When it comes to the weather in the UK, we all know that at best, it can be fairly unpredictable, but this year has been a challenging one for an industry that needs at least the odd spell here and there of at least somewhat decent conditions, and ideally some prolonged spells of sun too. Sadly, it just didn’t happen this year. So some were saying, maybe praying, that there would be an Indian summer. Maybe... Maybe not as it turned out. It really is the hope that kills you.
important industry show on the event calendar, I suspect this year, new products and the sharing of information on how to run pools, spas and more as efficiently as possible will be the highest priority, making this even more of a ‘must-attend’ event than normal as companies look to bounce back with a strong 2025.
When it comes to sectors, and therefore features in this issue, inside we have a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche but growing sector which offers design and build flexibility resulting in some stunning and durable solutions for both high-end domestic and commercial markets alike.
Continuing on the subject of high-end, hot tubs are also under the spotlight as we look at premium models from various brands that cost in excess of £10,000.
We also take a closer look at the latest pool enclosure solutions that are extending the use of the outdoor swimming season whilst simultaneously providing security, reducing running costs and minimising the effort involved in outdoor pool ownership.
Counter-current systems are also under the spotlight as we examine the latest products which provide pools, particularly those with a smaller footprint, with a powerful option resulting in a more complete swimming pool experience.

So with the weather having definitely shifted into autumn mode, we can only lament for the summer, and therefore season, that could have been. With temperatures and leaves slowly falling, there’s a new focus for us all to pay attention to – energy costs and the efficient operation of anything using it – especially as the latest price cap which runs to the end of the calendar year has price rises of 10%.
Thankfully, to assist with the need to seek out the best ways to operate more efficiently, the wet leisure industry has been good at producing a stream of energy saving products and we always feature as many as possible within the pages of SPN. However, a great many of these are traditionally held back for release at industry shows that typically take place during the out of season autumn and winter months. These large-scale gatherings not only provide a platform for new product launches, but they also provide the chance to catch up with peers and exchange stories, advice and thoughts on the tougher than usual season which has just passed.
Inside this latest issue, we take a look at a returning biennial exhibition, France’s Piscine Global event, that takes place from 19 to 22 November in Lyon. As arguably the most
When it comes to industry suppliers, we’ve dedicated pieces on both Plastica and AstralPool UK this issue, plus a write up following a visit to Kent-based one-piece pool specialists, Aqua Technics Pools UK.
As if that wasn’t enough, Golden Coast’s Adam Clark shares his thoughts on the subject of commitment, plus the STA’s Robbie Philips highlights the dangers of suction entrapment and entanglement.
There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield.
That’s everything covered, hopefully we’ve provided a little bit of something for everyone in this latest issue, and as always, I hope you enjoy reading it.

Visitors Dip Into History At Aston University’s Swimming Baths
The oldest operational swimming baths in Birmingham welcomed both history buffs and fitness enthusiasts as part of the city’s annual heritage celebration in September.
The Woodcock Street baths, which were founded in 1860, opened its doors to visitors for three fully-booked tours to mark Birmingham Heritage Week.
The pool, which was built for ‘first class’ customers, opened in 1902 and was taken over by Aston University in 1980. It is now part of the Sir Doug Ellis Woodcock Sports Centre which is used by staff, students and the local community.
As part of the week that celebrates the city’s history, the visitors were taken on guided tours which explained how Aston University refurbished and redeveloped the building, and afterwards they were offered a free swim in the pool. The baths still retain most of their original features, while other parts of the building were constructed around the original pool in 1921 and again in 2011.
Peter Connelly, the University’s Director of Sport, said: “Our unique Edwardian pool is one of the oldest operating in the country and in addition we offer facilities such as a sports hall, converted from the 1902 ‘second class’ pool, two studios and sauna and steam rooms. As well as being an important part of the University, it also serves our
local community.”
It’s the second time this year the historic site has been in the spotlight because it was featured in the film ‘Vindication Swim’ which was released in cinemas in March. The movie is about the true story of Mercedes Gleitze who was the first British woman to swim the Channel and it features scenes shot in the Edwardian pool.
Willmott Dixon Secures Eston Swimming Pool Development

Projects Framework, the project received funding from the Government, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority.
This project, to be completed in early 2026 and operated by Everyone Active, will see a 25-metre, sixlane pool built with changing areas and a 150-seat spectator gallery.
It will also include a separate learner pool, welcoming children and young people to learn how to swim. Once opened, residents will have access to public swimming and swimming lessons as well as galas and competition swimming.

A New Charity Partner For AstralPool UK
AstralPool UK have recently announced that they have selected Sophie’s Legacy (www.sophieslegacy. co.uk) as their official charity partner moving forward. Based locally in Fareham, Sophie’s Legacy was created in memorial of Sophie Fairall and the legacy of change she wanted to create.
Sophie had just turned nine when she was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma in September 2020. During her treatment, she endured nine rounds of intense chemotherapy and seven weeks of radiotherapy.
Sophie never managed to get into remission and in June 2021, after only eight weeks on a programme of maintenance chemotherapy, she relapsed. With no treatment options left Sophie passed away aged ten, in September 2021, just one year after her diagnosis. She wanted to change
five things; play specialist seven days a week in hospitals, improvement for food in children’s hospitals and parents to be fed when staying with their child. Additionally Sophie wanted health care professionals to be trained in childhood cancer and to increase funding in childhood cancer research. It will be changes in these that will be her legacy in memory of a remarkable young girl who touched so many lives.

Dyfed Thompson-Smith, AstralPool General Manager commented: “We are delighted to have appointed Sophie’s Legacy as our charity partner and we will be working closely with Founder and CEO, Charlotte Fairall, not only to raise awareness but also to do some fundraising to support the worthwhile work they are doing.”

COUNCIL TAKES STEPS TOWARDS DELIVERY OF NEW FACILITIES
West Lancashire Borough Council is taking action to support the development of new ‘Wellbeing & Leisure Hubs’ to replace its Nye Bevan Pool in Skelmersdale and Park Pool in Ormskirk facilities, both of which are around 50 years old and at the end of their useful lives.
The Council remains committed to investment in its leisure facilities after approving £3.188m of funding for the refurbishment of Burscough Wellbeing & Leisure Hub, which is currently underway and will open in early 2025. The Council are also continuing the plans to build two new state-ofthe-art leisure facilities within the Borough.
Council Leader, Councillor Yvonne Gagen said: “To be able to afford replacement centres for Nye Bevan and Park Pool it now seems an appropriate time to embrace new and innovate build methodologies, particularly in relation to swimming pools which are the most expensive part of the construction.”
Modular pool provider Myrtha Pools is set to deliver a new state-of-the-art hydrotherapy swim offering at Surrey specialist school, Philip Southcote School, as part of wider expansion works on the school’s main campus, on behalf of Surrey County Council.
Procured through the fifth generation of the Southern Construction Framework, Morgan Sindall Construction is leading the construction work, which includes two new blocks, one of which will house the specialist hydrotherapy pool being delivered by the Myrtha Pools team.
The 20 x 8 x 1.2m pool is set to showcase cutting-edge technology which utilises offsite construction and a stainless steel makeup in favour of reduced cost and installation time, along with offering carbon reductions of up to 45%.
Also set to be delivered within the pool design are hydromassage areas to promote circulation and relaxation for users, offering increased ergonomic benefits.
Kevin Burns, UK Business Development Manager at Myrtha
Pools, said: “A core ethos for us at Myrtha Pools is providing a positive impact for our end users, and this project couldn’t be more aligned with that. Having the opportunity to boost wellness and wellbeing within an educational environment is a huge privilege and we’re looking forward to watching the project unfold alongside Morgan Sindall over the coming weeks.
“The bespoke hydrotherapy facilities we are delivering is just one example of our acceleration within the UK leisure market
over the past year. We have a growing portfolio of operators who are beginning to understand the unique benefits stainless steel pools hold over traditional concrete. We’re helping create a positive and healthy future within the leisure market and having specialist schools as part of this mix adds to the growing level of expertise we can offer right here in the UK.”

LiqTech Obtains NSF Certification For Pool System Solution
Denmark-based LiqTech International, Inc, a high-tech filtration technology company that manufactures and markets highly specialised filtration products and systems, have announced the receipt of NSF certification for their Aqua Solution® swimming pool water filtration systems. This certification not only makes it possible for LiqTech to market and sell its swimming pool water filtration systems in the US, but is also a validation of their systems too.
Compared to traditional media filtration systems that are widely used in commercial swimming pools, LiqTech’s swimming pool system solution has demonstrated a convincing value proposition according to its customers. They ensure excellent and safe water quality and contribute to a significant
reduction in carbon footprint with up to an 80% reduction in water spending, 60% lower energy consumption, and 30% lower chlorine dosing. At the same time, the system is only one-third the size of a conventional media filtration system providing for perfect retrofitting without extensive changes necessary to building construction.
The Aqua Solution® is a LiqTech ceramic filter solution for liquids with suspended solids. It integrates a dead-end structural design with cutting-edge membrane technology that is specifically designed for water pre-treatment in reverse osmosis applications, wastewater treatmen and swimming pool and spa water filtration. The dead-end design yields more cost-efficient
filtration performance compared to other filtration options. As a comparison, for the same treated water flow, traditional sand filters have pore sizes three times larger than LiqTech’s SiC membranes. Moreover, LiqTech’s Aqua Solution® reduces the number of membrane elements, pressure vessels, water consumption for backwash, and energy costs by providing high flow rates at very low pressure.
LiqTech’s swimming pool system solutions are available in the UK through Barr + Wray.

The world’s first off-the-grid electric sauna, the Kirami FinVision® Sauna Tile models M and S are energy-efficient and even energy-autonomous options for outdoor sauna experiences. Normally, a 9-kilowatt heater is installed in an electrically heated outdoor sauna, but the larger M model features Harvia’s Delta 3.6-kilowatt heater, while the S model is equipped with a 2.4-kilowatt Harvia Delta heater.
Smaller heaters were chosen for these saunas due to their effective thermal insulation and

triple-pane windows and doors. These solutions contribute to the saunas’ high energy efficiency.
The basic model of the sauna is connected to the electrical grid in the usual manner, but it is also available as the market’s first industrially manufactured option, which includes a solar panel and a battery. This off-thegrid solution allows the sauna to be used in locations where the electrical grid does not reach.
The panels and battery system are supplied as a ready-to-use package with the sauna. With fully charged batteries, the sauna can be used for about 2–3 hours, but in sunny weather, the usage time can extend to 4–5 hours. If the sauna is connected to the electrical grid, the heater remains warm for the desired duration.

