Watching one of his horses at a recent show, the gentleman beamed. “I have goose bumps … he is so beautiful. I couldn’t see another horse in the ring, only him.” After 30 years of breeding Arabian horses, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani still finds such pleasure in watching his horses, whether they be competing on the world’s great racetracks, showrings, or endurance trails, or if he is simply strolling the barn aisle of an evening. “He built his house on the farm outside Doha so that he could be near his horses,” says Al Shahania director Abdulrahman Al Mansour. “Since he was a young boy, he was drawn to his father’s stable. There, he enjoyed being with the local-bred Arabians and developed a passion for long distance riding.”

Over the decades Sheikh Mohammed has assembled a herd of race-bred broodmares widely considered to be the finest collection in the world. Al Shahania has also acquired embryos from great-producing mares such as HB Bessolea (Besson Carol x Credit To Society), dam of World Champion Baanderos; RGA Kouress (Kouvay Bey x Angophora), dam of international champion Marajj (by Marwan Al Shaqab); Paloma de Jamaal (Soho Carol x Palomara), dam of Stival (by Gazal Al Shaqab); and NW Siena Psyche (Padrons Psyche x NV Shanteuse), dam of four U.S. National Champions. In 2013, Al Shahania is poised to become even more active in the world’s showrings. Last year, under the warm February sun at Scottsdale, an elegant bay filly caught Sheikh Mohammed’s eye, and soon after, Miss Marwan PA (Marwan Al Shaqab x Miss Amerika) joined the Al Shahania show string. Reserve Junior Filly Championship, she won Region 9 Champion Filly and then U.S. National Champion Yearling Filly and Reserve Junior Champion Filly. “We’ll show her as a two-year-old, beginning with Scottsdale 2013, and then let her have a break and make some contributions to the Al Shahania breeding program,” says her trainer Michael Byatt. “She’s a beautiful filly out of a wonderful Versace daughter. I think she’ll be an important ingredient in the Al Shahania program.”

Also competing in the two-year-old filly division this year for Al Shahania is Badiaa Al Shahania (Marwan Al Shaqab x Majalis), who is entered in the Breeders International Classic at Scottsdale. “She looks amazing,” says her trainer Michael Byatt, who looks forward to handling her at major shows throughout 2013.

Returning to the Scottsdale arena this year is the 2011 Scottsdale Champion Breeders International Classic Senior Mare and U.S. National Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, Abha Raipur (El Perfecto x Abha Zenobia). “I think she has a chance of being a superstar this year — she looks amazing,” says Michael Byatt. “She had an incredible Marwan filly in June, and now Raipur is fresh and happy and ready to roll.” Representing Al Shahania in the U.S. this year, beginning with the Scottsdale show, is Marwan Cristal RCA (*Marwan Al Shaqab x Crysstell), 2012 U.S. National Champion Six- to Seven-YearOld Mare and Brazilian National Champion Mare. “She is one of Marwan’s most look-alike and most accomplished daughters,” says her trainer Greg Gallún. “Tall and refined, she possesses her sire’s neck and shoulder. Cristal is poised and ready to make a strong campaign through 2013 U.S. Nationals.” Greg will also be handling the two-year-old filly Gharam Al Shahania (Pershahn El Jamaal x Om El Jinaah) in the Scottsdale International Breeders Classic. “The Scottsdale show will be her showring debut,” says Greg. “She is a very typey filly with an exceptional head and wonderful charisma.” The three-year-old colt Om El Sanadeed (Om El Shahmaan x Om El Jinaah) will return to Scottsdale competition this year in the International classes. He was 2011 Scottsdale Champion Breeders International Classic Junior Colt, Scottsdale Champion Signature Auction Yearling Colt, AOTH, and Vegas World Cup Champion AHBA Futurity Yearling Colt ATH. With the 2010 colt Barzan Al Shahania (Stival x NW Siena Psyche), Sheikh Mohammed dipped his toe into European competition in 2012, winning Gold Junior Colt at the Vichy International show
in France, Top Five Two-Year-Old Colts at the All Nations Cup in Aachen, and Top Ten Junior Colts at the World Championships in Paris. In the U.S., Barzan amassed an impressive résumé: 2011 U.S. National Champion Yearling Colt, U.S. National Champion Junior Colt, 2011 Scottsdale Champion Classic Junior Colts, and 2011 and 2012 Vegas World Cup Gold Supreme Champion Junior Stallion. Barzan will be breeding his first book of outside mares this year, and hopes are that the flaxen-maned chestnut will pass on his dazzling good looks and commanding presence.

