Laser Cataract Surgery: Is It All Hype? By Niraj Desai, M.D.
Niraj Desai, M.D.
Laser Cataract, Corneal, Refractive and MIGS Surgeon
Many of you reading this article may not have realized that cataract surgery has evolved rapidly in the past 3-4 years. This pace of change pales in comparison to how the procedure has evolved in the past 50 years. For perspective, the procedure started off around 2000 years ago by an Indian sage named Sushruta. His tools? Early morning rays of sunlight, a long thin needle, ghee (clarified butter) and Sanskrit verses. Fast forward to 2017 and the procedure can be a wonderful mixture of OCT guided real-time imagery, femtosecond laser driven tissue cutting and advanced phacoemulsification with active fluidics.
Is it fancy? Oh yes. Does Milan Eye Center have one? Of course. Is it necessary? Well, no and yes. Though the recent evolution in the cataract surgery space with femtosecond laser is significant, the procedure evolved considerably after the advent of phacoemulsification in the late 1960s by Dr. Charles Kelman. The improvements in phacoemulsification technology since then have been continuous, innovative and powerful. So much so, that outcomes from modern phacoemulsification (this means cataract surgery by hand without laser) are equivalent to femtosecond laser cataract surgery - as has been proven in several studies. Put another way, femtosecond laser cataract surgery is non-superior to manual cataract surgery in many instances - but not all instances. Just as people don’t come in the same color, shape or size, neither do cataracts. We have learnt over time that certain cataract types are not optimal for manual cataract surgery. Cataracts that are very dense, cataracts that are associated with a weakened cornea and cataracts that are unstable are some of the instances where manual cataract surgery is not ideal. This is where laser cataract surgery shines - no pun intended! Femtosecond laser cataract surgery enables the surgeon to break up a rockhard cataract before entering the eye, enables the creation of beautiful and perfect circular openings in unstable and misaligned cataracts and minimizes the creation of by-product energy that can harm surrounding tissue. In short, it is a much needed and precise tool for these complex cases. A secondary function of femtosecond laser is astigmatism correction via astigmatic keratotomies. These are precisely placed incisions in the cornea, the clear, dome shaped tissue covering the eye. The role of laser cataract surgery may evolve still as more advanced intraocular lenses are introduced that require more precise placement. As laser platforms become smaller and more integrated into the operating room workflow, the use may also increase. Milan Eye Center has available an ultra-mobile, precise femtosecond laser (its Swiss!) for use in cataract and LASIK patients. The Ziemer Z8 has been a tremendous tool for our surgeons in tackling the most complex as well as routine cases - all our surgeons have their own philosophy regarding its utility. The role of this technology in your surgical care, therefore, has to be based on a discussion regarding its efficacy and utility for your eye. Though it may be the best thing since hummus, perhaps, manual cataract surgery by your highly trained Milan Eye Center eye surgeon will suffice. At your next cataract evaluation appointment, consider discussing the pros/cons and cost/benefit ratio of this fantastic tool with any of our surgeons at Milan Eye Center.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — After residents expressed dissatisfaction with the potential expansion at Eagle Point Landfill in northwest Forsyth County, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners are looking closer at the issue. At a Sept. 12 meeting, the board discussed conducting an environmental assessment of the landfill, with reference to the proposed expansion and methane facility operated by Clean Eagle RNG, LLC. Going forward, the county will work with Atlantic Coast Consulting to determine rates for a potential environmental engineer to serve as a consultant, and an environmental attorney will be retained. Earlier this year, Clean Eagle requested a rezoning of 10 acres for a proposed recycling plant totaling more than 15,000 square feet and five parking spaces. In a letter to nearby residents, Clean Eagle attorney Christopher Light wrote
the purpose of the recycling facility would be to collect the “existing methane gas emitted from the adjacent landfill and refine it to produce a usable natural gas for consumer use.” County Attorney Ken Jarrard said many of the constituents who live nearby the landfill are concerned about the expansion and recommended an environmental assessment. The expansion of the private landfill is permitted by the state, Jarrard said, not the county, and the state does environmental reviews of these permits. However, he said the public asked specifically for the county to do its own assessment. Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills, whose district the landfill falls within, said she’s heard from the public that they want an unbiased assessment and don’t necessarily trust findings from other sources. Vice President for Environmental/ Geotechnical Services for Atlantic Coast Consulting Chris Klamke has worked with the county for years on a host of environmental issues and spoke to the board on his experience with similar situations. He said they could petition the Environmental Protection Division to do the testing and then send it off to separate labs so it could be as unbiased as pos-

sible, however he hasn’t seen that done in a long time. “An environmental assessment on similar properties in this circumstance is difficult,” Klamke said. “The Environmental Protection Division cites criteria and goes through the permitting process to decide if they can legally issue a permit for the facility.” An independent assessment doesn’t necessarily fit into that process, he said, because it would be difficult to get sampling since it’s not a municipal landfill. “It’s a little unusual in this circumstance,” Klamke said. “It’s not unusual for the public to be concerned about a landfill growing in their area. They want to be educated about how the process works. We see this a lot, but I don’t know if an environmental assessment changes directions of the permit moving forward.” He said from what his company has seen of Eagle Point’s history, they’ve been in compliance with the regulations they have to obey. Whenever they had any issues, they immediately addressed it, Klamke said. He said methane monitoring is required by the landfills, along with emissions monitoring, and that data goes to the state and are available for public review.

