ROSWELL, Ga. — A couple of friends recently reported that they were robbed at gunpoint during a trip to a local pool.

The two friends said they were partying at the Raintree Drive pool when close to midnight, a man with a gun approached them.

They said that the man asked them if they knew anyone who sold marijuana.

Trailer, motorcycle stolen from vacant property MILTON, Ga. — A cargo trailer, motorcycle and furniture valued at nearly $5,000 was stolen from a vacant property on Birmingham Highway sometime between Aug. 5 and Aug. 12.

The thief took the victims’ car keys, house keys, cell phones and wallets.

The suspect was described as a tall, thin man in his 20s with a “military” haircut.

Thieves snatch phone from 11-year old boy JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — An 11-year old’s cell phone was stolen after suspects grabbed the device while asking for directions.

The incident occurred Aug. 13 while the boy was riding his bicycle outside Road, Atlanta, was arrested Aug. 3 on Old Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell, for possession of marijuana, possession of meth and possession of drug-related objects. ►► Randolph Keith Axson, 49, of no known address, was arrested Aug. 3 on Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell, for possession of cocaine and possession of drug-related objects.

The victim’s mother attempted to use the Find my iPhone app to locate the whereabouts of the phone and suspects, but the phone was displayed as off-line.

The last ping of the phone was at the intersection of State Bridge Road and Medlock Crossing Parkway.

Treatment for dry eye syndrome is usually initiated with over-the-counter lubricating drops called artificial tears. Artificial tears serve to manually moisten the eyes and supplement the natural tears when the patient is symptomatic.

Many drug store and brand names exist, varying from a thin watery consistency to a thicker gel form, and they work well for the majority of patients. Be wary of drops that simply “get the red out” – they are not intended to lubricate the eye’s surface.

Freedom From Dry Eyes

Lifestyle changes can also help patients with dry eye syndrome. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in walnuts, salmon, and tuna, improves the oil layer and leads to better lubrication of the ocular surface. For patients with diets deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil and flaxseed oil nutritional supplements are recommended. Additionally, using a humidifier at home and work can also help alleviate dry eye symptoms.

People who spend most of their workdays on a computer can develop digital eye fatigue. Typically, an individual blinks his or her eye every 5 to 6 seconds.

Blinking allows the surface of the eye to be replenished with tears and feel comfortable. This rate diminishes by half when concentrating on a digital screen and can lead to digital eye fatigue. Symptoms of digital eye fatigue are similar to that of Dry Eye Syndrome and include eyestrain, intermittent blurred vision, and feeling of soreness or tiredness around the eyes, especially at the end of a long day. Patient experiencing these symptoms should considering taking frequent breaks throughout the day. The 20/20/20 rule has been developed to help individuals who experience digital eye fatigue. Every 20 minutes, you should take a break away from your computer for 20 seconds by looking at something 20 feet away. Following this simple guide will give your eyes some time to relax, to blink naturally, and to refresh your tear film.

Many patients experience more constant or chronic symptoms requiring further treatment. Preservative-free artificial tears, which are available in individual vials, can be beneficial to individuals with long-standing history of dry eye syndrome that have become poorly responsive to bottled artificial tears and that are prone to irritation from the preservatives. Additionally, thicker ointment formulations of artificial tears, such as Refresh PM or Genteal, can be applied to the eyes right before bedtime to prevent desiccation of the eye surface over the course of the night. This is especially helpful in individuals who have exposure of their eyes from an incomplete closure of their eyelids.

Punctal plugs may be recommended to block the drainage of tears into the tear ducts of the upper and lower eyelids. These plugs serve as mechanical barriers and help to preserve the tear film volume.

Often, patients with Dry Eye Syndrome have associated chronic inflammation on the eye surface. A short course of low-dose topical steroids, such as lotemax (loteprednol etabonate), can be employed to reduce inflammation. Another ant-inflammatory prescription medication cyclosporine 0.05% (brand name Restasis) has been approved for long-term use in Dry Eye Syndrome. It has been shown to not only reduce inflammation on the eye surface but also help improve tear production. Most recently, lifitegrast 5% (brand name Xiidra) was also approved as an anti-inflammatory medication for use in patients with Dry Eye Syndrome. Both of these medications have similar side effects, such as temporary eye irritation, discomfort, or blurred vision, but overall are tolerated well with good efficacy.

