Sheriff’s Office warns of jury duty scam ATLANTA — The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new twist on an old telephone scam.

According to the office, residents have been receiving calls from people falsely claiming to be Fulton County Sheriff’s deputies. The fake deputy tells the resident there is a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty and to avoid going to jail, the citizen must pay up. Often, the fake deputy will insist the citizen pay via a reloadable credit card.

Woman discovers ex-beau in closet JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman came home after midnight Aug. 29 after a shopping trip, only to find her ex-boyfriend run out of her closet while wearing a mask.

The woman had been napping on her bed with her dog, when she heard a strange noise and the dog started barking.

When she looked up, she saw that her closet door was partially open.

As soon as she started to close the door, a man with gloves and a mask on ran out and bolted toward the bedroom door.

The woman started to scream, at which point the man turned around and told her to “calm down.” He pulled off the mask, and she recognized him as her ex-boyfriend.

They broke up in June and had not spoken since.

The man said he missed her before the woman chased him out while recording the interaction. She had not given him a key or permission to be in the house.

Cumming man arrested for possession of drugs ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police found a man with methamphetamine and Narcan, a drug used to treat overdoses, when they pulled a man over on a traffic violation.

The officers had been patrolling on Mansell Road at 10 p.m., Sept 4 when they saw a car drive past that their system flagged as having no insurance.

When they pulled over the car, police asked the driver, later identified as 37-year-old Chad Richardson of Cumming, when he had last used meth because of his apperance. He replied two days ago.

They found a plastic bag with crystal meth, two glass meth pipes, five Suboxone pills that were not prescribed to him, seven syringes and one milliliter of Narcan.

Richardson was arrested for possession of meth, possession of a schedule III drug, possession of drug-related objects and operating a vehicle without insurance.

When they got home and checked the account, however, the saw that the check had been altered to a different payee.

Additionally, another check had been written for $1,000 to the same unknown person.

The husband contacted their account to obtain images of the fraudulent checks.

Treating Keratoconus Part 2 of 2 (cont. from 9/7/17)

Keratoconus is an eye condition in which the normally dome-shaped cornea progressively thins resulting in a cone-like bulging that in turn causes significant visual impairment in some patients. In more severe cases, everyday activities such as driving or reading can be challenging due to poor vision.

Treatment for keratoconus in the early stages includes eyeglasses or soft conPriyal Gadani, O.D. tact lenses to correct mild nearsightedness or astigmatism. As the condition progresses, a patient may require rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses to correct vision more optimally. For advanced cases, treatment options include Intacs® intracorneal rings, corneal crosslinking, and corneal transplants.

Intacs® Corneal Implants are an ophthalmic device made of medical plastic “designed for the reduction or elimination of myopia and astigmatism in patients with keratoconus so that their functional vision may be restored and the need for a corneal transplant procedure can potentially be deferred.” How does it work? The implants are placed in the cornea outside of the patient’s line of sight to flatten the cornea and essentially reduce the cone or bulging that has developed. Intacs® implants are designed to be placed in the periphery of the cornea at two-thirds depth, and are surgically inserted through a small incision in the corneal stroma.

With any type of surgical procedure, patients experience anxiety, but it may be comforting for the patient to know that the Intacs® procedure is less invasive than a corneal transplant and other ocular surgical procedures. Intacs® has a high success rate, and is typically performed in about 15 minutes per eye. At the beginning of the surgical procedure, anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye and the eye is held open using a lid speculum to prevent the patient from blinking during the procedure. A single, small incision is made in the surface of the cornea. To ensure proper placement, a centering guide is placed on the surface of the eye. Inner layers of the cornea are then gently separated in a small circular area to allow for Intacs® placement. The implants are positioned and the opening in the cornea is closed.

Patients return for post-operative visits to monitor the healing process and evaluate the visual improvement. Glasses or contact lenses may still be required after Intacs® to provide good vision, but hopefully the amount of prescription that needs correction will be reduced after a successful procedure. With any surgical procedure comes risks, and some risks involved with Intacs® placement include infection, difficulty with night vision, glare, halos, blurry and/or fluctuating vision.

The Intacs® procedure works on the concept of reshaping the cornea from within utilizing implants that provide support to a weakened cornea. The recovery period is typically short compared to a patient who undergoes corneal transplant, and patients notice vision improvement rather quickly. Patients typically resume normal activity after two to three days after surgery. Intacs® are designed to be left in the eye permanently, and there is no “maintenance” required.

However, they can be removed if needed.

