Both families, however, still consider 36 Abbas Street as their rightful home.

for our guests and to go the extra mile in anticipation of guests needs. The market will always stay competitive and this is where we have the opportunity to be the bench mark of the region in delivering world-class service.

What are your plans for the upcoming Formula 1? This Formula 1 season we are excited to celebrate with another moniker event on Thursday, April 5, starting at 8 pm on Marina Beach. Like our events in the past, the Race Day Beach Bash will once again excite with pop-up stand activations from each of our award-winning restaurants, live performances, international DJs and more. It will be a party to remember in true Ritz-Carlton fashion…

Mr. Jean-Paul Dantil General Manager The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain

The promise of a great future lies within the ingenuity we feed our present.

20 Bahrain Confidential April 2018

T

What has been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? ell us something personal, what attracts you to working for luxury hotels?

I grew up in-between the UK and Switzerland, where my passion for hospitality developed and then lead me to graduate from the Centre International de Glion in Montreux. Prior to joining The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, I opened the famous Das Stue hotel in Berlin. Following this, in 2002, myself and several partners opened up a successful hotel supply and procurement business in Dubai, U.A.E. which allowed me to refine my knowledge of the region’s hospitality scene. I have always had a passion for hotels and for luxury, so this job comes very naturally.

In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? The promise of a great future lies within the ingenuity we feed our present, and it is with this that our brand service values continue to be the source for which we stay ahead of the market. Our brand pillars in fact empower our Ladies and Gentlemen to create wow experiences

We see challenges as opportunities – which is one of our continuums of success. In 2017, we saw the need to enhance our facilities and to better serve the needs of our guests and Royal Beach Club members. This in light brought the $1.5-million-dollar investment to improve our marina and bring it to European design and safety standards. We also saw the need to have heated outdoor pools during the winter months, which saw the full completion this past quarter. Although the market is tough, ensuring all our ladies and gentlemen provide exceptional service is our priority to ensure our valued guests will wish to return.

What’s next for the The RitzCarlton, Bahrain? The future is always full of thrills here at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain – in short, our chefs are working steadily on Ramadan preparations, along with engineering who will help to unveil our signature Ramadan tent design. We will also celebrate a kick off to summer with a fiesta at our halo restaurant Cantina Kahlo. And we are also excited about the brand rollout of the new “Moments” program where Ritz-Carlton reward members can book an insider guide package with us to experience all of Bahrain. n

On the other hand we will be keeping our regular themed nights, as we expect to close with high occupancy just like in the previous years.

Mr. Pasquale Baiguera General Manager Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain

We remain at the forefront by ensuring that we deliver consistent quality and high level of service throughout all the organisation

ell us something personal, what puts a smile in your face at work?

The first thing that makes me smile is when I drive into the main entrance of the hotel and see the green bushes and garden. Once I enter the hotel, I pass through all the outlets and make sure everything is as they should. When I see happy hotel guests smiling, I smile deeply as well, and also when I see my colleagues and employees at work smiling, I become happy and smile back at them.

In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? We remain at the forefront by ensuring that we deliver consistent quality and high level of service throughout all the organisation, as well as by continuing to come up with innovative ideas and activities and ensuring that we go above and beyond guests’ expectations. Also, we will undergo a major renovation with such a beautiful new look. The aim is to be ready in one year with a new hotel and products so that we could continue to

What has been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? To compete in a very challenging market with many new beautiful properties that just opened in the Kingdom yet keeping ourselves focused on the right things, we manage to maintain our position as a leading hotel in the market and with competitive set results.

What’s next for the Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain? I am proud to announce and confirm that thanks to all our stakeholders’ commitment, we will proceed with a full hotel renovation (rooms and F&B outlets, starting sometime in May). We are planning to completely renovate the hotel, rooms, F&B outlets, public areas and last but not least all infrastructures. This means we will have a brand new product with state-of-the-art facilities. n

Mr. Sarosh Aibara Chief Operating Officer Elite Hospitality Group

Elite is blessed with a team of affable and dynamic individuals who are always ready to face any industry challenge, with goals to achieve as we all work in the same direction towards more success.

We offer guests complete at home like hospitality experiences when they are staying with us. We are the sole hospitality providers of allsuite accommodations in Bahrain. What’s next for the Elite Hospitality Group? with friendly, discreet and efficient service from our team of professionals. And all this allied to two excellent restaurants (the Levantine Reem Al Bawadi and international fare from Patio) and a fullyequipped spa and outdoor pool. But at the top of all - is our focus on providing consistently excellent service.

