COMMENTS from the publisher SCOTTSDALE—ALWAYS THE BEST WAY TO START THE YEAR This issue of AHT is always a joy to produce. Going into Scottsdale, we may not be able to predict who’s going to win or who’s going to be the talk of the show, but one thing we are sure of is that the show will reach new heights. Against all odds, somehow every year Scottsdale raises the standard of “amazing” for our breed, and since this issue is where we celebrate that, it’s one we can all look forward to. I always say that when we head to Scottsdale in February, we go into the Scottsdale Bubble. We lose touch with what is happening in the real world. We can never really escape the real world, nor would we want to—but in some years, it seems like a great gift to be able to spend two weeks exclusively with our Arabian horses, among our friends in the Arabian community. Hopefully, when the show is over, we emerge rested and reenergized for the year to come. I truly hope that happened for you this year. Scottsdale Week began for my family with the Ames Foundation Gala, which raises money for the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund and Mayo Hospitals and Clinics. For me personally, it will always be a tribute to my dad, his love for Arabian horses and their people, and the clinic that cared for him so well in the closing years of his life. On behalf of my family, I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, sponsored or supported the Gala—in the end, it went beyond what we could have ever imagined. To me, the greatest news out of Scottsdale this year was how many people were there. From what I saw, our crowd size was back to normal. And the quality of horses at the show was exceptional (but then, it always is). Everyone you spoke with said sales were up on horses and breedings. So, if Scottsdale is any indicator, the future of the Arabian horse looks bright. I want to wish you all a Happy Spring!

Arabian Horse Association’s Qualifications Update Q&A
D
o I have to place in a class to be qualified for a Regional Championship Show?
No, you just need to participate. What do you mean by “participate”? Participation definition: a. In a class where horses compete together, participated means a horse/rider/driver/handler must have been entered, shown, and judged (perform at all required gaits both ways of the ring and remain in the ring until excused by the judge). In other words, finishing the class. b. In a class where horses compete individually, participated means a horse/rider must have completed the individual requirements of the class and be eligible to receive a score. c. Horses which are excused/disqualified/eliminated/received a “no score” are not considered “adjudicated” and would not receive credit for a participation. Can I use qualifications earned from last year (2021) towards this year’s Regionals and Nationals? Yes, you can use anything that AHA recorded. The results you will find from 2021 will be 1st through 6th place at any qualifying local show. You will also be able to use Top Five placings earned at Regionals, East Coast and Pacific Slope. (Note: Top Six can be used in the future; Eastern and Western Canadian Breeders have not been held since 2019 due to the pandemic). Does the participation have to be within the regional boundaries for the Regional Championship I want to attend? No, you no longer need to qualify within that region. In the past this was true; if you wanted to attend the Region 14 Championship, you had to qualify at a Region 14 qualifying show. Now you can qualify within the Region 14 boundaries and go to any Regional Championship Show you want, it can be Region 14, or Region 13, or any other Regional you wish to attend.
I would like to attend more than one Regional Championship Show, how can I do that? This depends on the class you are competing in. If you are competing in a category I class, you would need a second participation to go to another Regional Championship Show. In fact, after obtaining a second participation, you are qualified to attend as many Regional Championships as possible that you wish to attend. Where do I find the list of the categories? This can be found in chapter 14 of the 2022 AHA Handbook. How do I qualify my horse for an Equitation or Showmanship class? Remember, it is not the horse that needs to qualify, it is the rider or handler that needs to qualify through participation. Is there a time in which it is important to place in a class? At the Regional level, a Top Five placing will automatically qualify you for Nationals in that section. What do you mean by “section”? • A section is defined by the classes within that discipline and/or breed. An example is the Arabian Western Pleasure section. This section is made up of open, AAOTR, AOTR, JOTR. AATR, ATR, JTR, Jr. Horse, Select, Choice, Elite, Primetime, Ladies/Gents. • For Dressage/Western Dressage classes, each level is considered its own section, i.e., Training is a section, First Level is a section, Second Level is a section, etc. You cannot use a participation in a First Level class to qualify for a class in Second Level. How do I qualify for multiple classes at a Regional Championship Show? Participation in one recognized class in that section now qualifies you to compete in as many classes within that section at any one Regional Championship Show of your choice. Example: Participate at a qualifying show in HA/AA Western Pleasure ATR qualifies for any and as many classes in HA/AA Western Pleasure if you meet the definition for an Amateur, Amateur Owner, Leveling, Jr. Horse, etc.
Ar abian Horse Times | 34 | Volume 52, No. 7
Can I use qualifications earned in the Half-Arabian/ Anglo-Arabian Western Pleasure section for my Arabian Western Pleasure horse? No, as qualifications are earned by the horse. A Half-Arabian cannot earn qualifications for a purebred Arabian and vicea-verse. Where can I find a list of the sections? The list of sections can be found on the AHA website under Competition/Resources/Qualifications/Recognized Sections. Can my trainer qualify my horse for me for an Amateur class? A Professional cannot qualify the horse for an Amateur, but an Amateur can qualify the horse for a Professional. If the Amateur obtains a participation in a Western Pleasure ATR, the trainer can use that qualification for the Open Western Pleasure. I am unable to attend the qualifying shows, how can I get my horse qualified for Regionals and Nationals? In the past, an “Owner” would be required to qualify the horse for an “Owner” class at the Regional and National level. This has now changed, any “Amateur” can now qualify the horse and the “Owner” can use that qualification at the Regional and National level if they or a family member or co-owner competes (as defined in the USEF rules under AR110).
Can I use a Regional Participation or a Regional Top Five to compete at another Regional Championship Show? No, a Regional Participation or Regional Top Five can ONLY be used toward a National level qualification. Can I use a National Participation or a National placing to compete at another Regional or National Championship Show? Beginning in year 2020, AHA Recognized National Champions are qualified for two additional years and may re-enter that National Championship class. Reserve National Champions are qualified for an additional year to re-enter that National Championship class. Previous 2019 and earlier AHA Recognized National Champions are qualified for life and may re-enter that National Championship class. Previous Lifetime qualifications earned may be used at any National Championship Show (as long as the class is offered). Currently a National qualification earned at any AHA National Championship can be used at any other AHA National Championship as long as that class is offered at that AHA National Championship show. See QUAL 113 for complete rules. Do National Champions and Reserve National Champions from Mid-Summer Nationals fall into the above rule? Yes, the 2020 and 2021 Mid Summer competition were held as a National Show and horses and equitation riders can take advantage of the rule.
We do not have competitions in my area that offer classes for me to qualify, what can I do? We are continuing with Open Show qualifications for most of the specialty classes. These require participation and the rules at found in Chapter 15 of the 2022 AHA Handbook.
Are there any classes which do not require qualifications? Yes, these are classes which previously did not have qualifications as they are “specialized” and are not (or rarely) held either at Arabian and/or Open shows. They fall into category IV.
If the class you need does not require specialized equipment, course, judges and/or cattle, consider purchasing a TBA slot for your class. An example might be a Native Costume class or Ladies Side Saddle.
Do I need to qualify for the 2-Year-Old Sport Horse In-Hand class at Regionals and Nationals? Yes, with the new participation qualification system, you will need to qualify under Category II which requires on participation at a qualifying show to compete at any and as many Regional Championships.
How do I qualify for Nationals? A Regional Top Five obtained in your section is the easiest way. A Top Five earned Arabian Hunter Pleasure ATR qualifies for any and as many classes in Arabian Hunter Pleasure if you meet the definition for an Amateur, Amateur Owner, Leveling, Jr. Horse, etc. I did not receive a Top Five at a Regional Championship; can I still get qualified for Nationals? Yes, depending on the category, you will need either 2 or 3 participations. One of these participations can be from a Regional Championship, meaning, you did not place in the Top Five but can still use that “Regional” participation to go to Nationals.
The National qualification needed is a Regional Top Five or better or participate at two qualifying AHA Approved shows (one can be a participation from a regional if you do not place in the Top Five). How do I qualify for Performance Halter? This rule has remained the same, you must compete in a Performance class at that show in order to compete in the Performance Halter class at that same show. This is the requirement for local qualifying, Regional and National Championships. See REQ 112.3 for complete rule. Updated 3/10/22

FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED MADE IN THE USA
by COLLEEN SCOTT With a red carpet, outdoor fire and valet parking as the greeting, Arabian horse enthusiasts from all over the country knew upon arrival they were in for a treat at the Hagale Family Arabians Farm Opening held on Saturday, March 5 at their new facility in Springfield, Mo. More than 600 people from as far away as Connecticut, Tennessee, Texas, Michigan, Louisiana and Ohio descended upon the southern Missouri town for the festivities. “We were really appreciative that so many people made the effort to get here so soon after the Scottsdale show,” says Jim Hagale. “It was really very humbling to us.”
Besides Jim and his wife, Mary Martha, their sons Travis and Tyson, and daughters Jennifer and Jamie were on hand with their families. The afternoon started with tours of the newly renovated barn, which includes 31 stalls (three more will be added when the breeding lab is complete), a large indoor arena, two roundpens, office, viewing area, lounge and tack room. No detail was overlooked in the design or appointments throughout. At 5 p.m., guests were invited to be seated in the indoor arena, which had been transformed into what looked like an elegant evening under the stars. With a glittering black and gold color scheme, glistening chandeliers, fine linens and a gourmet menu including prime rib, grilled shrimp and a savory mashtini bar, it was truly memorable. Signature cocktails, named after the prestigious lineup of Hagale Family Arabian horses, flowed from a full bar.
Attendees were treated to presentations of a handful of the Hagale Family collection of horses, starting with an entrance by Chris Wilson carrying the American flag aboard the crowd favorite and multi-time champion stallion SF Aftershoc (SF Specs Shocwave x SF Sweet Elegance). Chris and Shan Wilson, long-time friends and trainers of the Hagale family, ended the presentation with the family’s two premiere stallions, SF Aftershoc and SF Destination Victry (SF Specs Shocwave x AParty Girl) standing face-to-face in front of the excited crowd.
Ar abian Horse Times | 38 | Volume 52, No. 7
Jen Wilson, Farm Director for Hagale Family Arabians, orchestrated the entire event with help from Marketing Director Jaime Johnson who created and executed all of the communications efforts. Jen also served as emcee that evening, announcing each of the horses as they made their way through the presentation area. Besides the presentation, another highlight of the evening was a live auction for the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund, with the proceeds specifically earmarked for Rebecca Durr Vesty who continues to fight breast cancer. More than $116,000 was raised from the auction, which included fine art, vacation homes, breedings and training packages. Rhett Akins, singer-songwriter of 32 #1 country hits, gave an acoustic performance, including his 1995 hit “That Ain’t My Truck.” The veteran performer shared stories about the other artists he has collaborated with such as Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, John Pardi and his son, Thomas Rhett.
Ar abian Horse Times | 39 | Volume 52, No. 7
While Akins has enjoyed a long career in the entertainment industry, Eli Wilson is just getting started. The 14-year-old high school student, son of Shan and Molly, shocked the audience with his stunning, spot-on rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon.” Tim Shea, Shea Stables and Maroon Fire Arabians, was interviewed by the Times’ own Kameron Kicklighter during the event. “When you put a fantastic facility together with the fact that they are buying some of the best horses in the country – it’s going to be a killer combination,” he said. Going forward, both Shan and Chris Wilson will train out of the facility as the family continues making new friends, getting reacquainted with old friends, breeding and showing champion horses and making contributions to the advancement and enjoyment of the breed. “We are so grateful for all of the people in the industry that have been so supportive,” says Jim. “That’s what this party was all about.”■

Spotlight Futurity Cover Story:
by CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI
In barely three years, Holly Hill Farms’ owners, Renee Pelzman and Morgan Runyon, have created one of the most exciting breeding programs in the industry after taking the big dive into the world of standing a top Arabian stallion, having purchased Fire and Goldd (Afire Bey V x Brassmis) from iconic breeder Marty Shea in February 2019. Already proud owners of several Fire and Goldd offspring, including the Shea-bred Half-Arabians Goldd Standard (affectionally known as Digger) and chestnut mare Glitter and Goldd (Glitter), they were captivated by his offspring’s beauty and “simply lovely to be around” demeanor. Though from different breeds (Goldd Standard’s dam is the Dutch Harness Horse mare Vee Gates, and Glitter and Goldd’s, the ASHA mare Stylish Contessa), Fire and Goldd’s stamp came through. The half siblings both possess Goldd’s elegant long neck, sturdy substance, and functional conformation, and his willing and engaging temperament are front and center. Morgan affirms, “All these wonderful traits were topped off with Goldd’s flair and charisma that both Digger and Glitter made their own. It became obvious that Fire and Goldd passes on to his babies the excitement a great show horse exudes. “Goldd sired ten foals (six Half-Arabians and four purebreds) between our own mares and outside clients in 2019,” Morgan continues, “and when these foals hit the ground in 2020, our long wait was instantly rewarded. We are thrilled with our (now) 2-year-old Goldd babies. “The pandemic definitely slowed down the 2020 breeding season, but 2021 came on like a house on fire! Numerous outside breeders chose Fire and Goldd to breed to their mares, including repeat clients. We bred back our mares to produce several more full siblings and they’ve definitely taken Holly Hill Farms to the next level. We couldn’t be prouder.” Among them is the flashy Landmark’s Dolly Parton, a daughter of legendary Saddlebred stallion SA Tomcat. Acquired last year, Dolly’s foal will be her first and should be a blockbuster. Ar abian Horse Times | 4 | Spotlight Futurity 2022
Morgan, a believer in letting babies be babies, is ever astute following the growth, movement and personalities of the youngsters. She reports, “The different dams obviously bring their own traits to the table. Still, Goldd’s fluid movement, firm bone and fine conformation are evident in all. Each possesses their own personality, with Goldd’s kind and willing nature ever evident. We will let the babies show us what they want to excel in, but I have to confess, we have a trotting fool in our 2-year-old filly Unorthoddox (x Afire Gdanser).” She and her half-sister, Enlightenedd, who was recently sold to Tim and Tiffiny Barta, will definitely be high-end English Pleasure performers. Morgan and Renee’s desire to own “cool” Arabian stallions is infectious. “A couple years ago at Region 15, another gleaming chestnut stallion caught my eye,” laughs Morgan. “Watching MA Noble Hope (IXL Noble Express x MA Bey Mustique, by AA Apollo Bey) instantly took me to that place where you embrace the thrill of how much fun a great Park horse can be.” A consistent U.S. top ten and regional champion, “Hank” will join the Holly Hill Farms show horse string for what should be a great 2022 season.
GA Valor
MA Noble Hope
Moving in a different direction, Holly Hill Farms recently acquired 3-year-old bay stallion GA Valor (Gazal Al Shaqab x Veronica GA, by Versace). A full sibling to the great SF Veraz, “Val” is currently in training with Colonial Downs Training Center’s Dwane Hankins. Morgan is pleased to report that Val’s beginnings in performance training are pointing to a western pleasure career. “We seek to add Val’s elegance, type and manner,” Morgan says, “as another great addition to our show stock and breeding operation.” Fire and Goldd’s busy 2021 breeding season is about to launch a bevy of 2022 babies for Holly Hill Farms and outside breeders, including Amanda Purdin Standish and renowned trainer and breeder Vicki Humphrey, who is eagerly anticipating a foal out of her 2020 U.S. National Champion AEPA Futurity homebred mare Drops of Jupiter VH. Holly Hill Farms’ ASHA mares, The Sun’s Out (by CF First Night Out) and El Baile (by Kalarama’s Spanish Dancer) were bred back to produce full siblings to Half-Arabian 2-year-olds Fools Goldd and Heart of Goldd. Morgan relates, “Fools Goldd (now owned by Burrline LLC) and Heart of Goldd have proven to be so amazing, we had to breed Goldd yet again to these special mares. Both mares are paramount to Holly Hill Farms’ breeding success. They trace back to multiple Hall of Fame dams and world class sires. Their pairing with Goldd has been spectacular!” Both colts were sold as weanlings to outstanding show homes. Fire and Goldd is once again an honored participant of this year’s Region 12 Spotlight Futurity. Fourteen years running, the Spotlight features a stallion lineup filled with U.S. National and World Champion show and breeding stallions, some of which breedings are currently available only through the Spotlight Auction. Held the evening of Thursday, May 5, the gala affair will feature offspring from previously nominated Spotlight Stallions competing in various disciplines for prestigious titles and prize pool money of $155,000. “Bringing Goldd into our lives continues to take us to Arabian horse heights we never expected,” Morgan concludes. “I must say, for two girls on a budget, I feel we’ve done pretty well.” v #PerpetuallyGoldden

n the surface, the story of Barta Show Horses sounds familiar in Arabian horse lore: when their daughter, Olivia, began riding, Tiffiny and Tim Barta decided to get involved in the business too—to the point that they now own a stallion and are drawing up plans for a farm in Ocala, Florida. However, those scant facts don’t begin to cover the depth of the family’s appreciation for the breed. For the Bartas, it’s not just what you do with the horses. It’s how and why you do it, and the bottom line is about the heart: the people, the animals, and what’s important in life.
The Story So Far The Bartas got into Arabians in 2015. Olivia primarily rides western, but is looking forward to more English, and while Tiffiny has shown in various divisions, she loves saddle seat best. Their 2020 purchase of SF The Patriot, whose pedigree (Allience x Spectra PR, by Promotion) is a star-studded outcross for English bloodlines today, has led them to establish their own breeding program. Their six national-caliber show horses, including Patriot, are at RBC Show Horses in North Carolina.