City, volunteers establish facility to take in visitors

The City of Alpharetta opened its Wills Park Community Center Saturday as a limited service shelter to house evacuees escaping the hurricane.

By Sunday afternoon, the center had received 49 people. That number climbed to 65 by Monday morning when the storm’s outer bands reached

Fulton Schools prepared to accept hurricane evacuees District accepted nearly 1,500 students in the wake of Katrina

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Hurricane Harvey roared ashore in southeast Texas two weeks ago, leaving a path of damaged and destroyed schools in its wake. While most Texas schools will finally open their doors this week, many others remain shuttered while cleanup and decontamination continue.

But unlike its equally disruptive peer, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, most students impacted by Harvey will likely remain in Texas. State education offi-

cials lifted red tape to allow students to easily enroll in other schools, and non -impacted districts stepped in quickly to accept displaced students.

Even so, Fulton School System leaders are prepared to quickly accept any students from Texas, dusting off the plan the system used in the aftermath of Katrina.

“The Georgia Department of Education has provided guidance to us, which is being passed on to local schools, for how to accept and enroll displaced students from Texas or Louisiana who are moving to Georgia due to Hurricane Harvey,” said Susan Hale, spokesperson for the Fulton School System.

She noted those directions include enrolling new students with incomplete paperwork since many homes and schools may not be available to provide

typical registration documents.

After Katrina, nearly 1,500 students from New Orleans enrolled in Fulton County schools, with nearly 1,000 of them remaining in the system permanently. The surge in new students strained the district’s budget, although some of the expenses were covered by the federal government as part of the “impact aid” reimbursement approved after Katrina.

Hale said the system is also keeping tabs on Hurricane Irma, which could also send new students over the border into Georgia after it passes through the state this week.

“GDOE has not yet sent information about students displaced from Florida,” said Hale. “At present, I don’t have any figures on how many students we may [be enrolling] due to Harvey or Irma.”

Public safety officers should receive fair compensation (This letter was in response to the Sept. 9 article regarding Johns Creek staffing efforts.)

I moved into the Chartwell subdivision in 1998. I know firsthand the quality of our police officers and firefighters.

And it is a sad thing that none of the firefighters live in Johns Creek.

Having participated in both the Johns Creek Citizens Police Academy and the Johns Creek Citizens Fire Academy, I know firsthand what these men and women go through.

What I would like to see is a nominal tax of no more than $100 that is collected each October when the tax bills come due, with those monies to be specifically divided among all the active police officers and firefighters.

I figure this could add at least $8,000 to $10,000 per year to the salary of those brave men and women.

Any monies left over can go to support the police and fire departments with additional resources. And, $100 would most likely not financially impact any household. Yet, this money could help

Cities only get one chance at a first impression An old adage states you only get one chance at a first impression. I fully believe it.

I’ve heard friends and family extoll the virtues of television shows, movies and books with the kind JOE PARKER of fervor usually Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com reserved for winning the lottery. And yet, I have sat down to see what the hype is about, and usually within five minutes I can tell it’s not for me.

Unless you draw me in right away, already have me wondering what’s happening or what will happen next or give me something to think about, I’ve usually made up my mind that I’m not interested. And once I’ve gotten it into my mind that it’s not something I’m going to enjoy, there’s no going back.

The importance of a first impression goes far beyond what we watch on the tube or the pages we flip through before bed. It applies to foods and drink. It ap-

plies to restaurants. It applies to people.

And, it applies to places.

I recently returned from my firstever trip above the Mason-Dixon Line when I visited Philadelphia, southern portions of New Jersey and Washington, D.C. And though I didn’t spend too much time in these places, I didn’t need to. They told me everything I needed to know with their first impressions.

Philadelphia stinks. I don’t mean stinks as in I don’t particularly like it, I mean my nostrils have never experienced such an onslaught of foulness.

The views were enjoyable with an interesting skyline, streets lined with row houses and massive shipyards and industrial complexes that were like nothing I had ever seen. But it was difficult to see these sights when my eyes were shut tight due to the putrid air.

Though New Jersey has a reputation for being unpleasant to the nostrils, I didn’t experience that and rather liked the wide-open landscape interspersed with built-up areas. However, I don’t remember much more because I suffered many concussions while traversing the

I thought Hardscrabble Road from King Road to Crabapple Road was in need of a good repaving. But Hardscrabble has nothing on south New Jersey roads. I’m guessing by their condition, they were last paved sometime during the William Howard Taft administration.

