Living and loving with alzheimer’s and dementia As the story goes, an elderly gentleman hurried from a doctor’s appointment to join his wife for lunch – as he did every day – at the memory care community where she lived. The doctor asked why he continued to go faithfully when the wife no longer knew who he was. “Because,” he replied, “I still know who she is.” At Autumn Leaves’ memory care assisted living communities, we see this kind of devotion every day, and are equally devoted to helping loved ones stay connected while facing this heartbreaking disease. Honoring Lifelong Love Clair Jameson, Autumn Leaves’ life engagement director, remembers Alice and her husband Durward, who visited every day, always bringing Alice’s favorite cookies. “My role has changed, but not my love for her, or hers for me,” Durward said. Wise words, Jameson says. “When a spouse has dementia, the relationship
must change as the disease progresses. The love is still there and strong, but the relationship must adjust to new realities.” Jameson recalls another couple’s devotion. “Perry visited daily to work in the garden with Nathalie,” she says. “Gardening kept them connected to their past. Whatever they enjoyed together before, he tried to bring to her here and now.” Keeping Love Alive Memory loss may make you feel like the person you’ve loved for years and the love you once had is no longer present. That’s not necessarily so, says dementia care author Jolene Brackey. “A spouse may not recognize you, but the love is still very much alive. A wife may be expecting a younger version of her husband. So while she may not recognize the older man who visits every day, she remembers her husband and still feels affection for him. Brackey likes to tell the story of a
woman with Alzheimer’s who no longer recognized her husband, Bud. At one visit, Bud gently stroked his wife’s cheek, a gesture of affection they’d shared over the years. Not knowing who he was, the woman told him, “I’m sorry, Sir, but my heart belongs to Bud.”

April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month By: Dr. David Remaley, Roswell Dental Care April is the National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Roswell Dental Care has partnered with the Oral Cancer Foundation and is offering complimentary Oral Cancer exams during the month of April. remaley Dr. David Remaley is passionate about oral cancer screening is doing this in an effort to raise awareness for this silent killer. Oral Cancer is not a rare disease. It kills one person every hour of every day in the US and approximately 132 new individuals are diagnosed with oral cancer each day. These staggering statistics make awareness to the public essential as almost 40,000 Americans will be newly diagnosed this year alone. These screenings are more important now than ever because oral cancer is on the rise. There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to oral cancer. One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol, a long term historic problem and cause, and the other is through the exposure to HPV-16 virus, which is now the leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers in the US. Today, we are seeing young, non-smoking individuals as the fastest growing segment of the oral cancer population. When found early, oral cancers have an 80-90% survival rate. Unfortu-
nately, the majorities are found as late stage cancers and this accounts for the very high death rate of about 43% at five years from diagnosis. Late stage diagnosis is occurring not because these cancers are hard to discover, but because of a lack of public awareness and a lack of regular screenings. Regular dental checkups are important for everyone, but they are vital for men. Men are twice as likely to get oral cancer. Approximately 40,000 oral and pharyngeal (throat) cancers diagnosed each year. According to the National Cancer Institute 15 in 100,000 diagnosed each year are men. While a dentist is examining your mouth and neck they are on the lookout for six possible signs of oral cancer. • A sore or irritation that doesn’t go away • Red or white patches • Pain, tenderness or numbness in mouth or lips • A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving your tongue or jaw • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth Dr. Remaley and Roswell Dental Care can help you keep that healthy smile for a lifetime. Dr Remaley has been treating patients like family for over 30 years in Roswell and North Atlanta. We always welcome new patients. What is cancer? By: Jonathan Stegall, MD We all have different images which come to mind when we think of cancer. Some of us think of an abnormal growth, known as a tumor. Others think of the side effects from treatments, including fatigue, hair loss, and stegall digestive issues. You may think more about the sadness and loss of life we have become all too accustomed to seeing these days. Regardless of your perceptions about cancer, what you may not know is that cancer cells were once normal, healthy cells. Through a process lasting many years, some of the body’s normal cells became so worn down and inflamed that they had to mutate in order
to survive. This mutation is known as cancer when the mass of cells gets large enough to detect. Understanding how cancer forms is critical to both prevention and effective treatment. We MUST focus on the health of the cell in order to get well, and we do this by creating a positive environment that reduces cancer risk.
These include avoiding cigarette smoke, maintaining a healthy body weight, not drinking excessively, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and minimizing stress. If you or a loved one needs a second opinion regarding your cancer treatment, please contact my office at (770) 551-2730.
Five tips to spring-clean your eye health
Jonathan Stegall, g , MD
10700 Medlock Bridge Road Suite 207 • Johns Creek, GA 30097 (770) 551-2730 www. advanced-med.com
(NAPSI)—Spring is an annual reminder of new beginnings. With new life and fresh blooms all around, it also serves as a reminder to spring-clean our overall health, which also includes the eyes. Among older people, vision loss—or even worse, blindness—can have a negative impact on our quality of life, limiting the ability to do things we enjoy such as reading, driving, or seeing our grandchildren. The good news is, many sightstealing conditions can be prevented or slowed down with proper care. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends these five tips to springclean your eye health: 1. Schedule an eye exam by an ophthalmologist. A medical doctor who specializes in medical and surgical eye care. 2. Pay attention to what you eat. Include plenty of citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables and cold water fish in your diet. Healthy body equals healthy eyes. 3. Exercise regularly. Not only does it help your heart and energy levels, many studies have shown that getting regular exercise can benefit your eyes. 4. Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses protect your eyes from cataracts and even eye cancers. Be sure to wear sunglasses with 100 percent UV protection, and a hat while outdoors. 5. Don’t smoke. Smoking increases the risk for eye diseases like cataract and age-related macular degeneration
and raises the risks for heart diseases that indirectly influence eye health. Tobacco smoke, including second-hand smoke, also worsens dry eye. For those concerned about the cost of an exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America® program may be able to help. Nearly 6,000 dedicated volunteer ophthalmologists provide eye exams and care, often at no out-of-pocket cost to eligible patients. Since 1985, the program has helped more than 1.8 million people in need. EyeCare America serves US citizens or legal residents who do not belong to an HMO. To be eligible for the Seniors program • Must be age 65 or older, and • last eye exam by an ophthalmologist must be 3 or more years To be eligible for the Glaucoma program • Must be 1 year since the patient’s last eye exam, and • Determined to be at increased glaucoma risk by age, race, and family history. “Vision loss is also associated with a higher prevalence of chronic health conditions, falls, injuries, depression and social isolation,” said Charles P. Wilkinson, M.D., chairman of EyeCare America. “Most people wait until they notice changes in vision loss, so it’s important to maintain healthy eyes before signs and symptoms begin to show themselves.”
Spring clean your eye health by scheduling an eye exam today. For more information about EyeCare America, visit www.aao.org/eyecareamerica. EyeCare America is co-sponsored by the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Inc., with additional support provided by Alcon.

