Woman bilked out of $3,100 JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — A woman answering an online popup ad lost $3,100, but she later was able to help police in St. Louis find a suspect who admitted to the swindle.

The woman said that on Sept. 22, she was surfing the internet when she saw an advertisement pop up asking if she wanted to make extra money. She clicked on the link and provided her personal information.

The next day, a package arrived in the mail with instructions to cash the enclosed $3,100 check, use the money to buy five $520 money orders and

After she performed the task, the woman received an alert from her bank telling her that the cashed check was fake. She then contacted police in the area of the provided address to inform them about the fraud.

She later met with officers in St. Louis to speak to a man calling himself Tony Wilson who had admitted to the incident. The woman was advised to contact Johns Creek police to report the scam.

Police identified an opened kitchen window, above the sink, as the possible point of entry. An air-conditioning unit that had been placed in the window was hanging outside by its electrical cord. The rear sliding glass door was also opened and identified as the possible point of exit.

The woman said that multiple items were missing from her home, including two laptops, various pieces of jewelry, two televisions, alcohol, designer bags, a comforter set, shoes and vacation souvenirs. She gave officers any serial numbers she had for the electronics.

Police could not find any surveillance cameras when they searched the neighborhood. But when you sit down and analyze the actual cost and benefits of LASIK, you may be surprised to find out that it is more affordable than you expected.

Furthermore, an annual eye exam is needed and additional eyecare products, such as contact lens solutions, will be purchased. If you are an individual in your 20s to 30s, these costs can add up to over thousands of dollars over the span of years.

Consideration should also be given to the costs of contact-lens related problems, such as dry eyes, corneal abrasions, and infections. These problems can become expensive due to additional clinic visits and necessary eye drops for treatment. Lastly, think about how much time you would save without the need for routine or emergency doctor’s appointments and daily contact lens care. Several online calculators from Johnson & Johnson (www. backinfocus.com/lasik-eye-procedure-cost.html) and the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society (www.refractivealliance.com/lasik-affordability-calculator/) have been created to help you determine your lifetime cost for glasses and contact lenses. As an example, an individual in his or her 30s will spend about $18,510 over his or her lifetime for reusable contact lenses.

So while you may have thought of LASIK initially as a luxury, you should now think of it more like an investment. It is an investment designed to help you save money and the long-term burdens of contact lenses and prescription glasses. If the one-time cost with LASIK seems daunting, keep in mind that most refractive practices and surgeons provide financing options to break it down into smaller payments over time. Revised proposals put Deal, Woods at odds over testing

By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA – Flexibility in student testing and the impact of scores continues to be a thorn in the side of state and local educators who have spent years finding the right balance for students.

Georgia recently DEAL submitted its plan on how to implement new federal education rules, but disagreement over the plan’s testing and accountability measures divides the Georgia Department of Education and the Governor’s Office.

WOODS In 2015, federal education officials put the last nail in the No Child Left Behind coffin, passing the Every Student Succeeds Act in its place.

States had the past year to sub-

mit plans on how it would achieve the goals set by ESSA, which significantly reduces mandated testing and the perceived overreach of the federal government.

The law mandates state governors be given 30 days to review the plan, but it does not require the governor’s approval or signature for submittal.

While the vast majority of states have the joint blessing of their education chief and governor, Georgia joins several other states where governors have opted not to sign onto the ESSA plan.

The disagreement between Gov. Nathan Deal and State School Superintendent Richard Woods is tied to accountability and local control. In a series of letters between the two state leaders, Deal pushed for more targeted testing, beginning in kindergarten, and driven by the local school system, while Woods maintains systems have pushed for fewer mandated tests.

Disagreement also revolves around Georgia’s annual “report card” on school performance – the College and Career Ready Performance Index. The revised plan puts more emphasis on performance and achievement, and less emphasis on “exceeding the bar” for underperforming student groups.

ANGELA PALM Legislative director for the GSBA and more emphasis on the performance of students in these classes. Anecdotally, the points received on the CCRPR for AP participation may have caused schools to push unprepared students into rigorous courses.

A spokesperson for the Georgia School Board Association says the differences run deep.

Local control and flexibility in testing has long been an issue for local school systems. Fulton County School leaders have been at the forefront of the debate, even writing some of the language in Senate Bill 211, signed into law in July, which gives systems more flexibility in testing.

Fulton Schools is now one of the 30+ entities invited to be part of the Governor’s Assessment Innovation and Flexibility Task Force to further implement flexibility.

“Serving on the task force allows Fulton County Schools to continue showing support for flexibility and accountability in testing to strategically focus our district’s time, energy and resources on innovative and flexible programs that meet the needs of students,” said Susan Hale, spokesperson for Fulton Schools.

Early voting begins Oct. 16 in Milton MILTON, Ga. — Early voting for the 2017 municipal general and special elections in Fulton County will begin soon.

