JosĂŠ Caio, the first Brazilian to finish in two different FEI rankings

8

Arabian Horse Intl

Champion in all categories that competed, José Caio began to stand out as one of the greatest promises of Brazilian endurance as of 2010. He is the only Brazilian endurance rider, until today, to complete 10 international races in a year and thus to enter the select Elite Group (in the Young Riders category) of the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). José Caio Frisoni Vaz Guimarães is the youngest son of Mia Frisoni and José Carlos Vaz Guimarães, owners of Haras Blue Grass. From the time he started, at the age of five, to participate in endurance rides with his father, he is undoubtedly responsible for the family’s dedication to the sport. Caio - as he is known nationally - is passionate about horses and endurance from an early age, which made the whole family return to the Equestrian Endurance once again, since his parents, José Carlos and Mia Frisoni; were one of the precursors of the sport in Brazil. Name, age and place of birth José Caio Frisoni Vaz Guimarães, 17 years-old, São Paulo - Brazil.

Tell us about yourself. I was practically born on a horse, I grew up in a stable where I live to this day in Sorocaba (a city of the State of São Paulo). I came with 3 days old to the haras. I’ve just finished school, now I’m getting ready to go to college. When and why did you start riding? My father has an import and exportation of horses company (Vazmar) and as I lived in the haras all the time, horse was my great pet. At 3 years old with my father Jose Carlos Vaz Guimarães and under the watchful eyes of my mother, Mia Frisoni Vaz Guimarães. At 5 years (2005) I did my first race of 20 km and then 40 km, always with my father. How and when did you know the Endurance?

ance race? Because living in the country, on a stud, I ride every day, I train a lot when I compete with my horses in the stables. I also do running and Cross Fit. One race has not yet competed and an unforgettable race. Florac and Tevis Cup are two events that I have not yet done and I have a lot of will. Fontainebleau was an impressive race, with several competitors, running in the same race in which the French team was chosen for the WECYR2017 and we managed to stay in 6th place. What was your most challenging endurance ride? The most challenging races were the two world championships (2015 and 2017), unfortunately the 2015 I did not finish, but in 2017 I was in 21st and 5th place by team.

I started with endurance in 2005 (I was 5 years old), my parents with my uncles brought the endurance to Brazil (in the rides they organized they followed the American model); so the sport was always there and I’ve always been in love. Tell us about your first horse. I learned to ride a horse with an Appaloosa horse called Bullmore that was my sister’s and she gave to me as a birthday gift. I grew up and started riding VG Fame, a mare who took me to my first 120 km and is still in the tracks with me. What was your greatest experience in Endurance? Choosing a race to say which my favorite is is difficult, each one is special. The world championships were the most tense, the start with several horses and riders. The Pan-American of 2017 was incredible like athlete (6º place in the individual and 3rd place per team). At the beginning of this year I ran the Brazilian National Championship CEI**120km Adult category and I finished in 2nd place, it was a very exciting race for me, and I ran this event in honor of my great friend Mark Ibañez. 10

How do you prepare yourself for the EndurArabian Horse Intl

Which horse has marked your trajectory, so far, in Endurance? Vermute Endurance and VG Fame marked my trajectory in endurance. Vermute Endurance and I had a short period together but it was very intense. VG Fame was the one who taught me everything I know about endurance, so she has a very special place in my heart. What titles have you won? I finished 3rd place in the FEI Endurance Young Riders World Ranking (2014 and 2017); 1st place in the FEI Endurance Young Riders Combination World Ranking with Zane Gray Endurance, that finished in second place in the FEI Endurance Young Riders Horse World Ranking (2017); 6 times champion of the Brazilian National Ranking of the Confederação Brasileira de Hipismo (CBH – Equestrian Brazilian Confederation); 2 times Brazilian National Young Rider Champion 120km consecutive years (2016 with Cabo Frio CSM and in 2017 with Zane Gray Endurance); Brazilian Vice Champion 120km Adult Category (2018 with Monalisa CRH); the youngest young rider in Brazil to become Elite member; Champion Copa Chile CEI* 80kmYR (2015); 3 times member of the Brazilian team; Bronze medal by team at Pan American Endurance Championship Uruguay 2017; Champion of the State of São Paulo and I won several times the Efficiency Trophy (awarded by the Paulista Equestrian Federation, of the State of São Paulo).

Besides Endurance, what do you do? I love being with my family and going out with my friends. A dream A dream of my sporting side is to be Pan American champion and world champion. Do you have any superstition when you compete? Every time I get on a horse I pray. Idols in endurance and life. In Endurance my idols are Karina Arroyo (the first Brazilian rider to finish first in a ranking of FEI among all modalities.) and the twice world champion Maria Álvarez Pontón. In my life Neymar Jr and Ayrton Senna.

Jane Radny wins Acharon Challenge CEI1* Ride

Norb Radny and Sandstorm Spellbound (left, 3rd place) and Jane Radny on Steel Poppy Regent (1st place and BC)

Saturday 5 May 2018. The rejuvenation of CEI competition in Western Australia was brought about by the recent Acharon Challenge, held in Collie, Western Australia. The first CEI held in Western Australia for 5 years, the ride was in tribute to the late West Coast Acharon (affectionately known as Acky). The world class stallion was sadly laid to rest two years ago, but it was wonderful seeing his progeny competing in his honour at this event. The Acharon Challenge saw 72 riders participating across CEN and CEI races, ranging from 20km to 80km courses. The ride saw Western Australia’s first introduction to electronic timing and this modernised system aided the smooth running of the event.

14

The CEI1* saw seasoned international competitors and strong domestic athletes new to CEI compete side by side. A 100% completion rate for this competition is a testament to the hard work and excellent horse management proffered by the competitors: Cara Allan, Joanne Van Uden, Sarah Dumbrell, Rachell and Lienca Nell, Norbert, Jane and Bec Radny.

Arabian Horse Intl

The first place position was taken out by Jane Radny and Steel Poppy Regent of West Coast Arabians, with Acky’s daughter West Coast Kia (ridden by Bec Radny) only seconds behind in a tight gallop finish. Steel Poppy Regent was awarded Best Conditioned Horse with a commendable time of 5:17:17. Collie is set to be the venue of the upcoming 2020 Tom Quilty Gold Cup, Australia’s prestigious National 160km event. The Collie tracks provided for beautiful ride along sandy and gravel tracks, over a mix of flat and undulating ground through farmland and forest. Whilst the riders woke to a frosty morning, the weather soon warmed allowing jackets and gloves to be removed before departing on the second leg. Collie is situated in the south west of Western Australia, 213km south of Perth (Western Australia’s capital), and 59km inland from the regional city of Bunbury. Given the resounding success of the weekend Western Australia congratulates those involved in the running and organising of the Acharon Challenge. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. 4 May 2018. The Gobi Desert Cup is a 480 kilometer endurance ride beginning outside Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. The challenge is focused on teamwork, horsemanship and immersion in the Mongolian culture as well as completing the marked course safely. thing you’ve got.” Camille Champagne.

Each participant arrives at camp and is trained for two days on the tack and horses in preparation for the race to begin. This also gives the participants the opportunity to meet officials and discuss the rules and safety guidelines. Each rider has six horses for the length of the trip, one per day. Ride Director and Co-founder Camille Champagne notes: “The challenge focuses on testing your endurance and horsemanship by managing the horses over 80 km in one day.” Throughout the course there are two veterinary exams: one at 40 kilometers and the second at the end of the day’s ride, at approximately 80 kilometers.

The Gobi Desert Cup is a humane endurance race and one that promotes the welfare of the native culture and their environment. Safety is of the utmost importance for both horses and riders. At the end of the day, riders and staff talk about their day while enjoying local fare in a nomadic Mongolian camp underneath the vast Asian sky.

“You may have what it takes, but it will take every-

Arabian Horse Intl

Throughout the year Camille and Mongolian veterinarian, Naranbaatar Adiya, work together to train native Mongolian horses and ready them for the race. They choose horses that do not have the appropriate conformation and muscle fiber for horse racing, and supplement the income of the local, nomadic people for two to three months of the year.

