These clever systems help to make the lives of pool and spa owners and operators a lot easier, so there’s plenty to admire about them. Other products, which are normally tucked away from view, are those that deal with the filtration of the water that circulates within pools and spas, and inside we’ve a feature which explores some of the latest models and innovations which offer improvements in performance.

SAFETY COVE RS

After what has definitely been another 12 months of ups and downs, we’ve finally made it to December and that means our last issue of the year. Thinking back to January, I remember there was actually a healthy amount of enthusiasm around and the thought that a new year would bring new opportunities. However, as it panned out, and without wishing to sound too much like the Christmas Grinch, the usual suspects of weather, economy, inflation, etc all cast a shadow (or should that be cloud) over 2024. That’s not to say this year has been bad for all – from speaking with a number of companies, it’s clearly wasn’t – but it was certainly a challenging year again for some, both here in the UK and for others located further afield too.

I say that, as having returned recently from the Piscine Global exhibition held in the French city of Lyon, other markets have also found the going tough in 2024, however the mood was optimistic for a bounce back next year, especially if decent spring weather arrives. At the show, a number of new innovations and products were launched, some of which are included inside, but many more will be featured in our next issue and announced at the SPATEX trade show in February.

The French show was also the setting for the EUSA Awards 2024 and I’m pleased to say congratulations go to two British companies who picked up Awards. You can see exactly who won what towards the back of this issue. Also, inside you’ll find our annual look at dosing pumps and control systems, automated products which quietly go about their business playing their own, crucial part in delivering

Moving away from plant rooms and looking at the more glamorous and definitely warmer end of the product spectrum, in this seasonal issue we highlight some soothing sauna and steam products, wellness items which are perfect for relaxation of the mind, body and soul, especially during these colder winter months. We’ve some great value for money entry-level swim spa options too, products that are still proving to be popular with many families around the country. Safety covers also go under the spotlight as we take a closer look at a range of options which are marketed on the strength of reducing accidents through denying direct access to any pool or spa.

As if that wasn’t enough, we have a piece on a Water Babies’ pool that proudly utilises Waterco equipment, plus our regular Opinion piece takes a different format this issue as we highlight some of the statistics and thoughts published in Leisure DB’s ‘The State of the UK Swimming Industry Report 2024’ – it’s a document that many should read over the Christmas break. There’s also a piece from the STA’s Zoe Cooper as she looks at the subject of unconventional pools and talks to the owners of ‘Swim In A Tin’ – a swim school based in Leamington Spa.

As always, there’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield.

So with everything covered, that’s this issue and year complete – I hope there’s something of interest for all of our readers.

Have a great festive break – we really have all earned it this year! See you all in 2025!

Friends Of Jubilee Pool Breathe The Difference

Jubilee Pool in Bristol, a local art deco landmark, opened in 1937 and is now Bristol’s first communityrun swimming pool and gym. However, the pool hall environment was suboptimal due to an undersized air handling unit (AHU) – this meant that swimmers were experiencing an unpleasant atmosphere and the fabric of this historic building was deteriorating too.

At the site survey, a team from Recotherm recognised that the specifics of this site required a bespoke unit in order to create the desired atmosphere. In addition, the unit would need to be delivered as flat pack elements due to vehicle size restrictions outside the building.

The Recotherm team tailored an Artis 350 unit to deliver the short and long term requirements that Jubilee Pool required. They were also able to deliver the unit in flat packed elements with their in-house specialists building the unit on site.

The moment the new Artis 350 unit was switched on, the project funders, Friends of Jubilee Pool, could immediately breathe the difference.

Martin Cosnett, Operations Director at Hockley Mechanical & Electrical Services Ltd, who carried out the installation of the ductwork and heating system for the new AHU stated: “It was a shame to see such a beautiful historic building suffer from the damage caused by the lack of proper ventilation and heating. The new Recotherm unit was perfect for the job. It will make for a much more comfortable environment for swimmers and

staff and prevent further damage to the building while reducing the carbon footprint due to being much more economical to run.”

A BIRTHDAY BONANZA FOR BRAMLEY BATHS

Bramley Baths marked its 120th birthday with a feast of community-led celebrations.

Local dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of Leeds gathered just as their counterparts had done for the opening on 17 October 1904. This historic moment was followed with an Edwardian themed circus that encapsulated Bramley Baths’ fun spirit – fire eaters, suffragettes and a strong man were all part of a colourful line up of entertainment.

David Wilford, Chief Executive Officer at Bramley Baths said: “We are delighted to have celebrated this special anniversary with our local community and the people of Leeds. We are very proud of everything the Baths have achieved in its 120-year history and I’d like to thank all the staff and volunteers for their hard work, the board of trustees, and the press for supporting this significant milestone. It is a fitting platform from which to launch our exciting community share offer, to make the Baths not only community led but part community owned, as we head into the next chapter in the Baths’ story.”

REFURBISHED CHORLEY POOL OFFICIALLY OPENS

The Mayor of Chorley officially opened Brinscall Swimming Pool in late October following a recent £600,000 investment, then set off on a sponsored swim where he swam half a mile in aid of his chosen charities.

The significant investment to the over 100-year-old facility included repairs to the pool structure and an upgrade of the poolside facilities and changing areas all in keeping with the historic features of the site. The entrance and reception areas have also benefitted from a facelift and new LED lighting and Air Handling Units have been installed.

Aqua Technics Pools UK Appoint Giles Leisure

Kent-based Aqua Technics Pools UK are excited to announce the appointment of Giles Leisure of Lewes in East Sussex as their latest authorised installer dealer. For the company, headed by husband and wife team of Alex and Tracey Howell and celebrating their 35th year of serving the wet leisure needs of south coast clientele, the move is a welcome return to pastures old.

Alex explained: “So why did we choose Aqua Technics? Simple really – we’d sold several back in the day, when a well-known big box manufacturer/ distributor briefly imported them. At the time it was the only one-piece pool with shallow and deep ends, and of fantastic quality. Fast forward 20 years and now it’s part of the XL Pools stable. Dealing with them is a no-brainer, as they’re like-minded, ethical, professional, and, most importantly, friendly. Let’s get back to dealing with people and not catalogue numbers.”

Dorian Davies, Aqua Technics’ Dealer Network Manager, said of the latest recruits to the Aqua Technics Pools UK family: “We are extremely chuffed to have the team from Giles Leisure on board as the authorised Aqua Technics dealer for their area. I’ve known Alex and Tracey for… ahem… a number of years now – more than any of us will own up to! I have no doubt whatsoever that they will be superb, successful ambassadors for the brand, and are already working on a number of really good quality enquiries.”

In fact, Giles Leisure’s first Aqua Technics pool sale was for a Caesar model to replace an ageing kidney shaped pool which was beyond economic

repair at a home overlooking the sea at Eastbourne. The project has some interesting challenges to overcome, and will be the subject of a later feature, documented photographically at every stage. With some territories available, applications from ambitious prospective dealers across the UK and ROI are welcomed.

IN BRIEF

GREENWICH POOL SET TO RECEIVE FACELIFT

An ageing pool in the Royal Borough of Greenwich in London is set to receive a major facelift after the local Council agreed to spend over £380,000 on the facility to prevent its closure.

The authority has given the green light to plans to spend grant funding on replacing gas boilers that have been at Thamesmere Leisure Centre in Thamesmead for over 20 years.

Operated by Greenwich Leisure Ltd, the pool will receive a new combined heat and power system alongside a replacement boiler system.

The investment comes from a Sport England grant as part of the body’s swimming pool support fund.

CONSTRUCTION WORK UNDERWAY ON EAST LONDON FACILITY

Redbridge Council and their contractor Jerram Falkus, are on site constructing an exciting new building which will extend both Wanstead High School and Wanstead Leisure Centre in East London.

As part of the council’s wider plan for regeneration and growth to the area, the £16m construction will span over three blocks, with a 4,200 square metre building housing educational facilities whilst the existing leisure centre building will be extended to accommodate a new state-ofthe-art 25 metre swimming pool, dance studios, a new reception area and accessible changing rooms.

Kam Rai, Leader of Redbridge Council, said: “Few local authorities are currently investing in leisure facilities, building swimming pools, and creating new classrooms for pupils. We are therefore very proud to be able to provide this vital infrastructure to local people in our borough.”

Work is due to be completed in winter 2025.

NIVEKO And HTP Deliver The Perfect Pool For TV Presenter Ben Fogle

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Middle England, this beautifully designed pool project delivers a seamless blend of luxury and nature within the private garden of TV presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle. This collaboration between NIVEKO and the HTP Group has culminated in a custom-built pool that not only met Ben’s vision of harmony with nature, but also integrated eco-friendly technology for a sustainable swim.

Ben, with his love of the outdoors, envisioned a pool that would not merely be an addition to his home, but an extension of the natural environment.

A pool that looked like “it was meant to be” within his home’s beautiful gardens.

After being recommended to Lewis Salvidge and the expert team at HTP Group, Ben embarked on a design journey that resulted in a pool project crafted with precision and a strong respect for nature. The result was an 11 x 4 x 1.5 metre NIVEKO Skimmer Invisible pool in an elegant Stone Grey finish that fits seamlessly within his garden, as though it has always belonged there.

From initial design discussions to final touches, the NIVEKO pool was customised to Ben’s lifestyle. With a busy schedule that often takes him overseas, Ben cherishes moments of peace in his garden oasis, finding respite through morning swims surrounded by the tranquil surroundings.

The pool’s eco-friendly features include full insulation and a solar slatted cover to harness

the sun’s rays to warm the water naturally. An additional air-source heat pump further supports sustainability, providing a reliable and green heating solution that aligns perfectly with Ben’s commitment to nature conservation.

With the expertise of NIVEKO and HTP Group, the pool has become a sanctuary for Ben and his family – an embodiment of both luxury and environmental consciousness, making this wilderness-inspired swimming pool the ultimate personal retreat.

Construction Gets Underway For £9.5m Leisure Centre

A highly-anticipated £9.5m project to modernise Lichfield’s leisure centre provision has begun in Stychbrook Park in Staffordshire, with complete construction partner Stepnell appointed to undertake the design and build by Lichfield District Council.

Procured through the Procure Partnerships Framework, the work will deliver a brand-new centre in a bid to support the diverse health and wellbeing needs of Lichfield’s residents. This includes a 25 metre, six-lane pool alongside various other sports and recreation facilities.

Set to complete in late 2025, the new centre will replace the ageing Friary Grange Leisure Centre and will offer provisions to cater for all abilities.