Those registered to vote will be able to do so Oct. 16-Nov. 3. Early voting will take place weekdays 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. There will be two opportunities to vote early on the weekend: 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28 and from noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 29.

The early voting polling location in Milton is the Milton Library, located at 855 Mayfield Road.

Regular voting will be held on Election Day Nov. 7. Any runoffs will be held Dec. 5.

Cambridge student scores perfect ACT MILTON, Ga. — Cambridge senior Michael “Cole” Carrow scored a perfect composite score of 36 on a recent ACT test. Carrow earned a perfect score in the English, math, reading and science portions of the test.

According to a news release from the ACT, less than one percent of those taking the test earn a perfect composite score.

Carrow is a member of the Cambridge marching band, Young Men’s Service League and Reset Robotics, Georgia’s first robotics competition team he co-founded with nine friends last year.

Carrow is applying to Georgia Tech, MIT and Carnegie Mellon University.

Artisanal food cliches to sink your teeth into A few weeks ago, Editor Pat Fox gave his take on overused phrases and cliches such as “bottom line,” “24/7” and “outside the box.”

While these cliches are certainly overused in the JOE PARKER world of politics and Reporter joe@appenmediagroup.com business, there are plenty more that can be found in the world of food.

About 10 years ago, there was a dramatic shift in how we see food. Most people moved away (at least in their words) from fast food, meals in a box and prepackaged gruel. Food shifted from something the common man saw

as fuel, and more toward being an experience.

At around the same time, I entered the restaurant industry. Working in a restaurant was viewed as a job for burnouts, drug addicts, failures, alcoholics, criminals or people who didn’t know what they wanted to do with their life. Now, so many people view working in a restaurant as being an artistic craft. Like a painter, the cook bares his soul, his creativity and his life’s work onto a piece of porcelain in place of canvas.

With these changes in perception came the belief that all food had to be artistic expression and naturally, that is now how it’s advertised.

But like my editor’s feelings on cliches that mostly relate to politics and

business, I take issue with advertisers using words incorrectly or, where they are not needed, when describing foods.

Some of the worst offenders: • Artisanal: When it comes to food, artisanal means made by hand and usually in small batches. There is no way that you will ever get an “artisanal” burger from a fast food joint that sells hundreds of thousands a day.

• Hand-Crafted: Well, I didn’t expect that my burrito was elbow-crafted.

You can’t tell me the stoned 17-year-old fast food worker that only has a job because his parent’s forced him into one is “crafting” your food. Yes, it’s put together by hand. That’s not special.

• Infused: This is just a fanciful way of saying a food was marinated with another flavoring. But “marinated” cocktails doesn’t have the same ring to it.

• Gourmet: In food terms, gourmet involves elaborate preparation of the finest and/or rarest of ingredients. French fries are not gourmet simply because they have truffle oil on them. (Fun fact: truffles don’t contain oil. You are paying an exorbitant amount for rapeseed oil).

I’m sure everyone reading this adds different ingredients to the meat, places different items on the burger or uses different bread or cheese.

You cannot define authentic where food is concerned.

Finally, I just need to get this off my chest since it seems to be popping up everywhere on fast food advertisements.

Aioli may provoke an Italian gourmet, hand-crafted, artisanal, infused and authentic sauce, but its mayonnaise.

Seriously, it’s mayonnaise with garlic in it. Stop advertising it like it’s the nectar of the gods.

Florida evacuee pitched in to help others displaced by Irma

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Alpharetta city officials recently honored the volunteers who stepped forward to assist those displaced by Hurricane Irma in September.

One of the honorees, in some ways the one who contributed most, is himself a Florida man who lost everything in the storm.

At a ceremony Oct. 2, Mayor David Belle Isle presented a proclamation recognizing a host of residents, businesses and city employees who played key roles in providing relief to Irma’s victims.

They included YMCA Director Scott Doll, who initiated the city’s actions by calling the mayor and getting the city to open its facilities to displaced visitors.

It included Christine Young, supervisor at the Wills Park Community Center, where close to 70 people found a place to stay while their homes in Florida and South Georgia were besieged.

Not present at the ceremony, however, was David Noringer, a Florida storm refugee who came up a day before Irma made landfall. He spent the next four days setting up cots, serving food and volunteering in other capacities at the Community Center.

“He wasn’t just an evacuee,” Belle Isle said. “He came here to help.”

Young, who supervised arrangements at the Community Center, said Noringer was a tireless worker.

“He didn’t have to do these things,” she said, “but he insisted he needed to earn his keep. He took the initiative to do things without being asked.”

This wasn’t Noringer’s first bout with adversity.

Disabled by wounds sustained in a robbery years ago, Noringer was renting a room in Hudson, working part time on a crab boat to help make ends meet when Irma came calling.

He said he called an information line for evacuee information and was referred to the Alpharetta shelter.

“I was the first one to check into the shelter, and from my understanding that was the first time they were doing an evacuation,” Noringer said. “As soon as I got there, I jumped in with whatever I could help with.”