Finally, we have Washington D.C., our nation’s capital. So what were my first impressions of the district that is a shining symbol of the country and a source of both pride and frustration?

The traffic was horrible. Interspersed with well-to-do areas were sections that were run-down slums.

Even in the midst of a city, trees were everywhere. The locals were generally friendly with an “I’m in a rush” type of way. There was plenty to do, but it took quite a walk to get to everything. The restaurant and bar scene was diverse.

And, to cover large potholes, giant slabs of steel were placed as cover.

I loved it. And why wouldn’t I? For all the reasons above, D.C. reminded me of Atlanta.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Student Leadership Johns Creek, a program sponsored by the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce, will conduct a candidate’s debate from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 18 at Chattahoochee High School.

There will be a 30-minute “meet-andgreet” with the debate beginning at 7.

Student Leadership Johns Creek is a competitive program that involves 92 students and encompasses all four high schools in Johns Creek – Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview.

Student Leadership Executive Director Irene Sanders said nine members of the leadership program have been selected to the Georgia Secretary of State

Ambassadors Program.

“It is those nine students who will moderate the debate and tape the proceedings,” Sanders said. “They will create their own questions based on their determination of the issues and manage the event. It will be completely run by the students.”

As state ambassadors, these students work in conjunction with the Secretary of State’s office to facilitate events to educate and encourage residents to become more involved in local politics.

Hosting a candidate debate was a natural fit for the student leaders, Sanders said.

The format will be to place all questions into a container for the moderator to draw randomly, then ask alternating candidates to respond.

Fulton County reduces 2017 millage rate ATLANTA – The Fulton County Board of Commissioners approved a reduction Wednesday, Sept. 6, in the 2017 tax rate on property.

The General Fund millage rate was approved at 10.380, down 0.07 mills from the 2016 millage rate of 10.450.

This marks the third year in a row the General Fund millage rate was reduced. The Bond Fund millage rate will remain unchanged at 0.250.

Fulton Commissioner Bob Ellis said the actions of the past few months have been focused on addressing a problematic 2017 residential property assessment process in a way that was most equitable to homeowners. “However, I want you to know that discussions have been ongoing with state legislators regarding changes that can be made to our property tax system in Fulton County and potentially throughout the state,” Ellis said.

Ellis said he is lobbying for tax code changes in three areas: property tax caps for homeowners, potential ex-

panded exemptions for seniors and general reforms of the property tax assessment process.

A property tax cap means if the assessment rises, it does not automatically result in a similar increase in property taxes.

ELLIS There are many caplike mechanisms used in other states and by some local governments in Georgia that could be employed.

Fulton County taxing authorities – city, school and county government – could and should have the same cap mechanisms in place so that homeowners have a degree of assurance that their tax bills cannot increase over a certain percentage amount, Ellis said.

Johns Creek Chamber welcomes Margolis as chairwoman

At the Aug. 17 luncheon, the chamber welcomed her and thanked outgoing Chairman Dan Callahan, Alcon’s director of facilities operations.

But Johns Creek Chamber CEO John Bemont told Callahan he should not relax too much, the chamber was not ready to quite let go.

As outgoing chairman he will remain part of the leadership team this year assisting Margolis as will Chairman-elect Jim Pope, regional vice president of Renasant Bank.

“The outgoing chairman works with the incoming chair and the chair-elect to give the chamber solid and secure leadership. It makes the transitions smoother and we have the benefit of three chairpersons,” said Bemont.

The two softball teams were evenly matched, but it was the Cannons who fired the most shots (runs) to take home the trophy.

The game was sponsored by the North Metro Miracle League and played at Alpharetta’s North Park, the Gold Rush’s home turf. Nevertheless, the Loose Cannons pounded out the win against the repeat state-champion Gold Rush.

“This was some serious softball,” said North Metro Miracle League Executive Director John McLaughlin. ”We’re bringing back old-school ball today.”

Scores rise locally, statewide on ACT More than half of area students ‘college ready’

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Georgia’s students show steady improvement on the ACT, with increasing scores and participation rates on the 2017 test, along with higher number of students deemed ready to meet the demands of college courses.

The state average on the annual test for college acceptance was 21.4, the second consecutive year of increased scores, and slightly higher than the national average of 21. A perfect score on the ACT is 36.

Locally, students in North Fulton high schools posted among the highest scores in the state, led by Northview High with an average of 27.6. Northview was followed by strong performances from students at Johns Creek (26.6) and Chattahoochee (26.3).