A mother’s smile By: Dr. Jeffrey Jordan, Jordan Orthodontics I’ve always loved my mom’s smile, but this time last year she made a new patient appointment at my office under an assumed name, an alias! After the initial surprise and laughter, we decided to proceed as usual. I jordan guess she was ready to restore her smile to its former glory. At each new patient appointment we take a series of 10 facial and intraoral photos and an x-ray to observe the roots and bone level. After reviewing the information and
discussing the options, we proposed a treatment plan involving Invisalign. She decided to go for it, so we scanned her teeth with our intraoral scanner (no impressions!) and sent her scan with our detailed prescription to Invisalign. A few weeks later we received the complete set of aligners and placed some attachments on some of her teeth (she refers to them as barnacles). Each aligner is worn for 1 or 2 weeks and moves your teeth .25 mm. My mom had a total of 22 active aligners and 6 overcorrection aligners. We delivered three or four aligners at a time and sanded between her lower teeth a little as was prescribed. I am so proud of my mom, Peggy Jordan, and she loves her newly restored smile!

Did you know almost 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral and throat cancers this year? And that the 5-year survival rate of those diagnosed is only slightly more than 64 percent? When cancer is detected and treated early, treatment-related health problems are reduced. Over half of those in the U.S. survive from oral cancer after five years. If this condition is caught early enough, the chances of successful treatment are high. Dentists look for early signs of mouth cancer during regular checkup appointments, but it's also important for you to recognize these warning signals so you can bring them to the attention of your dentist right away. • Sores, swellings, lumps or thick patches anywhere in or around your mouth or throat • Areas of red or white lesions in your mouth or lips • The feeling of a lump or object stuck in your throat • Swellings that make wearing dentures uncomfortable • Numbness, pain or tenderness anywhere in your mouth, including

your tongue • Pain in one of your ears but without any loss of hearing • Trouble moving your jaw or tongue, or problems with chewing, swallowing or speaking • Loose teeth with no apparent dental cause • Lingering sore throat or hoarseness Oral cancer examinations by your dentist are quick, painless and crucial to detecting it in its early stages. During a routine checkup of your teeth and gums, your dentist also visually checks your lips and face for signs of spreading beyond your mouth. He or she may also palpate the neck and jaw area, and examine both the top and underside of your tongue. These oral cancer screenings should be done every six months. Ultimately, if you know what to look for and see your dentist for regular screenings, early signs of mouth cancer can be identified and taken care of before they become a serious problem. We also use the non-invasive OralID Light for Oral Cancer screening. Call us at 770-884-7151 to schedule your checkup. Or visit us at www.HiTechSmiles.com.

