About the Orchestra

Russian National Orchestra The Russian National Orchestra was founded in 1990 by pianist and conductor Mikhail Pletnev and today is widely recognized as one of the world’s top orchestras. Of its debut at the BBC Proms in London, the Evening Standard wrote, “They played with such captivating beauty that the audience gave an involuntary sigh of pleasure.” The RNO is also described as “a living symbol of the best in Russian art” (Miami Herald), “as close to perfect as one could hope for” (Trinity Mirror), and “astoundingly virtuosic” (Glasgow Herald). Gramophone magazine called the first RNO CD (1991) “an awe-inspiring experience; should human beings be able to play like this?” and listed it as the best recording of Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique in history. Since then, the orchestra has made more than 80 recordings, principally with Deutsche Grammophon and PentaTone Classics, as well as with other prestigious labels. Conductors represented in the RNO discography include Founder and Music Director Mikhail Pletnev, Vladimir Jurowski, Kent Nagano, Carlo Ponti and Vasily Petrenko. Award-winning multi disc releases include the complete Beethoven symphonies and piano concertos recorded on the Deutsche Grammophon label, and Tchaikovsky’s six symphonies for PentaTone. The orchestra’s Shostakovich project, also on PentaTone, is acclaimed as “the most exciting cycle of the Shostakovich symphonies to be put down on disc, and easily the best recorded” (SACD.net). The RNO’s charity recording of Prokof iev’s Peter and the Wolf and Beintus’s Wolf Tracks, conducted by Kent Nagano and narrated by Sophia Loren, Bill Clinton and Mikhail Gorbachev, received a 2004 Grammy® Award, making the RNO the f irst Russian orchestra to win the recording industry’s highest honor. Versions in Spanish (narrated by Antonio Banderas), Russian (with Oleg Tabakov and Sergei Bezrukov) and Mandarin (Xiao Lu and Geng Chun, narrators) have also been released.

Mikhail Pletnev Founder and Artistic Director

Mikhail Pletnev is an artist whose genius as pianist, conductor and composer enchants and amazes audiences around the globe. His musicianship encompasses a dazzling technical power and provocative emotional range, and a searching interpretation that fuses instinct with intellect. At the keyboard and podium alike, Pletnev is recognized as one of the finest artists of our time. Pletnev was Gold Medal and First Prize winner of the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition when he was only 21, a prize that earned him early recognition worldwide. An invitation to perform at the 1988 superpower summit in Washington led to a friendship with Mikhail Gorbachev and the historic opportunity to make music in artistic freedom. In 1990 Pletnev formed the first independent orchestra in Russia's history. The risks of this step, even with Gorbachev's endorsement, were enormous and it was Pletnev's reputation and commitment that made his long-held dream a reality. Sharing his vision for a new model for the performing arts, many of the country's finest musicians joined Pletnev in launching the Russian National Orchestra. Under his leadership, the RNO achieved in a few short years a towering stature among the world's orchestras. Pletnev describes the R NO as his greatest joy and today serves as its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. In 2006, he launched

10

the Mikhail Pletnev Fund for the Support of National Culture, a non-prof it organization that supports major cultural initiatives and projects, including the RNO's annual Volga Tour and, in collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, the Mikhail Pletnev Beethoven Project. As a guest conductor, Pletnev appears regularly with leading orchestras such as London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchest ra, Tok yo Ph i l har mon ic, Concer tgebouw Orchest ra, L ondon Sy mphony Orchest ra, L os A ngeles Philharmonic and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In 2008 he was named first guest conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland. As a solo pianist and recitalist, Pletnev appears regularly in the world's music capitals. His recordings and live performances have proved him to be an outstanding interpreter of an extensive repertoire. The London Telegraph remarked, "from Pletnev's fingers and brain come ideas that vitalise the music and make it teem with freshness and wit. He made the music positively leap for joy." The Times describes his playing as "born of a prodigious virtuosity of imagination outrageous in its beauty." Pletnev’s recordings have earned numerous prizes, including a 2005 Grammy Award for the CD of his own arrangement, for two

