Personally speaking, what are some of your favourite Ramadan traditions?

One of the dishes that holds significant symbolism and is often associated with Ramadan is "Harees" or "Harissa."

Allocating time for family members, and coming together as a family to break the fast (Iftar) is a cherished tradition. Gathering around the table, offering prayers together, and sharing a meal strengthens familial bonds and creates a sense of togetherness. Many families make it a tradition to attend prayers at the mosque together. Praying side by side and listening to the beautiful recitation of the Quran fosters a sense of spirituality and unity. Participating in community iftars with extended family, friends, and neighbours is a tradition that fosters a sense of community and social connection. Coming together to break the fast and share meals strengthens bonds beyond the immediate family. These traditions centered around prayers and family gatherings during Ramadan create a nurturing and spiritually fulfilling environment, fostering unity, and deepening the connection with loved ones and faith.

What is the one dish/dessert that symbolizes Ramadan for you and why?

One of the dishes that holds significant symbolism and is often associated with Ramadan is "Harees" or "Harissa." Harees is a traditional Middle Eastern and South Asian dish made from a mixture of meat (usually chicken or lamb) and wheat or barley. It is slowcooked until the grains and meat blend together into a porridge-like consistency. Harees is deeply rooted in Ramadan traditions because it has historical and cultural significance. n

Green Ramadan

Hilton Bahrain joins a global initiative to reduce food waste

Hilton Bahrain announced its participation in Hilton's Green Ramadan initiative, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) West Asia, Winnow, and Goumbook. The upscale hotel in Juffair, Bahrain is taking steps to minimize food waste during the month of Ramadan while promoting the significance of local sourcing and responsible consumption.

Research conducted by UNEP West Asia has revealed a significant increase in food waste during religious and social festivities, including Ramadan. Acknowledging the challenge, Hilton Bahrain is joining Hilton properties across the world, implementing proactive measures to address food waste and reduce its environmental impact during the auspicious month. The efforts further line up with Hilton's Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals, which include a target to reduce food waste sent to landfills by 50 per cent.

Hilton Bahrain has adopted the Winnow system to accurately measure and monitor food waste. The data will facilitate the identification of areas for improvement and enable the hotel to implement effective strategies to reduce waste. By closely monitoring food wastage, Hilton Bahrain aims to make informed decisions that contribute to a more sustainable and efficient food management system.

Hilton Bahrain has partnered with Bahrain Food Bank and a composting company to ensure surplus food is redistributed to those in need, preventing edible food from going to waste. The collaboration with the composting company helps transform unavoidable food waste into nutrient-rich compost, which will be used to support local agriculture. The initiatives further promote sustainability within the community.

Tamer Farouk, General Manager of Hilton Bahrain, expressed his enthusiasm for the Green Ramadan initiative, stating, "We are proud to be part of Hilton's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. By actively reducing food waste and promoting responsible practices during Ramadan, we aim to inspire our guests and the wider community to adopt more sustainable habits. Through partnerships and collaborations, we are paving the way for a greener future.”

Beyond addressing food waste, Hilton Bahrain is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint during Ramadan. Promoting responsible consumption, the hotel is partnering with local farmers and fishermen to incorporate locally sourced ingredients into its Iftar and Ghabga buffets. This approach not only supports the local economy but also reduces the environmental impact associated with long-distance transportation.

The Arabian Nights-themed Ramadan returns to Hilton Bahrain this year. Set in the heart of Juffair, the hotel is inviting guests to explore an array of regional and international delights, alongside Ramadan favourites with live entertainment in a captivating ambience. n

Enriching Relationships

Strengthening the bonds of family and friendship during Ramadan

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, it's not only a time for spiritual reflection and fasting but also an opportune moment to strengthen bonds with loved ones. Ramadan provides a unique setting to enhance connections, deepen understanding, and foster a sense of unity within families and communities.

