SPN incorporating Pool & Spa Industry is the official trade magazine for the UK wet leisure markets and is the only trade publication that invests in the industry it serves.
With the show season just around the corner, we have previews for October’s Hot Tub Living Expo held at the NEC plus November’s Piscine Global which is in Lyon. As the largest industry show in the world, it’s arguably a must attend event. Having already touched on the subject of the weather, it seems appropriate that we have a feature on enclosures – products that ensure that pools and spas can be used to their full potential, regardless of the conditions. We also take a good look at high-end hot tubs, a key segment of the market which offers the ultimate luxury experience to the serious tub enthusiast.

Well since the last edition of SPN, the UK weather finally made an effort and improved somewhat, but once again, it’s not been the ideal summer season for the country as a whole and therefore, sadly, for the industry. What has been good though was watching the truly amazing efforts of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes. I must admit, I lost count of the times I found myself willing them on (shouting at my TV, often during the small hours) and both sporting spectacles were an inspiration to watch. They were of course made even better thanks to some amazing medal winning performances which also ensured that the spotlight was firmly on swimming and diving in Rio – something that can only benefit the industry as a whole. Even the fiasco of the ‘green pool’, which made headlines everywhere and got people talking, should, in my opinion, be seen as a positive. After all, they say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, although I would imagine the Brazilian organisers didn’t quite see it that way! It was later revealed that unbeknown to them, 80 litres of hydrogen peroxide had been dumped into the affected pools, neutralising the chlorine that was present and therefore creating an algae bloom. The incident illustrated that even at the highest operating level, there is no room for complacency when it comes to the correct treatment of pool water. In this issue, we don’t have a feature on water treatment but we do cover our usual wide range of subjects.
For those seeking something that’s not an off the shelf solution, we’ve a piece on tiled spas and swim spas – a niche sector which offers flexible and bespoke solutions for both domestic and commercial markets alike. When it comes to water, we focus on the subject of filtration and a number of new products and innovations that are improving performance and reducing water use. On the theme of innovation, this issue we put the spotlight on Fairlocks Pool Products, a company which has provided the UK trade with a number of innovative products over the last decade and who are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. In our regular features, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams gives his thoughts on looking for the positives when we face the inevitable challenges through life, while Robbie Phillips, STA’s Lead Pool Plant Expert looks at ‘plugging the skills gap’ in the swim school sector to ensure all pools are safe for their users. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and SPATEX including a piece from WRAS Technical Adviser, Dr Steve Tuckwell, on Water Fittings Regulations. Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and abroad. So that’s this issue broken down – I hope you enjoy it and maybe we’ll see you at one of the shows over the coming months.

Rio Medal Successes Could Provide A Welcome Boost For Industry
With 13 Olympic medals achieved in swimming and diving followed by a staggering 47 medals won in the pool at the Paralympics, it’s fair to say that Rio 2016 was a great success for Great Britain pool based athletes. With the sporting spotlight firmly on a number of amazing performances, the high profile media coverage could provide a welcome boost to the UK wet leisure industry as a whole. Stand out performances included a world record performance and gold medal for Adam Peaty in the men’s 100m breaststroke, plus gold medals for synchronised diving duo, Jack Laugher and Chris Mears in the men’s 3m springboard event. The duo’s achievement was historic as it was the first Olympic diving gold ever won by the British team and the pair produced an amazing display under pressure which added the Olympic title to their existing Commonwealth and European crowns. Jack, who has been sponsored over recent years by Gloucestershire based water treatment and dosing equipment company Complete Pool Controls (CPC), also won a silver medal in the men’s 3m springboard. Featuring in the February 2016 edition of SPN, Jack said that his sponsorship from CPC had allowed him to move to Leeds to train in a full time programme and that thanks to their support, he had been given more independence which was crucial in improving his performances both in training and competition. SPN would like to congratulate Jack and all of the athletes who flew the flag in Rio.

Plans For City Pool And Turkish Baths Approved Plans to reopen Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths have entered an exciting new phase with the granting of planning permission and listed building consent. Newcastle City Council gave the go-ahead for work to begin on transforming the Grade II listed building into a leisure destination for the 21st century. The £5m redevelopment by charity Fusion Lifestyle will bring the City Pool and Turkish Baths back into use in 2018 – along with new health and wellbeing facilities, a new spa facility and bistro café. Work is expected to begin early in 2017 on the sympathetic restoration and regeneration of the 1920s building which was designed in a distinctive neo-Georgian style. Peter Kay, Chief Executive of Fusion

Lifestyle, said: “It’s great news that planning permission has been granted for our scheme. That means we can get on with saving this magnificent building. “We’ll now be finalising the details of the redevelopment to ensure it will fully meet the needs of a modern leisure facility. This is no
small task as the huge building has been empty for several years – but a task we relish. “As well as the pool and Turkish Baths there will be a range of health and wellbeing facilities including fitness facilities, exercise studios and treatment rooms. “We are now working with our architects Napper on the interior design to ensure it is in keeping with the many original features such as the ornate plasterwork and tiled wall finishes that are being retained. “The new facilities will beautifully complement the refurbishment of the existing features to allow the building to carry on its journey for the next 100 years.”

Hydrofloors Rebranded As Twinscape
Hydrofloors have announced a rebranding along with a new corporate name. The business will now be called Twinscape® and have a tagline of ‘Reinvent the art of space’. For the last six months the company have been working on a total rebrand and are now excited to be able to announce the changes and the reasons behind them. Alexander de Wit acquired Hydrofloors® in 2014 and since then, the company has been making lots of changes to reflect the phenomenal growth and future prospects for the company. The decision was made to move the European offices from Belgium to Colchester in the UK, which happened in December 2015. Since then the company have begun to expand their team. The move positioned the company better geographically for both its global business and for its biggest European market – the UK. Products are now British designed and engineered and the company has already benefitted from the fantastic local resources. Permanent contracts to previously outsourced employees who have experience and invaluable knowledge have been implemented too. The company’s domination of the American market has continued and it recently engaged a new CEO for the US – Paolo Benedetti – who comes with a wealth of experience in the swimming pool market and related industries. Twinscape North America LLC has been established and is part of the new Twinscape Group. As product lines were extended and with more products planned, it was felt that a name was needed which would reflect the wide range of products and not just the movable floors, although
the Hydrofloors® movable floor does and will remain a core product. Hydrofloors® is now part of the Twinscape Group and will be the name for the movable floor product line. Twinscape Group 01206 838 981 www.twinscapegroup.com
Communication Is Key To Risk Management The introduction of HSG274 Part 4 from April 2016, is a reminder of the need for spa pool and leisure operators to ensure their legionella risk assessments are undertaken. (The 2006 PHE/HSE publication Management of Spa Pools has been updated and forms the new Part 4.) But what happens after the assessment? One of the biggest risks is lack of communication. Joined up thinking between estates and ‘front of house’ staff minimises risk and swimming pool and spa owners should include staff communications in their annual reviews of water safety. “We have often seen a disconnection between poolside operational staff and ‘back room’ technical teams, even for very small pools, and our aim is to bridge that gap,” said Andrew Steel, Managing Director of water treatment specialists Airmec. “Unless each has knowledge of what the other does, and a clear understanding of their own specific responsibilities, there is a risk of errors and omissions. The most likely omissions are correct logging of incidents and how they have been resolved – and that alone could be quite sufficient to attract an expensive intervention by enforcing bodies, local authorities and the HSE,”
he added. Water treatment regimes and systems are critical and complex, and they are inextricably linked with the need for adequate ventilation. All of this calls for special expertise. Thankfully, practical guidance on managing water quality and treatment has been drawn up by the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG). In practice, the HSE enforcing authorities – local authorities and the Health and Safety Executive itself – consider the PWTAG Code of Practice as the standard to be achieved in effectively managed swimming pools. A key PWTAG recommendation is that pool managers should review their water safety plan, swimming pool water treatment system and the pool hall ventilation, heating and electrical system (SPTO) at least annually and, Airmec’s Andrew Steel believes these plans should take a leaf out of the healthcare premises’ book and be holistic, involving all staff in monitoring and record keeping. NIVEKO’s Evolution Overflow Pool A Hit In The Cotswolds Set across the countryside of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire, the Cotswold Water Park is an area of 40 square miles which includes more than 150 lakes. This beautiful location provided the latest UK setting for a unique project from Monopools producer NIVEKO – a stunning Evolution overflow pool which features an integrated whirlpool spa. The pool is situated on the terrace of a modern house at the side of one of the lakes. The advantage of the minimalist Evolution pool solution is the smooth transition from pool edge to terrace – ensuring zero obstruction to the extraordinary view at the water level of the pool. The overflow on the pool is barely noticeable and the installation perfectly matches both the property and its neighbouring lake. NIVEKO s.r.o. +420 572 693 246 www.niveko-pools.com

Sheffield’s Olympic Legacy Leisure Centre Opens The new Thorncliffe Health & Leisure Centre is now open. The £7m development in High Green, Sheffield incorporates a six lane, 25-metre swimming pool, a learner pool, a major fitness suite and specialist health and research facilities as part of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM). The NCSEM is a major new Department of Health Olympic Legacy project designed to deliver education, research and clinical services from three hubs in London, East Midlands and Sheffield. As well as its links with the NCSEM, the centre will also be used
by NHS patients. The development was funded by Sheffield City Council, NCSEM and Ecclesfield Parish Council. With Sport England also investing £1m of National Lottery funding from its Iconic Facilities Fund towards the project. Places for People will operate the centre under a ten year contract to the City Council. Places for People Leisure operates more than 100 leisure centres across the country and has been UK Leisure Operator of the Year for the past three years. BRIO’s Technical Operator Course Receives IOSH Accreditation The Swimming Pool Technical Operator (SPTO) course, which is a three day Pool Plant Qualification developed by BRIO Group last year and accredited by PWTAG, has now been officially accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the second Pool Plant Course to be accredited by IOSH, and highlights the level of Health & Safety information and teaching within the course syllabus, something which is essential for pool operators today. The Onsite Designated Supervisors (ODS) course was first to be accredited, by IOSH and PWTAG and is a two day practical qualification which has been a huge success since it was introduced last September. It has been booked out across the UK and Ireland, and the SPTO course looks set for the same success. Public SPTO Courses will be running across the UK from January 2017. The Health & Safety of swimming pool and spa operations have been sorely overlooked in many centres around the UK. With the emphasis on pool operators or owners to ensure their pool is run to the latest industry standards, that their employees are fully trained and operational to run the pool safely, these courses ensure that high standards are met, by independent, experienced tutors, and in keeping with latest industry guidelines. BRIO Group are the only providers and licensed company to offer these IOSH accredited courses which are a great addition to the services they already provide which include risk assessments for swimming pools and spas, the development or updating of operating procedures, consultancy services plus much more. Aquafine UV System Solves Ongoing Chloramine Challenge A University’s aquatics facilities have recently benefitted from the installation of Aquafine UV systems. Directors at the facility, which boasts four pools and two spas, strive to create a safe and healthy environment and have continually evaluated ways to improve amenities, streamline maintenance processes and enhance patron experience. The reduction, control, and management of chloramines was an ongoing challenge though, particularly in the leisure spa, leisure pool, recreational lap pool, and dive spa. A chloramines gas blanket was occupying areas just above the water surface area and whilst some of that blanket was dissipating upward, into the facility ceiling area, a significant gaseous layer remained present at the surface of the water. This was detracting from the overall bather and competitor experience, and had become an issue. In an effort to keep the problem under control and burn off the chloramines, super-chlorination was done on a regular
14 October 2016 SPN 12&14_SPN_Oct_16_News_General.indd 14
basis. However, this increased operational costs, required staff to handle dangerous chemicals, and also required that the pools be closed for longer periods of time for maintenance. Facility Directors decided to action and after careful consideration and thorough technology exploration, UV was added to the treatment process. The installed systems use mediumpressure (MP) lamp technology and are well suited for flow rates greater than 25 gallons per minute (GPM). By utilising MP technology, lamp count is reduced by up to 90%, which ultimately reduces footprint and maintenance intervals.
Since installation, the units have reduced and maintained levels of chloramines to below 0.3 ppm and improved the overall water quality. The response from swimmers was both immediate and very positive. Aquafine are part of the leading UV manufacturer Trojan Technology and are represented in the UK by Surrey based KK Water Purification. KK Water Purification 01932 852423 www.kkwater.com