“Coming from a background of mainly Thoroughbred racehorses, Al Shahania Stud has introduced me to a totally new world: the Arabian show world,” says manager Alexandra Newman. “I remember going to see my first Arabian horse show a few years ago in Qatar. One horse that came into the arena that day made such an impression. He was, for me, the perfect Arabian horse — the one that you dream of: beauty, elegance, presence. His name was Marwan Al Shaqab. “Over the last year, the Arabian show world has really grown on me. I now make as much noise for our horses as those ‘mad’ people I saw the first time! What I also love about them is their character. I have fallen in love with

He is truly the golden one for me!” With his growing interest in competing in European showrings, Sheikh Mohammed has selected a pair of lovely grey mares to represent him there this year, both from the Argentine pastures of Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen. Exquisite in her reflection of Old World type is the 2004 mare ZT Faa’kalba (ZT Faa’iq x ZT Shakalba). Plans are for her to go to the World Cup in Vegas in April and then to Europe. Joining her will be the 2008 mare ZT Magnajamara (ZT Magnanimus x ZT Shakjamara), whose dam was twice Egyptian Event
Supreme Champion Mare. Both mares will be shown by Michael Byatt. For Sheikh Mohammed, 30 years with Arabian horses have given him what he calls “the highest highs.” Still, one may wonder how a breeder with a foot in both words — performance and beauty — can reach the pinnacle of both. But of course, if anyone can, it would be Sheikh Mohammed. He not only possesses an appreciation for all the facets of the Arabian breed, but he also has a solid working knowledge of structure and function, honed during his many years of endurance competition and as a highly engaged owner of racehorses. His eye for beauty — in all things — doesn’t hurt either. And then, as Abdulrahman says, there is simply this: “He is in love with horses.”

Sheikh Mohammed could hardly have dreamed of a better two years for his Arabian racing string than 2011 and 2012. The climax came under crisp autumn skies at Longchamp in Paris in October 2012, when the gutsy 2008 filly Mkeefa (Amer x Nisaee by Dormane) beat the boys in the richest race for Arabian horses — the $900,000 Qatar World Cup. The second-place horse was also wearing Al Shahania colors, the 2008 colt Rathowan (Amer x Arc de Ciel by Djendel). “Since Mkeefa was broken as a two-year-old I have been blessed with the opportunity of seeing her develop into one of the world’s best,” says Al Shanania race trainer Julian Smart. “She has always been very forward and the improvement from three to four years has been nothing short of remarkable. She won the Guineas and Derby in Qatar at three and then progressed over the summer to win the U.K. Arabian Derby, the Hatta stakes and of course the Qatar Arabian World Cup. Her targets for 2013 will be a few races in Qatar including a possible shot at the Emir’s Sword followed by another tilt at some of the big races again in Europe, all being well.” The two wins in England, combined with the Longchamp victory, make Mkeefa the top Arabian racehorse four and over in the world this year. “It’s what every trainer dreams of,” said Julian Smart. Finishing farther back in the field in the Qatar World Cup was the farm’s great racehorse Jaafer (Amer x Madjela by Manganate), and Sheikh Mohammed admits to having been a little torn about the outcome. “I was thrilled with the big win Mkeefa gave us that day, and I feel she will be an asset to our breeding program when she retires from the racetrack. That said, had Jaafer won, he would have been the first Arabian racehorse to have won the three richest races for Arabian horses, as he had already won the Dubai World Cup 2010 Kahayla Classic and Qatar’s 2011 Emir’s Sword. “But now is the time for Jaafer to establish himself as a breeding stallion. He has the racing success and the pedigree to make him a world-class stallion being by Amer and out of Madjela, a full sister to Dormane, Djendel, and Mebrouk. He was given several test mares in 2010 and settled all of them. The resulting foals look the part and are developing nicely.” Adds trainer Julian Smart, “If Jaafer passes on half of his ability to his offspring, he will have a great career as a stallion. He is one of the best horses I have ever come across. To race as long as he did and at the level he did for so long is a great tribute to him. He will be missed by myself and my team, that is for sure.”