Here are five ways to enrich your relationships during this sacred time:

Shared Meals and Family Gatherings

One of the most cherished aspects of Ramadan is the breaking of fast, or iftar, each evening. Use this time to gather with family and friends, sharing in the joy of food and fellowship. Whether it's preparing traditional dishes together or organizing potluck dinners, the act of sharing meals can foster closeness and create lasting memories. Embrace the spirit of hospitality by inviting neighbours and acquaintances to join, promoting unity and solidarity within your community.

Feature 32 Bahrain Confidential March 2024

Bonding Through Acts of Service

Ramadan encourages acts of charity and kindness towards others, providing an opportunity to strengthen relationships through service. Consider volunteering at mosques, shelters, or community centres with family members or friends. Engaging in charitable endeavours together not only benefits those in need but also cultivates a sense of empathy and teamwork within your social circle. Whether it's distributing

but also towards oneself, fostering a sense of inner peace and harmony. By embracing the values of compassion and reconciliation, we can cultivate healthier, more fulfilling relationships with those around us.

Create Meaningful Rituals

Establishing rituals and traditions specific to Ramadan can strengthen the bond between family members. Whether it's sharing stories of past Ramadan experiences or going for a post-Iftar walk

meals to the less fortunate or participating in donation drives, these shared experiences can deepen bonds and instil a sense of purpose.

Ramadan encourages acts of charity and kindness towards others, providing an opportunity to strengthen relationships through service.

Prioritize Quality Time

During busy schedules and obligations, make a conscious effort to prioritize quality time with loved ones during Ramadan. Set aside distractions such as electronic devices and dedicate focused attention to meaningful conversations and shared activities.

Foster Forgiveness and Reconciliation

Ramadan is a time for self-reflection and spiritual growth, offering an opportunity for individuals to seek forgiveness and reconcile strained relationships. Take this opportunity to mend fences, extend apologies, and let go of grudges. Practice forgiveness not only towards others

as a family, these rituals create a sense of continuity and togetherness. Be creative and involve everyone in the process of designing these rituals, ensuring they hold personal significance for each member of the family.

As we embark on the journey of Ramadan, let us seize the opportunity to strengthen relationships and nurture bonds of love, compassion, and understanding. Through shared meals, acts of service, quality time, forgiveness, and inclusivity, we can cultivate deeper connections with our families, friends, and communities, fostering a sense of togetherness that extends beyond the holy month. May this Ramadan be a time of renewal, growth, and unity for all. n

Creating Vibrant Ramadan Spaces at Home

For many, Ramadan is an experience - a journey marked by traditions, rituals, and gatherings that bring families and communities together. One significant aspect of preparing for Ramadan is setting up spaces within our homes that evoke the essence of this sacred time. From the warmth of flickering lanterns to the aroma of freshly cooked delicacies, every element contributes to creating an ambience that enhances our spiritual connection and fosters a sense of tranquillity.

D.Haus redefines luxury while making it affordable to all. In this article, the experts of this Bahrain-based furniture brand explore how thoughtful designs and interior arrangements can transform ordinary spaces into sanctuaries of serenity during the month of Ramadan.

Books and knick-knacks are the soulful accents that breathe life into home decor, offering more than mere ornamentation. They serve as gateways to imagination and memories, transforming shelves and tabletops into curated expressions of personal identity. Books, with their boundless knowledge and storytelling, stand as both intellectual treasures and aesthetic delights, while eclectic knick-knacks like paperweights and trinket dishes add whimsy and intrigue to every nook and cranny. These carefully curated pieces not only enhance visual appeal but also create a sense of warmth and authenticity, inviting guests to explore and engage with the stories and passions that define the space. In essence, they are the heartbeats of a well-loved home, resonating with personal narratives and cherished moments.

Feature 34 Bahrain Confidential March 2024

Table-top elements such as vases and display pieces should play off each other as well as the surface, taking both to a cohesive height that alone they don’t normally achieve. Matching patterns and finishes should be an intentional effort, to elevate the look, drawing the eye to individual elements while not losing sight of the overall view. Attention to scale is vital; larger pieces anchor the arrangement while smaller ones add depth and interest. By orchestrating these details with finesse, every corner of the room becomes a delightful composition, inviting both admiration and relaxation.

