SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.

Busy. That one word seems to sum up perfectly the start of 2016 and I don’t just mean for myself. It seems everyone has been exceptionally busy since the Christmas break and just when I, or anyone else for that matter, thought it couldn’t get any busier, then SPATEX happened and… well things did! SPN exhibited at the annual SPATEX show along with well over 100 other companies and it was without doubt the best UK show we have attended. It too was busy – really busy. But not just with visitors, which there were plenty of and who seemed to literally flood into the Coventry venue across the three days, it was busy with great looking and professional stands, which presented a wide range of new and innovative products. The twin seminar programme was busy too. So, yes, busy is indeed the single word that sums up 2016 so far and I promise I’ll not use it again in the rest of my letter! Such a frantic start to the year does of course provide an indicator to the season ahead, so without wishing to tempt fate, it seems like the year is shaping up to be a good one for the industry. Going back to SPATEX, in this issue we review the three-day event. For those that missed it, it really is something that needs to be attended so ensure you make a note in your diary for 2017, as the show

Also in this issue, we report on the winners from this year’s British Pool & Hot Tub Awards held by BISHTA and SPATA. The annual event takes place during SPATEX and puts the spotlight on some of the best swimming pool, hot tub and swim spa projects from across our industry. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the quality and excellence that is present within the UK industry. Energy saving products also play a part in this issue with automatic pool covers and heat pumps both being featured as green and cost saving technologies. We also explore what’s new in the one-piece and fibreglass pools market, a sector that is taking the hassle out of installations for both pool builders and owners alike plus we’ve also a feature on the latest in pool liners and systems too. With the year up and running, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams examines the reasons why people are looking forward to a great 2016 season while RLSS UK’s Alex Blackwell looks at the issues surrounding poorly designed public pools and how greater communication between pool designers, builders and operators is needed to create a safer pool environment. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus information from the STA concerning Biofilms and their impact on Water Plant Management. Finally, we’ve also got our roundup of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad. So with this issue of SPN covered, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy reading the issue.

Start Of Year Seminars Draw The Crowds For Certikin In January, members of the trade were able to get a preview of a number of exciting new products and latest innovations from Certikin International, as the company hosted two seminars ahead of SPATEX and the new season. The well-attended events took place on 12 January at Tortworth Court Hotel, Wotton-Under-Edge in Gloucestershire and 19 January 2016 at Selsdon Park Hotel, Croydon in Surrey. Each followed the same format and provided attendees with a great opportunity to pick up ideas to help drive their businesses forward. Each day included product presentations and a showcase exhibition of new products. In addition to Certikin’s team of technical staff, some of the manufacturers whose products were being discussed were also on hand to give specific advice where required. Managing Director Neil Murray got each of the morning sessions underway with a welcome followed by an appraisal of the current wet leisure market which included, some facts and figures that are released exclusively at the events plus thoughts on the industry and where Certikin sees a number of opportunities. Presentations were then made on a variety of new products including the stunning NIVEKO custom built one-piece pools, the ingenious Walu Deck mobile safety decks and Walu Air inflatable

winter cover and the Certikin commercial products range. Morning sessions were then rounded off with a talk on the CertiChem range along with a highly effective visual demonstration on chemicals. After lunch, discussions moved on to Calorex along with an informative Q&A session held by Graham Kneale, plus more new innovative products were showcased including Millboard Decking products, stainless steel fittings, Coverstar pool covers and Aquacomet pool enclosures to name just a few. Last up was the eagerly awaited launch of OC-1 – Certikin’s ground-breaking new filtration media which is manufactured in the UK and which is unique in its action and performance.

As with previous events, Certikin also held a competition at each event and both days were rounded off with the winning attendees receiving their prizes from Neil Murray.

PWTAG Industry Forum Seeks Members And Technical Input The rationale behind the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) Industry Forum is simple. The Group want to enhance its work through technical input from the pool industry and also to encourage the industry to feel that it has an active role in PWTAG’s work and thus an investment in its outcomes. The PWTAG Industry Forum works by the Group inviting companies in the pool industry who support their standards and guidelines to apply to join the forum. So far PWTAG have signed up 15 members and they include: ATG, Barr & Wray, Dryden Aqua, FT Leisure, Hanovia, Hydrospec, JAK Water, Jetform, Latis Scientific, Lovibond Tintometer, Palintest, Pollet Pool Group, Prominent, Triogen and Ustigate. Membership entitles companies to have a say in formulating and reviewing the publications, technical notes, code of practice etc that

4 April 2016 SPN 4-7_SPN_Apr_16_News_General.indd 4

PWTAG produce. This reflects the value PWTAG puts on the expertise represented by commercial interests. It is a way of ensuring that PWTAG guidelines properly reflect the realities in the pool industry. So far the Forum has dealt with technical notes on UV standards and balance tank design and is currently looking at the updating of PWTAG’s book “Swimming Pool Water: treatment and quality standards for pools and spas’. There is work to be done on reviewing PWTAG’s Code of Practice too. The Forum operates through a dedicated section of the PWTAG website at www.pwtag.org and that’s where technical drafts and consultation documents are placed, for member input. Forum members are listed there and they are encouraged to publicise the fact that they are members. The membership fee is £500 a year.

NEWS HULL’S OLYMPICSIZED POOL PLANS SCRAPPED Proposals that were revealed last year for a 50m swimming pool for an area of disused land in Hull city centre have now been scrapped. Instead, hundreds of thousands of pounds now set to be invested into the city’s existing leisure centres at Beverley Road Baths, in west Hull, and east Hull’s Ennerdale Leisure Centre. Councillor Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for culture and leisure said: “We were looking at a giant swimming pool, but the fact is, instead of a 50m pool, we might as well refurbish the existing ones instead. “It keeps with our procedure of keeping and maintaining services like Beverley Road and Ennerdale Sports Centre. “The changes should be great to encourage to get more people into water sports in the city. We are really excited by them.” The upgrades will include a £250,000 makeover of Beverley Road Baths and a £500,000 upgrade to Ennerdale Leisure Centre

COVENTRY COULD BE IN LINE FOR NEW 50 METRE POOL A deal, which could see a new Olympic-sized swimming pool built in Coventry, has been agreed by local council bosses. Following the transferal of ownership of the Alan Higgs Centre to the Coventry and Warwickshire Award Trust, Council leader Ann Lucas revealed the Council is in talks to build a new 50 metre pool at the site. The news follows months of discussions between the council and various sporting bodies and the proposed Olympic-sized pool with 500 permanent seats could be open to the public as early as 2018. The council closed the city’s Grade II listed sports centre and only 50 metre pool in September 2014, arguing that it could not continue subsidising its running.

PRS And ePIPE Tackle Indoor Pool Leak A leak from an indoor pool at a home in South Kensington, London was creating significant water loss and considerable cost to the customer in water bills as well as heating, maintenance and water treatment chemicals. Pipe Restoration Services (PRS), contractors for Certikin North’s exclusive ePIPE solution were contacted to investigate the extent and location of the leak and offer a solution. Access points to the skimmer line were identified and the route of the pipe work traced under the pool surround using specialised electronic tracing equipment. This allowed the certified ePIPE technician to establish both the position of the pipe and its depth below the surface. This was followed by an extensive internal camera inspection of the pipe and a pressure test to establish the extent of the damage to the pipe, the size of the leak or leaks and the suitability of the proposed ePIPE solution. Following approval of the proposal, PRS was asked to quickly re-establish on site and deliver the ePIPE in-place solution to fix the leak. The process involved operations to dry and clean the pipe work, collecting all cleaning material and dust in specially engineered vacuum equipment, ensuring a dust free and clean environment. The pipe was then coated and leaks sealed from the poolside into the plant room using their engineered ePIPE epoxy lining material and patented process. On completion of the curing process a pressure test was applied to the system

verifying no loss in pressure and proving that all leaks had been sealed. The ePIPE solution not only delivered a significant cost saving over traditional methods such as repair or re-pipe but was also less disruptive. This project was completed in only three days. NEWS PLANS FOR NEW PROJECT LABELLED ‘REVOLUTIONARY’ Multimillion-pound plans for a ‘revolutionary’ Mildenhall complex which would include a new swimming pool and leisure centre have gone out to public consultation. Forest Heath District Council had previously identified the current Mildenhall Academy Sixth Form College site as being the best location for a hub which would bring together a number of public services in one area. Eight sites around the town that could all move onto the one site include two Academy sites, the fire station, swimming pool, council offices, the library, the police station and the Dome Leisure Centre. “That is the vision for the Mildenhall Hub – but it is not just about convenience or saving you time,” said district council leader James Waters. “Many of these buildings will need millions of pounds of investment over the next few years just to keep them going. “By investing in the hub now, we can save on our annual running costs and freeing up eight other sites in and around Mildenhall for other uses.”

COUNCIL ACCUSED OF ‘SPYING’ IN PUBLIC POOLS A council has been accused of secretly fitting underwater ‘spy’ cameras its public swimming pools without informing bathers. North Somerset Council has installed eight cameras in two pools at a total cost of £67,000, but some concerned users have accused officials of fitting them without informing the public first. Defending its decision, a council spokesman said: “The cameras are an additional safety feature to help the lifeguards spot if any swimmers are in danger under the water. “These types of cameras are regularly installed as a standard safety feature in new leisure facilities with a pool and are supported by the Health and Safety Executive.”

