By: Dr. Jeff Jordan
Wow! We just started our 30th year in Alpharetta and we are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of this community! My staff and I often run into former patients and parents around town as we live, work, jordan and play in the area. When I run into a patient or parent, I often pull up the patient’s before and after photos on my phone and we usually have a chuckle and thank God for the profession of orthodontics. Many thanks to all the patients that have allowed us to be a part of their lives! We also want to thank our patients for voting us “best” orthodontic office for the last four years! You don’t win many awards after high school, so it is a great honor to be recognized. We have seen over 21,000 new patients over the years, so we have a little head start. Experience counts, and we have a lot of that. Because we take before and after photos on each and every patient, we have a huge portfolio of different orthodontic problems and treatment options. So no matter what your smile looks like, we have seen something similar or worse! We can show you the before and after photos of someone else’s treatment that had a situation that is similar to your situation. We can help you visualize the treatment outcome and the options. Since most orthodontic treatments only last for a year or two, we have to have a whole new set of patients every two years. Thank you to all the patient’s who have referred friends and neighbors over the years. We truly appreciate your recommendation. No thank you list would be complete without thanking my mom and dad who helped me start my practice. Also, a large shout out to my office manager, Laurie Stinger, who has been on board from day one. Orthodontics is a team effort and at Jordan Orthodontics we have been blessed with great patients and a great team over the years! Thanks again!!!

October 2017
Congratulations Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta Dr. Taylor, congratulations on winning Best Vein Care Specialist and Runner Up for Best Dermatologist for North Fulton 2017! What do your think has allowed for this success so quickly after opening your Taylor practice? Dr. Taylor: “When my wife and I made the decision to move home be close to family and to open a practice that would serve our community, we knew it would be a challenging road. And it has been! But I am just so thankful for the community’s support, for my wonderful coworkers and for my patients! I was confident in my training and in my experience as a Mohs surgeon and vein care physician, but I knew that there are a lot of moving parts to a practice, some of which I knew little about. Since opening on Jan 30th 2017, we have made a lot changes and tweaks to try to make our practice a place where patients feel heard, well cared for and valued. How did you react to the news of winning both these titles? To say that I was shocked and overwhelmed with appreciation for winning “Best Vain Care” Specialist and runner up for “Best Dermatologist” in North Fulton after merely 7 months of practice here in Alpharetta is an understatement. I was and am thrilled. I hope that this means that our patients realize the depth of my dedication and that my care and concern for my patients continues past 5:00pm. As a dermatologist, how did you come to excel in the field of vein treatment? After becoming a board-certified dermatologist, I spent a fellowship year in La Jolla, California, where I was trained by a cardiothoracic surgeon and cosmetic dermatologists in the Scripps Vein Clinic while also training in Mohs surgery. I am exceptionally proud of our Best Vein Care title, as I believe that I truly do provide patients with excellent vein care services usually provided by several different specialists. I feel so fortunate to be able to address both medically significant vein disease as well as cosmetic venous issues. I
am excited to continue to provide my patients this great service. You mentioned “Mohs surgery” – what is it? And what does “MOHS” stand for? Mohs surgery is a special technique for removing skin cancer. The word “Mohs” isn’t an acronym. Mohs is actually named after Dr. Mohs, the surgeon who first pioneered this advanced method for curing skin cancer. With Mohs surgery, a cancer is removed in layers and examined under the microscope until it is completely gone – the technique carries a 99% cure rate for most skin cancers. As for runner up for Best Dermatologist, I never expected to be on the radar for this award so soon after opening, and I am just so glad that I have made a positive impression! I believe that my expertise in Mohs surgery likely contributed to my patients’ happiness and to this honor. Is there anything else that you would like to share? I do want to thank my staff for all their help. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, we have been blessed with the most reliable, dedicated and genuine staff one could hope for: we have a team of very knowledgeable, experienced and energetic people working together. They care so much for our patients. It feels so wonderful to walk into work and have staff ask how patient x or patient y is doing and say they were thinking of them over the weekend. They care and it shows! And I am so grateful! So, to our team at Premier Dermatology, thank you for the fantastic job that you do every day! Thank you Dr. Taylor, and Congratulations to Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta.