Camille Champagne As a resident of the Northwest Queensland Australia and CEI3* endurance rider, Camille Champagne is no stranger to challenges.

enges riders, body and soul

In 2016, Camille attended the longest and toughest horse race in the world only four months after being evacuated from another race due to a bad fall where she suffered a collapsed lung. It had a profound impact on her life. During her comeback race Camille fell in love with Mongolia, its people, and the horses. Connecting with leading Mongolian veterinarian, Naranbaatar Adiya, they founded The Gobi Desert Cup, which had its inaugural ride in 2017.

The Mongolian horse is a hardy animal whose breed is largely unchanged since the times of Genghis Khan. Horses play an extremely important role in the culture and many families have a horse for each member. While only semi-domesticated, they live outside throughout the year in all weather and temperatures, and travel with the nomads.

Camille says, “The goal is to support the slowly disappearing Nomadic people by creating jobs and income through hiring horses. We also want to share the beauty and authenticity of the nomadic lifestyle with the rest of the world through a life-changing adventure.“

While horse racing is the #1 sport, not all horses have the muscle fibers for speed and swiftness. The horses that do not make the cut are better-qualified for the marathon rides. Camille says, “We choose the ones that do not have the quality to race short and fast distances, which offers a second income to the herders/nomadic people. Those horses do very well over longer distance at a more conservative pace.” These are the horses that are trained for the Gobi Desert Cup challenge.

Mongolian Horses

About The Gobi Desert

Horses play a large role in the everyday lives of Mongolians, with a population of approximately three million, which outnumbers humans.

The Gobi Desert is the large desert region in Asia, stretching through Mongolia and China. The fifth largest desert in the world, it is home to many unique

breeds such as the snow leopard and the double-humped bactrian camel among others, including the Przewalski’s horse. Once extinct in the wild, this endangered species was reintroduced to Mongolia and may be found in areas such as the Khustain Nuruu National Park, Takhin Tal Nature Reserve, and Khomiin Tal. Camille Champagne likes to note to participants, “Whatever you are expecting to occur on any given day, Mongolia will have something different!” Temperatures vary greatly throughout the year and most locals will tell you to not trust the weather reports but dress in layers. Due to its northern location and height about sea level, the Gobi is known as a cold desert. Temperatures may plummet to -40 degrees Fahrenheit and snowfall is not uncommon during winter months. August weather may vary between an average of 76 degrees Fahrenheit during the day to 40 degrees F in the evening. Due to the potential for rain and high winds across the desert, dressing appropriately with long layers, hats, and handkerchiefs is a must. Kendall Moore, a rider from the 2017 inaugural ride notes, “It is truly the most character building challenge I have ever faced and overcome.” The riders face the grueling challenge of riding in a place of extreme temperatures, varying day to day and hour by hour. The Course The course for the Gobi Desert Cup may change each year and is announced only a few weeks prior to the

start. Daily checkpoints are arranged in advance and riders follow a marked course with regular checkpoints. While not affiliated with FEI, The Gobi Desert Cup does follow FEI guidelines and protocol for health and welfare. But the founders take ideas from everywhere to truly benefit horse and rider. “We use a point system inspired by American endurance,” says Camille, “First across the line gets a certain number of points, second place receives a bit less. These points accumulate daily. This is a horse-welfare measure so riders don’t try to push their horses to beat time.” The journey begins outside Ulaanbaatar where riders will meet and travel together to the training camp. Each day the riders have 12 hours to compete in the day’s trail. At the evening camp participants may relax and unwind together while enjoying local fare such as fermented mare’s milk or fermented camel’s milk with the local people. After six days the marked course ends near Dalanza

THE GOBI DESERT CUP Next Ride 22nd - 31st August, 2018

Each evening a special award and extra points go to “Best Managed Horse” for exceptional horsemanship. In addition, there is a “Sportsmanship” award for the rider that may have had a difficult day but pulled through with a smile and willing attitude. In the end, the winners are awarded based on the most points received over the length of the course. The Gobi Desert Cup is about facing your fears and pushing through them. While some riders may impress even themselves, others may learn be disappointed. Endurance riders know finishing safely in itself is a win but through The Gobi Desert Cup they will learn about life, and themselves, through a truly life-changing journey. Do you have what it takes to face the physical and mental challenges? There are only a limited number of spots left for the USA and Canada. In the Kõrvemaa competition participants from both Estonia and Finland put themselves to test in the beautiful and varied nature reserve. According to organizer Katrin Liiv the trails were made with a view to next year’s competition where they plan to host the Nordic Endurance Championships.

Both CEI1* and CEIY classes were also 80 km, with 7 duos participating in CEI1*. The winner of CEI1* was Kaisa Keerd on Nella (4:30:00 / 17.89 km/h), closely followed by Brenda Prantsi and Assmani (4:30:01 / 17.89 km/h). The third place went to Külli Taro on Bergama ox (4:50:25 / 16.63 km/h). The Best Condition award of the class was given to Assman.

“This time, the trails were one of the best in the history of the competition. We tried a few changes in the placement of holds keeping in mind next year’s Nordic Endurance Championships. This will be quite a challenge, but we are very hopeful,” Liiv said. Summery hot weather made the competition very hard. Thus, it was not the speed but clever tactics that determined the final standings. 12 competitors started the 80 km trail. Gold medal went to Lilian Schönberg on Fix (4:20:24

CEIY winners were Schönberg and Fix among 13 competitors. Fix also got the Best Condition award of the class. Anett Laever on Päike finished second (4:46:25 / 16.86 km/h). Eliise Laur riding Rossa were placed third (4:59:59 / 16.10 km/h). In national classes, Carmen Elis Martikainen and Sipsik won the 80 km ride (5:28:02 / 14.72 km/h) and the winners of 50 km were Liina Vatsa and Leonardo. Madle Sirel on Abellamy ox won the Pinifer Arabian Horse Cup for purebred Arabians over the same distance (3:02:55 / 16.73 km/h).

Ecuadorian Jose Daniel Andrade wins 160 km race in Uruguay Trinidad, Flores, Uruguay, hosted on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May, 2018, three FEI rides: CEI*** 160 km, CEI** 120 km and CEI* 81 km. This was the fifth race weekend of a total of 12 CEI competitions for the 2018 Uruguay Season, a racing season which runs almost the whole year round, ending in January. 60 horses hit the tracks on Saturday; tracks that are fast and make racing in Trinidad very competitive. At 6 am on the 26th, eight competitors left for the CEI3* 160km race that was divided into 5 loops of 38.5km, 38km, 36.5km, 28 and final loop of 15km. A leading group was pushing in the first loop at almost 21km/h, taking advantage of the cold weather. The weather changed dramatically during the day with a very hot third loop, unusual for this time of the year with high temperatures to almost 25 Celsius degrees.

22

Arabian Horse Intl

The first position was a battle between the Ecuadorian rider Jose Daniel Andrade, riding Quique LP, and Fernanda Villar riding Ashva Fire Fly; unfortunately she got eliminated in the fourth loop for irregular gait. The winner was Andrade with a ride time of 07:42:20 and average speed of 20.76km/h. “My crew team was superb and Quique LP is an excellent horse, he ran the race as a champion horse from the start. With this performance he gave me the qualification for the World Equestrian Games, said Andrade. Jorge Martinez riding S Shamah arrived second but was eliminated in the last vet check control. Finally, the second position award was for Cecilia Garcia riding TBO Rosa and third position for Florencia Bula riding GE Belen. Pedro Sosa on Baraka Nazir finished fourth.