Newly Formed Pool Lift Company To Provide Access Solutions Following 15 years as the Managing Director of the Platform Lift Company, Sean O’Sullivan has introduced a sister company. The Pool Lift Company provides dignified and independent access solutions to swimming pools and spas. Sean is passionate about two things in this industry, firstly providing access to what the majority of us take for granted and secondly, delivering outstanding and innovative solutions. The new ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) guidelines, insist that all swimming pools, whether new or existing, are fully accessible for disabled swimmers. Although this applies solely to the US, businesses all over the world have been looking to see how they can improve accessibility. By adding a pool lift, commercial pool operators are increasing their target audience and making a pool

or spa accessible to all. Recently, the facilities team at Wadswick Green Village made contact with The Pool Lift Company. They required a swimming pool hoist product that would fit within their contemporary environment but most of all, wanted to ensure that the product would be fit for purpose in providing access to the less abled in and out of their swimming pool and spa. A site survey was carried out and within five days the

10th Pool Joins Historic Pools Of Britain Historic Pools of Britain, the association launched in September to support the nation’s heritage swimming baths and lidos, recently signed up its 10th member pool. The heritage pools that have joined the campaign so far are: • Bramley Baths, Leeds • Broomhill Pool, Ipswich • Cleveland Pool, Bath • Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire • Jubilee Park, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire • Mounts Baths, Northamptonshire • The Sir Doug Ellis Woodcock Sports Centre, Aston University, Birmingham • Victoria Baths, Manchester • Weston Baths Club, Glasgow • Yearsley Pool, York “These are pools that are at different stages of their journeys to save, restore and operate them,” said Gill Wright who has helped to found Historic Pools of Britain and has led the campaign for Manchester’s water palace, Victoria Baths for the past 20 years. “Each recognise the value of having a national profile and awareness through a sustained and organised campaign, to capitalise on the massive public support for these buildings. Crucially though, it is the support that comes with working together and sharing experiences, that will be the greatest advantage of all.” Historic Pools of Britain is offering a shared voice

New Chesterfield Sports Centre Opens The new Queen's Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield is the latest F T Leisure project to open its doors to the public. The complex includes a 25-metre, 8-lane competition pool, a 16.5 x 7 metre learner pool with moveable floor and children’s fun water features, including water cannons and sprays that are integrated into the stainless steel balustrading. The centre also boasts a café, an activity studio, an 80-station gym and two squash courts. F T Leisure provided the water treatment and filtration systems for the two pools. The filtration systems are traditional medium rate sand filtration combined with chlorine dosing, pH control, filter coagulation and UV sterilisation. In the main pool, F T Leisure installed a motorised wall mounted pool cover system to retain heat as well as designing and installing an integrated hydraulic disabled access system. This will lower and raise bathers in and out of the water safely and discreetly enabling dignified, independent access for any swimmer who finds pool access difficult. F T Leisure has also designed a full

parallel moveable floor system that maximises the functionality of the pool and the range of activities available for all level of bathers. The main contractor for the £11.25m project was Morgan Sindall working with Darnton B3 Architects and the Sheerwater Consultancy. The project was paid for with funds of £6.725m coming from Chesterfield Borough Council, £2.5m from Chesterfield College, £2m from Sport England and £25,000 from Squash England. Aquatics Plays Important Role At New London Trade Event A new trade event, designed to bring together industry leaders, academics, practitioners, policy makers and performance experts focused on getting the nation moving is set to take place 4-5 May at Olympia, London. In particular, one of the feature areas will examine the latest evidence and products supporting aquatic activities. Over 4,000 individuals are expected to attend the free information programme boasting more than 100 speakers. In addition, the exhibition will consist of seven feature areas, two attractions and 150 exhibitors. With inspiring, practical demonstrations, attendees can immerse themselves in the latest products and research. Max Quittenton, Director of Elevate, comments: “The benefits of learning to swim at a young age are well known and swimming remains the country’s number one sport by participation. Encouraging the population to engage with swimming activities is widely regarded as a key component of the nation’s strategy for tackling physical inactivity. To represent the importance of swimming Elevate is placing particular emphasis on the role of aquatics.” One of the key exhibition feature areas will be ‘Active Aquatic’. Over 2.2 million people swam at least once a week between 2013-14, and despite recent challenges, swimming remains the UK’s leading participation sport. Elevate will be presenting the latest in pool and open water swimming equipment, research and performance. Speakers and exhibitors include: Amateur Swimming Association, Zoggs, Speedo, Royal Life Saving Society, SWIMTAG, Swimming Teachers’ Association, Safe Space Lockers, JP Lennard and Aquamat. Martin Symcox, Director of RLSS UK training subsidiary, IQL UK, comments: “We’re proud to be exhibiting at Elevate as we feel that this is the perfect opportunity for those passionate about tackling physical activity to come together and promote change. At RLSS UK we understand the importance of education in promoting water safety and drowning prevention and we are keen to work with organisations, who share similar views on encouraging the benefits of activity in everyday life.” Elevate 01737 855000 www.elevatearena.com

IQL UK Endorses STITCH Accident Benchmarking Tool New figures have been released for accidents in swimming pools as IQL UK, the trading subsidiary of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), puts its weight behind Right Directions’ accident benchmarking platform STITCH. The first annual report for the online tool, developed by the quality and health and safety specialist that delivers Sport England’s Quest quality scheme, ukactive’s Code of Practice and accreditation for the ASA’s Learn to Swim Pathway, found that swimming pools were the second most likely place for an accident to occur, with changing rooms coming in third. The most recent data, released in February shows the top six causes of swimming pool accidents are contact with an object, contact with a wall or the floor, slip, human error, contact with another person and water incidents. Ninety seven per cent of all swimming pool accidents relate to customers and just 2.4% to staff. Only 0.82% of these resulted in hospital treatment. Capturing, collating and aggregating accident and ‘near miss’ data, STITCH provides a live snapshot of KPIs that allow management to monitor accident trends locally and nationally, and club and centre managers to review site trends and avoidable incidents. Endorsing the product, IQL UK’s Director, Martin Symcox said: “With swimming pools and changing rooms high on the list for accident hot spots, we are keen for operators to put their weight behind STITCH and monitor what’s happening on a national level to try and reduce the number of incidents occurring each year.” Most likely to have an accident within the swimming pool area were children aged 8 – 15, however more than 96% of these were considered not preventable. This age group are also the most likely to have an accident within the changing rooms, where just over 5% of incidents (generally within the changing room itself, the toilets or the shower) could have potentially been prevented. Symcox continued: “If we can use STITCH to help operators and centre managers identify accident trends in swimming pools, this will further support our aim of keeping people safe in or around water. STITCH could help to steer operators to improve operational procedures and promote early intervention by lifeguards, all of which would be a very positive outcome indeed.” Right Directions 01582 840098 www.rightdirections.co.uk

Largest Horizontal Fibreglass Filters Achieve NSF 50 Certification Waterco Ltd has achieved another major milestone, with its range of Micron horizontal commercial filters achieving NSF/ANSI Standard 50 certification. They are the largest fibreglass horizontal filters on the market to achieve this certification. “This is an outstanding achievement – for a number of reasons,” said Bryan Goh, Waterco Group Marketing Director. “It demonstrates our commitment to environmental conservation and public health, by reinforcing that these filters meet the requisite criteria to ensure the materials do not contribute harmful contaminants to the water. Not only that, it proves our filters are corrosion resistant, which is another key criterion. They’re manufactured from the highest grade of noncorrosive materials and are designed and built for many years of trouble-free operation.” Clint Holland, Vice President of Waterco USA explained: “This award is testament to the quality and durability of Waterco’s Micron Horizontal filters. These are the largest such filters to be certified to this Standard. The certification means that these very large FRP filters can now be used on high flow waterparks

across the United States.” NSF/ANSI Standard 50 is the American National Standard for swimming pool equipment, spas, hot tubs and other recreational facilities including filters and filter media, pumps, valves, water circulation devices, hose, piping, fittings, pool alarms, pool covers, chemical generation and feeding systems, and advanced water treatment and oxidation technologies, such as ozone and ultraviolet (UV) systems. Most state and local pool codes for commercial, waterparks, splash pads, municipal, hotel, motel, apartment, and condominium require compliance with NSF/ ANSI Standard 50. “NSF certification also provides peace of mind for our commercial customers – builders, specifiers, installers – that our commercial filters comply with the appropriate NSF Standard. This is a pre-requisite for many operators and, indeed, for commercial tenders,” says Goh. “Thus we believe this will help open up the US market for our range of commercial filters, particularly the horizontal models. It’s hugely beneficial in the US, as it means our filters only have to meet one set of requirements

Calorex And Dantherm Announce New Partnership Two of the biggest names in swimming pool ventilation, mobile drying and commercial dehumidification manufacture have joined forces, following their acquisition by new investors. Effective from 20 January 2016, Procuritas Capital Investors V has wholly purchased Calorex Heat Pumps Ltd and the HVAC division of Dantherm A/S. The acquisition of both companies results in a consolidation of two major European brands within these product areas, creating increased business opportunities for both companies, which for many years have worked side by side in a number of European markets. Calorex and Dantherm will continue to operate in the market as two independent brands and the two companies will utilise each other's market and product strengths. It will make it possible to realise synergies, thereby forming the basis for increased growth of both companies. Procuritas is a private equity house with over 30 years of investment experience focusing on mid-sized northern European companies. Bringing together Calorex and Dantherm is fully in line with Procuritas’ strategy to expand within swimming pool ventilation, home ventilation, mobile dehumidifiers, portable air conditioners and commercial dehumidification. Richard Carrington, Managing Director at Calorex said: “We look forward to this exciting development that will provide us with the ability to offer additional value in new areas as well as staying loyal to the core road map that Calorex has always followed.” Ian Furmidge, Managing Director at Dantherm UK comments: “This partnership brings together over 80 years of experience in the swimming pool market and an unrivalled technical expertise of both ventilation and heat pump technology. We look forward to expanding our product portfolio and taking our energy efficiency and funded ESCO solutions to a wider market.”

instead of a wide array of requirements that may vary by locality.” NSF is accredited as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and as a certification organisation by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for numerous product standards. As part of the stringent NSF criteria, filters must meet structural durability requirements that includes design burst pressure testing, hydrostatic pressure testing and assessment of filtration performance. Joint Effort Provides Tiles By The Ton! 164 tons of wall, floor and ceiling tiles that were kindly donated by the nation’s largest tile supplier, Topps Tiles, created a logistical problem recently for an international Charity called Trade-Aid. The charity which is run by Grantham Kesteven Rotary Club and Chaired by founder John Asher, Managing Director of Asher Swimpool Centre Ltd, were transporting the donated products to a project in Africa. The tiles were put into 40ft containers, along with bedding and hospital equipment, however the last 30 tons of tiles were located in a warehouse in Wigan, over 160 miles from the charity’s base in Lincolnshire. When Tony Welsby, Managing Director of Spa Crest Europe Ltd, heard of the logistical challenge faced by the charity, he kindly supplied staff and lifting equipment to help get the tiles to Kenya, where three new hospitals and two schools were being built. Following the intervention, a delighted Trade-Aid sent thanks to Tony and his staff as without their help, delivery of the tiles would not have been possible.

