ALPHARETTA, Ga. — An Atlanta man pulled over for traveling down Ga. 400 at over 150 miles per hour was later arrested for DUI. Around 3 a.m. on Nov. 12, an Alpharetta police officer was passed by a McLaren 720S traveling at a high rate of speed. The McLaren was originally clocked at 109 mph. After the officer activated his lights and siren, the car continued to accelerate.

The driver failed to maintain lane and was weaving around traffic according to the officer’s report. The car’s speed varied from 115 to 155 mph. The officer followed the

When the officer asked the driver why he did not pull over, he responded that he did not hear the siren or see the emergency lights. The officer noticed an odor of alcohol and the man admitted to drinking three “shots” of champagne.

During the field sobriety test, the man exhibited multiple clues of impairment and refused a breath test according to the report.

Tow truck driver gets stuck under car FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A tow truck driver became trapped under a car Nov. 11 in the Lakeland Plaza parking lot.

The car’s owner called the tow truck company to help her after she was having issues with her Jaguar and couldn’t put it in drive. The 29-year-old tow truck driver came to put the car on his truck and got onto the ground to look under the car, but wasn’t trapped at the time. The driver said she left to talk to a friend of hers who was nearby.

When she came back, she saw a man in a doctor’s coat trying to get the tow truck driver out from under the car. After several people attempted to get the car off the man, they started to render aide to the driver until EMTs arrived. The man in the doctor’s coat said he saw the man pinned down under the car and called 911. He then tried to lift the car off the man’s chest. He didn’t know how the man got stuck under the car and no one else seemed to know because no one was around when it oc-

Corneal Transplant: Penetrating Keratoplasty (Part 1 of 2)

By Priyal Gadani, O.D., F.A.A.O. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped outermost tissue of the eye, which is sometimes referred to as the window to the eye. The cornea focuses light through the lens onto the retina. A diseased or injured cornea can cause significant decreased vision, pain, or discomfort. Oftentimes, these issues may be remedied by medication eye drops, contact lenses, or other more conservative procedures, Priyal Gadani, but if the cornea still does not respond, O.D., F.A.A.O. a corneal transplant may be required. A corneal transplant is a surgical procedure in which damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue (the graft).

It may restore vision, reduce pain, and improve the appearance of the damaged or diseased tissue.

A number of conditions may be treated with a corneal transplant, including keratoconus (a disease process that causes the cornea to thin and bulge), Fuchs’ dystrophy (an inherited disease which causes corneal swelling and clouding), corneal scarring due to injury or infections such as herpes simplex or herpes zoster (shingles), corneal ulcers, or complications from previous eye surgeries.

Penetrating Keratoplasty: When the entire cornea is replaced, it is known as a penetrating keratoplasty and when only part of the cornea is replaced, it is known as lamellar keratoplasty. Keratoplasty is another term for surgery of the cornea. Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) involves a complete transplant of the cornea, and may be a better treatment option for patients with severe corneal disease. PK is also called a “full thickness” corneal transplant, meaning the entire cornea is removed and replaced with a donor cornea.

Finding a donor cornea: Corneal tissue used in corneal transplants come from recently deceased donors who have no history of known diseases or other factors that would affect the chance of success of the donated tissue or health of the recipient. Donors can be of any age.

The procedure and post-op care: Penetrating keratoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning that patients can go home the same day as their surgery. Before beginning the PK procedure, a local or general anesthesia is administered. The corneal surgeon uses a trephine, or circular cutting device, to cut the donor corneal tissue the exact size and shape needed. A second trephine is used to remove a circular portion of the patient’s cornea, after which the donor tissue is positioned and sewn into place. Antibiotic drops are applied and the eye is covered with a protective shield at the end of the procedure. The patient will return the next day for a post-operative appointment, and will use several medication eye drops to help prevent infection and inflammation. The vision will be blurry during the recovery process, and it may take several months for the eye to heal and vision to improve.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — John Ray has had a busy week.

The president of the Alpharetta Business Association says he has been putting out fires, trying to quiet some of the confusion over whether the popular Alpharetta Downtown Farmers Market is being forced to find a new home.

That won’t happen, Ray said.

The furor arose recently when developer Mayfair Street Partners proposed construction of a 119-room boutique hotel on Milton Avenue, just west of Main Street.

