stablished as a showring force for a quarter of a century, Shada has not only demonstrated staying power in a demanding field, it has shown remarkable consistency in its ability to bring home top honors, to stand many of the breed’s outstanding stallions, and to market numerous upper echelon horses that go on to show and breeding success. In short, they have been, and remain, in Arabian Horse World parlance “totally tops,” or, as Jeff and Jerry Schall define it, “in the zone.” According to Wikipedia: “Flow is the mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity… Colloquial terms for this or similar mental states include: to be in the zone, in the groove, or keeping your head in the game.” Easily recognized by the trademark bright red drapes and Shada logo, the Shada stalls are also immediately identifiable by the numerous ribbons decorating them at every show the stable attends. The extent to which the Schall brothers and Shada have been in the zone is reflected by this year’s AHW Totally Tops tally. Our Champion Halter Trainer this year is Jeff Schall. This prestigious list of trainers who have done the most winning at

the national level throughout the year is not only led by Jeff this time, he also holds the singular distinction of having made the list more times than any other halter trainer in the breed. Jerry Schall, also, is on the list this year, and is included in the Top Five all-time leading Totally Tops Halter winners. “When I think of the successes we’ve had, especially through the first decade of this new millennium, I compare it to an athlete, a musician, or an artist who is hitting on all cylinders at the same time,” says Jeff. “If they’re in a zone, everything seems to be falling into place at once, it can be true magic. At the two National shows Shada attended in 2009, U.S. and Canadian Nationals, Jeff amassed six National championships, four Reserve National championships, and nine Top Tens. Jerry’s cut of the pie was two National championships, three Reserve National championships, and eight Top Tens. Must have seemed magical indeed. Achievements such as these, however, are not accomplished by one person alone, and in this regard Jeff is quick to acknowledge his wife, Roxanne’s, steadfast support. At every turn you see contributions from family, staff, clients and the horses they show. Dave and Sheila Schall remain a major part of the “Shada

zone.” With such a capable assistant trainer as Austin Miller, the future looks bright as ever. In addition, Shada has recently welcomed a new breeding manager, Jessica Stylski, whose presence is already being felt through her talent, expertise, and attention to detail. In addition to their signature style of showmanship, the Schall brothers are particularly noted for the depth of their stallion lineup. Currently, Shada stands several well-known and proven sires as well as some highly promising up-and-comers. Jeff Schall says, “A common thread amongst legendary stallions is a dynamic expression with an innate sense of purpose. The stallions at Shada seem to know that they are part of this elite group. They are arrogant yet personable, confident yet humble, refined yet full of strength and power. It is rare to find individuals that embody so many of the breed’s standards. They are exceptional in many ways, from top to bottom, front to back.” Arabian Horse World’s cover horse this month is Brixx IA, 2009 Canadian National Champion Futurity Colt, owned by John Hilliard and Christine Bruce of HB Arabians. His dam, Bella Versace (Versace x BD Pennelope by Fonda Bask), was a Regional and class A winner prior to beginning her breeding career, while Brixx’s sire, *Gazal Al Shaqab, is inarguably one of the most successful and respected sires currently in the breed. “We remain exceedingly pleased with Brixx,” says Jerry Schall. “As a three-year-old colt he was wonderful and now he’s become an incredible, mature four-year-old stallion. His strengths include his dry beautiful head, which comes from both Gazal and Versace, as well as

this filly-like throatlatch, which is not typical of a stallion. One look and you say unequivocally he is one of the most beautiful stallions in the world! We are striving to put him in the forefront of the industry because we believe he’s one of the next great breeding stallions.” Jeff agrees, adding, “We’re excited to see Brixx’s first foal crop because we know they’re going to be distinct looking with elegance and beauty.” Brixx’s owner, Christine Bruce, says, “I love the Versace and Gazal looks, and I’m hoping Brixx as a sire will combine those and pass on his beautiful tight ears, which I also love. This horse has so much type and such a great pedigree that you could probably breed in a lot of different directions. We will find out. We bred different kinds of mares to him to see what he’s going to do.

“I’m impressed with the great string of horses that Shada always has. Jeff is one of the top guys out there — he’s been very pleasant and easy to work with, and so has Jerry. As for Brixx’s future, the proof will be in the foals. How he sires is much more important to me than what he does in the showring.” “Bella Versace, the dam of Brixx, is a gorgeous mare out of the beautiful Aristocrat mare BD Pennelope,” says Jeff. “Brixx has a great dam line. With all of the pretty in his pedigree I have no doubt that he will be a wonderful sire.” Shada’s “Red Zone” stallion barn is somewhat like the locker room of a champion athletic team — each member with unique standout qualities and important contributions to make. Also, the owners of the stallions who stand there are staunch supporters of Shada, and quickly and freely offer their testimonials to the Shada standard.

Shada has long had international clients, and among the latest of these is David Ross of Australia, owner of the stunning chestnut 2006 stallion Marwan Al Magnifficoo (*Marwan Al Shaqab x Pacific Echo by Echo Magnifficoo). Marwan Al Magnifficoo’s first foals are echoing their sire’s most positive traits, according to Jeff and Jerry. “The foals are tall, upright, and very fancy, with extreme Arabian type,” they say. Of their work with his stallion, David Ross has this to say: “The Schalls have done a tremendous job of marketing and promoting M&M (as we fondly refer to him). We’ve worked as a team all the way through. My expectations have been fulfilled in every department — Of them as trainers and as a family. I have been showing in America for three years now and could not have asked for any more from Shada or the ever capitivating Marwan Al Magnifficoo.”

