Is LASIK Affordable for me? By Samir Vira, M.D.
Individuals with glasses and contact lenses are often steered away from LASIK or refractive surgery due to concern for its high cost. Many think of it as a luxury such as a cruise vacation or an expensive watch. But when you sit down and analyze the actual cost and benefits of LASIK, you may be surprised to find out that it is more affordable than you expected. The goal of LASIK and refractive surgery is to allow you to do your day-to-day activiSamir Vira, M.D. ties independently of the need of glasses or Cataract & Refractive contact lenses. LASIK and PRK (photorefracSurgeon tive keratectomy) are sophisticated outpatient procedures that will reshape the cornea, the clear window of the eye, to correct your prescription. It should give you the freedom to drive, read, and enjoy outdoor activities, such as golf, tennis, and swimming, with clear vision. Patient satisfaction after LASIK ranges from 96-99%, making it one of the most desirable elective procedures in the United States. Undoubtedly, LASIK has well-established and long-lasting benefits to patients. What about the cost of the procedure? The average national cost of LASIK was $2135 per eye in first half of 2017 with a range of $1000 to $4000 per eye. The cost usually includes the initial consultation, the procedure, and post-operative follow-up care. Refractive surgery practices have different pricing structures with some charging a single price that includes the most recent advancements in bladeless customized LASIK and others quoting varying prices, depending on the technology used and the amount of correction needed. While the older technology involves the use of a microkeratome blade to create a flap, the advent of the femtosecond laser allows for “bladeless” LASIK and has made the surgery more precise and safer. So that is a look at the immediate cost of LASIK. What about the long-term costs of NOT doing LASIK? This is something that many patients do NOT look at closely. The average individual spends hundreds of dollars on contact lenses and prescription glasses every year. Furthermore, an annual eye exam is needed and additional eyecare products, such as contact lens solutions, will be purchased. If you are an individual in your 20s to 30s, these costs can add up to over thousands of dollars over the span of years. Consideration should also be given to the costs of contact-lens related problems, such as dry eyes, corneal abrasions, and infections. These problems can become expensive due to additional clinic visits and necessary eye drops for treatment. Lastly, think about how much time you would save without the need for routine or emergency doctor’s appointments and daily contact lens care. Several online calculators from Johnson & Johnson (www. backinfocus.com/lasik-eye-procedure-cost.html) and the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society (www.refractivealliance.com/lasik-affordability-calculator/) have been created to help you determine your lifetime cost for glasses and contact lenses. As an example, an individual in his or her 30s will spend about $18,510 over his or her lifetime for reusable contact lenses. So while you may have thought of LASIK initially as a luxury, you should now think of it more like an investment. It is an investment designed to help you save money and the long-term burdens of contact lenses and prescription glasses. If the one-time cost with LASIK seems daunting, keep in mind that most refractive practices and surgeons provide financing options to break it down into smaller payments over time. Ultimately, LASIK should serve as an investment to provide you with freedom to read or watch TV without wearing glasses and to swim or shower without having to worry about your contact lenses.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. – For the first time, Forsyth County Parks and Recreation has received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies. Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Director Jim Pryor said the staff has been working toward the honor for two years. There are 151 standards in over 10 categories for agencies to achieve that show how a model department should do business, Pryor said. The commission looks for agencies that provide high quality services and experiences, along with providing assurance to the public that they’re meeting national standards of best practices. At the end of September, the department earned the distinction at the commission’s national conference. Forsyth County joins 165 agencies nationwide that are accredited. That includes 10 others in Georgia, including Alpharetta, Atlanta, Carrollton, Gaines-
ville, Roswell, Savannah, Woodstock, Clayton County, Columbus and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. “While Parks and Recreation will get most of the credit for this, it is truly a great honor for Forsyth County,” Pryor said. “Of the 151 standards, it touches almost every other department in the county. The partnership and service we have with them, along with the policies they have in place, help govern how we run.” Irby Brinson is the retired director of the Asheville, North Carolina, Parks and Recreation department, which was one of the first four programs to get accredited, and a member of the commission. “It’s a tremendous honor to do this,” Brinson said. “It’s a difficult process that takes a lot of time and energy, along with a commitment from other departments to be involved. They also have to continue to do their regular job, which they do an excellent job at.” During the process, Brinson visited some of the county’s park facilities. “I’m just in awe of what you have
here,” Brinson said. “The citizens should be very proud of what’s provided to them by the Board of Commissioners and through the department.” It’s not required for agencies to go through the accreditation, Brinson said, but rather an honor. “They’ve put the time and energy and put themselves out there to visitors across the country coming in and going through the standards one by one to determine if they meet them,” Brinson said. “It’s easy to say, ‘no,’ but to go through it is a tremendous accomplishment. Kudos to you for allowing that to happen.” The benefits of getting the honor are countless, Brinson said. “If you have a process where nothing is written down and you go through day in and day out with what has gone on in the past, without having the documentation and plans developed, you’re running by the seat of your pants,” Brinson said. “The accreditation forces agencies to put those things in writing. They become more efficient, effective and a better service to the community.”

