Woman calls police over possible prowler MILTON, Ga. — Milton Police are investigating a May 4 incident in which a woman reported an unknown person on her Avensong Village Circle property around 2:30 a.m.

The homeowner said she began banging on the window to scare away what she believed was a person in the yard.

Police noted a gate to the backyard was open and footprints were visible in the wet grass. The footprints were tracked in the direction of nearby parked cars. Footprints were also found on a neighboring property.

Police reported no cars near the area appeared to have been damaged or burglarized.

Milton Police seek pair for theft of video games MILTON, Ga. — Two people are wanted in connection for the theft of video games from the Milton Walmart on May 4.

An employee said video surveillance showed a male and female take 18 video games, a hair brush and hair ties into the family bathroom. The pair then walked out without the merchandise visible, which the employee said had likely been concealed in a backpack the female was wearing.

The same two people were reported at a store in Forsyth County, but police could not find the suspects after reaching the store.

Police identified the male through a license plate on the car the suspects used to drive away from the store.

Woman reports car stolen while parked in driveway MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman reported May 4 that her car had been stolen from her driveway along Avening Court.

The victim said the 2013 Audi Q5 had recently been left at a detailing shop and she may have left a spare key at the shop or inside the vehicle. She said she didn’t know whether she had locked the car.

$34,000 car loan. The loan was processed through an address in Memphis, Tenn.

The woman said someone had also made an attempt to use her identity unsuccessfully.

The woman said she parked the car around 11 p.m. the prior night and noticed it was missing around 9 a.m.

May 4.

Police contacted the car dealer where the Audi was purchased and were told the car had been repossessed.

Man suspects housemate of fraudulent withdrawal MILTON, Ga. — A Milton man told police he thinks his housemate used his debit card for a $700 withdrawal and later returned the card to his wallet.

The man said the withdrawal was made with his card at the Chase Bank on Windward Parkway around 4:30 p.m. on May 4. The man lives with his mother, stepfather, sister and sister’s boyfriend, and he suspects the boyfriend of making the withdrawal.

The victim said he believes it was his sister’s boyfriend because they had both been in a car when he used an ATM to make a withdrawal the night before.

He was also suspicious of the boyfriend because the card was in his wallet that morning, and he believed someone living with him had put the card back after making the withdrawal.

DUI suspect spotted driving on flat tires MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman was arrested May 5 for DUI and other charges after an officer saw her driving along Deerfield Parkway with two flat tires.

The officer spotted a Dodge truck with both passenger side tires flat and made a traffic stop just after midnight.

According to the report, the woman said she believed she hit something but was not sure of what it was. The officer said the woman smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking two glasses of wine that night.

The woman showed multiple signs of intoxication during a field sobriety test and was arrested for DUI, tire infraction and operating an unsafe vehicle.

Woman loses thousands in airline refund scam MILTON, Ga. — A Milton woman was scammed out of thousands of dollars after being told she would need to pay a fee to cancel a plane ticket.

The victim said she called Delta in an attempt to cancel the ticket but was told it was non-refundable. She then received a call from a man, who identified himself as Shawn, telling her she could cancel the ticket if she paid a fee which had to be payed through Google Play cards.

The woman bought approximately $9,000 in cards. After listing off the access codes for the cards, the woman realized she was being scammed and ended the call.

The victim called her banks and was able to stop around $4,000 in payments, but the remainder of the funds were lost.

The woman said she was told by American Express the purchases were not fraudulent because she willingly bought the cards and provided their codes.

Police search for suspect in fake investment scheme MILTON, Ga. — A person claiming to be an investor scammed two women out of $2,000, but their actions could help police track down a suspect.

The two women, who live in Loganville and South Carolina, said they agreed to each give $1,000 to a supposed investor they met through Instagram.

The victims were told to leave the cash in a mailbox along Simmons Hill Road in Milton. The women complied but set up an iPad near the mailbox to capture video. The women were told to meet the investor at her office in Cumming but returned to the mailbox a few minutes after dropping off the money.

The money was missing, but the iPad video showed a suspect drive up to the mailbox in a truck, take the cash and drive away. The truck’s license plate was captured in the video and was logged by police.

Speeder caught traveling over twice speed limit ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Police arrested a man April 28 after he was caught driving 119 mph in a 65-mph zone.

Police were patrolling that morning on Ga. 400 northbound near Encore Parkway when one officer spotted the man pass by at a high rate of speed.

Police pulled the man over. He said that he had been speeding because he was running late on his way home.

The man, identified as 29-year-old Ricky Chambers of Milton, was arrested for speeding and reckless driving first offense.

Fulton DA launches new unit Milton makes to help wrongfully convicted mid-year budget FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard Jr. has announced creation of the state’s first Conviction Integrity Unit.

Conviction Integrity Units have been created across the county to re-examine questionable convictions.

CIUs investigate and remedy wrongful convictions and help establish policies and procedures to prevent future conviction error.

The Fulton County CIU will investigate claims of innocence to determine whether new evidence or facts give rise to a substantial probability that the convicted defendant was not the person who committed the offense.

“Some within the criminal justice system here in Fulton County have said that my office is taking a significant risk by creating and forming a Conviction Integrity Unit,” Howard stated. “Some believe we are exposing ourselves to greater scrutiny and criticism by sanctioning an independent review of our cases. However, it is my belief that a conviction based upon truth and justice will withstand any scrutiny. It is my belief that the greatest risk is not allowing truth and justice to direct your decisions.”

The CIU will investigate claims of innocence by convicted individuals who have already been through their trial and appellate processes. The CIU will review cases in which there is new factual, physical or forensic evidence.

The unit will oversee cases previously tried in the Fulton County Superior Court. There must be a claim of actual innocence or wrongful conviction, predicated on a factual matter, not a purely legal issue.

There is no set timeframe by which claims presented to the CIU will be resolved, but the office said it will make every effort to expedite the resolution of each claim.

A panel made up of eight members including three assistant district attorneys from the Fulton County office, one attorney from the Georgia Innocence Project, one Fulton County minister, one attorney or administrator from a local college or law school and one attorney from the Georgia Chapter of the NAACP will review cases received by the office to determine whether or not

The panel will submit its recommendation to the director of the Conviction Integrity Unit who will report directly to Howard for a final decision.

“It is of foremost importance to ensure that each case is handled with its proper due diligence,” Atlanta NAACP Vice-President Gerald Griggs said. “The people of Fulton County must have confidence in the just outcome of each case; therefore, we applaud this step by Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard to review previous cases for possible wrongful convictions.”

According to a study by the University of Michigan Law School, there were 33 CIUs across the country in 2017. CIUs were involved in a total of 42 exonerations in 2017, according to the study.

Howard has already announced that the conviction of Wayne Williams in the Atlanta Child Murders case will be the first to undergo an in-depth review by the newly formed unit.

The office is currently searching for a director to serve as the leader of the CIU. Anyone interested in applying for this position is asked to do so through the Careers section of the Fulton County District Attorney’s website.

MILTON, Ga. — The Milton City Council approved a number of mid-year budget updates at its May 6 meeting. The amendments include new funding for public safety officials and equipment, park improvements and grant matching for a variety of projects.

The city is expected to bring in over a half-million dollars in additional revenue this year bolstered by higher-than-projected license fees, real property taxes and Local Options Sales Tax. General Fund spending increased with additions for hiring additional city staff and investing idle funds.

