sraeli National I Championship Show THE 29TH ANNUAL ISRAELI NATIONAL SHOW was the largest show ever held in Israel, with over 180 entries, proving the ever-increasing popularity of Arabians here. A first-time visitor to this show was immediately impressed by two things: the caliber of the horses, who would be competitive anywhere in the world, and the multinational nature of the exhibitors and spectators. The Israeli Nationals felt like a United Nations gathering, with Arabs, Jews, Druze, and Christians all cooperating with one another in order to put on a successful show. The unrest in the Middle East has no place here, as those who attend are joined by their love of the Arabian horse. The show had a wonderful party atmosphere, despite the unseasonable heat (over 100 degrees Fahrenheit each day), with attendees sharing food and drink with their neighbors and cheering raucously for their favorites, showing their enthusiasm by beating drums, shaking ricefilled balloons, blowing horns, and so on. This year’s show was held at Kibbutz Yifat in the Jezreel Valley, which had good stabling for the entries as well as many shade trees under which spectators tried to keep cool in the heat. Their passion was infectious, particularly when two or more horses had the same points and had to be reshown comparatively to break the tie. The music accompanying the classes added a lot to the excitement, with some hypnotic drum music accompanying horses’ entrances. Israel’s national shows are ECAHO recognized and are conducted under the European point system, except for the weanling classes, which are judged by the comparative method. Judges for this year’s competition were Dr. Marek Trela of Poland (the director of the Janow Podlawski Stud), Pierluigi Rota of Italy, and Koenraad Detailleur of Belgium. These gentleman proved tough to please, with many of the scores lower than anticipated by the spectators, prompting one internationally known breeder to comment “They are not giving anything away this time!” The competition

also had its first international steward, and a number of yellow warnings were given to exhibitors for a variety of rule violations that included hoof painting, makeup on the face, face shaving, and ginger usage. It was educational for owners and spectators alike for infractions to be announced when the horses came into the ring. The significance of the Israeli National Show on the international scene was evidenced by the many international handlers, with trainers from Germany, Italy, and the United States leading many of the entries. The presentations during lunch breaks and between classes were a special treat. On the first day, the crowd enjoyed a dressage demonstration by the straight Crabbet stallion Sabra Jupiter, a former Israeli Futurity Champion who has competed successfully against all breeds in open competition. On the second day, showgoers were treated to a lively belly-dancing display during the lunch break, and prior to the championship classes there were presentations of last year’s National Champion Mare, the superb moving JPJ Talai, and National Champion Stallion A Sharif Pasha (also a top ten winner at the World Championship show in Paris). The final presentation was the amazing Laheeb, who was paraded into the arena to the cheers of the ecstatic crowd to be presented with the WAHO Trophy, an exclusive award given in each member country annually to horses with special lifetime achievements.

The classes for weanlings proved very popular, with the dams of the foals often brought in with their offspring, affording spectators an unusual opportunity to see how much the foals resembled their mothers. The colt foal class was won by Prince Sinan whose sire, 2008 Israeli Reserve National Champion Nader Al Jamal had four sons competing. Nader Al Jamal (Ansata Sinan x Savannah CC), a straight Egyptian, was imported on lease by Ariela Arabians and sired many of the winners in the weanling classes. Prince Sinan went on to be named the Weanling Colt Champion on the second day of the show. Second to him was the very typey Abyad AA, also by Nader Al Jamal and out of Al Amal AA, who is now owned by Ferdinand Huemer of Austria, later named Colt Foal Reserve Champion. Third place went to Simply Marc, a son of the European sensation QR Marc who was imported to Israel in utero. The second class of the show was the yearling filly class, which was split into two sections. The overall quality of the horses in this class was very high — many of the fillies could easily compete at the top-level shows anywhere in the world. The winner of the first section with a score of 91.6 was Donya, who had the best neck in her class, excellent balance, a pretty head, and good legs. Not surprisingly, she went on to be named the Silver Champion Filly (equivalent to Reserve National Champion). She also has a very international pedigree. She is by Nader Al Jamal out of the 2005 Israeli Reserve National Champion Filly Aroussa. The second section of the yearling fillies was won by Nashwah AA, a daughter of the recently deceased Al Ayad and the eventual 2009 Israeli National Champion Mare, Insha Sha Latifa. Her overall point score of 90 included 19s on type and head and neck from all three judges. She had been the 2008 Champion Weanling Filly. A very interesting filly in this class was Doryt, a rare straight Crabbet from Sabra Arabians, one of the few remaining straight Crabbet breeders in the world. She had excellent motion and good balance, though the judges found her less attractive than the top-placed fillies. Her sire Sabra Soli Flame is a former Israeli National Champion. The two-year-old filly class was split into two sections and had some of the best females at the show. Winner of section A was the straight Egyptian American import O Rosettas Princess (True Colours x FW Rosetta Rose), the crowd favorite, who received two 20s for movement. The second section of this class was won by the Israeli-bred and Lithuanian-owned Nawal AA (Al Maraam x Insha Sha Latifa), a half 3 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b JANUARY 2010