AHT: What has been the basis for your Arabian horse involvement? Tiffiny: For us, it’s always been a family thing. Usually, we take our RV to the horse shows and are able to spend a lot of time together. We have so many memories already—coming back after having a good ride, when you’ve placed, or after a bad ride, when you’re laughing, ‘What an idiot I am! I can’t believe I did that!’ AHT: When did you realize that Arabian horses would become this important to you? Tiffiny: The first time Olivia showed her own horse. She came out of the class with a ribbon, and just the smile on her face—it was like she had achieved something that she didn’t know she was capable of. Showing horses has taught her so much; no matter whether she wins or loses, she has the best attitude. She always goes back in and tries her best.
2022 Half-Arabian Colts: BSH The Kingsman By SF The Patriot, out of Ro & Me’s Visionary, by Undulata’s Nutcracker BSH The Huntsman By SF The Patriot, out of Undulata’s Coco Chanel, by Undulata’s Nutcracker
AHT: Let’s talk about your breeding program. Obviously, you’ll want to produce high quality horses. What are your other priorities? Tiffiny: Yes, we want to breed winning horses, but I take into account that that doesn’t always happen, and those foals deserve a home and love too. So, I’d like to stay “boutique” size; if not every horse we breed is top notch, we will be able to take the time to make sure they are able to find a job. I really love doing this, so I want to enjoy it and that’s part of what it takes for me. AHT: You’ve been very open about having no horse background before this, and now you are venturing into what can become a very pricey undertaking (everyone may offer advice that includes buying a horse or breeding from them). Tiffiny: Like anything else in this industry, you’re learning every day. I’m not afraid to make mistakes—I love learning, and I’m happy to hear people’s advice, but I don’t always have to follow it. The challenge is to see what you can do with what you learn. AHT: What has been your latest best experience? Tiffiny: Being at Hennessey Arabians for the birth of our first foals by Patriot, both colts from our Saddlebred mares by Undulata’s Nutcracker. The first we’re going to name BSH The Kingsman. They’re both so special. Hennessey has been great to work with—they made it very easy for me to be involved. AHT: How many mares are left to foal this year? Tiffiny: Two. One in April, by Ibn Farid, and one in May, my daughter’s western horse, who is in foal to *Khadraj NA. AHT: Eventually you’ll be selling horses too. Describe yourself for upcoming customers— who will they be dealing with? Tiffiny: Of course I’ll be saying all the good points about a horse, but if you buy one from me, you’re also going to know its faults. I think that’s important; we all know that every horse usually comes with a quirk (such as, ‘this one doesn’t like to be girthed’). There’s no perfect person and no perfect horse. It’s a matter of how you work with it that counts, and I want to make it as easy as possible for you and the horse. That doesn’t have to be a problem at all if you work with each horse individually. AHT: What advice would you give Olivia that you make it a point to live by? Tiffiny: I want her to know that she can get through this world and be kind as she does it. While being strong, she can be kind and gentle. Doing the right thing is always the correct thing to do. Ar abian Horse Times | 19 | Spotlight Futurity 2022

67 TH ANNUAL SCOTTSDALE ARABIAN HORSE SHOW FEBRUARY 17-27, 2022

SCOTTSDALE BY ALLY EDWARDS 67 YEARS OF SUNSHINE he Greatest Horse Show on Earth did not disappoint in any way this year. Eleven AND HORSES; days in February … thousands of exhibitors and spectators … all descended on THE DOORS WestWorld for the 67th Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Undoubtedly, one OPEN TO of the biggest shows of the year, the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona THE PUBLIC (AHAA), was host to just over 1,800 horses from all over the country, as well as internationally, ONCE MORE contributing to large class sizes and deep competition.

67 TH ANNUAL ARABIAN HORSE SHOW
Scottsdale itself, did its best, too. Sunny and moderate temperatures, with only one day of rain, made for ideal show weather. And gone were the empty stands of last year due to COVID; spectators were more than happy to return, filling the stands to watch the show and shopping in the huge expo hall. The first evening of the show, altruism was put on full display when members of the Arabian community gathered at the Ames Foundation Gala held in Hanger One of the Scottsdale Airport. Guests were given the red-carpet treatment, enjoying drinks, dinner and key speakers, while partaking in silent and live auctions, raising money to benefit the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund and Mayo Clinic. The conclusion of the night included the AHT Readers’ Choice Awards presentation, honoring people and horses in varying categories in the industry, and dueling pianos. Back on the show grounds, riders and their horses competed in main ring performance, working western, halter, and sport horse classes spread across six arenas. No matter the discipline, there is something for everyone and their Arabian to compete in at the Scottsdale show. Perhaps this was best exemplified by Stephen Bishop and his versatile gelding Guinness. Registered as Khasta Beaujalais DT, the two competed in 21 classes, including native costume, reining, western dressage, and western pleasure. They earned the fan favorite award for not being your typical show horse but enjoying the show and competition perhaps more than anyone. Plus, Guinness was fuzzy and adorable! As usual, for the first few days of the show, the youth dominated the arenas; their abilities more and more transparent every year. The 15-18 division is one of the most competitive age groups of all. Proving that they can be as versatile as their Arabians, five riders exemplified what hard work can accomplish. Between them and their 21 horses, all riding in a minimum of four various disciplines, Taryn Todd, Mckenna Bein, Siena Krueger, Sophie Yih and Lily Sandell, won a collective 17 championships, 12 reserves and 16 top tens in English and country pleasure, western and hunter pleasure, show hack, side saddle, native costume, reining, ranch riding and ranch horse rail; western and English trail, horsemanship, showmanship, and saddle, hunt and reining seat equitation. The adults followed, taking on the rest of the show. It was a great week for all, everyone coming out with smiles on their faces, happy with their rides and what they learned, no matter the ribbon outcome. The camaraderie in
and among barn families, and the support and appreciation of their horses and the work that goes into it, is best summed up by hearing someone at the outage shouting, “I got a ribbon!” after their ride and not caring what color it is. Introduced in 2021 to the Scottsdale show, Ranch Rail has become very popular within the industry and a welcome addition. Vallejo Reatamoon, 2022 Scottsdale Champion in both the Half-Arabian Ranch Riding and Ranch Riding Rail AATR with Katharyn Hart, has been dominating the amateur Ranch disciplines at Scottsdale (and Nationals!) for four years. If you were anywhere near the Half-Arabian hunter classes this week, no doubt you heard the name About Last Knight. With her owner, Arianna Bell, they won both the Elite and AAOTR 19-39 Hunter Pleasure. But the road to those perfect rides has been hard. In May of 2021, Arianna fell very ill. Diagnosed with Gastroparesis (paralysis of the digestive system), this led to surgeries which came with complications that led to more surgeries that resulted in a feeding tube placed directly in her stomach wall. The last surgery being in January, it was her parents and the team at Ehret Equine that Arianna and “Sara” got in the ring and performed like they did. “It was a wonderful experience, tube feeds, medication and all,” Arianna says. “Sara is a magnificent horse; she is both a challenge and a pleasure to ride and beautiful to watch. I was hoping just to be able to have good rides and to stay in the saddle, but instead, Sara rewarded me with some of the best performances she’s ever had in her life. I am beyond lucky to have her, and Sara and I are looking forward to a very full and fun 2022 show season.” The great thing about the Scottsdale show is that it brings in so many people to watch the show and get to know the Arabian. There were tours and activities for all to get involved in. On February 19, the show celebrated the first ever National Arabian Horse Day with opportunities for people to meet an Arabian, paint a horse, partake in an ice cream social and movie night, and many other fun events. It is also very exciting for the stands to be packed full and cheering for all the horses showing. It made for a special event. It’s hard to top a show like Scottsdale. Strong competition, great showgrounds, packed stands, incredible shopping, and constant activities make it unlike any other show around. It’s not surprising that everyone is already looking forward to next February, for another round of the greatest horse show on earth in the desert.