As a system, Fulton County Schools raised its average to 23.8, an increase from 23.2 on the 2016 test, with higher participation rates as well. Known primarily as an SAT-preferred state – the other standard test for college admission – Georgia students are gravitating

Homeowners may see dip in property taxes After 2-month wait cities now know what they’re worth

By PAT FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON – Homeowners in North Fulton may see something this fall they haven’t seen in a while – a lower tax bill.

Unless they’ve made major improvements to their property over the past year, residents in Roswell and Alpharetta could at least see the portion of their city and county tax bill drop by a few dollars.

While Fulton County Schools, which accounts for the majority of local property tax bills, has yet to set its tax rate, several other taxing jurisdictions have

announced stable or slightly lower tax rates.

Fulton County announced Sept. 6 it is lowering its mill levy by a fraction, and Roswell has already set its tax rate at the same level as last year.

Alpharetta is expected to do the same later this month. Because their fiscal years begin in October, Johns Creek and Milton are finalizing their budgets this month.

The budgeting process for all cities and the school district faced a hurdle this year after Fulton County rescinded 2017 residential property assessments in June and ordered the Assessor’s Office to apply 2016 values.

Generally since assessed values on residential property will remain the same as in 2016 and the overall tax rate may dip, it means homeowners should see a lower taxbill.

In Alpharetta, the budget adopted

That has city leaders breathing a bit easier. Earlier this summer when the City Council adopted its $132 million budget for 2018, they were told tax revenues might fall short by as much as $500,000.

This is about the latest the city has ever set its property tax rate.

Happy Belly to open brick and mortar store Popular food truck to focus on private events

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — When Dawn Hall and her late husband, Terry, first came up with the idea of a health food truck, they always hoped one day to turn it into a fixed store.

Now, that dream is coming true because Happy Belly Kitchen plans to open later this month at Vickery Village, 5863 South Vickery St. The business gained recognition when it opened its food truck, Happy Belly Curbside Kitchen, in April 2012, often venturing to events around Metro Atlanta. Between the two of them, they have more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

“I feel as though we did it the right way,” Hall said. “When you open a restaurant first, you’re stationary and have to have people come to you. With a food truck, we’ve been mobile and were able to go all over. We’ve been able to reach so many people, develop a good brand and following. Why not do the next step and open up a restaurant?”

The idea for the truck came when the couple grew frustrated trying to find healthy options when going out to eat.

At the time, food trucks were not as popular as they are now, so the couple decided to fill the gap they saw.

“I’m our target demographic because I’m a mom in her early 40s,” Hall said.

“I care about what I eat and what I feed my children. Clean eating is a lifestyle now that you can’t get anywhere.”

The first year was busy. They had to turn down events because they were

fully booked.

But then in August of 2013, Terry was diagnosed with cancer on the day their second child was born. He fought for six months, but passed away in February of 2014.

Before Terry died, Dawn said he asked her to continue their venture for three more years before throwing in the towel.

And now, three years later, she’s persevering with their dream to open the brick and mortar store.

It will have a farmhouse feel to it, from the decorations and laid back atmosphere, Hall said. She bought board games and a tether ball so families can play with each other rather than be on their electronic devices.

Customers can order the same food from the food truck menu, with more options added, including salads, burgers and Brussels sprouts.

“We have our staple menu with items that are great that we won’t change,” Hall said. “We just hired a chef from Michigan who has a culinary background. She’s young and passionate. I’m excited for her to add some new things.”

Additionally, there will be a graband-go section for families or anyone passing by to come in, choose a food item and take it with them for a quick

snack or meal.

As often as they can, the restaurant will try to source out food from local farms, Hall said.

“It’ll be very laid back and family oriented,” Hall said. “If people only have 10 to 15 minutes to eat, they can do that. But if they want to hang out with us for a while, they can do that, too.”

Once the store opens, the food truck will only do private catering events.

But Hall said she’s happy to be closer to her family in Cumming, and not have to drive around the state as much.

“I’m looking forward to developing relationships with our customers,” Hall said. “We’ve had so much support and I can’t wait to grow it more.”

Learn something new at Outdoor Skills Day School has started, and the kids are learning all sorts of new things. Math, science, social studies – the list goes on and on.

Whether you are new to the outdoors or are a seasoned wilderness explorer, Outdoor Skills Day will help you discover how much fun outdoor recreation can be.

On that Sunday from noon till 4 p.m., outdoor groups and organizations will gather at the Chattahoochee Nature Center to showcase a variety of exciting outdoor activities. Through conversation, demonstrations and a series of mini clinics, they’ll show you just how much fun experiencing the outdoors can be.

