Is cancer in your future? By: Jonathan Stegall, MD
Jonathan Stegall, g , MD
With cancer rates continually rising in America, and all of us knowing others who have had cancer, it is understandable that we wonder if we might get it too. Currently, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in the United stegall States will have cancer at some point in their life. These results are concerning, and require a closer look. Is cancer preventable? Or are we merely victims to our genetics? A Harvard study published in 2016 in JAMA
Oncology set out to answer that. In the study, they determined that about half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people were active, maintained a healthy weight, didn’t smoke, and avoided heavy drinking. Preventing half of all cancer deaths amounts to several hundred thousand lives lost each year in the United States alone! What about genetics? It is estimated that about 5-7% of all cancers are genetically based. However, there is growing evidence that we have much more control over our genes than previously thought. This emerging field of science, known as epigenetics, examines the role that lifestyle and environment have on our genes. Through good nutrition and other lifestyle changes, we can ac-
tually turn off harmful genes and turn on beneficial genes. You have much more control over your future health than you probably realize, especially as it relates to cancer!

Want relief from TMJ pain Your pet’s nutritional needs or tension headaches? By: Fido’s Market
By: Dr Ushma Patel Center for Advanced Dentistry You may not have heard about Botox therapy for head, neck, and/or facial pain. The same effect of Botox that reduces the appearance of wrinkles (relaxing muscles) is used to reduce the intensity of muscle contractions. Intense and/or prolonged muscle contractions of our muscles used for chewing can cause pain and damage to our teeth. How Does BOTOX® Treat Jaw Tension and TMJ Disorder? Botox is injected into the masseter muscles of the jaw to treat TMJ. Located on both sides of the head at the point where the jawbone meets the skull, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is used during talking, eating, swallowing, and other everyday activities. If this joint becomes displaced or is overworked through excessive teeth grinding, a person may suffer severe tension headaches, as well as sharp pain in the jaw. BOTOX® relieves jaw tension by making muscles unable to engage in the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that
produces headaches and pain. The BOTOX® alternative treatment for TMJ disorders and jaw tension is usually quick, straightforward, and effective. A non-surgical procedure, BOTOX® injections are administered in a doctor’s office and treatment requires no hospital stay. Most patients experience noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment, although relief can take up to a week. Recently, Botox has become a tool to help relieve migraine headaches and associated neck muscle pain. It has proven to be very effective in pain relief from muscle sources. It is important to distinguish the source of pain since Botox works on muscles. If it does not give some relief, the source of pain is probably not the muscles. In as little as one visit, we can also erase lines and wrinkles from around the mouth, and erase those pesky crows feet and stress lines on the forehead giving you a more youthful appearance! Please call 770-884-7151 now to schedule your complimentary no obligation consultation appointment to find out more and see if this is right for you.
The number of people owning pets in the United States is sharply increasing along with a demand for higher quality foods and awareness of what goes into pet food. The origins of commercial pet food date back to the mid1800s when it was found that hardtack flour biscuits consumed originally by sailors was a favorite treat of dogs at the docks. The first commercial canned foods originated in World War I when there was a surplus of horses, an inexpensive but nutritious meat for pets. Kibble became popular during World War II when rations were needed to go to troops overseas. Use of horse meat ended in the 1970s after public outcry regarding the amount of horses slaughtered for pet food. This resulted in a need for inexpensive meats, resulting in the use of animal byproducts, an increase in inexpensive vegetables and grains such as corn to supplement the loss of horse meat. Companies such as Nestle, Mars, Colgate-Palmolive and Del Monte created products such as Purina, Beneful, Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Diet based on these methods and sources of meat. In the 2000s awareness for what
ingredients were being put into pet food became important to pet owners. The Association of American Feed Control Organizations (AAFCO) became an important source of information for pet owners to rely on if their pet food was good for their pet. For Fido’s market, understanding where pet food is sourced, and what the nutritional value means from educated employees are the tenants of ensuring pets are getting the diet to have a wholesome and healthy life. Helping pet owners navigate through pet nutritional needs versus marketing fluff is one way in which Fido’s Market helps raise awareness for our community.

