Since the last edition of SPN, the weather Gods here in the UK have remained kind to the industry, with decent, warm days lasting right up until the end of September. The 2018 season will certainly be one which is remembered fondly by the industry and beyond. After all, summers like the one we’ve just had are all too infrequent so I’m sure it’ll come as no real surprise that the Met Office confirmed what pretty much everybody knew and declared it as the joint hottest on record together with 2006, 2003 and 1976. For our industry though, the last few months have proven to be particularly beneficial with businesses being rushed off their feet meeting the increased demand of an overheating British public. Even rumblings concerning hosepipe bans weren’t enough to slow down wet leisure purchases, although thankfully, they never actually materialised – something which again benefited the domestic side of the pool and spa market.

With the holidays done, the kids now back at school and with the first few chilly mornings and nights making an appearance, it feels like the season finally has some closure and businesses are now using the time to reflect on an amazing summer. A Made To Measure Pool! Creating a deluxe pool for a restricted space can be challenging yet nothing has been lost in this SPATA award winning pool which was designed by London Swimming Pool Company and built in the narrow basement of a luxury London townhouse. The 9m x 3m and 1.7m deep pool is finished in iridescent deep blue Casa Dolce Chroma Eucalipto mosaic tiles; and bespoke honed quartz silver natural stone tiles are set around the pool, creating a touch of glamour and personalisation for the minimalist design. BROCKWELL LIDO SET FOR REVAMP Users of Brockwell Lido in south London can look forward to a better swimming experience after it was confirmed by operator Fusion, at a recent AGM, that a planning application has been submitted for a new pool lining and underwater lighting. Fusion have managed the Lido since 2007 having been awarded a 25 year lease for the Grade II listed pool. Planning for the upgrade will involve dialogue with both English Heritage and Lambeth Council – the owners of the art deco building. At the AGM, it was also reported that 2018 had been a record-breaking year since Fusion took on the lease. More than 330,000 visitors attended resulting in a 14% increase on the previous year. Much of this was down to the long and hot summer experienced by many across the UK.

PWTAG will be holding their annual conference on 4 December at Drayton Manor in Staffordshire and it promises to be a Tuesday to remember. There are some details still to be finalised, but one of the main events of the day will be the launch of a new book, ‘Hot Tubs in Business’. It’s the first of three spa books PWTAG will publish over the next year. The other two will be about commercial spas and domestic spas. PWTAG decided the book should be released first, as domestic-style hot tubs – perhaps badly chosen or installed, poorly maintained or wrongly used – can be lethal when they’re used for business purposes. There have been a number of outbreaks, including fatalities, linked to hot tubs in holiday park rental units, hotel bedrooms, holiday lets, on hire and even on display. The new book draws on the guidance in HSG282, but is supplemented by the expertise represented on this group and is presented in the clear and definitive fashion that the many thousands of readers of PWTAG’s ‘Swimming Pool Water’ have appreciated over the years. The future of Coventry’s nearest outdoor swimming pool is under threat as Warwick District Council looks to improve leisure facilities in the area. The council says replacing the lido at Abbey Fields in Kenilworth, which is used by many Coventry families during a warm summer, with a new indoor pool would allow swimming lessons all year round, plus increase revenue at the site. Dubbed a ‘gem’ by campaigners, a petition to save the pool has been signed by more than 3,000 people so far. The council will be consulting the public on all of the available options for the site with the results and costs for each being made available in December, however, the final decision will remain with the council.

World Leisure Saves Water For Village Hotels

Leyland-based swimming pool company World Leisure (UK) Ltd is set to reduce water consumption at four Village Hotels by an estimated 1.4 km3 (1,388m3) per year, providing significant water bill savings annually across the sites. The water savings will come from regenerative media systems fitted at Village Hotels in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Portsmouth, which save water by eliminating the need to backwash filters in comparison to conventional sand filters. World Leisure Managing Director Simon Smith said: “The basic difference between regenerative filters and conventional high-rate sand filters is the operating premise.

Sand filters use depth filtration while regenerative filters use surface filtration. “Comparatively, the regenerative filters incorporate about ten times the filter area of a similar-sized sand filter and the particles removed from the water are retained on the surface of fabric covered flex tubes. “Sand filter traps most of the same dirt particles deep in the media bed until backwashing is required and the process of lifting or fluidising the bed takes time and a huge amount of water to backwash out the collected particles. “With the regenerative filters, simply emptying the vessel releases the particles collected during the filter cycle.”

The regenerative filters fitted at Village Hotels are set to achieve an approximate average reduction of 347m3 litres of water per hotel in water dumped per year in comparison to sand filters, meaning sewerage and fresh water costs will be greatly reduced. Village Hotels National Operations Manager Andy Logan said: “Water usage is a massive issue environmentally, so the more we can do to save it the better. NEWS NEW FUTURE FOR WIGAN POOL The future for Hindley Community Pool in Wigan looks bright following a commitment to keep the pool open. As part of The Deal, to keep the facility open and enhance its services, it is being transferred to Wigan Council. A community group has been running the pool since 2013 but the group has now disbanded and a new direction for the long-term sustainability of the pool is now needed. Leader of the council, Cllr David Molyneux, explained: “Back in 2013 we were facing the enormous challenge of taking £160m out of the council’s budget and The Deal had only just launched. “We didn’t want to start shutting facilities so instead we began working with communities through The Deal to look at how we could support them to take over some facilities. “We are all in agreement that the priority is the continued operation of the pool and its future as a much loved community facility.”

NEW KIRKLEES LEISURE CENTRE GETS GREEN LIGHT A £15m leisure centre for North Kirklees has been approved and will feature an eight-lane 25m pool with seating gallery plus a fivelane 20m training pool with a movable floor. Kirklees Council has given the go-ahead for the new Spen Valley Leisure Centre which will replace the current Spenborough Pool & Fitness Complex which is almost 50-years old. The huge investment is the first major leisure infrastructure in the north of the borough for decades, but it comes at the cost of displacing current users of the swimming pool for two years.

