SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.

The period between late January and the start of spring is always a busy one for many within the UK wet leisure industry and at SPATEX and following it, there was a lot of optimism around for the season ahead. It was after all a new year and new decade and with the direction if not the details of Brexit becoming clearer, a new future lay ahead too. In fact the constant talk of the UK’s departure from the EU was conspicuous by its absence at SPATEX but talk of something else was just starting, albeit in a rather low-key way. That something was of course the Coronavirus outbreak and at the time, it seemed like a Chinese problem and not something that applied to us here in Britain. Several weeks later and reflecting back to the conversations in Coventry, how wrong we all were – it’s nothing short of mind-blowing how quickly and how far events have moved on. Right now, many people and businesses don’t know which way to turn. With many employers furloughing staff and with lockdowns in place, life has been almost put on hold. I have no doubt that it will mean a lot of changes and perhaps some may be for the better going forward. But for now, it’s a case of a day at a time, at most planning week by week, but normality will resume. It may be slightly different and it may take a while but it will and when it does, perhaps more emphasis will be placed on the things that really matter in life – and that includes health and wellbeing – so our industry could find itself at the forefront of any recovery. Having touched on the subject of SPATEX, SPN were pleased to be among well over 100 companies who exhibited at the annual threeday event which again saw a superb effort all

round from both the organisers and exhibitors. That resulted in increased attendance figures plus a professional looking show that featured plenty of innovative products and we’ve a review of it later in this edition.

Also held during SPATEX were the annual British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by BISHTA and SPATA – an evening which celebrates some of the best swimming pool, hot tub and swim spa projects from across our industry – and we’ve coverage on all the Gold Award winners from this year’s event along with a write-up on the Gala Evening itself. As a Judge, I would just like to say congratulations to all who entered and everyone who picked up an Award during the evening. Inside, we also explore what’s new in the onepiece and fibreglass swimming pools market, a sector that’s enjoying continued success due to taking the hassle out of installations for both pool builders and owners alike. Still on the subject of convenience, we’ve an in depth look at the latest automatic pool cover systems for the domestic sector too. Pool liners and systems – perfect for both new build and refurbishment projects – are also featured in this edition and if that wasn’t enough to keep you going over what are sure to be some rather thumb twiddling weeks, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams reflects on the current situation we all find ourselves in. The STA’s Luke Griffiths looks at the importance of fit for purpose for pool plant operators plus we’ve pieces covering SCP’s Showcase Academy held in February, coverage of events tied to Bosta UK’s Norsup brand and a case study from Waterco highlighting their commercial filtration solutions for a Premier League football team. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, eco, people and wellness news from both here in the UK and abroad too. So that’s this slimmer than anticipated issue pretty much covered, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy it and of course, stay safe during these exceptional and uncertain times.

Historic Gem Opens Doors To Reveal Stunning New Lifestyle Venue Newcastle’s iconic City Baths has opened its doors to the public to reveal the fully restored pool and stunning new fitness and wellbeing facilities – six years after its closure to the public. Fusion Lifestyle, the charity behind the £7.5m redevelopment, saved the venue after it was closed in 2013 and has worked with Napper Architects and specialist contractor Createability to breathe new life into the neglected Grade II listed building – a process which has taken more than three years to complete. Anthony Cawley, Director of Operations at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “The baths have been enjoyed by generations of locals since they opened in 1928 and are a cultural icon to the residents of the city. When we spotted the campaign to save the building, we were keen to take on the project and help ensure that its precious history was retained. “Due to the age of the building and the specialist works needed, the renovations have taken longer than originally anticipated, however we wanted to make sure the restoration was done to the highest of standards. “We’ve worked closely with the local authority’s conservation officer to ensure that we have kept works true to the original building design, while also incorporating

modern touches to ensure that it meets the demands of today’s customers. “It has taken a lot of hard work and effort, but we have completely fallen in love with The City Baths and are incredibly proud to be cementing its future for generations to come. As well as sensitively restoring the historic pool, the new space combines modern facilities – including a fully equipped gym, sauna and state-of-the-art fitness studios. The Turkish baths and a luxury spa are also

set to open on-site shortly after and will offer a range of treatments.

Wet Leisure Industry Survey Results Released Golden Coast has revealed the results of its ninth annual Wet Leisure Industry Survey. The annual initiative is completed anonymously by respondents working in the industry all around the UK, and is supported by many organisations including BSPF, BISHTA, ISPE and of course SPN. “The aim of the Wet Leisure Survey is to gather facts and statistics about our industry, which are then made publicly available for anyone to read,” said Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast prior to the Coronaviris outbreak. Sales in the wet leisure sector can be dependent on weather, and in a year that saw record high temperatures as well as extreme rainfall, last year, the industry appeared to be steady. When asked about business conditions for 2019, 46% of respondents said things were good, and almost 12% said they had an extremely good year. Weather remained a dominant influence on business, cited by 55% of respondents but Brexit rose as a major factor, with 30% saying it had

impacted them, compared to just 8% in 2018. Based on the survey responses, products continued to sell and 2019 was a bumper year. Spa sales almost doubled, and swim spa sales quadrupled, compared to figures from 2018. Sauna sales remained fairly static, but interest in steam rooms increased, potentially due to greater focus on health and wellness. The Wet Leisure Industry Survey is launched in the autumn every year, to reflect on sales and predict future areas of growth. With the Coronaviris epidemic taking place at the time of writing, this may well change but should it go ahead, any results will make for interesting reading in what is sure to be a challenging year for many businesses. Visit wetleisure.com to access and download the full survey results for 2019. Conducted by

Wates Appointed As Main Contractor For Sandwell Aquatics Centre

Wates Construction has been confirmed as the main contractor to build the new Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick. The state-of-the-art facility will create a lasting legacy for community health and wellbeing with its 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool as well as a 25m diving pool, community pool and seats for up to 1,000 spectators. Wates has also made a commitment to local spend and job creation, including supporting its supply chain in taking on apprentices and helping them transfer into permanent positions upon completion. The company will also engage with local schools to deliver work experience placements on site, encouraging diverse demographics into an industry combating growing skills shortages. John Carlin, Regional Managing Director for Wates Construction Midlands, said it was an honour to be part of this exciting regeneration story: “Here in the West Midlands we’re currently experiencing a tremendous renaissance in our local infrastructure. This project – and the wider regeneration of the

borough of Sandwell – will create a lasting legacy for local residents and put Sandwell on the map for its world-class facility. Ground breaking took place in September 2019 to prepare the site for construction and the initial building work on the £73m project is set to complete in spring 2022 with final handover to Sandwell Council in May 2023 when the building will be open to the public. Councillor Maria Crompton, cabinet member for Sandwell Council with the responsibility for leisure added: “We’re excited that the main building work on this landmark leisure centre has started. The aquatics centre will give us an internationalstandard venue for the local community, replacing ageing leisure facilities with a modern hub designed to promote health and wellbeing across the district.”

£5.9m Refurb At Ivybridge Sees Much Anticipated Pool Open A brand-new 25m, 6 lane heated pool with a state-of-theart retractable roof opened at Ivybridge Leisure Centre at the start of February – prior to the Coronavirus shutdown. The pool, outside paved area, new wet side changing rooms and poolside sauna and steam rooms complete the build at the much-loved local facility. The centre had already seen a top-of-the-range gym, purpose-built exercise studio, café and other new facilities open to the public. Operated by Fusion Lifestyle, one of the UK’s leading sports and leisure charities, the newly completed centre is set to put Ivybridge on the leisure and fitness map with the pool expected to attract visitors from across Devon and beyond,

particularly in the warmer months when the roof will glide back to deliver an open-air swimming experience. Peter King, Business Manager at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “The redevelopment of Ivybridge Leisure Centre has been part of a multi-million-pound investment we have carried out across six Devon leisure centres. The changes at Ivybridge are by far the most extensive and we are really exciting to unveil them. We work with lidos and pools

across the UK but this is our first with a retractable roof so we hope visitors and members at the centre will really enjoy the flexible fitness and fun that this will bring.” Cllr Jonathan Hawkins, South Hams District Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, added: “We’ve been working closely with Fusion throughout the build and can’t wait to officially open the doors to the new swimming pool at Ivybridge Leisure Centre. Making sure the community has fantastic leisure facilities on its doorstep and promoting health and wellbeing is a key part of our role and we believe the newly refurbished centre will deliver this for many years to come.”

NEWS COUNCIL REJECTS PLANS FOR BICESTER WATER PARK RESORT Cherwell District Council (CDC) has unanimously rejected the plans to build a multi-millionpound water park resort near Bicester. After months of campaigning against the plan, local residents were relieved that permission was refused. Plans for the attraction, which would be the first in Europe to be operated by Great Wolf Resorts, included an indoor waterpark, hotel, conference centre, adventure park, restaurants and a nature trail. But the proposals received lots of criticism from residents and councilors who cited a lack of public transport to the site and congestion worries as reasons for opposing the project. The company is in ongoing talks with both the council and CDC and if the plans do eventually go ahead, Great Wolf will have to contribute to providing public transport to the site.

EVERYONE ACTIVE AWARDED LEISURE CONTRACT FOR EAST HERTS Everyone Active has been awarded a leisure contract with East Herts Council for a further 15 years. The new agreement means that Everyone Active will continue to manage Grange Paddocks Leisure Centre, Hartham Leisure Centre and Ward Freman Pool. For the next five years it will also operate Leventhorpe Pool & Gym and Fanshawe Pool & Gym. The council is also investing £33m to improve the facilities at Grange Paddocks, Hartham and Ward Freman. These projects aim to support the Council’s vision for leisure across East Herts by providing attractive facilities available to the whole community and contributing fully to the health and wellbeing objectives of the Council. Everyone Active is currently the second largest leisure operator in the country, managing 198 sites in partnership with 61 local authorities.

With Multiple Stands, Certikin Headlined At SPATEX 2020 Befitting its status within the UK industry, Certikin International went big at SPATEX 2020 – water leisure’s annual exhibition held at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena at the end of January. “With such a large portfolio, it’s always hard to know which products should make the cut but this year we had more stand space than ever before which made the job slightly easier,” said Marketing Manager, Chris Green. The NIVEKO one-piece pool, Roldeck and Coverstar automatic covers, CertiDos and Calorex divisions all had their own stands and visitor footfall was reported as ‘excellent’ across the board on all three days of the show. SPATEX 2020’s Go Green theme meant there was a heavy emphasis on eco-friendly, energy saving products throughout the exhibition hall. The Calorex stand, manned by Certikin’s H&V specialists, received lots of enquiries from visitors on how

the carbon conscious, market leading units can dramatically reduce pool running costs. Chris added: “Certikin regards SPATEX as one of the most important dates in the calendar. It’s a great opportunity to fly the flag, both for ourselves and the industry. Besides showcasing our new products, it’s a great networking opportunity and it was good to meet many of our customers and put names to faces as well as take many new exciting leads back to the office for follow-up. The Ricoh Arena, once again, proved itself to be an excellent venue, with smooth build-up and breakdown, culminating in a rewarding and worthwhile event. We look forward to returning in 2021 and celebrating SPATEX’s 25th anniversary bumper edition – Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 February.” Certikin International 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

Construction To Begin At Moorways Derby City Council has contracted local construction firm Bowmer + Kirkland to build Derby’s new 50m pool and water park to create Moorways Sports Village. Forty two million pounds has already been approved to deliver the project and the construction. When built the facilities will include a 50m pool, water park, learner pool and soft play alongside a comprehensive health and fitness offer. Speaking prior to the Coronavirus outbreak, Councillor Robin Wood, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “The main construction contract has been signed. A lot of work is set to take place on the site and we can look forward to Derby’s new pool and water park being

built over the next two years.” Steve Chambers, Bowmer + Kirkland Regional Director, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this contract to build Moorways Sports Village. After forging an excellent relationship with the council during our construction of Derby Arena, we are looking forward to working with them for the construction of this exciting new addition to the leisure facilities in the city.” The water park will have plenty of thrills with two,

four storey flumes along with England’s first wave generating wow ball and wave rider slide. More fun can be had with the dual racer slides and a beach water playground area with mini slides and water jets for families. Innovative technology will be used to provide a flexible swimming space. The 50m pool can be transformed into three separate pools in a matter of minutes providing opportunities to put on different activities at the same time. A separate learner pool will provide an excellent environment for swimmers of all ages to have lessons. Visitors will also be able to relax in the sauna and steam rooms, after a swim or workout in the modern gym and studios.

