Next Quarter Events October 9 Referral Business Event October 17 Colormix 2014 by Sherwin Williams

President’s Message As our summer comes to a close, I hope all have enjoyed yourselves, as well as looking forward to the cooling weather of October, personally, one of my favorite months. Our IFDA Chapter has planned some wonderful events for the last quarter of 2013. Notifications have already begun – be sure to keep an eye out so as not to miss an event and the camaraderie of friends and associates. Last week Adrienne Hart, President Elect 2014, and Dede Radford, IFDA Member/Sponsor/National Board Member/and Fellowship recipient, and I flew to Philadelphia, IFDA International Conference, for three grueling days.

October 29 Partner Roundup November 7 Valley Light Gallery Event December Holiday Party

As this was my third trip, it was wonderful recognizing so many faces from IFDA Chapters across the country and catching up with them. Our evenings were spent visiting and eating! It was obvious that Adrienne fit right in with other attendees. The two pictures below were taken on breaks. One, I believe is self-explanatory of Adrienne getting acquainted with guys and gals. The one of Adrienne and me was taken with Kent McKamy, the featured speaker on our last morning in Philadelphia. His premise, Time Management Matters – Urgent/not Urgent – what’s important and what’s not; high payoff activities; doing the right things and doing them in order of priority; strive for effectiveness; plan and set goals; crisis mode management; gain benefits and avoid losses. And always – things that contribute to our vision, mission, purpose and values. It was a great power point presentation with a wonderful speaker. Last, but not least, New Policies have been implemented for 2014 that will impact both our Membership and Industry Partnership. We will be sharing these when we have the logistics coordinated. It’s all good so keep a lookout for the future. Thank you, Karen Egan IFDA President

Sunbrella Goes Silver! It’s amazing what has happened to Sunbrella in the last l0 years, we have watched it evolve from awning to armchair, with new novelty yarns, like boucles and chenilles, and elegant embellishments like decorative tassels, braids, and trims. What's really exciting is that Sunbrella’s new soft, subtle hand and chic styling, goes hand in hand with our inate desire to make the outdoors look more like the indoors, Sunbrella's secret is in the solution-dye technology that introduces tough-but-touch-me-soft fabrics that shrug off rain, UV rays, and pizza stains with equal ease. The pigments are embedded in the fabric itself so the color goes all the way through which is why it is our number one pick for outdoor fabric here in the desert. With 350+ days of sun each year, we need a product like this available to us.

We must thank Spokesman/designer/ IFDA Trail Blazer (2011) Joe Ruggiero of the Southern California Chapter for bringing Sunbrella on board this year as IFDA’s International Silver Sponsor.

New Tech Houzz is rapidly becoming the best app to showcase designer work!

CNN states: “What makes the app more than just pretty pictures is the information that goes with each image. You can click to see the companies and people who worked on a project, ask questions about how they did certain things or where to find furniture or other products.” Browsing high-resolution photos is the initial draw. You can save favorites into Ideabooks for later -- for example, a selection of outdoor wall gardens or midcentury modern living room chairs in a particular shade of yellow. But for Houzz, the money comes when people take action. Interior designers, contractors and architects upload many of the images. There are more than 250,000 such professionals active on Houzz. What makes the app more than just pretty pictures is the information that goes with each image. You can click to see the companies and people who worked on a project, ask questions about how they did certain things or where to find furniture or other products. The people who post images are good about providing answers. There also is a directory of professionals with reviews, sort of an Angie’s List but with splashier visuals. Going local is a key part of Houzz’s business. If you see a dreamy spread in a magazine such as Dwell, the information disclosing who worked on a house is only useful if you live in that area. Houzz shows examples of work from people close enough to hire, divided into 425 metro areas. Some interesting tidbits... • Houzz caters to people who like photos of beautiful homes and dream of improvement projects • Houzz’s sites and apps attract 15 million users a month and it draws people in with stunning photos and adds how-to guides and reviews of professionals Now “Houzz” that for an app you shouldn’t live without!