In the realm of home decor, achieving a cohesive and inviting space requires a delicate balance of matching elements and thoughtful embellishments. The foundation lies in harmonizing furniture, textiles, and accents, as showcased. Yet, it's the subtle details like fresh blooms and plush rugs that breathe life into a room, infusing it with personality and warmth. Selecting colours that complement each other fosters visual continuity and amplifies aesthetic appeal. Whether it's a pop of vibrant hues or a serene palette, every choice should enhance the overall ambience. Ultimately, it's the synergy of these elements that transforms a house into a beloved home.

Flowers are integral to interior design, offering aesthetic appeal, a natural touch, and focal points within spaces. Their colours, textures, and fragrances contribute to ambience and sensory experiences, softening environments and creating visual interest. By rotating seasonal blooms, interiors remain dynamic and fresh. Additionally, flowers allow for personalization, reflecting individual tastes and moods. They serve not only as decorative elements but also potentially enhance well-being, as studies suggest their presence indoors can positively impact mood and reduce stress. Overall, flowers enrich interior spaces by adding beauty, connecting with nature, and fostering a sense of comfort and personal style.

Ramadan Reflections

The month of Ramadan brings with it myriad traditions, a sense of togetherness and spirituality, as well as positive mindsets as one prepares oneself for a month-long journey of fasting. We spoke to some individuals around Bahrain to find out what Ramadan means to them and how they keep up with the demands of their work lives while observing the traditions of Ramadan.

What are some of your favourite Ramadan traditions?

Ramadan holds a special place in my heart because of the spirit of giving and the serene atmosphere it brings. As a practising Muslim, fasting during this holy month carries deep significance for me. It instils a sense of meditation and tranquillity. And of course, Iftar and Ghabga are moments we all eagerly anticipate. The togetherness they foster, combined with delicious food, creates cherished memories.

The act of giving back to the community is one of the beautiful aspects that Ramadan brings. It's a season of sharing and caring for the community we belong to, and I am passionate about this. Every year, my team and I organize a series of events and collaborate with non-profit organizations such as the Bahrain Down Syndrome Society and Tree of Life Society. One of our renowned initiatives is "Ramadan On The Way," where we visit local neighbourhoods and distribute goodies to our neighbours, spreading joy and kindness.

Iftar and Ghabga are undoubtedly moments we eagerly anticipate. The togetherness they foster, combined with delectable food, is truly special. At Hilton Bahrain, our dedication is to provide an exceptional experience for our guests during every Iftar and Ghabga. This year, we are thrilled to continue our Arabian Nights theme, showcasing the enchanting tales of Sheherazade. Our hotel will be adorned with elements from these famous stories, transporting you to the magical world of Arabian Nights.

How do you stay motivated and energised while fasting, particularly on long days?

To stay motivated and energized during fasting, I prioritize keeping my spirits high and focusing on the multitude of blessings that Ramadan brings. It is a time when our commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) activities and

Feature 44 Bahrain Confidential March 2024
Tamer Farouk General Manager, Hilton Bahrain

collaborations takes centre stage, allowing us to create a positive and long-lasting impact on our community and environment.

By immersing myself in the spirit of Ramadan, I find renewed motivation and energy. The act of fasting itself becomes a source of inspiration, reminding me of the strength and discipline within. Moreover, the emphasis on ESG activities during this season fuels my enthusiasm. Through these endeavours, I find a sense of purpose and fulfilment, which in turn keeps me motivated and energized throughout the fasting period, even on the longest of days.

Water or Dates?

Water!

How does the sense of community during Ramadan compare to the rest of the year?

The sense of community during Ramadan is undeniably stronger and more pronounced. While Hilton Bahrain is a dedicated supporter of Hilton's Travel with Purpose initiative, which emphasizes community involvement and making a positive impact throughout the year, the spirit of giving that Ramadan brings truly unites people and inspires collective action.

During this blessed month, individuals come together with a shared sense of purpose, working hand in hand to create a positive impact within our communities. The spirit of generosity and compassion permeates every interaction, fostering a deep sense of connection and togetherness.

