Zeus, the supreme ruler of Greek Gods and Bacchus, the Roman God of wine and intoxication were fed on honey. At Function foods, we understand that to truly impress is to appeal to all the senses. We’re passionate about magical evenings filled with exotic tastes, rich textures, inspired music, wonderful aromas and beautiful settings. A signature delicacy in our illustrious portfolio is our honeycomb cupcakes. Try it! elcome to the Zulu Kingdom - KwaZulu-Natal which offers you a spectacular and fascinating multi-cultural showpiece flanked by the warm and indulgent Indian Ocean and breathtaking uKhahlamba Drakensberg mountain peaks. An incredible and intricate blend of cultural highlights, diverse nature and outdoor experiences makes finding the ideal setting for your KwaZulu-Natal wedding more difficult than first imagined purely because of the range from which to choose. A short journey takes you to the historic city of Pietermaritzburg, the gateway to the Natal Midlands and the charming Berg resorts. No visit to KwaZulu-Natal would be complete without a stopover at one of the game reserves, renowned throughout the world. Appropriately enough, the Zulu name for Durban is Thekwini, meaning “The Place Where the Earth and the Ocean Meet”. Apart from an effervescent ocean lined with golden beaches, KwaZulu-Natal’s capital city - Durban, offers a subtropical carnival atmosphere and summer sunshine all year round. From around the globe, day in, day out, pleasure-seekers converge on the city to play on the golden, palm-fringed sands and frolic in the warm Indian Ocean. Throughout the year, visitors flock to their favourite coastal haunts to cultivate a tan, ride the waves, eat, drink and generally have fun. Besides the sweeping beaches and calm lagoons where surfing, snorkelling, fishing and swimming are enjoyed there is just so much to do. From Durban to Amanzimtoti, Ballito to Umhlanga Rocks, to the rugged Wild Coast, the highway links popular seaside resorts in rapid succession. The road snakes through subtropical bush, sugarcane fields and rolling hills garlanded with stunning hibiscus blooms. North of Durban, the coastline stretches from Tugela Mouth to Umdloti River and is aptly known as the Dolphin Coast. Close inshore, shoals of Bottlenose dolphins gambol in the waves, providing endless entertainment with their engaging playful antics. Further up north, the game sanctuaries epitomise the best of the African bush wilderness. One of the few places where good game viewing can be enjoyed in close proximity to the pleasures of scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. Habitats from coastal dune forests to open bushveld support a wide diversity of wildlife, from the elephant to the tiny Suni and bird life is equally prolific and plentiful.
KWAZULU- NATAL
Weddings
Most game parks offer tranquil and peaceful surroundings with comfortable accommodation, game drives, hiking and walking safaris. The Elephant Coast (so named because it is home to South Africa’s largest herd of indigenous African Elephants) forms the north-east region of South Africa’s unique KwaZulu-Natal Province, stretching northward from Lake St Lucia (a world heritage site), to the borders of Swaziland and Mozambique. Between the coastal playgrounds and the majestic Drakensberg, there is an area of gentle pastoral beauty known as the Natal Midlands. The highway meanders through rolling wooded hills and grassy plains scattered with towns, villages and hospitable country Inns on lush farmlands. Fast-flowing clear rivers are frequented by anglers hoping for a record-breaking rainbow trout. Climbers scale the jagged peaks where eagles and bearded vultures fly, hikers and horse-riders follow nature trails breathing in crisp clean air and admiring the stunning views. KwaZulu-Natal is a magnet for thrill-seekers - from wave riders to hanggliders, and golfers to mountain bikers. The South Coast is nature’s annual extravaganza - with the unforgettable cast-of-millions of silver fish in the annual Sardine Run. The South Coast also has a collection of golden beaches (many with Blue Flag status), lagoons, rocky coves, grassy slopes, warm Indian Ocean waters, perpetually sunny weather, sub-tropical forests, and vegetation that draws people to it 365 days of the year. Aliwal Shoal (near Umkomaas) is a diving destination of note, while Protea Banks, further south, is deemed one of the world’s top shark dives. KwaZulu-Natal is your dream wedding destination as you have a choice of Beach, Berg or Bush and an array of specialist wedding suppliers. www.nationalbride.co.za |