What are your plans for the upcoming Formula 1? The Formula 1 brings the eyes of the world onto the Kingdom and is a chance for us all in the tourist business to work closely with the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition team in supporting them to promote Bahrain to people all over the globe. The real challenge to us all though is to build on this event and not to rely on it. We need to work with Tourism authorities to create even more reasons to come to enjoy what Bahrain has to offer.

Mr. Desmond Acheson General Manager Ramada Manama City Centre

The challenge for us is knowing how to attract potential clients to choose your property over that of anyone else.

26 Bahrain Confidential April 2018

T

ell us something personal, what attracts you to working for luxury hotels?

From a totally personal angle, the attraction of the hotel business was originally that it allows you to travel all over the world as part of your day-to-day work. Also, that it allows you to see and be immersed in cultures and environments that you would never have the chance to experience otherwise. The excitement of this is multifaceted in that you meet so many people from hugely different backgrounds; you get to experience their lifestyle; to taste their food; to perhaps learn some of their language; understand their humour.

In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? At the Ramada Manama City Centre, we are very fortunate that our owner, Dr. Adel Bukhowa, has invested in quality. This allows us to present our 140 key hotel to our guests as a truly excellent 4-star product, where they can expect consistently excellent rooms combined

What has been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? The biggest challenge for us at the Ramada Manama City Centre in 2017 has been to get our name on the map. There are hundreds of excellent hotels in the Kingdom, all of which offer something special in their own big or small way. The challenge for us is knowing how to attract potential clients to choose your property over that of anyone else. And beyond that challenge, is the one of how to attract those customers on an ongoing basis – not just for a one-off special event. That brings me back to the point I made earlier – where I believe that the provision of reliable, consistent and excellent service will, in the long run, be one of the primary reasons that persuade customers to keep coming back week after week, month after month, and year after year

What’s next for Ramada City Centre? Our immediate focus now is on the upcoming Holy month of Ramadan during which time we aim to provide some excellent and exciting offerings at Reem al Bawadi. n

What advice do you have for people who are about to venture into this field today?

Dr. Essa Faqeeh Chief Executive Officer Al Areen Investment Co.

Upgrading the quality in Tourism and Hospitality sector in Bahrain to a remarkable level is my first priority.

hat’s next for Al Areen Palace & Spa?

Al Areen Palace and Spa is a unique luxurious place where we focus on the guests to experience the blend of relaxation and pleasure. It features 78 luxuriously appointed pool villas that impressively showcase mesmerizing Arabian charm and offers the travel connoisseur complete privacy in an alluring, peaceful haven that is rich in both spirituality and culture. 'Live Your Life' is one of the world's most extensive and awarded wellness centers in the Middle East spread over 10,000 square meter featuring single and couple treatment rooms, hydrothermal garden, vitality pool, ice igloo, foot spa and garden Hammam. Our focus is not only entertaining the guests but also caring for their healthy living and wellbeing.

What are your plans for the upcoming Formula 1? We have created special deal and packages to attract regional and international F1 guests with many added

Opportunities are big in this sector. Bahrainisation is at 21%, which means there is a 79% opportunity for job seekers. Tourism and Hospitality are a growing sector especially in Bahrain and opportunities are widely open for those with vision, enthusiasm and those who are ready to learn and accept changes. With good interest in the sector coupled with educational knowledge leading to experience will definitely find the right opportunity and future. We always encourage Bahrainis to take interest in what they do and with a clear development plan they can easily reach to their goal.

Tell us something personal, what have you always enjoyed about the hospitality industry? I am thoroughly enjoying being committed to tourism and hospitality sector. Hospitality and tourism management is all about what we do every day, the passion about energy, excitement, updates and upgrades, changes, and satisfaction. I indeed enjoy myself and the happiness of others. Upgrading the quality in Tourism and Hospitality sector in Bahrain to a remarkable level is my first priority. My team and I are really working on to make it happen and we are already implementing at present. In conclusion, the hotel industry is a pretty interesting and pleasant domain to get involved in. As any other job, it has its ups and downs, and that’s the greatest part of it: there is always a place for innovation and there will always be innovators. n

Bahrain Hospitality

and request things for their stay ahead of the check-in time. It is also multilingual allowing guests to chat in their own language and receive a response from our team accordingly.

What are your plans for the upcoming Formula 1? No doubt that Four Seasons is the place to be for the F1 Weekend here in Bahrain. Our iconic Azure F1 Party will be spiced up with an internationally known French trio Paris House Addict. Our very own Celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck will be back with his phenomenal BBQ on our outdoor lawn with a live band. So we will have something happening every single night to set the stage for the big race.

