Lemonade Days festival harmonizes Dunwoody’s past, present and future

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Life was sweet at Brook Run Park for the 24th annual Lemonade Days, running April 17-21.

Lemonade Days, the city’s most popular family event, featured dozens of carnival rides, like the Expo Wheel and Alien Abduction, face-painting and carnival classics, rows of food and beverage vendors, and a weekend slate of center stage performances.

A group of seven students from Pope High School in unincorporated Cobb County said they left in a hurry April 17 to make it for the opening day of carnival rides at the festival.

After hoping off the Nemesis 360 from Peachtree Rides, a twisting and flipping pendulum that puts riders hundreds of feet in the air, the teenagers were off on a quest for deep-fried Oreos.

A group of Peachtree Middle School students waiting their turn said they would like to see the fish in plastic bags be removed from the festival’s inventory of prizes. In years past, the students said some folks abuse or kill fish.

Besides the attractions for local students, Lemonade Days offers adult beverages for parents looking to sit back and watch youngsters tire themselves out at the festival.

Founded by Joyce Amacher and Lynne Byrd in 1994, the Dunwoody Preservation Trust exists because of the Cheek-Spruill House, a two-story home known as the Dunwoody Farmhouse.

Dunwoody teen collects food for pantries

DUNWOODY, Ga. — An up-andcoming organization started by a Dunwoody teenager reached two milestones April 17 — collecting more than 1,000 pounds of food for local pantries and partnering with the Community Assistance Center.

Front Porch Food Drive, the brainchild of Sarah Menis, is expanding the reach of the food drives’ impact through collaboration with a Perimeter-based nonprofit.

The Community Assistance Center, helping neighbors since 1987, uses public and private partners to provide youth programs, food pantries and financial assistance to low-income families.

Local animal hospital alerted to check fraud

DUNWOODY, Ga. — The practice manager at All Creatures Animal Hospital on Mount Vernon Road reported check fraud April 9 after receiving a call from a credit union in Fishers, Indiana.

The manager said she noticed a check made out to a person who did not work at the clinic in the amount of $10,974 while she was completing payroll.

She told an officer that she received a call from an employee with Forum Credit Union in Fishers, Indiana, about a person attempting to cash the check.

The manager told the credit union that the check was a fraud and to alert police.

A Dunwoody officer said the manager called the Fishers Police Department, informed them of the incident and received a report.

The officer said the manager was on the phone with the suspect who was attempting to cash the check when he arrived at the animal hospital.

He said he spoke with the suspect, who said he had nothing to do with the check and disconnected the call.

The investigation is no longer active, according to the Dunwoody officer’s report.

Police arrest suspect found testing car locks

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody Police arrested a 29-year-old Stone Mountain man after an employee at the Residence Inn on Ashford Dunwoody Road reported him for pulling on car

door handles.

Officers said they located the man walking from the hotel to the QuickTrip and detained him without incident.

The hotel employee said he observed the suspect pulling on car door handles. He said the suspect attempted to obtain a room but was denied for not having identification.

Officers said the employee’s description matches the suspect they detained.

He was arrested for loitering and prowling, then transported to DeKalb County Jail.

They said there was no evidence of the suspect entering a vehicle.

Police probe scheme involving wire fraud

DUNWOODY, Ga. — Dunwoody Police met with a victim of suspected wire fraud April 8 after a caller reported hackers were in the process of defrauding the man for $300,000.

The caller, who would not identify himself, provided details of the wire fraud and the address of the 84-yearold victim. The caller said he hacked the hacker’s computer and uncovered the scheme.

The officer said he went to the victim’s home and spoke with the man, who said he suspected fraud. He said he received an April 1 email from a caller after browsing for firewall software online.

The emailer told him he owed $350 for service, and the victim said his computer screen went black after calling a phone number provided in the email.

