Woman bilked out of $3,100 JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman answering an online popup ad lost $3,100, but she later was able to help police in St. Louis find a suspect who admitted to the swindle. The woman said that on Sept. 22, she was surfing the internet when she saw an advertisement pop up asking if she wanted to make extra money. She clicked on the link and provided her personal information. The next day, a package arrived in the mail with instructions to cash the enclosed $3,100 check, use the money to buy five $520 money orders and send them to an address in St. Louis. If she followed the directions, the letter said she would be compensated $3,100. After she performed the task, the woman received an alert from her bank telling her that the cashed check was fake. She then contacted police in the area of the provided address to inform

Is LASIK Affordable for me? By Samir Vira, M.D.

Individuals with glasses and contact lenses are often steered away from LASIK or refractive surgery due to concern for its high cost. Many think of it as a luxury such as a cruise vacation or an expensive watch. But when you sit down and analyze the actual cost and benefits of LASIK, you may be surprised to find out that it is more affordable than you expected. The goal of LASIK and refractive surgery is to allow you to do your day-to-day activiSamir Vira, M.D. ties independently of the need of glasses or Cataract & Refractive contact lenses. LASIK and PRK (photorefracSurgeon tive keratectomy) are sophisticated outpatient procedures that will reshape the cornea, the clear window of the eye, to correct your prescription. It should give you the freedom to drive, read, and enjoy outdoor activities, such as golf, tennis, and swimming, with clear vision. Patient satisfaction after LASIK ranges from 96-99%, making it one of the most desirable elective procedures in the United States. Undoubtedly, LASIK has well-established and long-lasting benefits to patients. What about the cost of the procedure? The average national cost of LASIK was $2135 per eye in first half of 2017 with a range of $1000 to $4000 per eye. The cost usually includes the initial consultation, the procedure, and post-operative follow-up care. Refractive surgery practices have different pricing structures with some charging a single price that includes the most recent advancements in bladeless customized LASIK and others quoting varying prices, depending on the technology used and the amount of correction needed. While the older technology involves the use of a microkeratome blade to create a flap, the advent of the femtosecond laser allows for “bladeless” LASIK and has made the surgery more precise and safer. So that is a look at the immediate cost of LASIK. What about the long-term costs of NOT doing LASIK? This is something that many patients do NOT look at closely. The average individual spends hundreds of dollars on contact lenses and prescription glasses every year. Furthermore, an annual eye exam is needed and additional eyecare products, such as contact lens solutions, will be purchased. If you are an individual in your 20s to 30s, these costs can add up to over thousands of dollars over the span of years. Consideration should also be given to the costs of contact-lens related problems, such as dry eyes, corneal abrasions, and infections. These problems can become expensive due to additional clinic visits and necessary eye drops for treatment. Lastly, think about how much time you would save without the need for routine or emergency doctor’s appointments and daily contact lens care. Several online calculators from Johnson & Johnson (www. backinfocus.com/lasik-eye-procedure-cost.html) and the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society (www.refractivealliance.com/lasik-affordability-calculator/) have been created to help you determine your lifetime cost for glasses and contact lenses. As an example, an individual in his or her 30s will spend about $18,510 over his or her lifetime for reusable contact lenses. So while you may have thought of LASIK initially as a luxury, you should now think of it more like an investment. It is an investment designed to help you save money and the long-term burdens of contact lenses and prescription glasses. If the one-time cost with LASIK seems daunting, keep in mind that most refractive practices and surgeons provide financing options to break it down into smaller payments over time. Ultimately, LASIK should serve as an investment to provide you with freedom to read or watch TV without wearing glasses and to swim or shower without having to worry about your contact lenses.

Johns Creek mayor candidate profiles Bodker seeks ‘last term’ as Johns Creek mayor

Marchetti vows to put ‘residents first’

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Mayor Mike Bodker says this will be his last political race, win or lose, but he still has unfinished business regarding traffic and preserving the city’s residential character.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Alex Marchetti is jumping into the mayor’s race with no political experience, but he says he will rely on his business acumen to lead the city in a new direction. His major plank will be “putting residents first,” something he says the city has failed to do.

Age: 52 BODKER Family: Wife – Lisa, Children – Keri, Jake and Emma Education: BBA in Accounting from University of Georgia Occupation: Consultant What are your reasons for entering this race? I would like to use what would be my last term as mayor to focus on protecting our premier residential character while partnering with our community to thoughtfully design our TSPLOST (roads projects) and parks bond projects. Equally important is the eventual completion of our Comprehensive Plan. Finally, I want to ensure that our city continues the sound fiscal footing that we have begun. Under my leadership as mayor, Johns Creek became only one of 199 cities in the United States – out of 20,000 – with a triple-A bond rating. I’ll continue implementing conservative fiscal policies. What qualifications, experience or skills make you the best choice for this seat? Your chief elected officer needs to be experienced. This is a tough job requiring leadership, executive management and financial management skills. It also requires strong relationships with civic, business and elected leaders. I have cultivated the proper experience and relationships to continue delivering real results for our citizens. I have had my hand on the wheel of Johns Creek since before its creation, and today our city is widely recognized as the premier residential community in Georgia, as well as the safest city in the state. Real results require real leadership.

MARCHETTI

Age: 67 Family: Wife, Robin, daughter and two grandchildren Education: MBA – Keller Graduate School, BA – University of Illinois, financial licenses, QMS Auditor Occupation: Business executive What are your reasons for entering this race? I have been a Johns Creek resident long before its formation nearly 11 years ago. I celebrated our independence from Fulton County. I was inspired by the city and the sense of solidarity and passion our residents had to build a community for families, friends and businesses. We supported elected officials, handing them the authority to plan and develop an exceptional place for us to live in harmony and enjoy the wonderfully diverse community cultures. It is clear that our leader has mismanaged traffic, high-density development, contract administration and taken us down a road without vision, leading nowhere. Yesterday, it was to be a Buckhead, today it is maybe Suwanee, maybe Duluth. Eleven years without clear vision has left residents frustrated and asking for a mayor who can get us back on course. I will restore a “Residents First” policy for the citizens and fulfill our original vision. What qualifications, experience or skills make you the best choice for this seat? I am not a career politician but a successful businessman focused on creating and providing customers with the

Johns Creek Post 5 candidate profiles Endres seeking second council term

Jackson seeks traffic solutions

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Councilwoman Stephanie Endres is seeking re-election to implement the TSPLOST for roads in such a way it will ease traffic congestion. Meanwhile the city needs to guard against more density, she said.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Chris Jackson wants to work with the surrounding communities to solve the problem of traffic gridlock because it is the one issue that directly affects so many others in the city. JACKSON He says he has been involved in his community wherever he has lived.

