missing jury duty and to avoid going to jail, the citizen must pay up. Often, the fake deputy will insist the citizen pay via a reloadable credit card.

This type of scam is national and dates back to 2005, but the newest trend usually targets married couples.

The perpetrators usually indicate the warrant is for the wife.

Real sheriff’s deputies will not call you on the telephone or shake you down for money.

If you receive one of these phone calls, you are urged to contact local investigators to report it immediately.

They found a plastic bag with crystal meth, two glass meth pipes, five Suboxone pills that were not prescribed to him, seven syringes and one milliliter of Narcan.

Richardson was arrested for possession of meth, possession of a schedule III drug, possession of drug-related objects and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Woman discovers ex-beau in closet, wearing mask JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman came home after midnight Aug. 29 after a shopping trip, only to find her ex-boyfriend run out of her closet while wearing a mask.

The woman had been napping on her bed with her dog, when she heard a strange noise and the dog started barking.

When she looked up, she saw that her closet door was partially open.

As soon as she started to close the door, a man with gloves and a mask on ran out and bolted toward the bedroom door.

Woman reports theft of $3K check from mail JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman reported Aug. 30 that a check she had put in the mail had been deposited to an unknown person.

The woman and her husband had left a $3,000 check in the mail to be delivered.

When they got home and checked the account, however, the saw that the check had been altered to a different payee.

Additionally, another check had been written for $1,000 to the same unknown person.

The husband contacted their account to obtain images of the fraudulent checks.

Treating Keratoconus Part 2 of 2 (cont. from 9/7/17)

Keratoconus is an eye condition in which the normally dome-shaped cornea progressively thins resulting in a cone-like bulging that in turn causes significant visual impairment in some patients. In more severe cases, everyday activities such as driving or reading can be challenging due to poor vision.

Treatment for keratoconus in the early stages includes eyeglasses or soft conPriyal Gadani, O.D. tact lenses to correct mild nearsightedness or astigmatism. As the condition progresses, a patient may require rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses to correct vision more optimally. For advanced cases, treatment options include Intacs® intracorneal rings, corneal crosslinking, and corneal transplants.

Intacs® Corneal Implants are an ophthalmic device made of medical plastic “designed for the reduction or elimination of myopia and astigmatism in patients with keratoconus so that their functional vision may be restored and the need for a corneal transplant procedure can potentially be deferred.” How does it work? The implants are placed in the cornea outside of the patient’s line of sight to flatten the cornea and essentially reduce the cone or bulging that has developed. Intacs® implants are designed to be placed in the periphery of the cornea at two-thirds depth, and are surgically inserted through a small incision in the corneal stroma.

With any type of surgical procedure, patients experience anxiety, but it may be comforting for the patient to know that the Intacs® procedure is less invasive than a corneal transplant and other ocular surgical procedures. Intacs® has a high success rate, and is typically performed in about 15 minutes per eye. At the beginning of the surgical procedure, anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye and the eye is held open using a lid speculum to prevent the patient from blinking during the procedure. A single, small incision is made in the surface of the cornea. To ensure proper placement, a centering guide is placed on the surface of the eye. Inner layers of the cornea are then gently separated in a small circular area to allow for Intacs® placement. The implants are positioned and the opening in the cornea is closed.

Patients return for post-operative visits to monitor the healing process and evaluate the visual improvement. Glasses or contact lenses may still be required after Intacs® to provide good vision, but hopefully the amount of prescription that needs correction will be reduced after a successful procedure. With any surgical procedure comes risks, and some risks involved with Intacs® placement include infection, difficulty with night vision, glare, halos, blurry and/or fluctuating vision.

The Intacs® procedure works on the concept of reshaping the cornea from within utilizing implants that provide support to a weakened cornea. The recovery period is typically short compared to a patient who undergoes corneal transplant, and patients notice vision improvement rather quickly. Patients typically resume normal activity after two to three days after surgery. Intacs® are designed to be left in the eye permanently, and there is no “maintenance” required.

However, they can be removed if needed.

After 2-month wait cities now know what they’re worth

By PAT FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON – Homeowners in North Fulton may see something this fall they haven’t seen in a while – a lower tax bill.

