The Unsung Hero Award is presented to an IFDA member who has gone above and beyond in any capacity. During 2012 Mark LaPalm held all of these characteristics. When IFDA was preparing for TABLEAU, Mark volunteered to co-chair and assist with the Tableau volunteers and set up Drop Box to aid with Tableau communication and updates. Along with assisting with Tableau, Mark also designed and entered a table and won the “Most Sophisticated” award. With Tableau coming to an end, Mark approached our board with a wonderful concept of revamping our IFDA kiosk at the Home Design and Idea Center on Pima Rd. in Scottsdale. He proceeded to redesign the space and held educational design events that were open to the public every other Saturday. His programs were met with great success and attendance was growing. Unfortunately, the IDEA Center closed its doors in April, but I can assure that Mark’s doors will not close! We applaud Mark for his creativity and forward thinking as well as his willingness to always pitch in and assist. Mark is, much deservedly, our 2012 Unsung Hero! Karen Egan, IFDA President

IFDA Members on the Move… Two IFDA Designers participate in local fundraiser! The first annual Kitchen and Tasting Tour to benefit Lymphoma Research Foundation, held on February 23rd, was a huge success thanks in part to two of IFDAs Members; Adrienne Hart of ModaScapes Interior Designs and Mark LaPalm of Blue Desert Interiors. Sherry Baker of the Arizona Lymphoma Research Foundation got the idea to add tablescapes to the tour when speaking with Mark LaPalm after one of his design seminars at the now closed Home & Design Idea Center. He put her in touch with Karen Egan, president of IFDA AZ, who was very excited to extend an invitation to participate to our membership. “It was really an honor to have participated in this event to raise both awareness and funds for lifesaving lymphoma research. It was even more exciting to have been selected to do the largest home on the tour! At that point, I knew I had to bring something really over the top!” said Adrienne Hart. “It’s always exciting to have no limits on creativity!” “Giving back to the community is one of our core beliefs at Blue Desert Interiors, so of course we said ‘Yes’ when Sherry asked us to help the Foundation. As each dining space was prefurnished, we were a little apprehensive,” said Mark LaPalm, “but being given a home designed by world-renowned architect, Pete Boon, was a perfect match for our style and made for a wonderful combination.” Over 350 ticket holders toured six upscale homes in North Scottsdale where they experienced culinary delights provided by local chefs and viewed beautiful tablescapes created by Adrienne and Mark, as well as two event planners and two florists. The event raised $15,000 in its first year and they are already planning for next year.