Stephen Bishop, a semi-retired psychiatrist by trade and horse enthusiast, made it clear that variety is truly the spice of life, for horses and people, with his appearance at the 2022 Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, where he and his gelding Khasta Beaujalais DT (Khasanova DT x Starberry Wine, by Marshall Dillon), affectionately called Guinness, quickly became a crowd favorite. Going into the show, Stephen recognized that it would be a “learning experience, not a winning experience.” To learn as much as he possibly could, Stephen entered his smart, game 13-year-old gelding in 21 classes, including western dressage, western pleasure, reining, ranch riding and mounted native costume. That’s a lot of classes, but Guinness was originally trained and conditioned as an endurance horse, so Stephen didn’t see a problem, other than being able to get from one arena to another and not miss the gate. When speaking about his experience at the show, the psychiatrist Stephen kicks in and reminds us that both humans and horses need variety, challenges and adventures. “Horses and humans are a lot alike. We get stale just doing the same thing over and over again. When we sit in our chairs with our clickers, confining ourselves to the same activities, we experience depression and anxiety, which constrict our lives even more. I encourage my patients to seek variety.” And he practices what he preaches. Stephen and Guinness were the epitome of variety. While most of their classes were in western disciplines, it was the costume class that really energized Stephen. His inspiration for participating in the “Greatest Show on Earth” stemmed from watching a video of a prior year’s costume class and his love of the movie, Lawrence of Arabia. Their appearance in the class was not only memorable for Stephen but for everyone there. The two captured the hearts of everyone and were named “Fan Favorite.” “I think people saw what a relationship I have with this horse,” says Stephen. “I’m his rider. The instructors I have had, like Gary Martinez, have been invaluable. But I do the groundwork. I ride him five times a week. And I think what people saw in that costume class is that I had the happiest horse in the show ring that night. He may not have had his head where it was supposed to be, but he was making eye contact with people in the stands, and I think they loved that.” “It has been such an honor to rub elbows with the people and horses at this level,” he says of the Scottsdale show. “I came here knowing it would be a learning experience, not a winning experience, but I’m still going home with some top ten awards.” Watch for Stephen and Guinness at another Region 8 show soon. The adventure continues. v Ar abian Horse Times | 161 | Volume 52, No. 7

A CONVERSATION
with Sam Peacemaker Of PCF Arabians
The Peacemaker name has become synonymous with achieving the highest standards of Arabian horse breeding in America. What drives your ambition to produce the next generation? What drives my ambition is the ever-growing
standard of quality that I see in the Arabian horse, particularly abroad, and my desire to compete on the highest level. Pilatus PCF represents three generations of PCF breeding. Please tell us your thinking in making the decisions that resulted in his birth. My breeding decisions rise from a fundamental foundation. My goals are to narrow the genetic variables by comparing the pedigrees of the proposed sire and dam to search for similar physical characteristics in the individuals that make up the pedigrees. And then, if the sire and dam are a good representation of most of the desirable characteristics in their pedigrees and have an overall desirable look, it makes up an ideal, broad basis for my breeding decision. In Pilatus’s case, if we work backward in that model, you would find that Exxalt, Pilatus’s sire, has the same neck and shoulder as Alexandria PCF, Pilatus’s dam. Exxalt also has a beautiful hip and loin, which is Alexandria’s most notable feature. Neck, shoulder, and body represent the overall conformational structure and balance of the horse, which in my mind, are the initial defining features of quality. They both share a great deal of charisma and movement as well. Without going into every
detail, as you study the pedigree on both sides, you’ll find that these characteristics run several generations deep. Pilatus represents the epitome of what I consider herd sire genetics in that one can safely assume that he will pass on his look and attitude. This is beginning to ring true with my examination of his first two foal crops. PCF horses are no strangers to the winner’s circle. But, with so much history in his pedigree, how did it feel when Pilatus was named the 2022 Scottsdale Champion Senior Stallion? In any case, Champion Senior Stallion at the largest Arabian horse show in the world felt amazing; to have bred a horse that achieved that level of success. Sandro Pinha and I had a moment of discussion after the show wherein we explained to each other that after 25 plus years of trying, neither of us, until Pilatus, had ever shown Champion Senior Stallion in Scottsdale. How do you plan to use Pilatus in the PCF program moving forward? Because I’ve seen two foal crops now, I have learned what he brings, and my plans are to give him a significant number of mares to prove himself and his impact on the breed. What is your philosophy for maintaining historical bloodlines in your broodmares while at the same time keeping abreast of new trends in the industry? Those who know me know that I do not believe in following trends but rather, I believe in maintaining efforts to improve upon the fundamental qualities of the Arabian horse, with necessary genetics found in exceptional individuals from diverse pedigrees. Simply put, my philosophy is to discover greatness and accept it from whence it comes.
Are there certain bloodlines you don’t already use that you would like to incorporate in the future? Yes. ;) What do you think are the strengths of modern breeding/halter divisions in America and around the world? What do you think can be improved? There are many good things about the halter divisions around the world. Always room for improvement. Discussion needed. Tell us about the PCF horses that are not shown at the national level. Where do they end up? They contribute in a variety of breeding, halter and performance show programs around the world or end up as pleasure horses in caring homes. What do you think is necessary to maintain Arabian horse breeding as a viable industry? The creation of programs that stimulate new public interest in the beauty and enjoyment of the Arabian horse that results in their engagement. What is your next goal as an Arabian horse breeder? I never think in terms of a next goal. My goal is always to breed to improve the quality of the herd sire. This will create the fastest and greatest impact to the program. Through discovery, I will include new blood and new combinations and share the generations of results with the world.q

“In-Hand” Conversations with our “Stand-Up” Halter Community!
Ar abian Horse Times | 60 | Halter • 2022
As an Arabian HALTER horse enthusiast, what attracts you to this discipline? Obviously, we’re attracted to the beautiful Arabian breed and the continuous challenge of breeding more “perfect” progenies. This never-ending quest allows us to meet likeminded people who share the same passion. Also, the whole experience is a lot of fun! Should a halter horse with no desirable/ideal conformation traits for the performance arena be considered as a top contender? I don’t think so. Conformation is and should always be a key component in the halter arena. What qualities are needed to make an exceptionally “pretty” halter horse? “Pretty” is used a lot in describing an Arabian with the characteristically dishy face. It is obviously much more than “just a pretty face.” For me, it’s the overall balance, legs, body, neck and head coming all together seamlessly. More importantly, it’s how it all translates into this incredible movement and charisma that differentiates the Arabians from all other horse breeds.
Cedar Ridge Arabians
Should a halter horse with no desirable/ideal conformation traits for the performance arena be considered as a top contender? As long as conformation and motion are two things judges look for in the halter ring, any of your top contenders should have the qualities necessary to show in a performance arena. What qualities are needed to make an exceptionally “pretty” halter horse? To me, the qualities necessary for producing exceptional halter horses starts with big, beautiful eyes, a nice tight throat latch, a smooth top line with a well-set tail, and a nice dish below the eyes into a nice short muzzle. As well as having good legs, of course.
Do you see other countries actively seeking American-bred horses for their programs, and if yes, why? Yes, I do. Boundaries disappear with social media; the whole world looks at our horses. We have great bloodlines in the U.S. certainly worthy of inclusion in any breeding programs worldwide. If you could change one thing in the halter industry, what would that be? I guess I’d be looking for ways to attract more people to the industry. How can we make it more accessible?
javan
Do you breed for or own halter horses with world-wide appeal? I have bred and sold many horses overseas. While breeding, I try to produce an athletic, functional animal that also brings in beauty. If the babies you produce have strong legs, good motion and a well put together body, there will always be a market for them, and if you can bring in a beautiful face on top of it all, then you have a foal that will be desired in all markets.

