ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Portions of Rucker Road were closed for two hours Aug. 30 morning while police and a GBI bomb squad investigated a suspicious object containing black powder and a fuse.

The road was reopened after the teams determined that it was a homemade, improvised firework.

Residents on Rucker Road called police when a couple found a large round item in their backyard with burn marks on it. Neighbors told police that they heard two loud booms

Mother arrested for racing on highway ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A woman was arrest Aug. 24 for racing on Ga. 400 after she was caught driving over 100 mph.

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is an eye condition in which the normally dome-shaped cornea progressively thins resulting in a cone-like bulging that in turn causes significant visual impairment in some patients. In more severe cases, everyday activities such as driving or reading can be challenging due to poor vision.

Keratoconus is usually first diagnosed in a patient’s teenage years, but can sometimes go undiagnosed until a decade or two later. Researchers estimate that keratoconus affects 1 in 2,000 people, and affects men and women equally with no differences between races or ethnicities. The exact cause of keratoconus is unknown, but some patients have a genetic predisposition to developing it. It is also associated with allergies and other environmental factors, as researchers believe that rubbing the eye can cause the cornea to change shape and weaken, resulting in irregular astigmatism and vision distortion.

The cornea is often called the window of the eye, and helps to refract or bend light coming into the eye. Therefore, abnormalities in the shape of the cornea significantly affect how a patient sees. In the early stages of keratoconus, a patient may observe slight blurring and distortion of their vision. As the disease progresses, a patient may need to have their glasses or contact lens prescription changed frequently to manage their fluctuating vision and change in corneal shape. Keratoconus may progress for the next 10-20 years and then slow or stabilize. In most cases, the disease affects both eyes. Each eye may progress differently, meaning one eye may have a more severe case than the other. The timing of onset between eyes may also vary. Although total blindness is not generally the case for patients with keratoconus, in severe cases, functional vision can be so significantly impaired, that simple everyday activities can be extremely difficult.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – It’s been building for some time, but Alpharetta residents who have been stockpiling glass for recycling may soon see some relief.

The City Council is set to arrange a contract Sept. 11 with Republic Services to begin regular curbside pickups sometime in the coming weeks.

In 2016, Republic notified the city that it would no longer accept glass items mixed in with regular household recyclables. It offered to continue glass recycling as a separate service with a separate bin. The issue was to have been resolved in late June when the city was poised to agree on a monthly rate of $3 a month for separate curbside pickup.

But city officials said at an Aug. 28 City Council meeting that it had been pursuing a plan, introduced late in negotiations, to reinstitute glass recycling mixed in with regular recyclables. That plan proved unsuccessful.

“We have kicked this thing around so many directions,” Councilman Dan Merkel said. “To think this has taken so much time, so many suggestions for $3 extra a month and an extra little tub in your garage, it amazes me that we’ve got to this point.”

Councilman Jim Gilvin agreed.

“I’ve had more constituents ask me about this over the past three weeks than about anything that’s going on in the city,” he said. “I would suggest we move forward.”

Under the current proposal offered by Republic, Alpharetta’s 16,000 households would be charged $3 per month for weekly pickups of glass recyclables. An alternate plan would charge residents $2.39 per month if the service was offered every other week.

Monthly pickup would cost $4.50 per household.

There was some debate among council members as to which plan would be most suited for residents, but comments generally favored weekly pickup to avoid any confusion among residents.

Councilman Chris Owens suggested bi-weekly pickups would reduce wear and tear on city streets, but he was in agreement that a contract had to be signed soon.

“I’ve been asked about this more than just the last three weeks,” he said.

“Neighbors and good friends have given me a hard time about it. It’s time for us to do something.”

An online survey conducted earlier this year showed that residents were

split fairly evenly on options for glass recycling. Options the city had studied included discarding glass with the trash, establishing a central collection site or sites for residents to bring their glass or instituting regular curbside service.

Roswell employee earns professional manager of the year award ROSWELL, Ga. — Danelle Murray, senior technical analyst for the Roswell Environmental Public Works Department, was selected Professional Manager of the Year in Water Resources by the American Public Works Association.

The award was presented at the Georgia Chapter of the association’s annual meeting in Jekyll Island.

Murray was recognized for leading innovations in water system modeling, storm water modeling, promotion of sustainable infrastructure and technical training of water resources staff.

She was also recognized for her service as a technical instructor for the Public Works Management Institute managed by the Carl Vinson Institute of Govern-

Her skills and abilities have allowed Roswell to institute alternative measures for managing storm water in new development such as rain gardens and pervious pavement in lieu of detention ponds.