“This was an excellent race, in the beginning we started fast; I maintained the speed I was planning to do. It was the mare’s first time to run this distance and she surprised me how good she did it. I am very happy with the result”, said Garcia. In the same day at 7:30 am 53 riders started for the CEI1* 80km race: Senior (33), Young Rider (19) and Junior (1). The track was divided in 3 loops of 33.5km/h, 28.5km/h and 19km. The Senior category was won by Martin Stirling riding LG Cariñosa with ride time of 03:24:37 and average speed of 23.75.km/h. In second place arrived Basilo Munoz riding La Negrita together with Charly Correa riding Ch Anera who was eliminated for irregular gait. Finally, Antony Austria riding JJL Garron finished in 3rd position. “Together with Alejandro Posadas, the trainer, we planed the race. The mare has a particular character, so I let her canter free the first loop and I tried to take advantage from the beginning”, declared Stirling.

Victoria Batista who gave me the chance to ride her”. Third position was for Baraka Naism with the top FEI Ranking rider Pilar Saravia. Junior race made the revenge to Teresa Sanchez who won with Tairona with an average speed of 24.83km/h. She told us: “The race was tough, the track is good for the speed but the hot weather made racing more difficult. Tairona is a strong mare, I pushed her in the last loop and she responded very well”. Teresa was lucky this day; arriving in first position was the Chilean rider Paula Lorenz with SV Sultan who got vetted out in the last control for irregular gait. The Sanchez’ took best positions in the Junior CEI1* 80km finishing first and second with a final average speed of 24.72km/h. The three Sanchez brothers arrived together at the finish line, winner was Ema Sanchez riding LCE Aymarucha and second placed her younger brother Joaquin Sanchez riding Los Tortillas Pedro . In third position arrived older sister Teresa Sanchez riding Gemma sadly being eliminated by irregular gait. “This is one of the best races I did. It was amazing to ride with my siblings; it was fun and a very nice experience. My mare was trained by Leonardo Zubiaurre, his team and I are very thankful I got the opportunity to ride the horse in her first CEI1* 80km without any problems”, said the happy winner Ema Sanchez. Third podium place was for Santiago Fernandez with an average speed of 23.16km/h. The race on Sunday, CEI2* 120km, was divided in 4 loops 33km, 33km, 33km and final loop of 21km. Winner of the race, one of the favorites to complete the Uruguayan team in Tyron, was Isha Judd. (She finished fifth in the Samorin World Championship) Isha was riding JQ Zarial, the same mare who took her to the World Championship. They were leading the race from the first to the last loop with an average speed of 23.55km/h. In second place arrived Constanza Casterbajac riding Shara Love, she maintained the second position throughout the whole race. She told us: “We knew Isha would set the speed and I tried to follow her, we started all the loops together. In the last vet check we got a penalty but this did not stop us to arrive in a good position. I am very thankful to Jorge Gadea and

CEI 3* CASTELSAGRAT – FESTIVAL M7

channelling the young’s enthusiasm.

Located in the Occitania area, Castelsagrat is a very charming little village, but also the place of a famous endurance race. Famous because of its magnificent landscapes but for its very high tecnical level too.

All the volunteers were wearing a pink polo shirt. The colour had not been randomly chosen. This colour is a tribute to Franck’s wife who died of cancer. M7 financed part of this polo shirts.

Let’s have a look at one of the unmissable rendez-vous of the french endurance. After a beginning of the race in the back, Tarzibus once again showed that the boss, this is him! Not only he wins for the 2nd time the mythic race of Tarn & Garonne, but this is his 3rd victory in a row in a CEI 3* 160 km! After leading for 145km, the Bahraini Raed Mahmood had to put his feet on the ground to relieve Razam, staring at Jean-Philippe Frances and his alien Tarzibus on their way to victory. They will complete the race 18.30min ahead, Tarzibus having galloped in the drops with a disconcerting ease. For the Bahrainis, this race was the opportunity to confront with Tarzibus and also to test their horses in the run-up to the next WEG in Tryon, in September. For the first time, M7 was the partner of this race which make possible to give prize money to the riders. M7 pleased everyone, especially the organizing comittee who made the riders happy: 26,000€ prize money, raffle with superb prizes (2 holidays for 2 people in Dubaï, Iphone, Setzi saddle). Some partners spontaneously came on it to offer bridles, thalassotherapy for horses, semen. On Friday night, hudge dinner was offered by M7: 500 people were invited. «Castelsagrat is a buddy race, a village race, collegial. Decisions are made by us 3, with JeanJacques Donzelli, Franck Verbrugge and I. We want to keep our identity and this was one of the terms of this partnership. It went tremendously well. Our interlocutors from M7 were very respectful; no requirement on M7’s part. In the CEI3*, 20 riders received a prize money: 3,000€ for the winner and 100€ for the 20th», explain Anne Donzelli, the show secretary. Note the very good initiative from Lucie Loevenbruck to give the same prize money (150€) to the 20 first riders in the CEIYJ 2*. A good way to

A TOP EFFECTIVE COOLING ZONE! Another innovation is the 3 ways cooling zone: 2 fast lines where horses were not allowed to stop, and another one for those who needed more times before the vet check. Besides a smoother flow, the absence of «fighting» to find a place, the obligation to take the saddle off before getting in this zone, nobody had wet feet due to the ground which was covered by permeable carpet. With 17 countries, 300 horses entered in the 9 races, this 2018 edition of the M7 – Castelsagrat race confirme its technicality with a partner who accept the organizers values, some very available volunteers and fully involved, we can think that endurance can still be a beautiful discipline. The curtain came down, but M7 has already promised his support for 2019, with certainly some nice surprises! The results of each race are: CEI3*** 160 km: Jean Philippe Frances with Tarzibus (08:45:05 and 18,283 km/h), Raed Mahmood with Razam (09:03:35 and 17,661 km/h. Ama Elite: Juliane Chassagneux with Urbanne Jiem (11:20:56 and 14,098 km/h). CEIYH1 * 100 km: Camille Coulomb with Beau Gosse Suleiman (05:37:00 and 17,804 km/h), Louise Bayle with Bucephale Larzac (05:37:01 and 17,803 km/h). CEI1* 80 km: Elisabeth Hardy with Violette de Bonance (04:02:20 and 19,807 km/h), Alisson Armagnac with Venise des Ormeaux (04:04:24 and 19,640 km/h). CEI2** 120 KM: Laetitia Glorian with Aigoual Embrun (06:19:50 and 18,956 km/h), Thibaut Launay with Ritchie (06:27:41 and 18,572 km/h). CEIYJ2** 120 km: Marie Charles with Tyah (06:33:20 and 18,305 km/h), Emilie Guillemin with Sahara de Messey (06:33:21 and 18,304 km/h). All the results on www.atrm-systems.fr Arabian Horse Intl

Royal Windsor Endurance, supported by The Kingdom of Bahrain, provided another memorable day of sport, and Bahrain itself celebrated a win in the CEI2* with HH Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa riding Vipper De Luriecq coming in first in a time of 05:04:48. Portugal took top honours in the CEI1* with Rui Pereira riding a sublime three laps on Bloodie Mary finishing in 03:33:13. The UAE riders Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum riding Alandar (05:04:49 and 23,621 Km/h) and Saeed Mohd Khalifa Al Mehairi riding Mureib (05:04:52 and 23,617 Km/h) finished second and third places respectively. Sheikh Nasser thanked His Majesty for his continued support to sports in Bahrain in all sports, especially endurance, in which Bahrain has made tremendous progress. He also congratulated His Majesty and Queen Elizabeth II, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, United Arab Emirates Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, for his third victory in the history of Windsor Power Races. “It was an absolute pleasure to be able to ride in Windsor Great Park today and to be able to shake hands with her Majesty the Queen. What a pleasure, aside from winning; to come here and raise my flag and perform. I’ve now won three out of six races here so I’m at 50%!” said HH Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The Portuguese Rui Pereira riding Bloodie Mary completed the 80 km in 03:33:13 with average speed of 23,075 km / h. In second place Al Subaie Ali Abdulla Mohamed of Bahrain with El Shakir Mutaz (03:44:36 and 21,906 Km/h) while the British Ann Dark Carri with HS Drift took third place (03:50:56 and 21,305 Km/h). “The ride is one of the most important races in Europe today for all that it represents. We entered Ascot Racecourse and galloped around, and in the Windsor Castle gardens which are gorgeous, and Windsor breathes horses. I went to the race with the idea of always trying to win. The mare recovered very well always and I was never able to let the Bahrain riders flee. At the start of the last stage I was second to 30 seconds from the first and felt that the battle for the first place would be 34

