Trailer, motorcycle stolen from property MILTON, Ga. — A cargo trailer, motorcycle and furniture valued at nearly $5,000 was stolen from a vacant property on Birmingham Highway sometime between Aug. 5 and Aug. 12.

On Aug. 12, the property owner’s nephew, who stores items at the site, noticed his trailer was missing. Furniture which had been stored on the trailer was dumped on the ground where the trailer had sat.

Before they could reply, the man pointed the gun at their heads and told them to put all of their belongings in his car before he drove off.

The thief took the victims’ car keys, house keys, cell phones and wallets.

When police tried to ping the cellphones, they were already turned off.

The suspect was described as a tall, thin man in his 20s with a “military” haircut.

A storage shed on the property was also burglarized after a lock plate on the door was pried open. An air compressor, small generator and a motorcycle that was being restored were missing.

Another shed on the property was apparently entered, but it was determined no items were missing.

Treatment for dry eye syndrome is usually initiated with over-the-counter lubricating drops called artificial tears. Artificial tears serve to manually moisten the eyes and supplement the natural tears when the patient is symptomatic.

Many drug store and brand names exist, varying from a thin watery consistency to a thicker gel form, and they work well for the majority of patients. Be wary of drops that simply “get the red out” – they are not intended to lubricate the eye’s surface.

Freedom From Dry Eyes

Lifestyle changes can also help patients with dry eye syndrome. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in walnuts, salmon, and tuna, improves the oil layer and leads to better lubrication of the ocular surface. For patients with diets deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil and flaxseed oil nutritional supplements are recommended. Additionally, using a humidifier at home and work can also help alleviate dry eye symptoms.

People who spend most of their workdays on a computer can develop digital eye fatigue. Typically, an individual blinks his or her eye every 5 to 6 seconds.

Blinking allows the surface of the eye to be replenished with tears and feel comfortable. This rate diminishes by half when concentrating on a digital screen and can lead to digital eye fatigue. Symptoms of digital eye fatigue are similar to that of Dry Eye Syndrome and include eyestrain, intermittent blurred vision, and feeling of soreness or tiredness around the eyes, especially at the end of a long day. Patient experiencing these symptoms should considering taking frequent breaks throughout the day. The 20/20/20 rule has been developed to help individuals who experience digital eye fatigue. Every 20 minutes, you should take a break away from your computer for 20 seconds by looking at something 20 feet away. Following this simple guide will give your eyes some time to relax, to blink naturally, and to refresh your tear film.

Many patients experience more constant or chronic symptoms requiring further treatment. Preservative-free artificial tears, which are available in individual vials, can be beneficial to individuals with long-standing history of dry eye syndrome that have become poorly responsive to bottled artificial tears and that are prone to irritation from the preservatives. Additionally, thicker ointment formulations of artificial tears, such as Refresh PM or Genteal, can be applied to the eyes right before bedtime to prevent desiccation of the eye surface over the course of the night. This is especially helpful in individuals who have exposure of their eyes from an incomplete closure of their eyelids.

Punctal plugs may be recommended to block the drainage of tears into the tear ducts of the upper and lower eyelids. These plugs serve as mechanical barriers and help to preserve the tear film volume.

Often, patients with Dry Eye Syndrome have associated chronic inflammation on the eye surface. A short course of low-dose topical steroids, such as lotemax (loteprednol etabonate), can be employed to reduce inflammation. Another ant-inflammatory prescription medication cyclosporine 0.05% (brand name Restasis) has been approved for long-term use in Dry Eye Syndrome. It has been shown to not only reduce inflammation on the eye surface but also help improve tear production. Most recently, lifitegrast 5% (brand name Xiidra) was also approved as an anti-inflammatory medication for use in patients with Dry Eye Syndrome. Both of these medications have similar side effects, such as temporary eye irritation, discomfort, or blurred vision, but overall are tolerated well with good efficacy.

Eyelid disease can also contribute to dry eye syndrome. Meibomian glands located on the eyelids produce the normal oil layer of the tear film. Disruption of this oil layer due to clogged or poorly functioning meibomian glands or make-up residue can lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. Keeping clean healthy eyelids on a consistent basis can help to ease dry eye symptoms. Here are two techniques that can be utilized:

Warm compresses: Soak a clean washcloth with hot water. Fold the washcloth into a roll and hold it in contact with both eyelids until the cloth cools. Reheat the cloth and repeat this procedure for at least five minutes. Applying direct warm compresses to the eyelids aids in unblocking these glands and improving oil gland function.

Lid scrubs: Following these warm compresses, lightly wash the eyelashes and eyelids with your eyes closed using a mild soap, such as baby shampoo, diluted in one capful of water. You can use either your finger or a soft washcloth. These lid scrubs assist in removing residual make-up debris and bacteria from the eyelids.

For patients with severe eyelid disease, an antibiotic named doxycycline may be used for a short duration to reduce the normal bacterial load of the eyelids. Doxycycline also has anti-inflammatory properties to decrease eyelid-associated inflammation.

When patients with severe dry eyes fail conventional therapies, customized contact lenses called scleral lenses may be necessary. These lenses serve as a moisture chamber to continuously bathe the ocular surface with lubricating drops.

Autologous serum tears can also be an option for severe dry eye patients. Blood is drawn from the patient; subsequently, the plasma is separated from the red blood cells and then combined with preservative free artificial tears. Serum tears contain many of the biologically active components of natural tears that help to improve the eye surface and treat Dry Eye Syndrome.

Various new therapeutic modalities continue to emerge for the management of dry eye syndrome. Patients with dry eye syndrome should seek a consultation with an ophthalmologist specializing in dry eye management to better understand their condition and learn about their treatment options.