Cranbourne Stone Helps To Create A Stylish Safety-first Pool

Stoneworld Enjoy ‘Outstanding’ Success At Industry Awards At the 2020 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards – held during the SPATEX trade show – Stoneworld products and services were prominently used in projects that won what are viewed as some of the most prestigious awards. The company’s stone featured extensively in the project by Tanby Pools that won the award for ‘Outstanding Outdoor Pool of the Year’. Stoneworld’s extensive involvement throughout this landscaping project featured beautiful Moleanos White Limestone pool copings created in their masonry workshop. These bespoke made pool copings included an elegant, super-wide Roman end that juts out dramatically over the escarpment of the garden. Precision digital templating and water jet cutting ensured a perfect result, plus doublesided edge finishing created an extremely high spec finish whereby no unfinished edges were viewable from any point in the garden. The completed landscape makes a beautiful feature of the steeply sloping site, where Stoneworld

paving, steps and copings have been used throughout. Bespoke cutting and finishing in their masonry workshop on every part of this garden has elevated this project and they are very proud of their involvement here. Furthermore, the project by Rigo Spa, that won the ‘Outstanding Indoor Pool of the Year’ award, had extensive involvement from Stoneworld. Stone consulting services and precision cutting services were supplied on the project. To achieve the sublime curves along one side of the pool, Stoneworld stone consulting services designed a solution enabling the chosen porcelain tiles to be used, digitally templated the required curves and then precision cut the porcelain tiles for installation by Rigo’s team. To be involved with both projects is an extraordinary result, of which Stoneworld are justifiably proud and each can be seen later in this edition. Stoneworld 01844 279274 www.stoneworld.co.uk

Cranbourne Stone teamed up recently with Carl Vernon Swimming Pools to renovate a new conservatory pool for the Four Season Hotel in Hampshire. Combining their knowledge and using some of the most innovative products on the market resulted in the completion of a pool which did not sacrifice style for safety. “The pool was in need of refurbishment,” said Donna Wells of Carl Vernon Swimming Pools. “Tiles had blown around the pool coping and the hotel had to keep patching them up. The blown tiles not only created an outdated appearance but also posed a safety concern.” Carl Vernon Swimming Pools was appointed to overhaul the pool and use the team’s magic to design and renovate a superior pool which both exuded style and had safety features at its heart. “Cranbourne Stone understands the importance of design and therefore selected stylish, slip resistant porcelain solutions. Just because you’re considering safety, it doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style!” added Donna. “From our comprehensive portfolio of products, Four Seasons chose a cream stone affect porcelain tile and black porcelain double edged bespoke copings which works wonderfully to bring out the splendour of the historic building. Importantly their choice also addressed the challenge of finding stone which not only looks good but includes non-slip properties,” said Jo Stanfield of Cranbourne Stone. The project was completed promptly within a three-month timeframe at the end of 2019. Cranbourne Stone utilised its bespoke service and specialist machinery to get over a number of hurdles during the build including cutting coping stone to a specific radius to perfectly fit the curved pool edge. Carl Vernon used its considerable skill to ensure complete accuracy during the renovation which resulted in a seamless result. Cranbourne Stone 01264 810813 www.cranbournestone.co.uk

Kent Council Award Design And Build Contract To Ustigate Swanley Park in Kent is a popular destination which offers thousands of annual visitors numerous attractions. Last year, the local council reviewed the condition of the Park’s outdoor paddling pool and splash zone and discovered surface cracks in the pool tank and filtration equipment that would need replacing ahead of the next season. Due to the inclusive popularity of the water-based activities and an increase in visitor footfall, Swanley Town Council took the decision to embark upon a procurement process to invest in the enhancement and longevity of the facilities. Ustigate, a local award winning company also based in Kent, that has specialised in the design and build of water features and aquatic

play facilities since 1966, were delighted to have been awarded the contract. Having installed over 100 aquatic play facilities in the UK, the company are especially pleased and proud to be installing their best in play in a place that many of their friends, family and workforce call home. A Tribute To Aqua-Blue Founder Ronald Stempfer The industry has lost another personality following the announcement that Ronald Stempfer, FISPE, founder of Aqua-Blue Designs has passed away. Having been within the industry for 58 years, Ron had only announced his retirement as recently as mid 2018. Ron started his career in the industry back in 1960 when he joined United Filters & Engineering Limited (UFEL) as an Engineering Draughtsman designing filtration schemes for local authority swimming pools. Leaving UFEL he joined Gazelle Swimming Pool in Kingston-uponThames as a Pool Designer & Engineering Manager. In 1970 he joined Nor-Cal Engineering as Sales Manager and there he was on the design team for the first UK designed GRP filter, by Lacron, which is still a brand leader. As Nor-Cal’s Sales Manager, he travelled the country and made many lasting friends. Ron left Nor-Cal in 1976 to launch his own design company, Aqua-Blue Designs as architectural designers for swimming pools, spas and specialist pool buildings. Many successful projects were completed in over 20 countries and some notable awards were collected on the way from our trade association SPATA. Ron was a very active member of SPATA and made a massive contribution to updating the SPATA standards in 1999. He was an early and active member of The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) in 1980 and went on to become a Fellow in 1989 for his contributions to the industry and the Institute. In December 1999, Aqua-Blue Designs was joined by Michael Cormacey, MISPE and Ron eventually sold his equity in the company to Michael. Ron was also a founder member of JLP Ltd, now National Leisure, and throughout his career, made his mark across the industry. He will be sadly missed by many friends and former colleagues.

Awards For Serco’s Lifesaving Lifeguard Team Staff at the Serco Leisure-managed AquaSplash centre in Jersey have been awarded by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) for their dramatic rescue of a swimmer in trouble. Henry Horton, Samuel Jackson and Peter Hodgson will be awarded RLSS UK’s ‘Certificates of Meritorious Action’, with Dilly Percival receiving the ‘Certificate of Recognition’. It was an ordinary Wednesday in November for lifeguards Henry and Samuel, with the regular customers enjoying their swim session in the pool, until Samuel noticed a gentleman in distress in the water. Wasting no time, he raised the alarm headed straight over to the gentleman to help get him out of the water, assisted by Henry, Peter and Dilly who raced to the scene to help and reassure other

swimmers, until the paramedics arrived. Thanks to the training and quick reactions of the team, it was quickly identified that the swimmer was suffering a cardiac episode, so Henry performed rescue breaths and chest compressions, until the defibrillator could be applied. The Chief Paramedic, who attended the scene, was quick to praise the team for

their actions and professionalism, which undoubtedly saved the man’s life. The centre was also visited soon after the incident by the Director of the Health & Safety Inspectorate, who further commended the team for their lifesaving work. Serco Leisure’s Managing Director, Simon Bailey added: “The awards for Henry, Samuel, Dilly and Peter are well deserved. By working together and utilising the expert training they had received, they have changed the course of a man’s life. As a company, we’re extremely proud to have people like them working for us.” RLSS UK 0300 323 0096 www.rlss.org.uk

Wooden Diving Boards That Are A Work Of Art The story of Mikel Tube starts the same as those of many others – an obsessive idea becoming a product – and that product is wooden diving boards. Belgium-based Mikel is the sole remaining full time wooden diving board designer and builder in the world. With customers all around the globe, his business continually needs to reinvent its products to give ultimate satisfaction. Based on demand of their motor yacht clientele, Mikel’s company have now developed the registered ‘Tension’ technique. This new approach consists of a total of nine beams that are kept together with five to six diagonal bars made out of 316 marine stainless steel. The rubber between the beams allows the wood to work freely and also add extra grip when diving. This concept makes new design possible and the Derover 1 is the flagship of the brand and is joined by the Marine 1 which successfully passed the different quality and test checks. Mikel is confident that both models will enter the product range no later than May 2020, just in time for the summer season. Mikel has introduced the Marine 1 and Derover 1 as the first of a series of models based on the ‘tension’ concept and they join the legendary Revelation 1 and Tom Sawyer models which are based on the ‘floating’ techniques. Completing the company’s Marine 1 line-up is the Diving Bench – a new concept that offers the combination of sitting, lying and diving from the same structure at the deep end of a pool. A New Floor Concept That Will Totally Floor You! Now for something totally new. Think of a cross between Lego and mosaic tiling and you will begin to understand the genius that is Versoflor – a revolutionary new flooring product that was unveiled at SPATEX 2020 in January. Creative and imaginative, the Versoflor modular flooring system offers unparalleled versatility for indoor and outdoor floors and even walls or ceilings. Designed and manufactured in the UK, the product allows the customer to explore their own creativity using a unique push-in mosaic system. No two floors will ever be the same! Made up of a series of base tiles, measuring 300mm x 300mm x14mm, the simple yet unique design allows each component to be locked together quickly and neatly. Each tile holds 196 coloured inserts. That’s where the creativity comes in as an unlimited colour palette of RAL colours means that any design and any logo can be created. Anti-slip and comfortable to walk on barefoot, Versoflor is made from a specially developed material called polytrobe, which is UV, water and chemical resistant and incorporates antimicrobials to combat bacteria. The base tiles can be trimmed and connected to other tiles. The product is both aesthetically pleasing, versatile and highly functional. For instance, with Certikin’s optional LED lighting system, connected to the underside of the base tile, mood lighting can be introduced and walk ways highlighted. And that’s not all – coming in summer 2020 – under floor heating can be accommodated too. The Versoflor design provides natural drainage when laid over other floors and can be used as an integrated final flooring system to enhance pool or spa areas. Ideal for use in changing rooms, with or without the mosaic inserts, the product also delivers the highest slip resistance available in comparative products. A Next-generation Pump Motor Could Be Just Around The Corner ePropelled are designers and manufacturers of next-generation, cutting-edge electric motors and associated control electronics and their truly revolutionary and ground-breaking products could well be changing the way a number of products function in the not too distant future. That’s a big claim, but to put this into some kind of perspective, just take a look at the accompanying image. Motor A is a conventional 0.5 horsepower electric motor. There are literally tens of millions of motors of this type used in hundreds of applications all over the world, especially within the swimming pool and hot tub sectors. It is bulky, heavy, and (relatively) inefficient, but the technology has served its purpose for decades.