Clarity Regarding ISPE-Endorsed Pool Plant Operator Training Since the publication of the ‘Swimming Pool Water’ book by the PWTAG in November 2017, there has been some confusion with regard to the suitability of ISPE-Endorsed Pool Plant Operator training courses. The following statement has been issued by the PWTAG to try to remove some of this misunderstanding (Source: PWTAG website www.pwtag.org. uk): “Training accreditation – The 2017 edition of Swimming Pool Water (page 33) recommends that pool operator training should be: ‘suitable and sufficient and should be accredited by the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG)’. Accreditation shows that the training meets the requirements of the Code of Practice. To clarify, training that is to the same standard as PWTAG’s, but is not formally endorsed by PWTAG, may also be suitable and sufficient. In

such circumstances, pool managers should satisfy themselves that the training provided incorporates the information in PWTAG’s training syllabus. It can of course include additional material.” While the PWTAG may recommend that all pool operator training for (public) pools be PWTAG-accredited, there are a number of other well-established training providers that are suitably experienced in delivering pool plant operator training that are not PWTAG accredited and are not required to be so. This was confirmed in answer to a question at the CIMSPA Conference in Kenilworth in February 2018, when an HSE

speaker replied “Training does not have to be PWTAGaccredited”. All ISPE-Endorsed Pool Plant Operator training providers have confirmed to the ISPE Council of Management that their training is kept up-to-date and is amended, as required, on a continuous basis, to reflect lead body guidance and new Regulations and Standards that are introduced, including but not limited to, the new PWTAG CoP and the new PWTAG book. Therefore, all ISPE-Endorsed Pool Plant Operator training can be recommended to meet all your pool plant training needs and keep you compliant with current guidelines. With another busy season expected, The Lido’s management team were looking at ways to improve the water quality for its visitors on a dayto-day basis. After some initial discussions with the senior staff, CPC were tasked with submitting and installing a suitable dosing system to help perfect the popular Lido’s water quality on a day-to-day basis. It was proposed that to

maintain this challenge a new generation hth® Easiflo briquettes feeder would be installed. Once running the Lido’s staff have benefited from the new system’s constant monitoring and response, taking away the need for regular hand dosing of chlorine. Council Improves Access To Swimming Pools With New Poolpods Enjoying a swim in the pools at Omagh Leisure Complex and Fermanagh Lakeland Forum has become much easier for people with restricted mobility with the installation of a new Poolpod at each venue. The Poolpod project was delivered by Disability Sport NI in partnership with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and funded by the Department for Communities through Sport NI. Speaking about the Poolpods, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton said: “One of the key themes of the Fermanagh and Omagh 2030 Community Plan is to ensure the physical, mental and emotional well-being of everyone in the district. “Inclusivity is at the heart of that theme. Through working in partnership with Disability Sport NI, the Council has striven to improve access and inclusion to sports facilities and programmes for all people across the district. “The pods will enable people with disabilities or mobility issues to access the pools in a dignified and relatively straightforward manner.” Kevin O’Neill from Disability Sport NI, said: “The facilities that have received the

This project is part of the wider District Council Disability Sports Hub Project which recently saw a significant investment into disability sports equipment in every council area.” Both Fermanagh Lakeland Forum and Omagh Leisure Complex are accredited ‘Inclusive sports facilities’. The installation of the Poolpods is part of a recent overall investment of over £150,000 in the creation of Disability Sports Hubs at both Fermanagh Lakeland Forum and Omagh Leisure Complex, in partnership with the Department for Communities and Disability Sport NI.

Plans for a brand new £29m swimming and leisure complex for Eastbourne have been given the go-ahead by Cabinet councillors. The bigger revised scheme to replace the existing Sovereign Centre includes eight lanes in the main pool, 204 spectator seats, a training pool with diving boards and a new ‘Clip & Climb’ facility. Original plans have been revised after consultation with Eastbourne Swimming Club and Eastbourne Disability Involvement Group to enable a wider range of people to use the new facility. Reasons for the increased cost of the complex include a bigger floor area due mainly to a bigger main pool, more spectator seating, allowance for CCTV drown detection system and inflation costs. Other attractions in the complex will include a fun pool with wave machine, eight lane 10-pin bowling, children’s splash area, soft play area, a café and two party rooms. There will also be a lift and Changing Places room to provide facilities for disabled users. Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Tourism and Leisure Services Councillor Margaret Bannister said: “We have listened to Eastbourne Swimming Club and believe this is a bigger and better revised scheme that will give Eastbourne a top-class theme destination. Oh We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside! With a huge bay and stunning sandy beach, Gorleston-on-Sea lies just to the south of Great Yarmouth and features a number of child-friendly attractions. One of which was a paddling pool, but having been built in the 1960s, it had reached the end of its serviceable life. The paddling pool had been well-used and the challenge was to install a modern aquatic facility in Gorleston that would thrill its visitors and withstand the test of time. Following a procurement process, Great Yarmouth Borough Council awarded the design and build contract to Ustigate Waterplay in April 2018. Gorleston’s Splashpad could not have been installed in a better year with the summer of 2018 being the hottest on record since 1976! The Splashpad consists of 38 products altogether, all programmed to run on a sequence that lasts approximately 20 minutes. During hours of operation, the aquatic play can also be activated by touching a button on the inclusive bollard or by touching a choice of two activation pads on the surface. Who Doesn’t Want To Be A Mermaid? Complete Spas has their very own mermaid, and that’s official! BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) Snorkel Instructor Hayley Keen has recently been crowned Miss Mermaid UK Worcestershire and is looking forward to the UK national finals. Hayley had always dreamed of becoming a mermaid since a young age and got the chance when she bought an outfit a couple of years ago, there was just a small problem – she wasn’t a strong swimmer and hadn’t even snorkeled before, let alone with a mono fin. So Hayley took to Facebook to ask if there was anywhere that she could practice with her new outfit. Evesham Sub Aqua Club’s Training Officer, Complete Spas Owner and current BISHTA Chairman, Pete Grinnall replied, saying they would be glad to have a wannabe mermaid join them on their club night and give her a few pointers and was soon offering Complete Spas help with the sponsorship of the pageant. Pete Grinnall remarked: “Hayley fitted into the club straight away, her ‘I’m a mermaid get over it attitude’

made us all smile.” So much so Pete asked her if she would be interested in the BSAC snorkel course, she agreed and within a few weeks Hayley was a qualified snorkeler. Progressing on from that, this February Hayley attended BSACs SITCA 2-day course, passed with flying colours and is now a recognised BSAC Snorkel Instructor. IN BRIEF SPLASH! 2018 ACHIEVES A RECORD ATTENDANCE Australia’s SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show has raised the bar for events held in the region. After a move to larger, more modern facilities at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre in 2016, this year’s event proved to be even bigger than that recordbreaking show. Lindsay McGrath, CEO of SPASA Australia, advised he was very pleased with the first SPLASH! under SPASA ownership, and said: “SPLASH! 2018 has been a fabulous show – and we have the support of the industry to thank for that. There was increased supplier participation and the attendees turned out in droves – on the first morning the lines went all the way back to the escalators and overall there were more visitors than any previous Australian pool and spa trade show.” This year’s trade show featured more than 120 exhibitor stands and took up three halls plus a lobby and outdoor terrace. Space sold out early, meaning there is likely to be an expansion in 2020. The 2018 show had the largest number of attendees ever, with total visitor numbers coming in just under 3,000 – up 22% on the 2016 figure.