As if the day wasn’t great enough, Al Shanahia horses won the World Cup for the second year in a row — in 2011, the farm’s filly, Areej (Amer x Akie Croux Noire by Tidjani), won it and her stablemates finished second and third. It is almost unheard-of to win such prominent races back-to-back, let alone to have done it with homebred fillies. On the same October 2012 weekend in Paris, three-year-olds raced at Saint-Cloud, where the Al Shahania filly Djainka des Forges (Kerbella x Djamour des Forges) won the Group 1 $130,000 Qatar Arabian Trophy for fillies, the first stakes win of her career. Watch for her in the four-year-old fillies race at Longchamp in 2013. One of the most prestigious Arabian races in the Middle East is Qatar’s Emir’s Sword, and the Al Shahania Stud offices in Doha glitter with displays of the gold, jewel-encrusted trophy swords from this race. Another was added to the collection in 2012. This time Al Shahania horses swept the board winning first through fourth places with: Aziz (Amer x Aziza d’Aroco by Dormane); Asraa Min Albarq (Amer x Akie Croix Noire by Tidjadi); Jaafer (Amer x Madjela by Manganate); and Mu’Azzaz (Amer x Massamarie by Tidjani). “I could not have been more proud as all four finishers were Al Shahania-bred horses,” says Sheikh Mohammed. “Aziz is a very good horse and compensates for his handicap of only having one eye. We will campaign Aziz again to the Emir’s Sword and then to the big races in Europe aiming him for the Qatar Arabian World Cup.” Adds Julian, “To win the Emir’s Sword for two years in a row was simply sensational. To have the first four home in a race of that magnitude was absolutely amazing. And to win it with one of my favorites, Aziz, was very special. From day one, I have always thought that he was going to be something special, so to see him achieve something like that was great for him, as he has had to overcome the loss of his eye as well as many doubters! I hope, as he is still relatively young in Arabian racing terms, that he will continue for some time at the top level. He is an absolute pleasure to train as are most of the horses here at Al Shahania Stud. I am honored to be involved with the superb breeding program that Sheikh Mohammed has had in place now for some years, and I am fortunate enough to be the one at the moment to guide the horses in the right direction.” In 2012, a Thoroughbred carried the farm’s colors in the U.S. for the first time. The French-bred filly Flotilla (Mizzen Mast x Louvain) had an explosive late run down the center of the track to win the $909,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on November 2 at Santa Anita Park. watching the race from half a world away, said, “I could not believe it. I was up in the clouds.” Look for the Thoroughbred side of the operation to grow now. “Another challenge I look forward to,” he adds. “Even though it is still at a primary stage, Al Shahania’s Thoroughbred division has proven very successful in 2012,” says Alexandra Newman. “The first horse I was involved in acquiring for Al Shahania Stud was Hermival, who went on to be third in the Guineas in England and second in the Saint James’s Palace stakes in Ascot. Then came What A Name, who came close to being the first filly in over 20 years to win the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in Longchamp the day of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, being beaten narrowly for first place. However, the most prestigious of all is of course Flotilla, who won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. “It is an exciting time for Al Shahania Stud. I am grateful and excited to be part of the team and hoping to help Al Shahania Stud continue and grow in its successes in the future — be they in the show or racing world.” One wonders if in light of the great races being offered to Arabians at Churchill Downs and at Pimlico on Preakness day, if we might see an Al Shahania string racing in the U.S. in the future. “I would consider it,” says Sheikh Mohammed. “The biggest roadblocks are the quarantine requirements and the overlapping schedule of the races between Europe and the United States. We need more owners and horses in every country to make Arabian racing successful on a global stage.” A few days after the Paris races, the Arabian racehorses were back in Qatar where they will spend the winter. Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed maps out his strategy for the coming season. “Djainka des Forges and Al Anga are the two fillies that have developed quickly as three-year-olds. We have several colts out of top mares that should make it to the top level of competition — they are still just a bit immature right now and need time to develop.” The story of the last two racing seasons is really about the Al Shahania broodmares, Sheikh Mohammed believes. “This is where our success lies,” he says. “2012 was the year for Nisaee (Dormane x Naiada Al Maury) to shine as both Aziz, the winner of the 2012 Emir’s Sword in Qatar and Mkeefa, the winner of the 2012 Qatar Arabian World Cup in France were her produce. In 2011, it was the broodmares Madjela (Manganate x Madore), who produced Jaafer, and Akie Croix Noire (Tidjani x Okie du Cassou) who produced Areej. “To have had this kind of success illustrates the depth of the breeding program. For me, it’s even more meaningful than the trophies.”