Adrian Barnes, Regional Director at Stepnell said: “Following an in-depth procurement process, our appointment to Stychbrook Park is an exciting

opportunity to collaborate with Lichfield District Council and add to the growing expertise within the leisure sector.

“As with all our projects, our teams are committed to delivering a strong level of collaboration and communication with the local community and will actively seek engagement throughout the build process to ensure the end result is something the whole community can be proud of.”

As is standard practice for its range of projects within both the private and public sector, the Stepnell team will work closely with the local supply chain, utilising the expertise of the local area.

Alongside Stepnell, the project team also includes architecture firm Box Architects, civil and structural engineers Adept, and building services design, BWB Consulting.

Heatstar And Cresta Leisure Team Up For Popular Waterpark Project

Brean Splash Waterpark is a family-owned facility in Somerset comprising an indoor complex that opened in 2011 and an outdoor splash pool.

Inside is a 25m, 6-lane swimming pool along with a splash zone which is made up of a small pool and fun slides. Both pools were installed by Dorset-based Cresta Leisure who have worked closely with the waterpark over the years, and who were recently tasked with replacing the outdated and inefficient dehumidification systems. With a 30-year working relationship with Heatstar behind them, the centre could be confident that both companies would find the right solution.

The units chosen to handle the environmental control requirements on the indoor complex were three Heatstar XF EC 12000 Super+ units. These highefficiency heat recovery ventilation systems utilise fresh air introduction to provide natural dehumidification and utilise a ‘cross-flow’ recuperator to maximise heat extraction from the expelled pool room air.

Celebrations

Herald Reopening Of Hailsham Swimming Pool

Freedom Leisure, the not-for-profit leisure trust that manages Hailsham Leisure Centre on behalf of Wealden District Council, hosted a lively and well-attended Open Day recently to celebrate the reopening of its newly refurbished swimming pool. The event marked the culmination of a major renovation project, which has revitalised the muchloved community space.

As is often the case, the main issue faced was how to fit these large units into the footprint of the existing plant room and for that, Heatstar’s sales and design team had to create a special XF EC 12000 unit dedicated to the indoor splash pool. It was modified to accommodate a fresh air duct on the side which required an internal redesign to move some of the larger components around. In a first for Heatstar, it was also manufactured as both a ‘split’ unit, allowing manoeuvrability through the difficult to access site, and in a horizontal configuration, to obtain the required fresh

air spigot size.

Cresta Managing Director

Simon Bareham said:

“Careful planning and a clear understanding of what was required from all those involved ensured that the units were delivered, positioned and installed in a tight window and ensured that the Park was up and running quickly with little disruption to their operations.

“The client is delighted with the smoothness of the installation, experiencing an improved environment and reduced running costs. A great result for Heatstar, Cresta and Brean Holiday Park.”

Local residents and families gathered to take part in the festivities, which included tours of the newly renovated pool area, swimming lesson tasters, and a range of fun, family-friendly activities. The highlight of the day came when the pool was officially reopened by Hailsham Town Mayor, Paul Holbrook and Councillor Jessika Hulbert, who cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Councillor Jessika Hulbert, Wealden District Council’s Chair said: “After months of dedicated work and improvements, it is exciting to be able to welcome everyone back to enjoy a refreshed swimming experience. Wealden District Council is committed to continue investing in the districts three leisure centres – Crowborough, Hailsham and Uckfield – to make them more accessible, inclusive and energy efficient. Swimming is a vital skill that enhances physical fitness, improves cardiovascular health and provides a full-body workout.  It also promotes mental well-being and reduces stress.”

The swimming pool will continue to serve as an important community asset for the people of Hailsham and surrounding areas, offering a space for health, fitness and social interaction. With the official reopening now complete, Hailsham Leisure Centre is welcoming swimmers of all abilities back to the water, confident that the updated facilities will provide a high-quality experience for years to come.

Council Unveils Design For New Surrey Facility

Following engagement and feedback from local residents, businesses and community groups, the design of a new leisure centre for Cranleigh in Surrey is ready.

The state-of-the-art, ultra-low energy use leisure centre will offer a range of modern and sustainable facilities to enjoy for residents of Cranleigh and the surrounding villages, including a 25m six-lane swimming pool, a teaching pool with moving floor, dedicated spectator seating, plus numerous other sports and leisure facilities. The budget for the new centre is £31.1m and was approved by Waverley Borough Councillors last year.

The centre will be built to Passivhaus certification, offering a 60-70% reduction in carbon emissions and a corresponding decrease in energy demands. This will make a significant contribution to Waverley

Borough Council’s commitment to become a carbon neutral council by 2030.

Paul Reed, Director at GT3 Architects, said: “As part of the design process we have looked, in detail, at the strong local vernacular and rural character of the local conservation area to ensure the design can respond to the local village. The final design provides a contemporary response to pitched roof context and prevalence of local brickwork. We have created welcoming and bright indoor spaces for a great variety of activities, and room to socialise, play and relax.

“Designing and building to achieve the Passivhaus standards is very challenging, particularly for a leisure centre. The new highly sustainable leisure centre will be something for the community to be extremely proud of for many years to come.”

Improve Efficiency With Lutz’s Battery Driven Chemical Drum Pumps For Carboy Transfer

Within the wet leisure sector, traditionally, manually operated hand transfer pumps have been employed for transferring sodium hypochlorite or acids from carboys to day tanks, a process which takes time and can also be tiring. But Lutz have launched a solution to make this task significantly easier.

With the elimination of cables, Lutz’s new battery operated chemical transfer pumps are ergonomically designed, lightweight and portable, plus with flow rates from 20l/min (B1) to 65l/min (B2), they offer a much quicker transfer option.

Even more impressive is that the B2, with a 24V battery, can transfer 2,400L on a single charge using replaceable, highperformance Li-Ion technology.

For maximum flexibility, pump tubes are available in PP, PVDF or 316SS in 500mm, 700 and 1,000mm lengths to cater for differing container types.

The drive unit uses a new BLDC motor with a high level of efficiency of up to 70%, provides both high battery and service life, low weight, low noise ≤ 70 dBA and are infinitely varied. What’s more, the drive unit is easily and safely detached from the pump tube with a quick action coupling.

The Future Of Easy Pool Water Care Is Here

King Technology, makers of FROG® products, have announced FROG Pool Solutions – the first and only line of dry, concentrated specialty chemicals to treat common pool water problems.

Pool owners simply drop a prefilled pod into the skimmer basket to solve pool water care issues and enjoy sparklingly brilliant water for 90 days.

FROG Pool Solutions include a line of four different products:

• FROG Algae Gone™ treats and cures algae outbreaks

• FROG 90-day Algae Barrier™ prevents green, yellow and black algae for 90 days. Plus, it comes with a 90-Day Algae Protection Guarantee

• FROG 90-Day GoodBye Phos™ reduces and removes phosphates – the food for algae and improves filter efficiency for 90 days

• FROG 90-Day GoodBye Cloudy™ polishes pool water, and creates crystal clear, brilliant, sparkling water for 90 days.

Alex Granlund, Product Marketing Manager for King Technology said: “The vast majority of pool chemicals are sold in bottles of liquid. They leak, causing retailers to put up signs in their store that say, ‘Not responsible for leakage’. The caps crack, the bottles are misshapen, and consumers often need several bottles for one treatment, so retailers have to carry a lot of heavy boxes of bottles that are over 80% water.

“Then, pool owners have to figure out the confusing small print dosage instructions, measure and dump in liquid that spills, splashes and often stains; and they have to do this weekly!” FROG Pool Solutions change all that. Individual pods are prefilled with a dry, concentrated formula, so there’s never leakage. And consumers buy one pouch that’s three times lighter than a bottle of a liquid pool chemical.

One pod in the skimmer dispenses within 24 hours, and that’s it.

Latham Launches AI-Powered Measuring Technology For Vinyl Pool Liners

Imagine never having to A-B a pool for a new liner or safety cover ever again. Latham Group, Inc. the largest designer, manufacturer, and marketer of in-ground residential swimming pools in North America, Australia and New Zealand, have announced the deployment of a firmware update to Measure by Latham Pools. Already proven effective for capturing safety cover measurements, this game-changing technology is now available for measuring vinyl pool liners with optimal accuracy and efficiency.

Reusable Swim Nappy Brand Saves Leisure Pool Operators Money With

Leak-proof Solutions

Splash About which designs and develops some of the most advanced swimwear for babies and young children is the only brand to win three gold awards at the prestigious 2025 Mother & Baby parenting awards.

Splash About’s flagship range of reusable Happy Nappy swim nappies scooped gold for Best Swimming Product, while its sustainable Happy Nappy DUO was awarded gold for Best Ecofriendly Product.

best protection on the market against faecal leaks.

Over 200,000 UK babies swim each week in a Happy Nappy product and wearing a Happy Nappy product is considered best practice by British Standards (BSi) guidelines for baby swimming.

Measure by Latham Pools is the first tool of its kind aimed at modernising and simplifying the pool liner and cover measurement process. Powered by AI, the system employs an HD camera and LiDAR laser technology to capture images and measurements based on points plotted by the technician. Advanced backend algorithms allow a single technician to measure an entire pool perimeter, along with any unique features, and provide precise specifications for swimming pool covers – and now vinyl liners – in less than 30 minutes.

“This tool not only streamlines the measuring process but also significantly shortens overall lead times,” noted Scott Rajeski, President and CEO of Latham Pools. “In fact, turnaround times using Measure are up to 3x faster

The Measure by Latham Pool system is supplied in a protective case with carrying bag and comes complete with the following components:

• M1 scanner

• Transit extendable tripod

• 64GB iPad Air® with protective case

• AR Tag/Stick assembly

• 65W 20000mAh battery and charging cables.

The proprietary, patent-pending technology can be used to measure pools of any shape and almost any size quickly and accurately. The intuitive interface is easy to navigate, and the scanner is protected by a waterproofed, heavy-duty aluminum housing, allowing it to be used in all outside conditions.

“UK swim schools insist that babies and young children under three years wear a reusable Happy Nappy product, because it’s a simple and effective means to preventing faecal leaks and ensuring that pool water is as clean as it can be for all swimmers,” commented Splash About’s Joint Managing Director Samantha Williams.