“We want to get people outdoors,” says Tamara Kinmon, Special Events manager for the Chattahoochee Nature Center, adding that the broad lineup of presentations is certain to have something for everyone. She adds, “It’s sure to be a lot of fun!”

Activities in the spotlight at this year’s Outdoor Skills Day include tent camping, canoeing, hiking, geocaching, orienteering, plant identification, wilderness survival and fly fishing, among others — and in each case you’ll have the opportunity to learn about these activities from folks who are knowledgeable and passionate about what they do.

All Outdoor Skills Day activities are included with general admission to the Nature Center.

I’m honored to be a part of this year’s Outdoor Skills Day myself, and I’m looking forward to sharing some of my own favorite outdoor activities with you. Among other things, I’ll be talking about hiking in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

It is important to put yourself in their shoes and think about how you might react if your world suddenly didn’t make sense or you were in a position where you realized you should know someone – even a close family member – but just couldn’t remember who they were or what they meant to you.

Adjust Social Routines Everyone needs social interaction, even those living with memory loss. But as the disease progresses unfamiliar places and social interactions can become scary and more become difficult to manage.

Consider hosting the monthly family dinner at your house, or the home of a close friend instead of meeting at a new restaurant. Consider a familiar locale for the family vacation and stick to visiting favorite landmarks and attractions.

Have A Sense of Humor While Alzheimer’s and dementia are serious, as a family member of friend keeping a sense of humor makes a big difference. Let’s face it, there are times you just have to find humor in the situation. It can lighten the mood not only for yourself, but also for your family and your loved one suffering from memory loss.

And don’t forget is human nature to pick up on the emotions of others around you and this is no different for those living with memory loss. Getting embarrassed or anxious when grandma says the wrong thing can even make the situation worse as she picks up on your rising level of anxiety.

Sometimes it is just best to whisper a quiet apology, laugh and move on.

Don’t Argue Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that destroys memory. If someone can’t remember, recalls something differently, or is convinced the neighbor stole their favorite pen, don’t spend time arguing or trying to convince them otherwise.

Even if they end up agreeing with you today it is no guarantee they will remember it tomorrow. Instead try reassuring them or even asking questions about the memory they are recalling.

What is Microneedling, and is it right for me?

Brought to you by: Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta It’s tough not to cringe when you first think about microneedling: the idea of introducing tiny needles into your skin does not sound desirable at first blush. However, microneedling is an established and respected method for improving scars and rejuvenating skin. Treatment is usually easy to tolerate and is one of the few effective methods for treating facial scars, lax skin, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that involves creating controlled micro-injuries to the epidermis and dermis. The needles are usually regularly spaced and mounted on either a roller or on a stamping device that resembles an electronic toothbrush. Microneedling is most often used on the face, neck, chest, and hands or for stretch marks elsewhere on the body. These injuries trigger skin’s repair process and collagen production. By creating superficial injuries on the skin, the skin reacts by speeding up collagen production to repair the skin. Most medical-grade microneedling devices have the ability to change the depth of the needles, thus allowing for customized treatments according to one’s individual needs.

The scientific basis for microneedling is a principle that is quite remarkable. Researchers discovered that large injuries to the skin result in scarring, just as expected. Interestingly, small enough injuries can heal seamlessly, without a scar. But, most surprisingly, very small injuries to skin that already has scars or laxity can gradually replace scars or laxity with normal skin.

A rule of thumb is that no more than 5% of a scar or a zone’s treatment area can be injured with each treatment – otherwise, the injuries will merge and act more like a single large injury than numerous small injuries. Repetitively piercing less than 5% of the skin with spaced tiny injuries once every four to eight weeks gradually replaces a treatment area with more aesthetically and functionally healthy skin.

At their most dramatic, the principles of microinjury are used to treat burn victims and injured military heroes and gradually replace large, contracted and restrictive scars with softer, pliable and more comfortable scars that allowed increasingly free range of motion. This application requires large, expensive lasers and is often performed at a referral hospital. For patients with

acne scars or seeking firmer skin, the same principles apply, but large expensive lasers are rarely necessary.

This is microneedling’s niche.

First, a microneedling assessment beings with evaluation DR. TAYLOR of a client’s skin during which patient goals are discussed. If microneedling is chosen, a treatment plan is crafted. The depth of the treatment will vary over different facial structures such as the forehead vs cheeks. Deep, pitted acne scars require a greater treatment depth than skin being treated to achieve a youthful appearance. Microneedling can be safely performed on all facial structures including around the eyes or lips as long as the practitioner adjusts needle depths ad treatment technique appropriately.