Just over $50,000 has been allocated for new Maintenance and Operating initiatives, including updates to the city’s contract management and GIS systems.

A request from Milton Police for two drones was also greenlit in the updated budget.

According to the budget presentation, the drones can assist on search and rescue calls in heavily wooded areas. The two drones have a combined price of $4,700 with an annual maintenance of $300.

Milton officers will also receive new license plate readers and access to updated cell phone analytic software which allows police to analyze 100,000 call records in minutes, according to the budget request.

Funds have also been budgeted for Milton Fire, including computer tablets for real-time data regarding inspections, hydrant locations and other information, and a salary for a part-time fire inspector.

Funding was also increased for trails expansion, pavement management and intersection improvements.

The capital grant fund was amended to show an increase of over $760,000 for the city’s match on federal and local grants. Those projects include trails, a lake pier and a bathroom facility at Providence Park and a Liveable Centers Initiative to study the Deerfield area.

Milton has allocated $749,000 for parks and recreation improvements and maintenance and incentivizing large residential lots.

A study will analyze possible benefits of creating a new overlay district dubbed “Equestrian Estates” and text amendments to the city’s AG-1 zoning to “make it more equestrian friendly,” according to the budget presentation.

Park improvements include a lightning detection system at Milton’s city pool and funds dedicated to ensuring the former Milton Country Club property is up to code.

In other action, the City Council approved a conditional alcohol license for The Farm at Pamelot, located along Bethany Way, for a farm winery. The applicant has already received a federal license but must obtain a city license before a state alcohol permit is granted.

The state law permits the sale and on-site consumption of wine produced at the farm or any farm winery in Georgia.

Be THE Voice campaign empowers bystanders

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Be THE Voice is commonly mislabeled as an anti-bullying program. But rather than placing its focus on the bully, Be THE Voice works to empower bystanders with the tools to neutralize instances of aggression.

That shift in focus is what has helped Be THE Voice succeed beyond what its founders had anticipated, said co-founder Debbie Cwalina.

Cwalina, along with Michael Schoppenhorst, launched the campaign in local schools in 2014 after finding support within the Roswell Rotary. Most recently, the initiative has been recognized as the Best Youth Service Project in District 6900 by Rotary Club International.

Cwalina returned to a Roswell Rotary Club meeting May 9 at Roswell Area Park to speak about Be THE Voice and how it has been helping local schools.

“Kids these days are facing so much more than we did,” Cwalina said. “Kids are absolutely at their breaking point, and they don’t know how to process it or handle it.”

A major source of these challenges, according to Cwalina, is bullying, especially cyber-bullying.

This new form of aggression takes the torture to a whole new level, she said. It is often faceless, done through anonymous channels, and can hurt students at all hours of the day. It’s not just at school or on the bus anymore, Cwalina said.

Be THE Voice tries to combat these newer issues with three major deviations from traditional anti-bullying programs: It is student-led, video-based and focuses on fun.

“Our approach is all about supporting the victim, so the bully can’t get mad at anybody who is just being kind to whoever they are picking on,” said Cwalina. “We are not an anti- anything. We are procompassion, pro-inclusion, pro-kindness.”

The videos, for example, feature fellow students as well as athletes and celebrities who talk about their experiences and offer encouragement. One video features an elementary school student who created a concept called “Sammie’s Buddy Bench” to help other students find peers to interact with.

Be THE Voice is usually implemented as a weekly, three-month campaign — a very intentional format, Cwalina said.

Several studies have shown that successful behavior modifications require repeating a specific behavior pattern for at least three months before it becomes an ingrained pattern, she said.

At the end of the three months, the participating student organizations select several of their peers to be recognized as a Very Important Voice who has made a difference during that time. Several local elementary school students were honored with this designation at the Roswell Rotary Club meeting.

Be THE Voice campaigns are available and customized for all school levels — elementary, middle and high. Some of the past participating area schools

include Roswell High School, Centennial High School, North Springs High School, Elkins Pointe Middle School, Crabapple Middle School, The Cottage School and Mountain Park Elementary.

“At the very heart of the Be THE Voice initiative is the belief that the bystander is the creation of change within their school,” Cwalina said. “Bullies don’t magically disappear after graduation. They become roommates, coworkers, bosses, neighbors. Throughout all of their life, these children are going to be in situations where they need to know how to communicate. The skills the students learn through our program will carry them throughout their lifetime.”

Ray appen Publisher For years and ray@appenmediagroup.com often with startling prescience, Bob Dylan wrote songs about what Mr. Jones did not know, understand, or see coming. Mr. Jones, of course, is us — you and me.

Facebook is now blocking seven highprofile individuals who it says violate its policy concerning “dangerous individuals and organizations.” Never mind, for the sake of this column, who the individuals are or what their organizations stand for or advocate. Nor is the point that an even higher profile individual who is also abusing social media and arguably causing far greater damage, is not being blocked.

The point is that the speed at which we are approaching a paradigm-shifting rupture in our society seems to be accelerating as we approach something along the lines of a socio-tech-info Chernobyllike meltdown. That is, the incompatibility of an open and unencumbered internet and “governance” by any country seems to be approaching the breaking point.

Technology has evolved at a far greater rate of speed than has our ability as a society to adapt to and manage it, and the gap is growing. At least it feels like that to me.

Who should be deciding who deserves access to the means of communication? Mark Zuckerberg or Donald Trump? The Supreme Court or Rupert Murdoch? Congress or Google? Government or the private sector? Who should be responsible for placing limits on the collection of personal data and the uses of that data? What are the consequences if we get that one wrong?

Whose role is it to be judge, jury and head censor? Right now, the private sector understands clearly where this trend is headed and is ramping up their billions to manage the outcome. The problem is, though, that they really don’t know for sure “what is happening”; the only thing they know is that if they don’t take action, action will be imposed upon them.

Consider the fact that the greatest means of communication in the history of the world (Facebook) is controlled by a kid who, ironically, was only born in 1984, and the influence — both intentional and unintended (2016 elections) this 35-year-old techie holds. And he is faced with figuring out how to manage

The nature of the problems we face defy known or easy answers. Yet we must have answers because the alternative is total chaos.

Consider the policy decisions confronting us: artificial intelligence, genetically modified food, industrial-strength out-of-control personal data collection and tracking, CRISPR-enabled gene editing, the real “star wars” a new age of primarily tech-driven wealth creation far beyond anyone’s — even Dylan’s — imagination and the Grand Canyon-scale, out-of-balance distribution and concentration of wealth and the unhealthy and destabilizing concentration of power and influence that wealth creates.

Think how all this has impacted the world already. Think about the Arab Spring and the half dozen governments that were ultimately overturned or severely compromised by, to a large degree, social media access. Think about the veracity and credibility of the institutions that hold our very democracy together — our system of voting, those institutions that form the checks and balances that protect all of us from tyranny and how those institutions have been deliberately and inadvertently compromised and seem now to be holding on by not much more than a thread.

One cannot avoid reaching the conclusion that we are in a dangerous place and that we must craft the most prudent and wisest response to our condition. We must re-learn how to cooperate with each other. We must all have skin in the game. We must collectively take the lead, but we also must be led by an incredibly wise and capable person – someone with the ability to process and manage incredibly complex issues and who can unite us. I don’t know if this person exists.