ENDRES

Age: 49 Family: Mark, husband of 25 years, children Matthew (19), Josephine (10) and Amanda (8) Education: Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Florida State University and Certified Public Accountant Occupation: Corporate Controller healthcare industry What are your reasons for entering this race? I ran two years ago for Post 5 because of a lack of transparency, communication and involvement with residents and a lack of fiscal management at the council level. In the last 18 months, residents are now being proactively communicated with through NextDoor.com, Facebook.com, mailings, town hall meetings and individual subdivision meetings. Financial decisions involve discussions regarding fair market value of services, contract terms and appropriate taxation levels. I am running for one full four-year term to solidify these efforts through implementation of tools and controls to sustain the city for decades to come. What qualifications, experience or skills make you the best choice for this seat? Two years ago I made commitments as I campaigned to reduce taxes, protect our residential bedroom community through supporting the existing Comprehensive Land Use Plan and by ensuring the government is a government of the people, for the people and by the people. I fulfilled all these commitments by: • Reducing the millage rate in 2016, reducing expenditures by over $1

Age: 50 Family: Wife, Erin, step-daughter Caity, step-daughter Maddie, daughter, Alexandra, sons Tyler and Matthew Education: BSBA – Western Carolina University, EMBA Studies – University of Michigan Occupation: Business owner - Apical Resource Group What are your reasons for entering this race? This city is at an important maturation point, and these next four years are critical to our growth. We face traffic issues that are monumental. We have to find a way to grow responsibly. We must protect our parks and greenspaces while developing new parks that meet the community’s needs. Lastly, we must retain our current businesses and employers while recruiting new employers in order to help reduce the tax burden of homeowners. These are just some of the challenges that are ahead, and it will take the right leaders who have a passion for our city. I believe that I have the ability and experience to help solve these issues. What qualifications, experience or skills make you the best choice for this seat? I have served the communities that I have lived in, in the following capacities: • Former Chairman of the AMMS SGC • Current co-chairman of the JCHS SGC • Former chairman of the Park and Rec Advisory Council (Woodstock) • Former chairman of the Park and Rec Commission (Charlotte/Meck-

I heard my wife’s news alert go off about 2 a.m. to say a gunman had killed at least two people in Las Vegas. I barely shrugged and turned over to go back to sleep. When I turned HATCHER HURD on the TV that Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com morning, it was more than 20 dead, and by the time I got to work it was more than 40 murdered. Of course the news feeds kept up the running score and filled in the sketchy details about a lone wolf shooter. There were precious few details, but there seemed to be an endless loop of the staccato gunshots pouring down on the crowd of helpless concert-goers. I suppose it was in the evening of that first day that I heard the first politician say that it was “too early” to talk about gun control measures. That is what “they” always say after another senseless gun tragedy. That is what they said after 32 were shot and killed April 16, 2007, on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. That is what they said after 13 were shot down April 3, 2009, in Binghamton, New York. That is what they said after 13 were shot and killed Nov. 5, 2009, at Fort Hood, Texas. That is what they said after 12 died July 20, 2012, at an Aurora, Colorado theater. That is what they said after 27 died Dec. 14, 2014, in the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut. That is what they said after 12 were shot dead Sept. 16, 2013, at the Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. That is what they said after 9

Bodker: Continued from Page 4 What do you see as the most important issue before the city to solve first? I will continue to work on traffic relief and improving our roads, while protecting our city’s residential character. Traffic is a metro Atlanta-wide problem, and is not unique to Johns Creek. As mayor, I led the effort to successfully repave 95 miles of neighborhood roads and 60 miles of main roads. I also led the effort to create 41 new miles of improved connectivity with new sidewalks and trails. Surrounding communities like

That is what they said after 14 coworkers were executed Dec. 2, 2015, in San Bernardino, California. That is what they said after 49 people were shot June 12, 2016, in the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. “Soon” is apparently a term that also means “Go away. I’m not going to discuss it.” Meanwhile, the media cannot seem to shut up about the Las Vegas massacre. There hasn’t been a nickel’s worth of real information since the second day of the shooting. We know who did it. We don’t know why he did it. And it is a quite low probability that we will ever discover a motive for this. But that does not stop the media from milking every last ounce from it. It is sickening to see a week after this tragedy they still open with photos and film clips of people fleeing in the terror of that night and having victims relive the last moments of loved ones. And still they play the rat-a-tat-tat of the sniper’s firing. Enough. It has passed the point of reportage and into the realm of simple exploitation. Quit feeding the beast and move on. Alpharetta, Roswell, Duluth and South Forsyth continue to add significant development, and this brings traffic to Johns Creek. I will continue to make decisions that control the traffic within Johns Creek while continuing to work on the problem caused by those outside of Johns Creek. I will continue to lead to ensure that the transportation funding approved by the voters of Johns Creek last November is invested wisely on road projects that have a direct impact on traffic reduction. Too often people who run for political office make grandiose claims without any real experience or previous effort. The reality is that real results require real leadership.

