the stallions of
Al Shaqab T
he whole world knows the mighty trinity of the Al Shaqab breeding program — Al Adeed, Gazal, and Marwan — there are hardly more famous living stallions in the Arabian breed. We asked Al Shaqab breeding and show manager, Mohammed Al Sulaiti, what comes to mind when he thinks of each of these three treasures. “When I look at Al Adeed I see classic beauty and conformation. He is a difficult horse to fault, a consistent and reliable sire. “Gazal is the foundation of Al Shaqab and I don’t know how to put that feeling into words while giving Gazal due credit — words are not enough — but he is, I believe, our true foundation. “When I think of Marwan I think of the extreme — his extreme Arabian characteristics, his extreme ability as a sire, and the feeling of pride, extreme pride — it is fair to say no other horse brings greater credibility to Al Shaqab and the nation of Qatar.” Al Shaqab’s bench is deep, with several young guns joining the lineup in 2013. We asked Mohammed Al Sulaiti how the candidates for junior sire are selected. “The truth is, we never know a horse’s breeding ability until the foals are born and even then there are many variables. For example, it is not fair to judge an individual who produces a disproportionate number of offspring of the same gender. The most promising junior stallions are evaluated regularly and it is our goal to give these individuals every opportunity to reach their full potential. Show results have absolutely no bearing on the decision to include or exclude any junior stallion, or filly for that matter, in the breeding program. “Al Adeed, Gazal, and Marwan remain our priority when making breeding decisions, and therefore, we are not able to afford every promising junior stallion a large number of mares. This is the primary reason we established the stallion leasing program. “Because of accomplished breeders such as Joaquin de Santibañes of Argentina, Jody Cruz of the U.S., Jenny and Peter Pond of Australia, Marek Trela of Poland, and Lone Husted of Denmark, the Al Shaqab stallions have been given the best opportunity to reach their potential. The leasing program has grown into much more than a mutually beneficial transaction. These lessees have shared with us their theories and philosophies, and along the way, they have also become our friends.”

l Adeed is a living legend at Al Shaqab — for us he is the greatest, the best, the cornerstone of our straight Egyptian program. He is healthy and content at Giacomo Capacci Arabians in Italy, spending his days in the pasture and nights in a double size stall. “Bariq Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Wahayeb Al Shaqab [Ansata Selman x Johara Al Shaqab]), a 2011 straight Egyptian grey colt, is our new superstar on the horizon. Bariq is a close relative of Farhoud and we are eager for him to reach breeding age. “Hazmia Al Shaqab is a classic daughter from Al Ghasham Al Shaqab Hooria Al Shaqab Adeed’s second foal crop. Hazmia has a significant family at (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Gazala Al (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Hanouf Al Shaqab with four daughters and three granddaughters Shaqab by Gazal Al Shaqab), Al Shaqab), 2006 grey straight 2010 bay colt Egyptian mare in the breeding program. We are particularly pleased with Hazmia’s 2011 granddaughter, Hajaziat Al Shaqab (Alidaar x Shoala Al Shaqab [Ansata Hejazi x Hazmia Al Shaqab]). Hajaziat is from Alidaar’s last foal crop and she exhibits tremendous potential. The year 2012 brought a new dimension to Hazmia’s career. Under Johanna Ullström’s management Hazmia went from being a valuable broodmare to a successful show mare.”

hat comes to mind when I think of Farhoud? Type, type, type, and more type,” says Mohammed
Al Sulaiti. “He is the most consistent sire of type, especially head type, we have. “Farhoud’s first eight foals were born in 2011 and have, without question, exceeded our highest expectations. One of his first two American-born foals was Layali Al Shaqab (x QR Annah Ferrari), a 2011 bay filly, who was named 2012 U.S. Egyptian Event Champion Filly at her first show. A larger number of offspring were born in 2012 and include the show prospect Ghala Al Shaqab (x Ghalia Al Shaqab by Marwan Al Shaqab), a 2012 bay filly, and two straight Egyptian sons, Thaiar Al Shaqab (x Thiba Al Shaqab by Hadban Al Shaqab), a 2012 bay, and Areeb Al Shaqab (x Sondos Al Shaqab by Ashhal Al Rayyan), a 2012 grey. hen Hadban Al Shaqab arrived at our farm, I was so pleased that he was even better in real life — I had only seen him through photos and videos. I knew he would be a significant part of our long-term breeding plans,” says lessee Dr. Jody Cruz, Rancho Bulakenyo, Los Osos, California. “Our primary goal is to produce daughters of Hadban out of our daughters of El Halimaar, Richter MH, Imperial Al Kamar, and Jabbaar El Halimaar MH. The resulting Hadban daughters can then be bred back into our Maar Hala lines or to other special stallions that will complement our existing program, including the beautiful Farhoud Al Shaqab. While beautiful fillies are our goal, a special colt by Hadban out of a Rancho Bulakenyo mare would be quite welcome! “This year we were very fortunate to have four excellent fillies by Hadban out of very different straight Egyptian mares. He has proven to be a consistent sire of smooth bodies, excellent movement, and correct conformation. His foals all have beautiful faces with big, black eyes and beautifully shaped and well-placed
ears. The fillies are out of daughters of El Halimaar, Richter MH, Raquin RA, and *Orashan. Nearly every week my top choice changes. Maybe we will take them all to the Egyptian Event and let the judges choose! “Hadban’s pedigree is extraordinary. I have been fortunate to have visited Qatar several times and many of my favorite foals have been sired by Ashhal Al Rayyan and also by Al Adeed Al Shaqab. So a stallion sired by Ashhal out of Al Adeed’s dam was a perfect choice for my breeding program. “Hadban Al Shaqab’s showring success has been quite a pleasant bonus. Our focus was breeding, but it soon became apparent that he would be very competitive in the showring when he was named 2012 Egyptian Event unanimous Gold Champion Stallion and the High Scoring Horse of the Show. He then competed at the Region 2 Championship where he was, again, unanimous Champion Stallion. Rancho Bulakenyo and Al Shaqab are particularly proud for him to represent the Egyptian Arabian at the 2012 U.S. National Championships.”