Specialist Q&A with Centered Recovery Programs in Integrative Oncology A mindfulness-based non-12 step substance abuse treatment program that offers outpatient services in the Roswell/Alpharetta area.
Cancer Treatments Including: IV Vitamin C Fractionated Chemotherapy Nutrition Supplementation
Jonathan athan Stegall, MD
Q: What kind of program is offered to clients at Centered Recovery? A: We offer a completely unique curriculum of psychoeducational classes combined with mindfulness practices, group and individual therapy with fully licensed clinicians, art therapy, neurological feedback therapy and other adjunct therapies for a completely specialized recovery experience. Our clients can choose the adjunct therapies and even some of the groups and educational classes that will be most beneficial for them, which means their recovery is uniquely customized for their own needs. We also offer flexible scheduling to fit almost any lifestyle, including outpatient, intensive outpatient, and full-time day treatment. Our clients can schedule their recovery appointments and still be with their family to cheer on their children’s sports teams and theater productions, have the love and support of their family and friends on nights and weekends, or be at important work meetings as needed. We call it “real time recovery”. Q: Okay, explain “real time recovery”. A: Real time recovery is the ability to get the help you need without having to leave your life behind, even for a few months the way residential treatment
requires. With our unique and flexible scheduling, our clients can take what they learn home with them every afternoon, and this allows their loved ones to share in their progress and recovery as well. They aren’t isolated away from the support and care of loved ones at what can be one of the most vulnerable time in their lives. Experiencing recovery while still participating in their real life allows them to work through issues with their addiction, relationships, or work and get feedback from their counselors to continue to make progress— not just recover in theory and have it fall apart once home. Q: What is your facility like? A: Our facility is beautiful, located in a private location within a physician’s office park, and is serene and comfortable. For clients concerned with privacy issues, our office faces a beautiful wooded area away from the road, and is without through traffic. Our
clients enjoy walking at lunch or break times among the trees. Q: What kind of clients do you treat? A: Our facility only treats adults over the age of 18, who have a minor to moderate substance abuse issue with drugs or alcohol. We also treat clients who have attempted recovery elsewhere and were unsuccessful, as well as those who are looking for an alternative to the 12 step approach. Q: What makes Centered Recovery unique? A: We are the only facility in Georgia that offers this mindfulness-based alternative approach. Our program is compatible with any other treatment model that a client may wish to use in conjunction with ours, however it is religion and 12 step free. The program is based on the newest scientific research which shows the effectiveness of everything we do.
Nutrition: You are what you absorb By: Jonathan Stegall, MD
New Alpharetta Location Coming Soon! 10700 Medlock Bridge Road Suite 207 • Johns Creek, GA 30097 (770) 551-2730 www. drstegall.com
It is commonly said, “You are what you eat.” The idea that food is more than just an energy source is one we should always keep in mind. For this reason, I highly recommend a diet rich in healthy, minimally stegall processed organic foods. Processed foods, especially those containing sugar, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, and artificial colors should be avoided. Although a healthy diet is a great start, it isn’t enough, especially when dealing with cancer. It turns out that you are not just what you eat, but what you absorb. Once food is ingested, it passes down the esophagus and into the stomach. Acid and enzymes begin
to break down the food so that it can be absorbed in the intestines. This process is inefficient for many people, leading to poor absorption of their food. The deleterious effects of this are many, and include the digestive issues we see so commonly today as well as autoimmune disease, psychiatric disease, and cancer. How do we fix it? In addition to a healthy diet, supplementation
with digestive enzymes as well as a probiotic are frequently needed. Once digestion and absorption are optimized, we see treatments start to work better and quality of life improve. For more information, please call my office at (770) 551-2730 or visit my website at drstegall.com.

