aco, Texas, may not be the world’s most compelling destination, but Judy Sirbasku’s Arabians Ltd. has made the area the center of gravity for the global
Egyptian Arabian community, having supplied show winners and breeding stock to nearly every Arabian horse breeding country in the world. Just as significantly, perhaps no farm has done more to expose newcomers to the breed through their farm conferences, client seminars, mare-lease programs, and their newly introduced “part-of-a-horse” program. The good news is that after 33 years neither owner Judy Sirbasku nor general manager Shawn Crews shows any sign of slowing down. After yet another astonishingly successful Egyptian Event for Arabians Ltd. and their clients (where Judy received the coveted Pyramid Society’s Trustee Award), we sat down with Shawn and asked her to reflect on the farm’s decades of success, the challenges of marketing in a tough economic climate, and most of all the legendary mares, both those owned by Judy and those client-owned mares that comprise the Arabians Ltd. family broodmare band — about 95 mares in production annually, making theirs the largest Egyptian breeding program in

Among all the factors that have contributed to your decades of success, which one made the critical difference between your breeding program and those that did not endure as long? I believe the single most important factor in the decades of success that the Arabians Ltd. breeding program has enjoyed is the fact that for the most part Judy shares well. Many of the mares and mare lines that make this program notable are owned or owned and bred by our clients. An example that is still so vivid for me is years ago standing up a little black filly on that road in front of our stalls at the Egyptian Event as Chen Kedar of Ariela Arabians in Israel walked around her with a very serious expression on her face. It was almost as if Chen had a premonition of the greatness to come from that exotic, elegant filly. The filly had just placed sixth or seventh in her class so it was not as if five judges said, “this is the one.” And that filly’s family was not yet famous. But that moment in time felt important to all of us there. The filly was bred by the Guerin family, total newcomers to horses, and she would go on to be named The Vision HG (Thee Desperado x Belle Staar) and take her place in the history books as one of the most notable Egyptian broodmares of all time. 4 ▪ ARABIANS LTD ▪ WORLD

Selling horses to knowledgeable horse people is one thing, but it’s a huge responsibility to sell foundation stock to those who have no idea if the horse they are considering is quality. There is no greater joy for Judy than when, ten years after a total newcomer has purchased their first female from Arabians Ltd., they thank her for looking out for them in the beginning — that is a good feeling. Let’s face it: this is an expensive venture. There is not much room for mistakes, and those who start with the best have a very good chance of succeeding. The late Jim Sirbasku instilled the premise of dedication in his team. While we don’t have a crystal ball, we always make a genuine effort to help buyers so they can start at the top! Do you see new challenges in your business caused by the financial and political upheavals in the world today? Who are your buyers? Describe today’s market for Egyptian Arabians. What are buyers looking for?
There are financial challenges in every business and ours is certainly not exempt. But if you provide a quality product and ongoing service after the sale the business mostly looks after itself from a financial standpoint. We are a large breeding farm, so looking after things
like feed and hay cost, veterinary expenses, all those kinds of issues that truly matter to the bottom line, is crucial for our farm and our clients. We have a super talented and experienced staff. Each has their own area of expertise, and we count on each other in those areas. Each of our clients has an Arabians Ltd. staff member as their own “account executive” — so they “have people” as we say. Chris Bloodgood, Adam Schwaln and Tara Maus are among the most educated and enthusiastic young professionals in the business. They are available 24/7, and our clients appreciate the support this young team provides. As far as the market today for Egyptian horses, as my friend, the respected horseman and judge Greg Knowles, says to me, “Shawnee, you lived long enough to see that Egyptian horses are cool!” Straight Egyptian horses have always enjoyed a unique niche in the market. Over the last five years they have garnered increased attention in the overall global Arabian horse market. Breeders of non-Egyptian bloodlines are now utilizing these rare bloodlines. This renewed respect and value placed on Egyptian bloodlines has opened many new doors in the market — all very positive for straight Egyptian breeders. What sells? The rarest bloodlines — and the ones you want to keep — are what sell. Earlier this year, Nayla Hayek of Switzerland purchased a young broodmare from Judy. Bint Fariha Magidaa (Thee Desperado x Fariha Magidaa by *Shahir IASB) is one of the most stunning young Arabian mares in the world. She has never walked into a showring. Fariha comes from blood so rare that there are only a small handful left. Nayla has an incredible eye and has amassed one of the most impressive collections of Egyptian Arabian horses to be Thee Scarlet Rose RCA (*Mishaal HP x Thee Scarlet Lady), twotime futurity filly winner, owned by Linjawi Arabians and bred by Arabians Ltd.