Noringer greeted incoming families and gave them a tour of the facilities.

There’s still room for growth in Alpharetta downtown Businesses see activity as a positive for city

The potential lies primarily along Main Street, where parcels are available for live-work and mixed-use development.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Last week’s approval of a large housing development on Cumming Street was the final chapter in a flurry of residential building that has transformed Alpharetta’s downtown.

Taylor-Morrison’s plan to build 58 homes at the north edge of downtown is the capstone for a housing surge that could bring more than 2,000 residents to the city’s core.

And that’s not the half of it.

Over the past five years, downtown’s commercial portfolio has expanded to include more than a dozen new restaurants, multi-story office buildings and retail shops – all either built or under development.

While space for new residential construction has dwindled down to small lots, there’s still plenty of room for commercial and office in downtown, according to Alpharetta Planning Director Kathi Cook.

Less than 10 years ago, Downtown Alpharetta was a struggling center with a handful of restaurants and shops.

Cook said the transformation took off with the 2015 revision of the Downtown Land Use Plan.

“The mayor and council gave us direction a few years ago to work on a Downtown Master Plan, and we went through that process for a year and a half,” Cook said.

In her 26 years with the city, Cook said, the document drew the most citizen involvement of any enterprise the city has engaged in. About 600 people participated in workshops to help draft the final document.

And with the recent additions of Main Street’s City Center and Avalon on Old Milton Parkway, Cook said interest in the downtown has spiked. So has building.

“We have people who like it, and we have people who don’t like it,” Cook

The change has been dramatic and positive for two longtime downtown businessmen.

View from the ground level When Dr. J.C. Hines opened a oneman veterinary clinic on Milton Avenue back in 1973, he was two blocks away from the only traffic light in town.

There was one bank, one high school, two barbershops and three restaurants.

Today, Hines’ Alpharetta Animal Hospital has eight veterinarians on staff and two dozen employees.

From his perspective, Hines said city leaders have followed a careful path toward prosperity.

“One thing that I will always be able to recall is that Alpharetta has always been blessed with dedicated people to serve on the city government,” he said.

“Fortunately we had and still have visionaries which has made Alpharetta ‘The Place to Be.’” Hines admitted traffic could become

Adding value to downtown, he said, will also benefit all residents by raising the tax base.

Longtime downtown business owner Larry Attig agrees.

“I happen to think that we’re on the right path and I like what we’re doing,” he said.

When he came to Alpharetta 40 years ago, downtown was alive and bustling for a small city. After operating a horse stable on what is now Old Milton Parkway for six years, Attig moved downtown in 1988 to run a flower shop on Main Street.

Then, as the town spread outward with subdivisions, the mall was built, big box stores arrived and downtown seemed to dry up, he said.

“I’ve watched the downtown literally become a ghost town,” Attig said.

He retired in 2006 but still owns property in downtown. Through the years, he has been active in the downtown business community, always pushing the dream to revive the district.

When discussions first began for a Downtown Master Plan in 2003, he saw it as an opportunity to jump start growth.

It didn’t happen – not for another decade.

In 2012, the city invested $31 million to develop City Center, a mixed-use project that included a new city hall and space for retail, office and residential.

Attig said he hears from people who are concerned about residential density and the addition of apartments. But, he

added, the city has numerous restrictions on high density, and the city will never face the challenges of a Buckhead or a Perimeter, where apartment buildings can tower 40 stories.

As for traffic, Attig said he hails from a small town in Iowa that had one restaurant, one tavern and one bank.

“But, guess what? We don’t have any traffic problems,” he said.

He wants to see the city continue its plan to build downtown.

“I think if we put on the brakes right now, a lot of the people who have invested in the city are going to be sadly disappointed and at some point they’ll probably will not survive,” he said.

Even with the restrictions in the Land Use Plan, City Planner Cook said many people do not recognize the measures city officials go to in order to ensure orderly growth. Many proposals that come to her department never even find their way to the Planning Commission, she said.

Moreover, Cook said, the City Council has amended the Land Use Plan several times to address public concerns, such as increasing the minimum required residential lot size outside of the Milton Avenue and Main Street core area.

This month, the City Council will consider a proposed change that would lower recommended heights outside of the core area, she said. It will also consider incentives, such as allowing gravel parking areas and parking reductions, to encourage properties to preserve existing structures.

“We feel very confident with the plan we have,” Cook said. “That’s not to say we don’t go back and ask for changes.”

He assembled cots, served food and volunteered for other odd jobs to show his gratitude.

When the shelter closed down on Sept. 12, he helped pack up the cots.

His reputation as a workhorse spread. The mayor stopped by for a visit. Another city staffer came by to shake his hand and present him with a job application.

When he returned for Florida, Noringer found everything destroyed.

He was ineligible for FEMA assistance because he had no lease on the room he was renting. So, he packed up a couple of weeks ago and headed to Phoenix where he enrolled in a resettlement program.

