Is LASIK Affordable for me? By Samir Vira, M.D.
Individuals with glasses and contact lenses are often steered away from LASIK or refractive surgery due to concern for its high cost. Many think of it as a luxury such as a cruise vacation or an expensive watch. But when you sit down and analyze the actual cost and benefits of LASIK, you may be surprised to find out that it is more affordable than you expected. The goal of LASIK and refractive surgery is to allow you to do your day-to-day activiSamir Vira, M.D. ties independently of the need of glasses or Cataract & Refractive contact lenses. LASIK and PRK (photorefracSurgeon tive keratectomy) are sophisticated outpatient procedures that will reshape the cornea, the clear window of the eye, to correct your prescription. It should give you the freedom to drive, read, and enjoy outdoor activities, such as golf, tennis, and swimming, with clear vision. Patient satisfaction after LASIK ranges from 96-99%, making it one of the most desirable elective procedures in the United States. Undoubtedly, LASIK has well-established and long-lasting benefits to patients. What about the cost of the procedure? The average national cost of LASIK was $2135 per eye in first half of 2017 with a range of $1000 to $4000 per eye. The cost usually includes the initial consultation, the procedure, and post-operative follow-up care. Refractive surgery practices have different pricing structures with some charging a single price that includes the most recent advancements in bladeless customized LASIK and others quoting varying prices, depending on the technology used and the amount of correction needed. While the older technology involves the use of a microkeratome blade to create a flap, the advent of the femtosecond laser allows for “bladeless” LASIK and has made the surgery more precise and safer. So that is a look at the immediate cost of LASIK. What about the long-term costs of NOT doing LASIK? This is something that many patients do NOT look at closely. The average individual spends hundreds of dollars on contact lenses and prescription glasses every year. Furthermore, an annual eye exam is needed and additional eyecare products, such as contact lens solutions, will be purchased. If you are an individual in your 20s to 30s, these costs can add up to over thousands of dollars over the span of years. Consideration should also be given to the costs of contact-lens related problems, such as dry eyes, corneal abrasions, and infections. These problems can become expensive due to additional clinic visits and necessary eye drops for treatment. Lastly, think about how much time you would save without the need for routine or emergency doctor’s appointments and daily contact lens care. Several online calculators from Johnson & Johnson (www. backinfocus.com/lasik-eye-procedure-cost.html) and the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society (www.refractivealliance.com/lasik-affordability-calculator/) have been created to help you determine your lifetime cost for glasses and contact lenses. As an example, an individual in his or her 30s will spend about $18,510 over his or her lifetime for reusable contact lenses. So while you may have thought of LASIK initially as a luxury, you should now think of it more like an investment. It is an investment designed to help you save money and the long-term burdens of contact lenses and prescription glasses. If the one-time cost with LASIK seems daunting, keep in mind that most refractive practices and surgeons provide financing options to break it down into smaller payments over time. Ultimately, LASIK should serve as an investment to provide you with freedom to read or watch TV without wearing glasses and to swim or shower without having to worry about your contact lenses.

City first in Georgia to attain the honor By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com
ROSWELL, Ga. — Fans of Roswell’s parks have another reason to brag. After seven years in the running, Roswell’s Recreation and Parks Department has finally taken home the gold in a national competition, recognizing the city’s park system as one of the top seven in the country. Roswell is the first municipality in Georgia to receive this distinction. “Winning this award is like our city winning the Super Bowl, World Series or an Oscar,” said Jeff Pruitt, interim director for Roswell Recreation and Parks. On Sept. 26, Roswell was awarded the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The honor is distributed yearly by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association. “This award is the result of many years of hard work, exemplified by the significant amount of qualified, dedicated and loyal employees we have had since our conception in 1965,” Pruitt said. “This is more than just an award — it is a belief in ourselves to provide quality recreational opportunities and parks for our community, which has transcended over several decades.” Founded in 1965, the awards program recognizes excellence in longrange planning, resource management and program development. Volunteerism, environmental stewardship and professional development are also considered. Gold Medal Awards are given to
CITY OF ROSWELL/SPECIAL
The Roswell Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department wins the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. seven different classes — one for armed forces recreation, one for state park systems and five based on population size. Roswell was one of four cities in the Class III section for a population size between 75,001-150,000. They faced off and won against departments in Arlington Heights, Ill.; Evanston, Ill., and Mountain View, Calif. Only one other agency in Georgia, Gwinnett County, has earned this award, but Roswell is the only state municipality to gain this distinction. Roswell’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department currently boasts more than 965 acres of parkland and 22 parks with 31 miles of bike and pedestrian trails. The park system offers hundreds of classes, programs and camps annually for residents and non-residents. The Southern Trilogy Historic House Museums – Barrington Hall, Bulloch Hall and Smith Plantation – are all included in the department. Over the past year, Roswell’s Recreation and Parks Department has implemented numerous new programs and additions to their system. This summer, it introduced an initiative to emphasize health and fitness with free fitness in
the parks programs, festivals, contests and concerts. Since December 2016, the department has completed Phase 4 of Riverwalk, adding close to a mile of boardwalk trails along the Chattahoochee River marshlands. Riverwalk is one of the first to be designated as a National Water Trail by the National Parks Service. Over the past year, Roswell has also installed Geographic Information System Mapping to increase participation and maintenance in parks. The program identifies underserviced communities in the area and helps generate potential ideas for future programming and outreach. Neighboring city Alpharetta was also named as a gold award finalist earlier this summer for a different class section, but ultimately lost to Bismark, N.D. This was Alpharetta’s first year competing. The 2017 Gold Medal Grand Plaque recipients were announced live Sept. 26 in New Orleans at the National Recreation and Park Association annual conference. Other award recipients this year included departments in Kansas, Texas, Illinois, North Carolina and Arizona.

What spurred you to run for Alpharetta City Council? I decided to run BURNETT because I feel our city is at a critical juncture. We need a voice for homeowners on City Council. We’ve seen tremendous growth and change. The continued pace is putting Alpharetta in a position to become the next victim of overdevelopment and sprawl. Some recent developments have gone against our residents’ wishes and our citizen-created land use plan in 2010. I’m running to give our residents a voice when it comes to major development decisions. Please state some of your qualifications and how they might help you serve. I’m the only candidate in the race that has a skill set to understand quality-of-life issues and city planning. I originally served on our city’s Recreation Commission. I worked with a great team of residents and the AYSA to install shade structures at North Park. On the Planning Commission, I was able to review and vote on important rezoning cases, working with residents, developers and our city staff to find common ground. My voting record on the Planning Commission has always been putting our residents first, which is what I’ll do if elected. Name two or three issues you believe are most pressing and how you would address them. • Development and Planning. The most important issue to the residents I’ve met with is future growth and development. Our citizen-drafted land use plan was a guiding document to be followed for future development. Since its approval in 2011, we have seen it arbitrarily changed in favor of
Candidate forum
The Alpharetta Business Association is presenting a Post 2 City Council candidate forum from 7-8:15 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the City Hall Council Chambers. Candidates Ben Burnett and Ben Easterling will participate in the forum that will feature opening statements and a question-andanswer session. The event is free and, aside from the use of the facilities, has no official city affiliation. apartments, high-density projects and a downtown that looks less and less like a village. While we can’t change the past, we can make the right decisions going forward. If elected, I’ll keep our original commitments to the residents and make sure they have a voice in our city’s future. • Taxes Alpharetta’s tax revenues have increased significantly in the past several years. It’s been almost eight years since our citizens received a tax break. We can easily afford a tax cut for homeowners and maintain a responsible budget that maintains our AAA bond rating intact. We must give homeowners the next tax break. • Traffic As a professional in the technology industry, I know we can apply innovate solutions to help mitigation of congestion. But, in the end, it’s a capacity issue. With recently approved developments and new re-zonings on the horizon, over 100,000 cars will be added to our road system. We have over $80 million in infrastructure projects scheduled for the next five years. With the continuation of large-scale rezonings, it is likely by the time these projects are completed our residents will have received no benefit from their tax dollars. That’s why balancing growth is my main priority. Ben H Easterling Age: 58 Occupation: Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Cities, AT&T What spurred you to run for Alpharetta City Council? It’s simple, I love EASTERLING Alpharetta. Alpharetta has been home for over 20 years. My