The issues are not going away, and allowing the trends to just take their own course is not a rational option. I don’t know what’s next. I don’t think anyone knows, but we have to get this right.

Preparing for greatness!

By LEE CHADWICK Guest contributor Every tale of adventure is the expression of a hero’s battle against overwhelming odds — a drama of the oppositional forces to the achievement of a worthy goal. Sometimes it’s dragons, sometimes it’s an evil Chadwick empire, but it’s always...difficult.

That is every tale, except this one....In this story, the glass ceiling is shattered (or simply becomes obsolete), and the oppressor becomes an ally. Also, the heroes, (except for one) are all heroines! Women who can face life as realists with the courage of dreamers.

Think of this, if you’re not intimidated by the seemingly insurmountable forces around you, whatever they are, you operate in the absence of fear. FEAR is the most disabling of all emotions and frequently negates all creative thinking.

For many years the various advantages of participating in competitive sports was limited to the world of men. So, the experience of overcoming the obstacles that invariably exist in the repetitive situations presented in all team sports was not a normal part of a woman’s experience. Which challenges require just hard work? When does the team need a more informed strategy to win? Most importantly, girls learn when to rely on insight, which may mean appreciating and optimizing the skills of another player.

Enter PEAK, the Performance Sports and Development Foundation. An honorable source of dependable leadership, PEAK is a 501(c)(3) which began in 2005 as an elite basketball summer camp. It has grown to be so much more than that. Girls from public and private schools participate in a competitive basketball league, but they also engage in aggressive academic support, leadership training, and highly varied community service projects.

The idea is to address the total child — teaching them to grow their own capabilities and their judge-

Of 134 participants from 2011 to 2018, 108 girls have signed to participate as NCAA athletes in more than 50 different colleges and universities! That is a staggering record of success! All, 100 percent, of these young women have enrolled in college with a total of $7 million awarded in scholarships, both academic and athletic. So far, participants have garnered 50 undergraduate degrees, six master’s degrees and four doctorates. One alumni, Kaitlyn Dinkins, has completed her MD at Emory after finishing her undergraduate studies at Harvard as the well-loved captain of the women’s basketball team.

Belief in yourself guarantees that you can accomplish anything when you have learned how to grow and give. The world would be a different place if we all had the strength to foster in ourselves the characteristics we admire in others.

Alpharetta passes hotel safety ordinance on split vote

By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Alpharetta officials squared off Monday over an ordinance that one council member called “cumbersome, burdensome and clumsy.”

Yet, in the end, the City Council approved a measure 4-3 that will penalize hotels that accumulate a certain number of 911 call responses in a year.

The issue cropped up earlier this year when Councilman Jason Binder recommended the city take steps to address a minority of hotels who draw a proportionally higher share of emergency responses than other overnight operations. Alpharetta currently has 25 hotels, and officials have cited only four of the operations appear to be a problem.

The latest iteration of the ordinance under discussion May 6 established three tiers for hotels based on the number of calls for service placed per 100 rooms.

Tier 1 hotels would be those that record 30 or fewer calls per calendar year per 100 rooms. A 100-room hotel, for example, would be allowed 30 calls for service a year without incurring a penalty.

Tier 2 hotels would be those with a ratio of from 31-42 calls per calendar

year per 100 rooms, and Tier 3 would be those operations with more than 42 service calls a year per 100 rooms.

Calls made by employees or agents of the hotels would not be counted.

Those hotels who fall into Tier 2 or 3 would face permit fees, ranging from $1,500 to $5,000.

In addition, the proposed ordinance required Tier 3 hotels to employ an offduty police officer to be stationed on the property during the evening hours of weekdays and throughout the weekend.

Councilman Johns Hipes objected to the provisions, arguing that most 911 calls for service to hotels involve medical issues where an ambulance is summoned. He said it was unreasonable to hold hotel operators accountable for the condition of their customers.

Further, Hipes said the security provision for Tier 3 hotels would force operators to hire a police officer, an expense that could cost that operator up to $248,000 a year, based on the standard rate.

Hipes also questioned the administrative burden of tracking whether a 911 call came from a hotel employee or a guest.

“We do not have a hotel crime problem,” Hipes said. “We may have disproportionate crime — which is a percent-

age basis — in a few hotels.”

He called the document “cumbersome, burdensome and clumsy,” placing a blanket policy over the entire hotel industry.

“I don’t believe it accomplishes the lofty goals that it sets out to do,” he added.

Councilman Dan Merkel agreed.

“This is as twisted up as a tackle box,” he said, noting that the ordinance had not been initiated by the Public Safety Department. A lot more time and effort ought to go into the wording of an ordinance that addresses crime in the 25th safest city in the country, he said.

Councilman Donald Mitchell spoke in favor of the ordinance, although he called out his own reservations. Law enforcement agencies encourage citizens to be alert and notify authorities of suspicious activity, he said. The idea that a hotel operator could be penalized for a customer’s sound citizen action flies in the face of civic duty, he said.

Deliberations on the ordinance ran close to an hour before a majority on the council voted for approval.

Binder said he’d spent nine months working on the document and delaying action was “inconceivable,” given that he couldn’t get some council members to par-

ticipate in earlier meetings to discuss it.

“I’ve jumped through every hoop, every straw man that you’ve had, and you’re right… we’re a safe city, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have issues that we can’t address,” Binder said.

The final draft, which passed on a 4-3 vote, carried an array of revisions: Emergency medical calls were eliminated from a hotel’s call for service count.

The annual permit fee for Tier 2 hotels was reduced from $1,500 to $1.

The number of hours required for Tier 3 hotels to employ an off-duty police officer was reduced from 108 to 42 hours per week.

Those hotels falling within Tiers 2 and 3 shall be required to obtain valid identification and vehicle information for all guests.

After one year of implementation, the city will perform a review on the effectiveness of the ordinance and its reception among hotel operators and the community.

Mayor Jim Gilvin joined council members Hipes and Merkel in opposing the adoption of the ordinance.

Council members Karen Richard, Ben Burnett, Mitchell and Binder voted in favor.

It will likely take a few more years before John Q. Public has realized that Genesis is now its own division. I know because seemingly everyone I spoke to during my week with the GenJOE PARKER esis referred to it as a Reporter model from Hyundai, joe@appenmediagroup.com not a separate luxury division of the South Korean automaker.

And I certainly did field a lot of questions about the G70, Genesis’ first midsize sport sedan.

No other model has garnered so much interest in the parking lot of Appen Media Group as the G70. And these aren’t really car people, mind you. Most would think a Daihatsu is a type of sashimi.

People just seem inherently drawn to this car, and it’s easy to understand why with just a quick glance. This is a stunning looking sedan.

The G70 combines sleek lines, engaging curves and eye-catching shapes for styling that is simultaneously handsome with just a hint of aggression.

The interior is just as appealing with upscale materials and attractive styling.

Opting for the Sport Package ($1,000) enhances the interior and exterior look with 19-inch alloys, copper headlight bezel accents, dark chrome grille, tinted taillight covers, alloy pedals and fantastic, quilted Nappa leather seats.

The infotainment screen sticks out a bit like a sore thumb, and it was clearly plucked from lower Hyundai models, but otherwise the G70 certainly ticks the box of a luxury presence.

It also earns high marks in the performance category.

The Genesis is offered either with a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 or the 2-liter turbo four. While critics have sung the praises of the V6 at length, I still enjoyed the four-cylinder that offers 252 horsepower.