What has been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year?

Mr. Richard Raab General Manager Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay

We have just recently introduced our Four Seasons Chat feature so guests can chat with staff members 24/7.

30 Bahrain Confidential April 2018

T

ell us something personal, what attracts you to working for luxury hotels?

I noticed at an early age that I like to work with people and the hotel business is undeniably a people business. I truly enjoy creating individual experiences for our guests that create memories for a lifetime. This by allowing our staff's craftsmanship and character shine through in all what they do. Likewise, on the employee side, to be able to coach, mentor and help someone achieve their career goals is also very rewarding.

In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? We need to ensure that our service delivery continues to improve and becomes better day by day. We can never take the finger off the pulse on the service delivery, this is our trademark. The development of technology also greatly affects the guest experience. We have just recently introduced our Four Seasons Chat feature so guests can chat with staff members 24/7. They can use it even before arrival

We had a very successful year in 2017 and are looking forward to building on that in 2018 with continued success. A lot of people see the new hotels entering the market as a challenge, but I see it positively. Everyone in Bahrain that is involved in tourism need to work together to promote Bahrain as a destination. I personally believe that if we have more internationally well known players going out with a message that promotes Bahrain, well this will definitely put the island on the global map. So rather than fighting for a small 'pie' we need to work together and combine our efforts to make the 'pie' larger for the benefit of all. n

What are your plans for the Formula 1? The Ramee Grand Hotel is already set with the Formula 1. Our team has already anticipated such a huge event and prepared incredible deals to ensure that the fun of F1 extends outside the racetrack. Additionally, the hotel’s outlets have prepared an attractive menu as well as a variety of exciting events to support the Formula 1 visitors.

What has been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year?

Mr. Kumar Ashwani Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa Resident Manager

T

ell us something personal, what puts a smile in your face at work?

Seeing happy guests puts a smile on my face. When the guests are happy, it’s because my staff are serving them with their heart! Furthermore, when my team comes up with an innovative idea to organize an event, and it's really working and you can feel the energy of the event it puts a smile on my face.

I believe that Ramee Grand Hotel should focus on quality management to attract new customers.

32 Bahrain Confidential April 2018

In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? Beyond the concept of customer service one has to include additional factors such as employee satisfaction, involvement and flexibility is a key factor in quality management as well as being a critical success factor for Ramee. New innovative ideas like promoting destination weddings or sports events in Bahrain will create a niche for Ramee Grand.

I believe that the biggest challenge that hotels are facing is the incompatibility in supply and demand – just recently, it has been announced that more than 50 four and five-star hotels plan to open in Bahrain by the end of this year. However, we always view challenges as a way to become better and successful in whatever we do. One of the largest success for the Ramee Grand Hotel last year was to be a proud hospitality partner of several major events including the Royal Jazz Festival, which is Bahrain’s first international jazz festival.

What’s next for the Ramee Grand Hotel? My eyes are on my current operations here in Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa - SEEF. We are working to be the preferred partner for both corporate and leisure clientele. We also endeavor to be a key player to neighboring regions like KSA. At the same time we are also preparing offers and promotions for the Holy Month of Ramadan and Summer. n

weekend leisure travelers from the Gulf, driven mostly by KSA travelers and has loyal repeater guests built up during the last 4 years.

What are your plans for the upcoming Formula 1? For Formula 1 2018, the Domain already have two bigger groups contracted, and the rest of the hotel will be booked up with the additional pressure on the city forecasted as previous years.

What has been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? The biggest challenge is the huge increase of supply, with no additional demand. This will create pressure on rates which again put profitability under pressure. Shortsight this is good for the travelers, but is not sustainable in order to keep up quality focus as a five-star product long sighted.

Working for and with, luxury hotels means you will have to be top focused on improving and developing Team members to understand luxury travelers’ requirements and demands. That reflects training Team members to excellence in service and product delivery, always striving to exceed guests’ expectations. That constant focus and that constant passion for service and product excellence is what I am attracted to!

In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? Bahrain is a highly competitive market for the Hospitality sector and it seems to continue far into 2018. As a local Brand, it is even tougher. The Domain joined Preferred Hotel Group’s global alliance of over 800 hotels worldwide, and through that alliance we get access to global accounts we earlier could not access, that will support us to fill mid-week business. In addition, The Domain stands firm with the

The Domain successes are the two Signature and award winning restaurants Imari and Le Sauvage, where both had good growth year on year. A lot of focus on development of creative new F&B products and contents, in addition to an uncompromising focus on quality, have put these two restaurants literally sky high, in the Restaurant and fine dining Heaven for food lovers that exist in Bahrain.