through implementing information and communication technology, such as: • Incorporating public safety technology such as; body cameras to protect our first responders. • Exploring the use of autonomous vehicles as shuttle services. • Replacing outdoor street lights with LED smart lighting. 3. Traffic: I will address our traffic challenges via implementation of innovative solutions to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow, such as: • Collaborating with neighboring municipalities, exploring how to minimize commuter traffic and determine regional transportation needs. • Installing smart parking applications, minimizing parking-related traffic bottlenecks. • Incorporating “smart city” technology to optimize our traffic light synchronization.

Georgia submits new education plan to feds
Revised proposals put Deal, Woods at odds over testing By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Flexibility in student testing and the impact of scores continues to be a thorn in the side of state and local educators who have spent years finding the right balance for students. Georgia recently submitted its plan on how to implement new federal education rules, but disagreement over the plan’s testing and accountability measures divides the Georgia Department of Education and the Governor’s Office. In 2015, federal education officials put the last nail in the No Child Left Behind coffin, passing the Every Student Succeeds Act in its place. States had the past year to submit plans on how it would achieve the goals set by ESSA, which significantly reduces mandated testing and the perceived overreach of the federal government. The law mandates state governors be given 30 days to review the plan, but it does not require the governor’s approval or signature for submittal. While the vast majority of states have the joint blessing of their education chief and governor, Georgia joins several other states where governors have opted not to sign onto the ESSA plan. The disagreement between Gov. Nathan Deal and State School Superintendent Richard Woods is tied to accountability and local control. In a series of letters between the two state leaders, Deal pushed for more targeted testing, beginning in kindergarten, and driven by the local school system, while Woods maintains systems have pushed for fewer mandated tests. Disagreement also revolves around Georgia’s annual “report card” on
school performance – the College and Career Ready Performance Index. The revised plan puts more emphasis on performance and achievement, and less emphasis on “exceeding the bar” for underperforming student groups. For example, the revised CCRPI would place less emphasis on enrollment in Advanced Placement courses, and more emphasis on the performance of students in these classes. Anecdotally, the points received on the CCRPR for AP participation may have caused schools to push unprepared students into rigorous courses. A spokesperson for the Georgia School Board Association says the differences run deep. “The disagreement on the CCRPI goes to the inputs or outcomes argument,” said Angela Palm, legislative director for the GSBA. “These are fundamental, philosophical differences that will not be resolved in a quick public discussion, if there is a resolution.” Local control and flexibility in testing has long been an issue for local school systems. Fulton County School leaders have been at the forefront of the debate, even writing some of the language in Senate Bill 211, signed into law in July, which gives systems more flexibility in testing. Fulton Schools is now one of the 30+ entities invited to be part of the Governor’s Assessment Innovation and Flexibility Task Force to further implement flexibility. “Serving on the task force allows Fulton County Schools to continue showing support for flexibility and accountability in testing to strategically focus our district’s time, energy and resources on innovative and flexible programs that meet the needs of students,” said Susan Hale, spokesperson for Fulton Schools.

Florida man who fled Irma gains fans with relief efforts Alpharetta recognizes those who volunteered to help storm victims By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Alpharetta city officials recently honored the volunteers who stepped forward to assist those displaced by Hurricane Irma in September. One of the honorees, in some ways the one who contributed most, is himself a Florida man who lost everything in the storm. At a ceremony Oct. 2, Mayor David Belle Isle presented a proclamation recognizing a host of residents, businesses and city employees who played key roles in providing relief to Irma’s victims. They included YMCA Director Scott Doll, who initiated the city’s actions by calling the mayor and getting the city to open its facilities to displaced visitors. It included Christine Young, supervisor at the Wills Park Community Center, where close to 70 people found a place to stay while their homes in Florida and South Georgia were besieged. Not present at the ceremony, however, was David Noringer, a Florida storm refugee who came up a day before Irma made landfall. He spent the next four days setting up cots, serving food and volunteering in other capaci-
ties at the Community Center. “He wasn’t just an evacuee,” Belle Isle said. “He came here to help.” Young, who supervised arrangements at the Community Center, said Noringer was a tireless worker. “He didn’t have to do these things,” she said, “but he insisted he needed to earn his keep. He took the initiative to do things without being asked.” This wasn’t Noringer’s first bout with adversity. A Chicago native, Noringer, 40, moved to Hudson, Fla., eight months ago from Brooklyn, where he grew up. Disabled by wounds sustained in a robbery years ago, Noringer was renting a room in Hudson, working part time on a crab boat to help make ends meet when Irma came calling. He said he called an information line for evacuee information and was referred to the Alpharetta shelter. “I was the first one to check into the shelter, and from my understanding that was the first time they were doing an evacuation,” Noringer said. “As soon as I got there, I jumped in with whatever I could help with.” Noringer greeted incoming families and gave them a tour of the facilities. He assembled cots, served food and volunteered for other odd jobs to show his gratitude. When the shelter closed down on Sept. 12, he helped pack up the cots. His reputation as a workhorse

It is a top employment resource and the leading veteran service organization specifically targeting the issues of unemployment and under employment among veterans. The organization’s numbers speak volumes. To date, Hire Heroes USA has helped more than 19,000 veterans and military spouses find meaningful careers in the civilian workforce, generating an estimated economic impact of more than $225 million. Hire Heroes USA was originally founded 10 years ago by an area Johns creek resident, John Bardis, to address concerns for unemployed veterans. Today, the national nonprofit provides clients with services for resume assistance, career coaching, practice interviews and job matching. Hire Heroes USA also continues to partner with a wide range of respected employers from small businesses to the Fortune 100 companies. The American Patriots Gala sponsored The Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Friday, November 3, 2017 will include an elaborate dinner and cocktails with a keynote presentation. When asked why she felt it important to sponsor the gala Lee with The Metropolitan Club said, “Reintegrating returning veterans into successful citizens is the work every single person in the community. Whether producing an outstanding event or volunteering as a professional the returning soldiers deserve our help.”
There is a current need for volunteer professionals to assist with the following: • Mock Interviews: Help a veteran or military spouse to successfully prepare for job interviews. You will conduct a mock phone interview asking typical interview questions, as if you were conducting a real interview, and then provide honest and friendly feedback about what they did well and opportunities for improvement. • Career Counseling: Speak with job-seeking veterans and military spouses about specific needs or interests related to their job search. The conversation could include topics such as networking strategies, knowledge sharing specific to an industry or position, or general career planning. • Guiding Federal Sector Applicants: Speak with veterans and military spouses who are interested in working for the federal government. You could provide advice on the USA Jobs portal, what a federal resume should look like, interviewing for a federal position and/or any general tips for federal applications. • Photography: There is a need for volunteer photographers to take professional headshot photos of veterans and military spouses at Hire Heroes USA Employment Workshops. Photographers can also help by attending any of our events and taking photos. • Outreach: Support our Transition Specialists by conducting follow-up with veterans and military spouses to learn how they are doing in their job search process. Volunteers must agree to a background check for this opportunity and will receive additional training on documentation procedures. • Social Networking: follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram. • Professionals are especially needed in these industries: Federal Sector, Security/Law Enforcement, IT (hardware & software), Cybersecurity, Human Resources, Emergency Management Operations, Logistics, Intelligence, Project Management, Consulting, Film/TV, Nursing.
Retired Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, New York Times best-selling author, brings his unique and captivating style to the keynote for this major fundraising event. “To have Jocko Willink join us for this event at The Metropolitan Club is not only an honor for our organization, but an opportunity for the local community to meet and learn from a great military warrior.” These programs are funded exclusively by private grants and public donations. Please join the community in supporting this worthwhile project on November 3rd.