David Stalker To Step Down From CIMSPA The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) has announced that David Stalker will conclude his tenure as Chair, allowing him to focus on his growing network of facilities under the Oxygen Freejumping venture established in 2015. David Stalker completes his work at the chartered institute having overseen the organisation’s remarkable transformation. “I’m extremely proud of the achievements we have made over the last six years. It’s been a challenging journey re-shaping the institute into the strategic lead for professional development in the sport and physical activity sector and we have made some incredible gains. CIMSPA now has the endorsement of government, the support of Sport England and the backing of employers and the wider sector, something no other organisation in the sector has achieved,” said David. “CIMSPA is firmly established as a strong and successful chartered institute and is perfectly positioned to deliver the workforce development plans as tasked by government. I’m delighted to be able to hand over the reins of such a healthy organisation to Andy Reed who will drive CIMPSA’s success forward.”

Golden Coast, the UK’s leading supplier of wet leisure products, has announced the retirement of Peter Lawrence after 30 years at the family-run company. Peter’s three decades of dedication began in the Eighties, when he worked privately for a large property developer who asked Golden Coast to build an ‘award-winning pool’ that was ‘the best of its type in the country’. Golden Coast’s stunning finished swimming pool won a much-coveted national SPATA Gold Award, and when the company appointed its first accountant, they chose Peter. In the years that followed, Peter’s career took him through every part of the company – growing as the company did. Jamie Adams, Golden Coast Managing Director, said: “We’ve always been a friendly, family company. Half of our staff have been here more than 10 years. It’s a tribute to the energy and dedication of employees like Peter that we continue to be the foremost company of our kind in the UK.” In addition to Peter, Golden Coast has also announced the retirement of
long-serving employee David Hart after more than 12 years as the Devon-based company’s lead accountant. Jamie Adams said: “David’s financial guidance and support has played a vital role in Golden Coast’s enormous success; even in difficult economic conditions he has helped us grow and prosper. “As a family-run company we pride ourselves on creating a friendly and happy working environment because we believe in our employees and we think it shows in the quality of our customer service. “David has been an integral part of that affable atmosphere here at Golden Coast and we would like to thank him for more than a decade of dedication to the company. “It is testament to the energy and diligence of amazing employees like David that Golden Coast continues to be the foremost supplier of wet leisure products in the UK.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.co

The new Top’Moov from T&A
Coverwash is an automatic cleaning system for T&A’s slatted covers
T&A Invests In The Future With New Products And Production Automation Pool cover manufacturer Technics & Applications (T&A) has released two new products for the swimming pool market. The new Top’Moov is a movable version of the EcoTop automatic cover. The roller with solar power supply is mounted on an aluminum frame available in the RAL colour of choice and the top bench is finished with wood. The system has a guiding track on one side and can be moved away from the pool after opening the cover, making the complete pool length available for bathing. This solution is also compatible with nonrectangular pools. The fully automatic AquaTop cover is user-friendly and places an owners’ comfort high on the list of priorities. With this in mind, T&A have developed the ‘Coverwash’ – an automatic
cleaning system for their slatted covers. Using a booster pump in combination with high pressure nozzles, the slats get automatically cleaned every time the cover is opened or closed. This Coverwash ensures that the pool cover stays clean and maintenance is minimised. In addition to their new products, the company has also invested in two brand-new fully-automatic production lines, increasing capacity and shortening lead times. The production lines are equipped with ultrasonic welding devices and in-line quality control. The new production facility can be seen during their training days scheduled to take place in January-February 2017. Technics & Applications + 32 1423 7495 www.t-and-a.be
Quantum Put To The Test At Canine Hydrotherapy Centre Worcestershire based Swimming Pool Fitness recently put Elecro Engineering’s Quantum to the test at a Canine Hydrotherapy Centre in Droitwich. The pool is used by approximately 11-15 dogs per day, which means that the water quickly became polluted with animal hair, skin, dirt and urea, creating a very harsh environment that required a robust and effective sanitisation system. The other factor was that the customer wanted a treatment that would work in complement to their existing treatment method – bromine. The Canine Hydrotherapy Association implements a standards guideline that a residual of 3ppmof bromine or chlorine must be present in the water. Previously, Swimming Pool Fitness used a 70W standard UV unit and would dose the pool with bromine in the morning to 3ppm. The level of bromine would be monitored throughout the
20 October 2016 SPN 20-22_SPN_Oct_16_Prod_News.indd 20
day and topped up – overnight this would fall near to zero PPM. After installing the Quantum, a 55W unit, the level of bromine the following morning remained at around 2ppm, therefore, chemical consumption was cut by two thirds on a unit consuming 21% less power, ensuring considerably better results and significant savings for the pool owner. The advanced sanitisation kills all contaminants but does not affect the residual chemical, enhancing the level of treatment as the total amount of free available chlorine or bromine is higher and able to fight new pollutants entering the pool. Additionally, the level of chloramine/ bromine is reduced, and therefore skin irritation, sore eyes, respiratory problems and off-putting odours are averted.

Low Cost Solution To Slippery Decking Issues Wooden decking can become hazardous in damp and slippery conditions, creating the possible threat of slips or falls for anyone walking across the surface. Outside areas where people gather need to be made safe so FibreGrid has come up with a solution to this problem with the development of Anti Slip Standard GRP Decking Strips, part of their affordable GRP SlipGrip® Standard range. Timber decking becomes safer with these quick and easy to install DeckGrip Strips, which come supplied with decking screws and are pre-drilled. Available in lengths of 1,200mm and 2,400mm and widths of 50mm and 90mm, these decking strips are ideal for most decking areas and walkways. They are designed with a chamfered
edge to provide additional safety which reduces any possibility of trips and falls. Unlike other products, no glue is required to install the product. Their main advantages include: • This tough safety solution for decking will last longer than the lifetime of the timber. The fibreglass construction won’t rot or warp and will remain safe even in wet conditions. • The product offers cost effective, low maintenance long term safety • Tough enough for use in busy public spaces. • Rapid, easy installation means it can be done while people continue to use the area while the strips are installed From an aesthetics view point, given the choice of widths available, DeckGrip Strips are able to complement existing decking areas by making a feature of the Strips against the timber substrate. Combined Use Of Technology Lowers Operating Costs According to Heatstar, their environmental control systems can achieve the highest energy efficiency and the lowest operating costs of any similar systems. If true, it’s a compelling argument for every pool
installer and every one of their clients to specify Heatstar for their pool installation. So with that in mind, how exactly do their systems work? The Heatstar Phoenix EC – a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system for indoor swimming pools – residential or non-residential. It incorporates different, highly effective technologies working together to create what can be reasonably claimed to be the optimum environmental control solution for high spec pools. The technologies focus on three main areas: The fans used in the units, optimising heat recovery and an energy efficient dehumidification heat pump. Firstly, Heatstar have, for several years now pioneered the use of ‘Blue EC’ on-demand fan technology with backward curved fans, which are the most energy efficient on the market. These digital fans utilise ‘auto-fan’ technology whereby the speed and power of the air-recirculation fan is managed automatically to enable significant energy savings whenever
there is low demand for dehumidification or air-heating. This provides the lowest operating costs of any such system. Secondly, Heatstar utilise energy efficient dehumidification. The unit’s dehumidification heat pump creates a cold evaporator coil to condense the moisture present in the air to reduce humidity levels. Through this process the heat pump absorbs both latent and sensible energy which is upgraded and recycled back into both the pool room air and pool water. Efficiencies of over 380% are possible through this process. Last but by no means least, Heatstar use cross-flow recuperators to optimise heat recovery. The recuperator passively conducts heat from the exhausted pool room air via a series of adjoining plates directly to the incoming colder fresh air. This process, in combination with the dehumidification heat pump, produces unrivalled levels of heat recovery. This all demonstrates that after 35 years of design and innovation, the company continues to be at the cutting edge of swimming pool climate control systems. Heatstar 01983 521465 www.heatstar.com
LED Lighting That Lasts 50x Longer Than Traditional Bulbs Whether they’re modest and atmospheric or colourful and fun, underwater lighting is an attractive addition to any pool or spa. Now, with LED technology from Spectravision, transforming the ambience of any bathing area is easier than ever and requires drastically less upkeep. According to Golden Coast, the Spectravision Moonlight White LED lasts 50 times longer than a standard PAR56 bulb. Managing Director, Jamie Adams, said: “PAR56 bulbs, much like traditional 60W household lightbulbs, utilise a glowing filament to produce light and, consequently, are less durable than their LED equivalent. While a PAR56 can be expected to reasonably last just 1,000 hours – a lifespan of roughly four months in an average commercial pool – LED lights from Spectravision, by contrast, will last a massive 50,000 hours. That’s a staggering 16 years without ever having to replace a bulb. “The numbers speak for themselves; while Spectravision LED lights cost twice as much to replace, but they offer 50 times the longevity. By upgrading to LED, commercial pools could stand to save £1,755 over five years – and that’s without even taking into account the potential downtime of your pool while maintenance work takes place.” Ultra-flat, Spectravision LED lights fit standard modern light niches, and can be retrofitted to most older pools too. For those wishing to add a splash of colour to their pools, RGB models offer a spectrum of lighting options, allowing users to set
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 27-28_SPN_Oct_16_News_Eco.indd 27
the perfect tone for any occasion. An optional remote control allows users to turn the lights off and on quickly and easily, or cycle through to their desired setting. Jamie Adams concluded: “Versatile, durable and economic, LED lighting clearly has a bright future in swimming pools. While dramatically lending a luxurious ambience to any pool, their excellent lifespan reduces maintenance costs and downtime.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.GCTrade.co.uk