Alliance Academy prepares for students Information sessions to be held this fall By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County Schools is continuing its work on the Alliance Academy for Innovation, preparing it for students to attend next fall. The school will be the county’s first college and career development high school and will have five career interest-themed academies, including aerospace and logistics, criminal justice and law, healthcare and first responders, hospitality and design, and mechatronics and energy. Principal Brandi Cannizzaro gave an update Sept. 12 on the school’s progress to the Forsyth County Board of Education. Construction has gone well due to the mild winter this past year, she said. Building is slated to be complete in April 2018, with staff moving into the school the following month. Cannizzaro and staff are currently meeting with businesses, industry leaders and those in higher education to

They are also working on setting up dual enrollment opportunities with Lanier Technical College and the University of North Georgia. This fall, meet and greet sessions will be held, and Cannizzaro will travel to the county’s middle and high schools throughout the semester to talk with parents and students about the new academy. There will also be five informational

nights at each high school through October and November. Every family that has an eighth and ninth grader in the district will receive a postcard inviting them to attend the informational nights. “We want to make sure everyone is well aware of the opportunity to attend Alliance,” Cannizzaro said. “It’s open to all kids currently in eighth and ninth grades.” To learn about the specific events,

Student applications to attend Alliance will open Oct. 2 and will run until Dec. 1. “The deadline is a little earlier than some may have anticipated,” Cannizzaro said. “But we wanted to make sure it lines up with the redistricting because kids will be attending from all five county high schools.” The application is similar to the out-of-district process, she said, with student questions specific to Alliance. “The students will be asked why they want to attend Alliance, what they’re currently involved in, what their plans are after college and what are their passions and interests,” she said. A committee will review their grades, attendance, behavior, and teacher and counselor recommendations. Students will be notified in mid-January 2018, which is good timing she said because high school registration usually happens in February. FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. – Imagine losing control of most of your senses and being unable to pick up items, hear properly or see clearly. That’s what people living with dementia feel like daily and how many participants felt Sept. 14 during the virtual dementia tour presented by Second Wind Dreams at the Hampton Park Library. The virtual dementia tour was developed by Second Wind BEVILLE Dreams founder P.K. Beville, a specialist in geriatrics, using both established and first-hand research. Fifteen years later, nearly three million people have gone through the simulation. The tour gives caregivers an opportunity to walk in someone else’s shoes and to feel what it’s like to lose vision or depth perception, and how those factors combine with diminished motor skills make even simple tasks more complicated. Volunteers and staff led participants through hands-on simulations that use glasses, gloves, headphones and special shoes. The program simulates the loss of vision acuity, color differentiation, depth perception, motor skills and hearing, as well as presenting new aches and pains with an overall sensation of discomfort.
After, participants were able to debrief with a counselor to discuss what they felt and how it relates to their loved ones with dementia. It also helps those giving care to dementia patients a better understanding of what they’re going through. This is crucial, because care givers or loved ones often are unable to fully understand, sometimes causing more problems. Certified Nursing Home Trainer James Fox said he hears people say their eyes were opened after going through the simulator. “I’ve heard it’s life changing,” Fox said. ”I often do it for people in the industry who say they wish they had known sooner. When you’re dealing with family members who may not have treated their loved ones the best because they didn’t understand the disease, it can be emotional.” The program was initially a fundraiser for Second Wind Dream, which provides dream fulfillment for seniors, Fox said. “It was quickly realized the tour had

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s (CRK) mission is to advocate and secure the protection and stewardship of the Chattahoochee River, including its lakes, tributaries and watershed, in order to restore and conserve their ecological health for the people and wildlife that depend on the river system. Established in 1994, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK) is an environmental advocacy organization with more than 7,200 members dedicated solely to protecting and restoring the Chattahoochee River Basin — drinking water source for nearly four million people. CRK was the 11th licensed program in the international Waterkeeper Alliance, now close to 250 organizations strong. From the north Georgia mountains to the Florida border, the Chattahoochee River is impacted by unplanned development, storm runoff and trash from industries, roads, and construction sites, and discharges from sewage treatment plants. Withdrawals from the river by municipalities and industries also affect its health through consumptive loss of water that is not returned to the river, impacting downstream water quality, recreation and ecology. While significant improvements have been made in the river, much remains to be accomplished. CRK actively uses advocacy, education, research, communication, cooperation, monitoring and legal actions to protect and preserve the Chattahoochee and its watershed.

Forsyth County Commissioners proclaim September as Suicide Prevention Month FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — At their meeting Sept. 7, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners proclaimed September as Suicide Prevention Month in Forsyth County. Suicide is the tenth-leading cause of death in the United States and the second-leading cause of death among those of the ages 10 to 34. To prevent this from remaining as a usual cause of death, September as Suicide Prevention Month will address the issue of suicide and make those aware of it as well. In 2017 alone, the Forsyth County coroner has dealt with 22 suicide cases. The Forsyth Conference Center at Lanier Technical College will hold the county’s first suicide prevention event on Sept. 20.

Assistant principal helps students throughout entire educational career By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — At last year’s Lambert High School graduation, Assistant Principal Ashley Johnessee had a special moment. As the school’s graduation coach, she witnessed many of her first set of students she taught in kindergarten receive their diploma. “I saw the kid who came in and couldn’t read, and now I see him graduating with Advanced Placement classes,” Johnessee said. “It’s an awesome gift to get. There is no other place in the world where you make an actual difference with kids just by being a human being with them.” While she enjoyed the touching moment, it’s a long way from where she began her career. After graduating college, she went into marketing and promotion for a few years but was miserable and couldn’t figure out why. Her mother was a high school counselor and told Johnessee she should go into teaching, the opposite of what she told her growing up. But she took her mother’s advice and went back to school to get a certification. Her mother continued to support her and suggested she talk with Ginger Davison, the wife of the Lambert principal. At the time, Gary had just taken a position at Settles Bridge Elementary School, so Ginger suggested Johnessee talk to him. She left with a job offer as a kindergarten paraprofessional. “I wanted to teach fifth grade,” she said. “But he told me, ‘good teachers can teach anything.’ That’s always been

my philosophy. Teachers are amazing and can do it. It’s just a matter of what your comfort level is and where your interests lie.” From there, she taught fifth grade, ninth grade and 10th grade. Since 2011, Johnessee has worked at Lambert, focusing on student support, curriculum and instruction where she helps students get everything together they need to graduate. “We’re all hands on deck,” she said. “Whatever needs to get done, everybody comes together and works on it. It’s a great environment.” She enjoys getting to work with the students, too. “The best part was seeing students last year who didn’t really want to see me because I was coming to say I was worried about them,” she said. “But I just saw a kid recently I worked with for a couple of years. I told them they’re doing well this year, and they thanked me. I said to come by any time and they said they will. It was nice to see

A lot of it is being able to think on your feet and be ready for whatever’s coming.” Forsyth County is a great place for her, she said, because she loves how innovative the district is.
“The vision is student based, and I wanted to be a part of that,” Johnessee said. “That was why I wanted to leave teaching. I still teach, but it’s now with adults and mostly facilitating.” And even years later, she credits the Davisons with much of her success. “I feel very invested in what I do because they’re invested in me,” she said. “I wouldn’t be a teacher without Gary. I never would’ve said yes if I didn’t think what he was saying spoke to my heart. This is a heart business. He’s been a supportive guide post for me.”