Many patients that look into microneedling are concerned about the possible pain during a session. For the most part, microneedling may be uncomfortable but it should always be tolerable. Patients need not worry: generally a prescription strength topical numbing cream is applied and allowed to sit on the area to be treated for at least 15 minutes. During treatments a patient may feel a light prickly sensation, but it is rare that a patient rates this sensation as “pain.” Furthermore, recovery time for microneedling is usually minimal. Patients may feel a sensation similar to a light sunburn post treatment for 24 hrs.

In general, microneedling is a procedure that needs to be performed multiple times in order to achieve desired results.

After treatment, it can take up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen, and the healing process can continue over several months.

Treatments are best repeated 4-8 weeks apart. Deeper scaring will require more procedures than the number required to plump and rejuvenate skin.

As with all procedures, microneedling carries some risks and side-effects, so be sure to discuss these with your board certified dermatologist. Seek out someone qualified and who you trust will guide you to the procedure that is right for you and your goals.

Hooch downs Cambridge in region opener Fourth-quarter drives lift Cougars, 21-13

Hooch Quarterback Jack Corrigan found the end zone twice through the air and Max Webb added a rushing score. Webb led the Cougars in rushing yards with 81, followed by Corrigan’s 65 yards.

Cambridge (0-3, 0-1) was held to 258 total yards of offense and found the end zone just once. Hogan Dykes was 15-32 passing for 179 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Matt McCree rushed for 98 yards.

It took nearly the entire first half before the scoreless stalemate was broken. Chattahoochee struck first with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Jack Corrigan with just 40 seconds remaining in the second quarter to go up 7-0.

Cambridge found the scoreboard and tied the game late in the third quarter thanks to special teams play.

Last year’s inaugural game between the schools featured tons of offense and 79 total points, far different from Friday night’s defensive struggle.

Neither team accumulated over 275 yards and the point total was less than half of last season’s game with Hooch (2-1, 1-0) earning the 21-13 win.

Though Cambridge’s defense held Hooch to 274 yards, the Cougars’ scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to earn the victory.

The Bears responded two minutes later with a Dykes touchdown pass to Ridge Polk, the duo’s fourth touchdown connection of the season. A missed PAT kept the score at 21-13.

Cambridge had a chance for a potential game-tying drive, but for the second straight week, Hooch used an

interception late in the fourth to seal its win.

T Lee intercepted Dykes with 1:23 remaining and Hooch’s offense ran out the clock.

Hooch’s Brendan Huet and Joseph Sayles each had 10 total tackles, including a tackle-for-loss, for the Cougars.

Through three games, Hooch’s defense has allowed its lowest point total since 2013.

Cambridge fell to 0-3 for the first time in four years with the loss.

Chattahoochee will travel to Atlanta’s Lakewood Stadium this Friday to take on undefeated North Atlanta (3-0, 1-0). The Cougars slipped away with a 21-17 win in the teams’ first-ever meeting last year.

Alpharetta charges back, wins thriller over Centennial Raiders overcome two 17-point deficits in 34-31 victory

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A glance at the box score for Alpharetta and Centennial’s Friday night meeting shows the Raiders led for exactly 0:00. But that was enough to down the Knights in the second straight thrilling game between the two schools.

Alpharetta entered the fourth quarter trailing by 14, but scored 17 unanswered points to open region play with a 34-31 win.

The Raiders’ comeback began with nine minutes remaining when Alpharetta used three pass completions and a pass interference call to move just outside the red zone.

Alpharetta quarterback Matthew Downing found Marcus Hill on thirdand-11 for a 24-yard touchdown to cut the lead to one score.

Centennial burned nearly four minutes off the clock, but its ensuing drive stalled at midfield.

Alpharetta had run zone read plays throughout the night, and with the game on the line, it finally opened up for Downing to take the ball.

Downing found a seam around the left tackle and went untouched for 65-yards and a touchdown to tie the game with just over a minute remaining.

“At some point we knew that play

would open up for [Downing],” Alpharetta head coach Jacob Nichols said.

Centennial’s offense had moved the ball effectively throughout the game, but it didn’t have the same success in the fourth. Nichols said once Centennial ran out of plays, his defense hadn’t seen before, the Raider defense stood tall.