Original plans for the Cotton House Hotel sought city approval to abandon a portion of Old Canton Street where the market draws hundreds of visitors to downtown each Saturday from April through October.

When the developers appeared before the City Council Nov. 13 for construction approval, however, they removed the request to close Old Canton.

Not only that, they consented to enter into a formal agreement with the city to accommodate street events, such as the farmers market and the Brew Moon Festival, which are held on Milton Avenue.

Mayfair partner Jason Joseph said his company is committed to working with the city to ensure the events can operate in their current venues.

At that same meeting, Ray told council members that there was never any discussion in his organization to move the farmers market to another location. All he heard were rumors.

After the vote by the council, he said he felt reassured.

Brides left at altar without a dress State investigating Alpharetta bridal shop

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Georgia Attorney General’s Office is investigating complaints by customers of an Alpharetta bridal shop who say they lost thousands of dollars in deposits when the business suddenly closed its doors more than a month ago.

A spokesman for the agency’s Consumer Protection Unit said he could not comment on a pending case but confirmed the office has opened a preliminary investigation into Atlanta Bride Couture, which until recently operated at 20 N. Main Street.

The matter came up earlier this month when a Milton woman notified Alpharetta Police that she had ordered a dress for $1,444 in April of 2016 and that it was supposed to be delivered to the shop in November.

When the woman drove by the shop in October, she found it closed. The woman told police she knew of at least a dozen other women who were waiting for dresses they had ordered from the shop.

Another bride-to-be said she paid $2,000 for a wedding dress in January but never received delivery. After repeated calls to the store through the summer, she was told to come back in October. But in October she found the business’ doors closed.

One woman reported seeing people loading up the inventory on a late October evening.

Atlanta Bride Couture was registered as a business in March 2011.

The Secretary of State’s Office lists the business’ officers as William and Sara Mills Parry of Alpharetta.

Attempts to reach the Parrys were not successful, but their residence, listed on corporate papers filed with the state, 1097 Pine Grove Drive, is listed for sale. Calls to the store are referred to voicemail.

Atlanta Bride Couture has an “A” rating from the Better Business Bureau and has drawn only a single complaint over the past three years. No complaints have been filed in the past year.

The Consumer Protection Unit of the Attorney General’s Office enforces the Fair Businesses Practice Act, a civil law designed to protect consumers from unfair or deceptive transactions or misrepresentations.

CONSUMER TIPS When dealing with businesses that require up-front deposits, the Consumer Protection Unit of the Georgia Attorney General’s Office offers the following advice: • Check the reputation of the business.

• Keep in contact with the business.

• Use a credit card for purchases because they often provide some protections on consumer purchases.

Consumers who feel they have been misled, should contact the agency at http://consumer.georgia.gov/consumer-services

The agency can impose penalties and has authority to issue subpoenas for its investigation in an effort to satisfy victims of unfair business practices.

On the other hand, if the business files for bankruptcy, customers with a grievance would have to pursue their claims in civil court.

This is not the year’s first case involving a sudden closure in the bridal apparel industry.

In July, longtime national retailer Alfred Angelo filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and closed some 60 stores. The company also left independent stores in the dark about the Alfred Angelo dresses they had ordered for local customers.

Following its bankruptcy filing, that company began tracking customer records to fulfill earlier obligations, but announced later it was discontinuing that effort.

Sorry to be ungrateful…

Well some people will think I’m crazy, but I’m a not afraid to admit: I’m not a big fan of Thanksgiving, never have been.

The endless day of cooking and cleaning for a meal that lasts about 30 minutes does not get me all excited. Plus, half the SUZANNE PACEY items cooked (mostly vegePublisher Northside Woman suzanne@northsidewoman.com tables) I don’t even like!

One year, we decided to visit family in Florida. All I wanted to do was sit at the beach. But I spent most of the vacation either at the grocery story, cooking or cleaning…not at the beach. Instead of perspiring in the hot sun, I was sweating in a hot kitchen!

The next year I had family come to my house (small group of 20). Five of them were

an hour and half late for dinner and left in the middle of dinner to hit the Black Friday sales, only to return with Tupperware to put leftovers in after I had already cleaned up and put everything away. Then they requested I serve them dessert!