Construction closes Sharon Forks Library next month FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Construction is set to begin on the second phase of the expansion and renovation of the Sharon Forks Library and will require closing the branch from Monday, Oct. 2 through Sunday, Oct. 29. The branch will also begin closing an hour early Monday through Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. instead of 8:30 p.m., after Sept. 11 due to construction that will disconnect power to the street lights in the parking lot. The library is working to keep patrons safe in the parking lot, along with balancing the requirements of ongoing construction. “We want to keep the library open and available to patrons as much as we possibly can while construction is in progress, but we need to move everything into the new building while the older section is under renovation,” said Branch Manager Mendy Gunter. Movers will transport furnishings, shelving and computers from the existing building to the new expansion section or to off-site storage. Then library staff will relocate more than 100,000 books and materials and make sure the shelves are properly labeled so patrons can locate items from the catalog. During the closure, patrons will not be able to access any portion of the library grounds, including the book return. The library’s popular holds service will also be suspended at the Sharon Forks branch. Patrons that wish to pick up their holds at a different library branch should call the library at 770-7819840 and speak to a librarian about changing their pick-up location well in advance of the branch closing. Patrons should also check their receipts or their online accounts to confirm the due dates for materials checked out from the Sharon Forks Library. Materials currently checked out may be returned to the library’s branches at Cumming, Hampton Park and Post Road. The library will reopen and resume normal operating hours at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 30. The library will continue to post progress updates on its website and social media accounts, as well as sending alerts to registered patrons via email and text message. Lanier downs Lambert; West Forsyth comes back in win Week 5 (Sept. 15) football recap By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com
Class 7A Milton 28, Etowah 20 — Milton improved to 3-1 under first-year head coach Adam Clack with a close victory over Etowah (3-2) Friday night. Milton used three touchdowns from quarterback Jordan Yates, including a reception for a score, and a strong performance from its defense to notch the win. Etowah drove inside Milton territory in the final minute but came up short on a fourth-and-7 to seal the Milton win. Lanier 15, Lambert 6 — For the fourth-straight year, Lanier got the
better of Lambert in a battle of the Longhorns. Lambert couldn’t find the end zone all night and had to settle for two field goals from Bryce Christensen. Multiple turnovers, including two interceptions, allowed Lanier to hold a 13-6 lead at the half. Neither offense could find the scoreboard in the second half, but an intentional grounding call in the end zone against Lambert in the final two minutes gave Lanier a safety and 15-6 win. Duluth 42, Forsyth Central 41 (OT) — Forsyth Central had its potential first win in nearly a year slip away when a late Duluth touchdown and Bulldogs’ missed PAT in overtime proved the dif-
ference in a thriller. Central trailed 27-21 midway through the third quarter before two rushing touchdowns put the Bulldogs up by 8 points late in the fourth. Duluth responded with a score in the final minute and completed a pass on the 2-point conversion to force overtime. In the overtime period, the Bulldogs scored on a rushing touchdown, but the PAT was blocked. Duluth’s 3-yard rushing score and made PAT secured the win for the Wildcats. North Forsyth 58, Pickens 35 — North Forsyth improved to 3-1 in an offensive shootout against Pickens Friday night with 93 total points scored. North quarterback Ben Bales and running back Bryson Trigg combined for eight total touchdowns in the win. North scored 38 points in the first half and held at least a two-score lead for the remainder of the game to tie the
all-time series between the programs at 4-4. West Forsyth 15, Dacula 9 — After failing to score for the first three quarters, West Forsyth scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth to improve to 3-1 and win a second straight meeting against Dacula. West trailed 9-0 entering the fourth when quarterback Zach Burns connected with Ben Bresnahan for a 23yard touchdown seven seconds into the period. West then used an 11-play drive, capped off by another Burns-to-Bresnahan touchdown pass, to take the

Class 6A Alpharetta 42, Northview 17 — Alpharetta improved to 2-0 in region play thanks to a three-score first quarter that powered them past Northview Friday night. The Raiders scored on four touchdown passes from quarterback Matthew Downing, including two for over 80 yards. The Raiders defense also put points up with two interceptions returned for touchdowns from Jaycee Horn and Dane Motley. The game marked the seventh straight year the meeting of the two programs has been decided by over 17 points. Pope 35, Cambridge 6 — In a battle of two winless teams, Pope used three touchdowns in the first half to power their way to the win column. Cambridge fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAAA games. Quarterback Hogan Dykes connected with Ridge Polk for the Bears’
Chattahoochee 21, North Atlanta 14 — Chattahoochee remained unbeaten (2-0) in region play with another close win Friday night against previously unbeaten North Atlanta. For the third straight game, a late interception sealed the Cougars’ win. The Cougars led 13-0 entering the fourth quarter thanks to a passing and rushing touchdown from quarterback Jack Corrigan, but North Atlanta cut the lead with a touchdown with nine minutes remaining in the game. Hooch responded with a 79-yard touchdown pass from Corrigan and a 2-point conversion, but the Warriors quickly cut the lead to 21-14 with six minutes remaining. With 1:21 left, Hooch forced an interception from Andrew Thomas to seal the win. North Atlanta’s defense had allowed just 14 points in three games this season entering the night. Centennial 21, Johns Creek 17 — After being on the wrong end of a comeback win last week against Alpharetta, Centennial scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to earn its first win of the season. Johns Creek led 17-7 early in the