Adds Noel Bosse, owner of the 2009 U.S. National Reserve Champion Senior Stallion Art Dekko TT (Audacious PS x HC Amareea by Echo Magnifficoo), “I’ve always been impressed by Shada’s professionalism and warm, welcoming atmosphere. Jeff and Jerry bring out the best in the horses in their care and truly take the time to get to know them. Jeff knows Dekko well — this, along with his tremendous skill and style, is undeniable when he presents Dekko at show.” Fascinated by the rich pedigree of Audacious PS, Noel purchased the mare HC Amareea when she was in foal with Art Dekko — and she couldn’t be happier with her now seven-year-old stallion. “Dekko has exciting and unique qualities to offer to the breed,” she says. “He has a distinct head type with tippy ears, wide-set and knowingly expressive large black eyes, and a dished profile leading to exotically chiseled, well-flared nostrils. He is a vibrant stallion with a strong hip and well-laid-back shoulder, with effortless, fluid movement enhanced by a flagpole tail.” Marjestic WA, a 2005 bay stallion owned by Lisa East, of Brentwood, Tennessee, is by *Marwan Al Shaqab out of Miraga WA by Desert Heat VF. Thus far, Marjestic’s show wins include class A and Regional championships, as well as Scottsdale and U.S. National Top Ten titles. Says Lisa, “We await Marjestic’s 2010 foals with extreme anticipation

and are looking forward to his return to the National spotlight. His pedigree, especially that unique tail female line, certainly hints at the potential of a genetic powerhouse, so we can't wait to see his contribution to the breed. Having said that, my personal expectations of him are simply that he be himself. He has a special and unique spirit that shines on all who know him and that can’t be defined solely by showring or breeding barn success. “I chose Jeff Schall for his intelligence, communication skills, positive energy, and proven ability to train a horse as an individual ... and also because he returns calls promptly! Professionalism is very important to me as a businesswoman and Jeff is professional in every way. Although he is a big-name trainer, he guides and advises, draws a line if needed, yet never patronizes and is always willing to consider my ideas. The entire Shada team is full of the same positive energy — fun-loving, genuinely nice, yet possessing a totally focused get-the-job-done attitude.” Jeff adds, “Marjestic loves to be the center of attention. His effort and willingness is evident in everything he does and touches, always giving 100 percent.” The 2008 Scottsdale Junior Champion Colt AAOTH GH Maryn (NYN Hisani x Enjoue by GH Venture), owned by Edward and Sarah Truitt, of Loomis, California, is one of the up-and-coming stallions who has shown up on the radar as one to watch.

He is a Regional and class A champion, U.S. National Top Ten Yearling Colt, and 2009 Canadian National Top Ten Two-YearOld Colt (Third). “We have had three horses in training with the Schalls,” says Sarah Truitt. “One of our special girls, Penelope Maj in foal to GH Maryn was just sold to Bahrain; we’re very excited about that. We also have a daughter of National Champion First Cyte, Emmelyne, who’s in foal to *GH Maryn and due in April. We absolutely love the Shada barn. “The Shada operation is top-notch,” Sarah continues. “Their professional business ethics wins hands down. We feel that we’re part of their family. They have a no-nonsense approach to training, and they take excellent care of their horses. Ed and I absolutely think the world of all at Shada.” This year two of the stars showcased at Scottsdale were new comer Master Jullyen V (*Jullyen El Jamaal x Misti Morn V) and his maternal grandsire Audacious PS (Fame VF x Hal Flirtatious by *Hal Gazal). Separated by a mere 15 years, they both radiate a peacock presence and Arabian carriage. David and Teresa May became proud new owners of Master Jullyen V just

days before his Scottsdale Championship, while Audacious PS was named Reserve Champion, Stallions Eight and Over, for the second straight year for owner Sheila Varian. Master Jullyen’s owner, Dave May, comments, “When I arrived in Scottsdale this year, Sheila was gracious enough to have us visit Jeff Schall and view Master under Jeff ’s hand. I was simply blown away by his presence and attitude and decided immediately that he was going to have to join his sisters under our ownership. With Master, we own three of the four offspring from *Jullyen El Jamaal out of Misti Morn V.

“My expectations are very simple with regard to owning and showing our horses. We want to enjoy them and enjoy the relationships and partnerships that come from our owning them. We want to share them with others by showing them. We want them to participate in classes and events that make the best use of their talents, but take them off the circuit from time to time so they can be horses.” “Jeff has done a great job with Master and when he brought him out of his stall and into the viewing area at his barn in Scottsdale, we could immediately tell that all was good between

Jeff and Master … and since we’re in it for the well-being of the horse … we’re in it with Jeff!” Duke Mendel, owner of Gemini Ranch, LLC, Plant City, Florida, has been involved in the Arabian horse industry for five years. “The last three years I have campaigned National Champion Odyssey SC with Shada and the Schall family,” he says. “Renae and I really enjoy the family atmosphere they provide. We are very excited about our new three-year-old stallion Drago Z (*Dakar El Jamaal x FOF Kharolina), a full brother to international and U.S. National Champion Dakharo. Jeff will be presenting him in Las Vegas in April! The future is very bright for our entire team!”