Golden Coast Highlight Advantages Of Custom-fit Control Panels While many things that are bespoke or custom may be viewed as a luxury, when it comes to pool and spa control panels, it makes good economic and practical sense. Golden Coast’s resident technical guru Andy James explains: “With an off-the-shelf product you could be paying for a lot of functions that you will never use, while other features that you would value are missing. However, when you opt for custom-made panels you get exactly what’s needed.” He adds: “Every project is different, so we start every project from scratch to ensure we meet its precise needs. For example, a customer may have existing parts or equipment that we can incorporate into the control panel. “The real beauty of our customised panels is that they can be easily adapted at any time. So if you needed to upgrade your facilities,

there would be no need to start again.” Golden Coast’s bespoke control panel service benefits from an efficient specification process which has been developed to save time and money. This quickly establishes what equipment needs to be controlled, so that a custom-fit solution can be created each and every time. The quality and versatility of the custom panels was best illustrated at SPATEX 2016 where visitors were able to discover how much could be achieved. Golden Coast’s bespoke display featured a two-door, high quality control panel, with connected load, monitoring and display. Fitted with a seven-inch HD touch screen, it offered full function PLC, with a remote IO governing digital, analogue and temperature. With a variable speed drive (VSD) controlled and monitored via the PLC, the system also

included sump pump monitoring, a heat pump start unit and a remote controlled, water feature. Its DMX storage and control featured a full-function, internet-connected DMX glass plate controller. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.gctrade.co.uk

New Filtration System Makes Its Mark We may only be weeks in to 2016 but a revolutionary new filtration system has already made its mark on the UK’s swimming pool industry. Total Pool Filtration teamed up with the Danish company Provital to market their Ceramic Microfiltration (CMF) system in the UK and the pool market was able to get its first glimpse of this pioneering technology at SPATEX in Coventry earlier this year. The successful application of membrane technology to swimming pool water has allowed this exciting new system to gain an advantage over more traditional filtration methods. Sand and glass can typically filter out 5 to 7 micron particles when a flocculant is used. When a flocculant isn’t used, particles as large as 10 microns will pass through. The CMF system can filter down to 3 microns, which is sufficient to remove up to 100% of Cryptosporidium oocysts from the pool water, hence providing exceptional water quality. As well as improved water quality this new system offers many cost savings for potential new pools and existing pools. For potential new builds, installing a CMF system will help save on construction costs as it requires a much smaller plant room. This is a direct result of it

taking up just 30% of the footprint of sand filters and also its need for less headroom, a smaller balance tank and no backwash holding tank. In addition to this, significant savings can also be made on water and energy bills as just 75 litres of water is needed per membrane per backwash. For existing pools the CMF system is an ideal solution for plant rooms that are tight for space and where balance tanks are undersized. It is also straightforward and hassle-free to install and will create minimum disruption to the day-to-day management of the pool. Finally the CMF system is very user friendly. All backwashing is fully automatic and every component of the filtration system can be controlled at the touch of a button on a computer or tablet device. In the unlikely event that any problems occur, engineers can log in remotely to investigate, and in most cases fix the problem, without the need for a call-out. A Revolution In Residential Pool Filters Available from AstralPool UK, the self-cleaning NanoFiber Filter for pools is not a traditional cartridge filter. EVA Optic – Setting The LED Standard For In-pool And Ambient Lighting At SPATEX, Golden Coast showcased the latest lighting developments from LED pioneers EVA Optic. Golden Coast, the exclusive UK distributor for EVA Optic’s complete LED solution, introduced visitors to the Dutch manufacturer’s latest intelligent lighting technology including the EVAline LED Linear Light Aqua HE. The comprehensive product range has been specially designed to perform in aggressive pool environments. As well as coping with moisture and chlorine, it effectively handles high ambient temperatures. Near the roof of a pool facility, heat can be extreme and very damaging to LED technology, so EVA Optic has pioneered a highquality system that prevents any negative impact on lighting units and the efficiency of the LEDs. The system includes ATS (Auto Temperature System) self-regulating heat control – which offers smart protection against overheating and the risk of premature failure. Developed around the exacting demands of athletes, it delivers bathers with powerful, yet pleasant, light. LED is spot lighting which can result in blinding glare. EVAline’s unique microprism cover minimises glare, ensuring a very low glare rate (UGR < 19), with optimal visibility. Where multicoloured (RGBW) lights are specified, pool operators can experience light capacity losses of up to 75%. Addressing this, EVA Optic developed Intelligent Power Control (IPC). This smart system ensures the LEDs operate at full capacity at all times – for optimal lighting. For down-lighting, EVA Optic is the first and only manufacturer to provide a chlorine-resistant coating. The LED line strip lights use anodised aluminium which is highly resistant to an aggressive pool hall environment. Meanwhile, its underwater lights are pressuretested to 16 bar and can cope with water as deep as 25 metres. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.gctrade.co.uk

Calorex Delta Is Top Of The Class Consistent water and air temperatures and reduced noise levels are just some of the benefits that young swimmers at Kingham Hill School in Oxfordshire are enjoying thanks to a brand new Calorex Delta swimming pool environmental control system. The new style Delta 14 was selected as a direct replacement for an old Delta model, which had provided 15 years of trouble-free service at the school. Scott Birnie, Head of Hospitality & Leisure at Kingham Hill School explained: “The 25m, five-lane pool at the school is used by pupils, prep schools and members of the local community during school hours and is also hired out at evenings and weekends for swimming lessons and clubs.

“The previous Delta unit had done a sterling job, but after 15 years of continuous service it had pretty much reached the end of its life and was increasingly needing repairs and maintenance.” Scott turned to Calorex’s long-standing approved service agent Central Heat Pumps, who suggested upgrading the unit to a new Delta 14. These clever machines are designed to control the environment, pool water and air temperature all through one simple PLC controller and with pool water heat recovery as a standard feature throughout the range. With new touch screen technology and a remote internet connection, Calorex’s upgraded Delta range allows the user to control the pool room directly from

a smartphone. All the models in the range now come with a 7” touch screen display providing a more flexible approach to system management. The unit can be controlled and adjusted on site to match fan speeds precisely

to ductwork resistance and automatically vary exhaust speeds to match building load requirements. Calorex Heat Pumps 01621 856611 www.calorex.com

An Award Winning Team

Portrait Pools & Enclosures are one of the country’s top wet leisure experts and regularly turn dreams into realities with sumptuous swimming pool design and construction in both residential and commercial markets. The company recently won an accolade for ‘Residential Indoor Pool of the Year’ with an installation that featured a bespoke 13m x 5m pool constructed in steel reinforced concrete which also included a spa pool and custom built sauna. Heatstar environmental control units are featured on this pool and on more award winning UK pools than any other manufacturer. David Bland of Portrait Pools explained that the client’s brief was for a high spec, bespoke swimming pool and sauna that was visually stunning and had a luxury, high quality finish. The completed design from Portrait created what, in reality, is a luxurious private leisure suite. In addition to being beautifully designed and constructed, award winning pools need to work efficiently and economically on every level. Heatstar was specified by Portrait Pools for the supply and installation of the environmental control system for this prestigious pool. Portrait Pools have been working with Heatstar for 20 years and see the main advantages of Heatstar as the reliability of their units and their energy efficiency. For this installation the environmental control of the pool was entrusted to a Heatstar XF EC 3000 Super Plus unit. Centred upon a high efficiency ‘Cross Flow’ plate air-to-air heat recuperator, the XF EC utilises fresh air introduction to provide natural dehumidification and utilises the recuperator to maximise heat extraction from the expelled room air. By specifying the Super Plus version the Heatstar Phoenix also incorporates an integral air heating coil to provide the main pool air heating plus a pool water heating pack also to provide the main pool water heating. A 6kW heater and Ozone is standard on all models and for those looking for ways to keep fit as well have fun, the Atlantic Pool has all the options. Wellis Launch New Swim Spa Range Hungarian manufacturer Wellis, along with its new UK distributor Superior Spas, used their debut appearances at SPATEX to promote a number of new features on the company’s latest hot tubs plus unveiled the new Wellis swim spa range. The new range, which consists of five models, includes the top of the range Rio Grande, which was on display at the three-day event in Coventry. The new swim spa models are being manufactured at the company’s new factory that opened last year and the range includes Rio Grande, Amazonas, Amazonas Power, Danube and Danube Power models. All of the new swim spas have a 5mm fibreglass reinforced acrylic spa shell and are constructed with a stainless steel frame. They also feature UV-C water sanitisers, exclusive chromotherapy lighting and come with a Thermo cover. A number of other options are also available across the range too. The flagship Rio Grande model has 58 jets and incorporates a separate spa seating area that features seating for three people plus a lounge seat, whilst in the swim side, three River Jets provide a powerful and even flow of water. Both the Amazonas Power and Danube Power models also feature three River jets, which is the main difference between them and the standard models, which are only equipped with one. Over recent years, the European brand has gone from strengthto-strength and the addition of the swim spa range along with the appointment of Superior Spas as the UK distributor is a statement of intent from the manufacturer who are now in a position to produce in excess of 20,000 units per year. Optional upgrades are available and these include: 12 Crystal water fountains, 21 perimeter LED lights, Turbo heated air and 6 x 75mmØ LED under water pool lights. Compared to a traditional swimming pool, the Atlantic gives massive savings as initial outlay costs are considerably less due to less preparation being needed. The self-supporting structure of the Atlantic Pool means it can simply be dropped into place and because all of the mechanical components are mounted inside the cabinet the only thing that needs connecting is a power supply. The Atlantic Pool and all Catalina spas, swim spas and fitness pools are all backed with the unique Catalina ten year warranty plan. Catalina Spas 01980 611555 www.catalinaspas.co.uk

Golden Coast Adds Aqua Broom To Its Cleaning Line-up The latest addition to Golden Coast’s comprehensive line-up of pool and spa cleaners answers the demands of hot tub and above-ground pool owners for an affordable and efficient cleaning solution. Pool Blaster Aqua Broom, which is available exclusively through Golden Coast, offers a cost-effective alternative to labour-intensive pool wands and ineffective garden hoses. Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explained the problem: “For this ever-growing group of owners, a garden hose makes perfect sense, but, as they’ll discover, it’s ineffective, slow and results in lots of cold water being introduced into the small pool or spa. “Inexpensive pool wands are more effective, but they require a lot of effort from pool users. While they’re effective at capturing large debris, they aren’t as effective with sand and algae – so water is never really clean. “Aqua Broom offers an affordably priced, effective alternative – that is more powerful, too – ensuring cleaning is quicker and easier. It operates on just five D-Cell batteries and owners need only to place it in the water and turn it on to begin creating a cleaner and safer environment for their families.” For customers looking for more enhanced results, optional micro-filter bags can be fitted to remove sand, silt and even algae. A Successful Start To 2016 BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes reflects on a successful start to the year, highlights contributions from key individuals and looks at what’s next for European standards

T

hank you to everyone that made the 20th anniversary of SPATEX such a tremendous success. The quality and quantity of the exhibitors and visitors were extremely high (the visitor figures were up by 28% on last year). This increase is accredited to the growing pool and spa trade sector and also from a wider audience that included architects, specifiers, leisure facility managers, holiday park operators and also a good number of non-trade visitors. Congratulations are due to Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Studdy, the SPATEX Directors and the rest of the on site team for the positive response to the show. Congratulations also go to all of the BISHTA and SPATA award recipients at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards held at the industry gala dinner during SPATEX. It was great to see so many people from the industry supporting the event, which included the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards and further information is available starting from page 34. The evening was overseen by Jan Hardy, Rebecca Melhuish and Sallie Golding and my thanks are due to them for such an excellent event. I would also like to thank the sponsors, whose details are found below. While mentioning the Industry Gala Dinner, I would like to highlight the generosity of the pool and spa industry who responded to a plea for financial help to assist Jonah Gillingham with some medical expenses to assist his fight with a disease called aHUS. This is a rare, life-threatening, genetic disease that can damage vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, and brain. In patients with aHUS, blood clots form in small blood vessels throughout the body. Jonah’s condition is treatable with a drug, but his treatment is no longer being funded by Guernsey Health & Social Services.