found anywhere. The truly amazing thing is, it is a small group, not huge numbers, and each one is more rare and beautiful than the next. The last Egyptian mare to grace a cover of an Arabian Horse World issue representing Arabians Ltd. was Bint Bint Magidaa — so it’s quite fitting that Nayla’s precious Bint Fariha Magidaa was chosen for this cover, as Ms. Hayek’s program has more Bint Magidaa decendants than any other in Europe. Her eye for these horses is exceptional. In 2010 she acquired the foal Gameelah LDA (bred by our clients Dan and Louise De Russeau), so it was a great celebration for all of us when Gameelah was unanimous Junior Filly Champion the next year at the 2011 Egyptian Event with Frank Spönle on the lead. Though your stallions have international fame, your broodmares are very special, and much in demand. How many breeding-age mares does Arabians Ltd. have? Where did you acquire your foundation mares? What factors helped you make the selection of these mares? Do you still breed their lines? Have you added new tail female lineages over the years? Please explain in as much detail as you wish.
With the group of world-renowned Egyptian stallions amassed by Judy Sirbasku one would guess that they would be her pride and joy. In fact it is the mares that fuel Judy’s passion for what she does. Bint Magidaa, Aliashahm, and now Rhapsody In Black are really the loves of her “horse” life.

Judy has personally developed a computer program that keeps pedigree, strain, foaling date, show wins, color, ownership, breeder, import/export, and country for all of our horses and client horses — and a complete progeny list with all the same information. Judy input this information herself over the years. But the most valuable tool in my office is the notebook Judy made for me that has all that information categorized by family. The family is identified by the horse that contributes the core qualities that Judy wants to strengthen or replicate in future breeding. Most often these are key mares, but some are stallions. “Rare” is not valuable because it’s rare — only the special producers are given value in her program. If someone asks me about buying a particular horse, I can see if Judy has enough of that family to back it up. Judy’s goal is to keep several daughters of the best producing mares before selling any offspring. By studying the families, new breeders can learn from Judy’s experience. The first consideration in a breeding decision is conformation, but studying the past history of the mare and her entire family is integral to making that all-important breeding decision.

Judy has a core group of approximately 30 broodmares. Our clients and Affiliate farms are central to our breeding family. We share bloodlines and work together to preserve the Egyptian Arabian horse — altogether about 95 mares that are actively in production, each season — so we have an average of 46 fillies and 46 colts born each year. We are the largest Egyptian Arabian breeding program in North America, so it starts to put into perspective how small the worldwide population of straight Egyptians really is. Judy’s original mares come from programs from all around the globe. The Sirbaskus and longtime friends and mentors, David and Marion Gardner, imported several small groups in the early 1980s that are still a huge part of our collective success. Mares came from Germany and Babolna, including *Bahila, dam of The Minstril, and *Masira, who gave us Maali RCA by Ruminaja Ali. The tall, exotic offspring from that family are prolific producers of both great stallions and mares. Maali’s last filly by *Mishaal, Maali Masira RCA, is also with Ms. Hayek, and her last colt by the same stallion, Mishaali RCA, is in Qatar. Also, early in our program’s history, Judy and David purchased three pregnant mares with fillies by their sides from Peter and Jenny Pond of Australia; today they are influencing breeding programs