Gecko, a leader in spa experience technology, recently announced the launch of Gecko waterlab, a groundbreaking water monitoring and dosing recommendation product that seamlessly integrates under a hot tub or spa.
Gecko’s research, including in-depth interviews and analysis of thousands of surveys, confirmed water sanitation as the top pain point for hot tub owners. Driven by a commitment to consumer-centric innovation, Gecko developed in partnership with General Galactics Systems an innovative technology: Gecko waterlab. The solution continuously monitors water quality, provides real-time insights, and offers dosing recommendations to ensure clear and safe water.
Furthermore, owners will enjoy a complete spa experience with Gecko’s new all-in-
Available in the UK through Dröm UK and Guncast Pools and Wellness, the new and exciting FRIMAS ice steam room from KLAFS is a product that enriches the brand’s range with a gentle form of wellness cooling, whilst offering spa guests a particularly soothing interplay between heat and cold.
The hot phase in a sauna has a relaxing effect, increases blood circulation and stimulates the immune system. Cooling down is then of central importance. The cold causes the blood vessels dilated by the heat to contract quickly. The interplay of heat and cold stimuli thus acts as effective vascular training for the immune and cardiovascular systems.
The FRIMAS ice steam room revitalises the senses, promotes resilience and provides a health-boosting cool-down after the sauna. Various forms of water merge to create a unique wellness concept. The multi-sensory cooling experience with a variety of spectacular design options creates a unique, holistic wellness concept. In addition, the FRIMAS ice steam room can be customised in size and with a wide range of equipment features, such as the HOLLI snow and fog shower or various ice fountains according to the wishes of each client.
Snow, mist and ice bring the body back into a soothing balance and complete a heat therapy session with a refreshing cool down.
A year-round, Arctic experience at temperatures of 0-5°C, unlike short, powerful cold stimuli, where the body is directly exposed to cold water, FRIMAS is a gentler, more circulation-friendly method of cooling. It invites users to linger for up to 10 minutes and cools the body gently and effectively without putting too much strain on it.

one mobile app. Completely redesigned, it features a seamless and intuitive user interface, enabling remote control of spa functions such as temperature adjustment, water sanitation monitoring, and receiving water maintenance recommendations.
Unlike most market solutions that need frequent interventions, Gecko waterlab’s long-lasting probe requires calibration only once in a four-year lifespan – which is the longest in the industry according to the company. The convenient underthe-spa installation and set-and-forget functionality provide a hassle-free user experience. “It was
important to design a solution that won’t trade one maintenance burden for another,’’ said Jérôme Landry, Product Line Manager at Gecko Alliance.
“We are really thrilled to introduce this game-changing product,” added Jean-François Ferland, CEO of Gecko Alliance. “Our goal is to provide the best spa experience in partnership with spa manufacturers. It starts by making spa water sanitation simpler. This new product shows our commitment to innovation and customer intimacy.”
PortaSauna Turns Up The Heat With New Model And Golden Coast Partnership
Introducing Anthropometric Designed Spas From SpaFlo
SpaFlo, one of the UK’s leading luxury stainless steel spas, pools and hydrotherapy pool manufacturers, has created its own approach to anthropometric modelling, leading the way in its hyperpersonalised spa design approach.
Pioneering portable sauna business PortaSauna has secured a major distribution partner as it seeks to expand. Launched at the start of 2024, the Portsmouthbased brand has secured a deal with pool, spa and sauna experts Golden Coast, which has relationships with more than 300 retailers across the country.
The agreement is a major coup for PortaSauna and the deal with Golden Coast will see them initially take the wood-fired HEX portable sauna, PortaSauna’s upgraded base model, which has been designed in the UK for ease of use in any outdoor location. It features a 1.8m x 1.8m x 2.1m sauna tent capable of holding four people. The tent has a waterproof 420D cotton outer fabric, 170gsm cotton insulation, fire retardant 210D cotton and a 430 stainless steel stove. The HEX kit also includes a range of sauna accessories including four PortaSauna sauna hats, fire retardant gloves, thermometer and a cedar bench.
In addition to the agreement,
PortaSauna has doubled its product range with the introduction of a new larger HEX XL sauna tent, which can comfortably cater for six to eight people and there’s the potential for Golden Coast to add this model in the future.
Both models are easy to erect and can reach 90° Celsius within 30 minutes.
Harry Beardsley, PortaSauna Business Development Manager, said: “These are exciting times for PortaSauna with the new partnership with Golden Coast and the launch of the HEX XL.
“We have seen a steady stream of sales and interest in our portable saunas simply through social media, ambassadors and word of mouth. However, I anticipate it is about to take off in the final third of the year as a result of working with Golden Coast, who are one of the foremost experts in the industry.”

Anthropometry is the study of measurements and proportions of the human body. It is essential for hot tub and spa users, to ensure they have the ultimate relaxation experience. SpaFlo founder Richard Gowland has studied the muscles of the human body through anthropometry to better understand and improve jet placement alignment to maximise the massage experience. The result being SpaFlo’s anthropometric modelling ensures each hot tub considers jet placement and seat dimension including both depth and width for the bather, designed in line with their key body measurements and height.
This meticulous attention to detail extends beyond aesthetics. The strategically placed massage jets in SpaFlo’s hot tubs represent an investment in ergonomics, luxury and health. These jets provide the ultimate water massage, which is crucial for muscle recovery, relaxation and improved blood circulation. The personalised placement of the jets ensures that each SpaFlo owner reaps these health benefits to the fullest. The company places a maximum of 24 jets to each pump, therefore guaranteeing great pressure from each jet. This type of jet to pump ratio increases the power, increasing the jet to pump ratio decreases the pressure and therefore the performance of the spa.
Richard Gowland commented: “It was during Covid that I researched anthropometric models and the relative placements of jets. I found it exciting that I could create this personalised concept for clients, leading to further enhanced health benefits. No one else offers this type of heightened personalisation. We work with individuals to ensure that all spas perform to their utmost capabilities and that the enduser experience is maximised.”

All-weather Swimming Pools Meet Today’s
Lifestyle Expectations
Today, people have increasingly high expectations for what makes a place feel like ‘home’. Beyond fulfilling basic needs, residents now look for a range of leisure amenities, and one of the most sought-after is a swimming pool. This amenity appeals to people of all ages, offering a space for relaxation, exercise and social connection. Recognising this shift in resident expectations, Centra Greens Apartments in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, has thoughtfully included swimming facilities as a core amenity. Centra Greens offers two pools: one for adults and one specifically designed for children. To enhance accessibility, these pools have been transformed into all-weather facilities, allowing residents to swim year-round without concern for weather or temperature.
However, maintaining pristine pools involves ongoing effort and care. To ensure the highest standards of cleanliness, safety and comfort, the management team at Centra Greens sought expert advice from Waterco, a leader in pool maintenance solutions. After a thorough consultation, Waterco proposed a comprehensive, cost-effective system designed to manage heating, cleaning and water circulation. This system includes three 44kW Electroheat Plus Heat Pumps to maintain comfortable water temperatures, two Micron Side Mount
SM750 Filters for water purity, and two Supatuf MK2 Pumps to ensure efficient water flow.
Since the installation, the management at Centra Greens has been highly satisfied with the system’s performance. The pools now remain crystal clear, odour-free and consistently heated, providing a seamless swimming experience for residents at any time of day. With this amenity in place, Centra Greens has succeeded in creating a welcoming, resort-like environment that truly embodies the modern expectations of home.

Certikin has access to their full portfolio of products, so whether it be the smallest of spares or largest of filters, contact our Pools or Commercial Teams for your Waterco product requirements.
Vision Filters
Some of the most reliable and popular domestic bobbin wound filters on the market. Using the latest in fibreglass winding technology, they are available in top and side mount versions, the latter of which comes with the patented 10" lid, making servicing quick and easy.
Hydrostar MK4 Commercial Pumps
This Commercial Pump has been designed to provide a substantially quieter operation and higher flow rates than the MK3 version. A new reshaped design has optimised the hydraulic efficiency of the pump. Available in 4.0, 5.5 and 7.0HP.
All models feature a heavy duty IP55 weatherproof motor with a 431 stainless steel shaft as well as an enclosed glass filled Noryl impeller for long lasting reliability.
MultiCyclone 70XL
The Commercial MultiCyclone 70XL contains 70 cyclones, which remove sediment from the water prior to the main filter. This reduces the amount of debris reaching the media filter decreasing the frequency and duration of backwashing - saving you time, money, water and energy.
SMD & SMDD Filters
The effect of deep media bed improves the filtration efficiency over standard high-rate filters by providing enhanced in-depth filtration and increased dirt capacity. In addition, the greater bed depth permits efficient use of mixed bed filter media and water treatment media such as granular activated carbon. The 1000mm bed of the SMD range and 1200m bed of the SMDD range ensure that finer dirt particles and colloidal substances are retained to a far greater level than a filter with a shallower bed depth.
Aquaspeed Pumps
An industry favourite, which is available exclusively from Certikin. As well as a modern look, the latest model has an upgraded motor which is manufactured using the latest technology to provide an efficient and powerful pump.
BINDER BACK UNDER ONE ROOF