Unless they’ve made major improvements to their property over the past year, residents in Roswell and Alpharetta could at least see the portion of their city and county tax bill drop by a few dollars.

While Fulton County Schools, which accounts for the majority of local property tax bills, has yet to set its tax rate, several other taxing jurisdictions have announced stable or slightly lower tax rates.

Fulton County announced Sept. 6 it is lowering its mill levy by a fraction, and Roswell has already set its tax rate at the same level as last year.

Alpharetta is expected to do the same later this month. Because their fiscal years begin in October, Johns Creek and Milton are finalizing their budgets this month.

The budgeting process for all cities and the school district faced a hurdle this year after Fulton County rescinded 2017 residential property assessments in June and ordered the Assessor’s Office to apply 2016 values.

Generally since assessed values on residential property will remain the same as in 2016 and the overall tax rate may dip, it means homeowners should see a lower taxbill.

In Alpharetta, the budget adopted by the City Council proposes to leave the millage rate at its current 5.750 level through the 2018 fiscal year. The city has maintained that rate since 2009 while increasing its homestead exemption to $40,000, the highest such exemption in Georgia.

Alpharetta’s FY 2018 budget includes several capital and operating initiatives, including: • Funding totaling $35 million for capital investment, including $4.5 million for recurring/pay-as-you-go capital initiatives aimed at maintaining infrastructure.

• Funding expanded Public Safety service levels, including funding for two additional positions and body cameras for police personnel.

• Funding miscellaneous service level improvements in Recreation and Parks.

Despite the countywide freeze on residential property assessments, new construction in Alpharetta pushed its overall tax digest up by about 3 percent.

That has city leaders breathing a bit easier. Earlier this summer when the City Council adopted its $132 million budget for 2018, they were told tax revenues might fall short by as much as $500,000.

This is about the latest the city has ever set its property tax rate.

“We would typically do it as part of our whole budget process in June,” said Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard. “We got on the hook with the whole county tax assessments situation and the county suddenly deciding to go back to the 2016 assessed rates.”

Drinkard said the city has been waiting for the county to officially release the tax digest, which tells just how much commercial and residential property is worth.

“Until they released that official digest, we couldn’t really establish what the millage rate needed to be,” Drinkard said. “New development came in higher than anticipated.”

Alpharetta’s gross property tax digest for 2016 was $5.237 billion. This year, the county raised it to $5.395 billion.

The additional value will add about $873,000.

PUBLIC HEARINGS Alpharetta will hold public hearings on the proposed Fiscal Year 2018 Millage Rate Levy. The meetings will be held on the following dates and times in the Council Chambers at Alpharetta City Hall located at 2 Park Plaza.

• September 18, 2017, 11:30 a.m., • September 18, 2017, 6:30 p.m., • September 25, 2017, 6:30 p.m., That may unfreeze some of the new initiatives the city had set aside because of the budget crunch, Drinkard said.

The council may take a second look at some of those items, such as additional positions in the Fire Marshal’s Office or body cameras for police officers.

The Finance Department is likely to recommend which initiatives can be added when the City Council meets Sept. 18 at the first of three public hearings on adopting the mill levy.

“It’s been one of our more interesting budget years,” Drinkard said. “But because we tend to be conservative in our fiscal forecasting, it was not as challenging as it may have been.”

Cities only get one chance at a first impression An old adage states you only get one chance at a first impression. I fully believe it.

I’ve heard friends and family extoll the virtues of television shows, movies and books with the kind JOE PARKER of fervor usually Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com reserved for winning the lottery. And yet, I have sat down to see what the hype is about, and usually within five minutes I can tell it’s not for me.

Unless you draw me in right away, already have me wondering what’s happening or what will happen next or give me something to think about, I’ve usually made up my mind that I’m not interested. And once I’ve gotten it into my mind that it’s not something I’m going to enjoy, there’s no going back.

The importance of a first impression goes far beyond what we watch on the tube or the pages we flip through before bed. It applies to foods and drink. It applies to restaurants. It applies to people.

And, it applies to places.