pumalanga is the second-smallest province in South Africa after Gauteng and this part of the country flaunts spectacularly diverse and magnificent scenery with an abundance of wildlife spoiling you for choice and ensuring a perfect setting for your wedding. Wedding venues abound in this beautiful area. ‘The place where the sun rises’, is a symphony of grasslands, deep forested ravines, thundering waterfalls and the rich wildlife of the Lowveld. The province lies primarily on the plateau grasslands of the Middleveld but rises sharply in the form of mountain peaks to the northeast, ending in a vast escarpment which plummets, in places, into the subtropical Lowveld. Mpumalanga is a premier wedding destination. This is the land that includes the Panorama route of God’s Window, the Blyde River Canyon and Bourke’s Luck Potholes, peppered with towns such as Pilgrim’s Rest, Hazyview and Graskop. The premier fly-fishing Highlands meander twists its way through quaint little towns steeped in Boer War history like Dullstroom, Barberton, Badplaas and Waterval Boven, whilst the Grass and Wetlands region boasts South Africa’s largest fresh water lake at Chrissiesmeer. Mpumalanga is known as “Paradise” and very few places in the world can match the extraordinary beauty of the Mpumalanga Lowveld and escarpment. Mountains, panoramic passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests characterise the landscape. This is also Big Game Country, the setting for dozens of sanctuaries teeming with wildlife and birds. Among them, the world renowned Kruger National Park which boasts several luxurious private reserves on its western boundary. The entire Mpumalanga area offers exceptional opportunities for bird-watching, hiking, horse-riding and fishing. Streams once panned for gold have become the haunts of eager anglers and lazy trout. Steeped in the history of pioneers, hunters and fortune seekers, fascinating gold rush towns abound. Barberton and Pilgrim’s Rest are among the most famous.

Just beyond Sabie, the Mac Mac Falls are worth stopping for and where you can treat yourself to a swim in the crystal-clear pools. A small detour leads to Pilgrim’s Rest which is a fascinating historical town well worth exploring before continuing to Blyderivierspoort Nature Reserve. In the reserve, you can feast your eyes on the Blyde River Canyon and the rich bird life. At the southern tip of the reserve, the view from God’s Window stretches to eternity across the Lowveld. From there, it’s a short and easy drive to some of the finest private game reserves in the country and Orpen Gate to the Kruger National Park En route to the Kruger National Park through Mpumalanga, you will experience some of the most stunning scenery. Turn off the N4 to the picturesque village of Dullstroom, travel over the Long Tom Pass and its splendid panoramic views to Lone Creek Falls and the charming forestry town of Sabie. The Kruger National Park is South Africa’s most exciting African safari destination. Steeped in legend and history, this iconic National Park is waiting for you to explore its vast landscapes and incredible African wildlife. Take a journey of exploration to find Africa’s Big Five - Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo, you will discover unique wildlife on a real safari in Africa. Heartfelt African romance is the order of the day when it comes to Mpumalanga’s many wedding destinations and you will be spoilt for choice by the many spectacular wedding venues, from the Panorama Route to the famous Kruger National Park, from the quiet fishing town of Dullstroom to the country sophistication of White River and Sabie, unspoilt natural beauty abounds in Mpumalanga. www.nationalbride.co.za | 55