INCIDENT AT US BIOLAB FACILITY SPARKS EVACUATIONS
At the end of September, road closures and evacuations were needed in Rockdale County, Georgia following the another incident at a BioLab chemical plant. The Conyers facility caught fire after a malfunctioning sprinkler system made contact with a reactive chemical. At the time, authorities explained that a chemical reaction caused a significant amount of smoke and off-gassing, creating concerns about chemical exposure in the surrounding area. With smoke plume visible for miles, air quality tests confirmed the presence of chlorine.
This latest incident is a frightening reminder of a similar one’s that have occurred at BioLab facilities in recent years, both in the US and further afield. The people of Conyers had already experienced two similar incidents in 2004 and 2020. In addition, in August 2020, a fire at the company’s Lake Charles facility in Westlake, Louisiana, also caused the release of chlorine gas.
Here in the UK, an explosion and fire at Biolab UK’s site in 2006 saw chemicals leak into the River Coln in Gloucestershire, killing about 2,500 fish.
Visit To LPW Pools A Success For All Involved
The Fairlocks Pool Products team are pleased to report another successful visit to Belgium having taken a second group of UK-based pool companies to visit the LPW Pools factory in Aarschot.
The trip started bright and early with a site visit to see an installation of LPW ZK12 pool by local Belgian installers Zwembaden Bollen BVBA. This proved an invaluable insight into the speed that is possible when installing an LPW pool. The Bollen team arrived on site around 5.30am and by 9am the pool was in the ground, plumbed and ready to backfill and commence filling with water!
Following a short coach trip, the factory visit began with an introduction and welcome by LPW Pools’ Managing Director Antoon Boeykens, followed by a presentation on the company’s Flexline pools by Edmund de Fabribeckers. Flexline was added to the range in 2022 and offers a bespoke option for one-piece pools. Manufactured in the factory from polypropylene, they can be supplied up to 20m long and offer countless options, including overflow, skimmer, infinity and a choice of four colours and finishes. A cover pit is included in the pool shell and features the choice of Covrex foam filled slats or a polycarbonate solar option.
control panel options. A tour of the LPW production facility was next to see the various pools being prepared for delivery all over Europe. The LPW range consists of 13 models manufactured from vinylester with integrated cover pit and lifetime warranty.
Antoon then concluded the day, before the group headed off to visit the local Stella Artois brewery site in nearby Leuven, which proved extremely popular and informative! An evening meal rounded off an extremely helpful and enjoyable trip for everyone involved.

NIVEKO Pool Provides Customdesign Luxury For Humans
When a family decided to have a pool built, one of their main motivations was their love for animals. The Standal family own a hotel for cats and dogs which is located right by the family home, and they wanted to create a place where their four-legged guests could also enjoy a place to swim and freshen up, as part of an exclusive offer at the hotel. That meant they needed a pool that would not only meet the highest human standards, but would also be safe and suitable for animals too.
After some thorough market research, they decided on a NIVEKO pool for several fundamental reasons. These were mainly the overflow options, specifically the Overflow Advance, which gives the impression of an almost infinite edge, which was exactly what they were looking for. They were also attracted by the low-chlorine automatic water treatment system.
The owners had a specific idea for the design of their pool and needed a custom solution that would meet their requirements. NIVEKO therefore created a pool with a multi-level bottom and extra depth; measuring 10 x 5 x 1.5-2.5m, it provides ample space for
swimming, and stairs along the pool width offer easy and elegant access.
The pool is part of the NIVEKO Plus concept, which includes embedded stainless steel built-in parts. The stainless steel handrail along the entire length not only enhances the aesthetics of the pool, but also gives an added feeling of safety when in the water.
A special heat exchanger means the pool can be used for longer than the usual season, a huge advantage in the colder climate. With the natural black stone of the overflow Advance, the pool blends perfectly into its surroundings.
Thanks to the cooperation with the dealer, the result is a pool that meets all their needs – both for humans and animals.

Welcome to this autumn edition of SPN and there are so many updates to provide this time.
Following the recent adoption of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy by the BSPF (which BISHTA, SPATA, PIP and SPATEX have all agreed to adopt), these have been shared with SPATA and BISHTA members on the online Members’ Hub. Also on the agenda is the law on preventing sexual harassment, which is changing on 26 October 2024. The new law is the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023. By law, all employers will need to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment of their employees.I am delighted to also confirm that some EDI training was recently undertaken in Andover and there is more information about this session on the following page.
By the time this issue arrives, the annual conference for BISHTA and SPATA members, which has been held annually for many years, will have been held online.
Along with a wide range of internal and external speakers, including colleagues from the Home Office (who provided updates on responsible chemical sales), there was also an update from BISHTA and SPATA member Adtrak. They have also written an article for this issue of SPN highlighting what they have done for fellow member Falcon Pools and what is available for other members. Please see page 30.
Industry Training, Development, Benchmarking, And Much More!
In this latest
issue, BSPF Managing
Director Chris Hayes provides a number of updates on training initiatives and key events that are relevant for both BISHTA and SPATA members, plus the wider wet leisure industry as a whole
The annual conference day also included the AGMs for BISHTA, SPATA and the BSPF.
This issue also allows for a final reminder that the BISHTA and SPATA entries must be submitted by Friday 1 November, so please contact the office if you wish to enter. It is not too late to sponsor some of the Awards, so if you are interested in this option, please contact Jan Hardy. The winners will be announced at the annual Industry Gala Evening at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Tuesday 4 February 2025. Please remember that attendance at the event is open to BISHTA and SPATA members and the whole industry!
Further afield, Lyon will be the venue for hosting the 12th EUSA European Pool and Spa Awards at Piscine Global Europe on Tuesday 19 November. Good luck to all of the UK shortlisted entries, and it is hoped that you will receive news of any winners in the December issue of SPN.
Lyon will also host the 8th WAPSA meeting (the third time the city has hosted it). The WAPSA meeting is a chance to bring Association executives from around the world together to share data and trends. There will also be news from the various subgroups on education, environmental sustainability and management and there is a new marketing subgroup.
As mentioned above, there is a WAPSA education sub-group, and this is very helpful in benchmarking what is going on in other countries. It is information that is also shared

with the ISPE (the body responsible for providing education to individuals who are pool engineers and technicians). The need for Continuing (or Continuous) Professional Development (CPD) is an initiative which SPATA supports the ISPE in offering and promoting right across the industry.
SPATA has worked with a number of supplier members to introduce courses designed to provide installers with more knowledge and to help avoid common problems that can sometimes occur. It is anticipated that a date for a liner course (mainly focusing on bag liners) will be available before the end of this year. Dates for environmental control and ductwork courses will be available from Ron O’Sullivan (AstralPool UK) and David Hayles (Heatstar). Discussions with relevant tutors about a possible Heat Pump course and a Sauna & Steam course before Easter 2025 are ongoing.
BISHTA has been no less busy, with tutors providing water hygiene management courses around the UK. Dangerous Goods courses have also been provided (which is a legal requirement for anyone involved in storing, handling, or transporting chemicals classified as Dangerous Goods, chemicals with a UN number). BISHTA is planning on offering an Electrical Final Connections of Hot Tubs qualification (with an NICEIC tutor) in November (the first two days are online, and the dates are Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 November), with the in-person practical day three being arranged on Thursday 5 December (venue to be confirmed) but other dates may be negotiated, depending on where the candidates are based.
Lastly, Mike Bickers at Nsure has provided a really useful article on Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) Insurance. For more details, please see page 29.
That’s everything from me for now; enjoy the remaining months of this calendar year.
SPATA And BISHTA Champion Equality, Diversity And Inclusion
In this latest issue, we take a closer look at how the collaboration between associations the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA, along with other industry leaders, is promoting an integrated approach to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion and the sharing of best practices to create a successful environment for all
The Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA) and the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA) have demonstrated a solid commitment to advancing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) within the wet leisure sector. To support this goal, they have established a dedicated EDI working group to identify industry challenges and opportunities. The group’s mission is to develop best practices, offer resources and cultivate an inclusive culture fostering innovation and growth, ensuring everyone can contribute and succeed regardless of background.
Raising awareness of EDI principles is essential for creating a more inclusive and respectful workplace environment. By embracing EDI, businesses can attract and retain a diverse talent pool, leading to innovative solutions and enhanced customer relations. Companies prioritising EDI are often viewed more favourably by consumers and partners, thereby improving their reputation and competitive edge. Ultimately, the widespread adoption of EDI principles promises a future where equality and respect drive long-term success and sustainability, fostering a more optimistic outlook for the industry.
In 2023, under the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) leadership, a working group was formed with individuals who are deeply committed to promoting supportive and inclusive workplaces. The dedication of these members, including Amanda Goddard (AstralPool UK), Dash Ganeson, Jon Herbert (Rockingham Pools), Arun Sarna (Hot Tub Suppliers), David Ramsden (CPC), Chris
Hayes (BSPF), and Sallie Leslie-Golding (BSPF), has been instrumental in advancing the industry’s EDI efforts, as a driving force to get initiatives in place, developing plans for the future and as EDI advocates.
In an interview published in the August issue of SPN, BSPF President Dyfed ThompsonSmith outlined his plans to enhance industry education and training, emphasising collaboration and advocacy. His commitment to strengthening the BSPF’s role in shaping national policies affecting the pool and spa industry underscores his focus on promoting diversity and inclusion. He stated, “Diversity and inclusivity are vital aspects of any organisation, and the British Swimming Pool Federation is committed to fostering a more inclusive environment.” By working closely with the EDI working group, the BSPF is implementing policies, communication strategies and training programmes to ensure fair and diverse representation, address barriers to inclusion, and celebrate the diverse backgrounds that contribute to the federation’s strength.
SPATA and BISHTA’s wellestablished membership networks span across industries and are crucial in driving real change. Through these networks, Chris Hayes, Managing
Director of the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA, has collaborated with industry leaders to promote a unified approach to EDI and share best practices. Promoting the training initiative, inviting the leaders to provide feedback and open dialogue, and encouraging sharing tools and resources as cross-industry collaboration to enhance standards and foster innovation. This collaborative effort ensures that the industry remains at the forefront of advancements, delivering unparalleled value to stakeholders and consumers.
The EDI working group has already made significant progress, including developing the BSPF EDI policy, which SPATA and BISHTA have adopted. This policy and additional EDI resources are available to members through their respective Member Hubs. In July 2024, the group launched a pilot EDI training course facilitated by Holistic Coach Refeia Zaman. The course provided practical insights into EDI implementation in the workplace, giving us a glimpse
of the promising future ahead.
Attending the session in Andover were Dyfed ThompsonSmith – BSPF President (AstralPool UK), Jon Herbert – SPATA Chair (Rockingham Pools), David Ramsden (CPC), Luke Griffiths (ISPE), Zac Cheek (STA), Anne Olliver (Certikin), plus members of the BSPF team, Chris Hayes, Jan Hardy, Sallie Leslie-Golding, Claire Maguire and Jenna Patterson. They were joined online by Mark Ramsden – PIP Chair (CPC), Dash Ganeson and Michele Bridle (SPATEX). After receiving the training, there was some very useful feedback on how to further help members understand this important subject.
Building on the success of this pilot, further training sessions will be scheduled. This initiative underscores the industry’s commitment to continuous improvement and inclusivity, and the upcoming sessions are something to look forward to, positioning SPATA, BISHTA and BSPF as leaders in promoting EDI, ultimately enhancing customer relationships and ensuring long-term industry success.
The EDI working group continues to meet quarterly to assess and drive initiatives and discuss topical EDI subjects and new developments.