At Johns Creek Dermatology, we are a complete practice, treating both adult and pediatric patients, offering cutting edge surgical treatment options in office. Incorporating surgical procedures into our daily practice allows us to provide the most comprehensive care to our patients. Mohs surgery, a technique for removing skin cancers, and the most recent and exciting addition to our practice, is the optimal treatment for many basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, including those in cosmetically and functionally important areas around the eyes, face, scalp, fingers, etc. Mohs is also recommended for carcinomas that are large,
aggressive or growing rapidly or have recurred after previous treatment. The procedure is done in stages, all in one visit, while the patient waits between each stage. After removing a layer of tissue, the surgeon examines it under a microscope in an on-site lab. If any cancer cells remain, the surgeon knows the exact area where they are and removes another layer of tissue from that precise location, while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. The doctor repeats this process until no cancer cells remain. Dr. Shereen Timani is committed to providing exemplary care for her patients, incorporating her double Board Certifications & 17 years of expertise
in Dermatology and Dermatopathology, and is excited to offer the gold standard in treatment for skin cancer. Johns Creek Dermatology & Family Medicine 6300 Hospital Parkway, Suite 100 Johns Creek, GA 30097 (770) 771-6591

Dental anxiety and how to overcome it By: Dr. David Remaley If you ever get nervous just thinking about going to the dentist, you’re not alone. Perhaps you’re scared the visit might hurt or you haven’t been in a while and not sure what the dentist will find. Many people remalley are anxious due to an unpleasant dental experience in their past. Whatever your reason, the right dental team will make sure your dental and your emotional health are taken care of. The more you delay – or just don’t go – to the dentist, the higher your risk of developing dental problems that will make gearing up for future dental visits more difficult. In fact, seeing your dentist regularly can actually make the entire process – from making an appointment to sailing through it – much easier on many levels. Use these strategies at your next appointment to help ease your anxiety and strengthen your smile. 1. Speak up Anyone with anxiety knows sharing your feelings makes a world of difference. If you're tense or anxious, do yourself a favor and get your concerns off your chest. Your dentist and dental team are better able to treat you if they know your needs. • Tell your dentist about your anxiety. When you book your appointment, tell the receptionist you’re nervous about dental visits. Remind the dentist and dental staff about your anxiety when you arrive. Share any bad experiences you may have had in the past, and ask for suggestions on coping strategies. • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes knowing what is going to happen alleviates any fears of the unknown. • Agree on a signal. Let your dentist know by raising your hand if you need to take a break during an exam. • If you experience pain even with a local anesthetic, tell your dentist. Some patients get embarrassed about their pain tolerance or don’t want to interrupt a dentist during a procedure. Talk with your dentist about pain before it starts so your dentist knows how to communicate with you and make it more comfortable. 2. Distract yourself
Taking your mind off the exam may seem impossible when you’re nervous, but there are some things that that can help distract your thoughts. • Wear headphones. If the sound of the drill bothers you, bring headphones so you can listen to your favorite music or audiobook. Some dental offices even have televisions or show DVDs. • Occupy your hands by squeezing a stress ball or playing with a small handheld object, like a fidget spinner. • Imagine your happy place and visualize yourself at a relaxing beach or garden. 3. Use mindfulness techniques Relaxation starts in the mind. Try deep breathing exercises to help relax tension in your muscles. • Count your breaths. Inhale slowly and then exhale for the same number of counts. Do this five times while you’re waiting for your appointment, or during breaks while you’re sitting in the dental chair. • Do a body scan. Concentrate on relaxing your muscles, one body part at a time. Start with your head and work your way down to your toes. For example, you can focus on releasing tension starting in your forehead, then your cheeks, your neck and down the rest of your body. Roswell Dental Care offers FREE conscious sedation Nitrous oxide) to any patients that are anxious about their dental procedure.. Recently voted Best Dentist of North Atlanta in “The Best of the Best” contest, Roswell Dental Care can help you maintain that healthy smile for a lifetime. Contact lens research is here Do you wear contact lenses? Can you imagine a world without them? Over the past few decades improvements in contact lens optics and material enhancements have dramatically improved the wearing experience of users globally. Looking forward, there is much to anticipate in the future of contact lenses beyond vision correction. Contact lenses may act as biosensors, drug delivery devices or in virtual/augmented reality. As futuristic as these ideas may sound, researchers are on the brink of bringing these technologies to life. Advancements in engineering and chemistry certainly drive new contact lens innovations, but clinical data is crucial to bring new products and product enhancements to the market. That’s where we at the Johns Creek Research Clinic come in and that’s how you may help…. Our staff thrives on vision care research. As we are not a primary care clinic, we are dedicated to clinical research that enhances product development. A caregiver in distress TM