The turbocharged 2-liter needs a moment to fully engage, but once it does, the G70 keeps pulling and pulling with hardly any interruption from the 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters (a manual is also available).

The engine does not make a particularly good noise, its more of a muted buzz, but its quiet and mellow around town.

While the 2-liter comes with over 100 fewer horsepower than the V6, the Genesis still hits the mark on sporty performance.

Give the G70 some corners and it will slice them with aplomb with responsive steering and informative feedback. My tester came with the Dynamic Package ($1,000) which adds Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires and a limited-slip differential. The Genesis’ was unruffled through quick switchbacks, sharp elevation changes and sweeping corners.

When the travels go from switchbacks to supermarket runs, the G70 has a supple, refined ride quality that irons out potholes and uneven tarmac.

Those in the front seats of the G70 are well accommodated, but the rear is a bit tight where legroom and headroom is concerned.

Safety-conscious consumers will likely appreciate the G70’s standard safety features which include forward collision avoidance, blind spot warning, lane-keep assist and Driver Attention Warning, a kind of silicon nanny that tells when its time to take a nap.

Opting for the Prestige Package ($3,000) adds a heads-up display, surround vision camera, wireless charging, heated front seats and other amenities.

Adding options can quickly balloon the G70’s price tag, but even my 2-liter tester, which came with all boxes ticked, came in at under $46,000. A fully-loaded G70 with the V6 doesn’t go far beyond the $50,000 mark.

That might seem like a hefty price for what many people still consider a Hyundai, but remember, this is not some flunked attempt to create a midsize luxury sedan that emulates German manufacturers. The G70 is a fantastic and legitimate luxury midsized and a

bonified player in the segment. It’s also the most affordable.

With superb styling, a sporty and refined ride, plenty of tech and creature comforts, upscale materials and strong build quality, the G70 might just be cause for some trembling in German boots.

But maybe not for a few years.

Those who take their BMW to the country club might scoff at the prospect that a “Hyundai” is akin to their 3-series, and subjectively better, but those who give the G70 a closer look will be rewarded. Once they correctly identify the badge, that is.

Sharing the fun of fishing This time of year, with spring springing everywhere you look, the grass comes alive with a vengeance.

In our yard, it grows about nine feet a day, so it is occasionally necessary for me to cut the grass.

STEVE HUDSON I hate cutting grass.

Get Outside Georgia, aa4bw@comcast.net Why? Because other weekend activities are at least as important as waging war on weeds.

Just this weekend, I had the opportunity to indulge in one of my favorite alternatives to yard work, which is (I’ll bet you already knew where this is going) fishing.

More specifically, last weekend, I had the opportunity to lead a “Fly Fishing 101” class. This particular class was part of the Fishers of Men fishing fellowship program at Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, and it was fun!

We started on Friday evening with some classroom time (choosing flies, tying knots, and so on) as well as some outdoor time (learning the basics of casting a fly rod).

The next day, the plan was to ven-

ture into the great outdoors to put those newfound skills to the test on actual water and actual fish.

But there was uncertainty! Would we be able to go? Dire pronouncements from every weather forecaster in the land assured one and all that Saturday’s weather was going to be somewhere just this side of The End of the World As We Know It. And yet fisherfolk are optimistic folk.

Maybe — just maybe — there’d be a window in there for us to squeeze in at least a little water time.

And as it turned out, that’s exactly what happened.

We got to the water about 9 a.m. under skies that were clear and sunny.

How about that! It stayed that way until about 1 p.m., when rain moved in and we moved out to eat some barbecue for lunch. But lo and behold, about the time we finished, the rain faded away.

So back to the water we went, and we fished until the rain started again as we were leaving about 6. Dire forecasts notwithstanding, it turned out to be a great day. And it was a whole lot more fun than pulling weeds.

Yes, God looks out for fisherfolk.

He really does. I remember a fishing trip a few years back with my friend Bob,

At the end of the day, Bob said, “Steve, this was a great day of fishing!”

“Of course it was,” I replied. “But that’s no surprise,” I added, not missing a beat. “After all, you were fishing with a Methodist.”

Bob paused a second, then said, “No, that’s not it. It’s because YOU were fishing with TWO Baptist ministers!”

Denominational considerations notwithstanding, it’s always satisfying to share the fun of fishing.

I especially enjoy sharing fishing with young people, and there’s nothing better than introducing kids to fishing as a great way to enjoy the out-of doors.

In fact, I’ll be doing just that on Saturday, May 18 at an “Introduction to Fishing” clinic presented through Alpharetta’s Recreation and Parks Department. This fun-filled workshop (you’ll

need to sign up in advance through Alpharetta Rec) is designed to help young people discover the fun of fishing, something they can enjoy for years to come.

We’ll start about 9 a.m. with a hands-on look at the basics — floats, hooks, lures, bait, and so on. We’ll learn how to cast a spinning rod, how to think like a fish, and even how to tie the basic Fisherman’s Knot.

We’ll even talk about the Ultimate Secret Bait (I’d tell you what it is, but it’s a secret).

And then it’ll be time for some actual fishing! We’ll gather up rods and bait and sunscreen and bug spray and head down the hill to the nearby lake. A few minutes later, we’ll make our first casts.

The red-and-white floats will land in the water with gentle splashes. And then we’ll wait — but I’m betting we won’t have to wait too long.

Shouts of “I got one!” will soon be floating across the water. For some, it will be their very first fish, an occasion marked by much picture taking and high-fiving and usually followed by the words “I want to catch another one!”

Officially, we’ll be done about 11:30.

But if the fishing is good, odds are some of the crew will stay beyond the official ending time. That’s fine, because that’s just the way it is with fishing — you don’t want to stop! It will be a great day. Everyone, kids and parents alike, will have fun — and they’ll be having that fun together.

It doesn’t get any better than that.

Thoughts on 2019 high school graduation To all the young men and women who are graduating high school this week — congratulations for a job well done. This is the first step of your life which will lead to you becoming an individual on your own. This is one of life‘s great transitions — leaving the nest of your youth and your home and forging a path on your own. The responsibility for your success has shifted from your parents to fully on you. Please honor them with effort, maturity, and grace. Your parents, their friends, and us strangers expect this of you.

Take this advice from someone whose high school’s memories are faded and gray. Life is long and the past and future become entangled in unforeseen ways. The easiest way through and to keep things straight is to adhere to some basic life principles: Work hard — There is nothing in life more rewarding or more self-satisfying than hard work. Roll up your sleeves and burn your youthful hours in any endeavor you fatefully stumble on.

Be Honest — There will be multiple life situations coming up which will test your moral fortitude. You will be tempted

with short-term financial or personal gains to cut corners, be deceptive, or participate in something less than honorable. Don’t do it! The person that you have to look at every morning in the mirror will know exactly what you’ve done and you will never have true peace.

Marry well — This, by far, is the biggest decision you will make. Life is a rough and tough experience with many high highs and low lows. Having a rock solid companion to support you when you’re down and keep you grounded when you’re up is critical. Choosing the wrong person makes life 10 times harder. Choosing the right person makes life 10 times easier. I don’t want to mislead you here and imply a good marriage is easy, it’s not. It takes work, commitment and patience. But, sharing life with the right person is bliss.