Another year, I thought it would be great to go to the mountains and stay at a resort that has one of those giant Thanksgiving buffets. Well that was a bust. The food was awful, way too many different smells in one room and way too many people.

No idea what I’ll do this year for the holiday. My newly married (Nov 3rd) daughter wants me to come to her house in Virginia and cook her turkey for her…not sure that’s in the plan. No offense to her. She has a really cute house, but her oven just doesn’t really work like mine.

I do love leftover turkey sandwiches, though. Those are the best!

Eleven years ago I walked into Alpharetta High School for the first time, scared but excited to start the new chapter in my life.

And just last week, I walked back through the same front doors into the same hallways, again scared but excited. Except this time I was playing principal for the day.

I signed up weeks ago to participate in the Principal and Teachers for the Day program KATHLEEN STURGEON and chose my alma mater. I wanted to see how things changed and what stayed the same, and I Editor kathleen@appenmediagroup.com was not disappointed.

Growing up, I knew I was lucky to live in Alpharetta. Our community is great and our schools are even better.

Besides me, 15 other community members, including Alpharetta City Council members, took time to volunteer to learn more about the school and hopefully build connections to help the students.

After I graduated and went to the University of West Georgia, I quickly realized just how blessed we are here because many of my classmates there were not as prepared as I was for college.

So when I got the chance to come back and view things from the other side as principal, I grabbed the opportunity.

Not too much has changed because honestly a high school is a high school no matter what decade it’s in.

Cottage School teachers honored with statewide awards

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Excellent teachers are the backbone of any good school and education, and The Cottage School recently received recognition for not just one, but two teachers as among the best in the state. Lynn Bosworth and Jennifer Sudbury were honored this fall as Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Independent Schools Association during its annual conference.

All of the private schools in Georgia can send nominees each year for the award. And this year, the association chose from over 3,200 schools, according to The Cottage School spokesperson Sandy McKinney.

For The Cottage School, which provides educational programs for students with learning differences, the distinction is a profound honor, McKinney said.

Bosworth is a middle school teacher and reading specialist at The Cottage School. She also teaches study skills. Sudbury is a high school teacher and science department head who teaches subjects such as chemistry, forensic science and oceanography.

When she’s not teaching, Sudbury also helps the seniors figure out their post-secondary plans, guide student council and put together the yearbook.

Neither instructor had received such recognition previously.

“It was a total shock,” Bosworth said. “It was fun, though, because the questions that you’re asked as part of the process you’re not asked on a regular

Bosworth, who used to work at Barnes and Noble, said she was drawn to teaching after applying to Teach for America. As part of the program, she worked as a special education teacher and found that her calling was working with children with learning differences. The Cottage School was her first choice.

Sudbury’s younger brother had previously attended The Cottage School, during which Sudbury helped tutor him. Applying to teach at the school was a natural progression for her, Sudbury said.

“It seems like I’ve always tutored or taught kids with some sort of learning challenge, whether it’s an actual learning disability or a tough home situation,” Sudbury said. “I just connect with those kids who might need a little extra help.”

Bosworth and Sudbury live an hour away from The Cottage School, but they both agreed that the drive is more than worth it.

“Everything that we do here is, I think, important,” Bosworth said. “We have kids who come to us for all kinds of reasons – from the kids who were bullied to the ones who have dyslexia or some other learning difference… And what’s outstanding to me is that The Cottage School teaches us how to bring out our strengths to do our best by the students. We have an incredible team. One person can’t just accept the award – it’s everybody, including the students.”

“We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without all of the support that we have here,” Sudbury added.

“There are a lot of schools where you wouldn’t have this kind of support, so you couldn’t be as successful as you are as a teacher.”

Roswell’s annual ‘The Nutcracker’ performance kicks off Shows set for Nov. 24-Dec. 3; some performances sold out

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — It’s once again time for sugarplum fairies and marching toy soldiers. Roswell Dance Theatre is putting on their 29th annual performance of “The Nutcracker,” directed by Nancy Tolbert Yilmaz and Mary Lynn Taylor.

“The performance this year is bigger and better than ever,” Tolbert Yilmaz said. “We’ve added some new scenes… We have 12 shows this season, some of which have already sold out.”

Started in 1988 and now with 350 performers, this holiday tradition is one of the largest and oldest in North Fulton. Tolbert Yilmaz’s grandmother, Ena Tilmaz, was the original Grandmother in the first performance. They have come a long way since that inaugural show.