worldwide. U Liteupmy Life (Thee Desperado x *Wanisa), Princes Legacy (one of the last producing daughters of the TheEgyptianPrince) and Thee Scarlet Lady (Thee Desperado x Reckless Woman) are great examples of that cherished family that go back to Omayma (Sameh x Nazeera by Nazeer), the National Champion Mare of Australia. We are grateful that Osman Linjawi and his son Yousef have entrusted additional members of the Omayma family to us: Lola SIG (2011 Egyptian Event Reserve Supreme Champion Mare, bred by Stacey and Eric Mlak), Thee Scarlet Rose RCA (twice Event Futurity Champion), DSA Baby Dhall (bred by Jerel Kerby), and Mystify HG, all part of the Linjawi Arabian mare band now in residence at Arabians Ltd. And I must mention arguably the most influential Egyptian mare of all time: Bint Magidaa. She was Judy’s dearest friend, and Egyptian horses — or Arabians in general, for that matter — would not be where they are today without Bint Magidaa, the dam of Ruminaja Ali. Judy purchased the mare at 19 years of age, and even after Ruminaja Ali, Bint Magidaa produced millions of dollars’ worth of foals. Bint Magidaa’s last two daughters, Magidaas Image and champion producer Miss Maggie Mae remain in Judy’s loving care. Other foundation mares trace in tail female lines to Hanan, Deena, *Hayam, Imperial Mistilll, and Maar-Ree; additional rare stallion lines we cherish and strive to strengthen and preserve include *Ibn Hafiza, *El Mareekh, Ibn Galal, *Jamilll, and TheEgyptianPrince, to name a few. Just a lot of blending of bloodlines, then stir in Thee Desperado and his sons, and *Mishaal HP, and the result is a lot of great Egyptian horses. Frank Spönle helped us acquire Mishaal, and for that Judy and I are forever grateful. Judy is an amazing record keeper. I joke with her that she would have been that Bedouin in charge of reciting and keeping track of the families and matings. Her inventory notebook is kept by families. It is really quite interesting. She definitely has a vision and can give you info on foals she produced 25 years ago. Past records are hugely important to 9 ▪ ARABIANS LTD ▪ WORLD

present-day decisions. We do make mistakes, but try not to ever make them twice. Judy’s records are invaluable in all of our breeding decisions. All of this would be for naught without the dedicated young man who has managed our breeding division for over 13 years. Stephane Robillard has long been a key factor in the success of the program. Over the past three years Stephane has kicked up the level of that division another notch. substance to the extremely refined mares. We might also go to The Sequel RCA, Alixir, or our junior stallion, Infinity RCA. Temperament is key. I once gelded an expensive colt that I had picked out for Judy when it became obvious that he simply had a mean streak. Life is too short to have those kinds around, and for sure too short to have them in a breeding program.
What qualities of conformation and temperament must a mare

disappointed you as a producer?
The qualities of conformation and temperament in our broodmare band are as diverse as the mares themselves. Judy likes to breed opposites. As an example, most of the Omaymabred mares have extreme faces and compact bodies. Those are bred to the tall, stretchy, leggy stallions: Desperado, Thee Infidel, or Bellagio would be the go-to guys on those. The tall, leggy mares of the Ali family are typically bred to Mishaal. surprised you as a great producer?
Yes, no doubt. The kind of plain-Jane, full sister of several superstar champion mares
has jumped up to be the best producer! That happens a lot. I don’t know if it is that the expectation for a “Champion Mare” is so high that no horse in reality can meet it, or that we don’t expect as much from the not-so-fancy sister. Judy believes that the bloodline will always come through. One may be a little fancier than the next, but proven individuals in every line of the pedigree are so important. Just like in human families … a baby will usually look just like someone in the family. Possibly an uncle. Many times a grandparent. That is why it is so important that every horse in the pedigree be great. Unless you are a lucky person, if the pedigree is not strong the foal will look just like the worst horse in the family tree! The most important advice we give newcomers is to buy the absolute highestquality filly or mare you can, even if you have to wait to do so. We have clients in our breeding family that have a viable breeding business with only one mare. Describe the typical Desperado daughter. In what ways are the Desperado granddaughters sired by his sons, distinct?
I am prejudiced when it comes to Desperado. When he was born, Judy, Jim, and I were not experienced enough to ever consider that he may not turn out. We were just in love, and God has shined on that horse and all who have used him since then. The horse is just a genetic powerhouse. He has led a blessed life and so have all of us from all he has given us. His daughters are producing the core of so many breeding programs around the world, and I don’t think we have seen all of the best horses yet to come. We are so blessed that at 23 years of age he still has great semen. Those people who purchased lifetime breedings to Desperado when he was five weeks old have made their money back many times over. The strength of our breeding program lies in the Desperado daughters and granddaughters. They come in all styles,