Fulton’s graduation rate highest among area’s large school systems Rate still falls below strategic goal of 90% By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – The graduation rate for Fulton County Schools continues its upward trend, with the Class of 2017 posting a graduation rate of nearly 87 percent. While that figure is the highest graduation rate among large systems in metro Atlanta, it still falls short of Fulton’s five-year strategic goal to reach a 90 percent graduation rate by 2017. “While the district did not reach the 90 percent goal for all schools, overall we experienced extraordinary progress in all areas of the county. Over five years, the district’s graduation rate increased more than 11 percent – from 75.5 percent to 86.8 percent – and in North Fulton, nearly every high school improved and exceeded the 90 percent goal,” said Susan Hale, spokesperson for Fulton Schools. Of the system’s 19 high schools, 12 reached the 90 percent goal, including all eight traditional high schools in North Fulton. Cambridge and Chattahoochee high schools posted the system’s highest graduation rates of just over 98 percent for the Class of 2017. Following close behind were Northview (96.8) and Johns Creek (96.5) high schools. Statewide, the push to increase Georgia’s previously lackluster graduation rates seems to be working. In the past five years, statewide rates have gone from just under 70 percent to nearly 81 percent this year, the first time in Georgia’s history that graduation rates have exceeded 80 percent.

“It’s wonderful to see Georgia’s graduation rate continue to rise because we’re not just talking about data points,” said State School Superintendent Richard Woods. “We’re talking about individual students who are moving on, ready and prepared, to their next phase of life.” He noted the push toward personalizing education for each student, and moving away from a standard approach, has been the key to keeping students motivated and in school. In Fulton, the move to personalized learning has long been a focus of the curriculum, with students being allowed to move ahead to more challenging courses when ready, and additional support available for those less prepared. System officials said they are also aware that not every student takes the same path after high school graduation. “We continue to be immensely proud of our schools in everything they do to help students cross the finish line,” said Fulton Schools Superintendent Jeff Rose. “Our goal is every student will complete high school and earn a diploma so they can be prepared for post-secondary success, as a college student, a skilled member of the workforce or a member of the armed forces.” This is the seventh year Georgia school systems have calculated the graduation rate using the standard now required by the U.S. Department of Education. The formula now begins tracking each student when they first enter high school as a freshman, and whether they graduate within four years. In the past, graduation rates included students who took more than four years to graduate, and did not account for transfers and dropouts.

What do you see as the most important issue before the city to solve first? The important issue facing Johns Creek is traffic congestion. North Fulton County supported TSPLOST as a funding mechanism for road improvements, and now Johns Creek is faced with effectively and efficiently implementing well planned road improvement projects. Even though the projects were identified in the referendum, the City Council must also consider traffic impacts of the changes to be made to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan as well as the impact to the storm water system. Any changes to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan to increase density will impact traffic congestion planning occurring now as well as increase water run-off through the construction of more impervious surfaces.

The Metropolitan Club to host American Patriots Gala November 3rd. Hire Heroes USA, a nonprofit organization providing employment services to transitioning U.S. military members, veterans and military spouses across the United States and around the world, is hosting its American Patriots Gala sponsored by The Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Friday, November 3, 2017. Hire Heroes USA, a Guidestar Platinum nonprofit, was recently honored with Charity Navigator’s highest possible 4-star rating for a third consecutive year. It is a top employment resource and the leading veteran service organization specifically targeting the issues of unemployment and under employment among veterans. The organization’s numbers speak volumes. To date, Hire Heroes USA has helped more than 19,000 veterans and military spouses find meaningful careers in the civilian workforce, generating an estimated economic impact of more than $225 million. Hire Heroes USA was originally founded 10 years ago by an area Johns creek resident, John Bardis, to address concerns for unemployed veterans. Today, the national nonprofit provides clients with services for resume assistance, career coaching, practice interviews and job matching. Hire Heroes USA also continues to partner with a wide range of respected employers from small businesses to the Fortune 100 companies. The American Patriots Gala sponsored The Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Friday, November 3, 2017 will include an elaborate dinner and cocktails with a keynote presentation. When asked why she felt it important to sponsor the gala Lee with The Metropolitan Club said, “Reintegrating returning veterans into successful citizens is the work every single person in the community. Whether producing an outstanding event or volunteering as a professional the returning soldiers deserve our help.”

There is a current need for volunteer professionals to assist with the following: • Mock Interviews: Help a veteran or military spouse to successfully prepare for job interviews. You will conduct a mock phone interview asking typical interview questions, as if you were conducting a real interview, and then provide honest and friendly feedback about what they did well and opportunities for improvement. • Career Counseling: Speak with job-seeking veterans and military spouses about specific needs or interests related to their job search. The conversation could include topics such as networking strategies, knowledge sharing specific to an industry or position, or general career planning. • Guiding Federal Sector Applicants: Speak with veterans and military spouses who are interested in working for the federal government. You could provide advice on the USA Jobs portal, what a federal resume should look like, interviewing for a federal position and/or any general tips for federal applications. • Photography: There is a need for volunteer photographers to take professional headshot photos of veterans and military spouses at Hire Heroes USA Employment Workshops. Photographers can also help by attending any of our events and taking photos. • Outreach: Support our Transition Specialists by conducting follow-up with veterans and military spouses to learn how they are doing in their job search process. Volunteers must agree to a background check for this opportunity and will receive additional training on documentation procedures. • Social Networking: follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram. • Professionals are especially needed in these industries: Federal Sector, Security/Law Enforcement, IT (hardware & software), Cybersecurity, Human Resources, Emergency Management Operations, Logistics, Intelligence, Project Management, Consulting, Film/TV, Nursing.

Retired Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, New York Times best-selling author, brings his unique and captivating style to the keynote for this major fundraising event. “To have Jocko Willink join us for this event at The Metropolitan Club is not only an honor for our organization, but an opportunity for the local community to meet and learn from a great military warrior.” These programs are funded exclusively by private grants and public donations. Please join the community in supporting this worthwhile project on November 3rd.