Through acts of donation, collaborations with different organizations, and raising awareness on important social issues, the community becomes a powerful force for change during Ramadan. There is a heightened awareness of the needs and challenges faced by others, and a collective effort is made to uplift and support one another.

Also this year, I am happy to share that Hilton Bahrain is going to be part of Hilton's Green Ramadan project that focuses on reducing food wastage and improving local sourcing. We are committed to making a difference by promoting sustainable practices and utilizing locally sourced ingredients. By supporting local farmers and businesses, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also contribute to the growth of the local community.

Additionally, when I am at work, I pause and appreciate the breathtaking view from our Executive Lounge. The sight of the serene surroundings and the stunning view provides a sense of calm and serenity, creating a peaceful atmosphere amidst the busyness of the day. n

What are some of your favourite Ramadan traditions?

I love how the whole community slows down. I love how we get to spend more family time because everyone who works gets to go home early before iftar so we all have our first meal together as a family. Which isn’t really possible when it isn’t Ramadan.

How do you stay motivated and energised while fasting, particularly on long days?

Try to stay hydrated during the evenings and avoid salty foods in the evenings so you don’t feel thirsty during the day. Take naps if you can to reenergize you before iftar.

Water or Dates?

Water and dates are the best way to break your fast; there are so many nutrients and minerals in a single date!

How does the sense of community during Ramadan compare to the rest of the year?

It’s a holy month. I believe people are more charitable, more patient, and more connected to God. It’s a time to reflect on yourself as a person and on what religion means to you. Mindfulness During Ramadan

Keeping the little ones engaged throughout the month.

The Holy month of Ramadan is a perfect time for reflection and goal setting and while kids may or may not be observing the month fasting, everything seems to slow down just a little bit, and there is more time to work on certain mindful activities. While energy levels may plummet, there are plenty of lowkey activities to keep the kids positively engaged with or without adult guidance, all the while taking care of their energy reserves.

Read on to find some examples of engaging activities for the kids during the month of Ramadan:

Gratitude Diary - Kids really enjoy writing and drawing among other crafts

Feature 50 Bahrain Confidential March 2024

and they may want to keep a daily journal where they can write at least one thing/ person they are grateful for and why. The younger kids may draw and color to express their gratitude. At the end of Ramadan, caregivers can go through and discuss the diary with their children and maybe add on some of their own thankful thoughts.

Written and contributed by Sarah Almawy, a certified Life Coach and founder of Conscious Coaching which specializes in tweens, teens and their caregivers.

Care Packages - Kids may like to put together care packages for individuals they feel deserve/are in need of staple items whether sanitary or food. They can enclose a drawing or simple notes of well wishes. The adult may help deliver these packages along with the child in order for them to actually see that others appreciate the little things in life and they were a part of helping someone else feel loved. This venture helps set the stage for future humble endeavors while cementing emotional and self awareness.

Meditation/Prayer - This is an important practice to help kids relax and recalibrate their big emotions and mental fluidity. Whether they practice with an adult to guide them or quietly on their own, it will aid in further gratitude and self reflection while decompressing from daily chaos and noise.

Colouring - A long-loved activity that can be done alone or in a group, coloring Mandelas or Ramadan pictures is sure to relax and destress the kiddos especially if accompanied by relaxing sounds of the waves or birds. This activity can be done in the kitchen in the company of a caregiver to discuss the picture being colored or simply to engage in thought-provoking conversations.

Dinner Preps - Kids are always keen to show their caregivers their helpful characteristics and love to take on age appropriate responsibilities, so why not afford them this reward and ask them to help prepare dinner. Setting the table with handmade name cards, squeezing some lemons for dressings or stews, mixing a salad, adding chocolate chips to a dessert or simply asking cooking questions as a form of conversation with an adult are some simple and self satisfactory jobs that the littles can help with while learning certain useful techniques along the way.