Karen Handel held her first town hall meeting Wednesday, Aug. 30 over the phone to address issues facing Georgia’s 6th Congressional District. Between 4001,000 people were connected to the call at any given time, according to organizers.

Handel gave an update on her work since being sworn in and answered over 20 screened questions during the hour-long meeting. At least another 20 questions went unanswered due to time constraints, District Director Ashely Jenkins said. Handel will reach out to those individuals and answer their questions over the next few days, she added.

Communication with constituents in general was emphasized multiple times during the call. Handel said that she will be launching several new outreach initiatives, including more telecom and physical town hall meetings. She also envisioned “Coffee with Karen� meetings for weekend availability.

Several of the questions focused on national events. One of the first questions sought her reaction to the rallies at Charlottesville, which took the life of one counter-protestor. “Charlottesville was a terrible, horrible day,� Handel said. “Out of the tragedy and evil of that day came an opportunity for America and Americans to reaffirm that we reject bigotry, racism and antisemitism without equivocation.�

She added that leaders of their KAREN HANDEL communities need to U.S. Representative stand firm against such ideologies and “violence in promoting a point of view.�

When asked about antifa protestors, who resist white supremacist, neo-Nazi and fascist groups, Handel said they are “a hate group just like the Ku Klux

Klan.�

She likewise condemned “rogue cities� who have sanctuary policies for people who are staying in the nation illegally as well as birthright citizenship and amnesty. She added that immigraHANDEL tion in general was a big issue for her and that she wanted to devote more resources for ICE to help get the current situation under control.

Local law enforcement also needs more support, she added. Atlanta especially has a human trafficking problem and police need more resources to help combat it, she said.

Handel emphasized that she wanted to help repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act before it implodes. The current healthcare insurance law is unstable and unaffordable, she said.

Some callers were concerned about how close her race against Jon Ossoff had gotten and wanted to know how she would work to represent all of her constituents, not just those who had supported her during the election.

Handel, who has previously emphasized that she is the first conservative woman representative from Georgia, responded that she doesn’t like labels. “I try to look at people in the district as citizens of the district,� she said. “We need a whole lot less name calling and labeling and a whole lot more problem solving.�

She echoed that message when she said she would not support a government shutdown if there wasn’t enough money to build a border wall with Mexico. It’s not a constructive scenario, Handel said.

Since Handel couldn’t get to every question in one hour, she vowed to answer the remaining questions individually over the next few days.

In short, living with someone soon destroys certain illusions. Not all your jokes are funny. In fact your witticisms and wry comments are simply registered as stupid.

And there is no one quite so perfectly situated to prick the balloons of self-puffery as a spouse. A spouse sees you at your best, your worst and all ports in between. It is a rare person indeed who can maintain one’s public persona once inside the four walls of home. Inevitably one gives in to those human foibles that we are all heir to.

You learn to curb most of them. You don’t kick off your shoes in the living room and leave them there. The laundry basket is there for a purpose. You learn to leave the seat down.

The point is there is one person who has got the goods on you. And that person knows that there is every possibility that all your failures, all your sins of omission and commission, all of your shortcomings could be revealed at the drop of a pin.

And if you can get past that, you have a good chance of having a happy marriage.

My Lady Wife and I have shared more than a few years together now.

We know when to give some space and when to fill a void. We negotiate and bargain over a raft of those small arenas that collectively make up living together. This bargaining is almost always unspoken.

To name it is to create a problem.

But you see a thing left undone, and so you do it.

Again, you see a thing left undone and you do it again. After a certain period of time you realize this is your part of the collective tasks that makes up living together.

It is one of those small negotiations that I could ignore or take on. And if I really think of the negotiations I have lost over the years, I usually think about the perks that make up for them.

There is the self-replenishing sock and underwear drawer in the bedroom.

The patient voice that assures me we are not out of butter and encourages me to search the fridge again but this

It wasn’t always that way. I can remember My Lady Wife early in the marriage would always comment on how “manly” I looked in doing some task. She would comment on she liked how “decisively I drove” or how “graceful I looked” as I flitted around making the bed.

And so it went until one day she could not restrain herself from saying, “You look so masterful taking out the garbage.”

That’s when the light went on. OK, I have a healthy amount of male ego. But NOBODY looks masterful taking out the garbage. And only on the rarest of occasions has my name and the word “graceful” ever appeared in the same sentence (unless accompanied by the words “three-legged billy goat”).