Do you see other countries actively seeking American-bred horses for their programs, and if yes, why? Yes, I have sold several horses this year to foreign markets, most specifically looking for breeding horses to bring better structure and functionality to their programs. If you could change one thing in the halter industry, what would that be? Not have classes specified for a “type” of horse. I think we should really be focusing on breed standard, rather than having different International/Open competitions.

What are the differences between a modern champion halter horse vs. a champion halter horse from 20 years ago? The beauty, the refinement and the overall balance has improved dramatically. New breeding techniques give us access to the best stallions and mares with no geographical restrictions which means constant improvement in the breed.
Desert Sky Arabians
As an Arabian HALTER horse enthusiast, what attracts you to this discipline? I am attracted by the opportunity to enjoy each day working with one of God’s most beautiful creations, the Arabian horse. I revel in the excitement and thrill of the arena and competing with the best of the best. Most importantly, I love the camaraderie and joy I receive while working closely with the top breeders and owners of these beautiful horses. Teamwork makes the dream work. Should a halter horse with no desirable/ideal conformation traits for the performance arena be considered as a top contender? No and neither should a performance horse be a top contender if they have no desirable/ideal conformation traits or a lack of Arabian type. For example, movement, carriage, balance, symmetry, and correctness are desirable traits for both the halter and performance arenas. What are the subtle similarities and differences between looking at a purebred vs. a Half-Arabian halter horse? The subtle similarities are noted in my answer above. The difference is that Half-Arabians are also expected to show traits of the other breed(s) in their pedigrees. While purebred Arabians have many different strains, they all must meet the breed standards. What qualities are needed to make an exceptionally “pretty” halter horse? Two words--Arabian type. They should have a beautiful carriage, both movement and tail carriage, a dry, typey head and face, and sharp, crisp ears. Ideally, they have the indefinable “look of eagles” that captures the attention of the audience as well as the judges.
Midwest Training Centre
Do you breed for or own halter horses with world-wide appeal? Yes. We have been blessed. Certain horses, beginning with Padron and his descendants, have elevated the Midwest program globally. We value the relationships we have made all over the world. Do you see other countries actively seeking American-bred horses for their programs, and if yes, why? Yes, foreign buyers remain a strong part of the Arabian horse market in America. Those astute breeders are constantly in search of the best-of-the-best to contribute to their breeding and show programs at home. American breeding has been foundational for many of them and continues to be a source of desired bloodlines. If you could change one thing in the halter industry, what would that be? I would prefer that halter horses not be shown in small, narrow arenas. They can only truly display their movement when given ample space to feel unconstrained. What are the differences between a modern champion halter horse vs. a champion halter horse from 20 years ago? Over the last 20 years there has been an overall higher concentration of quality in halter champions. There is nothing new in this trend. One look at photo histories of the Arabian horse shows the evolution of quality over time.

As an Arabian HALTER horse enthusiast, what attracts you to this discipline? The fact that we can show our horses very early on in their life and we don’t have to wait until they are 3 years old like you do if you want to ride them! Within the first several months of a halter horse’s life, they are in the show ring! I also love the people! I am sure there are some really good people in other disciplines, but halter people are real and down to earth. They have become part of our everyday life, as well as, lifelong friends. What are the subtle similarities and differences between looking at a purebred vs. a Half-Arabian halter horse? Most Half-Arabian halter horses today are more like 7/8’s Arabian! The closer it resembles a purebred, the better chance it has of winning. When I look at a Half-Arabian halter horse, I want to not be able to tell it’s a Half-Arabian. Breeders are breeding out the masculine-headed horses and putting much prettier heads on today’s Half-Arabs, making it really difficult to tell the difference. There is though, much more length of leg on the Half-Arabians still, so that is one thing that is pretty consistent. What qualities are needed to make an exceptionally “pretty” halter horse? Today’s standards are very tough! You must have the total package and not just a pretty head anymore! A pretty head is a must today, but you also need a complete horse with good length of neck and leg, good body and it must have movement! It is getting pretty competitive now, so you better have a good one! Do you breed for or own halter horses with world-wide appeal? We try to breed the best horse possible with what we have to breed with, so I hope so! Breeding is tough! You try and breed the best to the best and you don’t always get the best! I think everyone wants “world-wide” appeal in their breeding program. Who wants to sell to only one country? If you are not breeding halter horses to sell here and abroad, then you won’t be breeding long.

What are the differences between a modern champion halter horse vs. a champion halter horse from 20 years ago? Well, although we have only been breeding for 17 years, I liken it to the modern-day sports athlete. The majority of the sports athletes from 20+ years ago could not compete with the athletes of today! Today’s athletes are bigger, faster and stronger! It is just a fact! The halter horse today, although similar in some areas from 20 years ago, are much prettier. The first thing anyone looks at is their head, but everything else must be good too. In my opinion, only a few halter horses from 20 years ago could win today. Halter breeders breed for pretty first, and 20 years ago that wasn’t relative.

As an Arabian HALTER horse enthusiast, what attracts you to this discipline? The beauty of the Arabian horse and type. Arabian type has always been the most important characteristic of the Arabian horse. Also, the tractability of the Arabian. Ever since the Bedouins keep their Arabian mares and foals in their tents with their families, the Arabian horse has interacted with man more than any other equine.

Should a halter horse with no desirable/ideal conformation traits for the performance arena be considered as a top contender? Define no desirable conformation traits for the performance arena. Are we breeding performance horses? What type? What characteristics are required? When I judge performance classes, many of those horses don’t have “desirable conformation traits for performance.” Top halter horses are very fit and conditioned, and they remain sound enough to enter a horse show. Obviously, all Arabian divisions want and need horses to be sound and have quality conformational traits. My thought: if they can work hard as a show horse, they probably have good conformational traits.
As an Arabian HALTER horse enthusiast, what attracts you to this discipline? We have loved the movement of the Arabian horse from day one. The Arabian looks the best at l iberty and halter is the closest thing to liberty.
What qualities are needed to make an exceptionally “pretty” halter horse? Arabian type, balance, harmony, and great presence or charisma! Do you breed for or own halter horses with world-wide appeal? We breed highend Arabian horses for halter, that can be performance horses as well. I believe that although difficult to breed, top Arabian halter horses have world-wide appeal.
How do you feel about this year’s qualifications going from a pointsbased system to a participation-based system? I am NOT in favor of this. We are trying to qualify the horse on quality; not how many shows it went to or how many miles you hauled it. Should a halter horse with no desirable/ideal conformation traits for the performance arena be considered as a top contender? No. Do you breed for or own halter horses with world-wide appeal? Yes. Do you see other countries actively seeking American-bred horses for their programs, and if yes, why? Yes; AMERICA has the most unique Arabians.
Do you see other countries actively seeking American-bred horses for their programs, and if yes, why? Almost all countries seek out the U.S. market for halter horses; first, so that other countries can create a larger gene pool in their respective countries, and Kelly also, top U.S. horses are bred from great bloodlines from generation to generation. Other countries want the predictability of that blood.
What are the differences between a modern champion halter horse vs. a champion halter horse from 20 years ago? A completely different horse.
If you could change one thing in the halter industry, what would that be? I feel that at times we are losing our middle-class breeders, so I would like to come up with a plan that could help them have more success.