CARVIN DIGIOVANNI TO STEP DOWN FROM ASSOCIATION ROLE After 28 years of leading APSP’s efforts developing technical standards, Carvin DiGiovanni has announced he is stepping down from a full time role at the end of the year, becoming part time from January. The change will allow him to move on to new challenges and opportunities. EVA LEDs Ensure The Perfect Fit When Slagen + Koenis architects began developing plans for two swimming pools at Den Bessem in Mortsel (the Netherlands), they envisioned connecting swimmers with nature and the pool itself through the clever use of light. Its lighting design, featuring large circular and oval LED units, was key to the project’s success. However, there was a problem: no one offered them in the marketplace. Having worked closely with Dutch LED pioneers, EVA Optic, for more than a decade, the project’s specialist technical consultant at Hellebrekers knew who to turn to for help: its Managing Director, Jan van Loon. He said: “When something piques my interest, I tend to dive right in. And this was no exception. After a great deal of research, we found a method of engineering the LED’s diameter to suit any project. Importantly, we can do this based on the amount of light required or the area where it will be installed.” EVA Optic, whose products are available in the UK exclusively through Golden Coast, engineered more than 30 bespoke light fittings for the project.

While the large pool area features 21 circular units measuring 2.3m in diameter and eight ovals, a further two oval lights have been installed in the restaurant. The new units form just a small part of the leisure centre’s new, fully integrated lighting system from EVA Optic. It is designed to meet the comprehensive needs of sport halls. The system allows for individual lights to be controlled remotely – ensuring lighting is on only when and where needed. In its larger pool (25 x 14.5 m), ten white EVA A12 underwater lights illuminate the pool with quality light, whilst the smaller 12.5 x 7m pool is flooded with colour from six RGBW EVA A12 underwater lights. Tropical Skyscraper Incorporates Stunning Pools The Oasia Hotel in the central business district of Singapore is by any standards, a unique project, and redefines what a high-rise can be in humid tropical climates. In contrast with the conventional, completely sealed-off, air-conditioned tower, this hotel, designed by local office WOHA, merges architecture and nature, and combines indoor and outdoor spaces in a striking fashion. The tower, which has a height of 190 metres, contains four large outdoor spaces: three enormous verandas on the 6th, 12th, and 21st floor, as well as a roof terrace on 27th floor. This roof terrace is surrounded and protected by a ten-storey-high screen, covered in the same red aluminium mesh cladding as the rest of the tower. This facade will gradually be overgrown by 21 species of creepers and vines, creating a lively contrast between vibrant reds and lush greens. Spanish designer and architect Patricia Urquiola, was responsible for all interiors as well as the outdoor spaces of the hotel. Urquiola adds a breezy elegance to WOHA’s delightfully quirky architecture. Three of the floors feature pools and each has a different character. On the 21st and 27th floors, Urquiola has used Agrob Buchtal tiles from the Chroma series. The pool on the sixth floor is part of a gym. On the 21st floor, the pool acts as a stylish extension of the lounge club. Left and right of the pool itself, which is tiled in a light and dark blue chevron pattern, is a wading pool, just deep enough to get your feet wet while sipping a cocktail. The rooftop pool consists of two parts, on either side of the rooftop restaurant. Unlike most rooftop amenities in hotels, which are all about the panorama, here the city’s skyline is almost completely concealed. Instead of a view, this rooftop offers a place of unexpected intimacy and tranquillity, a surprising escape from the bustle of the city.

Fluidra Goes For Gold In Indonesia! Fluidra, the multinational group listed on the Spanish stock exchange, has been awarded the contract to rebuild the Aceh Aquatic Center pools in Jantho, Indonesia, worth €1.4m. Fluidra Engineering will implement the project design and supervise the installation. The project will include the construction and installation of an Olympic -size pool, together with three smaller pools. Fluidra will install the Skypool from AstralPool which includes a short panel system, liner, filtration and disinfection together with competition equipment including Duraflex springboards. The centre will host the 13th PORA Games from 18 to 25 November 2018, a popular national competition in Indonesia in which more than 4,500 athletes from 23 districts across Aceh will take part. In addition to swimming, there will be

competitions in at least 12 other sports including badminton, football and cycling. The project is another example of Fluidra’s importance in aquatic competitions in Asia. The company was also the official supplier tasked with installing the four pools for the aquatic disciplines of the 2018 Asian Games held from 18 August to 2 September in the cities of Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia. In Malaysia, Fluidra

installed and designed six pools for the 19th Sukma Games. These exciting developments in Asia complement Fluidra’s activities in the rest of the world, such as the construction of the Olympic pool at the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, Spain held between 22 June and 1 July. These notable-high-profile projects clearly demonstrate Fluidra’s expertise in the global commercial pool sector.

NSPF® ENDORSES MODEL AQUATIC HEALTH CODE ADOPTION The National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®), has released a position statement recommending that all state, territory and local health departments; aquatic facilities; and the industry at large in the USA evaluate and adopt all or part of the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC), with the objective of protecting the future of aquatic facilities along with their staff and patrons. The USA’s only all-inclusive model pool code, the MAHC is based on scientific data and best practices gathered by public health and aquatics industry experts, making it more expedient for jurisdictions to justify, adopt and implement. Unlike legislation, the MAHC is voluntarily adopted, wholly or in part, and driven by expertise.

Brand Removed From Internet Sales In North America Zodiac have announced it will prohibit the online sale of all Jandy Pro Series equipment in the USA and Canada effective from 1 January 2019. Under its new ‘Trade Series Exclusive’ policy, the company has identified all of the products that are not to be sold online, which includes more than 400 Jandy Pro Series branded products, plus select Polaris and Zodiac branded products. The company said it had adopted the policy in order to protect and strengthen its reputation and brand image, plus it had been designed to encourage traditional retailers, builders and service providers to invest both in promoting the company’s products and in educating consumers about those products. The penalty for violating the policy includes refusal to sell TSE products and withholding of earned loyalty or rebate incentives. It aims to

enforce the policy aggressively. Furthermore, Zodiac will not provide a manufacturer’s warranty on Jandy Pro Series equipment purchased online through any internet retailer as indicated in a new Jandy limited warranty. The company now requires that all Jandy equipment be installed and/or serviced by a qualified pool professional. A label specifying this will be applied to all Jandy Pro Series equipment packaging. The company says it will monitor the internet 24-7 and encourages pool pros to report policy violations.