Local Vietnam Veterans react to the “Vietnam” series Cumming Playhouse to show “Fiddler on the Roof” CUMMING, Ga. — The Cumming Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America recently reviewed the 10 episode, 18hour Ken Burns series entitled “Vietnam.” The series was the topic of open discussion at the chapter’s September meeting. Some found it too difficult to watch, but for most of those who viewed it, hearing the stories of the South Vietnamese people, the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army members provided a perspective that they had not heard before. The members said they were angered about the ineptitude of the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations in prosecuting the war and what the veterans viewed as the government’s dishonesty with the American people about the war. One common opinion expressed during the discussion was that the series tended to depict the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese soldiers in a more positive light than the American military who spent nearly two decades in Vietnam to help the people of South Vietnam to prevent a communist victory. “To me, for the guys who fought there and the guys that died, this series disrespected their memory,” said Chapter President Gary Ely. “I thought it was heavily skewed toward the anti-war movement,” said member David Dever. “I thought Ken Burns did a disservice to our veterans.” Another member, Jim Garner said he thought the series presented the American side in a poor light and the program, “opened up a lot of old wounds.” Perhaps one of the most interesting points of view came from Van Marosek of Lawrenceville, a Vietnamese refugee who along with her family was rescued by the American

military from Saigon as the city was about to fall to communist forces. “I just don’t believe that the Vietnam Veterans, my heroes, were presented in a respectful, proper and truthful manner,” Marosek said. “It is very difficult to watch history being misrepresented.” Irrespective of how television viewers assess the series, it clearly remains a defining moment for these veterans and a turning point in our history. One indisputable fact is that more than 58,000 Americans died and untold thousands still bear the scars of the Vietnam War.
CUMMING, Ga. — The popular Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” will be taking the Cumming Playhouse stage this fall. It will play on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sundays from Oct. 13 through Nov. 5. Set in Imperial Russia in the early 1900s, “Fiddler on the Roof” centers on Tevye, a Jewish father of five daughters, as he attempts to maintain his religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach on the family’s lives. Tevye must cope with the strong-willed actions of his three eldest daughters, all of whom wish to marry for love, with each prospective marriage moving further away from Jewish traditions. Tevye must also face growing aggressions against people of the Jewish faith enacted by the Russian tsar and carried out by military forces and their non-Jewish neighbors. Individual tickets to “Fiddler on the Roof” can be purchased at playhousecumming.com or by calling 770781-9178.

Meet Tim Perkins, director of Water and Sewer By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — For the past 22 years, Tim Perkins has helped the Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department grow. When he started in 1996, the value of the system was $35 million. Now the value of all the assets is over $612 million. The department has gone from an annual budget of $7 million to $90.7 million proposed for 2018. “I had the chance to grow up with the system and enjoyed building it,” Perkins said. He’s been with the county a total of nearly 30 years, as an assistant county engineer and assistant public works director for about seven years before transitioning into his current position in the mid-90s. He fell into the position when he was in public works when the county manager approached him asking if he’d be interested in the job. “They needed somebody who understood the county, people and policies,” Perkins said. “I didn’t have that much experience in water and sewer, but we were a very small system. It really

wasn’t that important to the county. I got lucky.” While he learned the ropes, he didn’t anticipate the way the system would swell. The county didn’t have any wastewater facilities when he started, but now it has seven plants and one drinking water plant. “We build a lot of stuff to keep up with the growth,” Perkins said. “We’ve