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 33_SPN_Apr_16_CH.indd 33

Gillingham Pools are long-standing SPATA members, and Jonah is the grandson of the founder, Richard Gillingham while Jonah’s parents Geoff and Sonia Gillingham now run the company. Following the collection Carl Quirk (CCM Pools), Bryan Lennox (Lennox Leisure) and Lloyd Burden (Hydropool UK) generously added £1,000 each to the fund and to date, the money raised has been £4,195. Following the Gala Dinner, Alex Kemsley (Waterstream) has now formally taken on the role of BSPF President and as the current BISHTA Chairman, he already has a good insight into the new role. During the Gala Dinner, Alex thanked Richard Carrington (Calorex Heat Pumps) for his invaluable role as President over the previous 12 months in promoting the BSPF and the wider industry. Richard now becomes the Immediate Past President, Will Dando (Plastica) is Vice President, and Patrick Thorpe is Company Secretary. Their expertise (and that of the other Board members not mentioned above) is greatly valued. Regarding my regular updates on the development of European standards, the latest milestone has been reached, which is the completion of the work on domestic swimming pool filtration, circulation and treatment (as part of the EN 16713 series). These standards are now available to be purchased from BSI and please remember that SPATA members can get a 20% discount if purchasing them through their trade association (as SPATA is a BSI distributor). The next focus of attention for European standards is the mini pool standard (EN 16927) which is being finalised this year by Working Group 3 (of TC 402). Depending on the Final Vote, this document is believed to be getting prepared to be publicly available

at the end of this year (or possibly just into the New Year). That will then leave the work of WG4 who are developing a European standard on Domestic Spas and Hot Tubs. The next meeting of this group is due to be held later this month in Helsinki. The experts are hard at work to ensure these standards are developed to avoid any safety issues. BISHTA continues to chair the meeting to develop these standards. SPATA is also busy lobbying on the next challenges facing the pool industry. The dialogue in Europe is ongoing about an issue involving swimming pool pump efficiencies and at the time of writing this article, there is still no definitive answer as to whether pool pumps will be included in a wider piece of work to save energy with other pumps. This work was originally included as part of ‘Lot 29’ but is now included in ‘Lot 11’. The lobbying continues and the alliance forged with Europump (the European Pump Manufacturers Association) and EUSA to identify suitable ways of increasing efficiencies without severely restricting the options available on the market continues. I wish you all a great year. DIARY DATES 2016

or the third year, the gala awards evening took place at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, alongside SPATEX (celebrating its 20th anniversary), the UK’s leading and largest Wet Leisure and Wellness Exhibition. The gala evening is open to the whole industry, giving visitors and exhibitors to SPATEX the opportunity to extend their stay to enjoy the show and attend the evening. The evening was hosted by Rob Malone, supported by Richard Carrington (BSPF President and SPATA Chairman) and Alex Kemsley (BISHTA Chairman) to present

the awards along with the awards category sponsors. The awards evening began with the re-presentation of the ISPE 2015 awards by the ISPE’s President, John Cheek. A fantastic night started with pre-dinner drinks, with a three-course dinner, with magicians keeping guests entertained between courses, followed by entertainment from variety guest duo, the Harper Brothers. Back by popular demand, the Photo Booth returned to capture candid shots for guests to take away as a memento and the night continued until late with a disco. The SPATA and BISHTA awards provide a

fantastic opportunity for the industry to come together, providing not only a great night, but an opportunity to promote the awards far and wide. In business terms, it’s a chance to network with industry peers, where new contacts and business relationships are begun. Ultimately, the awards are an important platform to showcase the best available hot tubs, spas and swimming pools, raising the profile of the wet leisure industry (as a whole) driving awareness to UK consumers. It’s never been a better time to join BISHTA/SPATA, working together to give our industry a stronger voice! SPN

We set a high standard for our judges from across both the pool and spa industry to score each entry on visual impression and technical merit. This means that an award won at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards is very well deserved” Chris Hayes, Managing Director of both BISHTA and SPATA, said: “We congratulate all the winners of this year’s British Pool & Hot Tub Awards. BISHTA represents 111 specialist hot tub companies and SPATA represents 173 companies. We set a high standard for our judges from across both the pool and spa industry to score each entry on visual impression and technical merit.

This means that the winners at the British Pool & Hot Tub awards deserve their success. Ownership of at least one award stands as a strong endorsement to consumers of the standard of work offered by those companies. Each year, the outstanding quality of submissions creates stiff competition. The high quality of the entries provides a fantastic opportunity for showcasing what our members can do for their customers and reinforces why it is so important to choose a BISHTA or SPATA member to turn a dream into a winning project. The publicity generated from the awards evening helps to promote consumer awareness, to generate demand for products and services to kick start the New Year”. There is the added bonus that BISHTA and SPATA winners are also eligible to be entered into the EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards.” Over the coming pages, we take a look at the Gold winning projects from this year’s Awards plus the other winners from the non installation categories and whether picking up a Gold, Silver or Bronze, SPN would like to congratulate all of the companies, people and projects that were recognised at the 2016 Awards.

STA POOL PLANT – BIOFILMS

Biofilms And Their Impact On Water Plant Management This issue, Robbie Phillips and Richard Lamburn, STA’s Technical Pool Plant Team look at Biofilms – what they are, how they occur and how to prevent and control them

B

iofilms are organic ecosystems that play a very important role in the provision of hygienic conditions for all water-based systems. Simply put, if they are not prevented from infecting these systems they can rapidly develop into high-risk unhygienic colonies, resulting in huge numbers of bacteria growing inside the system. The risk, if left uncontrolled, is the potential to infect exposed bathers in our leisure provisions i.e. swimming pools, spas and interactive play features.

SO WHAT’S NEEDED TO START A BIOFILM? Generally, all you need is a suitable surface submerged in water (or some other aqueous solution) microorganisms and favourable conditions. However, it’s not quite that simple though. Not all biofilms grow at the same rate or even require similar conditions to survive – each type of microbe has its own needs. Still, there are some factors that can affect biofilm attachment and growth regardless of species: • The availability of nutrients in the water sample, body fats, skin particles, phosphates (from pool and spa chemicals) and general organic contamination. • The physical and chemical characteristics of the surface(s) e.g. pipe material, sand grains, balance tank and overflow channel surfaces, filters and stagnant water in these items. • Incorrect pH levels. • Temperature. • The rate of water flow, in the sample i.e. poor hydraulics in the pool, spa etc. • Incorrect levels of disinfectants in the water at any time – chlorine, ozone, bromine, UV etc.

Biofilm formation on dehumidifier fins

• The number of species of organisms in the water. • If the microorganisms can move on their own. • Hidden areas, where often due to lack of maintenance and/or lack of effective cleansing the biofilm establishes. Sand filters are perfect and it is one of the main reasons why they should be inspected and tested regularly. Ultimately, it’s essential to understand that microorganisms don’t necessarily ‘think’ while forming a biofilm; it just happens if the conditions are favourable. If a microbe is pushed by water flow or accidentally bumps into a surface, it may or may not attach the first time or even at all for that matter. It’s unclear what causes a cell to attach to a surface and some researchers say it’s a combination of factors – flows (including shear rates), electrostatic forces, conditioning layers (debris already on the surface) and nutrients available to the microorganism. The establishment of biofilms in the wet leisure sector is relatively easy to identify with a number of indicators and signs of biofilm growth:

Dirty spa balance tank with ideal surfaces for growth

• Combined chlorine odours during water agitation – e.g. swim squad activity. • Cloudy water. • Areas of filter surface inactivity identified as ‘dead spots/areas’ during recommended filter inspection. • Musty smells around the system plant and balance tanks. • Little control and low free chlorine (also disinfectant) levels. • Slimy gel like deposits on surfaces or detection of the same in water samples. The prevention and control of biofilms within the wet leisure sector is essential and should consist of: • Regular inspections of balance tanks, filters, surface draw off components and grids. • Regular maintenance of these areas. • For intensely bathed facilities, e.g. unit spas, interactive play feature systems (with their own dedicated purification systems) consider super chlorination with scrubbing. • Regular chemical and bacterial testing and prescribed interpretations with reactions. • Addressing identified infections by indicator organisms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa for example. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk The cause of Legionella infections is primarily initiated from a biofilm where infective microorganisms are developed in a biofilm then released as a parasite within a host bacterium which in turn is killed only to release the harmful agent.

COMMERCIAL POOLS

Safer Pool Design Managing a poorly-designed commercial pool can be extremely expensive. Alex Blackwell, Head of Vocational Qualifications at the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) calls for greater communication between pool designers, builders and operators to create safer pools

T

here are a number of factors that affect the safe management of commercial swimming pools. For lifeguards in particular, these include lighting, glare, reflection, blind spots, turbulence, depth of the water and the pool’s finishes and colours. Any factors that impact the ability to lifeguard a pool, the lifeguard’s view of swimmers and the pool floor, and the ability of staff to reach a casualty in an emergency have the potential to drive up staffing and lifeguarding costs. In the current economic climate, operators need to be able to run their pools as efficiently and safely as possible. But it is not uncommon for operators to find themselves in the position of having to invest in more lifeguarding staff to manage the challenges caused by the design of the pool, which can be extremely expensive. The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) is passionate about drowning prevention

48 April 2016 SPN 48-49_SPN_Apr_16_Pool_Design.indd 48

and providing a safe swimming environment without driving up costs unnecessarily. With this in mind, we encourage architects to meet with pool operators to discuss the design of a swimming pool with regards to aesthetics as well as running costs. Increased communication between pool designers, builders and operators at the design stage of the project would go a long way to minimising some of the problems listed above, if not eliminating them entirely. A few architects already do this well and as a result are designing and building swimming pools without losing any design creativity. However in our experience, most don’t seem to have a grasp of the day-to-day needs of pool operation resulting in a greater need for lifeguarding staff and therefore greater costs.