This makes it the oldest existing aquatic business in Australian history – a fact that is close to the minds and hearts of all its team members and distribution partners. Knowledge And Feedback Are Key In A Changing Industry After a long and busy summer, that’s been great for the industry, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights the events set to follow the SPATA and BISHTA annual conferences

ongratulations to the swimmers and divers at the recent European Championships in Glasgow and also in Dublin. There were many superb performances to take note of, and aquatic sport in the UK appears to be alive and flourishing. Talking of Europe, EN 17125, the European Standard for Domestic Spas, Whirlpool Spas and Hot Tubs is due out before the end of the year. The Standard will be available to purchase from BISHTA and SPATA with a 20% discount (once the price is confirmed) and for SPATA members, it will be added to the BSOL package at the renewal of the service in April. By the time you receive this edition of SPN the annual Information and Networking days for SPATA and BISHTA will have taken place on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 October, respectively. SPATA’s annual day focussed on the latest British and European Standards and updates on SPATA Standards. A session on Managing H & S – protecting your employees, sub-contractors, clients and yourself – was held and with the help of our friends at Wright Hassall, there was also a session exploring some key items to have, as part of your terms and conditions to protect you. With so many changes occurring in our industry, one of the sessions provided an update on industry guidance and regulations which gave members brief updates on the relevant information that they need to be aware of, such as HSG 179 on ‘Managing Health & Safety in Swimming Pools’. The final session looked at networking opportunities in Europe and across the world. The UK has a role in both

the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA) and the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA) and time was spent discussing how SPATA members can benefit from these networks. For BISHTA’s annual conference, there was an update on what is in the European Standard EN 17125 plus any key changes to BISHTA Standards. Hampshire County Council Trading Standards were welcomed back to explore how they can assist members to deal with customers fairly and comply with the Law. There was also a session on ‘Improving Workforce Education’ and this explored the various training opportunities now in place and what is planned for the coming years, including at SPATEX. The final session looked at H & S and key regulations, such as HSG 282 and the Electrical Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) – 18th Edition. More detailed information from both the SPATA and BISHTA annual days will be available in our pages within the December edition of SPN. Both BISHTA and SPATA members are also members of the BSPF, and the BSPF AGM is due to be held on Tuesday 20 November in Andover. Feedback on the BSPF will be sought at both the BISHTA and SPATA annual information and networking days and will then be shared at the BSPF AGM, overseen by BSPF President, Will Dando. SPATA will be holding some seminars at various locations (including online) in November and December to update members on numerous topics of interest. Benefitting The Whole Industry – The SPATA And STA Partnership In this edition, we highlight the benefits of the strengthening partnership between SPATA and STA and how the relationship is benefitting the UK pool and spa industry

n the last issue of SPN (August 2018) Luke Griffiths, Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) at STA’s awarding organisation’ Safety Training Awards, shared how they have been working together with SPATA on a new Swim School Factsheet, which had been promoted at a series of STA Roadshows around the country. Luke also mentioned how the STA had been working with BISHTA to revamp a Hot Tub Site Surveyor’s course to provide more entry-level training for the industry. In this issue, it is SPATA’s turn to mention some of the other areas where strengthening the partnership between SPATA and STA is to benefit the pool and spa industry, by providing more opportunities for staff to attend suitable courses and where applicable, to gain qualifications. STA are long-standing members of the BSPF and with their expertise in offering Pool Plant Operations (PPO) qualifications, this is an area where a number of pool companies have recognised the value of having their staff trained on these three day courses. Steve Hallam at David Hallam Ltd regularly sends his new staff on the three day PPO course because he believes that the training is invaluable to keep up to date with the advice offered to the industry. “When our staff turn up on site, it is vital that we have received the same information on the PPO courses as that being attended by the leisure centre and hotel staff to ensure that we can best help our clients by knowing what they have been told.” Other SPATA members have chosen not only to attend the PPO courses as candidates, but then to become tutors, so that they can deliver the courses themselves. One such example is Nigel Brawn at Cornwall Pools. “We have a number of commercial clients and to add value to the services that we offer (and also due to our location) we wanted to ensure

that good quality information was available for the leisure centres, hotels and holiday parks in our county. Having attended the PPO tutor training, we regularly run courses, due to there being a very high demand.” Alan Jackson, Director of Alzach (who are also SPATA members) have recently gained Approved Training Centre (ATC) status with Safety Training Awards. Alan has been tutoring STA pool plant courses for the last 12 months and has a long history working in the pool industry, having run his own business for 20 years, both installing and retailing pools. He started his career in education, working in schools and colleges before joining the wet leisure industry. He taught on the HND in Leisure Management and then the ILAM Certificate. He also has a Level 6 NCRQ Diploma in Occupational Health. The key learning points / outcomes for candidates on the PPO course are: • Principles of healthy and hygienic pool water • Principles of pool water testing • Principles of disinfection, pool chemistry and dosing in pool plant operation • Principles of mechanical pool plant operations • Swimming pool heating, ventilation and energy efficiency • Management, practices and health and safety in pool plant operations.

The significant benefit of choosing an STA pool plant qualification is that they are able to offer a CIMSPA endorsed and Ofqual regulated Level 3 Pool Plant Operations qualification (in addition to their two Level 2 qualifications in Pool Water Testing and Swimming Pool Water Treatment). With the increasing popularity of spas and hot tubs in the UK, there’s been a need to provide specialist training to those working in this sector. In this issue, we take a closer look at two dedicated courses being provided to BISHTA members plus others from across the industry

hile it may be true that water and electricity do not mix, training courses on these two important subjects have been proving very popular with the industry. These courses are vital to promote continuing (or continuous) professional development (CPD).