State, Fulton laud new driver services center Alpharetta location heralds new level of cooperation By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Driver Services has moved into its new home in Alpharetta and applauded its new landlord: Fulton County. Officials said it has set a new level of governmental cooperation and will save taxpayers time and money. The Georgia DDS and the Fulton County Tag Office now share quarters at 11575 Maxwell Road, Alpharetta, (across the street from the Fulton County Schools bus lot). DDS Commissioner Spencer Moore said at the official ribbon-cutting last week the new location in the Fulton County government building of nearly 35,000 square feet (not counting the 16,000-square-foot warehouse) provides ample space. Fulton County built the building for its water resources operation, but that was before a completely incorporated North Fulton was even considered. So space was available. “I am extremely excited about being here. It is a much better location [than the former Sandy Springs office],” Moore said. Fulton County Post 1 Commissioner Liz Hausmann said locating in the same building with Fulton County water utility means greater convenience for

North Fulton residents. “We practically have a North Fulton Service Center north of the Chattahoochee,” Hausmann said. Fulton County Manager Dick Anderson praised the marriage of services also. “The biggest problem governments have is finding a good location for services. This is how local and state partnerships can make things happen that are good for our citizens,” Anderson said.

Now residents can register a vehicle, take a driver’s test or renew a license under the same roof. The new center has 21 customer service counters, up four from the previous facility. Twelve touchscreen knowledge testing machines and 12 computers are dedicated for customer applications and documentation. Seating can accommodate more than 100. Since the office opened Sept. 19, new efficiencies have been realized, Moore said. “The first day we opened, we served 727 customers. Their average wait time for services was 3 minutes 12 seconds,” he said. “We had 172 positive comment cards the first week.” To date, the 6,807 customers served have been helped in an average of 3 minutes 42 seconds. “That is a tremendous job,” Moore said. Ga. DDS Chairman David Connell called the office “one of the most innovative organizations” he had ever seen. It needs to be issuing 4.8 million drivers licenses annually statewide, he said. Fulton County District 2 Commissioner Bob Ellis said the county has had its bureaucratic problems in the past. “But this is a time we can be proud of our partnership and collaboration with another government,” Ellis said. State Sen. Brandon Beach said such inter-governmental collaboration is important for Georgia because it shows state agencies are taking a “customer service view” of the jobs they do. “It was an easy vote to support this,” Beach said.

Roswell City Council paves way for road resurfacing By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — A portion of Roswell’s roads will soon be resurfaced, thanks to two votes by the Roswell City Council at Monday night’s meeting. The council approved $1.7 million for resurfacing almost six miles of road. Funding for the project will be provided from the Citywide Road Resurfacing and Reconstruction account. The majority of the targeted roads are within neighborhoods, including Autumn Breeze Drive, Club Walk Trace, Stroup Court and Trevelyan Way. The project will help rejuvenate the asphalt and extend its lifespan thanks to new technology, said Director of Transportation Steve Acenbrak. This is the perfect time to start the project and reap the most benefits from the process, he added. To help the project, the council also approved a $116,722 contract with Pavement Technology Inc., to provide rejuvenation services to portions of six roads. Those roads include: Devereux Chase, Grimes Bridge Road, Mansell Road, Mountain Park Road, Nesbit Ferry Road and Norcross Street. Also at the meeting, several local high school students were given the chance to act as city youth officials for the first half of the meeting and both approve the consent agenda and read several proclamations. They represented several elected officials, including the mayor, councilmembers, state senator, state representative, fire chief, police chief and chief judge. Students came from local public and private schools, such as Roswell High School, The Cottage School and Fellowship High School. Alexander Larsen, from Centennial High School, was the acting Youth Mayor for the City of Roswell during the meeting.

Delays anticipated mailing city property tax bills By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Alpharetta residents, who normally receive their property tax bills in early October may have to wait a few more days before notifications are sent out. Alpharetta Finance Director Tom Harris told members of the City Council recently that delays in the county assessment process this summer, means tax bills would likely be delayed until later in October. The bills will have a due date for payment sometime in December. City officials confirmed this week the tax bills would likely be issued on or around Oct. 15. “Normally, we send out our bills Oct. 1 with a due date for Dec. 1,” Harris said. “Due to the delay from the county and the reassessment process, that has delayed the trickle-down to the school board and any others setting their millage rates.” Before tax bills can be issued, Harris said, all taxing jurisdictions must set their tax rates. The county must then submit all the documentation to the state Department of Revenue for
certification. The property tax process was thrown for a loop this year in Fulton County after the Assessor’s Office sent out revised notices to homeowners in the spring. The new higher assessments sparked a wave of protests from many property owners who saw the value of their homes climb by more than 50 percent. In all, 60 percent of homeowners saw at least a 13 percent increase. The protests spurred the Fulton County Commission to rescind the new appraisals in late June and revert back to 2016 assessed values. The juggling created confusion among cities and the school district at a time when they were trying to set their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. In Alpharetta, the City Council usually adopts its tax rate – or mill levy – in late June, just days ahead of its new fiscal year, July 1. This year, however, the mill levy wasn’t adopted until Sept. 25, nearly three months after the fiscal year began. Alpharetta officials say that the delay in billing will not adversely affect fiscal operations.