“I just had a thought in my head,” he said. “It’s still warm. In Phoenix, I don’t have to worry about snow, and I don’t have to worry about any more hurricanes. It don’t rain in the desert so I don’t have to worry about getting flooded anymore.”

He said he’s trying to start over in Phoenix with a positive outlook, but he’s keeping his fingers crossed about a job in Alpharetta.

“I most definitely would like to get back,” Noringer said. “The way the community came together in such a short period of time, it brought tears to my eyes.”

North Fulton SWAT pitches armored vehicle, robotic equipment Alpharetta Police chief says devices would improve public safety

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Three North Fulton cities will consider sharing costs to provide local SWAT team members with an armored vehicle and small robotic devices for use in lethal situations.

The proposal, introduced at an Oct. 2 workshop before the Alpharetta City Council, came one day after a gunman opened fire on concert attendees along the Las Vegas Strip, killing 58 and wounding hundreds of others.

The presentation had been placed on the council agenda the prior week, but elected officials referenced the Las Vegas incident as a timely reminder of what law enforcement agencies are faced with in today’s society.

Alpharetta Public Safety Director John Robison told council members that the new equipment would increase safety for police and citizens.

to us all the evil that we deal with in the world,” Robison said. “We’ve actually been talking about this for months and months.”

Sometimes, law enforcement is criticized for “our toys,” Robison said. But an armored vehicle and miniature robots will help protect police not only in situations where they come under fire but collect information about potential

threats without risking lives.

The North Fulton SWAT Team, commanded by Alpharetta Police Lt. D.L. French, consists of close to 50 officers from Alpharetta, Roswell and Milton.

French said the total cost for the equipment, $376,000, would be shared by each city according to population.

Under those terms, Roswell would contribute $180,000, Alpharetta $127,000, and Milton’s share would be $67,000.

Currentlythe North Fulton SWAT Team has no safe way to rescue citizens or officers who are under direct gunfire, French said. The team also has no safe way to approach buildings where crimes are unfolding.

The armored rescue vehicle alone has a price tag of $312,000. Its annual maintenance cost is about $500, with insurance costs estimated at $900 per year.

The agencies are also considering two small robotic devices for the SWAT Team.

The Avatar III robot is a large tracked robot that would give police the ability to carry on a conversation with a suspect without having to make entry.

The purchase price is $48,036. Its expected annual operations and maintenance cost is $100.

Alpharetta city leaders are expected to consider the purchase at a meeting in the coming weeks. Officials in Roswell and Milton are expected to hear the proposal for the first time later this month.

Danish company names Roswell as North American headquarters Kamstrup to bring 52 jobs to Fulton

The Georgia Department of Economic Development recently announced that the Danish company Kamstrup has selected Roswell as its new region headquarters, bringing 52 jobs to the area.

“It’s incredibly significant to the strength and prestige of both the business community and the city as a whole,” said Roswell Inc’s Executive Director Steve Stroud. “Not only does this create new, high quality jobs in Roswell, but Kamstrup is also bringing with them a large investment of international equipment to this location. And we expect they will continue growing and expanding their operations here in the coming decade.”

Kamstrup is an international company spread out across 24 countries that supplies electricity, district heating and water metering solutions. Founded in 1946, Kamstrup prides itself on measuring and managing both energy and water consumption worldwide. It is headquartered in Skanderborg, Denmark and employs over 1,200 people. It has 18 distributors in America.

“By the rapidly growing sales in the USA and need for a production plant in North America, Atlanta and Fulton County was the natural choice,” said Kamstrup CEO Lars Bo Kristensen. “We

see an increasing need and interest for intelligent and accurate water metering solutions for the water utilities. But also, the individual consumer has an increased focus on the usage, as the cost for clean water increases year by year.”

The move was facilitated along with Roswell Inc, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Danish Trade Commission in Atlanta, Metro Atlanta Chamber and Georgia Power.

Roswell Inc got involved in the project in the beginning on 2017, when Kamstrup had a small office presence in Sandy Springs. When the company began to seek a larger office for a possible headquarters in the metro Atlanta area, Roswell Inc jumped on the opportunity to present Roswell as a top choice.

According to Carisa Turner, Roswell Inc’s director of communications and public relations, Kamstrup chose the city for several reasons, including its pool of talent, quality of life and the

Downtown Lawrenceville awash in new development Meeting with decision makers

Suburban downtown areas are flush with redevelopment these days as cities and developers rush to meet market demands of residents who want to be close to where some action is. Lawrenceville is the latest to double down on this idea.

A couple years ago, or really any time in the history of the Atlanta metro area, I would have trumpeted what is going on in downtown Lawrenceville as epoch GEOFF SMITH development. But these days, what they Assurance Financial, are doing is keeping up with what’s gsmith@lendtheway.com going on in other cities like Alpharetta, Sugar Hill, Chamblee and Sandy Springs. All that said, there are at least three major projects going on in downtown Lawrenceville that will transform a city that already has seen significant downtown development.