Let There Be Light When one of Grayfox Swimming Pools’ clients approached them to do a refurbishment project on his old and tired looking pool, the brief was simple – more light and more energy efficiency. The pool building was dark and uninviting and the client wanted Grayfox to transform it into a well-designed, bright pool with a contemporary look flooded with light. Steve Jones (Project Designer) and the team at Grayfox’s response was to add a modern glass extension and replace the whole of the old pitched tile roof with an eye catching glass one. The result speaks for itself and this beautiful pool went on to win the 2016 SPATA Gold Award for a Refurbishment Project. The glass specified by Grayfox is no ordinary glass. The sections of the roof comprise self-cleaning, Argon filled, double glazed units set into powder coated aluminium portal frames – light enhancing, contemporary and energy efficient. Still on the subject of energy efficiency, the choice for Grayfox, as with so many award winning pools, was a highly energy efficient Heatstar environmental control unit. The model chosen was the XF EC 3000 Super Plus system. Centred upon a high efficiency ‘Cross Flow’ plate air-to-air heat recuperator, the XF utilises fresh air introduction to provide natural dehumidification and uses the recuperator to maximise heat extraction from the expelled room air. The XF features the latest ‘Blue – EC’ ultra-
efficient intelligent digital invertor fan technology along with ‘Auto Fan’ intelligent air recirculation fan management and is fully compliant with the latest building control regulations for both residential and nonresidential applications. In the commissioning of the unit, Heatstar also worked with Grayfox to adapt the ductwork to have a reversible function so the ventilation ducts could pump air out as well as fresh air in. This countered any possibility of solar gain from the extensive new glazing and ensured that the roof glass remained condensation free at all times. This function is controlled by the Heatstar system utilising a ‘pool air overheat thermostat’ which operates motorised dampers within the ducting to allow this extract system to operate. Grayfox Operations Manager and Architectural Technician Steve Jones stated that he has three main reasons for mainly specifying Heatstar. They are: Economic running costs for the client. Heatstar’s renowned energy efficiency makes a huge difference to the cost of running a pool. As a perfect example, with this award winning pool running, costs have probably been halved even with the addition of a glass roof and extension. Ease of operation of the units – clients really appreciate the well-designed controls which make the units so easy to operate. The appearance and aesthetics of the
unit’s design. The look of the units reflects their quality of construction and their long term durability-form driven by function. Steve Jones added that: “Heatstar and Grayfox share the same values of quality and excellence and the Heatstar team are consummate professionals. They offer solutions not problems. Since the installation this Heatstar XF EC unit has performed perfectly and done everything it was installed to do.” Grayfox have designed and built an exceptional award winning pool with this project but the most important aspect is that the client was delighted with the end result. His brief had been met and exceeded and his comment at the end of the refurbishment was “I am over the moon with the finished job in its entirety”. A HotSpring owner for more than ten years, the star of the mockumentary ‘Life’s Too Short’ explains in the series of videos why he loves the brand and touches on customer support and after sales, health and wellbeing benefits, features and running costs plus maintenance. As you would expect
from someone who has spent many hours with comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the content in the videos isn’t 100% serious, however his love for hot tubs and the HotSpring brand is, and the actor is clearly thrilled with the many benefits that ownership has provided to him and his family over the years. Introducing The xStream Force Jet Propulsion System Vita Spa are proud to announce a new breed of swim spa with the introduction of their xStream Force Jet Propulsion System, which will be on display at the Hot Tub Living Expo at the NEC in their new VL4 Swim Spa. This new Jet Propulsion System uses proprietary ‘Anti-Turbulence’ technology to boost and smooth out the swim stream for the ultimate swimming / exercise experience. This anti-turbulence technology was creating to stop countercurrents where the water tries to bounce back down the swim stream which causes waves and makes it difficult to stay in the ‘swim lane’. The new technology has been expertly designed to fit into the existing Vita Spa swim spa range, allowing the best-selling models to be equipped with xStream Force without the need to extend the swim spa to accomodate propellers, paddles or other equipment. xStream Force Jet Propulsion has advantages over propeller or paddles when it comes to creating a swim stream. The river jets produce an 80cm wide swim stream which is 50% faster and has variable swim speeds, allowing users to swim / exercise to their own fitness level. Richard Hart, Managing Director of Aqua Warehouse Group, the distributor of Vita Spa in the UK said he was: “Very excited to have this fantastic new system at this time,” and added: “Our largest growth in sales over the last few years is in the swim spa sector where I feel we have gained good market share. I only see the introduction of xStream Force adding to this growth.”
“When I buy a pair of glasses, I want a case to protect them too,” says Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast, “and when customers spend £10,000 on a hot tub, the same principle applies. “Smart installers anticipate these concerns by offering protective accessories and fun incidentals, and when customers know you’re looking after them, they’re more likely to keep returning to you for future purchases.” The best ‘go to’ accessories are found in Golden Coast’s comprehensive Essentials catalogue or Outdoor Living range, including discreet protective covers and cleaners that extend a hot tub’s lifespan. The Cover EX by Cover Valet is one of the
fastest-selling cover lifts, and the Cover Cap protects covers themselves against the ageing effects of the elements: keeping everything pristine – even through winter. Catfish vacuum cleaners or the Pool Blaster Spa Vac – designed specifically for hot tubs – are must-haves if customers want to keep their surfaces spotless and their water crystal clear. Other popular accessory lines for tub owners include the Spa Side Umbrella which offers shade and protection, Aqua Trays for relaxation and comfort, and Signature Spa Steps that protect the tub, while allowing customers to enter and exit safely. POOL & SPA INDUSTRY
No Let Up For A Busy Industry
With another summer season now behind us, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes looks at a number of items the industry’s associations have been working on and highlights some key future events
A
nother year is flying by, and I hope that you have had a good summer business-wise. The events in Rio for the Olympics and Paralympics have certainly left a fantastic feel-good factor for swimming and other water-related activities. The green diving pool lead to a lot of social media interest, and I know that PWTAG were very busy dealing with media enquiries! This year so far has seen the completion of a European standard for Mini Pools (EN 16927 (with the work being coordinated by CEN TC 402 WG3). This standard is for the smaller ‘splasher’ pools that are bigger than the existing standard for toys (EN 71 states a water depth of 400mm or less) and pools which are not covered by the domestic pool standard (EN 16582). The European standard (EN 16927) is expected to be available to purchase early in the New Year, and subject to demand, it is possible to add it to the list of standards available to SPATA members as part of their BSOL package. BISHTA continues to be actively involved in creating the European standard for Domestic Spas and Hot Tubs (CEN TC 402 WG4) and this group has recently held a series of monthly online meetings to progress the standards. A small working group has recently met to discuss Energy Efficiency, and this group will be reporting back to the next face to face meeting being held in Berlin this November. The autumn also sees the annual conferences for BISHTA and SPATA and again this year they are being held separately, to maximise the content for the members of each of the trade associations. BISHTA’s conference is on Tuesday 4 October and SPATA’s is on Thursday 13 October. A number of topics will be covered at each conference to help members, with SPATA offering updates on British (and European) Standards Online (BSOL), advice from ACAS to support your business and there will also be updates on the revisions to SPATA Standards. These topics help keep members up to date with industry standards and expectations from the wider business world.
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 35_SPN_Oct_16_BSPF_CH.indd 33
For BISHTA’s annual conference, there will be a much-awaited presentation from Hampshire Trading Standards on the essential elements of the Consumer Rights Act, and this will be very useful to consolidate members’ understanding of their duties under this Act. There will also be updates on workforce qualifications, the continuing expansion into the holiday lodge market and it is expected that BISHTA will be updating members on the revision of the Management of Spa Pools publication. Some of these hot tub-related topics are included on page 36 of this issue. Members will also want to be aware that the BSPF AGM is due to be held on Tuesday 29 November and feedback on the BSPF will be sought at both the BISHTA and SPATA annual conferences. Please note that although there had been a previous suggestion that the BSPF were considering not appointing a BSPF President after SPATEX 2018, this draft idea has now been superseded. The current proposal agreed to be put forward to members is to retain the post of BSPF President and to make the appointments up to two years each. Alex Kemsley is the current President, and he will hand over to Will Dando at SPATEX 2018. A new vice president is to be sought at the AGM in 2018. Onto other matters and the excitement is building as we wait to learn who will be the winners of the European Pool and Spa Awards for 2016. The shortlisted UK companies are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be amongst the award recipients, and the awards presentation event is being held at Piscine Forum, in Bologna, Italy in February 2017. To be nominated for these European awards, companies based in the British Isles must first enter the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards (hosted by BISHTA and SPATA). This year, the deadline for entries is Friday 11 November and entries are submitted online. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to provide your company with the chance to win an award and thereby you can help the industry promote itself to a commercial and domestic audience.
Tickets for the industry gala dinner, featuring the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards are available from the BSPF office, priced at just £69.95 + VAT per person. The autumn also brings with it the opportunity to visit some established shows at home and abroad, such as LIW, Interbad and Piscine Global. These provide networking opportunities and a chance to see the latest products – valuable reasons to keep an eye on these shows – and you can be sure that exhibitors will have the latest updates from these shows for visitors to SPATEX 2017. Finally, SPATA will be holding some seminars at various locations in November and December to update members regarding the changes to SPATA Standards for those that cannot make the SPATA annual conference. Please contact the office if you need more information, but the plan is to hold events in Essex (Thursday 8 November), London (Tuesday 6 December) and Yorkshire (Thursday 8 December), so hopefully there will be an event reasonably near you if you could not make the annual conference. Workforce Qualifications
This issue, we highlight a range of topics, courses and qualifications relating to hot tubs – a number of which will be explored in more detail at the BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) annual conference on Tuesday 4 October, in Andover
T
here are a number of courses and qualifications available for the hot tub industry to train their staff, thanks to BISHTA. The courses include: Hot Tub Site Surveyor, an Electrical Awareness Workshop, Water Hygiene Management, Dangerous Goods and work is underway to bring you a Certified Hot Tub Technician course, in partnership with APSP.
HOT TUB SITE SURVEYOR The ‘Hot Tub Site Surveyor’ qualification will provide recognition of customer care, Health & Safety information, and also the importance of undertaking a site survey as an integral part of the process of selling hot tubs. Following a couple of successful pilot courses, plans are currently underway to provide opportunities for more of these courses in late autumn and early spring.
The course is a combination of face to face work, undertaking site surveys and an online element, including a knowledge test. BISHTA is very grateful to the STA for their support in developing the course and especially to Richard Lamburn, who was instrumental in helping to get the modules ready. BISHTA would like to wish Richard every success in his new role with the ASA and looks forward to continuing its relationship with the STA on this course.
ELECTRICAL AWARENESS WORKSHOP Knowing that many members already either employ (or subcontract) qualified electricians to install their hot tubs, or liaise with their customers to ensure that they provide a qualified person to provide the electrical supply to the hot tub, there have been very few incidents involving problems with electrical installations of hot tubs. However, when BISHTA became aware of an incident, it began discussions with NICEIC to provide a suitable course that could give awareness and insight for the staff making the final connection to a hot tub (that had already been provided with an electrical supply). Following a huge amount of effort by NICEIC and BISHTA a pilot course was successfully run this summer, and the result is courses being run this autumn and others will be arranged for spring 2017. The course is open to BISHTA members in the first instance, and several companies have chosen to join BISHTA, as a result, to benefit from the relevant knowledge passed on at this course.
COMMON WATER HYGIENE MANAGEMENT TRAINING SYLLABUS BISHTA has always insisted that companies joining BISHTA should receive suitable water treatment advice and in order to respond to changes in the knowledge required,
34 October 2016 SPN 36_SPN_Oct_16_Hot_Tub_Qual.indd 34
BISHTA’s Technical Committee has been revising and updating the syllabus to ensure that water hygiene management courses meet the current expectations. With a total of six tutors trained so far, expect a range of options to be available to you from next year onwards. The syllabus involves the following topics: • Types of Spas and Hot Tubs (including exercise/swim spas and settings – domestic/business/commercial) • Why does water need to be treated and filtered? • What can grow and how to kill it • Products for water treatment • Sanitisers • pH and Water Balance • Risk Assessments • Record keeping • What happens when it all goes wrong? • Practical water testing • Written test paper and certification • Troubleshooting tips • Health & Safety advice, including the storage, safe handling and use of chemicals • Insurance. This one day course involves the morning devoted to the relevant theory of water hygiene management and the afternoon dealing with practical water testing and a written test.
CERTIFIED HOT TUB TECHNICIAN (CHTT) As an additional training opportunity, BISHTA is currently working with colleagues from the APSP to develop courses in the UK, based on the CHTT syllabus. Work is ongoing regarding ensuring the course is made specific to the UK audience, and this includes being able to cross reference not only the American standards but also BISHTA Standards and other relevant guidance in the British Isles. It is hoped to have an update on course availability very soon. BISHTA 01264 356211 www.bishta.co.uk

