Now, (drum roll please) as I announce our President Elect for 2014 – Adrienne Hart – who is currently our Treasurer. Adrienne has jumped in this year with gusto to assist IFDA in any way possible. She has been an incredible asset to us and I can’t think of anyone better to assume this position. While I’m in a “thank you” mood, I can’t forget our IFDA Industry Partners, who feel like my family. You have proceeded to hold awesome events, supported our members and have become good friends. We’re now into our 2nd half of 2013. I look forward to seeing and working with each of you to continue to make this a successful, joyful and productive year. Thank you, Karen Egan IFDA President

IFDA TAKE A SEAT benefits Hurricane Sandy and Japan Tsunami relief efforts

the first-ever international and simultaneous design exhibition IFDA chapters in San Diego, California, New York City and Osaka, Japan, held an international, simultaneous design event to display chairs made or decorated by industry professionals such as designers, artists, craftsmen, architects and students who have up-cycled existing chairs or materials into one-of-a-kind works of art. These chairs become art projects or sculptures in some cases while others can still be used as a furniture piece. This event ran on the same date (May 16th) in all areas and was promoted internationally. The chairs were on public display for 10 days beginning on May 7 during which viewers voted for People’s Choice and the winner at each location received an award. At the close of the show a gala was held and all chairs were sold.

The funds raised support Hurricane Sandy Relief, Japan Tsunami Relief and professional development for the participating IFDA chapters. Participating designers received recognition for themselves and their company in both print and online media and pictures of all the chairs will also be featured online.

Looking for a Few Good Fellows!

A Fellow is an IFDA member who is recognized for service both in the Association and to the community, and for contributions to education and service to our industry. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member. The IFDA Fellow has served in many Board positions, assisted on Committees, and possibly served as a Chapter President and/or in a position on the International Board of Directors. Community service is also a component for completing the necessary criteria to qualify for Fellows. All of these positions and activities accumulate points that contribute to the awarding of the Fellows designation. IFDA members work such long and tireless hours to achieve great goals in our Chapters and our communities that they deserve an award. If you feel that you may have achieved this level, I encourage you to enlist the assistance of your local Chapter’s Fellows Chair and start compiling your application. You will be surprised at how much you have accomplished. Your application should be submitted to your Chapter’s Fellow Chair who will review it and forward it to IFDA Headquarters. The applications must be received by Headquarters for review no later than September 30, 2013. Eligible members will need the following documents to complete their application. 1) Fellows Application (pdf) 2) Fellows Submission Rules (pdf) 3) Fellows Eligibility Points List (pdf) 4) Fellows Points Verification Form (pdf) Once the Fellows Committee has reviewed all the applications, we will inform those that have met the requirements by December 1, 2013. The new Fellows will be recognized and honored at the next Symposium. For more information on qualifications for Fellow please consult the website ( http://www.ifda. com/fellows ) or email Linda Kulla, FIFDA, Fellows Chair at LSKulla@optonline.net. 2013 Fellows Committee Linda Kulla, FIFDA, Chair, New York Chapter Judith Clark-Janofsky, FIFDA, N. IFDA Partner Sundrea Design Studio Wins Again… Association of Professional Landscape Designers Names 2013 International Landscape Designer of the Year The Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) announced its Annual International Landscape Design Awards program winners. Entries were submitted from Landscape Designers throughout the United States and Internationally. The judging panel, which was comprised of well-known experts in the field, granted 8 Gold Awards and 19 Merit Awards in this year’s competition. Each year, APLD also bestows the coveted title of “Landscape Designer of the Year” to the highest valued entry in this competition. The 2013 APLD International Landscape Designer of the Year is Paul Connolly, APLD, of Sundrea Design Studio in Tucson, AZ, for his project titled Rio Ranch. Connolly transformed this small uninviting patio into a spacious covered outdoor living, dining, and entertaining area. Paths lead from the covered patio to a spa and outdoor fireplace. All patio areas were creatively designed around existing native trees and thoughtfully set into the natural slope of the lot. Cactus were salvaged and transplanted within the backyard. Plant selections consist of native cactus and wildflowers which were carefully chosen and placed so their mature growth size would fit the space thus greatly reducing future maintenance. The distinct outdoor rooms are unified by flagstone patios, interconnected by gravel paths and surrounded by plants. This interaction between elements creates a harmonious spatial dynamic that flows rhythmically and cohesively throughout the landscape. Connolly will be receiving his Award at the APLD International Design Conference being held August 2 – 4, 2013, in Detroit, Michigan.