So score one for My Lady Wife. But I have a few tried and true tactics of my own. And no, I won’t give them up now.

Every once in a while she does read one of my columns.

My thoughts turned in this direction because she has been gone almost a week now. She and two friends from the neighborhood went off for a week at the beach. My neighbor Russ agreed to be their driver, host and bartender.

In fact it was Russ’ idea for the trip (there’s a birthday involved). So I have had the week off, as it were.

Needless to say, I am getting weary of bumping into the furniture with no one to provide directions.

So I have spiffed up the place, all spic and also span. I won’t have to say anything. But she will have certainly noticed the housekeeping. Just my way of saying, “I missed you.”

And so it goes, not game perhaps, not set, but certainly a match.

Alpharetta celebrates Northwinds Parkway extension Roadway offers local alternative to Ga. 400 traffic

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – After 10 years in the planning, state and local officials cut the ribbon Aug. 29 on a small roadway they say will have a huge impact for Alpharetta.

The Northwinds Extension, a $6 million project that provides a northsouth connector for local traffic for Haynes Bridge Road to Old Milton Parkway just west of Ga. 400, opened to the cheers of those who shepherded the project through to its end.

Moses Brown, vice chairman of the North Fulton Community Improvement District, which first proposed the project in 2007, said the roadway offers an important alternative to those in the area.

It is another in the string of contributions the CID focuses on, he said, “making impactful connections” that increase mobility for the employees and residents of the area.

Alpharetta City Council members, state officials and representatives from the North Fulton Community Improvement District cut the ribbon to open the final section of Northwinds Parkway Aug. 25.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to open up this road today and get everybody using it,” he said.

The North Fulton CID conceived the project as part of its original master plan, but it only picked up steam in the past couple of years with the addition of Avalon and Gwinnett Technical College on Old Milton Parkway.

The project always made sense, said Kirstin Winzeler, program director for the CID, but it made even more sense when Old Milton Parkway began to develop.

Coupled with the 2012 opening of Westside Parkway just to the west, the new roadway now provides local traffic an alternative to the frenzy of Ga. 400,

Winzeler said.

Before the extension was completed, Northwinds Parkway ran from Haynes Bridge Road north to Kimball Bridge.

The new half-mile extension completes the route to Old Milton Parkway, providing students at Gwinnett Tech an alternative entrance and exit to the south, Winzeler said.

“This was something we told Gwinnett Tech about when they first decided to come to this area,” she said. “It wasn’t a promise, but they were very interested in it.”

The project was a partnership between the CID, the Georgia DOT with the City of Alpharetta. The CID contributed $2 million for design, program

management and right-of-way acquisition. GDOT chipped in a little over $2 million for construction.

Pulte Homes, which has a major townhome development in the area, contributed private funding for the southern section of the extension.

Wenzeler said local drivers will appreciate the new road.

“We’re trying to build out that grid system in North Fulton, so you don’t have to get on Ga. 400 at 5 o’clock to pick up your kids from soccer practice or go to the grocery store,” she said.

“Let 400 be the major thoroughfare for ‘working’ traffic.’ Let these side streets like Westside Parkway, like Northwinds Parkway be for local people.”

Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle said the project is a testament to how local governments can work together with the business community to benefit an entire population. Strong ties like these, he said, make the difference between drawing up concepts and getting the actual work done.

“This partnership, this road is just the fruit of these partnerships to be able to create a better city, a better community with better opportunity, not just for Alpharetta, but so far beyond,” he said.

Cancer survivor raises funds to fight Parkinson’s disease Sarah Steward climbs Mt. Kilimanjaro to promote awareness

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — One local woman has beaten all the odds and is now helping people live their lives to the fullest by raising funds for Parkinson’s disease research.

Alpharetta resident Sarah Steward was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma at a young age.

The childhood cancer forms a tumor that develops in the nervous system and can affect bodily function, such as heart rate, blood pressure and digestion.

At stage four, the tumor spreads to the lymph nodes, bone marrow, bone, liver or other organs.

Steward, however, fully recovered from the cancer and is now paying it forward.

She recently returned from the journey of a lifetime after scaling the

soaring peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Standing at 19,341 feet, it is Africa’s tallest mountain.

The trip, however, wasn’t just for fun or glory. It was part of a fundraising effort by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research.

“To be honest mountaineering isn’t a hobby of mine - I am more interested in yoga, pilates and cycling, but I took on this initiative in honor of my dad who is fighting Parkinson’s disease,” Steward said. “[He’s] suffered from it since I was a child.”