The suspect asked the victim to enter “100000” on his computer’s keyboard and then told the victim he had “accidentally” sent him $100,000. The victim was then told to send the money back, minus the $350 that he owed.

The victim said he wired $99,400 back to the suspect and remained in contact with him.

Two days later, the victim said he was instructed to go through the same process, this time entering “300000” into his keyboard.

The caller said the victim had “accidentally” sent him $300,000 and insisted he not log in to his bank account.

After a conversation, the victim said the suspect convinced him to transfer money from one of his bank accounts to the other to pay the full amount.

The victim then said he went to the bank and completed a $299,100 transfer to the suspect.

Later, during a conversation with his daughter, the victim learned of a similar scam, which alerted him to possible fraud.

The officer said the victim went to his bank to stop the wire transfers and got two fraud case numbers.

The officer identified three possible phone numbers for the suspect.

Man arrested for DUI on State Bridge Road

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Police arrested a 24-year-old Cumming man April 11 after observing him speeding more than 80 mph on State Bridge Road and following another vehicle too closely.

Before conducting the stop, police had received reports about the suspect recklessly driving in his red Jeep Wrangler and yelling at other drivers, according to the incident report.

Police noted the suspect’s rambling and reported a smell of alcohol, though he did not confirm how many drinks he had consumed.

Police arrested the suspect and charged him with driving under the influence, reckless driving, following too closely, speeding, turn signal required, headlights required and driving too fast for conditions.

The suspect was transported to the North Fulton County Jail in Alpharetta.

DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody Economic Development Department invites Metro Atlantans to its third annual celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage April 28.

The free event, held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the Lawn at Ashford Lane, showcases cultural performances and art from the Asian American community before the month of May.

For the entire month, people will celebrate the contributions and influence of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

The emcees for the celebration are Sophia Choi of WSB-TV and Patty Pan, a former television reporter who currently serves as the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer.

Performances open with Laotian dancers and a demonstration of Asian games including hacky sack and chopsticks. Patrons will then be treated to additional numbers from Korean

Traditional Dance Academy, Karenni Dance, Indian Steps and Style Dance, Nepalese Dance and the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company.

Business and Cultural Development Manager Rosemary Watts is leading the city’s effort to put on the community gathering.

“Interest in this event continues to grow, and this year’s lineup for dance, music, food and demonstrations is better than ever,” Watts said. “We are thrilled to showcase the culture and heritage of these countries and look forward to a spectacular afternoon.”

The celebration will also feature demonstrations of Japanese flower arranging and martial arts from Karate Atlanta Dunwoody.

Many countries will be represented with information tables including Thailand, China, Laos, Japan, Taiwan, India and Nepal.

The intersection of Spalding Drive, Roberts Drive and Dunwoody Club Drive has an interesting history which includes past property owners, a church nearly 200 years old, and the Roswell Railroad.

Thanks to the research of Jim Perkins and the shared memories of Katherine Geffcken, whose parents bought property at the crossroads in 1931, much of that history is preserved.

Dr. William and Elizabeth Geffcken purchased 23.14 acres in April 1931 from Horace Thomas and J. M. Bearden for $3000. Dr. Geffcken was an Atlanta dentist. The family often drove out for Sunday picnics before they began building their home. They did not move permanently into the home until 1946. Family illnesses, the Great Depression and construction delays all led to the delays.

The family called the home Kenstone, with its views of Kennesaw and Stone Mountain from a high ridge along Spalding. Their property extended from where the home still sits on Kenstone Court to Roberts Drive. A neighbor named Taylor watched over the property when they were in Atlanta.

The Roswell Railroad, which operated from Chamblee to Roswell from 1880 to 1920 is a part of this crossroads. From Dunwoody, the railroad tracks followed today’s Chamblee Dunwoody Road until it reached what is now Spalding Drive. The railroad curved to the right along Spalding, going past what is now Pitts Road and cutting through the northwest corner at Spalding and Roberts Drive.