A Gap Due To A Lack Of GAP!
With many companies across the wet leisure industry heavily reliant on vehicles for their day-to-day operations, here, Michael Bickers, Account Manager at specialist insurance firm Nsure, takes a closer look at the subject of GAP insurance and its reintroduction
It is probably no surprise that a recent Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) review identified shortcomings in how some motor insurers value vehicles that are written off in an accident or are stolen. The surprise maybe that it has taken the FCA (and their predecessor) 20 years to come to the conclusion that some insurers deliberately put forward a lower than fair offer and only increase the offer if a claimant complains. That was the main finding of the review.
Whilst I agree this is hardly a shock, as a broker I would tend to fall back on the old adage that as with most things in life ‘you get what you pay for’, insurance being no exception. My experience over the years is that most mainstream insurers do generally offer fair valuations without being pushed, however even with a fair offer there can be a perception of a vehicle being undervalued.
When a vehicle is written off, most motor policies pay its ‘market value’, but as explained below, this can leave a policyholder out of pocket, often because of the
limitations of the second-hand vehicle market rather than the insurer. Interestingly the FCA review did not report on this aspect.
When their vehicle is written off, claimants often struggle to find the same model of similar age, condition, etc, and the replacement vehicle involves ‘betterment’ (newer or better) but at a greater cost. Another problem is where money has recently been spent on an older vehicle to keep a ‘good runner’ on the road, but the expense retains rather than enhances the market value, which may well be less than that spent. ‘Extras’ such as trackers, signwriting and internal shelving can also be expensive to install on a replacement vehicle but, again, do not necessarily enhance the value. This can be a complication, although most insurers are reasonable and take these features into account.
The other main issue is with leased or financed vehicles, where due to the rapid depreciation of many vehicles, the outstanding finance can regularly be more than the write off market value.
Solutions to these issues are available including ‘Agreed Value’ policies, although these are generally only for classic or specialist vehicles, and many insurers offer a ‘new car replacement’ provision for nearly new cars (normally less than a year old). For leased and financed vehicles, Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) policies provide a ‘top up’ for any difference between an insurer’s write-off value and any outstanding finance, and in recent years, GAP was also available for vehicles owned outright to protect against the extra cost of replacing a vehicle mentioned above.
However, GAP insurance has been widely mis-sold (in the sense of being overpriced when sold by motor dealers and finance
The GAP market is now gradually being reinstated as insurers obtain re-approval from the FCA that their products offer value for customers. However, it has become a specialist market”
companies) and back in 2015, the FCA introduced regulations to clean up the sale of GAP when part of a finance deal. Unfortunately, these regulations haven’t worked, and the FCA temporarily suspended the sale of GAP insurance in February due to concerns as to whether policies offer ‘fair value’. Policies sold through insurance brokers were not initially affected, but a number of insurers were also told to suspend sales with little GAP cover available for a while. The GAP market is now gradually being reinstated as insurers obtain re-approval from the FCA that their products offer value for customers. However, it has become a specialist market, and we now re-direct enquiries to a specialist provider rather than arrange ourselves.
The fact that some insurers have been deliberately undervaluing written-off vehicles cannot be a justification for the need for GAP insurance. However, the timing of the GAP suspension so shortly after the FCA write-off value review was unfortunate, having led to the restriction of what can be a fairly priced valuable insurance product. However, GAP is probably in ‘the last chance saloon’ and faces a permanent ban if there is further mis-selling, ironically leaving a ‘gap’ as to insurance coverage available for the ‘gap’ between write-off values and outstanding finance or betterment costs.
That said, the insurance market will evolve; many years ago, home and business contents insurers got around the indemnity/ market value issue by introducing ‘new for old’ policies to avoid policyholders being out of pocket when having no real alternative but to buy new when replacing damaged items. It is difficult to see the motor insurance market following suit given the availability of secondhand vehicles, but a hybrid version, perhaps ‘a bit newer for old’, could be a possibility, although increased claims costs will obviously have to be reflected in increased premiums. That may not go down so well. Nsure Insurance 01424 229762 www.nsureinsurance.co.uk

Almost Sold Out! SPATEX 2025
Now Prepares To Stand And Deliver
With less than a handful of small stands remaining, and more than three months to go before SPATEX 2025 opens its doors from Tuesday 4 to Thursday 6 February at the Coventry Building Society Arena, the team is busy assembling the show’s content to make the 29th edition a stellar one.
UNPRECEDENTED DEMAND
“We have an excellent and very varied line-up of over one hundred companies, including all the leading international manufacturers and suppliers that you would expect to see at an exhibition of this calibre, plus some very exciting new companies making their SPATEX debut,” said the show’s seasoned Organiser, Michele Bridle, who next year will celebrate her 25th year anniversary of working for SPATEX.
THE WHOLE PACKAGE!
So much more than just an exhibition, SPATEX is widely recognised as providing the best source of free information in the industry and it’s thanks to the tremendous support of a large number of esteemed associations –namely, Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE), Swimming Teachers Association (STA), Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS), Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG), Water Management Society (WMSoc), Legionella Control Association (LCA), Institute of Swimming (IOS) and, of course, the British Swimming Pool Federation’s SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association). Combined, they add gravitas to the show and bring their individual insights and knowledge to create a varied programme of seminars that combines hands-on practical advice with the technical, plus need to know
health and safety guidance and compliance. SPATEX is delighted to be repeating last year’s success story in attracting a new audience to the show by hosting IOS’s Pool Plant Tutor Day plus LCA & WMSoc meetings.
A NEW ADDITION FOR 2025
SPATEX is proud to announce the launch of the Pool Plant Theatre. The Institute of Swimming (IOS), in collaboration with the Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA) and Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) are planning a series of hands-on workshops, speaker panels, and forum, catering for the specific needs of the commercial pool operator. There will be three sessions on Tuesday afternoon and three on Wednesday morning. The programme isn’t yet finalised, but the following has been confirmed: RLSS’s Jo Talbot and Swim England’s Richard Lamburn will give a talk on the Operation and Specific Needs of Pop-Up pools. STA will continue to play an integral part in the seminar programme with a talk on Pool Safe Operating Procedures already confirmed.
THURSDAY IS PWTAG DAY
PWTAG will once again be taking over Arena 2 on Thursday with topics such as:
• Total Alkalinity v. Flocculation by Ian Nicks. Ian has worked in the industry for over 50 years and has developed training programmes and advised professional bodies throughout the UK.

Suction Entrapment And Hair Entanglement
We often see the subject of suction entrapment featured in the news here in the UK and abroad, many times because of tragic circumstances; it is therefore important as pool operators that we keep reminding ourselves of the risks involved, and what we need to do to mitigate them, and what checks we need to have in place.
The facilities include commercial pools, hydrotherapy pools, wading / paddling pools, interactive water features, hot tubs and spa baths. Also, add on features with separate pumping, all have one thing in common – a water circulation system(s). This means that water must leave the pool and then re-enter at another point following filtering and disinfection. This in turn means water under suction from the facility. If not properly managed then this can have serious repercussions on users as we’ve seen, and the two main dangers are:
SUCTION ENTRAPMENT
Suction entrapment occurs when a swimmer is trapped by the suction forces created by the water flowing through the outlet drains at the bottom of the pool or low wall suctions (human skin is unfortunately able to form a perfect seal!). In some cases, swimmers have been trapped underwater until they drowned and in other cases, they have suffered serious injuries to various parts of their bodies including the bowel. The suction produced is very powerful.
HAIR ENTANGLEMENT
When bathers swim too close to bottom drains or suction outlets of incorrect design with uncontrolled water flows, or place their heads underwater in a spa too close to incorrectly fitted, or non-present anti-vortex fittings, these water outlets create a vortex (a circular motion) and long hair can become entangled in the grilles at the outlets. It has also been noted that any fitting with these design defects at a specific outlet fitting can potentially cause this entanglement –main circulating and / or booster pumps.
Examples of potential sources of suction entrapment / hair entanglement
• Incorrect operation
• Incorrect fittings
• Poor design of drain outlets and covers
• Insufficient number of drains
operation of critical valves
• Vortex formed over fittings − anti-vortex fittings not fitted
• All one-line suctions eliminated, and surface water draw-off overflow pipework valves locked open to prevent the creation of one-line suctions for example
• All fittings are made secure so they cannot be removed
• Velocities through outlets not adhering to recommended rates
• Broken grids – a potentially lethal problem.
It is therefore imperative that the pool operator is fully trained and aware of the potential dangers, and continually manages and risk assesses the operation of critical valves, line velocities and fittings, etc.
Refurbishment or alteration of any pool or water-based facility should also always be risk assessed to ensure no additional risks are introduced in relation to suction entrapment and hair entanglement.
It should be noted that facilities with balance tanks for deck-level systems do not normally produce these risks as the water flows by gravity to a tank before direct suction to the pump(s).
WHAT DO THE STANDARDS SAY?
As pool operators, we must ensure that our inlets and outlets comply with BS EN 13451 which requires all swimming pool operators to ensure there are no risks and dangers from inlets and outlets in pools and spas.
STA has created a list of items that should be checked and adhered to, in order to ensure compliance:
• At least two outlets, minimum 2m apart
and at least 3m from side walls
• Speed of water going through the gratings should not exceed 0.5m/second, and correctly sized as per PWTAG guidance
• Inlet and outlet grille and cover apertures should not exceed 8mm
• Outlets are designed so that it is impossible to block them completely.
In addition, STA recommends that inspections should be undertaken routinely by professionally trained personnel (if necessary including with professional divers under HSE Diving Regulations). A visual inspection should be carried out daily to ensure no damage has occurred or grilles have become loose, and a closer inspection should be undertaken monthly. The hair entanglement test can be done in the form of a wig test, as per PWTAG’s Swimming Pool Water publication. Also, there are devices that can be installed to prevent suction entrapment, such as Vac-Alert.
All inspections should be recorded and suitable procedures in place should any damage or missing items be identified.
For further details please refer to the:
• PWTAG Code of Practice Hair Entrapment Test Procedure
• PWTAG Technical Note (TN66) ‘Suction Entrapment in Spa Pools’.
With incidents involving hair entanglement and suction entrapment still happening around the world, in this issue, Robbie Phillips, STA’s Pool Plant Technical Advisor, raises the issue again to warn operators about the dangers of both, with a view to preventing such incidents going forward As

