WHILE NUMBERS WERE SOMEWHAT DOWN FROM LAST YEAR, the U.K.’s only international A show still had well over 100 entries and no lack of star quality. Most of the foreign entries were again from the Middle East, with a few from continental Europe, but this year they didn’t quite take all the titles. The show again kicked off with the gelding classes, as usual the best you are likely

to see anywhere, and also as usual all British, since the U.K. is virtually the only ECAHO-affiliated country with a tradition of showing geldings. Marks already shot up into the 90s, with one-year-old spectacular mover, Russian Design by Master Design GA, winning the junior class with 91.0 (including the first 20 of the show, for movement) over the stunning two-year-old Darcy by Om El Mareikh. These same two horses had been champion

and reserve champion junior gelding at the British Nationals earlier in the year, in the same order. Despite this, Russian Design was left out of the titles this time around, with the championship going to the senior winner, seven-year-old Judals Mirage, a son of Brazilian-bred British National Champion Ruger AMW. Not a surprising win, as he had been a very successful stallion previously, only recently gelded and apparently not aware of it. If he had competed in the stallion classes, chances are nobody would have noticed! Reserve went to the second-placed Darcy. The very strong yearling filly class had the first foreign winner in the lovely Alma Al Tiglio, a daughter of Ajman Moniscione bred by the Tiglio Stud in Italy and owned by Giancarlo Buzzi, also of Italy. She is a very typical daughter of her double Padron sire who has inherited his extreme head and she promptly scored two 20s each for type and for head and neck, giving her a grand total of 92.7. Second place went to Nooran Al Khalidiah, a royally bred filly in more than one sense — for one thing, she is owned and bred by HRH Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, and secondly she is a daughter

of the multiple champion mare Robin K. She looks quite a bit like her dam, too. Her sire is Padrons Immage, who was one of the first Padrons Psyche sons in Europe. Third, with still over 90 points, was British entry ROE Layaal, a showy chestnut Marwan Al Shaqab daughter bred and owned by Talal Aggad. In the yearling colts, Britain’s current leading sire Master Design GA made himself felt, with two sons of his sharing the top places, two very similar colts with just 0.2 points difference. The winner in this case was Grand Design, who is out of the Dutch Russian-bred mare Yokosuka F, second going to Masters Image, out of HT Nyasa of Egyptian-Spanish breeding. Despite totally different dams, these two are strongly stamped by their sire. Third, again with over 90, was AJA Hassan by WH Justice, who had beaten both of them at Malvern. Grand Design eventually won the prize for the High-Point British-bred horse at the show. The two-year-old fillies were more international again, the win going to a filly who is proving impossible to beat this year: Belgium’s FM Gloriaa, a drop-dead gorgeous white filly who scored three 20s for type,

and justifiably so. She is a daughter of WH Justice and rather reminiscent of another successful WH Justice daughter, Bess Fa’izah, in fact very similar in type. Her dam is the Psytadel daughter Psity Of Angels. She was bred by Mieke Sans and is now owned by Swatam Arabians. Second place stayed in Britain, though it was won by a U.S.-bred horse, Rohara Cashmere (Sir Fames HBV x Pskyla), a beautiful bay filly who was only 0.3 points behind FM Gloriaa, third place again over 90 points to another U.S.-bred filly, the Marwan Al Shaqab daughter Marabella C, who is now owned by Hedva Almoz in Israel. A rather small, but excellent two-year-old colt class was won by another regular winner, HH Prince Abdullah bin Fahd Al Saud’s Shannan El Madan, bred in Brazil and sired by Shael Dream Desert out of Perla K by CG Balih El Jamaal, beating Bychan Arabians’ straight Egyptian MVA Colour Me Cool (by True Colours out of SKF Tiaara by Imperial Ba’arez) and, still with over 90, another superb Master Design son, Designed. The three-year-old filly class had a most spectacular winner in Layan Al Khalidiah, with three 20s for type and another three for head and neck, not to mention an average of 19 for conformation and the until then high score of the show with 94.1 — that’s Pianissima country, one might say. Layan isn’t exactly a stranger to top honors: she was World Champion Filly in 2007 (the same year her sire, Dakharo, won the stallion title) and Las Vegas Supreme Champion Filly in 2009, and she really is stunning. Not that British entries Baya Victoria FB in second and Pseren in third place aren’t excellent fillies — both still scored over 90 — but there was no getting past Layan. This includes the championships, where she was gold champion, silver going to the two-year-old winner FM Gloriaa and bronze to yearling winner Alma Al Tiglio. What a gorgeous lineup that was — I certainly wouldn’t want to have to choose between them! The class for three-year-old colts was smaller and more of a mixed bag, but again with a spectacular winner in the form of Stival, a very showy Gazal Al Shaqab son from the U.S. who scored 20s for both type and movement. The second-placed horse was no less spectacular, the beautiful grey El Palacio VO, also bred in the U.S., and owned by Al Khalediah Stud. He is the son of two World Champions, Al Lahab and El Dorada, and certainly looks the part. Third place went to Don Giovanni J, another U.S.-bred horse, by MPA Giovanni and with a very extreme head. Stival went on to win the junior male championship, with the silver going to El Palacio and bronze to Shannan El Madan. 4 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b DECEMBER 2009

