REGIONAL WRAP-UP 2009 Region 1 May 27-31, Del Mar, California The 30th annual Region 1 Championship show was held the last weekend in May and featured a preshow, $15,000 in prizes and prize money, a onestop progressive dinner, and more.

The overcast and rainy weather didn’t affect performances at this year’s show due to the new covered performance arena. “The horses seemed to like it,” says Ali Brady, who was Reserve Champion in both purebred and Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse classes. “Although the classes weren’t large, it’s clear that the overall quality continues to rise. There was good competition. You’d be thinking ‘one of these horses is probably going to be national champion.’

“The highlight for me was getting to watch Eden C and Ever After NA compete for the champion stallion title.

It was a real toss-up — they’re both such magnificent horses. It was a very special moment just watching them.”

“It’s an interesting circumstance to show in a three-horse class, with first and second being the National and Reserve National Champion futurity colts from last year,” says Greg Gallún, who showed Eden C to the win. “These are two of the best young stallions in the nation — if not the world. Eden came in the ring with his tail over his back. He stopped and snorted about four or five times.

6. through that building. He looked great — you can’t deny him. He has a great blend of physical size and power and he’s dropdead beautiful.”

Greg Gallún also showed 2005 Polish National Junior Champion Filly *Pinga (*Gazal Al Shaqab x Pilar) to the Champion Mare win. The 2004 bay mare, recently leased from Poland, was with foal at side during the show. “*Pinga showed beautifully,” says Greg. “I think she stands a great chance for us at this year’s Nationals. She’s very much along the same lines as *Pianissima, maybe not quite as exotic, but she’s close — and she can really move. Last year at the Polish Nationals she was the high scorer of the show in movement. She is one of Janow’s best young Gazal daughters.”

Marjie Becker garnered two wins in Champion Half-Arabian Hunter Pleasure and Champion Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse with ROL Cymply Hot (Cytosk x Dancity) and DBA Krugerrand (Huxley x LV Seymoure), respectively. “Cymply Hot is a great horse — he’s big and pretty, and he’s got a neck a mile long,” she says.

“He’s easy and doesn’t take a lot of work.

Krugerrand’s another really nice horse.

This is one of the only shows I get to show him at. He’s a beautiful horse and a real trooper.

“Region 1 probably has the best hunters in the country,” Marjie continues.

“There’s a big history of hunter pleasure horses in that area.” Marjie’s husband Bret Becker was Champion Western Pleasure with Kharismatic PGA (*Khadraj NA x Aphrodite FA).

Greg Hazlewood won Champion Half-Arabian Stock/Hunter Mare with UB My Friend (NNL Ultimate Bey x Miss Friendship), who also won Reserve Champion Mare at Scottsdale earlier this year (her first time out). “She’s a great, typey Half-Arabian mare,” says Greg.

“When we found her, she was a backyard horse who had never shown halter in her life. My wife and I saw her, loved her, and convinced her owner to send her to us.”

Jim Lowe rode twelve-year-old Papa Rhazi (*El Ghazi x Mama Jazz), for owner Brie Reiter, Aptos, California, to the Championship in the Half-Arabian English Pleasure class. Papa Rhazi was also Scottsdale Reserve Champion Half-Arabian English Pleasure AOTR earlier this year. “Seven years ago this was one of the best two English horses in the country — and now he’s almost as good as he was then,” Jim says. “He’s as exciting as any English horse there is on the West Coast, without a doubt. He has a wicked silhouette and is as outrageous looking as any horse you’ll see at a horse show — the kind of horse where people will go to the ring just to see him show. I was totally excited to get to show him, especially in that new arena at Del Mar.” Jim also rode the four-year-old grey gelding Forte Afire VF (Afire Bey V x Duet VF), to win Region 1 Champion Country English Pleasure horse. “He’s the biggest, highest purebred I’ve ever ridden,” Jim says. “When someone says they have a really big horse, my first thought is that it’s going to be a big hunter, but this horse can trot — he’s really pretty with tons of quality.

