with just eight minutes remaining. However, Cambridge used a fortuitous bounce to force overtime.

In the final minute of regulation, a deflecting Hooch clear careened off a player, landing near Cambridge’s Ryan Walker. With just 28 seconds remaining, Walker scored the tying goal to force overtime and keep the Bears’ state title hopes alive.

Though the Bears had scoring chances in the first overtime period, it was Hooch who netted the eventual game-winning goal. In the first overtime period, Hooch scored on a corner with a Ryan Kapper header to earn the Cougars their second straight state championship.

Local schools rank among state’s top athletic programs

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Each year the Georgia Athletic Director’s Association awards the top athletic programs in each of the state’s eight classifications, and this year many of the Director’s Cup trophies will reside in local schools. Lambert, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Blessed Trinity were all awarded for their athletic programs in boys and girls play.

A points system is used to determine the winners. Each school is awarded points based on its eight best performing sports during the athletic year.

In Class 7A, Lambert was named the best overall athletics program. It is the fourth-straight year the Longhorns have taken the top spot in the state’s highest classification.

The Longhorns captured state titles in boys soccer and boys lacrosse and earned four state runner up finishes to lead Class 7A’s 48 schools.

The boys programs topped all schools in the classification, and the girls placed second.

Lambert finished ahead of Milton, who placed second overall.

South earned two state championships in boys tennis and cheerleading and two runner up titles in girls cross country and boys soccer.

In Class 6A, Alpharetta’s 2017-18 season was not only its best in program

history, it was the best in the state. The Raiders won their first Director’s Cup as Class 6A’s top overall program.

Alpharetta captured the girls soccer state title and finished as state runner up in volleyball and boys track and field.

The Raiders were also boosted by deep playoff runs in baseball, boys soccer, football and top-10 finishes in boys and girls swimming.

The Johns Creek girls program earned the top spot in Class 6A, leading the school to third in the overall standings.

The Gladiator girls swim and golf teams placed as state runner up, while the volleyball, soccer and tennis teams earned trips to the quarterfinals. The Johns Creek boys were led by two state championships in tennis and golf.

Blessed Trinity narrowly missed out on being named the best overall program in its class for the fourth-straight year, falling just 52 points short of Marist.

However, the Titan boys earned the title of best boys program in Class 4A. BT earned the football and lacrosse state championship and were second in tennis to lead the Titans.

The BT girls captured the 4A/5A swimming state title and the lacrosse program won its third consecutive state title to finish second in the girls standings.

Davidson to lead Tigers lacrosse in inaugural season MILTON, Ga. — King’s Ridge has announced Jamie Davidson will lead the boys varsity lacrosse program in their 2019 inaugural season.

“Coach Davidson is a well-respected coach in the community and we are blessed to have him

working with our young men,” said Travis Klabon, boys lacrosse program coordinator.

Davidson, who moved to Georgia six years ago, brings experience to King’s Ridge. Davidson has coached with the Lambert program and

served as the Pinecrest Academy head coach in the 2018 season.

Davidson also played for Army at the collegiate level and at Fayetteville-Manlius High School in Syracuse, New York.