WATER HYGIENE MANAGEMENT COURSES Since BISHTA revamped the water hygiene management syllabus in 2016, the training teams at CPC (lead by Martin Rigby and Matt Roberts) and at Pollet Pool Group (lead by Jimmy Lamb) have provided over 70 courses, training 550 people. The course covers the following topics: • Types of spas and hot tubs • Why does water need to be treated and filtered? • What can grow and how to kill it • Products for water treatment • Sanitisers • pH and Water Balance • Risk Assessments • Testing • Record keeping • What happens when it all goes wrong? • Practical water testing • Trouble shooting tips • Health & Safety advice, including the storage, safe handling and use of chemicals • Insurance. There is also a written test paper that must be successfully passed. Not only have BISHTA members been receiving water hygiene training, but a large number of other companies in the industry have too (some from SPATA and a number who were not members of either trade

association). It has been very rewarding then to see some of these companies deciding to join BISHTA as a result of their training. BISHTA can not only call upon CPC and Pollet for water hygiene management tutors, but also Howard Gosling (Pool & Spa Advice) who has been training companies as part of their BISHTA membership application criteria since the formation of BISHTA. Following a tutor training day earlier this year other companies have shown their interest in becoming water hygiene management tutors and it is hoped that there will soon be more tutor teams involving Lonza and 1 Stop Spas. Any company looking to arrange their water hygiene management training should contact BISHTA, or discuss their training needs with any of the tutor teams, as it is vital that relevant staff have received training, including refresher training if the original course was attended more than five years ago.

ELECTRICAL COURSES Although not as many people have attended the electrical courses (compared to the water hygiene management courses) there has still been an excellent response to these courses tutored by Dave Roydhouse and Kevin McLaren from NICEIC. From nine different courses, there have been 88 candidates successfully passing either the two day workshop (with the option of a follow up one day assessment) or a three day combined course. The two day workshop has been designed to give individuals an awareness of the requirements of safe isolation and an overview of how safely to disconnect and connect hot tubs electrically, including commissioning, testing and recording requirements. The workshop is ideal for individuals looking to work on or install a hot tub into

an existing connection unit as part of a fixed electrical installation. There are no formal entry requirements to attend the workshop but previous electrical site experience would be an advantage to assist in understanding the content of the course. Attendees will learn the theory behind how safely to isolate an electrical installation, or part of it. The course covers key work areas including domestic, commercial installation, and connection to plumbing/non-electrical equipment with an electrical connection. The electrical courses explore the importance of safe isolation to protect staff working on the hot tub and then the course outlines the relevant parts of the Wiring Regulations (more formerly known as BS 7671). Based on feedback from the NICEIC, BISHTA is in agreement with this electrical contracting body to communicate the importance of using suitable earthing arrangements (including earth electrodes, where applicable) to ensure that transmitted faults from the house cannot find their way to the hot tub. There is a test paper to check on knowledge obtained on the course to satisfy the safe isolation aspect of the course and also the wider knowledge gained during the workshop. An extra day can be added to the course (either in a block of three days, or as a follow up to the two day course) in order to assess the testing and inspection section covered in the two day course to elevate the course into an accessory replacement equivalent qualification on hot tub final connections on single phase circuits.

SPATA Regional Seminars As we head towards the end of the year and what is for many in the pool trade a less hectic period, SPATA Regional Seminars are a great opportunity for members to increase their knowledge and compare notes on what has been a busy 2018

PATA will again be holding some seminars at various locations around the country (including online) in November and December, to update members on numerous topics of interest. There will also be an Open Forum for members to raise issues important to them. The purpose of these get-togethers is to meet fellow SPATA members, share ideas and network so that there is a vital two-way flow of information from companies to their trade association. The events can also be used to build up CPD points for the annual training targets set for 10 hours per company. The venues are often hosted at member premises, and SPATA is very grateful for the generosity of these members. This time David Hallam, Calorex, Cannings , Pollet Pool Group, and SC have agreed to open up their facilities, and for members attending the event in Rotherham, there is the promise of a fish and chip supper afterwards! A MASTERCLASS SPATEX is a feast for the eyes and a treat for the brain! STA POOL PLANT – BREAKPOINT CHLORINATION

TA pool plant tutors have long advocated the importance of maintaining low levels of combined chlorine and breakpoint chlorination in swimming pools, spa baths and other water based leisure facilities. Recent studies have served to support this further by highlighting the potential risks to people in the pool and pool hall if the formation of the by-products produced when using chlorine as a sanitiser are not controlled correctly – hence the importance of training and knowledge. The chart on the right illustrates how, when free chlorine is added to pool water, it reacts with pollution from bathers such as ammonia found in sweat and urine. This ammonia reaction in the water forms other by-products, known collectively as chloramines. Chloramines are measured as combined chlorine, and the chloramines can reduce the effectiveness of free chlorine. As more chlorine donor is added, the combined chlorine continues to rise, then drops once the free chlorine is sufficient to neutralise the combined chlorine. The bottom of the dip is the breakpoint where (theoretically) the free chlorine has neutralised the combined chlorine, including the ammonia base contamination. Now the level of free chlorine is sufficient to neutralise combined chlorine, the free chlorine can rise. To summarise, breakpoint chlorination is achieved when the free chlorine has oxidised out the contaminants in the water. The level of free chlorine should be at least twice the level of the combined chlorine, and combined chlorine should be maintained below 1mg/l; the pool water must also be at the correct pH, ideally between 7.2 and 7.4.

RECENT STUDIES To quantify some of the theory discussed earlier and further highlight the importance of maintaining low levels of combined chlorine two studies have recently been published which highlight the potential risks (for full details of each of the studies, see the links to the right of this page). Central in April 2018. The study which was conducted in Sweden aimed to investigate the risk of asthma onset among children in relation to individual trichloramine exposure. (Trichloramine is one of the compounds formed during the degradation process of ammonia and is destroyed with further reactions with free chlorine, providing breakpoint is achieved.) The study by Anderson et al concluded after adjusting for possible confounding factors, they found a significantly increased risk of pre-school onset asthma from indoor swimming pool exposure, especially in children with atopic predisposition. The second comes from a journal that was published in Science Direct by McMaster et al, which was brought to my attention by STA pool plant tutor’ John Monaghan. The study came about as it has been suggested that swimming in heated indoor swimming pools in the first year of life is associated with the development of spinal deformity in children. It focussed on the inhalation effects of by-products from chlorination of heated indoor swimming pools on spinal development in pup mice. McMaster et al explored in pup mice whether exposure to certain disinfection by-products found in heated indoor swimming pools (nitrogen trichloride (NCl3), cyanogen chloride (CNCl), and chloroform) would affect the future development of the spinal column. The study concluded that exposure of pup mice in the first 4 weeks of life to identifiable gases found in heated indoor swimming pools, is associated with the development of a hyperkyphosis in the sagittal plane of the spine. Following exposure to the gases there

was a latency period of 6 weeks before the deformity developed. This raises the possibility that early exposure of infants to heated indoor swimming pools may have a later effect on subsequent spinal development.