Eyelid disease can also contribute to dry eye syndrome. Meibomian glands located on the eyelids produce the normal oil layer of the tear film. Disruption of this oil layer due to clogged or poorly functioning meibomian glands or make-up residue can lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. Keeping clean healthy eyelids on a consistent basis can help to ease dry eye symptoms. Here are two techniques that can be utilized:

Warm compresses: Soak a clean washcloth with hot water. Fold the washcloth into a roll and hold it in contact with both eyelids until the cloth cools. Reheat the cloth and repeat this procedure for at least five minutes. Applying direct warm compresses to the eyelids aids in unblocking these glands and improving oil gland function.

Lid scrubs: Following these warm compresses, lightly wash the eyelashes and eyelids with your eyes closed using a mild soap, such as baby shampoo, diluted in one capful of water. You can use either your finger or a soft washcloth. These lid scrubs assist in removing residual make-up debris and bacteria from the eyelids.

For patients with severe eyelid disease, an antibiotic named doxycycline may be used for a short duration to reduce the normal bacterial load of the eyelids. Doxycycline also has anti-inflammatory properties to decrease eyelid-associated inflammation.

When patients with severe dry eyes fail conventional therapies, customized contact lenses called scleral lenses may be necessary. These lenses serve as a moisture chamber to continuously bathe the ocular surface with lubricating drops.

Autologous serum tears can also be an option for severe dry eye patients. Blood is drawn from the patient; subsequently, the plasma is separated from the red blood cells and then combined with preservative free artificial tears. Serum tears contain many of the biologically active components of natural tears that help to improve the eye surface and treat Dry Eye Syndrome.

Various new therapeutic modalities continue to emerge for the management of dry eye syndrome. Patients with dry eye syndrome should seek a consultation with an ophthalmologist specializing in dry eye management to better understand their condition and learn about their treatment options.

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – It took a great deal of effort on the part of the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau, but the City Council allowed the agency to use its funds to pay for its No. 1 request: to fund a perENDRES forming arts feasibility study.

The City Council voted 7-0 Aug. 21 to allow up to $50,000 of CVB collections to fund the arts feasibility study.

The Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau is an ZAPROWSKI authority that uses the city’s hotel/motel tax to fund projects that promote local tourism, or as it is often more succinctly put: to put heads on beds.

In its efforts to fill hotel rooms, the CVB made the feasibility study its top goal. It has the full support of the arts community, but apparently there are rumblings behind the scenes that the City Council listens to.

Rejected on its first try, the CVB appeared before the City Council Monday to renew the request accompanied by the members of the arts community.

“Our organization feels this is an appropriate use of CVB funds,” Shelby Marzen, said Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau director. “This is a great opportunity to help position economic development efforts for tourism.

It is Georgia’s fifth largest industry.”

Wayne Baughman, director and conductor of the Johns Creek Symphony and a 29-year Johns Creek resident, also spoke up for the study.

“Speaking on behalf of all of those who care about the arts and this city, we need a performing arts center,” he said. “The CVB has made this study its top priority. We think it is a good idea that visitors should pay for this study.”

He pointed out that the funding is not coming from the city’s general fund.

Rather it is the tax collected by the CVB that is supposed to be used to promote tourism in the city.

Marzen agreed. Speaking after the meeting, she called it a “catalyst project” that could reap benefits for Johns Creek’s budding tourism as well as for the residents of the city.

“The great thing about tourism is it is a real driver to put heads in beds.

But beyond that, it has an economic impact for restaurants and businesses throughout the city,” she said.

It would also be a huge amenity for the residents of Johns Creek.

Councilman Steve Broadbent made the motion to approve releasing the funds and Councilman Lenny Zaprowski seconded.

Councilwoman Stephanie Endres tried to stall the motion, asking it be deferred to the 2018 budget.

“Is this a priority now? Or at a later time?” she asked.

She wanted to know “who would own the project? And did the project

The CVB story so far Earlier this year, the Johns Creek Convention and Visitors Bureau, supported by a group representing the Johns Creek arts community, gave the City Council its top priorities for spending its collections. At the top of the list was its request to fund a $50,000 performing arts center feasibility study.