Make sure that you use the time during the holy month to slow down and unwind from the daily routine of the hustle and bustle and engage the kids in meaningful and positive activities. The simpler the better for you both, and what memories you will make. n

Getting To Know Hawar Resort by Mantis

Starting September this year, the Hawar Resort by Mantis will welcome guests to a unique island experience. Merging luxury with ecotourism, while redefining adventure, the Accor property will be a one-of-a-kind addition to the luxury hospitality scene in Bahrain. After working in 14 countries, André Erasmus has made Bahrain his latest home - setting up the new resort ahead of its muchanticipated opening later this year. In this exclusive interview, the General Manager of Hawar Resort by Mantis gives us a sneak peek into the experiences - both dining and adventure - that guests can expect at the new resort.

What, in your opinion, makes Hawar Resort by Mantis stand out as a project in Bahrain?

We’re not just another hotel or resort. The activities and services we offer on this beautiful island that’s teeming with wildlife, culture, and a kind of rugged beauty, will collectively provide

an experience our guests have never had before. Mantis, the brand was established in South Africa in 2000 by the Gardiner family and later acquired by the French luxury hotel operator, Accor. We focus on ecotourism and sustainability, delivering exceptional guest experiences in luxurious settings, and we’re bringing this to Bahrain through Hawar Resort by Mantis.

Tell us a little about yourself and your journey in the hospitality industry.

Well, I’ve been in the show my entire life. I’m a hotelier with an extremely exciting career, working in 14 different countries for big corporate hotels. However, being close to nature has always been a passion. Before arriving in Bahrain, I worked for some time in Vietnam, Thailand, and China. I worked with the Anantara brand and opened the Anantara Desert Islands Resort and Spa on Sir Baniyas Island (Abu Dhabi); a project that’s similar to what we’re trying to achieve here on Hawar Island.

How will you measure success in terms of guest experiences and environmental impact as the general manager of this property? Our aim with this resort is to try and achieve something different. We want to showcase the beauty of Bahrain, its people, its nature, and its culture. Success, for us, is when people, especially the younger generation visit us to switch off from the digital world and connect with nature, reconnect with their families and themselves. I believe, that in modern society, we seem to have lost sight of the important things in life. I’m confident that at Hawar Island, guests can rediscover what life is really about.

What dining experiences have you curated at the Resort?

We're very excited that we'll be starting this project with a Michelin Star couple. We will be setting up a pop-up restaurant and a couple of more restaurants featuring a variety of cuisines along with all-day dining and a pool bar.

Guests can enjoy dining outside the gate, similar to a South African or East African experience, following a Safari. We have some exciting dining concepts and experiences planned, something that’s way out of the ordinary for guests in Bahrain.

Guests can enjoy dining outside the gate, similar to a South African or East African experience, following a Safari.

What adventure offerings can guests enjoy at Hawar Islands?

This is one of our unique selling points. We’re fortunate to have partnered with Bear Grylls (TV presenter, survival expert, and former SAS Trooper) to open the Bear Grylls Survival Academy, where he would be carrying out activities designed by him. The Adventure Center will be custom-built for guests to engage in team-building activities for all ages. Furthermore, Bear will facilitate programmes for corporate teams, and families, so all our guests can enjoy curated activities and have fun getting their feet in the water, on the sand, and really experience nature; of course, under the watch of Bear and his team.

What would the commute to the resort from the mainland look like for guests?

Reaching the island is a highly accessible process. The first point is a welcome pavilion at Durrat (Durrat Al Bahrain), the southernmost tip of the main island where guests can securely park their vehicles.

We will be confirming more ports in time. 25-minute-long boat trips will ferry guests to Hawar. Guests will be welcomed aboard to some surprises along with food and beverages. The adventure begins as soon as you step out of your car.

Given that most of the luxury offerings in Bahrain are located within city limits, is there anything guests should be aware of or prepared for before visiting the resort?

All I would say is prepare to have fun, open your mind, and rediscover what beautiful Bahrain has to offer. n

The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi, Istanbul

I’d never been to Istanbul before, though, for my birthday weekend, I had the chance to spend a long weekend of 4 nights in this captivating city. A quick trip that will take around 4 hours via a direct flight from Bahrain, makes for a very easy getaway for a long weekend.