Seeing artists as they see themselves By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Johns Creek Arts Center Program Director/Curator Althea Harris has brought together some interesting art shows, but her latest one, “Now You See Me: Contemporary Self-Portraiture,” asks a lot from the contributing artists. Harris is a conjurer, getting the artists to submit self-portraits so that we in some way we can peek into the artists’ souls. “I wanted to see what sorts of art they would produce, and it is certainly as diverse and individualistic as I could have hoped for,” said Harris. Indeed, the artists worked in a range of media, including oil and canvas, photography, acrylic, pottery and more. Arts Center board member Kathy Ortwerth said the submissions just “fill the rooms with energy.” “The works are so obviously per-

Harris said this is a “fun” exhibition. “Of all the shows we have done, I have enjoyed this one the most,” she said. “I really got to know all of the artists.”

Harris also noted the Arts Center is casting a wider net, pulling in more artists from the Atlanta area. “I am pleased we drew younger artists from the University of Georgia and the Savannah College of Art & Design.” She said the organization is beginning to spread its wings.

Danish company names Roswell as North American headquarters Kamstrup to bring 52 jobs to Fulton By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — One overseas businesses has recently decided to call Roswell its home away from home, not just for the state of Georgia, but for the entirety of North America. The Georgia Department of Economic Development recently announced that the Danish company Kamstrup has selected Roswell as its new region headquarters, bringing 52 jobs to the area. “It’s incredibly significant to the strength and prestige of both the business community and the city as a whole,” said Roswell Inc’s Executive Director Steve Stroud. “Not only does this create new, high quality jobs in Roswell, but Kamstrup is also bringing with them a large investment of international equipment to this location. And we expect they will continue growing and expanding their operations here in the coming decade.” Kamstrup is an international company spread out across 24 countries that supplies electricity, district heating and water metering solutions. Founded in 1946, Kamstrup prides itself on measuring and managing both energy and water consumption worldwide. It is headquartered in Skanderborg, Denmark and employs over 1,200 people. It has 18 distributors in America. “By the rapidly growing sales in the USA and need for a production plant in North America, Atlanta and Fulton County was the natural choice,” said Kamstrup CEO Lars Bo Kristensen. “We

see an increasing need and interest for intelligent and accurate water metering solutions for the water utilities. But also, the individual consumer has an increased focus on the usage, as the cost for clean water increases year by year.” The move was facilitated along with Roswell Inc, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Danish Trade Commission in Atlanta, Metro Atlanta Chamber and Georgia Power. Roswell Inc got involved in the project in the beginning on 2017, when Kamstrup had a small office presence in Sandy Springs. When the company began to seek a larger office for a possible headquarters in the metro Atlanta area, Roswell Inc jumped on the opportunity to present Roswell as a top choice. According to Carisa Turner, Roswell Inc’s director of communications and public relations, Kamstrup chose the city for several reasons, including its pool of talent, quality of life and the

The move has helped solidify relations between the state of Georgia and Denmark. “We are proud to have Kamstrup locate its North American headquarters here in Roswell,” Stroud said. “This

project is a great example of the impact strong collaboration by state, regional and local economic development agencies has in landing quality, innovative companies in our region. We are thrilled to have Kamstrup make its home in our city.”

Downtown Lawrenceville awash in new development Meeting with decision makers

Suburban downtown areas are flush with redevelopment these days as cities and developers rush to meet market demands of residents who want to be close to where some action is. Lawrenceville is the latest to double down on this idea. A couple years ago, or really any time in the history of the Atlanta metro area, I would have trumpeted what is going on in downtown Lawrenceville as epoch GEOFF SMITH development. But these days, what they Assurance Financial, are doing is keeping up with what’s gsmith@lendtheway.com going on in other cities like Alpharetta, Sugar Hill, Chamblee and Sandy Springs. All that said, there are at least three major projects going on in downtown Lawrenceville that will transform a city that already has seen significant downtown development. The projects include almost 40 acres of mixed-use development and a 2.2-mile linear park that will connect Georgia Gwinnett College with the Downtown District and open up development opportunities along the way. The biggest project being proposed is a 32-acre development behind the Lawrenceville Lawn Park and around City Hall that would include 600 residential units – 435 multifamily units and 159 single-family and townhouse units. Within that project would also be about 15,000 square feet of retail. Novare Group is the developer and is scheduled to present the project to the city in December, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Just across the Lawrenceville square and on 7.5 acres that used to be the site of the now demolished Lawrenceville High School (built in 1895), Richport Properties is proposing a $20 million mixed-use development. The project, being called City View, would include 58 single-family homes, townhomes, “cottages” and office space. According to the AJC, the developer is under a purchase-sale agreement with Lawrenceville’s Downtown Development Authority. The linear park is a significant project, mostly because of the opportunities it will create. This project has been in the planning stages for several years, and the city has recently hired Georgia Development Partners to run construction of the project, which is expected to begin next month, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. In addition to a new two-lane road, the project will include multi-use trails, bike paths, roundabouts and landscaping features. Multiple pocket parks and detention ponds are also shown in the plans – as are spaces for new townhomes, a restaurant, some retail space and a multi-level residential structure. One of the biggest things this corridor would do is connect the roughly 11,000 students enrolled at Georgia Gwinnett College with the downtown district and the two other

A rendering of a planned 32-acre mixed-use development that will include 435 multifamily units, 159 single-family and townhouse units, and 15,000 square feet of retail, all in downtown Lawrenceville. projects mentioned earlier. The corridor will also fold in an existing brewery named Slow Pour Brewing Company and 550 Trackside, a popular event facility housed in the city’s old train station. It should take about a year to demolish some of the buildings in the corridor to make way for the new road and trails. At that point, construction on the new infrastructure is said to begin. I imagine that retail businesses in downtown Lawrenceville are chomping at the bit to see these projects completed. With almost 660-residential units going in, they will see a significant increase in night-time and weekend customers. And with the office development and the connection to Georgia Gwinnett College, they will see a significant increase in daytime customers during the week. It will be a good time to be doing business in Lawrenceville for sure. Geoff Smith is a mortgage banker with Assurance Financial focusing on residential home loans for refinances and home purchases. How are you getting access to decision makers to sell your product or service? Is it taking you a long time to meet with someone who can give you a purchase order? Have you spent countless DICK JONES hours talking with Founder & President Jones Simply Sales people who have no authority to buy from you? Meeting with decision makers quickly is an important component to not only winning more business, but also getting business quicker. Depending on your customer profile, you may have immediate access to decision makers. For example, if you are selling to consumers who visit your place of business, you literally are talking with the buyer. That’s the easiest access you’ll get. However, if you’re selling in a business-to-business environment, you’ll often have to navigate from lower positions in the organization until you reach someone who can make a decision. A study conducted by the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler business school concluded that the easiest way to gain access to decision makers is to have someone who reports to them bring you there. In other words, if you can convince a direct reporter of a decision maker that it’s in their best interest to introduce you to their boss, you’ll be quickly talking to a decision maker. When plotting your course to gain access to decision makers, study the company’s organization chart. It’s far easier to gain access to lower level resources, show them what value you’ll provide, and have them take you to the decision maker. And when you’re meeting with the decision maker, you’ll be getting more business!