Alpharetta denies Kimball Bridge residential development plan Council voices concern over traffic congestion

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Alpharetta City Council derailed plans for a new residential development just north of New Prospect Elementary Monday when it denied a change to the city’s Master Plan.

The developer, 1699 Land Company, had sought approval to build 62 detached, single-family homes in a gated community with private streets on 12.4 acres.

The property, currently zoned for office and institutional, is at the southwest corner of Kimball Bridge Road and North Point Parkway.

Debate among residents when the project was first considered by the Planning Commission in April centered on increased traffic for the already busy intersection. The Planning Commission recommended denial of the zoning change.

The plan had since been revised when it came before the City Council Monday. The new plan provided for restricted access from North Point Parkway, allowing residents right-turn entry and right-turn exit from the property.

The plan also provided a full exit on the south from Rock Mill Road.

Attorney Don Rolader, representing the applicant, said the property has been actively on the market for more than 15 years and has never received

any serious interest for office development.

Moreover, by allowing residential development, studies from the city and the developer show the area would see less traffic than if it were developed for its full office potential, Rolader said..

“The way it is proposed today there is zero vehicular access on Kimball Bridge Road,” Rolader said.

He added that the project was designed in conjunction with the city’s plans for intersection improvements at Kimball Bridge and North Point Parkway so that no adjustments would be necessary.

This is really a choice between two options, Rolader said. The property is zoned for intense office and institutional development. But by allowing residential, the impact to the area would be less severe.

“If we choose to go with a residential development of 62 homes, we have a major reduction in people, in traffic and in impact on those roads,” Rolader said.

But City Councilman Jim Gilvin said he often hears how one development will generate less traffic than another. The truth, he said, is that the site currently generates no traffic.

Gilvin said he was more concerned with traffic conditions on North Point Parkway than he was with how the property would be used.

Councilman Chris Owens said he appreciated the work the developer put into the plan, and he conceded that a residential development would generate less traffic than an office complex.

“One thing that I can’t get past is whether the corner of North Point Parkway and Kimball Bridge Road is the right place for residential,” Owens said.

“I know these gentlemen do a good job when they build developments. That’s not a question in my mind.

“This to me is whether that’s the appropriate use on that corner of two busy highways.”

The final council vote was 6-1 to deny the rezoning request without prejudice, which will provide the landowner an easier path to resubmit a similar request in the future.

Councilman Donald Mitchell cast the lone dissenting vote.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - The first look at the North STEM High School in Alpharetta was presented to the Fulton County School Board this month, depicting an entirely new plan for the old Milton High campus, while retaining elements of the past.

The open enrollment high school, which will focus on a science, technology, engineering and math, is scheduled to open in August 2020 on the campus of the former Milton High in downtown Alpharetta.

The school will be open to students from across Fulton County, and career pathways will be offered in health sciences, information technology and engineering.

In early August, school board members were presented the schematic drawings of the campus. The board approved the plans on Aug. 17 paving the way for final drawings.

The design of the campus came together after meetings with key constituents to determine the optimal layout to meet the educational needs of students, as well as for the business community.

“This is a little more ‘out of the box’ than a prototypical high school ... so we really listened throughout the entire process to teachers, individuals in

the community, business leaders, the school board [and others],” explained Patrick Burke, deputy superintendent for Operations.

While the old school buildings will be razed to make way for new buildings, the campus will retain the athletic and recreation spaces, including baseball, softball and football fields. School officials said those fields continue to be used by the public and play an important role in the community.

The school will encompass 243,000 square feet, including an auditorium, with a capacity of 1,500 students drawn from the 10 high schools across the system.

Nate Williamson of Cooper Carry, the architectural firm for the project, said the campus also demonstrates the school system’s goal of working with Alpharetta on its plans for downtown revitalization.

“Alpharetta is going through an effort to recreate a historical downtown and this school is obviously a fundamental part of the downtown area,” Williamson said. “Moving the buildings to the front of the site gives it a really strong, traditional identity that is important to the project.”

An expansive courtyard entrance flanked by two wings of the school provides a welcoming entrance into the school, he noted. The main building is three stories, with two separate, onestory buildings containing the engineering program and an auditorium.

STEM: Continued from Page 6 Campus is combining the cafeteria and media center — two areas that are often underused throughout the day — into one “touchdown space” for students use.

“The idea is to provide a full day of space utilization for studying or collaboration,” Williamson said. “Combining these spaces together can really create a high-energy environment for students.”

Another feature is a one-stop area where guidance counselors, social workers, career center staff and administrators are located to help students with career and curriculum issues.

“This is front and center,” Williamson said. “When you have students from 10 different schools [going through] a rigorous curriculum it’s really important.”

The North STEM campus is funded by the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved by voters in the May 2016. The schools will be open to all students, and will help alleviate overcrowding at North Fulton’s traditional high schools. A South STEM high school opens in 2021.

It’s time to update Bring back civility ‘The Devil’s Dictionary’ to local politics Just a little over 100 years ago, American author Ambrose Bierce published “The Devil’s Dictionary,” a compilation of some 1,013 words with revised definitions.

Bierce, a conPAT FOX temporary of Mark Editor pat@appenmediagroup.com Twain and close to his equal in wit, assembled the lexicon from three decades of columns he’d written for the San Francisco Wasp magazine and later the San Francisco Examiner.

He added more definitions later, and by 1906, he had signed a contract with Doubleday to publish the compilation.

A few of his more notable definitions: • Academe, n. An ancient school where morality and philosophy were taught.

• Academy, n. [from academe] A modern school where football is taught.