Fulton’s graduation rate highest among area’s large school systems Rate still falls below strategic goal of 90% By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The graduation rate for Fulton County Schools continues its upward trend, with the Class of 2017 posting a graduation rate of nearly 87 percent. While that figure is the highest graduation rate among large systems in metro Atlanta, it still falls short of Fulton’s five-year strategic goal to reach a 90 percent graduation rate by 2017. “While the district did not reach the 90 percent goal for all schools, overall we experienced extraordinary progress in all areas of the county. Over five years, the district’s graduation rate increased more than 11 percent – from 75.5 percent to 86.8 percent – and in North Fulton, nearly every high school improved and exceeded the 90 percent goal,” said Susan Hale, spokesperson for Fulton Schools. Of the system’s 19 high schools, 12 reached the 90 percent goal, including all eight traditional high schools in North Fulton.
Cambridge and Chattahoochee high schools posted the system’s highest graduation rates of just over 98 percent for the Class of 2017. Following close behind were Northview (96.8) and Johns Creek (96.5) high schools. Statewide, the push to increase Georgia’s previously lackluster graduation rates seems to be working. In the past five years, statewide rates have gone from just under 70 percent to nearly 81 percent this year, the first time in Georgia’s history that graduation rates have exceeded 80 percent. “It’s wonderful to see Georgia’s graduation rate continue to rise because we’re not just talking about data points,” said State School Superintendent Richard Woods. “We’re talking about individual students who are moving on, ready and prepared, to their next phase of life.” He noted the push toward personalizing education for each student, and moving away from a standard approach, has been the key to keeping students motivated and in school. In Fulton, the move to personalized learning has long been a focus of the curriculum, with students being allowed to move ahead to more challenging courses when ready, and

ArtAround Roswell hosts benefit night Group hopes to raise $60,000 to keep sculptures By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell’s art-loving community is rallying together to keep the art from this year’s sculpture tour. Dozens showed up Oct. 5 to the pARTy Around Roswell to benefit the Roswell Arts Fund and its annual sculpture tour, which showcases works from artists around the nation. The sculptures, however, only crop up for a few months before disappearing forever — unless the city and community pitch in to buy the art. This year, the group behind the tour is planning to buy four of the sculptures. The group estimates that it will need $60,000. As part of the effort to raise the funds, the pARTy Around Roswell featured a live painting by local artist Ann Bailey capturing the spirit of the night. The painting sold for $1,100 during a live auction. The highest bidder, Bob Hagan, will have himself and his daughter, Brooke McGee, added to the center of the work to commemorate the evening. The Roswell Arts Fund’s first priority is to purchase Sentience, which currently resides in the Heart of Roswell Park on Canton Street. The sculpture is a reflective stainless steel model of a blooming bloodroot flower created by Atlanta-based artists David Landis. The Downtown Development Authority has already donated $10,000 for these efforts and is challenging local businesses and organizations to match the funds. According to the Downtown Devel-

the city,” Schultz said. “We would like to see this work of art remain permanently in this location.” Guest speaker Ann Cramer agreed and noted that public art helps connect strangers and fosters unity. The sculptures, along with the rest of the art community in Roswell, help to build and define the character of the city. Last year, Roswell was able to buy and keep the sculpture Smoke in Town Square and Oak Leaf Triptych in Roswell Area Park. To help their efforts, the Roswell Arts Fund created a companion audio tour guide app, Otocast. The free app helps gauge public interest in the works and lets visitors learn about their favorite works, vote and contribute funds. This year’s ArtAround Roswell has
been highly successful so far, according to Roswell Arts Fund Marketing Partner Whitney Parks. Already, they have received more donations and higher ticket sales to their gala than last year. The group has already started planning for next year’s sculpture tour and has received more than 45 individual entries from artists across 15 states. Additionally, the 2018 tour will be held for 11 months instead of nine, allowing for continual access to public art in Roswell. ArtAround Roswell’s next event will be held at Riverside Park on Oct. 28 and will demonstrate the art of glass blowing. Danish company names Roswell as North American headquarters Kamstrup to bring 52 jobs to Fulton By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — One overseas businesses has recently decided to call Roswell its home away from home, not just for the state of Georgia, but for the entirety of North America. The Georgia Department of Economic Development recently announced that the Danish company Kamstrup has selected Roswell as its new region headquarters, bringing 52 jobs to the area. “It’s incredibly significant to the strength and prestige of both the business community and the city as a whole,” said Roswell Inc’s Executive Director Steve Stroud. “Not only does this create new, high quality jobs in Roswell, but Kamstrup is also bringing with them a large investment of international equipment to this location. And we expect they will continue growing and expanding their operations here in the coming decade.” Kamstrup is an international company spread out across 24 countries that supplies electricity, district heating and water metering solutions. Founded in 1946, Kamstrup prides itself on measuring and managing both energy and water consumption worldwide. It is headquartered in Skanderborg, Denmark and employs over 1,200 people. It has 18 distributors in America. “By the rapidly growing sales in the USA and need for a production plant in North America, Atlanta and Fulton County was the natural choice,” said
Kamstrup CEO Lars Bo Kristensen. “We see an increasing need and interest for intelligent and accurate water metering solutions for the water utilities. But also, the individual consumer has an increased focus on the usage, as the cost for clean water increases year by year.” The move was facilitated along with Roswell Inc, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Danish Trade Commission in Atlanta, Metro Atlanta Chamber and Georgia Power. Roswell Inc got involved in the project in the beginning on 2017, when Kamstrup had a small office presence in Sandy Springs. When the company began to seek a larger office for a possible headquarters in the metro Atlanta area, Roswell Inc jumped on the opportunity to present Roswell as a top choice. According to Carisa Turner, Roswell Inc’s director of communications and public relations, Kamstrup chose the

Downtown Lawrenceville awash in new development Meeting with decision makers
Suburban downtown areas are flush with redevelopment these days as cities and developers rush to meet market demands of residents who want to be close to where some action is. Lawrenceville is the latest to double down on this idea. A couple years ago, or really any time in the history of the Atlanta metro area, I would have trumpeted what is going on in downtown Lawrenceville as epoch GEOFF SMITH development. But these days, what they Assurance Financial, are doing is keeping up with what’s gsmith@lendtheway.com going on in other cities like Alpharetta, Sugar Hill, Chamblee and Sandy Springs. All that said, there are at least three major projects going on in downtown Lawrenceville that will transform a city that already has seen significant downtown development. The projects include almost 40 acres of mixed-use development and a 2.2-mile linear park that will connect Georgia Gwinnett College with the Downtown District and open up development opportunities along the way. The biggest project being proposed is a 32-acre development behind the Lawrenceville Lawn Park and around City Hall that would include 600 residential units – 435 multifamily units and 159 single-family and townhouse units. Within that project would also be about 15,000 square feet of retail. Novare Group is the developer and is scheduled to present the project to the city in December, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Just across the Lawrenceville square and on 7.5 acres that used to be the site of the now demolished Lawrenceville High School (built in 1895), Richport Properties is proposing a $20 million mixed-use development. The project, being called City View, would include 58 single-family homes, townhomes, “cottages” and office space. According to the AJC, the developer is under a purchase-sale agreement with Lawrenceville’s Downtown Development Authority. The linear park is a significant project, mostly because of the opportunities it will create. This project has been in the planning stages for several years, and the city has recently hired Georgia Development Partners to run construction of the project, which is expected to begin next month, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. In addition to a new two-lane road, the project will include multi-use trails, bike paths, roundabouts and landscaping features. Multiple pocket parks and detention ponds are also shown in the plans – as are spaces for new townhomes, a restaurant, some retail space and a multi-level residential structure. One of the biggest things this corridor would do is connect the roughly 11,000 students enrolled at Georgia Gwinnett College with the downtown district and the two other
A rendering of a planned 32-acre mixed-use development that will include 435 multifamily units, 159 single-family and townhouse units, and 15,000 square feet of retail, all in downtown Lawrenceville. projects mentioned earlier. The corridor will also fold in an existing brewery named Slow Pour Brewing Company and 550 Trackside, a popular event facility housed in the city’s old train station. It should take about a year to demolish some of the buildings in the corridor to make way for the new road and trails. At that point, construction on the new infrastructure is said to begin. I imagine that retail businesses in downtown Lawrenceville are chomping at the bit to see these projects completed. With almost 660-residential units going in, they will see a significant increase in night-time and weekend customers. And with the office development and the connection to Georgia Gwinnett College, they will see a significant increase in daytime customers during the week. It will be a good time to be doing business in Lawrenceville for sure. Geoff Smith is a mortgage banker with Assurance Financial focusing on residential home loans for refinances and home purchases. How are you getting access to decision makers to sell your product or service? Is it taking you a long time to meet with someone who can give you a purchase order? Have you spent countless DICK JONES hours talking with Founder & President people who have Jones Simply Sales no authority to buy from you? Meeting with decision makers quickly is an important component to not only winning more business, but also getting business quicker. Depending on your customer profile, you may have immediate access to decision makers. For example, if you are selling to consumers who visit your place of business, you literally are talking with the buyer. That’s the easiest access you’ll get. However, if you’re selling in a business-to-business environment, you’ll often have to navigate from lower positions in the organization until you reach someone who can make a decision. A study conducted by the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler business school concluded that the easiest way to gain access to decision makers is to have someone who reports to them bring you there. In other words, if you can convince a direct reporter of a decision maker that it’s in their best interest to introduce you to their boss, you’ll be quickly talking to a decision maker. When plotting your course to gain access to decision makers, study the company’s organization chart. It’s far easier to gain access to lower level resources, show them what value you’ll provide, and have them take you to the decision maker. And when you’re meeting with the decision maker, you’ll be getting more business!