Contact lens research is here in Johns Creek Do you wear contact lenses? Can you imagine a world without them? Over the past few decades improvements in contact lens optics and material enhancements have dramatically improved the wearing experience of users globally. Looking forward, there is much to anticipate in the future of contact lenses beyond vision correction. Contact lenses may act as biosensors, drug delivery devices or in virtual/augmented reality. As futuristic as these ideas may sound, researchers are on the brink of bringing these technologies to life. Advancements in engineering and chemistry certainly drive new contact lens innovations, but clinical data is crucial to bring new products and product enhancements to the market. That’s where we at the Johns Creek Research Clinic come in and that’s how you may help…. Our staff thrives on vision care research. As we are not a primary

care clinic, we are dedicated to clinical research that enhances product development. Congratulations Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your practice? Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road. And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued. How did you react to the news of winning both these titles? To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm. As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment? After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists. I feel so fortunate to be able to address

both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service. You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – what is it? And what DR. TAYLOR does “MOHS” stand for? Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers. As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor. Is there anything else that you would like to share? I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. They care and it shows! And I am so grateful! So, to our team at Premier Dermatology, thank you for the fantastic job that you do every day! Thank you Dr. Taylor, and Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta.

Dental anxiety and how to overcome it By Dr. David Remaley If you ever get nervous just thinking about going to the dentist, you’re not alone. Perhaps you’re scared the visit might hurt or you haven’t been in a while and not sure what the dentist will find. Many people are anxious due to an unpleasant dental experience in their past. Whatever your reason, the right dental team will make sure your dental and your emotional health are taken care of. The more you delay – or just don’t go – to the dentist, the higher your risk of developing dental problems that will make gearing up for future dental visits more difficult. In fact, seeing your dentist regularly can actually make the entire process – from making an appointment to sailing through it – much easier on many levels. Use these strategies at your next appointment to help ease your anxiety and strengthen your smile. 1. Speak up Anyone with anxiety knows sharing your feelings makes a world of difference. If you’re tense or anxious, do yourself a favor and get your concerns off your chest. Your dentist and dental team are better able to treat you if they know your needs. Tell your dentist about your anxiety. When you book your appointment, tell the receptionist you’re nervous about dental visits. Remind the dentist and dental staff about your anxiety when you arrive. Share any bad experiences you may have had in the past, and ask for suggestions on coping strategies. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes knowing what is going to happen alleviates any fears of the unknown. Agree on a signal. Let your dentist know by raising your hand if you need to take a break during an exam. If you experience pain even with a local anesthetic, tell your dentist. Some patients get embarrassed about their pain tolerance or don’t want to interrupt a dentist during a procedure. Talk with your dentist about pain before it starts so your dentist knows how to communicate with you and make it more comfortable. 2. Distract yourself

Taking your mind off the exam may seem impossible when you’re nervous, but there are some things that that can help distract your thoughts. Wear headphones. If the sound of the drill bothers you, bring DR. REMALEY headphones so you can listen to your favorite music or audiobook. Some dental offices even have televisions or show DVDs. Occupy your hands by squeezing a stress ball or playing with a small handheld object, like a fidget spinner. Imagine your happy place and visualize yourself at a relaxing beach or garden. 3. Use mindfulness techniques Relaxation starts in the mind. Try deep breathing exercises to help relax tension in your muscles. Count your breaths. Inhale slowly and then exhale for the same number of counts. Do this five times while you’re waiting for your appointment, or during breaks while you’re sitting in the dental chair. Do a body scan. Concentrate on relaxing your muscles, one body part at a time. Start with your head and work your way down to your toes. For example, you can focus on releasing tension starting in your forehead, then your cheeks, your neck and down the rest of your body. Dieting for dollars (NAPSI)—A recent study in the journal Social Science & Medicine shows money is an effective motivator to “increase both the magnitude and duration of weight loss.” Another study published by The Journal of the American Medical Association called the double-incentivization model highly effective; that is, you’re more likely to succeed if you stand to lose something if you fail and to win something significant if you succeed. With that in mind, many individuals, social groups, businesses, schools, municipalities, hospitals and others have turned to the world’s leading purveyor of cash reward−driven corporate and team-based weight loss challenges. How It Works: The company, HealthyWage—known for pioneering innovative, outside-the-box, contestdriven weight loss programs—provides cash incentives along with social and expert-based support, tools and resources, and goal-setting and tracking technologies to foster participant success. Participants make a wager up front, ranging from $20 to $500 a month, and commit to a specific amount of weight loss in a specific time. Those who achieve their goals get a cash prize—often triple their investment. More than 200,000 participants have collectively lost over 10 million pounds and earned over $5 million in cash prizes for their pound-shedding success. Rejuvenate yourself before the holidays A caregiver in distress with our cosmetic services- just for you By Amy Hentschel