fourth quarter, but Centennial took a 21-17 lead with a touchdown pass from Max Brosmer to Blane Mason with under four minutes to go. Johns Creek sought a go-ahead score on their ensuing drive and got within striking distance with under a minute to go. Facing a fourth-and-1 with 50 seconds remaining, a shotgun snap sailed over the head of Gladiators’ quarterback Zach Gibson, forcing a turnover on downs and ensuring the Centennial win.
Class 4A Blessed Trinity 31, Hart Co. 7 — Blessed Trinity earned a second straight lopsided win over Hart County Friday night, and it could have been a bigger margin. The Titans had three turnovers inside the red zone, but scored 31 unanswered points after trailing 7-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Class A-Private Fellowship Christian 35, St. Francis 20 — Though St. Francis got off to a hot start, scoring less than two minutes into the game, it would be the Knights’ only lead in their region opener. Fellowship Christian improved to 4-0 all-time against the Knights after
staving off a potential St. Francis comeback. Fellowship led 28-13 at the end of the third quarter, but St. Francis cut the lead to eight points with 11 minutes remaining. Fellowship would respond with a touchdown five minutes later to take the win and improve to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in region play. Mt. Paran 56, King’s Ridge 14 — King’s Ridge stuck with Mount Paran in the early stages of the game, but the Eagles proved too much for the Tigers in the end. The Tigers trailed 14-7 midway through the second quarter, but two quick scores put Mt. Paran up 28-7 at the half. The Eagles continued to run over King’s Ridge in the second half. The meeting marked the fifth straight year Mt. Paran has beaten the Tigers by 35 points or more. Walker 35, Pinecrest Academy 13 — Pinecrest couldn’t contain Walker quarterback Joseph Vose who accounted for over 300 yards and five touchdowns in Walker’s lopsided win Friday night. Walker opened a 35-0 lead before Pinecrest put points up in the fourth quarter. Pinecrest scored twice in the fourth, but it was too late for the Paladins who fell to 0-3 with the loss.

Tropical storm leaves death, damage in its wake Wife of former Cumming official dies in accident
By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The wife of the former Cumming Police Chief was killed Sept. 11 when a tree fell on the car she was a passenger in. Nancy Eason, 67, of Cumming, was in a car parked in the driveway of a home on Shadburn Road in North Forsyth around 5:30 p.m. when the incident happened, according to Public Information Officer Deputy Doug Rainwater. Deputies and firefighters arrived to find a large tree had fallen on the car and trapped the occupants. Eason’s husband, Mike, the driver, was removed from the vehicle and suffered minor injuries. Nancy remained trapped while deputies and firefighters worked to rescue her. “Sadly, the female passenger was fatally injured,” Rainwater said. “Mrs.
Roswell dodges wrath of storm ROSWELL, Ga. - Roswell’s emergency responders were prepped for a busy day when Tropical Storm Irma struck the city, but the damage was minimal. The only major issues police and fire departments reported were some downed trees and powerlines, according to Officer Lisa Holland. There were no deaths or injuries reported. A few trees fell across major roads, completely blocking access, including on South Atlanta Street, Azalea Road and Hembree Road. The city’s Department of Transportation was stationed at various points to clear these trees with chainsaws. The majority of the trees fell because of the oversaturated ground rather than from wind gusts, Holland said. One tree at Mansell Road near Houze Road fell on some powerlines, requiring Georgia Power to have to cut the electricity in that area to clear it. A few powerlines did fall across the city, but nothing major, Holland said. Flood-prone areas, such as Don White Park and Azalea Road, unsurprisingly experienced some flooding, she added.

Nancy Eason, 67, of Cumming, died Sept. 11 after a tree fell on the car she was a passenger in during Tropical Storm Irma. Eason was a well-known and respected resident and was a retired court reporter who worked for both the Forsyth and Cherokee judicial systems for many years. The entire Forsyth County community is mourning the loss of this special lady.” Mike is a retired special agent in charge with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and served as chief of police for the city of Cumming from 2005-09.

During the storm, Roswell’s 911 center used their service Nixle to inform citizens of downed trees and powerlines, road closings and other emergencies. Residents can subscribe to Nixle for free to receive such notifications year round through the city’s website roswellgov.com.
Alpharetta experiences power outages ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Alpharetta officials are still assessing the property damage waged by the storm on Sept. 11. “We had a lot of downed trees, a lot on the roadways,” Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said. There were also reports of power outages throughout the city. Most sections had power restored by Wednesday, and a few areas had to wait until Thursday morning. Drinkard said the only damage to city property was minor damage to a wall near Rest Haven Cemetery on Milton Avenue. As far as private property, he said, the city is just beginning to receive permitting requests for roofs and decks damaged by the storm. The city’s 911 center received doz-
ens of calls reporting downed trees. The city opened a temporary shelter at the Wills Park Community Center Sept. 9, a day before Irma struck south Florida. By the time the remnants of the storm reached north Georgia, the shelter housed 70 people, most of them from Florida. Community Center Supervisor Christine Young said all the visitors had departed for home by early afternoon Sept. 12. During their stay, close to a dozen local churches, businesses and restaurants, including Lowe’s, Dickey’s Barbecue and Nothing Bundt Cakes, stopped by with food and supplies, Young said. The city also staffed the shelter with a police officer, paramedic and emergency medical technician. “We were able to get a trailer from the Red Cross that had cots, blankets and

Before the shelter even opened, the staff received dozens of calls from residents and groups asking how they could help. “We had a lot of community members pour in,” Young said. “We had a list of people who we could call for supplies. We had a couple of people who offered to open up their homes, and we took one of them up on it. We live in a great community.”
Johns Creek largely unscathed JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - Johns Creek did what it always does when faced with dangerous and unpredictable weather. It plays an aggressive proactive defense with police, fire and public works setting up a cooperative command structure. The city set up an emergency operations center at police headquarters, but few serious situations arose despite heavy winds.