Nutrition: You are what you absorb Jonathan Stegall, MD It is commonly said, “You are what you eat.” The idea that food is more than just an energy source is one we should always keep in mind. For this reason, I highly recommend a diet rich
in healthy, minimally processed organic foods. Processed foods, especially those containing sugar, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, and artificial colors should be avoided. Although a healthy diet is a great start, it isn’t enough, especially when

dealing with cancer. It turns out that you are not just what you eat, but what you absorb. Once food is ingested, it passes down the esophagus and into the stomach. Acid and enzymes begin to break down the STEGALL food so that it can be absorbed in the intestines. This process is inefficient for many people, leading to poor absorption of their food. The deleterious effects of this are many, and include the digestive issues we see so commonly today as well as autoimmune disease, psychiatric disease, and cancer. How do we fix it? In addition to a healthy diet, supplementation with digestive enzymes as well as a probiotic are frequently needed. Once digestion and absorption are optimized, we see treatments start to work better and quality of life improve. Johns Creek Dermatology At Johns Creek Dermatology, we are a complete practice, treating both adult and pediatric patients, offering cutting edge surgical treatment options in office. Incorporating surgical procedures into our daily practice allows us to provide the most comprehensive care to our patients. Mohs surgery, a technique for removing skin cancers, and the most recent and exciting addition to our practice, is the optimal treatment for many basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, including those
in cosmetically and functionally important areas around the eyes, face, scalp, fingers, etc. Mohs is also recommended for carcinomas that are large, aggressive or growing rapidly or have recurred after previous treatment. The procedure is done in stages, all in one visit, while the patient waits between each stage. After removing a layer of tissue, the surgeon examines it under a microscope in an on-site lab. If any cancer cells remain, the surgeon knows the exact area where they are and removes another layer of tissue from that precise location, while spar-
ing as much healthy tissue as possible. The doctor repeats this process until no cancer cells remain. Dr. Shereen Timani is committed to providing exemplary care for her patients, incorporating her double Board Certifications & 17 years of expertise in Dermatology and Dermatopathology, and is excited to offer the gold standard in treatment for skin cancer. A Q&A with Centered Recovery Programs A mindfulness-based non-12 step substance abuse treatment program that offers outpatient services in the Roswell/Alpharetta area. Q: What kind of program is offered to clients at Centered Recovery? A: We offer a completely unique curriculum of psychoeducational classes combined with mindfulness practices, group and individual therapy with fully licensed clinicians, art therapy, neurological feedback therapy and other adjunct therapies for a completely specialized recovery experience. Our clients can choose the adjunct therapies and even some of the groups and educational classes that will be most beneficial for them, which means their recovery is uniquely customized for their own needs. We also offer flexible scheduling to fit almost any lifestyle, including outpatient, intensive outpatient, and full-time day treatment. Our clients can schedule their recovery appointments and still be with their family to cheer on their children’s sports teams and theater productions, have the love and support of their family and
friends on nights and weekends, or be at important work meetings as needed. We call it “real time recovery”. Q: Okay, explain “real time recovery”. A: Real time recovery is the ability to get the help you need without having to leave your life behind, even for a few months the way residential treatment requires. With our unique and flexible scheduling, our clients can take what they learn home with them every afternoon, and this allows their loved ones to share in their progress and recovery as well. They aren’t isolated away from the support and care of loved ones at what can be one of the most vulnerable time in their lives. Experiencing recovery while still participating in their real life allows them to work through issues with their addiction, relationships, or work and get feedback from their counselors to continue to make progress— not just recover in theory and have it fall apart once home. Q: What is your facility like? A: Our facility is beautiful, located in a private location within a physi-
NORTHSIDE CHAPEL
cian’s office park, and is serene and comfortable. For clients concerned with privacy issues, our office faces a beautiful wooded area away from the road, and is without through traffic. Our clients enjoy walking at lunch or break times among the trees. Q: What kind of clients do you treat? A: Our facility only treats adults over the age of 18, who have a minor to moderate substance abuse issue with drugs or alcohol. We also treat clients who have attempted recovery elsewhere and were unsuccessful, as well as those who are looking for an alternative to the 12 step approach. Q: What makes Centered Recovery unique? A: We are the only facility in Georgia that offers this mindfulness-based alternative approach. Our program is compatible with any other treatment model that a client may wish to use in conjunction with ours, however it is religion and 12 step free. The program is based on the newest scientific research which shows the effectiveness of everything we do.

The New Strong Gaining control over your fitness and your life For many people, aging equals lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle. While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism. Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay active and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground. What is meaningful exercise? A critical component of stimulating the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momentary muscular failure in each ex-
ercise performed. With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved. Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exercise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it. What is the SuperSlow Zone solution? The SuperSlow Zone protocol is the original and genuine slow-motion, personal strength training workout. The exercise protocol has been proven successful in both building muscle and increasing resting metabolism, thus allowing the body to burn more calories at rest. SuperSlow Zone provides a safe and effective workout in a short amount of time so that you can get in, get out, and get on with your busy life!