THE PROBLEM OF GLARE Glare and reflection are arguably the most common problems experienced by pool

operators. Visibility issues can be caused by light reflecting onto the pool water, either by sun streaming through windows or internal lighting, and can cause significant problems for those lifeguarding a pool. When RLSS UK reviewed the training resources of the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), we found many pools where the design of the pool and visibility directly impacted the number of lifeguards required. In some instances a casualty on the bottom of the pool could not be seen at all when the lifeguard moved two metres along the side of the pool. A video demonstrating this issue is included in our training resources to show the dangers of glare/reflection. For some operators, the problems of glare/reflection are such that an extra one or even two lifeguards are required, which significantly increases operational running costs. The trend for glass facades and floor to

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 21/03/2016 21:27

COMMERCIAL POOLS

Glare and reflection are arguably the most common problems experienced by pool operators and can cause significant problems for those lifeguarding a pool

ceiling glazing shows no sign of abating. Glare and reflection can vary according to the orientation of the building, the time of day and the time of year (eg low sun in winter) and has to be managed. Early dialogue between pool designers, builders and those managing the facility could potentially mitigate some of these issues and reduce operational running costs whilst maintaining safety. In existing facilities, many operators have tried blinds or glare film to help minimise or remove the problem. But if these fail to solve the issue, operators may have to invest in more lifeguarding positions on each shift to ensure the pool is supervised appropriately with good visibility for lifeguards.

OTHER KEY CONSIDERATIONS Artificial lighting within the pool hall and its location may also impact visibility through the water and make the lifeguard’s role more challenging. Underwater lighting undoubtedly creates a pleasant atmosphere but in some cases it can cause dark spots under the water making it more challenging to see areas of the pool floor. Where some pools do not use lifeguards and rely on CCTV to view the swimming pool environment, a member of staff such as a receptionist needs to be able to monitor the cameras on a regular basis. However, staff often have more than one role to perform, and in the case of a receptionist, will not be able to check the cameras when dealing with a customer. Cameras will have the same challenges as lifeguards and the monitor may not be able to show the swimming pool environment clearly and the entire volume of pool water with a clear view of the pool bottom. And this is not even considering the response time to

reach the poolside and effect a rescue or give emergency first aid. The shape and layout of a pool is another factor affecting the safe management of swimming pools. Curved walls, play structures, pillars and stepped access can obstruct the lifeguard’s view of these areas or create complete blind spots meaning the lifeguard simply cannot see what’s happening in this area of the pool at all. The position and numbers of lifeguards should be considered at the design stage and simply moving a pool feature or wall can significantly reduce running costs. Another area that often gets overlooked is access to the pool. This includes village changing facilities that lead directly onto the deep end of the pool – a nightmare for containing excited young children who want to get into the water as quickly as possible. The simple solution here is to ensure access doesn’t lead onto the deep end and to make sure a barrier is in place when the pool is closed to prevent unauthorised access. In addition to the physical structure of the pool, there are a number of other factors that can hinder the role of the lifeguard in safeguarding a swimming pool. Humidity, air temperature, chemicals used to disinfect the pool water and inadequate ventilation can lead to a challenging environment for the pool lifeguard. Consideration of the lifeguard position and environment is crucial. Can a lifeguard be expected to remain alert within these environments? And don’t forget about the colour of the pool. Dark pool tiles, especially when combined with poor lighting, can make it very difficult to see a casualty on the bottom of the pool. White or light coloured

... it is not uncommon for operators to find themselves in the position of having to invest in more lifeguarding staff to manage the challenges caused by the design of the pool, which can be extremely expensive” www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 48-49_SPN_Apr_16_Pool_Design.indd 49

tiles are best.

BE AWARE OF THE DANGERS There are many problems that operators encounter when lifeguarding pools but, as explained, many of these could be solved if those designing and building the facilities engaged with operators in the early stages. This would ensure that swimming pools not only look great, but meet the needs of operators and don’t cost a fortune to manage. In any event, we would recommend that operators conduct a lifeguard zone visibility test (LZVT) when risk assessing any pool to reduce danger by allocating an appropriate number of lifeguards to the pool. SHOW REVIEW

SPATEX 2016 Is Hailed An Industry Triumph

The annual SPATEX exhibition returned to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena at the end of January for a 20th anniversary celebration that promised to feature the best line up to date. We report on the three-day event, which didn’t disappoint By Jon Wadeson

D

uring the setup at this year’s SPATEX, there was a real air of calmness among exhibitors as the stands with the Ricoh Arena’s Jaguar Exhibition Hall gradually took shape without seemingly a hitch or problem in sight. It really was a case of the calm before the storm because I don’t think anybody from the in excess of 120 companies that were exhibiting quite expected what was then to unfold over the following three days. Shows can often get off to a sluggish start, but that wasn’t the case at SPATEX and it

It seemed that from the moment the show opened its doors, there was a constant stream of visitors arriving

seemed that from the moment the show opened its doors, there was a constant stream of visitors arriving at the Coventry based event. For three days the Jaguar Exhibition Hall was a vibrant and often verging on manic networking extravaganza, bursting with great looking stands displaying all the latest wet leisure innovations and products. Every sector of the industry was represented – from saunas, steam rooms, swimming pools to spas and hot tubs and everything else in between. Even on the last day, the Tuesday afternoon, when shows are notorious for going quiet,

visitors were still searching the aisles, looking for the latest gadgets and products for the season ahead. One impressed visitor, Toby Lamper the owner of Affordapool commented: “The first thing I noticed when I arrived was the packed car park, then I came into the hall and the stands were packed too! We’ve been coming to SPATEX four or five years now and 2016 was definitely the best!” That epitomised the views of many with the show being widely acknowledged as the best edition to date.

SPATEX isn’t just an exhibition of products though and the impressive stands were complemented with a comprehensive double seminar programme, which was extremely well attended too. Hosted by a highly knowledgeable team of industry experts, the seminars offered visitors a chance to update their professional skills free of charge and gain valuable CPD points. Ross Alcock of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) who organised the programme of workshops in Arena One said: “Four hundred and fifty delegates attended the seminars which was 6% up on SPATEX

2015. Allen Wilson’s session on Monday ‘Dealing with Pool Problems’ attracted an audience of 54 which is a record, since SPATEX has been in Coventry.” Taking the entire offering into account, the thoughts of Richard Adams MSIPE and Sales Director at New Dawn Pools summed up what many were saying. He said: “Once again the highlight of the swimming pool calendar was SPATEX 2016, the showcase of the swimming pool industry. An array of professional stands and experts within the industry showing off the latest innovations and ideas available to our clients. Well

done to the SPATEX team.” “SPATEX 2016 surpassed all our expectations with a constant flow of high quality visitors throughout the duration of the Show,” said exhibitor Cath Saunders from Certikin International, whose comments are typical of those that have flooded into the SPATEX office since the Show closed. “We were particularly pleased to see a large commercial representation, particularly from the holiday park sector. SPATEX is easily the best way of accessing all that the UK wet leisure industry has to offer.”

Fairlocks Pool Products enjoyed a busy three days and exhibited a wide range of products including new LED lighting and underwater tools

POOL LINERS & SYSTEMS

2016’s Leading Liner Options Liner pools are the most popular type of swimming pool in the UK and as a result, there will always be a demand for the products associated with them. Whether it’s for a new build or a refurbishment, thankfully the days of limited choices are well in the past and an increased offering of high quality and durable options are now available. Whether it’s liners or on site systems, we cover the range of liner pool options on offer this year By Andrea Hartshorne

A

s each year comes around, the sheer range of styles, designs, colours and patterns available for pool liners increases. Long gone are the days of just a handful of options and the choices on offer in 2016 mean more options for new pools and more possibilities for existing pools that may have seen better days. It is, after all, at this time of year when many pool owners may find that what was once their pride and joy is now in need of more than a just little TLC. Of course, there are numerous ways to transform a swimming pool from a tired or even unsightly vision to one that looks as good as new, but one of the cheapest and easiest ways is through the fitting of a new pool liner. Whether it’s a bag liner or an on site solution, renovating a pool with a new liner is sure to get people talking and we look at the options available this season.

SMOOTHLY PROFESSIONAL AQUAFLEX Synonymous with quality pool liners and professional on site lining, Aquaflex are a company worth contacting when building or refurbishing a pool. When it comes to tailor made bag liners Aquaflex use only the very highest quality materials and can manufacture in almost any shape or size. They can even incorporate walk in steps so avoiding the outlay of an acrylic or fibreglass step unit. To top off the liner, Aquaflex have a large range of tile bands that complement the range of available liner colours and provide a professional and attractive finish. For added interest Aquaflex can weld a motif into the liner. There are some that Aquaflex hold in stock or the customer can design their own by providing the artwork for something individual that makes their pool stand out.

Aquaflex’s ‘Touch’ on site lining is 3D embossed and offers three distinctive and natural finishes

When it comes to on site lining, Aquaflex use only the best quality Alkorplan material and have a resident team of installers who work year round updating tired old painted pools with a modern long lasting finish by using the unique and tactile ‘Touch’ material that is 3D embossed and offers three distinctive and natural finishes: Touch Authentic, Relax and Elegance. New pools can be given a finish that is completely out of the ordinary and can even take on the appearance of a lagoon or sandy beach. Strength and beauty are a superlative combination and the 2mm material plus layers of acrylic glaze in a ‘Touch’ pool will withstand many years of the wear and tear that occurs in a well used pool without so much as a wrinkle denting its supreme good looks. Size and shape of the pool hold no barriers for Aquaflex and quirky designs that incorporate obstacles such as stepping stones or central islands are smoothly and expertly covered – as are all Aquaflex pools.

POOL DREAMS COME TRUE WITH DELIFOL’S HELP On-Site Pool Linings deal with the UK distribution and installation of delifol liners, a product which is suitable for both indoor and outdoor pools of any purpose. The linings can be installed into a new pool or used for renovation of an old tired shell and can be installed on top of any existing pool finish with the minimum of preparation. delifol features a tough 1.5mm thick PVC membrane which is reinforced with a strong woven webbing set into the material during manufacture, this gives it the stability to resist stretching under the extreme pressure of water. The chemical formulation, constantly checked and monitored gives it the perfect balance to protect it from damage from sunlight, pool chemicals and the extremes of weather and temperature whilst keeping it supple enough to be laid into the most awkward of shapes. The edges of the material are over-lapped, welded

POOL LINERS & SYSTEMS

Plastica offer a year round on site service meaning the end customer doesn’t have to wait until the spring to have the lining installed

completed in 3 – 4 days and with no drying or curing time to wait, for the pool can be re-filled on completion of the installation. Plastica have been installing the Extreme Pool lining material supplied by Renolit for over 35 years since they introduced the system into the UK. With over 3,000 successful installations completed since then the system has become one of the go to solutions for the pool professional. The material is 1.5mm thick with a reinforced webbing for added strength and is unaffected by frost and ice. It is easy to clean and maintain, with protective lacquers on the surface to help resist the effects of scratching from automatic covers. It also contains algaecides to help prevent bacterial growth. It can be run at higher temperatures than thinner domestic liners making it ideal for schools, hotels, holiday parks, hydrotherapy pools and domestic pools. Plastica have found that although it is more expensive than a standard domestic liner more pool companies are offering the Extreme system to all their customers, not just commercial installations, as the system gives complete piece of mind when completed. With a ten year guarantee but a realistic life expectancy of 15 – 20 years it’s easy to see why the system continues to grow in popularity year on year. A recent addition to the already wide choice of colours and patterns available is their 2mm thick 3D range of patterns which are designed to give a completely different swimming experience and give the effect of swimming in a natural environment.