auteng offers a great deal of diversity when choosing a WEDDING venue and making your special day unique is about many factors, which includes great décor and a wonderful setting. Known as the ‘place of gold’, Gauteng is a vibrant metropolis with abundant options which makes this province a great choice when searching for the perfect wedding location. The sun always shines and its cosmopolitan, multicultural mix of people gives the city of ‘Jozi’ its own particular brand of ‘zing’. The wind tends to make guest appearances with a welcome breeze for most of the year, which means that a bride can virtually be rest assured that the weather will play along on her SPECIAL day! There are more trees in Gauteng than any other city in the world - some 10 million in total - and the leafy city of Johannesburg has a number of beautiful old churches perfect for traditional and not-so-traditional weddings. Johannesburg and the jacaranda-lined city of Pretoria have gorgeous botanical gardens for Wedding photo moments with breath-taking sunsets. And if that doesn’t grab you, then both cities have of the world’s finest zoological gardens - all perfect locations for your Gauteng Wedding. The dust in the region creates the most incredible sunsets

impopo is a captivating wedding destination that includes the wide and serene spaces and undisturbed bushveld savannah of the Waterberg. Disrupted only by shrubs and craggy mountains, this is eco-tourism country and home to the Big Five. This is the land of the majestic Baobab tree where myth and legend weave their way through landscapes of incredible beauty, it is possibly one of the best location options for your wedding day! The remarkable Soutpansberg mountain range stretches for over 130 km of Limpopo, the western part of which is dominated by the Zoutpansberg Conservancy and the south which includes a sacred lake and a holy forest, and is dominated by age-old traditional ways of the VhaVenda people. And if that weren’t enough to choose from, then the Valley of the elephants, lying in this unblemished corner of the continent, offers a vast expanse of Lowveld where time stands still together with the wind, and in the heat of the sun everything is unmistakably South African. Limpopo, borders onto Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana, making it the ideal entrance to Africa. Named after the great Limpopo River that flows along its northern border, this province is rich in wildlife, spectacular scenery and a wealth of historical and cultural treasures. The Soutpansberg region, one of the most spectacular regions of South Africa, should be explored at leisure by following at least one of the forest trails. Beyond the mountains, Mopane trees and giant, ancient Baobab trees dominate the plains sweeping northward to Zimbabwe making it a spectacular backdrop to your wedding photographs. The Polokwane countryside is strategically placed on the Great North Road, halfway between Pretoria and the Zimbabwean border and is an ideal

base from which to explore. Polokwane is a popular port of call for visitors en route to the Tzaneen area and the northern part of the wold renowned Kruger National Park. The options for a perfect wedding in Polokwane and its surroundings are virtually endless. Weddings in Limpopo offer many tempting opportunities: this is the province that is home to ancient kingdoms, rain queens and sacred forests, and there are numerous venues that will appeal to couples in search of an event that is truly magical. A Limpopo wedding offers the bride and groom so many options when it comes to destinations: the spectacular Waterberg; the lush valleys of Tzaneen; the family haunts of Bela Bela; and the magic and wonder of being deep in Venda territory. There aren’t many wedding venues that can beat family-friendly lodges like Mabula, a large private game reserve two-hour drive north of Jo’burg; Mopani Bush Lodge, which borders Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site; and Pafuri River Camp, at the northern-most tip of the Kruger National Park. Weddings often take place in the scenic Waterberg region of Limpopo, and venues like Marataba Safari Lodge in the Marakele National Park cater for high-end wedding celebrations (an overnight stay in a gorgeous tented camp is part of the attraction). The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is home to a number of lodge-type wedding venues, including Makweti Safari Lodge, and Shibula Lodge and Bush Spa. www.nationalbride.co.za | 67