By Dr. Ushma Patel, D.M.D and Dr. Brittany Corbett, D.D.S Center For Advanced Dentistry The holidays are typically a time of the year that fill up our social calendar with work parties and school programs and festivities with our families. We interact socially with more people during the holidays than any other time of the year. It can be exhausting and for some downright stressful. Here are some options that we offer that will get you looking and feeling better before the holidays approach! Botox, used for TMJ pain and cosmetic purposes, is a safe, effective, and relatively painless way to improve your mood, self-esteem and image in the mirror. By feeling better about yourself, all social interactions are easier and more rewarding. With the holidays being the most social time of the year, whether we like it or not, Holiday BOTOX® is absolutely a must for cosmetic reasons! Or, are you noticing more lines and wrinkles developing around your eyes, nose, or mouth? If your skin is starting to lose

elasticity and you are coming out of the long summer with some premature signs of aging, schedule an appointment with Dr. Patel to learn more about the benefits of facial fillers. Radiesse is one of the longer-lasting facial fillers for smoothing out lines, wrinkles, and deeper folds around the nose and mouth. Another cosmetic procedure you may want to consider is our In-Office Zoom! Whitening! Many of the overthe-counter “whitening” solutions are only moderately effective. They may clear away surface level stains for a while, but they do not truly get to the root of the problem, and they will not whiten your teeth to the highest degree possible. Professional teeth whitening is different. It can reverse the effects of many years’ worth of stains and get your teeth looking bright and white, just like you want them to! Whether your teeth are crooked, stained, chipped, or otherwise damaged, you may want to consider getting dental veneers. Dental veneers can be done in very little time and can

So many of our senior care phone calls come from stressed out, burned out family caregivers. Their stories all have the same familiar details including years of giving personalized one-on-one care, sleepless nights, injuries of their own and complete frustration and exhaustion. The most important element of all runs through each family’s story, the sense of duty and obligation to the ones they love. “I know I can’t keep doing this, but I’m ok right now”. “I promised her I would never put her into an institution”. “No one can care for my mother like I can”. Here are some startling statistics about caregivers in America today: • There are 65 million caregivers providing 20 hours or more of unpaid care a week • Of these family caregivers, 60% work outside of the home • 70% suffer from depression • Women make up 66% of the caregivers and 64% of those live with the loved one • An estimated 30-40% of caregivers die before the ones they are caring for do National Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with AARP; November 2009

When we receive these calls, our goal is to come along side the family in need and help put resources in place to begin to relieve the heavy burden. Our goal is get the professionals in place either through home care services, HENTSCHEL adult day programs, or placement in assisted living to take over the physical care giving. Only then can that family caregiver return to caring for themselves and being the family member they were meant to be. We finally see the family restored and everyone back in their proper roles. I often tell families, “Caring for your loved one 24 hours/day, 7 days/week is a task we simply weren’t designed to perform. It’s like asking yourself to fly like a bird. It sounds like a lovely endeavor until you step off the limb”. Once the care is in place, we connect our families to the many and wonderful support groups in Gwinnett County. It helps to talk with others that have walked in your shoes and have gone before you. Amy Hentschel is a senior care consultant and owner at Senior Provisions, LLC. For more information visit www. Jordan Orthodontics thanks you By Dr. Jeff Jordan

• 1st Orthodontist in Alpharetta • Served Over 20,000 New Patients • Diplomat of American Board of Orthodontics • Convenient Office Hours

Wow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! Our first office was located where the Avalon is now, so we’ve seen the area transform from a small town into a bustling metropolis. We moved to our current location on North Point Parkway in 1996. Many of our earliest patients are now bringing in their own kids. I always get a kick out of showing the current teen patients the pictures and even models of their mom and dad’s teeth way back when. In some cases, we have treated 3 generations of the same family. We are so thankful for the loyal following that we have received over the years. We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last four years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 21,000

new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different DR. JORDAN orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. We can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. No thank you list would be complete without thanking my mom and dad who helped me start my practice. Also, a large shout out to my office manager, Laurie Stinger, who has been on board from day one. Orthodontics is a team effort and at Jordan Orthodontics we have been blessed with great patients and a great team over the years! Thanks again!!!

Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation.

CHATTAHOOCHEE 38, JOHNS CREEK 31:

Cougars win shootout over crosstown rivals By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com

Chattahoochee built the largest lead of the game midway through the first quarter after making a field goal and adding a rushing touchdown from quarterback Jack Corrigan. Hooch’s touchdown was set up by a snap over the head of Johns Creek’s punter that was recovered by the Cougars inside the 5-yard line. Johns Creek later tied the game at 10-10 with a Luke Venco field goal, the start of a flurry of scoring in the second quarter. Hooch scored from four yards out with an Andrew Thomas rush but the PAT was missed. Johns Creek responded quickly with a 74-yard pass from Zach Gibson to Matt Casey to go up 17-16. With 44 seconds remaining in the half, Corrigan hit Andrew

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Crosstown rivals Chattahoochee and Johns Creek played the eighth installment of their rivalry Friday night with Hooch coming out on top, 38-31, in a game that went down to the wire. “This was absolutely a big win,” Chattahoochee head coach Vince Strine said. “Hats off to Johns Creek, they were up for a fight. But our guys were, too.” The shootout featured seven lead changes, a goal-line stand in the final minutes and a gutsy 4th-and-1 call from Chattahoochee to seal the win. “It was definitely a see-saw game,” Strine said.

Centennial’s Brosmer leads Knights past Northview By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com

Class 6A Centennial 48, Northview 17 Centennial’s Max Brosmer had another standout performance for the Knights in their fourth-straight region win. Brosmer went 13-18 passing for 320 yards with three touchdowns and added 29 yards rushing. The Knights’ Emeka Nwanze rushed for 103 yards. Northview took an early 7-0 lead, but Centennial scored 20 unanswered points and led 27-10 at the half. Two big plays from Centennial — a 60-yard touchdown pass to Cal Dickie and 80-yard scoring rush from Nwanze — allowed the Knights to cruise to the win in the fourth quarter. Cambridge 38, Dunwoody 16 After starting the season 0-5, Cambridge has now put together a win streak after their lopsided victory over Dunwoody Friday night. Cambridge jumped out to a 21-3 lead with scores from Matt McCree and two touchdown throws from Hogan Dykes. The Bears’ Ty Wald and McCree

Class 7A Milton 17, West Forsyth 14 Milton head coach Adam Clack got a win over his former school when the Eagles outlasted West Forsyth in a region thriller Friday night. Milton took a 17-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter on a Hayden Hairston 23-yard field goal. West Forsyth then drove 69 yards on eight plays but faced a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line. West quarterback Zachary Burns rolled to his right but passed left to a waiting Garrett Woodall. Woodall came down with the reception, but was tackled mere inches from the goal line, forcing a turnover on downs. Milton took over, rushed for a first down and then ran out the clock in victory formation.