Dipping Into Water Regulations
WRAS Technical Adviser, Dr Steve Tuckwell, provides a valuable update on swimming pools, spa baths and the Water Fittings Regulations
L
ike many industries, there are numerous regulations and requirements that the swimming pool and hot tub industry need to follow to be legally compliant, and this article looks at a number of elements that you should be aware of which are applicable from one particular part of water legislation.
THE LAW All water fittings and appliances connected to a plumbing system which receives water from the public supply come under the scope of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Byelaws in Scotland (collectively referred to as the regulations). These prevent contamination of drinking water supplies and promote efficient use of them. It is the installer’s legal duty to ensure the plumbing installation complies with the regulations, and users have an obligation to use and maintain plumbing installations and fittings correctly and not alter them illegally. Swimming pools and spa baths have particular risks of backflow and waste of water arising from arrangements for filling
and topping up the pool water and cleaning the pool or bath.
BACKFLOW PREVENTION ARRANGEMENTS Using an air gap to prevent backflow: Pool and spa bath water is in the highest backflow risk category (fluid category 5) and backflow prevention arrangements rated for fluid category 5 must be used for filling and topping up, for supplying water treatment units and for filter backwashing. These require a physical break in the supply, usually using a cistern with an air gap. There are different types of air gaps some, which are rated lower than fluid category 5, so it is important to select the right one. One possible arrangement is shown in Figure 1. Where space is limited a type DC pipe interrupter, which incorporates the fluid category 5 protection, can be used as an alternative to storage cisterns with an air gap. These devices have specific installation requirements. They must be a minimum 300 mm height above the spillover level with no outlet control installed downstream of the device as shown in Figure 2.
BACKFLOW If the water pressure in the pipes drops, backflow can occur through a hose outlet left submerged in the pool, with the tap not completely closed (whilst in use, by accident or because it’s faulty). Pool water, and any microorganisms or other contaminants it contains, can be drawn back into the drinking water system.
Use of hose pipe with a hose union tap: Under certain conditions designed to minimise backflow risk, a hose pipe attached to a hose union tap which is fed directly from the mains system may be permitted to fill or top-up a pool or spa. If the water company is satisfied that the conditions will always be met, with the supplier’s consent the following fluid categories and appropriate backflow devices can apply for specific applications and locations in the table. Check with your water company before making installations. The conditions are: • that an air gap is maintained at all times between the outlet of any attached hose and pool water, and the hose is not immersed or submerged in pool water; and • that any hose attached is fitted with a selfclosing trigger outlet.
NOTIFICATION The regulations require that water companies are notified and give their consent before work starts for (i) construction of a new swimming pool of more than 10,000 litres capacity (ii) a water treatment unit producing a discharge or using water for regeneration (for example, the pool filtration unit) and (iii) a pump or booster capable of drawing more than 12 l/min. In addition to the above, those working in non-household premises who are planning to extend or alter the water systems, are
Retailers – Know Your Rights F Chairman of SPATA’s Technical Committee, Peter Lang answers the question: “As a retailer, what warranties can I expect to receive from another business?”
M
ost companies who retail products from their premises are well aware of the protection that their customers have under the Consumer Rights Act, as well as other relevant legislation. However, it may come as a surprise to some business owners that the relationship they have with their wholesaler and/or manufacturer is very different. Before entering into a business to business

(B2B) contract, it is essential that the retailer checks with their supplier what exactly is (and is not) covered when the contract is agreed. The reason is that, in particular, the guarantee they get on the product they are buying can often be one year. So what is the problem if the guarantee is for one year? Retailers with the space for storage and the cash flow have been known to negotiate discounted deals to ‘bulk buy’.
This arrangement is fine if the product in question is a quick mover, but not if it stays ‘on the shelf’ for longer than one year, as there will be no valid warranty to pass onto the retailer’s customer. Companies have found themselves in a predicament when there is a problem with a product and because of the guarantee period placed upon them by the wholesaler who may choose to assist with a product out

also subject to advanced notification – unless they are a member of an Approved Contractors’ Scheme (see www.WaterSafe. org.uk). WaterSafe members will not need to provide advanced notice for extensions or alterations as they will be issuing compliance certification for their work. Details are available in a WRAS leaflet entitled ‘Information on Notification of Proposed Plumbing Work’, freely available on the WRAS website (www.wras.co.uk, click on Consumer, Resources).
PIPE MARKING The regulations require clear identification of pipes where they are carrying any water
which is not wholesome, such as pool recycle water or filter backwash water. There is only one recognised colour-coding scheme which is set out in British Standard BS 1710:2014 ‘Specification for identification of pipelines and services’. This standard should be used, and where deviations are considered necessary, these should be agreed with the local water company in advance.
WASTE OF WATER The regulations require all water fittings to be constructed, installed and used in a manner which will ensure water is not wasted such as through leaks. This applies equally to the construction of pools and
Figure 1: Filling and top-up arrangement giving fluid category 5 backflow protection
spas as well as to the water systems and processes connected to them. There is no specific regulation or guidance which provides allowable leakage. The guiding principle is to ensure all water systems and receiving vessels are watertight. During maintenance or repair which requires draining or partial emptying of the pool, diverting the water to temporary storage tanks and refilling with it on completion of the repair can save water and, in heated pools, also saving energy. ts For B2B Product Guarantees of warranty, or they may simply apply the terms and conditions in their B2B contract. This situation has happened and could have been avoided if the contract terms were provided in writing before purchase. If the terms are unacceptable, then they should be questioned and ideally modified before the sale goes through. It is worth making it very clear that the presence, or absence, of a warranty, has no impact on the consumer’s rights and that any warranty passed onto the customer can only ever be in addition to those rights, not instead. Customers should not be misled
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 38-39_SPN_Oct_16_WRAS_&_Lang.indd 37
in any way into thinking that because the warranty has expired their consumer rights have also expired. In plain language, if you have a one year guarantee from your supplier and then sell that article after it has been on the shelf for over one year, then if it fails within the Statutory period then you will potentially be left to deal with the matter and not your trade supplier. Remember that a business cannot impose its conditions on a retailer, without the agreement by the retailer, before making the contract. If you do not agree
with the terms or want a longer guarantee period, this must be stated before the B2B sale has been completed. If that agreement is not forthcoming, you can either choose to change your B2B arrangements or only buy that quantity of product that you know will sell within a reasonable timescale. SPATEX 2017 – The Next BIG Thing! With just under five months to go before the curtain rises at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, the SPATEX team is putting the wheels in motion for the biggest and best Show ever. After all, it’s not every day you turn 21, so here’s why Tuesday 31 January to Thursday 2 February are industry red letter days
S
is for special edition. Turning 21 is a milestone to celebrate, so SPATEX is pulling out all the stops to make this a very special industry event. The show is building on 2016’s success where it saw an amazing 28% increase in visitor numbers and the team are aiming to better it. Organiser Michele Bridle said: “Exhibitor stand space has been selling like hot cakes. At the time of going to press, over 80 exhibitors have signed up so we are on target for an early sell out! SPATEX is now firmly established as the UK event of the year. We are not disclosing our plans just yet but rest assured you can expect all of SPATEX’s much-loved, familiar ingredients, coupled with some exciting new celebratory twists!” Michele added: “SPATEX 2017 is a new departure for us as it will be a weekday Exhibition (Tuesday 31 January to Thursday 2 February), which is in keeping with all the other European exhibitions.”
P
is for party and networking. No celebration would be complete without a party and the SPATEX team is planning a networking spectacular. Last year’s free-to-attend Mexican themed networking party, with sombreros, moustaches, Mexican beer and tequila was widely declared an ‘excellent do’ and set the bar high! Not satisfied with that – next year SPATEX aims to go one better! Details for the SPATEX party on the evening of Wednesday 1 February will follow shortly. The Coventry based show will once again be the occasion for the much-anticipated British Pool & Hot Tub Awards gala dinner hosted by BISHTA and SPATA (call 01264 356210/1 to

book tickets) on the Tuesday evening. With networking events, and of course the Ricoh Arena’s G casino (the UK’s largest), there is plenty to justify a night away – visit the SPATEX website for some excellent accommodation deals in the vicinity.
A
is for associations and experts and SPATEX has more than you can shake a stick at! The show is the meeting ground for all the industry’s most esteemed bodies from PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group), ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers), SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association), BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association) to STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association)… to name but a few. Awash with experts, SPATEX is the best place to go if you want impartial advice and have a query on a project.
T
is for training and seminars. SPATEX is far more than just a showcase for products. Integral to SPATEX are the ISPE workshops which have over the years imparted an enormous amount of knowledge and provided free education and training that has come to be recognised throughout the industry as being an invaluable resource. For 2017, the ISPE will once again be presenting a whole raft of new technical workshops. With in excess of 20 different sessions running throughout the three days of the Show, a wide variety of topics will be covered such as the legal requirement for microbiological testing; LED technology and the latest on commercial spa operation. All attendees of the workshops receive a certificate of attendance and valuable CPD points.
In addition to the ISPE workshops, SPATEX will once again be offering a parallel programme of seminars on topics such as the most successful ways of marketing your company, the latest health and safety legislation and the stand-out product innovations for 2017. Visit the new SPATEX website for the full programme of workshops and seminars.
E
is for SPATEX’s much-valued exhibitors and with well over a hundred forecast, it is going to be a sparkling line-up! All sectors are represented, covering both the commercial and domestic markets. SPATEX attracts the big name manufacturers and suppliers and the smaller, less well-known companies and brands too. Making their exhibiting debut at the Ricoh Arena in 2017 are – All Seas Spas, Darlly, Eco Finish, Gaffey, Inbeca, Intopool and Villeroy & Boch – with new names being added on a weekly basis.
X
is for X factor and SPATEX has it in abundance as the 2016 Show proved. It’s an exciting mix of anticipation, seeing what the competition is up to, catching up with old friends and making new contacts. For many years, SPATEX has been widely regarded throughout the industry as the event that kick starts the UK pool season ahead – it’s the New Year curtain raiser. Miss SPATEX and you and your company misses out on all that is new and happening in the industry plus a helluva lot of fun too! SPATEX 01264 358558 www.spatex.co.uk