In the early 1900s, when the construction of the Morgan Falls Dam began, the Bull Sluice spur was added to the left of where Chamblee Dunwoody Road meets Spalding Drive. The spur brought supplies to the Morgan Falls construction site.

On the southeast corner of Spalding and Roberts Drive, Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church and cemetery were located, as they are today. There was also a small wood school on the corner, Ebenezer School.

Katherine Geffcken recalls the home of the Farmer family that was

behind Ebenezer Church. T. H., Cora, and son Raymond are recorded on the 1940 census on Hightower Trail, the name for the road which has also been called Old Lawrenceville Road, County Line Road and Dunwoody Club Drive. A yellow cottage has been mentioned in this spot; that may have been the Farmer home. Cora Farmer came by the Geffcken house most Sunday afternoons with a paper bag of beans or corn.

Kennedy. Geffcken believes this land includes where the Baker’s Glen neighborhood is today. Geffcken says, “I remember walking this flat wooded stretch, with some openings and logging roads, when I was young.” The family walked the boundaries of their property every so often to check for trespassers and illegal stills.

Another part of the H. B. Kennedy property included the northwest corner, the one that the Roswell Railroad crossed through. Geffcken remembers this as a side road when her family lived in the area. There was a little stone cottage behind the side road, which she believes was owned by Kennedy. Kennedy’s home was likely a summer cottage. Henry Bissell Kennedy was Atlanta’s Fuel Administrator during World War I, Treasurer of City of Atlanta, and an executive with Fulton National Bank.

Moving south along Roberts Drive and past Ebenezer Church were the properties of J. F. Jordon and the Copeland family. Part of the former Native American Hightower Trail ran to the east of the Geffcken property. The next home to the east was the William Akers summer home.

Spalding Drive was new when the Geffckens bought their land. The 1931 plat shows Spalding Drive. Geffcken says a 1929 map does not. Old Lawrenceville Road was a graded gravel road at the time. Jett Ferry was a dirt road. Roberts Drive was known as Roswell-Dunwoody Road or Roswell Road.

Special Olympics Georgia honors Johns Creek coach

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Leah Douglass said becoming a coach to athletes with special needs was a life changer.

Douglass heads flag football, soccer and basketball for Special K’s, a Johns Creekbased nonprofit and one of some 200 local agencies of Special Olympics Georgia.

Special K’s gives athletes aged 8 and older a space to train and compete in a variety of Olympic-type sports. With around 100 athletes, the organization serves North Fulton but also neighboring counties like Forsyth, helping to fill a void.

“It is so rewarding,” Douglass said, whose 18-year-old son Jake is an athlete with Special K’s. “The athletes are just amazing … They inspire me. They are inspirational.”

The work earned Douglass Special Olympics Georgia Coach of the Year in January, the third time a coach with Special K’s has had the honor.

“I was so humbled and honored because there’s so many great people out there — the [unified] partners and coaches and athletes and parents,” Douglass said. “To be recognized amongst that group is even that much more special.”

Unified partners participate in the sport alongside athletes with special needs, providing an inclusive experience. Douglass’ flag football team is unified, and she is a unified partner herself, keeping pace with an athlete at the Peachtree Road Race every year.

“It makes it that much more meaningful,” Douglass said. She has competed in the Atlanta 10K since 1984.

Douglass joined Special K’s in 2019 at the request of her lifelong best friend and flag football co-coach Helen Villar, whose family had just begun volunteering with the

It’s the only property the nonprofit owns of the several historical sites it manages around Dunwoody.

Together with the Dunwoody Homeowners Association, the DPT raised more than $200,000 and eventually received the home and one-half acre of land in 1998 through a donation from a developer.

Built in 1906, the Cheek-Spruill House is fully restored and the location of “Light Up Dunwoody” and the Dunwoody Homeowners Association’s 4th of July Parade.

According to the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, the Cheek-Spruill House is financially self-sustaining, which is an important criterion of successful historic preservation.