mir is a personal favorite of Mohammed Al Sulaiti’s and with limited breeding and showing he has proven to be highly successful. “I am especially proud of his first foal, Sultan Al Shaqab (x Abha Al Shaqab), a 2011 colt named Gold Champion Yearling at just nine months of age and at his first show, the prestigious 2012 Menton Championship,” he says. “A select group of mares is currently in foal to Amir for this season. Among the most noteworthy are Shahirat Al Shaqab (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Malvina). Shahirat has established an important family, now in its third generation at Al Shaqab. I have high expectations for this foal. Hadeel Al Shaqab (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Enshouda Al Shaqab by Gazal
Al Shaqab) is the remaining member of the Efezja family and has been bred to Amir for her first foal. I have a feeling that this could be a special mating and it is the first time we have bred a descendant of Gazal to Amir. “Mark Wharton, of Peregrine Arabians LLC in Kentucky, has been Amir’s biggest admirer since first encountering him during a visit in 2008. With Al Adeed, Gazal, and Marwan breeding so well over the daughters and granddaughters of Fairview Klassique, and Mark and Quentin Naylor’s unwavering support, I thought it only fair that they be allowed to have him with them. arwan — the name is synonymous with quality; the horse himself inspires respect. “Marwan continues to dazzle us with his siring abilities and a number of promising fillies and colts have emerged,” says Mohammed Al Sulaiti. “The full sisters Fai Al Shaqab and Ajaib Al Shaqab, the first Al Shaqab-bred daughters of 1999 World Champion Victoria II HPS, are highly regarded; Sharifa Al Shaqab (x Shahirat Al Shaqab) is among the eldest daughters of WN Star Of Antigua and with her first foal has produced the stunning Marwan daughter, Manar Al Shaqab. Manar was born late in the season and like her mother’s family I expect she will be slow to mature but she is a star and her time will come. With regard to Marwan sons, Pilar (Fawor x Pipi) has foaled Mowj Al Shaqab, a grey of breathtakingly extreme characteristics. Mowj is a fascinating combination of his sire and dam who has intrigued all who have seen him. We were delighted to procure RHR Vallacontessa (DA Valentino x Amety B, the dam of U.S. National Champion Goddess Of Marwan) and are thrilled with her first colt by Marwan, while the Fairview Klassique daughter Sanctity, a mare handpicked to participate in our breeding exchange program, has delivered Hazm Al Shaqab, a truly noteworthy colt of immense type and quality.”

“M

y first impression of Faraa Al Shaqab was that he was an athletic horse with a great front end and with the potential to sire pretty, upright babies,” says Joaquin de Santibañes of Haras Mayed, Argentina, lessee of Faraa Al Shaqab in 2011 and 2012. “Even after getting off the plane he was the sweetest horse; he has a great mind and superb disposition. “His foals proved to be outstanding, especially considering the limited number of foals he sired in his first breeding season. He proved to be a great cross for various of our Magnum daughters. JJ Argentina is one the most exotic fillies we’ve had at the farm, and we have great trust in her future as a show filly and as a broodmare in Mayed’s pastures. JJ Severiano is a very handsome chestnut colt that shows the best from Faraa and JJ Odessa, an outstanding Magnum daughter. They will both be hitting the show arena very soon. So far, Faraa’s foals show both Arabian type and athletic ability. “Faraa took the Argentine show circuit by storm by
winning Argentina’s two biggest shows, both the traditional Palermo Show and the Argentinean Nationals. Under the capable hand of Haras Mayed’s resident trainer Arthur Nascimento, Faraa was able to show his gifted conformation. His performance in the ring helped create a level of interest that quickly translated to sales of breedings. “Among the various breeders that included Faraa in their programs the ones who supported Faraa through breeding packages were Celeste Caldaroni from Haras CCCC and George Stuart Milne from Haras Malesh, both from Buenos Aires, Argentina. “A limited number of breeders produce as many good males as Al Shaqab through the Gazal-Marwan lines. Be it gender-linked genes or some other explanation, we think the chance of obtaining a breeding sire from this venture is not so far-fetched. Also we are expecting to keep a selection of mares by Faraa. Breeding is a very difficult and complex matter and, while one can hope for the best, it is difficult to elaborate on what is still yet to come.”