Instead, city leaders acted on a motion by Councilwoman Stephanie Endres to fund only half the study if the arts community could raise the other $25,000. The arts community itself is a collection of mostly not-for-profit organizations or individuals. Fundraising never materialized.

Monday night, the arts community and the CVB renewed the request to allow the CVB to use its funds to support tourism in the city for the study.

Mayor Mike Bodker said those were the kinds of questions the study would answer.

Zaprowski opposed delaying the study further and said there was no reason to do so. These are not the city’s tax dollars but funding to be disbursed for CVB projects and tourism, he said.

“The reality is, we don’t have any other CVB projects to spend this year’s budget on,” Zaprowski pointed out.

“I am not for building a performing arts center with city tax dollars, but a performing arts center would be a huge amenity for the city if we could get it.”

The bottom line for Zaprowski was this was CVB dollars.

“And this project is No. 1 on their list,” he said.

Councilman Jay Lin said he supported the study as well.

“I totally agree with this $50,000 investment. And it’s just a start,” he said.

“If there needs to be $30 million or $50 million to build it, then this study will be a viable tool.”

Councilman Chris Coughlin agreed to support the study as well. He agreed tourism “puts heads in beds.”

Davenport was something of the “E.F. Hutton” on council. She didn’t often speak, but when she did, other council members listened.

She had never held office before when she ran against incumbent Karen Richardson.

The 2013 elections had been the bitterest ever for the city.

The incumbent City Council was in open rebellion against the mayor and sought to have Mike Bodker ousted with a “special investigation.”

Instead, it was the incumbents who lost, and Davenport was one of a raft of new council members who came on board over the next two years.

“It is with a heavy heart that I an-

nounce that I will not seek re-election in the upcoming City Council race,” Davenport said in a statement. “My intent four years ago was to serve my community well and to lend my business knowledge, common sense judgDAVENPORT ment and a no-agenda approach to our city government.

“I have kept that promise to the citizens and to myself. I will continue my volunteer work with non-profit organizations throughout the city to further serve our community.

It has been my honor and privilege to work with Mayor Bodker, our council members and amazing staff at City Hall. I deeply appreciate the support I have been shown and the opportunity to serve my fellow citizens.”

Davenport took on one of the hardest tasks over the last four years when she agreed to join Bodker to negotiate an agreement with the billboard companies that had won a judgment against

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker qualified Monday for re-election as the city’s mayor. It would be his fourth term.

“We have worked as a team to successfully build the nicest city with the highest standards and best quality of life available in Georgia,” said Bodker.

“Johns Creek is widely recognized as the safest city with the lowest crime rate of any city of its size, anywhere. We enjoy the best schools, an extremely low unemployment rate, and growing parks and recreational programs for families.

“These successes don’t happen by accident. They are the result of mature leadership that also looks out for taxpayers,” said Bodker.

“With one more term, we will be able to complete the mission that we started out to do when we first incorporated our city.”

He said he wanted to make sure traffic relief plans are implemented, new sidewalks are put in and all

neighborhoods are repaved.

He pledged to keep taxes down, and to focus on keeping Johns Creek moving forward.

He was the leader of the successful effort to BODKER pass the 2006 voter referendum in creating the City of Johns Creek.

He has been leader in civic and community groups and is a founding board member and chairman of the Johns Creek Foundation. He is a member of Chabad of North Fulton and the PTA. Bodker graduated from Lakeside High School and earned a BBA in Accounting from the University of Georgia.

Bodker and his wife Lisa have three children between them. The Bodkers are fans of Chattahoochee High School Cougar football.

Jones Bridge project sent back to drawing board Council requests new Morton entrance for residential project

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – A two-hour rezoning hearing for a 7.45-acre residential project on Jones Bridge Road ended when the City Council told the developer to redesign the entrance for Morton Road.

BODKER The development has been remanded to the September 25 council meeting.

Developer Michael K. Dye of Edge City Properties, wants to build a 17home subdivision on Jones Bridge Road that more or less wraps around Fulton County water towers.

Having cleared the hurdle of an administrative error that failed to withdraw his application, Dye was able to bring forward his new plan for the

property.

However it met stiff resistance from neighboring communities, The Gates and Windbridge.