always known the growth was fast paced. We didn’t have the luxury of some other systems that have had to be a little more patient with their planning and growth. For now, we have over $100 million worth of projects under construction and about $330 million of construction to do in the next five years.” The department is set up as an enterprise, meaning the rate payers cover all costs, rather than being supported solely by taxes, he said. “I enjoy getting to serve the people and being able to help provide high quality drinking water and highly treated waste water facilities for environmental needs,” Perkins said. “It’s been very rewarding.” He credits the various boards of commissioners who were supportive of the department and willing to get new technology to help the department, including computer models that predict what trends the department will see. Being able to make an impact in environmental issues and weigh in on state government policies has also been something Perkins has appreciated. One of the biggest issues he’s faced is the tristate water wars that Geor-
gia has been a part of with Florida and Tennessee over which state gets to use the shared water. He said it’s hard sometimes because “water doesn’t know political ties.” Most of his senior staff has been working with him for more than 18 , and all have a mentality of helping the public. They’ve had to manage the influx of water customers that went from 1,500 customers in 1996 to the current 59,000. “The developers had to put up a lot of infrastructure, but we had to build the facilities and main truck lines,” Perkins said. “The very first sales tax program funded a lot of water lines. That’s what started a lot of the growth and expansion.” Water and its quality are essential for life, he said, so they are sensitive to protecting the environment and the water people drink. “We take comfort in that we’re putting out high quality and safe drinking water,” Perkins said. “We feel like we’re contributing to that and helping people. If I ever feel like I’m not providing a benefit or service, I’ll probably retire and go do something else.”

character’s marriage was not working out. Eventually, the character’s father showed him how to win back his wife’s heart and at the same time motivated Cameron. “It was a really inspiring movie,” Cameron said. “So many people loved it that we decided to expand the movie into a three-hour, live, interactive experience for people, called ‘Love Worth Fighting For.’ We teach the audience how to strengthen and fireproof their marriage.” The program revolves around discussing the everyday American couple and seeks to help reverse divorces and struggling marriages. Through comedic stories, life experiences, music and prayer, Cameron and Barfield reach out to single people, couples contemplating marriage, newlyweds and couples who have been married for years. “It’s a great time for couples to get away from the distractions of barking dogs, notifications on our phones and TV and just be together,” Cameron said. The actor looks back fondly on his days with “Growing Pains” and is still active in the acting industry by making documentaries and films, but it’s not where his primarily interest.

“I love to act but it’s not my first passion,” he said. “I would say teaching and helping people in a faith and family category would be more of a passion than acting and playing make believe.” Although the event has been running for nearly a decade, Cameron said there is always something new to talk about, work on daily and teach the audience. “Marriage never gets out of style or irrelevant,” Cameron said. “People are always looking for help. that are essential to a strong and healthy marriage.” Part of doing that is focusing on one’s faith, which the event includes. “Faith is at the heart and soul of it,” Cameron said. “With something as sacred as marriage, I believe a strong and healthy marriage has to have a spiritual component. There is a faith element that is critical to make your marriage blossom, flourish and work.” Faith plays a large part in Cameron’s own life in every way, he said. Growing up, he didn’t go to church and was an atheist. He became a bornagain Christian at 17. Now that he’s older, married for 26 years and the father to six children, he said he realized marriage and parenting comes with instructions. “I’m so thankful for that because we could all use some help with marriage and family,” Cameron said. “Life comes with instructions. My faith has helped as a moral compass, map and guide to help me navigate through life.” He hopes the event will give insight to people because often, unlike say, getting a driver’s license, marriage doesn’t require a test before you do it. “Something far more important and influential is the fact people are getting married and raising children and you don’t have to take any classes or pass a test to do that,” Cameron said. “Having something like ‘Love Worth Fighting For’ is an opportunity for people to get wisdom from those who’ve gone before them.” For more information about the “Love Worth Fighting For” tour or to order tickets, visit loveworthfightingfor. com.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The community came out Oct.3 to thank local law enforcement agencies and to learn about safety for children. The Target store on Peachtree Parkway hosted its annual National Night Out event to give families a chance to meet the agencies including the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Forsyth County Fire Department. Ania-Lee Swanepoel is the executive team leader for assets protection for the store and helped organize the event. “This is an opportunity for the community to come out and meet the local law enforcement and safety officials and thank them for all that they do for the community,” Swanepoel said. “This is for everyone to get to know their local neighbors.” Knowing what to do in emergencies and other safety tips are crucial for children to know, Swanepoel said.