New Tech On Trend with Business Technology By Charlene Kingston, IFDA Social Media

Just like the design world, there are trends in business technology. The biggest trend this year is mobile. Are you tapped into this important trend with your design business? Mobile means many different things. First, mobile means handheld and wire-free devices like smart phones and tablets (think iPad). These small computers give you instant access to the internet and your customers almost anywhere in the world using wi-fi and cell phone networks. Second, mobile means mobile computing, using your mobile device to work both inside and outside of your office. With a mobile device, you may go directly to the internet using a browser (Safari and Chrome are two popular ones) or using a special program called an app (short for application). There are apps for almost every popular website and computer program today so you never have to leave your work world behind. There are apps that make it easier for you to your design work outside of your office. For example, Sherwin-Williams released a free Chip-It app that uses your mobile camera to take a picture and then show you the Sherwin-Williams paint colors it finds in your picture. Third, mobile means mobile marketing. In our fast-paced world today, you can no longer assume that people are interacting with your online business presence through a desktop or laptop computer. You need to make sure that your website works and looks good on smart phones and tablets. You also need to redesign your emails for reading on a mobile device.

Event Recap

Las Vegas Market With it so quiet in August here at home, a handful of Arizona chapter members decided to meet up at the Las Vegas Furniture Market and really “Do it Right”!

From left to right- Lissa Steele, Adrienne Hart, Jan Braden, Michael Hutchings, Terri Welch and Joy Gentner.

One of our goals for attending was to stay ahead of the curve on new trends in the design world. But another was to really meet our local manufacturer representatives and start building stronger relationships that will in turn, help our businesses grow! In between shopping the new and expanded offerings of the 1.1 million square feet of furniture, home décor and gift, we also attended four CEU seminars and played some games. One of the games we played addressed our 2013 program series of “Buy Local” where participants were challenged to find and meet Arizona based manufacturer representatives. After all, supporting them supports our local economy. This, as it turned out, was a great way to experience market and have a specific goal in mind! As our participants traveled through those 3 packed buildings, they were happy to oblige to be the objects of the scavenger hunt and were able to connect with some fun and interesting reps and see new products!

Summer 2013 One of the greatest benefits of attending Las Vegas Market is that you never have to go very far to find food or drink and in this case, a great party. Feizy turned 40 and celebrated in true 70’s fashion with a live cover band and everyone from the company if full regalia.

Early reports showed record breaking attendance and we saw lots of evidence of that every where we turned! This is was the scene at the Grand Kick Off Party on the first night. Once home, we gathered again for “after market, after party” to review photos and share experiences and receive prizes for participating in the fun! Much thanks to Adrienne and Gary Hart for hosting a lovely party. Here’s Gary Hart (husband to President Elect, Adrienne Hart) traveling the Grand Plaza to gather members at the Grand Kick Off Party.

Save the date for the Las Vegas Winter Market January 26, 2014 Where we will have even more educational and entertaining events planned. There’s even talk about chartering a luxury bus and traveling together, some exclusive behind the scenes look at the World Market Center, and being joined by other IFDA Chapters.

Event Recap Buy Local Series at Pentimento In September, our 5th “Lecture from our Buy Local series was a great success. We had a wonderful time touring the Pentimento fabrication warehouse, admiring the beautiful pieces hanging in their showroom and learning so much from Chris West, who is a true lover of lighting and a great teacher. Much thanks to Ronna and Chris for hosting us and showing us how great it is to have them as a local resource!!

Give Back IFDA AZ Gives Back to the Child Crisis Center Did you know there are over 95 reports made of child abuse in AZ every day? Did you know there is a safe haven for those children who have experienced abuse, abandonment or neglect right in our own back yard? The Child Crisis Center has been a temporary home for over 12,850 local children ages 0-11 since 1981 which is why the IFDA AZ Chapter has chosen them as our local charity this season. We have committed to assist in some much needed paint and décor as well as collect goods and raise money for their facility’s use. The staff at Child Crisis Center is overwhelmed by our generosity and enthusiasm so your participation is crucial in making a difference in the lives of these children. There are several ways that you can help: 1. We need volunteers of all skill levels to help with several paint projects at the facility: we will be painting all four of the 3-7yr olds bedrooms with a fun design in happy colors, creating an art display wall, and painting themed murals on two different playground walls. 2. Partners will showcase donation boxes and informational flyers about the charity in their showrooms to collect items from Child Crisis Center’s wish list, which can be found at http://www.childcrisis. org/images/new/CombinedWishLists.pdf. 3. Donation boxes and flyers will also be present at each of our events. 4. All event invitations will carry an option to donate cash to Child Crisis Center and you can bring money to the event. After touring the facility and working with the staff at Child Crisis Center, we are thrilled to be able to bring some creativity and positive energy into such a deserving charity - and just wait until you meet these kids!