• Apologize, v.i. To lay the foundation for a future offense.

• Beauty, n. The power by which a woman charms a lover and terrifies a husband.

• Egotist, n. A person of low taste, more interested in himself than in me.

Bierce and his “Devil’s Dictionary” came to mind recently when I was struck by how outdated many of today’s common word definitions have become.

I offer a few examples – first the word, a short definition and then an explanation.

• Eclectic, adj. Awful.

The word once described a subject that incorporated a wide range of styles or sources. But, it has come to mean that what you’re trying to describe is indescribable, and in most cases indescribably bad.

I’ve seen “eclectic” clothing stores with racks of shirts I wouldn’t wear to a fire.

There are “eclectic” furniture stores with appointments so offensive that no self-respecting environmentalist would plant them at a yard sale.

Georgia State University’s WRAS radio describes its nighttime lineup as “eclectic.”

That’s when an otherwise thoughtful management turns over the keys to one of the most powerful radio stations in the country to students.

What once was an exciting forum for exciting, interesting new music is now the tarmac for personal (painfully

personal) tours of what can only be described as “head-banger schmaltz” and “curious noise.”

I confess that I don’t know everything about today’s music, but I do know what I dislike. This lineup gives life to “dead air.”

The shopping cart was invented in 1936, and through most of its history has been pushed from behind, usually with two hands.

But the use of cell phones has given rise to an innovation in propulsion.

Many shoppers today walk beside the cart, grabbing its frame, pulling it alongside as they browse and chat, cluttering the already narrow aisles.

For traditional shoppers, it’s hard to fathom.

Worse, these riveting conversations often continue to the checkout aisles where the shopper unloads the cart with one hand, unholsters a check card and completes the transaction with their neck tilted to their shoulder like an ancient Alexandrian bust.

I’m saddened by the growing popularity of modern storytelling, especially the array of programs littering public radio on weekends.

You’ve got storytelling with meandering jazz. You’ve got storytelling with a beat. You’ve got storytelling with sound effects.

They all have one thing in common: When disassembled, the stories themselves fall far short of what’s advertised, and the music is even less interesting – much less.

Together, though, they create an illusion that what you’re hearing is possibly worth your time.

It isn’t.

Great writing and great stories require no soundtrack. Byron and Dickens needed no accessories.

Long before the popularity of music videos, I spoke with a nationally acclaimed television photojournalist, telling him I’d like to someday create news features and put them to music.

He replied that if a story needs music, it can’t be much of a story.

He was right.

What a shame no one has the ability to mine for stories interesting enough to stand on their own. Today’s stories require accompaniment, just like shopping for groceries, just like almost everything else.

With the national news showing the country in a constant state of political turmoil, I am calling on all participants in the local elections to take a different path – it is called HATCHER HURD civility.

Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com In covering local politics for more than 30 years, I have seen the descent of local political races devolve more and more into a mirror of statewide and national races. I’m talking about the adage “All’s fair in love, war and politics.”

As with most trite sayings, it is not true but rather an excuse to ignore the norms of civility in public life.

Also, I have found that those who indulge most in mudslinging do so because they do not have the faith in the value of their own ideas.

Elected office, especially at the local level, is still a public service. Most people enter into it with that thought in mind.

It is not uncommon to come into politics with a sense of purpose and mission. The trouble starts when the purpose takes on the trappings of a cause. Then, in their minds, it becomes a contest of good over evil.

And oh what evil things people do in the name of “the greater purpose.”

The truth is, those who stoop to low methods do so because they don’t have the ability to convince others of the rightness of their purpose. So they attack the character and the motives of their opponents. Of course that invites the opponents to do likewise.

What it does is cheapen the whole system. Now there is no way to cleanse the entire political system. It has been ugly and biased since the days of the founding fathers.

But remember we are all neighbors here. Our children go to the same schools, we shop at the same stores.

No one has horns or cloven hooves.

Why cannot we campaign on the merit

of our ideas and the content of our own character?

The dirty tricks, the anonymous or bogus emails and all of the dirty tricks we hate about politics should be set aside in our local elections.

All of North Fulton has been subjected to 20 years of tremendous growth. That growth is what brought many of us here. The reality is this

It is not uncommon to come into politics with a sense of purpose and mission.

The trouble starts when the purpose takes on the trappings of a cause.

Then, in their minds, it becomes a contest of good over evil. growth is going to continue into Forsyth County, east Cherokee County and Gwinnett County.

The communities we moved into will continue to change. And the one thing I have learned covering all of this change is we can’t stay in the past. But we are all in this together as communities. We are not monsters or thugs.

So we should remember we are neighbors looking for answers to deal with all of this change. And we should remember that 95 percent of the country would kill to have the problems we face. We are so prosperous, we have a glut of prosperity. We offer a lot for people who are looking for a great place to raise a family and find economic opportunity.

So a little civility if you please.

Handel pays visit to Emory Johns Creek Hospital Freshman congresswoman touring Sixth District

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Sixth District Congresswoman Karen Handel was touring the district for her first trip back home since winning the special election this summer.

She said she is settling in well in Washington and getting to work.

“I was surprised at how quickly I was able to get integrated into the flow of things,” Handel said during her tour of Emory Johns Creek Hospital.

“The cooperation of the Georgia [Congressional] Delegation has been amazing,” she said.

She was especially glad for the help as a freshman congresswoman having to find her way around the House with no experienced staff to help her.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price’s staff had either followed Price into his new job or already

found other jobs on The Hill.

“From Day One I had no one to even answer the phone,” she said.

But the members of the Georgia House Delegation were quick to provide help and get her clued into the routine of things.

“They have been amazing,” she said.

