LETTERS

TO THE WORLD

Gary Kenworthy, Dalton, Georgia: I would like to offer some comments regarding the recently completed U.S. Nationals. My wife Wanda and I arrived in time to watch most of the open halter classes and I must say the quality was outstanding. The futurity filly class may be the deepest I have ever had the pleasure of watching. One right after the other, the quality just kept on coming. It was amazing! If anyone ever was to infer that being U.S. National Top Ten isn’t all that impressive, they clearly were not in attendance in 2009. Anyone should be extremely proud to have any of the top fifteen in their barn. The colt futurity was almost as good, and it had another extra-special element. The young handler, Claudinei Machado, the in-house trainer for Shirley and Murray Popplewell, absolutely put on a clinic with Bey Ambition. They were amazing together. What a rapport they had between them. It was a joy to watch, and the performance certainly got the crowd into it. Congratulations, Rae-Dawn Arabians. I’d also like to congratulate the judges. I didn’t always agree with their scoring, and clearly there was seldom a consensus among them, but they made it entertaining and usually, from where I was sitting, the best horses were properly rewarded. I’d like to offer a few suggestions that I think may be worthy of consideration. To me, the overall “showâ€? aspect of the halter classes is enhanced when all the horses are allowed to make a grand entrance into the ring together, like they do in Paris and Las Vegas. It gets the crowd engaged and that’s a good thing. For the championship classes, nothing should be spared to enhance the mood. Smoke, lights, music ‌ all the pomp and circumstance that these classes deserve! Once they’re all in, then they should all be excused and the horses judged individually. I also think we can speed things up a bit by making the scoring system more simplified. I think we need to keep in mind that we are part of a global breed/industry. There’s really no need to reinvent the wheel. In fact, in this case, I think there is much to be gained by conforming to the European system and using it in a similar manner. We have to keep in mind that our continued existence (breeders, trainers, judges, and AHA as well) is dependent upon the

“Personally, I think throwing out the high and low is completely unnecessary given the transparency of announcing the scores immediately after the horse has left the ring.” sale of horses, many of which need to come from other parts of the world. To develop our own system is arrogant and tantamount to thumbing our noses at the rest of the world. I think this is terribly shortsighted. We can’t exist by simply selling horses to each other here in the U.S. We NEED the rest of the world. In my opinion, we also need to use the system the way it is used elsewhere around the world. When people talk about using the “entire range of numbers in a 20-point system with 10 being average” it makes me think that perhaps they haven’t thought it through. How a horse is scored at our National show is important in the marketplace. If the classes I witnessed in Tulsa were held in Paris, we would have seen many 20s, yet few were given. I saw horses that would have scored 20s across the board for movement in Europe but in Tulsa they were lucky to get an occasional 19. We need to be more generous with our scoring. Don’t find ways to denigrate our own horses, find ways to reward the great ones! It matters in the marketplace. I’m not suggesting we unjustly award points but I am suggesting that we keep in mind the proper context. Most of the horses I saw in the futurity classes would have been VERY competitive anywhere in the world, yet the scores that were awarded suggest something quite different. There are two other adjustments we should consider. First, if we feel we must throw out the high and the low, then let’s throw out the high and the low in the respective categories, not individual judges’ total scores. Personally, I think throwing out the high and low is completely unnecessary given the transparency of announcing the scores immediately after the horse has left the ring. Unjust or unqualified judges will be easily identified and their usage will diminish. If you’re going to hire five judges, use them. Perhaps another option is to hire six and let one, selected by a random drawing, sit out every class. It’s easier on the judges and it provides a greater diversity of opinion. Then, in championship classes, use all six! The second “adjustment” would be to announce the scores awarded in each category by each judge, as we do now, but don’t do the arithmetic … don’t announce the totals! Few will do the math while watching the classes and, especially when the outcome is uncertain, the suspense will build. When no one knows for sure who the winner is it’s much more exciting! And, exciting is good! Lucy Estabrook, Parker, Texas: Belated thanks for being an American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) sponsor. Many riders use the appropriate breed, Arabians, but don’t have true Arabitis. I remind all riders of your sponsorship, and suggest they subscribe, to learn more about our beautiful (inside and out) breed. I have Arabian Horse World’s going back to 1967, when I was a wee girl and read about Tevis and started dreaming of riding all day and all night. My two endurance horses, Smokin Walor SWA (PB Walor x Serenada SA) aka “Valor” and SS Pathfinder (KA Czubuthan x Latest Discovery) aka “Flyer,” both entered my life with similar phone calls: “Come get this horse.” To both calls, I responded, “I don’t want another horse. I don’t need another 7 6 ARABIAN HORSE WORLD 6 JANUARY 2010