What’s next for The Domain? Domain is constantly developing and launching new products and concepts. Last year the Domain launched “Concerts at the Domain” (Music and fine dining) “Classics at the Domain” (classic movies and butler service on top of the hotel) “Romance at the Domain” (Couple's Indulgence Experience that includes Spa, in room butler service, romantic set up and candlelight dinner with stunning views overlooking the city) and “Masters Wine Dinners” a fine dining extravaganza. This year we are finalizing the touches on a new outlet, that will put The Domain as the hotspot for adults in the city, and we are also taking The Domain into the market! We will keep you posted! n

T

ell us something personal, what attracts you to working for luxury hotels?

My interest to work in the hospitality industry started from when I was a teenager as I saw it as an opportunity to fulfill my dream of travelling around the world. It became a passion during my first job in a luxurious hotel after my hotel management studies. Then, I moved on and seized the opportunities for new challenges in Guam, Macau, Seoul, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi before arriving to Bahrain three years ago.

In a fiercely competitive market, how do you plan on remaining at the forefront of the hospitality game? The core of the Hospitality industry is to provide a unique experience to guests filled with everlasting emotions. With this in mind, we make sure at Downtown Rotana that all our guests experience treasured memories which will last for a long time. The feedback we receive each day from our guests is overwhelming. We may not have the biggest or most ostentatious establishment in Bahrain but

A great success was the opening of Alto Lounge on the 25th floor. A very unique venue with an outdoor terrace overlooking the best views of the city.

What’s next for Downtown Rotana? We are celebrating our second year anniversary and for this special occasion, we have created many exciting promotions. A series of great offers lined up during the month of March and April to honor 2 years of excellency. To thank our guests for their loyalty, we are also introducing a grand raffle draw with many amazing prizes such as flights to Dubai, stays in UAE and Bahrain Rotana hotels, dinners, brunches and many more exciting prizes. We always try to offer new things to improve our guest’s satisfaction. We recently opened a Cigar Lounge in Teatro Downtown restaurant located on the 4th floor which is also celebrating its second year anniversary in April. The restaurant offers an East-Meets-West concept cuisine within the embrace of warm design motifs and ultra-chic interiors.n

AMH –

From Strength to Strength An interview with Dr. George Cherian, CEO of American Mission Hospital (AMH)

B

ahrain Confidential recently met with Dr. George Cherian, CEO of American Mission Hospital (AMH), to discuss the modern challenges faced by medical facilities, and the opening of AMH’s latest medical and dental clinic in Riffa.

Is it fair to say that no other medical centre in Bahrain has a history and culture as American

38 Bahrain Confidential April 2018

Mission Hospital? AMH certainly has a unique legacy as the first healthcare provider not only in Bahrain but in the entire GCC. AMH was established by Samuel Zwemer to provide health care to all sectors in the society. The rulers of the other GCC countries came to AMH to receive their health care in the early 1900s.

When I took over AMH in 2007, AMH had already established deep roots in Bahrain.

What’s the biggest challenge currently facing AMH? AMH has always changed and adapted to the needs of the fast changing world. However, the major factor that disrupts our preparations today are the runaway costs of providing healthcare.

Feature Why are costs running away? One reason is that people are living longer and need greater medical attention at the end of their lives. Intensive care is expensive and often, near the end of someone’s life, is essentially futile care. Another reason is the advancements in medical technology that come at an ever greater cost. A third reason is there’s now more regulations and bureaucratic controls

must be approved regardless that they have already gone through - and passed - safety and other hurdles in Europe and the US. I understand that all these regulations were introduced with the best of intentions, but they can be difficult and expensive to comply with.

You mentioned the registering of foreign doctors Bahrain, like all the other GCC countries, heavily rely on imported manpower to run its healthcare system. Until recently, physicians who were licenced to practice in Europe and North America, for example, could easily practice in GCC. Now they need to have a new licence that’s issued in the GCC. This was introduced 5-6 years ago.

What other challenges does AMH face?

All these new regulations are increasingly complex and laborious to comply with, and they effect prices paid by the end user.

in Bahrain. These include registering doctors from overseas and regulating pharmaceuticals. All these new regulations are increasingly complex and laborious to comply with, and they effect prices paid by the end user. This wasn’t a concern even a few years ago when there were less healthcare providers in the Kingdom. It was, until recently, much easier to import medicines in Bahrain and in other parts of GCC. Being a responsible institution, AMH was able to import medicines from Europe and USA even as late as 2012. Now we have a far more complicated and expensive process. Today a government body controls the import, distribution and pricing of medicines in Bahrain. All imported drugs

The challenge faced by all healthcare providers is how to tackle increasingly prevalent lifestyle diseases including Diabetes, hypertension, strokes, heart diseases, and cancer. These lifestyle diseases spread as a combination of an unhealthy lifestyle and are particularly common in this region. Prevention is better than cure, as the saying goes, but unfortunately the wellness or prevention concept isn’t culturally entrained amongst much of the local population – and it seems to be getting worse.