Danish company names Roswell as North American headquarters Kamstrup to bring 52 jobs to Fulton By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — One overseas businesses has recently decided to call Roswell its home away from home, not just for the state of Georgia, but for the entirety of North America. The Georgia Department of Economic Development recently announced that the Danish company Kamstrup has selected Roswell as its new region headquarters, bringing 52 jobs to the area. “It’s incredibly significant to the strength and prestige of both the business community and the city as a whole,” said Roswell Inc’s Executive Director Steve Stroud. “Not only does this create new, high quality jobs in Roswell, but Kamstrup is also bringing with them a large investment of international equipment to this location. And we expect they will continue growing and expanding their operations here in the coming decade.” Kamstrup is an international company spread out across 24 countries that supplies electricity, district heating and water metering solutions. Founded in 1946, Kamstrup prides itself on measuring and managing both energy and water consumption worldwide. It is headquartered in Skanderborg, Denmark and employs over 1,200 people. It has 18 distributors in America. “By the rapidly growing sales in the USA and need for a production plant in North America, Atlanta and Fulton County was the natural choice,” said
Kamstrup CEO Lars Bo Kristensen. “We see an increasing need and interest for intelligent and accurate water metering solutions for the water utilities. But also, the individual consumer has an increased focus on the usage, as the cost for clean water increases year by year.” The move was facilitated along with Roswell Inc, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Danish Trade Commission in Atlanta, Metro Atlanta Chamber and Georgia Power. Roswell Inc got involved in the project in the beginning on 2017, when Kamstrup had a small office presence in Sandy Springs. When the company began to seek a larger office for a possible headquarters in the metro Atlanta area, Roswell Inc jumped on the opportunity to present Roswell as a top choice. According to Carisa Turner, Roswell Inc’s director of communications and public relations, Kamstrup chose the

city for several reasons, including its pool of talent, quality of life and the opportunity zone. The move has helped solidify relations between the state of Georgia and Denmark. “We are proud to have Kamstrup locate its North American headquarters
here in Roswell,” Stroud said. “This project is a great example of the impact strong collaboration by state, regional and local economic development agencies has in landing quality, innovative companies in our region. We are thrilled to have Kamstrup make its home in our city.”