STA POOL PLANT – POOL PLANT OPERATORS CPD
Pool Users Guide To Safe Water Conditions With the swim schools now utilising a variety of pool environments for lessons, Robbie Phillips, STA’s Lead Pool Plant Expert looks at ‘plugging the skills gap’ in the sector and ensuring all pools are safe for their users
I
n the UK, the private swim school market has seen unprecedented growth over the last 5 – 10 years. At the same time we’ve also witnessed declining numbers of accessible swimming pools which has led to swim schools vying for pool time to cope with business demand. Every inch of spare pool space is being hired, from school pools and hydro pools to caravan parks and even domestic pools. It’s also led to swim schools building their own pools – something we will see more of in the future. While this is good news, in that it shows there is a healthy demand for swimming lessons, hiring water space (outside of the ‘traditional’ leisure centre and health club where you would ‘expect’ a management team to be on site at all times) can also be fraught with problems from a pool management perspective. We hear so many cases of swim schools turning up at a pool for example at 9am on a Saturday morning and not knowing if the caretaker has properly tested / treated the water, and there is nobody on site to ask. The reality is that this leaves the teacher in a vulnerable position where he / she has to take on the responsibility of checking to make sure the pool is safe for bathers. But do they have sufficient knowledge / training to do this? For the majority, the answer is no. As the UK’s leading provider of pool and spa plant management training, we have been
working proactively to seek a solution to this real issue – plug the skills gap so to speak. While in an ideal world, we’d expect those with a ‘responsibility’ to hold a pool plant qualification, this is not always practical for front line staff. (I say ‘responsibility’ but this is also a grey area – who is responsible, the pool owner, yes – but it’s also the swim school’s responsibility to make sure their customers are safe so it’s a very debatable subject.) The 1/2 day CPD will act as an introduction to pool plant. It is also possible to do the CPD in the morning followed by the STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Pool Water Testing in the afternoon. Giving the client some practical knowledge into pool water testing. This does not replace the essential requirement for a competent Level 3 Pool Plant Operator to be in overall control of any pool facility at all times, but it will educate front-line staff in the basics of pool plant operations. The course will teach candidates: • How to identify and take appropriate actions where potential risks are detected • How to provide recognised risk controls in relation to the risks • How to comply with current recommendations and legislation. Content (theory and practical) will include the basics on what is expected in a wellmanaged and hygienically safe pool. Subjects include basic water circulation, water
chemistry, filtration, pool temperatures, routine checks, water testing, understanding the basics of the Traffic Light Safety System and keeping records and having Pool Safe Operating Procedures (PSOP) in place. Importantly it will inform those on the front line about how to recognise risk and what to do. For all these reasons, we believe this CPD would also be highly beneficial to health club and leisure centre staff (and especially given the budget cuts we’ve witnessed of late and fears over BREXIT). For front line leisure staff to be able to identify potential risks immediately and act upon them is in the best safety interests of the public – and it helps to protect the pool itself. After all, every user of a swimming pool has the right to expect that they can enter the pool and enjoy themselves in conditions that are comfortable and free from hazards. We believe this Pool Users Guide to Safe Water Conditions CPD is a practical and commercially viable solution to the current needs of the market. It arms all those involved in and around a swimming pool with the basic knowledge needed to be able to recognise and deal with potential safety hazards. STA is working to launch the CPD in January 2017. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

Celebrating 10 Years Of Success
Now established as trusted supplier within the UK pool industry, this issue we take a look at Oxfordshire based Fairlocks Pool Products, a company which has gone from strength-to-strength over the last decade
F
airlocks is a name well-known within the pool trade thanks to the success of the long established Fairlocks yellow vac head – a product which has been manufactured for many years – but on 19 September 2006, a new company which featured the Fairlocks name was formed and since then, there’s been no looking back. With extensive backgrounds in customer service, sales and the swimming pool industry, Paul Webb and Julian Hunnable founded Fairlocks Pool Products Ltd with Back in 2007, Fairlocks started to offer the UK’s first pool inverter heat pump range for the domestic market

the intention of delivering great products combined with the best possible customer experience to the UK pool trade. The company started out selling one-piece fully tiled fibreglass swimming pools and spas made in Dubai and sold in the UK under the Profile Pools brand. After reasonable success, the profile pools brand continued, but early in 2007 Fairlocks found themselves involved in the slatted cover market, which were already commonplace on UK pools, but Julian saw the potential for business growth by always striving to achieve the best and highest standards of customer service in the market. This strategy worked, and the range of products was expanded further in 2007 with the UK’s first pool inverter heat pump range available for the domestic market. Using a Heatinverter heat pump can be up to six times more energy efficient than other conventional types of heaters, which use either electricity, gas or oil for their fuel. This, for Fairlocks, was all they needed. The constant strive to find efficient, exciting and innovative swimming pool products meant the company had no choice but to take on
www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 28/09/2016 10:07
FAIRLOCKS 10th ANNIVERSARY the pumps. In 2008, after a lot of success with the products that were available from Fairlocks, Paul and Julian offered a complete turnkey package and decided to employ their own installation engineers. It was then that Ken Morris joined the team, bringing with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. Ken’s employment meant the level of service and support was taken to a much higher level as all work could be planned and managed in house. Ken now oversees all installation work and in almost all cases, the company undertakes the complete package on behalf of most pool companies. A significant turning point for the business was in January 2010 when Fairlocks formulated their successful relationship with Belgium’s Covrex® Pool Protection and started supplying their unique range of foam filled insulated slatted pool covers. It’s a relationship which has blossomed over the last six years and Fairlocks have grown to become the largest Covrex® distributor worldwide. Covrex® pool covers are the ideal solution for level deck or infinity edge pools since their design allows them to roll out perfectly straight every time, without the need for guides which can easily get jammed in the pit. The swimming pool covers on offer make them very hard to turn down, especially for a trade customer working on multiple pools at any one time. They offer a standard five-year guarantee and also offers huge advantages over traditional PVC slatted covers in terms of insulation properties. In 2012, Fairlocks expanded further with the inclusion of the Flolux range of stainless steel push fit wall fittings. Flolux fittings are suitable for concrete pools, spas and other submerged areas; sit flush to pool and spa walls and floors; are designed for easy installation; and can be interchanged with existing PVC fittings. Another product added to the range to increase the number of products customers could buy from Fairlocks, through one service, on one account. Towards the end of the year, Carrie Woodward joined Fairlocks and now looks after all invoicing, credit control and oversees the day-to-day smooth running of the Oxford office. 2013 and 2014 saw a vast range of technology and innovation within the swimming pool products range at Fairlocks with the initiation of the Nemo cordless underwater drill – a product which solves so many engineering headaches when it comes to maintenance on a filled swimming pool. The award-winning drill works to depths up to 50m and operates at the same capacity as the traditional dry-land version. The Nemo range offered Fairlocks the opportunity to drive business to wider markets, while maintaining their key objective – to offer the best possible

products and services for their customers. With advanced technology and innovation high on the list of priorities for the products that the company supplies, Fairlocks teamed up with Water-Tec to offer significantly higher standard swimming Fairlocks’ Waterpool lighting that Tec Lighting was developed to be controlled remotely via a mobile or tablet. The pushfit range came in a variety of colours and met the demands of existing customers but also opened up new doors to customers who were interested in the new technology. The Mega Pool Saver variable speed controller for filtration pumps was also added to the Fairlocks Pool Products range, diversifying it further, but still offering exceptional benefits to customers. In 2015, Fairlocks invested in a new website to provide their customers with a ‘one stop shop’ for browsing the product range and learning more about the manufacturers. The new website also offers an aftercare service, providing customers with data sheet downloads and PDFs to ensure all information is conveyed to the customer. Fairlocks recognised that their customers needed a clear, easy to use, simple but effective website to browse and contact where appropriate. News and social media also gained momentum with regular content updates made about the industry and relevant material. One of the driving forces behind the exceptional customer service is Paul Webb. Paul is focused and strives for the best in the industry. He understands the challenges
of the market and pushes forward with innovation and product development to create a well-structured, exceptionally organised and diverse range of products to the swimming pool trade that is difficult to say no to. He is incredibly well known in the industry and once you meet him, he makes it his business to ensure you are satisfied with the service, products and delivery from the company. A combination of a great team, excellent products and exceptional manufacturers has made the business what it is. Add to that regular coverage in the trade press, annual attendance of the SPATEX trade show with an impressive stand plus numerous word of mouth recommendations, and it’s easy to see why after a decade the company is such as success and so well known across the industry. “I ordered some Covrex® covers for a couple of swimming pools that were being developed. I didn’t believe they were so efficient to install and Paul and his team made every effort to ensure the installation process ran smoothly and didn’t hold up any part of the build,” said one happy pool contractor from Oxford, comments which are typical of the feedback that Fairlocks receives. So what do the next ten years hold for the company? Well if the past decade is anything to go by, the trade should expect many more innovative products, all backed up by a team of dedicated and enthusiastic staff. “The team at Fairlocks would like to thank all customers for their loyalty and custom over the past ten years, and long may it continue. The team are always listening to our customers, and are working to make the swimming pool industry as good as it can possibly be,” said Paul Webb. Filtered Solutions For Pools And Spas Some of the most important products that lie at the heart of any efficient water cleansing system are those which are associated with filtration. And thanks to a number of recent innovations – which have lead to improved performance and a reduction in water use – filters and filter media are now the first place to start looking when it comes to combining effective water management and making significant cost savings. This issue, we take a closer look at the range of available filtration products that are on offer in this developing sector By Jon Wadeson
W
hen it comes to the filtration of water for swimming pools and spas, there really is a wide range of options available for an equally wide range of operating environments. Hidden away and previously seen as somewhat low tech when compared to other more glamorous products, the filtration sector has seen a number of new innovations recently and technology is playing it’s part in and providing new and improved solutions for what is without doubt, a critical part of any pool and spa setup. With improved performance comes the reduction of water use and in turn operating costs, so the advances in the sector are welcomed by all. With plenty of options already available, combined with an ever-widening range of emerging technologies and products, it can often be hard to stay on top of what’s on offer, so this issue we highlight just some of the filtration options.
sophisticated network of nanofibers exclusive to the product. This material enables particles as small as 5 to 8 microns to be filtered and prevents dirt from building up in the device. As a result, there is a significant improvement in the quality of water once it has been filtered. Maintenance is another of the device’s great advantages. The self-cleaning system on top of the main body features a lever which, when turned, aligns the filter in front of the tangential shower that is built into the unit, thus ensuring that the filter is properly cleaned. Moreover, this shower has been especially designed to spray the water used in backwashing evenly so that the whole surface of the filter is thoroughly cleaned. Finally,
ASTRALPOOL’S SELFCLEANING NANOFIBER PROVIDES FILTRATION EFFICIENCY AstralPool has added to its range of filtration systems for residential pools following the launch of its NanoFiber filter. The new selfcleaning device developed by the brand belonging to the Fluidra group has nanofiber technology and an operating system exclusive to the company, all of which ensures top quality filtered water in pools of up to 90 m3. With the aim of delivering a degree of filtration never seen before in the residential pool sector, AstralPool’s R&D team designed a