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative neurological disorder that can progress from mild tremors to complete physical incapacitation. Currently, there is no known cure. Doctors can only treat symptoms as the disease progresses.

Steward and her father have not given up, however.

“My dad is the strongest person I know,” she said. “I admire his positive attitude and his zeal for life. He inspired me.”

Steward’s efforts have netted over $12,000, all of which will go directly into research.

Fulton Schools still waiting for more than 1,400 students Actual enrollment falls below projected numbers; increases expected

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Schools across Fulton County are still waiting for a surge in students after Labor Day, with enrollment after the first two weeks coming in at 1,430 students below projected numbers.

Fulton School officials say the numbers tend to rise after the first holiday of the school year when students from other parts of the country accustomed to later start dates come into Fulton Schools.

While this trend is most often seen in South Fulton schools, increased numbers after the first two weeks occurs system-wide.

“Looking at the 10-day report, we are under what we projected but that’s not uncommon,” said Susan Hale, Fulton Schools’ spokesperson. “We traditionally experience a surge in enrollment after Labor Day.” School planners had projected 96,676 students for the 2017-18 school year; the 10-day count came in at 95,246. That total retains Fulton School System as the state’s fourth largest, behind Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb.

The lower student numbers were seen across the system and through all grade levels, including high schools in North Fulton where parents had feared the projections were way too low.

Most area high schools came in below or near projected numbers, which could be an issue if the post-Labor Day surge occurs.

The area’s newest school, FAST Charter School continues to thrive with full enrollment in all grades from kindergarten through 8th, in only its second year.

Hale said the school year began with 100 teacher vacancies across the system, primarily in the hard-to-staff areas of STEM and Special Education. But lower student enrollment may mitigate some of those openings as the system continues to fill vacancies.

“We are still working through the 10-day count to determine where we need to adjust our staffing,” said Hale.

“We will know later how our vacancy counts are affected.”

Our tax base is seriously out of balance and unstable and puts the burden squarely on the residents. The answer is to encourage commercial development on Holcomb Bridge and Highway 9. Our city is losing out to our neighbors because developers view us as unfriendly, and Roswell has very little Class A office space.

If elected, what are some of the first issues or projects that you plan to tackle?

Protections for our Historic District, Smart City Technology to improve traffic and energy consumption, and redevelopment of our tired and under-utilized strip shopping centers.

Lee Jenkins Background: Lee Jenkins is the founder and pastor of Eagles Nest Church in Roswell. He spent one year playing for the New York Giants.

What made you decide to run?

I simply feel called JENKINS to serve the citizens of this great city in a more meaningful way. Alpharetta’s St. James celebrates 150 years United Methodist congregation plans weeklong events

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – For as long as Alpharetta has been a city, the flock associated with St. James United Methodist Church has been spreading the word in the community.

Founded by former slaves in 1867 as the Alpharetta Colored Methodist Church, the congregation is celebrating its 150th anniversary this week with an array of church and community events.

St. James is the largest predominantly African-American church in the area, and its numbers continue to

grow, said Senior Pastor the Rev. Dr. Michael T. McQueen.

The church has undergone numerous iterations over its long history.

Its first location was at 109 Cumming St., but as its membership grew and different divisions within the Methodist Church merged, the local Colored Methodists formed to build a new facility on Kimball Bridge Road in 1968.

That location served the congregation

for close to 40 years until the current church, located on Webb Bridge Road, was constructed.

Today, St. James UMC boasts a membership of close to 3,700, and McQueen said plans are in the works to expand the facility with a new sanctuary.

But numbers alone have not defined the church, McQueen said. The congregation is noted equally for its community involvement and message of inclusion for all races and beliefs.

“We model ourselves after what the kingdom of God looks like,” McQueen said. “I believe heaven will model that same diversity.”

That diversity was on display a year ago when St. James sought to quell tensions after a series of police-involved shootings across the country left the Af-

rican-American community reeling. The church hosted its second Community Reconciliation and Hope Service, drawing a crowd of close to 200 people of all nationalities and walks of life.

The meeting featured dialog between members of the community and local police, corrections and city leaders.

That diversity is on display each November when St. James hosts its annual Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service, inviting people of all faiths to join in worship.

It is on display each January when the sanctuary fills for Martin Luther King Day services, then empties out to march down Academy Street to rally at City Hall.