horse. I can’t afford another horse. I don’t have time to ride another horse. I don’t like geldings. He’s too homely. He doesn’t have a fashionable show pedigree.” Resistance was futile. Flyer came home with me five years ago, and Valor three years ago. Valor and I bonded right away, but it took over a year of forcing myself to ride Flyer before he wormed his way into my heart. He’s a very busy boy, and it took time for him to realize, yes, he can focus, learn, and even stand still. Both horses spent a year doing long, slow, conditioning rides before entering their first 50-mile competition. The goal has always been to enjoy the day, sharing the sights, enjoying the view through the ears of a happy horse. The goal has never been winning. Along the way, they’ve both finished at least one 100-mile ride, won top tens, high Vet Scores, Best Condition, and have almost 1,000 lifetime miles, each. Would you agree, Flyer and Valor are the best mistakes I ever made? Both horses finished their 2009 AHA National Championship rides: Valor in the top ten on the 100, and Flyer a minute or two behind the 50-mile top ten, in 14th place. No gorgeous plaques (not all 100-milers entered the AHA portion of the ride, so only seven plaques were awarded), but two happy, healthy, “fit to continue” horses, two very fun rides, and many loads of laundry, horse and human. Thank you again for your sponsorship, and Happy Trails.

AHA Convention Wrap-up

by Lori Conway Have you ever attended an AHA Convention? If not, I hope this report will enlighten you and encourage you to participate and attend one in the future. It offers something for everyone, regardless of your level of involvement in the breed. The week always begins and ends with the Board of Directors meeting, which is open for anyone to attend, and this is an excellent opportunity to see the inner workings within AHA. The rest of the week is devoted to committee meetings where Champion Junior Colt Abha Qatar. relevant issues are discussed and the general session where the reports are given and the resolutions are voted on. The educational seminars are another bonus and the Arabian type presentation by Scott Benjamin and the genetic diseases presentation were great. Do you belong to a committee? If you go to the Web site, it is easy to sign up and find a committee that interests you, be it equine stress, working western, equitation, youth, amateur, professional horsemen, sport horse, USEF Arabian rules, racing, National show commissions, distance riding, or if you are into more of the business end of things, budget and finance or internal audit. Our breed is full of talented individuals that have a variety of skills to offer, and volunteering to work on a committee is a great way to contribute. We are all AHA and we all need to help our organization improve. The focus of much of this convention dealt with financial issues. What money Champion Junior Filly Najdah Al Zobair. we have, where it is, budgets for the future, and missed or hit budgets of the past. 266 6 ARABIAN HORSE WORLD 6 JANUARY 2010