HUGE VARIETY FROM PARAMOUNT POOLS Paramount Pools provide pool liners and

There are numerous ways to transform a swimming pool from a tired or even unsightly vision to one that looks as good as new, but one of the cheapest and easiest ways is through the fitting of a new pool liner” tile patterns from the well-known Canadian company Kafko, who have been in operation for over 50 years. Their high-quality liners are not only resistant to bleach and UV damage but are also treated to prevent bacteria and algae growth, and as standard come with Ultra-Seam technology which reinforces the seams to make them stronger while making the seam itself virtually invisible. With a wide variety of options for pattern, colour and shade, all Kafko liners can be made to fit a huge variety of styles and custom shapes. The vinyl liners are designed to match with their granite-look steps and spas, and also provide an Over Step system which can be used to create a seamless effect in any pool, whether made from polymer, steel, concrete or fibreglass. Kafko are so assured of the high quality of their products that they offer a 25 year limited warranty on their vinyl liners. These ideas and options are just the tip of the iceberg as to what using a liner can achieve – with some thought and careful planning, a complete overhaul that renews and revolutionises a pool from a scruffy or tired, unusable and unsightly hole in the garden to a beautiful swimming pool to be proud of and show off. Like everything, fashions change and the advantage of liner pools is that they enable the client to update

to the latest colours, styles and shapes for a fraction of the cost. Rather than splashing out on the rather large investment of replacing a pool which has enjoyed many years worth of use and therefore looks a little tired, it can be brought bang up to date with the latest technologies and styles with a new liner.

QUICK AND EFFICIENT LINING OPTIONS FROM CERTIKIN Having a vinyl lining system installed into a pool is without doubt the quickest and most cost efficient means of achieving an attractive, durable and watertight finish. Whether it be a UK factory made bag liner, or an installation by one of their nationwide Infinite on site lining teams, Certikin offers the most comprehensive range of vinyl colour and pattern by sourcing from a selection of accredited suppliers. Manufactured in a purpose-equipped facility at their Northern Division, Certikin’s factory-made bag liners boast both variety and quality. With a colour and pattern range boasting many exclusives and varieties from traditional, well established designs right through to the latest contemporary design, the palette choice is as varied as it has ever been. From the initial stages of CAD conversion of pool dimensions, through automated dispensing and cutting and to high

frequency seam welding on purpose-made machines, the amount of care and attention poured into every liner is obvious. Take, for instance, their ‘smooth seam’ welding technique. By adopting a unique ‘soft bar’ welding process, the seams on their liners soften into one another, creating a flatter, smoother and better looking liner, without compromising the quality. In fact,

Certikin are so confident in the integrity of the liner that they have increased the product guarantee from five years to ten years. Likewise, for their Infinite on site lining installations, they now offer a 15 year as opposed to ten year guarantee on the installation. The popularity of on site lining continues to grow as more and more clients begin to appreciate the wide range of benefits

This 28-year old reinforced concrete pool was crying out for some TLC so Isle of Wight wet leisure specialists, Solent Hot Tubs & Swimming Pools (part of Island Mechanical Services) called on the services of the original builder, pool consultant Roy Eccott who recommended Certikin’s Infinite site liner. Based in Ryde, Westbrook is run by the Christian charity, Urban Saints (formerly known as Crusaders) and provides a safe and fun environment for young people to form lasting relationships, express their faith and have the tools to learn more about it. Westbrook’s tired looking 60ft by 25 ft pool had long since seen better days and Roy and his son-in-law and pool builder, Mike Turner, felt that the quickest and easiest solution was to call in Certikin’s on-site lining team. The installation took some seven days to complete and more than surpassed Roy’s and Mike’s expectations. “We were impressed with the quality and versatility of the Infinite liner and the expertise of the installers,” says Roy. “We have worked with Certikin for many years and the company’s back-up service and attention to detail is unparalleled so we

brought by this process. Once a domain for pure commercial pools where just a plain blue or white was in demand, the advances in printing and colouring technology of the vinyl producers has allowed the development of an increased number of pattern options to flourish so that many of the patterns which were exclusive to thinner vinyl are now available in this heavier duty product. This includes printed anti-slip finishes so all-over patterns can be created even on steps and slopes. The versatility of lining at site means that the scale and complexity of pools is almost no longer a concern, so full scale Olympic pools, right down to smaller domestic pools which may have steps, pits, ledges, awkward angles and myriad of other features can be accommodated within this system.

had no hesitation in my choice. The thing we really like about this method is that if there are any cracks in the pool, the liner expands and then shrinks providing a solid and water-tight layer. This is the first site lining that the company has done on the Isle of Wight and such was its success, we have got another one about to start in Bainbridge.” Island Mechanical Services Ltd 01983 401800 www.islandmechanicalservices.co.uk Certikin North 0113 393 4545 www.certikin.co.uk

ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS

One-Piece Wonders Available in 12m, 10.5m and 9m sizes, the Cube with integrated in pool safety cover from Leisure Pools

With the major benefit of being able to be installed in a matter of days rather than weeks, for many, one-piece pools are the ultimate solution for a hasslefree pool build. But the benefits don’t stop there. Add in improving production techniques combined with quality materials and excellent finishing touches plus impressive warranties and it’s easy to see why the sector is being embraced. he one-piece pool market is one of a number of success stories in the UK and it shows no signs of slowing down in 2016. The popularity of these pools can be largely put down to their quick and straight-forward installation. With everything including the plumbing in place and ready to go, they cause the minimum amount of fuss and installation disruption. Anything that makes life easy is going to be embraced and welcomed. Add to that the engineering strength of the construction and the impressive warranties available, it’s easy to see why the popularity of this type of pool is on the up. In fact, it’s difficult to see any downside to these wonderful forms of construction and even access challenges are rarely an issue thanks to an array of creative delivery methods. Their durability and convenience has, for many, made the decision to buy an easy one and the fact these pools could last up to 50 years is the icing on the cake. Strength, versatility and almost endless options and styles mean that the market for one-piece fibreglass pools continues to grow year on year and the sales show no sign of

slacking. This issue, we take a look at the one-piece wonders that are available.

LEISURE POOLS – FEATURING VINYL ESTER RESIN TECHNOLOGY One of the key improvements that has been introduced to one-piece pools over the last 20 years has been the use of a corrosive resistant vinyl ester layer. Vinyl ester is a high performance resin that provides improved strength properties and inhibits water penetration into the laminate, which is commonly referred to as osmosis, which can cause failures such as blisters, bulging, delamination and yellowing. Available through Easy Pools, each Leisure Pools manufactured composite fibreglass swimming pool benefits from Corrosive Resistant Vinyl Ester Resin for each layer of the pool construction (except the gelcoat colour layer). The layers being: Gelcoat colour layer; Corrosive resistant vinyl ester resin with fibreglass layer; Structural polyester resin with fibreglass layer and a Polyester resin finishing layer. Leisure Pools is the only composite pool manufacturer using patented Composite

Armour™ technology which is a combination of four of the most superior and strongest composite (fibreglass) materials used in one process to create not only one of the best looking pools, but also one of the strongest structures available for swimming pool designs. Standard fibreglass pool manufacturers often only use vinyl ester resin as one layer on the swimming pool as vinyl ester resin is generally double the cost of a polyester resin, which is a cheaper resin used to provide bulk to the swimming pool. Unfortunately, even with this one layer of vinyl ester resin, osmosis has still, on occasion, appeared and swimming pools have sometimes failed using this standard manufacturing method. Testing shows that a Leisure Pools’ Composite Armour™ full vinyl ester resin swimming pool is 111% stronger than a standard fibreglass swimming pool. A swimming pool is something that should last a long time. Customers spend tens of thousands on a pool project and as a result the swimming pool shell must last. Leisure Pools full vinyl ester resin swimming pool is another key step to ensure that this occurs

ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS

Benefitting from Composite Armour™ technology, the Elegance from Leisure Pools

and as a result of using vinyl ester resin for each layer of the pool, Leisure Pools are able to offer both a lifetime structural warranty and lifetime structural osmosis warranty. Leisure Pools do not take any short cuts and have a Patent Pending to be the only company able to offer a composite fibreglass swimming pool with a full vinyl ester resin construction.

NEW MODELS ENHANCE THE SUNDANCE RANGE Sundance Pools has been supplying fibreglass pools to the UK market since 1997. Four years ago they added Ceramic flat bottomed pools to the range which they offer and having been an extremely popular choice for many, have added three new models to the range – Apollo, Kalipso and Pico models. One of Sundance’s larger one-piece pools, the Apollo’s flat bottom is highly practical and saves on heating a deep end! It also features a well designed seating bench that maximises swimming space. The impressive Roman steps of the Kalipso make it a popular choice where a symmetrical look is required as well as providing a good sized family pool. Both the Kalipso and Apollo feature a factory moulded fibreglass shell with a ceramic core for added robustness and insulation. Ideal for small spaces, and for use with a counter-current jet system, the neat Pico offers entrance steps to one side and a seating bench – both allowing maximum swim space. Due to its smaller dimensions the Pico has excellent stiffness properties and therefore does not have a ceramic core as standard but as a special order, the Pico is available with a ceramic specification. All models are supplied with a sand filter and circulation pump, return jets and skimmers, underwater light, pool cleaning equipment with test kit and a thermometer.

Each of the three models come in white as standard, although other colour choices are available, With the new models, Sundance are able to offer a wide range of one-piece pools which includes UK manufactured fibreglass Jetswim exercise pools which were introduced last year. The Jetswim range are available in standard 4 and 5 metre models up to a 9 metre (30 ft) lap pool and are also available as an aboveground pool with the necessary support built in therefore offering a ‘plug and play option’ as an alternative to the traditional swim spa. Sundance’s fibreglass pools have a ten year guarantee and the Ceramic pools have a 20 year guarantee, however in reality, the pools are likely to last 50 years plus, if run properly.