Reflecting on that ceremony, McQueen said he is pleased with the relationship the church has with the city and its Public Safety Department.

Local groups organize help in wake of Hurricane Harvey devastation

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Local businesses, organizations and residents are gathering items, collecting money or heading down to Houston to help in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Employees at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, whose corporate office is in Houston, are collecting small items including diapers, canned food and toiletries.

Harry Norman Realtors, 1664 Market Place Boulevard, in the Cumming area is working with PALS, a local nonprofit that works with animals and their owners. They’re collecting bottled water and pet food.

Volunteers said they are hoping the

people and animals make it through safely. They said they take particular interest in those with animals who are struggling to keep them while evacuating.

John Adams at Indigo Restaurant, 12635 Crabapple Road Suite 120, in Milton said they are holding a Texasstyle dinner from 5 p.m. to closing on Sept. 13 with all proceeds benefitting the Harvey victims.

“I’m saddened to hear the news,” Adams said. “It breaks my heart to see those people suffering like that. We just wanted to reach out and give them a big heart to go along with the big Lone Star State over there.”

Rep. Collins talks healthcare, Lake Lanier, mental health

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, who represents parts of Forsyth County and Gainesville, stopped by the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce International Engagement breakfast Aug. 30 to talk about local and national issues.

“The international footprint here in Forsyth County is great,” Collins said.

“It shows others they can come in and it’s diverse here. Georgia has a great climate for international business.”

One of the most talked about issues across the nation is healthcare, Collins said.

“My hope is healthcare isn’t dead,” Collins said. “The bottom line is what happened in the Senate a few weeks ago, when it didn’t vote on the last measure to send it to Congress, did not kill the bill. It just killed the process.”

Most people thought the process had to start over, but Collins said it wasn’t moving forward at that point in time.

“It didn’t fix the problem,” Collins said. “I defended it all summer at town halls and was not the most popular person in the room by any count. For people wanting to keep the current system, my question back was always, ‘what do you want to keep in healthcare that’s already there?’”

There are four providers in the state of Georgia currently, but almost 90 percent of the state’s counties are represented by one provider, which often is not accepted by doctors, he said.

“At the end of the day, you don’t have an insurance plan and you’re still having the same problems we’ve

developed over time,” Collins said. “It’s a system that’s going in on itself.”

For the future, Collins said they’re still pushing for a system that will provide relief.

On a more local level, Collins addressed issues with Lake Lanier.

“What matters to me is the northeast Georgia area including Lake Lanier,” Collins said. “We made a commitment to engage the Army Corps of Engineers. Without any public input, they decided they’d ban irrigation. We went to them, confronted them and we won. The [Army Corps] general actually called me saying they were removing it.”

Collins also said he’s heard plenty about the antiquated system the Corps uses for dock permitting. He said some people have been fired because of the procedure.

“I’ve advocated for firings,” he said.

“There needs to be more because it’s ridiculous what’s happening. We’re working with the homeowners and get people calling us all the time. We’re able to get this process going.”

Mental health in the county was another issue brought up. Collins said a piece of legislation has passed on the Criminal Health and Mental Justice Act. “One of the issues is how do you know if you’re coming up on somebody who’s just belligerent toward the police and want to react, or are they dealing with a mental or substance abuse issue?” Collins said. “Our bill gives more money so we can begin the process of letting officials and officers be able to identify that.”

He also said they are working on issues related to jails such as many

“We have to stop treating our jails like mental health facilities,” Collins said. “This has to stop. Because of some of the cutbacks on institutionalization and community based programs, we’ve had to think about how we’re putting folks in jail where they aren’t getting their medication.”

Drug problems are often associated with the inner city, low-income areas or gangs, he said, but in Forsyth County

and surrounding communities, the people who are overdosing break those stereotypes.

“I’ve toured almost every jail in my district,” Collins said. “Most people think of people in jail who did something wrong and that’s true. But when you have 35 to 45 percent of your local prison population with either an addiction or mental health condition, this is a money and moral issue. We’re spending too much money to keep them in jail and a moral issue because these folks need their medicine.”

Beltline creator sets sights on Buford Highway There isn’t much doubt about it, most people will finally agree that there are really great restaurants throughout the Metro Atlanta area.

Growing up in GEOFF SMITH Roswell, it seemed Assurance Financial, that transplanted gsmith@lendtheway.com New Yorker’s loved to complain about the food. The Italian food was boring; there were no good bagels; and forget about finding a good Chinese restaurant. Well nowadays, I don’t hear that kind of talk. Folks are pretty fat and happy in Atlanta.