“That very first year, we had very limited costumes,” Tolbert Yilmaz said. “My daughter, who dances professionally now in New York, was one of the original cast members in the 1988 production.

She wore her Christmas dress for her role. Now, we have professionally made costumes. One of the tutus this year, just the tutu, is $800.”

The Sugarplum tutu, which is new this year, is handmade with over 400 Swarovski crystals sown into the fabric. Each of the tutus on stage has over nine layers of fabric and over 230 hand-tied knots to

year’s show. Each cast member is outfitted with 4-5 pieces for their costumes.

More than 350 people have been cast for this year’s show. The average age for the performers is 12, while the youngest performer is 10 months old and will play the part of the baby. She is the daughter of one of the Roswell Dance Theatre alumni.

This year’s shows include guest dancers who have performed in venues around the world and have appeared in movies. Rick Twombley, one guest male dancer, has performed in Tokyo Disney, Cirque Du Soleil and has appeared in “The Hunger Games” and “The Getaway.” Guest dancers Mark Burns, Robert Gosnell and Roscoe Sales have likewise danced with companies in Italy, Harlem and Brooklyn.

“What makes our performance different is community support,” Tolbert Yilmaz said. “We have a lot of people not only in our show but patrons who we know exactly where they’re going to be sitting. Certain ones are always there because it’s a tradition. It’s a part of Roswell.”

With the help of Hembree family descendants and the Roswell Historical Society, Peachland Homes is bringing six new houses on the original Hembree family homestead that will complement the adjacent Hembree Historic Preservation Site.

The house, which dates back to 1835, remained in the Hembree family’s possession for eight generations. In 2007, Carmen Ford, a Hembree descendant, donated the house to the Roswell Historical Society, along with a standalone kitchen and two log corn cribs.

Ty White and his company Peachland Homes has been coordinating with the Roswell Historical Society on the new development.

“We’ve been working very closely with them to make sure that what we’re doing will complement what they’re doing with the house,” White said.

“Their goal is to make it more of an educational showpiece so people can come out and see how people lived in the 1840s.”

Each of the six houses will boast their own unique designs that will marry the charms of the 1830s aesthetic with the convenience of modern life.

The development will have a private road for the homes as well as a second road for direct access to the preservation site. Peachland Homes will also help provide running water and sewer to the Hembree Historic Preservation Site. White and his team have built more than 1,000 luxury homes throughout Atlanta.

“We wanted to piggyback off of the historic nature of the property,” White said. “It’s the oldest home in Roswell.

We wanted to build on that and the overall character of Roswell.”

The homes are designed for a pastoral setting, with big lots and a farm feel. Even though each of the houses will have different plans, they will all feature a common historical farm style.

Each lot is about three quarters of an acre, and the homes will take up about 4,000-5,000 square feet. The majority of the houses will be two stories.

“We’re blending old and new,” White said. “The old works with the pasture look. They will be spread out a bit more, which look more like what it used to look like when we had room.

Often the homes now are very compact,

because we just don’t have a lot of land to build on. And when it was time to add a working kitchen or a second bedroom, it was added on and the house would spread out. So architecturally, it will mimic those same things.”

To achieve that look, the outside will emphasize space and natural light, with large porches and multiple windows.

Garages, as a more modern amenity, will have a deemphasized appearance.

“We want people to feel like they almost have to look twice,” White said.

“That they’ll wonder, ‘was that one of the older homes that was updated?’”

On the inside, however, White said the houses will have all the modern conveniences and looks. They will feature open floorplans that focus on the kitchen and living rooms and gathering spaces, for example.

And some of the building materials, such as reclaimed wood, used throughout the houses will help tie together the two eras.

“The interior will be how we live today, but the exterior will be how we used to live,” White said. “What you feel on the outside will carry through to the inside, even though it’s going to have all the bells and whistles.”

Construction on the first two homes has already started, and the team plans to complete them in May 2018. The rest should be complete by the end of 2018, White said.

Georgia economy moderating after good 2016 Growth rates slowing but still remain robust

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA – Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Georgia State University Economic Forecasting Center, sees the economy cooling somewhat after a really good 2016, but with the exception of manufacturing jobs, job growth has been good this year and trends well into 2018.