between us. We set a very strong pace and we got to the sprint. I lost the sprint because the other horse is a Tidjani and these seem to have a second speed. My mare recovered quickly and I saw that the other horse did not recover and the support team was worried. When they went to the vet check the horse was lame and was eliminated. It was not the way I wanted to win, but it is part of the rules, “said Pereira. Of the 31 sets that started in CEI1 *, only 15 reached the third and final stage. 16 sets were eliminated or opted to retire. Following the announcement of the official results, HM King Hamad, as well as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, who also attended the race, congratulated HH Shaikh Nasser for his vic-

tory, the third of its kind at the international Royal Windsor Horse Show. This was the sixth Royal Windsor Endurance event, and for the second year running a CEI1* 80Km and a national 40Km graded endurance ride ran alongside the regular CEI2* 120Km. A record 125 horses from 18 nations set off in near perfect conditions to take on the challenging tracks of Windsor Great Park, and the FEI classes started with a dash along the iconic home straight of Ascot Racecourse. Great British riders were out in force today, and 68 were entered across the three classes. One notable success was Carri Ann Dark from Wiltshire, who finished a brilliant third in the CEI1* on former Team GB Gelding, HS Drift. “I came because I love riding here at Windsor and I had absolutely no expectation of doing so well. He led for a while on the second loop but always presents slowly and we set out for the final loop on our own and I hardly saw anyone out there. I was glancing at the statues around the Park (and I’d even filmed us riding through Ascot Racecourse first thing!) I am absolutely delighted with our result and can’t believe I’m going to be in the Castle Arena at Royal Windsor Horse Show tomorrow for the presentation!” said Dark.

Royal Windsor Endurance Director, Nick BrooksWard, said: “It has been a very special day for Royal Windsor Endurance with World Champion bronze medalist HH Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa winning the CEI2* and Carri Ann Dark doing so well in the CEI1*. It was a special day for Great Britain all round with so many starters and great results in the CEI1*. The rider feedback I get is that it’s a thrill to ride in Windsor Great Park and we were delighted to welcome 18 nations here today.” Endurance GB Chairman, Nikki Thorne, said: “I’d like to thank the sponsors, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the organisers, HPower for its on-going sponsorship of EGB. We really enjoy hosting overseas riders at British events and it was super to see the home competitors doing so well in such an international field and in particular placing third to sixth in the CEI1*. Well done to those of us that finished the CEI2* although we were a little late! It was a challenging and true ‘endurance’ course today, but really well ridden with good horse welfare in testing conditions. The cool, breezy weather in the vet gate made it hard to recover horses and the fact there were no equine injuries is a true testament to all the riders that finished.” Thorne continued: “For me personally it was a Arabian Horse Intl

poignant day as it was Crazy Girl’s last FEI event and it was so very special to bring her here to ride in Windsor Great Park before retiring.” President of the Veterinary Commission, Hannah Kelly, said: “We had an experienced Veterinary Commission today who were really consistent in their approach to assuring that the welfare of the horse was paramount. In doing so we delivered a successful ride with superb performances by winning horses, riders and crews. The blustery conditions were challenging but I am pleased to report that all horses are fine and fit to travel home today.” Source: http://everythinghorseuk.co.uk Photo: RWHS / Peter Nixon

Marino is Brazilian ampion again! in the 160 km

First Stage of Chevaux Endurance Cup also featured the Brazilian National Championship of 160 and 60 km in Brasilia Country Club Less than a month after winning the Brazilian National Championship in the 120km, with Al Saida Larzac, Pedro Stefani Marino, this time riding RG Komo, dominated the 160km race, divided into six loops, to win the title unheard of the category and to become the first Brazilian to win two important titles in the 30 years of the sport in Brazil. At 5 in the morning, eight binomials left in pursuit of the most important national title of the year. In addition to claiming the title of Brazilian champion in the 160 km with total ride time of 08:19:04 and average speed of 19,476 km / h, the representative of São Paulo, Pedro Marino and RG Komo also won the Best Condition trophy of the proof. And the story was repeated, because during the six stages the dispute was fierce with Jose Caio Vaz Guimarães and Chambord Endurance, as well as in São Paulo, but the young Caio’s horse was eliminated in the last veterinary inspection by irregular gait, in this way the second place and the runner-up was with Felipe de Azevedo Morgulis and Saiph SBV. “I was happy and surprised at the same time, but very flattered to have managed to win the 160km Brazilian championship after 24 years of hard work and become FEI’s elite rider. It is a great joy; good emotions with a lot of energy to try to get a medal in WEGs, Tryon All this was done as the focus of the year to show that we really were ready to represent Brazil. I started the preparation last year, I prepared everything we imagined and prepared myself this year: win with Al Saida Larzac and with RG Komo. I have to thank all of my team who have worked tirelessly and hope to crown with an unprecedented medal. I know it’s difficult, we may not be able to, but we’re going to stand up and fight equally with everyone,” said Marino. At 9 am dropped the competitors of CBEE Short Distance 60 km, Senior and Young Riders categories. Among the adults, the winner was Pedro Marcelino Júnior who rode Samir Rach, followed by Luciana Matsunaga Higawa and Daredevil Rach (runner-up); Luciana Amorelli de Albuquerque with Lotus and Rafaela Pantel with Patna do Bom Viver finished third and fourth respectively. Juliana Silva Martins with Perenna Rach was the only competitor in the Young Riders category and with the victory she won the title of Brazilian Arabian Horse Intl

maintained the second position from the first stage and this way secured the second place followed by Eliton de Paula Junior with Mantineu Rach.

The first Stage of the Chevaux Cup also debuted the category Beginners, with a course of 20 km for those who are starting in the sport. Once again, the Endurance Experience project was present and the participants, in addition to having more contact with the Endurance, won great positions in the race. At 6 am, dropped the participants of the CEI** 120 km race, divided into four loops, Adult category and 15 minutes later the Young Riders. Profoundly familiar with the trails of Brasília Country Club and excellent endurance rider, Mariana Damazio Rajão, who set up CP Salomé, led the race from the start and won the first place with ease. She completed the 120 km in 06:57:06 and average speed of 17,406 km / h. Rogério Rodrigues Silveira with Sheeha Rach 40

The only competitor in the Young Rider category, Rodrigo Storani Saliba, with Mozart, can enjoy the beauties of the track and without worrying about other competitors he made a quiet race and completed the 120 km in 07:49:54 with an average speed of 15,450 km / H. At 8 am started the competitors of the CEI * 80 km Adult competition, divided in three stages. Ederson Fernandes da Costa with Hungares Endurance led from the first loop and was the champion (4:05:05 and 19,584 km / h). Second was Eduardo Xavier Barreto Júnior with Cabo Frio CSM (04:08:35 and 19,344 km / h). Yet the suspense was for the dispute of the third place in sensational sprint between the French

with Halinne DC (20km Beginner Young Rider) and Joel Morais Souza with Cantor-795 won the Paraendurance race 10km.

