Travelling Trabzon Bahrain Confidential correspondent Tulin Meric shares her travel to Trabzon, Turkey!

W

hen you think of Turkey the first things that come to mind are crystal blue waters off the Mediterranean, magic carpets and grand mosques.

However, there is a part of Turkey that is really quite extraordinary. It includes roaring rivers and waterfalls, highland plains and endless shades of green.

coast in the North Eastern region of Turkey, just an hour’s drive away from Batum in neighbouring Georgia. A relatively short internal flight from Istanbul to Trabzon lands you in what can only be described as a nature lover’s paradise.

As a Turk myself with roots from the Balkans I had never travelled beyond the capital, Ankara. So, when I got the opportunity to visit a new city, I was extremely excited.

The air in this region is insanely fresh due to the sheer number of forests and green lands that engulf you from all around. With organic produce always readily available; local specialties for food consist of mainly fish dishes, kofta grills and locally produced cream and honey at almost every meal time. Not forgetting Muhlama. (A gloopy yet tasty sauce made from butter, cheese and flour), often served with locally made cornbread.

along the ancient Silk Road. Heavily influenced by former empires including the Romans, Byzantines and the Ottomans it is immensely rich in culture. Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries can often be seen. One such monastery is the spectacular Sumela Monastery with it’s breathtaking views, it’s embedded high in the mountains of Machka at 1300m above sea level. Quaint little villages lie along the coastal road from Trabzon to Rize showcasing stunning views of tiered tea plantations and endless green mountains in the distance. Multiple enchanting stone bridges with crystal clear waters flowing underneath allow access to some of the most glorious plains of countryside I have ever seen. One in particular, called Cat (pronounced Chat) lay in this romantic and incredibly peaceful setting with a wooden cabin in the distance dominated by the surrounding huge mountains. As I took a photo, there was not a sound to be heard. It was utter bliss. Jaw dropping waterfalls feed the region with their thunderous downpours that trickle into shimmering streams alongside forrest paths. It really is a place like no other. Alpine(esque) highland plateaus scattered all throughout Trabzon are very serene, full of lush green pastures dotted with red roofed wooden houses and cattle

grazing freely has to be one the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. The music of the Black Sea region is also quite unique. Similar to the bagpipes of Scotland, I was lucky to hear someone play the Tulum music on one of the highlands I visited, truly magical. For those that seek a more adventurous trip you can also find an array of sports to participate in from rafting to ziplining, Plus, there are a multitude of hiking trails where you can book guides, and depending on your schedule they can arrange private tours. I urge anyone that goes to Trabzon to also visit at least one tea plantation. Turkish tea is a big deal in Turkish culture, so seeing where it comes from will most certainly make it taste better whilst drinking it.

I can honestly say that Trabzon is a place for people who live for the organic way of life.

Vaping Again! Vaping is in the news again and its all bad for this new industry. The problem with Vaping is that we have absolutely no long term data to determine its safety or the lack of it. All data for Vaping comes in a trickle but after the multiple deaths in the USA we should all take a closer look at what exists. A new study due to be presented to the American Heart Association looked at 476 individuals between the ages of 21 and 45 with no previous heart problems. 94 were non-smokers, 45 e-cigarette users, 52 that used both , and 285 were traditional cigarette smokers. They found that LDL Cholesterol “ bad Cholesterol was higher in e cigarette users compared to non smokers. LDL is the type of Cholesterol that causes plaques in the arteries leading to blockages that may eventually lead to myocardial infarcts. Another separate study looked at heart blood flow using an ultrasound at rest and with an effort, immediately before and after inhaling an e cigarette vs. a traditional cigarette. In traditional cigarettes smokers the blood flow increased after inhalation and then decreased with effort. In e cigarette smokers it decreased with both inhalation and effort. That means that blood flow to the heart was compromised at rest and with effort in vaping. So there was a general reduction in blood flow to the heart muscle with Vaping. These are just two small studies out of many that will be conducted in the future. Till now there is no agreement among the medical community regarding the safety of Vaping. Some authorities have come up with statements advocating Vaping as an alternative to smoking in smokers that are trying to quit. They imply that Vaping is safer than smoking. That does of course not mean that Vaping is safe. It might be safer than smoking but there is a chance that it may not be so. Let us remember that we have over 70 years worth of data and studies concerning cigarette smoking, and that we have less than 10 years of data for e cigarettes. It will be interesting to see the data after another 10 years and then come to an evidence based conclusion- but how many more people will have to die due to Vaping in order prove its dangers! n