The inaugural Lemonade Days took place in spring 1999 and got its name from the phrase “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”

A decade before Dunwoody was incorporated, a category F-2 tornado ripped through the community, leaving more than $150 million in property damages.

The tornado began its path in Alabama, picked up in Cobb County and came across Chamblee Dunwoody Road, moved east along Peeler Road, down Tilly Mill Road, through parts of Kingsley, across Happy Hollow Road and through Fontainebleau Forest, then across Winters Chapel Road into Lockridge Forest.

Kristin Simmons, interim executive director of the Dunwoody Preservation Trust, said the nonprofit jumped at the opportunity to support the 1,500 families displaced by the storm.

The Dunwoody Homeowners Association, Dunwoody Preservation Trust and Dunwoody Nature Center joined forces following the tornado with an initiative called “Replant the Dunwoody Forest.” More than 25,000 trees were planted around Dunwoody thanks to the effort.

Hope Follmer, director of Lemonade Days, said Dunwoody Preservation Trust partners with the city and its Parks and Recreation Department to put on the annual festival.

Follmer said the nonprofit needs more members for more donations to keep the historical preservation of sites around the city going for future generations.

Young non-profit honored in second year in service

Backpack Buddies of Metro Atlanta is closing the weekend hunger gap for Atlanta’s schoolchildren, one student at a time. Brian and Silvia Eufinger co-founded Edison Prep in 2010, offering one-onone tutoring in students’ homes or local coffee shops. In 2011, Brian and Silvia published the first edition of Edison Prep’s SAT and ACT curriculum—comprehensive workbooks with content, strategies, and practice materials to help students improve their scores—which they continue to revise each year. We soon added AP History bootcamps to the yearly rotation, and since then, we’ve continued to grow our offerings with SAT and ACT group courses, accelerated bootcamps, expanded private tutoring options, and much more!

At Edison Prep, we pride ourselves on being a boutique tutoring agency with a small, experienced team led by the two founders, who still teach full-time in the trenches alongside the rest of the team (which is highly unusual in the test prep industry). The founders teach all of the SAT and ACT group classes and provide

private tutoring whenever they're not teaching classes. They've trained a small team of tutors to assist with the private, fine-tuning tutoring that many group class students select after taking our class. We are proud that our handful of experienced tutors have over 115,000 hours of experience, and we pay at the

Last year, I highlighted how you can protect yourself before you are injured in a wreck by explaining two key types of insurance you need. I had a lot of questions about this afterwards and wanted to provide this information again because it is so important to protect yourself and your family. Oftentimes, people shop for car insurance based on the price rather than on the type of protection provided. We have cases where someone is severely injured, but the other driver has a “minimum limits” policy which does not even cover a fraction of the medical bills.

Here are two types of insurance that you need to protect yourself if someone else injures you in a wreck:

(1) Underinsured Motorist (“UM” or “UIM”) Coverage. This is insurance that protects you if the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

There are two types of UM insurance: “Add-On” and “Reduced-By.” You always

want to have “Add-On” insurance coverage because it goes on top of the at-fault driver’s insurance. I recommend that your UM coverage match your liability coverage, which is the insurance that protects you if you cause a wreck.

(2) Medical Payment Coverage (“Med-Pay”). This is insurance that covers medical bills if you are injured in a car wreck. If you have health insurance, this can be used to cover your co-pays, deductible, and coinsurance. I recommend that you have at least $10,000 in Med-Pay coverage.

We, as teachers and staff, care deeply that all of our students know who God is and that He loves them unconditionally. We are a fully accredited preschool through COGNIA.