Downtown Lawrenceville awash in new development Meeting with decision makers
Suburban downtown areas are flush with redevelopment these days as cities and developers rush to meet market demands of residents who want to be close to where some action is. Lawrenceville is the latest to double down on this idea. A couple years ago, or really any time in the history of the Atlanta metro area, I would have trumpeted what is going on in downtown Lawrenceville as epoch GEOFF SMITH development. But these days, what they Assurance Financial, are doing is keeping up with what’s gsmith@lendtheway.com going on in other cities like Alpharetta, Sugar Hill, Chamblee and Sandy Springs. All that said, there are at least three major projects going on in downtown Lawrenceville that will transform a city that already has seen significant downtown development. The projects include almost 40 acres of mixed-use development and a 2.2-mile linear park that will connect Georgia Gwinnett College with the Downtown District and open up development opportunities along the way. The biggest project being proposed is a 32-acre development behind the Lawrenceville Lawn Park and around City Hall that would include 600 residential units – 435 multifamily units and 159 single-family and townhouse units. Within that project would also be about 15,000 square feet of retail. Novare Group is the developer and is scheduled to present the project to the city in December, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Just across the Lawrenceville square and on 7.5 acres that used to be the site of the now demolished Lawrenceville High School (built in 1895), Richport Properties is proposing a $20 million mixed-use development. The project, being called City View, would include 58 single-family homes, townhomes, “cottages” and office space. According to the AJC, the developer is under a purchase-sale agreement with Lawrenceville’s Downtown Development Authority. The linear park is a significant project, mostly because of the opportunities it will create. This project has been in the planning stages for several years, and the city has recently hired Georgia Development Partners to run construction of the project, which is expected to begin next month, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. In addition to a new two-lane road, the project will include multi-use trails, bike paths, roundabouts and landscaping features. Multiple pocket parks and detention ponds are also shown in the plans – as are spaces for new townhomes, a restaurant, some retail space and a multi-level residential structure. One of the biggest things this corridor would do is connect the roughly 11,000 students enrolled at Georgia Gwinnett College with the downtown district and the two other
A rendering of a planned 32-acre mixed-use development that will include 435 multifamily units, 159 single-family and townhouse units, and 15,000 square feet of retail, all in downtown Lawrenceville. projects mentioned earlier. The corridor will also fold in an existing brewery named Slow Pour Brewing Company and 550 Trackside, a popular event facility housed in the city’s old train station. It should take about a year to demolish some of the buildings in the corridor to make way for the new road and trails. At that point, construction on the new infrastructure is said to begin. I imagine that retail businesses in downtown Lawrenceville are chomping at the bit to see these projects completed. With almost 660-residential units going in, they will see a significant increase in night-time and weekend customers. And with the office development and the connection to Georgia Gwinnett College, they will see a significant increase in daytime customers during the week. It will be a good time to be doing business in Lawrenceville for sure. Geoff Smith is a mortgage banker with Assurance Financial focusing on residential home loans for refinances and home purchases. How are you getting access to decision makers to sell your product or service? Is it taking you a long time to meet with someone who can give you a purchase order? Have you spent countless DICK JONES hours talking with Founder & President people who have Jones Simply Sales no authority to buy from you? Meeting with decision makers quickly is an important component to not only winning more business, but also getting business quicker. Depending on your customer profile, you may have immediate access to decision makers. For example, if you are selling to consumers who visit your place of business, you literally are talking with the buyer. That’s the easiest access you’ll get. However, if you’re selling in a business-to-business environment, you’ll often have to navigate from lower positions in the organization until you reach someone who can make a decision. A study conducted by the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler business school concluded that the easiest way to gain access to decision makers is to have someone who reports to them bring you there. In other words, if you can convince a direct reporter of a decision maker that it’s in their best interest to introduce you to their boss, you’ll be quickly talking to a decision maker. When plotting your course to gain access to decision makers, study the company’s organization chart. It’s far easier to gain access to lower level resources, show them what value you’ll provide, and have them take you to the decision maker. And when you’re meeting with the decision maker, you’ll be getting more business!

Jordan Orthodontics Thanks You! By Dr. Jeff Jordan Wow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years. We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last four years! You don’t win
many awards after high school, so it is a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 21,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. We can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. Congratulations Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta! Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your practice? Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road. And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued. How did you react to the news of winning both these titles? To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm. As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment? After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists. I feel so fortunate to be able to address
both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service. You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – what is it? And what TAYLOR does “MOHS” stand for? Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers. As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor. Is there anything else that you would like to share? I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. They care and it shows! And I am so grateful! So, to our team at Premier Dermatology, thank you for the fantastic job that you do every day! Thank you Dr. Taylor, and Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta.