As an Arabian HALTER horse enthusiast, what attracts you to this discipline? We enjoy all disciplines encompassing the Arabian horse. Our halter horses are chosen to show for their type, beauty, conformation, movement, and—it is our belief—some love to show off, while others do not. However, we enjoy seeing our horses that don’t make it into the halter show arena in other disciplines, western, hunt, country English, or just someone’s personal horse they trail ride on. How do you feel about this year’s qualifications going from a points-based system to a participation-based system? I think anything is worth a try. This may allow more people that want to participate to have that opportunity, whether it be more affordable, or less time consuming. It may be beneficial for each and every one, as we want our Arabian horse family to grow, and everyone that wants to enjoy what we love, to be able to. Should a halter horse with no desirable/ideal conformation traits for the performance arena be considered as a top contender? The halter horse is judged on its conformation as an Arabian horse. I believe with good conformation, any horse can be a performance contender. Horses with less-than-ideal conformation can still compete. A top contender would depend on the horse, and its trainer. What are the subtle similarities and differences between looking at a purebred vs. a Half-Arabian halter horse? It varies. Off the cuff, my first thought would be its type. However, I have seen some Half-Arabians that you cannot tell they are not purebreds. Size may be the next thought, though once again, I have seen some very l arge purebreds.
What qualities are needed to make an exceptionally “pretty” halter horse? Type, neck, tail carriage, shoulder, movement … I think these days, it takes the whole package. Do you breed for or own halter horses with world-wide appeal? I believe we try to. There is a world-wide market, and we try to breed for an overall great horse that can have a job no matter what. Do you see other countries actively seeking American-bred horses for their programs, and if yes, why? We do. Other countries seem to want our American bloodlines to complement their breeding programs.
Milestone Arabians
If you could change one thing in the halter industry, what would that be? We would say for the overall Arabian horse industry, we would like to see less regional shows, to increase entries and competition; more auction and futurity programs; to have consistent rules regarding nominations; promotions for owners and breeders to make it more appealing to continue to breed; and show horses, particularly halter horses. What are the differences between a modern champion halter horse vs. a c hampion halter horse from 20 years ago? We would have to say the modern halter horse is more refined; heads are getting more and more “dishy”. But we see more of the old pedigrees being brought back into our breeding programs, which is very exciting. Ar abian Horse Times | 66 | Halter • 2022
As an Arabian HALTER horse enthusiast, what attracts you to this discipline? As breeders of Arabian horses, we try to breed a horse that’s as close to the breed standard that we can. Halter is a way to compare what you have bred to other breeding programs. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a class full of beautiful horses been showcased! How do you feel about this year’s qualifications going from a points-based system to a participation-based system? I definitely think we need to go back to some kind of qualification system. I wasn’t opposed to the point system, and a participation system to qualify seems very fair at this point. Should a halter horse with no desirable/ideal conformation traits for the performance arena be considered as a top contender? This is one of the biggest problems in our industry right now as far as I’m concerned, the division created by all of us! The breed has ONE standard and that’s what we should be breeding for. A horse with good conformation will be a good halter horse and a good performance horse. Halter horses should be athletic and able to be ridden, but also performance horses should be pretty and carry strong characteristics of the Arabian breed and standard.
Lucho Gumimaraes Arabians GRK Farms
What qualities are needed to make an exceptionally “pretty” halter horse? This is a very interesting question. I grew up listening to a quote… “there is a pretty horse and there is a good horse.” But a pretty horse should have a high level of overall quality like… dark skin, good color and hair coat, big black eyes and well-set curvy ears. Do you breed for or own halter horses with world-wide appeal? Always! We should always strive for the best quality when we are breeding. We are responsible for keeping the breed standard and improving the quality. A great horse should and will be appreciated by any horseman anywhere in the world. Do you see other countries actively seeking American-bred horses for their programs, and if yes, why? American horses have always had a huge influence in breeding programs around the world, and they continue to be an influence to this day. It’s important that we all search for different pedigrees and different qualities to complement our programs. It’s a worldwide market right now and the USA plays a huge part in it!