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 17_SPN_April_29_Prod+Eco_News.indd 17

Motor B is an electric motor manufactured by ePropelled, which is 1hp (i.e. twice the power output of motor A). It is a fraction of the size, a fraction of the weight, has full variable speed capability, the same motor can be used in different countries (i.e. voltage and phase specific versions do not have to be made for specific territories)

and consumes less electricity for the same output. The potential for these products attached to pumps replacing existing units already in-field is enormous, but the potential is even greater when you consider the rush to electrify the planet and find ever more efficient and environmentally-friendly solutions. ePropelled are currently in discussions with a number of high profile corporations within the industry with regards to getting the motors installed on their pumps so they may be seen on products sooner rather than later. ePropelled 029 2115 6075 www.epropelled.com

The New Calorex Inverter Heat Pump Just Got Even Better! Such is the confidence in Certikin’s new Calorex I-PAC and V-PAC Inverter heat pump range, unveiled at SPATEX 2020 to great acclaim, the domestic pool water heating pumps designed specifically for the UK climate have recently been awarded a 5-year on-site warranty. Replacing the ProPac range, these stylish looking heat pumps come in a side and top outlet with the I-PAC (‘X’) and V-PAC air temperature range from -5°C to 43°C and the I-PAC + (‘Y’) range down to -10°C. They feature an increased range of power ratings from 8-25 kW. Inverter heat pump technology allows for efficient control of the pool temperature with the I-PAC/V-PAC only using the energy required. High efficiency with modulating step-less inverter compressor gives an average COP of 10.3 (I-PAC+), 9.7 (I-PAC) and 10.7 (V-PAC), which is twice as efficient as the older on/off models. Complying with the new European F-Gas regulations, the heat pumps use the low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant R32. It requires less refrigerant volume per kW and is easier to recycle. The heat pumps are of a compact size with a small footprint and compliant with permitted development rights. The I-PAC is made from aluminium alloy and the V-PAC from ABS. The I-PAC side outlet models have Wi-Fi capability for remote control. Currently this is only available for Android devices with the app for Apple devices being available shortly. They can also be set to two modes, ‘boost’ for quick start-up and ‘whisper’ for super quiet day to day running. Other bonus features include 9-11 dB(A) sound reduction compared to an on/off heat pump, with ‘whisper mode’. Certikin International (H&V) 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS NEWS

Superior Spa Dealers Get All Fired Up! Walking on hot coals was the order of the day at the Superior Spas annual dealer seminar. The event was held in the wonderful surroundings of Ringwood Hall Hotel & Spa in Chesterfield, where representatives from 29 dealers gathered from all over the UK for a fun packed day of talks and activities. Rob Carlin, Managing Director of Superior Spas started the event by welcoming everyone to what was their biggest seminar to date. After introducing several new dealers to the growing Superior family, Rob was delighted to deliver exciting news in the form of new swim spas models, new spa models, new components and new insulation, all of which are to be introduced in the coming months. He was also able to give an update on the new headquarters which is currently under construction, and the fact that it will have an additional 8,000 sq ft, taking the full facility to a sizable 28,000sq ft of warehousing, offices and showroom. Later on in the day, a double decker bus took all the attendees for a look at the new impressive site and the container park housed within it. With several of Superior’s brands being powered by Gecko, Rob had great pleasure in introducing Maarten Varenkamp of Gecko Alliance, who gave an in-depth presentation on Gecko products and an update on new products arriving during 2020. Maarten was followed by a very informative talk by Creative Marketing, who’s representatives offered the audience great advice and tips on promoting their businesses across all medias. Further talks were held by staff from Vendigo Finance on enhancing additional sales through a variety of finance options whilst Superior Spas’, Graham Message, who spoke about the importance of visual merchandising and the power of displaying accessories, proved to be the forerunner to the scheduled afternoon activity – fire walking! The memorable afternoon was filled with fun group exercises tailored around ‘mind over matter’ and ‘positivity’, where dealers worked together in some fantastic activities that filled the whole room with lots of laughter and loud applause. The reasoning

20 April 2020 SPN 20_SPN_April_20_Wellness.indd 20

behind this was to condition everyone there to walking over coals which was conducted by the very impressive Morpheus from Creative Team Events. Graham from Superior Spas said: “The whole room was buzzing from some of the activities where everyone let go of their inhibitions and joined in. To say the whole event was enjoyable was an understatement and then to see the dealers walking over hot coals was fantastic, so many smiles, even from people that don’t normally smile!” Later on, the awards evening had an ‘at the Oscars’ theme and the dealers were joined by all of Superior Spas’ staff for a lovely three course meal, followed by the presentation of awards. The evening was further enhanced by a Magician and a room featuring a Casino

and Arcade Games, including basketball hoops and air hockey to name just a few. Gareth Ward, Sales Director of Superior Spas who said: “After the fun environment that we had created during the day, it was important to continue the fun and laughter into the evening and I feel we achieved this, everyone was having a great time.” With the 80s disco continuing until midnight the day came to an end with a filled dance floor and some special moves coming from many guests. Rob Carlin, Managing Director of Superior Spas said: “This has been a fantastic day where we were able to thank our dealer network for their continued support and success. It was also a pleasure to welcome our own staff to be part of the evening, where they were able to mix with the dealer network. “This has been our biggest dealer event and we pulled out all the stops to create a balance between business and fun, not sure how we top it but be assured we will next year for sure.” Superior Spas 01246 559071 www.superiorspas.co.uk

HygroMatik Brings Relaxation To Center Parcs

In addition to adventurous family getaways, Center Parcs’ Longleat Forest site also provides a relaxing experience with its thermal cabins, supplied by spa company Aqua Sana. When guests go for spa treatments, they’re looking to be pampered in a luxurious environment where they can forget about the stresses of daily life. So when Aqua Sana tasked the refurbishment of the thermal cabins to spa design and installation specialists Anapos, the company knew it would have to use the best quality products to deliver this. To this end they turned to HygroMatik, a leading steam solution manufacturer. One of the central attractions of saunas and steam rooms is the humidity, which can be excellent for guests’ health and wellbeing. However humidity levels need to be balanced to provide these benefits, so precision is vital. HeaterSlim, a steam generator from HygroMatik, was specified for its mineral-free and hygienic steam, perfect for wellbeing and health. Its compact dimensions meant it could be installed within the thermal cabins, without infringing upon the calming aesthetic. WaterLine softening systems were also installed. By reducing its lime content, WaterLine keeps the water soft, reducing the need for regular maintenance and cleaning. Martin Wood of Anapos commented: “Saunas and other thermal spa facilities are a luxury industry, and as such customers expect a high level of service. That’s why we use HygroMatik on every project, and wouldn’t use anything else. This was a big, six-phase project at one of the largest and best thermal cabin experiences in the UK. Given the quantity we were specifying, it was important we chose a reliable product that would fit the job.”

Today, the Tubmarine is now available to purchase for £15,450.00 (inc. VAT) and comes with a 25-year guarantee. The Tubmarine is made from 80% recycled, high-specification parts and materials, and directly responds to the growing need for eco-friendly home and outdoor products. Kebony was the only wood selected to clad the Tubmarine, which is manufactured in the UK. Other properties include: • Corrosion resistant • 100% fully recyclable • Hygienic • Made from sustainable fast-growing softwoods • No additional wood treatment required. Selecting materials which were sustainable, strong and maintenance-free in equal measure was essential to ensuring the vision for the ultimate wood-fired hot tub was realised. In addition to Kebony’s environmental credentials, the wood was a perfect choice for the Tubmarine due to its outdoor lifetime guarantee of over 30 years. Developed in Norway, Kebony’s revolutionary technology is an environmentally friendly and patented process which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol – an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability and hardness making it the ideal timber for the Tubmarine. Waterco Products Ensure An Infinity Pool Set Water And Energy Within The Jungle Sustainability Down Under Australia’s first eco-certified pool featuring Waterco’s Hydrostorm 100 ECO-V variable speed pump and MultiCyclone technology has been praised by experts as a significant step for the sector – and consumers who value water and energy as precious commodities. Brisbane Prestige Plunge Pools is leading the way, becoming accredited by Climate Care Certified (CCC) – an initiative of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Australia Ltd (SPASA). CCC supports, protects and promotes the way the industry operates and strives for bestpractice solution. SPASA CEO Lindsay McGrath said it is the first swimming pool in Australia to receive certification after satisfying the programme’s stringent requirements. “This Climate Care Certified pool is an industry first and reflects the philosophy of SPASA Australia to provide sustainable solutions so consumers can love their swimming pool and the environment at the same time,” he explained. Waterco Europe’s Division CEO Tony Fisher said third-party certification authenticates a product’s green credentials while providing confidence to eco-conscious consumers. “This programme shows that you can experience the lifestyle benefits

pool and spa ownership brings and do so without compromising the environment.” The 8-Star energy-rated Hydrostorm variable speed pump reduces energy usage by up to 82% and its ultra-quiet operation is appealing to consumers, while Waterco’s MultiCyclone pre-filters up to 80% of the swimming pool filter’s incoming dirt load, easing its workload. With energy prices rising, plunge pools have become the perfect solution for the modern pool owner. They can be a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly option, which is positioned either in-ground, partially out of ground or above-ground. Waterco Europe 01795 521733 www.waterco.eu

Ezarri has helped to improve the already irresistible Pacuare Lodge by installing their Phyllite mosaic tile range in its infinity pool. The Lodge is a luxury environmentally friendly hotel located on the shores of the Pacuare River in Costa Rica and unhappy with these incomparable surroundings, the owners of the Lodge decided to build a swimming pool in this veritable Eden. It was to be a space that was sustainable and in tune with the rhythm of the virgin rainforest. The Lodge’s owners ensure that the buildings that make up the site are integrated into the natural surroundings, so the design, construction and operation of the pool would all need to involve the least possible impact on the environment. This is where Ezarri came in, bringing all of its technological capabilities and adaptability thanks to the different mosaic collections for swimming pools. The company have hundreds of style references and colours organised into mosaic collections and can offer an exhaustive range of combinations in order to respond to every possible need. The hotel managers decided on the Phyllite style reference from the Ezarri ZEN collection of mosaics for swimming pools. This is a range of glass mosaics inspired by stone, marble and wood, with a naturally matte texture. And Phyllite itself is a matte mosaic in greys with a stone effect. It is an option which is particularly suitable for the lining of interiors, swimming pools, spas, saunas and wellness spaces. It is also a non-slip style, thanks to Safe Steps, the Ezarri non-slip system. This non-slip system for mosaics makes them safer, smoother and better for cleaning. Photometer To Help Feed Children In Africa For the rest of 2020, Water-i.d. GmbH, the manufacturer of the wellknown PoolLab 1.0® Photometer, have decided to donate €1 for each PoolLab® sold to a charity called ‘Steps for Children’. The reason for this decision? Fifteen years ago, Stephan Hock – the brother of Water-i.d.’s General Manager Andreas Hock – moved together with his wife and children to Windhoek, capital of Namibia and bought a lodge with a restaurant. His passion was and still is cooking and his talent got recognised in 2012 with Stephan being officially recognised as Namibia’s best chef. Stephan’s passion for cooking and the obvious lack of food for many school children gave inspiration to the idea of starting an online cookbook (www.cookwithstephan.com), where he and his guests are able to share recipes based on a paid subscription with the aim to use 100% of the money earned to support Namibian children with one warm meal a day.

