WHILE NUMBERS WERE SOMEWHAT DOWN FROM LAST YEAR, the U.K.’s only international A show still had well over 100 entries and no lack of star quality. Most of the foreign entries were again from the Middle East, with a few from continental Europe, but this year they didn’t quite take all the titles. The show again kicked off with the gelding classes, as usual the best you are likely

to see anywhere, and also as usual all British, since the U.K. is virtually the only ECAHO-affiliated country with a tradition of showing geldings. Marks already shot up into the 90s, with one-year-old spectacular mover, Russian Design by Master Design GA, winning the junior class with 91.0 (including the first 20 of the show, for movement) over the stunning two-year-old Darcy by Om El Mareikh. These same two horses had been champion

and reserve champion junior gelding at the British Nationals earlier in the year, in the same order. Despite this, Russian Design was left out of the titles this time around, with the championship going to the senior winner, seven-year-old Judals Mirage, a son of Brazilian-bred British National Champion Ruger AMW. Not a surprising win, as he had been a very successful stallion previously, only recently gelded and apparently not aware of it. If he had competed in the stallion classes, chances are nobody would have noticed! Reserve went to the second-placed Darcy. The very strong yearling filly class had the first foreign winner in the lovely Alma Al Tiglio, a daughter of Ajman Moniscione bred by the Tiglio Stud in Italy and owned by Giancarlo Buzzi, also of Italy. She is a very typical daughter of her double Padron sire who has inherited his extreme head and she promptly scored two 20s each for type and for head and neck, giving her a grand total of 92.7. Second place went to Nooran Al Khalidiah, a royally bred filly in more than one sense — for one thing, she is owned and bred by HRH Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, and secondly she is a daughter