What has surprised Handel is how most members of Congress are focused on the individual legislation that they are pushing rather than stepping back to look at the “greater whole or good.”

“But I think we have to keep our eyes on the big picture,” she said.

Another adjustment has been to deal with the amount of walking representatives have to do.

“Walking back and forth from your offices to The Hill and back teaches you the importance of a good pair of shoes,” Handel said. “It’s three-and-a-half miles.”

And while there is a lot of attention paid to the legislation before Congress, she realizes she will have to pay some dues before she is going to get much attention.

Continued from Page 10 “I get it. I’m the new kid on the block,” she said. “But I am already serving on committees, and those committees will give me ample opportunities to serve.”

She has been assigned to the Education in the Workforce Committee and the Judiciary Committee – two diverse areas, she said.

A big topic for the Judiciary is the opioid epidemic that is ravaging the nation. That was one of the key topics she was asking about in her visit with Emory Johns Creek Hospital Administrator Marilyn Margolis.

They discussed not only the apparent ease with which opioids can be dispensed for relatively mild pain, but the rise in synthetic opioids that are hitting the streets right here in North Fulton that are 50 to 100 times more potent than prescribed opioids.

“And often the street sellers and buyers don’t know what they are using,” she said.

By the time one synthetic drug is identified and gets banned, there is a new one on the street, often more deadly than the last.

“We try to get them on the proscribed list as fast as we can, but then they reformulate the drug and it’s not illegal. All they have to do is change one molecule and it is treated as a new drug and goes through the whole process again,” she said.

She sees that aspect of the problem while serving on the Judiciary Committee.

“How to deal with illegal drugs is near the top of the list. But we are also involved with tort reform, especially the protection of intellectual property,” Handel said. “I am one of two non-lawyers on the committee. But I think I bring a different perspective to the issue.”

Handel is also co-sponsoring a bill that provides latitude looking at social media to clamp down on human trafficking.

Then in the fall, Congress is taking up the issue of tax reform.

“I’m optimistic we can get something done there in the House,” she said.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Hundreds turned out Aug. 17 to hear Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle speak at the Roswell Rotary Club on service, economy and public education. The stop was part of a tour across Georgia for the gubernatorial candidate. Prior to his Rotary visit, Cagle had gone to 17 counties over six days.

Recently elected Rep. Karen Handel, along with Sen. John Albers, helped kick off the proceedings and introduce Cagle.

“We are the number one state to do business in,” Cagle said. “We have so many economic engines that are providing opportunities that are second to none. We are the eighth largest state in the nation. The Fortune 500 companies, the university systems, the resources, the instructions – we are very, very, blessed.”

Cagle challenged his audience to think about how Georgia’s economic growth and prosperity could be shared across the whole state. Infrastructure especially was a major concern for Cagle. The collapse of the I-85 bridge in the spring showed that the infrastructure Georgia currently has in place was built for about half the size of today’s population, he said.

“Georgia’s always best when we stretch,” Cagle said. “We witnessed that when government gets out of the way and incentivizes the private sector to do what they do best, you can build a bridge back in 45 days.”

To better prepare for the future and avoid any similar incidents, Cagle said the state needs to prioritize its budgeting. He identified infrastructure, especially for better access to rural hospitals, as the most critical area in need of funding.

While discussing transportation and traffic, Cagle warned that self-driving cars are becoming a reality and people need to prepare.

“Just look at how much money Silicone Valley is putting into autonomous

vehicles,” he said. “They’re not going to let this go away. It’s coming, but that creates more opportunity. ” One of those opportunities could be more jobs, another challenge the state faces. According to Cagle, Georgia had 150,000 job openings the day he spoke.

Three-quarters of those jobs need either an industry certification or a two-year degree from a technical college.

Education is the key to filling those jobs and creating a “world-class workforce,” Cagle said.

“Education fundamentally drives the economy,” he said. “Not the reverse.”

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Lukowiak family, owners of Johns Creek Ace Hardware Store on Jones Bridge Road, has been known to take a flier based on the weather. During a recent blizzard the Lukowiaks’ took a chance and stocked up on sleds and became Toboggan Central.

“Yeah, we’ve taken gambles before.

We’ve gone in on sleds, on ice-melt. So it wasn’t that unusual for us to go for it this time,” Richard Lukowiak said.

Lukowiak said his family decided to gamble again and put in an order for 10,000 solar eclipse safety glasses. Last week it paid off in spades.

“We’re just thankful we have a big parking lot,” he said.

Thursday afternoon before the eclipse, the line was still holding steady, moving about 100 people an hour. Only the glasses were fading.

Lukowiak said they got their last shipment of 2,000 glasses and were down to about 900 pair. At five pair a customer, their little goldmine figured to peter out before dark.

Customers patiently lined up outside the door, turned right as the line snaked along the inside wall of the building all the way to the back.

Then it crept left along on the store’s back wall until it hit the middle aisle. Then it was back toward the front to spill into two waiting cash registers.

Those who ordered online got a straight pass to the backroom to pick up a maximum of five pairs of glasses for the reasonable price of $15 each.

Nobody was complaining – not about the wait or the price. Everyone was happy to find a place that wasn’t sold out.

Lukowiak said they put a limit on the glasses so more folks would have the chance to get them.

Lilia Anteau of Johns Creek said she waited an hour – that was about the usual – and did not mind a bit.

“I’m bringing my kids to see [the eclipse]. I want them to experience something rare and privileged,’ Anteau said. “It doesn’t happen every day.”

Group rallies to keep public art in Roswell Downtown Development Authority donates $10K, issues matching challenge to raise private funding

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — One of the temporary public art pieces currently in Roswell may become a permanent fixture for the city, as long as the community can raise $10,000.