I recently returned from my firstever trip above the Mason-Dixon Line when I visited Philadelphia, southern portions of New Jersey and Washington, D.C. And though I didn’t spend too much time in these places, I didn’t need to. They told me everything I needed to know with their first impressions.

Philadelphia stinks.

I don’t mean stinks as in I don’t particularly like it, I mean my nostrils have never experienced such an onslaught of foulness.

The views were enjoyable with an interesting skyline, streets lined with row houses and massive shipyards and industrial complexes that were like nothing I had ever seen. But it was difficult to see these sights when my eyes were shut tight due to the putrid air.

Though New Jersey has a reputation

for being unpleasant to the nostrils, I didn’t experience that and rather liked the wide-open landscape interspersed with built-up areas. However, I don’t remember much more because I suffered many concussions while traversing the roads.

I thought Hardscrabble Road from King Road to Crabapple Road was in need of a good repaving. But Hardscrabble has nothing on south New Jersey roads. I’m guessing by their condition, they were last paved sometime during the William Howard Taft administration.

Finally, we have Washington D.C., our nation’s capital. So what were my first impressions of the district that is a shining symbol of the country and a source of both pride and frustration?

The traffic was horrible. Interspersed with well-to-do areas were sections that were run-down slums.

Even in the midst of a city, trees were everywhere. The locals were generally friendly with an “I’m in a rush” type of way. There was plenty to do, but it took quite a walk to get to everything. The restaurant and bar scene was diverse.

And, to cover large potholes, giant slabs of steel were placed as cover.

I loved it.

And why wouldn’t I? For all the reasons above, D.C. reminded me of Atlanta.

Council looks out for drivers I read “Alpharetta denies Kimball Bridge residential development plan” and I just wanted to say I support the decision made by the council. As a new driver, I appreciate their concern for traffic on that road because I drive there almost every day and we don’t need any more traffic. Also, Councilman Gilvin’s comments are very valid because the site currently generates no traffic at all.

I just wanted to say that it’s very nice to see our local officials looking out for the community.

Fulton Schools prepared to accept hurricane evacuees if needed District accepted nearly 1,500 students in the wake of Katrina

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Hurricane Harvey roared ashore in southeast Texas two weeks ago, leaving a path of damaged and destroyed schools in its wake. While most Texas schools will finally open their doors this week, many others remain shuttered while cleanup and decontamination continue.

But unlike its equally disruptive peer, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, most students impacted by Harvey will likely remain in Texas. State education officials lifted red tape to allow students to easily enroll in other schools, and non -impacted districts stepped in quickly to accept displaced students.

Even so, Fulton School System leaders are prepared to quickly accept any students from Texas, dusting off the plan the system used in the aftermath

She noted those directions include enrolling new students with incomplete paperwork since many homes and schools may not be available to provide typical registration documents.

After Katrina, nearly 1,500 students from New Orleans enrolled in Fulton County schools, with nearly 1,000 of them remaining in the system permanently. The surge in new students strained the district’s budget, although some of the expenses were covered by the federal government as part of the “impact aid” reimbursement approved after Katrina.

Downtown housing development receives approval from planners Project near Manning House calls for 58 detached homes

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A proposed housing project in downtown Alpharetta passed a major hurdle Thursday on its way to a final vote before the City Council later this month.

The Alpharetta Planning Commission gave unanimous approval to Taylor Morrison’s revised plan to construct 58 single-family detached homes near the historic Lewis–Manning House on Cumming Street.

This was the developer’s third trip before the planners dating back to June, each time modifying downward the number of dwellings it seeks to build on the 12-acre site.

It is the last large undeveloped residential tract in the city’s downtown.

Early plans had sought 40 townhomes and 29 single-family detached dwellings

on the property.

Last month, Taylor Morrison had proposed a site plan with 59 singlefamily homes, but the Planning Commission tabled that proposal when the developer submitted last-minute responses to address a host of conditions city planning staff had suggested.

Planning commissioners said they did not want to consider such a complex proposal without ample time to study the developer’s response to staff’s suggested conditions.