Professional Associations: Is There a Difference or Is It All Just Alphabet Soup? IFDA, ASID, IIDA, AIA, NKBA, IDS, WCAA, WFCP – if you’re confused, you’re not alone! Is there a difference or is just so much alphabet soup? Why choose one versus another? All good and important questions! If you are already a member of a professional organization, let me congratulate you. This identifies you as an individual who seeks continuing education, the company of colleagues, a desire to enhance your profession, a forum for discussion, opportunities to network within the industry and much more. However, if you are not currently a member of a professional association, or if the one you’ve joined isn’t meeting your needs, we would like to tell you about IFDA. The International Furnishings and Design Association (IFDA) is an all-industry association whose unique membership comprises interior designers as well as ALL related professionals including showroom managers, manufacturers’ representatives, window treatment fabricators, furniture manufacturers, artists, educators, shelter publication writers and editors are examples of the broad spectrum of professional members. IFDA is the driving force, through its 66 year history of programs and services, to enhance the professionalism and stature of the industry worldwide. As the “voice” of the total furnishings and design industry, IFDA provides its members with the tools and resources to enhance their businesses. IFDA offers unique networking opportunities because the professional members are a cross-section of the entire industry thereby allowing members to meet a variety of providers. The potential for cross referrals is high in addition to helping establish a relationship with trusted vendors in all fields. IFDA welcomes members from every facet of the furnishings and design industry. Our Student Member program stands apart because we do not have student chapters. Rather, Student Members are part of the professional chapter in their local area which offers both educational and networking benefits. It is a great way to make contacts for the future after graduation. Recently, a new category of membership has been established called Associate Member. Open to any graduate of a 2 or 4 year higher education program that applies within 1 year of the date of graduation, the membership period is valid for 2 years at a reduced rate. Our Professional membership is a cross section of many areas of expertise and, because of this fact, there is no specific educational requirement. Members are executives and companies professionally engaged in the design, production, distribution, promotion, communication or education in the furnishings and design and/or related industries. An eight point Code of Ethics governs professional conduct within the Association and all allied organizations. We are proud of the IFDA Educational Foundation which offers the greatest number of grants and scholarships of any furnishings and design industry association. The IFDA Educational Foundation is the philanthropic arm of IFDA dedicated to the support and service of the home furnishings and interior design community. The Educational Foundation, a non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c)3 organization, raises and distributes funds in the form of grants and scholarships to foster educational activities benefiting individuals and/or institutions in this industry. Locally, our 16 chapters across the country offer a variety of educational programs, networking opportunities, social, and community service activities. There is also an active chapter in Osaka, Japan. IFDA offers a business exchange program between the U.S. and Japan available only to members. Our national organization produces education conferences that bring together experts and colleagues from around the world for targeted business development courses and cutting edge information on the changes to, and new products in, our industry. Lastly, the IFDA is also a fun and friendly group of professionals. If you join, you won’t be a stranger for long and member participation is both desired and welcomed. IFDA is a professional association where you can have a voice and make a difference. Please think about joining us. For more information visit ifdaaz.com.

Partner News Dunn Edwards exclusive paint sponsor for the 2013 Pasadena Showcase House of Design

Dunn-Edwards is proud to -- once again -- be the exclusive paint sponsor for the 2013 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This is the event’s 49th year as the annual fundraiser for Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA). Dunn-Edwards has been the paint sponsor for more than 46 years and, this year, welcomes another home into the Showcase collection. As one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the country, Showcase will highlight the work of residential architect Roland E. Coate, Sr. at a 1941 residence located in Arcadia, California. Open April 21 through May 19, 2013, this historic home will be transformed and fully renovated into an extraordinary jewel by renowned designers from throughout Southern California. Originally built for prominent furniture executive C. Lawrence Barker, of the former Southland furniture company, Barker Brothers, the estate is a Monterey Colonial residence that features a number of Colonial Revival subtypes, a mixture that the architect was known for in his attempts in creating a native “California Style.” The estate is a two-story, 10,433-square-foot home that features several gardens, a tennis/basketball court, a swimming pool with spa, and a pool house set on 1.79 acres. PSHA is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization in California whose members donate time and resources to the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Founded in 1948, the PSHA adopted the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as its annual benefit in 1965. Event proceeds support local arts and music programs with gifts and grants, the annual Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert, the Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile, and the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition.

Event Recap Mar Spring 2013 Market with Vicente Wolf at ADC

The Spring 2013 Market with Vicente Wolf at ADC was great fun. Vicente Wolf, world-renowned interior designer was awe inspiring with his unique perspective on design, light and texture. Vicente shared many of his stories with us on how he is inspired through his travels and limitless creativity guided by integrity and simplicity. He also hosted a wonderful book signing while we enjoyed lunch in the David E. Adler showroom. To end the day, Inside Out hosted a wonderful happy hour with one of the most beautiful hors d’ouvre tables ever seen!

In the afternoon we had a wonderful lesson in chair construction, or “deconstruction” presented by A. Alex Shuford, III, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Century Furniture. This presentation was a visual and verbal exploration of the materials and techniques found in fine upholstery. By deconstructing a chair Alex was able to “peelback” each layer to provide a detailed understanding of how every component works together to provide support and quality. For many, this was valuable sales tool when specifying custom merchandise.