While Dye argued his R-4 density of 2.28 units per acre were in line with his neighbors, he still faced pushback for the project.

The Gates Homeowners Association President Mary Beth Cooper said the project “did not blend well” with the existing homes. She also questioned the variance for front setbacks that gave Dye’s lots larger backyards, which for the most part adjoin The Gates subdivision.

Cooper said the topography just did not allow the number of homes to fit.

Ultimately the issues of drainage and the entrance to the property were the sticking points.

Drainage issues were a big issue for Cooper. Despite Dye’s assurances that drainage could be safely routed on the north end, she was skeptical.

It also bothered Gates’ residents that the entrance was sited on Jones Bridge Road rather than on Morton Road.

Dye pointed out he would need an easement for a retaining wall to use Morton, and he did not think the neighborhood would be receptive.

Nevertheless, Mayor Mike Bodker thought it was the best solution.

However, it would also require moving the detention pond which would also require easements and disturbing five or six Gates’s properties.

Cooper said she was amenable to that idea and believed the Gates properties affected would be amenable to “minor disturbances” because it addressed the main issue of drainage.

“Drainage is everything,” she told Bodker.

She said her neighborhood would agree to the new drainage plan and a Morton entrance for the property.

Bodker made the motion which passed unanimously to defer and have Dye redraw his plan.

The mayor said if The Gates community was willing to go along with a new entrance on Morton and the new drainage plan, it might be the answer for everyone.

Dye was noncommittal, but faced with yet another deferral, he said he would do as asked.

Bring back civility to local politics With the national news showing the country in a constant state of political turmoil, I am calling on all participants in the local elections to take a different path – it is called civility.

HATCHER HURD In covering local Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com politics for more than 30 years, I have seen the descent of local political races devolve more and more into a mirror of statewide and national races.

I’m talking about the adage “All’s fair in love, war and politics.”

As with most trite sayings, it is not true but rather an excuse to ignore the norms of civility in public life. Also, I have found that those who indulge most in mudslinging do so because they do not have the faith in the value of their own ideas.

Elected office, especially at the local level, is still a public service. Most people enter into it with that thought in mind.

It is not uncommon to come into politics with a sense of purpose and mission. The trouble starts when the purpose takes on the trappings of a cause. Then, in their minds, it becomes a contest of good over evil.

And oh what evil things people do in the name of “the greater purpose.”

The truth is, those who stoop to low methods do so because they don’t have the ability to convince others of

Handel pays visit to Emory Johns

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Sixth District Congresswoman Karen Handel was touring the district for her first trip back home since winning the special election this summer.

She said she is settling in well in Washington and getting to work.

“I was surprised at how quickly I was able to get integrated into the flow of things,” Handel said during her tour of Emory Johns Creek Hospital.

“The cooperation of the Georgia [Congressional] Delegation has been amazing,” she said.

She was especially glad for the help as a freshman congresswoman having to find her way around the House with no experienced staff to help her.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price’s staff had either followed Price into his new job or already found other jobs on The Hill.

“From Day One I had no one to even answer the phone,” she said.

But the members of the Georgia House Delegation were quick to provide help and get her clued into the routine of things.

“They have been amazing,” she said.

What has surprised Handel is how most members of Congress are focused on the individual legislation that they are pushing rather than stepping back to look at the “greater whole or good.”

“But I think we have to keep our eyes on the big picture,” she said.

Another adjustment has been to deal with the amount of walking representatives have to do.

“Walking back and forth from your offices to The Hill and back teaches you the importance of a good pair of shoes,” Handel said. “It’s three-and-a-half

And while there is a lot of attention paid to the legislation before Congress, she realizes she will have to pay some dues before she is going to get much attention.

“I get it. I’m the new kid on the block,” she said. “But I am already serving on committees, and those committees will give me ample opportunities to serve.”

She has been assigned to the Education in the Workforce Committee and the Judiciary Committee – two diverse areas, she said.

A big topic for the Judiciary is the opioid epidemic that is ravaging the nation. That was one of the key topics she was asking about in her visit with

They discussed not only the apparent ease with which opioids can be dispensed for relatively mild pain, but the rise in synthetic opioids that are hitting the streets right here in North Fulton that are 50 to 100 times more potent than prescribed opioids.