This go-around, City Planning Director Kathi Cook told the Planning Commission the latest proposal brought significant changes to the layout, including a setback of some 40 feet off Cumming Street which will serve as a civic space.

She said the density for the new plan places just under four units per acre, well below the allowed density of eight units per acre in the Downtown Overlay Plan.

She said the same condition was mandated for the East of Main development on nearby Academy Street near City Hall.

“We want to make sure the house is restored as quickly as possible,” Cook said. “It’s an entrance to their property, plus it’s so visible on Cumming Street.”

But Dennis Webb, attorney for Taylor Morrison, said the developer is putting the Manning House on the market for office use and has no control of when that sale will take place.

Webb suggested a compromise that would allow 29 homes be built before the historic home is restored.

Webb also noted the latest plan proposes 30 percent of the site be devoted to open space – and this is on a site that requires no open space at all. In addition the plan includes two parks totaling about 6,000 square feet.

“We have made a mountain of changes along the way,” Webb said.

Those changes also include Taylor Morrison pushing back the first home from its proximity to Cumming Street.

The company also increased the distance of the three homes proposed on Manning Drive to 30 feet.

Planning commissioners, however, were unmoved with arguments that compromised on tree save on the interior of the development and on delaying restoration of the Manning House.

Those conditions were maintained as part of the board’s approval.

The Alpharetta City Council will consider the matter for final approval Sept. 25.

Alpharetta opens arms to hurricane’s displaced City, volunteers establish facility to take in visitors

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – While all of Georgia braced for fallout from Hurricane Irma this week, local churches and cities took steps to accommodate those fleeing the storm from the south.

The City of Alpharetta opened its Wills Park Community Center Saturday as a limited service shelter to house evacuees escaping the hurricane.

By Sunday afternoon, the center had received 49 people. That number climbed to 65 by Monday morning when the storm’s outer bands reached North Fulton.

“It’s my understanding we’re the only shelter in Fulton County that has space right now,” said Christine Young, Community Center supervisor.

The center received 21 visitors Saturday night and another 18 mid-after-

noon Sunday. Another 19 came in overnight.

Volunteers spent the weekend setting up floor mats in the gym and tables in adjoining rooms to help provide basic needs for those seeking refuge from the devastation in Florida and southern Georgia.

“Those fleeing from this powerful storm are facing some of the worst moments of their lives,” said Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle. “Many have been forced to begin this exodus with no firm destination or housing confirmed, so it is important that we provide aid and comfort in their time of need.”

The city staffed the center with a police officer, paramedic and emergency medical technician and a facility manager at all times during shelter operations.

Full bathroom and shower facilities were made available.

Young said many volunteers stopped by over the weekend to help arrange the facility for the emergency and employees from the Parks and Recreation Department provided plenty

The City Council’s Post 3, the liaison to Administration and the Finance Department, has six candidates vying for the seat.

The seat was put up for special election during the Aug. 28 council meeting after the previous holder, Donald J. Horton, resigned to pursue his bid for mayor. Post 3 will join Posts 4-6 and the mayor’s seat on the Nov. 7 ballot.

donations came pouring in as early as Sunday and continued through Tuesday. Donors included Alpharetta First Baptist Church, Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, Bagel Boys, Chick-fil-A at Avalon, Zaxby’s on Old Milton Parkway, Publix on Ga. 9 and Crust Pasta & Pizzeria. The center also drew donations from neighboring Roswell businesses, including Trader Joe’s and Sprouts.

“Everyone is really pulling together here,” Young said.

Happy Belly to open brick and mortar store Popular food truck operation to focus on private events

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — When Dawn Hall and her late husband, Terry, first came up with the idea of a health food truck, they always hoped one day to turn it into a fixed store.

Now, that dream is coming true because Happy Belly Kitchen plans to open later this month at Vickery Village, 5863 South Vickery St. The business gained recognition when it opened its food truck, Happy Belly Curbside Kitchen, in April 2012, often venturing to events around Metro Atlanta.

Between the two of them, they have more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

“I feel as though we did it the right way,” Hall said. “When you open a restaurant first, you’re stationary and have to have people come to you. With a food truck, we’ve been mobile and were able to go all over. We’ve been able to reach so many people, develop a good brand and following. Why not do the next step and open up a restaurant?”