Rejuvenate yourself before Johns Creek Dermatology the holidays with our cosmetic services - Just for you! By Dr. Ushma Patel, D.M.D and Dr. Brittany Corbett, D.D.S Center For Advanced Dentistry
At Johns Creek Dermatology, we are a complete practice, treating both adult and pediatric patients, offering cutting edge surgical treatment options in office. Incorporating surgical procedures into our daily practice allows us to provide the most comprehensive care to our patients. Mohs surgery, a technique for removing skin cancers, and the most recent and exciting addition to our practice, is the optimal treatment for many basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, including those in cosmetically and functionally important areas around the eyes, face, scalp, fingers, etc. Mohs is also recommended for carcinomas that are large, aggressive or growing rapidly or have recurred after previous treatment. The procedure is done in stages, all in one visit, while the patient waits between each stage. After removing a layer of tissue, the surgeon examines it under a microscope in an on-site lab. If any cancer cells remain, the surgeon knows the exact area where they are and removes another layer of tissue from that precise location, while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. The doctor repeats this process until no cancer cells remain. Dr. Shereen Timani is committed to providing exemplary care for her patients, incorporating her double Board Certifications & 17 years of expertise in Dermatology and Dermatopathology, and is excited to offer the gold standard in treatment for skin cancer. SOUTH FORSYTH 38, LAMBERT 0
South Forsyth earns monumental win over rivals Lambert By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The foundations of a rivalry game can be built upon many aspects. Some rivalries are due to the close proximity of two schools. Some are born out of a history of hard-fought, close games. Others are continued by their fans’ “love-to-hate” attitude toward the other program. And some rivalry games seem to always have huge implications for each team’s season. For Lambert and South Forsyth, the rivalry is founded in all those reasons. And perhaps the most prevalent the last few years is the how crucial a victory is in the series. In 2015, the two teams met up in the de-facto Region 6-AAAAAA championship game in the final week of the regular season. South captured a 31-6
win and the region title. Last season, Lambert was on the winning end of a 28-20 contest. The Longhorns and South finished region play at 4-1, but Lambert held the tiebreaker for the region championship with their win over the War Eagles. This year didn’t produce a close game, but proved to be a massive, 38-0 win for South Forsyth. “It was a great win for our program,” South head coach Jeff Arnette said. “We played well in all three phases of the game and the kids played hard.” Arnette gave credit to his offensive and defensive coaches for their game plans, and said his team was well prepared for their region opening game.
“The focus during the week was awesome,” he said. “They were as prepared as we’ve been for a long time.” South Forsyth’s defense played “fast and confident” and managed to stop Lambert’s rushing attack, holding the Longhorns to under 200 yards of total offense. Lambert’s shutout loss was its first since 2011. South’s offense scored more than 30 points for the fifth consecutive game, thanks to over 250 yards passing from Cal Morris and success in the running game. Arnette said his team passed more in the early going to open Lambert’s stacked defensive box. “Our offensive line blocked well
for the run game and had great pass protection,” Arnette said. “If you’re offensive line is playing as well as ours is right now, you’re going to have success on offense.” The War Eagles are confident after their dominating win over the Longhorns, not to mention starting the season undefeated through six games. But Arnette knows there is much work still left to be done. “Being 6-0 is great, but winning the region championship was our focus going in to this season,” he said. “We have a lot of work ahead of us.” That starts this week as South takes on Milton (5-1, 1-0) who are thriving under first-year head coach Adam Clack. “Milton is a great football team,” Arnette said. “They are picked to win the region right now. We’ll go back on Monday and get better.”

South shuts out Lambert, West falls to Milton By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com
Class 7A Milton 17, West Forsyth 14 — Milton head coach Adam Clack got a win over his former school when the Eagles outlasted West Forsyth in a region thriller Friday night. Milton took a 17-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter on a Hayden Hairston 23-yard field goal. West Forsyth then drove 69 yards on eight plays but faced a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line. West quarterback Zachary Burns rolled to his right but passed left to a waiting Garrett Woodall. Woodall came down with the reception, but was tackled mere inches from the goal line, forcing a turnover on downs. Milton took over, rushed for a first down and then ran out the clock in victory formation. Roswell 36, Lassiter 30 (OT) — Roswell captured its 15th straight region victory by outlasting Lassiter Friday night. Both of Roswell’s wins this season have come in overtime. The Hornets opened a 23-0 lead in the first half, but Lassiter fought back to tie the game at 30-30 late in the fourth. Lassiter looked poised to capture the win by recovering a blocked punt at Roswell’s 15-yard line with under 20 seconds remaining. However, their field goal attempt was missed. Lassiter opened overtime on offense but again failed to make a field goal. Roswell’s Kamonty Jett secured the win with a touchdown rush for the Hornets. Roswell rushed for nearly 400 yards in the win. North Forsyth 58, Forsyth Central 0 — North Forsyth put on another offensive display Friday night, blasting Forsyth Central to open Region 5-AAAAAA play with a win. The Raiders got five touchdowns from Bryson Trigg in the first half and led 41-0 at the break. North’s defense held the Bulldogs to under 100 total yards of offense and forced five turnovers.
Class 6A Chattahoochee 38, Johns Creek 31 — Chattahoochee ended their twogame skid against Johns Creek and improved to 4-1 in region play with a close win over the Gladiators Friday night. Hooch led 22-17 after a back and
forth first half, but Johns Creek would take the lead on a 28-yard pass from Zach Gibson to Zach Williams. Hooch responded with a 4-yard touchdown rush from Andrew Thomas on its ensuing drive. But Johns Creek was back on top just over a minute later when Gibson connected with Nate Hope for a 68-yard touchdown to put Johns Creek on top, 31-30. Chattahoochee reclaimed the lead early in the fourth with a passing score from Jack Corrigan to Marcus Stephen. Johns Creek had a drive to potentially force overtime late in the fourth, but a turnover on downs allowed Hooch to secure the win. Alpharetta 37, Pope 14 — Alpharetta got off to a slow start but put up 30 unanswered points against Pope to remain perfect in Region 7-AAAAAA. Matthew Downing threw three touchdowns passes, and Nolan Edmonds scored on rushes of 53 and 9 yards in the win. Alpharetta’s defense forced two turnovers and held Pope to one score after their game-opening drive. Cambridge 38, Dunwoody 16 — After starting the season 0-5, Cambridge has now put together a win streak after their lopsided victory over Dunwoody Friday night. Cambridge jumped out to a 21-3 lead with scores from Matt McCree and two touchdown throws from Hogan Dykes. The Bears’ Ty Wald and McCree scored in the second half with Victor Valentine adding a field goal. Cambridge’s 38 points was its highest total of the season. Centennial 48, Northview 17 — Centennial’s Max Brosmer had another standout performance for the Knights in their fourth-straight region win. Brosmer went 13-18 passing for 320 yards with three touchdowns and added 29 yards rushing. The Knights’ Emeka Nwanze rushed for 103 yards. Northview took an early 7-0 lead, but Centennial scored 20 unanswered points and led 27-10 at the half. Two big plays from Centennial — a 60-yard touchdown pass to Cal Dickie and 80-yard scoring rush from Nwanze — allowed the Knights to cruise to the win in the fourth quarter.