Globally leisure operators are realising the benefits of this practice; a faecal accident equates to unnecessary lost revenue with a pool closed for draining, cleaning, then reheating. Splash About’s Happy Nappy products have been at the forefront of leakprevention for over 20 years; with a unique ergonomic shape, flexible but fitted gusset and specialist fabric ribbing at the waist and legs, these swim nappy products offer the

New Pump Options Available Exclusively Through Ocea UK

Ocea UK’s already solid team of Pool Pumps now has two new players ready to take the market by storm in 2025. The role of a pump has never been so integral in keeping the pool running efficiently and it is important to choose the right pump as it is a long-term investment.

The new InverSmart is a low cost option that runs on Inverter technology with a variable speed of 30-100%, clear display with live power consumption, one click backwash and offers precise control with four timers for daily operation. At 36 decibels it is both quiet and energy efficient.

Then there’s the InverMaster, a sleek, contemporary and game changing option. Ocea advise that as this is the quietest pump available on the market, producing only 30 dBA @ 1m, it creates an exceptionally quiet pool circulation environment. The InverMaster features a proprietary, patented water-cooling system that utilises pool water to cool the motor, eliminating the need for intrusive fans and significantly reducing operating noise. The Inverter ‘brain’ not only monitors the change of

pipeline pressure, but also sends commands to the pump driver for automatic adjustment of flow rate and running capacity. Pool owners can save up to £2,000 a year on energy costs when installing InverMaster vs a single speed pump (based on a four-season pool running on average 16 hours a day, 365 days a year, electric @21p an hour).

Exclusively available through Ocea UK and with stock available, members of the trade can visit the company’s new Oxfordshire showroom and see the range running on their working pools, with members of the Ocea UK team on hand and more than happy to demonstrate and educate any visitors at their own pace.

Experience The Ultimate Seamless Pool Finish

Pool fittings play a vital role in ensuring that a swimming pool functions seamlessly. Traditionally these fittings have been white in colour which does not always complement the overall design of the pool, particularly when it has been finished with a liner. However, with Certikin’s new range of innovative patterned fittings, both pool installers and owners can now get the perfect match.

Specifically tested and developed for swimming pool conditions, and launched to the trade at February’s SPATEX exhibition, the new ingenious range of fittings are available to visually complement three of the best-selling pool liner patterns – Riverstone, Blue Marble and Sublime. With each pattern, the full range of fittings is available including inlets, main drain and light fascia – ensuring the ultimate seamless pool finish for a liner pool project!

In addition to these three clever aesthetic options, new mid blue and dark blue fittings have also been carefully selected to blend in with a variety of existing pool liners including Persia Blue, Blue Marble, Mosaic and Gemstone Light Blue.

BIO-UV Group Awarded CSR Commitment-ISO

26000 Label And Is Proud To Earn Its First Star

BIO-UV Group, a company that has been designing water treatment and disinfection systems for over 35 years, has officially received the Commitment CSR label according to the ISO 26000 standard. This label acknowledges the company’s strong commitments and sustainable development initiatives in corporate social responsibility. In its first evaluation, BIO-UV Group received one star for its level of maturity in ‘Progression’, which it aims to further develop over the next three years.

A benchmark ESG label, aligned with the international standard, the ISO 26000 distinction demonstrates a company’s commitment to a genuine approach that respects all of its stakeholders (employees, customers, suppliers, business partners, etc.) in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

Last September, the French Certification Association (AFNOR) carried out a thorough audit of BIO-UV Group’s ESG practices. During the audit, the company showcased the actions it had already implemented in recent years, as well as its objectives for advancement over the next three years. The areas addressed by this commitment include governance, implementation of the ESG strategy, human resources, working conditions, sustainable production and consumption, as well as local communities’ engagement.

Following this initial audit, to be re-evaluated in 36 months, BIOUV Group was awarded the Commitment CSR-ISO 26000 label, with a ‘progressing’ grade, underlining the efforts already made and its future commitments. “BIO-UV Group has a very high level of commitment and strong management leadership. Vision, raison d’être, ESG strategy and roadmap have been defined. There is good momentum for deployment of the ESG approach, and many actions are underway,” emphasised the AFNOR evaluation report.

The company has already taken several steps in sustainable development. These include installing solar panels to produce and use green energy, setting up vehicle recharging stations, introducing a sustainable mobility allowance, and recently installing black bee hives at the Lunel site.

Fluidra Investment Strengthens Its Commitment To Sustainability And Energy Efficiency

Fluidra has announced a new strategic investment in Ecotropy, a French company specialising in the creation of digital twins (virtual models of a physical object) for energy efficiency management in pools and aquatic environments.

The collaboration between Fluidra and Ecotropy was made through Fluidra Ventures, Fluidra’s recently launched investment fund, with a capital of €20m, designed to invest in pioneering startups in the pool and wellness sector.

Following its success in France, Fluidra is confident that through this collaboration, these benefits can be extended to more aquatic facilities around the world.

“This alliance reaffirms our commitment to innovation and sustainability, allowing customers to enjoy world-class facilities while optimising resource use, reducing operational costs and minimising environmental impact. Through this partnership, we continue to lead the sector by adopting advanced technologies that not only benefit our customers but also promote a more responsible use of natural resources,” said David Tapias, Innovation Director at Fluidra.

Focusing On The Highs From 2024

Looking back on the last year, there have been some real highs to celebrate in our industry, so please read on for more details!

A great example is partnerships and joint working initiatives. In the UK, many supportive organisations align with our industry. Notably, ISPE continues its excellent work on workforce qualifications, and the recent ISPE seminar near Newbury saw strong representation from SPATA member companies. Thanks to Ross and Linda Alcock for their dedicated work, and we look forward to collaborating with Luke Griffiths in his new role as General Manager.

Exciting developments are also underway with the STA, encouraging more swim schools to use existing school swimming facilities or adapt commercial spaces. Look out for more on this in the SPATEX workshop, which will feature sessions for swim school owners and pool contractors.

The benefits of warm water immersion are well documented, and there is hope that collaborations with UK universities can provide similar insights into cold water immersion. We’ve engaged with Coventry University and the University of Portsmouth to help research the specific benefits of water leisure products. Stay tuned for updates on these projects. An industry subgroup has been working to produce guidance on cold-water immersion, aiming to release this information by the New Year. A consumer factsheet is also now available on the BISHTA website. Internationally, EUSA and WAPSA offer

In this final issue of the year, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes takes a look at some of the year’s highs, plus thanks the various individuals that have contributed to the work of the associations during the last 12 months

valuable opportunities for sharing best practices. At the 8th WAPSA meeting in Lyon, attendees discussed market insights, education and environmental initiatives. There was also some benchmarking on the work undertaken by national associations, and for the first time, a ‘Pool Positive’ marketing subgroup was introduced to expand member benefits further. SPATEX 2025 – It’s For, And All About, The Industry!

As the UK’s one and only water leisure exhibition, SPATEX is a flag bearer for the industry and, of course, a unique promotional platform for its hundred plus exhibiting companies, but perhaps less obvious is how the show can act as an equally valuable tool for individual self-advancement too

Returning to the Coventry Building Society Arena from Tuesday 4 to Thursday 6 February, SPATEX has done the hard work. So rock up, reconnect with the wider industry and reap the benefits. The industry has to go, to be in the know!

EXPAND KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

SPATEX is known as much for its free Industry training and education as it is for being the UK’s water leisure showcase. The exhibition’s impressive double seminar, including the ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) technical workshop programme, is a cornerstone of the event and, running on all three days of the show, it covers all the latest, need-to-know health and safety guidance plus many brand-new topics. 2025 sees the extension of CPD accreditation. Following previous years, attendance at all the ISPE Workshops is rewarded with a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) point and a Certificate of Attendance which acts as a valuable record of the courses attended. New for this year, all the STA seminars in Arena 2 will now offer half a CPD point.

For commercial pool operators, there’s now specific seminars catering for this sector’s needs. The Pool Plant Theatre sees the Institute of Swimming (IOS), collaborating with the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA), Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) and Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) to offer a series of hands-on workshops, speaker panels and a forum. There will be four sessions on Tuesday afternoon and four on Wednesday morning.

BOOST CREATIVITY AND INSPIRATION

SPATEX is a feast for the eyes and a treat for the brain! With lots of new companies making their Coventry debut, and many of the more established exhibitors displaying a host of new products, it’s a great hunting ground. Exposure to the latest innovations will help attendees formulate new ideas and keep abreast of global trends to ensure projects reflect the best in the marketplace. Take advantage of SPATEX exclusives – special discounted prices, offers and competitions. A New Product Zone (proudly sponsored by SPN) highlights the products that look set to make the headlines in the pool season

ahead. New ways to save energy will be high on the 100 plus international and domestic exhibitors’ agenda, so expect new products that support low energy and a low carbon footprint.

SHOWCASING TALENT

Attend the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards Gala Evening (hosted by BISHTA & SPATA) for dinner, dancing and live entertainment on the Tuesday evening. It’s an awards ceremony for everyone. To book seats, contact the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) on 01264 356210/1 or email admin@bspf.org.uk. The BSPF will be showcasing photographs of the best examples of design, construction and installation of the winning projects on its stand (A1).

Fun Gaming Evening in the Arena’s Casino, complete with SPATEX’s own croupiers and a delicious Mexican chilli.

TAKE A FRESH APPROACH TO BUSINESS

A NETWORKING AND PROFILE RAISING OPPORTUNITY

SPATEX offers the potential to meet over a thousand industry personnel in just one day. Attendees can meet the names to know and increase their visibility. With all the industry’s key figures assembled in one place, SPATEX provides a one-off chance in 2025 to make valuable connections. Interactions with exhibitors and other visitors can lead to collaborations, commissions and job opportunities. So don’t forget the business cards!

Away from the show floor, attendees can take advantage of a host of other networking opportunities. For instance, all visitors and exhibitors are warmly invited to join the SPATEX Networking Party in the Coventry Building Society Arena Clubhouse on the Wednesday at 5pm after the show closes, for industry chat, free canapés and drinks, and a very collectible SPATEX gift. This will be followed at 7pm by a dedicated SPATEX

As both a nerve centre and weathervane, SPATEX plays a vital role in breathing new life into the wet leisure industry. Attendees can get in the swim of things by exposing themselves to new markets too. Visitors are drawn from a wide variety of professions and disciplines eg builders, architects, school bursars, holiday park owners, specifiers, leisure managers etc. – such is the vibrancy and fast pace of the industry, each SPATEX brings something new.