Smell the roses — God gave us the abundance of life and all of its beauty and majesty. Explore it fully and look at every single square inch on your way — it is amazing. You have been given five senses: touch, hearing, seeing, smelling and tasting. Each and every day starts with a cornucopia of unlimited fulfill-

ment of these senses. It is life’s most precious gift and the one you should embrace and be most grateful.

Understand failure — This is difficult to explain, but I define it as not achieving your immediate goals.

But remember, your immediate goals are only what you want at a particular time in your life. I learned a long time ago that some of the goals that I strongly coveted and achieved, turned out to be detrimental to me. Conversely, some of the goals that I failed at pushed me in an unintended direction which turned out to be the best for me. While this did not slow me down in setting big goals and working hard to achieve them, I gained appreciation for the results of my efforts either way.

Failure doesn’t bother me because it could end up being great. I don’t glory in success because I’m not sure where it could eventually lead. My advice is to work really hard and accept what comes your way.

So, for the class of 2019, congratulations again! I can tell you firsthand from a man who has enjoyed a great life that the most fun is the first 20 years from

high school graduation to the age of 40.

During this time, you’re going to start your careers or go to college, probably find a mate and marry, start a family and build a home of your own. Along the way you will find many great friends to share the abundance of this life’s experience. Keep your family close — you’re going to need them. God bless!

High School graduations begin this week Valedictorian, salutatorians announced for each school More than 6,000 diplomas will be handed out this month to the Class of 2019 across the 17 high schools that make up the Fulton County School System.

Special recognition is given to the two highest performing students, who were named valedictorian and salutatorian at each school. (Note: All information provided by the Fulton County School System).

Alpharetta High School • Valedictorian – Kylee Rahm Kylee Rahm is the daughter of LaRae and Alexander Rahm and will be attending Brigham Young University in the fall.

At Alpharetta High, Kylee was president of the Unified Raiders club, vice president of the National English Honors Society and secretary of the French RAHM Club. She was a National Laureate for the National French Contest, and a state qualifier for the Future Business Leaders of America club. Kylee was also a four-year starter and captain on the AHS varsity lacrosse team and played on the Eagle Stix Lacrosse team in the summer. Outside of school, Kylee is a youth representative for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Alpharetta and Johns Creek area), a tutor and lacrosse coach, and volunteered at Northside Hospital Forsyth.

• Salutatorian – Dheeraj Eldnani Dheeraj Eldnani will attend Georgia Institute of Technology and major in computer science. He is the son of Seema Bijlani and Deepak K. Eldnani.

At AHS, Dheeraj was the vice president of the Raspberry Pi Club, and a member of the Future Business Leaders of America club, National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, debate team ELDNANI and math team. He was selected to participate in the Governor’s Honors Program. Outside of school, Dheeraj co-founded CodingCoach and is involved in Coursera and the YMCA leaders’ program.

Cambridge High School • Valedictorian – Caroline Redick Caroline Redick will attend Davidson College or Vanderbilt University this fall with plans to major in neurosci-

ence and psychology.

She is the daughter of Tara and Jon Redick.

Caroline is a National Merit finalist, past candidate and current board member for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Students of the Year Program, and REDiCK member of the National Charity League of Milton. At Cambridge, Caroline was a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, National Social Studies Honor Society, a CLAWS mentor, and the cross-country team. Centennial High School • Valedictorian – Marianne Lemarche Marianne Lemarche will attend the University of Georgia as a Foundation Fellowship recipient and study the intersection of child development, language acquisition, and education methodology. She is the daughter of Réal Lamarche & Genevieve Garon. At CHS, Marianne was active in the Thespian Troupe where she performed in 12 shows, National Spanish Honor Society, ran JV cross country, and LEMARCHE was voted the school’s prom queen this year. She is the president of Roswell-Alpharetta’s National Charity League chapter, is a PEO Scholarship Award winner and established a tutoring and mentorship program for elementary school ESOL students.

gineering. She is the daughter of Deqing Wang and Mei Tang. At CHS, Karis was involved in visual arts throughout high school, started the Memory Project chapter at the school and was selected to attend the Governors Honors WANG Program for visual arts her junior year. She was also a four-year member of the Student Council, served as class president for three years, and was on the leadership team for HOSA (Future Health Professionals). Outside of school, Karis plays tennis, piano and guitar and volunteers.

Chattahoochee High School • Valedictorian – Andy Luo Andy Luo will attend Brown University with plans to major in biology or economics. He has participated in the schools Quiz Bowl team for the past four years, reaching national level competition where the team placed among the top finishers.

Andy plays clarinet in Chattahoochee’s wind ensemble as well as LUO with the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony. He has annually been selected to All State bands. Summer Sippin’ returns to Roswell June 1

Appen Media Group sweeps national contest

By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — It’s shaping up to be a hot summer, and Roswell restaurants are again inviting everyone to cool down with Summer Sippin’.

This annual celebration, a sister event to Restaurant Week in the winter, will showcase exclusive, summer-inspired cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy only available from June 1-July 31.

Summer Sippin’, now in its fourth year, is created by Roswell Inc, the economic development organization for the City of Roswell. The event is sponsored by Gas South this year.

“Summer is one of our favorite times of the year because we get to celebrate and promote the creativity and innovation of our food and beverage businesses through Summer Sippin’.” said Steve Stroud, executive director of Roswell Inc. “This event not only supports our hospitality industry, which is one of Roswell’s largest, it also positions us as a destination for other restaurant and craft beverage entrepreneurs.”

Patrons will be able to vote on their favorite drinks through the Summer Sippin’ app. At the end of the event, one alcoholic and one non-alcoholic drink will be crowned the Best Sip in Roswell 2019, based on their ratings.

The 2018 winners were “Rye Tai,” by The Whiskey Project as the Best Alcoholic Sip and “Tropical Blast,” by Sublime Tree as the Best Non-Alcoholic Sip. This year’s competition includes 46 participants from around the city. Some of the restaurants in 2019 include 1920 Tavern, Bistro VG, Crazy Love Coffee House, Foundation Social Eatery, From the Earth Brewing Company, Land of a Thousand Hills, Lucky’s Burger & Brew, Tap & Six, The Mill Kitchen & Bar and Taqueria Tsuanmi.

Non-alcoholic options will range everywhere from specialty iced coffees to juice blends and smoothies using seasonal fruits and vegetables. Some restaurants will also be serving non-alcoholic versions of their alcoholic drinks. “[Summer Sippin’] impacts the industry and our local economy by driving awareness of our restaurants and craft beverage establishments throughout the region, which increases overall foot traffic and summer sales for these busi-

Each user account will be synced and work seamlessly between the two platforms, allowing patrons to view an updated list of the sips they’ve tried and rated in either location, Turner said.

Braselton is jumping with activity You probably remember Braselton as the small, quaint country town somewhere northeast of Atlanta that used to be owned by actress Kim Basinger. Well, it ain’t that anymore.

Basinger and Geoff smith some business partAssurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com ners spent about $20 million in 1990 to buy a bank, industrial park, 50 buildings and 1,700 acres of land in Braselton with dreams of turning it all into a major film and recording studio. They also thought about building a theme park, homes and shopping centers, according to a 2016 article in the AJC. She may have jumped the gun by about 18 years.