The four- to six-year-old mare class was nothing if not spectacular, with over 90 points down to seventh place. Al Khalediah Stables swept up both first and second place, the win going to the ethereal white Jamilla Al Zobair, who scored a full set of 20s for type across the board, and another four for head and neck. Bred by Al Zobair Stud in the UAE, she is by the straight Egyptian Ashhal Al Rayyan out of the U.S.bred My Silk Stocking, an Egyptian-related daughter of Thee Desperado. She is certainly almost a perfect model of an Arabian mare, with a perfect head and neck and good conformation as well. In second place, with only 0.3 points less than Jamilla’s high score of 94.3, was Magora, bred in at Blommeröd in Sweden and also owned by Al Khalediah Stables. She, too, is a superb mare, if a very different one, a Gazal Al Shaqab daughter out of a pure Polish dam, and while she only had one 20 in type to Jamilla’s five, she had three of them for movement. Jamilla and Magora went on to take the gold and silver medal in the championships, scoring an unsurprising and fully deserved double win for Al Khalediah. The bronze medal went to the winner of the seven- to ten-year-old mare class, which was one of the smallest in the show. It nevertheless had a superb winner in Shangrilla, bred in Austria by Hans Trummer and owned by Mr. Wainwright in the U.K. Shangrilla is a typey, balanced and wellmoving daughter of the Russian stallion Kais, and of Russian-Polish breeding. She scored just half a point higher than the more spectacular Shifali, one of the best FS Bengali daughters in Britain. The senior mares did not get any titles, despite a highquality class in which all but one participant scored over 90. The winner there was the U.S.-bred Secret Obsession by Padrons Psyche, a showy mare very reminiscent of her sire, now owned by Al Zobair Stud, UAE. She had the identical score to PR Midnite Magic, another American-bred mare and one of the best black mares anywhere, but a slightly higher score for type. The remainder of the class was made up of lovely Russian and Polish mares that would be an asset to any show, with special mention due to the oldest horse in the show: twenty-three-year-old Magdalina, a former champion at Towerlands, brought back out of retirement simply because she enjoys showing. With owner Caroline Reeves, Magdalina serenely floated around the arena to the thunderous applause of her many fans. While the old lady didn’t quite summon up the energy of former years, she still has what it takes to score above 90, and even if she did not win, she, her owner, and her fans clearly enjoyed the occasion. The junior stallion class was one of the most spectacular of the show, and it also brought the much anticipated European debut of Eden C, the very beautiful Enzo son 5 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b DECEMBER 2009

on lease to Athbah Stud in Saudi Arabia. Eden was first in front of the judges and scored an excellent 92.25, and for much of the time this looked like a sure win. However, there was some strong competition yet to come toward the end of the class. Much to everyone’s surprise, the 2008 British National Champion Master Design GA entered the arena not with his usual handler (and owner) Rhodri Jones, but with Frank Spönle, which may just have added that little bit of spark to a performance that might otherwise have been more routine. Master Design, who had already made his statement at this show with two class winners, earned two 20s for type, one for head and neck, and two for movement, and landed a full point ahead of Eden C. And the judges still had some more 20s to hand out, to the final starter, Marquis, Al Khalediah’s very refined chestnut Marwan Al Shaqab son who had done extremely well as a junior and is now competing for his first season as a stallion. He inched past Eden C by a half point, so the class ended with a very spectacular trio of Americanbred stallions at the top of the line. Or rather, quartet, if you count the fourth placed Antarr, a tall and masculine black also sired by Enzo, who is bred and owned by Al Aryam Arabians in Abu Dhabi, but from American parents. As with the mares, the seven- to ten-year-old class was less spectacular, but nevertheless with excellent quality at the top. The winner was the spirited Om El Bahreyn, another American-bred horse and a regular winner as well as a sire of winners. He is not perhaps as “exotic” as some others as far as the head goes, but with excellent conformation and a particularly outstanding neck. Second place went to the typey black AH Kuda, by Polish stallion Pilot out of the American-bred mare Mi Midnite Dancer, narrowly edging out Belgian entry BF Coco Junior by Psytadel, who was still well above 90. For those who maintain show horses don’t make good ridden horses (or vice versa), it should be pointed out that Kuda was National Champion Ridden Stallion earlier this year! Finally, the senior class had some spectacular entries. The reigning British National Champion Burkan was one of them, but he failed to show himself as well as he had at Malvern earlier in the year. The clear winner with a grand score of 93.8 was Sandhiran, who stormed into the ring looking like a million dollars and got two 20s for type and three for movement. He was also bred in the U.S., so all stallion classes were won by American horses, though Sandhiran’s sire Sanadik El Shaklan was actually bred in Germany. Coming second was the Tersk-bred former Derby winner Karat, who looked much better than he had last year and was actually the only other horse in this class to score over 90. The stallion championship then culminated in something that hadn’t happened for a long time — both gold and silver went to the U.K. in the shape of Master Design GA and Sandhiran, respectively, with bronze being awarded to Marquis. This was the most popular championship win in recent years and the cause for massive celebrations. It was also Master Design’s farewell performance, as he is leaving the country to move to Dubai along with his owner, and he is certainly leaving on a high note. The ridden classes were as always an all-British affair, with a rather disappointing turnout in the stallion class, the smallest ever seen at Towerlands. The champion was the same as last year, the gelding winner ZA Karis Ibn Azal, by the Carmargue grandson Zircon Karizmatique out of Azalea of chiefly Egyptian/Spanish breeding. The reserve title went to the British National Supreme Ridden Champion, the 16-year-old Crabbet mare Maiad. 6 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b DECEMBER 2009