A One-stop Shop For Onepiece Pools
In this issue, we report on our visit to the Kentbased facility of Aqua Technics Pools UK earlier this year, who are in the process of establishing a distribution network across the country that will offer high-quality, Australian produced, one-piece pools to the market. There, we learned more about the new company, the products and what’s different about their offering
From their offices on the outskirts of Ashford in Kent, over the years, Tony Exell and the team at XL Pools have built a reputation for providing outstanding swimming pools to exacting standards for local customers. Part of their successful offering has been the supply of one-piece pools, thanks to the numerous benefits they offer.
During the pandemic, with the sector growing at pace, combined with the need for reliable access to the highest quality products, Tony came to the conclusion that direct supply from a leading manufacturer would be a necessary step for the business going forward.
The search for an ideal one-piece pool lead Tony to Australia, home of the swimming pool, and a country that boasts more domestic pools per-capita than any other in the world. The company that caught his eye – Aqua Technics Pools, home of Australia’s largest purpose-built pool production facility – a company who have been manufacturing award-winning one-piece composite pools for almost 50 years. With the founding family still at the helm today, in that time they have sold and installed 70,000 pools worldwide and have been at the forefront of the market.
Impressed with the company, its business philosophy, and the quality of products on offer, Tony moved quickly to secure the supply of one-piece options for XL Pools. However, having successfully worked with the company for just a couple of years, it became apparent that there was a bigger business
opportunity on offer, one that could serve the UK market as a whole.
After a lot of planning, earlier this year, Aqua Technics Pools UK was launched at the SPATEX trade show in Coventry, with industry stalwart Dorian Davies having been recruited as Dealer Network Manager for the new business.
As Dorian kindly explained to us, these one-piece composite pools are renowned for their unparalleled quality, high-tech construction materials, unique selling features exclusive inclusion of Graphene Nano-Tech reinforcement and a 200mm Edge Beam, coupled with the selection of superior materials and a patented PoolColourGuard surface finish protection – all combine to give customers a finished product which requires less maintenance and expensive refurbishment during a pool’s lifetime. The Graphene Nano-Tech used is also an incredibly good insulator against heat loss through the pool walls and floor, so it will cost less to maintain temperature than other modes of construction.
These features ensure Aqua Technics pools are engineered as some of best in the world. But, there’s a bigger picture which Dorian was keen to show us.
Having left the offices and jumped in the car, we went on a short drive to the brand’s distribution centre. There, Tony Exell joined us and the pair explained more about the company, its values and the products whilst showing us around the facility.
We can confirm that the claim that ‘plentiful stocks of the most popular models
...these one-piece composite pools are renowned for their unparalleled quality, hightech construction materials, unique selling features and exceptional design”
in the most requested colours are held in stock’ is true, with around 100 pools being held on site and available for dealers. This level of stock ensures very rapid delivery and installation times for UK and Irish companies can be achieved – a huge selling point for the brand.
The company’s commitment to customer satisfaction doesn’t stop at just stocking these exceptional pools either. Having entered into a large warehouse, we were able to see where the pools are fitted out in customer options and then tested before being shipped out. Aqua Technic’s prefabricated plant rooms are also assembled here using equipment from well-known, high quality, efficient, reliable industry brands such as AquaSpeed, Waterco Lacron, Polytropic and Electair. Using these brands ensures spares and on-going service items are readily available from stock in the UK. The plant rooms are then comprehensively tested in a controlled environment before being shipped out on the same purpose built truck as the pool.
From here, it was on to an installed pool at a client’s property to see a working pool in the flesh – one of a number of working pools that the company has access to which, when required, not only assists in the sales process, but also means the company can utilise them for training days for prospective dealers.
With the day concluded, it’s been an impressive introduction to a company that seems to have thought about quite literally everything – one that has both high-quality products on offer and big plans going forward too.

A True ‘Partnership’ Approach To The UK Pool Dehumidification And Environmental Control Market
For this issue, we spoke to Ron O’Sullivan, Business Development Manager at AstralPool UK, about the unique and long-standing relationship that the company has with Heatstar, a market leader in the design and manufacture of environmental control systems for swimming pools
As part of the Fluidra Group, the AstralPool brand is familiar to many within the wet leisure industry, and particularly those operating within the commercial sector. As a company, AstralPool UK can and do tick many boxes and are able to supply everything from a complete commercial pool solution down to the smallest of accessories and the company is well known for supplying a wide range of products from several highly recognised brands including their own manufactured goods.
More than just a distributor of products, the team at AstralPool UK go further though and are also very much hands on with a number of projects and work very closely with the manufacturers of some of many of the products that they supply.
A good example of this is with Heatstar, the manufacturer of modern and highly energy efficient environmental control systems for swimming pools and more. Heatstar itself has been operating for over 40 years and for more than half of that time, the company has had a close working relationship with AstralPool UK.
With Heatstar based on the Isle of Wight and AstralPool UK located in Fareham, the two organisations are both partners and neighbours, but with such a long-standing and successful partnership, clearly there had to be much more to the relationship than pure convenience.
So, in this issue, we spoke to Ron O’Sullivan, Heatstar Business Development Manager at AstralPool UK, to find out more about the relationship and how it works.
FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOURSELVES AND HEATSTAR?
From our base in Fareham, AstralPool provides sales and distribution services to complement the market-leading brand,
Heatstar who are based over on the Isle of Wight. It’s a long-standing and successful partnership of over 20 years.
AND HOW DOES THIS DIFFER TO SOME OF THE OTHER PRODUCT SECTORS THAT YOU SUPPLY?
In my role as the key Heatstar Business Development Manager, I am a conduit between the pool trade customer and the manufacturer. The main services provided include site surveys, troubleshooting, product development, training and specification support. By having this dedicated resource, we ensure that there is a true ‘partnership’ approach to the UK pool dehumidification and environmental control market. It’s a ‘win win’ all round – for us, for Heatstar and most importantly, for our customers.
SO, IT’S VERY MUCH A HANDS ON APPROACH WHEN DEALING WITH THE CUSTOMERS WANTING HEATSTAR PRODUCTS?
Absolutely. AstralPool provides a pivotal service to the trade in terms of logistical support and arranging onward delivery within timesensitive and challenging build conditions. We also provide a dedicated third-party transport company that delivers Heatstar units in a safe, controlled, and timely manner, adjusting where the constraints of site conditions and demands are needed. Customers often comment that the carrier supplied by us provided a highclass and personal service which is significant added value.
WHAT MAKES THE HEATSTAR AND THIS PARTNERSHIP DIFFERENT?
Heatstar have been at the forefront of energy efficiency for over 40 years and have invested in research and development to take advantage of energy saving advances in

A further advantage for pools with Heatstar environmental controls is that every unit Heatstar manufacture is tailored to the precise individual requirements of the application, obviating the need to under or oversize performance aspects or tolerate inappropriate equipment room layout, as can be the case with ‘off the shelf’ products. This means that the client will not be overspending on energy costs because the unit they have been sold has been meticulously specified.
No two pools are the same. Each application has its own characteristics therefore making it difficult to describe an ‘average’ swimming pool. However, it is possible for Heatstar and AstralPool to work together to take every detail of the pool project and estimate the anticipated energy usage over a given time. At the specification stage, Heatstar can provide projections for consumption of energy, fuel and even carbon emissions. This information helps pool installers get tantalisingly closer to the perfect energy efficient pool. These principles apply to both commercial and residential applications.
LASTLY, COMMUNICATING WITH THE UK TRADE, HOW DOES THAT WORK BETWEEN THE TWO COMPANIES?
There’s coordination of marketing and promotional activities between Heatstar as the manufacturer, and ourselves as the distributor, to ensure that the Heatstar brand continues to be the market leader in the niche sector of swimming pool dehumidification and environmental control.

Offering The Ultimate Hot Tub Experiences
Providing a product and setting that offers users the ultimate experience for relaxation, recuperation and more, the premium end of the hot tub market is a somewhat niche, yet lucrative part of the sector, and therefore key for manufacturers and retailers. Featuring models retailing over the £10,000 mark, high-end hot tubs boast the sector’s latest innovations and technology. This issue, we look at the brands and models competing at the luxury end of the market
For manufacturers and retailers, the top end of any market sector is always a challenging battleground, and in the world of high-end hot tubs, competition to secure sales of these premiumpriced products has been tough again this year, although if we’re being brutally honest, that has been the case across the whole sector.
Despite their niche status, or rather perhaps due to it, products that fall into the high-end category provide manufacturers with the opportunity to fully showcase each brand’s design capabilities, imagination, quality and more to the most affluent of customers. So regardless of their sales volumes, with a brand’s credibility on the line and with budgets often well into five-figure territory for a number of these models, they need to catch both an end user’s imagine and perform flawlessly too.
On the customers side, anyone looking to invest in a product costing over £10,000 quite rightly demands the latest features and innovations combined with a sense of style and exclusivity. They also expect that their premium investment will be enjoyed with the minimum amount of effort and for many years to come.
With brands and distributors looking to stay one-step ahead of the competition, they have been quick to offer something different
to affluent UK customers. The result is some truly impressive designs and models which are packed with all the latest bells and whistles to satisfy the needs of these higher spending clients.
With premium being the name of the game, we take a look at just some of the competing models and brands in the sector.

These new spas also offer the option of a surround sound system with a subwoofer and internal speakers, providing an immersive auditory experience.
Finishing off, models come with a Prime Tex Cover in dark grey, that not only adds a touch of sophistication and elegance to the spa, but also offers greater sun protection and a soft texture to the touch.