THE PERSONAL TOUCH

Come to the SPATEX Help Desk at the entrance of the Hall where visitors will be assured of immediate attention. SPATEX Organiser, Michele Bridle and Show Co-ordinator, Helen Mulingani, will be wearing shirts bearing the SPATEX logo in their walkabouts at the show so do stop and chat if there are any queries.

Swimming In A Tin

These last few years, the STA has seen more and more swim schools start to build and have control over their own pools – a trend that is expected to continue. Interestingly, they are not all being built in obvious places and they are not all conventionally built pools. A prime example of this is ‘Swim In A Tin’, as Zoe Cooper, STA’s Commercial Director, discovered

For any swim school, deciding to build a swimming pool is a huge decision and commitment, but for Nick Timms and Helen Barge, who are business owners with no prior experience of swimming teaching or managing a pool, this was a walk into the relative unknown. Their business – Swim In A Tin – features an endless pool housed in ‘tin’ containers on a farm in Leamington Spa, and Zoe Cooper caught up with Nick and Helen, to ask them why they wanted to do it.

Nick: We both enjoyed our own swimming journeys but always felt that we could provide an improved customer experience in a private environment. Therefore, when we were presented with the opportunity to develop a small private swimming experience using an endless pool (approximately 14ft by 8ft by 3ft where you swim against a current… not Olympic size), we grasped it. The opportunity to make it a business came relatively quickly, and with Helen and I having a blend of different management skills through our ‘day jobs’, we were very familiar with the challenges of setting up and running a small business. But admittedly, this one was far harder than perhaps we thought!

Helen: Also important to add is that we wanted a business that was all in our control – we had a very clear vision of the quality experience that we wanted to provide to all our customers. As owners of our own pool, we have complete autonomy over how that is achieved.

WHERE

DID THE

JOURNEY BEGIN,

AND WHY ‘A SWIMMING POOL IN A CONTAINER’?

Nick: We had already bought the endless pool which was (relatively) straightforward forward, and it had a lead time of 9-11 months when we purchased it in December 2020. The next part was finding the right location which proved to be far more difficult.

Luckily, we found ourselves talking to the amazing team at Squab Leamington. Then our hearts sank when they suggested using a container. My imagination conjured up a picture of a cold, rusty old container. It was hardly the tailored, friendly and boutique experience we were hoping to create.

Fortunately, the reality couldn’t be more different and once we fully engaged with the

possibilities, Swim in a Tin was born.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE

CONTAINERS THEMSELVES

Nick: We originally were going to have two containers, but when we finalised our design, we went with three. This allowed us to maximise the experience and support and create:

• A small reception

• A waiting area with a pool view

• Pool room with a shower and space for the instructor to walk around the pool

• An accessible toilet

• Two large private changing rooms with private showers and space to change, even for parents and children.

The containers are flexible spaces, are fully configurable, have a small footprint and therefore met our requirements − they just need power, water and drainage.

Pool plant wise, we also wanted to keep

chlorine usage to a minimum, and we use an auto-dosing system along with UV cleaning to address this.

WHO ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS?

Helen: Our customer base is diverse, ranging from top-level triathletes to those who are completely new to swimming – and fresh for 2024 is hydrotherapy. As swimming at the Tin is very private – no crowds of people, minimal noise, etc., we also have several autistic and ADHD customers. For us as owners, we feel very privileged to be able to provide something that makes a real difference not just to them, but also their families.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TO OTHER SWIM SCHOOLS, AND IF YES, WHY?

Nick / Helen: Yes – the flexibility of the container means that the layout can be tailored to individual school needs and takes a relatively small footprint. It is your space and is available 24/7. Contact the company via their website at www.swiminatin.com

If you are thinking of building a pool, the STA team will be at SPATEX 2025 hosting workshops and speaker panels, or pop along to stand H19.

World’s Largest Baby Swim School

Proudly Utilises Waterco Equipment

In this issue, we take a closer look at Water Babies’ Splash Cove swim school facility which opened in July. Located in Washington, West Sussex, the top-tier swimming pool features various pieces of equipment from the Waterco brand and was completed by local wet leisure specialists Bell Leisure

In an era where early childhood education increasingly recognises the importance of physical activity, Water Babies, the UK’s largest baby and toddler swimming school has taken a significant leap forward with the unveiling of its new swimming pool, Splash Cove, earlier this year. Constructed by Bell Leisure Pools and outfitted with Waterco commercial equipment, the facility is a testament to the School’s commitment to providing top-tier facilities for students.

“Bell Leisure Pools, renowned for its expertise and quality pool construction, has once again demonstrated mastery with this project,” commented Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher. “The new 60m3 Aquaflex-lined pool is not just a place for fun and games; it’s a meticulously crafted environment designed to enhance the learning experience for young swimmers.

The attention to detail in the pool’s design and surroundings ensures safety, accessibility and enjoyment, catering to

the unique needs of children learning to swim.”

Equally impressive is the choice of Waterco commercial equipment: two SMDD1200 Micron 4 bar commercial sand filters and two Hydrostar Commercial 5.5hp pumps that are controlled by Waterco Variable Frequency Drives to ensure the ultimate in filtration, energy saving and performance.

Manufactured from high-grade, non-corrosive materials and employing the latest in proprietary winding technology, Waterco’s Micron Commercial Filter range features continuous strands of fibreglass filament that create vessels with refined consistency and superior quality. The filter’s 1200mm media bed also ensures that finer dirt particles and colloidal substances are retained to a far greater level than a filter with a shallower bed depth.

The company’s Hydrostar Plus pumps incorporate the latest technology in design and construction to produce a high performance self-priming pump. Constructed from an injection moulded glass reinforced

thermoplastic that possesses superior mechanical and chemical resistance compared to steel. Its pump body is manufactured utilising stateof-the-art engineering plastic moulding for extra strength.

As one of the leaders in the pool equipment industry, Waterco is known for its durable, efficient and eco-friendly products, and by equipping the new pool with Waterco technology, Water Babies has ensured a reliable and safe aquatic environment.

This integration of toptier equipment underscores the school’s dedication to providing a superior learning experience, minimising risks while maximising the benefits of water-based activities.

“Parents can take comfort in knowing that their children are not only learning an essential life skill but doing so in a stateof-the-art facility,” said Fisher. He added: “The combination of Bell Leisure Pools’ construction expertise and Waterco’s advanced equipment provides an unparalleled environment for

young swimmers.

“The collaboration with Bell Leisure Pools and Waterco reflects a thoughtful investment in quality and safety, recognising that the best learning environments are those that are well-designed and wellequipped.”

At the pool’s opening, Caroline Braund, Water Babies Sussex West Franchisee, said the team was excited to finally open the new facility and provide families in the local area with more lessons to teach their little ones how to swim, and learn a skill for life.

“It’s been a truly collaborative project with Bell Leisure, and we’re thrilled with the final product which gives customers a premium swimming experience,” she advised.

Lawrence Pearce, a Director at Bell Leisure, was equally thrilled with the new facility. Speaking earlier in the year, he said: “It’s been a great project to work with the Water Babies team and build this new swimming pool facility where families can enjoy and learn to swim.

“Our new office is right next door, so we’re looking forward to seeing the local community enjoying the pool.”

Water Babies’ new pool is a shining example of what can be achieved when excellence in construction and equipment meets a dedication to early childhood development. It sets a high standard for educational facilities and serves as an inspiring model for others to follow.

Budget Swim Spas That Pack A Punch

For anyone wanting to both relax and exercise in water, entry-level swim spas tick each box along with the budget box too! Often chosen as a replacement for a traditional small pool, these counter-current equipped products, aimed at price conscious families rather than athletes that need a serious training aid, are an introduction to the world of swim spas. With retail prices up to and just over the £20,000 mark, we take a look at what’s available

As a single product offering the combined benefits of both a small swimming space and a hot tub or spa environment in a relatively affordable and straightforward to own and maintain package, it’s not surprising that entry-level swim spas have fared well over recent seasons in the UK.

For families who want to provide some water based fun and entertainment but without splashing out too much, there’s clearly a lot to like. The versatility of the products found at the lower end of the swim spa price range mean that owners have an area where the kids can let off some steam, and at other times, there’s also the option of a dedicated pool for some gentle exercising.

When the kids aren’t around, there’s a further option of a calming space in which to relax and soothe away any aches and pains.

As an introduction to counter-current swimming, entry-level options provide a package which has always represented nothing short of outstanding value for money – something which adds to their appeal for many in these belt-tightening times – and this, combined with their multi-use ability has ensured their continued popularity.

With a number of manufacturers providing budget-friendly swim spa options, we take a closer look at some of the available models.

ACTIVEPLUS EP-12 – THE STARTING POINT OF ARTESIAN’S TIDALFIT RANGE

Artesian Spas released its first TidalFit swim spa model, the EP-14, back in 2008. Since then, they have introduced a wide range of quality models to suit all swim spa needs and budgets – all built to the same world-class standards in quality that the brand is famous for.

Sitting as the entry-level option in an eight model range, the ActivePlus EP-12 is the perfect size swim spa to fit in smaller spaces. Available as above-ground or semi in-ground, and with Dual Swim Jets as standard plus an option to upgrade to TidalFit’s popular Quad Swim Jets to take aqua training to the next level, this model is perfect for intermediate and beginner swimmers.

Artesian Spas are famous for producing the ultimate in hydro-massage technology and the optional hydrotherapy systems found on the TidalFits are no different. Available on most models, these systems provide numerous Helix™ jets with their very own hydrotherapy pump, driving deep into the muscle tissue for a truly remarkable hydro-massage. This option is the perfect addition to relax muscles and unwind following a workout session.

Each TidalFit swim spa comes as standard

with a high efficiency 24 hour Whisperpure™ circulation system, an exclusive smart energy insulation where the space between the maintenance-free cabinet and the structure is filled with highly insulating Icynene™ brand foam, plus a heavy-duty thermal spa cover which works to ensure the best rate of heat retention available.

The ActivePlus EP-12 is also available with a wide range of optional extras, meaning each can be customised to suit individual needs and goals. Upgrade the water care system to Diamond AOP, brighten up the garden space with Dynabrite lighting, add a BBA fully integrated sound system or add resistant swim tethers, cords or rowing bars.

PASSION’S ACTIVITY MODELS –FOUR UNIQUE VALUE FOR MONEY OPTIONS

For the last three decades, Netherlandsbased Passion Spas has been engineering and manufacturing numerous spa and hot tub models and the company has perhaps one of the widest ranges of swim spas on the market.