The projects include almost 40 acres of mixed-use development and a 2.2-mile linear park that will connect Georgia Gwinnett College with the Downtown District and open up development opportunities along the way.

The biggest project being proposed is a 32-acre development behind the Lawrenceville Lawn Park and around City Hall that would include 600 residential units – 435 multifamily units and 159 single-family and townhouse units.

Within that project would also be about 15,000 square feet of retail. Novare Group is the developer and is scheduled to present the project to the city in December, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Just across the Lawrenceville square and on 7.5 acres that used to be the site of the now demolished Lawrenceville High School (built in 1895), Richport Properties is proposing a $20 million mixed-use development. The project, being called City View, would include 58 single-family homes, townhomes, “cottages” and office space. According to the AJC, the developer is under a purchase-sale agreement with Lawrenceville’s Downtown Development Authority.

The linear park is a significant project, mostly because of the opportunities it will create. This project has been in the planning stages for several years, and the city has recently hired Georgia Development Partners to run construction of the project, which is expected to begin next month, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post. In addition to a new two-lane road, the project will include multi-use trails, bike paths, roundabouts and landscaping features. Multiple pocket parks and detention ponds are also shown in the plans – as are spaces for new townhomes, a restaurant, some retail space and a multi-level residential structure.

The corridor will also fold in an existing brewery named Slow Pour Brewing Company and 550 Trackside, a popular event facility housed in the city’s old train station. It should take about a year to demolish some of the buildings in the corridor to make way for the new road and trails. At that point, construction on the new infrastructure is said to begin.

I imagine that retail businesses in downtown Lawrenceville are chomping at the bit to see these projects completed. With almost 660-residential units going in, they will see a significant increase in night-time and weekend customers. And with the office development and the connection to Georgia Gwinnett College, they will see a significant increase in daytime customers during the week. It will be a good time to be doing business in Lawrenceville for sure.

How are you getting access to decision makers to sell your product or service? Is it taking you a long time to meet with someone who can give you a purchase order? Have you spent countless DICK JONES hours talking with Founder & President Jones Simply Sales people who have no authority to buy from you? In other words, if you can convince a direct reporter of a decision maker that it’s in their best interest to introduce you to their boss, you’ll be quickly talking to a decision maker.

When plotting your course to gain access to decision makers, study the company’s organization chart. It’s far easier to gain access to lower level resources, show them what value you’ll provide, and have them take you to the decision maker. And when you’re meeting with the decision maker, you’ll be getting more business!

GET OUTSIDE, GEORGIA:

Close encounters of the bear kind “Don’t get eaten by a bear!” my wife said to me as I left the house that morning.

Don’t get eaten by a bear? Well, yeah.

Actually, that was the second STEVE HUDSON time she’d said that Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net to me that morning. We’d been talking about bears at breakfast. I’d told her I was hoping to do a little smallstream fishing that afternoon somewhere way back in the mountains.

I’d also told her that I was going to be fishing an area where bears were not uncommon.

Why did I feel the need to mention bears at all? Maybe because bears are always a good topic of conversation.

Or maybe I said it because I wanted to impress the lady in my life with my extreme bravery out there in the middle of all that raw and untamed nature.

“Think of it!” I said. “Me and the wilderness!”

“Uh-hm,” she replied. “Have fun.”

And then she said it again: “Don’t get eaten by a bear.”

A couple of hours later, I was parking the car at a pull-off along a rough dirt road far back in the Chattahoochee National Forest. I was “bluelining,” which is fisherman-talk for the art of finding and fishing those delightfully small streams known only as blue lines on topo maps. Such water is remote and often all but unfished, and the experience of exploring it can be incredible.

But it’s not for the faint of heart.

Sometimes the trails are bad. Fallen trees block your way. Loose rocks and wicked roots try to trip you. You may encounter yellow jackets, hornets and ticks. And spiders. And rattlesnakes.

Wild hogs wander through now and then, and they’re mean. Skunks pass this way as well, and they – well, they stink. And yes, just to make sure you don’t get bored, every now and then you’ll encounter a bear.

But the solitude can be exquisite, and the fishing can unforgettable.

What’s it like to fish this kind of water? To be honest, it can be intense.

For one thing, there are of laurel and rhododendron as thick and impenetrable as a fence made of spring steel.

Sometimes the creek will unexpectedly narrow, too, with rock crowding in from both sides. You’ll have to clamber over it or detour around it until finally, breathing hard, you get past it and

It’s fun. Really, it is.

I’d been doing that kind of thing most of the morning, fishing my way slowly up the little creek, when I started to get a feeling. Yes, I had the overwhelming sense that I had company somewhere out there in the deep, dark woods.

I was sure there were no other anglers on the stream, but the feeling persisted. What could it be?