looks, and colors, but one thing they all have in common is their ability to replicate quality time and time again. When did you know that the cross of *Mishaal HP on Desperado daughters and granddaughters was going to work? Who are some of the best examples of the cross? And to which stallions will you turn for those daughters?
I would like to say I was really smart in selecting Mishaal. The truth is I saw him with my eyes, but Judy is the one who had the guts to make that all-important decision. Frank Spönle knew the Desperado daughters well and had confidence in the big white horse, for us. In the end, the pedigree, once again, was what we bet on. daughters. Judy really has that instinct for what lines will blend together well, and she was right on the mark. Mishaal’s blood makes the whole program work. Thee Infidel, Pimlico RCA, Thee Asil, The Sequel RCA, Alixir, and Bellagio are all great stallions that we use for different traits — but all closely related. With Mishaal in the mix it all works beautifully. Your horses excel in the showring. Is show competition the main purpose of your breeding program? If so, why? If not, please describe your other purposes and goals.
The showring is the barometer used to measure a breeding program — it is not just whatever horse we like best. You have in many cases five knowledgeable judges confirming quality. So showing is part of the equation when it comes to value. With Egyptian horses I don’t believe individual horses have to win to prove their value, as value is still based on breeding potential, but the bloodline as a whole has to be competitive on a national and international level. Judy is first a breeder, but we do love to show. Not showing would be like have an amazing sports car that you love 12 ▪ ARABIANS LTD ▪ WORLD

and never taking it out on Saturday night. We do have a saying about shows though: They will give you your highest highs and lowest lows. You have to have pretty thick skin! We are fortunate that Greg Knowles and Frank Spönle show for us regularly. Together with our young handler Luis Paniagua, we have some of the world’s best handler talent. There are some Egyptian breeders who have reservations about one of the ancestors of The Minstril. His dam *Bahila, traces through Nasralla, to a horse raced by Henri Pharaon and later used for breeding at the RAS. In 2003, El Nasser was accepted as a Foundation Horse by Al Khamsa after new research documented the horse’s provenance. When you began to breed to The Minstril, did you have any concern about this issue?
The issue you bring up about The Minstril has been hotly debated and in 2003 was pretty much put to bed once and for all when Al Khamsa documented the purity of his lineage. Of course, The Pyramid Society had already accepted these horses long ago. It’s funny — none of this ever came up until The Minstril and his foals began to win so much. We did not lose much sleep over the talk as we knew his lines were pure. The Minstril was a great horse. He was so influential to the breed and I think it’s sad that some felt the need to imply to newcomers that there was something wrong with his pedigree. Judy and I totally respect that breeders around the world choose the bloodlines they like and wish to breed. Judy uses a variety of different bloodlines in her program. She thinks the genetic pool is so small anyway that she would never count out blood from any breeder’s program. She buys horses of other bloodlines to complement hers quite often. I do think people should breed what they like and not follow trends. If a breeder is true to his or her own vision, it all seems to work out in the end.

rabians Ltd. is not a standalone program. Really integral to the whole story is the amazing group of people at the center of the whole experience. That for sure starts with the Affiliate farms. The Affiliate farms allow our clients and friends to receive the same level of service and care around the U.S. as they would in Texas. Their successes at the 2012 Egyptian Event show the knowledge and support they offer to our clients. Mike Cimino of Colthill Crescent Arabians, Folsom, Louisiana, is the longest established of the group. Mike is one of those generous “give you the shirt off his back” guys. His clients showed four horses and brought home three Championships and a Reserve. Mark and Debra Burke of Amethyst Acres Equine Inc. are near Roanoke, Virginia. Their two Reserves and three Top Tens show the quality of stock they are helping clients acquire. Lisa Cifrese and Richard Geha of Thornewood Farm, Stockton, New Jersey, took home two Reserves; they have some of the rarest Egyptians in North America. The newest members of the team, Ken and Karen Shutts of Lone Star Arabians, were rewarded with one reserve a bunch of Top Tens. You will not find a more dedicated, enthusiastic, loyal group of people in any business. And the clients of the Affiliate farms are family. Judy and I were so proud and happy for this bunch at the Event this year.

As a regular attendee of the Egyptian Event, it was impossible not to recognize the quality that comes into the ring from their barn. This year I had the honor of spending intimate time with Judy and Shawn and her team of professionals at the Event. Seeing that operation from behind the scenes was quite interesting. First, you notice the great time and effort given to the care and happiness of each horse. Second, the attention to detail that goes into giving every horse in their large string the best advantage in the ring. I was raised to respect and seek a strong foundation in a breeding program.