SUMMARY It is not the intention of this article to put people off taking their children or babies swimming, but instead to highlight to operators the impwortance of monitoring and maintaining low levels of combined chlorine. As well as the water treatment system itself, training and knowledge is key for operators to provide comfortable and safe bathing. Sulphate – The Hidden Menace In this edition, the water testing experts at Lovibond Tintometer take a closer look at the issue of sulphates in pools – how they get into the water, how to monitor them and what level is acceptable

ulphates occur naturally in most water including tap and, therefore, source water. In a swimming pool, if levels are allowed to rise, this can cause problems as they can attack cementitious grout and cement causing erosion and ‘pitting’. High levels may also cause irritation to the eyes and skin. Therefore, it is essential that sulphate is monitored on a regular basis and an appropriate action plan is in place should levels rise above an acceptable limit.

HOW DOES SULPHATE GET INTO THE WATER? As water runs through rock formations that contain sulphate based minerals, some of the sulphate will dissolve into the groundwater. Therefore most sources of ‘fill’ water for pools already contains a level of sulphate. In addition to this, some of the chemicals used in the everyday running of the pool, such as sodium dry acid (sodium bisulphate) or sulphuric acid, also contain an element of sulphate which can add to the problem. Continual use of these, along with a poor backwash regime, can quickly lead to levels becoming out of control, causing permanent damage to the structure of the pool, whether for public or private use.

HOW DO I MONITOR SULPHATE LEVELS? A sudden rise in the level of Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) can indicate an increase in sulphate levels. It is therefore recommended that a weekly TDS check should be carried out. TDS can be measured simply using a compact, easy to use handheld meter. Most meters will store up to 25 results including the date, time and temperature information for each result. A backlit LCD display will show the results and temperature simultaneously, with additional information including date and time on keypress, making accurate measurements simple. Additionally, sulphates can be measured directly using easy to use test kits based on a photometer, tablet count methods or the turbidity method. Ideally a specific sulphate test should be carried out weekly alongside

the standard TDS measurement, especially if the TDS results are fluctuating. For public pools, it is highly recommended that the photometer method is used. There is a two-minute reaction period but, on completion, the measurement takes place automatically and the result, in mg/l sulphate, appears on the display. As with all photometer methods, the results can be stored and shared easily. Alternatively, especially for water with a low total hardness content, the tablet count method may be used. This is based on the titration technique. Tablets are dissolved one by one in a known volume of liquid until a colour change occurs. A calculation is then used to determine the concentration in mg/l or ppm. Finally, and particularly for private pools, the proportional turbidity test method may be used. This is based on a double tube assembly. The outer tube is filled to the top line with sample water. A tablet is added to the water in the tube, crushed and mixed thoroughly to make a turbid solution,

indicating the presence of sulphates. A black dot on the base of the inner tube is lowered, slowly filling with the cloudy sample water. Viewing from above, the inner tube is submerged until the dot is just no longer visible. At this point, the result can be measured using the scale on the tube.

WHAT LEVEL OF SULPHATE IS ACCEPTABLE? Ideally levels should be as low as possible but the PWTAG guideline states that readings should not go above 360mg/l. If readings go above this level, immediate action should be taken to reduce the amount of sulphate. This would normally be through dilution by the addition of fresh water. It is recommended, however, that the source water should be checked first in case this is, in itself, the cause of the problem. Furthermore, if the problems persist, a review of the chemicals being used should be undertaken to see if these are adding to the problem. If high levels are not addressed, then grout and cement can be attacked which could lead to structural problems. ver the past 18 years Water Treatment Products has grown to be a foremost specialist in the recreational water treatment sector, specialising in both residential and commercial markets. The business has grown considerably from the early days and now employs over 60 staff. LOOKING AHEAD That’s as a result of creating innovative solutions to a demanding and changing market, offering extensive research and development facilities (which are regarded as some of the best in the country) plus providing expert sales, support and production capabilities. This year saw the investment in IC and ICP analytical instrumentation which enables the business to identify all the common chemistries. Whilst this equipment has proven to be very costly, it does offer a real edge to the company’s customers and has helped it to establish current technologies and develop new analytical methods for the future.

BIOCIDAL PRODUCT REGULATIONS (BPR) The Biocidal Product Regulations (BPR) were introduced on 1 September 2015 and this piece of legislation has really impacted the water treatment industry and will continue to do so until 2022/23. Water Treatment Products have appointed a full time Regulatory Manager who also sits on important technical committees, and advises the business and customers alike. Whilst there are many hurdles to overcome in the future, Water Treatment Products are delighted to have received the first ever BPR authorisation number for a biocide (their premium range of Copper Long Life Algaecides). But the work doesn’t stop there – in January two widely used biocides will be approved (sodium and calcium hypochlorite) and rest assured the business is compliant. The contemporary level-deck pool is 10m x 5m and 1.5m deep. The plantroom specification includes an AstralPool Deep Bed Aster Filter, 58kW Plate Heat Exchanger, Triogen UV System and a Bayrol PoolManager with automatic chlorine dosing. The pool interior is finished in aqua blue porcelain tiles. The pool has a bespoke stainless steel handrail and a Pahlen countercurrent unit which allows bathers to swim against ‘the tide’ providing exhilarating exercise. The pièce de résistance is the pool’s feature wall which incorporates two waterfalls that cascade water into the pool, treating bathers to vigorous showers. The pool surround, which was supplied by the main contractor, is made of 150mm x 150mm porcelain tiles that resemble natural wood. Expanding Knowledge Across Our Industry In any sector which includes products or services that require specialist or technical knowledge, trained staff are a must and will add value to any business. Certain skills can’t always be taught by the employer though and sometimes, official certification may be a requirement too. Thankfully there are a number of well-respected organisations that cover a range of subjects to enhance the skill sets of wet leisure industry personnel and we examine what’s on offer By Jon Wadeson

xpanding the knowledge base of all employees should be a goal that all businesses across the wet leisure industry aspire to as the return on investment from the training and development of employees really is a no brainer. Yes, it will require time, money or more likely both, but there are plenty of rewards for doing so for both the employer and the employee. Staff benefit with improved job satisfaction and morale, plus a feeling of being valued. But it’s employers who are the big gainers with just some of the benefits being improved employee performance, a reduction in staff turnover and a consistency of performance. A business with well-trained, knowledgeable and qualified staff is a confident business and more often than not, they enjoy great reputations with both customers and competitors alike. Across the industry, operators, company owners and staff appreciate that numerous standards and procedures exist that need to be adhered to, plus there are many sectors where technical knowledge is quite simply a must have. But which organisations should businesses turn to when they need to educate staff correctly and what courses are available? Over the years, the wet leisure industry has appeared sometimes to struggle with the subject of training and it has often come across as rather disjointed. However

more recently there’s been a big push to educate personnel professionally and provide recognised qualifications so in this issue, we take a closer look at just some of the organisations and courses that are helping to develop staff across the various sectors of our industry.