The Roswell Downtown Development Authority recently donated $10,000 in funding toward keeping Sentience in the Heart of Roswell Park on Canton Street. It is one of 10 new sculptures featured in this year’s ArtRound Roswell Sculpture Tour.

The nine-month tour features 13 sculptures in each of Roswell’s parks, including two permanent sculptures which were bought last year – Smoke and Oak Leaf Triptych. The remaining pieces will disappear, unless someone opts to buy them.

The Roswell Arts Fund, which created ArtAround Roswell, has been raising funds to purchase some of the current sculptures through its Keep the Art! campaign. Now, the Downtown Development Authority has stepped up to the plate to aid in the effort.

Downtown Development Authority Chairman Randy Schultz said the donation is in part a way to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for the downtown business district.

“We are committed to creating inviting gathering spaces and enriching social experiences,” Schultz said. “Sentience, as the focal point of the Heart of Roswell Park, mirrors the optimism, hospitality and charm of the city, and

Sentience, a large and reflective stainless steel model of a bloodroot flower, was created by Atlanta-based artist David Landis. He chose the native bloodroot flower because it has a “wonderful, dynamic quality, like a firework exploding.”

Rochelle Mucha said she was thrilled by the Downtown Development Authority’s initiative and hopes the community will respond in kind.

“Public art helps activate spaces and drive economic vitality, while creating a unique sense of place and identity for our city,” Mucha said. “Most great cities are known for their public art – just look at Chicago, New York and San Francisco. We’re not there yet, but you have got to start somewhere.”

The sculptures will remain in Roswell through December. Visitors can learn about the artists and their works through the free audio tour guide app Otocast. The app also allows visitors to vote for their favorite works and contribute funds to help the city buy and keep the art.

Northside-Gwinnett pact continues hospital merger trend Healthcare system would rank among largest in Georgia

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Health System, the parent of Gwinnett Medical Center, announced Aug. 17 they have reached a merger agreement that will extend the reach of both providers throughout north Metro Atlanta.

The agreement, if approved by the Georgia Attorney General’s Office, would create a system with 1,479 beds, nearly 21,000 employees and 3,500 physicians on staff.

It could be operational by 2018. The agreement consummates a two-year courtship between the two systems.

Neither side has disclosed which points of the negotiations slowed the process. But Northside is by far the larger and most financially sound of the two.

New home construction at pre-recession levels For the first time, new home construction closing numbers are competing with pre-recession levels. And it’s nowhere near enough.

According to GEOFF SMITH numbers just Assurance Financial, released from gsmith@lendtheway.com Smart Real Estate Data, there was an estimated 5,566 new construction closings in the 2nd quarter of this year, and 10,182 closings in the first half of this year.

These numbers are similar to numbers posted in the first half of 2008, which was right before the collapse.

And this trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down. In the second quarter, 7,110 new home permits were issued – the most permits issued for a quarter since third quarter of 2007. So clearly, with all of this new construction going on, we must be flush with new homes on the market.

Right? Wrong.

In most markets, it is hard to find and buy a house. Housing inventory is measured by the number of months it would take to sell out all existing listings with no new listings coming to market. Most experts agree that a healthy market is with 6 months of supply. At that mark, home values are increasing at a safe pace. With too much inventory, sellers are competing for limited buyers, and home values can actually start to drop. With too little inventory, buyers are competing for limited houses, and home values rise too fast. Right now, inventory is historically low at an average 3.29 months. It’s the lowest level since they’ve been recording this type of data. And that number is trending downward. Inventory averaged 3.63 months the same time last year.

And in keeping with the laws of supply and demand, the invisible

hand has pushed home prices up an average of 5.6 percent over the last year. In some markets it’s less than that, and in others it’s much more.

You might think that since the pace of new construction is back to pre-recession levels, and inventory is still low, then resales are probably down. You might think that, but you’d be wrong. In the second quarter of this year, the metro area set an all-time record for the most resale closings in a quarter with 25,992 closings. So why is inventory so low then?

Here is why: we are adding more new homebuyers to the market than homes being built. Over the last three years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the metro area’s population has grown by an average of just over 20,000 people per quarter, or about 7,000 people a month. Not all of those people need a home because families are included in those numbers, but add to those numbers the amount of first-time homebuyers trying to move out of their parents’ basements and you have more new homebuyers than new homes coming to market. And this trend doesn’t look like it will be changing anytime soon. So that is leaving the door open for other types of housing to grow.

“All around Atlanta’s core are

apartment buildings going up leftand-right,” said Mitchel Palm, senior associate with Smart Real Estate Data. “That is where a lot of these people moving to Atlanta are residing.”

Homebuilders are trying to do their part, but Palm says a lack of affordable, developable land, inflation on building materials and a lack of skilled labor are sucking the wind out of their sails.

An interesting point that stuck out to me is that we are nearing peak levels of new residential construction, but our inventory is shrinking. The metro area has become massive. We are operating in much deeper waters than we were just nine years ago.

The city’s success is attracting people from all over the world.

Graves Overhead Doors earns national certification

New craft beer lounge coming to Roswell Tap & Six wins right to sample by the glass

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A recent ordinance change in Roswell is bringing a new kind of craft beer market to the area. Tap & Six, a craft beer lounge, will be the first of its kind in Roswell.

Created by Roswell resident David Craig and his son Ethan, Tap & Six will allow visitors to not only take home craft beers, but also sample them in the store.

“In the entire Atlanta area and most of Georgia you can’t go in one place and try out craft beer, drink it on site, and shop for packaged goods you can take home,” David said.

“That’s what is unique about it.”