Chefs have grown more and more creative — creative in a way that draws people consistently into their restaurants. Different parts of the metro area are developing their own styles, too.

Canton Street in Roswell has more great restaurants per square foot than maybe anywhere else in the metro area, all serving out of buildings first built in the late 1800s. Alpharetta’s restaurants are a bit more spread out and refined, but fantastic. Ponce City Market in Atlanta has its food court packed with several unique and great restaurants where most of the seating is stretched along barstools.

Perhaps the most unique area walks a thin line between being considered under the radar here in Atlanta, and well-known among chef circles outside of Atlanta. It is Buford Highway. Written up in Bon Appetit, this 7-mile stretch of road heading north from I-285 was called a “United Nations of restaurants.” In this stretch of road you can get Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Indian, Somali, Mexican, combinations of those, and many other types of food. Some of you might think that you’ve got Vietnam-

ese, Chinese and Mexican restaurants close to your home. But the difference here is that these restaurants cook their food as if they are serving not Americans, but people from their home countries.

It has developed a serious “it” factor. So much so that when Anthony Bourdain, a king of cool, brought his show to Atlanta, he spent a lot of time eating in and complimenting restau-

it a reality. The Beltline has become one of the most successful redevelopment ideas of our time anywhere in the country and has transformed every community it runs through.

He left The Beltline project because he thought they were getting away from his idea to incorporate more affordable, lower-income workforce housing.

According to news accounts, Gravel created a nonprofit called Generator. Its mission is to be an “idea studio…committed to the production of ideas about cities that nobody is asking for.” His first Generator workshop will be a School of Design class at Georgia Tech that will focus on Buford Highway.

According to the article, he finds this area interesting because it deals with a lot of issues prevalent throughout the country. There is a large immigrant population there, and he sees this as a way to create a solution for suburban immigrant populations throughout the country. They are going to look at different transit options and different ways to move people around. His design principals will go much deeper than transit and affordable housing options. He wants to create ways to force people to interact and “love” each other more.

In today’s political climate, you can’t argue with that.

‘Hey! I got a little one!’

So I’m back on the Chattahoochee this week. This time I’m at the Jones Bridge Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, and I’m going after (drum roll, please) STEVE HUDSON the smallest brown Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net trout I can find.

No, not big ones – small ones. The smaller the better.

Why small ones? Because catching tiny baby browns is proof positive that there are wild brown trout in the Hooch!

Actually, that’s not news anymore.

Folks have known for a long time that there’s a self-sustaining population of browns in the miles of river below Buford Dam and Morgan Falls, in what’s known as the “upper tailwater.”

But I’m getting ahead of the story. Let me start at the beginning and with a question.

Have browns always been in the Chattahoochee? No. In fact, that section of river would not support trout at all were it not for the construction of Buford Dam and Lake Lanier in the late 1950s.

Some old-timers I’ve spoken to remember the pre-dam days and talk about fishing there in the 1930s and 40s, when it was a “warm” river, and catching catfish, bream and bass. But they did not catch trout, for the water was much too warm.

The thing that turned it into a trout fishery was Lake Lanier. Water released from Buford Dam comes from the bottom of the lake and is really cold – usually around 50 degrees.

But at first there were no trout there to enjoy it.

Where did the first tailwater trout come from? The story you hear is that by the early 1960s it was dawning on some area fishermen that this reframed river really did have trout potential. Local trout enthusiasts approached the state with the idea of a trout stocking program in the cold water below Buford Dam, but there does not seem to have been much interest.

So they took another approach.

Somewhere in there, 1962 is mentioned fairly often, those determined anglers pooled their money and acquired a load of rainbow trout fingerlings from a hatchery in North Carolina. The trout commandos quickly transported their finned cargo back to Georgia. Then, under cover of darkness, they eased up to the river one night and dumped ‘em into the river about a mile south of Old Jones Bridge.

To make a long story short, the transplanted fish found their new digs to be ideal. They settled right in and started to grow – and a year later that section of river held a sizeable population of 12- to 14-inch fish.

For a while, it’s said, the midnight stockers quietly enjoyed this secret trout fishery, keeping it pretty much to themselves. But eventually, seeing the success, the fisheries folks recognized the river’s potential. A stocking program developed, and as a result browns and rainbows alike were soon being stocked in the tailwater. They’ve been stocking trout in the tailwater since 1962, managing the rainbows (which don’t reproduce effectively in the river) as a put-and-take fishery.