ISPE TRAINING TICKS A NUMBER OF BOXES The Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers was set up in December 1978 to establish an organisation for the individual swimming pool engineer to (amongst other roles) “Engage in the education and training of persons within all sectors of the swimming pool industry”. The Institute’s objectives are achieved by means of a Home Study Course, One-Day Seminars, Hands-on Workshops, ISPE-endorsed Training, Technical Publications, a CPD Scheme and their highly popular Workshops Programme held annually at SPATEX. The ISPE Home Study Course covers (domestic swimming pool) construction, heating, chemicals and filtration and allows a large degree of flexibility in that students of any age or background may register at any time and study at their own speed. Exams are held once a year, in March, and all students are invited to sit the exams each year, when they are ready. The ISPE One-Day Seminars are open to members and non-members and cover ISPE’s training objectives are achieved by numerous means including a CPD Scheme and their highly popular Workshops Programme held annually at SPATEX

pretty much every aspect of the pool and spa industry. Programmes are sent to all ISPE members about six weeks before each event or may be downloaded from the ISPE website. The ISPE Filtration Workshop is a mixture of both theoretical and practical hands-on training, held once each year in the autumn. This is an excellent intensive day’s training for a maximum of 16 delegates and covers all aspects of filter servicing and maintenance, in addition to topics on pipework and pumps, too. ISPE-Endorsed Training recognises the need for specialist training in the commercial sector. ISPE has ‘endorsed’ the training provided by four companies who specialise in training in this area. Aimed at those working in hotels, schools, holiday parks, clubs and other commercial facilities, training may be tailored for specific site requirements. Finally, the ISPE CPD Scheme presents individuals with a method to keep a formal record of their training and is open to all (ISPE members or non-members). CPD can take many forms. For example: Attending seminars, workshops or courses; taking part in meetings or discussions, reading or writing a technical article and, for those newer to the trade, progressing through the ISPE Home Study Course and completing the exams.

BISHTA’S WORKFORCE QUALIFICATIONS PROMOTE SAFE HOT TUB STANDARDS Under HASAW Act 1974 the training of anyone who is going to handle dangerous goods is deemed to be a requirement. There are a number of courses available, such as water hygiene management and the carriage of dangerous goods that are either provided directly through BISHTA or from other parties. These types of courses need regular (2 – 3 years) refresher training to ensure knowledge is updated. BISHTA’s foremost focus is to ‘Promote Safe Hot Tub Standards’ and to achieve this it uses a broad range of tasks to meet their ultimate goal, but the most rapid way to see standards rise across the industry is through education. The Association has a number of qualifications available to its members including:

Endorsed by CIMSPA the Pool Plant Operations qualification was developed in consultation with industry groups to ensure it is fit-for-purpose

• Hot Tub Site Surveyor – This qualification will provide recognition of customer care, health & safety information, and also the importance of undertaking a site survey as an integral part of the process of selling hot tubs. • Electrical Awareness Workshop – The course is open to BISHTA members in the first instance, and several companies have chosen to join BISHTA, as a result, to benefit from the relevant knowledge passed on at this course. • Common Water Hygiene Management Training Syllabus – BISHTA’s Technical Committee has been revising and updating the syllabus to ensure that water hygiene management courses meet the current expectations. With a total of six tutors trained so far, providing a range of options. • Certified Hot Tub Technician (CHTT) – As an additional training opportunity, BISHTA is currently working with colleagues from the APSP to develop courses in the UK, based on the CHTT syllabus. Work is ongoing regarding ensuring the course is made specific to the UK audience, and this includes being able to cross-reference not only the American Standards but also BISHTA Standards and other relevant guidance in Britain.

STA’S SAFETY TRAINING AWARDS OFFER POOL PLANT QUALIFICATIONS Safety Training Awards, STA’s Awarding Organisation, offers a range of modern Pool Plant qualifications, with the STA Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations providing the pinnacle in training. Endorsed by CIMSPA, the Pool Plant Operations qualification was developed in consultation with industry groups to ensure it is fit-for-purpose and relevant to the modernday operator across all different pool types – from sports and leisure centres to hotels, holiday parks, spas and interactive water features. The qualification has a technically advanced syllabus covering all aspects of modern pool and spa operations in a practical, learner-friendly way. The content follows and simplifies where possible industry guidelines from PWTAG, BS EN 15288 (parts 1 and 2), health and safety sources and National Occupational Standards.

The qualification, which is supported with a comprehensive resource manual and robust assessment, consists of six units: • Principles of healthy and hygienic pool water • Principles of water testing • Principles of disinfection, pool chemistry and dosing in pool plant operations • Principles of mechanical pool plant operations • Swimming pool heating, ventilation and energy efficiency • Management practices and health and safety in pool plant operations. Ultimately, the Level 3 qualification provides operators with all of the information required to operate safe and hygienic pool facilities. The other pool plant related qualifications available in the Safety Training Awards suite include the STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Pool Water Treatment, which trains learners in the basics of swimming pool plant operation, and the STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Pool Water Testing qualification, which provides learners with the information and skills needed to test swimming pool and spa water competently. All Safety Training Awards’ qualifications are delivered through its network of Approved Training Centres (ATCs) which ensures qualifications are delivered to a consistent, high level standard.

IOS – HELPING TO SAFEGUARD BUSINESSES AND THE PUBLIC The IoS are a Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) Approved Training Provider.

This means that their Pool Plant Technical Operator training is of the highest standard, using PWTAG guidelines which are viewed as best practice. PWTAG standards have become the benchmark for compliance with HSG179 referencing the PWTAG Code of Practice for water treatment. The Code of Practice recommends that training should be accredited by PWTAG (or be to the same standard) to ensure compliance. Accreditation is given to training providers that follow the correct syllabus and ensure robust assessment methods. It’s safe to say any organisation that values its reputation needs competently trained staff who have been suitably assessed and found capable. IoS’s main course is the PWTAG accredited Pool Plant Technical Operator training which covers everything needed to maintain a swimming pool, spa or water feature effectively. This is a three-day course, awarded through IQL UK and assessed through an on course test and an independently marked work based assignment. The course covers circulation, filtration, disinfection, pH correction and heating of pool water. How to maintain water which is safe and pleasant to swim in, how to test pool water correctly and understand how to restore it to ideal conditions is also covered. This certificate needs to be revalidated every three years to keep technical knowledge of pool plant and water treatment up to date. This can be completed through either an online course or a one-day face-to-face update. For those new to pool plant, IoS have a foundation certificate which is a one-day course providing all the basics of water management and water safety. For health clubs and resorts that provide any kind of spa facility, IoS also have a oneday Spa Pool Operators Certificate.