once the device has been backwashed, its initial settings, flow rate and pressure are restored. Physico-chemical tests were conducted by an external laboratory (Porometer NV) to analyses the effectiveness of NanoFiber’s filtration system. Following comparisons with other systems in the same category, the experts who conducted the tests stated that AstralPool’s mechanism filtered more evenly and thoroughly than all other models, which prevents limescale.
CERTIKIN’S OC-1 FILTER MEDIA REDUCES RUNNING COSTS Unlike traditional methods of filtration that use entrapment, Certikin’s OC-1 works through settlement. The new British manufactured filtration media has some exceptional benefits – by replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1, it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration system; filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and, most remarkably, significantly reduce running energy costs whilst still filtering to the equivalent standard. Some of OC-1’s outstanding key benefits include: • Reduces energy consumption – OC-1 maintains constant flow rates, even when the media becomes dirty. No downtime is required for heating/salt chlorinators/heat pumps going out on low flow. The constant flow means pumps can be run at lower speeds, thus saving energy. • Huge capacity for debris collection – OC-1 offers over 20 times the capacity of sand or glass. • Reduced requirement for backwashing and a more efficient backwash – reduces water consumption, chemical usage and heating. There is no need to backwash on start up with new installations. • Lightweight – Can even be shipped
SPN October 2016 45 28/09/2016 15:30
FILTRATION inside a filter, easy to handle and super quick and easy to install. • Less maintenance – lasts longer than sand, reduces pressure in the system, extending the life of equipment. • Payback typically 6-12 months.
Unlike traditional methods of filtration that use entrapment, Certikin’s OC-1 works through settlement
For the best savings OC-1 should be used with an Inverter. On an existing system, replacing sand or glass because of the free space of OC-1 you are reducing the head loss in the system allowing you to turn the speed of the pumps down to maintain the exact same turnover and velocity as before. This saving is usually in the region of 20% reduction in the speed of the pump that results in over 40% saving in electrical consumption.
MAGNUM CARTRIDGE FILTERS BENEFIT BOTH SPAS AND POOLS Pleated cartridges have been the filter of choice for spa pools for many years and New Zealand based Magnum Filters has been manufacturing them since 1982. Peter Hogg, owner of Spaeuro which supplies the UK and European market with Magnum cartridge filters said: “Over the years I have heard many arguments for and against using cartridge filters for swimming pool filtration and which is the best filtering media to use in a cartridge. “Recently cartridge filtration for swimming pools has become more and more common especially in the USA and Australia. One of the main reasons is water conservation. A standard Magnum Filter cartridge, which uses Reemay fabric for its filtering media, has a nominal micron rating is around 30 microns
Cartridges cannot be backwashed and have to be cleaned with a hose which takes far less water than the normal backwash.” A standard Magnum Filter cartridge, which uses Reemay fabric for its filtering media, has a nominal micron rating around 30 microns. However after the cartridge has collected dirt and debris, a dirt cake forms on the outside of the fabric. This dirt cake can then become a further filtering mechanism which results in finer filtration. It is conceivable that the micron rating can go down to as low as 3-5 microns. With the added advantage of having a large surface area you end up with a very efficient filter unit which maintains adequate flow that requires very little maintenance. However, there is an optimum surface area on any given size of cartridge where filtration is at its most efficient and it’s worth noting that some cartridge manufacturers push the boundaries and in doing so, have to add too many pleats, resulting in them being crammed together, so much so that the dirt and debris will not travel down the full depth of the pleat. This means that only a very small portion of the cartridge is filtering and premature blockage is inevitable. Something that’s never the case with Magnum’s products.
A RANGE OF FILTERS THAT CAN LEAD TO SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS Golden Coast offers a range filters for commercial and domestic applications which can save owners time, money and water. One such product, Waterco’s range of Micron Bobbin Filters, delivers
46 October 2016 SPN 45-48_SPN_Oct_2016_Filtration.indd 46
superior water filtration. Featuring a unique fishtail lateral configuration, the ingenious design eliminates the ineffective ‘dead areas’ commonly associated with traditional stardesign filters. That’s not all – this highly efficient design requires as much as 30% less water to backwash. Furthermore, a dual function drain/large sand dump port allows for easy winterisation and sand changes, while a large clear access lid ensures quick and easy servicing and inspections. Supplied complete with a side mount multiport and gauge, micron bobbins are available in 500, 600, 700, 750 and 900mm tank sizes with all tanks 700mm and upwards supplied with a 2” valve. Golden Coast offers a extensive range of filters from other leading manufacturers, including Darlly’s filters for spas. As the UK’s largest independent supplier of wet leisure products to the trade, Golden Coast are well aware that inferior filter cartridges are a major source of problems. Not only do they fail to give users the water quality and clarity that is so essential to the pool and spa experience but they are a false economy. A poor filter cartridge becomes clogged more quickly, needs more frequent cleaning and replacement, and risks damaging the circulation pump by restricting flow. Golden Coast’s Managing Director Jamie Adams says: “Whether you’re specifying for a pool, a spa, or a hot tub – residential or commercial – Golden Coast has the right filter for you, your business and your customer.”
MULTICYCLONE - CENTRIFUGAL WATER FILTRATION FROM WATERCO In addition to a wide range of fibreglass filters, one product that has been particularly well received by the industry

Hidden away and previously seen as somewhat low tech when compared to other more glamorous products, the filtration sector has seen a number of new innovations recently” MultiCyclone Plus combines centrifugal and cartridge filtration into one streamline housing, creating an ultra compact filtration system
over recent years is Waterco’s MultiCyclone range. MultiCyclones are a series of products that are capable of saving water and reducing filter maintenance and work on the basis of centrifugal water filtration. The MultiCyclone Filter and MultiCyclone Pro models have no moving parts to wear and tear and no filter media to clean or replace. Incoming water is guided by a diverter plate so that it enters multiple hydro cyclones tangentially, generating a strong centrifugal
effect. This spins the sediment out to the hydro cyclone’s wall and then spirals it down to the sediment sump, while the cleansed water spirals upwards. The MultiCyclones are ideal as a prefilter to extend the life of an existing filter. It will filter out up to 80% of the incoming sediment from a swimming pool. The unit works together with a variety of filter types to polish the water. It allows the installation of finer filtration systems, such as cartridge filters with finer cartridges and the sand filters with finer filter media. Finer filtration systems can be installed without the burden of extra maintenance. The pool water ends up clearer with less upkeep. MultiCyclone Plus and MultiCyclone Ultra filters combine centrifugal and cartridge filtration into one streamline housing, creating an ultra compact filtration system that can be vertically installed on a pool pump. The MultiCyclone XL70 is the commercial model of the range and like its domestic cousins, the XL70’s unique filtration system works onthe basis of centrifugal water filtration and is designed with no moving parts. An ultra compact system, the XL70 is an evolution of Waterco’s MultiCyclone technology and the company has specially created the commercial version by increasing its number of hydrocyclones to cater for the higher flow rates and redesigned it to cope with the demanding requirements of commercial installations.
NEW AND EXCLUSIVE – SUPERPOOL SAND FILTERS FROM SCP Whether it’s for domestic or commercial pools, SCP offer a wide range of filtration products from a number of brands including Haywood, Pentair, Pleatco and Waterco, but two of the newest additions to their extensive filtration line up are the new top and side mount sand filters from Superpool. These distinctive products feature a non-corrosive gel coat fibreglass tank and are available exclusively from SCP. The two smooth finished white models include a 6 way multiport valve, reliable and durable Gylcerine Pressure Gauge and air release valve. There are four sizes available ranging from diameters of 500 to 900mm

CASE STUDY OC-1 MAKES WAVES AT DARTMOUTH POOL The opening of the new Dartmouth Indoor Swimming Pool was a result of many years of hard fundraising by the local community. For installers, Westcountry Leisure, the new OC-1 filtration system, with its promise of reduced energy consumption and muchincreased efficiency, was a natural choice. Devonshire pool specialists, Westcountry Leisure installed the beautiful 25m swimming pool using Certikin supplied equipment and impressed with the claims of the new ground-breaking OC-1 filter media, felt that this would be an excellent occasion to put it through its paces. Embracing the recent advances in pump technology and maximising the benefits of variable speed pumps, the ingenious OC-1 works through settlement, as opposed to the traditional method of entrapment. By replacing commonly used media (such as sand and glass) with OC-1 Filtration Media it is possible to reduce the head loss in the filtration

system; filter with a constant flow (regardless of debris entrapment) and, most remarkably, significantly reduce energy costs as it can be used with a smaller pump or a variable speed pump or controller. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson, went into consultation with Westcountry’s Mark Gilpin and estimated that using OC-1 compared to sand would in terms of electricity consumption save 71.73kW per day, which over the year equates to 26,181.45 kW. Assuming a price of 12p a kW, this amounts to a massive saving of £3,141.77 each year! Mark Gilpin said: “To be honest, I am amazed at just how efficiently it does work and the results it achieves. I think it justifies the title of a revolutionary product.” Westcountry Leisure 01626 364927 www.westcountryleisurepools.co.uk

THE PLEATCO PURESTART® RANGE OF PRE-FILL FILTERS Pleatco, LLC, a leader in the science of filtration, recently launched Pleatco PureStart® Pre-Filters – a revolutionary product range scientifically engineered to overcome the problems associated with tap, ground and well water being used for filling and topping off pools and spas regardless of make, model or size. Available through Plastica, these new disposable sediment filter cartridges are made from unique melt-spun filtration technology for depth filtration water purification. PureStart® cartridges attach to a garden hose and capture dirt particles filtering the water before it enters into a spa or pool. “PureStart® cartridges provide filtration down to 5 microns trapping elements such as magnesium, iron and calcium deposits. This means less chemicals when starting up or rejuvenating a pool or spa. PureStart® filters are disposable and can be used to either fill or top off a body of water of any size,” said Richard Medina, SVP Engineering. Pleatco PureStart® filters come in two sizes. The smaller PPS2100 filters up to 10,000 gallons of water and is ideal for spas and hot tubs, splasher pools, above-ground pools, swim spas and
and the range accommodates flow rates of 10m3h to 32m3h. The filters feature a hose clamp allowing the valve to rotate 360° for easier connection and for the larger 750 and 900 mm models, a large diameter threaded cover and a swivel stem also enables the rotation of the filter during installation. All variants across the range come with a five year warranty on the tank and one warranty on the valve.
CERAMIFLO – AN IDEAL CHOICE FOR COMMERCIAL POOLS WITH LIMITED SPACE Total Pool Filtration has teamed up with the Danish Company Provital to market the revolutionary Ceramiflo swimming pool filtration system in the UK. The ceramic microfiltration system has already been installed in many pools across Scandinavia,
topping off large pools. This is the ideal product that a service pro or a pool or spa owner themselves can use with ease. The larger PPS6120 filters up to 40,000 gallons of water is mainly used by service pros for filling large bodies of water from above-ground pools to swim spas, to in-ground pools and sport facility pools. Plastica Ltd 01424 857802 www.plasticapools.net
with fantastic results. The successful application of membrane technology to swimming pool water has allowed Ceramiflo to gain an advantage over more traditional filtration methods such as sand and glass. The Ceramiflo system can consistently filter down to 3 microns, which is sufficient to improve any Cryptosporidium management strategy. As well as improved water quality, it offers many cost savings for potential new pools and existing pools. For potential new builds, installing a Ceramiflo system will help save on construction costs as it requires a much smaller plant room. This is a direct result of it taking up 30% of the footprint of sand filters and also its need for less headroom, a smaller balance tank and no backwash holding tank. In addition to this, significant savings can also be made on water and energy bills as a third of the water is needed
for the backwash. For existing pools, the Ceramiflo system is an ideal solution for plant rooms that are tight for space and where balance tanks are undersized. It is also straightforward and hassle-free to install and will create minimum disruption to the day-to-day management of the pool. Finally, the Ceramiflo system is very user friendly. All backwashing is fully automatic and every component of the filtration system can be controlled at the touch of a button on a computer or tablet device. In the unlikely event that any problems occur, engineers can login remotely to investigate, and in most cases fix the problem, without the need for a call-out.