Centennial was looking for a rally of their own, suddenly playing in a tied game. But on the third play of the Knights’ drive, quarterback Max Brosmer was intercepted by Alpharetta’s Jaycee Horn at the 35-yard line.

Horn returned his second interception of the game to Centennial’s 14yard line, setting the Raiders up for the comeback win with 34 seconds left.

Two rushes from Kevin Watkins pushed the Raiders to the 4-yard line and Alpharetta called a timeout with three seconds remaining.

Dylan Schorr then continued his perfect streak on field goals this season with a 20-yarder to seal the Raiders 3431 comeback win.

Nichols said his team will need to stop shooting itself in the foot as his team incurred more than 100 yards of penalties and lost two turnovers. But

he said it was definitely a positive to see his team find the end zone. Entering Friday’s game, 24 of Alpharetta’s 38 points on the season had come thanks to Schorr’s eight field goals.

The Raiders compiled 396 yards of total offense with Downing throwing for 228 with two touchdowns. Downing also rushed for 72 yards and a score behind the game’s leading rusher, Alpharetta’s Kevin Watkins.

Centennial’s offense put up big numbers as well, with quarterback Brosmer going 23-34 for 228 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Emeka Nwanze led the Knights in rushing with 76 yards.

Centennial opened a 10-0 lead after a 29-yard field goal from Nicky Solomon and a Brosmer touchdown pass to Cal Dickie following an Alpharetta fumble.

Watkins cut the Knights’ lead with a 58-yard touchdown rush midway through the first, but Centennial scored two unanswered touchdowns to go up 24-7.

A Downing touchdown pass to Robbie Ruppel and a Schorr field goal put the Knights’ lead at 24-17 at the half.

Brosmer posted Centennial’s final score early in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard touchdown rush.

Johns Creek earns first win of season

Class 6A Johns Creek 21, Pope 13 Johns Creek earned its first win under head coach Matt Helmerich and opened its Region 7-AAAAAA schedule with a comeback win Friday night.

The Gladiators trailed 13-0 in the first quarter but a 50-yard touchdown pass from Zach Gibson to Matt Casey halved the lead early in the second. A 22-yard rushing score from Nate Hope and a made PAT gave Johns Creek the lead late in the third.

Hope added another rushing score with under two minutes remaining in the game, and an interception by Caleb Broyles secured the Gladiators’ win.

Class 7A Colquitt County 28, Roswell 0 Colquitt County improved to 2-1 against Roswell in the teams’ third meeting in three years with a shutout win Friday night in Moultrie. The loss marked the first time Roswell had failed to score since 1998.

Roswell’s offense was held to un-

der 200 yards of total offense by the Packers who opened a 14-0 lead with consecutive touchdowns late in the first half on their way to the 28-0 win.

Meadowcreek 29, Forsyth Central 27 Forsyth Central put points on the board for the first time in six games dating to last season, but their comeback attempt fell short Friday night against Meadowcreek.

The Mustangs scored on their opening offensive play and the Bulldogs had to fight back the remainder of the game.

The Bulldogs came within one score in the fourth quarter, but a Mustang field goal put the game out of reach.

Lambert 28, Cherokee 0 Lambert earned its first win of the season with a shutout over struggling Cherokee Friday night.

Lambert held the Warriors to under 100 yards of total offense, while Lambert quarterback Bobby Gabriel scored two touchdowns, and a blocked punt was returned for a Longhorns’ score.

South Forsyth 30, South Gwinnett 23 South Forsyth used late-game heroics to down South Gwinnett for the second straight year and remain unbeaten

(4-0) on the year.

South Forsyth quarterback Cal Morris scored on a long touchdown rush with under two minutes in the game to break the tie, and the defense held on for the close victory.

Hillgrove 42, West Forsyth 20 West Forsyth couldn’t contain Hillgrove’s talented offense Friday night, with West allowing over 500 yards of total offense. Hillgrove opened a 28-0 lead in the second quarter, which proved enough to power the Hawks to the win. West quarterback Zach Burns compiled over 230 yards with two touchdowns in the loss.

Class 4A Blessed Trinity 28, Creekview 27 Blessed Trinity improved to 3-1 with a comeback win over Class 6A’s Creekview Friday night. BT trailed 27-7 at the half, but the Titans defense would hold the Grizzlies scoreless in the second half. Titans’ quarterback Jake Smith would connect for three touchdown passes, and Steele Chambers added a rushing score for BT in the win.

The Titans are now 4-0 all-time against Creekview.