But what about browns? It turns out that brown trout do reproduce naturally in the river, and the result is a self-sustaining brown trout population that thrives there today. Today, no brown trout stocking is done; in fact,

browns have not been stocked between Buford Dam and Roswell Road since 2004. In other words, every brown you catch in the upper tailwater will be a wild, streamborn fish.

I had a chance to fish that water last week with Jeff Wright, manager of Alpharetta Outfitters. Jeff was using big flies (“That’s what the big fish want,” he said) and focusing on places where big ones like to hang out – ledges, deep runs, blowdowns and the like.

How big could a big one be?

Browns of 15 inches or more appear regularly. In fact, the state record brown with a weight of 20 lb. 14 ounces was caught in the tailwater in 2014, and more big ones continue to turn up too. According to Georgia DNR several fish of more than 30 inches in length were caught in the tailwater during 2016.

While Jeff was going for the big guys, I decided to see if I could catch a little one just so I could say from personal experience that baby browns really were there. So I rigged up with a tiny little midge emerger and started fishing the shallow runs.

How’d I do? Well, I caught a bunch of brown trout in the 3- to 5-inch range. Three inches? Who gets excited about a 3-inch fish? I did! For even though I already knew it to be true, that tiny little trout was proof positive that the browns are thriving in the river – proof I could literally hold in the palm of my hand.

If you’re like most WEEKS Americans, you’re personally responsible for approximately 20 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. But you can reduce your shoe size: 1. Be green in your yard. Use a push mower. If you do use a power mower, make sure it is a mulching mower to reduce grass clippings. Compost your food and yard waste.

2. Heat and cool smartly. Clean air filters regularly and tune up your heating and cooling equip-

ment annually.

3. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Recycle your newspapers, beverage containers, paper and other goods. Use products in containers that can be recycled and items that can be repaired or reused. Support recycling markets by buying products made from recycled materials.

4. Replace conventional lightbulbs in your five most frequently used light fixtures with bulbs that have the ENERGY STAR. If every household in the U.S. took this one simple action we would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from nearly 10 million cars.

5. Seal and insulate your home.

Get a home energy audit.

6. Use green power. Green power is generated from renewable energy sources such as wind

and the sun. You can buy green power or you can modify your house to generate your own green power. Install solar panels or research incentives for renewable energy in your state.

7. Use water efficiently. Look for products with EPA’s WaterSense label; these products save water and perform as well or better than their less efficient counterparts. Water your lawn and landscaping only when needed, and do it during the coolest part of the day. Turn the water off while shaving or brushing teeth. Do not use your toilet as a waste basket. Repair all toilet and faucet leaks right away.

Top 10 ROI home updates according to HGTV By: Eve Jones Harry Norman Realtors If you are considering, thinking or even pondering about selling your home, consider these top ten updates that will give you the best return on your investment, according to HGTV. #1 Minor Bath Remodel 102% #2 Landscaping 100% #3 Minor Kitchen Remodel 98% #4 Exterior Improvements 95% #5 Adding Another Bedroom 94% #6 Major Bath Remodel 93% #7 Major Kitchen Remodel 91% #8 Deck/Patio/Porch Addition 83% #9 Basement Finish/Remodel 90% #10 Replacement Windows 89% Real estate agents always say, “kitchen and baths” sell homes, hence the minor bath and kitchen remodels topping out this list.

For a minor bath remodel, we’re talking about maybe a $8K-$10K investment which would include new quartz or granite counters, freshly painted cabinets and walls, tiled shower and tiled floors. Also, a new seamless glass shower surround adds the illusion of more space.

In terms of a minor kitchen remodel, you could spend $15K upgrading the counters to granite or quartz (honed and leathered texture for the granite is a current favorite), plus new midgrade stainless appliances, freshly painted or resurfaced cabinets, subway back splash and lighting.

All of those upgrades would make buyers very, very happy. The landscaping is kind of a no-brainer. It is your investment in the buyers’ first impression of your home. Spend $2-4K updating old foundation plants (and overgrown shrubbery) or fill in missing/died sod.

Adding some seasonal color and fresh mulch is critical to boost the

all-important curb appeal.

Exterior improvements are the obvious fresh paint but repairing any wood rot and using a more current tone on tone color palate is highly recommended, as the stark 1990s white trim dates a home. If you have defective LP siding, replacing it will help ease buyers worries about that looming expense.

Adding square footage, especially a bedroom, is always a good investment and is appreciated by buyers and appraisers. Major kitchen and bathroom remodels are good investments, but more so for a longer-term investment.