TILED SPAS & SWIM SPAS
Tiled Finishes That Create Bespoke Spas For commercial facilities that require a compact luxury water experience with durability built in, it’s hard to beat a tiled spa or swim spa. With unique finishes combined with installation, flexibility and resilience, it’s no wonder these products are enjoying such success. Their bespoke nature has made them a hit for high-end domestic installations and designers love them too thanks to variety of options on offer. hen a customer is looking for a spa or swim spa, quite often more traditional off the shelf solutions just won’t do. For many, the need to have a bespoke solution is because something special is desired – a real one-off that makes a statement and that has the illusive ‘wow’ factor. For others, there is a need for a product that offers the ultimate in durability. Finally, there can also be a need for a bespoke solution when there are restricted access issues. Often, the solution for all of these challenges is a tiled spa or swim spa. Thanks to the wide range of luxury finishes, materials, styles and sizes on offer, the flexibility that these products provide will always leave more standard options trailing far behind. Whatever the requirement and use, the sector is one that offers numerous options to today’s discerning customers and despite it still being very much a niche sector, demand for tiled spas and swim spas has been equally strong across both the commercial and domestic markets. This issue, we take a look at some of the bespoke solutions that are on offer.
SPAS THAT COMES IN TWO PIECES (OR MORE!) One of the great USP’s of the Certikin tiled spa is that it can be delivered split into two, Working with Liverpool based supplier Rigo Spa Ltd, Certikin are able to tailor all options to suit a specification and décor. This applies to domestic, light commercial and heavy-use overflow applications

three, four and even eight sections! It’s the perfect solution for new build or refurbishment projects where access is a potential problem. This opens up the opportunity to replace or include a spa where previously considered not to be possible. The spa is rejoined on site by a highly skilled team and the joint hidden by tiling. All the spas come fully finished from the factory and can be tiled in a vast range of designs from 20mm mosaics to large format tiles or the customer’s own choice can be used. Their high specification includes water hydrotherapy jets for localised massage, air injectors for all over massage, an underwater light, a floating heat retention cover and full support leg kit. The number and arrangement of fittings can be installed in almost unlimited layouts in each spa, with the functionality double-checked by Liverpool based supplier, Rigo Spa Ltd. Highly versatile, the spas come in attractive round, square and octagon shapes. All the spas come fully tiled from the factory and in a choice of attractive glass mosaics. Alternatively, customers can supply their own choice of tiles. Certikin’s Commercial Manager, Steve Nelson said: “Everything can be tailored to suit a specification and décor, from the size, shape, number and type of jets and the choice of tiles and this goes for domestic, light commercial and heavy-use overflow applications. The possibilities are endless. “With Rigo as our supplier, we can provide an outstanding service for our customers and satisfy the requirements of the most demanding contract,” he added.

ENCLOSURES
The Ultimate Season Extenders
When it comes to enclosures, Certikin cater for every possible permutation including low level, high level, lean to, fixed and sliding options
This summer has proved once again that there’s only one way to ensure uninterrupted outdoor pool use in the UK – and that’s to cover pools up! For commercial and domestic pools around the country, an enclosure will provide year round swimming and in addition, will improve safety whilst reducing both maintenance and running costs. There’s no doubt that having one is an investment, but an enclosure means owners can maximise the potential of their pool. From the big to the small and to suit any pool, we take a look at the available options By Karen Witney
A
n enclosure lets swimming pool owners bring the outside in and its easy to demonstrate to customers the huge advantages that installing one brings. Static or telescopic, manual or motorised these super shelters are the definitive in practicality... and good looking to boot. Let’s face it, our summers are often ridiculously and disappointingly short and whist an outdoor pool is a fabulous addition to any garden or leisure facility, poor weather can swiftly spoil the fun and send swimmers running for shelter. But what if that shelter could be provided over the pool so that those enjoyable activities can continue uninterrupted? A pool enclosure is of course the answer. These attractive and versatile cover-ups are the perfect pool addition and as well as extending the season, they will also prevent heat loss, cut

down on chemical consumption and bar windblown debris from entering the pool, allow the owner time to enjoy their leisure time investment rather than spend precious extra hours on maintenance. Safety is of prime importance and an enclosure precludes access to children, pets or other uninvited visitors. Coming in many shapes and sizes and manufactured for use on domestic or commercial facilities an enclosure is the only option when rain threatens to stop play! Hot tub enclosures are equally attractive and like their more generously proportioned relatives they will add flexibility and protection. The exterior of the tub will benefit from the shelter an enclosure provides, shielding it from the elements and acting as a wind break. The glazing offers a level of privacy whilst still allowing users to enjoy surrounding views throughout the day and stargazing when the skies darken.
THE SECRET OF SUMMIT’S SUCCESS Summit Leisure are one of the UK’s leading suppliers and installers of telescopic and static swimming pool enclosures. With many hundreds of buildings under their belt throughout the UK, they supply and install buildings in both the domestic and commercial sectors. The secret of their success, according to Managing Director Graham Kelsey, is a combination of demonstrably the best product on the market plus a unique and incredibly diligent approach to customer service. The Summit Leisure Algarve Aqua telescopic building has an exclusive trackless design, which means that the company can install their enclosures without the need for any unsightly and potentially hazardous tracks or rails being fixed to the pool surround. This is a hugely important feature as pool owners often invest significant
SPN October 2016 61 28/09/2016 10:12
ENCLOSURES sums of money in their pool decks and don’t want them marred by anything which detracts aesthetically. Not only that, but the quality of their design, materials and production means that they can, uniquely, manufacture buildings up to an incredible 21m wide! Graham also says that the use of toughened safety glass, as opposed to polycarbonate, which can fade and craze, is another significant feature which buyers of Summit Leisure’s enclosures find especially beneficial. For the ultimate in luxury, any of Summit’s telescopic enclosures can be motorised to give completely automatic operation when both opening and closing the enclosure, at the touch of a button by wireless remote control! The real benefits of working with Summit Leisure are perhaps best extolled by one of their trade dealers. Ben Tiffin of XL Pools in Kent says they have many happy customers with Summit Leisure buildings over their pools. He said of working with Summit: “Graham and his team are very knowledgeable about enclosures and pools in general. Backed by a great product, the pool enclosures Summit supply and install are better than any other we have tried in the past. The level of detail in the specification and quotation documents provided by Summit is excellent and invaluable for both our customers and for XL Pools.”
A WIDE RANGE WHICH SELLS ACROSS THE GLOBE ALUKOV is one of the largest manufactures of enclosures in Europe. Not only do they offer the widest range of pool, spa and patio enclosures from one factory, but customers can also choose from low or medium height, free standing, lean-to or a completely bespoke design to suit end-user needs. The company is also a leader in innovation and development. Every year they come up with something new and improved to offer their clients which are located right across the globe. ALUKOV is also very particular about the quality of their products and the service they provide. In the UK, the company has

become very well known for their high quality materials, customer care and service. ALUKOV only use UV stable polycarbonate with a 15 year warranty that will not get brittle or change colour over the years, strong aluminium profiles are thermal powder coated and guarantee no chipping of the paint and high durability. The company’s main focus is enclosures with rails. The easy glide system ensures that the enclosure is safely connected to the ground rail and allows for the opening and closing of even large enclosures to be carried out by one person. This negates the need for a motorised enclosure as the sliding is incredibly easy and comfortable. They do however offer this option for customers who prefer automation. All ALUKOV enclosures can be moved in both directions, from left to right, from right to left or from the middle – there are no limitations. For safety the company have added locks on each segment to make sure no unauthorised person can enter the cover. ALUKOV offers a bespoke service to each and every client. Not only do they manufacture
the product, they have their own transport fleet and installation team who erect the enclosure within few hours – there is no third party involvement.
THE OPTIONS ARE ENDLESS FROM CERTIKIN The Certikin range of pool enclosures includes fixed models (with opening side windows) and various telescopic options. In fact, every possible permutation is catered for including low level, high level, lean to, fixed and sliding options. One of the most popular is Certikin’s flagship enclosure, the Endless Summer, which is fixed with sliding windows and comes in three different designs. A unique feature is the so-called ‘Iris’ end – an optional extra that is rounded in shape and has wide opening doors. The Orion is another stunning model that offers telescopic opening and closing without railings through the use of an extremely strong yet visually light-appearing structure. Aesthetically elegant, the enclosures are aluminium in structure with twin skinned polycarbonate walls. Any RAL colour is available including a unique wood style finish which allows the enclosure to blend into its natural environment. The enclosures are suitable for many applications (both commercial and domestic) and not just swimming pools and spas – indeed they can offer an outside ‘living’ room for any use. The easy to handle sliding doors can be locked so that the enclosure is not accessible to children. The lowest level moving Aquacomet enclosure is the sleek Horizontal, which is super flat and elegant. Custom made in widths from 4 to 6.4m and height from 0.4 to 0.8m, the Horizontal can be supplied and installed by Certikin with installation taking just half a day. Certikin offers a free site survey. Installation is optional to give full peace of mind, or supply only and guidance provided should it be preferred.

When it comes to access and installation, there are no issues as the enclosures are constructed on site using British fitters who don’t rush the job but pay attention to detail. Full planning and building regulations are taken care of and all projects are managed to ensure customer satisfaction. Large span enclosures are no problem and incorporating walls and buildings is easily achievable using glulam beam goalposts to enable a central or off centre beam for greater flexibility. For those with lesser needs, the company has other low mid height and high enclosures, with spa and hot-tub enclosures, retractable garden rooms and pool decks – something for all purposes and budgets. The low enclosures are the lowest available and are amongst a handful that feature interlocking sections – so large to smallest or smallest to large – no gaps, closed with a

So this year, visitors to the Birmingham show will see the introduction of outdoor furniture, hot tub screens, heating, spares, chemicals, pool covers, and other ancillary products. In addition to a wide range of great products on display, there will also be a series of free seminars and live debates running over the two main days. These include The Great Hot Tub Debate plus Technical and Aftercare forums which will be covering issues such as repairs, servicing, trends and failures. An area called ‘The Marketplace’ is also new this year and with its introduction, visitors can now meet many new companies and catch up with others that may not have exhibited in the UK for a while. This new area has a display and a central zone for attendees to have meetings with suppliers and secure the best deals for products.