Is there a remedy for this situation? People being people, this is a tricky situation to tackle. The next big step in healthcare is value based health care, which means providing incentives for people to maintain a healthier lifestyle. In value based healthcare, if a patient,

Feature after receiving proper care, needs to return for further treatment due to no other reason than they allowed the condition to return because they live an unhealthy lifestyle and didn’t take sensible and reasonable steps to maintain their own health, then they should be charged. Unless people feel a pinch on their pockets, many just don’t take their healthcare seriously.

It’s standard that doctors recommend treatments based not on what’s needed for the patient, but on what will bring most income to themselves and

their hospital, but AMH doesn’t permit this practice? Absolutely not. Our doctors are not incentivised in any way to recommend anything other than what the patient actually needs. For example, when appropriate and whenever possible we prefer to always monitor patients before we accept them for treatment. We have secure and quarantined private rooms, where families can join, for this purpose. This makes no sense from a ‘business perspective’ as we often send people home after a few hours

without their needing a hospital stay. But it’s the right thing to do for the patient. At AMH we do not recommend certain drugs nor hospitalization unless, or until, it is absolutely necessary.

Congratulations on your newly opened AMH clinic at Riffa. What makes it different? The newly opened medical and dental clinic in Riffa will be connected with our other three clinics in Manama, Saar and Amwaj, through satellite facilities to ensure prompt and adequate medical attention.

NHRA (National Healthcare Regulatory Authority) has introduced an accreditation standard to regulate every healthcare provider. After a detailed inspection, they award accreditations ranked by four levels. These are Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond, with Diamond being the highest standard. I’m proud to say that AMH has been accredited with the diamond standard. Our newly opened Medical & Dental Clinic at Riffa will be inspected in the next six months. n

The wellness and restorative healthcare centre has niche dieticians and exercise trainers to tackle obesity, diabetes and pre-diabetes. The clinic houses the largest hydrotherapy pool in the kingdom, along with unique rehabilitation and physiotherapy facilities. Water aerobics will be a unique facility offered at AMH Riffa. The sports clinic will be one of the major specialities at the hospital. Dr Paolo Villigio, the personal physician of Lewis Hamilton of Formula One's Mercedes team will run the department.

On a grand scale, Formula 1 unfolds like an epic tale – its setting, a mysterious land for those who are in transit.

The 2004 Grand Prix of Bahrain marked the first ever round of the FIA Formula One World Championship to be held in the Middle East. It is also the official culmination of a multi-million-dollar project started back in September 2002 when the Kingdom of Bahrain signed a long-term deal to host the event. Located at Sakhir, 30 km south-west of the island's capital, Manama, the Hermann Tilke designed circuit contains no less than five track layouts

within one complex. Its construction began in November 2002 and in the months prior to its March 2004 completion, work was going on around the clock. Over 12,000 tonnes of stone were used in the build, a third of it Welsh granite, chosen for the track surface due to its excellent adhesive qualities. The original 5.412 km Grand Prix circuit was designed with the spectator in mind, with 50,000 grandstand seats, all providing excellent views. The Exotic Glow Body Scrub is an exotic exfoliation ritual used to invigorate and revitalize the body after which a massage is meant to soothe and relax. We were led through this spa treatment by the lovely Miao.

However, many studies have shown that a regular treat—as in a spa treatment or a massage can help relax, rejuvenate and refresh the body and spirit. Bahrain Confidential went on a spa retreat at Taqah Spa, Ramada Manama City Centre and experienced “bliss” in 45 minutes. Taqah Spa, located on the 9th Floor of Ramada Manama City Centre offers a complete menu of massages, skin treatments and exotic remedies—from hydrating facials and body wraps to a romantic couples massage. The highly trained spa technicians attend to the specific needs and concerns of all the guests.