“The covered arena at Del Mar had the ambience of Tingley, Louisville, and Springfield — it made you feel like you were at a big-time horse show,” says Jim. “The Half-Arabian English ATR class (won by rider Cheryl Fortun with her horse 2 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b OCTOBER 2009

Region 2 June 18-20, Santa Barbara, California Strolling mariachis provided a festive atmosphere for the Friday evening barn parties at the Region 2 in Santa Barbara, California. After several years in Burbank, the Region 2 Championships were back in Santa Barbara, and many exhibitors told us that’s the reason they came to Region 2 this year. “We love the Santa Barbara area, and as soon as we heard the show was moving, we decided to go,” says Lori Cantero of Upland, California. Lori went Champion Western Pleasure ATR 40 and Over with her stallion Khontroversy PGA (*Khadraj NA x Enfenee).

“What a spectacular show it was! Everything ran like clockwork thanks to multitasking Region 2 director and show manager, Jeff Reichman,” says Caroline Maupin of San Carlos, California. “Patron director Joyce Schroeder arranged the live mariachi music as guests sampled everything from Crimson Farms’ famous smoked ribs to chocolate mousse at Beethe Arabians. Manny Lawrence at Jade Creek always has a full house; his hospitality is most welcome. Among the large field of entries could be found national champion after national champion, each one deserving and poised to be recognized. The Arabian Show Hack Championship unfolded dramatically and the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Championship was as challenging as any in recent years. Not to be outdone, no one held back in the finals. Some of the top performances were as brilliant as anything I have seen at the National level.”

“To enable the return to Santa Barbara, I had to divide the show into two sections,” says Region 2 director Jeff Reichman. “The ‘main ring’ section ended on Saturday, June 21, and the sport horse/dressage and hunter/jumper moved in on Sunday, June 22, and ran through Thursday, June 25. We are up about 10 percent in number of horses and well over 20 percent in class entries (even though the second half of the show was way down). I didn’t dare dream the show would be this successful in these economic times.”

Carey Grant), was unbelievable. This is California — and you’d think we were in the Midwest. There were 12 English horses in that class, and ten real good ones out of those. English has always been much stronger in the Midwest and East Coast, but I think people are buying more English horses and bringing them this way.”

Sandro Pinha showed the Champion Yearling Filly Pschalla (*Magnum Chall HVP x Sweet Psyrrender), who was also high-point horse of the show (“she scored 38 points higher than the second-place filly,” says Sandro), and the Champion Mare Estancia LL (Magnum Psyche x CF Khashmir). “This was the first time I had been to Santa Barbara — I enjoyed the beaches!” Sandro says. “And I drove to Santa Ynez one day — I had never been there either. The whole area is amazing.”

“It was great to be back in Santa Barbara for Region 2,” says Manny Lawrence of Jade Creek Arabians. “The weather and the ambience was terrific.

The show was loaded with quality in most divisions and all the exhibitors seemed overjoyed to get out of Burbank.

Jade Creek had a great show with many champions and reserves, mostly in halter.

One of the highlights for me was my own six-year-old gelding Vargas JCA making his debut in Western Pleasure — he was stunning and I’m sure he made ‘pop’ Jake Jamaal JCA quite proud.”

“The show committee did a great job of catering to the exhibitors,” says trainer Brett Becker of Grass Valley, California.

“They brought food from the patrons lounge to our stalls, had an ice cream social, and a mariachi band strolled the grounds. Shows need to do more of that kind of thing. We all had a great time.

Santa Barbara is a much better venue than Burbank, which is why we’ve gone to Region 4 instead of Region 2 in recent years. Our customers came from as far as Kentucky and the weather was perfect. I’d rather show in Santa Barbara any day.”

The Beckers also had plenty of success in the ring. “I showed the unanimous Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse Sonoma Jazz (Versace x Sonoma Chiffon); Champion Western Pleasure Kharismatic PGA (*Khadraj NA x Aphrodite FA); and Champion HalfArabian Western Pleasure Slow Gin Fizzz (Half Shot x Cyrkowka). Other winners we had a chance to watch: Harold Green aboard his lovely grey mare EVG Megyn (Saladins Allon x Gai Anastashah), Champion Western Pleasure 55 and Over, Kirsten McKillop and Kool Enuff (TF Totally Kool x CRM Kopper Kandi), Champion in the Hunter Pleasure JOTR 14-17; and Samantha Hilliard aboard EVG Jericho (*Pershahn El Jamaal x Berryantka V) in the Hunter ATR 40 and Over.