26 April 2020 SPN 26_SPN_April_20_World_News.indd 26

Since then, he has worked with Steps for Children, knowing that each €1 collected feeds one child for one day. Andreas Hock, Managing Director of Water-i.d., wants to support his brother and the company sees itself blessed by the overwhelming success of the PoolLab 1.0® of which has sold over 35,000 units in less than three years. An initial donation of €5,000 was made together with the promise to donate another €1 for each and every PoolLab 1.0® sold until at least December 2020. Not everybody will see a direct connection between a photometer and the needs of children in Africa, so the tale of Andreas’ brother Stephan may shed some light on this idea. Extraordinary Events Have Masked Industry Successes

W

hat an unprecedented start to the year so far, with BREXIT, numerous storms leading to extensive flooding, and the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) around the world being just three external factors impacting on our industry. These occurrences all test the resilience of our industry to be able to perform effectively under this type of external pressure. As the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has started to have a significant impact in the UK, at the time of writing reported cases are set to exceed 40,000, with a death toll rapidly approaching 4,000 people. The key thing for the industry is to follow government advice to help minimise the negative impacts of the virus and to seek business help, where applicable. Companies will already have arranged for some staff (where possible) to work from home, to reduce the possibility of person-to-person contact. The potential additional costs for IT equipment may be an added burden, and some staff will obviously not be able to work from home, if they are responsible for constructing/ installing pools or hot tubs, etc. Please keep updated with the information contained in the weekly BISHTA and SPATA News (and the dedicated website pages, Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin) and do not hesitate to contact us with any queries and questions that you require answers to. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in China was making headline news just as the final preparations for SPATEX were in full swing. As the UK public health advice did not preclude large-scale indoor gatherings from happening, the exhibition went ahead as planned. Unlike last year when there was some adverse weather, this year the weather was very benign, which meant attendance figures were approximately 3.5%

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 29_SPN_April_2020_CH.indd 29

With external factors impacting our industry, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes looks at the many challenges that lay ahead, highlights recent achievements and warns about supplying goods

up on last year, with a stronger Wednesday and Thursday reported by the organisers. SPATEX was another superbly well-organised show in Coventry, and a huge thank you to everyone that exhibited and visited SPATEX 2020. Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Penny Farmer, Thay Casmar, the on site event team and my fellow SPATEX Directors (Howard Gosling, Tony Welsby, Ben Studdy and Alex Kemsley) should be very proud of their combined efforts. A large thank you also to Ross Alcock and the rest of the ISPE team for their contributions to the education programme. SPATEX is also fortunate to have the support of PWTAG and the STA amongst a number of well-respected partners for their work in Arena 2. SPATEX provided the backdrop for the annual Gala Evening for the industry to come together to celebrate another year (see page 30). Congratulations to all of the winners at the 2020 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, and the re-presentation of the ISPE awards for 2019. My thanks to Jan Hardy, Sallie LeslieGolding, Isabel Lock and Katy Warren for their excellent organisation of this Industry event. Further details of all of the award winners can be found on page 32. I would also like to thank the sponsors, whose details are below. Many of the 2020 British Pool and Hot Tub Award winners will be shortlisted for the European Pool and Spa Awards 2020. More details will follow, as the event is proposed to be held at Piscine Forum in Bologna, Italy in 2021. The shortlisted companies will be announced in a future issue of SPN. The work with our colleagues from Europe continues through EUSA under Bert Granderath (from bsw, Germany) who is the new President. There are currently 12 national pool and spa associations that are EUSA members. Work on the next WAPSA

meeting in Lyon later this year is underway, and this is an exciting collaboration with colleagues not only from Europe, but actively supported by Australia, America, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. Finally, back at home, I recently attended a meeting in London, jointly hosted by MI5, the Home Office and the Counter-Terrorism Unit of the Metropolitan Police. It is so important for our industry to play its part in reducing the chances of our chemical products landing up in the hands of terrorists. We, therefore, have plans in place to provide information for our industry to raise awareness of this threat. These will include companies being aware of and following various laws. For example to reduce the chances of corrosive substances being used to harm people (e.g. Offensive Weapons Act) and the need for an Explosive Precursors and Poisons (EPP) licence if a domestic owner wants hydrogen peroxide at a strength greater than 12% or sulphuric acid above 15%. There is also the thorny issue of ensuring that chemicals classed as ‘Dangerous Goods’ are not posted out by Royal Mail as they are not a registered carrier for such items. The key message is to ‘Know Your Customer’ to avoid the possibility of inadvertently helping a wouldbe terrorist getting their hands on these types of products. Suspicious transactions and thefts of chemicals should be reported to the national contact point on 0800 789321 or emailed to chemical.reporting@met.police.uk

The Annual Gala Evening Brings The Industry Together As the biggest social event of the year, the annual Gala Evening is a chance for the hot tub and swimming pool industries to come together for a night to remember!

ith ‘Oscar-Esque’ status in the Water Leisure Industry, the 2020 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards winners were announced in Coventry at the industry’s annual Gala Evening, held during the first evening of SPATEX (Tuesday 28 January 2020). The combined swimming pool, spa, hot tub and wellness industry awards attract entries from companies across Britain (and some from overseas). These national awards bring together BISHTA and SPATA to celebrate the achievements and acknowledge the best, boldest and most creative projects. Presenting the top awards on the night was special guest Jack Laugher MBE, who made history at the 2016 Olympics. Jack and (his diving partner at the time) Chris Mears became the first-ever diving gold medal winners for Great Britain in the men’s synchronised 3-metre Springboard. Jack then followed this up (a week later) with an Individual silver in the 3m Springboard becoming the first British diver to win multiple Olympic diving medals at the same Games. The evening always starts with a drinks reception. This year, guests were treated to a special ‘Moet’ champagne reception courtesy of award sponsors Heatstar, who this year celebrate their 40th Anniversary. So as the drinks were flowing the scene was set for a spectacular evening. Guests were welcomed by toastmaster, Tony Rance, with presenter, Phil Oldershaw comparing the British Pool & Hot Tub

Award ceremony. The award winners were announced by: Will Dando (BSPF President), Pete Grinnall (BISHTA Chairman) and Richard Carrington (SPATA Chairman) with help from this year’s award category sponsors. The event had a ‘1940s’ theme (inspired by the 75th Anniversary of VE Day this year) and featured the return of the ‘fun’ photo booth and a chance to have photos taken by a professional photographer, with special guest Jack Laugher providing fantastic mementoes of the evening. There followed a three-course dinner, the awards presentations and then guests were entertained by Jivin’ Miss Daisy (a swing, jazz and jive band) with guests able to dance the night away until the early hours to music provided by DJ James Penny.

Open to everyone to attend, the annual Gala Evening provides an exceptional opportunity for the whole industry to come together, offering a great social event for those exhibiting or visiting SPATEX. In business terms, it is a chance to network with industry peers both from home and overseas, where new contacts and business relationships can begin. Ultimately, the awards are an essential platform to showcase the best hot tubs, spas, swimming pools and wellness projects, raising the profile of the water leisure industry (as a whole) through consumer awareness at home and abroad and an exceptional opportunity to promote the awards far and wide. Looking forward to SPATEX 2021, next year’s Gala Evening will take place on the evening of Tuesday 2 February with booking available later this year. The evening is set to be bigger and better than ever before as it will be a joint anniversary celebration with SPATA marking its 60th year, BISHTA celebrating its 20th and SPATEX will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. Watch this space in future issues (and on the BISHTA and SPATA Facebook pages and website blogs) for big news, of this not-to-be-missed celebration with surprises to thrill and entertain. All the images of the award winners can be viewed on the BISHTA and SPATA websites, including the full gallery from the Industry Gala Evening. Online entry for the 2021 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards will open this summer (online) and will close at the beginning of November 2020. Entry is open to members of BISHTA and SPATA, so if you have any queries about joining either, entering the awards or becoming a sponsor of the awards evening, please contact the relevant association. STA POOL PLANT

Pool Plant Operators: The Crucial Cog In Health & Safety With pool plant management playing a crucial role in the running of a wide range of pools, Luke Griffiths MCIMSPA, STA’s Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) looks at the importance of fit for purpose training to meet the diverse requirements of the industry

T

he 2019 State of the UK Swimming Industry Report recently revealed that the UK swimming industry has not changed significantly in the last 12 months – 26 swimming pool sites have opened and 27 have closed, which is encouraging compared to previous years. However, what we do know is that although the total stock of swimming pools in the UK public and private sectors isn’t changing that dramatically at the moment, the carrying capacity of the water within these pools is getting deeper. Added to this are the increased demands from private swim schools vying for pool space hire and the rise in the number of interactive water features and spa leisure facilities being created. Together, this has all served to shape the UK pool landscape over the last decade, with today’s pools coming in a variety of forms, shapes and sizes, in order to meet this diverse range of uses and users. Herein lies the challenge for modern pool operators; ensuring the surging, and varying demands being placed on a swimming pool, from gala competitions through to the needs of babies and younger children and all manner of recreational users, are satisfactory for all. Nonetheless, crucially underpinning all of this is bather safety and comfort, no matter the activity; and this leads me on to discuss the importance of pool plant management. The pool plant is the engine; it envelops every ‘safety’ and ‘comfort’ aspect of a swimming pool operation – and from an operational perspective improves the customer journey and promotes retention (an important business factor in today’s leisure society).