THE JACUZZI® J-LX® COLLECTION FEATURING INFRARED AND RED LIGHT THERAPY
After using the infrared therapy in sauna applications for some time and seeing the benefits customers were achieving, the Jacuzzi® team decided to do additional research to develop infrared light therapy into a hot tub application.
The Jacuzzi® team worked with a PhD at the Cleveland Clinic to develop a research white paper on this specific technology and its benefits. The team then began working with an experienced development partner to identify the exact wavelength output requirements for the near IR (NIR) and the Red Light therapy in the underwater application.
The J-LX® Collection was developed to give
users the most rejuvenating and regenerating hydrotherapy experience available. That feeling is designed to last long after the hot tub session has finished.
Both hot tub models in the J-LX® Collection feature the FX-IR Seat, which performs the Jacuzzi® brand’s most advanced hydrotherapy. The FX-IR Seat combines full-back and neck hydromassage with near Infrared and deep Red Light therapy to target deep tissue within the lumbar region of the lower back. The J-LX® hot tub offers an open seating configuration for six or more bathers while the J-LXL can accommodate five to six bathers and also features a lounge seat.
The J-LX® Collection was the first to feature IR and Red Light therapy in an underwater application. However, both retailers and endusers have benefitted from the introduction of these features this year into models within the J-400™ Collection, plus Jacuzzi® PowerPro™ and PowerActive™ swim spa models too.
FOR HIGH-END FAMILY OPTIONS, SCP’S HOT TUB BRANDS DELIVER

A ‘GREEN’ APPROACH AND MODERN LOOKS –THE WELLIS LIFE RANGE
New designs, new solutions, and a new insulation system were just some of the groundbreaking and game changing features of Wellis’ updated hot tubs that were launched last year. With 61 patents and lots of unique innovations, Wellis were particularly pleased with
the new product line’s energy efficiency credentials. Thanks to the extremely favourable energy usage, daily consumption was reduced greatly to 2.9 kW (from a daily consumption of around 5 kW) in the case of a 5-person model.
For three years prior to their launch, designers had been working to create the most eco-friendly Wellis spa collection ever. At the time of their launch, according to the brand, they were the greenest spas in the world, since they achieved more efficient test results during use than the existing bestconsumption hot tubs on the market.
Wellis paid special attention to energyefficient solutions, and during production, they have prioritised sustainability and environmentally conscious production technologies. Accordingly, the Wellis range was given the name ‘Life’ and their wellknown high-end models, including the Everest, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and more, have Life models produced in two versions –
Premium and Deluxe.
In addition to innovative technological solutions, a lot of emphasis on the smallest details of the various design elements has been applied too. Wellis Life product lines bring a unique massage experience to the homes of customers worldwide as flagships of innovation and energy efficiency.
As a result of the company’s further unique innovative developments, and by using half as many hydromassage motors, Wellis say their Life models produce a much stronger performance and the massage experience is even more relaxing than found on previous models.

spas, swim spas and pools. With their in-house drawing office, they are able to collaborate with architects and designers and can even work with a sketch from the client to produce precise drawings and renders which help the end user to visualise the finished project.
GMT strongly recommend the use of joint point tiles as the whole surface area of the tile is in contact with the adhesive giving the ideal bond. In the past, issues with mesh backed tiles have led to the company now testing them for suitability before use and advising clients about possible issues, but the ultimate decision to use them or not is made by the client.
Another benefit of a tiled spa is the longevity, at GMT they produce a fibreglass shell using marine grade resins and gelcoats, all of which are insulated and sitting on a stainless-steel cradle with adjustable swivel feet giving a sturdy base on which to tile.
Of huge benefit is the ability to have a large spa or pool made in sections which are then joined and tiled by their factory workmen on site giving the appearance of a one-piece pool, this is of particular benefit when the site has restricted access or indeed if the pool is too big to be transported in one piece.
GMT’s ethos remains constant – to supply a superior quality product and service to their ever-growing list of customers both in the UK and abroad. They are proud to be members

Providing The Power For A Continuous Swimming Experience
When it comes to increasing the overall functionality of swimming pool spaces, especially within smaller pools, counter-current systems are perhaps one of the most effective add-ons for both new and existing installations. The technology has been a driving force behind the success of swim spas and an increasing number of pools are now incorporating them. Affordable and easy to install, in this issue, we take a look at the brands that are providing the power behind these systems
By Jon Wadeson
There’s various reasons why a larger swimming pool isn’t always a possibility or even a necessity. Perhaps space is an issue or a budget doesn’t allow for something bigger. Maybe there are aesthetic reasons why a large pool just won’t work. Whatever the reason, sometimes a small pool is the only viable option, but whilst fun, they can frequently lack that certain something –and often, it’s the ability to satisfy users with a complete and uninterrupted swimming experience.
The answer to this issue for many pools and their owners is a counter-current system and they’re incorporation into and use within pools, particularly those of a smaller nature, is becoming more widespread. That’s no real surprise given they are a product which enhances the usability of smaller pools whilst at the same time adding some much-needed wow factor too. With a counter-current in situ, smaller pools are put much more on a par with their larger format rivals, and in certain ways, you could even argue that they surpass them.
Of course, their use isn’t restricted to just pools of a smaller nature, but that is clearly where they’re best deployed and really come into their own.
Regardless of pool size, once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible for a user to swim for as long as they want, plus their introduction can often provide some additional hydrotherapy options too.
With built-in and over-the-wall options available, there are no excuses for not exercising in any pool or maximising the area’s full potential – especially as there is now more choice than ever within the sector.
So, with their popularity clearly on an upward trajectory, here, we take a closer look at some of the options and brands that are currently available.
EVASTREAM MOVE – THE FIRST BATTERY-OPERATED PLUG-ANDPLAY COUNTER-CURRENT
from
EVA has established itself as one of the market leaders in high-quality counter-current systems, driven by a dedication to quality and innovation in partnership with Golden Coast, part of Pollet Pool Group.
The EVAstream Move is the first batteryoperated, plug-and-play counter-current swimming machine, designed to transform existing pools into continuous swimming spaces. Its compact and portable design enables year-round swimming without the need for expensive renovations. This innovative device mimics the experience of a competition pool, allowing users to swim freely at home or on the go.
Unlike built-in models, the EVAstream Move is fully battery-powered and requires no technical modifications, making it incredibly user-friendly for any pool owner. It is ready for immediate use and can be operated by a single person. Powered by a rechargeable battery, it offers one to four hours of
uninterrupted swimming, depending on the speed setting, and fully recharges in just four hours via a standard 230-volt outlet.
Ideal for pools as small as 4 x 2.5 metres, the EVAstream Move generates a powerful current of up to 250m³ per hour. Its adjustable current caters to both beginners and experienced swimmers, ensuring a personalised swimming experience.
Users can control the EVAstream Move from within the pool using a water-resistant remote or through the EVA app, which features customisable swimming programmes for tailored training sessions.
Let potential customers experience the EVAstream Move first-hand and request a demo unit from Golden Coast.
CERTIKIN INVITE OWNERS TO ENJOY LIFE IN THE FASTLANE
Whether training to be an Olympic swimmer or simply swimming for the joy of it, Certikin have counter-current options to suit all levels of swimming needs.
The Fastlane Pro from Endless Pools sits at the top end of the Certikin range and is a product which effectively turns a swimming pool into a health club. Athletes love the adjustable speed swim current and, for those in training mode, it is also possible to add Fit@Home which lets the customer control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device, meaning that you can programme and repeat advanced, multispeed ‘interval’ workouts. What sets this counter-current apart is that the turbulence-free water stream is wider than the swimmer’s body and deeper than any swim stroke, yet it is narrow enough not to impinge on other swimmers. Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane generates a wide block of crystal clear, bubble-free and completely adjustable water flow, delivering a fast, smooth swim current up to a 1:14/100m pace (a necessity
Available
Golden Coast, the EVAstream Move is the first batteryoperated, portable, plug-and-play counter-current swimming machine
for any serious swimmer).
It’s suitable for almost any pool – free form or rectangular: gunite, vinyl or fibreglass; new construction or retrofit. The required minimum water depth is 0.9m. It’s particularly suitable for small swimming pools as it lets users swim for as long as they like without turning.
Certikin also supplies its own branded entry-level counter-current system – an affordable option designed for small private pools. It is equipped with a 3hp pump to create an adjustable counter-stream of water. The directional inlet allows a 15° inclination in any direction and also features an adjustable air/water mixer for a relaxing bubble massage effect.
NO MATTER THE REQUIREMENT, UWE HAS A SOLUTION
German manufacturer UWE invented the counter-current system in 1967 and their creation has revolutionised the traditional swimming pool. By regulating the current, even small pools can become really exciting –and that goes for trained athletes as well.
With a wide portfolio of counter-current systems, there’s a solution for a wide range of swimming needs and abilities. Sitting at the top of the company’s range is the TriVA counter-current system.
It was designed with ambitious athletes in mind and thanks to its innovative FLAT technology, TriVA creates a flat, powerful flow just below the water’s surface – right at chest and shoulder height, right where an athlete needs resistance. Depending on the version, the pressure-sensitive single-button PIEZO control offers three power settings: from 75 m3/h to 225 m3/h. To ensure an optimal flow channel, the WAVE safety filter inlet cover (included) should be installed directly
opposite from TriVA.
Complementing the high-end TriVA, this year has also seen the introduction of the first UWE turbine counter-current system, the Fluxus.
Developed at the company’s German home, the Fluxus has already been on test to ensure the reliability you would expect from the brand.
Available in two models with a 350m3/h output through a single nozzle (for good swimmers) or 450m3/h through twin nozzles (for trained swimmers) Fluxus offers fantastic performance coupled with high-end aesthetics
For customers wanting high performance for minimum outlay, popular choices are the EUROJET and DUNA compact systems. Featuring PVC ball valves, PVC pipes, and the control panel – all the components are preassembled and it takes minimum effort to install, but provides maximum pleasure.
Even pool owners who do not have the
option of retrofitting a counter-current system don’t have to be deprived of their pleasure thanks to the TREVI and TREVI LUX surfacemounted systems! Just fit them on the edge of the pool and plunge into fun.
PUMP UP THE FLOW WITH PLASTICA’S COUNTER-CURRENT OPTIONS
Plastica’s SwimMaster™ counter-current unit has been specifically chosen to complement their range of premium wooden pools, however it is not restricted to just them and is suitable for most conventional pool structures too. Its sleek, minimalist design means it can be situated perfectly into wooden pools but Plastica can also supply stainless steel extensions to allow simple installation into concrete structures. Coupled to a Nadorself 3hp jet pump, this unit is capable of flowing at up to 60m3/h.
With a counter-current in situ, smaller pools are put much more on a par with their larger format rivals, and in certain ways, you could even argue that they surpass them”
The X-Stream Duo counter-current unit, made with a stainless-steel niche and grab rail, is Plastica’s new through-the-wall unit. It’s easy to install, gives a neater finish and is more powerful than its over-the-wall alternative. Featuring directional nozzles for fine adjustment of the flow, it comes with two of the Espa Wiper pumps and gives an impressive 100m3/h output.
Each X-Stream Duo kit option comes with a complete plumbing kit and counter-current controller. The duo unit has a sequential start system, so the pumps have a start delay between them and it uses pneumatic on/off switches, accessible from the pool to keep any electrics away from the bather.
Perfect for a small size pool where space is limited, Plastica also sell the Counter-current Jet with white LED Light Kit which is ideal for fitness training, underwater massage and endless no-lap swimming. It features a single jet system with one pump and its face plate is fitted with a white LED light, along with the On/Off light switch for ease of access while in the water.
Lastly, if an over-the-wall unit is needed, there’s the BADU® Jet Perla or Riva units which can be easily installed, and once primed can produce 40m3/h and 54m3/h flow rates
For those in training mode, Fit@Home lets customers control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device
Plastica offer a number of counter-current options, and if an over-the-wall unit is needed, there’s the BADU® Jet Perla