Dental anxiety and how to overcome it By Dr. David Remaley If you ever get nervous just thinking about going to the dentist, you’re not alone. Perhaps you’re scared the visit might hurt or you haven’t been in a while and not sure what the dentist will find. Many people are anxious due to an unpleasant dental experience in their past. Whatever your reason, the right dental team will make sure your dental and your emotional health are taken care of. The more you delay – or just don’t go – to the dentist, the higher your risk of developing dental problems that will make gearing up for future dental visits more difficult. In fact, seeing your dentist regularly can actually make the entire process – from making an appointment to sailing through it – much easier on many levels. Use these strategies at your next appointment to help ease your anxiety and strengthen your smile. 1. Speak up Anyone with anxiety knows sharing your feelings makes a world of difference. If you’re tense or anxious, do yourself a favor and get your concerns off your chest. Your dentist and dental team are better able to treat you if they know your needs. • Tell your dentist about your anxiety. When you book your appointment, tell the receptionist you’re nervous about dental visits. Remind the dentist and dental staff about your anxiety when you arrive. Share any bad experiences you may have had in the past, and ask for suggestions on coping strategies. • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes knowing what is going to happen alleviates any fears of the unknown. • Agree on a signal. Let your dentist know by raising your hand if you need to take a break during an exam. • If you experience pain even with a local anesthetic, tell your dentist. Some patients get embarrassed about their pain tolerance or don’t want to interrupt a dentist during a procedure. Talk with your dentist about pain before it starts so your dentist knows how to communicate with you and make it more comfortable. 2. Distract yourself
SHARE northfulton.com
Taking your mind off the exam may seem impossible when you’re nervous, but there are some things that that can help distract your thoughts. • Wear headphones. If the sound of the drill bothers you, bring REMALEY headphones so you can listen to your favorite music or audiobook. Some dental offices even have televisions or show DVDs. • Occupy your hands by squeezing a stress ball or playing with a small handheld object, like a fidget spinner. • Imagine your happy place and visualize yourself at a relaxing beach or garden. 3. Use mindfulness techniques Relaxation starts in the mind. Try deep breathing exercises to help relax tension in your muscles. • Count your breaths. Inhale slowly and then exhale for the same number of counts. Do this five times while you’re waiting for your appointment, or during breaks while you’re sitting in the dental chair. • Do a body scan. Concentrate on relaxing your muscles, one body part at a time. Start with your head and work your way down to your toes. For example, you can focus on releasing tension starting in your forehead, then your cheeks, your neck and down the rest of your body. By Amy Hentschel So many of our senior care phone calls come from stressed out, burned out family caregivers. Their stories all have the same familiar details including years of giving personalized one-on-one care, sleepless nights, injuries of their own and complete frustration and exhaustion. The most important element of all runs through each family’s story, the sense of duty and obligation to the ones they love. “I know I can’t keep doing this, but I’m ok right now”. “I promised her I would never put her into an institution”. “No one can care for my mother like I can”. Here are some startling statistics about caregivers in America today: • There are 65 million caregivers providing 20 hours or more of unpaid care a week • Of these family caregivers, 60% work outside of the home • 70% suffer from depression • Women make up 66% of the caregivers and 64% of those live with the loved one • An estimated 30-40% of caregivers die before the ones they are caring for do National Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with AARP; November 2009
When we receive these calls, our goal is to come along side the family in need and help put resources in place to begin to relieve the heavy burden. Our goal is get the professionals in place either through HENTSCHEL home care services, adult day programs, or placement in assisted living to take over the physical care giving. Only then can that family caregiver return to caring for themselves and being the family member they were meant to be. We finally see the family restored and everyone back in their proper roles. I often tell families, “Caring for your loved one 24 hours/day, 7 days/week is a task we simply weren’t designed to perform. It’s like asking yourself to fly like a bird. It sounds like a lovely endeavor until you step off the limb”. Once the care is in place, we connect our families to the many and wonderful support groups in Gwinnett County. It helps to talk with others that have walked in your shoes and have gone before you. Amy Hentschel is a senior care consultant and owner at Senior Provisions, LLC. Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your practice? Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road. And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of
which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued. How did you react to TAYLOR the news of winning both these titles? To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice

Jordan Orthodontics Thanks You! By Dr. Jeff Jordan
Wow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years. We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last four years! You don’t win
Premier: Continued from Page 32 here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm. As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment? After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists. I feel so fortunate to be able to address both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service. You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – what is it? And what does “MOHS” stand for? Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named
many awards after high school, so it is a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 21,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. We can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. No thank you list would be complete without thanking my mom and dad who helped me start my practice. Also, a large shout out to my office manager, Laurie Stinger, who has been on board from day one. Orthodontics is a team effort and at Jordan Orthodontics we have been blessed with great patients and a great team over the years! Thanks again!!!
after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers. As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor. Is there anything else that you would like to share? I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. They care and it shows! And I am so grateful! So, to our team at Premier Dermatology, thank you for the fantastic job that you do every day! Thank you Dr. Taylor, and Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta.

WEEK 7 (OCT. 6) RECAP
Alpharetta, Centennial win big against region foes By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com
Class 7A South Forsyth 38, Lambert 0 — In perhaps Forsyth’s most heated rivalry, South Forsyth remained unbeaten with a convincing shutout win over Lambert Friday night. Jared Honey scored a 61-yard rushing touchdown in the opening minutes and the War Eagles kept their foot on the gas the remainder of the game. South scored 17 points in the second quarter and added 14 in the third to power their way to a win in both team’s region opener. Quarterback Cal Morris connected with Jaylen Pearson for two touchdowns in the win. Lambert’s shutout loss was its first since 2011. Milton 17, West Forsyth 14 — Milton head coach Adam Clack got a win over his former school when the Eagles outlasted West Forsyth in a region thriller Friday night. Milton took a 17-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter on a Hayden Hairston 23-yard field goal. West Forsyth then drove 69 yards on eight plays but faced a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line. West quarterback Zachary Burns rolled to his right but passed left to a waiting Garrett Woodall. Woodall came down with the reception, but was tackled mere inches from the goal line, forcing a turnover on downs. Milton took over, rushed for a first down and then ran out the clock in victory formation. Roswell 36, Lassiter 30 (OT) — Roswell captured its 15th straight region victory by outlasting Lassiter Friday night. Both of Roswell’s wins this season have come in overtime. The Hornets opened a 23-0 lead in the first half, but Lassiter fought back to tie the game at 30-30 late in the fourth. Lassiter looked poised to capture the win by recovering a blocked punt at Roswell’s 15-yard line with under 20
seconds remaining. However, their field goal attempt was missed. Lassiter opened overtime on offense but again failed to make a field goal. Roswell’s Kamonty Jett secured the win with a touchdown rush for the Hornets. Roswell rushed for nearly 400 yards in the win. North Forsyth 58, Forsyth Central 0 — North Forsyth put on another offensive display Friday night, blasting Forsyth Central to open Region 5-AAAAAA play with a win. The Raiders got five touchdowns from Bryson Trigg in the first half and led 41-0 at the break. North’s defense held the Bulldogs to under 100 total yards of offense and forced five turnovers.
Class 6A Chattahoochee 38, Johns Creek 31 — Chattahoochee ended their twogame skid against Johns Creek and improved to 4-1 in region play with a close win over the Gladiators Friday night. Hooch led 22-17 after a back and forth first half, but Johns Creek would take the lead on a 28-yard pass from Zach Gibson to Zach Williams. Hooch responded with a 4-yard touchdown rush from Andrew Thomas on its ensuing drive. But Johns Creek was back on top just over a minute later when Gibson connected with Nate Hope for a 68-yard touchdown to put Johns Creek on top, 31-30. Chattahoochee reclaimed the lead early in the fourth with a passing score from Jack Corrigan to Marcus Stephen. Johns Creek had a drive to potentially force overtime late in the fourth, but a turnover on downs allowed Hooch to secure the win. Alpharetta 37, Pope 14 — Alpharetta got off to a slow start but put up 30 unanswered points against Pope to remain perfect in Region 7-AAAAAA. Matthew Downing threw three touchdowns passes, and Nolan Edmonds scored on rushes of 53 and 9 yards in the win. Alpharetta’s defense forced two
turnovers and held Pope to one score after their game-opening drive. Cambridge 38, Dunwoody 16 — After starting the season 0-5, Cambridge has now put together a win streak after their lopsided victory over Dunwoody Friday night. Cambridge jumped out to a 21-3 lead with scores from Matt McCree and two touchdown throws from Hogan Dykes. The Bears’ Ty Wald and McCree scored in the second half with Victor Valentine adding a field goal. Cambridge’s 38 points was its highest total of the season. Centennial 48, Northview 17 — Centennial’s Max Brosmer had another standout performance for the Knights in their fourth-straight region win. Brosmer went 13-18 passing for 320 yards with three touchdowns and added 29 yards rushing. The Knights’ Emeka Nwanze rushed for 103 yards. Northview took an early 7-0 lead, but Centennial scored 20 unanswered points and led 27-10 at the half. Two big plays from Centennial — a 60-yard touchdown pass to Cal Dickie and 80-yard scoring rush from Nwanze — allowed the Knights to cruise to the win in the fourth quarter.
Class 4A Blessed Trinity 50, White Co. 14 — Blessed Trinity used a strong second half to improve to 5-0 all-time in Region 7-AAAA. Early turnovers from both teams resulted in plenty of scoring in the first half, but BT would be the only team to find the scoreboard in the second. BT rushed for 245 yards in the win and recovered three White County fumbles.
Treating full range of urologic conditions for over 25 years.
Class A-Private Whitefield Academy 31, Fellowship Christian 24 — Fellowship’s loss to Whitefield Friday night wasn’t as devastating as their last-second loss to Walker last week, but it was another distressing outcome that came late in the game. Fellowship led 24-10 early in the fourth quarter, but Whitefield cut the lead to a single score with a 70-yard touchdown pass just a few minutes later. Whitefield then recovered an onside kick and later scored to tie the game at 24-24. On Fellowship’s ensuing drive, a holding call negated a long touchdown pass and the Paladins were eventually forced to punt. With six minutes remaining, Whitefield got another long scoring play, a 40-yard rush, to take the lead and hold on for the win. Fellowship’s two straight region losses are its first since 2014. Mount Pisgah 49, St. Francis 27 — Mount Pisgah scored over 45 points for the fourth consecutive game and remained unbeaten in region play with a win over St. Francis Friday night. St. Francis scored a touchdown on their opening possession for the second straight game, but Mount Pisgah put up 21 unanswered points