Despite a short flight, my mid-January trip to Istanbul was far colder than the weather I’d departed in Bahrain, a delightful change of pace. I made the most of the cold frosty mornings with a long walk exploring the winding streets and roads of Nisantasi. I was surprised at just how large Istanbul is as a city, if you visit for a long weekend, or even a week, good luck thinking you’ll get to see most of the city during that time. I was lucky to have a few friends who knew the city well and gave me recommendations on places to go, areas to explore, places to shop and restaurants to check out. Istanbul has a vibe unlike anything else with old bazaars tucked between modern business districts.

I was a guest of the newest boutique hotel from “The Stay” brand of hotels in Turkey, the location on Nisantasi Boulevard. My stay at The Stay (haha) was such a pleasure that my only disappointment was the end of the trip and having to check out and head back home. It is a beautiful, boutique and homely hotel that offered exceptional service from the moment I arrived with the kind doormen helping me with my bags and opening the big entrance hotel doors.

The Stay Brand

The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi does dining so well, that I was inclined to enjoy their Italian restaurant, Marcello.

The Stay brand puts a major emphasis on art intertwining with life, hence the reason it curates collections of masters and young Turkish artists alike. All of the properties under this collection are unique in their own way. Nisantasi Boulevard is purely exquisite, a landmark on this lit-up slice of the boulevard. The other properties including the Bebek, Ortakoy, and Alacati all shine with modern and stylish designs that pay homage to the history and heritage of their surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Stay Hotels also has another distinction beyond its design and seamless incorporation into the local landscape. It became the first carbonneutral independent hotel group in Turkey in 2022. Additionally, the brand takes practical steps to use green and sustainable processes and products in every location.

Prime Location

Speaking of location, The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi is an adept merger of culture,

food, and fashion. It places you directly in the heart of Istanbul’s best shopping district, combining European ambience with a cosy neighbourhood vibe. This smart slice of the area makes it easy to walk to Bosphorus and access transportation to the most famous landmarks: Dolmabahçe Palace, Taksim Square, Istiklal Avenue, Sultanahmet historical district, and Golden Horn. If your pleasure is shopping and dining, you really won’t need to go very far to explore your options.

Excellence in Dining

In fact, The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi does dining so well, that I was inclined to enjoy their Italian restaurant, Marcello, located on the top floor, twice during my stay. The authentic Italian cuisine served here by Executive Chef Luigi Mariconda is nothing short of masterful, bringing all the best regional flavours in one open kitchen concept.

Watching the pizza preparation was entrancing, and the Limoncello, a homemade bright citrus-flavoured recipe passed down from generation, was the

perfect palate cleanser. As someone who enjoys tasting a variety of things while visiting other lands, it is virtually unheard of for me to dine at the same establishment twice. However, the Focaccia tipo Recco is unlike anything you’ve tasted, especially if you’ve had focaccia before, and it will change your perception of this Italian bread.

Property Amenities and Rooms

All told, The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi features 82 rooms that create a hipster’s paradise within the city while creating the ultimate hideaway. The rooms and suites boast terraces with excellent views and feature marble bathrooms and walk-in closets. With this sweep of luxury, it still provides a cosy, inviting feeling for guests. I certainly felt comfortable during my birthday trip, and along with the excellent service, it was an all the more special occasion.

While there is much to explore in the area, a stop at the patisserie on the ground floor is a nice way to start the day with freshly baked bread and Turkish treats that will invite you in the doors by way of aroma. This location also features a spa and wellness centre, complete with a gym, indoor pool, Pilates studio, Turkish hammam, sauna, and therapy rooms.

This was the first time I had travelled abroad for my birthday in many years. It’s not usually something I do for my birthday, and, if I say so myself - I considered my birthday weekend to be a great success, which I greatly attribute to my stay at The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi and all the wonders Istanbul has to offer.