Alpharetta gives horses shelter from Irma Equestrian Center provides Floridians relief from storm By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga.- North Fulton opened its arms to people seeking to escape the terrors of Hurricane Irma. Even people’s pets were given shelter in Alpharetta. But where can you go with your horses and the water is rising? In preparation for the storm, the Alpharetta City Council opened up the Alpharetta Equestrian Center to horse owners and their horses. Around 100 equine refugees from Florida and Georgia were given shelter, food, straw and extra carrots. The Equestrian Center also opened its grounds to RVs and campers with free water and power connections. “The City Council stepped in and told us to waive all the fees for horse owners who had been displaced by Irma,” said Equestrian Center Manager Matt Casey. “It didn’t really cost the city a lot of money but it was really appreciated by these people who had been chased out of their state by Irma.” Casey noted the Equestrian Center has a lot of acreage and space. Helping horse owners out when flooding presents a problem is not new to the Equestrian Center, he said. “We serve a large horse community, and with our acreage and it being on high ground, we have always
reached out to help. But we started getting calls since before Labor Day.” At the time of the interview, Casey said he had 81 horses on the property (with 15 more headed his way), one miniature pony and two goats. Five RVs were in the parking lot that belonged to horse owners or just evacuees. But this was not the Equestrian Center’s first rodeo. It has a veterinarian on call and the Georgia Hunter Jumper Association was also kicking in with feed and supplies for the horses. Casey said he really appreciated the Hunter Jumper’s support. “The equestrian community here is quite large and everyone wants to help. When there’s a need, they rise up,” he said. Peter Stenborg from DeLand, Florida, drove up along with his horse, Chick, fleeing the storm. He has a friend who lives in the area and was told about the facility here. “I was going to stay in Perry, but the storm started coming too close. So we headed for Alpharetta,” Stenborg said. “When they told us they would not charge us a cent, that pretty nice.” His son, daughter and their families came as well but rented Airbnb homes because of the children and pets. Stenborg said he rode out the last hurricane, but he listened to the warnings and decided to evacuate. He said he would go back just as soon as the infrastructure – power, water, gasoline and stores – were all back in operation.
1425 Market Blvd., in Roswell that had 60,000 square feet of space and was fully operationa,l including water and electricity. The space was donated by Mimms Enterprises in Atlanta at no cost. Nearly all the animals housed at Fulton County Animal Services were transferred to the temporary shelter because of flooding at that location. LifeLine Animal Project, along with Fulton County, helped care for all the animals. The rescued animals will be in the facility for as long as needed, Humane Society officials said. Many of the out-ofstate rescues were from local shelters to clear space for pets that were lost during the storm so they can be reunited with their families. The community
Damage: Continued from Page 16 “Whenever we have a potentially dangerous weather situation, we go into our preparedness mode,” said Mayor Mike Bodker. “Part of that is to put all of our resources in the same room so there is no communication breakdown. “Thank God it was not as serious as it could have been. I think all of metro Atlanta dodged a bullet.” Johns Creek Communications Director Jeff Breslau said emergency personnel were on call throughout the threat. “We had police and fire on duty and public works on call,” he said. “We had reports of downed trees and traffic signals out. But there were no reported injuries.” In all there were about 40 trees down. Both fire units and police were equipped with chainsaws to quickly clear any fallen trees blocking the right of way. “Some trees did hit homes, but there was no significant damage reported,” Breslau said. The city issued weather updates as they came in as well. Bodker did have a report about former City Councilman Ivan Figueroa who moved to St. Simons Island a few years ago. Despite 100-mile-an-hour winds, his home received only slight damage. A tree limb poked a hole in

Milton suffers minor damage MILTON, GA. - Milton city officials with public works, communications, police and fire were in for a long day that began at 5 a.m., Sept. 11, but the city suffered no major damage during Irma’s path through Georgia. Though the city encountered over 30 incidences of downed trees and power lines, no injuries were reported. Matt Marietta, Milton’s emergency management coordinator, said there were other fallen trees, but those were either on private property on not in the city’s right-of-way. During the storm, the city’s paramedic checkups for those with special medical needs was also conducted. “On the whole, the community was safe and our firefighters, police officers and public works crews worked diligently through the night and the next day to respond to events as they arose, and ensured that citizens were safe and that city services could get to them in the event of an emergency,” Marietta said. —Staff writers Julia Growchowski, Hatcher Hurd, Joe Parker and Pat Fox contributed to this report.

Online auction company makes downsizing easier MaxSold boasts 98% success rate By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com NORTH ATLANTA — One company has been making waves in Metro Atlanta by bringing online convenience to the often stressful process of downsizing. MaxSold, founded 60 years ago and first brought to the Atlanta area in April 2014, offers estate sale auctions online for people who want to downsize, relocate or simply get rid of some clutter. Anything ranging from art, tools, vehicles and modern items can be found on the site. And unlike other online consumer-to-consumer companies, MaxSold curates hyperlocal auctions. This emphasis on locality plays a key role in how the business runs. Items aren’t shipped. Instead, MaxSold helps coordinate a pickup time and date for items by categories, with smaller items being picked up first. MaxSold serves 30 metro areas in North America, including Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Houston and New
Jersey. Atlanta is one of the latest to join the ranks. MaxSold set its sights on North Fulton and the metro Atlanta area because they saw that people were throwing away items they didn’t even know were valuable, according to CEO Sushee Perumal. “Their goods were being cherry picked with the rest going to landfills,” Perumal said. In its three-year Atlanta history, the company has more than doubled its coverage. Its first region sale was in Dunwoody, which saw all but one of its 188 listings sold – a coffee table book. It has since grown to include most of North Atlanta, including the cities of Alpharetta, Cumming, Johns Creek and Roswell. The first Dunwoody auction was no outlier. Perumal said the company consistently holds a 98 percent sellthrough rate. MaxSold will do the majority of the work for customers for a 30 percent or $10 commission, whichever number is greater. The commission covers almost all of the steps, including cataloguing,
BUSINESSBRIEFS Rehab center opens Roswell location ROSWELL, Ga. — Centered Recovery Programs is now open and accepting clients for its outpatient drug and alcohol abuse treatment and education program in North Fulton County. The program brings a non-12 step treatment approach featuring mindfulness-based practices, individual and group therapy and other adjunct treatments. There is a significant need for additional quality treatment programs in the Atlanta area, as Georgia has also experienced record numbers of lives lost to drug overdoses in recent years. The opioid epidemic continues to reach new heights and requires additional treatment options for people struggling with substance abuse. With over 3,000 square feet of space to accommodate people attending either full-time day treatment or intensive outpatient treatment, the facility offers
an environment for clients to feel welcome and thrive.