HOT TUB TRAINING INITIATIVE CONTINUES TO GROW Complete Pool Controls (CPC) has had another busy year with its hot tub training course. Since February 2017 CPC has been offering a one-day training course designed for hot tub professionals and personnel dealing with hot tubs as part of a holiday rental. The BISHTA accredited course ‘Hot Tub and Swim Spa Water Hygiene Management’ has continued to be popular within the hot tub industry, with over 400 delegates having attended so far. Staff attending have included

sales personnel and engineers from multinational and independent hot tub companies, to holiday park operators and private owners of hot tubs who are renting out a hot tub as part of a holiday let. Martin Rigby who runs the training division of Complete Pool Controls – one of the UK’s leading suppliers of water treatment products – advised: “As the popularity of hot tubs being offered as part of a holiday rental continues to grow, more and more holiday park operators are becoming aware for the need to have competent staff and the correct safety procedures in place. Since the publication of HSG282 from the HSE in 2017, delegates are looking for concrete advice on how best to maintain a hot tub and swim spa when available as part of a holiday let. “It is a huge responsibility looking after a tub which is being used by the public and for many of the delegates the guidelines and recommendations are a big shock but by the end of the course they are aware of exactly what is required to fulfill their health and safety obligations.”

A Global Event, Not To Be Missed When it comes to trade shows, Piscine Global Europe is the one event which has become a ‘must-attend’ for many within the industry. Taking place in Lyon this November, it attracts visitors and exhibitors from around the world and is often used by manufacturers to launch products for the season ahead. aking place from 13 to 16 November 2018 at Eurexpo in Lyon, France, Piscine Global Europe is the largest and arguably the most important international professional exhibition for the swimming pool and spa sector. In a friendly and professional setting more than 600 exhibitors will welcome the 18,000 visitors expected to attend this exhibition, which is now considered an unmissable event by many around the world and across the industry. For the 2018 edition, Piscine Global Europe will be structured around four major themes: • Residential: for privately-used residential swimming pools. • Commercial: for public pools, aquatic centres, hotels and campsites. • Outdoor: for developing the area around the pool. • Wellness: for the fitness segment (spas, saunas and steam rooms, fitness equipment, etc.). For each of these themes, the main trends in the pool and spa sector will be showcased. This coming edition of the biennial event will shine the spotlight on the wet leisure lifestyle, the customer experience and digital technologies. With residential pools having now become living areas in their own right, Piscine Global Europe is adopting a highly innovative, renewed approach spanning the complete sector including segments such as spas, the outdoor pool environment and wellness. The visitor experience has also been rethought to reflect this new approach. The layout and decoration of the exhibition itself have been imagined in this spirit, through to the names of the areas: for instance, the reception area has been renamed ‘The Terrace’ and the innovations area is now called the ‘Pool Innovations Promenade’.

I Really Must Start Writing This… Soon “I know I need to do it and it is something that I enjoy, it’s just that I’ve got into the habit of putting it off until the last possible moment but here’s the deadline so I best get started. Hang on. I’ll just put the kettle on first...” Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams looks at the subject of procrastination

rocrastination. Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow. We all do it, to a greater or lesser extent it seems to be part of human nature. We put stuff off and we have done it all our lives, from that instinctive reaction to being asked, ‘Jamie, will you go and tidy your room?’ to a reminder to fill in your tax return and, unfortunately, ‘In a minute, Mum’ just doesn’t cut any ice with HMRC. It seems that the internet is full of people worrying about it, wondering why we do it and suggesting ways of stopping doing it. One thing it seems that we want to do right here and right now is to talk about procrastination, or at least read about it. There is a school of thought that the habit is becoming more common because our lives are so much busier than before and therefore we have no choice but to procrastinate. This may well be partially true, but I suspect that there were cavemen looking at jobs that needed doing while grunting the Neanderthal equivalent of, ‘Can’t we skin this Diplodocus tomorrow?’

TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY Time is always limited. None of us have so much that we can afford to waste it. In the words of the great Hunter S Thompson ‘Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, ‘Wow what a ride!’ In our hectic lives it’s easy to put off spending time with the people who should be closest to us, our parents and our children, but if we keep delaying those moments it’s possible that we eventually look up and find the opportunity is gone, and that’s a tragedy.

THE THIEF OF TIME So why do we do it? Technology is certainly working hard to provide distractions that consume our time but that can’t be the only reason, can it? Fear of failure is one reason. If you don’t attempt something then you are guaranteed not to fail at it. In the same vein, perfectionism can encourage you to put off a job until you think you can do it perfectly. But isn’t a job done reasonably well

better than one not done to perfection? I’ve certainly managed projects at work that have started out less than perfect but at least we had something that we could build on and they now make a significant contribution to the business. Anyway, surely we should try and make the most of our time or, as a well-known brand of trainers used to say:

JUST DO IT There might be changes and improvements that you want to make in your business such as changing to a better supplier and, there might be things that you want to make time for in your personal life. If putting stuff off is getting in the way of that, then here are some things that can help. Forgive yourself. Don’t beat yourself up over the procrastination that you have done, just move on and get over it. Change the words. Stop saying the something ‘need’s doing or it ‘has’ to be done, say that you choose to do it or you want to. Focus. Turn off the distractions. Nothing is going to change on Facebook and no new emails will arrive until you get this done. OK. Worst things first. Get the thing that you dread most done first. Celebrate. Reward yourself for getting that task done.

FREE TIME There’s no such thing as free time. In fact, it’s just about the most valuable thing that we have, so if we can stop wasting it and start spending it wisely then that would be pretty good, but what to spend it on? From a business perspective it might be writing that email newsletter to all your customers, or it might be getting your website updated; they don’t last forever you know. Perhaps you should get up to speed with some of the new technologies in our industry or just tidy up the showroom. Just think how good you would feel if just one of those jobs were done. For my part, I’m going to spend some valuable time a bit closer to home, spending it with my adult kids who now live further afield. It may not sound like much but getting them home together to go crabbing off the pier before a drink in our local will be a rich source of memories for years to come. I’ll text them to arrange it. I’ll just put the kettle on first.