The idea for the truck came when the couple grew frustrated trying to find healthy options when going out to eat. At the time, food trucks were not as popular as they are now, so the couple decided to fill the gap they saw.

“I’m our target demographic because I’m a mom in her early 40s,” Hall said. “I care about what I eat and what I feed my children. Clean eating is a lifestyle now that you can’t get anywhere.”

The first year was busy. They had to turn down events because they were fully booked.

But then in August of 2013, Terry was diagnosed with cancer on the day their second child was born.

He fought for six months, but passed away in February of 2014.

Before Terry died, Dawn said he asked her to continue their venture for three more years before throwing in the towel.

Learn something new at Outdoor Skills Day School has started, and the kids are learning all sorts of new things. Math, science, social studies – the list goes on and on.

Whether you are new to the outdoors or are a seasoned wilderness explorer, Outdoor Skills Day will help you discover how much fun outdoor recreation can be.

On that Sunday from noon till 4 p.m., outdoor groups and organizations will gather at the Chattahoochee Nature Center to showcase a variety of exciting outdoor activities. Through conversation, demonstrations and a series of mini clinics, they’ll show you just how much fun experiencing the outdoors can be.

“We want to get people outdoors,” says Tamara Kinmon, Special Events manager for the Chattahoochee Nature Center, adding that the broad lineup of presentations is certain to have something for everyone. She adds, “It’s sure to be a lot of fun!”

Activities in the spotlight at this year’s Outdoor Skills Day include tent camping, canoeing, hiking, geocaching, orienteering, plant identification, wilderness survival and fly fishing, among others — and in each case you’ll have the opportunity to learn about these activities from folks who are knowledgeable and passionate about what they do.

All Outdoor Skills Day activities are included with general admission to the Nature Center.

I’m honored to be a part of this year’s Outdoor Skills Day myself, and I’m looking forward to sharing some of my own favorite outdoor activities with you. Among other things, I’ll be talking about hiking in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

Located right here in our backyard, it offers great hiking for hikers of any skill level.

Risks and limitations of orthodontic treatment

By Dr. Jeffrey Jordan, Jordan Orthodontics Successful orthodontic treatment is a partnership between the orthodontist and the patient. The doctor and staff are dedicated to achieving the best possible result for each patient. As a general rule, informed and cooperative patients can achieve excellent orthodontic results. While recognizing the benefits of a beautiful healthy smile, patients should also know that, as with all healing arts, orthodontic treatment has limitations and potential results.

These are seldom serious enough to indicate that the patient should not have treatment. However, all patients should seriously consider the option of no orthodontic treatment at all by accepting their present oral condition.

Alternatives to orthodontic treatment vary with each individual’s specific problems, and prosthetic solutions or limited orthodontic treatment may be considerations. The patient should discuss alternatives with the orthodontist prior to beginning treatment.

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the dental specialty that includes the diagnosis, prevention, interception and correction of malocclusion, as well as neuromuscular and skeletal abnormalities of the developing or mature orofacial structures. An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed at least two years of

additional graduate training in orthodontics at an accredited program after graduating from dental school.

Orthodontic treatment usually proceeds as planned, and we intend to do everything possible to achieve JORDAN the best results for every patient. The success of treatment depends on the patient’s cooperation in keeping appointments, maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding loose and broken braces, and following the orthodontist’s instructions carefully.

The length of treatment depends on a number of issues, including the severity of the problem, the patient’s growth and the level of patient cooperation. The actual treatment time is usually close to the estimated treatment time, but treatment may be lengthened if, for example, unanticipated growth occurs or no growth occurs. What is Microneedling, and is it right for me?

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta It’s tough not to cringe when you first think about microneedling: the idea of introducing tiny needles into your skin does not sound desirable at first blush. However, microneedling is an established and respected method for improving scars and rejuvenating skin. Treatment is usually easy to tolerate and is one of the few effective methods for treating facial scars, lax skin, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that involves creating controlled micro-injuries to the epidermis and dermis. The needles are usually regularly spaced and mounted on either a roller or on a stamping device that resembles an electronic toothbrush. Microneedling is most often used on the face, neck, chest, and hands or for stretch marks elsewhere on the body. These injuries trigger skin’s repair process and collagen production. By creating superficial injuries on the skin, the skin reacts by speeding up collagen production to repair the skin. Most medical-grade microneedling devices have the ability to change the depth of the needles, thus allowing for customized treatments according to one’s individual needs.