All of the company’s models represent great value for money so it’s no surprise that their entry-level products have always been popular and they have been keen always to offer new models that keep up with the latest technology and trends.

The TidalFit ActivePlus EP12 model is perfect for intermediate and beginner swimmers and has plenty of options
Passion Spas’ Activity 1 Deep is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds

SWIM SPAS – ENTRY LEVEL

One of the company’s newest series of swim spas is the Activity, and the range offers models with two different lengths and two depths, providing flexibility at a key price point. Whether the Activity 1, 1 Deep, 2 or 2 Deep is chosen, each model is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds.

On one side there is all the comfort, pleasure and therapy benefits of a traditional spa or hot tub which is provided by 50 massage jets, whilst on the other side, the swim function is equipped with Passion Spas’ unique River Swim System™ and Current-lift Technology™.

The River Swim system consists of two floor jets and five large swim jets, placed in a row to create a steady flow of water over the entire width of the swim spa. Users can control the intensity of the water stream and when doing so, the flow is equally divided over the whole width of the current.

Because of this unique technique, the water stream covers a wide area and is effectively positioned below the water surface, enabling users to swim with their head comfortably above water.

If the intensity of the River Swim System is decreased, the Current-Lift Technology is automatically activated, enabling the swimmer to remain in the prone position.

LATEST MARDI GRAS AND AMAZON MODELS DRAW ON THEIR HERITAGE

Catalina Spas™ launched their all-new Mardi Gras party / swim spa in spring last year and followed up with a new Amazon model.

The original Mardi Gras was the UK’s first all-seater party / swim spa and over the years many hundreds were sold, with the model made popular by its size and unique seating, exercise facilities and the low water volume meaning lower running costs.

The new Mardi Gras was the first swim spa produced from the brand’s very own factory and features a number of changes and upgrades.

Measuring 3,850 x 2,280 x 1,300mm and with a water capacity of 5,500 litres, the latest Mardi Gras model features three adjustable River Jets and can seat up to 11 bathers. With an RRP which has crept up to £18,995 inc. VAT, it still represents some serious value for money.

If a larger model is required, the 16ft all new, single temp Amazon swim spa is ideal for both family use and for swimming enthusiasts.

Measuring 4,880 x 2,260 x 1,400mm and with a water capacity of 8,000 litres, the Amazon takes inspiration from the original model and users can enjoy personalised hydrotherapy with three adjustable river jets, complemented by the mesmerising ambiance created by two LED water blades. Elevate the experience further with crystal-clear audio from two pop-up speakers and a subwoofer, all powered by the integrated Bluetooth™ music system. Ensure purity with both ozone and UV purification, all while LED lights in and around the spa set the perfect mood.

With an RRP set at £22,995 inc. VAT this, together with the new Mardi Gras are excellent entry-level options.

WELLIS’ DANUBE W-FLOW PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE WORKOUT OPTIONS

Wellis have had great success with their swim spa range which has been enhanced regularly over recent years and their current entrylevel model – the Danube – has benefitted greatly from both design and technology improvements.

The base model is powered by an impressive W-Flow System where users can choose between six-speed levels from the slowest, most comfortable ‘floating’ setting, right up to the hardest exercise workout.

Similar to a modern treadmill, users can predefine the swimming speeds one after another, so slower stages can be inserted between swimming sprints and custom workouts can be created.

The width of the water flow within the W-Flow is only 50-60cm and the flow rate can be adjusted between 0.4-2.5 km/h.

Inside the latest model, the appearance has been simplified, lines are much cleaner and more modern looking, plus the space has been optimised. Wellis have included two massage seats which are located either side of the water flow system, meaning owners can use the Danube for professional swimming and to enjoy a relaxing massage too. Rear filter housings have also been placed at the end of the swimming area so that the active water area is more than 50cm wider than before.

As with all three models in the Wellis swim spa range, a more expensive Turbine option

is also available and both these Danube variants feature UV-C water sanitisers, LED lighting, Thermo cover and Wi-Fi smartphone connectivity plus an AquaSoul 4.1 sound system as standard, meaning owning, entertaining within or working out in either Danube is sure to be a lot easier and a lot more fun too.

Wellness Options That Provide A Warm Feeling

For years, access to warm wellness experiences including a sauna, steam room or other temperature-based environments meant either holidays or expensive hotels, destination spas or similar exclusive settings. Hot tubs aside, over recent times, the availability of these products has become much more widespread. Whilst still a niche sector, it seems that the temptation to invest in wellness products that involve heat is now proving irresistible and here we focus on some just of the options

Complete wellness encompasses both physical and mental wellbeing so it’s important to ensure that each side is provided for. Thankfully, there are various products that offer this support and a number of them do so through the use of heat therapy. Putting hot tubs to one side, these include saunas, steam options and a number of other temperature-based solutions that can be located both indoors and increasingly outdoors too.

Despite the rise of cold therapy, warm options are still the preferred choice for many and it’s no surprise why. As the warmth permeates down to the body core to relax and soothe tired muscles and joints, the mind is free to wander and unwind – and that’s not something you can say about cold therapy products!

With advances in technology enabling smaller and more compact units to be developed, this has made products more accessible too, especially to those who are limited on space.

BRING THE FINNISH TRADITION TO YOUR NEXT PROJECT

Almost Heaven Saunas have been building easy-to-assemble saunas in the Finnish tradition for over 40 years and their range of barrel saunas are now available in the UK,

exclusively from Certikin.

Now part of the Harvia Group, one of the world’s leading sauna brands, the saunas come complete with the latest Harvia equipment. Other features include interior LED lighting, tempered glass, stainless steel bands, hinges and fasteners, weatherresistant plastic support cradles and handcrafted lumber profiles and end sections.

A great addition to any home, the circular design of a barrel sauna eliminates unused air space allowing them to heat up quickly and evenly, making them hugely efficient.

The solid wood construction is built to last and allows the Finnish sauna experience to be brought to any location the sauna is installed.

The Huntington and Princeton models are designed for up to six people and measure over 2.3m in length making them perfect for entertaining. The Audra and Pinnacle models are 1.8m and will accommodate up to four people. The canopy style barrel Audra and Huntington incorporate exterior benching within the canopy ideal for cooling off between saunas.

New for 2025, the range is further enhanced with

the addition of the Onyx lumber upgrade. Available in both the Pinnacle and Princeton design, these new models offer a sleek and modern look. The exterior is made from stained Hem-Fir lumber with the benches made from a contrasting clear Hem-Fir with LED mood lighting and a black steel wall heater to complete the look.

TWO WAYS TO KEEP A HEALTHY BOTTOM LINE FROM GOLDEN COAST

Tylö, the iconic name in Swedish sauna and steam has been distributed in the UK by Golden Coast for over 30 years. Tylö create sauna, infrared and steam wellness experiences with a Scandinavian design aesthetic for the modern lifestyle.

Tylö’s current flagship product is the Reflection, a sauna room that gets its name from its stunning smoked glass front that beautifully reflects on the outside. Once users step inside, they’re greeted by a central portal that leads them to the heart of the sauna where they can relax and reflect.

The portal features LED lighting on the side, three

spotlights, a built-in Elite control panel and integrated high-quality Bluetooth stereo speakers. Reflection can be built flat to the wall or as a corner unit.

Tylo’s range of Harmony saunas can be designed by using a web-based 3D Configurator that allows the design of every aspect for the perfect, bespoke sauna. The design is then used to produce a quote and then order a pack of prefabricated panels that make building a bespoke sauna as easy as assembling a kit.

At the opposite end of the spectrum from Reflection’s and Harmony’s polished wood and smoked glass is the PortaSauna; a portable sauna tent that can be enjoyed anywhere from the garden to the beach. The PortaSauna can be set up and heated to 90°C in under 25 minutes and the quilted panelling has exceptional heat retention. PortaSauna is heated by a steel, woodburning stove that is easy to light and maintain.

Each of these saunas provide the health benefits that have attracted people to sauna bathing for a thousand years. In all that time, it seems like interest in sauna has never been so strong as it is today.

BRITISH MADE STEAM GENERATION FROM HUMIDITY SOLUTIONS

Humidity Solutions offer different products that can provide both humidification, and if required, dehumidification for any customer’s spa and sauna.

Their primary product for creating humidification for a wellness environment are the Vapac VS steam generator units, which are available in three sizes. These units are easy to install and can provide a steam room or spa with up to 30kg/hr of steam.

Each is controlled by a built in temperature sensor and controller within the unit that comes pre-configured for ultimate ease of use when installing the unit. Not only are these units easy to install, they are simple and inexpensive to maintain as a result of their readily available disposable steam cylinder which can be specified for the specific water

quality at any site to prolong the lifespan of the unit. Humidity Solutions keep a large stock of these units and their spares so they cannot be beaten on lead times. Following any order, they can get a unit or spare parts to customers within two days.

Whether investing in a domestic or commercial steam room, reliability and efficiency are key when choosing a steam generator and Vapac’s VS range has been the go-to steam generator for the steam bath sector for many years and offers outstanding reliability and versatility. The British manufactured Vapac range is supplied exclusively in the UK by Humidity Solutions, a company with an established reputation in the market.

HEAT UP THE SAUNA WITH SOLAR ENERGY AND KIRAMI’S NEW COLLECTION

Finnish hot tub and sauna manufacturer Kirami’s new sauna collection, the Kirami FinVision® Sauna Tile, is revolutionising outdoor sauna traditions with its innovative technical solutions, ecological considerations and enhanced sauna experience.

The electric sauna in this new collection

can be installed even in locations where the electrical grid does not reach, thanks to optional solar panels and a battery system.

The world’s first off-the-grid electric sauna, the Kirami FinVision® Sauna Tile models M and S are energy-efficient and even energyautonomous options for outdoor sauna experiences.

Normally, a 9-kilowatt heater is installed in an electrically heated outdoor sauna, but the larger M model features Harvia’s Delta 3.6-kilowatt heater, while the S model is equipped with a 2.4-kilowatt Harvia Delta heater.

Smaller heaters were chosen for these saunas due to their effective thermal insulation and triple-pane windows and doors.

These solutions contribute to the saunas’ high energy efficiency.

The basic model of the sauna is connected to the electrical grid in the usual manner, but it is also available as the market’s first industrially manufactured option, which includes a solar panel and a battery. This off-the-grid solution allows the sauna to be used in locations where the electrical grid does not reach.

The panels and battery system are supplied as a ready-to-use package with

KUUSI AND KASKI – BARREL SAUNA OPTIONS FROM SCP UK

At the start of 2023, SCP UK added two new barrel sauna options from the Garden Leisure brand to their already extensive heat therapy line up.