Roswell 36, Lassiter 30 (OT) Roswell captured its 15th straight region victory by outlasting Lassiter Friday night. Both of Roswell’s wins this season have come in overtime. The Hornets opened a 23-0 lead in the first half, but Lassiter fought back to tie the game at 30-30 late in the fourth. Lassiter looked poised to capture the win by recovering a blocked punt at Roswell’s 15-yard line with under 20 seconds remaining. However, their field goal attempt was missed. Lassiter opened overtime on offense but again failed to make a field goal. Roswell’s Kamonty Jett secured the win with a touchdown rush for the Hornets. Roswell rushed for nearly 400 yards in the win. North Forsyth 58, Forsyth Central 0 North Forsyth put on another offensive display Friday night, blasting Forsyth Central to open Region 5-AAAAAA play with a win. The Raiders got five touchdowns from Bryson Trigg in the first half and led 41-0 at the break. North’s defense held the Bulldogs to under 100 total yards of offense and forced five turnovers.

Class A-Private

Whitefield Academy 31, Fellowship Christian 24 Fellowship’s loss to Whitefield Friday night wasn’t as devastating as their last-second loss to Walker last week, but it was another distressing outcome that came late in the game. Fellowship led 24-10 early in the fourth quarter, but Whitefield cut the lead to a single score with a 70-yard touchdown pass just a few minutes later. Whitefield then recovered an onside kick and later scored to tie the game at 24-24. On Fellowship’s ensuing drive, a holding call negated a long touchdown pass and the Paladins were eventually forced to punt. With six minutes remaining, Whitefield got another long scoring play, a 40-yard rush, to take the lead and hold on for the win. Fellowship’s two straight region losses are its first since 2014. Mount Pisgah 49, St. Francis 27 Mount Pisgah scored over 45 points for the fourth consecutive game and remained unbeaten in region play with

ALPHARETTA 37, POPE 14:

Alpharetta remains at the top with win over Greyhounds By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com MARIETTA, Ga. — It didn’t look like the most promising start for Region 7-AAAAAA leaders Alpharetta. Facing Pope (2-4, 2-2) on the road, the Greyhounds needed just seven plays to find the end zone on the opening drive of the game. Then, on Alpharetta’s ensuing possession, the Raiders went three and out. Alpharetta’s offense also stalled on its second drive and the score remained 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. “It seems like every time we play an away game we have an interesting start,” Alpharetta head coach Jacob Nichols said. “We knew they were going to come out and hit us in the mouth, and they did.” But then the Raiders got a spark, the first that led them to a 37-14 region win. Alpharetta’s Dylan Schorr pinned Pope on their own 1-yard line with a punt. Three plays later, Alpharetta forced a safety as Pope threw a pass into the flat in the end zone. Alpharetta (5-1, 4-0) then put to-

gether a quick, five-play drive capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Downing to Spencer Gaddis. Alpharetta’s defense then found its rhythm, disrupting Pope’s shift-heavy offense, setting up a punt and another touchdown pass from Downing to Gaddis to extend the Raiders’ lead to 16-6. “Our defense responded, and our offense got some big plays and it turned out in our favor,” Nichols said. In the second half, Alpharetta’s stout defensive play continued while their offense racked up yards and points. Nolan Edmonds, who missed multiple games earlier this season with an injury, opened the second half scoring with a 53-yard touchdown rush. Edmonds and Kevin Watkins shared carries throughout the night. “It definitely makes us a little more potent having [Edmonds] back,” Nichols said. Having Watkins and Edmonds will make the Raiders’ a rushing threat, he added. “Kevin did a great job when Edmonds couldn’t go and definitely earned his right to be on the field,” he said. “Edmonds being a senior leader,

he’s been earning it for a long time.” In addition to rushing scores, Downing added his third touchdown pass of the game, this time to Luke Estes after a fumble recovery from the Raiders’ Dane Motley. The Raiders opened a 30-6 lead before a roughing the kicker penalty kept a Pope drive alive in the fourth. The Greyhounds would eventually score and add a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 30-14. Alpharetta then ate away nearly six minutes of clock in 12 plays, capped off by an Edmonds 9-yard touchdown. A Jaycee Horn interception in the final two minutes iced the game. With the win, the Raiders improved to 4-0 in region play and remained alone at the top of the standings. The Raiders will host Johns Creek (2-5, 2-3) Friday in a matchup that has resulted in two-straight years of heartbreaking losses for Alpharetta. “It’s one that we want to win because they have gotten the best of us the last two years,” Nichols said. “We’ll work hard this week, it’ll be nice to be home, and hopefully we can take care of business.”

Volleyball area tournaments end with crowning of champions 13 local teams earn playoff spots By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Volleyball area tournaments commenced Thursday night with two local teams earning area championships and 13 teams securing playoff berths. The state playoffs will begin next week.

Area 4-AAAAAAA After entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed, Roswell dispatched Woodstock in the first round in four sets to earn its second straight playoff appearance. But after the Woodstock win, the Hornets had perhaps the toughest draw in the state in the second round. Roswell faced Walton, the two-time defending state champions in the GHSA’s highest classification in the second round. Roswell was swept in three sets. In the third place game, Roswell fell to Lassiter in four sets. Roswell fell to Mill Creek in the first round of the state playoffs last year.

Area 5-AAAAAAA North Forsyth went 5-0 in regular season area play, but in the final match of the area tournament, the Lady Raiders fell short against Lambert. With the area championship match tied 2-2, Lambert got off to a quick lead in the decisive fifth set and held on for a 15-9, title-clinching win. South Forsyth downed Milton in the opening match of the tournament, a must-win to secure a playoff berth for the Lady War Eagles, the defending area champs. In the second round, South dropped three straight sets to North, but defeated West Forsyth in four sets in the third place match.