THE CRUCIAL COG This then makes the people who are managing and running the day-to-day pool plant operations a crucial cog in ensuring the health and welfare of bathers; thus, further emphasising the importance of CIMSPA professionally endorsed pool plant operations

training. With so many factors at stake in a swimming pool environment, no corners can be cut when it comes to equipping these personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to run a safe ‘pool plant engine’. However, to facilitate this training needs to be fit for purpose for all these changing needs; the curriculum needs to be learner-friendly, robust, technically-advanced and meet the diverse requirements of the industry (as outlined above), its employers and learners. This is why in developing our Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification, we worked with and listened to STA tutors, pool operators, health professionals, regulators and professional groups involved in the health and safety management of swimming pools. In March, we took this one step further by launching an industry-first for a regulated pool plant operations qualification, the option of an online multiple-choice (MCQ) assessment. The premise being to provide a modern, flexible and blended approach to learning, and break down any training barriers so as to encourage more people to become professionally qualified in pool plant operations. In January we also re-launched the pool plant operations qualification and created new tutor resources for ATCs and a new professional book-bound printed resource manual to make the qualification even more tutor / learner-friendly. Again, reiterating the point about breaking down barriers so we have more professionally trained pool operators in the workplace keeping our pools safe. One of the first tutors to deliver the re-launched qualification, Martyn Hardy from Pool Oracle, said: “I had the privilege of delivering the latest Level 3 PPO in Sussex early January 2020. The new manual is a tremendous asset to the learners and the tutor’s resources, including the new PowerPoint really helps to keep the learners engaged. The multiple-choice questions are thought provoking too and are an enjoyable

assessment – as a result I’m pleased to confirm that all my candidates managed to pass with excellent marks”. Liam Parker, Pool Operator, was one of the learners on Martyn’s course, and he added: “With no background knowledge in pool operations, I was amazed at how well the course was presented and explained. The exam consisting of 80 multiple choice questions was difficult but due to the fantastic tutoring and supporting resources and manual, I managed to pass it.” To find out more about STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations, which was the first qualification to meet the Pool Plant Operative Professional Standard and receive professional endorsement from CIMSPA, please visit www.safetytrainingawards.co.uk/qualifications Safety Training Awards 01922 645097 www.safetytrainingawards.co.uk

POOL WATER MANAGEMENT QUALITY MARK – 12 MONTHS ON

As part of STA’s ongoing commitment to promoting the importance of best practice in a swimming pool environment, it’s also now been 12 months since the organisation collaborated with Right Directions and helped launched their new Pool Water Management Quality Mark, which forms an updated module as part of the Quest Plus assessment. The new Pool Water Management Quality Mark follows industry best practice to give pool operators guidance on how to provide safe, clean and hygienic swimming pool water and how to manage the pool in a responsible, efficient and effective way. In the coming months, in SPN, STA will be presenting case studies of those who have successfully gone through the programme.

Players use the pools after every training session to reduce the effect of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), which is exercise-induced muscle damage. “The cold plunge pool is designed to deliver a combination of cold water, preferably at 8°C working with the deep water – a critical factor to induce hydrostatic pressure on the muscle tissue,” explained Aqua Thermae Managing Director Richard Bishop. “Players stay in the cold-water pool for up to five minutes before immediately getting into the warm deep-water pool for 10-15 minutes, before repeating the process.” Faced with outdated facilities and poorquality equipment, Wolves management needed to upgrade the amenities to ensure the club’s valuable players had access to firstrate after-training recovery solutions.

SOLUTION: WATERCO’S HIGHPERFORMANCE COMMERCIAL FILTRATION SYSTEMS To maintain clean, healthy water at the Wolves’ training facility at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground – and ensure maintenance was kept to a minimum – Aqua Thermae

installed a range of Waterco products known for their durability and reliability. “Due to the two new plunge pools having high bathing loads and being used every day, it was important that the equipment was suited to these challenges in order to produce and maintain crystal clear water,” said Bishop. The SwimEx Cold Water Plunge Pool 3m3 (3,000L) kept at a temperature of 8-10°C used: • A Lacron MBF24” commercial filter with Waterco’s Glass Pearls media – provides superior water quality while reducing backwash water • A Lacronite ECO-V 1.00hp variable speed pump – for optimum filtration, quieter operation, higher reliability and maximum energy savings. Whilst the SwimEx Hot Water Plunge Pool 3m3 (3,000L) kept at a temperature of 35-37°C utilised: • A Lacron MBF24” commercial filter with Waterco’s Glass Pearls media – provides superior water quality while reducing backwash water • A Lacronite ECO-V 1.00hp variable speed pump – for optimum filtration, quieter operation, higher reliability and maximum energy savings. A Turboflo 3.00HP commercial pump – the hydraulically efficient, high-performance pump powers the 16 jets “Waterco’s Lacron Deep Bed MBF filters were used due to the confined area of the plantroom, however the filter’s one metre bed depth operating at 25m3/m2/hr ensures a high standard of in-depth filtration,” Bishop explained. “The MBF range features sight glasses as standard for backwash viewing and a side service hatch, making it the perfect

filter for the job.” Waterco Europe CEO Tony Fisher said collaborating with Aqua Thermae on the Wolves project provided the perfect outcome for Wolves management and players.“High-quality rehabilitation facilities ensure players can perform at optimum levels and concentrate on what they do best: playing the beautiful game!”

CONCLUSION: PREMIER EQUIPMENT FOR PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYERS Wolves Lead Soft Tissue Therapist Matt Wignall said Waterco’s first-class equipment had enhanced the Premier League club’s training, rehabilitation and recovery facilities. “Richard Bishop and the Aqua Thermae team managing director continue to provide myself and Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club with impeccable service. Their expert knowledge on hydrotherapy pools, automated chlorine/pH dosing systems and filtration technology has improved operating procedures and made running the SwimEx pools more cost-effective,” he explained. Waterco has become the preferred choice of many pool and spa builders throughout the world. And, as Bishop explained, it has as much to do with its premier equipment range as it does with the company’s customer service. “Over the years, we have installed Waterco equipment on many of the pools that we have built and where plantrooms have been refurbished,” he said. “It is important for us and our customers to know that the products we install are of the highest quality and that is what we get from Waterco – along with the best level of customer service and product support.” Waterco Europe 01795 521733 www.waterco.eu

SHOWCASE ACADEMY

New Products And Innovation At SCP’s 2020 Showcase Academy Taking place in February, in this edition we highlight SCP UK’s Showcase Academy which presented numerous new products to enthusiastic attendees drawn from right across the wet leisure sector

J

ust a few months after the 2019 SCP Europe International Sales Conference & Vendor Showcase hosted in Monaco, and hot on the heels of the annual SPATEX exhibition, SCP UK hosted their own Showcase Academy 10-12 February. The event, which took place well before any Coronavirus lockdown, was held at the grand setting of the Stanhill Court Hotel – a venue located just a 10 minute drive from the company’s Crawleybased head office and distribution centre. The three-day event focused on new products and innovation in order to ensure what was hoped to be a fruitful 2020 season. Speaking before the event, Ian Pratt, SCP UK’s Sales, Sourcing & Marketing Director stated: “The SCP Showcase Academy is important because it demonstrates our large diversity of products, not only in the private pool domain, but also in the commercial pool, water treatment and wellness sectors. We welcome new customers and strive to help develop their business with SCP’s added values services, including: commercial pool solutions, wellness solutions, spare parts support, easy online ordering (Pool360), and training sessions throughout the year (SCP Academy). We do everything we can to ensure success for our customers.” Having prepared for what the company expected to be their most successful Academy Showcase to date, the event didn’t disappoint and from the moment visitors pulled into the spacious car park of the Manor House venue, it was clear the trade were keen to get up close with the company’s latest product ranges. Across each of the three days, a steady stream of Showcase attendees were invited to visit vendor

stands and to network with professionals from across the pool and spa industry. This year, SCP UK had the pleasure to welcome the following UK-based and International teams to the Showcase Academy: Pentair, Hayward, NextPool, Davey, UWE Jetstream, Latham, Avady, Tintometer, Sigura (Fi-Clor), Total Water Products, Impact, Aquachek, Hexagone, Elecro, Waterco, Griffon, Maytronics, Haogenplast, Cove/Nordic Spa Sentiotec/Almost Heaven Saunas and Intopool. A number of these brands were existing suppliers but some were completely new too. One such brand which was Griffon and their representative was kept busy talking through the company’s wide range of plumbing, maintenance and repair solutions. With so many companies, brands and products on display, the event was in effect its own mini exhibition and the gathering of the heavy hitters from across so many sectors ensured an exciting week for all who made the journey to Surrey. The Showcase featured a variety of new products, including: heat pumps, pumps, dehumidifiers, the Acti Chemical range, plus

an above-ground pool display! Beyond water treatment solutions and pool products, SCP also expanded the scope of the Showcase Academy by dedicating a portion of the event to Wellness. Attendees were able to catch a glimpse of the newest products from brands including Wellis, Garden Leisure and Week End Spas. Guests were able to get a firsthand look at the 2020 Wellness selection, which included numerous spa and hot tub accessories, a variety of hot tub models plus stand out items such as the Danube W-Flow swim spa from Wellis and the Party XL hot tub from Garden Leisure. Speaking on the day, Ian Pratt and other members of the SCP UK team were delighted with the attendance levels and see the event as an essential part of the company’s sales success. A number of products from the Academy Showcase are included within this issue of SPN and more will continue to be covered throughout the year. SCP UK 01293 546126 www.scpeurope.com

BRAND FOCUS

A Complete Package For Pool Installers In this edition, we take a closer look at Bosta UK’s ‘Norsup’ brand and look at some of the benefits on offer for installers who supply this exclusive range

P

rofessional pool installers are always on the lookout for new, exclusive product ranges to offer their customers. However, exclusivity is not always easy to offer nowadays, with a vast range of products available for general sale through a high number of outlets. So, the question is, how can installers feel confident they will not be undercut? One answer is the Norsup pool range from Bosta UK. In addition to providing a reliable and high quality product range, after thinking long and hard about what matters most to pool installers, the company came up with the following additional essentials: • Extended warranty periods • A robust back-up service • Exclusivity to installers • Competitive pricing • Reward for loyalty

SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A NORSUP DEALER? Every dealer has been chosen for the strength of the relationship built up over many years. Bosta wants to reward their customers who have consistently shown a professional and skilled approach to pool building by offering them a product range they can trust and which will set them apart from their competitors. Every product has been carefully selected for its unique features and the length of warranty the company can provide – does any other product range offer 4 years warranty on heat pumps, pool cleaners and UV systems? Exclusivity to pool installers also means the Norsup product range can only be sold by installers. Established dealers receive preferential discounts, display equipment and marketing materials as well as registration onto a ‘Find a dealer’ scheme found at www.norsup.eu. Looking after dealers doesn’t end there though and Bosta are keen to create a tight-knit network of dealers with events playing a key role in achieving this objective.

THE NORSUP DEALER DAY In February 2020, the company held their

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 47_SPN_April_20_Bosta.indd 47

second Norsup dealer day. Not only was this day great fun, it was also vitally important as Bosta’s customers had the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about the brand’s products and could see them in action in a specially designed demo system which included a new prototype ‘NorsupOne’ control system and salt chlorinator. Bosta also had suppliers give unique insights into their products supplied exclusively through Norsup. Finally, customers also got to meet many of the Bosta team members as well as service team staff from Megagroup based in the Netherlands. Jake Fronda of Love to Swim was one of many attendees who appreciated the event, saying: “Thank you for a wonderful day yesterday. I think I can safely say that I and everyone else had a fantastic time!” Sarah Wilson, Marketing Manager at Bosta UK said: “It was great to spend time with the guests and equally great to see their faces after driving round the Donington race circuit. Thanks to our instructors, everybody got to drive numerous cars and get a feel for the racing life! We hope to meet with more new customers as we will definitely be organising another event in early 2021.”