‘Kuusi’ means spruce in Finnish and refers to the type of wood from which one of the new sauna barrels is made. Available in three different sizes, the Kuusi model fits into almost any garden and is available with a number of configuration options and includes a roof covering made from black bitumen roof shingle. One variant offers a small terrace with seating, so users can maximise rest and relaxation outside the cabin too.

If users prefer more daylight within the cabin, they can choose from two different rear window elements to let the sunshine in –half moon or full glass.

The idea for the other new barrel sauna was that if it fell on ‘fertile soil’ a Finn would say ‘Kaski’.

Like the Kuusi model, the new Kaski sauna offers a cosy atmosphere of a barrel combined with the option of a view and is also available in half moon or full glass along with three different sizes.

The biggest visible difference between the two new models is the dark Thermo-Pine

wood of the Kaski which harmonises perfectly with the lime interior and gives the whole barrel a stylish touch.

Thermally modified wood is a natural, non-toxic alternative to chemically treated wood products for the home. The wood is essentially ‘cooked’ in oxygen-free ovens at high temperatures which changes the cellular and molecular make up of it by removing all organic compounds from the wood cells.

In essence, the cooking of the wood creates a naturally durable product that will, in theory, be permanently resistant to water, fungus, insects and decay.

New for next season, SCP UK have added Harvia indoor and outdoor saunas along with woodburning heaters too.

BARREL OR CUBE? THE CHOICE IS YOURS WITH HEKLA

Available through Superior Wellness, Hekla saunas are a brand that offers the both barrel and cube models.

There’s two barrel sizes to choose from, seating four or six people, plus three cube sizes which will accommodate two, four or six guests.

The saunas have been inspired by nature using baltic sauna traditions and have been built with natural materials in a sustainable way.

Hekla saunas have been designed to improve wellness, encourage relaxation, spend quality time with loved ones and lead happier, healthier and more tranquil lives.

Hekla saunas are built with thermowood which is 100% natural. The heat treatment process is chemical-free and the improved performance is achieved simply by the

controlled application of heat and steam.

The wood material is certified Nordic spruce which is sourced from northern european forests and grown with sustainable practices. Thermally modified nordic spruce is aesthetically pleasing wood material that is significantly more durable and stable than conventional timber.

Built with solid wood staves, the structural integrity of both models can withstand even the harshest outdoor environment.

The notched staves create a tight, secure fit that will last a lifetime without the excessive use of fasteners. Shingles are also provided on the roof to protect the sauna and increase the insulation.

There are two options for heating for each sauna including an electric heater and a wood burning stove. Superior Wellness recommend using Harvia for both heating options.

Superior Wellness’ Hekla cube saunas are available in three sizes which will accommodate 2, 4 or 6 guests

A Cover Up Providing The Ultimate In Safety

With accidents around water an ever-present concern, pool and spa safety will always be the highest of priorities. There are various solutions to increase peace of mind, but safety covers have been designed with a more direct and straightforward brief – to prevent unsupervised access to pools and spas directly at the source, whilst also supporting the weight of any humans or animals that may stray onto them. This issue, we focus solely on this type of cover and the options that are available

Safety measures for the UK’s swimming pools and spas are always top of the agenda for both industry and owners alike, and concerns surrounding drowning quite rightly are at the forefront of the discussion.

After all, bodies of water by their very nature, are a potential hazard which if not taken seriously, can lead to serious and life changing injuries or in some cases, unfortunately much worse.

Just one drowning death in a pool or spa is one too many, especially given that there are a wide range of products available to avoid these sad scenarios, and many of them focus on restricting direct access to the source of the danger. Wet leisure installations secured by a building, enclosure, fence, raised moving floor or slatted pool cover can often minimise and even eliminate the risks of unauthorised entry, but there are occasions when they either aren’t used or can’t be installed.

Thankfully, when it comes to providing security directly, there’s a whole sector of products that focus on answering the question of unauthorised access and in doing so, also provide that all important peace of mind too, as can be seen here from this latest selection of safety cover solutions.

PROTECT FAMILIES AND POOLS WITH PLASTICA’S POOLSAVER

With over 50 years of experience in the pool trade, Plastica know only too well the importance of safety around water, especially swimming pools.

This high-quality, low priced manual safety cover ensures it will safely support up to 100kg as per the latest French safety laws. It’s fitted with highquality stainless steel ratchet straps to help achieve almost effortless tension of the

Poolsaver™ across the pool.

Available in five colours – grey, blue, pastel green, green and beige – owners can choose the colour that best suits their swimming pool and its surroundings.

Also available is the easy to install Poolsaver™ Cover for above-ground wooden pools, which gives peace of mind to owners of these smaller options. The UV stabilised PVC cover is securely fitted to anodised aluminium tubes which hold the cover in place. Stainless steel ratchets firmly hold the cover in position, making it secure with a flush fit that attaches to brass anchor points.

This extremely adaptable cover is a great solution, adding both safety and cleanliness to the pool.

The underside of the cover on both Poolsaver™ models has a beige non-marking surface and extra wear strips to prolong the life of the system.

SAFETY COVER HERITAGE AND INNOVATION FROM COVER-POOLS

Cover-Pools are a leading manufacturer and lay claim to inventing the automatic pool cover and patented it back in 1962. Since then, they’ve been protecting families and their pools with the most innovative pool cover systems available and now these are available exclusively in the UK from AstralPool.

At Cover-Pools, they pride themselves on being one of the leaders in automatic pool cover technology innovation. The T4 family of products has been built to use high-strength stainless steel cable that is more durable and doesn’t stretch or shrink like traditional rope. This means less maintenance including less frequent pool cover adjustments and easier fabric replacements. At the heart of T4 is an exclusive mechanism and motor

built for superior durability, easy installation, maximum adjustability and seamless integration into pool designs.

The new T4™ Versa allows the creation of a more seamless pool design and features a space saving offset motor design requiring only a 14” motor side box length fitting under standard 14” coping. Also available is the T4™ Spa which has been designed with a smaller offset motor to accommodate a spa footprint whilst still providing the ultimate durability and technology that allows for cutting-edge stainless-steel cable or traditional rope drive systems.

With a Cover-Pools automatic pool cover, owners get peace of mind with the simple turn of a key. In under a minute the pool is easily covered or uncovered. The cover acts as a ‘horizontal fence’ for a pool, preventing access by children, pets and uninvited visitors.

Cover-Pools covers are tested and listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent Nationally Recognised Testing Laboratory (NRTL), as being in conformance with the applicable requirements of

performance and safety standards such as ASTM F1346-91, published by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM).

Saving up to 70% on pool operating costs, a Cover-Pools cover also helps prevent the evaporation of both precious water and expensive chemicals. It even acts as a passive solar heater by capturing the sun’s radiant heat extending the swimming season.

COVERSTAR – A GOLD STANDARD IN SWIMMING POOL SAFETY

Distributed exclusively in the UK by Certikin, Coverstar is a seamlessly integrated cover system that is super-easy to operate and provides maximum safety (complies with French safety standard NFP90-308) without comprising the pool’s appearance.

The Coverstar system features unparalleled strength and is ideal for both new builds and retrofitting to an existing pool. Supporting the weight of children, pets and even adults, it uses the exclusive Ultra Guard III vinyl composite, rather than the industry-standard vinyl, popular with other manufacturers. The high level of UV resistance offered by Ultra Guard III considerably reduces the level of colour fading compared to standard vinyl, plus it has high resistance to chlorine, acid, ozone and other pool chemicals. Furthermore, instead of using sewn webbing (which often proves to be the weak area of the cover), Coverstar uses an exclusive patented process to heat seal the webbing, prolonging the cover’s life and improving the overall operation. Independent tests show this process is more than twice as strong as competitors’ webbing sewn to the cover. The heat-sealed webbing is also colour matched to the fabric to create a beautiful finish. Furthermore, there are a variety of pit toppings to choose from, including composite decking and heavy-duty pit trays in which stones can be laid. Plus, the Coverstar is supplied with a low profile leading edge bar, UK sourced power pack and UK sourced touch button key switch too.

DRIPOOL PROVIDING OVER 35 YEARS OF POOL SAFETY

Dripool have been at the forefront of pool safety for over 35 years and remain the UK’s only designers and manufacturers of automatic safety covers, for all types of swimming pool.

One of the market leaders is their flagship Driglide under coping system and it offers several unique features. Patented beam assisted cantilevers enable the cover housing to be paved and coped identically to the rest of the pool area, giving the most aesthetically pleasing finish available, whilst allowing even the heaviest of bather to jump or dive from on top of the housing. This also ensures the cover can be housed at either end of the pool with minimal design requirements.

The patented winding extrusion and tensioned leading edge ‘super Cam’ ensures that no front beam is required, making the Driglide the only automatic swimming pool cover that completely disappears from the pool when uncovered.

The AutoSafe is the latest addition to Dripool’s range of products and is an under coping system that is predominantly designed to ensure safety, debris control and heat retention on new build, rectangular pools. Whilst the AutoSafe incorporates the same unique winding technology and exacting standards as the company’s Driglide system, it has been cleverly simplified for the more budget conscious customer.

Once installed, both of these systems

are easily operated via a discreet control panel simply by turning a key and pressing a button.

LIGHTHOUSE’S COVERSEAL ADDS SAFETY IN A UNIQUE WAY

The patented CoverSeal cover comprises a unique mechanism that allows the fabric to be cleanly unrolled onto the pool whilst locking it in place in an extra-flat, extremely discreet, parallel guide rail system.

In a change from the norm, the cover housing is driven down the length of the area to be covered, unrolling the high-quality fabric as it goes. This means freeform pools and pools with large surround areas

incorporating spas can easily be catered for.

With a maximum width of 11m and length of 26m, even the most difficult of open spaces should now be able to be covered and secured.

The fabric was developed by the Serge Ferrari brand, a world leader in this market, and offers high UV resistance, extreme climatic conditions performance and exacting standards, including AFNOR NF P90-308.

With three styles of unit available, the cover is suited to all sectors of the pool market.

The battery solar powered ‘Automatic’ model is the top of the range, combining technology, aesthetics and respect for the environment. Activated by a wired or wireless control unit (in sight of the pool), it provides optimum convenience and allows users to uncover or make the pool safe in less than a minute. This cover is chosen by demanding customers who refuse to compromise between aesthetics and performance.