Blessed Trinity 50, White Co. 14 — Blessed Trinity used a strong second half to improve to 5-0 all-time in Region 7-AAAA. Early turnovers from both teams resulted in plenty of scoring in the first half, but BT would be the only team to find the scoreboard in the second. BT rushed for 245 yards in the win and recovered three White County fumbles.
Class A-Private Whitefield Academy 31, Fellowship Christian 24 — Fellowship’s loss to Whitefield Friday night wasn’t as devastating as their last-second loss to Walker last week, but it was another distressing outcome that came late in the game. Fellowship led 24-10 early in the fourth quarter, but Whitefield cut the lead to a single score with a 70-yard touchdown pass just a few minutes later. Whitefield then recovered an onside kick and later scored to tie the game at 24-24. On Fellowship’s ensuing drive, a holding call negated a long touchdown pass and the Paladins were eventually forced to punt. With six minutes remaining, Whitefield got another long scoring play, a

40-yard rush, to take the lead and hold on for the win. Fellowship’s two straight region losses are its first since 2014. Mount Pisgah 49, St. Francis 27 — Mount Pisgah scored over 45 points for the fourth consecutive game and remained unbeaten in region play with a win over St. Francis Friday night. St. Francis scored a touchdown on their opening possession for the second straight game, but Mount Pisgah put up 21 unanswered points to regain the lead for good. St. Francis trailed by 2820 early in the third, but Pisgah scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter and hung on for the win. Patriots’ quarterback Jacob Cendoya had four total touchdowns in the win and Kai Williams rushed for two scores. King’s Ridge 14, Pinecrest Academy 7 — King’s Ridge snapped a four-game losing streak and earned their first win over Pinecrest since 2013 Friday night. The Tigers trailed early after Micky Mangan connected with Michael Birozes for a 90-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. Pinecrest held their slim 7-0 lead until late in the first half. The Tigers would tie the game with a touchdown reception from Hayden Milling in the final minute of the second quarter. In the low-scoring affair, the final score of the game came from Tigers’ quarterback Casey Flanigan who rushed in from 1 yard out in the third quarter.