The scientific basis for microneedling is a principle that is quite remarkable. Researchers discovered that large injuries to the skin result in scarring, just as expected. Interestingly, small enough injuries can heal seamlessly, without a scar. But, most surprisingly, very small injuries to skin that already has scars or laxity can gradually replace scars or laxity with normal skin.

A rule of thumb is that no more than 5% of a scar or a zone’s treatment area can be injured with each treatment – otherwise, the injuries will merge and act more like a single large injury than numerous small injuries. Repetitively piercing less than 5% of the skin with spaced tiny injuries once every four to eight weeks gradually replaces a treatment area with more aesthetically and functionally healthy skin.

At their most dramatic, the principles of microinjury are used to treat burn victims and injured military heroes and gradually replace large, contracted and restrictive scars with softer, pliable and more comfortable scars that allowed increasingly free range of motion. This application requires large, expensive lasers and is often performed at a referral hospital. For patients with acne scars or seeking firmer skin, the

same principles apply, but large expensive lasers are rarely necessary. This is microneedling’s niche.

First, a microneedling assessment beings with evaluation of a client’s skin during which patient goals are discussed. If microneedling is chosen, a treatment plan is crafted. The depth of the treatment will vary over different facial structures such as the forehead vs cheeks. Deep, pitted acne scars require a greater treatment depth than skin being treated to achieve a youthful appearance.

Microneedling can be safely performed on all facial structures including around the TAYLOR eyes or lips as long as the practitioner adjusts needle depths ad treatment technique appropriately.

Many patients that look into microneedling are concerned about the possible pain during a session. For the most part, microneedling may be uncomfortable but it should always be tolerable. Patients need not worry: generally a prescription strength topical numbing cream is applied and allowed to sit on the area to be treated for at least 15 minutes. During treatments a patient may feel a light prickly sensation, but it is rare that a patient rates this sensation as “pain.” Furthermore, recovery time for microneedling is usually minimal. Patients may feel a sensation similar to a light sunburn post treatment for 24 hrs.

In general, microneedling is a procedure that needs to be performed multiple times in order to achieve desired results. After treatment, it can take up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen, and the healing process can continue over several months.

Treatments are best repeated 4-8 weeks apart. Deeper scaring will require more procedures than the number required to plump and rejuvenate skin.

As with all procedures, microneedling carries some risks and side-effects, so be sure to discuss these with your board certified dermatologist. Seek out someone qualified and who you trust will guide you to the procedure that is right for you and your goals.

Don’t be embarrassed about Alzheimer’s Alzheimer’s disease can be difficult for children, teens, children even adults to understand. There will be times you grandma doesn’t seem like she used to. Or without warning she may get confused, agitated or even angry to the point of accusing you of stealing.

And it may happen when you are out in public, at church, the grocery store, or at a family gathering. Even though you know Alzheimer’s is the cause, it is common to be embarrassed about it.

While you can’t stop behavior changes due to Alzheimer’s, there are tips to help you better manage the situation.

Think About It from Their Perspective Alzheimer’s progressively destroys brain cells over time, so during the early stages many people living with the disease do recognize something is wrong. They may know they are supposed to recognize you, but they can’t.

Imagine how frustrating and scary that would be.

It is important to put yourself in their shoes and think about how you might react if your world suddenly didn’t make sense or you were in a position where you realized you should know someone – even a close family member – but just couldn’t remember who they were or what they meant to you.

Adjust Social Routines Everyone needs social interaction, even those living with memory loss. But as the disease progresses unfamiliar places and social interactions can become scary and more become difficult to manage.

Consider hosting the monthly family dinner at your house, or the home of a close friend instead of meeting at a new restaurant. Consider a familiar locale for the family vacation and stick to visiting favorite landmarks and attractions.