FROM SMALL POOLS TO WATERPARKS – BINDER AND OCEA HAVE A SOLUTION
Ocea UK are one of the UK leaders in the counter-current sector, with ranges suitable for all budgets, whether for family fun, recreational or professional swimming as well as the commercial sector. They have successfully represented Binder HydroStar and EasyStar on the UK market for over a decade and 2024 has brought exciting new product features to the range too. Designed for new build pools, HydroStar is a flush, integrated housing option that encases the market’s only maintenance free turbine to deliver a strong, even current for all swimming abilities. Users can operate the HydroStar using the new BOB optical illuminated in-pool switch – its LED lights allow the swimmer to see what level they are swimming at and it can be used in conjunction with the dedicated Training App, where bespoke training programmes can be created.
With Ocea UK’s latest addition to their Ocea-X range – the InverJet retrofit system –counter-current ownership is more obtainable than ever. Operating using Inverter technology and running on a low 12V, this discreet retrofit option is a cost-effective solution for pool owners. With easy installation over the edge of the pool, the InverJet can be installed to existing installations without any disturbance to the pool shell. Operated by remote or digital control pad, users can set the current to suit their own needs.
Lastly, Binder have recently introduced an exciting option for waterparks and recreational facilities with the new Lazy River HydroStar PRO. Create and continuously operate a river experience with the highpowered turbines that are totally maintenance free. This differs from other systems, where different water attractions share the pump and therefore the individual attractions can only operate one after the other. In addition, one of the biggest advantages of the system

is the significantly lower energy requirement.
ENJOY INVERTER TECHNOLOGY WITH LIGHTHOUSE’S VELOCITY UNIT
The Velocity SwimJet system is the awardwinning, powerful counter-current jet produced by UK manufacturer Lighthouse at their headquarters in Plymouth, Devon. After many years of research and development, it was designed to be as energy efficient as possible whilst creating the most powerful natural-feeling resistance swim experience for the serious swimmers and aquatic athletes.
Patented in 2022 for its use of clever inverter technology, it only draws the power it needs at any given speed cutting down on its energy consumption and therefore running costs. It is the only British made countercurrent system on the market and this badge of quality and authenticity meant that shortly after its initial product launch, the global supplier Horner Express decided to add it to their portfolio, thereby expanding the product into the international market.
Velocity is the next generation in pool counter-current systems, powered by a hydraulically driven propeller capable of moving over 100m3 of water per minute and enabling even the sportiest of swimmers a full sprint workout. The Velocity can reach speeds of 58s/100m but its variable swim drive means users can tailor their swim to a specific workout and ability. As if by magic, Velocity only requires a standard 20 amp single phase electrical power supply to power the 4kW 5hp motor.
Velocity can be retrofitted to an existing pool or has the option of being hidden away behind a bespoke panel system – an increasingly popular and discrete method of installing the jet, so that a main swimming area remains clear of obstructions. The unit is available in anthracite or light grey options.

Attractive And Effective Pool Enclosure Options
There’s only one way to ensure uninterrupted outdoor pool use in the UK – and that’s to cover them up! For both commercial and domestic pools around the country, enclosures provide year-round swimming, will improve safety, plus they’ll reduce both maintenance and running costs too. There’s no doubt that having one is an investment, but an enclosure means owners can maximise their pool’s potential. From the big to the small and to suit just about any pool, we take a look at some of the available options
By Jon Wadeson
An outdoor pool is an investment, more often than not a substantial one, so not being able to use it year-round means its full potential isn’t being realised. And that’s where a pool enclosure comes in. Opting for an effective outdoor pool cover-up means that swimming and pool-based leisure time can not only continue way past the normal seasonal shut down, but it can often continue throughout the worst of the weather too.
What’s more, after the initial enclosure investment, pool owners in both the residential and commercial sectors can also look forward to achieving some decent cost savings – or at least minimise the effects of already high and potentially escalating energy and other running costs.
That’s not the end of the benefits though. Pool enclosures provide a number of additional safety benefits – a big selling point for many – by making it almost impossible for children or pets to access the pool area unattended.
Slips and falls can also be reduced by
keeping the surrounding area free from debris, rain and even snow or ice, plus the glazing in many enclosures protects swimmers from harmful UV rays when the sun is making an appearance.
As with the pool, an enclosure is clearly an investment, but with so many benefits on offer for pool owners through their installation, it’s easy to see why they are a popular choice for outdoor installations both big and small.
There is a fantastic selection of fabulous enclosures that come in a wide range of shapes and sizes to suit a variety of needs, the majority of sites and the most particular of customers too. So in this issue, we take a look at some of the enclosure solutions that are available to enhance the outdoor pool experience.
AQUATELESCOPIC’S PREMIUM ENCLOSURES NOW AVALABLE IN THE UK
Founded in 1987, Aquatelescopic, based near Toulouse, southern France, has been
offering its unique designs and attracting customers from Europe and right across the globe for almost 40 years. Its premium quality, luxury enclosures are manufactured using toughened safety glass, a type of glazing which gives unmatched levels of transparency that does not fade over time, as well as unparalleled strength and shatter resistance.
Aquatelescopic’s most renowned design feature is perhaps its lack of deck mounted rails or tracks, achieved by the incredibly highly engineered bearings and wheels in contact with the pool surround, coupled with its patented guiding mechanism which ensures that each section of the building glides effortlessly into the next with no deflection. Not only does this make for a far more aesthetically pleasing installation, particularly when the building is opened up, but also presents less of a trip hazard, or hindrance to wheelchair users. Buildings can be either manually opened and closed, or, automatically at the press of a button by way of integrated solar powered motors.
The company’s in-house R&D department, equipped with state-of-the-art engineering facilities, designs its own aluminium profiles used in the construction of their buildings’ frames, which give optimum strength and resistance to twisting and deflection. The aluminium used is extremely high grade and also sourced in the south of France, meaning the quality can be controlled and guaranteed. This allows the fabrication of buildings with incredibly high strength-to-weight ratios which can be made in spans up to an incredible 26m wide, making Aquatelescopic the perfect choice for the commercial sector as well as domestic owners.
In-house developed software provides copious drawings with every quote, along with calculations for each building’s resistance to high winds and snow-loadings.
Now available throughout the UK from the XL Pools stable, trade enquiries for Aquatelescopic pool enclosures are invited and welcomed.

CERTIKIN ENCLOSURES – SOME OF THE BEST A POOL CAN GET!
Certikin offers a large range of enclosures, suitable for any pool size or shape, most environments and all budgets.
Their entry-level enclosures are supplied flat-packed and ready to build. These enclosures come in three different sizes with a choice of two glazing options. Everything is
supplied in a box together with an assembly manual making them a fast and cost-effective way to fit a high-quality pool enclosure. With a uniquely low profile and solid design, the AQ Box enclosure is perfect for those looking for a simple yet durable solution.
The Certikin range also includes the Aquacomet Charisma – a high level, wide span telescopic pool enclosure, which was introduced just last year and which has received a warm reception. With external widths of 4 to 7m and a height range from 2.2 to 2.5m (depending on the pool width), the versatile Charisma offers three, four, five and six bay enclosure options.
Featuring 4mm solid, transparent polycarbonate glazing, it comes with UV resistance on both sides of the glazing and carries a three year manufacturer’s warranty. The Charisma features guide rails on both sides and a manual positioning system.
The most popular model in the range is the Endless Summer enclosure. It is fixed along its length, which allows the windows and wall sections to slide up into the roof, leaving the sides open – a key advantage over traditional enclosure models. The rigid and durable structure offers elegant and graceful aesthetics while still retaining key safety and protective features. Each enclosure comes equipped with a double wall polycarbonate
roof, while the side doors and wall endings of the pool enclosure are constructed from solid, transparent polycarbonate panels.
For those who desire the least intrusive pool enclosure possible, the Horizontal enclosure combines an ultra-low telescopic design with durable construction. It’s perfect for spaces where height may be an issue without compromising on strength and flexibility.
ALUKOV OFFER A WIDE RANGE FOR ALL ENVIRONMENTS
Alukov is very proud to present the UK market with the widest range of enclosures from one manufacturer – from ultra-low, medium, high, free standing, lean-to and spa domes – all enclosures are fully bespoke and can satisfy any need.
Alukov are known as innovators within the sector and are constantly developing their products. Following the trend for popular ultra low enclosures, one of the newest models released earlier this year with the PARADE.
Available in two versions – the PARADE and PARADE LOW – these new enclosures feature a combination of sharp and rounded design while maintaining the usual quality and workmanship of the Alukov brand.

competitively priced, low and ultra low pool enclosures that offer a number of benefits. By choosing one, owners will get not only protection for their pool, but also a design piece that will complete any back garden space.
These modern pool enclosures boast a super low and comfortably sloping rail on only one side of the pool. The conveniently positioned rail allows barrier-free access to the pool from three sides. They feature hail resistant, Polycarbonate sheets with UV protection along with a safety locking system, plus models offer a quick and easy installation.
For pools that need an enclosure to be closed when in use, Alukov’s UNIVERSE NEO offers more space than the PARADE options and is a truly universal choice, especially for pools within the domestic sector. This cover offers the compromise between low and high enclosure. It features a rounded shape which gives a higher central line positioned over the middle of the pool. The wider the enclosure, the higher the centre of the building is. If owners opt for a wider model, a table, chairs or sun loungers can be placed under this enclosure.