Nearly 25 percent of all job growth in Georgia and metro Atlanta falls in what the forecast calls “premium” jobs – high-paying – but after a high in 2016 will be moderating through 2019. Georgia is on track to create 87,800 jobs in DHAWAN 2017.

But that will slip to 70,400 in 2018 and to 65,000 new jobs in 2019. Not surprisingly the lion’s share of job growth, around 75 percent, will occur in the greater Atlanta region.

Meanwhile, nationally, Dhawan compares Congress’ tax cuts with an opening gambit in chess.

The gambit is the sacrifice of a piece (tax cuts) for a greater advantage later on.

Congress (at least the Republican majority) is banking on giving the middle class tax relief in the short run – thus cuts do expire unless renewed.

Meanwhile big business and Wall Street can see $1.4 trillion in tax savings 10 years down the road.

Will the tax cuts create the capital to fuel the kind of GDP growth the United States has not seen since the Kennedy-Johnson era? The GOP majority says yes. But the trickle-down growth policies of Reaganomics in the 1980s never materialized.

Dhawan said he thinks in the end there will be tax cuts for the middle class in the first quarter of 2018 – it is an election year after all. But Congress – read the Senate – will have to back away from some or most of the corporate giveaways as its razor-thin majority

cannot withstand more than two defections.

And given Alabama’s soap opera Senate election, that once golden Red State seat in the Senate up for election could be lost reducing its majority to one.

With elections coming up, Senate Republicans may well decide it is better to live and fight another day for Wall Street.

“It will end up being a tax cut for the middle class,” Dhawan said.

Internationally, the picture is murkier. Speaking on that issue was guest speaker Stuart McIntosh, executive director of Group of 30, an international financial think tank comprised of senior banking, financial and academic figures.

He noted that history tells us when there is a global economy, there is economic stability in the world. That was evidenced by the Roman Empire as a time of relative economic and social stability. And when it fell, there were hundreds of years of economic chaos known as the Dark Ages.

With first Britain and then America leading what McIntosh called the globalization of a world economy there has been relatively stable and continuous economic growth.

What has given rise to concern is President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policy which suggests America is retreating from leadership of the global economy which clouds the future a great deal.

As Trump disassociates the U.S. from trade and environmental agreements to renegotiate “better deals” for America, it creates a leadership vacuum for the rest of the world.

“If America steps out of the role of leading the world economy, there is a very short list of who could step in to assume that role,” McIntosh said.

He did not say China, but the list gets short indeed if it is taken away. McIntosh pointed out that upon the U.S. stepping out of the multi-lateral Asian trade treaties, it was China that has taken the lead role to negotiate pan Asian deals without the U.S.

For atypical moles, what’s the typical treatment?

By Dr. Brent Taylor Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta A changing mole is a common complaint that leads a patient to a dermatologist. And it’s also one of the most important issues that a patient can have because a changing mole could be a melanoma.

Melanoma is the most deadly common form of skin cancer and can spread even when it is the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. That is why dermatologists are so focused on catching melanoma early. If a skin cancer has not yet spread, then a simple surgery and a few stitches are often sufficient to provide a complete cure. If a cancer has spread, then lymph node biopsies, radiation, chemotherapy and other measures are sometimes necessary to try to save someone’s life.

A dermatologist can help determine if a growth requires a biopsy. In general, a biopsy is a procedure intended to sample (not eliminate) a growth. A biopsied specimen is submitted to a pathologist who will determine if the growth is clearly benign, malignant, or somewhere in between.

For atypical moles, pathologists typically grade how abnormal the mole is by grading them – mild, moderate or severe. This sounds simple, but there exists tremendous variation in how dermatologists manage moles that are assigned these grades. Some dermatologists watch almost all abnormal moles. Some dermatologists recommend cutting out (excising) almost all abnormal moles. Who is right, and why is there variation?

Historically, some dermatologists believed that all atypical moles were precancerous. Such moles were (and often still are) called “dysplastic” nevi, although some dermatologists favor labeling them Clark’s nevi to avoid confusion over malignant potential.

The term “dysplastic” connotes a tendency towards becoming a cancer.

However, research now supports that many so-called dysplastic nevi will never amount to anything and are not “pre-cancers.” There is a pattern of growth that some healthy moles can take that can make them look a bit disorderly, but for many moles “dysplastic” is a misnomer.