In the Young Riders category only two competitors: Jorge Henrique Oliveira Sena with AF Jidaara and Diogo Martins with Guignard da Capital. Sena completed the first two stages in second place, but run a faster last loop, beating Martins with 1minute and 51 seconds difference. In the race CEN 40 km Short Distance (two stages), Alexandre Gonçalves de Araújo with Elegancja El Emir was the winner in the Adult category, while Gustavo Alves dos Anjos who rode Farraj was the winner in the Youth category and Silvio Roberto Gonçalves with CP Dama in category Heavy Weight. Winners of the Controlled Speed races were: Antonieta Martins Alves with RT Polywak (40 km Adult); Natsumi Malena V. Kawahara with Dom Carter (40 km Young); Antônio Carlos Maito with Real Dancer (25 km Adult); Kavã Mateus Siqueira de Andrade with Mirza (25 km Young); Delfin Loureiro de Queiroz with Shadall Torch HMA (20 km Beginner Adult); Evelyn Cristine Lima Vieira

“Organizing the Brazilian Equestrian Endurance Championship is always a great challenge and satisfaction. In the race on May 26, the title race was in the categories of 60km and 160km. As organizers, our main concern is to do everything possible so that the technical part of the race runs well and the riders have safety and tranquility to give their best on the track. Brasilia Country Club contributed a lot hence we could achieve this goal. The club’s infrastructure, the familiarity that the riders already have with the venue, all made it a beautiful event, even with the unforeseen incident caused by a truckers strike. Pedro Marino’s race was flawless and his excitement spread to everyone. It was a podium with a Brazilian Championship face of 160km. We are always very happy to be part of important moments of the sport, like this one.” Said Dudu Barreto, organizer of the event. Text: Cidinha Franzão Photos: J.C. Third Stage of São Paulo Championship also featured the National Endurance Competition of 160 km (selection ride for WEGs in Tryon), 120 km and 80km. 160 km was held at Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, Jaguariúna, São Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday 16 June 2018. Better known in Brazil by Barrel championships that are held there, Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Farm (FNSL) is now also one of the favorite places for endurance events. With flatter tracks, excellent infrastructure and cordiality, FNSL has become one of the favorite places of Brazilian endurance riders and will host the V Stage of the São Paulo Championship from September 7 to 9. At 5:30am on 16 June, the competitors of the CEI3* 160km (divided in six stages of 34 km, 32 km, 27 km, 27 km, 23.5 and 17 km), gathered for the most important ride of the day because it was the last opportunity to get selected for the 2018 WEG Brazilian Team. André Vidiz riding the mare Bondgirl Endurance has dominated the race since the start and completed the 160 km with a total ride time of 07:41:40 and an average speed of 20.86 km / h, setting a speed record in a three-star race in Brazil and with the victory he completed his 24th race of 160 km.

Ana Carla Maciel who rode the stallion Moscou Endurance maintained the second place near Vidiz, and sometimes the two rode together. She completed the course in 07:44:10 with an average speed of 20.75 km / h, also a speed record for a stallion. Furthermore Ana Carla’s horse won the Best Condition award. Third was Giulia Messina Santos with Magdan Raissa (08:21:14 and 19.21 km / h), followed by Fernando Gonçalves Costa, from Brasília, riding Floripa Endurance (08:38:00 and 18.59 km / h) and completed his 20th race of 160 km. “It was a evaluation ride. The conditions were very good, the floor great and the weather perfect. And she ran in a rhythm that we are not accustomed to in Brazil because normally it is not possible. During the race I discovered my mare and she reacted very well at this speed which allowed me in the end to do the last fastest loop of my life. Luckily everything went well and the mare proved much better than I knew she was. It was a race to try out and do things I had never done before but it all worked perfect, “said Vidiz. “Today I completed my twentieth race of 160km. It was a great satisfaction and joy. I have to congratulate my team. Earlier this year we planned three 160km races in the first semester. The main objective was the selection for WEG 2018. But we realised that if we were successful in all of them

we would complete the 20th 160km race. We always strive to improve our results by raising average speeds in 160km races. For this last ride of the semester I rode the mare Floripa Endurance, which in her first competition of 160km achieved a spectacular average of 18.7 km/h, higher than expected by us. All this was only possible thanks to full-time dedication of the entire team. I dedicate this achievement to my wife and veterinarian Mariana Damázio Rajão.” said Costa. At 6:30 in the morning the participants of the CEI2* 123km ride (divided in five stages of 32 km, 27 km, 23.5 km, 23.5 km and 17 km) started and 15 minutes later the Young Riders took off. The victory of Luiz Felipe Pupo Galvão Rossi came to a surprise, riding Tarik da Barra, in his first race in the Senior category. The set completed the track with total ride time of 05:55:55 and an average speed of 20.74 km/h. Representatives from Brasília, brothers Rafaela Moreira Barreto with Avignon Endurance (06:15:00 and 19.68 km/h) and Rodrigo Moreira Barreto with Champagne Endurance (06:27:15 and 19.06 km/h) rode together and finished in second and third place respectively, followed by the rider from Minas Gerais, Gabriela Carvalho 44

Moreira de Abreu who mounted Taybe El Dinar (06:47:36 and 18.11 km/h). “It was an amazing win for us. It was my first 120km race in the Senior category and also the first race of Tarik da Barra. Our expectation was to do a good race and take the horse back home in good conditions. However the speed and stamina of the horse surprised us at every loop, even knowing its potential, and we managed to impose a comfortable pace which was quite high from start to finish. It was an incredible race and I am very grateful to the team Le Domaine: Toninho (Antonio Machado) and Aude, owners of Tarik da Barra, for having entrusted me with this incredible horse and giving me the opportunity to achieve this victory.” said Rossi. The Young Riders race was quiet until the end, as they were only three participants: Fernanda Carvalho Moreira de Abreu with All Fire TGS (06:40:16 and 18.44 km/h), Elisa Penna Chaves with Violeta HEB (06: 40:19 and 18.44 km/h) and Rodrigo Storani Saliba with Pelleus Rach (06:42:59 and 18.31 km/h) who decided to race together. However the final surprised everyone. In the last kilometre the three of them decided to battle for victory in a sensational sprint that enchanted everyone. More or less in the final 50 meters realizing that

his horse would not have enough breath, Rodrigo Saliba slowed down and left the dispute between Fernanda and Elisa. “The Jaguariúna track is a very flat and very good trail to run, but the speed is the challenging point of the competition. Because it is a trail with few “challenges” the tendency is to increase the speed and there is the key point, because we must listen to our horses more than ever and, especially, know their limit. I did the race without much concern in winning, or taking the lead. I just wanted to finish with the horse in good condition as he had just recovered from a problem he incurred two years ago. As there were only three competitors in the category, we did the race together from start to finish, without rushing and without pressure. In the last loop we continued together until in km 9, more or less, Elisa and I decided that when we reached the last km we would expect to pass the strongest gaps, which was the wisest because the horses would already be more worn and we would not run any risk of them being lost or falling, and then we would dispute the first place. Rodrigo did not express himself. I believe he did not listen to what we agreed, because he was a little behind us. And then in the last kilometre Rodrigo took

Luiz Felipe P G Rossi and Tarik da Barra

the attitude of starting the fight before the point where I and Elisa had agreed upon and we both went to sprint as well. Elisa was a head in front of me and in the last few meters I managed to pass, winning the sprint, as well as winning the Best Condition. All three horses and competitors finished very well and, in my view, we all deserve the first place.” Said the young Fernanda Abreu. Participants of the CEI1* 82.50km race (divided into four loops of 32 km, 27 km, 23.5 km and 17 km) departed at 7:30 and the CEN1* ride started at 8:15. In the Senior category of the international race, Águeda Yoshii with Valente HEB (03:55:06 and 21.05 km/h and Best Condition) and Renato Moraes Salvador Silva with Bint Balin Trio (03:55:53 and 20.98 km/h ) alternated the first and second places throughout the race until in the descent of the final 400 meters they decided to battle for first position. Yoshii’s horse was more willing and cleared away from Salvador in the last few meters and this way they crossed first. Salvador with Bint Balin Trio ended in second place followed by Lucas Ferrei-

They made the entire ride together, yet in the last kilometre Toledo slowed down, leaving the victory for Abreu. In the CEN1*, Renato Quagliato Alves de Almeida who rode Dgenzir El Dinar (03:52:39 and 21.28 km/h) finished the first loop in second place and Guilherme Diniz de Almeida with Bint Petra (03:59:18 and 20.69 km/h) first. Pedro Pablo Gómes Martínez wins in Casablanca Text: André Álvarez and Cidinha Franzão Photos: Francisco Boetsch Tagle