After the sauna, an aromatic scrub was rubbed on our bodies and Miao gently worked on exfoliating our dry and tired skins. Next up was a relaxing massage complete with soft and soothing music. Miao used an exotic island flower body lotion—a signature at Taqah Spa. She paused for a moment before applying it and we could sense that she uttered a prayer of wellness for us. Moments lapsed in the pure bliss of relaxation. After the massage, we took a few moments to enjoy some green tea and take in the wonderful ocean view. It has been a truly relaxing and enjoyable experience and we will regularly be visiting Maio and Taqah Spa for all our relaxation needs. n

The treatment ultimately ended with a relaxing massage in a cloud of foam; this session felt like flying in the clouds and exceed our expectations about Turkish Baths. Overall, the Turkish Bath Ceremony experience was simply amazing and entirely unique. We were left glowing and rejuvenated – Rimal Spa is definitely one for the books!

Signature Jewels of the Sea Massage Turkish Bath Ceremony The tradition of the Turkish bath (or hammam) started centuries ago during the Ottoman Empire and is an important part of the Turkish culture even today. This traditional process includes a soft steam and traditional Kassa glove scrub with black olive to remove the dead skin cells. The spa uses Charme D’orient products in this ritual. After a short period of cleansing and relaxing in the steam room, we lied down on a warm tiled slab. The temperature was not as abrasive as most traditional hammams, it was just enough to open the pores and sweat the impurities. What followed was a good hour of pampering –

Rimal Spa’s Signature Lava Shell massage is deeply comforting and relaxing, using naturally smooth polished shells of the South Pacific. The heat from the shells gently eases away the muscle tension, improving circulation and a sense of balance to the entire body and mind. Lying on my back, anointed with fragrantly scented rose oil, I wasn’t sure what to expect. My therapist Jane, used both her hands and the shells to work through the muscles. The heat allows the therapist to perform a deeper massage and effectively penetrate layers of tension. After the massage, my skin felt soft and I had a warm glow for the rest of the evening. I left the spa refreshed and stress free – truly, Rimal Spa has the ultimate treatment for the mind, body and soul. n

Back on the Move Osteopathy: An integrated revolution Services We Offer

F

or the longest time, healthcare was limited to a visit to the GP and complains were often solved with prescriptions or ‘over the counter’ drugs. The medical world has been changing – increased awareness about the over use of medication has created an environment where health issues are being scrutinised and other avenues are being explored. And that means an opening up of consciousness to a wider range of health care practices including an adoption of different modalities that were once thought of as ‘alternative’ but believed as complimentary or allied. Beyond Bahrain, the advantages of socalled ‘alternative’ health care practices have long been discussed and absorbed into the mainstream, but this has only been a recent move within the Kingdom. Thanks in no small part to Bahrain’s National Health Regulatory Authority, complementary health care has been endorsed and promoted over recent years, to the significant benefit of our country’s people, who now enjoy choice. Lana Peters, the founder of ‘Back on the Move Osteopathy’ is proud of just how far Bahrain has come in embracing different

modalities of healthcare in just a few short years. “I have always been a firm believer in the benefits of complementary therapy”, she explains. “As an Osteopath practicing for more years than I care to admit, I have seen the positive benefits that not just my profession brings, but also that of many other therapies. It is enlightening that we are witnessing a revolution in Bahrain – one that embraces healthcare diversity and allows an ever greater range of practice.” “We established our clinic with solid support from the NHRA some years ago and I’m proud that we now treat mostly Bahraini nationals who have embraced the concept of a drug-free preventative care, manual medicine which focuses on total body health by treating and strengthening the muscular-skeletal framework”. With a professional staff of more than ten, Back on the Move’s holistic approach to healthcare offers osteopathy treatment together with chiropractic, therapeutic massage, pregnancy, fertility and menstrual massage, lymphatic drainage, cranial sacral therapy, fitness and postural correction coaching to provide an integrated solution for people with sports injuries, arthritis and mobility issues and more.

Rehab, fitness and posture correction coaching 9. Sports massage “We work in a totally integrated way”, Lana explains. “Rather than being isolated in our own modalities, we refer and consult with hospitals and GPs to provide an integrated healthcare solution for our clients, in order to create the best possible outcomes for all”. It doesn’t stop there. Not content with the massive strides achieved over the past few years, Lana Peters has created a new outlet for healthcare: Working in partnership with Eyad Fareed principal of ‘Physio Relief’, a new practice has gained NHRA approval. Revolution starts with just one or two like-minded people, but to become accepted it has to attract the mind-set of the masses. Integrated healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain has achieved just that and more. As testimony to the foresight of Bahrain’s health authorities and the community, the revolution is over and integrated healthcare is now considered mainstream.

Health & Wellness

Ask HV Holistic Health… I have a stressful job and I’m always tired. I want to start exercising because I’ve been told it will help improve my energy levels. I was considering trying a new hobby or sport, what do you recommend?