As a result, a debate exists in the dermatology community over whether dysplastic nevi are precancers and whether they should be excised. A multitude of studies have followed patients whose dsyplastic nevi were excised versus observed. From these studies, we

know that people who have dozens of dysplastic nevi still have a very high chance of developing melanoma even if they have every single mole on their bodies removed. We also know that removing mildly atypical nevi TAYLOR is generally not necessary and does not seem to decrease one’s chance of developing melanoma.

What about moderate and severely atypical nevi? Mounting evidence now suggests that nevi with a grade of “moderate” probably also do not have to be removed and can be safely observed.

Some studies have even suggested similar observation for severely atypical nevi, but the norm for them continues to be excision.

There are exceptions to the above rules: For some moderately atypical nevi, a pathologist may issue a recommendation that might read, “re-excision is recommended to ensure complete removal of this lesion.” This is pathologists’ way of signaling that the pathologist is still uncomfortable enough with the microscopic appearance that the mole should be removed. Alternatively, the mole might be graded as moderate atypia, but the dermatologist may have noted that clinically the mole looked severely atypical. Clinical impressions matter, and a mole that is moderately abnormal under the microscope but severely abnormal to the naked eye would also likely warrant complete removal.

Patient factors such as immunosuppression, a history of melanoma, etc., all also might play a factor.

However, in a world where profits sometimes drives people’s actions, patients are wise to be informed and be their own advocates. Unfortunately, multiple mildly or moderately atypical nevi are too often removed. Based on current evidence, many of these “dysplastic” nevi in all likelihood could have been safely left in place. Patient sometimes receive a few or, sadly, many scars unnecessarily. No dermatologist wants to leave in place a mole that becomes a melanoma, but neither should we subject patients to procedures and scars unnecessarily. By agreeing on regular skin exams, partnering with our patients to be vigilant for changing growths, and practicing evidence-based medicine, dermatologists can often safely leave mildly and moderately atypical nevi in place. Have A Sense of Humor While Alzheimer’s and dementia are serious, as a family member or friend, keeping a sense of humor makes a big difference. Alpharetta makes history with win over Douglas County

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — This year’s Alpharetta squad has accomplished what no other team in program history has done — earn a quarterfinals berth in the state playoffs. The Raiders advanced beyond the second round for the first time Friday night with an exciting 24-21 win over Douglas County at home.

“I’ve been here for nine years,” head coach Jacob Nichols said. “I’ve seen everything from the 3-7 seasons to the first playoffs to the first region championship. This is definitely at the top of my list. It’s something that this school and these boys will remember for a long, long time.”

The Raiders got off to a swift start by scoring on their opening three drives of the game. But big plays from the Tigers and their defense against Alpharetta’s rushing game kept the contest close.

Both teams incurred costly penalties that negated long gains or scores.

In an especially chippy second half, two Douglas County players and an Alpharetta player were ejected following a scrum on the Raiders’ sideline.

Even with the penalties and missed opportunities, Alpharetta’s defense shut down a trio of talented Tigers’ rushers.

Jack Stanton, Nick Markus, Deplores Schletty and Reid Schultz were staples in Douglas County’s backfield throughout the night, forcing errant passes with pressure. Markus and Stanton each had sacks.

“We knew they have a stable of running backs and our guys played awesome,” Nichols said. “If we can continue to do that and continue to have our bases covered we’re going to be in good shape.”

Alpharetta’s offense was forced to rely on its passing game when Nolan Edmonds and Kevin Watkins were held to minimal yardage by the Tigers’ sizeable and quick defensive line.

That game plan was to let quarterback Matthew Downing and his receivers lead the charge.

Downing connected with Spencer Gaddis for a touchdown on the Raiders’ opening drive of the game. He hit Marcus Hill for a 50-yard score early in the second quarter to give the Raiders a 17-0 lead.

Hill would also bring in the final score of the game on a nifty double move in the end zone late in the third quarter.

Receivers Luke Estes, Michael Marbaugh and Robbie Ruppel added receptions throughout the game.

Though Downing had an impressive night, he also had two interceptions. Nichols blamed himself for the first, stating he put Downing in a tough position. The second, which was returned 30 yards for a touchdown to give Douglas County its only lead of the game in the third quarter, was tipped.

