Preface

The studio was structured as an introduction to urban design representation and how it is used as a means of design thinking.

The premise is that urban design is best understood and expressed through the study and representation of the built urban environment.

Hence the studio will focus on the study and representation of the key urban elements in cities and will be structured in multiple modules running through the semester, each culminating with an exhibition of the outcome. These modules will significantly focus on effectively capturing and communicating the spatial qualities of the urban built environment.

Module 1 It involves perceiving and representation of the key elements of urban design. The premise is that building types, urban blocks, streets and public open spaces form the key elements that come together to make any functional urban space. The exercises in this module will enable students with methods to study eachelement and how they contribute to the scale, form, character and their relationship with the larger urban context.

Module 2 In final exercise which will involve the application of the abilities and skills developed in the first module through preparation of a framework plan for an urban intervention. This module focuses on preparing and representing site analysis, design strategies The culmination of this module will be to prepare a set of effective communication representation drawings for the design and the analysis.

Triangular Plaza to decongest the vehicular traffic movement

Adding the dedicated cycle track on both side of the edges so as to have better connectivity along the edges and pedestrianizing the lake edge (Happy Street).

Street Details

Extended Sidewalks with dedicated cycle tracks to accomodate pedestrian flow and increase Non Motorized transport in region. Provide with natural shadding devices (trees) and adiquate lighting.

Near the lake edge the part with greater presence of activities, where almost all edges are porous and active, Nowdays pedestrian space is reduced in the re design of street section was redivided the street and converted into the one way only to accomodate the cycle tracks and pedestrian flow.

Open Space Detail The project of AMC land near sanjeevani hospital junction has available space for Food Plaza. In the region, the plaza plays the role of public open space. It proposed to rethink the use and landscape design, aiming to create the attractive space for the community by bringing together the commercial use (food court) ,resting space, kids play area and dedicate space for street vendors.

Learnings

“Intricate minglings of different uses of the cities are not a form of chaos, on the contrary they represent a complex and highly developed form of order�

-Jane Jacob Elements of urban design are basically pieces of a puzzle which are fragments of urban design .These elements generates urban spaces by the people for the people to utilize as a space.

The study of building types has sensitised to understand the typical characterstics of each typology and there importance as the built edge to all urban spaces. Further, the study of urban blocks helps to study in building in sense of scale, proportion and context in an urban space. It establish the importance of built edges, hights, width in an urban space.

The study of streets and open spaces has superimposed human scale perspective to the sence of scale and proportion. Understanding the importance of people in urban space in cojuction with urban design elements has librated the mind beyond the aesthetic and functions of urban design. It developes the connection between the design and the people establishing the essence of urban spaces as the place for the people.

At last, after understanding all these elements of urban design.

The purpose is to design the street which has diversity of urban spaces which makes it lively by incorporating elements and staratergy available for all members of the society. Jane Jacob’s idea of having eyes on street is well understood through the study of mix use spaces that creates the environment which remains active throughout the day.