Black Badge Bahrain Confidential drives the most exclusive version of the most luxurious SUV in the world. Where? We drove from the Four Seasons Bahrain Bay to Bahrain Fort, and back again. What’s “Black Badge”? It’s Rolls Royce’s ‘special’ badge, designed particularly with the company’s younger customers in mind, that are even more posh, stylish, faster… and they cost more. It’s faster than a normal Rolls Royce? Yes. The engine is a huge 6.7-liter V12 producing 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. This is noticeably more powerful than for non Black Badge models. RollsRoyce doesn't specify the time it takes to go from zero to 100 kph, nor its top speed. But it’s fast. Do they look different? Yes, but subtly so, it has a darkened grille and Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament with a new high-gloss black chrome chemical finish. The alloy wheels are unique to this trim, and a “Technical Fiber” (a type of carbon fiber) trim comes standard. But that’s just the start – there’s lots more differences. Did you enjoy driving it? Of course, it’s like driving a super smooth luxury penthouse on wheels. How much? If you have to ask, you can’t afford one. Oh come on, how much? You better have lots of money. Prices in Bahrain start from around BD 170,000 though you can easily pay up to BD 220,000 with added options. Okay, I want one, who do I call? Euro Motors on +973 1775 0750. Enjoy J

Revolutionizing Cruising Bahrain Confidential interviews Norwegian Cruise Line’s MEA Regional Vice President, Mr. Nick Wilkinson.

N

orwegian Cruise Line is an innovator in global cruise travel for over 52 years. Notably, this cruise line revolutionized cruising by offering guests the freedom and flexibility to design their ideal vacation on their own schedule with no assigned dining and entertainment times and no formal dress codes. Its fleet of 16 contemporary ships sails to nearly 300 desirable destinations, including Great Stirrup Cay, the company's private island in the Bahamas and its resort destination Harvest Caye in Belize. Just recently, we had the chance to interview Mr. Nick Wilkinson, Norwegian Cruise Line’s MEA Regional Vice President.

42 Bahrain Confidential December 2019

We’ve learned that NCL is the pioneer of ‘freestyle cruising’. Can you elaborate on this? Freestyle cruising is very much about the freedom and flexibility to do what you want to do. It allows our guests to create their ideal vacation experience, with no fixed dining times, relaxed attire, several distinct dining options, relaxed disembarkation and other entertainment and activity options. Can you share any exciting innovations that NCL have in the pipeline? What are your recent developments? Bahrain is an important marketplace and we are investing extensively with our partners like 24x7Cruise, wholesalers and travel agents. In another perspective, we’ll be launching six more ships over the next seven years – a dramatic increase in our capacity which will give us more opportunities to offer to our customers, with each one bringing more innovation to the seas.

Freestyle cruising is very much about the freedom and flexibility to do what you want to do. What would you describe as Norwegian Cruise Line’s ethos? What makes it special? We have a really clear DNA – we want to create freedom of flexibility. I’d like to describe our ships as a ‘floating resort’ because of the range of superior services we provide. This includes a wide variety of entertainment and dining options as well as a range of comfortable accommodations. At Norwegian Cruise Line, you can find all the amenities available in a land-based resort, if not more. We have the right itineraries, floating resorts and facilities for every sector.