Jemma Answers: Firstly, I’m glad you’re deciding to make a positive change. Exercise can help improve energy levels, if performed at the right intensity.

Stress and exercise intensity Stress from work is mental, whereas exercise is a physical stressor on the body. It’s important to workout at an intensity that makes you feel better, not worse. When you exercise at the right intensity it releases endorphins, helps relieve stress, and improves your mood. However, if you are stressed from work, high intensity exercise will not only increase your lactic acid, cortisol (stress hormone) levels but, it will also increase your risk of injury. Consider that sometimes, less is more.

Selecting a new hobby or sport Decide if you want to participate in a team or if you prefer to workout alone. Team sports can be a good stress reliever, can distract a busy mind and they are a great way to make new friends. Try a football, rowing or running club, for example.

58 Bahrain Confidential April 2018

However, if you like down time and need to relax, simply walking or swimming can be a great form of active meditation. Why not try exercising outside in the fresh air while the weather is good, before it gets too hot! Consider what motivates you. Are you competitive, or driven by goals? If not, a half-hour morning run at sunrise might be more appealing to you than competing in an Iron Man. Choose a sport you enjoy and that doesn’t seem like a chore. For example, if you don’t enjoy running and have knee problems, an activity that has less impact on the joints such as cycling will be a better option.

Exercise and energy levels Exercise at a time when you have the most energy. If you’re a morning person, train first thing. If you are energetic in the evenings, training later can help you unwind and fall asleep more easily after a stressful day. Allocate one hour of your day on days that you have most free time. This will help you

reduce the chance of you skipping exercise because you get distracted with other things.

Recommendations for sports (one size does not fit all) Activities such as horse riding can be very therapeutic, and a great leg workout, boxing or tennis can also be great stress relievers and fun. From contact sports, such as rugby, to non-contact sports such as rowing, team or single sports, competitive or non-competitive, there is something for everyone at all ability levels. Just be mindful to take things at your own pace and select the right exercise and intensity that makes you feel good. n Send your questions to info@hvholistichealth.com or @hvholistic Jemma Lilburn Health & Wellness Practitioner HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training Tel: +973 1777 5544

Art

Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahraini artist and ‘artoholic’, Hussain Ali Alnoaimi.

The Good Life

Artoholic W

hat do you remember as your first work of art?

My first work of art is where it all began. My father had built this new wall in our home and practically that was my very first blank canvas. Even though that wall has been painted over now, the memories still remain in numerous family photographs.

68 Bahrain Confidential April 2018

What does art mean to you?

I perceive art as meditation, it’s the time that I go to another world, and where everything is full of colors and my path is like a blank canvas. And I am addicted to that serenity, that moment; hence why I proudly call myself as an ARTOHOLIC. I love experimenting and keeping my mind open to new artistic surprises and that’s what gives my work an intriguing

Art

Artist Bio Hussain Ali Alnoaimi, a former hospitality professional, gave up his full time job back in 2009 to pursue his love of art. Hussain will be showcasing his pieces in his exhibit ‘ZUHUR AL BARAÂ (Innocence and Flowers)’ at the Bahrain Financial Harbour Gate until the 28th of April.

authority. I love being on the edge, sometimes I fall and other times new, unexpected possibilities of expression and technique become available to me.

Can you describe your artistic process? I visualize each painting before I begin and imagine the media I will use for that piece as well as the techniques that will be used throughout. Once I have that vision set, that’s when I actually begin. While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project my methodology is consistent. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects they are linked by recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter. The roughness of paper collage together with acrylics and spray paint establishes a dream-like surreal quality.

What themes are you exploring and what does your art say to the world? Through my masterpieces, I aim to spread peace and harmony to the world. These artworks provide an avenue for me to inspire a positive outlook to others. I tackle a lot of themes throughout my work process but some of the themes that I am currently exploring are beauty, peace and culture.

I encapsulate ‘beauty’ through the portraits that I make – whether these are fashion-centred or featuring common people. In a time where negativity surrounds us, I endeavor to promote ‘peace’ through my happier artworks like the butterfly and flower-themed pieces. I believe

Through my masterpieces, I aim to spread peace and harmony to the world. these artworks provide a much-needed break from the rather chaotic world. Last but definitely not the least, the cultural theme of my artworks will always be prominent as I love to work on my Arabic culture – from pieces on Arabic doors, windows or even veiled women.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? My work with mixed media focusses on famous figures and some striking images that motivate me. My inspiration comes from various international artists as well as local unrecognized young local artists. I give creative processes the opportunity to carry me forward.