s the most successful Al Shaqab-bred son of Marwan in the showring and representing a third successive generation of Al Shaqab-bred World Champion males, Kahil has little more to prove than his siring ability. His selection by Marek Trela and lease to Janow Podlaski for the 2012 and 2013 breeding seasons is a great honor. “Marek has given Kahil a tremendous opportunity, and subsequently Michalow bred a significant number of mares, but it was Kahil’s first Al Shaqab-bred foals that convinced Marek,” explains Mohammed Al Sulaiti. “Those foals are now reaching one year of age. Ghalib Al Shaqab (x Gazala Al Shaqab by Gazal Al Shaqab), a 2011 colt, and Kahlah Al Shaqab (x Aleysha Al Nasser by Gazal Al Shaqab), both exhibit the highest level of potential, while Faten Al Shaqab (x SWF Valencia), 2011 filly, and Zanat Al Shaqab (x ZT Maghan), 2011 filly are also turning heads. The trainers have already made their requests and we look forward to exhibiting these Kahil offspring, and others, in 2013.” “Why Kahil Al Shaqab? Well, why not?” says Director Marek Trela, Janow Podlaski State Stud, Poland, where Kahil is currently on lease. “After all, he’s an excellent horse! As one of the best sons of Marwan Al Shaqab and, what’s even more important to me, the grandson of Gazal Al Shaqab, who contributed so much to Polish breeding. Kahil Al Shaqab represents all the qualities that are so highly valued by Polish breeders. He is extremely handsome, charismatic, full of type, correct, gifted with purposeful, impressive movement, and completely meets our pedigree requirements. Particularly interesting for Janow Podlaski is the distaff side of his pedigree based on the famous stallion Bask, greatly valued by breeders all over the world. All this allows us to look forward to obtaining superb results from using this promising young stallion in Polish breeding, which I hope will be confirmed next year when we will be evaluating his offspring born at Janow Podlaski State Stud.”

Mammona will prove to be a valuable foundation mare — she is a granddaughter of Malvina after all, and she will be bred to an Al Shaqab stallion when she comes of age. “It was not my original intention to lease Nader and we will continue to utilize him. His first foals impressed us and we bred him to a number of our best Gazal and Marwan daughters for this season; Batalah is due again, Gazala will have two Nader foals, while PS Rose Of Marwan and Rahaf Al Shaqab, the full sister of Marwan Al Shaqab, are also due.

“It is an exciting time for Nader. He was well received in Europe and very successful with trainer Frank Spönle. We are pleased that he will have the opportunity to contribute at Husted Arabians in Denmark, a remarkable breeding program of twenty years.” “I was happy and impressed when I saw Nader Al Shaqab for the first time,” says Lone Husted, lessee of Nader Al Shaqab. “He has the attitude to win in the ring, along with big impressive eyes, a short dished head, a strong body, and perfect tail carriage. His movement is impressive and he has a great overall look. His character is sweet and nice, but he still has the explosive gene to show the world who he is. “Nader Al Shaqab’s pedigree contains various bloodlines. In my opinion this often brings the best show horses. From the pretty and exotic dam line, with a lot of Egyptian blood, Nader Al Shaqab has the dry, refined, and pretty look. Through the sire and maybe especially the grandsire Monogramm he has his superb movement and correct and strong body. Both the Spanish and the Polish blood are mixed in a fine way with well-known greats. “Another thing that should be important to any breeder: a perfect, cool stallion, well behaved and easy — that’s how Arabians’ temperament should be!” she says.

“F
adi is the favorite of all who encounter him!” says Mohammed. “He has charm, a sweet and gentle disposition, along with amazing conformation that, as a package, makes him hard to resist. He has
bred many mares, including some owned by the world’s most dedicated breeders such as Athbah Stud, Al Nasser Stud, Al Naif Stud, and Al Zobair Stud. The majority of breeders who produced foals by him in 2012 have rebred for 2013. We now have frozen semen in America and look forward to offering him at stud there. For Al Shaqab, daughters of Gazal, Marwan, and WH Justice are confirmed in foal. The truth is, we love Fadi; he is special to all of us at Al Shaqab. “We also look forward to introducing Fadi’s maternal brother next year, the 2011 bay, Hakeem Al Shaqab (Thee Desperado x Abha Myra by Marwan Al Shaqab). Like Fadi, Hakeem descends from the Ruminaja Ali sire line; he is beautifully conformed and possesses an irresistible quality.”