Exhibiting a unique beauty, the province is dominated by fields of maize and sunflowers and grasslands, with a scattering of Wild Olive and Umbrella trees. On the southern border of the province lies the Vaal River, peppered with exclusive resorts ideal for weddings; and some of the country’s best angling opportunities. The Bojanala region has a fine choice of game lodges, water activities, mountain sports, hiking and hang-gliding. Truly the eco-tourist’s mecca. Also home to the Lost City Sun City, with two designer golf courses and the largest casino in South Africa, as well as the Pilanesberg National Park with healthy populations of lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo. Hartbeespoort dam and the surrounding area of Kosmos, in particular, offer gorgeous wedding photo opportunities, whilst Ifafa and Brits as well as other smaller towns in other parts of the province such as Lichtenburg, Groot Marico and Klerksdorp, are steeped in South African history. History buffs will also be fascinated by Mafikeng, and in particular its museum, which has exhibits relating to the Siege of Mafikeng, the Barolong people and the Bushmen. The towns of Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom are also of interest from a historical point of view. The province features premier wildlife destinations, among them the Pilanesberg Game Reserve and the Madikwe Game Reserve. From untamed bushveld to the sophistication of 5 star luxury resorts, the North West Province provides the complete tourism package.

hoosing the Free State as the location for your wedding, one is certain of sunshine-kissed settings and gorgeous scenery. The Free State is wedged between the Orange and Vaal Rivers and landlocked in the sense that it is entirely surrounded by other provinces - its towns widely dispersed over a golden landscape that stretches over thousands of kilometres. Despite this apparent barrenness, it has an extensive network of nature parks, game reserves and game farms and the incredible Golden Gate National Park. To stand spellbound by blue skies, horizons that extend forever, rolling hills, sandstone mountains and golden fields is to find oneself in the heart of the country. Bloemfontein, the city of Roses and one of the friendliest cities in South Africa is the Free State capital and lies roughly in the middle of the province with a ‘no stress’ attitude and some wonderful choices for wedding photography sessions. One can’t go wrong with the little ‘dorpies’ that lie in the Free State’s Thabo Mofutsanyana and Northern regions. Picturesque towns like Rosendal and Clarens, lie between the Maluti Mountains and the Rooiberge and have fast become a magnet for artists - this is a truly beautiful setting in which to get married, as are Ficksburg and Fouriesburg with farm venues that offer spectacular scenery – also perfect for capturing wedding photographs. The Willem Pretorius Game Reserve is the Free State’s major provincial reserve, offering a wealth of wildlife, excellent fishing conditions, and a wide range of sporting facilities. Kroonstad has all you need for a perfect relaxed wedding, including an excellent holiday resort. Then there is Loch Athlone, one of the major attractions of Bethlehem, which is a magnet for anglers and for those romanticists who enjoy boating. No visit to the Free State is complete without following the renowned Highlands Route which starts at Harrismith and ends at Zastron, the route is particularly notable for

the Golden Gate National Park, beautiful mountain scenery and charming country towns. In the south-west, the Gariep Dam nature reserve offers an extensive range of leisure activities including water sports, tennis, bowling, horse-riding and golf perfect for a romantic honeymoon after you have tied the knot! Wedding venues mostly range from luxury hotels to five star lodges and picturesque barns, which are all absolutely stunning in their own right. The Free State is a province with a charm unlike any other and is the ideal country wedding destination for you to celebrate the biggest day of your life. Bloemfontein and Welkom are two prime examples of towns that have boomed in terms of newly launched wedding venues and due to this it has become a major wedding destination which has also boosted tourism with an influx of visitors to the province. A wedding in the Free State holds promise of vast skies, golden fields and warm hospitality as you say ‘I do’ in one of the province’s many wedding venues. The Free State is largely a rural province, so Free State weddings can take place on a country estate, in a scenic nature reserve or in one of the picturesque towns that dot the province’s landscape. Choose between one of the province’s historic towns, sprawling farms, or picturesque nature reserves; or get married at a sophisticated venue in Bloemfontein - the capital. Like most Free State venues, these all serve up a healthy dose of fresh air, fresh produce and perfect views, often in an all-inclusive package. www.nationalbride.co.za | 71