But on Alpharetta’s subsequent drive, Downing looked poised and connected with multiple receivers, driving

lined up for a final Hail Mary attempt, but their quarterback was flushed out and pressured by Alpharetta defenders.

His pass barely left his hands as he was being taken down, a fitting end to a stout defensive performance from the Raiders.

Their defense may be without two key players next week. All-American safety Jaycee Horn went down with an injury in the third quarter and never returned. Defensive lineman Mustafa Nassar also left the game with an apparent leg injury.

On Horn’s injury, Nichols said the team is “staying positive.”

“It’s something that has nagged him for a while so we’re hoping it’s something he can rehab from and get back,” he said. “But we’re going to plug in some guys and do whatever it takes.”

And they’ll do whatever it takes in the formerly unchartered territory of the quarterfinals.

Blessed Trinity eliminates twotime defending state champs

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — It would be difficult to blame Blessed Trinity for being a bit intimidated entering their second-round matchup with Cartersville Friday night. The Purple Hurricanes are the two-time defending state champions. They had won 41 straight games with a stout defense that surrendered just eight points per game against in-state opponents this year. Not to mention, they have an offense averaging nearly 50 points per game and the nation’s top quarterback recruit in Clemson-commit Trevor Lawrence.

But on Friday night, the Titans looked anything but daunted in their 21-17 win on the road.

“There was not a lot of emotion in the game and that’s one of the characteristics of this football team,” head coach Tim McFarlin said. “They don’t wear it on their sleeves, they go about their business. I like the fact we didn’t spend a lot of energy on high emotions in the early part of the game.”

That focus allowed the Titans to hold Lawrence and Cartersville’s offense to just 226 offensive yards.

“I thought the defensive coaching staff did the best job I’ve seen a coaching staff do in a long time,” McFarlin said. “They found a way to keep Lawrence off balance. He’s everything people say he is, but we were able to make him scramble and hit him. I think that threw him off.”

BT disguised their fronts and coverages throughout the night and continually pressured Lawrence, who went 14-27 for 120 yards with a touchdown.

McFarlin said the Canes had plenty of speed at receiver, but his defensive backs kept them underneath.

BT’s offense compiled 304 yards with quarterback Jake Smith going 7-8 for 95 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Davis and fullback Jake Rudolph combined for seven receptions. Steel Chambers rushed for 107 yards, followed by Elijah Green with 69.

Chambers’ accounted for both of BT’s first half scores, and the Titans held a 14-3 lead at the half.

But as McFarlin predicted, it was going to take a full, four-quarter game to down the Canes.

“I told them if we could keep it close in the fourth, I knew we had a chance,” he said. “ Cartersville opened the half with a touchdown pass before taking their first

lead of the game in the fourth on a 75yard punt return for a touchdown.

Leading 17-13, Cartersville had a chance to make it a two-score game late in the fourth. However, a Canes receiver had the ball punched out near the goal line and J.D. Bertrand recovered for the Titans.

BT drove into Canes territory but was forced to punt with under four minutes remaining. But BT’s defense stood tall and forced a punt.

BT then drove to the Canes’ 26-yard line with under 30 seconds remaining.

Smith rolled to his right in the pocket and found Ryan Davis in the end zone for the go-ahead score with just 12 ticks remaining on the clock. And for the first time since August of 2015, Cartersville was upended.

“Obviously it was a big win for our program,” McFarlin said. “I’m so proud of our kids. We knew it was going to take a tremendous effort, and they played hard all night.”

With the win, BT advances to the quarterfinals for the fifth-straight year.

The last time they failed to reach the third round was in 2012 when they lost to Cartersville, 23-24, in the second round.

The Titans face another top-10 ranked team Friday on the road against Thomson, which fell to the Canes in last year’s 4A state championship.

“We’re a little banged up because it was such a physical game, and the game in Thomson will be the same,” McFarlin said. “Our first focus is to get kids healthy. You have to have some good fortunes with injuries because it’s a long, tough road in the playoffs. But we’ll start working on our game plan and hopefully go out and have another great game next week.”

Centennial makes statement against Mays, falls in shootout

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Centennial certainly played the underdog role Friday night against Mays. And though the Knights fell in an electrifying shootout, head coach Michael Perry said his team made a statement against the No. 3 ranked team in the state.