Class A-Private

Fellowship Christian 24, Our Lady of Mercy 6 Fellowship Christian used 24 first half points to power its way to a 24-6 win Friday night. The Paladins scored all their points in the first half and held OLM to a single score late in the second quarter to improve to 2-1.

Whitefield Academy 40, King’s Ridge 28 King’s Ridge couldn’t contain Whitefield quarterback Luke Persons, who accounted for all of the Wolfpacks’ touchdowns Friday night. The Tigers fell to 0-2 in region play with the loss.

Turnovers were costly in the first half for the Tigers as they trailed 19-0 at the break. Though King’s Ridge managed to cut into that lead, Whitefield scored twice in the fourth to put the game away.

Mount Pisgah 45, Walker 21 Mount Pisgah improved to 2-0 in region play with a lopsided win over Walker Friday night.

The Patriots led 21-7 at the half and cruised to their third straight win over Walker in the past three years.

Ellis called for these changes to be implemented in Fulton County, so state lawmakers will need to introduce legislation in the 2018 session calling for a referendum by the voters of each taxing entity for adoption.

Similar to property tax caps, there has also been a great deal of discussion around potential expanded exemptions for senior citizens in Fulton County who, unlike seniors in many other counties, continue to pay schools taxes, Ellis said.

“Reducing or eliminating the school tax for our seniors would also require state legislation that calls for a referendum by the voters,” Ellis said. “We need to have greater oversight that allows us to hold the Fulton County Board of Assessors more accountable.”

In Fulton, a record-high 44 percent of students taking the 2017 ACT met the College Readiness Benchmarks in all four subject areas. Among the eight North Fulton high schools that number was 56 percent of all test takers.

Local teens host Camp Awesome JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Johns Creek area teens Hunter Rutledge and Garrett McLoughlin held their 10th Camp Awesome this August. This year they dedicated the camp to helping less fortunate children by collecting backpacks and school supplies for Blessings in a Backpack.

They also added a junior counselor program which invited previous campers who have aged out of attending the

camp to come back as counselors.

This summer’s Camp Awesome had more campers than the two have ever had, and in the words of many campers and their parents it was “the best one yet.” The boys, who are now juniors in high school, plan to host at least one more camp next summer, and some of the campers have already asked to take on the role of counselors when the graduate high school.

“Those fleeing from this powerful storm are facing some of the worst moments of their lives,” said Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle. “Many have been forced to begin this exodus with no firm destination or housing confirmed, so it is important that we provide aid and comfort in their time of need.”

The city staffed the center with a police officer, paramedic and emergency medical technician and a facility manager at all times during shelter operations.

Full bathroom and shower facilities were made available.

Young said many volunteers stopped by over the weekend to help arrange the facility for the emergency and employees from the Parks and Recreation Department provided plenty of assistance.

The center also drew donations from neighboring Roswell businesses, including Trader Joe’s and Sprouts.

“Everyone is really pulling together here,” Young said.

That is one reason a group of community members, including Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills, created the inaugural Forsyth County Suicide Summit. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 20 at the Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd.

“We want people to walk away with hope,” Mills said. “It doesn’t have to be about despair. We want to offer more coping skills and be a community about love. We’ve been named the healthiest county the past few years, but wellness goes beyond what you see on the outside.”

The idea came to Mills, who is on the United Way Board of Directors, while attending a meeting and hearing from the nonprofit’s mental health committee.

Mills attended Gwinnett County’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse Summit and toyed with the idea of also combining the two topics.

“It’s disturbing,” Mills said. “It’s across the gamut and not in just one [type of people]. It’s not all attributed to drugs. Earlier this year, there were two high schoolers who didn’t know each other that did it the same day.”

She spoke with family members who were left behind and said they have a lot of stigma associated with them.

“It needs to be a subject that isn’t taboo,” Mills said. “It needs to be talked about, addressed and brought out, just

like addiction. Hopefully if you raise awareness, you can create prevention.

The City of Alpharetta (City) is requesting proposals from highly qualified, experienced, and licensed firms to provide BODY WORN CAMERA SYSTEM FOR PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS. The project includes, but is not limited to, all hardware, software and licenses, data storage – archival and retrieval, installation/ implementation, training, warranty, and support for five (5) years for the Body Worn Cameras, a digital video/evidence management system, and the accessories and ancillary components, such as camera-specific uniform items, Bluetooth triggers, battery packs, vehicle chargers, docking stations, etc. The City is requesting the Offeror to provide a turn-key solution to capture evidence, both audio and video, from the officer’s and from the vehicle point of view.