I slowly looked around, and there was my answer: a black bear that weighed 300, 800 or maybe 10,000 pounds standing broadside to me in the middle of the creek about 10 yards away.

I must have been downwind of the bear, for it didn’t seem alarmed. It just stood there and looked at me, and I saw the hair on its back rustle as a whisper of wind blew up the creek.

This, I thought to myself, is interesting.

Bear and I continued to stand there looking at each other. Perhaps 20 seconds ticked away.

What, I asked myself, do I do now?

Still the bear stood motionless.

Slowly, very slowly, I turned my head right and then left to see what my options might be. I figured I needed to be prepared, just in case, for I doubted that there was much defensive power in a 5-foot fly rod.

I scanned the hillside on both sides of the creek. There didn’t seem to be much in the way of escape routes. My options were pretty limited.

So I turned my gaze back to the bear –

But the bear was gone. As in gone.

Vanished, Disappeared. Like it had never been there at all.

Had it really been there? Yep. Was it there now? Nope.

But it was somewhere. Yes, somewhere in the woods around me was a 25,000 lb. black bear in stealth mode, and I had no idea where it had gone.

Snap decision: songs! I’d sing a song, and surely that would scare the bear away. Actually, if you’ve ever heard me sing, you know that’s not as farfetched as it sounds.

So sing I did, and loudly too.

Just in case the singing wasn’t working, I decided I really didn’t need to fish that area any further. I decided it would be a good time to head back, which I did with no attention at all to moving quietly through water or woods. Picture it: singing, crashing through the underbrush, waving that fly rod like a crazed swordsman, all the while knowing that the bear was still there somewhere.

I’m writing this now, so you know I made it out alive. Eventually, I even went back to fishing and caught some more brook trout too.

I’d have a lot to tell Ann that night.

I’d found fish in the wilderness, and I had not been eaten by the bear.

Congratulations Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your practice?

Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road.

And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued.

How did you react to the news of winning both these titles?

To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm.

As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment?

After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists.

I feel so fortunate to be able to address

both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service.

You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – what is it? And what DR. TAYLOR does “MOHS” stand for?

Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers.

As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor.

Is there anything else that you would like to share?

I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. They care and it shows!

Milton stops West Forsyth late, opens region play with victory

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — The mantra for Milton this season has been “own the red zone.” Entering their region opening game against West Forsyth, Milton had allowed just five touchdowns on 12 trips by opponents inside their 20.

Friday night, they added another scoreless trip when the Eagles stopped a late West Forsyth drive within the 1-yard line to open Region 5-AAAAAAA play with a win.

Milton led 17-14 midway through the fourth quarter after a Hayden Hairston field goal. West Forsyth had multiple sustained drives throughout the game, and needed a score to go ahead late or potentially force overtime. The Wolverines drove into the red zone.

With the game on the line, West lined up for a fourth-and-goal from the

3-yard line with under three minutes remaining. Quarterback Zachary Burns took the shotgun snap and rolled to his right, hoping to draw Milton’s defenders before passing back to his left to a waiting Garrett Woodall.

Woodall brought in the reception but had to reach low for the pass and fell to the turf before reaching the end zone. The ball went back to Milton on downs.

In the shadow of their own end zone, Milton rushed for a first down and ran out the clock.

It was a win on the back of “owning” the red zone.

“We used every bit of field but one inch,” Milton head coach Adam Clack said. “They threw the kitchen sink at us. From different sets, and option attack that came out of nowhere and wildcat packages. When you get down in the red zone you see that stuff come out. But we kept making them play another down.”

Clack said the win wasn’t pretty.

Milton’s offense had multiple three and outs in a game where they only had seven possessions. The Eagles’ defense also struggled to get off the field. But he said he was still pleased with the fight and resilience his team showed.

“Sometimes it’s not about winning pretty,” he said. “It’s about being tough enough to stick it out for 48 minutes.”

Alpharetta remains at the top with win over Greyhounds MARIETTA, Ga. — It didn’t look like the most promising start for Region 7-AAAAAA leaders Alpharetta. Facing Pope (2-4, 2-2) on the road, the Greyhounds needed just seven plays to find the end zone on the opening drive of the game.

Then, on Alpharetta’s ensuing possession, the Raiders went three and out. Alpharetta’s offense also stalled on its second drive and the score remained 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.

“It seems like every time we play an away game we have an interesting start,” Alpharetta head coach Jacob Nichols said. “We knew they were going to come out and hit us in the mouth, and they did.”

But then the Raiders got a spark, the first that led them to a 37-14 region win.

Alpharetta’s Dylan Schorr pinned Pope on their own 1-yard line with a punt. Three plays later, Alpharetta forced a safety as Pope threw a pass into the flat in the end zone.

Alpharetta (5-1, 4-0) then put together a quick, five-play drive capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Downing to Spencer Gaddis.

Alpharetta’s defense then found its rhythm, disrupting Pope’s shift-heavy offense, setting up a punt and another touchdown pass from Downing to Gaddis to extend the Raiders’ lead to 16-6.

