BARCELONA: STRATEGIES FOR EVOLVING A COMPACT CITY

04

The semester-long graduate urban design studio explored possible strategies for evolving the city of Barcelona for long-term sustainability with an emphasis on the 22@ Innovation District. The studio built upon the existing plans for 22@ as well as the ongoing work by BCN Ecologica focused on the creation of Superblocks and the reorganization of the city’s bus network. Our work adopted these proposals, elaborated on them, and tested their implications for urban open space in three sample areas. In addition, the studio explored how shifts in patterns of urban mobility could be integrated with the future development and density of the city. Using parametric tools the studio simulated a variety of scenarios for increasing density for areas adjacent to transit, as well as generally upzoning some parts of the city such as 22@. These scenarios also simulated a version of a cap and trade transfer of development rights as strategy for integrating new and old development while encouraging a mix of uses and overall affordability. This document is the result of a two week research trip followed by a 10-week studio.

MAXIMIZE SOCIAL +ECOLOGICAL UTILITY OF OPEN SPACE PRIMARY STREET

SECONDARY STREET

Primary Streets run along the edges of defined Superblocks.

All Secondary Streets must remain open to limited shared use. They must remain accessible to: • Emergency vehicles; • Limited delivery vehicles; • Vehicles for individuals with limited mobility; and, • Users of private parking garages. Limited space will be provided for on-street parking.

SITE LOCATION: SMITHFIELD STREET, DOWNTOWN AREA, PITTSBURGH, PA. DESIGN CONCEPT: SMITHFIELD STREET AS A CONNECTOR CORRIDOR DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS: • Maximizing the density on the street to envision a busy transfer hub • Removing Vehicular traffic from the street making way for a two way Bus lane and a two way bike lane. • Creating transfer nodes with intermediate pedestrian activity zones. • Improving the over all quality of the street and making it more livable, commutable and a smart street.

SMITHFIELD CONNECTOR CORRIDOR VISION

Downtown Pittsburgh has been undergoing remarkable transformation. The downtown area offers countless events and hot spots to experience. Several new developments are in the pipeline with the aim of bringing the community together and transforming the Downtown Business District into a cultural and social hub.

THE DAVID L. LAWRENCE CONVENTION CENTRE

These developments are strategically located, starting with the Point Park University on the west and the Bluff to the east. Coupled with the existing distinguished areas in the region, these developments form a zone of influence which will change the city’s landscape for better. Smithfield Street, is located right in the middle of these developments and is apt to be envisioned as a connector street. Smithfield Street as a connector street will act as a major thoroughfare in developing connections between these areas and linking them to the rest of the downtown. In conceptualizing Smithfield as a Connector Street, following street components have been incorporated in the vision, • 2 Way Bus lane • 2 Way dedicated Bike lane • Widened Sidewalks with street infrastructure

WEST CARSON STREET

Smithfield Street was once a bustling street at the heart of Downtown, Pittsburgh. Though Pittsburgh has undergone a radical transformation over the years, Smithfield Street still has all the makings of a vital, vibrant street. The historic Smithfield Street Bridge is the only pedestrian accessible bridge that can take you across the Monongahela from Downtown. With developments taking place in Station Square, and rejuvenation of the Cultural District, the Smithfield Corridor is the primary connection between these two magnets. Presently the Corridor is the only way through which buses from the South connect to Downtown. Smithfield Street plays an important role in acting as a connector for various means of transportation, be it mass transit, bicycle or even pedestrian. The goal of the vision is to recognize its importance as a connector and maximize its latent potential and thus in doing so to breathe life back into the corridor and the downtown region.

CORRIDOR VISION PLAN

The corridor consists of a two way dedicated bus land with a two way dedicated bike lane, In order to resolve the conflict between the location of the bike lane and providing easy access for the bus passengers to alight and get off , a bus bulb has been provided. Blocks where the bus stops are located have a single avenue of trees while the other blocks have trees on both sides along with 12’ side walks.

LANDUSE

The design proposal aims at having a dense intersection with functions that demand heavy vehicular flow. Hence a mixed use development is proposed towards the intersection. To create pleasant walking experience along the sidewalks, the street frontages are dedicated for retail purposes to invite more pedestrian activity. Residential use is more concentrated between the Pocusset street, Forward Avenue and Murray Avenue. The design also intends to provide residential along Mayburn street to compliment the existing residential across Mayburn street.

One of two major hospital networks in Montreal, CHUM is associated with the Universite de Montreal—a prominent teaching hospital and the amalgamation of three sites covering two city blocks. This Public-Private Partnership initiative will be the largest P3 project in North America to date. The program promotes an active street life by harmonizing with the neighborhood context, re-establishing a link with old Montreal’s historic quarter, and thoughtfully incorporating heritage buildings. With 2.5 million sf serving 345,000 ambulatory patients, 22,000 inpatients and 65,000 emergency patients each year, the hospital will also accommodate 770 single-patient rooms, ambulatory and diagnostic centers, surgery, intensive care, clinical laboratories and a research centre that encompasses 35 medical disciplines.