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS REWARD EVENT 2020 As a loyalty reward for 2019 sales, Bosta UK recently took a number of Norsup customers to Reykjavik in Iceland and the trip could not have been more successful. A lot was crammed into the three days but here’s a brief insight into what took place: DAY 1: Thursday afternoon saw a leisurely start at Gatwick. The group

landed in Reykjavik on time and first impressions of Iceland were snow, snow and more snow! The Center Hotel, Thingholt was splendid and located smack in the middle of the town so only a short walk to the group’s dining destination – the Sjavargrillid seafood restaurant – and all enjoyed the best Iceland had to offer and it was amazing. Dish after dish came out including a selection of local delicacies, all washed down with some excellent local brews. DAY 2: After a good breakfast, the group boarded a coach and headed off to the ‘Blue Lagoon’ – an enormous, geothermally heated lagoon. A magical experience, especially when the snow started to fall. Afterwards, it was back to town for yet more local brews. Then the big one… the Northern lights. For the three weeks prior, there had been no sightings at all but the party were lucky to see an incredible display – a truly special day. DAY 3: Cars were hired and the group drove to the largest waterfall in Iceland – the impressive Gullfoss. It was freezing but a sight to behold. Then the geysers… another of the country’s marvels. “The Bosta Iceland trip was an experience I will never forget,” said Clear Water Revival’s Jack Lee. “Seeing the Northern Lights has been on my bucket list for 15 years, and observing them in real life was incredible and exceeded my expectations. The whole trip was great fun and I would definitely recommend the experience. Thanks again for an amazing and unforgettable time.” Echoing that view, Nicole Kemsley of Compass Pools said: “That was the best corporate event I have ever attended.” Bosta UK Ltd 01284 716587 www.bosta.co.uk

SPATEX Ushers In A New ‘Greener’ Decade

The water leisure industry from the UK and further afield converged on the UK’s Ricoh Arena for the 24th edition of SPATEX at the end of January. Taking place before the Coronavirus outbreak, there was plenty to see and do at the three-day Show which bounced back strongly from a weather affected 2019 event and proved to be a worthwhile trip for all who attended By Jon Wadeson

K

nown throughout Europe and further afield as the go-to Show for water leisure in the UK, the three-day SPATEX event held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry attracts all involved in the provision or operation of water leisure facilities. Installers, retailers, leisure operators, local authorities, hoteliers, architects and more – all know the value that the annual exhibition, complete with its comprehensive seminar programme offers, and as build up finished, the Show was brimming with an air of optimism and positivity. After all, twelve months prior, the 2019 edition had been weather affected (well to be more precise, threats of bad weather which never actually materialised affected visitor numbers) and in addition, after many months of uncertainty, there finally seemed to be a clearer direction with regards to Brexit. Attendees to the Show will have noticed that 2020 was the year it turned ‘Green’. Incredible Hulk puns put aside, the organisers had dedicated the 2020 event to promote a Greener, more environmentally

friendly Industry. From the bright green carpet welcoming visitors to the Ricoh Arena’s Ericsson Hall to recyclable lanyards, and from compostable food containers to the sea of green hats at the SPATEX Networking Party, it was an endeavour that resonated with everyone and the Show’s organisers were rewarded for their efforts this year with visitor numbers up year on year by almost 4%. With this enhanced look, the venue itself with its digital entrance graphics, along with the vast majority of exhibitors had pulled out all the stops to make the Show as professional looking an event as possible. Plus the products on view combined with the free training resources that were available meant there really was something for everyone who attended. Add in the Gala Evening and it’s Awards, both of which are covered earlier on in this edition, and you can see that the Ricoh Arena really is a one-stop shop and the annual place to be for the wet leisure industry. As ever, the Show proved to be the perfect platform to unveil new

SHOW REVIEW

With pool and spa products side-byside, SPATEX has well and truly put to bed the myth that the Show only covers swimming pools

With a functioning demo pool drawing visitors, staff on the NIVEKO stand were kept busy throughout the three days New exhibitors Rigo Spa went to SPATEX with zero expectations and were delighted with the response regarding the quality of their products

initiatives and products to a large audience, and the feedback was very positive. “SPATEX 2020 has been nothing short of phenomenal for our new product,” said Alex Kemsley of Waterstream. His view was echoed by an equally impressed Mark Dibbens of Thermalec who said: “SPATEX 2020 was the launch pad for Thermalec’s In Line Heater for spas and small pools and it has been so well received. We will certainly be back next year!” 110 top quality companies participated at SPATEX 2020. Drawn from the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers, they took the Show’s message to their heart and displayed some of the world’s most advanced low energy, low carbon footprint products. At times, it felt like the hall was awash with technical know-how and inspiration from across a number of sectors. The strong presence of hot tub and spa related companies continued from previous years and their repeat attendance has well and truly put to bed the myth that SPATEX is only a swimming pool show. The type of visitors in Coventry also reflected the amount of hot

tub and spa products present. “The exhibition was a huge success for The Mosaic Spa Company with a large footfall on our stand on all three days, great feedback and a raft of new customer orders. With a busy year ahead, we look forward to SPATEX 2021,” said Mike Foggin from The Mosaic Spa Co. In addition to the wide variety of exhibitors, SPATEX 2020 featured an impressive double seminar and Workshop programme which offered free education and training that is unmatched anywhere in the world. The ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) once again staged a fantastic programme of Workshops, many of which focused on how adopting a Greener approach can be embraced by all sectors to suit a variety of needs and applications. As with last year, Arena 2 hosted a parallel seminar programme which also covered a diverse number of subjects from a wide range of speakers including from PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group), STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) and Hartpury College Animal Hydrotherapy Department. All the sessions across both Arenas were well-attended with the

POOL LINERS & SYSTEMS

Splendid Lining Solutions For Projects Of Any Size With liner pools still being the most popular type of pool in the UK, there will always be a demand for a variety of lining solutions for both new build or refurbishment projects. The good news is that the days of limited choice are well and truly in the past thanks to an expanding offering of high quality and durable manufactured and on site options. So what’s available for the 2020 season? In this issue, we examine the available options By Andrea Hartshorne

T

here are countless ways to transform a swimming pool from an unsightly vision to welcoming oasis, but one of the simplest and most effective for both outdoor and indoor liner pools is a complete refresh of the inside of the pool – and for many pools across the UK, that means replacing the liner. Each season, the quality and range of designs, colours, patterns and now textures that are available increases, meaning pool owners who wish to transform or renovate their pride and joy can do so quickly and at a relatively low cost. “The options to create the ‘look’ of the liner have also developed dramatically in recent years,” said Certikin Product Manager, Craig Williamson. “Whilst most of the traditional classics are still available, the introduction of vibrant colours, photographic printing, metallic and pearlescent finishes to spread light around the pool and engraved finishes that offer a natural stone look and ‘touch’, mean that the finished look to a pool can be unique, classical, dramatic or plain and simple. This explosion in options is not only restricted to factory made liner component materials, as used to be the case, but has extended into commercial grade materials. The site applied lining option, which was once the preserve of the commercial pool, is now desirable to the domestic owner who can combine the benefits of a heavy grade liner with the colour, pattern or effect they wish to see every time they swim.” A superb solution for renovation projects and refurbishments both big and small, a new pool lining whether produced in a factory or applied on-site provides the capacity to give used pools both in the domestic and commercial sectors the chance to impress again. Regardless of size, style or aesthetic requirement, there’s sure to be a liner or lining solution that ticks all the necessary boxes and we take a look at just some of the available options.

ALKORPLAN AND AQUAFLEX PROVIDE COMMERCIAL POOL CONFIDENCE Aquaflex is proud to provide the UK swimming pool industry with Alkorplan

approved site lining teams to cover the ever growing commercial and domestic swimming pool market. Site lining is the perfect solution for non-uniform shaped pools and offers a cost effective solution compared to other finishes such as ceramic tiles. With an expanding range of 1.5 and 2.0mm site lining patterns, customers have a variety of choices ranging from natural and ceramic embossed designs to conventional standard patterns used widely in the commercial market. Dorset-based Cresta Leisure is an advocate of the use of the Renolit Alkor material used by Aquaflex. Its durability and finish – whether it be the luxurious Touch range or the general domestic patterns – gives any pool a high quality finish and appearance. So whether it’s a new pool, or a refurbishment of an old, the versatility of on site lining gives the customer a number of affordable alternative finishing options to that of a traditional concrete tiled pool. As a Myrtha installer, the use of Alkor solutions has become the key to a number of successful installations and as consequence, Aquaflex have been involved with a number

of 2020 SPATA Gold, Silver and Bronze award winning pools that all have Alkor Liners incorporated into the Myrtha Renovaction and full panels system. Finally, the support, backup and skilled installation provided by the Aquaflex team gives Cresta the confidence to recommend and sell the Renolit material in all pool aspects. Aquaflex also produces .750mm pretailored liners in their 22,000 square foot factory in Salisbury, Wiltshire where they have a strong reputation for complex designs and non-conventional steps and features. With a design team that has the skill and the experience to incorporate new, revolutionary designs, they strive to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with a pre-tailored liner.

CASE STUDY CERTIKIN’S ON-SITE LINING TEAM TRANSFORM THIRTY-YEAR OLD POOL With the renovation of their house complete, the McGarry family from Liss in Hampshire turned their attention to the garden’s derelict leaf-covered swimming pool. Since moving in five years ago, the family hadn’t even taken the old ripped cover off the thirty-year old pool, and indeed didn’t have any idea how deep it was. On investigation, a 12m by 6m concrete tiled pool appeared from out of the gloom. This constant slope pool varied in depth from 1.1m to 3m. Given the job of transforming it into a state-of-the-art 21st century pool, was award winning Simplex Pools, based on Hayling Island in Hampshire. Without further ado, they called on the services of Certikin’s on-site lining team. Simplex’s Gareth Lancaster said: “We have used the team on many occasions and they always do a fantastic job so it seemed the perfect solution for this pool.” The team set about renovating the tired pool with a beautiful Touch Marble-effect liner topped off with a ceramic effect tile band. The original pool’s square steps were

54 April 2020 SPN 53-56_SPN_April_20_Liner_Pools.indd 54

removed and replaced with half circle steps by Simplex. The lining was completed within four days leaving Simplex to add all the other essential ingredients that make it a Certikin pool from top to bottom. Gareth added: “On-site lining has really has changed this pool from being tired and

redundant, to a centre point for exercise, entertaining the children and social gatherings.” Simplex Pools 0345 576 1084 www.simplexpools.co.uk

POOL LINERS & SYSTEMS CERTIKIN INTERNATIONAL OFFERS A LEADING LINER LINE-UP Designed for both new build and refurbishment, Certikin International, has an ever-expanding portfolio of high quality, durable options. “Whether it be a factory made ‘bag’ liner or a heavy duty site applied liner, it is certainly true that in recent years the range and quality of swimming pool vinyl linings has improved significantly,” said Certikin Product Manager, Craig Williamson. As opposed to the traditional single ply 0.75mm vinyl used for factory made liners, site applied linings, such as Certikin’s Infinite range, use a 1.5mm – 2mm three ply product. This is manufactured from two layers of high quality swimming pool grade vinyl which encapsulate a woven scrim, to offer prolonged strength and durability. This makes it ideal for heavy use commercial environments and also extra long lasting in a standard domestic environment. Certikin maximise the opportunities to pass on these benefits to installers and pool owners by sourcing pool vinyl for both factory made liners and the Infinite On-Site applied liner from three of the world’s leading pool vinyl manufacturers, Elbtal Plastics, Canadian General Tower and Renolit who between them have over 160 years of experience in vinyl manufacture. All vinyls are specifically formulated for use in swimming pools and meet all the required standards. To line a pool and guarantee a long-lasting tailor-made finish, nothing compares to Certikin’s Infinite On-site Lining Service. It’s quick and efficient (approx. four working days for an average sized domestic hopper pool with steps) and there is no curing or standing period. It’s suitable for both new and old pools of domestic or commercial size and can accommodate complex shapes, steps, ledges and pits. The longevity of the product, when compared to thinner linings or paints (it comes with a 15-year pro rata warranty), is a major advantage, particularly for commercial pools.

ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS

Convenience Rules With One-piece Pools With over 55 years of experience, the LPW pool range is now being made available throughout the UK by Fairlocks Pool Products

With quality materials and finishes combined with the benefit of being able to be installed in a matter of days rather than weeks, one-piece pools are the perfect solution for a hassle-free pool build experience. Add in some impressive warranties and more choice than ever before and it’s easy to see why they have been embraced by both owners and installers. D

emand in the UK for one-piece swimming pools has expanded over recent years and their popularity can be put down to one thing more than anything else – convenience – and that includes quick delivery, relatively straightforward installation and low ongoing maintenance costs. Sprinkle on to what is already a great package some stunning modern looks, competitive pricing and some fantastic warranties and it’s a package that’s hard to beat.

With plumbing, fittings and equipment in place and ready to go direct from the factory, they cause the minimum amount of fuss and disruption during installation – and that’s a benefit that should not be under estimated. If time really is money, it’s no great surprise that both owners and installers are increasingly embracing them as a hasslefree and cost-effective option. Of course, peace of mind has also played its part with the majority of concerns from yesteryear having been addressed with

improved durabilty and reliability backed up with impressive warranties. There’s also now a huge range of finishing options too so in short, it’s difficult to identify any real downsides to these onepiece wonders which can often last up to 50 years. Even access challenges are rarely an issue thanks to an array of creative delivery methods and options to split the pool and join it again on site. In short, one-piece pools provide an impressive and hard to ignore package of benefits versus other more traditional pool options and for many, it’s a something that’s just too tempting to ignore. Over recent years, a number of new brands have entered the UK market – some have failed to gain traction but others have been successful – and each hopes to enjoy some of the action within this buoyant sector. With new entrants comes more choice and in this issue, we discover what’s on offer in the onepiece pools sector.

ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS precision-crafted and technologically cuttingedge products. The company’s good reputation is a major commitment and motivates the firm to ensure that its swimming pools are always perfect and meet all the necessary expectations, not only in terms of design quality, but also the ideas and wishes of their owners. Each pool is made using a High-Tech Polymer material specially modified for the production of NIVEKO’s products, which is currently the technological cutting edge in its field. The quality of the material is primarily down to its extremely long lifetime and high resistance to the effects of chlorine. The main advantage of the pools is that they combine the benefits of one-piece construction and those of custom-made ‘concrete’ options. NIVEKO custom built monopools are not limited in terms of their shape, the type of pool technology (skimmer or overflow), size or design. Other bonuses include quick delivery times and ease of installation, which is completed in just a few days. NIVEKO’s extensive portfolio includes the Skimmer Top Level pool, an elegant solution with a higher water level, while their Skimmer Invisible pool offers a unique way of installing the company’s own skimmer, forming a minimalist transition between the pool wall and the water drain while keeping the water level as high as possible. Overflow types have now become NIVEKO’s main line of pools which includes the basic Overflow Multi which features an embedded PVC grid or stone whilst the individual Overflow Advance features bonded stone. The Overflow Infinity is suitable for environments with a diversity of terrain and there’s the minimalist Overflow Evolution, where the transition between the water and

the surrounding area is so slight that it gives the impression of a single consistent surface. Finally, the Overflow Underflow pool is a highly individual version of an overflow pool, where the water flows away under the floor, thus completely eliminating any edge or end to the surface of the overflow trough.

LPW’S ONE-PIECE POOLS – MAKING MEMORIES FOR LIFE With over 55 years of experience and innovating design of one-piece solutions, the LPW pool range is now being made available throughout the UK by Fairlocks Pool Products. The pools are manufactured as a single, complete pool shell that can be lowered into a pre-prepared hole in the ground. A strictly controlled construction process ensures the pools are built to the highest quality. With an insulating

honeycomb structure forming the core on which there are six layers of vinyl ester resin with further glass fibre support, the reinforced structure provides strength and rigidity as well a high degree of insulation. Uncompromising quality control throughout the process enables LPW to ensure every customer gets the best out of Belgian knowhow and experience too. This gives LPW the confidence to offer the only lifetime guarantee available in the market today – how is that for peace of mind! The unique design enables the added advantage for the pools to be fitted with the Covrex Automatic Slatted Cover system – one of the best options on the market. This combination minimises energy consumption and improves pool safety as well as security. LPW offer various pool models – there’s over ten different styles, shapes and models

HOLIDAY POOL INSPIRES BESPOKE NIVEKO POOL DESIGN

The NIVEKO Overflow Advance is a pool with a difference. Rather than featuring a grill type system, NIVEKO has designed this model with a continuous slot around the pool edge into which the water overflows. This feature combines with fantastic finishes of glued stone produced from natural granite. This unique solution caught the eye of Mr Neumann whose friend was having a pool installed. “My wife and I enjoy swimming and it is our children’s hobby, too. We all feel that in the hustle and bustle of the modern world we should take care to get more exercise, during which we also actually relax. When we decided to reconstruct our garden and terrace, we had a pool installed at the same time,” he said. “By coincidence, a good friend of ours was also choosing a pool at the time and it was quite by chance that we came across NIVEKO. I personally was particularly impressed with the technology and unique design – we care

about quality, which is clearly evident.” The chosen pool was a grey 15x5m NIVEKO Overflow Advance featuring individually designed steps in one corner. Explaining the choice, Mr Neumann said: “While we were on holiday in Greece the hotel swimming pool caught our eye and NIVEKO, as a manufacturer of custom

pools, was the only firm able to put our idea into practice. Eventually everything was completed just how we wanted it and we couldn’t be happier with our pool.” NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

AUTOMATIC DOMESTIC POOL COVERS

Great Pool Cover-ups That Are On Trend

The introduction of a pool cover is an obvious and logical step to help domestic owners save money and make pool ownership ‘greener’. Automatic covers go a step further by providing a labour saving and stylish solution with the additional benefits of built in safety. With further innovations and new brands in the sector, there’s now more choice than ever and we take a closer look at what’s on offer By Karen Witney

A

utomatic pool covers come in all shapes and sizes with an array of colours and materials that can sway the most discerning client. They are a great choice for domestic pools – saving pool owners both time and energy in cleaning and maintenance plus they make opening and closing the pool a piece of cake! Technology wise, automatic covers are fully up to speed with many being controllable from a smartphone, meaning that the pool can be ready for use whilst the swimmers are still in transit. These covers are as varied as they are dependable with manufacturers constantly seeking ways to improve both in quality and operation. With plenty of options on offer, this issue, we take a look at some of the stylish coverups that are available for the domestic market in 2020.

TOP OFF WITH AQUATOP FROM T&A The AquaTop Automatic pool cover from T&A comes with control box Version 6G and COVERU App. The company’s control box is well-known for its reliability and userfriendliness with programmable options enabling owners to connect and control supplementary devices. The control box can

also be easily connected to intelligent pool controls (e.g. OSPA, Propulsion etc). As T&A do not make use of any specific protocol, their control unit is compatible with all house automation systems too. With the user-friendly T&A COVERU App, the AquaTop slatted cover can now be controlled using a smartphone. The COVERU App allows adding multiple users but grants the administrator full control over the assignment of specific rights to every user. All activities are logged and based on personally selected alarm indicators, users can monitor all activities remotely. Thanks to a personal code, unauthorised use of the slat cover is avoided. The COVERU App works in combination with T&A’s COVERU controller which needs a 230VAC power supply (adaptor included) and needs to be connected to a local Wi-Fi network. T&A’s AquaGuard next generation safety cover is gaining success rapidly as more and more customers become convinced of its benefits. The cover closes the pool hermetically and thanks to the buoyancy of the water underneath the fabric, it will provide safety for both children and adults. Available in both white and anthracite grey, the control unit of the hydraulic drive has also optimised and the cover can now be

First seen at SPATEX the new Copper Solar slat option from Rollo Solar – simply a stunning colour to compliment a pool and house!

A HIGH QUALITY SOLUTION – ROLLO SOLAR FROM LIGHTHOUSE Available through Lighthouse, Rollo Solar is one of the highest quality slatted cover systems on the market today. Housing designs for any pool, above-ground or in-pool are available. Pit exit rollers reduce damage to the top of the slats whilst they exit cave pits. Stainless steel frames are designed for easy access, and accessory design and manufacture are second to none. With its own design tubular motor system installed within the roller shaft, specifically designed and built in house, it features slats that push the profile to a new level of excellence. Rollo Solar slats are truly some of the best on the market and their design features prove this. The thing that stands out is that the slat profile is curved, offering better roll dimensions and more secure storage on the roller shaft. This in turn allows for longer end sections to be achieved on the roll. The slat also has been modified along the back edge, a curved rib has been

POOLLOCK’S SOLID SAFETY BARRIERS Due to their many years of experience designing and producing automatic covers, PoolLock is able to work with domestic customers and architects to create tailored solutions to cover almost any kind of pool. PoolLock’s unique hydraulic-drive system means that the customer does not need any electrical components near the pool. The electrical power pack used to operate the cover and drive the two hydraulic motors can be placed as far from the pool as required. Opening and closing the pool is as easy as turning a key switch, which means that the cover (and the pool) are actually used once installed. PoolLock safety covers provide a solid barrier between the water and surrounding area, effectively preventing any access to the water and making them some of the safest covers on the market. In addition, all PoolLock covers will reduce the amount of heat, water and chemicals lost through evaporation, which means pool owners can save money on electricity and chemical usage. In addition to the standard fabric options, PoolLock also offers HeatLock Thermofoam canvas with enhanced insulation properties. Thanks to the foamed insulation layer applied to one side of the canvas, heat transfer across the membrane is reduced by a factor of 3 when compared to standard fabrics for

The solar powered version features a solar panel to benefit from free and eco-friendly solar power. No additional power cables are required. This allows the Easy Cover to be installed effortlessly on both new and existing pools. The Roldeck Easy Cover has a long battery capacity and will run the full programme 20 times without any solar recharging. Should the battery run empty, the Easy Cover has an integrated connection for the (optional) battery charger on the side console. To top off the Easy Cover, the new Polycarbonate Eclipse range of slats are the perfect way to rejuvenate an indoor or outdoor pool. Introduced in 2019, they include a special layer of UV protection, plus a new chamber design, which helps prevent the growth of algae. Compatible with all types of slatted covers and, made to measure, the slats are available in a variety of colours including three with solar gain and all come with a 5-year pro-rata warranty.

