MENINGIE
from Southern Ocean Road
by PHIL GIBSON
A pleasant little drive is to cross the river with the ferry by the rhinoceros and drive through the small dairy farming town of Jervois. They have a new Art Trail. And then follow the road around to Wellington, an even smaller town where there is a large Old Courthouse, a hotel and the Pangarinda Botanic Gardens to explore with its beautiful wildflowers. Then across the Wellington ferry and either back to Tailem Bend, or on to Meningie.

David Unaipon COMMEMORATED ON THE $50 NOTE
DAVID UNAIPON was an exceptional Australian, an Aboriginal man of the Ngarrindjeri people, a preacher, inventor, author and spokesman on Aboriginal affairs. He is featured on the Australian $50 note in commemoration of his work.
He gained a reputation, of being ‘Australia’s Leonardo De Vinci’ for his promotion of scientific ideas.
He was born at the Point McLeay Mission (now Raukkan) on the banks of Lake Alexandrina, the fourth of nine children of James and Nymbulda Ngunaitponi, of the Ngarrindjeri people. His father was a preacher. David was schooled at Point McLeay Mission School and described as bright, intelligent and well-mannered.
Unaipon left school at 13 to work as a servant for C.B. Young in Adelaide where Young encouraged the young David Unaipon’s interest in literature, philosophy, science and music. In 1890, he returned to Point McLeay where he was apprenticed to a bootmaker and appointed as the church organist.
After working variously as a storeman and book keeper, in January 1902 he married Katherine Carter, a Tangane woman. He was employed for years by the Aborigines’ Friends’ Association and travelled widely preaching and seeking support for the Mission until he retired in 1959. He continued working on his inventions.
David Unaipon is famous for his inventions, in particular an improved mechanical sheep shearing hand tool. Although his idea revolutionised sheep shearing, he received no financial reward. He applied for patents for as many as nineteen inventions including a centrifugal motor, a multi-radial wheel and a mechanical propulsion device. Unaipon worked on a perpetual motion machine for years. Unfortunately, he was unable to get financial support to develop his ideas. He conceptualised the helicopter 22 years before it became a reality noting it had the same principal to rise as the boomerang.
Unaipon’s contribution to Australian society assisted
DAVID UNAIPON (BORN DAVID NGUNAITPONI) (28 SEPTEMBER 1872 – 7 FEBRUARY 1967)
Aboriginal advancement and broke many Indigenous Australian stereotypes. He was an influential man, but was often refused accommodation because of his race. Unaipon’s stance on Aboriginal issues put him into conflict at times with other Aboriginal leaders. He publicly criticised the League’s “Day of Mourning” held on the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet. He feared protests would harm Australia’s reputation overseas and create negative public opinion on Aboriginal people.
Unaipon returned to his birthplace in his old age, where he worked on inventions and attempted to reveal the secret of perpetual motion. He was awarded a Coronation Medal in 1953 celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
David Unaipon died at the age of 94. A man of great intelligence and vision, he was well before his time and his achievements truly speak for themselves.