“And often the street sellers and buyers don’t know what they are using,” she said.

By the time one synthetic drug is identified and gets banned, there is a new one on the street, often more deadly than the last.

“We try to get them on the proscribed list as fast as we can, but then they reformulate the drug and it’s not illegal. All they have to do is change one molecule and it is treated as a new drug and goes through the whole process again,” she said.

She sees that aspect of the problem while serving on the Judiciary Committee.

“How to deal with illegal drugs is near the top of the list. But we are also involved with tort reform, especially the protection of intellectual property,” Handel said. “I am one of two non-lawyers on the committee. But I think I bring a different perspective to the issue.”

Handel is also co-sponsoring a bill that provides latitude looking at social media to clamp down on human trafficking.

Then in the fall, Congress is taking up the issue of tax reform.

“I’m optimistic we can get something done there in the House,” she said.

Juried art show highlights local artists

Turnovers costly in Johns Creek’s loss to Lassiter Trojans down Gladiators 45-21 in Helmerich’s debut

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek head coach Matt Helmerich said the 45-21 score from Friday’s tilt against Lassiter was not indicative of the game itself.

“Lassiter is one of the top teams in 7A and we hung right with them,” Helmerich said. “We played them tough and fought all game, but we had two devastating turnovers when we were driving.”

Both teams committed multiple turnovers, but the two by the Gladiators proved to be the difference.

With Johns Creek on the doorstep of a touchdown, a botched snap was scooped up by a Lassiter defender and returned 98-yards for a touchdown. A fallen Johns Creek receiver also ended

with a pick-six for the Trojans.

For Helmerich, those miscues were the difference.

“You take away those two plays and it’s a very tight ballgame against a good team,” he said.

Though the night ended in a loss, Helmerich said he was still generally satisfied with his team’s performance, including his offense that bested Lassiter’s offensive output by nearly 100 yards.

“We had 465 total yards and ran the ball effectively. I was pleased with the offensive,” he said.

Quarterback Zach Gibson put up big numbers, throwing for over 300 yards on 45 passes with three touchdowns. Receiver/tight end Zach Williams had 150 yards receiving while being covered by a Michigan State commit.

However, Helmerich did say the offense will need to focus on “overall operations” this week.

“The offense is all about general knowledge,” he said. “And it usually takes a few weeks to gel.”

Defensively, Helmerich said the goal of Friday’s game was to limit the pass, something his team did well in holding Lassiter to just 4-13 passing.

“The defense played well for the most part,” he said. “Lassiter is a pain

to prepare for. They have multiple formations and motions and their quarterback was elusive. They hurt us on the run but we are getting better,” he said.

The defense was also put into a few tough situations following special teams plays, Helmerich said.

Following the loss, Helmerich said the Gladiators’ focus will be improving each week.

“We improved leaps and bounds from the scrimmage to week one,” he said. “That could have been a back and forth game, but the kids got some confidence.”

Johns Creek will take on another 7A opponent this Friday against North Forsyth.

“I won’t say it’s a must win, but we need to get a win going into the bye week,” Helmerich said.

Johns Creek golfers win junior championship JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Two Johns Creek junior golfers took two of the top three spots in the Chattahoochee Classic Junior Golf Championship played on the challenging Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville on Saturday and Sunday Aug. 12 and 13.

The two day event saw 14 year old Erica Scutt, a freshman at Northview High School, overcome a two-shot deficit going into the final round with a Sunday score of 75 to capture first place by four strokes for a two-day total of 155.

Second place went to McKenzie Mages of Marietta in a play-off with Kate Song of Johns Creek who finished third. Both girls ended regulation play with a total of 159.

The event, sponsored by the Georgia State Golf Association, drew a field of 18 of some of the most accomplished junior players from around the state.

The champion, Scutt, plays out of Olde Atlanta Golf Club in Forsyth County where she is coached by professional Dave Anderson.

Week 1 football recap

Class AAAAAAA South Forsyth 17, Roswell 14 (2OT) South Forsyth outlasted a new-look Roswell for a double-overtime victory in the Corky Kell Classic at Georgia State Stadium.

Both offenses struggled to find success in regulation, and the game went into overtime after regulation ended in a 7-7 tie.