OCEA AND PUSHLOCK SECURE DEL SLATTED COVER SYSTEMS

Available from Ocea UK, the patented design Pushlock safety strap system – which is compatible with DEL slatted covers – ticks all the boxes and breaks traditional design boundaries. No more trip hazards on the edge of the pool or tricky clips to contend with.

This aesthetically pleasing lock secures the safety strap and with its user-friendly design, it offers easy installation and assembly meaning the replacement of the strap is effortless. When it comes to installation, the Pushlock can be submerged in the water because it is high water level compatible as it is made from highly resistant ABS material. Straps won’t discolour either as the PVC coated fabric prevents it from getting dirty and turning green. Additionally, as there’s a variety of colours to choose from, pool owners can select a strap to match the colour of their slats!

In the event a person or animal stepped onto the cover, pool owners have peace of mind that the patented Pushlock safety strap system will prevent the cover from submerging and causing endangerment to life.

The Pushlock forms part of Ocea UK’s stocked ‘off the shelf’ range where products can be picked up the same day from their new Trade Centre facility in Witney.

Control Is The Key To Water Quality

As increasingly high tech dosing pumps and control systems quietly go about the business of applying the correct amounts of chemicals to leisure water, it’s sometimes easy to forget the role these reliable products play in making the lives of owners and operators so much easier. In fact, as shown, the latest innovations mean ensuring the management of safe water plus other connected equipment has never been as simple or more convenient!

To have perfectly clear and safe water within pools and spas is the holy grail for both owners and operators alike. After all, safety must always be at the top of the list when it comes to water leisure. Convenience comes in second though, and for both commercial operators and an increasing number of domestic owners too, it’s reassuring to know that there are products and systems that expertly and conveniently control water treatment automatically, and in doing so, make the task simple plus remove any guesswork.

Commercial facilities have enjoyed the comfort of automation for many years but as technology has advanced and along with the ranges from manufacturers, domestic owners have now got firmly behind these solutions and the many benefits they offer.

In many systems, automatic management can be extended beyond just water supervision, with these single solutions being responsible for lighting, heating, maintenance routines or other tasks too. In many cases, remote operation is possible too, with systems being controlled via a smartphone, tablet or computer, meaning a pool or spa can be primed and ready for use well before the user has even donned any swimming gear. In fact, today’s systems are less complicated and a lot more user-friendly than expected, meaning that the most technically unskilled person can ensure perfect water management and more.

Today’s automated systems offer more than just precision, they also put a big emphasis on flexibility, reliability and convenience and we take a look at what’s available.

LUTZ-JESCO’S MEMDOS SMART RANGE OFFERS ACCURACY AND CONVENIENCE

within swimming pool water treatment over the last several decades from dosing of sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite for disinfection and hydrochloric acid for pH correction.

Initially dosing pumps employed stroke length adjustment to alter output by reducing the volumetric stroke per pulse and then manual speed in addition to regulate the stroke frequency, i.e. number of strokes per minute.

In the last two decades, dosing pumps have seen tremendous developments that include digital displays highlighting flow rate in l/h or ml/h making them easier to use within all chemical metering applications and to automatic degassing heads or valves for sodium hypochlorite.

Lutz Jesco have built on these

developments with their Memdos Smart metering pumps that feature a removable display for wall mounting when pump installation is difficult to access. A clear user interface with structured menu navigation ensures simple and understandable operation plus password protection is freely adjustable for different menu areas, thus allowing different user levels / releases.

With the new stepper motor technology, even the smallest quantities can be metered with a high degree of accuracy. Memdos Smart LBX/LDX options with variable speed stepper motor dosing pumps offer quieter, smoother and almost continuous dosing for chlorine and acid with the company’s Memdos Smart LDX 2 model proving to be an ideal pump for dosing PAC down at 2.5ml/h.

Solenoid dosing pumps have been the mainstay for chemical dosing applications

CENTURIO POOL AN ALL ENCOMPASSING MULTIPARAMETER CONTROLLER

Manufactured by EMEC and supplied by Certikin, the CENTURIO POOL can simultaneously manage up to ten channels to read multiple parameters such as pH, free chlorine, total chlorine, a derived combined chlorine reading, conductivity and ORP. Traditionally, operators concentrate on monitoring and manually testing their free chlorine and pH levels. However, engaging with other areas of water quality could have a positive impact on energy and water savings. Take Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) as an example. With a CENTURIO POOL owners can have a conductivity probe so that TDS can be continually monitored and displayed alongside free chlorine and pH.

The deterioration of water quality against TDS data could allow an operator to implement an operational dilution program at the lowest possible cost. This is just one example of how interacting with water quality data can assist with better managing utility costs.

ERMES can be logged into remotely via any web enabled device. All chemical controller parameters can be viewed in real time. Moreover, CENTURIO POOL can be programmed to text (SMS) or email pre-set users a list of parameters on request in the event of an alarm being triggered such as low level in the chemical tank or an out of range value. Multiple installations on the same site can be linked through the same account.

Aside from the initial hardware, ERMES is free to use with no subscription fees. Certikin can not only supply the board mounted controller with a client’s choice

of sensors, chemical dosing pumps, dosing tanks and connectivity, but can also arrange a full installation, commissioning and training service. Additionally, a service contract tailored to satisfy the individual site requirements can also be arranged.

EUROPEAN INDUSTRY AWARDS

European Pool And Spa Award Winners Announced

In this issue, we highlight all the winning entries from the 2024 EUSA Awards, which were presented in November during the Piscine Global exhibition in Lyon, France

The European Pool and Spa Awards, organised annually by the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA), honour the most exceptional residential pools, spas and hot tubs within the Wet Leisure Industry. Each year, winners from across Europe compete for top recognition in this prestigious event.

Following the 2024 awards ceremony, Europe’s most stunning swimming pool builds and hot tub installations have been revealed. This marks the 12th edition of these esteemed awards, with the announcements being made on Tuesday 19 November, at Piscine Global in Lyon.

SPATA are delighted to announce that Centurion Leisure, based in Essex, has won a Bronze award in the ‘Domestic Spas’ category.

BISHTA is also delighted to announce that SpaFlo, based in Cheshire, has been awarded a Silver in the ‘Domestic Hot Tubs’ category.

In the 2024 competition, 218 pools from 12 countries participated: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain,

Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK.

The unique thing about the EUSA Awards is that it is a competition in which ‘the best of the best’ projects are chosen because the national associations usually send the winners of their respective swimming pool and hot tub competitions as the shortlisted entries. Therefore, SPATA and BISHTA have again submitted shortlisted entries from the winners of the relevant categories of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards.

EUSA President Pedro Arrebola Conde oversaw the 2024 Awards ceremony in Lyon. This year, winners came from seven countries: the UK, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

The awards ceremony has been hosted annually since 2013 by EUSA in collaboration

with the national pool associations from Europe. This year, there were winners in the following eight domestic categories: Indoor Pools, Outdoor Pools, Pools With An Enclosure, Pools With An Automatic Cover, Pools By Night, Spas, Hot Tubs and Pool Renovation.

BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) and SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) shortlisted the UK entries for the European Pool & Spa Awards from their respective winners in the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, which are held during SPATEX, the UK’s annual trade exhibition.

SPATA and BISHTA congratulate all winners, including the associations, their members and the companies shortlisted this year.

Water Filtration For A Wet Leisure Nation

Some of the most important products that lie at the heart of any efficient water cleansing system are those which are associated with filtration. With innovations leading to improved durability and performance plus a reduction in water use, filters are one of the first places to start looking at when it comes to combining cost savings with the effective management of water. Here, we take a closer look at some of the filter options that are on offer

With a wide range of needs in the environments that filter products operate within, it should come as no surprise that there is also a vast number of options to choose from for managing and providing clear water in swimming pool and spa settings – and that’s without even touching on the various types of cartridge or filtration media options that are also available!

Filters – whether working under pressure on a daily basis at the largest of commercial swimming pools or when operating on a much smaller domestic pool which gets minimal use in comparison – help to ensure water quality is the best it can possibly be, regardless of the size of installation or the usage demands placed upon them.

Often hidden away behind the scenes and frequently viewed as somewhat low tech, there’s no doubt filters of any type, along with any filtration media and other equipment they are paired with, form a crucial role within the safe operation, management and ultimately the enjoyment of pools and spas.

Thanks to improved designs, a number of products have become more user-friendly, others are more flexible in their use, many are more long-lasting and some are adding green credentials to their list of benefits by helping to reduce the amount of water needed for efficient operation. These factors, either alone or combined, often lead to lower operating costs over the lifetime of their use, so the developments are very much welcomed by owners and operators alike, especially in these inflationary times and higher than normal energy costs.

It can often be hard to stay on top of what’s available though. So putting media aside and concentrating on the core filters and systems themselves, in this issue we highlight just some of the latest options that are on offer.

ASTRALPOOL’S VIC FILTERS A POPULAR COMMERCIAL CHOICE

Available from AstralPool UK, Vic bobbin wound filters are the company’s most popular option for commercial projects.

Featuring a new and innovative screw-top lid with quick-locking mechanism for easy access. The lid closes directly onto the filter body, eliminating the need for intermediary parts such as neck collars, rings etc. and offers straightforward access to the interior as well as saving time when opening the filter lid.

Other characteristics and enhancements include:

• The incorporation of the air purge into the top filter lid itself, ensuring total air elimination from the filter

• Newly designed, larger and more resistant ABS collector arms

• Quicker water drainage and air relief due to larger diameter purges (Ø 1”)

• An increase in the distance between the top of the sand bed and diffuser head to ensure better water distribution during the filtration stage and to avoid sand spilling into the overflow during the washing stage

• A filter bed height of 1m.

system, the risk of occasional seepage through screw holes has been avoided as well as the accompanying weakening of the area. Similarly, oxidisation problems are eliminated due to the absence of metallic parts and assembly is simplified and thus much quicker.

Thanks to the increased diameter of the collector arms, the elimination of intermediary joints and longer screw threads injected into the tubes, AstralPool have managed to achieve less load loss. Each filter is the same size as the corresponding collector arm, thus eliminating the need for intermediary joints.

Available in RAL 9002 (grey), Vic filters are backed by fantastic aftersales and technical support from AstralPool UK who will effectively manage and correctly diagnose correct spares replacements where necessary.