By: Amy Hentschel So many of our senior care phone calls come from stressed out, burned out family caregivers. Their stories all have the same familiar details including years of giving personalized one-on-one care, sleepless nights, injuries of their own and complete frustration and exhaustion. The most important element of all runs through each family’s story, the sense of duty and obligation to the ones they love. Here are some startling statistics about caregivers in America today: * There are 65 million caregivers providing 20 hours or more of unpaid care a week * Of these family caregivers, 60% work outside of the home * 70% suffer from depression * Women make up 66% of the caregivers and 64% of those live with the loved one * An estimated 30-40% of caregivers die before the ones they are caring for do National Alliance for Caregiving in collaboration with AARP; November 2009
When we receive these calls, our goal is to come along side the family in need and help put resources in place to begin to relieve the heavy burden. Our goal is get the professionals in place either through home care services, adult day programs, or placement in assisted living to take over the physical care giving. Only then can that family caregiver return to caring for themselves and being the family member they were meant to be. We finally see the family restored and everyone back in their proper roles. I often tell families, “Caring for your loved one 24 hours/day, 7 days/week is a task we simply weren’t designed to perform. It’s like asking yourself to fly like a bird. It sounds like a lovely endeavor until you step off the limb”. Once the care is in place, we connect our families to the many and wonderful support groups in Gwinnett County. It helps to talk with others that have walked in your shoes and have gone before you. Amy Hentschel is a senior care consultant and owner at Senior Provisions, LLC. The holidays are typically a time of the year that fills up our social calendar with work parties, school programs and festivities. We interact socially with more people during the holidays than any other time of the year. It can be exhausting and for some downright stressful. We can get you looking and feeling better before the holidays approach! Botox, used for TMJ pain and cosmetic purposes, is a safe, effective, and relatively painless way to improve your mood, self-esteem and image. Are you noticing more lines and wrinkles developing around your eyes, nose, or mouth? Schedule an appointment with Dr. Patel to learn more about the benefits of facial fillers. Radiesse is one of the longer-lasting facial fillers for smoothing out lines, wrinkles, and deeper folds around the nose and mouth. Another procedure you may want to consider is our In-Office Zoom! Whitening! Many of the over-the-counter “whitening” solutions are only moderately effective. They may clear away
surface level stains, but they don’t truly get to the root of the problem. Professional teeth whitening is different. It can reverse the effects of many years’ worth of stains and get your teeth looking bright and white! Whether your teeth are crooked, stained, chipped, or otherwise damaged, you may want to consider getting dental veneers. Veneers can be done in very little time and can completely transform your smile. By reshaping your existing teeth, porcelain veneersin the shape, size, and color that you desire- will be professionally adhered onto your natural teeth to give you a smile that you’ve always wanted. Ever smiled or noticed in the mirror a flash of silver in your teeth? Amalgam replacement may be an option for you. We now have new composite filling materials that are white and strong. Morning inspiration:
Choosing a better breakfast (BPT) - The alarm beeps as you gaze out the window at the soft sunlight welcoming the day. You roll out of bed and your stomach grumbles. You stumble to the kitchen to see how you can tame the hunger pangs, ultimately reaching for a doughnut or prepackaged breakfast bar. While this may satisfy momentarily, it won’t fuel you through the morning. As your blood sugar spikes, you’ll feel a short burst of energy followed by a mid-morning crash that leaves you exhausted and hungry. You need to kick the quick fix and instead choose a better breakfast. When you eat a wholesome meal to start your day, you give your body and mind the fuel it needs all morning long. Whether at home or on-the-go, eating well during the most important meal of the day is easier than many people think. Here are a few tips to keep you satisfied: Plenty of protein: Protein helps you feel full longer so you’re less likely to need a mid-morning pick-me-up. Plus, protein