And then there was Jill Contreras on her new hunter CP Marquis (Baske Afire x CP Princess) winning the AAOTR 36-54 Championship. Overall, the hunter pleasure classes were beautiful.

“The ambience and quality at both Regions 1 and 2 were as good as any horse show you’d go to,” says Jim Lowe. “The best thing they ever did was move the Region 2 show from Burbank back to the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. It’s been 4 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b OCTOBER 2009

Region 3 July 7-11, Reno, Nevada “As always, Region 3 was a very exciting show with large classes and well attended by the public,” says Sandro Pinha of San Rose Arabians, Westmont, Illinois. “As with all of our shows, the numbers were a little down, but it was by far one of the largest Regionals I have been to this year. I was extremely excited about my young stallion Gemini VII (Legacy Of Fame x Precious Legacy) who was named Champion Stallion of the show, as well as the high-point halter horse of the show. This was Gemini’s second horse show, (he was Reserve Champion in Las Vegas) and I can’t wait to 17.

take him to Tulsa and the Futurity Stallion competition. I would like to extend my congratulations to Region 3 organizers who continue to put a great show together.”

“Region 3 was by far the best Regional show we attended this year,” says Manny Lawrence of Jade Creek Arabians, Santa Ynez, California. “The quality and competition in the halter arena was incredible. There were three stallions in the stallion class that will certainly be heard from at the U.S. Futurities this October. The mare class was also incredible — the winner was our very own Fellada JCA (my personal favorite moment of the show). The weather was also great — not Reno’s usual blazing hot temperature. Spectators and exhibitors appeared to have a great time with the barn parties, and of course, the Reno entertainment scene. I did not get to see the performance classes, but I understand the classes were large and the competition was excellent. It was nice to see the number of the halter classes in the 15-20 entrant range, and I think judging was very good and fair.”

“What a thrill it was for us to watch our extremely talented horse take the tricolor in his showring debut,” says Allyssa Baird, Mistikal Marketing Centre, LLC, whose bay stallion CP Limelight won Champion English Pleasure. “We are certain there are more in his future.

He has so much ahead of him and he just continues to get better and better!

“I was unanimous Champion in Half-Arabian Country Pleasure with HCA Sultan’s Ghabrail, which was handsdown the highlight of our show. Gabe is a barn favorite and just a true-blue kind of horse. It was so refreshing to see him rewarded unanimously! The moment when he trotted down the victory pass with his long neck and beautiful long flowing tail was a moment none of us will soon forget.”

“Both the Champion and Reserve Champion Country English Pleasure Junior horses at Region 3 were bred by

resurrected from just a show to a big-time horse show — Jeff Reichman, who runs the show, should be commended.”

Susanne Mackrell of Crimson Farms scored a Championship in Mare Halter AOTH with *GH Marwana (*Marwan Al Shaqab x Verona RA), and Crimson Farms’ trainer Rich Simpkins showed Just Jammin CF (Allusion AOF x Jammin Like Crazy) to the Championship in the Half-Arabian Yearling Sweepstakes Filly class. Allectri Phi CF (Allusion AOF x Jammin Like Crazy) had a great go with Joanne Chavez in the Half-Arabian Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse class bringing home another Championship for Crimson.

“We would like to thank Jeff and Region 2 for bringing the show back to Earl Warren and congratulate them for not only putting on a well-run show but for making the show enjoyable for those of us exhibiting there,” says Susanne.

Because Afire Doll is my U.S. National contender, I asked Gretchen McDaniel to catch ride Red Zeppelin (My Generation x Zucharita). At only four years old, he’s super good-minded and won Reserve Champion at only his second show!

“Sir Magnifeke (JA Magnificat x Sirah Bey), owned by J. D. O’Neill, was the only entry in the Park class, so we decided to have some fun,” Todd continues. “I rode in wearing a white glove while they played “Beat It” over the loudspeakers in tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Sir Magnifeke is a tremendous competitor, and at the age of 16, still loves to show and is as strong as ever.

The Region 3 off-site Working Hunter Championship was held May 15 in Elk Grove, California, and the off-site Sport Horse Championship was held August 14-16 in Rancho Murieta, California.