Whether producing an outstanding event or volunteering as a professional the returning soldiers deserve our help.”
There is a current need for volunteer professionals to assist with the following: • Mock Interviews: Help a veteran or military spouse to successfully prepare for job interviews. You will conduct a mock phone interview asking typical interview questions, as if you were conducting a real interview, and then provide honest and friendly feedback about what they did well and opportunities for improvement. • Career Counseling: Speak with job-seeking veterans and military spouses about specific needs or interests related to their job search. The conversation could include topics such as networking strategies, knowledge sharing specific to an industry or position, or general career planning. • Guiding Federal Sector Applicants: Speak with veterans and military spouses who are interested in working for the federal government. You could provide advice on the USA Jobs portal, what a federal resume should look like, interviewing for a federal position and/or any general tips for federal applications. • Photography: There is a need for volunteer photographers to take professional headshot photos of veterans and military spouses at Hire Heroes USA Employment Workshops. Photographers can also help by attending any of our events and taking photos. • Outreach: Support our Transition Specialists by conducting follow-up with veterans and military spouses to learn how they are doing in their job search process. Volunteers must agree to a background check for this opportunity and will receive additional training on documentation procedures. • Social Networking: follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram. • Professionals are especially needed in these industries: Federal Sector, Security/Law Enforcement, IT (hardware & software), Cybersecurity, Human Resources, Emergency Management Operations, Logistics, Intelligence, Project Management, Consulting, Film/TV, Nursing.
Retired Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, New York Times best-selling author, brings his unique and captivating style to the keynote for this major fundraising event. “To have Jocko Willink join us for this event at The Metropolitan Club is not only an honor for our organization, but an opportunity for the local community to meet and learn from a great military warrior.” These programs are funded exclusively by private grants and public donations. Lambert students win again at Chalk Walk competition By CARTER VOORHEES carter@appenmediagroup.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Lambert High School returned home with yet another victory from the sixth annual Chalk Walk competition by Art Sandy Springs. Students brought home trophies for first, second and third place in the art competition. The students’ art is judged by a panel made up professional artists who grade it in several categories, including the use of color, originality, composition and technical execution. Lambert High School has been involved in this event for the past six years and was one of the original competitors when the competition first started. Lambert art teacher and National Art Honor Society sponsor Ashley Young said they the event has become a tradition, and they plan to participate for as long as the competition is held. “Every student in the National Art Honor Society looks forward to the event,” Young said. “Students who are new to our NAHS chapter see past work and are eager to try it themselves.” Though they have won every year, the students are surprised every time they win. Chalk is a unique and difficult medium, yet each student is intrigued and ready to use it. The kids are encouraged to go outside of their comfort zone, according to Young. First place winner and junior Rina Yoo was originally inspired by previous participants to enter. She plans to participate next year because the competition was a “real bonding experience” and she made several new relationships with her schoolmates and other artists as well. “It reminded me of my childhood and makes me feel like a kid again,” said junior Daniel Sakamoto, the second-place winner. The event allows kids to create

beautiful pieces inspired from things like their heritage. Sakamoto was inspired by his Japanese heritage. From the event, students create new friendships, are inspired by others’ artwork and develop the ability to adapt to a difficult medium. The success and enjoyment within the competition is what keeps each student wanting to come back each year. After seeing the impact and excitement that comes with the competition, Young said she wants to start a chalk competition in Forysth County to start a new tradition for all the area schools.
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — South Forsyth Middle School was recently recognized as the world’s largest Future Health Professionals club. The organization, formally known as the Health Occupations of America, is for students that are interested in a career in the Healthcare field. South Forsyth Middle School started the Future Health Professionals club in 2014 with 77 mem-bers. When they were nationally affiliated in 2016, they grew to 165 members last year and 180 members this past year. They have been recognized and designated as the Largest Middle School Chapter in the world these past two years. “Once these students realized the opportunity they had at the middle school level they wanted to be a part of the chapter,” said Julie Smith, Future Health Professionals advisor. “Students saw their chance to participate in community service as well as serve as a competitor in the competitive events part of HOSA.” Terri Morrison, student president of the South Forsyth chapter, got involved with HOSA two years ago, when she was in the sixth grade. “By being a part of HOSA and being the president, I believe I am giving people who join a chance at starting
their future at an earlier age,” she said. There are 10 events offered at the middle school level where students have the chance to partici-pate at the Regional, State, and National level if they qualify. This past June, Smith took 25 stu-dents to the International Leadership Conference in Orlando. She had students that placed first, second and third in the events and all of her students placed in the top 10. Their national service project is in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness. They will be doing a Color Run in the spring to promote awareness and raise money for this or-ganization. They also carry out monthly service projects, collect board games for kids in Appala-chia for Christmas and will be making Christmas cards for the children in Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “Students also love to be a part of something. Many of these students already know that they want to be in the healthcare field. The opportunity that is presented at this level only benefits them more when they begin high school,” Smith said. This organization has given students the opportunity to make many friends while making an im-pact in their community. “My favorite part of HOSA is ability to create new friendships and bond with new people,” Mor-rison said.