Largely self-taught, Hussain discovered his passion for colors at a very young age. Painting on white walls at his home were his first blank canvas. His first works were mainly acrylics on canvas, however, he always reinvented himself by trying new things. By his late twenties, his art evolved to incorporate experimental mixed media. He creates imagery and artscapes from images and cutouts found in magazines, newspapers and old books. Quirky, vivid and thought- provoking, his art is categorized by stunning colors laced with tenacious message. Hussain, usually uses 3 or 4 techniques in one art piece, which is what makes his work stand out from the rest. n T: - +973 3323 0028 E: hussainalnoaimi@ gmail.com /thegoodlifeartoholic @alnoaimihussain

People & Culture mum made me wear horse blankets,” she said, frowning. I, in turn, shared my plight of having had to, more often than not, wear a size bigger, thanks to my mum’s committed dislike towards ‘fitting’ clothes. Even when it came to grooming, we were encouraged to go au naturel. While our mums meant well, I remember feeling like the odd one out when my friends showed up with well-shaped eyebrows and legs as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Putting a #OOTD (as it’s now referred to) together was a task for me while the other girls and boys seemed to do it effortlessly. Over time, I developed a poor self-image despite being an emotionally well-balanced person. This continued well into early adulthood. Sketch Credit: @noorsketches

O

ver the past year, a schoolmate from Bahrain and I have rekindled our friendship and bonded over coffee, books, and lipsticks. During one of our conversations, we happened to discuss our cringe-worthy dress sense or lack thereof, as teenagers. “My

Melissa Nazareth, Born in Bahrain, Melissa Nazareth lived on the island for three decades before moving to Bombay. Though miles away, she finds ways to connect to her first home. @melnazareth @melissanazareth

Around the same time last year, I read about a beauty parlour in Bombay that caters to children – boys and girls. According to the tabloid, many parents host their kids’ birthday parties here as a one-off treat or bring their cubs here once in a while to relax and rejuvenate with manicures, pedicures, massages, hair styling and more, all using zero-chemical, herbal and natural products. The very next day, after the article was published, the said tabloid carried a string of letters to the editor stating why it’s wrong to allow children to root their self-esteem in grooming and styling treatments. I for one think this was a one-track mind reaction. After all, inculcating the importance of being well-groomed and presentable doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive to raising emotionally well-balanced humans. In fact, grooming, like basic hygiene, is an important part of personality development. If my memory serves me right, there is a parlour in the same vein tucked away on the topmost floor of Ramli Mall in Bahrain. The idea is for mums and their little girls to enjoy some grooming time together.

Who is to say that style isn’t a great platform for selfexpression? Tom Ford said, ‘Dressing well is a form of good manners.’ Children are constantly, consciously or sub-consciously, exploring their individuality and looking for ways to express themselves. Who is to say that style isn’t a great platform for self-expression? Why must it not be encouraged? I’m not saying that children must be dragged to a parlour or be taught A for Alexander McQueen, B for Bottega Veneta… but it’s important to stop labeling grooming and styling as corrupters of children’s minds. Instead, these are lessons that must be introduced to young people in regulated doses. It took my friend and me 30 years to form our personal opinions on beauty and style, and every day we continue to unlearn and relearn. It’s hard work, looking fresh and fabulous. But hey, somebody’s got to do it! n

Feature

Is eating too quickly bad for your health?

Quick D

Bites

o you savour mealtimes or do you wolf your food down? Eating at your desk or on the run can mean you can gulp down your breakfast or lunch in less than five minutes. And this means you are more likely to get obese or develop metabolic syndrome, both of which increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke, says research presented at last week’sAmerican Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2017.

According to Dr. Luisa Dillner on an article published in The Guardian, the link between eating quickly and becoming unhealthy has been known for a while. When you eat quickly, the body doesn’t get a chance to signal to the brain that you are getting full. Receptors in the stomach that respond to being stretched by food, and the hormones that signal to the brain that partially digested food has made it to the small intestine, can take 15 to 20 minutes to kick in.

The researchers from Hiroshima University in Japan followed up 642 men and 441 women over five years, identifying them as either slow, normal or fast eaters. They found that fast eaters were 11.6% more likely to have developed metabolic syndrome – defined as having any of three risk factors out of obesity (around the waistline), high blood pressure, high levels of bad fats (triglycerides) and high blood sugar after a period of fasting.

Chewing more helps to digest your food – your saliva has enzymes that both lubricate and start digesting what you eat – and allows your taste buds to “notice” the meal. To eat more slowly, talk between mouthfuls (not during them), reduce your pace to match the slowest eater at the table and don’t wait to be starving before you get food. You can also sip water. n