Both teams scored from quarterback rushes to open the first overtime period before South went up 17-14 with a field goal. A sack and false start penalty forced Roswell into a fourth and long from the 28-yard line. The Hornets waived the long field goal attempt and opted to go for the conversion.

After scrambling, quarterback Cordel Littlejohn’s short pass found Kamonty Jett, who streaked toward the first down marker but was tackled short of the line, earning South Forsyth a monumental victory against the twotime defending state champions.

Roswell’s loss was its first of the regular season since Halloween of 2014.

Milton 31, Alpharetta 9 Milton won its first game under head coach Adam Clack as the Eagles used stout defense and a strong offensive second half to down their crosstown rivals. Alpharetta led 6-3 at the half, but Milton would score four touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters while holding Alpharetta to a single field goal.

Milton quarterback Jordan Yates had 238 total yards with a rushing and passing touchdown. Alpharetta’s Dylan Schorr was 3-3 on field goals.

North trailed 14-0 before climbing back to take a 28-21 lead in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs scored, but North’s Honus Wagner blocked the PAT to keep North in the lead.

Pickens scored throughout the game and led 27-16 at the break before adding another 27 points in the second half. Though Hooch scored twice in the third quarter, a scoreless fourth saw Pickens run away with the win.

During a recent blizzard the Lukowiaks’ took a chance and stocked up on sleds and became Toboggan Central.

“Yeah, we’ve taken gambles before.

We’ve gone in on sleds, on ice-melt. So it wasn’t that unusual for us to go for it this time,” Richard Lukowiak said.

Lukowiak said his family decided to gamble again and put in an order for 10,000 solar eclipse safety glasses. Last week it paid off in spades.

“We’re just thankful we have a big parking lot,” he said.

Northside-Gwinnett pact continues hospital merger trend Healthcare system would rank among largest in Georgia

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Northside Hospital and Gwinnett Health System, the parent of Gwinnett Medical Center, announced Aug. 17 they have reached a merger agreement that will extend the reach of both providers throughout north Metro Atlanta.

The agreement, if approved by the Georgia Attorney General’s Office, would create a system with 1,479 beds, nearly 21,000 employees and 3,500 physicians on staff.

It could be operational by 2018. The agreement consummates a two-year courtship between the two systems.

Neither side has disclosed which points of the negotiations slowed the process. But Northside is by far the larger and most financially sound of the two.

It has $1.7 billion in annual revenue through its three hospitals and various care facilities, according to Dun & Bradstreet.

Gwinnett has revenues of $735 million through its two hospitals and other care facilities.

Anchored by Northside Hospital in Sandy Springs and Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, this latest merger will include hospitals in Canton, Cumming and Duluth, as well as cancer treatment centers, imaging centers, urgent care centers and other outpatient locations throughout the state.

Northside and Gwinnett hospital officials say the merger makes sense and will benefit patients as well as the hospitals.

“Northside Hospital is a leader in cancer care, women’s health and specialized surgical care, while Gwinnett Health System has strengths in cardiovascular care, sports medicine and post-acute care,” according to Northside spokeswoman Katherine Watson.

“The service areas are adjacent to one another – ideal for focusing investment on care expansion, overall clinical capacity and improved patient access,”

The merger also makes sense for another reason.

Combining healthcare systems can save on more than costs such as supplies and IT services.

Hospitals are always looking to strengthen their negotiating position with health insurance companies, said Andy Miller, CEO and editor of Georgia Health News, a nonprofit, independent news service that tracks healthcare issues.

The bigger system you are, the better bargain you can drive in terms of reimbursements, he said.

“There are only four or five major hospital systems in the state now and this clearly is a prominent one,” Miller said. “So you’ve got these mega-systems, and I think insurance companies are not happy about this because it’s a constant tug of war between insurers and hospitals in terms of payments for medical services. The more clout you have – either side – the better deal you can strike.”

Northside is in a much better financial position than Gwinnett.

“There’s no doubt about that,” he said. “I don’t know if you can say it was necessary for Gwinnett to make this move, but it makes sense that they did.”

The merger adds to a growing trend in Georgia and the nation where hospitals pool resources to save on costs and expand their footprints.

Last year, Marietta-based WellStar acquired Tenet Healthcare’s five Georgia-based hospitals, including Roswell’s North Fulton Hospital, and formed a new partnership with West Georgia Health in LaGrange, to make it the largest health system in the state with 11 hospitals.