The single-story shop will be at 23 Oak St. and will occupy 3,500 square feet. Inside, the Craigs plan to offer 200 different types of craft beers curated from thousands of breweries.

Customers can try, buy and create six-packs to take home or just enjoy them there.

“We want to get the best of the best and make it available in one place,” David said.

“It’s a place to bring your laptop and work during the day, stop in with the kids and other parents after sporting events or head to for a night out.”

As a father and son tag team, the Craigs will both bring their talents to the table and support each other with their different areas of expertise. David has managed multiple businesses in the past, while Ethan graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in entrepreneurship and started his own coffee shop in Boone, N.C. Their skills complement one another.

“He’s going to bring his experience from the retail side of things and I’ll bring my experience from running businesses,” David said.

“We’ve never done something quite like this before, so it’ll be a new experience for both of us. But, as long as we have fun with it and

leverage what we know how to do, I know it’ll turn out great.”

Regardless of their differences, the two have a “keen” interest in craft beer. David said that this experience has brought the two of them closer together as a family.

The Craigs were able to bring the concept to Roswell thanks to an amendment to the city’s business alcohol ordinance. Previously, the ordinance required business to sell at least 51 percent food with alcohol. Those restrictions changed June 12 however, when the council unanimously voted to allow craft beer and wine markets to sell beverages.

Craig said that Roswell Inc was instrumental in their efforts to get this ordinance changed and bring their concept to the City Council.

Under the new amended ordinance, the markets cannot sell distilled spirits and will have limited hours of operation. They can operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to midnight on weekends and will be permitted only in areas currently zoned to allow consumption on the premises.

David and Ethan plan to open Tap & Six late this fall.

Aging, as my wife’s grandmother used to say, is not for the faint of heart.

But it does bring with it certain perks. You know things like wisdom.

Age does bring another perk, however, and that’s the “senior discount.”

Now that I’ve reached “that certain age,” I find that I’m able to take advantage of occasional “seniors” deals – including things like special pricing at the Golden Corral buffet. It’s the occasional reward for making it this far more or less intact. Life is good.

But the best age-related perk I’ve seen in a long time is the deal of a lifetime on a lifetime senior pass (specifically, the “America the Beautiful” national parks and federal recreational lands pass) to federal recreation sites.

It covers a very long list of places I’d love to go, among them Atlanta’s own Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

For many years, I’ve bought an annual parking pass to CRNRA. Having that pass meant I didn’t have to worry about paying the daily parking fee every time I visit for fishing or hiking.

The $35 annual fee was a bargain.

But now that I’m older, if not wiser, the deal suddenly becomes even sweeter.

Here’s the deal: If you’re 62 or older, and for a very limited time, you can get a lifetime senior pass for $10, if you pick it up in person, or $20, if you order online.

Yes. Lifetime senior pass. $10.

This lifetime senior pass is an incredible bargain if you enjoy Georgia’s outdoors – but (as they say) you’ve got to act fast. Really, you do. On Aug. 28, the lifetime senior pass goes up to $80.

Until then, you can purchase the $10 lifetime senior pass in person at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area headquarters visitor center at the Island Ford Unit.

What does this pass do for you?

Basically, it covers entrance or access for the pass owner and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at a host of federally operated recreation sites across the country.

In addition to covering the daily entrance fee at sites like our very own Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (and that’s of particular interest if you, like me, enjoy trout fishing and hiking), the pass covers “access to, and use of, BLM, FWS, NPS, Reclamation, USDA-FS and USACE sites that charge entrance or standard amenity fees (day use).”

That’s a fancy way of saying that, at those sites, the daily parking fee goes away.

Additionally, the pass provides a 50 percent discount on some “expanded amenity fees” at those site, including such things as camping. I plan to take advantage of that part of the picture this fall.

Note that this is not a state parks pass and that it does not cover parking fees or admission to state parks and state historic sites. You’ll still need a state park pass for that. But at federal

sites you’ll be covered.

Even after the new fee structure goes into effect, however, there will still be a great deal out there for seniors. Starting Aug. 28, a new $20 annual Senior Pass will become available. There are many other pass options too, including several for those who have not yet reached my exalted and distinguished age. Those passes are a fine deal too – but if you can get in on the lifetime pass, that’s even better.

Remember: 62 or over. Senior pass.

Great price, but only for a few days more. Get it now because (don’t forget) it goes up on Aug. 28.

(NAPSI)—On average, boomers—an estimated 74.9 million Americans aged 53 to 71 in 2017—can expect to live to around age 85, according to the Social Security Administration.

Milton enters new era with win over Alpharetta Eagles earn first win under new coach with 31-9 victory

second half. “[Alpharetta] was getting the best of us in the first half,” Clack said. “But we kept telling the defense, if you keep doing your job, just trust that the offense is going to come around.”

And that they did.

Alpharetta had taken a 6-3 lead with a 38-yard field goal by Dylan Schorr as time expired in the second quarter after Milton was held to just 96 total yards in the first half. But Milton’s defense, which Clack said kept the Eagles in the game the first two quarters, heeded his words and held Alpharetta to a single field goal in the second half.

“That trust was on display tonight,” Clack said. “Without it, I don’t think we come away with a win.

Milton’s defense held the Raiders to 299 total yards. Alpharetta was just 3-18 on third down conversions and was held to two field goals on two trips to the red zone.

“We preach that we own the red zone,” Clack said. “To bend and not break and hold that talented team to three field goals, that’s probably what I’m most proud about the whole night.”

While its defense continued to stymie Alpharetta’s talented offense in the second half, Milton’s offense did come around, scoring four touchdowns and tripling its yardage output from the first half.