Area 7-AAAAAA Defending area champions Alpharetta made it two-straight titles on Thursday night after downing Johns Creek in a battle of two of the top

programs in Class 6A in the area title match. The Lady Raiders dominated North Atlanta and Centennial to open the tournament before facing Johns Creek in the third round, the first meeting of the teams in the tournament. After dropping the first set 25-22, Alpharetta won 25-16 and 25-20 to advance to the finals where they would beat Johns Creek once again. Johns Creek opened the tournament with two wins against Chattahoochee and Pope before their first loss to Alpharetta relegated them to the loser’s bracket. After beating Pope again in two sets, the Lady Gladiators advanced to the finals and secured the No. 2 seed from the area. After falling to Johns Creek to open the tournament, Chattahoochee won three straight matches, but fell to Pope to earn the No. 4 seed. The Lady Cougars earned a playoff berth after failing to make the playoffs last season for the first time in four seasons. Five teams make the playoffs from the area, and the final playoff berth was decided between Cambridge and Centennial. After making the quarterfinals in the state playoffs the last two seasons, Cambridge fell to Centennial in two sets to be locked out of the playoffs. Centennial’s playoff berth is its first since 2013.

Area 7-AAAA Though Blessed Trinity is one of the most dominant programs in the state, having won the state championship the past three years and six in total, they often do so after failing to earn an area championship. This year was no different. In a rematch of last year’s area championship match, Blessed Trinity and Marist met once again for the area title Thursday night, but this year the Lady Titans fell short. Marist downed BT in four sets (2325, 25-10, 25-14, 25-20) to earn the area crown. Blessed Trinity will seek their fourth-straight state championship and will enter the state playoffs as the No. 2 seed from Area 7-AAAA.

Area 6-A No team had an answer for Area 6’s top-seeded Walker, the eventual area champions, but three local teams secured playoff berths in the area tournament. No. 3 seeded St. Francis earned the program’s second state playoff appearance by reaching the area championship match against Walker. The Lady Knights would fall in four sets, but earned a home playoff match for the first time in program history. Fellowship Christian beat St. Francis in the second round of the tournament, but would drop their second match to the Lady Knights in the semifinals. The Lady Paladins earned their fourth straight playoff appearance and will enter the state tournament as the No. 3 seed from Area 6-A. After opening the tournament with a win over Whitefield Academy, Mount Pisgah fell to Walker in the second round. The Lady Patriots then beat Pinecrest Academy in their next match to secure the final playoff berth from the area.

Area tournament results (All secured state playoff berths): Area 4-7A 1. Walton 2. Etowah 3. Lassiter 4. Roswell Area 5-7A 1. Lambert 2. North Forsyth 3. South Forsyth 4. West Forsyth Area 7-6A 1. Alpharetta 2. Johns Creek 3. Pope 4. Chattahoochee 5. Centennial Area 7-4A 1. Marist 2. Blessed Trinity 3. West Hall 4. Chestatee Area 6-A 1. Walker 2. St. Francis 3. Fellowship Christian 4. Mount Pisgah

lead on a 7-yard pass from Corrigan to Marcus Stephen and a 2-point conversion with nine minutes remaining in the game. Corrigan threw for 172 yards and rushed for 121 with four total touchdowns in the win. In the final minutes, Johns Creek drove inside Hooch’s five-yard line and looked poised to tie the game once again. But Hooch’s defense would stand tall with their backs against the wall. “We let them out of a fourth down conversion and a 3rd-and-39 earlier in the game,” Strine said. “But at the very end when we had to have it, we forced a turnover on downs.” But the game still wasn’t sealed. Chattahoochee needed a first down in order to run out the clock to secure the win. After three plays, Johns Creek’s defense held the Cougars to a 4th-and-1 in their own territory. But instead of punting the ball away, Strine and Chattahoochee decided to play for the win. “To me, it was a no-brainer,” Strine said. Hooch attempted to draw Johns Creek off sides. When that didn’t work, they let Corrigan run a QB sneak, which drew enough yardage to gain a first down to ice the win. With the win, the Cougars improved to 4-1 in Region 7-AAAAAA and sit in third in the standings. It’s the first 4-1 start to region play for Chattahoochee since 2011. “As the program is concerned, it’s another step taken to where we want to be,” Strine said. Chattahoochee wants to be at the top after failing to make the playoffs the last four years, but Strine said the Cougars’ will not get ahead of themselves. “Our next biggest game of the year is Pope,” he said. The Cougars have a bye this week before hosting the Greyhounds Oct. 20. Johns Creek fell to 2-3 in region play and face region leaders Alpharetta on the road next Friday.

PH-17-31 69 North Main Street/Addition to Contributing Historic Building Addition (Council Only) Consideration of a request to a change to a Council condition regarding architecture. The property is located at 69 North Main Street and is legally described as being located in Land Lots 1253 & 1268, 2nd District, 2nd Section, Fulton County, Georgia. Note: Georgia law requires that all parties who have made campaign contributions to the Mayor or to a Council Member in excess of two hundred fifty dollars ($250) within the past two (2) years must complete a campaign contribution report with the Community Development Department. The complete text of the Georgia law and a disclosure form are available in the office of the City Clerk, 2 Park Plaza, Alpharetta, Georgia.

first? Traffic, traffic and traffic. Our city is gridlocked, and it affects every citizen and every business within our borders. If we cannot come up with a total solution to this issue, employers will lose employees who choose to work closer to home. Our schools will continue to lose teachers who also choose to work closer to home, and it will be impossible to recruit new business and employers to our area. Our issue is not just a homegrown one. We must work hand in hand with the surrounding communities who are adding greatly to our traffic issues, and we must make sure that our citizens are highly involved in developing solutions that are practical and sensible. If we cannot solve this issue and solve it soon, it will only get worse.