Internationally renowned for its vast wine production, the Casablanca Valley is nestled between the coastal mountain range and the Pacific Ocean in the valleys of central Chile. Just 45 minutes from Santiago and Valparaíso, this fertile valley is characterized by a refined production of white wine and its Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. This competition, programmed from 20 to 120 km, was carried out on 25-26 of May, with the participation of 143 binomials divided into 13 rides, near the Perales dam, a natural source of water for the wildlife of the area and for our horses; a magical rural setting surrounded by vineyards and native trees such as Maiten (Maytenus magellanica), Quillay (Quillaja saponaria), Peumo (Cryptocarya alba) and Boldo (Peumus boldus). Until the vineyard came great horses with experience in the distance and young promises that come to prove the category. The speed and the track played havoc, separating the group until the definition on the last lap. At 7:30 in the morning, the competitors of the CEI2** 120 km; divided into four stages of 40 km, 30 km, 30 km and 20 km; Senior class were dropped and at 7.45 the Young riders. Pedro Pablo Gómes Martínez who rode AS Violeta completed the race at 05:31:00 with an average speed of 21,75 km/h. David Ramirez Fuentes with Perseverancia Blaz (06:04:32 and 19.75 km/h) finished second. The two riders alternated positions in the four stages. Fuentes completed first in the first two stages and Martínez in second, but he was faster in the last two stages and won the event with 33 minutes of difference. Juan del Canto Manterola with HF Algarrobo finished third.

“This mare, AS Violeta (Cimarron x India) through whose veins run old bloods of our continent, which have been selected by us, could cope with speed and heart to the race staying with the first place of 120 FEI in the Estancia El Cuadro. Winning is the consequence of teamwork. ‘If only you try hard, you can win a game and strive group can win championships.’ The team of AS Violeta is made up of 8 people, counting from those who saw her born, until today that has a nutritionist, masseur, dentist, blacksmith, veterinarian, plus all those who are pending in the day to day that you can develop your workouts efficiently. After two years of slow preparation, but without stumbling, she won 1st place in the FEI 120 km race at Estancia El Cuadro. It is a pride for us who saw her being born in the house, seeing her today galloping for 120 km. We want to congratulate for our race our main opponent, David Ramirez who on the reins of Perseverancia Blaz gave an example of strategy and courage. I cannot stop mentioning Eduardo Baeza and Romina Godoy, who support me, help and accompany me with responsibility and passion in this work that is sometimes ungrateful but when it pays, it pays for it. Thank you very much everyone!” Said Martínez. In the Young Riders category, Argentine sisters Camila Sánchez riding CL Corsario (05:35:28 and 21.46km / h) and Selene Sánchez with Perseverancia Pupi (05:35:30 and 21.46 km / h) made and finished the race together. Third was the Chilean Domingo Spoerer Vergara with Pukawel Adventurer. “My name is Camila Sánchez and I’m from Toay, La Pampa, Argentina. In the first instance, I would like to thank Hans Buckel with all my heart for always inviting us and David Ramírez, who both lend us their horses. I loved being able to compete in El Cuadro, their tracks are a bit more challenging than those in Argentina and of course I liked Arabian Horse Intl

sharing with their endurance people since they all received us very well. I found the race a bit difficult, since there are many slopes both downhill and uphill that I’m not used to. My training sessions are on sand and flat floors, this adds a lot of new experience, at the same time I was able to share the whole race with my little sister Selene Sánchez who obtained the second place in the same category. Given this opportunity I am grateful to have run to Perserverancia Máximus in my first world cup and today to be knowing your circuits “, said Camila Sánchez. At 9 am, departed the participants of the CEI1* 80 km and CEN 80 km Senior category, divided into three loops of 30 km, 30 km and 20 km, and the Young Riders departed at 9.15. Diego Bulnes Labra riding Katano was the winner of the 80 km international race and completed the track at 03:30:24 with an average speed of 50

22.81 km / h. The Spanish Hector Vilaplana with Dominga dominated the first two stages but finished second (03:30:32 and 22.8 km / h) followed by Juan Eduardo Cox Vial who rode MP Luna. Among the Young Riders, Francisco Eguiguren Valdés with Amistoso (04:07:53 and 19.36 km / h) was the winner followed by Alvaro Cox Mujica with Bandolero (04:13:28 and 18.94 km / h) and representative of Uruguay, Diego MC Alister riding Yaah (04:41:51 and 17,03 km / h). “As always, Estancia El Cuadro gave us, once again, a race of great category. A very good track, where being so well known for the endurance allows us to run it in a more organized way, knowing where we can impose speed and where to keep the horse. In this way, for me, the race was very good, where the preparation of the horse by the team owner of the horse was noticed, which was decisive to be able to finish the last loop at 24 km

/ h; On the other hand the track helped us in what it could, since we were looking for the hill to take advantage of the horse’s qualities, so we finished the race in the best way winning the first place in the 80km YR category and to review In the first place, the horse won the Best Condition in its first race of the category. Thank you very much to the owner, trainer and all who contributed to get this great achievement,” said Valdés. In the 80 km National Senior category, the winner was Ernesto de la Puente with Maite Lucy (03:57:40 and 20.2 km / h), followed by Sebastian Salinas with HF Barii (04:14:41 and 18.85 km / h) in second place and José Pedro Varela Alfonso who mounted LL Jet Black (04:15:33 and 18.78 km / h) in third place. “How to live a race! From the moment of registration for the race of El Cuadro, you start to live each day stronger the passion for this sport, your thoughts go as soon as they can to review every detail that you should consider and especially how prepared your horse is for the race. You get up early the day of the race, which you waited with anxiety and some nerves, to get to the beautiful Estancia el Cuadro, surrounded by those spectacular vineyards covered with all the shades of yellow, red and brown, thanks to autumn. The start with more than 35 horses leaving for a route of 80 kilometers is always something disturbing ... especially if your horse is very spirited. The cir-

cuit is excellent, good floor, it is appreciated how well marked the tracks and the assistance points. If you’re lucky you can see a fox sneaking around. During the race you feel your horse, you know that he is fine and you remember the work of your team and especially the grooms who dedicated hours to his care. And you think you can win. After having traveled several kilometers, you nervously face the Vet Check where you can see how prepared your horse was and how much you took care of him in the circuit, and that you hope you did not have a bad step. When the veterinarian approves your horse, the joy and relaxation is indescribable. Finished the race you stop to value everything that this sport gives you; great friends, contact with nature, love for horses, coexistence, etc. In summary, your soul is happy,” said De La Puente. Among the Young Riders, Carlos Silva Escobar with Hady was first placed followed by Macarena Suazo Cepeda with CL Katana and Tomas Garrido Ruz with SI Padme in second and third places respectively. The winners of the other races were: 60 km Senior - Paula Fuentealba Montebruno with Shytan; 60 km YR - Emilia Patterson with Sofanor; 40 km Senior - Maria Cecilia Godoy with Kimal; 40 km YR - Martina Rodriguez with Jamas and 20 km Promotional - Josefina Sanchez Labbe with Loma Verde Obama.

A new sport is born in Brazil: Equestrian Triathlon

Equestrian endurance has strong athletic component! Why not associate it with other long distance sports at the same event? In answering this intriguing question a project was launched. In fact the idea is already commonplace elsewhere. There is a form of endurance that merges with athletics, called Ride and Tie (https://www. rideandtie.org/) in the US, and is practically unknown in Brazil, perhaps even because riding in many places does not seem like a practice athletic when in fact riding, especially the endurance, requires an extraordinary physical training. Conversations come and go and so came the realization of something more comprehensive than the Ride and Tie: the Equestrian Triathlon was designed! In the same event where swimming is replaced by riding, teams formed by riders, cyclists and runners compete for the best results. In this way, the equestrian event gains a more plural audience, interested also in the other two modalities. Win in public, also adds strength team and obviously win in competition.Â

amidst the verdant nature of the eucalyptus of this region that is central for competitors of Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Haras Endurance Minas Gerais enters the list of pioneers of this modality, betting on the formula effervescence / oxygen. Our expectation is great and our belief is that the equestrian endurance presents great potential, especially if it is associated with new audiences that will bring sponsors already consecrated in the other modalities of long distance and who are interested more and more for this great event that is the Equestrian Triathlon! The ride works in team, in the modalities cycling, running and riding. The goal is to aggregate the three sports, uniting the public long distance lover in nature in a single competition. The three modalities are performed separately, by different competitors.