The Eagles rushed for 246 yards, led by Solomon Vanhorse with 112 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jordan Yates added 75 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown.

Yates was 8-16 through the air for 163 yards with a passing touchdown to Syaire Waters.

The Raiders had their chances. Two catchable interceptions were dropped in their own red zone, and a touchdown was called back due to a penalty. Jaycee Horn returned a punt for a touchdown early in the game, but the score was negated by a blindside block, a rule implemented this year by the GHSA. Offensively, Alpharetta looked to move the ball methodically down the field on short plays, but Milton’s defense seemed to sniff out the majority of bubble screens and zone reads they faced.

Alpharetta quarterback Matthew Downing went 21-37 for 174 yards and led the Raiders in rushing yards with 70.

there is much room for improvement.

But he did say the team has continued to show progress, exemplified by Friday’s monumental win.

“Every time I watch these kids compete they are raising the bar,” he said.

“I’m just so stinking proud of them.”

Class AAAAAAA South Forsyth 17, Roswell 14 (2OT) South Forsyth outlasted a new-look Roswell for a double-overtime victory in the Corky Kell Classic at Georgia State Stadium.

Both offenses struggled to find success in regulation, and the game went into overtime after regulation ended in a 7-7 tie.

Both teams scored from quarterback rushes to open the first overtime period before South went up 17-14 with a field goal. A sack and false start penalty forced Roswell into a fourth and long from the 28-yard line. The Hornets waived the long field goal attempt and opted to go for the conversion.

After scrambling, quarterback Cordel Littlejohn’s short pass found Kamonty Jett, who streaked toward the first down marker but was tackled short of the line, earning South Forsyth a monumental victory against the twotime defending state champions.

Roswell’s loss was its first of the regular season since Halloween of 2014.

Sequoyah 30, North Forsyth 28 North Forsyth came up short in a back-and-forth affair, with a late Sequoyah field goal proving to be the game-winner.

North trailed 14-0 before climbing back to take a 28-21 lead in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs scored, but North’s Honus Wagner blocked the PAT to keep North in the lead.

However, Sequoyah would go ahead with a field goal in the final three minutes, and forced North to punt with

1:41 remaining. Sequoyah ran out the clock to deny North another chance.

North’s offense compiled 293 total yards with Jonathan Perez rushing for 123 yards and a touchdown.

West Forsyth 31, Woodstock 14 West Forsyth led throughout head coach Shawn Cahill’s debut earning a win over Woodstock for the second straight year.

West led 10-0 after the first quarter and held a 24-14 lead early in the fourth before putting the game away with a 21-yard rushing score.

Though Woodstock quarterback Garrett Bass threw for 249 yards, North intercepted him four times.

Class AAAAAA Pickens 54, Chattahoochee 30 For the second straight year, Chattahoochee lost a lopsided affair against Pickens.

Pickens scored throughout the game and led 27-16 at the break before adding another 27 points in the second half. Though Hooch scored twice in the third quarter, a scoreless fourth saw Pickens run away with the win.

The loss was Chattahoochee’s seventh straight in a season-opening game.

Lassiter 45, Johns Creek 21 Johns Creek lost its opening game under new head coach Matt Helmerich against a talented Lassiter Trojans team. The game was riddled with multiple turnovers from both squads.

Lanier 33, Northview 24 Northview led 17-7 at the half in head coach James Thompson’s debut, but the Titans couldn’t hold on, falling to Lanier for the second straight year.

Lanier scored 13 unanswered points to open the second half and take a 20-17 lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Titans’ quarterback Colton McDaniel found Mac Bolton for a second touchdown to reclaim the lead.

However, Lanier would score a touchdown with 3:25 remaining to regain the lead.

On the ensuing Northview drive, McDaniel would be intercepted and Lanier would score again to secure the win.

Blessed Trinity 28, Westminster 0 In a rematch of the 2015 Class AAA state championship game, Blessed Trinity shut out rival Westminster to win its sixth straight season opener.

Steele Chambers scored three rushing touchdowns and BT’s defense held Westminster scoreless on multiple trips to the red zone.

Mount Pisgah was finally able to extend its lead at two scores with a touchdown pass from Jacob Cendoya to David Woodward and hold on for its third straight win over the Golden Bears.

South Forsyth downs Roswell in double overtime, 17-14 Hornets suffer first regular season loss since 2014

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Saturday’s Corky Kell Classic between Roswell and South Forsyth had all the making of a heavyweight bout.

In one corner sat underdog South Forsyth, a talented team looking to project itself into the ranks of 7A’s elite programs. In the other corner was Roswell, wearing the two-time state runner up belt with questions left to be answered with a new coaching staff and

22 new starters.

The fight proved to go the distance, with South Forsyth outlasting Roswell 17-14 in double overtime at Georgia State Stadium Friday night.

The first few rounds proved a stalemate as neither team found the scoreboard in the first half.

South appeared poised to strike first early in the second quarter on Roswell’s 1-yard line, but a botched handoff was recovered by Roswell. Later in the quarter, South came up with their own goal line stand with a sack and two incompletions that turned over possession on downs.

Roswell finally broke through midway through the third with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Cordel Littlejohn to Walt Warren. Littlejohn went 12-20

for 120 yards.

But South would knot the game early in the fourth with a 17-yard touchdown rush from Jared Honey, who compiled over 100 yards rushing in the game.

Neither team found the end zone again until overtime when both teams scored touchdowns quickly.

Littlejohn rushed 15-yards for a score on Roswell’s first overtime play, but South responded two plays later with a rushing touchdown from its quarterback, Cal Morris.

South took a 17-14 lead with a 23yard field goal in the second overtime period, forcing Roswell to score in order to keep the contest going.