he Northern Cape has impressive parks with endless game viewing and some of the most unique flora in the world, perfect to make your WEDDING nothing short of spectacular! It is a land of many diverse cultures, a landscape of vast, arid plains, broken only by the odd haphazard rock pile with frontier history and brave missionaries Not sure what you wanted to say here. It also offers countless challenges for the bride, groom and their guests should they be adrenaline junkies, hikers or 4×4 adventurers. Need to mention the river’s name. With constant ribbons of lush green grass along its banks that contrast with the arid surrounds, at some places it can be a 6km-wide, impassable torrent and at others scarcely a stream, creating spectacular wedding photographic opportunities. Having a WEDDING that is ‘just perfect’ calls for a unique blend of factors, not least of which is the dress ‘too die for’, a wedding planner with a magic wand and essentially a fantastic wedding venue. Whilst the Northern Cape doesn’t always make it on to the average tourist’s agenda, it should. And for weddings in particular, the semi-arid region forms a unique canvas against which a bride and her wedding party create a lasting impression. It is this very desert scene and blazing sunshine that allows for the quality of space and silence found nowhere else in South Africa. This is the land of San rock art, diamond diggings, safaris and game parks – Richtersveld National Park, Vaalbos National Park, Witsand Nature Reserve and the Tswalu Private Desert Reserve. Across this landscape flows the Orange River, intermittently a silent trickle while in other parts it carries the full wrath of a river in flood. The presence of the river has allowed for historic towns and villages along its banks that have transformed large stretches of land into fields of cotton, lucerne, dates and grapes. WEDDING venues include luxury lodges in exclusive game reserves, like !Xaus Lodge in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, where members of your wedding party will feel like they are the only people in the world. In complete contrast is the Kuruman Valley, the ‘oasis of the Kalahari’ set

on the edge of the Kalahari. Stunning scenery, a largely pollution-free atmosphere - allowing for some of the most awesome romantic stargazing under skies unblemished by buildings or man’s footprint – and the unique ability of this arid land to shed its barrenness and make way for the rich riot of colour that explodes every spring in a brilliant array of wild flowers, makes the Northern Cape such a unique wedding experience. The Kalahari Desert can be likened to a colossal sweeping river of another kind. Its’ red shifting sands that once rippled and moved are now mostly stable and home to hundreds of diverse species of flora and fauna. Every now and again the unmistakable cry of the African fish eagle rings out, or the sensational roar of a black maned Kalahari Lion carries across the landscape. Few places in South Africa convey a sense of occasion like the wedding destinations of the Northern Cape. The province’s desert landscapes are among the most remote and romantic places in the world to tie the knot! Transected by the Orange River, the province is vast and varied. Farmers grow cotton, dates and grapes on sprawling farms, lions roam the red sands of the Kalahari and the historic towns that dot the landscape embody the spirit of this uncompromising, yet hospitable land. So in short, your Northern Cape wedding venue could be an exclusive lodge in the vast Kalahari Desert; a farm on the banks of the Orange River; or a historic hotel in a celebrated city. Whatever you choose, few places in South Africa offer as many remote, unique and scenic spectacular wedding venues as this diverse province. www.nationalbride.co.za | 75