The fusion of these three modalities generates two very important values in our view: effervescence and oxygen. I explain: teams are made up of 3 to 8 athletes: minimum of 1 athlete per modality up to maximum of 2 riders, up to 3 cyclists and up to 3 runners, all paying registration. The volume of inscriptions increases, generating higher revenues. This may be the missing oxygen. The glamour of an equestrian competition joins now the festive circus of runners and cyclists. This is effervescence.

The classification for each modality takes into account the individual final position in the competition and is worth as a score for the respective teams, which will be computed in the following way (the same criterion adopted in FORMULA ONE): the first place adds 25 points, the second place adds 18 points, the third 15, the fourth 12, the fifth 10, the sixth 8, the seventh 6, the eighth 4, the ninth 2, closing the scoring zone with the tenth place, which will add 1 point to his team. Win the team that adds the highest score. In the next edition results and photos of the second stage!

After some experiments, for the purpose of adjusting the basic regulation, Haras TRIO held the first official Triathlon Equestrian race at the end of 2017 in Confins, state of Minas Gerais, with the endurance having the seal of the Equestrian Federation of Minas Gerais. Recently, in Sete Lagoas, the 1st stage of the Equestrian Triathlon Championship of Minas Gerais took place in 2018 and for Saturday, August 4, Haras Endurance Minas Gerais will host the second stage. Khalifa Bin Hamad Al Attiyah’s Rodess du Loup wins Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabe des 4ans Rodess du Loup (Dahess) imposed himself easily in this Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes des 4ans. The Khalifa Bin Hamad Al Attiyah-owned horse cantered in second position, behind the leader. In the home straight, Rodess du Loup was asked to accelerate 300m from the final post and won by a length in front of Rijm (Azadi). Rijm finishes second after a good acceleration but without being able to fight against the winner. Hajres (Nizam) did not find his acceleration quick enough and took the third place, a neck behind Rijm. Charles Gourdain, the winning trainer, said: “We really like the horse, he has always been exceptional. I got him last year. He had run very well at the end of the year and it was a bit complicated after for his return: I made a mistake by putting the blinkers on him because he used to be cold. He had pulled a lot and got himself tired. Today without them, it was good. Christophe Soumillon also helped him. He will now certainly run the good race in Qatar, after maybe a race in England.” “I’ve expected this win”, said Mohanad Jassim Al Yaqoot, Al Jeryan Stud trainer, “I have great confidence in Rodess du Loup, although he didn’t win in his previous outing. It was my suggestion to change the jockey this time and it worked as Rodess du Loup managed to beat several other runners who are known for their good performance over this distance, such as Rajeh, who has excelled in several races overseas.” “It is a well-deserved win”, added Al Yaqoot, “and it demonstrates the dedication of Khalifa Bin Hamad Al Attiyah to improve his horse breeds and to excel in races run at Europe’s top racecourses.” Source: Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club / Photos: Juhaim

Brazilian jockey Jorge Ricardo broke down in tears as he claimed his 12,844th victory to equal the world record for a rider

Jorge Ricardo and Russel Baze Photo: Chronosfer The 56-year-old raised his fist aloft after drawing level with the mark set by retired Canadian Russell Baze. “I waited long for this and I finally got it,” he said after winning on Jubileia at Gavea in Rio de Janeiro. He has competed for 41 years, which is just less than 15,000 days, so is not far off winning a race a day on average. The jockey - nicknamed ‘Ricardinho’ - will now return to his base in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he is expected to break the record. Although based in Argentina, Ricardo came to his native Rio on Sunday, February 4, needing only three wins to equal Baze’s record. Riding seven races he won twice, and on Monday, February 5, evening he rode six more before hitting the magic number. Fans praise Ricardo’s professionalism, intelligence and guts. But another reason for his spectacular numbers is sheer time spent on the horse. He estimates having ridden 70,000 races and has never taken a long holiday. “I never had much time for vacations. I took a week, occasionally two,” he said. “My life has always been about horse racing.” 80

Arabian Horse Intl

Apart from Baze, no other jockey in the world has even reached 10,000 wins. The leading British rider is Sir Gordon Richards, who finished on 4,870 victories in 1954. “I never in my life imagined I’d win so many races,” Ricardo told AFP. “If you were going to think something up, you’d never imagine winning nearly 13,000.”

Ricardo in numbers: - Began racing when he was 15; - Estimates he has ridden in 70,000 races; - Won 26 jockeys’ titles in a row in Brazil; - Best seasonal total: 477 wins. Rivalry - Ricardo X Baze The duel between Ricardo and Baze was a long-running contest until the Canadian retired aged 57 in 2016. For about 15 years they shadowed each other, one reaching the 10,000 mark first, and then the other 11,000 and so on.

“I think we have something of a connection,” Ricardo said. “He must have known about the races I was winning here and I always checked out what he won there. There was a symbiosis.” They only met a few times, including in England at the Shergar Cup team event at Ascot in 2008. They also took part in a special 2014 head-tohead in Brazil, which Ricardo won.

It hasn’t entered my head to stop yet It became a battle against each other, but also against age and injuries. Asked what bones he has broken over his career, Ricardo needed to pause and think, before calling himself “half-bionic” and coming up with this list: collarbone, humerus, maxilla, shoulder blade, elbow, finger, rib. “It’s a very risky profession,” he said. “You fight with your body and sometimes you’re lucky, sometimes not.”

She rarely watches his races live, because “I get quite nervous,” and longs for him to retire. The diminutive, tough-as-granite jockey seems not to notice the advice. “Every time he wins he seems to be even more excited. He gets even worse,” she told AFP. “I don’t think he’ll stop, no.” Maybe reaching the record might seem like an ideal moment to hang up the spurs, but there’s no sign that Ricardo agrees. Asked moments after Monday’s big win if he would now take it easy, Ricardo stopped crying. He grinned. “It hasn’t entered my head to stop yet,” he said. Source: www.bbc.com Jorge Ricardo (Rio de Janeiro, September30, 1961)

As well as the sheer battering, Ricardo has been sick with lymphoma, and even he admits that 56 “is not a normal age for a jockey.”

He is the son of Antônio Ricardo, of Urussanga (Santa Catarina), jockey who won the most victories in racetracks South American in a season to his time, passing after to act like trainer.

Ricardo’s wife Renata Teixeira, 42, said he was a loving but often “absent” father and that their children “although feeling proud, miss him.”

At 16 Jorge Ricardo began to ride as a jockey apprentice at the Hippodrome Gavea, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. On November 16, 1976 he got

his first victory riding the horse Taim, trained by his father, who also taught him a lot of the art of driving. In 1977 he passed the jockey category. It started up so a successful career with over 9,000 wins, 26 titles of statistic as a jockey at the Hippodrome Gavea, and numerous victories in group races like the Grand Prix Brazil, Grand Prix São Paulo and the Grand Prix Bento Gonçalves. In June of 2006 he moves to Argentina, aiming to beat the world record of victories. He became the idol and leader of the statistics of the two main racetracks of Argentina (Palermo Hippodrome Argentino and Hippodrome of San Isidro. In the season 1992/1993 (from 01/07/1992 to 06/30/1993) sets the Brazilian record of 477 victories in a year. In the 2008 season he again beat, for the second consecutive year, the Argentine record of races won in a year. With 467 victories Jorge Ricardo won International Classics (Group I) in all Latin American countries in which he competed. He won more than 160 Group I classics, having even won five times the most important event of the South American turf, the “Latin American International Grand Prix” (Group I), while his immediate opponents only did so in two occasions. The best horse he rode was Much Better, a true champion.