While varicose veins may seem like a cosmetic problem, they can also be the cause of leg pain, skin problems and other medical issues. Varicose veins do not always show above the surface of the skin, so even taylor symptoms that might seem unrelated like leg swelling, discomfort, itching, tired or easily fatigued legs should prompt a visit to a vein specialist. Your leg problems might be easily correctable! The sooner that you receive treatment for a vein problem, the easier the problem is to treat. Early treatment can prevent some of the permanent skin changes that can accompany long-standing vein disease. With modern technology, vein treatment is now minimally invasive easy from which to recover. When your veins fail to move the blood from the feet back to the heart, the blood will begin to pool. This is called venous stasis. Once a vein begins to leak backwards, pressure in the vein increases and the situation usually worsens. The tiny valves in the veins that help the blood continue against gravity stop working. Blood backs up further and a vicious cycle continues. The vein should be bringing blood to the heart and lungs to be re-oxygenated, but instead it begins to act as a reservoir. This puts stress on the tissues around the vein and the areas of the leg and foot that the vein is supposed to be serving. There are many factors that contribute to the formation of varicose veins, the largest of which seems to be heredity. Individuals whose parents suffer from varicose veins should keep an eye out for leg pain, skin discoloration and bulging of the veins. Another condition that may aggravate varicose veins is pregnancy during which hormone levels fluctuate, blood volume increases and blood circulation decreases due to pelvic pressure. Other causes are: • Hormonal changes due to puberty, menopause and taking birth control pills • Obesity which puts too much pressure on the legs, causing the veins to overwork • A sedentary lifestyle without much exercise
• A job in which you sit or stand for hours, causing the veins to overwork in order to pump blood back to the heart. • Injuries to the vein from trauma or blood clots But how do you know when to seek treatment and for which symptoms? Some of the main reasons to seek vein treatment are: • Pain and soreness of the lower legs • Leg swelling or itchy skin near a bulging • Restless legs • Problems with fragile veins getting easily injured and bleeding • Inflamed skin from blood clots in the veins • Visible bulging veins • Itchy skin near a bulging vein • Skin breakdown or to prevent the development of venous ulcers • Improved appearance of your legs when the varicose veins are gone Unfortunately, vein disease will not simply go away. In fact, it usually progresses with time. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a healthy body weight will help to prevent vein disease. For those individuals already suffering from vein disease and vein insufficiency symptoms, vein treatments are minimally invasive, quick, out-patient procedures that are generally covered by insurance. Furthermore, once your veins are treated, the symptoms should be eliminated. The majority of patients that undergo EVLA report aches and pains, fatigue, swelling in the lower legs and ankles, itching and burning and cramps improve. For the vast majority of patients, symptoms from varicose veins are gone immediately after treatment. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we offer several different kinds of treatments for both spider and varicose veins. If you already have problematic veins or you suspect you may be developing varicose veins, it is in your best interest to receive treatment. You deserve healthy, happy legs! Schedule a consultation today with Dr. Brent at Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta 678-345-1899.

Orthodontics today Brought to you by: Dr. Jeff Jordan Jordan Orthodontics There’s more to a beautiful smile than straight teeth, and today’s orthodontists are uniquely qualified to help you achieve the smile that you’ve always wanted. To an orthodontist, your teeth and jaws are like a three-dimensional puzzle. Often, multiple treatment options can achieve the same desired result. So, whether it is you or your child considering treatment, orthodontists are uniquely equipped to diagnose and treat the problem. As specialists, orthodontists limit their practices to their area of expertise. As a result, you can expect to get the best care available because that’s all we do! Invisalign continues to be an excellent solution for less challenging orthodontic conditions. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks and moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter. The number of aligners needed is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning of treatment. Most treatments completed with aligner therapy involve less movement and shorter treatment times ranging between 6 and 12 months. However, Invisalign can be used in more difficult situations utilizing elastics to improve the bite and has also been used for more serious problems that require extractions or even reconstructive jaw surgery. Clear or ceramic tooth colored braces and wires have made orthodontic treatment more discreet and aesthetically pleasing while new super elastic memory wires have made treatment more efficient and comfortable. Heat activated super elastic memory
wires are very flexible at room temperature and can be placed into the braces on extremely crooked teeth. Then, as the wire warms in the mouth, the wire exerts a light continuous force on the teeth causing them to move a little every day. Surprisingly, the lighter forces move the teeth faster but with considerably less discomfort. Bulky braces and heavy forces are a thing of the past. Another recent innovation involves customized orthodontic appliances that are computer generated to work with each patient’s unique situation. This all-inclusive orthodontic solution includes customized brackets, wires, and placement trays. A computerized scan of the patient’s mouth is initially taken to diagnose and create a treatment plan. Customized appliances improve the efficiency of the treatment and minimize the time required to detail the bite and complete the treatment. Because of these innovations most patients finish treatment in significantly less time. Another innovation that cuts treatment time is Acceledent which can be used with any orthodontic treatment modality. Acceledent is an intraoral device that generates gentle micropulses to accelerate bone remodeling. With just 20 minutes per day, the tiny vibrations caused by Acceledent can expedite tooth movement, and therefore treatment time, by up to 50% according to one clinical study. There are many different treatment options for today’s patients! Orthodontists are using everything from clear aligners to clear, metal or lingual braces in order to produce exceptional results. So visit your board certified specialist in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics… also known as your local orthodontist and love your smile!

