ROBE is a charming seaside historic township, a favourite holiday destination, with many attractions and services, some 340 kms from Adelaide. The town had its beginnings in 1846 when Governor Robe sailed into Guichen Bay and chose the site for the town. Robe became the second busiest port in South Australia. Most of the historic buildings remain and add to Robe’s ambience. A heritage walk around the streets highlight the blue plaques on many buildings. Robe’s landmark obelisk was erected in 1852 to guide ships to the harbour and it stores rocket lifesaving equipment. It has contributed to saving lives with distressed PROOF SHEET ships. As well as robe’s rugged coastline, there are sheltered beaches and the 17 km Long Beach. Lakes and bushland Robe Visitor Information Centre surrounding the town and Little Dip Park nearby provide habitat to the numerous bird species.