I realize that AHA has its financial woes like so many other organizations, and it has had some major problems, but at the end of the convention, there was a greater sense of security and stability about the direction in which AHA is heading. I credit the executive committee for taking a hard look at what is working and what is not, focusing on getting accurate numbers, and putting some new key people in position to get the job done. I would encourage everyone to go to the AHA Web site at http://www.arabianhorses.org/membership/ convention/2009/, where you can see the speeches that Lance Walters and Glen Petty gave, as well as summaries of the shows and other significant AHA events. The election of Stan Morey as our new commissioner added another level of stability, which we have been lacking for far too long. Approximately 340 out of a possible 525 eligible delegates attended the convention and an additional 100 people were there just as spectators. Most of those attending were professional horsemen, amateurs, breeders, or show management. The resolutions to be voted on are always the hot topic, but this year there were really only a couple that had a lot of discussion. They were: 18-09, to award a full Top Ten at all National shows, which passed; and 15-09, the North American Halter procedure, which failed. As the proponent and supporter of the Arabian scoring system, I made a pledge to form a committee that will bring forward changes to address some of the concerns regarding halter class procedures. The resolutions regarding Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS) and Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) and the disclosure of known carriers passed easily, as did the addition of the new select rider definition. It is my understanding that the U.S. Nationals will include the select rider classes in 2010. The opportunity for select riders to compete within their own peer group should increase participation in all adult amateur divisions as well. In closing, I would again urge everyone to get involved. We have the best equine, the Arabian horse, and together we can make a difference. I appreciate the opportunity to serve AHA as chair of the Equine Stress Research and Education committee, president of the Minnesota Arabian Horse Association and the APAHA Vice President. The following were Resolutions approved at the 2009 Convention: 2-09 — AHA Handbook Consolidation/Clarification. AHA staff shall be authorized to combine or omit redundant or obsolete portions of the AHA Handbook, so long as the intent of the rules, procedures, or pertinent information remains. 3-09 — Add Disclosure of Cerebellar Abiotrophy to the AHA Code of Ethics 5-09 — USEF Show Penalty. USEF Arabian Division must prepare motion to modify rules to remove penalty placed on shows for attendance and/or entry of suspended USEF members and will submit approved motion to USEF for approval. 6-09 — Exception for Shows Regarding CPR Certified Personnel. Competitions using more than three performance

areas simultaneously, and all first year A or AA rated competitions, must have at least one additional person who is CPR certified to assist the medical personnel of record for that competition. 8-09 — Tying Stirrups to Equipment. Horses must be shown without artificial appliances. (Anything that alters the intended use of equipment as provided for in the description of appointments for a given class is considered to be an artificial appliance.) 18-09 — Full Top Ten at National Shows and Rides Regardless of Entries. All AHA National Championship shows will award Top Ten ribbons in every class and ride, no matter how many entries are in the class (and if ten or fewer, all exhibitors will be awarded a Top Ten ribbon). The following resolutions were approved with modification: 1-09 — Bylaw Change Regarding Board of Director Voting. The Board of Directors may take action, without a meeting, by mail, E-mail, fax, or similar communication within certain guidelines. 4-09 — Add Disclosure of Lavender Foal Syndrome (LFS) to the AHA Code of Ethics 9-09 — Sport Horse In-hand Scoring Procedures. When multiple judges officiate the same class, competition management may assign separate or shared triangles. In either case, judges will have separate score sheets and scribes. 12-09 — Saddle Seat Equitation Changes. For Championship classes, judges must declare their intent to utilize required tests in the 13 and Under and 14-17 Saddle Seat Equitation divisions 24 hours prior to the session in which the final class is held, and requires all contestants to perform two or more individual USEF tests. And for the 14-17 division, the wording of the resolution is changed to read, “Test 16 may be called for at the National level.” 13-09 — Arabian, Half-Arabian, and Anglo-Arabian Park Horse Class Specifications. The opening sentence of USEF AR 117 shall be amended to read: “The horse is to give a brilliant performance, with style, presence, finish, balance and cadence; with proper cadence and balance being paramount.” 14-09 — Clarification for Select Rider Classes. Riders in the Arabian, Half-Arabian, or Anglo-Arabian Divisions of select AOTR, AAOTR, ATR, AATR, JOTR, and JTR classes shall not be considered separately when competing in the same performance section. Said eligibility remains throughout the current competition year. 17-09 — Equitation/Showmanship Committee. To qualify for National Championship classes, equitation riders must win a medal in a class of three or more entries, a total of five qualification points in AHA Medal classes, or a Top Five or better in Regional/East Coast/Pacific Slope Championship shows; and all equitation medal classes will award points to riders using the current AHA qualifying point system. The following resolutions were not approved: 15-09 — to make Arabian scoring optional and allow the use of the North American Halter procedure. 19-09 — MOS tabulation for final results in halter classes.