The current starting price for The Stay Boulevard Nisantasi is EUR 300 / BHD 123 per night, including breakfast. n

Building Champions On and Off the Field

Nadeen School's athletes triumph at the international level

Bringing home big victories, students of Nadeen School have been achieving significant milestones in their athletic journey. The school's meteoric rise in sports is a result of a consistent after-school programme that enables every child to explore the sport of their choice and excel in it. We spoke to Dr Paul Walton, Principal of Nadeen School, Mr Kyle Lemmon, Director of Sports, and Mr Matthew Rees, Head of PE on how the programme is fostering a vibrant sporting culture within the school community and promising a brighter future for students on the field and beyond.

Congratulations on your recent win at the BSME U11 Games! What does the achievement mean for Nadeen School on the athletic front?

This is a huge success for Nadeen school, competing in our first international sports

Feature 76 Bahrain Confidential March 2024

competition against the top British international schools from around the GCC. To finish as winners in basketball, runners up in athletics and 4th place overall in our first-ever competition is an incredible achievement, and one we look to build upon for future competitions. It shows that the school has come a long way this year, winning our first PSL (Primary Sports League) trophy for the first time in 40 years to now being successful on an international front shows the team is going from strength to strength.

We offer a comprehensive afterschool sports programme for children to play and be involved with the sports they enjoy.

It also inspires other students to get involved in athletics across the school and creates a buzz and interest due to this success. This in turn has a larger and further positive impact on our community.

Can you highlight the specific achievements of students through the school’s sports programme over the last year?

This has been our most successful sports season ever at Nadeen School.

This year our Under 11’s won the Girls Primary Sports League football (PSL) tournament, won the Boys & Girls PSL athletics meet, won the Boys & Girls PSL basketball tournament and then topped this off with the successes at the BSME U11 games, winning the Boys basketball, finishing second in the athletics and placing 4th overall. We have also seen great performances by our U14s, who have claimed 2nd and 3rd place at football and volleyball tournaments this year. We also entered the inaugural Junior Schools Football tournament for Years 3 & 4, in which we finished Cup Runners-Up & Plater winners.

Bahrain Confidential March 2024 77 Feature

What kind of sports can students participate in at Nadeen School?

There are so many opportunities for children to get involved with sports at Nadeen School. We offer a comprehensive after-school sports programme for children to play and be involved with the sports they enjoy. These include basketball, football, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, dance, athletics, table tennis and many more. Since the success of the students this year, we have seen a sharp increase in the participation level from the students across all sports and now, as a school, we have 80% of our students actively engaged in 1 Extracurricular Activity every week. All learners are choosing to and excited by the opportunities at school to try new sports, learn new skills and lead a healthier lifestyle.

We also look to develop our talented athletes by offering weekly advanced squad sessions in the sports we will compete in at tournaments throughout the year.

What academic support systems are in place for student-athletes to ensure they’re not left behind academically while pursuing sports?

All of our sports programmes take place after school to ensure there is no disruption to classroom learning. At Nadeen, we understand the importance of academic achievement and extracurricular activities, ensuring students find the right balance between the two.

Students enjoy a holistic education at Nadeen School, which we take great pride in. All aspects of education

are celebrated and also supported to ensure that everyone receives a balanced and well-rounded provision at school. Seeing how these are connected is vital as many of the skills developed in one area are essential in the others. For example, self-belief and collaboration in emotional progress play an essential role in the active and sporting development of a child. The systems across the school track and help staff, through discussions, see the holistic development of the child.

Can you tell us a little about the Advanced Sports Programmes and how they contribute to the success of student-athletes at Nadeen School?

Our Advanced Sports Programme (Sport for Excellence) is a scheme that encourages our gifted & talented students to play competitive sports regularly.

This involves weekly training sessions in several different sports and requires a commitment from the students to attend. This year we have had regular squad training sessions in football, basketball, volleyball, netball, swimming and athletics and the results have paid dividends with our recent successes in the sporting tournaments we have entered. These sessions are led by expert coaches, who share their passion and knowledge with the students. n

Making Waves

Nick Cooksey attends the 2024 E1 Series in Jeddah

February 2024 witnessed the birth of a new era in motorsport: the UIM E1 World Championship, or the E1 Series as its commonly referred. Featuring highspeed electric race boats, it kicked off its inaugural season in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last month (February 2nd and 3rd).