COVREX® SOLAR – AN ECONOMICAL AND DURABLE SOLUTION Available from Fairlocks Pool Products, the Covrex® Solar automatic swimming pool cover can offer increased energy efficiencies for domestic pools through the use of innovative solar technology. The thermal specifications of the Covrex® Solar option increases heat conductivity from the sun to the water to retain the temperature, meaning a pool equipped with a Covrex® Solar cover solution needs much less energy than a traditional cover to heat the pool water. Installing a solar cover like this on a pool can provide substantial cost savings in terms of heating, plus the level of pool water evaporation is decreased and there is a reduction in the use of chemical products and maintenance needed too. The covers are constructed using superior materials and they demonstrate substantial quality for both existing pools and new

Covrex® Solar slats are produced in polycarbonate, which makes them much more resistant to shocks or hail and generally more long-lasting than traditional PVC slats as the material is up to 16x stronger. This ensures that any pool remains safe plus chemical levels are retained and evaporation is decreased. Covrex® Solar slats have a clever anti-algae structure directly integrated in the slat profile which makes sure the cover stays clean for a longer period. Its specific structure prevents UV sun rays to enter the hollow chambers, and therefore reduces the speed of algae creation. The silver finishing coating will ensure condensation inside the slats is almost invisible. Installing a Covrex® Solar cover is a great way to reduce swimming pool costs plus they are clean, safe and can ensure the pool is operating at its very best.

OCEA OFFER TWO DECADES OF EXCELLENCE, ELEGANCE AND ENGINEERING By exclusively continuing to manufacture their own cover materials, Ocea are able to ensure that quality and elegance remain their objectives.

In addition to providing a range of great value PVC slats, Ocea offer the largest range of polycarbonate, transparent and solar profile options on the market. Thanks to the versatility of being able to produce both dual and tri-extrusion technology, Ocea slat profiles add a conductive bottom layer to your specially-selected transparent surface layer. This transforms the cover into a vital secondary heating source. What’s more, Ocea offers the widest choice of polycarbonate, transparent and colour finishes. Ocea’s exclusive sleek and interlocking slat profile gives an unrivalled veneer finish to any pool. Alongside the supreme design, the 65mm profile is optimally engineered with versatility as a key factor; to both seal the pool surface and maximise the solar potential. Sixty five millimetre was chosen as the profile width as it is the perfect balance between maximising surface contact for heat retention and the ability to tailor the cover to bespoke shapes and sizes without detracting from the beauty of the pool finish. When it comes to drive systems, whether for an existing or a new swimming pool, Ocea

offers two kinds of systems for pool covers: the Logic system and the Classic system. Boasting a 25 year industry pedigree, the Classic motor system is the traditional method for motorising an automatic pool cover whereas the advantage of the Ocea Logic motor system is that it is fitted inside the cover roller itself, thus minimalising the installation space with no moving parts outside of the pool.

SCP OFFERS EUROPEAN COMPLIANCE WITH ABRIBLUE Distributed in the UK by SCP, there is an efficient, sustainable and safe cover solution in compliance with the French Norm NF P 90-308 – the range produced by Abriblue. To give a general overview of the safety requirements introduced by standard NF P 90-308, these are the main points which mean that a cover can be considered as a ‘safety cover’: • The cover must be constructed as to prevent a child under the age of 5 falling into the water plus a child must not be able to get underneath the cover • The cover must be able to withstand the

CASE STUDY COVERSTAR – THE SAFETY COVER WITH A STARRING ROLE When Hampshire pool retailer, Neptune pools were called out to valet a pool and hot tub that they had installed last year, it gave them a chance to admire their handiwork. The addition of a family swimming pool is one of the best ways to bring a family together and create a focus for entertainment for all ages from toddlers to old age pensioners. Lee Campbell, Managing Director of Neptune said: “This pool sums up for me just how much fun having a family pool can offer by the provision of its shared experience. I was proud of our work, not only does the swimming pool look fantastic, but it does what it sets out to achieve and the Coverstar safety cover

ensures that it is a totally safe environment when the pool is not in use.” With two young children, safety was naturally top of the Murphy’s priority list and, without hesitation, Lee made his recommendation: “It has to be a Coverstar.”

Lee took the clients to view several of his existing clients’ pools complete with Coverstars and their minds were quickly made up. Work started last June on the 4.50m x 10.0m rectangular pool with a flat bottom profile and 1.40m water depth. It was constructed from standard concrete blocks with 100mm insulation to the walls and floor and finished with 50mm floor screed and 30mm wall rendering. The pool has in-wall tracks for the pit mounted Coverstar to keep the overall look smart and clean. Neptune Swimming Pools 023 8090 0106 www.neptuneswimmingpools.co.uk

AUTOMATIC DOMESTIC POOL COVERS weight of a 100 kg adult • The systems of fastening the cover onto the pool deck must not be liable to injure or cause a child to fall • The cover must not cause any injury to a child trying to manipulate it • For automatic slatted covers, the starter system must be lockable and child-proof. Three of their popular models are the OPEN SOLAR, OPEN AERO and IMM’AX Cover. The OPEN SOLAR energy cover is easy to install, environmentally friendly and ideal for existing pools. It is a compact deck solution to secure a pool and needs an average of five hours per day of sun exposure to ensure correct operation. The OPEN AERO connected automatic cover is more than a safety cover. It features all the technical advantages of the OPEN CLASSIC above-water slatted pool cover but boasts a new design, adjustable integrated ambient lighting, and above all, a remote connection, so is controllable from a smartphone. Lastly, there’s the IMM’AX Cover – a motorised, submerged slatted cover providing the ideal balance between safety, functionality, discretion and aesthetics. This automatic safety cover has axial motorisation and features NON’CO material and electronic end-stop sensors. This cover is controllable from a smartphone too.

GOLDEN COAST HAS THE POOL COVERED Choosing a pool cover needn’t mean having something that stands out and looks bulky next to a pool. The DEL Rollinside slatted automatic cover is an ideal solution, as its patented system means the cover can be built into the bottom of the pool, where it is cleverly hidden within a pit immersed underwater. The Rollinside slatted cover is available through Golden Coast, the UK distributor for DEL pool covers. Luke Honnoraty, Technical Sales at Golden Coast said: “The Rollinside slatted cover can be retrofitted to a pool that is being refurbished, or can be incorporated

Available from SCP UK, Abriblue’s OPEN AERO boasts a new design, adjustable integrated ambient lighting, and above all, a remote connection

They are a great choice for domestic pools – saving pool owners both time and energy in cleaning and maintenance plus they make opening and closing the pool a piece of cake!” into a new build. Retrofitting a DEL product is very straightforward as pool builders are provided with a set of installation manuals to guide them through the process.” The Rollinside cover can be fitted to pools ranging from 2.5m x 3m up to 6m x 20m. It is available as horizontal side decking, or as vertical and horizontal side decking. Customers can choose either opaque PVC slats or solar polycarbonate slats, which are both available in several colours to suit the aesthetic of the pool. The cover is fitted with a torque limiter that stops the cover from opening if an abnormal strain is detected. For added safety, it is controlled using a passwordprotected DEL Wi-Key remote control, which allows owners to open and close their

cover via Wi-Fi, replacing the need for keyoperated buttons. The Wi-Key is available on all DEL automatic and safety covers. It is quick and easy to install as there is no hardwiring and it’s supplied pre-paired by the factory.

Covrex® slats are solid, providing both additional rigidity and a perfect finish on curves which can be cut, on site, to fit any shape.

5 YEAR WARRANTY INCLUDED

This is no ordinary pool cover, it has huge advantages over traditional PVC slatted covers in terms of insulation properties with average thermal conductivity of = 0.0821 W/(mK) or a u value of 5.8. The profile structures are made from expanded PVC-foam, coextruded with polyurethane. The profile exterior is high density PVC, which gives a perfectly smooth surface to prevent any algae formation either above or below the water level.

Covrex® covers comply with the French safety standard NF P 90308 Version 2006, probably the strictest standard in the market. They provide excellent resistance to weather and UV which makes them suitable for use all year round and come with an amazing standard 5 year warranty. Covrex® is the future; so get ahead of your competitors before it’s too late!

OPINION

Events Are Moving At An Incredible Pace “I have rewritten this article once already. I wonder how accurate it will be when you finally read it?” asks Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast

W

hen I first wrote this article at the beginning of March I set out to write a very positive piece. Today, I decided it needed what they call, another run through the typewriter. Please don’t get me wrong. The last thing I am suggesting is that we, or anyone, panic but I think we all agree the Coronavirus is something that we have to take seriously. In that first draft I wrote: ‘At time of writing there were 51 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the Coronavirus, in the UK and that number will surely grow’. Media coverage has ranged from hysterical forecasts of mass extinction to suggestions to keep calm and wash your hands. The truth is certainly somewhere between the two. Coronavirus will have an effect on our industry, as it probably will affect the entire economy but quite how bad that might be remains to be seen. Certainly hysteria and panic will only make things worse.

NOW WASH YOUR HANDS At the time of writing this new piece, there are total of 3,269 cases of coronavirus confirmed in the UK. As a population we are supposed to be selfisolating or social distancing, dependent on our circumstances. Universities and schools are closed. Exams are cancelled. Businesses are closing. The media is full of pictures of empty shelves but on my last visit to the shops, the shelves were full of food, although perhaps sadly lacking in loo roll. The things that we can do to limit the spread of the virus seem simple and effective. If we exercise some common sense in how we behave as individuals, it seems that the medical profession and the supply chain will do their best to look after us. Still, these are challenging times.

ANXIETY IS CONTAGIOUS People catch the virus from an infected person; they can catch worry, and even fear, from their phone. Apparently, evolution programmed us to take more notice of bad news than good. If your fellow caveman told you that a sabretoothed tiger was roaming nearby or that a particular berry was poisonous then it made sense to move that information to the top of the priority list. There is logic to the thought that those who didn’t do that failed to make their contribution to the gene pool; that many of the happy-go-lucky cavemen died out and it explains why we are so obsessed with bad news. In the present situation, most people I talk to think that they are either worrying too much or not enough; but they aren’t sure which. It is certainly no time for fake news or false information.

EXTRAORDINARY TIMES ‘The spread of COVID-19 forces us to rethink how we work and live our lives’.

Apparently, evolution programmed us to take more notice of bad news than good. If your fellow caveman told you that a sabretoothed tiger was roaming nearby or that a particular berry was poisonous then it made sense to move that information to the top of the priority list” 76 April 2020 SPN 76_SPN_April_2020_Opinion_2.indd 76

That was the opening line in GC’s most recent newsletter and it was not something that I ever imagined having to write. At the moment we are still taking orders and we are almost fully staffed but we are aware that could all change. Government could impose changes on us or our circumstances could change. I am sure that your business is in a similar position. We collected some information on the effects of coronavirus on pools, spas and saunas and, if you would be interested in that, there is a link to it on the home page of goldenc.com.

AND TOMORROW? This pandemic may be new, but it isn’t unique. The world has suffered like this before and we are still here. The fact that COVID-19 has spread so widely and so quickly says something about how interconnected the modern world is. In the days before the virus, climate change was the common threat that many people felt they were facing. Both of these challenges affect the entire world and will need the world to work together if we are to truly overcome them. The same is true for us as individuals, in our industry and the others; the more we work together and support each other, the more likely we are to overcome the challenges that face us. I wish you all the very best. Now, wash your hands. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