Of Champion Mare Eternetys Alahadi (Eternety x Mi Mistical Magic), trainer Travis Hansen says, “She is a tremendous reflection of her National Champion sire with her showring presence and charisma. She’s smooth and elegant with a great length of leg; the epitome of form to function. You just want to jump on and ride. The quality of her class was high, so I was thrilled when she was named Champion! She was also Canadian National Top Ten Two-YearOld Filly this year, and will begin her futurity year at Scottsdale 2010.”

Region 7 April 23-26, Scottsdale, Arizona The Region 7 show, held at Westworld in Scottsdale, experienced a relatively good turnout, with the halter classes up from last year, and 90-degree weather.

Champion Mare was PA Miss Noon Tyme (PA Hi-Noon x Miss Pryme Tyme), owned by John Nord, Bloomington, Illinois, and shown by Greg Hazelwood.

“The horses were great,” says judge Lori Conway. “There were some great halter trainers there. The yearling colt and filly, Troubadour PA (*Magnum Chall HVP x Psyches Secret) and RD Challs Angel (*Magnum Chall HVP x Bey Angel TGS), in particular stood out as being phenomenal. And the three-yearold stallion Pstrategy (Padrons Psyche x Bey Shahs Lady) was exceptional. Bob Battaglia had a cool dark bay HalfArabian English Pleasure horse, Second Sight (Afires Vision x Silver Fantasy PV) — all three of the top horses in that class were National-caliber — that class was fun to judge.”

One of the largest classes of the show was Champion Western Pleasure AATR 40 and Over (16 entries) won by Garth MH (*Khadraj NA x Dancing Gdynia), owned and ridden by Rebecca Bell, Golden Valley, Minnesota.

Region 10 became the first regional show in the country to use a five-judge system for its halter classes, removing the highest and lowest card on each horse, as was done at the Nationals for the first time last year.

According to Lori Conway, the idea came about after the convention when the resolution to rescind the Arabian Scoring system was defeated. “Ann Benson, Christine Rickert, and myself decided to incorporate the five-judge system and add prize money as an incentive to show in our halter division.

Regional director Van Jacobson was on board as well. Show manager Nancy Miller agreed to the change, but only if outside funding was raised to cover the costs. Two additional judges (Cindy Reich and Terry Holmes) were contacted and graciously agreed to lower their normal fee in order to keep costs down.

“We wanted to do an ‘added prize money’ for the Breeding classes and a large number of breeders and exhibitors stepped in to donate money. Even people who would not be attending the show donated in order to support this idea and provide an incentive to show in halter at the Region 10 show. We were able to attract some exceptional horses and were able to pay the four purebred breeding classes a substantial amount of money,” Lori continues. “As far as I know, we are the ONLY regional that did this program. It was a success from a judging standpoint and I feel from an exhibitor’s point of view, it is the fairest way to place the class.

Region 12 May 5-9, Perry, Georgia The Region 12 show took place in Perry, Georgia, just south of Atlanta. The show is one of the best-run venues for featuring Arabians, Half-Arabians, and Anglo-Arabians. This show is exceptionally exhibitor friendly, welcoming owners, trainers, and horses from all over the United States and abroad.

“Region 12 is an amalgamation of a well-oiled show machine featuring an excellent facility with outstanding horse competition,” says Roxann Hart of Rohara Arabians. “It’s grown into one of the premier shows in the country and is one of the largest regions for the numbers of horses presented.”

“The quality of this show was as good as it was last year,” adds trainer Beth Ann Graves, who brought 17 horses.

“The indoor arena is great and there are plenty of warm-up arenas, which is nice.”

Highlights for Beth Ann included her own Championship win in the Hunter Pleasure Open class with Star Intention (*Dakar El Jamaal x Starilla), and her assistant trainer Jennifer Price taking Reserve in the same class with Esprit D Amorr (Amadorr x CA Cameo Bey).

An overall highlight for Beth Ann was Christine Johnson’s performance in the English Pleasure Open class with the eight-year-old chestnut stallion VJ Justaflame (Justafire DGL x Blush Berri V).

“I also won Reserve Half-Arabian Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse with WP Vanuatu (Oran Van Bandy x Stelladora),” says Beth Ann. “Half-Arabian and HalfSaddlebred, Vanuatu is a beautiful horse to watch going down the rail; he looks like he’s ready to go over a fence. He’s long, refined, hooky, showy, and a good clean mover — a true hunter!”