is an important building block for the body, helping support bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Try adding protein-packed foods to your breakfast, such as meat, beans, nut butters and eggs. Necessary nutrients: According to Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner, eggs are a classic breakfast food, but there’s one easy change that can supercharge any meal. “Swapping out ordinary eggs for Eggland’s Best eggs, gets you six times more vitamin D, 10 times more vitamin E, double the omega-3s and more than double the vitamin B12,” says Blatner. “Plus, Eggland’s Best eggs also contain 25 percent less saturated fat than ordinary eggs - that’s why they are the only eggs I serve my family and recommend to my clients.” Fresh produce: Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to breakfast not only gives you extra vitamins and minerals, it also helps you keep meals fresh and interesting. Add lettuce and sliced peppers to your egg sandwich. Top your oatmeal with chopped peaches or favorite seasonal fruit. Become a mix-master by blending smoothies in endless combinations to satisfy taste buds. Whole grains: Like protein, whole grains help you to feel satisfied longer, so you don’t feel the need to eat until lunchtime. In general, most people need to eat about 6-8 ounces of grains daily, according to the USDA. Half of that should be whole grains. To boost your breakfast, choose whole-grain cereals, stuff a whole-grain tortilla with
scrambled eggs, or top whole-grain toast with nut butters. Want some more breakfast inspiration? Anytime Egg Nachos Ingredients: 2 Eggland’s Best eggs (large) 1 large (or 2 small) sweet potatoes, washed and sliced into thin chips 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 teaspoon pepper, divided 3 tablespoons milk 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 cup black beans, drained and rinsed 1/4 cup finely shredded red cabbage 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped 1/4 cup guacamole 1/4 cup pico de gallo or favorite salsa Sour cream, jalapenos or other additions for serving if desired Preparation: Preheat oven to 400 F. Place sweet potatoes on a large sheet pan in a single layer, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with half the salt and pepper. Don’t overcrowd the pan. (You may need to use 2 sheet pans.) Bake for 15-20 minutes. Flip sweet potatoes and bake for another 10 minutes or until potatoes are crispy chips. Coat a nonstick skillet with cooking spray and bring to medium heat. Scramble the eggs with milk and remaining salt and pepper, and pour into skillet, stirring often until cooked through. Set aside. Remove sweet potatoes from oven and top with half of the cheese, followed by the eggs and beans. Top with remaining cheese. Place back in the oven until cheese is melted about 5-10 minutes. Remove from oven and place on serving dish. Top with cabbage, cilantro, guacamole and salsa. Serve immediately.

Help for people with problem perspiration (NAPSI)—A common but hidden scourge, excessive perspiration is a serious medical condition called hyperhidrosis that affects nearly 367 million people. Lisa Pieretti, executive director of the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHhS), notes, “The pressures of dealing with a ‘sweating problem’ around peers can be catastrophic to self-esteem and more. Too often, people become anxious about going to work, socializing with friends, or being out in public in general. But when those with hyperhidrosis receive support, understanding, and appropriate treatment, their lives can be dramatically changed.” Consider these common myths: Myth: Sweaty people are nervous. Truth: People with hyperhidrosis sweat excessively regardless of mood, weather or activity. Myth: Night sweats are a “female problem.” Truth: Night sweats can be serious for anyone. Any changes in your pattern of sweating should be evaluated by
a physician. Myth: Antiperspirants are for underarms only. Truth: You can use most antiperspirants nearly anywhere sweating is a problem. One of the most effective available without a prescription, Certain Dri, was specifically developed for people who suffer from excessive sweating. If you produce excess perspiration, ask your doctor to help you to not just “know sweat” but achieve a more comfortable, happier life. Learn more at www.SweatHelp.org.

Gaining control over your fitness and your life For many people, aging equals lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle. While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism. Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay active and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground. What is meaningful exercise? A critical component of stimulating the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momentary muscular failure in each exercise performed. With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved. Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity
is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exercise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it.
What is the SuperSlow Zone solution? The SuperSlow Zone protocol is the original and genuine slow-motion, personal strength training workout. The exercise protocol has been proven successful in both building muscle and