While each day is different, through many stages of Alzheimer’s it is likely your loved one will feel more comforted and peaceful with the familiar vs. something new that might trigger fear or agitation.

Have A Sense of Humor While Alzheimer’s and dementia are serious, as a family member of friend keeping a sense of humor makes a big difference. Let’s face it, there are times you just have to find humor in the situation. It can lighten the mood not

only for yourself, but also for your family and your loved one suffering from memory loss.

And don’t forget is human nature to pick up on the emotions of others around you and this is no different for those living with memory loss. Getting embarrassed or anxious when grandma says the wrong thing can even make the situation worse as she picks up on

your rising level of anxiety.

Sometimes it is just best to whisper a quiet apology, laugh and move on.

Don’t Argue Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that destroys memory. If someone can’t remember, recalls something differently, or is convinced the neighbor stole their favorite pen, don’t spend time arguing or trying to convince them otherwise. Even if they end up agreeing with you today it is no guarantee they will remember it tomorrow. Instead try reassuring them or even asking questions about the memory they are recalling.

Alpharetta charges back, wins thriller over Centennial Raiders overcome two 17-point deficits in 34-31 victory

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A glance at the box score for Alpharetta and Centennial’s Friday night meeting shows the Raiders led for exactly 0:00. But that was enough to down the Knights in the second straight thrilling game between the two schools.

Alpharetta entered the fourth quarter trailing by 14, but scored 17 unanswered points to open region play with a 34-31 win.

The Raiders’ comeback began with nine minutes remaining when Alpharetta used three pass completions and a pass interference call to move just outside the red zone.

Alpharetta quarterback Matthew Downing found Marcus Hill on thirdand-11 for a 24-yard touchdown to cut the lead to one score.

Centennial burned nearly four minutes off the clock, but its ensuing drive stalled at midfield.

Alpharetta took over on offense with 2:44 remaining and soon faced a fourth-and-2 to keep their hopes for a comeback alive.

Alpharetta had run zone read plays throughout the night, and with the game on the line, it finally opened up for Downing to take the ball.

Downing found a seam around the left tackle and went untouched for 65-yards and a touchdown to tie the game with just over a minute remaining.

“At some point we knew that play would open up for [Downing],” Alpharetta head coach Jacob Nichols said.

Centennial’s offense had moved the

ball effectively throughout the game, but it didn’t have the same success in the fourth. Nichols said once Centennial ran out of plays, his defense hadn’t seen before, the Raider defense stood tall.

Centennial was looking for a rally of their own, suddenly playing in a tied game. But on the third play of the Knights’ drive, quarterback Max Brosmer was intercepted by Alpharetta’s Jaycee Horn at the 35-yard line.

Horn returned his second interception of the game to Centennial’s 14yard line, setting the Raiders up for the comeback win with 34 seconds left.

Two rushes from Kevin Watkins pushed the Raiders to the 4-yard line and Alpharetta called a timeout with three seconds remaining.

Dylan Schorr then continued his perfect streak on field goals this season with a 20-yarder to seal the Raiders 3431 comeback win.

Nichols said his team will need to

stop shooting itself in the foot as his team incurred over 100-yards of penalties and lost two turnovers. But he said it was definitely a positive to see his team find the end zone. Entering Friday’s game, 24 of Alpharetta’s 38 points on the season had come thanks to Schorr’s eight field goals.

The Raiders compiled 396 yards of total offense with Downing throwing for 228 with two touchdowns. Downing also rushed for 72 yards and a score behind the game’s leading rusher, Alpharetta’s Kevin Watkins.

Hooch downs Cambridge in region opener Fourth-quarter drives lift Cougars, 21-13

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Chattahoochee improved to 2-1 overall and opened its Region 7-AAAAAA schedule with a win over Cambridge Friday night. The meeting was the second all-time between the programs.

Last year’s inaugural game between the schools featured tons of offense and 79 total points, far different from Friday night’s defensive struggle.

Neither team accumulated over 275 yards and the point total was less than half of last season’s game with Hooch (2-1, 1-0) earning the 21-13 win.