Are there any emerging destinations NCL considers particularly exciting? We’re always looking at the backbone of what drives the market here. For 2020, we’re really pleased with the introduction of new paths and more exciting cruises. Norwegian Getaway is offering departures from Rome while Norwegian Spirit is doing itineraries in the Far East and Japan. Where are the most popular destinations? For Bahrain, the most popular is the Mediterranean. Next, is the Baltic followed by Asia and the Caribbean. On a personal note, is there a destination you’ve always wanted to go but still haven’t? If you asked me 12 months ago, I would have said Africa and South Africa. Norwegian Cruise Line is doing it for the first time in February/March 2020. n

Elevating Experiences Bahrain Confidential interviews Mr. Patrick Zheng, Chairman of Chinamex, Dragon City's operating company. 44 Bahrain Confidential December 2019

L

ocated southwest of Diyar Al Muharraq, Dragon City is a first of its kind project on the island. The property includes Dragon Mall, Dragon Apartments, the Thai Mart, Dragon Plaza and an allocated area for warehouses. Just recently, we had the chance to talk to Mr. Patrick Zheng, Chairman of Chinamex, Dragon City's operating company about what’s new and what’s next. Can you shed light on your vision for Dragon City Bahrain? As part of the “Belt and Road Initiative”, our goal was, is and always will be to strengthen and contribute to the economic and cultural development between China and Bahrain. Apart from being perceived as an illustration of a successful Chinese investment, we would also like Dragon City Bahrain to be the example of cultural diversity in the Kingdom. Furthermore, we aim to be a tourist attraction for the neighbouring countries. What have been the challenges you have faced over the course of the year? It has been a tremendous experience for us at Dragon City to be in the Kingdom of Bahrain. There were a few challenges in the beginning of our journey, but thanks to the government in the country and their keenness to make each business an enormous success, we have been able to tackle almost all, if not all, of them, notably the infrastructure around Diyar Al Muharraq as people initially found coming to us hard and time-consuming. The huge amount of our footfall is a testament to how people are now finding it very easy to visit the mall and enjoy exceptional shopping experience. Our story wouldn't have been colourful without the support of the wise leadership of the Kingdom of Bahrain as well as the management

of Diyar Al Muharraq and we have been keen to reciprocate by tirelessly contributing to the development of Bahrain's economy and attracting more visitors to Diyar. In contrast, what have been Dragon City’s major successes in 2019? Dragon City Bahrain has achieved 99.9% leasing rate. On top of this, our footfall reached almost 1million in August. The total footfall in 2019 is expected to exceed 9 million. What is your action plan for the upcoming year? Our successes do not stop us from further elevating the shopping experience at Dragon City Bahrain. This will be achieved through the following: improving the products’ variety and cost-effectiveness, leading the market trend through showcasing more innovative products, guiding the tenants to establish reputable brands and raise awareness. Moreover, we want to continue emerging with the local community while also giving back to them. What should people look forward to at Dragon City Bahrain? A more convenient, accessible and immersive shopping method will soon be revolutionising Dragon City Bahrain. Personally, what motivates you as a leader? I take great pleasure in witnessing our tenants (as we call “Dragoners”) settling the roots in Bahrain. On the other note, providing more choices on cost effective lifestyles for the people of this region is where I draw my passion and enthusiasm from. n @DragonCityBahrain

A CUT Above Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with, celebrity chef and restaurateur, Wolfgang Puck the mind behind CUT and re/ Asian Cuisine at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.

Chef Wolfgang Puck

46 Bahrain Confidential December 2019

Feature

T

he name Wolfgang Puck is synonymous with the best of restaurant hospitality and the ultimate in all aspects of the culinary arts. He was a superstar chef before the term superstar chef even existed. With the rise of social media, just about any chef who has been viral calls themselves “celebrity chef”. However, the Austrian-born chef, with his worldfamous chains and restaurants all over the world is a true titan of the industry. Just recently, he visited the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay and we took the opportunity to ask him a few questions about what’s new, what’s next and what makes him the best!