Gaining control over your fitness and your life For many people, aging equals lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle. While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism. Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay active and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground. What is meaningful exercise? A critical component of stimulating the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momentary muscular failure in each exercise performed. With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved. Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity
is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exercise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it.
What is the SuperSlow Zone solution? The SuperSlow Zone protocol is the original and genuine slow-motion, personal strength training workout. The exercise protocol has been proven successful in both building muscle and

What is Laser therapy and what makes it so good? Laser Therapy is the most advanced pain relief technology available to the public. Laser therapy uses a process called photo-bio-modulation to enhance your body’s ability to heal itself. By flooding the tissues stewart with photons, Laser Therapy energizes the damaged cells and increases circulation to the painful area. This produces a cascade of healing responses in your body, reducing inflammation, thereby reducing or even eliminating your pain. Treatments take just a few minutes. Laser Therapy is FDA cleared to treat pain, inflammation, arthritis, and
muscle spasms. We are using Laser Therapy to treat a host of conditions including rotator cuff injuries, post operative pain and soreness (for any surgery), frozen shoulder, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, neck pain, muscle strains, low back pain, and even migraines. Most of our patients are absolutely stunned when their pain is either cut in half or eliminated on the first visit! The early signs of periodontal disease
northfulton.com 11
Thank you for Voting us Best Dentist!
By: Dr. David Remaley Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to remaley as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. Here are some warning signs that can signal a problem: • gums that bleed easily • red, swollen, tender gums • gums that have pulled away from the teeth • persistent bad breath or bad taste • permanent teeth that are loose or separating • any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite • any change in the fit of partial dentures Some factors increase the risk of developing gum disease. They are: • poor oral hygiene • smoking or chewing tobacco • genetics • crooked teeth that are hard to keep clean • pregnancy • diabetes • medications, including steroids, certain types of anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, some calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives Roswell Dental Care can help you diagnose your problem if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your gums may become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily brushing and flossing. Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis affects 47.2% of adults over 30 in the United States. It can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth and it may become more severe over time. If it does, your teeth will feel loose and start moving around in your mouth. This is the most common form
Dedicated to providing exceptional dentistry and creating beautiful, healthy smiles for over 30 years. of periodontitis in adults but can occur at any age. It usually gets worse slowly, but there can be periods of rapid progression. Aggressive periodontitis is a highly destructive form of periodontal disease that occurs in patients who are otherwise healthy. Common features include rapid loss of tissue and bone and may occur in some areas of the mouth, or in the entire mouth. Research between systemic diseases and periodontal diseases is ongoing. While a link is not conclusive, many studies indicate that severe gum disease may be associated with several other health conditions such as diabetes or stroke. It is possible to have gum disease and have no warning signs. That is one reason why regular dental checkups and periodontal examinations are very important. Treatment methods depend upon the type of disease and how far the condition has progressed. Good dental care at home is essential to help keep periodontal disease from becoming more serious or recurring. Remember: You don’t have to lose teeth to gum disease. Brush your teeth twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, eat a balanced diet, and schedule regular dental visits for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Roswell Dental Care can help you keep that healthy smile for a lifetime. Dr. Remaley has been treating patients like family for over 30 years in Roswell and North Atlanta area. If you have any of these symptoms, give Roswell Dental Care a call at 470-375-9244 for a FREE 2nd opinion or schedule for dental checkup. We ALWAYS welcome new patients.