pianos, of Prokofiev’s Cinderella, recorded with Martha Argerich and Pletnev at the keyboards. He received Grammy nominations for a CD of Schumann Symphonic Etudes (2004) and for his recording of Rachmaninov and Prokofiev Piano Concertos No. 3 with the RNO and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich (2003). His album of Scarlatti’s Keyboard Sonatas (Virgin/EMI) received a Gramophone Award in 1996.BBC Music Magazine called the recording "piano playing at its greatest... this performance alone would be enough to secure Pletnev a place among the greatest pianists ever known." In 2007 he recorded all of Beethoven's piano concertos with Deutsche Grammophon, and the recording of concertos 2 and 4 was named "The Best Concerto Recording of 2007" by the Tokyo Record Academy. As a composer, Pletnev's works include Classical Symphony, Triptych for Symphony Orchestra, Fantasy on Kazakh Themes and Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. His unrivalled transcriptions for piano of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Sleeping Beauty were selected, along with his performance of Tchaikovsky's Second Piano Concerto and The Seasons, for the 1998 anthology "Great Pianists of the 20th Century" (Philips Classics). The son of musician parents, Pletnev was conducting and learning multiple instruments as a young child and entered the Moscow Conservatory as a teenager. Today he is one of Russia's most respected and inf luential artists. An advisor on Russia’s Cultural Council, in 2007 Pletnev was awarded a Presidential Prize for his contributions to the artistic life of the country. Pianist, conductor, composer and cultural leader — all are significant facets of Mikhail Pletnev's life as an artist. Yet he considers himself, simply, a musician.

Russian Easter Festival Overture Op. 36, also known as the Great Russian Easter Overture, is a concert overture written by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov between August 1887 and April 1888. It was dedicated to the memories of Modest Mussorgsky and Alexander Borodin, two members of the group of composers known in English as "The Five". It is the last of what many call his three most exceptionally brilliant orchestral works, preceded by Capriccio Espagnol and Scheherazade. The work received its premiere at a Russian symphony concert in St. Petersburg in late December 1888. The score is prefaced by quotations from Psalm 68:1–2, Mark 16:1– 6, and a third which is not identified. The tunes in the overture are largely from the Russian Orthodox liturgy, based on a collection of old Russian Orthodox liturgical chants called the Obikhod. Rimsky-Korsakov said in his autobiography that he was eager to reproduce "the legendary and heathen aspect of the holiday, and the transition from the solemnity and mystery of the evening of Passion Saturday to the unbridled pagan-religious celebrations of Easter Sunday morning". The Russian Easter Festival Overture is mainly in sonata allegro form, with a lengthy introduction at the beginning. Throughout the piece, there are a number of prominent solo sections, featuring violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, and flute.

彼得·伊里奇·柴可夫斯基 《天鹅湖》组曲选段,作品20 Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky  Suite from 'Swan Lake'  (excerpts)

“A FANTASTIC SUBJECT FROM KNIGHTLY TIMES” In March of 1877, the Bolshoy Theater presented a new ballet to a distinguished Moscow audience. This work, Swan Lake, had been eagerly anticipated, not least because its music was the f irst full-length ballet score from the pen of the increasingly popular composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The story of Swan Lake fits this requirement perfectly. It concerns a young prince, Siegfried, who encounters an enchanted swan maiden by the moon-lit ruins of a lakeside castle. She reveals herself actually to be a princess named Odette, the step-daughter of an evil sorcerer who would kill her but for the magic crown that protects her. Stunned by her beauty, the prince declares his love. Alas, however, he must return home, for the new day brings a great ball where he is expected to choose a wife. At this festival, Siegfried encounters a beautiful girl whom he takes to be Odette. Only after choosing her as his bride does he discover her to be an agent of the evil step-father, whose spell has distorted his vision. Horrifed, the prince rushes to the lake, where Odette already knows what he has done. Heart-broken, she falls lifeless at his feet. In another version, the prince and Odette overcome the sorcerer and live together happily forever. Moreover, on pu rely mus ic a l mer it s , Swa n L a ke i s one of Tchaikovsky’s most successful works, and the ballet remains a cornerstone of the classical repertory.

Program Notes Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No.5 in e minor, Op.64 I. Andante-Allegro con anima

dedicated to Theodor Avé-Lallemant.

II. Andante cantabile, con alcuna licenza

Like the Symphony No. 4, the Fifth is a cyclical symphony, with a recurring main theme. Unlike the Fourth, however, the theme is heard in all four movements, a feature Tchaikovsky had first used in the Manfred Symphony, which was completed less than two years before the Fifth. The theme has a funereal character in the first movement, but gradually transforms into a triumphant march, which dominates the final movement. According to an entry in the composer's notebook, dated 15 April 1888 about one month before he began composition of the symphony, the composer described the introduction as "a complete resignation before fate, which is the same as the inscrutable predestination of fate." The changing character of the theme over the course of the symphony seems to imply optimism with regard to providence, an outlook that would not return in his Sixth Symphony.

III. Valse, Allegro moderato IV. Finale, Andante maestoso-Allegro vivace