“We were picked to lose by 24 points to one of the best program in 6A,” he said. “But we sent out a big message that Centennial is right there and is a program to be reckoned with.”

Behind another incredible performance, Centennial’s offense put up 41 points against a Raiders defense that had posted three shutouts and gave up an average of just eight points per game entering Friday night’s matchup.

They hadn’t surrendered more than 28 points all season. Centennial had 28 points in the second quarter.

For the seventh-straight game, the Knights scored over 40 points with quarterback Max Brosmer once again solidifying himself as one of the premier quarterbacks in the state.

passing this season with 35 touchdowns.

“I was so proud of the way Brosmer played,” Perry said. “And he had a lot of talent around him.”

Brosmer hit Blane Mason and Julian Nixon for touchdowns.

In addition to Centennial’s seemingly unstoppable passing game, Perry said Emeka Nwanze had his best game of the season rushing.

It was a back-and-forth affair throughout the night, with neither team holding a lead of more than one score after late in the first quarter. At the half, the score was tied 28-28.

Both teams continued to pound away with the Knights taking the lead late in the third quarter on a Nixon touchdown reception. The PAT would be missed with the Knights’ having to replace kicker Nicky Solomon.

Solomon broke his foot during the game and Perry said that was vital for Mays in the second half.

“We had to squib kick to them and that gave them great field position,” he said.

Just after Nixon’s go-ahead touchdown, Mays returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. The PAT gave them a 42-41 lead with a minute remaining in the third. While their offense had been seemingly unstoppable for three quarters, Mays hunkered down in the fourth to force two turnovers on downs and picked off Bromser.

The Knights were held scoreless in the final frame, allowing Mays to escape with the win. The loss brought the Knights’ season, and their eight-game win streak, to an end.

“I’m really proud of our senior class,” Perry said. “They did something that hadn’t been done in 15 years in winning a playoff game and they got Centennial back on track.”

The seniors led the team to an 8-4 overall record after what was a worrying start to the season with the Knights dropping their opening three games.

“The easy thing at that point would be to throw in the towel,” Perry said.

“But this team was so resilient. We improved each week and kept moving forward. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

Perry and the Knights are also banking that this season is just the beginning for Centennial’s rise to prominence.

“The future of Centennial is bright,” Perry said. “I’m very optimistic about this football program and the kids we have.”

North Fulton Charities feeds hundreds for Thanksgiving

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON, Ga. – For more than 500 families, Thanksgiving came a bit early this year.

After months of collecting donations, North Fulton Community Charities handed out turkeys, three bags of food each and gift cards to grocery stores to families in North Fulton on Nov. 19.

Director of Programs Eden Purdy said the annual event is community-wide because 180 volunteers came the day before to sort through the food donations and bag them. All food and gift cards were donated, including those from food drives at local schools.

For 25 years, Purdy said North Fulton has held holiday events for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

About 10 years ago, Purdy started volunteering and has seen the program grow, becoming better each time.

“The busiest year was during the recession and we had 1,500 families total,” Purdy said. “This helps the folks living in our community who are struggling paycheck to paycheck, working minimum wage. This helps relieve that financial stress and to allow them to celebrate their traditions with their families and not incur any additional financial burden.”

Each year the families are vetted by North Fulton and qualify after they prove their need, which could be showing an eviction letter or notice of utilities being disconnected.

“Things can happen like if their car breaks down and that’s their only mode of transportation and they can’t go to work,” Purdy said. “Then they start

to North Fulton for years to utilize services for herself and her 6-year-old son.

“They always help us out,” Volmy said. “They’re here to help people who need it. I have family members who come, too, because we need it sometimes. It means a lot because North Fulton helps people a lot, especially in this season. I’m thankful they help people.”

Serving people gets Purdy up in the morning and is her passion, she said.

“These are the people who struggle but work hard,” Purdy said. “They are the work force that really make our community thrive. Their struggles are our struggles. All of us know people

either in our families or we have some kind of connection. We can relate to their struggles.”

The holiday program is special for Purdy.

“If we can help people celebrate with their families in their homes and have a holiday meal, and help get the children gifts and toys for Christmas, and not feel a financial stress and burden,” Purdy said. “For most of us the holidays are such a happy time. But for these folks they’re not. They can be filled with so much discouragement and frustration.”