ape Town is the beautiful mother city of South Africa with awesome fair skies, gorgeous white beaches, magnificent gardens, rugged mountains and offers an extensive list of Wedding Venues and Suppliers. The entire Cape Region is also a perfect honeymoon destination and offers a wide variety of superb accommodation. Outdoor locations for wedding photographs abound and you will be spoilt for choice, as the mother city has some of the most picturesque beaches in the world with wide expanses of sand, sparkling blue, turquoise water and strategically placed boulders for those stunning photo opportunities. Picture the oldest and largest botanical garden in South Africa - Kirstenbosch, with the eastern slopes of Table Mountain as the backdrop for your Wedding in Cape Town. These gardens alone contain as many as 6,300 floral species and over 23,000 indigenous plants, so whatever your wedding colour scheme and whatever season you choose, there will be blooms to augment and complement your perfect Western Cape Wedding. The wine estates in and around the Cape all have a unique beauty of their own. Invariably wine estates lie tucked into picturesque valleys, surrounded by majestic mountains and vineyards heavy with grapes during the summer months. The Cape West Coast, until recently largely unexplored and unexploited, is a region of unrivaled beauty and geographical diversity. This area of the world is renowned for its spectacular display of wild flowers during spring, its unspoilt beaches and beautiful mountain ranges and picturesque little towns like Darling, St Helena Bay, Lamberts Bay and the fishing village of Paternoster. And if that doesn’t tempt you then the pretty Garden Route’s shadowy forests, peaceful lakes and wetlands or the Cape Overberg’s numerous quaint villages and the dry Karoo with a sullen beauty all of her own certainly will. Affixed to the tip of Africa lies bordered by two oceans - the Indian Ocean to the south and the Atlantic to the west - which goes a long way to clarify its

allure. The wild Cape Agulhas coast, the extraordinary magnificence of the Garden Route, the sparse, sweeping stretches of sand, punctuated only by rocky outcrops and fishing villages, it is not the coastline alone that draws the crowds. The constant reassuring presence of immense peaks form the backdrop to a land so lovely in parts that the emerald lakes and indigenous forests of the Wilderness, the sun-drenched vineyards of the Cape Winelands, the magnificent passes to reach the interior and the wide, windswept arid spaces of the Klein Karoo seem part of a fantasy landscape that often defies description. Stunning scenery galore with whales and dolphins frequently sited along the Cape Overberg Coast from Stony Point near Betty’s Bay along the cliff paths of Hermanus, Walker Bay, Kleinmond, Onrus, the De Hoop Nature Reserve to Witsand. The Cape Whale Coast in particular creates quite a stir and draws to our shores a uniquely intelligent and remarkable creature that never fails to ignite those who come to see them with a sense of well-being and incredible pleasure at having viewed them from so close adding a perfect backdrop for any spectacular wedding photograph. Gastronomy options in the Cape are not only world class but also unusual. For centuries, given its location on the globe, the city has been a midway point for considerable travel across the world. With all this foreign influence seeping into its culinary grain, the local cuisine is a fusion of flavors, which is as unique as it is delicious. For anyone, foodie or not, getting married and having your reception in this province will leave you spoilt for choice with all the dining options on offer. www.nationalbride.co.za | 77

edding reception venues in the Eastern Cape range from lodges, 4 and 5 star hotels, guest houses, clubs to custombuilt banqueting venues in numerous settings: beachfront, countryside, golf estates, wine estates and game farms. With the Eastern Cape as your chosen wedding destination your choices are boundless. The coastline in this part of South Africa is a paradise, particularly for leisure resorts. Finding the perfect wedding setting for your ‘big day’ is one of the many factors that contribute to your major moment and other than the wedding dress ‘too die for’ and perhaps a conjuring wedding planner, where you get married is pivotal to the success of the day. The Eastern Cape is home to both the Sunshine and Wild Coasts on the Indian Ocean, with her warm waters and idyllic beaches. Top wedding destinations such as the ‘friendly city’ of Port Elizabeth set on the shores of Algoa Bay:- Jeffreys Bay - the town of endless summer; East London with her serene white beaches and mildly tropical climate; Port Alfred’s sandy beaches that stretch for miles; and the dramatic setting of Port St Johns, are all unique and equally beautiful wedding locations. In striking contrast, the interior of the Eastern Cape embraces the arid Karoo amidst flat and spectacular landscapes with distant shadowy mountains and historical towns; the southern slopes of the dramatic Drakensberg and malaria-free encounters with African Wildlife. This is the terrain of the Addo Elephant Park and various Big Five game reserves. Towns such as Graaff Reinet, known as the ‘gem of the Karoo’, and Nieu Bethesda, home to Helen Martin’s Owl House, are set in the heart of the Karoo whilst Hogsback, on the slopes of the Amathole Mountains in the midst of Tolkienesque magical