In the wake of the growing trend of hospital mergers, the Northwestern Kellogg School of Management released a study last year which found such mergers tend to result in higher prices for healthcare, generally from 6 percent to 10 percent.

Neither hospital involved in the Northside-Gwinnett merger responded to questions relating to how the agreement might affect patient costs.

New home construction at pre-recession levels For the first time, new home construction closing numbers are competing with pre-recession levels. And it’s nowhere near enough.

According to GEOFF SMITH numbers just reAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com leased from Smart Real Estate Data, there was an estimated 5,566 new construction closings in the 2nd quarter of this year, and 10,182 closings in the first half of this year. These numbers are similar to numbers posted in the first half of 2008, which was right before the collapse.

And this trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down. In the second quarter, 7,110 new home permits were issued – the most permits issued for a quarter since third quarter of 2007. So clearly, with all of this new construction going on, we must be flush with new homes on the market.

Right? Wrong.

In most markets, it is hard to find and buy a house. Housing inventory is measured by the number of months it would take to sell out all existing listings with no new listings coming to market.

Most experts agree that a healthy market is with 6 months of supply. At that mark, home values are increasing at a safe pace.

With too much inventory, sellers are competing for limited buyers, and home values can actually start to drop.

With too little inventory, buyers are competing for limited houses, and home values rise too fast. Right now, inventory is historically low at an average 3.29 months. It’s the lowest level since they’ve been recording this type of data. And that number is trending downward. Inventory averaged 3.63

And in keeping with the laws of supply and demand, the invisible hand has pushed home prices up an average of 5.6 percent over the last year. In some markets it’s less than that, and in others it’s much more.

You might think that since the pace of new construction is back to pre-recession levels, and inventory is still low, then resales are probably down.

You might think that, but you’d be wrong. In the second quarter of this year, the metro area set an all-time record for the most resale closings in a quarter with 25,992 closings. So why is inventory so low then?

Here is why: we are adding more new homebuyers to the market than homes being built.

Over the last three years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the metro area’s population has grown by an average of just over 20,000 people per quarter, or about 7,000 people a month.

Not all of those people need a home because families are included in those numbers, but add to those numbers the amount of first-time homebuyers trying to move out of their parents’ basements and you have more new homebuyers than new homes coming to market.

And this trend doesn’t look like it will be changing anytime soon. So that

is leaving the door open for other types of housing to grow.

“All around Atlanta’s core are apartment buildings going up leftand-right,” said Mitchel Palm, senior associate with Smart Real Estate Data.

“That is where a lot of these people moving to Atlanta are residing.”

Homebuilders are trying to do their part, but Palm says a lack of affordable, developable land, inflation on building materials and a lack of skilled labor are sucking the wind out of their sails.

An interesting point that stuck out to me is that we are nearing peak levels of new residential construction, but our inventory is shrinking. The metro area has become massive. We are operating in much deeper waters than we were just nine years ago. The city’s success is attracting people from all over the world.

New craft beer lounge coming to Roswell Tap & Six wins right to sample by the glass

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A recent ordinance change in Roswell is bringing a new kind of craft beer market to the area. Tap & Six, a craft beer lounge, will be the first of its kind in Roswell.

Created by Roswell resident David Craig and his son Ethan, Tap & Six will allow visitors to not only take home craft beers, but also sample them in the store.

“In the entire Atlanta area and most of Georgia you can’t go in one place and try out craft beer, drink it on site, and shop for packaged goods you can take home,” David said.

“That’s what is unique about it.”

The single-story shop will be at 23 Oak St. and will occupy 3,500 square feet. Inside, the Craigs plan to offer 200 different types of craft beers curated from thousands of breweries.

Customers can try, buy and create six-packs to take home or just enjoy them there.

“We want to get the best of the best and make it available in one place,” David said.

“It’s a place to bring your laptop and work during the day, stop in with the kids and other parents after sporting events or head to for a night out.”

As a father and son tag team, the Craigs will both bring their talents to the table and support each other with their different areas of expertise. David has managed multiple businesses in the past, while Ethan graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in entrepreneurship and started his own coffee shop in Boone, N.C. Their skills complement one another.

