s we go into our third year of using the scorecard for judging halter horses, I am grateful that we have been able to maintain this important first step in evaluating breeding stock. With any new tool, it takes a while for it to be used to find out what works well and what may need tweaking. The good news is that the scorecard works! It causes judges to have to consider the whole horse as well as movement in their judging decision. A judge cannot simply focus on one outstanding trait and ignore the rest of the animal. Furthermore, there is the ability for the judge to publicly declare what the thought process was behind the placing of each horse. In the exit the ring strategy, there is less stress put on the horse, an enhanced opportunity at the long walk to see the horse as it really is, a great opportunity for the horse to show its natural movement and presence at the trot, and all judges see the same horse at the same time without any other distractions. This is all good. Good for judges, good for the horses, and good for the owners and breeders who value the opportunity to get feedback on the judge’s evaluation of their horse. What still needs work? First of all, we need to adjust the scoring for major faults. As the current system stands, any major fault cannot be scored higher than a 10 (out of 20 points). However, a 10 is considered “average� under the scorecard system. Therefore, a mixed (and incorrect) message is being sent: A horse with a major fault can (and is often) scored as average. Certainly a judge can go below 10 on a horse with a major fault, but in my experience, I rarely see it happen. I believe one of the reasons for this is that judges may be reluctant to score a 5 or a 6 on a horse out of fear of embarrassing the owner or of appearing too “harsh.� While it may be uncomfortable to assign a low score, a judge must have the courage to “call it as he/she continued on page 191

sees it.” I have had to assign some pretty low leg scores in the past few years — some at very large and prestigious shows, but if I were to try to spare the feelings of the owners I would not be doing my job and would be giving a false evaluation. Compromising on a major fault will only perpetuate it in the gene pool and no one will benefit. An elegant solution to this dilemma was found, in my opinion, at the Australian Nationals last year. For the first time, they decided to go to a scorecard. Alan Preston came up with a card that went from 10-20 points with half-point increments. Therefore, you have as many scoring choices as the current 1-20 system. However, the perception is much different. A horse with a major fault may be scored a 12 or 11. That is much easier to take than a 2 or a 1. Yet it places the score near the bottom of the scale, which is where

a major fault should be — not squarely in the middle. I believe that judges would be more comfortable scoring major faults more correctly, because the perception would be that it would not be as embarrassing. I also believe that owners and breeders would find it easier to accept a score of 12 rather than 2. Something to think about. Finally, the penalty box — judges need to use it! If horses are showing intimidation or fear, use it! There is no doubt that we have a problem in the Arabian breed as to how horses are presented in the showring. If we are going to have a kinder, gentler halter arena, judges are going to have apply penalty points in those situations where it is applicable. I would also continue to maintain that balding must become a penalty issue. The current balding rule is a farce and impossible to enforce. The

intent is genuine, but in application, it cannot work. Currently, we all look ridiculous. “Balded” horses are being shown without fear of dismissal due to the fact that faint stubble exists under the makeup, technically rendering the horse “not” balded. Therefore, it needs to be taken out as a rule and replaced as a penalty. Any judge who finds it offensive can simply penalize it. We are going in the right direction with the scorecard. It has given judges a voice, helped to insure the best “complete” horse wins the class, and has offered owners and breeders tangible feedback on their breeding stock. We have made a great start. Passages Harold Orr August 16, 1923-March 13, 2010
H
arold L. Orr passed away peacefully at his home in Ellensburg, Washington, on March 13. He was known for his brilliant mind and entrepreneurial sprit. A determined individualist, he lived life the way he wanted to. Harold Harold Orr, the driving force was born in Northern California, behind Orrion Farms, Ellensburg, where he remained until 1962. Washington. In 1946, he married the mother of his three children, Ronald, Sandra, and John. He was a staff sergeant in the army during World War II and began his career as a newspaper typesetter. He opened an H&R Block franchise in Seattle and as the tax business grew he ventured into other businesses such as commercial printing, jewelry manufacturing, boatbuilding, retailing, owning a radio station, and a software development company for the pharmaceutical industry. During his busy years in the Seattle area, Harold visited and fell in love with Ellensburg, where he bought property for his retirement. His dreams to have cattle and Arabian horses became a reality during the last 25 years. In 1975, he married his friend of 14 years, Dolly (Kroll) Orr. They shared their passion for animals, big and small. Harold will be known to Arabian horse enthusiasts as the driving force behind Orrion Farms, a prominent Arabian breeding and training facility in Washington state. Many of the horses he has owned and/or bred have been champions, including 2006 U.S. National Reserve Champion Junior Mare *Abha Myra (*Marwan Al Shaqab x ZT Ludjkalba by Ludjin El Jamaal); 2006 U.S. National Reserve Champion Breeders Sweepstakes Yearling Filly Marabella JMF (*Marwan Al Shaqab x Just MyStyle VF by Fame VF); and most recently 2010 Scottsdale Reserve Champion Senior Stallion OFW Magic Wan (*Marwan Al Shaqab x Magna Prelude by Magnum Psyche), whom he and Dolly also bred; all shown by Michael Byatt. Harold is survived by his wife, Dolly, his three children, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two nephews and their
families. Harold will be missed by his family and many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to any animal rescue organization of your choice.
Greener Pastures SC Zimpatique May 1993-February 2010
H
ennessey Arabians in Ocala, Florida, recently announced the passing of National Championproducing mare SC Zimpatique (Shah Azim x SC Eulipia by Gdansk). The 1993 grey mare was SC Zimpatique (Shah Azim x SC not only an excellent show Eulipia by Gdansk) horse and producer, but also a beloved presence at Hennessey and at her former home, Day Dream Arabians in Santa Ynez, California. Bred by Phillip and Marlene Hobson of Los Gatos, California, Zimpatique was 1994 Region 1 and 2 Top Ten Breeders Sweepstakes Yearling Filly before she was purchased by the Hennesseys in 2005. Zimpatique’s progeny include 2001 Canadian National Champion Western Pleasure AAOTR horse Showzim Up; 2007 Sport Horse National Top Ten Sport Horse Stallion Center Ring DDA; 2003 U.S. National Top Ten Breeders Sweepstakes Yearling Filly Kendall Marie DDA; and 2005 Sport Horse National Top Ten Sport Horse Under Saddle Shownanimous, all sired by Showkayce. Zimpatique had nine foals, the last a chestnut Eden C colt named H Zeden H, foaled in 2009. Recalls Hennessey Arabians trainer George Zbyszewski, “Zimpatique was a classic beauty. When I saw her for the first time at Day Dream Arabians, I thought, ‘she looks like a pure Polish daughter of *Eukaliptus, something that belongs at Michalow’s barns in Poland.’ And then she arrived in Ocala. She was stunningly beautiful — her neck and her large dark eyes will always remain in my memory.”