There will be an evolution, we don’t want to stand still. We first met Chef Wolfgang Puck at The CUT Lounge, where he warmly greeted us with his charming personality and colorful stories about his restaurants, travels, family and work life. We’ve learned that the celebrity chef started his life far away from any celebrities, in a small Austrian town called Sankt Veit an der Glan; where her mother was a chef. Chef Wolfgang began cooking as a child, at his mother’s side. With her encouragement, he started his formal training at 14 years of age. As a young chef, Chef Wolgang worked in some of France’s greatest restaurants, including Maxim’s in Paris, the Hotel de Paris in Monaco, and the Michelin 3-starred L’Oustau de Baumanière in Provence. At the age of 24, he took the advice of a friend and left Europe for the United States. The rest, as they say, was history.

Chef Wolfgang Puck is well-versed in travelling – when we caught up with him, he had just been to Los Angeles, Tampa, Spain, New York and Riyadh. “Tomorrow, I’ll be in Istanbul”, he adds. Nevertheless, Bahrain remains to be his favorite out of all the places he had been to in the Middle East. “CUT is our version of a modern steakhouse”, Chef Wolfgang explains when asked about his vision for the acclaimed restaurant. The sleek and modern American steak restaurant delivers innovation at every level through its unique culinary, service and design combination. However, he envisions more development for the restaurant: “There will be an evolution, we don’t want to stand still”. “Food is such a big part of celebration”, Chef Wolfgang says. In line with this, a collection of distinctive dining and festive specials have been specially crafted by Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s culinary team in celebration of the year-end festivities. We asked Chef Wolfgang if he enjoys cooking outside of his profession. He answers, “I love to cook at home and for my family all the time”. Speaking of food, we’ve learned that the celebrity chef has a strong dislike for peanut butter! Despite owning 28 fine dining establishments worldwide, building a brand, publishing a number of books and having countless television appearances, Puck is not yet ready to rest on the laurels of his 50year career… and we’re ready to witness what is yet to come. n

PS: Chef Wolfgang advises cooking enthusiasts to “buy the best ingredients and try not to f*** it up”! @chefwolfgangpuck @cutbahrain @reasiancuisine

Bahrain Confidential interviews the mind behind Prept Bahrain, Mr. Qasim Al Setri.

Performance Driven

I

nstead of thinking, shopping, prepping, and cooking your own “healthy” meals (not to mention all that cleaning up you have to do after), you can just opt to have expertly prepared, calorie-counted, and restaurant-quality dishes delivered straight to your doorstep! Does this sound too good to be true?

What inspired you to open Prept? There was a lack in the market for proper macro based meals, that is catered to high performance individuals and athletes. Most healthy or meal prep restaurants serve low amounts of calories and protein per meal, for a high price. We wanted to offer high protein meals at a reasonable price.

Prept Bahrain is a performance meal provider designed by athletes. What started out as a personal meal plan turned out to be a successful venture for Mr. Qasim Al Setri, whose experiences prompted him to create his version of expertly prepared meals. Just recently, we had the chance to interview him.

There is an abundance of healthy restaurants in Bahrain, what makes Prept stand out? Definitely the amount of protein per meal that comes with a reasonable price. Prept offers a meal plan for every performance goal and are available in any macros to meet everyone’s athletic needs.

Tell us more about Prept Bahrain, how did it come about? The inception of Prept was during the time I came back from the United States. Having worked as a healthy food cook in the US, I ignited my interest in this field. To add to that, I am also competing as a bodybuilder which entails cooking my own food. When I came back to Bahrain, I found out that my cousin owns a centralized kitchen, so I asked if I can prep my meals there since I consume up to 6 meals (and up to 2kg of chicken) a day! This also meant that I needed a lot of space and a big enough grill to cook on. Soon enough, friends and family began asking for healthy meals. They loved our chicken and boom… Prept came to life!