WHAT CLASS(ES) STOOD OUT TO YOU? MCCREA: We had lots of great classes! A favorite was the Half-Arabian Country Junior Horse Championship. A favorite horse was our Champion Half-Arabian Park horse, especially outside in the qualifying class! PRICE: The youth classes were very strong in all divisions this year. It is always impressive to see kids riding at a high level on high quality horses. DAMIANOS: Stand outs for me were the Arabian Western Pleasure Championship, Half-Arabian Hunter Pleasure Championship, and Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Jr. Horse. I felt bad I could only write down 10 numbers, because there was an arena full of excellent horses. I must say, we did not see a weak class all 10 days. ESSER: The amateur and youth classes were large and very competitive, not only in numbers but quality as well. The exhibitors did an exceptional job showing in their specific divisions. GAULT: ALL of the classes were incredibly competitive and packed with super horses, but one class in particular that was memorable for me was the Arabian Costume AATR Championship. It was a great class and the crowd was so involved. One rider won a fan favorite award which was so refreshing! STANDISH: Since my passion is in the English division, I really enjoyed judging the AEPA Country English Pleasure Maturity. It was a great group of horses and an exciting start to the show year. BULLOCK: Junior and Senior Mare Championships. CONNOR: For me, the entire session on Monday, when the championships for the International classes were held, was outstanding! I thought the overall quality was very high, and it was a real honor and pleasure to judge such beautiful horses! I must add that, I was also very impressed with the high level of competition in the Performance Halter division. CONSTANTI: The International breeding classes were my favorite classes to judge. It was a pleasure to see the very
high quality that was presented in these classes. I have had the privilege of judging breeding classes in many shows in other countries around the world, and it is interesting to compare in my mind the quality being presented from country to country. I applaud the quality that breeders in our country presented in these Scottdale International classes. Another highlight for me was working with such highly accomplished and experienced judges. It was my distinct pleasure to take center ring with Leslie Connor, Scott Brumfield, Steve Dady and Majdi Al Saleh. And I cannot fail to mention that our Ringmasters, Juan and Dennis, with their decades of experience, were truly masters at keeping our classes flowing smoothly. MORGAN: All of them really. So many great horses, beautifully presented. I was so impressed with all the trainer and handler presentations. I have always enjoyed seeing all the young horses “coming out” at Scottsdale. This year we saw a very strong group of halter horses, in particular, the Arabian yearling fillies and colts—some “off the charts” great individuals. POWER: Our Junior and Senior Champion Colt and Stallion were on par with the all-time greats! This group of horses was not only of excellent quality, but the handlers did an awesome job of presenting them with the respect and enthusiasm that the horses deserve. Both our front line and back line in the Stallion Championship were top notch! MCDANIEL: Having the pleasure of judging all the classes in Ring 8, home to the Trail classes and Cow Horse events, they tell me that the exhibitor numbers were up in the trail, and I saw many great runs in all divisions. The weather was also great weather for all these classes. The cow horse classes are a favorite of mine and they always draw a crowd of spectators. There were many great horses with exciting runs. EHRLICK: The Gambler’s Choice was a very exciting class in front of a full house.
Ar abian Horse Times | 247 | Volume 52, No. 7
HOW DID THIS YEAR’S PUBLIC ATTENDANCE COMPARE TO PAST SCOTTSDALE SHOWS OR OTHER SHOWS YOU’VE JUDGED? MCCREA: I think things are slowly getting back to normal. We had great crowds. It was a full house on Saturday night. PRICE: The Arizona Arabian Horse Association does an amazing job at promoting and getting the public to come to the horse show. The Scottsdale show is one of the best spectator shows that I attend all year. As a judge and/or an exhibitor, it is always more exciting to have a crowd of people enjoying the show. DAMIANOS: For attendance, I think the Scottsdale show is always the big one. There is no other show like it in any breed. Obviously, by the numbers, horse people were ready to re-emerge and attend in one way or another the “Greatest Horse Show on Earth.” Covid was a very unbiased monster. It affected everyone, one way or another. This year’s Scottsdale show was a testament to the resilience of the Arabian horse community. ESSER: I remember thinking to myself the first weekend of Scottsdale, how impressive the number of spectators there were in the stands, and into the last weekend, it was a full house. Very impressive. Nothing else compares. GAULT: Scottsdale has always been one of the highest attended shows, but it seems like this year was better than ever! I believe everyone was ready to get out and enjoy the fresh air, beautiful animals, and socialize again! STANDISH: I judged the Scottsdale show in 2019, and the pre-pandemic show consisted of a good crowd, but for 2022, it was a great crowd! The energy in the arena was exciting and made for a great show with packed seats. BULLOCK: Public attendance was definitely up in numbers from the past few years, but not back to its normal attendance success.
CONNOR: When I am judging, I’m not aware of how many people are in attendance, as I am totally focused on the horses I am judging. I did hear though, that there were good crowds at night in the Equidome. CONSTANTI: I have not judged, or even attended a horse show since returning home from judging the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship in mid-March of 2020. At that point in time, the Coronavirus pandemic was exploding around the world. Because of that, the show committee in Dubai had decided that they would not allow the public to attend. It was strange throughout the show to have it be so quiet and to see most of the seats remain empty. Some of the judges I worked with had received notification during the show that they would be required to go into quarantine when they arrived home to their countries, and we were all concerned that our flights home might be cancelled. To my relief, however, my flight took off from Dubai on schedule, but I decided I did not want to travel to judge abroad until it looked like the pandemic was safely under control. MORGAN: Nobody does it quite like the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Best run show in the world! The weather was wonderful, but best of all, the Wendell Arena was full of enthusiastic people watching and showing. There was great energy, and it was awesome to feel that the excitement was back! POWER: I think the ability to travel and compete at our horse shows has found a new appreciation and a renewed joy! Boy, did we miss the audience and the cheering. EHRLICK: There were more people.
Ar abian Horse Times | 248 | Volume 52, No. 7
WHAT IS YOUR MENTAL PROCESS FOR MAKING SURE YOU SEE ALL THE ENTRANTS AND PLACING YOUR TOP TEN? MCCREA: I tend to pick my top few horses early and check in on them throughout the class. First impressions are important. By the reverse, I have a pretty good idea how it’s going to go. The last trot is usually to confirm the top placings.
down my top numbers the first couple of laps, then put my notepad down and watch the entire class to sort out the placings. Some that made my initial list may fall off and others that may not have made my initial list may move up, depending on the entire performance.
PRICE: Every judge develops a system that works for them. I prefer to write down the exhibitors’ numbers as they come in the ring. This gives me the opportunity to look at every entry as they enter the ring and evaluate the quality in the class. I use the first way of the ring to start placing. I do not write a lot down on my paper as I prefer to watch the class as much as possible. By the time I call for line up, I like to have my entire class placed. Because I write down all the numbers in the class, I have either placed them in my top ten or marked them off. This way I know I have evaluated every horse.
BULLOCK: In halter we have the privilege of judging each horse individually, thus allowing us the ability to place the class with all entries having equal evaluation.
DAMIANOS: First of all, I make sure I see every horse come in the gate. That is an exhibitor’s one chance to make a good first impression. Then, when the gate closes, I start to judge. By the time they reverse I usually have, in large classes, my contenders sorted out. I like to use a clipboard with legal size paper which I break into four quarters. In the upper left, I write down the numbers of the horses I think are stars; below it are the numbers of horses that are possibilities of placing; upper right is for numbers that I feel are not in contention; and below them, the numbers of those that make large mistakes. Horses can move up or down in their category and can also move into a different quarter depending on circumstances. It is a system that has worked well for me for years. ESSER: This is a very good question, especially for me as a judge, because I take my position very seriously. It is crucial to evaluate each and every entry, knowing that it is so important to each exhibitor involved. My mental process is to study the class, spending about three quarters of it observing/studying the horses and how they are performing. Then having the equation develop the placement to my answer. Because each class is uniquely different, the equation has slightly different dynamics that can affect the end result placement. GAULT: Entrance is paramount. When classes are big and competition is deep, first impression means a lot. I write
CONNOR: Having judged the International classes and Performance Halter, those classes involved individual scoring, and the placings were tabulated for the judges. Most of the International championship classes were judged comparatively, and we only placed four. But, in the AOTH, JOTH, and Breeders Club classes, which were placed comparatively, I had the opportunity to walk the line to finalize all my placings, so every horse received a second look! CONSTANTI: I’m sure that all judges have their own mental processes that they follow to make sure each entrant is evaluated to the best of our ability. I showed for over 30 years before I received my Judges License, and during those years, I grew to appreciate and respect judges, whether I won or didn’t place, and felt they gave each exhibitor the same respect and an equal and thorough evaluation. From those many years of showing, I know how much work and expense it takes to get a horse trained, conditioned, groomed, transported and ready for a class. I get from that standpoint, that without exhibitors, there would be no shows. It is my personal goal to give each entrant the opportunity to perform to the best of their ability. MORGAN: When the horses enter the ring I note my first impression, in particular Arabian type and movement, followed by the walk around which I value greatly because a lot of important things are revealed. The individual presentation pulls it all together for a final evaluation. I take a fair number of simple notes to help me keep order to my process. How you organize yourself is critical. The final walk around is important to separate horses that are close in placing. Comparing those individuals is very helpful to make the best determination.
Ar abian Horse Times | 249 | Volume 52, No. 7
POWER: In halter I have a procedure where, as a horse comes up to me, I evaluate it fairly quickly. I put them into one of four categories: Excellent, Very Good, Average, and Below Average. I do this by giving them a score. 90’s is excellent, 80’s is very good, 70’s is average, and 60’s is below average. Needless to say, at a show like Scottsdale, I had very few 60’s. On the final walk around, if necessary,
I compare each of the horses in those categories to see if my first impression stands correctly. Was 98 really better than the horse that scored 95, and so on. I’ve used this system for years and it has yet to fail me. EHRLICK: I just pay attention and focus.
WHEN JUDGING, ARE THERE THINGS THAT DISTRACT YOU FROM FOCUSING ON THE JOB AT HAND? MCCREA: Not much really, I try to stay focused on the job at hand. PRICE: One of the biggest distractions is when a trainer is screaming at their amateur all the way around the ring. It’s one thing to advise their client while going by, but screaming across the ring, or all the way around the ring, is very distracting. DAMIANOS: Not a lot distracts me. I am looking at horses. Focus on the horse and it will tell you the story you need to know. ESSER: Distractions happen easy at times. I have realized early on in my judging career that total focus is the way to accurate evaluation. GAULT: Black number magnets make numbers very difficult to read. I noticed that several times and had to do a double take to make sure the numbers were correct. Also, excessive schooling with western horses is very distracting. STANDISH: One of the biggest distractions for me as a judge is over coaching f rom the rail, especially with a negative tone. Coaching should be done at home and the warm-up; no one wants to be talked down to while they are showing! BULLOCK: The biggest distraction in halter are handlers that want to push the limits of showing and show too aggressively. This year my panel did not witness any of that, which made our job of judging a lot easier and more pleasant. Excessive coaching f rom the rail is distracting and annoying as well.
CONNOR: When judging halter classes, I would prefer to not have all the bagging and shagging that often goes on outside before horses enter the ring. I think it is sometimes overdone, and, as a result, the handlers have difficulty controlling their horses when they are trying to trot them for the judges. CONSTANTI: I believe with experience, a judge learns how to focus and not be too distracted by activities outside of the ring. I actually enjoy crowd participation and music. To me, all of that adds excitement, energy and atmosphere to the show. MORGAN: I’m pretty focused. My only concerns would be if there is something causing an issue for the horses or exhibitors. The elements can create issues. And occasionally, another exhibitor or unruly horse, which would be quickly dealt with. POWER: I’ve never had a problem with distractions while judging, or even showing for that matter. The most important thing is my attention to the task at hand. Breeding decisions will be made because of my choices. Horses will move from one training barn to another because of my decisions. Someone may lose their job because of my decisions. Many, many people have worked tirelessly to teach and prepare these horses for the competition that I am judging. Each decision carries the weight of all those things. I know most all of my fellow judges carry that weight seriously and proudly, knowing the task at hand. EHRLICK: I do not get distracted because I block out everything else.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO REMAIN MENTALLY FOCUSED AND CLEAR WHEN JUDGING A SHOW AS LONG AS SCOTTSDALE (11 DAYS)? MCCREA: By staying focused on the job at hand, Scottsdale is really a pretty easy show. Usually, you only have morning and afternoon sessions, and classes are split up with other panels. It’s much more difficult judging the performance rotation at U.S. Nationals where you go 13-14 hours a day for nine days! PRICE: To stay focused, I highly recommend a big meal, a drink and a lot of laughs at the end of the day. Seriously though, the Scottsdale show is well divided among many judging panels; this gives plenty of down time to stay rested and focused. If there is time, I like to get a workout in. I find this clears my head and keeps me feeling good with all the sitting and standing there is. DAMIANOS: The first thing to staying focused is a good night’s sleep. Secondly, I had the opportunity to judge with nice and competent people; that makes things really easy. I try to remember something a clinician said at a judges seminar I attended once, “Know the rules, be prepared, and give a darn.” I think if you keep that perspective, the rest is easy. ESSER: Scottsdale with its well-designed schedule allows judges a nice break to stay mentally charged. It is important to approach every class with a new evaluation and open mind; giving every entry a new opportunity to rise to the top. GAULT: Scottsdale manages all of the judges very well. They schedule classes and panels in a manner where we can get a mental break and not wear ourselves out. Getting plenty of rest and taking time to clear your mind is an absolute must to judge a long show. STANDISH: I have a 4-year-old daughter, I’m used to running around all day with minimal sleep! BULLOCK: Plenty of sleep!
CONNOR: I judged seven days and I never felt stressed at all! It was a joy to get to judge such beautiful horses every day! CONSTANTI: A judge has a lot to think about at a show and during a class. I have found the best way for me to stay relaxed and focused is to be fully prepared and rested when I start a day of judging. It is a good idea to try to get to sleep early each night before judging the following day. Also, I always try to arrive at the hotel a full day prior to the beginning of any show. This is especially important for me when I travel abroad to judge. I try to provide a time cushion for the potential of flight delays, cancellations, and missed connections. MORGAN: Certainly 11 days is a long time. My panel had a 7-day schedule, so it was not difficult at all. I feel strongly about rest and preparation. I have my notes organized and my schedule prepared so I am always aware of my demands. The Scottsdale show is so well organized, and everyone is on their game, so we tend to lift each other up. Having great leadership and great ring men create a perfect formula for success. POWER: My previous answer applies her as well. There is so much relying on the decisions we make to take any of it lightly. That being said, there is a responsibility of the exhibitors to show us their horses to their best advantage so we can properly place them. We can’t find everyone; some of them have to find us. That doesn’t mean riding down the middle every pass but working the arena for an optimal spot. MCDANIEL: Scottsdale is one of the biggest and longest shows I judge. It’s interesting and exciting to see each horse go and I’m really rooting for them all to have great runs. EHRLICK: Love what you are doing and occasionally gaze into the view of the mountains.
Ar abian Horse Times | 251 | Volume 52, No. 7
WHAT DOES THE SCOTTSDALE ARABIAN HORSE SHOW DO BETTER THAN OTHER SHOWS YOU’VE JUDGED? MCCREA: They do an amazing job with that many horses and arenas going at any one time. It is a very fun show to judge! PRICE: They do a great job of organizing the entire show. It has to be a nightmare to schedule all those divisions and all of the judges, not to mention the big exhibit area. But one thing they do better than the rest is the advertising and ability to draw the pu blic into the show and expose them to the Arabian horse. DAMIANOS: The Scottsdale show just has their act together! They hire their judges early, they are on top of the travel arrangements, they give you a workable schedule, they issue clear communications on their expectations, they have staff that are genuine professionals, and they provide an environment that makes you feel like you are judging a big show. ESSER: Given the Scottsdale Arabian horse show has an impressive history, success, and prestige, they’ve kept their torch lit bright over the years. They have a tremendous marketing and promotional team that keeps this show changing with exciting and enticing programs, and continues to bring us together as a community to celebrate the Arabian horse. It’s also maintained itself as a favorite annual local community event, going out of the way to roll out the red carpet to local interested enthusiasts. GAULT: I can’t say enough about the Scottsdale show management, committee, and staff. It is run like a well-oiled machine in every way! They are the best at getting outside people to come in and experience our beautiful horses. It is managed like a true business and the result is SUCCESS! STANDISH: The Scottsdale show does a great job with having plenty of judges and panels. Not having to judge every single class back-to-back is refreshing mentally, even if it is only a short break. BULLOCK: The Scottsdale show is a model of perfect management, professional staff and friendly atmosphere. All of these qualities entice exhibitors to want to be there and enjoy their time with their horses. CONNOR: They truly run like a “well-oiled machine”! How Taryl O’Shea and her staff can manage such a huge undertaking with such precision is really remarkable! They go out of their way to make sure the judges have everything they need, and the exhibitors are treated with respect and care. It really lives up to its name as the “Greatest Horse Show on Earth!”
to appreciate judging at a show that runs smoothly. I’m sure that all shows have glitches, but an experienced show staff know how to handle them as they come. Under the seasoned and expert leadership of Executive Director Taryl O’Shea, Show Manager Matt Kwapich, their dedicated Show Committee and legion of volunteers, the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona proved once again that the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is arguably the “Greatest Arabian Horse Show in the World.” I am an “old timer” who showed when it was held at Paradise Park on Bell Road. Having shown in Scottsdale for over 30 years, it was a poignant moment for me when I walked out into center ring of the Wendell Arena this year for the first time as a judge. The photo I submitted is me with my grandson, who is four. This is the first horse show he has ever attended. I hope that he will be the third generation of our family to experience one day the thrill of competing here. MORGAN: Again, an exceptionally well-run horse show. The board members are completely committed to the Arabian horse and an event to perfectly showcase them. All the people working the show seem to have the same thought process. I have always felt when you surround yourself with good people, great things happen! I was blessed to work with Donnie Bullock and Jack Thomas on my judging panel. Our co-panel on the Signature classes were also great to work with. All horsemen and people that had their heart in the outcome. I was truly honored to be a judge this year. POWER: Scottsdale is able to put on Youth Nationals, Sport Horse Nationals and U.S. Nationals with 2,000+ horses all in 11 days with only five nights of evening classes. The judges and exhibitors get a chance to relax and socialize and enjoy the fellowship that made horse shows what they are supposed to be. A place to enjoy each other and compete … now that’s an advantage I’d like to see more of! MCDANIEL: Scottsdale really is the greatest show, and I couldn’t do my job without the excellent ring crew we had in Arena 8. They are organized, efficient and experienced, making my job easier. EHRLICK: They treat you with respect and are appreciative of you being there. They make you feel like it is a privilege to judge there, and it certainly is.
CONSTANTI: Like many judges, I have had the great fortune to judge widely around the world. One comes Ar abian Horse Times | 252 | Volume 52, No. 7