Teamwork is critical Do your employees work well as a team? As a small business owner, have you created an environment where teamwork is required to be successful? DICK JONES Teamwork is not Founder & President only important for Jones Simply Sales small business success, but in most cases it is a critical success factor in all facets of your business. When you look at all the major functions in a small business, like sales, marketing, operations, finance, and human resources, it typically takes more than one person to complete all the tasks and activities related to their functional area. If more than one person is involved, then teamwork is important. The lack of good teamwork impacts both efficiency and effectiveness.
When there is good teamwork, there is good customer service. When teamwork is done well, invoices and payments to vendors are done on time. When teamwork doesn’t work well, things slip through the cracks. Deadlines are missed, marketing opportunities are lost, and growth potential is impacted. To ensure teamwork works well for you, make sure there are standard operating procedures that employees follow. Measure your employees not only on their individual contributions, but also on how well they work with their fellow employees. In major league sports, you’ll often see that the winning team doesn’t have the best player, but they win because they play so well as a team. The same holds true in small businesses. If you get your employees to work well as a team, it will help you to achieve success in your small business.

Home Helpers of Alpharetta would like to say thank you to everyone who voted for us as the 2017 Best of Senior Home Care in North Atlanta! Five years ago Hilary and Greg Eldridge had a vision of in-home care with a difference. They built their business as a tribute to Hilary’s father, with an unwavering commitment to providing exceptional home care that would enrich the lives of their clients with spirit as well as skill. Hilary’s father was 60 when she was born, and as he aged this loving, feisty man would always say “Don’t be fooled by my aging body, because inside I still feel like I’m 35!” This youthful-spirit perspective inspires us every day to bring a customized level of service that helps us engage our clients and share in the richness of their lives, present and past. “It is an incredible honor to be recognized as the 2017 Best of Senior Home Care in North Atlanta” says Hilary Eldridge. “We are profoundly grateful to our clients, caregivers, supervisory team and referral partners for making this happen. What we love about our business is that we are actually helping people in our community live independently in the comfort and security of their own home. Thank you to all of our partners and families for entrusting us to care for those they care for.” Making the right match of caregiver and client is one of the keys to a great relationship. Our hiring process, screening and training guidelines are
extensive. When you meet our talented caregivers you can see that they bring their hearts to work every day and make a beautiful difference in our clients’ lives. Their positive spirits are a joy to be around and GREG ELDRIDGE work with, and are at the core of what drives Home Helpers as we honor our vision and commitment to provide the best quality of life for our clients and their loved ones. Fry me to the Moon, try us once and you’ll be hooked Fry Me 2 The Moon is a three time award winning, local, and family owned restaurant. They specialize in fried seafood, but they also offer grilled and baked options. Beer and wine have also been recently added to the menu. Michael Miranda opened his restaurant in February of 2014 at 5155 Atlanta Highway inside the Mardi Gras Plaza. This wasn’t the beginning of his culinary career, though. He has been mastering the culinary arts since the age of five. He is originally from Schenectady, New York. He moved to Georgia with his wife, Colleen, and their two kids in 2013. Mike loves the idea of locally owned “mom and pop” restaurants. “Before moving south, I worked alongside my parents at their restaurant, Combo’s
Fish Fry, in Schenectady, New York,” said Mike Miranda. “Combo’s is one of those places where everyone knows each other.” The restaurant has rave reviews and loyal customers. “The food is great!!! Real hand cut French fries and fresh food! The staff makes you feel so welcome and is very helpful. So glad I decided to stop by today. We’ll be back!!!” says one Facebook review. Minimally invasive surgical options in gynecologic medicine The field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim and Dr. Stacey Pereira of Modern Ob/ Gyn, minimally invasive proceDR. J. REYES DR. I. REYES DR. MMBAGA dures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “ There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is DR. KIM DR. PEREIRA also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times.” Modern OB/Gyn Modern OBGYN 10692 Medlock Bridge Rd., Suite 100A, Johns Creek, GA 30097 1800 Northside Forsyth Dr., Suite 360, Cumming, GA 30041 404-446-2496, www.reyesobgyn.com

Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your practice? Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road. And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued. How did you react to the news of winning both these titles? To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm. As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment? After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists. I feel so
fortunate to be able to address both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service. You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – DR. TAYLOR what is it? And what does “MOHS” stand for? Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers. As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor. Is there anything else that you would like to share? I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. They care and it shows! And I am so grateful! So, to our team at Premier Dermatology, thank you for the fantastic job that you do every day! Thank you Dr. Taylor, and Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta.

The Mansions of Alpharetta Bright, fun and fiercely independent, Mansions at Alpharetta resident Katie Croye has always done it her way. Katie began her married life as a dedicated wife and mother and enjoyed raising her children until they entered college. With an empty nest and after the loss of her husband, she decided to “get out into the world again” and began her tenure as a professional, employed with an office supply company in West Virginia. “I got to travel some and as a widow, working gave me something to do,” said Katie. When her job ended and with the encouragement of her children, Katie made the decision to move in with her daughter in North Carolina. “My dear daughter worried herself to death about me, and of course, I worried about living with her!” Not wanting to be a burden, Katie decided to move closer to another daughter in Alpharetta, but not to move into her home. Senior independent living seemed the best alternative for Katie, and thankfully, her search for the perfect community didn’t last long; She became the fifth person to put down a deposit on a new construction apartment home at The Mansions at Alpharetta. Moving to The Mansions was easier than she anticipated. When asked what was the first thing she did when she moved in to her beautiful new home, Katie replied, “I got rid of my car. I love getting in our Mansions bus and going places. No more driving for me!” Katie also stays busy. As a proud member of The Mansions Welcoming Committee she works tirelessly meeting with new residents to make them feel at home. She says it’s a labor of love. “Our committee makes sure our new residents don’t eat alone. We go with them to many of the activities and we intro-

Moving can be scary and the committee does all we can to make them feel comfortable in their new community.” Katie shared, “You know, I just want to have fun and something is always going on here at The Mansions. I play bridge, my meals are served to me -I’m a great cook but I just don’t like to cook anymore. I have many very, very close friends, I have my own schedule and I enjoy every minute of living here at The Mansions.” Close to family, a beautiful apartment, good friends, and lots of fun all top Katie’s list of favorite things about living at The Mansions at Alpharetta. Why don’t you start your list today by dropping by 3700 Brookside Parkway or calling (404) 850-9596 and find out for yourself why The Mansions at Alpharetta was selected as “The Best Senior Living Community in North Atlanta” for 2017!