The E1 Series marks a significant shift in the world of powerboat racing. Unlike

its gas-guzzling counterparts, the series features the revolutionary RaceBird, a sleek, hydrofoiling vessel powered by an electric motor, making for an eco-friendly yet thrilling competition. Each boat has two pilots, which according to the rules must always consist of a man and a woman.

An interesting aspect of the E1 Series is the involvement of celebrities as team owners. Legendary figures such as tennis

champion Rafael Nadal, football icon Didier Drogba, and music superstars Marc Anthony and DJ Steve Aioki, lent their star power to the competition. I, with other members of the media, had the chance to meet with some of them to discuss their involvement and rivalry among themselves – which we learned was real, but good natured.

The inaugural race weekend was filled with great competition and unexpected

twists. Eight teams, each piloting their state-of-the-art RaceBirds, battled it out on the challenging course. Team Miami, owned by Marc Anthony and led by the dynamic duo of Anna Glennon and Erik Stark, emerged victorious on Friday’s qualifying races - only to be beaten by Team Brady, owned by American Football superstar Tom Brady and piloted by Sam Coleman and Emma Kimilainen, in the finals the next day.

Attending the event, I felt a similar atmosphere to that I experience at any F1 Grand Prix, only with less noise… and a lot more water. There’s even the equivalent of the Paddock Club, full of glamourous looking people having fun while enjoying tasty food and refreshments – but no alcohol, obviously.

Jeddah’s Corniche, with its waterfront promenade and clear waters, served as the perfect location for this event. I couldn’t help notice how much Jeddah has changed since my last visit over ten years ago – and for the better. The city that we saw was modern and pristine, and

the overall atmosphere of the place seems much more relaxed than before. The women in our group were wearing normal summer clothes and dresses and none felt uncomfortable to do so, or needed at any time to ‘cover up’.

The E1 Series serves as a platform for promoting sustainability and innovation within the marine industry. The series actively works towards protecting marine ecosystems and fostering the development of clean technologies. The RaceBird itself embodies these efforts, showcasing cutting-edge electric propulsion systems and sustainable materials.

The success of the E1 Series' debut in Jeddah likely paves the way for an exciting future. The series will continue its inaugural season, with races scheduled to take place later this year in iconic locations including Venice, Monaco, and Hong Kong. n

The next E1 GP will be in Venice on May 11-12, 2024.

The flypast wasn’t the only iconic event to mark the Bahrain Grand Prix. An airshow featuring Bahrain’s flag soared above the circuit.

It was lights out at 6:00 pm on Saturday the 2nd of March and the beginning of yet another exciting season of motor sporting thrill. Bahrain International Circuit hosted over 37,000 spectators on the final day of the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend - an event that drew crowds from all over the world.

For Bahrain, the Grand Prix weekend this year was a special one, marking its 20th year as a racing venue since its inception in 2004 which saw Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher winning the race. The circuit in Bahrain was the first of its kind in the region. This year, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen crossed the chequered flag first followed by his teammate Sergio Perez in second position and the prancing horse, driven by Carlos Sainz taking third place.

Minutes before the start of the first race of the season on 2nd March 2024, a Gulf Air Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft took flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), highlighting Gulf Air’s comprehensive strategy to reduce its carbon footprint. Behind The Grid

Aston Martin’s initiative introduced Bahraini students to the world of Formula One

10

Bahraini students had the rare opportunity to visit Bahrain International Circuit’s paddock area during the bustling Grand Prix weekend and interact with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team. The UK-based racing team hosted students from Sheikha Hessa Girls School, Hawar International School, and scouts from Hamad Town Secondary School, introducing them to Formula One and what goes on behind the scenes before setting their competitive race cars on the track.

Debbie Wall, ESG Consultant at Aston Martin, emphasized the importance of showcasing opportunities in fields such as STEM, marketing, and finance. The initiative aligns with Aston Martin's "Make a Mark" ESG strategy, focusing on environmental sustainability, social outreach, and inclusion in communities worldwide.