“Our defense responded, and our offense got some big plays and it turned out in our favor,” Nichols said.

In the second half, Alpharetta’s stout defensive play continued while their offense racked up yards and points.

Nolan Edmonds, who missed multiple games earlier this season with an injury, opened the second half scoring with a 53-yard touchdown rush.

Edmonds and Kevin Watkins shared carries throughout the night.

“It definitely makes us a little more potent having [Edmonds] back,” Nichols said.

Having Watkins and Edmonds will make the Raiders’ a rushing threat, he added.

“Kevin did a great job when Edmonds couldn’t go and definitely earned his right to be on the field,” he said. “Edmonds being a senior leader, he’s been earning it for a long time.”

The Raiders will host Johns Creek (2-5, 2-3) Friday in a matchup that has resulted in two-straight years of heartbreaking losses for Alpharetta.

“It’s one that we want to win because they have gotten the best of us the last two years,” Nichols said. “We’ll work hard this week, it’ll be nice to be home, and hopefully we can take care of business.”

Cambridge earns 2nd win of season Class A-Private

Whitefield Academy 31, Fellowship Christian 24 Fellowship’s loss to Whitefield Friday night wasn’t as devastating as their last-second loss to Walker last week, but it was another distressing outcome that came late in the game.

Fellowship led 24-10 early in the fourth quarter, but Whitefield cut the lead to a single score with a 70-yard touchdown pass just a few minutes later.

Whitefield then recovered an onside kick and later scored to tie the game at 24-24.

On Fellowship’s ensuing drive, a holding call negated a long touchdown pass and the Paladins were eventually forced to punt.

With six minutes remaining, Whitefield got another long scoring play, a 40-yard rush, to take the lead and hold on for the win.

Fellowship’s two straight region losses are its first since 2014.

Class 6A Cambridge 38, Dunwoody 16 After starting the season 0-5, Cambridge has now put together a win streak after their lopsided victory over Dunwoody Friday night.

Cambridge jumped out to a 21-3 lead with scores from Matt McCree and two touchdown throws from Hogan Dykes.

The Bears’ Ty Wald and McCree scored in the second half with Victor Valentine adding a field goal.

Cambridge’s 38 points was its highest total of the season.

Chattahoochee 38, Johns Creek 31 Chattahoochee ended their twogame skid against Johns Creek and improved to 4-1 in region play with a close win over the Gladiators Friday night.

Hooch led 22-17 after a back and forth first half, but Johns Creek would take the lead on a 28-yard pass from Zach Gibson to Zach Williams. Hooch responded with a 4-yard touchdown rush from Andrew Thomas on its ensuing drive.

But Johns Creek was back on top just over a minute later when Gibson connected with Nate Hope for a 68-yard touchdown to put Johns Creek on top, 31-30.

Chattahoochee reclaimed the lead early in the fourth with a passing score from Jack Corrigan to Marcus Stephen.

Johns Creek had a drive to potentially force overtime late in the fourth, but a turnover on downs allowed Hooch to secure the win.

Centennial 48, Northview 17 Centennial’s Max Brosmer had another standout performance for the Knights in their fourth-straight region win.

Brosmer went 13-18 passing for 320 yards with three touchdowns and added 29 yards rushing.

The Knights’ Emeka Nwanze rushed for 103 yards.

Northview took an early 7-0 lead, but Centennial scored 20 unanswered points and led 27-10 at the half.

Two big plays from Centennial — a 60-yard touchdown pass to Cal Dickie and 80-yard scoring rush from Nwanze — allowed the Knights to cruise to the win in the fourth quarter.

Class 7A South Forsyth 38, Lambert 0 In perhaps Forsyth’s most heated rivalry, South Forsyth remained unbeaten with a convincing shutout win over Lambert Friday night.

Jared Honey scored a 61-yard rushing touchdown in the opening minutes and the War Eagles kept their foot on the gas the remainder of the game.

South scored 17 points in the second quarter and added 14 in the third to power their way to a win in both team’s region opener.

Quarterback Cal Morris connected with Jaylen Pearson for two touchdowns in the win.

Lambert’s shutout loss was its first since 2011.

Roswell 36, Lassiter 30 (OT) Roswell captured its 15th straight region victory by outlasting Lassiter Friday night. Both of Roswell’s wins this season have come in overtime.

The Hornets opened a 23-0 lead in the first half, but Lassiter fought back to tie the game at 30-30 late in the fourth.

Lassiter looked poised to capture the win by recovering a blocked punt at Roswell’s 15-yard line with under 20 seconds remaining. However, their field

goal attempt was missed.

Lassiter opened overtime on offense but again failed to make a field goal.

Roswell’s Kamonty Jett secured the win with a touchdown rush for the Hornets. Roswell rushed for nearly 400 yards in the win.