NOTHING TOO MUCH TROUBLE FOR COMPASS POOLS UK

The James family of Brockenhurst in Hampshire are the delighted owners of a black, 11m x 4m Compass Pools XL Trainer, the first one of this model and colour in the UK. It is beautifully complemented by a black granite surround and is the perfect accompaniment to her idyllic thatched cottage in the New Forest. Mrs James hails originally from Australia and has fond memories growing up there and learning to swim in backyard pools. With children of her own now, she felt that she wanted them to have the many benefits of their own pool too and decided that they were at the ideal age to make the investment. She initially made contact with a number of local pool builders, but was unimpressed by their apparent lack of willingness to answer questions and give her the information she sought. She then discovered Compass Pools UK during a Google search. She liked the idea of a composite one-

to locally who own pools reported issues with concrete structures cracking over time, which would not be a problem with a one-piece composite product. She then visited Compass Pools UK’s headquarters near Gatwick Airport, as she felt it was important for her to see the product in the flesh and to test out the counter-current swim-jet which she was considering specifying for her pool at home. Mrs James was very impressed with the quality of the Compass product and loved the finish of the black model she chose, as it’s not offered by other one-piece pool companies. Mrs James was reassured by Compass Pools’ reputation and was also attracted by the product’s incredibly short installation time. piece pool as the ground in her area has a lot of clay and associated ground water issues. ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS NIVEKO are preparing the introduction of a new intelligent ‘nPooL control’ in 2016 which will simplify and facilitate control of the customer’s pool and its associated technology

The NIVEKO range of pools are now available through Certikin International

NIVEKO Pools are always designed according to the customer’s individual requirements, to the required dimensions, shape, colour and equipment. Lights, nozzles and other built-in options are installed and put through pressure tests and depending on the size of the pool, are delivered directly as a single piece direct from NIVEKO production. If the pool size does not enable transport in a single piece, the prearranged pool parts are assembled at the customer’s location within two days. The entire process has the great advantage in no more than two days after the NIVEKO team has left the project site, the pool is completed in a single piece. Then, with all built-in options (lights, nozzles) and circuits having been installed and put through on site pressure tests, the pool is ready to be concreted. As one of its innovations for this year, NIVEKO are preparing the introduction of a new intelligent ‘nPooL control’. Similar to many other modern technologies, it is ready to simplify and facilitate control

of the customer’s pool and its associated technology. From the outset, this elaborate and sophisticated system has been developed in-house by NIVEKO staff. The nPooL control is supported by its own application which will enable remote control via a smartphone or tablet. In addition to providing control to the owner, the system will be fully monitored by the NIVEKO company and the pool supplier, which will provide relief for customers who may be concerned about pool maintenance and will allow them to enjoy trouble-free ownership. More information on the nPooL control will be available soon on the NIVEKO company website. Also new for 2016 is the announcement that Certikin International will be supplying NIVEKO pools. No stranger to the market itself, Certikin has a flourishing One-Piece Pools Division and has over the last couple of decades established a loyal customer base across the UK.

AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS

Automatically And Effectively Sheltered Pools Providing a labour saving and stylish solution with the additional benefits of built in safety, automatic pool covers are increasingly seen as an essential rather than just a luxury for many pool owners. Their use is also an obvious and logical step that helps owners save money and makes pool ownership ‘greener’. With additional innovations in the sector for 2016, there’s now more choice than ever and we take a closer look at what’s on offer By Karen Witney

I

t’s a fact that swimming pools need to be covered when not in use and whilst a bubble cover or a manual option will do the job, they just don’t have the advantages of a fully automatic cover up. Price wise, automatic covers do hit the pocket a fair bit harder but they will see the pool through many years of use, plus many have the edge in the looks department. Safety wise there are automatic covers that are manufactured and installed with it specifically in mind. Other designs can be installed and double as safety covers if certain modifications are carried out in the pool. Believe it or not, there are even covers available that cover the covers themselves through the closed season!

COVREX® – AN AUTOMATIC SOLUTION FROM FAIRLOCKS The ability to cover an outdoor swimming pool safe in the knowledge that the heat will be retained and the pool will remain safe from debris and rain water shouldn’t be a negotiable for a swimming pool owner, it should be fact. Fairlocks Pool Products, the UK supplier of Covrex® automatic swimming pool covers, offer a range of slat colours easily matched to any swimming pool scheme. The covers also boast innovative slat technology including perfectly fitted slats to the swimming pool offering complete coverage and total rigidity from one side of the pool to the other with no end caps to break or leak. At the touch of a button, the pool can be closed up and protected against the elements offering unique thermal insulation. This is no ordinary pool cover; it also offers huge advantages over traditional PVC slatted covers in terms of insulation properties; Covrex® pool cover systems have an average thermal conductivity of λ= 0.12 W/(m*K). The profile structures are made from expanded PVC-foam, coextruded with polyurethane. The exterior is high density PVC,

which gives a perfectly smooth surface to prevent algae formation either above or below the water level and can withstand temperatures from -20°C to +80°C. They provide excellent resistance to weather and UV which makes them suitable for use all year round and come with an amazing standard five year warranty. Covrex® pool covers are the ideal solution for level deck or infinity edge pools since their design allows them to roll out perfectly straight every time, without the need for guides which can easily get jammed in the pit.

MANUFACTURING AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS SINCE 1995 It was over 20 years ago when Ludo Vervoort founded Technics & Applications (T&A) and today, the company is one of the main pool cover manufacturers in Europe. The AquaTop slatted cover is still the company’s main product. This high quality pool cover with slats made from UV stabilised PVC or shock resistant PC has become a key feature for modern, low energy pools. In addition to comfort, aesthetics and insulation, this cover also offers increased safety for adults and children. For those wanting to heat as well as insulate the pool, T&A’s solar slats in PVC or PC are the perfect solution. The AquaTop cover is also user-friendly and easy to install and maintain providing a quick and carefree installation to dealers. T&A also manufactures a fabric automatic safety cover – the AquaGuard. This cover offers absolute safety and closes the pool completely. All the parts are locally manufactured and assembled in their factory in Geel, Belgium. AUTOMATIC POOL COVERS

It’s a fact that swimming pools need to be covered when not in use and whilst a bubble cover or a manual option will do the job, they just don’t have the advantages of a fully automatic cover up” These ‘Alu look’ slats from Technics & Applications cover the pool with the contemporary look of polished aluminium

CERTIKIN’S COVERSTAR UNCOVERS NEW FEATURES FOR 2016 Certikin’s Coverstar is supplied with under coping, flush or top track and can either be pit mounted (with optional pit lids available) or deck mounted. The new Diamond braid rope is a detachable type rope that behaves like a shock absorber. It also resists distortion that is common with auto-cover ropes, making it easier to install and operate with fewer adjustments. It comes with a two year no-break warranty. Coverstar is based on strength and this is echoed in the Eclipse Mechanism which is manufactured with almost all stainless steel components. The sliders are four times as strong as any other slider used in the industry. Furthermore, the pulley diameter is 2” providing five times the load bearing capacity of commonly used pulleys. Coverstar are so confident with their product that they have applied a 20 year limited warranty to the mechanism. The fabric is as important as the mechanism and Coverstar does not disappoint. The fabric that Coverstar uses is not industry standard vinyl, but the Ultraguard III vinyl composite. The high level of UV resistance offered will reduce the level of colour fading. In addition, it offers high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other harsh pool chemicals. The Ultraguard III is available in 11 colours and comes complete with the patented heat sealed webbing which prolongs the life of the cover and ropes. In addition, the webbing is colour matched to the fabric for that aesthetic touch. The cover fabric has its own

warranty, which is seven year pro-rata. Also new for 2016 is a low profile leading edge, which is available in exposed or fabric wrapped options. Ideal for concealing the leading edge when the cover is off the pool, it is made of anodised aluminium and suitable for pools up to 24ft in width (track to track). Assembled and supplied in the UK, a new compact one-piece power pack provides auto bypass valve protection complete with 24V control switch.

HEAT PUMPS

Environmentally Friendly And Efficient Heat Pumps Heat pumps are a firm favourite within the UK industry and are an economical choice to heat the water in pools in an environmentally friendly way. It’s a sector full of choices and keen to offer that little bit more than the competition, manufacturers are constantly improving technologies and releasing increasingly efficient models. Choosing the right one is essential though so this issue, we put heat pumps under the spotlight By Jon Wadeson

P

roducing several times more energy than they consume, heat pumps are an efficient and environmentally friendly option for heating pool water and easily outperform more conventional heating methods. Despite recent reductions in the price of UK energy, the advantages of using a heat pump still remain clear and it’s no real surprise that both the industry and pool owners have been quick to invest in the technology and enjoy the ongoing savings that can be achieved through their use. With an increasing number of brands and models in the market, choosing the right one isn’t always quite so straightforward as you would think but with some careful research and professional advice, the correct solution for any pool setup is out there and this issue we look at the options available for the season ahead.

In addition, extra large twin evaporators provide enhanced heat absorption, while twin 660mm fans maximise airflow and six titanium coiled exchangers provide maximum heat transfer plus protection against corrosion. Each unit is made from heavy duty powder coated sheet metal meaning the Electroheat PRO can easily handle the very worst of the UK’s weather. At the other end of the scale and one of the newer additions to Waterco’s Elecroheat line-up is the Electroheat XL with heat output capacities 12, 15, 19 and 23kW. A compact Electroheat XL is an ideal choice for heating plunge pools, swim spas, spas and swimming pools as a solar replacement/season extender. The Electroheat XL has been designed with ease of use and maintenance firmly in mind. For example, the LED control panel features a continuous digital pool temperature display and incorporates a self diagnosis system. In the event of a problem, the control panel will

display diagnostic error codes. The complete range of Waterco heat pumps is available in the UK through Paramount Pool Products.

CERTIKIN TURNS UP THE HEAT WITH CALOREX With ambient air temperatures becoming more and more erratic, the challenge is to provide a reliable and economic solution to swimming pool heating, whatever the weather, without costing the earth. Calorex and Certikin have come to the rescue with the ProPac heat pump. The ‘green’ range of highly efficient Calorex ProPac heat pumps are designed to heat UK pools to Mediterranean temperatures with minimal impact on the environment. Using state of the art technology, Calorex heat pumps are heating pools for a fraction of the cost of gas, oil and direct electric heaters, but without the carbon footprint.