#UnidosPorElTurf Argentina

The equestrian family joined once again, but this time it was in self-defense. Under the hashtag #unidosporelturf, the equestrian is promoting a series of measures and actions that have to do with the repeal of the law that regulates the Repair Fund and that sustain the activity. In February, the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Maria Eugenia Vidal, made public her decision to reduce to the equestrian activity Buenosairean the corresponding income to the Originating Background Game. The aforementioned income is covered by the Law of the Turf (Law No. 13.253), based on the destination of between 9 and 15% of the taxes of bingo halls and casinos located in the territory of the province of Buenos Aires at official racecourses of the same. 84

Arabian Horse Intl

This Fund was created to protect the activity and is the fundamental support of the Horse Industry. The Turf Argentino is an industry of 150 years of tradition. Argentina is the fourth world producer of racehorses. The controversial measure of shortening the then current 12% income to the minimum possible from the same month of February was not the only one, In addition Vidal communicates that a Bill is presented with the objective of gradually annulling such perception until it reaches 0% in December of the year 2019. The racecourses are forced to reduce costs, reducing the prizes of the races and in some cases programming fewer weekly competitions, which mean that in addition to making a daily effort for lower remuneration, the opportunities to generate income are diminished. In Argentina turf is

an activity that employs more than 82,000 people and supports 320,000 families. That is why during the midday of Thursday June 8: pawns, serene, foremen, gallopers, apprentice jockeys, jockeys, trainers, veterinarians, blacksmiths, fodder, owners, breeders, maintenance personnel, specialized media and all families linked to our activity they accompanied 400 race horses located in the main straight of the turf track of the training center, carrying out a pacific claim, without political flags or cuts in the public roads. For the first time at the Hippodrome of San Isidro there was a convocation of such magnitude, the idea promoted by Victoria Duggan and the Haras El ParaĂso, the Veterinary Service of San Isidro, the Racing Commission of the Jockey Club, the Jockeys Apprentice school, the press team of the hippodrome and Gustavo Abalo responsible for the Turf section of the Diario Popular, gathered a thousand people, all of them reunited with the sole objective of defending our source of work.

The mayor of the municipality of San Isidro and close to the races, Gustavo Posse, was present at the training center giving his support to the second industry that generates more employment in Buenos Aires, only behind the automotive. It was hard for me to imagine a more shocking situation than admiring 400 horses walking in rounds along the main straight. Although the sensation that crossed my body when I heard the Argentine national anthem played by a chorus composed of the widest diversity of classes that can coexist in an activity, I can only compare it with the mixture of feelings I felt at a racetrack when I had only 4 years. Dad’s horse had the head start on the disc, a year after his last performance. Each of those present have contributed our grain of sand, the first step we have all taken together, it only remains to make ourselves known and to be heard. In the General Assembly of IFHRA, Ms. Lara Sawaya, Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA), Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, General Manager of Wathba Stallions and Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR), in her opening address, urged member countries to identify more apprentice jockeys so as to enable them to participate in the Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship race series. 88

Regarding the Mentorship programme, where Arabian Horse Intl

youngsters get to travel to other countries on a scholarship under RSF, Ms Sawaya stated that ten students have been finalized for the year 2018 and the first student had already begun his programme. Ms Sawaya sought more coordination among member countries to make the races more successful. She also added that one more race will be held exclusively for South American region. She underlined that each rider should have completed five wins to be able to participate in the Festival races. In the Press Conference, the Festival confirmed its support to Madrid which will host the FEI World Endurance Championship for Young Horses in 2020. HE Dr Hessa Al Oteiba, the UAE Ambassador to Spain, hailed the contributions of the late Sheikh Zayed in building the UAE into a modern country and also his support for heritage events like equestrianism. “HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Her Highness Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s

Union, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and Head of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood are continuing the great work done by the late Sheikh Zayed and this Forum here in Madrid has been so widely received by Spain and other countries,” she said.

Archives, UAE, Faisal Rahmani, Chairman, IFAHR, Mubarak Al Nuaimi, Director of Overseas Promotion, DCT, Abu Dhabi and Edward Hamod, General Manager of National Feed and Flour Production & Marketing Co LLC, also made opening remarks which was followed by a captivating presentation by Dr Abdulla Alraisi on ‘Zayed: A Man Who Built A Nation’.

The three-day World Arabian Horse Racing Forum began on May 2 and experts from various aspects of Purebred Arabian racing were in attendance. Seven sessions of the WAHRF discussed seven different topics over three days while the third and final day (May 4) brought the curtain down on the Forum. There was a strong call for standardization of rules and regulations governing the sport of Purebred Arabian racing on the opening day of 9th edition of the World Arabian Horse Racing Forum. Organized by the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, the Forum, with over 400 delegates representing over 80 countries in attendance, was inaugurated by HE Dr Hessa Al Oteiba, the UAE Ambassador to Spain. Dr Abdulla Alraisi, Director General of National

The international gathering got a glimpse of the achievements of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan as the UAE marked the 100thbirth anniversary of the founder of the UAE with 2018 being observed as ‘Year of Zayed’. The video presentation brought alive some of his profound statements while shots of the great leader supervising the development and transformation of a desert country into a modern nation had all those present in awe of the Late Zayed. The opening session on Breeding was moderated by renowned racing commentator Derek Thompson and on the panel were Khalid Al Naboodah (UAE), Ahmed Al Balushi (Oman), Emanuel Cesac (FRA), Mohammed Quramil (Morocco), Garett Ford (USA), Val Bunting (FRA), Lynn Bennett (USA), Richard Lancaster (UK) and Dr. Andrew Dalglish. Breeding Session

All panel members were unanimous that the main factors that go into the breeding of a successful race horse were selection of the right mare and the right stallion, pedigree, conformation and good stable staff who understand the young foal and help raise it in the right environment.

added that the role of HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival had triggered a huge boost in Arabian racing in their respective countries. Dutch trainer Karin van den Bos said she pursued a holistic approach to training her horses and had achieved a lot of success.

When the topic of Embryo Transfer was brought up, Val Bunting and Richard Lancaster felt this method of breeding would lead to abuse and were not in favour and also added that they were against the rules. However, since the IFAHR rules governing such aspects gave individual freedom to countries to follow what suited them best, some of the other panelists sought a standardization of this rule. It was also suggested that they limit the number of embryo transfers to the minimum to help safeguard the gene pool.

There was a lot of discussion on whether Arabian horses should start racing at 3 or 4 years and finally there was some consensus that the trainer should take this decision based on the condition of his horse.

Pat Buckley was the head of the second session Racing & Training with Mark Powell (USA), Nelly Philippot (Belguim), Xavier Ziani (FRA), Ezzeldine Sedrati (Morocco), Damien De Watrigant (FRA), Thomasz Chalimoniuk (Pol), Karin van den Bos (Ned), Roberto Cocheteaux (Spain) and Francis Mautoban (FR) on the panel. Sedrati said Morocco staged 700 races every year and they were short of horses while Chalimoniuk said Poland staged around 220 races and both 90 Arabian Horse Intl

Later in the third session of the day on Rules & Regulations, Nutrition & Veterinary Service, the call for standardization of rules gathered support. This session was moderated by UK’s Philip Brenan with the panelists being Hecham El Debagh (Morocco), Dr Stefano Daneri (Italy), Mohammed Al Hashemi (Oman), Marcel de Bruyne (Belgium), Jirayr Habibian (Armenia), Neil Abrahams (Canada) and Ian Patterson (Cyprus). Jirayr Habibian said the regulations are always evolving in sport and hence the legal framework should keep pace with the rapid changes in horse racing. “Legal system and regulations should go hand in hand.” Neil Abrahams said though there is no standard-