North Forsyth 58, Forsyth Central 0 North Forsyth put on another offensive display Friday night, blasting Forsyth Central to open Region 5-AAAAAA play with a win.

The Raiders got five touchdowns from Bryson Trigg in the first half and led 41-0 at the break.

North’s defense held the Bulldogs to under 100 total yards of offense and forced five turnovers.

Class 4A Blessed Trinity 50, White Co. 14 Blessed Trinity used a strong second half to improve to 5-0 all-time in Region 7-AAAA. Early turnovers from both teams resulted in plenty of scoring in the first half, but BT would be the only team to find the scoreboard in the second.

BT rushed for 245 yards in the win and recovered three White County fumbles.

Mount Pisgah 49, St. Francis 27 Mount Pisgah scored over 45 points for the fourth consecutive game and remained unbeaten in region play with a win over St. Francis Friday night.

St. Francis scored a touchdown on their opening possession for the second straight game, but Mount Pisgah put up 21 unanswered points to regain the lead for good.

St. Francis trailed by 28-20 early in the third, but Pisgah scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter and hung on for the win.

Patriots’ quarterback Jacob Cendoya had four total touchdowns in the win and Kai Williams rushed for two scores.

King’s Ridge 14, Pinecrest Academy 7 King’s Ridge snapped a four-game losing streak and earned their first win over Pinecrest since 2013 Friday night.

The Tigers trailed early after Micky Mangan connected with Michael Birozes for a 90-yard touchdown early in the first quarter.

Pinecrest held their slim 7-0 lead until late in the first half. The Tigers would tie the game with a touchdown reception from Hayden Milling in the final minute of the second quarter.

In the low-scoring affair, the final score of the game came from Tigers’ quarterback Casey Flanigan who rushed in from 1 yard out in the third quarter.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Volleyball area tournaments commenced Thursday night with two local teams earning area championships and 13 teams securing playoff berths. The state playoffs will begin next week.

Area 4-AAAAAAA After entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed, Roswell dispatched Woodstock in the first round in four sets to earn its second straight playoff appearance. But after the Woodstock win, the Hornets had perhaps the toughest draw in the state in the second round.

Roswell faced Walton, the two-time defending state champions in the GHSA’s highest classification in the second round. Roswell was swept in three sets.

In the third place game, Roswell fell to Lassiter in four sets.

Roswell fell to Mill Creek in the first round of the state playoffs last year.

season area play, but in the final match of the area tournament, the Lady Raiders fell short against Lambert.

With the area championship match tied 2-2, Lambert got off to a quick lead in the decisive fifth set and held on for a 15-9, title-clinching win.

South Forsyth downed Milton in the opening match of the tournament, a must-win to secure a playoff berth for the Lady War Eagles, the defending area champs.

In the second round, South dropped three straight sets to North, but defeated West Forsyth in four sets in the third place match.

Area 7-AAAAAA Defending area champions Alpharetta made it two-straight titles on Thursday night after downing Johns Creek in a battle of two of the top programs in Class 6A in the area title match.

The Lady Raiders dominated North Atlanta and Centennial to open the tournament before facing Johns Creek in the third round, the first meeting of the teams in the tournament. After dropping the first set 25-22, Alpharetta won 25-16 and 25-20 to advance to the finals where they would beat Johns Creek once again.

Johns Creek opened the tournament with two wins against Chattahoochee and Pope before their first loss to Alpharetta relegated them to the loser’s bracket. After beating Pope again in two sets, the Lady Gladiators advanced to

the finals and secured the No. 2 seed from the area.

After falling to Johns Creek to open the tournament, Chattahoochee won three straight matches, but fell to Pope to earn the No. 4 seed.

The Lady Cougars earned a playoff berth after failing to make the playoffs last season for the first time in four seasons.

Five teams make the playoffs from the area, and the final playoff berth was decided between Cambridge and Centennial.

After making the quarterfinals in the state playoffs the last two seasons, Cambridge fell to Centennial in two sets to be locked out of the playoffs.

Centennial’s playoff berth is its first since 2013.

Area 7-AAAA Though Blessed Trinity is one of the most dominant programs in the state, having won the state championship the past three years and six in total, they often do so after failing to earn an area championship. This year was no different.

In a rematch of last year’s area championship match, Blessed Trinity and Marist met once again for the area title Thursday night, but this year the Lady Titans fell short.

Marist downed BT in four sets (2325, 25-10, 25-14, 25-20) to earn the area crown.

The Lady Knights would fall in four sets, but earned a home playoff match for the first time in program history.

Fellowship Christian beat St. Francis in the second round of the tournament, but would drop their second match to the Lady Knights in the semifinals.

The Lady Paladins earned their fourth straight playoff appearance and will enter the state tournament as the No. 3 seed from Area 6-A. After opening the tournament with a win over Whitefield Academy, Mount Pisgah fell to Walker in the second round. The Lady Patriots then beat Pinecrest Academy in their next match to secure the final playoff berth from the area.