Color for Special Needs BY BETH RUTLEDGE, Originally published in STIR®, a resource for color and creativity. Trish Buscemi uses color to help children with cognitive learning challenges and their families create calming, kidfriendly interiors. During the years that Trish Buscemi’s corporate career was flourishing, her creativity languished like an understudy waiting for the play’s star to call in sick. “I’ve used color my whole life,” says Buscemi, the owner of Colors Matter, a painting and color consultation company specializing in custom interiors for those with cognitive learning challenges such as ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s, Autism and Down Syndrome. “Now with Colors Matter, we’re using color to help — it’s almost always a creative process.” Buscemi, mother to an adult child with ADD and Tourette’s, lives in Conroe, Texas, north of Houston. When her sister moved there, too, the pair launched the residential and commercial painting business Two Sisters Painting, which became the springboard for Colors Matter. Raising a child with special needs has given Buscemi personal insight that enriches her status as a certified color consultant. Beyond understanding light’s impact on a space and the way pigments alter hue, she has first-hand knowledge of how room colors can affect behavior. “Colors matter. They affect us in every way, every day. They sway moods, provoke thought, stimulate conversation and appetite. They calm us, cheer us, rev us up and even depress us. Color is emotional, cultural, sensory and cognitive,” says Buscemi. Color beyond aesthetics “Parents of children with special needs really struggle with color choices,” says Buscemi. During conversations with these clients, she’s often asked to deliver “feelings” along with color recommendations and a finished product. Which colors inspire peace and calm? Which are invigorating and energizing and help stimulate learning? Buscemi believes color affects neuropathways in the brain, creating a biochemical response. Triggering the desired response in the particular individual is key. For example, Buscemi has found that blues, greens and muted brown tones tend to be great choices for both adults and children with ADD and ADHD. In the four years she’s been helping transform spaces for people with cognitive learning challenges, she’s come to realize that special-needs clients are her passion. “The whole family feels it when rooms aren’t working,” says Buscemi. “So when rooms are working, it’s so rewarding and transformational.” Long before colors are selected, Trish asks dozens of questions, ranging from how often spaces are used to when lights are turned on to whether a child is artistic, athletic, a gamer or maybe a musician. In a consultation with a boy with Asperger’s, Trish learned that red was a favorite color and one he wanted in his bedroom. But Trish knew that using it on the walls could cause undue agitation. Instead, she suggested a “soothing blue with a yellow stripe. Red was used just in accents.” Trish ensured lighting was well-placed and gentle, and the result was a space where the boy felt comfortable playing, reading and sleeping. In creating calming, kid-friendly interiors, Buscemi makes a point of talking with parents about the importance of active rooms where it’s okay to be loud or messy. “Rooms where real living can take place are essential,” says Buscemi. The color of change The team at Colors Matter has lent their expertise to projects for Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Montgomery County Habitat for Humanity All-Women Build, and Trish is proud to do pro bono work every year for families with kids with cognitive struggles. As research and information about cognitive disorders grows, so does the support community. Colors Matter is tickled pink to be part of it. After she’s changed the lives of so many through color, you might expect Trish to have a favorite color of her own. She doesn’t, although she has an affinity for Sherwin-Williams Rainwashed (SW 6211), a gray-green hue that’s “versatile and great in a bathroom or on an accent wall.”

Event Recap Buy Local Series at Helser Brothers Our April event at Helser Brothers kicked off a multi part educational program that we called our “Buy Local Lecture Series. It was held at various local manufacturers or fabricators across the Valley and proved to be a wonderful time to learn about these local companies that we are so fortunate to partner with. Jay Helser was on hand, as well as local favs Leann and Rory, to give an inside look at the new products and finishes available and tell us a bit about the quality workmanship and customer service you will receive when you buy from Helser. Thanks to all who attended, it was a great experience.

Event Recap Mar Buy Local Lecture Series at Underfoot For our fourth “Buy Local Lecture Series” of the year, we went “Around the World In Our Own Backyard” at Industry Partner Underfoot. Owners Gary and Shelly Lester played host to an evening of education as we learned about flooring, rugs and surfaces from all over the world. They showed us rugs made from Indian silk Sari’s and tiles made from Vietnamese boat wood among many other things. If you haven’t been into their showroom lately, you must stop in and see the huge selection of hard surfaces they now carry. Another benefit of being local, Underfoot can do many fabrication processes right on site. If you have a flooring challenge, they’ll have a solution. Thanks again to the Underfoot staff for an informative and enjoyable evening!