But Roswell was quickly backed up by a Ryan LaFlamme sack and a

penalty. On fourth and long, Roswell decided to go for the conversion, and potential win.

“We have a freshman kicker and it was just out of his range,” Roswell head coach Matt Kemper said. “We had to try and convert it and try and win.”

Littlejohn found Kamonty Jett on a short pass on the attempted conversion, with Jett streaking toward the sideline and the first down marker. But, Jett would fall short, and South earned a pivotal win for its program.

Though the Hornets suffered their first regular season loss since Halloween of 2014, Kemper said he was still proud of his inexperienced team.

Blessed Trinity opens season with win over rivals Titans’ new defense blanks Wildcats, 28-0

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Blessed Trinity saw immediate success with its new defensive scheme as the Titans pitched a 28-0 shutout over rivals Westminster Friday night.

The Titans, with new defensive coordinator John Thompson, held Westminster to just 178 yards of total offense, forced two interceptions and stopped the Wildcats twice on fourth and goal.

“The defense has looked more comfortable and their effort was good,” head coach Tim McFarlin said. “It was their first time in a game situation under their new leadership, and though we had a few hiccups, to me that’s

Offensively, the Titans compiled 314 yards, and McFarlin said he was particular pleased with his offensive line that featured five new starters.

but I thought we were able to run the ball pretty well,” he said.

More than half of BT’s offensive yards came on the ground, with Steele Chambers rushing for 75 yards and three touchdowns. Chambers shared rushes with sophomore Elijah Green, who rushed for 67 yards.

“One of the bright spots was Green,” McFarlin said. “He played exceptionally well and what that does is gives us a two-back situation.”

In addition to his inexperienced line doing well to open holes, McFarlin said fullbacks Jake Rudolph, Mickey Skole and JR Bivens all had “great games.”

Quarterback Jake Smith went 7-9 passing for 146 yards, including a 79yard touchdown to receiver Will Carlton.

Friday’s win not only kicked off BT’s season with a victory, it was a moraleboosting win over a rival. The teams last met in the Class AAA state cham-

pionship game, which saw Westminster deal a heartbreaking loss to the Titans in overtime.

“The last time we played was a great ballgame and it was a shame someone had to lose,” McFarlin said. “It just happened to be for a state championship.”

“Of course you think about that rivalry, but at the end of the day this is a different team,” he said.

Though McFarlin said his team still has kinks to work out, he was pleased with his team’s shut out performance.

“The good thing about early games is it gives you time to learn about your team,” he said. “I’m pleased with how they played and was pleasantly surprised with the effort and execution.”

The Titans will battle another rival, St. Pius X, this Friday at home. Blessed Trinity has won the last four meetings, including a 22-18 comeback win last year.

hard the kids played,” he said. “South Forsyth is a good football team and well coached. We hung in there and stood toe to toe with them.”

Kemper was impressed with his defense’s performance, which held South to just over 200 yards of total offense.

“The defense was the strength of the team last night,” he said. “That’s vital as the offensive continues to gel. We tackled well for the most part and had a big goal line stand. We’re looking to build on that.”

On offense, Kemper said the team will focus on consistency.

“We felt like we left a touchdown out there,” he said. “We took care of the football, but we need to learn how to finish drives.”

The Hornets will have an extra week to prepare for their second game against Central Gwinnett.

“At this point in the season, everyone has some bumps and bruises and the bye will allow us to get healthy,” Kemper said. “We will regroup and get back at in two weeks.”

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek head coach Matt Helmerich said the 45-21 score from Friday’s tilt against Lassiter was not indicative of the game itself.

“Lassiter is one of the top teams in 7A and we hung right with them,” Helmerich said. “We played them tough and fought all game, but we had two devastating turnovers when we were driving.”

Both teams committed multiple turnovers, but the two by the Gladiators proved to be the difference.

With Johns Creek on the doorstep of a touchdown, a botched snap was scooped up by a Lassiter defender and returned 98-yards for a touchdown. A fallen Johns Creek receiver also ended with a pick-six for the Trojans.

For Helmerich, those miscues were the difference.

“You take away those two plays and it’s a very tight ballgame against a good team,” he said.

Though the night ended in a loss, Helmerich said he was still generally satisfied with his team’s performance, including his offense that bested Las-

“We had 465 total yards and ran the ball effectively. I was pleased with the offensive,” he said.

Quarterback Zach Gibson put up big numbers, throwing for over 300 yards on 45 passes with three touchdowns. Receiver/tight end Zach Williams had 150 yards receiving while being covered by a Michigan State commit.

However, Helmerich did say the offense will need to focus on “overall operations” this week.

“The offense is all about general knowledge,” he said. “And it usually takes a few weeks to gel.”

Defensively, Helmerich said the goal of Friday’s game was to limit the pass, something his team did well in holding Lassiter to just 4-13 passing.

“The defense played well for the

most part,” he said. “Lassiter is a pain to prepare for. They have multiple formations and motions and their quarterback was elusive. They hurt us on the run but we are getting better,” he said.

The defense was also put into a few tough situations following special teams plays, Helmerich said.

Following the loss, Helmerich said the Gladiators’ focus will be improving each week.

“We improved leaps and bounds from the scrimmage to week one,” he said. “That could have been a back and forth game, but the kids got some confidence.”

Johns Creek will take on another 7A opponent this Friday against North Forsyth.

“I won’t say it’s a must win, but we need to get a win going into the bye week,” Helmerich said.

The proceeds raised by the team’s exhausting swim will help pay for the team’s membership at Core Physique where they plan to hold their strength training for the 2017-18 season.