The Region 12 Spotlight Stallion Futurity auction and futurity classes are always a high point of the show. The auction is a gala event, giving attendees the opportunity to bid on breedings from premier stallions. Yearling Fillies/Colts ATH combined payout is over $32,000; Two-year-old Fillies/Colts/Geldings ATH combined payout is over $11,000.

“The auction was up over $20,000,” says Roxann. “This program is increasingly active and growing. 2010 will host the first auction classes (with a combined payout of over $51,000). Mare and stallion nominations are also up in numbers, which will increase revenue back to the breeders and competitors.”

The Region 12 off-site Hunter/ Jumper Championship was held June 6 in Conyers, Georgia.

Region 13 June 18-21, Indianapolis, Indiana Matisse FM (*Marwan Al Shaqab x Selket Promise Kept) was named Champion Stallion at the show. “He has a beautiful standup — he’s tall and long-legged with his dam’s short face and his sire’s long neck,” says breeder Cathy Wright of Full Moon Arabians, Michigan. “Not yet a three-year-old, he’s already 15.3 hands with the look of a mature stallion. After winning the Region 13 stallion championship Matisse, thanks to Mario Zerlotti, was sold to a breeder in Brazil and will be shown at the Brazilian Nationals.”

Hunter Pleasure. “Big, solid white, big black eyes, ears touching, long tail, and a stud — so good he glances at the girls yet stays focused. And he has manners, presence, and intelligence. Short warmup and it’s let’s go! Star is the complete package, dead-on forward motion, the best hunter I’ve ever ridden. Not even my skirt being blown around his belly during our sidesaddle class fazed him, although his displeasure resulted in a Top Ten. “The show was exhibitor friendly and efficient, yet made time for tack holds.

A storm came in and one of the barns was hit by lightning. The classes were postponed, started up, postponed again, and then held in the large arena — warmups were interesting! The patrons lounge was great and had wonderful food.”

Despite hot weather and lightning storms, Region 14 operated like a welloiled machine, thanks to veteran show organizer Cindy Clinton and her team.

“We’ve worked together for years,” she says. “Everyone knows his or her job and it gets done.”

The show was up in numbers with more than 600 horses competing, thanks in large part to scheduling of other Regional shows. In previous years there had been conflicts with Regions 15 and 11, but this year Region 14 took place earlier than its neighboring Regional shows. “Our show has always been one of the largest and we probably get more people from outside the region than anybody,” says Cindy. “But when it comes down to showing at your own region or

going to another region, people usually stay close to home. We were able to get a lot of those people back this year.”

Exhibitors enjoyed perhaps the show’s biggest plus this year — the new, million-dollar footing that was incorporated in the outdoor rings.

“It’s wonderful,” says Cindy. “After these major storms, we could use it immediately. Also, the inside footing that we’ve always had was the best it’s ever been.”

The show was well attended, despite the slackening economy. Out of 1,070 stalls, show organizers counted only 100 empty ones. “I figured we’d have a major cut in tack stalls and things like that, and we didn’t,” Cindy says. “I think people are picking the shows they’re going to more carefully. They’re picking what they need. They don’t need a class A show to go to for fun right now. They’re trying to get qualified to go to Nationals.”

Differences from previous Region 14 shows? Increased numbers in halter competition, for one. “I don’t know why,” Cindy says. “We also had more western exhibitors. Gary Ferguson came from Texas — he’s been so supportive to the reining division.” The schedule was changed a bit this year, and show 11 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b OCTOBER 2009

organizers incorporated a couple of new elements, like an expanded halfday preshow. “We also had some new concessions this year,” notes Cindy.

“Everyone loved that.”

Highlights? Aside from fabulous competition in just about every class, Midwest Arabian Centre hosted a wellattended lunchtime party celebrating Da Vinci FM and his foals. On Saturday afternoon a fundraising “pie in the face” contest was held to raise money for Region 14 youth. Nominees Joe Reser, Dale Brown, Beth Ann Graves, Jim Stachowski, Peter Stachowski, Travis Rice, Rob Bick, Caralyn Schroter, Terry Holmes, Jim Lowe and Cindy Clinton were brought into the main ring to take a cream pie in the face — in all they raised $4,192. The crowd roared as the top five money raisers (Joe Reser, Jim Stachowski, Travis Rice, Rob Bick, and Terry Holmes) all got a pie in the face!