FOR FILTRATION NEEDS BOTH BIG OR SMALL, CERTIKIN’S RANGE COVERS IT ALL

The Certikin SLX range of commercial filters are the workhorse of a commercial pool and with a wide range covering sizes from 1.05m through to 3.00m and options for laterals and nozzles with various pressure ranges and

A HIGH-QUALITY GERMAN ENGINEERED FILTERS RANGE ARRIVES AT LIGHTHOUSE

From a quality perspective, the Behncke filter range really stands out. It’s German engineering at its best with no expense spared to ensure a filter vessel that not only performs but with its smart, smooth, clean looks it adds a more professional appearance to any plant room.

Too often the plantroom is overlooked when specifying a swimming pool and the new Global filters from Behncke, available in the UK from Lighthouse, really give that high-end look with an affordable price tag.

The filters are designed with a clear 400mm plexiglas lid, which makes visibility to the filter media bed and access for servicing straightforward. The filters come as standard with a colour coded glycerine filled pressure gauge and air relief valve.

– a patented technology by Pentair to reach a very fine level of filtration somewhat four times better than with a conventional sand filter (about 10u vs 40m), meaning the Triton Neo ClearPro™ approaches DE filter clarity with sand filter functionality.

The inlet and outlet connections are robust and a solid connection is made through the bulkhead fittings through a dedicated flat reveal on the filter body. The laterals are easy to use bayonet style twist lock, making them simple to fit.

Sizes start from ø400mm perfect for small projects, spas and plunge pools and follows on with 500, 600, 765 right up to a ø920mm unit, covering all domestic filtration needs.

If a higher volume is needed, then Lighthouse have the Buhne and Berlin ranges which are clearly designed for the commercial market. These high end filters ensure ease of servicing is kept at the forefront of the brand, with the addition of a clear side service hatch. The Buhne and Berlin both offer the extra deep bed filtration to meet the demanding requirements needed for commercial pools. Both the Buhne and Berlin ranges are also available in 500, 600, 750 and 970mm diameter options.

ESTABLISHED OR NEW – SCP HAS FILTRATION BRANDS FOR EVERY NEED

SCP UK supply a wide range of filter solutions from many leading brands within the sector including Hayward, Lacron, Pentair and Waterco. They also have a UK exclusive in the supply of SuperPool products.

One solution which has stood the test of time is the Triton Neo range from Pentair. With a reputation built over 40 years of simplicity, performance, clarity and reliability, the Triton Neo remains a favourite choice for pool owners around the globe.

SCP offer the Triton Neo with ClearPro™

Outstanding water clarity is ensured by a 360-degree diffuser which evenly spreads the water across a perfectly flat filtering bed.

Routine cleaning and backwashing are quick and safe too. A ‘swingaway’ diffuser makes for easy access when servicing, deep

cleaning or wintering.

With its seamless one-piece tank, reinforced with fibreglass and with a UV resistant coating, the Triton Neo’s outer shell is immune from corrosion and products within the range are justifiably known as some of the toughest pool filters on the market.

With top or side mount valve configurations available, there’s a model for every application.

SCP UK introduced SuperPool semicommercial filters this year which are also suitable for large private pools and spas. Available in a range of sizes, the polyester laminated tanks provide great resistance and strength, offering a maximum working pressure of 36 psi/2.5 bar. They feature UV resistance, a high strength and quick opening industrial lid, plus a tank made of noncorrosive interior/exterior materials.

TOTAL POOL’S CERAMIFLO MEMBRANES PROVIDE ULTRAFILTRATION

Total Pool have successfully established the Ceramiflo micro filtration system in the UK as a licensed sole supplier and installer.

The unit includes a fully automatic chemical cleaning system (CIP) which can exclude staff intervention and also save major costs on water, chemical and more importantly energy.

Ceramiflo membranes have a 3mu pour size which consistently filters out 85% of all 2-3mu particulates. This is an extremely robust strategy in the removal of crypto sized particulates which are understood to be 4-6mu in size.

The membranes are made of silicon carbide which is extremely durable and resistant to degradation. This compares very favourable against traditional filters which require costly media changes and refurbishments.

SCP offer the Pentair Triton Neo with ClearPro™ – a patented technology to reach a very fine level of filtration
From a quality perspective, the Behncke filter range, now available from Lighthouse, really stands out

FILTRATION

All the Ceramiflo systems installed in the UK are entirely automatic and are monitored over the internet as part of the Ceramiflo service contract. Staff intervention is now simplified with no need to operate and backwash their filters.

Ceramiflo is very compact so when old plant is due for replacement, they can often slot into the plant room with the original filters remaining.

Furthermore, they are often installed seamlessly with no interruption or disruption to bathing, due to the units having the unique ability to be completely stripped down and taken through restricted walk ways, single doors and stairs.

As a smart choice for pool operators there are some big gains to be had in terms of sustainability. Ceramiflo removes more dirt from the pool and that dirt is frequently removed from the membranes, leading to a drop in chlorine usage.

Finally, since the membranes are cleaned mainly with air, backwash water usage is reduced by up to 60%.

WATERCO MICRON SMDD, SPDD AND MD FILTERS – WITH 4 BAR AS STANDARD

In recent decades, Waterco Micron commercial media filters have become a go-to for filtration system designers worldwide.

From swimming pools to desalination plants, from fish farms to sewage treatment – the combination of high quality and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, highly cost-effective lifetime servicing costs, minimal downtime and continued investment in research and development has earned Waterco their well-deserved place at the top of the list of many a consultant’s equipment specification list.

Waterco offer Micron filters in a range

...filters of any type, along with any filtration media and other equipment they are paired with, form a crucial role within the safe operation, management and ultimately the enjoyment of pools and spas”

of maximum operating pressure ratings: 2.5 bar; 4 bar; 6 bar; and 8 bar models have been available for some time, but the range has more recently been extended to 10 bar, opening up a whole new range of opportunities within more specialist water treatment applications.

Swimming pool filtration systems typically operate at the lower end of this scale, with 2.5 bar being more than the adequate maximum for most. Waterco has observed a shift in the design requirements of consultants operating at the premium end of the market. A filter should of course be able to withstand being over-pressurised for a short period. However, rarely taken into account is the detrimental effect this can have on a freshly manufactured GRP filter.

Fibreglass resins can take many weeks (dependent on atmospheric conditions) to harden to their maximum strength and to stress the filter shells so soon after manufacture can cause micro-fissures to fracture the shell almost imperceptibly and could ultimately shorten the service life of the filter.

As a result of this shift in the industry, Waterco decided to lead the way by offering all Micron SMDD (lateral underdrains), SPDD (nozzle plate underdrains), and MD (horizontal) filters in 4 bar as standard. This upgrade was introduced without any connected price increase as a demonstration of Waterco’s ongoing commitment to leading the market in premium quality water filtration equipment.

Understanding The State And Real Value Of The Commercial Pool Sector

In this last piece of the year, we highlight some of the statistics and thoughts published in Leisure DB’s ‘The State of the UK Swimming Industry Report 2024’ which highlights the need to reframe swimming pools as valuable assets for healthy communities, rather than financial liabilities for councils and operators

Each year, Leisure DB produce their ‘The State of the UK Swimming Industry Report’ and the 2024 edition is available now. Full of useful facts, figures, case studies and importantly, views from a range of leaders working within the commercial pools sector, this 128 page publication contains thorough, unique and essential information and is a ‘must read’ for anyone wanting insights into this aspect of the pool industry.

One of the biggest take away messages from reading the analysis contained within the 2024 edition is the many challenges faced by the sector along with concerning statistical information regarding the declining number of actual pools and the direction of travel.

The report found that the number of swimming pools is declining, with a 1.8% reduction from 4,351 in 2023 to 4,272 in 2024. These figures compare to 4,559 pools reported in 2019, and despite a pause of collating the statistics due to the pandemic, the trend is clear with pools closing at a steady rate.

The report identifies key challenges for operators, including rising energy and maintenance costs, ageing infrastructure, and difficulties in recruiting personnel, including swimming teachers and lifeguards. However, it’s not all bad news as a lot of innovation is also taking place, for example, advancements in AI-assisted lifeguard technologies which are improving safety and operational efficiency.

In his foreword, after quite rightly highlighting personnel issues as a key issue, David Minton, founder of LeisureDB points out that as an industry ‘We must challenge ourselves to review how we position pools. Local authorities are focused on appropriate provision for their communities, and swimming and water-based sports are clear contributors to health and wellbeing. Going forward, we must find ways to (re)position what we offer so pools cease to be viewed as a drain on the budget and instead are celebrated for the value they bring to communities’.

As a platform, the report not only does a great job of shedding light on statistics, but also looks to highlight the challenges faced by the sector, with David also noting that ‘a number of key players are already addressing this critical task’ and references other contributors whose opinions and thoughts are published within the comprehensive report. And it’s this combination of content that makes for a truly interesting and thought provoking read.

A REBALANCING

‘We take seriously our wider responsibility of keeping local communities healthy, so this is our direction in terms of product and positioning’ comments Places Leisure’s Mark Haslam who is one such contributor with a dedicated piece. In it, he adds ‘With everything that’s going on in the broader sector the pressure on pools, with closures outweighing new openings and forecasts suggesting the number of UK facilities will halve by 2029 –we also feel a responsibility to optimise our pool assets generally’.

As an organisation, GLL, the largest provider of publicly accessible swimming pools in the UK, are already positioning their pools around health and water safety objectives. ‘Leisure feels like a choice. Health feels essential’ states Andrew Clark, GLL’s Head of Sports And Aquatics, who also has an in-depth contribution within the publication. In it, he also has some interesting thoughts on developing a standardised model for a community pool which should boost the UK’s pool stock.

Andy Salmon, Swim England’s new CEO states ‘I’m focused on better communicating the social, health and economic benefits of swimming, making a strong case for government to keep existing pools open and replace ageing stock’. Andy provides more insight within the report and highlights collaboration and speaking with one voice as a

key factor going forward.

Within another piece, Alliance Leisure’s Managing Director Paul Cluett says “We know that – with the right combination of investment, design and marketing – we can revitalise public sector pools, ushering in a new generation of modern, fit-for-purpose and above all, commercially viable pool spaces that meet the health, wellbeing and leisure needs of their local communities’. He goes on to say ‘With decades of experience working within public leisure, I’ve witnessed first-hand the profound impact of swimming pools on communities. I believe it is our duty to protect these indispensable public assets for generations to come’.

The STA’s Dave Candler urges ‘rather than wait for government handouts and subsidies, leisure centres must manage their own businesses’ and says the public sector has much to learn from the private sector when it comes to swimming provision.