“He’s going to bring his experience from the retail side of things and I’ll bring my experience from running businesses,” David said.

“We’ve never done something quite like this before, so it’ll be a new experience for both of

us. But, as long as we have fun with it and leverage what we know how to do, I know it’ll turn out great.”

Regardless of their differences, the two have a “keen” interest in craft beer. David said that this experience has brought the two of them closer together as a family.

The Craigs were able to bring the concept to Roswell thanks to an amendment to the city’s business alcohol ordinance. Previously, the ordinance required business to sell at least 51 percent food with alcohol. Those restrictions changed June 12 however, when the council unanimously voted to allow craft beer and wine markets to sell beverages.

Craig said that Roswell Inc was instrumental in their efforts to get this ordinance changed and bring their concept to the City Council.

Under the new amended ordinance, the markets cannot sell distilled spirits and will have limited hours of operation. They can operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to midnight on weekends and will be permitted only in areas currently zoned to allow consumption on the premises.

David and Ethan plan to open Tap & Six late this fall.

Aging, as my wife’s grandmother used to say, is not for the faint of heart.

But it does bring with it certain perks. You know things like wisdom.

Age does bring another perk, however, and that’s the “senior discount.”

Now that I’ve reached “that certain age,” I find that I’m able to take advantage of occasional “seniors” deals – including things like special pricing at the Golden Corral buffet. It’s the occasional reward for making it this far more or less intact. Life is good.

But the best age-related perk I’ve seen in a long time is the deal of a lifetime on a lifetime senior pass (specifically, the “America the Beautiful” national parks and federal recreational lands pass) to federal recreation sites.

It covers a very long list of places I’d love to go, among them Atlanta’s own Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

For many years, I’ve bought an annual parking pass to CRNRA. Having that pass meant I didn’t have to worry about paying the daily parking fee every time I visit for fishing or hiking.

The $35 annual fee was a bargain.

But now that I’m older, if not wiser, the deal suddenly becomes even sweeter.

Here’s the deal: If you’re 62 or older, and for a very limited time, you can get a lifetime senior pass for $10, if you pick it up in person, or $20, if you order online.

Yes. Lifetime senior pass. $10.

This lifetime senior pass is an incredible bargain if you enjoy Georgia’s outdoors – but (as they say) you’ve got to act fast. Really, you do. On Aug. 28, the lifetime senior pass goes up to $80.

Until then, you can purchase the $10 lifetime senior pass in person at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area headquarters visitor center at the Island Ford Unit.

You can also buy it online, though an additional $10 processing fee applies to online purchases. That makes the online version $20 – still an incredible bargain! To make an online purchase, visit store.usgs.gov/seniorpass. You’ll be sent to yourpassnow. com, where you can purchase the pass.

What does this pass do for you?

Basically, it covers entrance or access for the pass owner and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at a host of federally operated recreation sites across the country.

In addition to covering the daily entrance fee at sites like our very own Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (and that’s of particular interest if you, like me, enjoy trout fishing and hiking), the pass covers “access to, and use of, BLM, FWS, NPS, Reclamation, USDA-FS and USACE sites that charge entrance or standard amenity fees (day use).”

That’s a fancy way of saying that, at those sites, the daily parking fee goes away.

Additionally, the pass provides a 50 percent discount on some “expanded amenity fees” at those site, including such things as camping. I plan to take advantage of that part of the picture this fall.

Note that this is not a state parks pass and that it does not cover parking fees or admission to state parks and state historic sites. You’ll still need a state park pass for that. But at federal

sites you’ll be covered.

Even after the new fee structure goes into effect, however, there will still be a great deal out there for seniors. Starting Aug. 28, a new $20 annual Senior Pass will become available. There are many other pass options too, including several for those who have not yet reached my exalted and distinguished age. Those passes are a fine deal too – but if you can get in on the lifetime pass, that’s even better.

Remember: 62 or over. Senior pass.

Great price, but only for a few days more. Get it now because (don’t forget) it goes up on Aug. 28.

(NAPSI)—On average, boomers—an estimated 74.9 million Americans aged 53 to 71 in 2017—can expect to live to around age 85, according to the Social Security Administration.

A Problem This good news can come at a steep financial cost, however.