Finally, Living Pool is the section of the exhibition dedicated to pool surrounds and the outdoor environment. It was created because Piscine Global wanted to bring together suppliers and buyers concerned by a fast-growing trend – the combination of swimming pool and landscape – and will appeal to visitors working in the private sector along with pool and spa professionals. With the market shifting in a big way towards landscaped and ‘decorative’ surrounds into which pools and spas are integrated, Piscine Global unveiled the Living Pool Exhibition in 2014, showcasing outdoor
furniture, composite wood terraces, outdoor lighting, pool decks, mosaics, flagstones and floorings in a dedicated area. In 2016 the exhibition will feature an area devoted to landscaping. Visitors can also attend lectures on subjects connected exclusively with pool surrounds and the outdoor environment. Special information will be published on these events, in particular via press releases and on the Piscine blog.
AN EXHIBITION COMMITTED TO INNOVATION AND EXPERTISE The meeting point for everyone involved in the swimming pool and spa market and the place where the big stories are written, Piscine Global is also a springboard for innovative companies. WORLD NEWS
NSPF Expands International Efforts The National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) has increased the delivery of pool and spa education around the world and since 1984, an outstanding 139 active NSPF Instructors outside the US have provided CPO® Certification opportunities in 97 countries and certified over 19,900 students. The non-profit organisation has accomplished much in 2016 in terms of bringing a higher standard of pool care to numerous countries. May was a busy month internationally and began in Barcelona with NSPF representatives and Consejo Superior de Normalización y Seguridad Integral en Piscinas (CNORSIP) members meeting with the governor from Tarragona, Spain. Evidence that minimum educational requirements help keep pools safer and encourage more people to live happier and healthier lives was presented to a roundtable of peers. Ishtvan Kokhan represented NSPF in Ukraine at Aquatherm Kyiv providing information on standards/requirements for public pools in the US and how CPO® Certifications can benefit operators, patrons, and facility owners. Kokhan had an incredibly active Q&A session which demonstrates that the Ukrainian pool industry is ready to grow and learn. Over 420 companies from 20 different countries joined Aquatherm and NSPF was on the forefront of providing answers to the eager crowd. NSPF held an Instructor Training Course in Puerto Rico recently. Students from Canada,
Dubai, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela became new NSPF Instructors. NSPF Instructor, Rudy Stankowitz, also held the first CPO Certification course in Guyana, South America. The director of engineering at the Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown wanted the custodial staff of eight to be certified for the country’s upcoming Golden Jubilee. “The CPO® Certification has such a long and incredible history in protecting swimmers at aquatic facilities throughout the world. I was extremely flattered at the opportunity to bring this programme into the country of Guyana,” stated Rudy Stankowitz, CEO and President, Aquatic Training & Consultants. “You could see the tremendous amount of pride and excitement on the faces of the individuals at this facility as they received their test results knowing that they were making swimming pool history in being the first in their entire country to earn this certification.” NSPF is continuing its efforts to impart pool care knowledge in Australia and Mexico too. An NSPF Instructor Course, CPO® Certification Course, and marketing seminar took place at the recent SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show held at the Gold Coast in Australia, with the Foundation also exhibiting. In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, The Asociación De Profesionales de la Piscina A. C. (APPAC) conducted for the fifth consecutive year, a CPO® Certification Course during the Expo Tecno Agua. NSPF has had a long standing

Fluidra And Holland’s SIBO Join Forces
Fluidra has announced that it has acquired 70% of Dutch firm SIBO, a leading company in aquatic installations and swimming pools with a major presence in the field of distribution in northern Europe, especially the Benelux countries. The incorporation of SIBO in Fluidra’s group will introduce new product category to its portfolio. SIBO is one of the international leaders in ponds and bio-pools with its brand AquaForte, which are biological or natural pools, an eco-friendly product that is on the rise in northern Europe, where it is calculated that one out of every ten new swimming pools is a bio-pool. SIBO has a 6,000 m2 headquarters near Eindhoven
(in the south of the Netherlands), thereby giving it access to different markets in northern Europe. This new location will enable Fluidra to improve its service to customers, especially those in the Benelux countries.

IN BRIEF APSP & NSPF BOARDS APPOINT MERGER FIRM The boards of The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) and the National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) have hired AH, a leading professional services firm to lead the unification process for the two aquatic organisations. AH specialises in helping non-profit organisations achieve their mission, create value, and advance their causes. President and CEO Bob Waller, CAE, stated: “This initiative will be extremely positive for the aquatics industry and we are excited to be partnering with the APSP and the NSPF on this unification.” The process is already underway with both organisations working closely to share documentation and meet important milestones on the process timeline. Rich Garbee, APSP Chairman of the board and G. Bruce Dunn, NSPF Chairman of the board jointly stated: “Both APSP and NSPF believe that AH is uniquely qualified to lead this effort. We expect to have a comprehensive plan by the first quarter of 2017 that will show how to maximise both organisations’ potential for the greater good of the industry.”
Largest Indoor Waterpark Looms For Russia Enduring a Siberian winter means suffering through long months of temperatures that regularly plunge into negative numbers. In the town of Tyumen, Russia, for example, the average temperature in January is -16.7°C (1.9°F). Even during the summer, weather remains cool. The average temperature in July is only 18.6°C (65.5°F). Residents of the Zarechny neighbourhood, however, will gain some welcome relief to their frigid climate when a new indoor waterpark – the largest amusement and health complex of its kind – opens next April. The burgeoning waterpark industry in Russia led Turkey’s Polin Waterparks to open an office in the country several years ago specifically to manage the development of these facilities and better serve the waterpark industry in the region. Now a leader in bringing waterpark attractions to the country, Polin’s previous installations include the Megacenter Gorizont Aquapark in Rostov-on-Don and Gorki Indoor Waterpark just outside Ryazan, H20 Waterpark and many more in different cities around the country. Plans for the futuristic facility include large translucent domes overhead to let in the sun, while wide expanses of curved glass hold back glacial gales. Palm trees will spread leafy fronds over guests relaxing and swimming within the warm,
temperate interior. While those elements might be incentive enough for many to visit the centre, the true attraction will likely involve less restful and more heart-pounding experiences – a variety of Polin’s most popular waterslides. A separate children’s area will be available for the youngest guests, and several large pools will offer more relaxed recreation, including a wave pool. Additional amenities at the facility will be a 170-room hotel and a complex of baths and saunas – about 15 different types, including Finnish, Scandinavian and Turkish options – that will take advantage of local mineral springs. Polin will be working with local investment group Sibentel on the facility which will be able to accommodate 5,000 visitors a day and anticipates as many as a million a year.
MADRID TO HOST FIRST PISCINA & WELLNESS FORUM
Passion Spas USA Sees Growth Despite Fire At European Headquarters
The Spanish Association of Pool Sector Professionals (ASOFAP) and Fira de Barcelona are organising the first Piscina & Wellness Forum on 3 and 4 November in Madrid. The event will include conferences, round tables, workshops and networking sessions to discuss the latest innovations, solutions, applications and trends driving the market of domestic and public swimming pools – including recreational and sports facilities – and the boom in the wellness and spa segment. Over 20 national experts are expected to take part as speakers to discuss topics of interest to the different stakeholders across the pool industry.
On 27 July, Passion Spas Europe – the largest spa dealer in Europe – experienced a devastating fire at their headquarters in the Netherlands. While no one was injured, the fire cost the company 65% of their massive facility. The fire damaged the majority of Passion Spas Europe’s 350,000 square-foot showroom, which included thousands of pounds worth of display spas as well as outdoor grills and kitchens, leisure furniture and accessories. The company’s manufacturing facilities and inventory of spas were not affected. A small, undamaged area of the showroom will soon reopen to customers, and a temporary headquarters has allowed the company to resume operations. As Passion Spas Europe continues to rebuild, the company’s North American sector, Passion Spas USA, is seeing extensive growth at its headquarters in Holland, Michigan. Though the fire impacted the operations of Passion Spas Europe, it did not negatively affect operations in the United States. The Passion Spas USA headquarters has expanded significantly in recent years, both in size of company, products sold and physical space. Six employees in both administrative and sales support positions help sell hundreds of spas throughout the nation while simultaneously serving local markets with the newly opened factory showroom in Holland.

OPINION
A Glass Half Full “I’m sure that I had quite a long list of things on my mind to worry about, and I am equally sure that someone stepping out from behind a van wasn’t one of them!” Golden Coasts’ Jamie Adams puts into perspective the challenges we all face from time to time in our personal and business lives
I
t’s easy to go through life being worried about stuff, isn’t it? But do we worry about the right things? Perhaps we would all be better off worrying a little less and looking on the bright side a little more. I’m not suggesting that we should all go through life whistling ‘Don’t worry, be happy’, while keeping our eyes tightly closed against the challenges that we face, the disadvantages that we might have to overcome and even the amount of effort we will have to put in to succeed. But if the world is divided into optimists and pessimists, I’m happy to say that I’m one of the optimistic ones. My glass is half full and my cup runneth over. I’m not sure that I’d go so far as to say that this is the best of all possible worlds, but it isn’t bad.
AS EASY AS RIDING A BIKE Four years ago I suffered an accident that was potentially life threatening and has been life changing. I’ve been a keen cyclist for years so it was an everyday thing for me to cycle to work. After all, it’s good for your health and fitness. As I passed a parked van, the driver stepped from the back into the road and the two sacks of logs he was carrying became a challenge that neither myself nor my bike could overcome. A broken back, neck and scapula put paid to much of what I had previously considered in my life as ‘normal’. Due to the skills, hard work and support of doctors, nurses and surgeons plus my family and friends, I have been pretty much put back together again. But it has changed me, and not just in that I now have enough steel in my shoulder that I can set off an airport metal detector at 20 paces. I think I appreciate things more. In particular I appreciate what it takes to rise to a challenge, to get past a drawback and to keep on trying when every fibre of your being is telling you to stop.
NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
GOING FOR GOLD I was addicted to the coverage of Rio 2016. When the Olympics came to an end my wife, Adele, and I always end up feeling a sense of loss having gorged for four weeks on the amazing efforts of athletes around the world. And, didn’t we do well. But 20 years ago, Britain came back from the Olympics in Atlanta with just one gold medal leading to a decision from the then Prime Minister John Major to start channelling lottery funds into sport. The only thing was, how was that money going to be spent? To a large extent it was the British cycling squad that showed the way forward with the theory of ‘marginal gains’. Make everything just a little bit better and the aggregated improvement will be huge. For 2016, Team GB had specialists looking at every performance aspect from the best way to improve sleep patterns to whether or not to shave pubic hair. (Yes, that’s true.) And of course ‘marginal gains’ has spilled over into business management, but the fact remains that in 1996 we won 26 less gold medals than we did this year due to a bunch of dedicated sportsmen and women and their coaches deciding that the challenge could be overcome. And it was.
Put aside what’s beyond your control and look at what is within your control. It isn’t about the challenges that you face; it’s about how you face those challenges” 84 October 2016 SPN 44_SPN_Oct_16_Opinion.indd 84
Once the razzmatazz of the Olympic circus leaves town, the real super humans enter the world stage. Well done Channel 4 for championing the Paralympics, and to the crew of the Last Leg for their irreverent humour on the subject of disability. As I write this, GB has already won an astonishing 95 medals at the Paralympics, 43 of them gold. That’s already more than we achieved at the same point in 2012. I’m amazed at the grit and determination that all of the competing athletes showed. In some small way, my accident and my long recovery has made me appreciate their achievements even more. And the Last Leg? Well they say that you should laugh in the face of adversity and those guys do. It’s so easy to turn drawbacks into excuses. It takes something special to turn those same drawbacks into something that spurs you on to success.
ALWAYS GET BACK ON YOUR BIKE So what is ‘normal life’ then? It’s something that is full of challenges and drawbacks and effort that needs to be made. Life, just like business, isn’t always easy but, as I said, for me it’s a case of looking at everything from a glass half full point of view. Put aside what’s beyond your control and look at what is within your control. It isn’t about the challenges that you face; it’s about how you face those challenges. This weekend I’m lucky enough to be cycling 100 miles to support CALM, a charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest cause of death in men aged under 45. People used to say, ‘count your blessings’ when I was a youngster – it’s still pretty good advice.
Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