GET TO KNOW
Juliana & Rossana RUGGIRELLO …
What have Arabian horses taught you?
Juliana: Patience. They are forgiving when I error and forever gratifying when I succeed. Rose: They have taught me to trust in myself and give me confidence.
HOW LONG have you been interested in horses?
Juliana: My whole life, but acted on it three years ago when Signature Oak Stables built their barn in our neighborhood.
HOW DID you come to the decision that an Arabian was the horse for you?
We both were introduced and became enthralled with the breed through trainer, Kayleigh Meyer, and never looked elsewhere after the initial introduction.
WHAT STEPS did you take in getting involved with horses?
We asked questions about the barn and lesson program and Rob turned us over to Kayleigh for weekly and biweekly lessons which quickly turned into Juliana leasing, then buying RD Beyonni. I purchased Afires Starlin in 2021.
HOW HAS your experience with Signature Oak Stables and the community been going so far?
Juliana: It has been one in a million! The fact that my mom and I have never ridden a horse before, along with the trust and training of Kayleigh, this adventure has taught us both, and within one year, RD Beyonni and I achieved our first place championship at Region 14 in 2021. Rose: The Arabian horse community is full of welcoming and gracious people. We feel like we have been members our whole life with the way we have been embraced, regardless of our riding experience.
WHAT SERVICES does Signature Oak Stables offer that you are taking advantage of?
They cover all our horse training and boarding needs. They take great care of our horses and provide the best training and guidance we could ever ask for.
WHAT ARE your goals with your horses?
To have fun and compete. We trust the process and where it will lead us.
HOW DID you know RD Beyonni and Afires Starlin were the horses for you? Juliana: Between the pep in his step and his goofball attitude, RD Beyonni and I are a perfect match. I loved knowing that we will grow and learn together.
Rose: Afires Starlin is handsome, and I feel regal on him. He is comfortable, yet exciting to ride; and is good and safe. I am lucky to have a horse with great experience so I know that I will always have a trusted leader.
WHAT DISCIPLINE(S) do you show in and why did you choose them? Juliana: I currently show in hunter pleasure, but also showed saddle seat. It was great to feel the difference in the two disciplines. Rose: I am having a great time with saddle seat and look forward to my show debut this year.
What has been your favorite experience so far while being in the Arabian horse community?
Juliana: Showing in Wendell Arena and watching SF Afterschoc in the liberty class in 2021. Rose: Witnessing U.S. Nationals as spectators. I was and am forever hooked on the sport. Watching the riders, horses and trainers was exhilarating. I left there having no doubts about what I could enjoy and achieve as a rider and having my daughter do it all with me is the icing on the cake!
IF YOU WERE to offer any advice for someone who was thinking about getting involved with Arabians, what would it be? Be open minded. The Arabian horse, with all its beauty, is capable of so many riding styles.

This year at Scottsdale, we played our annual round of golf before the show started. Ty shows up with his arm swollen 4 sizes larger than normal (from being kicked by a horse that day).