There is a lot going on in Braselton right now. Starting with one of the town’s long-time crown jewels, Chateau Elan Winery & Resort is planning a $25 million overhaul, according to reports in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Renovations include a complete overhaul of 251 guest rooms and 24 suites, four new food and beverage outlets, the winery, the resort lobby and improvements to the existing pool terrace and spa. The new dining options will include a coffee and wine bar located in the lobby.

The Marc Bar will be added to the back of the winery restaurant and the new Atrium Bar will get a 40-foot Douglas fir wood sculpture.

The biggest thing happening up there will be the 500-acre, mixed-use project that will be known as Reveille. It will be just to the northwest of Chateau Elan and will include three segments.

The first will include 122,500 square feet of retail, 122,500 square feet of office, 560 units of multifamily residential, 75 townhomes, 25 assisted-living townhomes and a 175-room hotel. The second will include a 5,000-square-foot events facility, 92,000 square feet of retail/commercial space and 160 residential units above the retail. And the third will have 340 townhomes and 220 cottage homes.

The 506-acre site is where a developer had planned for a similar development in 2016 called Atlanta River Walk. It was an aggressive development that included the construction of a river flowing through the town. Not that Reveille isn’t an aggressive development for Braselton, but it is more in line with similarly large projects that are going up throughout the metro area. The other difference is that it brings with it Avalon and The Battery designer Wakefield & Beasley.

Having designed several successful and massive mixed-use communities, they likely will bring with them a certain confidence that could be helpful in winning over county officials. According to the Chronicle, they anticipate breaking ground near the end of this year.

When and if they do, they may have company. Just to the northeast of this

project, and one exit up I-85, Stolz Partners LLC of Alpharetta is proposing a 79-acre industrial, multifamily and commercial project. They are proposing commercial lots on 9 acres, 240 multifamily residential units on 30 acres, and a warehouse/distribution building on 40 acres.

Braselton is undergoing a pretty significant transformation. The town has always provided us with nuggets of interesting stories. Aside from Basinger and one of Georgia’s first wineries, the town was home to motorsports entrepreneur Don Panoz. After making his fortune by inventing technology associated with the nicotine patch, Panoz started a company that manufactured super highend sports cars including the Avezzano and Esperante. Mr. Panoz, who recently passed away, was also instrumental in building Chateau Elan, according to reports in the Chronicle.

Braselton certainly has an interesting and marketable history. These new developments will certainly add to it.

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A number of local athletes captured state championships and podium placements in the GHSA track and field state championships May 9-11 in Albany, Rome and Carrollton.

Eight North Fulton and Forsyth County athletes stood atop the podium in individual events, and and the Alpharetta boys captured the 6A team state title.

Alpharetta A year after coming up just short of the Class 6A boys team title, Alpharetta bested Bradwell Institute by five points to earn the 2019 team title.

The Raiders’ championship was led by its 4x400 “A” team of Errol Williams, Jaden Slocum, Austin Joyner, Derek Davis, Kent Cherry and Robbie Ruppel who captured the state title in the 4x400 relay. Joshua Flynn, Dane Motley, Kylen Crosby, Jackson Frizzell, Nicholas Haven and Arat Joanico placed third as Alpharetta’s “B” team.

Jamal Ellis earned a podium in the discus with a throw of 167-6 to place third.

Ellis also placed 12th in the boys shot put.

Ellis, along with Dylan Merrell Ruppel and Cherry, took third in the 4x100 relay.

Ruppel earned a state runner-up finish in the 400-meter with Williams in sixth.

Adding to the Raiders’ points total was a 10th-place finish by Sean Rager in the boys 3200 and Joshua Flynn finishing eight in the boys 300.

Gabrielle Cross placed third in the girls 400.

Blessed Trinity Blessed Trinity’s boys and girls teams both earned top-10s in team scores with a number of athletes earning podiums.

Hannah Minuitti captured the state championship in the girls 3200 with Sara Bailey in fourth. Minuitti was state runnerup in the girls 1600 with Bailey in sixth.

Jamie DeWalt placed sixth in the girls 400, and Beth Miller was eighth in the 800.

Coco Camerieri placed eight in the girls pole vault, Ainsley Hartman was 11th in the girls high jump, and Jana Barden placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 39-05.

In boys competition, Jacob Lyons earned sixth in the discus with a throw of 141-00, and Jackson Filipowicz placed fifth in the boys shot put with Grayson Gilder in 15th.

Quinton Reese placed seventh in the boys long jump and was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles. James Mancini earned points for BT’s team score with a fifth-place finish in the boys 1600 and was seventh in the 800.

Milton Milton’s Nyah Hernandez and Taylor Cushman each placed in the top 10 of the girls 3200-meters, with Hernandez finishing seventh ahead of Cushman.

The boys 4x100 relay team of William Bratcher, Uriah Mellem, William Marinich and Demarrie Taylor earned sixth.

The Alpharetta boys captured the boys Class 6A team championship May 11 in Carrollton.

Cambridge The Cambridge girls placed as state runner-up in team scores, led by Ashley Sechrest who captured the state championship in the 3200-meters, over nine seconds ahead of the field. Clarissa Beck placed fifth. Sechrest also finished third in the girls 1600 with Beck in 15th.

Ryan Jackson placed sixth in the girls long jump and seventh in the 200.

Michaela Prevallet placed second in the 100 hurdles.

The girls 4x400 team of Grace Wolf, Taya Jackson, Ryan Jackson, Kathryn Suplee and Clarissa Beck earmed fifth.

In boys competition, Jack Filan finished as state runner up in the boys 1600 and earned another top-three finish by placing third in the 3200. Connor McDaniel tied for seventh in the high jump.

Centennial Centennial’s Cathryn Gray swept her state championship competitions.

Gray won the state championship in the ambulatory discus with a throw of 51-10, secured the championship in the ambulatory shot put and won the ambulatory 100-meter.

Chattahoochee Chattahoochee had two athletes compete in finals competition, with Kevin Yang placing as state runner-up in the boys triple jump. Kyle Coleman placed third in the boys 800 and was eighth in the 1600.

Denmark Denmark earned four top-10 placements in their inaugural appearance at the state meet, led by Karthick Kochuparambil who finished as state runnerup in the boys 1600 and 800 events.

Ethan Ashley placed seventh in the

boys 3200 and Jessica Perriello was sixth in the girls 800.

Also competing for the Danes was Clarissa Kelly who placed 13th in the girls triple jump. Hannah Kim finished 15th in the girls shot put, and Eli Marshbank tied for 12th in the boys high jump.

Forsyth Central Forsyth Central’s Calan Gizelbach captured the state title in the boys 3200-meters to lead the Bulldogs. Laney Kronz earned four points for Central’s team scores by placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and Lauren Johnson was 11th in the girls discus.

Johns Creek Johns Creek senior Madelyn Horne captured her fourth podium finish in the discus and ended her high school career with a state championship winning throw of nearly 151-10, nearly six feet over her nearest competitor.

The Gladiators earned another podium spot after Anna Conroy tied as state runner-up in the girls pole vault, clearing 10-06.

Dube Anyanwutaku placed eighth in the girls shot put to add to Johns Creek’s team points total. Anyanwutaku, along with Schler Hoard, Midigan Wallace, Skye Chambers and Scout Chambers, finished eight in the girls 4x400 relay.

Madigan Wallace earned a top-five finish in the girls 800 with a 2:21.36.