With three physicians and two physician assistants, Morrow Family Medicine sees patients age 5 and above, with a concentration in chronic disease management, episodic care and preventive medicine. My client-focused approach, personalized service and ability to weave modern elegance into traditional spaces allows for functional daily living for today’s busy families. Kat Nelson Designs has over 11 years of experience as a full service design firm. Based in Atlanta, Georgia our projects exist from West to East coast with many repeat clients. Here’s what some of her customers have said: “Kat has worked with me in two different homes, and I highly recommend
her. She has a gift for creating liveable, cozy, and sophisticated spaces. She has helped to create homes that I am proud and happy to live in daily. I receive compliments frequently about my lighting and design features. Kat gets all the credit! Can’t wait to work on my next project with her.” “What an eye for color!! I met Kat for some “living room drapes”. It snowballed into my whole house. By our first meeting, she had learned my style then presented options that totally fit my vision for my house. She has a knack for mixing patterns, colors and textures that feels layered and collected rather than matchy or trendy. I would highly recommend Kat and her team!” “Katrina worked with us in decorating our newly built house as well as provided great tips in the final design. She was creative and extremely knowledgeable with bringing together our personal style, comfort, and a “wow” factor! We loved what she did and loved working with her personally!”

NORTH ATLANTA’S BIGGEST LOSER Kimberly Flowers, of Duluth, weighed 307 pounds in February of 2016 when she walked into Medical Fitness and Wellness Group of Johns Creek for a weight loss consultation. Kimberly’s primary care physician, Dr. Reshma Shah, of Perimeter North Family Medicine, advised her to start working with a personal trainer and nutritionist or consider Bariatric surgery as a last resort which Kimberly was vehemently opposed to.
Feb 2016 307 lbs.
June 2016 264 lbs.
Jan 2017 207 lbs.
At 50, Kimberly has struggled with weight issues her entire life. She tried several times to lose weight using traditional and non-traditional methods, but found it a struggle to keep sustained weight loss. Five years ago, due to the excessive weight and arthritis, she had both knees surgically repaired with partial knee replacements by Dr. Michael Morris at Resurgens in Lawrenceville. She needed a program that would address her holistically. Not just for weight loss, but a Corrective Exercise Program as well to get her moving properly as she began to lose weight. Kimberly met with Mike Hardy, a Corrective Exercise Specialist, a certified Nutrition Coach, and owner of Medical Fitness and Wellness Group in Johns Creek. Mike and the Medical Fitness team offered her a complete solution. She would address her weight issue through a blood sugar stabilization program by balancing her hormones through food and encouraged behavior changes in diet. She would tackle her dysfunctional gait, and muscle imbalances through a comprehensive Corrective Exercise Program, and, of course, supportive counseling by a certified Nutrition Coach throughout the process. Kimberly continues to live on the nutrition program and is currently 110 pounds down.

Enjoy a truly unique breakfast at The Original Pancake House
Simply the Best
Here at The Original Pancake House Alpharetta we do things differently than other breakfast restaurants. There are a lot of quality features that you can only get at our location in the ever growing breakfast market. For many years full service breakfast restaurants have been under served in the restaurant market arena. That is slowly becoming not the case as many new full service breakfast chains and franchises emerge on the scene. The Original Pancake House is a franchise and one of the oldest. OPH started franchising in 1954. We are unique in that we have not changed a thing since then. The menu and the recipes are the same. The quality and ingredients we use are uncompromised. Just a few examples: We squeeze orange juice every morning. It takes 5 to 8 oranges to make a single glass of juice. We buy all of our eggs from a local egg farmer. He delivers hundreds of dozens of eggs to us several times a week and we hand crack them all.
Other breakfast restaurants buy eggs that are bagged and cracked by a machine in advance. We clarify butter to season all of our pancake griddles and to cook all of the eggs in. Our pancake batter is made from scratch with our own sour starter. The list goes on. We are very proud to be voted The Best of North Atlanta and we want to thank our loyal clientele who obviously appreciates our uncompromising commitment to serving the same menu year after year after year without changing a thing.

At Four Fat Cows it’s all about flavor Brought to you by Four Fat Cows Four Fat Cows is a family owned ice cream shop that has been serving Alpharetta families for three years. Four Fat Cows offers a wide selection of ice cream flavors with exciting seasonal flavors being added throughout the year. The ice cream recipes come from the two founders, Robyn Rowles and her son Brenden Higbee, and are made with high quality, natural ingredients. The ice cream is complimented by; handmade waffle cones, puffle cones, a selection of baked goods and an array of toppings, to enhance the already fantastic ice cream. In addition to their tasty treats, the shop offers books and toys for children as well as fun goodies for adults. Finally, the shop has a lovely patio perfect for warm summer nights, and indoor seating for when it starts to get cold, either way, there is space for families and friends to come together and enjoy a delicious treat at Four Fat Cows.

Jordan Orthodontics thanks you By Dr. Jeff Jordan
Wow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, DR. JORDAN and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years. We also want to thank our patients
for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last four years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 21,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. We can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. No thank you list would be complete without thanking my mom and dad who helped me start my practice. Also, a large shout out to my office manager, Laurie Stinger, who has been on board from day one. Orthodontics is a team effort and at Jordan Orthodontics we have been blessed with great patients and a great team over the years! Thanks again!