to regain the lead for good. St. Francis trailed by 28-20 early in the third, but Pisgah scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter and hung on for the win. Patriots’ quarterback Jacob Cendoya had four total touchdowns in the win and Kai Williams rushed for two scores. King’s Ridge 14, Pinecrest Academy 7 — King’s Ridge snapped a four-game losing streak and earned their first win over Pinecrest since 2013 Friday night. The Tigers trailed early after Micky Mangan connected with Michael Birozes for a 90-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. Pinecrest held their slim 7-0 lead until late in the first half. The Tigers would tie the game with a touchdown reception from Hayden Milling in the final minute of the second quarter. In the low-scoring affair, the final score of the game came from Tigers’ quarterback Casey Flanigan who rushed in from 1 yard out in the third quarter.
MARIETTA, Ga. — It didn’t look like the most promising start for Region 7-AAAAAA leaders Alpharetta. Facing Pope (2-4, 2-2) on the road, the Greyhounds needed just seven plays to find the end zone on the opening drive of the game. Then, on Alpharetta’s ensuing possession, the Raiders went three and out. Alpharetta’s offense also stalled on its second drive and the score remained 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. “It seems like every time we play an away game we have an interesting start,” Alpharetta head coach Jacob Nichols said. “We knew they were going to come out and hit us in the mouth, and they did.” But then the Raiders got a spark, the first that led them to a 37-14 region win. Alpharetta’s Dylan Schorr pinned Pope on their own 1-yard line with a punt. Three plays later, Alpharetta forced a safety as Pope threw a pass into the flat in the end zone. Alpharetta (5-1, 4-0) then put together a quick, five-play drive capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from
Matthew Downing to Spencer Gaddis. Alpharetta’s defense then found its rhythm, disrupting Pope’s shift-heavy offense, setting up a punt and another touchdown pass from Downing to Gaddis to extend the Raiders’ lead to 16-6. “Our defense responded, and our offense got some big plays and it turned out in our favor,” Nichols said. In the second half, Alpharetta’s stout defensive play continued while their offense racked up yards and points. Nolan Edmonds, who missed multiple games earlier this season with an injury, opened the second half scoring with a 53-yard touchdown rush. Edmonds and Kevin Watkins shared carries throughout the night. “It definitely makes us a little more potent having [Edmonds] back,” Nichols said. Having Watkins and Edmonds will make the Raiders’ a rushing threat, he added. “Kevin did a great job when Edmonds couldn’t go and definitely earned his right to be on the field,” he said. “Ed-
monds being a senior leader, he’s been earning it for a long time.” In addition to rushing scores, Downing added his third touchdown pass of the game, this time to Luke Estes after a fumble recovery from the Raiders’ Dane Motley. The Raiders opened a 30-6 lead before a roughing the kicker penalty kept a Pope drive alive in the fourth. The Greyhounds would eventually score and add a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 30-14. Alpharetta then ate away nearly six minutes of clock in 12 plays, capped off by an Edmonds 9-yard touchdown. A Jaycee Horn interception in the final two minutes iced the game. With the win, the Raiders improved to 4-0 in region play and remained alone at the top of the standings. The Raiders will host Johns Creek (2-5, 2-3) Friday in a matchup that has resulted in two-straight years of heartbreaking losses for Alpharetta. “It’s one that we want to win because they have gotten the best of us the last two years,” Nichols said. “We’ll work hard this week, it’ll be nice to be home, and hopefully we can take care of business.”