Though Cambridge’s defense held Hooch to 274 yards, the Cougars’

Hooch Quarterback Jack Corrigan found the end zone twice through the air and Max Webb added a rushing score. Webb led the Cougars in rushing yards with 81, followed by Corrigan’s 65 yards.

Cambridge (0-3, 0-1) was held to 258 total yards of offense and found the end zone just once. Hogan Dykes was 15-32 passing for 179 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Matt McCree rushed for 98 yards.

It took nearly the entire first half before the scoreless stalemate was broken. Chattahoochee struck first with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Jack Corrigan with just 40 seconds remaining in the second quarter to go up 7-0.

Roswell’s long travels end with loss to Colquitt County Hornets shut out for the first time in 19 years in 28-0 loss

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MOULTRIE, Ga. — Surrounding Friday night’s matchup between Roswell and Colquitt County were concerns of whether the game should even be played. With Hurricane Irma rapidly approaching Florida, many parents voiced that the game should be cancelled given traffic and possible gas and resource shortages as the Hornets travelled to South Georgia Friday morning.

In the end, the Hornets made the trip without with no issues, but it was a long night with the team not returning home until after 3 a.m. It was also a long night on the field.

The Hornets (1-2) were held scoreless and fell 28-0 to the Packers (4-0).

It was the first shutout loss for Roswell since 1998 when they fell to North Cobb by the same score.

The Packers rushed for nearly 300 yards, powering them to two touchdowns in each half. Meanwhile, Roswell’s offense struggled to sustain drives and finished the night with

under 200 yards of total offense.

Both teams couldn’t put points on the board early with Roswell forcing two turnovers on downs. Colquitt also missed a field goal.

Roswell was unable to break the stalemate with stalled drives and an interception thrown by quarterback Cordel Littlejohn.

With under four minutes remaining in the half, the Packers used rushes of 44 and 24-yards to strike first.

Colquitt extended its lead to 14-0 with 26 seconds left on a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Roswell continued to be shut down by the Packers sizeable and fast defense in the second half and struggled to move the ball beyond midfield.

Already leading by two scores, the Packers added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter and a 6-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth for added insurance.

The game marked the third straight year the two teams faced off.

Colquitt County ousted Roswell in the Class 6A championship in 2015 before the Hornets dominated at home in last season’s 34-3 win.

Roswell has its final bye this week before closing out non-region play against Archer (3-0) and Milton (2-1).

The Hornets won both games by a combined score of 64-0 last season.

Local elementary student wins Boys 10 World Championship ALHARETTA, Ga. — Crabapple Elementary student Patmon Malcom recently competed at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Pinehurst, N.C., and is now one of the Boys 10 World Champions.

Malcom, still only in fourth grade, shot 13 under par and captured the World Championship title by one stroke.

The event saw 1,500 junior golfers ages 12 and under from around the globe. Players must qualify for the event by winning their local tour event or placing in the top two in a regional golf tournament. Malcom played in the 10-year-old division and competed against 175 of the best 10-year-olds from around the globe.

In the final round he was matched against a competitor from California and one from Minnesota.

Roswell wishes ‘Pug’ happy 90th birthday Mayor emeritus honored for long service to city

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. – Some 200 people came out Sunday, Sept. 2, to wish Roswell Mayor Emeritus W.L. “Pug” Mabry a happy 90th birthday and thank him for 30 tireless years as mayor of this city.

In addition to many family members and guests, Mabry received official congratulations from the city of Roswell (from current Mayor Jere Wood), and letters of praise from Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson and a note of congratulations from President Jimmy Carter.

A vice president for Flagler Construction, Mabry was a builder all of his life. But his most impressive monument has been the city of Roswell itself.

After a two-year stint on the Roswell City Council, Mabry ran for mayor in 1966 and won. Judge Maurice Hilliard recalled that first election: “Pug ran against the [then incumbent] Mayor Charles Abercrombie who was a friend of mine. So I didn’t support Pug. But when his term came up again, I liked what Pug had done.

So I came around to ask him what I could do to help him get re-elected. He recalled I had taken out a full-page ad to support Mayor Abercrombie in the