Forsyth County Family YMCA hosts annual Donor Day FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Family YMCA recently hosted its annual Donor Day at Eagle Point Summer Day Camp on Lake Lanier. Over 20 board members, donors, volunteers and local community supporters toured the YMCA camp in an effort to connect them to their impact by witnessing their contributions in action. Camp Eagle Point serves over 1,800 kids ages 5-12. With a minimum of 200 children per week, the campers are exposed to archery, fort building, kayaking and more. The program’s new feature, Leader’s In Training Camp, provides 13-15 year olds the opportunity to prepare to be future Eagle Point counselors by having them serve as junior counselors helping to lead activities with the campers. This encourages leadership development skills, philanthropy and community service. With an emphasis on social re-
sponsibility, over 400 children received scholarship assistance to attend Camp Eagle Point this summer and 13 local foster children were provided the same experience for 10 weeks without financial burden. The goal of this service was to provide a steady, consistent environment in lives that are constantly changing. “The Forsyth County Family YMCA takes pride in our ability to provide children in our community the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive at Eagle Point Summer Day Camp,” said Associate Executive Director Kerry Carithers. “We have an advantage to inspire children with our rustic property located on 22 acres in the great outdoors backing up to Lake Lanier. Children are able to unplug from technology and get back to the basics. Our priority is to create opportunities for each child to reach their full potential.” To learn more, visit ymcaatlanta. org.

Protect your retirement income By Christopher D. Burns Edward Jones We’ve enjoyed low inflation for the past several years. Yet over time, even mild inflation can erode your purchasing power. This is of special concern during your retirement years. What can you do to help protect your retirement income from inflation? One step you can take is to include an inflation assumption in your calculations of how much annual income you’ll need. Also, even during your retirement years, you will need to own some investments, such as stocks and stock-based mutual funds, with enough growth potential to help keep you ahead of inflation. Be aware, though, that stocks will fluctuate in value, so you should only own an amount appropriate for your risk tolerance.
And you don’t even have to rely solely on stocks to combat inflation. You could also consider Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS. TIPS are designed so that principal and BURNS interest payments rise and fall with the inflation rate. Work with your financial advisor to help decide what moves are right for you to help protect your retirement income from inflation. It may be a “hidden” threat, but you don’t want to ignore it. The goal of using the system is to maximize safety by providing park staff and volunteers with critical, timely lightning warning information in an easy-to-use format. The system’s sensor continuously monitors the atmosphere’s electrostatic energy as far away as 15 miles and evaluates the potential for lightning within an area approximately two miles in radius. When the system determines a hazardous condition, the siren is activated and a strobe light provides a visual alert for 15

seconds. When the threat of lightning is over, three five-second blasts are emitted by the siren to indicate that the area is safe from lightning threats and the strobe light will turn off. The system will only alert for lightning between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Prior to the recent installations, the system was already in place at Joint Venture Park at Daves Creek, Lanierland Park, Matt Community Park at Settingdown Creek and Sharon Springs Park. Over the last few months, the system was installed at Bennett Park, Central Park, Coal Mountain Park, Fowler Park, Midway Park, Sawnee Mountain Park and Sawnee Mountain Preserve. we open East.” The projected redistricting options lowered the population at West Forsyth from 2,700 students to roughly 2,400 students, or at 115 percent capacity. Lambert will go from more than 3,000 students to 2,600, or 106 percent capacity. South Forsyth will have the deepest reduction in students, from 3,700 to 2,400, or 102 percent capacity. Denmark will come in at roughly 1,700 students when it opens at 68 percent capacity. “All of those schools are overcapacity,” Superintendent Jeff Bearden said. “Denmark is absolutely essential for our school system. We must have it and obviously have to populate the school. This is a tough decision and won’t be popular. It’s critically important our students get the same experience at Denmark.” School board members said they are working as hard as they can to not split high schools, but they have to work with the schools being near each other. Additional redistricting relief will go to Silver City Elementary School, Pirkle said. Students from Chesta-
tee Elementary School and Chattahoochee Elementary School will be redistricted to close gaps and reduce overcrowding. Silver City will be left at 93 percent capacity, Chestatee at 103 percent and Chattahoochee at 100 percent. Board member Darla Light and Chairwoman Kristin Morrissey said they’ve received a lot of feedback regarding those schools’ populations. “We’ve had a lot of concern,” Morrissey said. “There have been a lot of approved zonings that are coming. We’ve heard a lot about that need.” Light said it’s the “right thing to do” because there are schools with open seats to fill. “We hear, ‘our school is over capacity, too. Are you going to look at that?’” Pirkle said. “But the problem is in most of those other situations. They’re not over by the percentage that Silver City is over. We have to look at the projected amount of growth in that area and the elementary schools adjacent don’t have space either.” Two public forums will be held in October. At 6 p.m. on Oct. 23, the elementary school forum will be held at North Forsyth High School. At 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, the high school forum will be held at West Forsyth High School. throughout the school year to learn life skills, such as how to run a business, pay taxes and balance a checkbook. The program has two similar centers in the state, including the Junior Achievement Chick-fil-A Foundation Discovery Center which opened in August 2013 in Atlanta, and the Junior Achievement Discovery Center at Gwinnett which opened in 2015. There
are about 30 different discovery centers across the country, Lowe said. Currently, three storefronts have been claimed including Delta Airlines, Georgia United Credit Union and the City of Cumming. Other storefronts could include colleges, healthcare, entertainment, utilities or transportation. Lowe said the companies will sign on by December to have time to build their fronts.

Continued from Page 4 begin the formal process of redistricting later this year to alleviate overcrowding at Lambert High School, West Forsyth High School and South Forsyth High School. Additionally, it will populate Denmark High School which is set to open in August 2018, according to Deputy Superintendent of Schools Joey Pirkle. Denmark is at 645 Mullinax Road and will be home to 2,500 students at capacity. To fill the school, Pirkle gave a breakdown of the various feeder patterns that could be used and how many students will be moved from other high schools. A new district map that includes Denmark shows it will draw students from West Forsyth High School and South Forsyth High School. Additionally, students from Lambert High School will be redistricted to South Forsyth High School. “The redistricting committee certainly kept in mind future buildings and projects,” Pirkle said. “We looked at when East Forsyth High School will open and what we’ll need to do. We needed to keep West Forsyth High School where it needs to be for when