If you are going to spend $50-60K on a kitchen or $25K+ on a bathroom update, you may want to take time to enjoy your new space and give the market time to appreciate.

That strategy could earn you a 100% return! Coming in a #8 is a deck/ porch/patio addition at 83%.

I suspect it could be higher down here in the south given our moderate weather.

The costs can range greatly from $12K for a new medium sized deck to $100K for a covered porch with built-in fireplace.

Using high-end materials like Ipe wood/Tigerwood decking or the latest durable composite materials seems to pay off as well.

The #10 spot, according to HGTV, goes to window replacement offering an 89% return. My experience would estimate that number to be a little lower.

I have never seen buyers jump up and down about new windows, but they do have a strong aversion to old single paned windows. So, it’s debatable.

One thing I do know, consulting with an experienced real estate agent well ahead of starting home renovation projects is a good idea and it’s true what they say, “you have to spend money to make money”.

(NAPSI)—Amy is a typical millennial: She’s 23, she graduated from college two years ago, she pays $321 in student loan debt every month and she rents an apartment in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. She’s a sales manager for an international food distribution company and volunteers as an English tutor every week. She loves bike riding, playing her guitar, Saturday brunch and beer tastings.

One thing, however, is not typical about Amy: She bought a house and will move in next month.

Why and how did she do that? Saving money was the biggest reason. “My friend Mike just bought a house and his mortgage is $300 less than his rent!

When I heard that, I was definitely interested. Plus, I need a tax deduction,�

Amy said. She currently pays $1,440 a month in rent.

She already saved enough for a 5 percent down payment. Amy tapped into a financial calculator found at mgic.com/buynow to figure out if she should buy now or wait to save for a bigger down payment. “My dad really wanted me to save enough to put 20 percent down. But I showed him that it could take me eight years to save that much money! In that time, I could build up $63,000 in equity or spend $140,000 in rent payments,� Amy explained.

Surprisingly, student loan debt was actually an advantage. Amy has been conscientiously paying her college loan every month since she graduated in 2015. “My loan officer said that because I have been paying consistently, it worked in my favor and boosted my credit score. She also said that I can obviously stay focused and live within a budget,� Amy noted.

Credit history started when she was 16. Thanks to her mom’s advice, Amy applied for a credit card when she was still in high school, used it and then paid it off every month. Amy’s credit score is now a highly respectable 771.

Private mortgage insurance (PMI) was also her friend. Amy explained, “Okay, one of the reasons my dad wanted me to save for a 20 percent down payment was so I would avoid paying private mortgage insurance.

Maybe I could have put more down but I didn’t want to deplete my savings.

Class 7A Roswell 27, Central Gwinnett 21 (OT) — Roswell must be getting used to overtime. The Hornets have now played three overtime periods in two games this season, but on Friday, they needed just one to improve to 1-1.

The Black Knights led 14-7 at the half, but two unanswered scores from Roswell put the Hornets on top in the fourth.

Central forced overtime with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

Roswell running back Kamonty Jett would seal the win with a rushing touchdown in overtime.

River Ridge 7, Forsyth Central 0 — Forsyth Central fell to 0-2 Friday night,

failing to score for the fifth straight game dating back to last season.

River Ridge’s offense entered the game having averaged 46 points per game over their opening two tilts.

Though the Bulldogs’ defense allowed only a single score, their offense was unable to find the end zone.

Collins Hill 24, Lambert 6 — Collins Hill stymied Lambert’s offense Friday night, holding the Longhorns to two field goals from Bryce Christensen.

Turnovers were also costly. The Eagles forced two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. Lambert’s offense was held to just over 200 total yards, while Collins Hill put together two long drives on their way to a victory in the teams’ third straight meeting.

Local grassroots non-profit is looking for a full time Volunteer and Resource Coordinator to perform essential functions through recruiting, scheduling and interacting with hundreds of dedicated individuals and service groups who share in The Drake House mission. The Drake House is a crisis housing program serving single mothers and their children in the Roswell area. The position also requires the solicitation of necessary program donations, including management of a food pantry, and is responsible for the coordination and monitoring of a volunteer and donor management system as well as planning an annual recognition dinner honoring the volunteers.

A minimum of a college degree is preferred in one of the following fields: Communications, Public Administration, Business, Human Services, Education or some related field. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Salesforce preferred.

Experience with volunteer administration is required. The work schedule could involve evenings and weekends to manage group activities.