A Global Event, Not To Be Missed
Arguably the world’s most important exhibition for the entire wet leisure sector, Piscine Global returns to Lyon this November and it expects to attract both visitors and exhibitors from around the world. When it comes to trade shows, this event is a true ‘must-attend’ for many within the industry and this issue, we take a closer look at what visitors can expect to find at the biennial show
By Jon Wadeson
Piscine Global Europe, the leading global event in the pool and wellness sector, will be back in Lyon from 19 to 22 November this year and will provide an opportunity for sector professionals to gather, exchange views and boost their businesses.
Organised by the GreenTech+ division of the GL events group, and run in partnership with FPP (Federation of pool and spa professionals), it attracts key industry stakeholders, experts and innovators from around the world to explore the latest trends and products and the most advanced technologies. Piscine Global is determined to promote sustainable development and support initiatives to improve the swimming pool and health spa industry.
Recognised as an international leader for new products and innovations in the swimming pool and health spa sector, Piscine Global would like to be an effective tool that serves the industry, with leaders and representatives in the sector, from both Europe and worldwide, showcasing a range of unparalleled products and services that are on offer.
The exhibition will also examine in detail the key issues facing the swimming pool and health spa industry: water management, energy consumption, innovation, etc., issues that concern both domestic, and more than ever public swimming pools too.
A wide range of exhibitors, new technologies, a unique visitor experience backed by enriched, high-quality content with new features... Piscine Global is more determined than ever to meet the challenges of the fast-changing wet leisure sector.
WHAT’S ON OFFER AT THE SHOW
With 40 years of expertise under their belt, Piscine Global offers a complete range of products and services to cover the entire world of swimming pools and health spas in a single location: wellness, outdoor living, private domestic pools, community and public pools are all covered.
In addition to being at the heart of the
market’s current developments and new challenges, the show is also an opportunity to discover the latest innovations and new products, particularly in water management (leak detection, rainwater and swimming pool water recovery and treatment, etc.) and renewable energy (solar sensors, photovoltaic panels, etc.).
It is a unique opportunity to meet the stakeholders who contribute to making the sector so rich and to feel the energy of a rapidly evolving sector.
MAJOR CHALLENGES ADDRESSED AT THE SHOW
As a leader in the sector, Piscine Global charts a path for the industry and its stakeholders, enthusiastically embracing innovation as the driver of transformation to a more sustainable future. Consequently, the show will examine in detail the key issues facing the swimming pool and health spa industry:
• Water Management – While water is essential, it is not inexhaustible. If droughts in recent years are anything to go by, the industry should think about
alternative solutions, incorporate new practices and change habits, for example, at the conferences organised in the Pool Arena during the four days of the show.
• Sustainable Development And Energy Consumption – From the optimisation of water and energy consumption and waste management, to the overseeing of pool renovation and maintenance challenges, sustainable development is at the heart of today’s concerns and challenges. Swimming nals understand this and are working to reduce the environmental impact of private and public swimming pools, whether through technology or new approaches and practices.
Throughout the show, the conferences, innovations and new products presented by exhibitors will be an opportunity to ask questions and better understand environmental and climate issues.
• Employment And Training – The swimming pool and wellness industry is facing major challenges in recruitment for a wide range of roles and in upgrading the skills of their professionals in areas such as home automation, digital technology,
Recognised as an international leader for new products and innovations in the swimming pool and health spa sector, Piscine Global would like to be an effective tool that serves the industry”
sustainable development and new sales techniques. Initiatives are being developed to meet these needs, and Piscine Global has established their position as a place where professionals can find answers and exchange ideas, particularly through the Pool Campus.
• Renovation – The rehabilitation of swimming pools that are sometimes over 30 years old is a major economic and environmental issue, which means that professionals in the sector as well as architects and local authorities must adapt their approach and integrate certain constraints.
With their offer of the widest range of products on the market, Piscine Global will be able to meet the needs of stakeholders in the sector by showcasing a host of innovative, environmentally friendly solutions proposed by professionals: digitisation, energy and environmental performance, equipment and activities that are complementary to swimming, etc.
• Digitisation – Automation, home automation, communication, etc. There are numerous challenges related to digitisation for professionals in the sector. For reasons of modernity, safety and comfort, as well as to control energy consumption, there is a growing demand for increasingly connected swimming pools. Which skills should be integrated? Which technologies should be used? What advice should be given to clients? There are many digitisation-related issues that will be discussed at the show.
THE PROGRAMME 2024

This year, international conferences will be organised by the FPP and WAPSA, the world organisation that federates national associations within the pool and spa sectors. They will focus on training and sustainable development and take stock of the global economic market.
• The Pool Campus – This space, co-organised with the FPP, will accommodate meetings with specialist organisations that work in the fields of training and employment. At the Pool Campus, all the information required to find a training course will be available, with the possibility to interact with the organisations present or find out about the professions in the swimming pool sector.

ORIGIN AQUA SHOWCASE THEIR MINERAL+BIOME® FILTRATION SYSTEM
UK-based Origin Aqua will return to
SHOW PREVIEW PISCINE GLOBAL, LYON, FRANCE
Lyon having launched their chemical free, Mineral+Biome® filtration at the 2022 event.
This modular, automated pool filtration system, which uses 50% less energy and generates 50% less wastewater than traditional filtration systems, can be fitted to virtually any new build or existing swimming pool, and according to the company, renders the use of chlorine or other disinfection chemicals obsolete.
Origin Aqua spent three years developing the Mineral+Biome®, which, in addition to operating without chemicals or aquatic plants, includes innovative features such as IoT touchscreen automation, air assisted auto-backwash, flow/pressure sensing and a modular fully recyclable one-piece filter housing.
Notably, in June 2022, Origin Aqua published ground-breaking scientific research in Nature Magazine (the world’s leading multidisciplinary science journal), which unequivocally proves its filter technology destroys common pathogens found in pools, such as e-coli, Pseudomas and Enterococci via the process of ‘biological predation’ and key nutrient starvation.
While the product is initially aimed at the top 20% of swimming pool consumers, the payback on its technology can be as low as five years for indoor pools and seven years for outdoor pools.

It’s All About Commitment
“A short while ago I became married to my beautiful and amazing wife. It was probably the act of making this lifetime commitment that started me thinking perhaps commitment is one of the most important things not just in our lives, but in business as well,” says Adam Clark, General Manager at Golden Coast
I DO
It might seem a bit much to compare the solemnity of the marriage vows to a new business plan but I think one of the things that makes a commitment so powerful is that it is taken very seriously. It’s more than a promise or a pledge. It’s more personal than a guarantee and more positive than an obligation.
You might be making a commitment to your customers to provide the best possible products, or build the most amazing pool or provide a maintenance service that gives them the best possible bathing experience whenever they want to. The point is, it’s a personal promise and it’s important to you as well as to them.
Commitment is powerful stuff and tends to generate positive outcomes.
BUT IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE
‘He’s not really the commitment type’. We all know at least one person that can be said about; probably quite a few more than one.
Making a long-term commitment is something that can make some people uncomfortable. We all have a friend who probably isn’t going to get married. We’ve all worked with a business that promises great things but simply doesn’t deliver.
Commitment is a serious thing. The fact that it isn’t always easy is surely a part of what makes it so empowering and attractive. It can make you trust that company that wants to do business with you. It can make you say yes when someone proposes and begin a lifetime commitment.
And time is important.
PERSEVERANCE AND COMMITMENT
As you might know, I’m a dedicated Crossfitter and as such I’m certainly committed to the gym and this shows up one of the key aspects of commitment.
If you are committed to something, you stick to it.
For instance, I could go down to the gym and do a full-on work out for an hour or more. I could lift heavy and with perfect form. I could work so hard that I was getting a cardio benefit just from lifting weights. And that one session would hardly do me the slightest bit of good.
Why? Because commitment often has a time element to it.
Whatever the behaviour is that you have committed yourself to, it quite frequently needs repetition. If you take that gym workout and you repeated it three times a week for six months than you are going to see some serious gains and a major improvement in your fitness. So commitment often means sticking to a behaviour or belief over a period of time. If you commit to something in your business life, you often have to give it time before you see results.
When you work in an environment where people share such a strong sense of commitment, it helps you focus on what is important and it helps you judge whether you are doing the right things or not”
THE BUSINESS OF COMMITMENT
Businesses make commitments too, but a business essentially consists of the people who work in it and so the very human, very personal side of the concept of commitment is here as well.
I have spent my whole career making a commitment to customer service and since I have been General Manager at Golden Coast, I have seen that commitment reflected in everyone who works there.
When you work in an environment where people share such a strong sense of commitment, it helps you focus on what is important and it helps you judge whether you are doing the right things or not. I like to think we usually are.
And commitment gets you somewhere. It helps you get where you want your business to go. As they say, ‘Unless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes… but no plans’.
HONOUR YOUR COMMITMENTS
A friend of mine once said ‘a principle isn’t a principle until it costs you something’ and the same might be said about commitments. They are where you set your standards and they are where you will be judged.
You probably shouldn’t have too many. You certainly shouldn’t have too few.
Commitments are a sign of maturity both in the individual and in the business organisation. Make them carefully because you want them to last a good long time. Make them something that you can be proud of and make them something that will give you pleasure for years to come.
Reciting my marriage vows definitely felt like a serious moment and one that would have an impact on me for the rest of my life. It also felt happy and joyful and like something that I would want to celebrate for the rest of my life.
So far most of my commitments have worked out well. I hope the same is true for you. Just remember, commitment is an act, not just a word.