Gaining control over your fitness and your life For many people, aging equals lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle. While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism. Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay active and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground. What is meaningful exercise? A critical component of stimulating the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momentary muscular failure in each exercise performed. With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved. Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity
is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exercise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it.
What is the SuperSlow Zone solution? The SuperSlow Zone protocol is the original and genuine slow-motion, personal strength training workout. The exercise protocol has been proven successful in both building muscle and
increasing resting metabolism, thus allowing the body to burn more calories at rest. SuperSlow Zone provides a safe and effective workout in a short amount of time so that you can get in, get out, and get on with your busy life!

(NAPSI)—For most of us, making a pit stop in the bathroom is not something to which we give much thought. However, many people require much more strategic planning, especially when out and about. This is particularly true of people with impaired bladder function who are dependent on urinary catheters to drain their bladder. According to the National Institutes of Health, urinary catheters have been used for over 3,500 years, but despite having been around for so long, even the most recent advancements in catheters have been made for the hospital or home use, rather than everyday use, making self-catheterization an awkward and uncomfortable experience. A new device named CompactCath is set to shift that paradigm, creating a new generation of catheters designed to fit seamlessly into everyday life. Designed at Stanford University by a team of physicians and engineers committed to improving the quality of life for those who need to self-catheterize, the new device makes it simpler than ever to live an active lifestyle, and is reimbursable through insurance and
Medicare. Fitting discreetly in the palm of your hand with opaque packaging, CompactCath provides users with a more discreet and private experience. It also comes pre-lubricated with a hygiene sheath for comfort, convenience and cleanliness. Available in a variety of sizes for women, men and children, CompactCath was designed for maximum privacy, hygiene and ease of use, allowing users to lead active, thriving lives. Do you need sun to get enough Vitamin D? By: Dr. Brent Taylor, Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Skin cancer is on the rise, and millions of Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year alone. However, myths and misunderstandings are making the problem worse, as many people believe that they taylor should sun bathe or visit tanning salons in order to protect themselves from vitamin D sufficiency. The decision to tan is not trivial. Melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults ages 25-29, and skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. If people are really concerned about their health, they need to consider skin cancer and the tradeoffs of how they are choosing to obtain their vitamin D. But do we need sun exposure to have adequate vitamin D levels? Can you avoid skin cancer and have enough vitamin D? Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that affects calcium levels in the blood. Calcium can be good and bad. Too little calcium can cause weak bones. Too much calcium can cause heart disease because calcified plaques build up in arteries in the heart. So there can be too much of a good thing, and more vitamin D does not necessarily equal a healthier you. Vitamin D intake of 600 IU/day for those aged 19-70 is the recommended amount, and individuals 71 years and up should be sure to get 800 IU/day. The “upper level intake” recommendation is 4,000 IU/day, but there’s no reason to push those limits. The right amount of vitamin D may vary based on the individual. If someone has a family history of certain types of kidney stones or of heart disease but not of weak bones (osteoporosis) then
that person might want lower vitamin D levels. In most cases, we do not know the right answer for a certain person. Genetics and individual variation are something that we cannot yet accurately account for when providing individual recommendations. Although many physicians argue that most individuals can obtain adequate vitamin D by eating a vitamin D rich diet, it proves to be difficult without the help of a multivitamin. Fortified milk and orange juice only contain 100 IU of vitamin D in 8 ounces of liquid. Other common dietary staples such as fortified cereals only supply 40-50 IU/8 ounces and egg yolk has a vitamin D content of 21 IU per yolk. It would take 2 large glasses of milk and 21 eggs per day to reach your vitamin D goal. Based on current recommendations, one of the only reasonable ways to achieve the proper vitamin D levels through diet is with the consumption of fatty fish: such as halibut, herring, salmon, mackerel or tuna. If you are not a fan of these options and you are limiting your sun exposure, you should take either a daily multivitamin or a teaspoon/pill of cod liver oil. New additions to the nutritional market such as chewable vitamins or even fish oil gummy vitamins are surprisingly tolerable, even to the pickiest of eaters. Do we have to stay inside and chew our fish oil gummies to remain in top health? No! Get outside. Enjoy life. Be active. Wear sunscreen! But do not intentionally sunbathe or go to the tanning salon. To get your vitamin D, make healthy dietary choices that include a daily multivitamin with vitamin D.