sister to yearling filly class winner Nashwah AA. Nawal AA, last year’s Reserve National Champion Filly, was named winner after a three-way tie in points with another Al Maraam daughter, Zlota Gwiazda (bred by Poland’s Michalow Stud), and the very typey straight Egyptian filly Bayan Al Mochtar (Sahji Al Naif x MB Kaydeena). All three fillies were excellent examples of the breed, with Bayan Al Mochtar scoring highest on movement and Nawal AA on type. Of the nine fillies who competed in the three-year-old class, six were sired by multi-Israeli National Champion Stallion Laheeb and three of them placed in the top five in the class. Class winner was the straight Egyptian Loubana, a Laheeb daughter whose trot was recognized by the judges with three scores of 19, and whose tall elegance is typical of the Laheeb get. She was later named the high-scoring horse of the show with 91.66 points overall, though in the junior championship class she ranked third, earning a bronze medal. Second to Loubana was the lovely AA Halima (Laheeb x Blue Chelwa). Following the three-year-old filly class, the focus shifted back to the colts. The first colt class was the yearlings, won by the American-bred straight Egyptian Extremme RSA by True Colours, giving his sire two class winners at this show (the other being the two-year-old filly O Rosettas Princess). He had an excellent score of 91.33 overall. A few weeks after the show True Colours himself was leased for the 2010 breeding season to RB Arabians of Moshav Ben Ami near the Lebanese border. Second to Extremme was Razal Al Jamal, sired by the double Imperial Imdal stallion Al Manar. Razal Al Jamal had a good neck and a smooth body, and his lovely head is no accident as his dam KZ Jalisa was a former Israeli Most Classic Head winner. The two-year-old colt class was divided into two sections. The first was one of the most exciting classes at the show as it was hotly contested due to a tie between the eventual first-place winner, who was undefeated in halter in Israel, and the second-place colt, who came from a Druze village and it seemed most of its population turned up to offer support for their 4 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

favorite. The winner, with 89.66 points overall and three 19s for type, was Mouadaar BKV, a son of Al Bilal (bred by Eli Maslati and sold to Ajman Stud in the UAE). Mouadaar BKV is out of the American import Barakis Whisper. The second-place colt, HV Basran Ibn Sinan, is an American import by international sire Ansata Sinan out of a daughter of World Reserve Champion Imperial Baarez. He exuded substance and quality, and the judges had a very tough decision to make! The second section of two-year-old colts saw Al Sakab Al Haiyal the victor, with a score of 88.3. Second to him was the excellent riding type KZ Layton, a son of the American import MH Weston (*Muscat x a Khemosabi daughter). The final class of the first day of the show was three-year-old colts, and four of the five placings went to sons of Laheeb. The judges must have had a hard time deciding on the winners as the class was so deep in quality. The super-typey and exotic Al Raheb AA, a full brother to World Champion Stallion Al Lahab, emerged victorious. This Laheeb son is out of Israeli National Champion Mare The Vision HG, and earned straight 19s from all three judges for head and neck and type. Second to him was the double Imperial Imdal grandson Leran AA, also a horse of stunning beauty whose

dam, Latifah AA, is a former Israeli National Champion Mare. Deserving special mention was the good-moving Laheeb son EH Derey, who placed fifth. The second day of the show dawned sunny and even hotter than the first day. The first two classes were for weanling fillies, and the first section was one of the deepest classes at the show with gorgeous fillies one after the other. The winner, straight Egyptian Lutfina AA, is a stunning example of type. She is by Nader Al Jamal and out of Latifah AA, who also produced the second-placed three-year-old colt. Second to her was the pretty Simeon Sharav daughter Mona Liza, who had excellent substance for a weanling and looked as if she will be a good athlete when she matures. In the second class for weanling fillies, three of the five ribbon winners were by Nader Al Jamal, including the winner, SA Al Zahara, whose dam is double Imperial Imdal. Second to her was Salsabil Al Jamal by Al Manar. Next up was the four-year-old mare class, which had three Laheeb get or grandget out of five horses who placed. Winning the class with 91 points was the Laheeb daughter AA Aseele, who had such exquisite type, excellent conformation, and remarkable presence that it was hard to look at any other horse in the ring at the start of the class. Her overall score of 91 included three 19s for head and neck and two 19s and an 18 for type. She is out of a daughter of MH Weston and her grandam was a straight Crabbet import. She is a full sister to AA Assal, twice Israeli Reserve Junior Champion Colt and now a winner in Europe. Second to her was another Laheeb daughter, Omniet Al Ayun, who had a lovely walk and trot and an overall balanced and typey appearance. The judges appreciated her movement, giving her a 20 and two 19s, making her overall score 90.67. Omniet’s dam is by the American-bred MH Weston, a *Muscat son out of a Khemosabi daughter, a highly respected broodmare sire. The five-year-old mare class was small, but featured another of the show’s tiebreakers, in this case for first and second place, as two mares both scored 90.6. The winner, A Barcelona, had bloodlines very different from many of the other horses at the show as she was straight Spanish. A powerful mare with a floating trot, huge eyes, and a lovely neck, she was awarded one 20 for type and three 19s for movement. Her dam, VD 6 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD

Daquebria, also produced the 2007 Israeli Reserve National Champion Stallion, A Nadim. Second place was awarded to the straight Egyptian Zara TDD, a pretty True Colours daughter who is typical of her sire’s get. She had three 19s for type, movement, and head and neck. The next mare class, for six- and seven-year-olds, yielded one of the show’s stars, Insha Sha Latifa, a straight Egyptian daughter of Ansata Selman and Naffada, an Israeli-bred Imdal daughter out of Imperial Naffata. She was imported from Germany by Ariela Arabians. Insha Sha Latifa was awarded a well-deserved 90.3 points, and was also the show’s leading dam of winners as her daughters Nashwah AA and Nawal AA won their respective classes and Nashwah AA went on to win the Gold Junior Champion Filly as well. Last year Insha Sha Latifa was Reserve National Champion Mare and her daughters Nashwah AA and Nawal AA were Champion Filly Foal and Reserve Junior Champion Filly respectively. The final mare class, for those eight and over, had the fewest entries of the show. First place went to Nazra, whose sire Labib is a full brother to Laheeb. She won with 89 points, which included two 19s for movement. Her owners were elated with the win, and hoisted their son onto her back with her winning plaque held high over his head for the photographer to capture their joy, a most memorable moment! The second- and third-place mares, True Magidaa by True Colours and Famiaa by Ruminaja Fayez, were both imports from America. The remaining stallion classes saw excitement reach a fever pitch with the spectators, some of whom tried to climb into the ring while their favorites were showing! The straight Egyptian American import Hals Moonshadow won the four-year-old class. His overall score, of 91.33, included three 19s for movement and for type. A successful show horse in America as well, he won the Junior Champion Colt title at the 2006 Egyptian Event in Lexington. The class for five- and six-year-old stallions had perhaps the best males at the show. Winning the class was the free-moving and elegant AA Al Bashyr, son of international champion and Israeli Reserve National Champion Stallion Al Maraam, the leading sire of show champions in Israel, currently on lease to Valley Oak Arabians in the United States. AA Al Bashyr is out of an imported German mare who comes from the same family as The Minstril. He was Israeli Reserve National Champion Colt in 2006, has twice won the Most Classic Head class at the Israeli Nationals, and has recently returned from his 2008 lease to the U.S. The judges appreciated his movement, giving him a 20 and two 19s, and he also received two well-deserved 19s and a 20 for type. Placing second to him was the elegant and masculine Jo’ad, also straight Egyptian, sired by KZ Alone out of Atiq Donia, a daughter of former Israeli Reserve National Champion Mare Nahbelle. The final class for mature stallions nine and over was a vision of dancing silver horses — all the stallions who competed were snowwhite and full of type and presence, a delight to watch. Chosen first with 91.3 points was the beautiful mover KZ Rian, a straight Egyptian grandson of Imperial Imdal out of an Imperial Madheen daughter imported from Canada. Second to him was the former Israeli Reserve National Champion Stallion A Nadim, sired by Kamsin Rodan, a son

Bottom: The final presentation was the amazing Laheeb IASB (Imperial Imdal x AK Latifa), who was paraded into the arena to the cheers of the ecstatic crowd to be presented with the WAHO Trophy, an exclusive award given in each member country annually to horses with special lifetime achievements. Laheeb was presented with his award by Micha Regev, chairman of the Israel Arab Horse Society, along with Marek Trela, head of the Janow Podlawski Stud in Poland where Laheeb stood on lease, and Raymond Mazzei of California, who leased him for several American breeding seasons.

of Ansata Sinan, imported from Germany, and out of VD Daquebria, dam of A Barcelona, winner of the five-year-old mare class. Of the 12 winners in the championship classes, only three were imports, proving that the breeding of quality horses in Israel has truly come of age. Eight of the 12 have connections to Israel’s largest and most important breeder, Ariela Arabians. The emphasis on straight Egyptian breeding was evident from the 12 championship winners — only three were not straight Egyptian, and of those, two were Egyptian-related. The Gold National Champion Filly Nashwah AA is a daughter of the Gold National Champion Mare Insha Sha Latifa. Silver National Champion Filly (Reserve National Champion) went to the super-typey Donya, with the Bronze Filly title going to Loubana, who had the highest point score of any horse at the show. Gold Junior Champion Colt Moudaar BKV remained undefeated in Israel, with the Silver Junior Champion going to Extremme RSA and the Bronze to Al Raheb AA. The Gold Mare Champion was Insha Sha Latifa, with Silver being awarded to AA Aseela and Bronze to the straight Spanish A Barcelona. The Stallion Championship was the most exciting class at the show, with raucous cheering for each of the eight contestants in the ring. AA Al Bashyr triumphed as the Gold National Champion with Hals Moonshadow the Silver Champion and Buraq Al Nafous from the Palestinian territories taking the Bronze. The Israeli Nationals should be on every Arabian horse lover’s show itinerary for travel as it is a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the friendliest breeders in the world and their superb horses!