We are currently enrolling children for the 2024-2025 school year. At Dunwoody Baptist Preschool, we offer 2, 3 ,4 and 5-day Playmates classes for children ages 6 months to 2 years as well as 5-day Preschool classes for children in 3's, 4’s Pre-K and our unique Young 5’s class. Early Morning drop-off, Extended Day and Enrichment classes in cooking, phonics, science, Spanish, art, ballet,

piano and music are also offered. We feel playtime is foundational to how children learn, and learn to work with each other. Our academic curriculum for 3’s and under is Creative Curriculum and Saxon Curriculum is used in our 4’s and Young 5’s classes.

All children at DBP not only learn and explore within the classroom, they enjoy music and science classes, gym, playground time and chapel. In addition to our caring teachers and high-quality learning experiences, we focus on developing our children spiritually. With Bible stories woven throughout all academic curriculum, our children experience God's truth, power and love through fun and engaging activities.

Front Porch Food Drive, a Dunwoodybased organization, collects non-perishable items directly from people’s homes, making it easy for people to give whatever is in their pantries.

Each week, Menis leaves brown grocery bags on neighbors’ front porches with a flyer explaining her mission and a list of the food pantry’s most-needed items.

A few days later, she picks up the filled bags and delivers them to Community Assistance Center.

Horton said Menis and the Front Porch Food Drive makes for an incredible story of seeing a need and taking concrete action.

“Sarah is an example of the incredible resources we have in our community,” Horton said. “Partnering with her and Front Porch Food Drive helps us meet the increasing needs of our clients.”

The nonprofit feeds more than 1,000 families a month from three food pantry locations on Northwood Drive, Dunwoody Park South and Roswell Road.

Its supplemental food program helps families keep food on the table during a financial crisis and frees up funds in the budget to cover other essentials like food or insurance.

“So many people are in need right now and this is such an easy way to have a huge impact on your community,” Menis said. “I’m so excited for this to grow because it’s going to help so many people.”

Her program will provide grocery bags and customized flyers to anyone wanting to do their own drive and coordinate delivery to one of CAC’s food pantries.

Menis and CAC plan to grow the organization through others doing front porch food drives in neighborhoods throughout Dunwoody, expanding into neighboring Sandy Springs and the Perimeter area.

Through the partnership, high school teens can earn community service hours. Anyone, from church and temple groups to families with kids, are encouraged to volunteer.

Villar, who wrote Douglass’ nomination letter, said she has a knack for making the athletes feel good, heard and respected.

“They seek her out, just to get the fist pump or the high-five,” Villar said.

Inseparable since elementary school, Villar said she has supported Douglass while navigating life with a son who has special needs.

“When Special K’s came along … Jake was 12 or 13, and I think that it’s just really helped his social activity and his ability to interact with people and feel celebrated,” Villar said.

Jeff Smith has watched his own daughter Lilah grow through Special K’s, learning sportsmanship and collaboration. But, as a co-coach with Douglass, Smith said he has witnessed the evolution in skills of all the flag football team members.

Smith said Douglass ensures the experience is enjoyable for the athletes, giving

Smith’s son Tyler is a unified partner on the flag football team, meaning he wakes up early on Saturday mornings to play alongside the athletes at Newtown Park, where Special K’s flag football practice is held. The organization also practices in Alpharetta and Roswell. Tyler, a junior at Denmark High School, said the role of head coach requires a lot of patience, which Douglass has been able to master on the field.

“I, myself, sometimes don’t have the level of patience that I should, but I have never seen her in a moment as a coach, where she has never had the patience for her athletes or for her partners, even in a stressful situation out there,” Tyler said.

He also noted her open-mindedness to suggestions and the level of commitment to not only Special K’s but to her son Jake, who also attends Denmark High.

In his sophomore year, Tyler formed the first and only unified league at a Forsyth County school, though he hopes the idea will spread. Douglass had been a resource for him starting up the flag football team there.

“I wouldn’t have a unified program at my school without Special K’s,” Tyler said. “I wouldn’t be as excited about it. I wouldn’t be as involved in the Special Olympics in general, and the truth is that all comes back to Leah being the coach in the first place.”