The boys 4x400 relay team of Ibrahim Ndiaye, Jack Beck, Patrick Taylor, Cole Quidley, Quincy Darnell and Nick Willis finished seventh.

King’s Ridge John Robinson finished sixth in the boys 200-meters with a time of 23.46.

North Forsyth The Raiders’ Caleb Hall finished seventh in the boys 3200-meters.

Northview Northview’s Jonathan Baker led the Titans by capturing the state championship in the long jump and set a state record at 24-07.75. Baker also captured the state title in the triple jump.

Liban Ismael cleared 6-4 in the high jump to finish as the boys state runnerup. Kate Holland placed 10th in the girls high jump.

Pinecrest Academy Hogan Palmer placed eight in the boys 100.

Roswell Roswell put three athletes in the top 10, with Mallie McKenzie placing third in the girls 800, Zach Peterson seventh in the boys discus and shot put, and Jack Rhodes finishing eighth in the boys 3200.

South Forsyth Madelynne Cadeau placed as state runner-up in the girls 3200-meters, less than a second off state championship pace to lead the War Eagles. Ridvan Kazimov earned a state runner-up in the boys shot put.

St. Francis St. Francis captured two state championships, with Down Odom taking the title in the boys triple jump and Isaiah Wadsworth winning the boys 100.

Odom, Wadsworth, Jai Smith and Sam Salama finished fourth in the 4x100 relay. Callan Hasling placed 13th in the boys 3200-meters and Savannah Samuel finished seventh in the girls triple jump and sixth in the 400-meters.

West Forsyth Kyle Brown earned a state runner-up finish in the boys discus with a throw of 166-05 and placed sixth in the shot put to lead West.

Denmark, Blessed Trinity to battle in state semifinals Fellowship Christian falls to Wesleyan

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Blessed Trinity, Denmark and Fellowship Christian competed in the quarterfinals of the state tournament last week, and all three were forced to go the full distance in the best-of-3 matchups.

Perennial state championship contender Blessed Trinity was scheduled to take on Denmark in the Class 4A state semifinals May 14-15 after both teams advanced.

Fellowship Christian’s Game 3 against Wesleyan on May 9 was suspended in the second inning by weather.

Blessed Trinity downs Woodward in three games (7-2, 1-3, 2-1): Blessed Trinity reached the state semifinals for the seventh straight season by downing Woodward Academy in a Game 3 nailbiter.

The Titans held a 2-0 lead behind a passed ball score and an RBI double from Steele Chambers before Woodward plated a runner in the top of the sixth.

Down to their last three outs, Woodward put two runners on with two outs on an error and a walk. However, reliever Dominick Marcoccio earned a vital strikeout to end Woodward’s threat and send BT to the semis.

The Game 3 pitcher’s duel went to Joseph Chambers who earned the start for the Titans and allowed just two hits in 5.1 innings. Marcoccio allowed no hits in 1.2 innings. BT was held to just three hits in the game.

Game 3 flipped the script on the second game of the May 8 doubleheader.

In Game 2, Blessed Trinity trailed 3-1 in the top the seventh with two outs but looked poised for a comeback by loading the bases with two hits and a walk. However, a strikeout ended BT’s chances and forced the decisive Game 3.

Both teams combined for just seven hits in Game 2. All three of Woodward’s hits came in the second inning with the War Eagles plating three runs. BT struck first with a lead-off triple from CJ Abrams on the second pitch of Game 2.

Eric Moore got the start for BT in Game 1 and pitched a complete game allowing just four hits and two earned

runs with seven strikeouts.

Blessed Trinity led 3-1 after three innings but Woodward cut the margin to in half with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth. Blessed Trinity responded in the seventh with a two-out rally to score four runs.

Ryan Davis walked with the bases loaded, Jake Smith hit an RBI single and Trey Baker drove in two runs with a double to put BT up 7-2 to secure the win.

Denmark takes Game 3 over West Laurens to advance (9-1, 6-10, 7-2): After nearly missing out on the playoffs, Denmark’s incredible inaugural season continued May 9 with the Danes dropping West Laurens in a do-or-die Game 3.

Denmark trailed 2-0 after four innings in Game 3 but tied it in the fifth with a two-run single from Matthew Cassandra.

Football state Cambridge, Lambert, Johns Creek championships secure state tennis championships move to Georgia State Stadium

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — Milton and Blessed Trinity will go down as the only local teams to win football state championships at Mercedes Benz Stadium, at least for the foreseeable future.

The GHSA announced May 7 the 2019 football state championships will be contested at Georgia State Stadium.

Mercedes Benz Stadium began hosting the state finals in 2017, but the GHSA has been forced to contend with unfortunate circumstances and scheduling conflicts.

Just two of the eight state championship games were played at the stadium in 2017 after the GHSA chose to postpone games due to icy road conditions. Blessed Trinity’s matchup with Marist for the Class 4A state championship was delayed and was eventually held at Marist in freezing conditions with BT winning its first state title.

The 2018 finals were also delayed after Atlanta United reached the MLS Cup, forcing all eight championship games to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday. Many parents, fans and others voiced frustration over not being able to attend the games in person.

Blessed Trinity and Milton each reached the 2018 finals and captured championships in their respective classifications. Both teams were set to play Dec. 8 but instead won their titles Wednesday, Dec. 12 due to the scheduling conflict.

In a statement, the GHSA said it plans to hold the 2019 finals on its “usual” schedule of Friday and Saturday games.

Mercedes Benz Stadium will host five games Aug. 24 for the 2019 Corky Kell Classic.

NORTH FULTON/FORSYTH COUNTY Ga. — North Fulton and Forsyth County were well represented again this year at the GHSA state tennis championships with six local teams hunting title trophies. All six local teams battled one another for state titles with the Cambridge girls, Lambert girls and Johns Creek boys winning their respective class championships.

The state meet was scheduled to take place May 3 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College, but Cambridge was the only local team to capture its title before a postponement moved the finals to May 6-7.

For the second straight year Cambridge battled with Northview for the state championship. After taking a 3-2 loss last season, the Bears swept the Titans 3-0 to capture their second state title in three years.

Ansley Cheshire secured a win in No. 3 singles, Isabella Larson and Claire Giddings won in No. 2 doubles and Ann Spurka and Syndey Orefice took a win in No. 1 doubles for the title.

Lambert and Milton were chasing their first state championships when the squads began play on May 4 for the Class 7A girls title. Milton downed 16-time state champions Walton in the semifinals to earn a finals berth, while Lambert was back for the second straight year.

Cambridge girls tennis captured the Class 6A girls championship by downing region rival Northview 3-0.

The Longhorns led 2-1 when weather postponed the matchup until May 6 at Lambert, setting up a down-to-the-wire finish.

Milton took No. 2 doubles in three sets when play resumed to set up a winner-take-all in No. 1 doubles. Lambert’s Taylor Despriet and Katie Lewis took the decisive matchup 6-7, 6-4 and 6-2 for the championship.

Northview, winners of the 2017 state finals, and defending 6A champions Johns Creek met in the boys finals for a championship battle between crosstown rivals on May 7 at Medlock Bridge’s Groomsbridge courts.

The two teams met twice earlier in the season with Northview taking a 4-1 win in the regular season and downing the Titans 3-1 for the Region 7-AAAAAA championship.

The Gladiators earned the clean sweep in the series and at the state finals, winning 3-0 to repeat as Class 6A champions. The state title was Johns Creek’s third overall dating back to 2010.