WATERCO HAS THE SOLUTION FOR A WIDE RANGE OF POOLS Greater interest in environmentally friendly and cost effective pool heating has seen an increase in the use of heat pumps to heat all manner of pools and Waterco’s wide range of Electroheat heat pumps offers solutions that cater for both public and private pool environments. The Hydro-Pro Inverter has three modes, so the user can choose the one that best fits the needs for any situation. The ‘Powerful’ mode is ideal for the beginning of the pool season, with 100% output it increases the temperature of the pool in a very short period of time. In the ‘Smart’ mode, the Hydro-Pro Inverter regulates a constant water temperature with 75-100% output which ensures maximum swimming comfort. With only 50-75% output at its lowest ‘Silent’ setting, the Hydro-Pro Inverter noiselevels now drop to an all time low of just 41dB. This mode is perfect to maintain the pool water temperature. Bosta UK also want to offer a unit of the highest quality by using only quality components such as compressors from reputable brands, Hitachi and Panasonic. Every Hydro-Pro Inverter unit comes with

REGULATING HEAT – THE HEATINVERTER FROM FAIRLOCKS POOL PRODUCTS The team at Fairlocks are the proud suppliers of the ‘Heatinverter’ high efficiency heat pump, offering swimming pool owners a unique system through heat regulation of thermal power flow. Increasing heat pump efficiency by 15-20% compared to traditional conventional technology is a huge saving if you are heating the pool for a large proportion of the year, in order to enjoy the benefits that come with swimming pool ownership. A traditional heat pump either works at maximum capability or is switched off as the compressor’s speed cannot be varied. In order to regulate temperature a thermostat is used to measure the ambient air temperature and switch the compressor on when the water temperature is too far from the required temperature. The Heatinverter uses a rectifier to convert the incoming AC current to DC and then uses pulse-width modulation of the DC current within an inverter (electrical) to produce AC current of a desired frequency. As the speed of a brushless motor is synchronised to the frequency of the AC current it is thus possible for the Heatinverter compressor to be run at different speeds. A microcontroller

then samples the ambient air temperature and adjusts the speed of the compressor appropriately. The effect of eliminating stop-start cycles is to increase efficiency, extend the life of components, and eliminate sharp fluctuations in the load the heat pump places on the power supply. This reduces the demand on the compressor which in turn reduces the running cost and improves efficiency. The ‘Heatinverter’ range from Fairlocks operate down to an ambient air temperature of 0°C, with sizes from 12 - 30kW.

HEATSTAR – ONE OF THE ORIGINAL CREATORS OF HEAT PUMPS FOR POOLS The history of heat pumps in the UK is, in many ways, the history of Heatstar. The heat pump as a heating method for swimming pools was developed by Tony Andrews, the founder of Heatstar and the father of current Heatstar Director Jackie Scott.

During the last 35 years Heatstar have continued to innovate and have pioneered the design and development of a wide range of modern, highly energy efficient pool climate control systems and their ‘Aquarius’ heat pump continues to be a major product in Heatstar’s portfolio. Today’s Heatstar Aquarius heat pump has built on the company’s pedigree and has taken full advantage of all the changes in materials and technology to produce a stateof-the-art heat pump that is the highest quality heat pump on the market. This Aerothermal heat pump utilises ‘direct contact’ technology to transfer heat from the refrigerant directly into the pool water and also incorporates an ultra- quiet ‘low energy’ digital air fan. These ‘top of the range’ Heatstar Aquarius heat pumps maintain their visually unique appearance due to the utilisation of an anodised aluminium frame chassis. Specified and applied for its long term corrosion resistance and physical strength this eye-catching aluminium profile serves instantly to reflect the true quality offered from the Aquarius. Underscoring the quality of this heat pump Heatstar offer a 20 year anti corrosion guarantee on the Aquarius’ heat exchanger and a 20 year guarantee on the anodised aluminium chassis. The Aquarius continues to be manufactured only in the UK and still utilises the finest quality components. Accordingly, Heatstar pride themselves on their outstanding warranties and proven on-site after sales support and assistance using only Heatstar technicians. The Aquarius range now also extends to encompass large capacity models for nonresidential pool applications so for projects

both residential and commercial, where a heat pump solution offering assured long term durability and genuine quality is a priority, the Aquarius stands clear of the rest.

WORLD NEWS

IN BRIEF NEW ZEALAND MOVING TOWARDS MANDATORY POOL INSPECTIONS The New Zealand Parliament recently had the first reading of the Building (Pools) Amendment Bill which will, amongst a number of other changes, bring in mandatory five-yearly inspections for residential swimming pools. However, the lowering the depth at which pools need to be fenced has been backed away from after doubts about the effect on paddling pools plus councils being concerned about potential compliance costs. Another change in the proposed legislation is that spa owners will no longer need to have fencing if a lockable cover is present. Previously, the presence of such a cover meant owners had to apply for fencing exemption, costing NZ$455. Building & Housing Minister Dr Nick Smith said the existing regulations were cumbersome and frustrating and the new bill will be performance-based, providing greater flexibility and will improve compliance. “The new law says you must ensure pools cannot be accessed by a young child. How you do that provides for a greater degree of innovative design. We are confident the bill will result in fewer drownings because the principle problem with the current regime is the lack of compliance,” he said.

CROATIAN MINISTRY RESUMES POOL GRANTS SCHEME The Ministry of Tourism in Croatia will once again give out grants for the construction of swimming pools in tourism projects. The news follows three already successful rounds of the programme. Minister Anton Kliman confirmed that the Ministry will keep supporting the construction of swimming pools because any project that elevates the quality of available accommodation should be supported.

Help Support The Leading Aquatic Educational Conference Exclusive, year long benefits are offered to sponsors of the World Aquatic Health™ Conference (WAHC). Several influential organisations have already signed on to help sponsor growth for the industry, but many opportunities are still available to participate in the 13th annual WAHC. The National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®), host of the WAHC, is looking for sponsorships at all levels for the conference that takes place in Nashville, Tennessee 19 - 21 October. Sponsors allow NSPF to deliver the highest level of scientific and educational information to the aquatic industry. Special benefits are provided to the sponsors for their continuous effort and support of the evergrowing and prestigious conference. The levels of sponsorship deliver different rewards, but every giving organisation will receive one conference registration ($445 value), access to full attendee information pre-conference, company logo on attendee materials and on the WAHC website until 2017, as well as recognition before the keynote addresses.

A diverse group of aquatic experts attend the WAHC, from CEOs, business owners, academia, and pool builders, to service technicians, aquatic managers, EH officials, retailers, and pool operators. The WAHC is filled with professionals who are ready for growth and involvement with other industry leaders and through educational seminars. “Over the years we have seen the importance of the World Aquatic Health Conference grow and grow each time,” stated Mike Fowler, Commercial Marketing Manager of Pentair. “We’re proud of our sponsorship, association with the WAHC, NSPF, and its importance to our industry; especially the commercial aquatics industry. The attendees are top notch, the speakers are first class, and it’s a great way to share knowledge to key individuals in our industry,” concluded Fowler. WAHC +1 719 540 9119 www.thewahc.org

Fluidra Brings Together More Than 400 At Sitges 2016 Fluidra’s most important General Sales Meeting took place between 26 and 30 January in Sitges, Barcelona. More than 400 of the pool multinational’s sales managers and reps from all over the world were given presentations and technical training over the four days. Fluidra’s Marketing Department organised more than 30 workshops on products and cutting-edge techniques designed to make pool maintenance easier and enhance user experience. The event is held every two years with the intention of sharing best practices and acquainting the group’s sales force with the latest trends and solutions for pools. Over the course of the meeting, the attendees were able to try out products at a private fair with 28 stands of both group companies and other suppliers. They also tested their knowledge in the Fluidra Sales Championships, a virtual competition with hundreds of technical and corporate questions. Fluidra operates in 44 countries by way of 150 branches and production centres located in the main markets. Fluidra products are distributed to more than 170 countries due to an extensive sales network.

The group has some 4,000 employees and this corporate event is an example of Fluidra’s good rapport with and commitment to them.

OPINION

Is This Going To Be One Of The Best Seasons Ever For Our Industry? All We Need Is A Little Ray Of Sunshine “All in all, I would say that our industry is in pretty good shape at the moment. In fact, 60% of us are looking forward to a great 2016. What are some of the reasons for that and do you agree?” asks Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams

S

o how do you judge the health of an industry? How do you tell if it’s poised to make the most of the year ahead? An industry show should be a good indicator and this year’s SPATEX was a real success. There were lots of great exhibitors and ‘best ever’ visitor numbers. It was particularly good to see commercial visitors from other leisure and tourism sectors. An industry show should be there to keep members of that industry informed and up-to-speed with innovations, trends and all the latest developments. It should also sell that industry to other areas of the business world and it seems that SPATEX 2016 succeeded in doing that. The Ricoh Arena might be a bit more mainstream and accessible. It might have been the fact that SPATEX marketed the show as ‘The Pool, Spa and Wellness Show’ but, according to many of the people I talked to there, the show drew an unusually high number of visitors from the health and tourism industries.

MAKING FITNESS FUN IS THE SECRET The health sector is a booming part of UK business and it’s good to see our industry is becoming clearly associated with that. Messages that urge people to live a healthier lifestyle and look after their wellbeing fill the media in all of its forms and people are making more and more decisions that are influenced by them. Everyone knows that pools, spas and saunas have benefits for health; they also know that they provide fun and relaxation, and that is a very powerful combination. They are looking for holiday parks and

hotels that have pools, holiday cottages that boast a spa and health clubs that offer a sauna. And they want those same benefits when they are at home. That all makes for a healthy business.

WHEN YOU ARE HEALTHIER, YOU FEEL MORE CONFIDENT How else might you judge the health of an industry? Well, one way would be to ask the people who work in it what they think and how they feel. And the Wet Leisure Survey does just that. The results of the survey are made freely available to everybody at SPATEX and this year they made for some rather positive reading. Sixty per cent of us are expecting to find business conditions ‘Good’ or ‘Very Good’ this coming year. I think that confidence is really important. In the same way that you are more likely to do business with an individual who is confident, an industry that feels it is on the up is more likely to attract attention and make sales. The survey provides some reasons for that positive outlook as well as charting some of the trends and growth areas in our industry.

I think that confidence is really important. In the same way that you are more likely to do business with an individual who is confident, an industry that feels it is on the up is more likely to attract attention and make sales” 88 April 2016 SPN 88_SPN_Apr_16_Opinion.indd 88

I’ve always been a great believer in marketing. It doesn’t matter how great your business is if no one knows about it. If 2016 does turn out to be a bumper year that success is going to be measured in terms of sales and marketing is the first step towards making a sale. According to the survey, more and more wet leisure businesses are turning to social media to connect with their potential customers. As one survey respondent puts it, ‘Social media is widespread and definitely a positive way to get the company out there, but it’s constantly evolving and needs to be managed correctly’. At one end of the spectrum, social media, particularly Facebook, can be a digital form of word-of-mouth. It can keep your customers in touch with what is going on in your business and let them know about new products or new offers. Posting updates and replying to comments is something that anyone can do. At the other end of the scale, Facebook can be used to target advertising specifically at people who live within a certain distance from your showroom and have an interest in swimming, health or even spas. For me, what form of marketing you choose is less important than the fact that we are increasingly recognising its importance and doing something to spread the word about our industry to a wider audience. So I think our future looks bright. All we need now is that little ray of sunshine. So fingers crossed for a good, hot summer. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