If you could persuade people to change three things about their diet, what would they be? First, eat more healthy food than more supplements. Second, eat to perform. Lastly, indulge in wholesome performance based meals that will boost both the mind and body Are there any specific promotions that you want to share? We just launched breakfast on all our food platforms! We’re offering a 5% discount to anyone who sends us a picture of our article. n +973 6670 6010 @preptbh

This festive season, HV is giving you tips on how to maintain your current fitness this month.

T

he festive holiday period is typically busy and indulgent for most. In short, health and fitness is typically not found on the top of the priority list, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Is your fitness on the backseat at the end of this year? Top tips to avoid the festive slump:

Calorie saving ideas It’s always a challenge for a normal calorie intake, so be sure to: Be conscious of portion size and excessive snacking. With long days out, have healthy snacks prepared to avoid hunger, and being pulled to higher calorie foods and treats.

Maintain your fitness focus by time efficient exercise strategies. The benefit of time saving strategies without affecting the quality of your training: Keep it short and effective, by making sure you have a session planned beforehand to target your specific needs. Pre-book committed sessions with your trainer, to keep you on top of your fitness journey.

Exercise with friends Having friends to train with can be an extra motivation during this time. Make it fun by doing different activities to stay fit and healthy. Make the most of the cooler weather and go play tennis with friends, or go horse riding, try something different! n

Maintain a routine Plan and execute your exercise sessions. A little exercise is better than nothing, so keep moving by going for a walk or jog, even before you go out for your celebrations. Except your workouts may vary, but make a point not to miss them. Quality versus quantity!

If you can’t get enough of the Japanese favorite, Monsoon has just the thing for you – platters! The restaurant’s sushi and sashimi platter is all about understated elegance that showcases the rich flavors without overcrowding the palate. It offers guest customized variants that can include Sake (salmon), Maguro (tuna), Ebi (prawn), Hamachi (yellowtail), among others. Aside from the vibrant platter, we thoroughly enjoyed modern fusions like the ‘Spider Maki’ and ‘Blow Torch Maki’. The InterContinental Regency Bahrain is excited to welcome Kyrylo in the lead of the eminent transformation of our Downtown Bar. Besides his aim to produce a brand new food and beverage offering in this well-established venue, his mantra “People come to people”, will provide the competitive edge in the Bahraini market. His dream is to create a “Speak Easy” venue in a lounge style set-up, where likeminded people from all walks of life, will come together and have a great time in a classy setting. Together with the local market, as well as our international guests, we are excited to see what this young, vibrant and energetic professional will serve up in the near future. n

Director of Public Relations and Communications at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay

A short talk with interesting people living in Bahrain!

Nationality: British/Thai

Personality Profile How are you finding Bahrain? Breathtaking. Having just relocated here and seeing everything with fresh eyes brings a sense of wonder and awe. From the picturesque palm tree plantations in Janabiya to the jewel coloured reefs surrounding the islands to the arid desert landscape that changes colour during the sunset - there's beauty in every corner of Bahrain. What’s your favourite place in Bahrain and why? I might be biased here but this private island I come to work to each day is quite spectacular! What do you most like, and dislike, about your work? In PR and Marketing Communications there are infinite possibilities - it's a matter of staying open minded, embracing continuous change and remaining creative. This is the advantage and downfall at the same time as you must always continuously adapt in order to keep ahead.

98 Bahrain Confidential December 2019

Biggest lesson in life: Celebrate your mistakes but be sure not to make the same one twice. If you can change anything in your life, what would it be? I live without regrets. What makes you happy? Hiking in the mountains. And food! I love all types of cuisines. Who are you listening to at the moment? Christian LĂśffler and Lane 8 Favorite motto or saying: "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace." - Jimi Hendrix n