The three state titles won by local teams this season continues a streak of at least one North Fulton program earning a tennis state championship every year since 2005.

Milton feeder lacrosse team wins championship MILTON, Ga. — The Milton Eagles Red Senior Select girls feeder team won the 2019 Georgia Middle School Lacrosse league championship on May 5, ending the season with a 10-0 record.

The Lady Eagles defeated Walton 13-4 for the title.

Milton led 6-4 entering the second half and scored seven unanswered goals to secure the championship. The title was the second for some players who also won the championship last season.

Walton played tough the first half to stay close, with Milton taking a 6-4 lead.

Local squads shine in gymnastics state championships West Forsyth wins third straight title

By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com McDONOUGH, Ga. — North Fulton and Forsyth County gymnasts earned multiple podium appearances at the 2019 GHSA gymnastics state championship meet May 3 at Ola High School.

West Forsyth captured its third straight championship, and Lambert, Cambridge and Denmark earned top-three team finishes.

West Forsyth and Lambert tied for the Class 6A-7A state title, but West earned its third straight championship via tiebreakers.

The Wolverines’ Ella Castellanos placed second in the all-around, fourth in the uneven parallel bars, second on the balance beam and fourth in floor exercise. West’s Olivia Blakely placed just behind Castellanos in the all-around.

Blakely was third in vault.

Lambert was led by Brianna Greenlow who stood atop the podium for the all-around. Greenlow’s all-around title was bolstered with the senior scoring a 9.6 on the balance beam and 9.9 on the floor exercise to capture first. Greenlow also placed second in the vault. Fellow Longhorn Shreya Munshi placed second in the uneven parallel bars, just onetenth of a point behind champion Molly Froman of Etowah.

Denmark’s fifth error of the game was costly with the Raiders scoring four runs on two hits with two outs. The Danes put a runner on in the bottom of the eight but failed to score.

Fellowship Christian falls to Wesleyan in Game 3 (5-4, 4-6, 20-6): Fel-

lowship Christian’s season ended May 10 with the Paladins dropping their decisive Game 3 to Wesleyan. The decisive game was suspended May 9 with the game tied 2-2 in the second inning.

Fellowship took a 4-2 lead when play resumed, but Wesleyan piled on 19 hits at 15 earned runs in the contest.

Wesleyan used five hits, four walks and an error to score nine runs in the top of the sixth inning to secure the runrule shortened contest.

Game 3 was set up with Fellowship and Wesleyan swapping walk-off wins in their May 8 doubleheader.

Fellowship jumped out to a quick lead in Game 1 with Cameron Gill hitting a home run. Cody Tapley also homered early, hitting a two-run shot to extend Fellowship’s lead to 3-0.

Isaac Bouton drove in a run in the fourth with a double before Wesleyan began its comeback. The Wolves cut the margin to 4-3 in the fifth inning with four hits and two walks.

Down to their last three outs, the Wolves opened the bottom of the seventh

with a triple and tied the game with a one-out double.

Wesleyan hit a lead-off single in the eight and took the walk-off win with an RBI single.

After squandering a lead in Game 1, Fellowship erased a three-run deficit and hit a walk-off home run to keep its season alive.

The Paladins trailed 4-1 after three innings but tied the game with a solo home run from Preston Joye in the bottom of the sixth.

Joye earned the start for the Paladins on the mound and earned two strikeouts in the top of the seventh to set up Fellowship in the bottom of the frame.

Luke Schmidt hit a lead-off single and Cody Tapley hit a two-run home run to secure the dramatic win.

Joye threw a complete game allowing seven hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts.

Bouton batted 2-3 with a double and a home run and Cameron Gill went 3-4.

Fellowship compiled a 24-10 overall this season.

Milton Social Innovators Academy to host paint drive

By AYNUR RAUF interns@appenmediagroup.com MILTON, Ga. —Milton High School’s Social Innovators Academy will host a paint drive May 18 to help local residents get rid of unwanted paint while simultaneously benefitting a charitable organization.

The paint drive will benefit Global Paints, which distributes donated household paints to developing countries.

Milton is the first public school to partner with GivingPoint, a local organization championing civic engagement among youth. Created by GivingPoint, the Social Innovators Academy is a seminar held during student’s lunch periods where they are able to learn about becoming entrepreneurs.

Denney Renee, head of Milton’s Talented and Gifted Department, explained that Giving Point organizes guest speakers to teach students about finding their passion and how to turn it into a social project.

Milton students, led by Harshita Challa and Catherine Gorman, developed the paint drive as their social innovation project for this semester.

Challa and Gorman first learned about Global Paints through their first guest speaker and CEO of the company Rony Delgarde. Challa said they chose to start their project because Global Paint’s message resonated with the academy and because the organization tackles multiple problems through one cause.

Gorman explained that Delgarde started Global Paints because of his Haitian heritage and his ability to “see the

other end of the problem” where citizens were dying from diseases.

Global Paints’ program takes donated paints from individuals and businesses, repackages them and redistribute them to those in need.

Gorman and Challa are encouraging the community to get involved in the paint drive to make a difference in the lives of others.

The paint drive will be held at Milton High School on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dry paint, oil paint cans, wood stains and rusted cans will not be accepted.

Cash donations to the drive will also be accepted and all paint and proceeds will go to the Global Paints organization.

Arts Alpharetta features ‘Fiber & Folk Art’ show

Arts Alpharetta will host the “Fiber & Folk Art” show through June 21 at the Alpharetta Arts Center, 238 Canton Street. And from 5-7 p.m. on May 18, several of the featured artists will be on hand to talk and answer questions during the show’s reception.

“In this show, we have a wonderful representation of many different artists, subject matter and mediums — everything from a huge painting of the iconic Guinea hens from Cornbread to artistic quilts, felted sculpture, art quilts, paintings and even a few pieces of clothing,” said Wendi Schutt, director for the show. “This show represents the diversity of fiber and folk art, and it is just a fun, interesting, thought-provoking and colorful show to see.”

Several pieces, for example, are art quilts, which can be considered both fiber and folk art, Schutt said.

Some of the nationally known artists featured in the show include John “Cornbread” Anderson, Brenda Davis and Howard Finster.

Cornbread, a self-taught artist, hails from Lumpkin County and typically paints animals with acrylic paint on plywood boards.

Davis was born in Tuskegee, Ala., and paints her vivid dreams. Several of her pieces are part of a permanent collection at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

Finster was a Georgia artist and Baptist minister who said he was inspired by God to design Paradise Garden, a folk art sculpture garden with over 46,000 pieces of art. Some of the pieces from Paradise Garden are now in a permanent collection at the High Museum. Finster also designed album covers for several bands, including R.E.M. and Talking Heads.

Other regional artists at the “Fiber & Folk Art” show include Catherine Ash, Maureen Engle, Michael Buchanan, Ben and Kathleen Hollingsworth, Sam Ezell and Martha Meyers. Rising artists include Korri Iracondo and Marian Cunningham.

Ron Grossman will present “The 1930s, America’s Paradoxical Decade” at 6:30 p.m. May 21 at the Milton Library.

Grossman, a former Lt. Cmdr. in the U.S. Naval Reserve and professor of history at Harrisburg Community College, will discuss the economic struggle of the decade and its rich culture in music, design, literature, film and plays.