CHATTAHOOCHEE 38, JOHNS CREEK 31:
Cougars win shootout over crosstown rivals By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Crosstown rivals Chattahoochee and Johns Creek played the eighth installment of their rivalry Friday night with Hooch coming out on top, 38-31, in a game that went down to the wire. “This was absolutely a big win,” Chattahoochee head coach Vince Strine said. “Hats off to Johns Creek, they were up for a fight. But our guys were, too.” The shootout featured seven lead changes, a goal-line stand in the final minutes and a gutsy 4th-and-1 call from Chattahoochee to seal the win. “It was definitely a see-saw game,” Strine said. Chattahoochee built the largest lead of the game midway through the first quarter after making a field goal and adding a rushing touchdown from quarterback Jack Corrigan. Hooch’s touchdown was set up by a snap over the head of Johns Creek’s punter that was recovered by the Cougars inside the 5-yard line. Johns Creek later tied the game at 10-10 with a Luke Venco field goal, the start of a flurry of scoring in the second quarter. Hooch scored from four yards out with an Andrew Thomas rush but the PAT was missed. Johns Creek responded quickly with a 74-yard pass from Zach Gibson to Matt Casey to go up 17-16. With 44 seconds remaining in the half, Corrigan hit Andrew Thomas for a 30-yard touchdown as Hooch regained the lead. Three more lead changes took place in the third quarter, and Johns Creek led 31-30 entering the fourth. Chattahoochee would regain the lead on a 7-yard pass from Corrigan to Marcus Stephen and a 2-point conversion with nine minutes remaining in the game. Corrigan threw for 172 yards and rushed for 121 with four total touchdowns in the win. In the final minutes, Johns Creek drove inside Hooch’s five-yard line and looked poised to tie the game once again. But Hooch’s defense would stand tall with their backs against the wall. “We let them out of a fourth down conversion and a 3rd-and-39 earlier in the game,” Strine said. “But at the very end when we had to have it, we forced a turnover on downs.” But the game still wasn’t sealed.
Chattahoochee needed a first down in order to run out the clock to secure the win. After three plays, Johns Creek’s defense held the Cougars to a 4th-and-1 in their own territory. But instead of punting the ball away, Strine and Chattahoochee decided to play for the win. “To me, it was a no-brainer,” Strine said. Hooch attempted to draw Johns Creek off sides. When that didn’t work, they let Corrigan run a QB sneak, which drew enough yardage to gain a first down to ice the win. With the win, the Cougars improved to 4-1 in Region 7-AAAAAA and sit in third in the standings. It’s the first 4-1 start to region play for Chattahoochee since 2011. “As the program is concerned, it’s another step taken to where we want to be,” Strine said. Chattahoochee wants to be at the top after failing to make the playoffs the last four years, but Strine said the Cougars’ will not get ahead of themselves. “Our next biggest game of the year is Pope,” he said. The Cougars have a bye this week before hosting the Greyhounds Oct. 20. Johns Creek fell to 2-3 in region play and face region leaders Alpharetta on the road next Friday.

Local residents dominate national equestrian awards ATLANTA — Three local women, Kathy, Jessica and Megan Gilker, recently received multiple awards for their horses: JAG Kalico Kid, Conkar and CBS Good to Go. The trio achieved a total of four national championship wins and was recognized in 15 national Top Ten lists. The divisions they competed in included training, first and second level
dressage, hunters and “Sport Horse Under Saddle.” The horses were trained and raised on the farm of Kathy and James Gilker, where Jessica and Megan would often train as well. They rode for almost their entire lives and then became lifetime members of US Equestrian and several other horse-related associations.

North Fulton SWAT pitches armored vehicle, robotic equipment Alpharetta Police chief says devices improve public safety By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com. ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Three North Fulton cities will consider sharing costs to provide local SWAT team members with an armored vehicle and small robotic devices for use in lethal situations. The proposal, introduced at an Oct. 2 workshop before the Alpharetta City Council, came one day after a gunman opened fire on concert attendees along the Las Vegas Strip, killing 58 and wounding hundreds of others. The presentation had been placed on the council agenda the prior week, but elected officials referenced the Las Vegas incident as a timely reminder of what law enforcement agencies are faced with in today’s society. Alpharetta Public Safety Director John Robison told council members that the new equipment would increase safety for police and citizens. “The horrific events that happened last night in Las Vegas are a reminder to us all the evil that we deal with in the world,” Robison said. “We’ve actually been talking about this for months and months.” Sometimes, law enforcement is criticized for “our toys,” Robison said. But an armored vehicle and miniature robots will help protect police not only in situations where they come under fire but collect informa-

tion about potential threats without risking lives. The North Fulton SWAT Team, commanded by Alpharetta Police Lt. D.L. French, consists of close to 50 officers from Alpharetta, Roswell and Milton. French said the total cost for the equipment,
$376,000, would be shared by each city according to population. Under those terms, Roswell would contribute $180,000, Alpharetta $127,000, and Milton’s share would be $67,000. Currentlythe North Fulton SWAT Team has no safe way to rescue citizens or officers who are under direct gunfire, French said,. The team also has no safe way to approach buildings where crimes are unfolding. The armored rescue vehicle alone has a price tag of $312,000. Its annual maintenance cost is about $500, with insurance costs estimated at $900 per year. The agencies are also considering two small robotic devices for the SWAT Team. The Avatar III robot is a large tracked robot that would give police the ability to carry on a conversation with a suspect without having to make entry. The purchase price is $48,036. Its expected annual operations and maintenance cost is $100. The Recon Scout XL robot is a small micro-robot that can traverse varied terrain and can be thrown into doorways or windows from a safe distance to provide audio and video of the environment. Its cost is $16,123, with estimated annual maintenance costs of $100. French said the department is recommending Alpharetta’s share of the cost for the equipment be funded through drug seizure funds. Alpharetta city leaders are expected to consider the purchase at a meeting in the coming weeks. Officials in Roswell and Milton are expected to hear the proposal for the first time later this month.

ALPHARETTA’S WIRE & WOOD MUSIC FESTIVAL:
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Alpharetta-Roswell Herald | October 12, 2017 | 39
City’s songwriters’ music fest pitch-perfect Crowds enjoy personal touch By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – A breezy fall evening in the laid-back part of Alpharetta’s downtown. And there is music in the air. Real music, everywhere. That is the Alpharetta Songwriter’s Festival, Oct. 5 and 6, back for the fifth year. Bringing in 25 artists over two nights – Friday night is the free concert at Avalon with all of downtown Alpharetta’s pubs open along with booths on Milton Avenue Saturday night – proved to be a hit with the mix of young and old patrons. Many brought their children along to sit on the grass or in a local restaurant – it was all about the music and getting mellow (to borrow a term from the ‘60s). Janet Rodgers, president and CEO of the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the crowds love the intimacy of the venues – Avalon and three stages downtown on Friday night, six stages downtown on Saturday night. With the exception of Avalon, all of the venues are accessible by foot. You could stand under the traffic light at Milton Avenue and Main Street and hit most of the venues with a rock, actually. Since most of the music is acoustic or just electric guitar, no one is drowned out. “The artists at Wire and Wood this year were captivating,” Rodgers said. “The crowds loved the more intimate

Getting a chance to hear them interact with audiences is a wow factor you can’t get at most concerts. “These artists have wonderful stories behind the songs they write and sing,” Rodgers said. “It is very entertaining for the people who attend, and it’s great to see Downtown bustling with people walking, drinking, eating and enjoying the entertainment. Wire and Wood is a great fit for Alpharetta.” Amen.

tracking each student when they first enter high school as a freshman, and whether they graduate within four years. In the past, graduation rates included students who took more than four years to graduate, and did not account for transfers and dropouts. Woods noted that while all states use the same calculation, each state sets its own requirements for students to earn a regular high school diploma. Georgia, he noted, has among the highest requirements in the nation for graduation. Area schools see long term improvements
Irma: Continued from Page 10 spread. The mayor stopped by for a visit. Another city staffer came by to shake his hand and present him with a job application. When he returned for Florida, Noringer found everything destroyed. He was ineligible for FEMA assistance because he had no lease on the room he was renting. So, he packed up a couple of weeks ago and headed to Phoenix where he enrolled in a resettlement program. “I just had a thought in my head,” he said. “It’s still warm. In Phoenix, I don’t have to worry about snow, and I don’t have to worry about any more hurricanes. It don’t rain in the desert so I don’t have to worry about getting flooded anymore.” He said he’s trying to start over in Phoenix with a positive outlook, but he’s keeping his fingers crossed about a job in Alpharetta. “I most definitely would like to get back,” Noringer said. “The way the community came together in such a short period of time, it brought tears to my eyes.”