Whether you’re in the mood for an informal seaside escape, an encounter with the “Big Five” on safari, or a choice of scintillating city diversions, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in the Eastern Cape. Scenic diversity is one of the most striking characteristics of the region, ranging from the lush, evergreen Tsitsikamma Forest to the rugged Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, the southern slopes of the Drakensberg and the arid Great Karoo. ROMANTIC CRUISE WEDDINGS The best part of getting married on a cruiseliner is the romance, as you will literally be sailing off into the sunset and your honeymoon starts the minute you set foot on board! You can start off your romantic cruise with a chilled bottle of champagne, with decadent canapés, as the ship leaves the harbour. Thereafter you can dress up in your snazziest outfits for the Gala evening dinner with the ship’s captain and have some great pics taken by the on board photographer. WEDDING PROTOCOL ON A SHIP: The Wedding Couple will be met on board by the wedding planner who will run through a check-list of the plans and procedures for the Exchange of Vows. The groom and guests must be at the location 15 minutes prior to the ceremony. The bride will be escorted from her cabin to the venue by an Officer 5 minutes prior to the wedding. If the couple has no bridesmaid or best man, a hostess will stand in to hold the bouquet during the exchange of rings. The couple may provide their own Officiant; however it is their responsibility to ensure he/she has the credentials to perform an Exchange of Vows Ceremony. If the couple requires their own music, it is to be provided on their own CD. The Bride and Groom will enter the location with processional music. The Ships Officers will conduct the ceremony using the ship’s Exchange of Vows. The couple will repeat the vows, exchange the rings and toast with the Ships Officers. A brief pause for a photo opportunity. The Ships Officers will cut the cake with the couple and present them their wedding certificate. A ship’s photographer will be present during the ceremony and guests are welcome to purchase the photos of their choice at the photo shop. HONEYMOONS A honeymoon is a traditional holiday taken by newlyweds to celebrate their marriage in intimacy and seclusion. Honeymoons by Westerners are often celebrated in destinations considered to be both exotic and/or romantic. This honeymoon period is when newly wed couples take a break to share some private and intimate moments which helps to establish love in their relationship. This privacy in turn is believed to ease the comfort zone towards a physical relationship, which is one of the primary means of bonding during
AND BEYOND
Weddings
the initial days of marriage. The earliest term for this in English was hony moone, which was recorded as early as 1546. In Western culture, the custom of a newlywed couple going on a holiday together originated in early 19th century Great Britain. Upper-class couples would take a “bridal tour”, sometimes accompanied by friends or family to visit relatives who had not been able to attend the wedding. The practice soon spread to the European continent and was known as voyage à la façon anglaise (English-style voyage) in France from the 1820s. Honeymoons in the modern sense (ie a pure holiday voyage undertaken by the married couple) became widespread during the Belle Époque, as one of the first instances of modern mass tourism. This came about in spite of initial disapproval by contemporary medical opinion (problems with women’s frail health) and by savoir vivre guidebooks (which referred to the public attention drawn to what was assumed to be the wife’s sexual initiation). The most popular honeymoon destinations at the time were the French Riviera and Italy, particularly its seaside resorts and romantic cities such as Rome, Verona or Venice. Typically honeymoons would start on the night they were married, with the couple leaving midway through the reception to catch a late train or ship. However, in the 21st century, many couples do not leave until 1–3 days after the ceremony and reception in order to tie up loose ends with the reception venue and/or simply enjoy the reception to its fullest and have a relaxing night afterwards to recover, before undertaking a long journey. In Jewish traditions, honeymoons are often put off seven days to allow for the seven nights of feasting if the visits to friends and family can’t be incorporated into the trip. www.nationalbride.co.za | 85
